Introduction
Welcome to Your December Issue. A very warm welcome to this, our last edition of 2017. December is a time for both reflection on what’s gone and anticipation for what’s round the corner of the new year. We can think about what we’ve achieved; those places we’ve visited and new people who may have come into our lives; others who we’ll see no more, but whose memory will remain strong. I prefer to look forward, though, and those new year resolutions are already in the planning stage! In the meantime, on behalf of all of the team here, my sincere thanks go out to everyone who has helped us in any way this year, especially our advertisers and contributors, with their regular features, wonderful advice and suggestions. All the very best to you all for Christmas and for 2018 – good luck, but most importantly, good health!
Claire x
Another Christmas fast approaching and the big switch-on of Bourne’s Christmas lights on December 2nd nearly here. Bourne’s Magical Christmas Fayre promises to be bigger and better than ever and we hope that you will be able to enter the £100 Novelty Hunt Competition, and enter into the true Christmas spirit. Our team of contributors continue to ensure that your favourite magazine is full of interesting features, advice and information to make your lead-up to Christmas as enjoyable as possible. And, as 2017 disappears over the horizon, I’ll share one of my favourite one-liners of this year, this from the Irish comedian, Jimeoin: “I’m rubbish with names. It’s not my fault, it’s a condition. There’s a name for it...” Enjoy the read, and all the very best for 2018.

Bourne’s Magical Christmas Fayre What has become in recent years a firmly established pre-Christmas extravaganza will be held on Saturday December 2nd, as the centre of town plays host to Bourne’s Magical Christmas Fayre. Once again, the Bourne Events Team are both excited and proud to be able to create such a wonderful opportunity for families, budding musicians and dancers, stall holders and established shopkeepers, to all come together on this very special day and, with the Christmas lights switch-on, herald the beginning of the festive season. The Bourne Events Team “So who puts all of this in place?” you might wonder. Well, it’s the same energetic group of people who saw Bourne’s Classic Car Show threatened with closure a few years ago and refused to let the town suffer with its demise. The fabulous success of the past two “Classic Car and Bike Carnivals” is testament to the Bourne Events Team’s determination and organisational expertise. The Events Team comprises seven volunteers who give their time without question, to ensure that their town has large-scale events, of which all of its residents can feel proud. Take a well-deserved round of applause: Joanne Dolby, Paul and Judi Fellows, Graham Halbert, Paul Hind, Peter Ledger, Claire Saberton and Andy Willis! Fabulous Attractions Town centre streets will become pedestrianised, and both Abbey Road and North Street will have
Christmas Fayre
Food Stalls and Fairground Rides, along with a Giant Scalextric Track, whilst the collection of Craft and Charity Stalls along West Street will also serve to attract the milling crowds. Once again, the huge stage in the Market Place will be a focal point, with dancing and musical performances to impress one and all. Wake House, on North Street, will be where Santa and his industrious little elves will be based, so make sure that a visit to Santa’s Grotto is high on your “must do” list! This year, the elves have provided all sorts of crafting activities whilst you’re in Wake House, Ho, Ho, Hoping that you’ll all enjoy yourselves while you’re there! There will be stalls here too. The Town Hall will be open from 11.30am for live music, mulled wine and mince pies. With local artists proudly displaying a range of their work, and, to add even more of the Christmas flavour, don’t forget to call in at the nearby Methodist Church, where their annual collection of superbly decorated Christmas trees will be on display. The Party Princess will make an appearance throughout the day, whilst at 4.30pm, the Christmas lights will be switched on, followed by music on the stage until 6pm. The Bourne Events Team wish to thank everyone who has helped them, in whatever way, to make this fabulous day possible, and hope that you all enjoy yourselves and have a truly magical time.

Making memories with Burrilliant Creations Losing someone you love is one of the hardest experiences, but there is a way of keeping them close after they’ve passed on. Following the tragic passing of Dr Raj Patel, a highly esteemed figure in the Bourne community, his wife Ranna has found a ‘Burrilliant’ way of keeping his memory alive. Kathryn Burr, founder of ‘Burrilliant Creations’, creates Memory Cushions. Made from a special piece of a loved one’s clothing to commemorate them, these are a wonderful alternative to giving or hiding away a favourite item that they used to wear. Ranna shares her thoughts on this special enterprise: “My anguish at losing Raj was immense, but when I heard about the Memory Cushion commissions Kathryn receives through her sewing business, this led to an amazing way to keep my memories of Raj near. Raj always wore beautiful silk ties and, as each one holds a special memory, I couldn’t bear to part with them, so I requested my Memory Cushions to be made from these. Kathryn was the only one with the compassion and talent to help me commemorate Raj in such a perfect manner.” Discussing her commission from Ranna, Kathryn Burr explains: “Dr Raj Patel was a fantastic doctor and family friend, having worked at the Bourne Galletly Practice with my Dad, (retired G.P. Dr Colin Burr), for many years. As Ranna remains dear to us, it was wonderful that she requested me to make something so special for her in memory of Raj. We collated the ties into complementary colour sets, and created decorative designs in a variety of styles. It was such 8

a pleasure to make these for Ranna, and a wonderful way to pay homage to a fantastic doctor and family friend who passed away too soon. The joy these cushions have given Ranna is what makes this request so special.” Ranna concludes: “These cushions have helped me take a huge step forward in managing my grief, and enabled me to embrace the wonderful memories of my dearest husband. These are wonderful reminders of the happy times in our lives, and will help me cherish the many joyful occasions Raj wore those beautiful silk ties. “These Memory Cushions have given me and my family beautiful heirlooms which will keep his memory alive for generations to come.” If you may be interested in commemorating a loved one with a Memory Cushion, contact Kathryn Burr via: www.burrilliant.strikingly.com
Burrilliant Creations produces bespoke hand-made products and gifts; from Memory Cushions and also toys to home furnishings, fabric goods and tailored clothing. With a degree in BA Art & Design, Burrilliant recognises the importance of producing beautiful and quality products, which are decorative, yet functional.

Hand Craft Barns
- For that Special Christmas Gift It is two months since Chris Delderfield had a derelict barn in her Hanthorpe garden converted into Hand Craft Barns. Chris now runs a superbly different little shop, offering a wide range of costume jewellery (all handmade by Chris herself ), as well as cards, luxury soaps and shower gels, chocolates, jams and chutneys, ornaments and more. She has been adding to her product line all the time, sourcing handmade items that are just that bit different, and many of them bearing the “Fair trade” cachet. Now with Christmas only a few twinkles away, her merchandise has more of a festive feel than ever, with handmade biscuit flavours such as Mince Pie Shorties, Christmas Pudding Shorties and Orange and Lemon St.Clements. She has also made them into a variety of attractive gift packs, for that special Christmas gift. The costume jewellery that Chris offers can be made to match any outfit, whether for your Christmas parties or for any other special occasion. If you’re looking for a bespoke item, then just pop in and discuss your ideas with Chris herself. She is also very keen for the public to make the most of the wonderful stock that she has been gathering since her opening, so why not use the last weekend before Christmas for those last minute purchases? (Better still, get there before then, while stocks last!) Chris is planning to hold various craft classes in the new year, depending on demand. If you’d like to learn how to make individual pieces of jewellery or have a go at a range of different personalised gifts, then please get in touch. The Barn Shop will be open at weekends from 10am – 4pm or by appointment at any other time. She will be pleased to welcome you, so why not pop in to see what is on offer?

The West Street Centre – The Pop-ups Hit Bourne!
November 1st 2017 saw a new phenomenon, when Emanay Peters, owner of the popular Petorama Petfoods Ltd on West Street, opened up a section of her building to the first “pop-ups” on the streets of Bourne. Realising that her huge premises were more than adequate for her thriving business, and with the desire to provide the people of her town with a wider range of shopping options, Emanay has established ten small, but perfectly formed, retail spaces, from which the following entrepreneurs can trade.
Just walk through, past the bulging shelves of pet food supplies and accessories, and soon you will be in “browsing heaven”, as each one of these pop-ups presents you with a fascinating array of interesting and very appealing items. Bourne Sports Cabin Local man, Tim Lister, brings his love of running and cycling to the community in the form of this retail outlet. A range of sporting shirts, shorts and gloves are on offer, alongside cycling accessories such as inner tubes, lights, locks, helmets and lubricants. Books, drinks bottles and mugs add to the variety.
12
D I S C O V E R I N G
Paws for Thought It’s no wonder that in a place so “pet-centric” as this, there should be someone providing something geared to all pet lovers, and this is just what Jane Lees has managed to achieve. She has a range of greetings cards, fridge magnets, tins and trinket boxes, all with pet lovers in mind. There is an impressive display of cat and dog ornaments, some of which are rare and very collectable, and there will be regular up-dating of the stock.

Dapper Doorsteps If you’re looking for something rather unusual, something which will do its job effectively and something which is bound to become a talking point amongst your guests, then look no further than Reg and Sheila’s “Dapper Doorstops”. Hand crafted and coming in a range of bright and cheerful colours, these creations appear in the solid form of cats, ponies, dogs and cockerels. forgetting, of course, the stocks of bait necessary to encourage the little blighters to find their way into those same keep nets!
The Crochet Café Welcome to the home of originally crafted crochet. Elizabeth Watkins has compiled an array of colourful and charming toys, teddies, owls and ponies – all designed and crafted by hand. Show the special one in your life just how much you care by choosing something really original and well-produced like these items on display.
Perfectly Framed and Foiled
Bits and Pieces If, like me, you love to rummage through stacks of old merchandise in search of that something really special, then Lana’s collection of pre-loved items is for you. Here are stained glass pieces, pots and plates, amongst a range of picture frames and ornaments. There is also a miscellany of new knickknacks. Good luck hunting! F.C.S. Fishing Supplies The angling fraternity of Bourne and the surrounding area will no longer feel the need to have to travel miles for their accessories or fishing bait. This well-stocked display covers a wide range of fishing rods and reels, alongside miscellaneous tackle, bags, fishing stools and keep nets, not d e c em b er 2017
Jody Sayer has taken an original and unusual idea and brought it to the buying public, with her personalised frames and prints. Some contain mottos and life-affirming sentiments, whilst others aim to bring a smile to the customer’s face – an ideal stopping-off point when looking for that unusual stocking filler for Christmas. Yvonne’s Country Corner In what is still essentially a rural area, there will always be a place for merchandise which has that “country life” link, and that is just what Yvonne has tapped into here with her beautiful display. Quality handmade items such as cushions and napkins, sit next to table mats and tote bags, and all with that wonderful bucolic feel, as images of pheasants are very much in evidence.

1. Please be aware of traffic when visiting Santa and approach the sleigh from the kerb side only, your families’ safety is all of our priority. 2. Santa will cover all areas of Bourne but cannot visit all roads. 3. It is also physically impossible for Santa to stop outside all houses; he has a large area to cover and limited time to achieve this each night, between 6 and 9pm only. Your consideration to this is immensely appreciated, thank you.

Mayor
Words from the Mayor Councillor Paul Fellows
One question I’m asked quite frequently is, ‘Are you enjoying being Mayor?’ and, specifically, I was asked by my granddaughter, ‘Why do you always talk to people?’ a question which had more to do with my personality rather than any job description! My answer to the first question is always, “Yes, what’s not to enjoy?” In the last few weeks, Judi and I were honoured to open Bourne Abbey School’s amazing firework display. Huge thanks and congratulations to all involved. Even the little boy, with the frozen eyelids, who asked about the display: ‘Is it starting yet?’ was well impressed when it did start. That particular day ended with us watching LDC performing ‘Lost in Wonderland’ at the Corn Exchange. This brilliant hip hop show underlines the fantastically talented young people we have in Bourne. Well done Lauren Willis and all who took part. We were present when a very special trophy, made from a steering wheel used by Graham Hill, was presented to Bourne Civic Society. As well as this, we have been fortunate to represent Bourne at Stamford’s Civic Dinner, and the opening of Market Deeping’s Garden of Remembrance. Remembrance Sunday always makes me feel both humble and proud by degrees. Marking the sacrifices made by every one of our families in some form or other is humbling, in the way Remembrance Sunday really does touch us all. The response we all make as a community,
just by being there, makes me proud of our town and proud to be Mayor. The answer to my granddaughter’s question is, ‘I just like talking to people, but being Mayor gives me an official excuse’. As Mayor, it’s heart-warming when people go out of their way to smile and say hello. The boy with the frozen eyelids at the firework display actually thought I could make the display happen more quickly and was suitably impressed when they started only five minutes later, even though that wasn’t down to my intervention. As we approach this time of celebration, let’s all use the season as an official excuse to go out of our way to smile and say hello to each other. Christmas still holds the magic for me that it did when I was small, and I know the same is true for many people. Judi and I wish you and your families a very Happy Christmas with hope for a great New Year.

Gobbled It All Up?

t’s the time of year for eating extra chocolates and mince pies, and drinking more alcohol, so it’s no surprise that we often stagger into the new year with a tighter waist band. The average person can consume 6000-7000 calories on Christmas Day alone! That doesn’t include the parties leading up to Christmas or Boxing Day or New Year…it is just on Christmas Day!!! Just think …7000 calories is about 1kg of weight! Whilst we often think that we will “work it off” in January, burning off the extra Christmas calories is an Olympic task and would take more than 2,000 laps of the velodrome! In fact, it would take Victoria Pendleton 2,177 laps at the Olympic Velodrome to shift all 7000 calories. Meanwhile, cycling hero Sir Bradley Wiggins would have to ride 41 miles, the distance from London to Southend, to burn off the 1,500 calories found in an average Christmas dinner alone.
BREAKDOWN OF 6,000 CHRISTMAS CALORIES Breakfast Smoked salmon and cream cheese bagel – 210 calories Starter Prawn cocktail – 200 calories Main Christmas dinner – 1,500 calories Seconds – 500 calories
Dessert Christmas pudding – 335 calories Yule log – 250 calories Nibbles 5 Sausage rolls – 250 calories A slice of brie – 200 calories 50g helping of Quality Street – 240 calories 5 pigs in blankets – 400 calories 5 cocktail sausages – 150 calories Chocolate orange – 230 calories Crisps - 150 calories Drinks 1 bottle Champagne – 600 2 bottles of beer – 300 Large glass of red wine – 500 But don’t despair! The problem is not what you do between Christmas and the New Year, it’s what you do between New Year and Christmas that counts! The secret is to get back into your healthy eating and exercise regime straight away. Enjoy your day, but don’t be fooled into eating up the left overs and massaging bad habits until the middle of January! You can get ahead of the game by starting your thirty minute exercise programme now, so you are well prepared for the new year. Our realistic dietary advice and thirty minute workouts are designed to fit into your busy lifestyle for maximum results in minimum time. Call us on 01778 423923 for a free trial.

Health
Relax, Refresh and Recharge this Christmas Christmas is meant to be a time of togetherness, with family, fun, joy and selfless thought towards others. However, Christmas can sometimes just seem like one of life’s major stresses. What makes Christmas stressful? First, there’s the preparation, the shopping in frenzied, crowded stores, people pushing and shoving and you worrying whether so and so will like the present you’ve bought them. Then there’s the cooking and organizing and, of course, the financial strain that the extra cost of Christmas entails. Pressure can come from other angles too, such as trying to stick to that healthy eating regime, social anxiety, or keeping phobias, depression or even anger at bay at Christmas. Alcohol isn’t helpful either, destroying the happy chemical in our brain, leaving us more susceptible to stress, anxiety, anger and depression. Survive the festive season using relaxing hypnosis What is stress? Stress is a feeling we get when we feel under too much pressure, whether that comes from outside sources or from ourselves. A small amount of stress can actually be useful, as it prompts us into action. When it builds up, however, it can lead to physical and psychological problems, including anxiety, high blood pressure, insomnia, headaches and even depression. We can become stressed by anything that seems to exceed our ability to cope, and causes stress hormone levels to rise in our bloodstream. Hypnotherapy for stress Hypnotherapy will relax you deeply and prepare your mind to feel calm about the prospect of Christmas. You’ll find yourself feeling
more relaxed during the holiday season and actually enjoying Christmas. The body’s stress response, (commonly known as the ‘fight or flight response’), triggers a set of symptoms within the body, including a rapid heartbeat, an adrenaline rush and shallow breathing. To counteract this, hypnotherapy aims to trigger the body’s relaxation response, which tells the body that it’s OK to relax, before altering thought patterns surrounding stressful situations. “Solution Focused Clinical Hypnotherapy” is a fantastic way to help to empty ourselves of stress and to be more at peace with the world around us. Hypnotherapy is well known in successfully helping people to stop smoking in one simple session, but it can also be used to help in other, tremendously positive ways, from losing weight, depression, phobias, OCD, IBS, PTSD, childbirth/ children, addictions, hypertension, needle phobia, improving confidence and sleep through to easing stress/anxiety to promote relaxation and much more. Transform a stressful Christmas into a relaxed one

The Best Destinations to Take Pre-school Clare Lockett Children, Outside of School Holidays Travel Counsellor If you have a baby or toddler not yet of school age, then taking them on a break during May, June and September will ensure competitive holiday prices and a reduction in the number of tourists once you get there. Short flights and plenty of interesting sights to explore, yet stay safe, are at the top of the list when it comes to child-friendly getaways, so take a look at our favourite fly-and-flop destinations, which I’m sure your babies and tots will adore.
Port de Sóller, Majorca, Spain This traditional Majorcan village situated on the west coast, next to an arrestingly beautiful horseshoe harbour, provides pampered luxury for both yourself and your children. This sophisticated holiday destination is lined by an inviting sandy beach for children to play, while the pedestrianised promenade offers a child-friendly environment in which to escape the intensity of the midday sun while enjoying an array of cafes, restaurants and shops. Isola d’Elba, Tuscany, Italy Tuscany’s Elban beaches provide travellers with every imaginable beach type, with your atypical golden sanded coastlines interspersed with rocky shores and well-equipped resorts. These sands are more inviting than ever during the off-peak months, when the holiday crowds have long since dispersed, and you are free to explore the immaculate wonder of the Tuscan coasts. Cable car rides, informal restaurants, and a range of family accommodation options make this a great choice for an out-of-season beach escape with the little ones. Zakynthos, Greece A stay at Gerakas beach is a guaranteed trip of a lifetime with small children in tow. Local inhabitants and tourists alike flock to the sloping shores of the beach in the late afternoon to enjoy one of the finest stretches of sand

on the island. Moreover, the beach is highly accessible by ramp with a buggy, and hatching turtles can sometimes be seen in early September, scurrying to the safety of the water. Discerning local accommodation choices for visiting the beach include Diana Palace Hotel just twenty minutes’ drive away, where a kids’ pool is part of a host of family-friendly amenities. Patara, Turkey When taking children closer to school age on holiday, Patara represents a more adventurous, yet hugely rewarding, option for more seasoned young fliers. Gently layered white sand can be found within the country’s largest beach on this south-west stretch, with children particularly enjoying the warm shallow waters and the banks of sand dunes creating endless fun and timeless memories. Away from the beach, bustling local markets and secluded mountain villages provide a distinctly cultural aspect to your trip. Ile de Ré, France Creating a myriad of fond memories, a trip to France’s Ile de Ré includes beaches with pools at low tide for children to play in and surf-friendly waves for keen surfer parents. Local markets are available to stock up on snacks for a beach picnic and any required baby changing items, while balmy evenings can be spent strolling along the coastline and enjoying a local ice cream, and perhaps something a little stronger for mum and dad.

Legal Corner
Who to Trust A
number of clients in recent weeks have sought our advice on ‘Probate Trusts’ or ‘Protection Trusts’, presumably as someone has attempted to sell these products to them.
We are seeing a growing trend whereby a salesperson will offer a free initial legal consultation, often even in your own home. This special offer will be available for a short period and will sound too good to be missed. We would not necessarily say that this is a scam, but our clients are right to be wary. If you do decide to take up the offer, then we would strongly suggest that a solicitor, regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority, reviews the paperwork before you commit yourself. Trusts, when properly used, can be beneficial in certain circumstances, but advice should first be sought from a specialist. The terms ‘Probate Trusts’ and ‘Protection Trusts’ are artificial creations with promises to protect against care home fees or probate costs. Normally, it involves creating a trust and transferring your main home into the names of the trustees, who then hold the property on behalf of the beneficiaries of the trust. Some of the fees we have seen quoted by the salesperson run into thousands of pounds!
In reality, ‘Probate Trusts’ can be of little or no benefit. A Grant of Probate (or likewise) is more than often required in any event following death, regardless of whether the main home still belongs to the deceased or has been placed in a trust, and the cost of obtaining probate is not as expensive as you may think. For ‘Protection Trusts’ used to allegedly reduce care home fees, if this involves placing your main home into trust and you continue to reside in the home, the full value of the home can still be taken into account when the local authority make any care funding assessment. This is because the local authority may succeed in claiming that you deliberately deprived yourself of the asset to avoid or reduce the cost of funding for your own care. If the above sounds familiar, or if you just wish to discuss your options with a fully regulated local solicitor with years of experience, then please contact Double & Megson, Solicitors, on 01778 341494, or e-mail enquiries@doubleandmegson. co.uk .

Gardening
The Potting Shed Not much to do this month in the allotment, especially if you have “put it to bed” for the winter months. Now is a good time to clean tools, seed trays, pots and other equipment, as it will help prevent any diseases carrying over to infect next year’s seedlings. Also, why not give the shed a good tidy out and clean? Some jobs that you can do are:● If you intend to grow peas or beans next year, dig in plenty of organic matter as they require nutrient rich soil. ● Lift the last of your carrots, turnips and beetroot, and put a mulch of straw around parsnips to prevent them being frozen in to the ground. ● Continue topping up compost and leaf mould bins. ● With vegetable beds empty, it is now a good time to put well-rotted manure on the soil. ● As long as the soil is not frozen you can continue winter digging. ● Earth up Brussels sprouts stems to keep them secure from strong winds and remove any brown or yellow leaves.
SALES | REPAIRS | SERVICE | PARTS | HIRE
● Make sure your winter brassicas are netted to prevent pigeons eating them. ● Sow some broad beans in a sheltered spot; as they are early, they should be free from the dreaded blackfly. ● Keep picking leeks and parsnips but if the weather is very wet, check that the leeks are not getting waterlogged and rotting. ● Bare-rooted fruit trees can still be planted if the soil is suitable – not frozen or water logged. When you have gathered the fruits of your labour, and usually there is far more than you can possibly eat, storing them carefully will mean that you will have home-grown veg for a few more weeks. Make sure that vegetables are stored in a cool dry and, if possible, dark, frost-free place away from vermin. To store carrots and parsnips, spread a layer of sand in the bottom of a wooden box, lay the roots on top (make sure they are not touching) and then cover them with another layer of sand. The sand should not be dry but just moist enough to stop the vegetables from drying out. Well that’s about it for this year. I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas and a happy new year!

Your Finances
Funding a Decent Retirement Income by Paul Ross, Financial Planner at Landmark IFA Ltd
W
henever you start thinking about retirement planning, it is worth beginning by working out how much income you are likely to need. Few people need as much income in retirement as they did when they were working; the mortgage might be paid off, children are likely to have left home, and your general expenses may have fallen. Nevertheless, the anticipation of increased leisure time might spur you to make ambitious plans for travel or family; these expectations have to be considered if you are to set realistic targets. Once you have calculated how much money you will need in retirement, you can then work out where it will come from. For example, the flat-rate, single-tier state pension is £159.55 per week (for 2017/18); you may have money coming in from Individual Savings Accounts (ISAs); rental income from a second property, or even paid employment. Having made your plans, you should have a clearer idea of the income you will need to generate from your pension savings. You might already have started to save through a workplace or personal pension scheme. It is likely you will need to continue to build them over your remaining working years. Just to give you an idea, a pension fund valued at £100,000 will buy a 65-year-old an annual income of less than £5,200, with no built-in guarantees. If you wish to retire earlier than that, the cost will be even higher. The amount you need to save could, therefore, be considerable. You can invest up to 100% of your annual earnings in your pension savings, subject to a maximum of £40,000 (for 2017/18) and tax relief is available on the contributions. There is also a maximum limit on the overall size of the pension portfolio you can generate. Nevertheless, your savings don’t all have to be locked away in a pension plan. If you prefer some flexibility over your access to your savings, Individual Savings Accounts (ISAs) can be a useful addition to your plans (subject to your personal tax position) and you
can save up to £20,000 into an ISA during the current tax year (2017/18) Investing in stocks and shares The entire Individual Savings Account (ISA) allowance of £20,000 for the tax year 2017/18 can be invested in cash, stocks and shares, or a combination of the two. Investors can choose from a vast array of investment options ranging across global equity and bond markets. Many investors choose to put their ISA allowance into something more diversified, such as a portfolio of collective investment funds, which reduces risk by accessing a selection of shares within a single investment wrapper. You may prioritise income, or focus on capital growth. Over the long term, portfolios with relatively high equity content have tended to offer better returns than those in cash, bonds or commercial property. However, the value of equities can fall as well as rise, and they can be volatile. Ultimately, your ISA choices should not only reflect your goals, but also sit comfortably within your wider portfolio. If you want to ensure you have covered all the options available, you should seek professional advice. Please remember past performance is not a reliable indicator of future results.

Personally, I don’t think there is a lot of value in many of these comparisons, as there are many factors that can affect the results, but as a tool for exercising your PC as a basic system test, benchmarking programs are useful. Go to https://novabench.com/ download to download the program.
Wait for the file to fully download and then open it and click on the INSTALL button to install the software onto your PC. The Novabench software will now install. Don’t panic if you don’t see
When open, the easiest way to use the benchmark is to simply click on Start Tests. This will run through a suite of system tests that will exercise your system and calculate a performance benchmark number. Before doing this though, I would suggest closing all open programs and to leave Novabench as the only program running. During the testing, Novabench will show you the name of the test being processed.

When complete, Novabench will provide a benchmark score. You can register with them to check your score against other systems online.
The last section of tests will exercise your graphics card (video). Performance will vary in this section, depending on how

Christmas Time Could Be Selling Your House Time! by Richard Marfe, Sales Negotiator, Newton Fallowell
T
he countdown to Christmas is upon us, the season of goodwill and joy to everyone! With all the hustle and bustle, shops being rammed to the rafters, as everyone rushes out to buy last-minute gifts for loved ones at home. It is true that the housing market can slow down in December, as our focus goes elsewhere. But, with us all spending more time in our homes, it really gives us time to not only appreciate what we do have but potentially what we can move on to. January is historically a very busy time for us estate agents and a great time to put your property on the market and get moved, with the “New Year, new me mentality. But, be aware that many other homeowners have that very same idea and lots of competition could
see you not get the attention you deserve. So our advice would be to get ahead of the market, contact us today and get sold BEFORE the competition. We will be the agent to make your Christmas and New Year special with our exceptional customer service and high-quality marketing materials putting you ahead of the pack. We are also supporting the Bourne Christmas Market this year on Saturday December 2nd. So come on down and see your local award-winning estate agents. We will be on hand to give advice on all things property and dish out some mince pies. Everyone at Newton Fallowell would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

“ ‘Tis the season to be jolly” – presents to buy and proudly display under a beautifully decorated tree. However, it may not just be the intended receiver of the gift who takes a shine to the pile of expensive goodies. Christmas is a time when many of us let our guard down, among the excitement leading up to the big day. For opportunist thieves, visible presents under 16:45 the tree, open car boots full of shopping while loads are being taken into the house, and even the possibility of an unlocked garage, are rich pickings which can turn your Christmas from being “Merry” into “Miserable”! Equally, flaws in home security while out and about visiting friends and family are a beacon to thieves – so always remember to check your alarm and never leave doors, windows or garages unlocked. Some tips for a safe and happy festive season: Don’t leave presents in full view – either in the home or on the back seat of the car. Shorter days mean longer time for thieves to be in operation – always lock your car and front door when entering your home.

Make sure your Christmas stays Merry – not Miserable!
Keep a light on indoors and outdoors, if you are out visiting friends or family. It may be an idea to fit some motion detector security lighting – it won’t just be carol singers who come calling. Keep your personal data safe – and securely dispose of receipts. If buying bikes and/or electronic equipment for Christmas, mark them with your postcode.

Away over Christmas? Then plan ahead - be sure to cancel any newspaper or milk subscriptions. Arrange for a neighbour to park on the driveway to help create the impression someone is home. Do not leave descriptive telephone answering machine messages like “we’re away skiing for the Christmas holidays”, nor post your plans on social media. If using outdoor festive lighting, ensure cables aren’t passed through windows, leaving enough gap for burglars to make use of. For any home security improvements, we have locksmiths, alarm and CCTV installers, electricians and many other traders who can help. Pets and Vets
Keep Your Pets Safe over Christmas by Zoe Reeve from Alder Vets
A
s Christmas is upon us again, it’s good to be reminded of the potential hazards for your pets at this time of year.
to cause kidney failure and usually will result in the death of the cat, so please clear up any spillages immediately.
Onions, fruit cakes, mince pies, blue cheese and chocolate are all toxic to your dogs, and be careful with those turkey bones too! Bones can cause choking, constipation, blockages and can damage your dog’s guts. Grapes and their dried products (currants, sultanas and raisins) are toxic to dogs. Ingestion of even a small quantity can cause severe kidney failure.
Alcohol can have a similar effect in dogs, just as it does in their owners when drunk in excess. They can become wobbly and drowsy and, in severe cases, there is a risk of low body temperature, low blood sugar and coma. Dogs may help themselves to any unattended alcohol left lying around over Christmas, so ensure it’s always out of their reach.
Pine needles off Christmas trees can get stuck in your pet’s fur and in the pads of their feet, causing pain and irritation; hoovering up frequently will reduce this risk. The decorations on the tree can get eaten and cause blockages in the stomach or intestines, sometimes resulting in a Christmas Day visit to the vets! Some decorations will smash or splinter and this can cut the inside of the mouth or injure the gastrointestinal tract. Chewing through those Christmas lights can also give them a big shock!
Holly, mistletoe, and poinsettia plants are poisonous to dogs or cats, so if you normally use these plants to decorate your home, they should be kept in an area that your pet cannot reach. Holly, when ingested, can cause pets to suffer nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. Mistletoe can cause gastrointestinal upset and cardiovascular problems, whilst many varieties of lilies can cause kidney failure in cats, if ingested.
Ethylene glycol (anti-freeze) poisoning is very common at this time of year, and we frequently have cases of this in cats. The anti-freeze is very sweet tasting and cats love this taste; sadly, it only takes a very small amount
Please keep all of these toxins out of the way of your pets, so that you can all enjoy the festive season in the best of health.
Merry Christmas from us all at Alders!

Emanay – One Year On and Moving Forwards It has been a very busy twelve months since Emanay Peters took the ambitious step of becoming the owner of Bourne’s only specialist pet shop, the large and very well-stocked Petorama Petshop Ltd, on West Street. Now, with the opening of her exciting new venture, The West Street Centre (featured elsewhere in this issue), it’s time to reflect on the past year, but also to look forward with confidence. Having qualified as a dog groomer and establishing her “Hair of the Dog” business on these premises, the opportunity arose for Emanay to fulfil her ambition to actually own and run the whole operation. This was a year ago and she continues to receive superb support and encouragement from her staff, namely Karen Foston, Angela Reet and Shirley Wright. Furthermore, self-employed dog-groomer, Sian Rogers, has successfully established “The Dog House”, (a cutting and styling parlour on the Petorama site), where she provides her grooming service, involving clipping, bathing, ear care, handstripping and nail clipping*. Emanay is delighted to have achieved so much in her first year at the helm. Her stock levels are as high as they’ve ever been and her recent large investment in improved signage throughout has indicated a clear level of optimism for the future. She talks fondly of the help she is receiving from all quarters, especially from her loyal customers and also from other local businesses, who, I’m sure, join us all in wishing Emanay and her team all the very best in the future, and particularly with regard to The West Street Centre. 60

Woven Chords Christmas Concert Stamford’s Community Choir, Woven Chords, with members from Bourne to Boston, will be performing their mesmerising annual Christmas Concert at Stamford Arts Centre on Friday December 8th, starting at 8pm. Enjoy a vibrant mix of new songs and new arrangements together with traditional Christmas favourites. This will be their first public performance since their exciting new choir director, Emmanuel Omuederiaye, took over this year. Woven Chords is a mixed choir and is run on the principle that everyone can sing, and that nobody should be excluded from music. This means that there are no auditions, the choir is open to anyone who loves singing, and you don’t have to be able to read music, as all songs are taught by ear. Many of the people who join the
choir have never sung outside their bathroom, but they also have more experienced singers who have sung in other choirs. They are a natural voice choir and believe that if you can speak, then you can sing! They are, at the moment open to new members. Why not check out the website www.wovenchords.com? For more information, contact hilary@wovenchords.com Concert tickets are available from Stamford Arts Centre Box Office @ £8 (£7). www.stamfordartscentre.com or phone 01780 763203.

Discovering . . . Victorian Christmas magic
Rex Needle
M
agic and make believe were part of the Christmas season of entertainment in past times, conjured up by Alfred Stubley, a painter, decorator and paper hanger, with artistic talents who spent his life bringing pleasure to the people of Bourne where the festive season had a special meaning and provided an annual challenge to his talent for fantasy, creativity and ingenuity. Few theatrical presentations in the area were complete without his vision as a scenic artist and his colourful and spectacular Christmas productions were among his best. One of his most notable successes was in 1887 when he designed the sets for a grand fancy fair with entertaining interludes rather similar to our modern pantomimes, which was staged at the Corn Exchange shortly after Boxing Day to raise funds for the Congregational Church in Eastgate [now the United Reformed Church]. The theme was a street of nations or a grand international bazaar and we have a glimpse of the set from this colourful description published by a local newspaper: “The scene was laid in Canton. The peculiar conglomeration of Oriental and European architecture was depicted with realistic effect. Proceeding down the left side of the street, the enterprising traveller passed in succession a Persian residence, an Indian cottage, a Chinese house, a delightful Japanese village, a Tyrolese chalet, a snug mountain home covered with snow and

having icicles pendent from the roof, a magnificent Buddhist temple having its elaborate exterior embellished with representatives of the Oriental deity and dragons, and the last abode in the curious street was an Australian log hut.” There were many other examples of his art and Alfred’s imagination was particularly valued by local musical and drama groups such as the Bourne Amateur Operatic Society which presented annual performances at the Corn Exchange in the early years of the 20th century with his stage sets. Born in the town in 1859, Alfred Stubley attended the Council School [now the Abbey CE Primary Academy] before learning his trade as a painter and decorator and soon established his business at 28 West Street where he lived with his family, working from the workshops and warehouses at the rear, now all demolished. He died in London on Thursday 27th October 1932, aged 73, and was buried in the town cemetery when hundreds turned out to pay tribute to the man who had given so much time to provide pleasure for so many. COMMUNITY SPEED WATCH by Sergeant 600 Rachel Blackwell
A
t almost every Neighbourhood Panel Meeting, our team is asked about what can be done about speeding in our towns and villages. Many residents express an interest in taking an active part against drivers who excessively speed, putting them and their families at risk where they live. Whilst Community Speed Watch has always been in place in Lincolnshire, the scheme was never fully adopted to the degree that communities in our neighbouring counties use it. However, the enhanced scheme was officially unveiled at a Road Safety Summit in Grantham on November 3rd. With backing from the Lincolnshire Police and Crimes Commissioner, Marc Jones, Lincolnshire residents will now be supported in establishing their own groups to combat speeders. Speed Watch, which started in 2014, currently operates in 170 of the 507 parishes across the county, and largely involves placing portable speed notification signs in speeding hot spots.
How will it operate? Now, local residents will be given guidance about buying the proper equipment to operate, and will be offered appropriate training in the use of radar guns to check the speed of passing motorists. The new scheme is designed not to issue penalties to drivers, but is successful in causing drivers to think about and moderate their speed. Drivers caught speeding by the volunteers will be sent a warning letter and road safety advice under the new enhanced Community Speed Watch Scheme. Repeat offenders will be visited by local Neighbourhood Policing Teams. How can I get involved? Information about the scheme and how to register (by any interested group or community), can be found on the Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership website. Alternatively, you can e-mail them for joining instructions on staying.alive@lincolnshire.gov.uk. They can also be contacted on 01522 805800.

“Bourne Worth It” Women’s Institute
A
lmost a year now since its inception, secretary of Bourne’s newest W.I, Jacky Summers, explains here what goes on and welcomes new members.
The W.I. logo is about Inspiring Women. Three friends thought Bourne had room for a second W.I. Lincolnshire South Federation was very encouraging and so, before our feet had touched the ground, we were holding our first meeting in January this year. The W.I. has been going for 102 years and new W.I.s are opening all over the country, with the resurgence in hobbies like craft and baking, as well as women seeking the opportunity for “me” time in good company. We call ourselves “Bourne Worth It W.I.” This name works on several levels and it links us to the history of Bourne, where Charles Frederick Worth, pioneer in women’s fashion, was born in 1825. We are keen to respond to ideas from our members. So perhaps not everyone wanted to go wall-climbing but those who did had a great time. “Crafty” people have made great glass items, painted pots, and some have learned how to knit and crochet. Bookworms have got together to form a monthly book club. We had a guided walk around Bourne Woods with a Forestry Commission guide and now plans are afoot for a walking group. Sometimes we meet up
for a drink. We are having a Social Saturday soon, to learn beading and willow-weaving. Monthly meetings pass in a flash, so there is a regular newsletter to make sure everyone knows what is going on. Our first speaker was David Palmer, with his tales of his life as an auctioneer. We have heard how John Lewis came to be the store that some of us rather like; we have tried our hand at Laughter Yoga and learned about Face Blindness. We are trying to provide variety in meetings and managed to include games, a quiz and an egg and spoon race. In September, a fashion show raised money for the charity, the Associated Country Women of the World (ACWW). This is the only charity that the W.I. supports, and we are so impressed with their work. A lot of ladies who have joined are surprised to find what a wideranging organisation W.I. is and how there is more on offer than just the monthly meetings. We can participate in events in the county, nationally, or accept invitations from other local W.I.s. We meet in the Darby and Joan Hall in South Street at 7.30pm on the second Thursday of the month, and welcome visitors and new members. If you are old enough to vote, then you are old enough to join W.I. (Ladies - Who could resist joining a group whose publicity includes such classic lines as “plans are afoot for a walking group”? - Ed.)

Motoring
Top Tips from Go, Go, Go
P
atrick Hunt is Managing Director of Go Go Go Intensive and a member of The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM). Go Go Go Intensive is the only Intensive Driving School in the UK to be affiliated to the IAM, the UK’s leading road safety charity.
As most of us share Christmas with our families, it is inevitable that some of us will be driving over the festive period. Here are my top ten Christmas tips for motorists who are driving over the holiday period: The weather is unpredictable around wintertime. Always keep a two second distance from the vehicle in front and multiply it by two in the wet and by ten in ice or snow. In icy conditions, always use a higher gear, as this provides less power to the wheels and reduces the risk of wheel spin. There is always a higher police presence over Christmas. Make sure that your driving standard is maintained to the highest level. Watch out for pedestrians revelling in the festive spirit, as they could be more unpredictable. Keep an eye on your speed and adjust it according to the environment.
Despite a greater police presence on the roads, drink-driving rates inevitably increase around Christmas time. If the car in front is weaving or making sudden irrational movements and the driver displays inconsistent speed control, give them plenty of room. They could be intoxicated… One of the foremost dangers of driving over Christmas can be black ice. Adjust your speed to the conditions and steer gently with no sharp acceleration or braking. Whilst grit salt can help thaw out frozen water on the road, it can present a problem in itself. The salt crystals mean less of the tyre touches the ground, reducing grip – so bear this in mind when driving through these areas. Opportunist thieves are aware that cars could be laden with expensive items around this time of year, so make sure that they are locked away in the boot, (the expensive items, that is, but then again …!). Car parks are especially busy over Christmas. Take a good look around your vehicle before you get into it and move off, as well as making constant observations when manoeuvring – it could help avoid a costly low speed bump or prevent you injuring a pedestrian. …and finally, having reached your destination safely … Wrap empty boxes for presents and if/when your child misbehaves or doesn’t listen, throw one of the “presents” on to the fire - at least you’ll see the funny side of it.
Merry Christmas everybody!! The most affordable, safe and express learning system to pass your driving test in the UK Tel: 01733 314151 | Email: enquiries@gogogointensive.com
