Introduction
Welcome to Your February Issue. Well, 2018 is well and truly with us, as we’re already focusing on Valentine’s Day in this bulging edition of your “favourite freeby”! It’s really heartening to hear that there are lots of you who are finding, month on month, the magazine getting more interesting, with an even wider range of features and articles covered. Thank you for this endorsement of our team’s dedication, and long may it continue! Our contributors have brought together a whole host of golden, not daffodils, but ideas instead, to make this year’s Valentine’s Day your best ever. Please note, we cannot be held responsible for anything untoward resulting from our feature on the top ten aphrodisiac foods on page 14!

So, farewell “Dry January”, and that alcohol detox wasn’t too bad after all, was it? I hear some people managed it by just sticking to London Dry gin, but it must have been a struggle! This month, we’re expecting the worst of the winter weather, if the “old wives tales” and the Met. Office are to be believed, so make sure you’re well wrapped up and everything is in place for a fabulous Valentine’s Day. Spring will soon be here! And, as Britain’s next great hope on the tennis court, Kyle Edmund, battles his way up the rankings in the Australian Open, I’m reminded of an old saying, which all Valentine’s Day fans will endorse, “Love means nothing in tennis, but it’s everything in life”. Enjoy the read!

Valentine's Day - February 14th - What’s that all about then? Take a brief romantic stroll through the centuries, up to today’s commercial orgy of flowers, jewellery and chocolates. In Ancient Rome, February 13th, 14th and 15th were celebrated as “Lupercalia”, a pagan fertility festival, seen as a basis for a celebration of love on this date. AD 289 - A Christian, Valentine of Rome, is martyred under Emperor Claudius. While in jail, this priest is said to have converted his jailer by healing his blind daughter’s sight. He is later said to have fallen in love with the daughter, sending her a note saying “From your Valentine”, but this is apocryphal.
1797 – “The Young Man’s Valentine Writer” is published, suggesting appropriate rhymes and messages, and, as postal services became more affordable, the anonymous St Valentine’s Day card became possible. By the early 19th century, they become so popular that factories start to mass-produce them.
AD 496 - Pope Gelasius declared February 14th to be “St Valentine’s Day”, a Christian feast day to match the still-popular pagan festival of Lupercalia.
Mid-1980s - The commercialisation continues: noting the sales effect on chocolate, flowers and cards, the diamond industry gets involved, promoting St Valentine’s Day as a time for giving jewellery and so the “tradition” takes off.
Mid-18th century - The passing of love-notes becomes popular in England, a precursor to the St Valentine’s Day card as we know it today. Early ones are made of lace and paper.
AD 2018 - An estimated 1 billion St Valentine’s Day cards will be sent worldwide this year, making it the second most card-heavy celebration, after Christmas.

Made with Love
Home is where the heart is, and this decorative fabric hearts bunting is sure to help you spread the love for Valentine’s Day. Whether for yourself or a loved one, Kathryn Burr at Burrilliant Creations takes us through how to make this heartfelt gift: All you need is love, and a few craft supplies. • Sewing needle, thread, and fabric pins. • Fabric for 10 bunting hearts (such as colourful, patterned craft cotton). • 10 x 14cm slender ribbons (to attach to the hearts). • Thicker 2m long ribbon (to hang the bunting from).
Step 3 • Sew each of your hearts, with the seam 1cm from the edge. (You can also sew this by hand, looping your needle and thread up and down through the fabric to create a running stitch). • Leave a 3cm gap in one side of each heart to place the stuffing in.
Step 4 • Stuff each of the hearts until plump, and then sew the gap shut.
• A piece of card (for a heart shape template).
• Tie knots in the loose thread and, for a professional finish, sew this thread through the heart and trim the excess.
• Soft polyester stuffing (fabric scraps or even cotton wool works just as well).
• Trim the edges with the pinking shears to neaten the hearts.
• Pinking shears (creates a decorative crimped edge and stops the fabric from fraying).
• Loop the long ribbon through the heart ribbons, one at a time, leaving a 15cm gap at both ends and inbetween each heart.
Step 1 • Create your card heart template (14cm wide, 14cm long). • Lay your heart template on the fabric and cut two pieces for each heart.
• Place the two pieces for each heart together, with the fabric pattern facing out on both sides. • Make a loop with the slender 14cm ribbons and place 2cm of the tips inside the middle dip of each heart, and pin in place. This will create the ribbon loop for the hearts to hang from.
D I S C O V E R I N G
• Tie a knot in the main long ribbon around each of the smaller ribbons to keep the hearts in place. • Repeat until all 10 hearts are tied onto the main ribbon. Your bunting is now all ready to proudly display, or to be given as a beautiful gift for a special someone this Valentine’s Day!

Weight to go Tori – My Slimming World Journey Imagine how awful it must be to wear baggy clothes when going out because you’re so ashamed of your body. Well, that was where I was in August 2015. I would put on a front to hide how I was really feeling. My self-esteem was so low and my selfbelief almost non-existent. After each of my three pregnancies, I’d allowed my weight to take over. But since then, my life has been transformed, as I lost four stone in just over a year! I just had to make the change, and lose weight, not just for me but also for the sake of my three children. Realising something drastic needed to happen, a Facebook search brought me to Slimming World, and there has just been no turning back! My first week saw a staggering five pounds weight loss, and that gave me such a boost in confidence to continue on my journey. What I love about food optimising is the freedom to enjoy real food without feeling hungry; there is no calorie counting or limits on when to eat. What’s been as brilliant for me, though, has been the fact that, now, my whole family are eating healthily, as I’m cooking so much more “from scratch”. I must admit that chocolate, cheese and the occasional drop of gin are proving a temptation, and I’m enjoying these as my “Syns”. I was really apprehensive before walking through the doors at my first Slimming World group, but I soon realised that I didn’t need to feel this way, as I was welcomed with open arms – no humiliation, no judgement. My consultant has been so supportive and is always on hand to contact, at times when the going has been a bit tough. My group members even voted for me to win the title of “Miss Slinky” and “Woman of the Year”, as they found my story and success so inspirational.
BEFORE JOINING SLIMMING WORLD 10
I can confidently say good-bye to the old me, who wore the baggy clothes! I can now confidently stride on, a much happier soul, now with much more energy and drive, and someone now wanting to share with others this great feeling of being slim and much healthier than before. I want others to feel the same as I do now and that’s the reason I have chosen to become a Slimming World consultant - to inspire and help others to achieve their dream.

Valentine’s Day Special
- The Top 10 Aphrodisiac Foods (DO try this at home!)
The food you consume can have a direct impact on your sex life, affecting your hormones, brain chemistry and energy and stress levels. Some foods have psychoactive properties, others arouse because they are psychologically suggestive, and some can actually increase blood flow to the genitals.
10
ASPARAGUS
An English herbalist from the 17th century, Nicholas Culpepper, wrote that asparagus “stirs up lust in man and woman.” It is a great source of potassium, fibre, vitamin B6, vitamins A and C, thiamin and folic acid.
9
ALMONDS
Throughout the centuries, almonds were regarded as fertility symbols. The aroma of almond supposedly arouses passion in females and provides high doses of vitamin E, magnesium and even fibre.
8 AVOCADO
Its shape gives it away! The Aztecs called the avocado ahuacuatl, or “testicle tree”, seeing the fruit hanging in pairs on the tree as resembling testicles. Avocado is rich with folic acid, vitamin B6 and potassium.
7
BANANAS
BASIL
Basil has a fantastic aroma that is said to have an aphrodisiac effect; it is also very stimulating. Using sweet basil in a pasta sauce will be sure to get your heart racing! 14

OYSTERS
Pure chocolate, the king of natural aphrodisiacs, contains a host of compounds including anandamide, the psyochoactive feel-good chemical, and PEA (phenylethylamine), the “love chemical,” which releases dopamine in the pleasure centres of the brain and peaks during orgasm.
Figs are steeped in history, being mentioned in the Bible (Adam and Eve wore fig leaves to cover their private parts), whilst the ancient Greeks held them as sacred, associating them with love and fertility.
Very strong smelling and perhaps a bit of a turn-off, but likely to provide added strength to the male, as the allicin in the garlic will increase levels of blood flow in vital regions!
By its shape, the connection with sexuality is quite obvious, but bananas are loaded with potassium, magnesium and B vitamins. It also contains chelating minerals and the bromeliad enzyme, said to enhance the male libido.
6
5
Bourne
Oysters may be thought an aphrodisiac because of their high zinc content, which helps produce sperm and increases libido. Raw oysters are best served with a glass of chilled Champagne for a truly romantic meal!
1
HONEY
Honey is a great source of boron, a trace mineral that helps the body use and metabolize oestrogen, the female sex hormone, and this mineral may also enhance testosterone levels in the blood, the hormone responsible for promoting sex drive and orgasm in both men and women. fe br u a r y 2 0 1 8

Gurkha 91 – Nepalese Delights Come to Bourne Names can convey various messages to us all. “Gurkha”, for example, has connotations of those loyal and fearless fighters from the Himalayan state of Nepal, to the north of India. The Gurkhas’ reputation for diligent and unwavering service to Great Britain and its people, for over two centuries, is well documented, and we were clearly reminded of this on a recent visit … to a restaurant in Bourne! The front-of-house team of Pramod, Giri and Krishna ooze genuine charm, and this trait has not gone unnoticed by the many recommendations, either by the spoken word or on social media, which continue to make this eatery Bourne’s leading restaurant. But it is not just that crucial attention to small details and cheerful conversation with the customer that has many of us returning to Gurkha 91, time and again. Pramod can proudly shed light on his country and why Nepalese cuisine is different from traditional Indian food. “It combines a range of ingredients and techniques with their own gastronomic history. The people of Nepal have many different backgrounds and ethnicities, and this multitude of influences is reflected within the country’s cuisine. Nepalese dishes are generally healthier than most other South Asian cuisine, relying less on using fats, and more on vegetables, meats, pickled ingredients and salads.” The small kitchen team, with award-winning chef, Bhimlal Khanal, along with Dharma Jugjali, have fifteen years of dedication and wide experience in Nepalese cuisine, and have been working tirelessly to create some of their
distinctive dishes, since the restaurant on North Street opened in December 2015. This includes trying to satisfy all sorts of dietary requirements, according to the customers’ needs and choices. Momo (minced lamb or vegetable dumplings), Spicy Lamb Kidney, Himali (marinated chicken or lamb with chef’s special sauce), and Goat Special Curry are but a handful of the dishes already well established and popular on the menu. Chef, Bhimlal’s passion for food and cooking has given diners an opportunity to savour the unique tastes from Nepal, as he seeks out the finest ingredients, many herbs and spices of which need to be imported, specifically from Nepal, (including Jimbu, Asafoetida and Nigella seeds). Pramod ensures that his meat, meanwhile, is sourced from wellrespected local butcher, Alec Day, on Abbey Road. This support for other local businesses and organisations has also involved his offering prizes for charity raffles and a food stall to help raise funds for Bourne Lions. Recent refurbishments have enhanced the appearance of the restaurant, with modern, very stylish furniture and fittings, whilst tasteful murals of some of Nepal’s fascinating scenery adorn the walls. The “91” part of the restaurant’s name, if you were wondering, refers to the number of dishes on their first menu. I would rather see it as a challenge - to discover, in future, just how many of this number could possibly be as delicious as the Salmon Tikka Tandoori, the Hariyali King Prawn or the Chicken Nepal that we enjoyed on our recent visit to Gurkha 91. Besides the outstanding food menu, a wide range of cocktails is available. Pina Colada, Cosmopolitan and Tequila Sunrise, for instance, are there, alongside non-alcoholic “mocktails” like Shirley Temple, Virgin Colada and Cranberry Cooler.

“It Takes Two” - How Renu Can Help You! by Claire Saunders, Renu - Health, Beauty & Fitness
W
e know the saying that goes, “Less is more”, but let’s be honest. Sometimes, two is just plain better than one. When it comes to working out, having a friend along for the ride can be beneficial. You can get a serious workout, without being serious – it’s okay to have fun. In fact, the more fun your workouts are, the more you’re going to look forward to, and be committed to, them over the long-term. There’s absolutely no doubt that the right friend to exercise with can make your workouts more fun. Being able to laugh, encourage and motivate will make them much more enjoyable. Here are some of the benefits of working out with a friend:
Fewer skipped workouts Scheduling a gym session with a friend helps hold you accountable for getting your workout in. Meeting someone to exercise with not only motivates you to show up, but to work hard as well. Push yourself further Exercising with another person pushes you to do your workout and do it to the best of your ability. A bit of
friendly banter and encouragement can mean you get a little bit more out of your exercise session. Try new exercises Going to the gym with a friend is the perfect time to try out new exercises or classes. When trying something new, your friend will provide a confidence boost and keep your workouts interesting. At Renu, you can try up to nineteen classes a week, as part of your membership. Time Flies “Time flies when you’re having fun!”… or at least when you are distracted. Having someone to chat with lets you focus on something other than just your workout, making the time go by faster. Recover together Socialising can often be a reason you may get out of your exercise routine. A friend who’s worked up a sweat with you is likely to want to join you for a healthy post-exercise meal or snack, so you get the best of both worlds! If you would like a free trial, for either you or your friend, please call us on 01778 423923.

One of the best ways to explore them is by boat, and you’ll find luxurious vessels complete with balconies, gourmet cuisine and cocktails while you watch the sun set. The stunning wildlife includes iguanas, sea turtles, penguins and giant tortoises. Lava rock formations and cliffs are home to birds found only here, like the blue-footed boobies, red-footed boobies, the waved albatross and the Galapagos hawk. Under the water, marvel at the untouched coral reefs and shoals of tropical fish, manta rays and baby sharks. Canada for a luxury retreat in the snow The Rocky Mountaineer train is a charming and luxurious way to see the breath-taking landscape, or you could head to a town or city and base your adventure from there, with lots of options, from lodges to boutique hotels. If you’re in the Rockies, Fairmont Banff Springs is a superb castle-style hotel, perched in the beautiful scenery surrounding Banff, while Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise lies on the shores of the mesmerising, bright blue, Lake Louise.

Practitioner Profile - Phoebe Smith M.Ost. - Registered Osteopath What made you consider a career in osteopathy? Osteopathy was a career that appealed to me for some time before I began my training. I saw a lot of sense in the concept of treating a patient as a whole person, rather than a collection of symptoms. When I was fourteen, our osteopath provided treatment for my mum who had injured her back. She was able to avoid surgery and return to normal life in a relatively short time. Up until this point I had wanted to study medicine; however, I was so impressed by this holistic alternative that I began to consider a career as an osteopath instead. In the end, I took the long way around, studying languages and spending several years in Canada before I realised that Osteopathy was still calling me. I travelled back in 2011to train as a mature student.
Where did you study for your degree and where do you practise now? I trained at the College of Osteopaths and completed my Masters degree (M.Ost.) last year. During my first year of training I gained some external qualifications so that I was able to start to work as a mobile manual therapist while I was studying. This work, together with over 1300 hours of pre-qualification clinical experience, smoothed the transition into my new career following graduation. I joined Bridge View Osteopaths in Boston in February 2017, and the Wellhead Practice in Bourne last November. Between these clinics and my mobile work I’m pretty busy these days! What type of patients do you see? Everyone! I have a special interest in paediatric patients and in musculoskeletal problems that can be experienced during and after pregnancy. In a typical day, though, I see a whole range of patients, from babies
to the elderly, and everyone in between. I use a variety of techniques so that I can tailor a treatment to the most appropriate for the patient. I would use very different techniques for a sixweek-old with digestive problems than I would use for a twenty-four-year-old with back ache, for example. What do you enjoy most about osteopathy? One of the loveliest things about being an osteopath is that our appointments are nice and long so I can take time to really get to know my patients, and understand how their lives are affected. I know what it means for them to be able to get back to work, to advance in the sport they love, to be able to walk to the shops unassisted or merely to be out of pain. For this reason, I’ll never tire of watching patients improve, helping them to understand and manage their condition, and knowing that their lives are changed for the better. Okay, so when you are not fixing people what do you like doing? The flexibility of a clinic schedule means that I am able to offer appointments into the evenings, so I often have the opportunity for an early gym session or cup of coffee with friends. My partner, David, and I love to travel, so weekends are often spent exploring new places or planning our next adventure; otherwise you’ll find me in the garden reading my latest book in the sunshine, watching a new film at the cinema if it’s raining, or at an ice hockey game in Nottingham, if we can get tickets!

Do I Need To Count Calories To Lose Weight?
Many people find the idea of weighing and measuring their food and then tracking the calorie value too much of a faff. Most diet plans and slimming clubs find ways of getting around the need to count calories by using a points system or some other method of measure and control. So what is the answer? Well, as always when it comes to nutrition, the answer is ‘it depends’! Ultimately, calories count. If you want to lose weight, you have to create a calorie deficit; this means eating fewer calories than your body uses each day. Irrespective of the diet you choose, all weight-loss plans work by creating a calorie deficit. The best way to guarantee that you remain within a deficit is certainly to track calories. Indeed, if you’re already very lean and wanting to lose weight for sport/athletic purposes, then calorie tracking is probably your only bet for guaranteed results. That said, for the general public simply wanting to shift a few pounds, there are easier ways. Here are a few ideas, including tracking, if that suits you. Get Tracking With easy access to the internet and calorie tracking apps such as My Fitness Pal, calorie tracking has never been easier or more readily available. Most people have their phone with them and find it simple to track as they go. However, some
24
D I S C O V E R I N G
people still find the whole tracking process inconvenient. Record and Reduce Record everything you eat for one week. Everything! Weigh and measure your food and review what you’ve eaten that week. Estimate a 25% reduction in your food intake and eat at this lower intake for four weeks. Do this for four weeks and then check your scale weight. If you’ve created a deficit, you will see a reduction on the scales. If you don’t see a weight reduction, repeat the process of recording and reducing. Aim for a loss of no more than half to one and a half pounds each week.
Bev Thorogood is a Level 3 Qualified Personal Trainer and Nutrition Coach with over twenty years’ experience within the fitness industry.
The Power of Thirds Try simply reducing everything you eat by a third. An easy way to do this is to reduce your dinner plate size and then reduce the amount of food you put on it proportionally. Use Your Hands Nature is very clever; it gives us hands that are just the right size for our body! So a 5’1” female will have proportionally smaller hands than a 6’ 2” male. By using simple hand measurements to estimate our portion sizes we can regulate our food intake pretty well. Use the guides below to help you. If you’d like help with weight loss or improving your nutritional habits, call me for a free, no obligation chat on 07824 819060.

My Story
m/VHolder
Ever since I can remember, I have always been obese. As a child, I would hear my parents talking to friends about it. “Don’t worry, it’s just puppy fat!” they would say. “She’ll hit puberty and the weight will fall off her!” But it didn’t. I was taken to various slimming and support groups, but just couldn’t seem to shift the pounds. My selfconfidence and self-esteem was low. At the age of fourteen, I sadly lost my mum, just at the age when a girl really needs her mum to teach her how to cook, live healthily, respect her body and support her through adolescence. I turned to food as a comfort, and my weight ballooned out of control, causing my self-confidence, selfesteem and self-belief to plummet even further. I pushed myself to work hard at school - it was a way of avoiding social occasions at times – and got good GCSEs, A Levels and a degree. But I was still obese. It wasn’t until I hit my 30s, married with three children, that I decided enough was enough. I needed to set a proper example to my children before it was too late. Carrying extra weight increases the risk of heart disease, strokes, type 2 diabetes, sleep apnoea and osteoarthritis, to name but a few. I wanted to see my children grow up, and minimise the risk of them losing their mum unnecessarily. That’s when I found Cambridge Weight Plan. I was sceptical, but having tried so many other approaches to weight-loss and being unsuccessful, I was willing to try just about anything. I left from my first meeting with my consultant feeling sceptical, but willing to give it my all for just one week. I’d told my consultant that I wanted to lose six stone, but didn’t really think I would manage it. The thought was far too overwhelming. However, I lost ten pounds that week. That was all I needed to spur me on to the next week. I averaged a stone a month weight-loss, and hit my six stone weight-loss target in just over six months!

Cambridge Weight Plan works. It is essentially a meal replacement programme, with a choice of five different steps to choose from. Some of the steps incorporate conventional food in varying degrees. Cambridge Weight Plan is nutritionally balanced – all your vitamins, minerals, proteins etc. are included in the products. There is a step to accommodate every willpower, budget and lifestyle. Your health comes first – you will need to fill out a medical form with your consultant – there are medical protocols, as well as a medical team in place to protect your health. Appointments are friendly, non-judgemental and one-to-one (unless you choose to bring a friend or family member). There are no joining fees or contracts. Your consultant will guide you, and look after you every step of the way, both during your weightloss journey, and for maintenance.

Love and Hypnosis Love is a positive emotion and being afraid to love because you are afraid of being hurt is a survival instinct. If you wish to be in a relationship which is deeply loving and close, then you will never achieve this unless you do give freely the love that you would like to receive. To not give yourself that chance limits the potential depth of your relationships. You, in effect, have to open your heart to that love, or you will not be receptive to it. Love makes the world go around. When you fall in love, you set aside many of your barriers and stop critical thinking. The feelings of love and your desire for love can cloud what you are actually seeing in your relationship. Other people, outside your relationship, can often see those things that you are blind to. But other people cannot really help, because it is you who needs to somehow find a way to step back from your emotions and allow your more logical mind to play a bigger part in your reality. Can you love too much? The answer is, “No, you can never love too much, but it is possible to love another person in inappropriate circumstances”. Many people “love blindly”, in the sense that there is a total imbalance between logical thought and their emotional experience. Hypnosis can help to balance your emotions. Some women and men return to relationships that are unquestionably abusive; even when the level of abuse is great, they still return. We tend to think of these people as loving too much, but their love is inappropriate, as opposed to being too much. If we consider, for a moment, love and hate as being opposite emotions, it is easily possible to hate too much, and hate in any degree is a dangerous and destructive emotion.
Loving someone intensely who does not return your feelings can definitely build uncomfortable emotions, which are difficult to cope with. Getting over a broken relationship, when you still love that other person, can be a very tough task indeed. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy gives you a clear state of mind to enable you to step back from your emotions and see things from a different perspective. If you are in a situation where your emotions have taken over to a point where logic is suppressed, then you have to find a way in which to restore this imbalance. You can access your subconscious mind, and you can observe instinctive thoughts and behaviours, and balance your emotional reactions and experiences. You can effectively train your mind to focus and to respond in a more appropriate manner. Sigmund Freud advocated over a century ago that people in love, have a similar relationship to people who are under hypnosis. Hypnotherapy is a pleasant, effective way to change this balance, to achieve the balance which works for you. “The meeting of two personalities is like the contact of two chemical substances; if there is any reaction, both are transformed” – Carl Jung.

Our thanks to everyone who attended the annual Community Carol Service held at Bourne Corn Exchange. It was a wonderful evening and to see so many people coming together in Bourne and the surrounding villages was very special. We hope that you enjoyed the evening and took away the important message that ‘People need the Lord’ – now, more than ever. The donations that were kindly given raised £384.61 and this will be used for our community work. We would also like to thank R. J. Scholes for donating the programmes and their continued support. May you all have a peaceful and blessed 2018. Captains Kevin and Wendy Brown.
1940s Evening of Music and Dance - Saturday February 17th Let Lincolnshire’s finest make it an evening to remember at Bourne Corn Exchange, as you are transported back in time by the hugely impressive Dream Belles. This duo re-create the sounds of the 1940s and it’s up to you whether or not you dress for the occasion in the “glad rags” of the day. One thing is for sure though – you will be entertained … make no mistake! This is but one of many activities that Bourne and District Lions have been responsible for having organised. Santa Claus made his traditional journeys around Bourne and district in the month leading up to Christmas, thanks to the 34

organisational prowess of the Lions, and they would like to publicly thank the residents of Bourne and the surrounding villages for their generous donations given during those visits. During December 2017, over £8000 was raised which, over the next year, will be distributed to good local causes. Although a lot of the work by the Lions goes unnoticed by the majority, Bourne Lions has, over the last forty years, raised thousands and thousands of pounds, helping to make our community a better place to live, and helping those less fortunate than ourselves.

An Appeal for Rainbow Hospice A heart-felt request has reached us from a reader, Mrs Kerrie Morgado, and we include some of her e-mail in the hope that you kind readers out there can help her raise much-needed funds for the Rainbow Hospice. “Rainbow is a Hospice who supports children and young people, and is a place where life-limited children and their families can find care and support. My family and I have suffered the very sad loss of my beautiful granddaughter, Rosalie, who was just seven days old when she passed away. When Rosalie was born, we were informed that she would only survive for a matter of hours/days, as her bowels had not developed as they should. During my daughter’s pregnancy, and after Rosalie was born, the charity ‘Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People’ were phenomenal in helping my daughter, and are still in contact with her, offering support, which has helped immensely in our grieving of Rosalie. In memory of Rosalie, and to raise funds for ‘Rainbow Hospice’, we will be holding a Charity Evening
on Saturday March 10th 2018 at The Cresset in Peterborough. During the evening, we will have a raffle and an auction. We are hoping, and would be very grateful if you would be willing to offer a prize for either our raffle or auction or, if more convenient for yourselves, a cash donation, which would allow us to purchase a prize to raffle or to auction.
This “Meningitis Memory Tree” was erected at the end of November and the public were able to purchase their bow from Stephanie’s shop, for a mere 50p, and then place it on the tree, along with a message in memory of a loved one they may have lost. f e brua ry 2018
Lovely to report that this five year old, Finnley Green, is prepared to share his winnings with big brother, Tyler, aged nine. Congratulations on correctly matching the novelty pictures in December’s issue with those placed in the shop windows around the town, and scooping £100 cash. Both boys attend Bourne Abbey Primary School, and now find they have more friends than ever before!
Should you be able to help in any way, please send your donation to Kerrie Morgado, 82 High Street, Billingborough, Sleaford, NG34 1QD, otherwise I would be happy to collect. Should you have any questions associated with this request, please do not hesitate to contact me, (via e-mail at: lucy. jackson1998@hotmail.co.uk, or: 07850 092 115).
Thanks to our “thoughtful, caring community” of Bourne
Thanking you all for having read this request and hopefully acting upon it.”
The Meningitis Memory Tree – Another Fabulous Effort! Anyone having had the pleasure, recently, to venture off North Street or West Street in Bourne and explore the many delights of Crown Walk, will have seen a large Christmas tree festooned with small, colourful ribbons, outside Stephanies, Bourne’s sole floristry shop.
Cheers, bro!!!
It all began twelve years ago, when local mum, Hayley Pateman, tragically lost her seven month old son, Alexander to meningitis. Wishing to raise awareness of the condition and funds to tackle the killer disease, Hayley and her friend, Steph Romaine, initiated the idea of a Memory Tree, and every year since then, this heart-warming tradition has raised literally thousands of pounds. This year, the total reached over £220. Hayley and Steph thank everyone for yet another fabulous wave of generosity from the kind people of Bourne and the local villages.
All the volunteers at Bourne Foodbank would like to say a huge “thank you” to the many wonderfully kind and generous people of Bourne and surrounding district for their exceptional generosity during December. We received gifts of Christmas items, food, toiletries and other essentials, as well as Christmas presents, toys and financial donations. Many needy clients came to the foodbank during this time and were overwhelmed by what we were able to give them, thanks to the generosity of so many donors. It is so very wonderful to belong to such a thoughtful, caring community…………Thank you! www.bournefoodbank.org.uk

Gardening
The Potting Shed February already! An odd month for the gardener, as days can range from below freezing to overcast and wet, to sunny and spring-like. More than any other month, you need to watch the local conditions and act accordingly. After a fairly easy time in the allotment over the past few months, it is time to start thinking about the crops that you will grow this year, planting some seeds and preparing the soil. If you have not completed your winter digging, now is the time, so long as the soil is not too wet or frozen. Incorporate as much rotted down manure and compost as you can and then cover to keep the soil warm and some of the rain off. Runner bean and potato trenches can be prepared by digging to a depth of a spade and mixing in well- rotted compost. These can be left open until planting time. Make sure that you have got all of your seed potatoes by the end of the month and that they are spread out in a seed tray, or in egg boxes, in a light, cool room where they can “chit” (sprout shoots) before being planted out. If the “chits” look pale and spindly, the room is probably too warm or too dark. A number of seeds can be planted indoors, ready for planting out when the weather improves, and peas and broad beans can be planted out under cloches. Seeds that can be planted indoors or under cover include; broad beans, Brussels, leeks, onions, salad leaves, tomatoes, peas, spinach, summer cabbage, sprouting broccoli: if the ground isn’t frozen, plant out garlic and shallots. A good idea for sowing peas is to use lengths of plastic guttering: half fill them with good quality seed compost and

sow the seeds about two inches apart, cover with compost, water and keep in a light spot under cover. Plant out by sliding them off the guttering into a shallow trench. What could be tastier than a rhubarb crumble made with fresh pink rhubarb? If your rhubarb crowns show signs of activity, now is an excellent time to force an early sweet harvest by covering with a big bucket. Other jobs that can be carried out are:• Removing dead leaves from cabbages and sprouts –if they start to rot, they can spread mould and mildew. • Make sure winter cabbages, cauliflowers and broccoli are netted against hungry pigeons, whose food supply is a little short at this time of year. • Prune autumn raspberry canes by cutting right down to the ground. • Bare-rooted fruit trees can still be planted. • Feed and mulch fruit trees and bushes. • Winter prune apples, pears, currants, blackberries, hybrid berries, gooseberries. • The compost heap might benefit from a bit of attention. Rake it through with a fork to aerate it, add water if it seems dry and then re-cover it to keep it warm. • Order any seeds for the coming year and plan this year’s crop rotation. Happy Digging!

Your Finances
Year-End Tax Planning
by Paul Ross, Financial Planner at Landmark IFA Ltd
T
ax planning, and taking a little thought and time, can result in more money in your pocket. Income Allowance: If you are married, ensure that you both use your personal income tax allowances. If a spouse has insufficient income to use their £11,500 allowance, think about putting income-generating assets in their name, as no further income tax liability will arise. If neither one of you pay higher or additional rate income tax, one of you can transfer 10% of their allowance to the other, saving tax of up to £230 per year. For high earners, (those earning over £100,000 per year), the personal allowance is reduced by £1 for every £2 of income over the threshold. This results in an effective top rate of tax, on income between £100,000 and £122,000, of 60%. Strategies that reduce taxable income can save significant amounts of tax. These include making pension contributions, charitable donations, and transferring income-producing assets into a spouse’s name. Dividend Allowance: The first £5,000 of dividend income is tax-free. If you run your own business or have investments that produce dividends, ensure you take advantage of this allowance.
Personal Savings Allowance: The personal savings allowance of up to £1,000 (£500 for higher rate tax payers), allows interest up to these amounts to be tax-free. Individual Savings Accounts (ISAs): You can invest up to £20,000 each tax year into an ISA, and the money held is largely free from personal taxes. Make sure to utilise these allowances, as they cannot be carried forward to future years. You can also invest £4,128 into a Junior ISA or Child Trust Fund. Pension Contributions: Pension contributions can reduce your income tax liability. The government provides tax relief of 20% at source on individual contributions, meaning that for a £3,600 contribution, only £2,880 comes out of your pocket. As an individual, you can contribute up to 100% of your annual salary or £3,600, whichever is higher, and claim tax relief. The standard annual allowance is £40,000, subject to the extent of your annual earnings. This is reduced for high earners,
but unused allowances can be carried forward in some circumstances. Employers can theoretically contribute an unlimited amount to a personal pension of an employee; however, the contribution should be justified as a reasonable business expense. This is particularly useful if you run your own limited company. Rent-a-Room: You can generate taxfree income from renting out a spare room and use rent-a-room relief, which was increased to £7,500 per annum from April 2016. Capital Gains Exemption: Use your CGT exemption (including for minor children), which is £11,300 for the 2017/18 tax year. This allowance is often used in respect of shareholdings, but selling and re-acquiring the same shares, (“bed and breakfasting”), within thirty days loses the benefit of a disposal that utilised this annual allowance. Venture Capital Trusts (VCTs)/ Enterprise Investment Schemes (EISs): Qualifying investments of up to £200,000 for VCTs, and £1,000,000 for EISs, attract tax relief of 30%, and provide tax-free capital gains, if held for a minimum term. Seed EISs offer tax relief of 50%. These investments are high risk, and advice from an appropriately qualified independent adviser is recommended.

D-Tech Electronics
– A New Face in the Burghley Centre We are sometimes advised “not to give up the day job”, when we attempt something different, which maybe doesn’t quite cut it. Well, it’s just as well for all users of mobile phones, iPads, Play Stations and the like, (i.e. almost all of us), that Dom Vidler-Green took no notice, but instead, did give up his day job! This qualified electrician with a long-held passion for all things electronic, decided to take on the challenge of starting up his own business, as 2018 dawned, and so D-Tech Electronics arrived in the Burghley Centre in Bourne. For almost three years, Dom had been carrying out repairs on phones and tablets in his spare time, so was clearly aware that the demand for this increasingly important service would be there. However, his first few weeks have proven to be so busy that he has even taken on a part-time assistant, John, to shoulder some of the burden. Dom can now focus on repairing phones and tablets, whilst training John up to work more on the laptops and desktops. Waves of encouragement and high praise on social media continue to flow. The gist of what delighted customers are commenting upon are Dom’s knowledge and advice he’s happy to provide; his approachable personality; the competitive costs involved; and the speed with which the repaired appliance can be returned to its owner – all vital ingredients for any successful service provider. Dom’s website, www.dtechelectronics.co.uk , includes the comprehensive range of services he can provide, from repairing phone screens and installing new internal components and batteries, through repairing iPad and tablet screens, cameras and speakers, to repairing and upgrading laptops and desktops. Sales of some phones, laptops, games consoles, desktops and tablets form part of this burgeoning business too. He has one wall of his shop dedicated to a display of all manner of accessories, including charger cables, headphones, screen protectors, phone cases, and car sat. nav. and phone holders. Dom is also willing to part-exchange certain appliances, whilst

another wall has shelves bulging with pre-owned DVDs and computer games, acting as the colourful magnet to attract the inquisitive passers-by. Once inside, notices inform of the user-friendly opening hours, which Dom is keen to inform us are also subject to flexibility, (Monday to Saturday, from 9am to 6pm, with Wednesday’s opening being 9am to 1pm). As befitting any tech-savvy operation like D-Tech Electronics, card payments are welcome, be they contactless, Android Pay or Apple Pay. (Used fivers would also work!)

Legal Corner
The Employment Tribunal By Richard Wood – Double & Megson
The Employment Tribunal came into being in 1978. The idea in the beginning was that each of these tribunals would be accessible and straightforward and that people would not need to instruct lawyers to assist them. As with most areas of life over the years though, it did not take long before matters became more complicated, and lawyers had to become involved.
Employment Law is often seen as being somewhat political, which is perhaps unfortunate. For instance, the period of time that an employee has needed to gain full employment rights and protection has, over the last forty years, varied from six months to two years. It is presently two years for most rights. However, the good news is that employees’ rights have grown significantly over the last four decades and now involve protection in relation to many types of discrimination, and these rights have been consolidated in the Equality Act 2010. There have been rights for employees with disabilities and even an extension of rights in relation to parental matters, depending upon the circumstances of the case and the employer themselves.
Since 2010, two extra hurdles were brought into operation, to try to reduce the number of claims being made. The first was in relation to court fees, which have now been suspended, and the second was that of a new compulsory form of ACAS Conciliation. Most claims have to be made within three months of an event occurring, upon which an employee wishes to complain but, before they can go to the Employment Tribunal, they have to use the Compulsory ACAS Early Conciliation Scheme. Advice should always be taken as to the deadline for issuing the claim if the ACAS conciliation fails. This is because different dates apply depending on when the Conciliation commences.

Simple Steps to get your Finances in Order – Professionally and Hassle-free! THERE aren’t many of us who particularly enjoy talking about financial planning (unless of course it’s our chosen career path!) – and perhaps even less of us who fully understand the many courses of action available. Financial planning is an ongoing process to help us make sensible decisions about money that can, ultimately, help us achieve our goals in life. It’s not just about buying products like a pension or an ISA. There are many decisions which we have to make during the course of our lives and, at significant life stages, that means carefully planning our cash.

There is also the legal side to consider. It may be a surprise to know that – according to research – one in four people aged fifty-five and over do not have a will, a legal document which determines who receives your assets and estate when you die.

Will-making is certainly not just a thought that should be reserved for the older generation. In fact, making a will or an LPA while younger, healthy and of sound mind can allow you to get your finances in order and continue to enjoy your life – knowing that things will be taken care of when you are not long able to, or have the mental capacity to do so.

Which Internet Security Suite should I Use?

by Taff Lovesey, Lites PC
t one time I was happy to recommend the use of free antivirus solutions. However, in recent years, things have changed and viruses now account for only a small part of the threat to your online security, as criminals turn to other, more successful methods, for stealing your data or loading malicious content onto your system. As such, my recommendation is now to invest in a full Internet Security suite.
carry out a summary of the top review sites to determine which solutions are performing most effectively.
Areas where the free internet security solutions are weak and usually fall short are:
➋ Kaspersky (see note below)

Malicious Websites: Using schemes, cybercriminals can lure you to phishing sites, fake websites designed to steal your information. You can also land on sites that check your computer for software vulnerabilities it can exploit so that it can install malware. Privacy Risks: With the complicated and ever-changing privacy settings of most social networks, you could be sharing more information than you intended. Every detail you post online could be collected to build up a persona and used for identity theft. Information Theft: Data-stealing malware uses different tactics to get your information for the purposes of fraud. SPAM and Malicious E-mail: Today’s spam is crafted to closely resemble legitimate e-mail. Sometimes, the only distinction between a fake and a real message are a few altered links. Unsecured WiFi and Home Network Security: Cybercriminals can easily hide behind an unsecure network and use your connection to perform malicious activities. Which Internet Security Suite should I choose? A quick search on the web will reveal that there are many solutions. As an independent IT advisor, I occasionally

At the latter end of 2017 the following security solutions were the top ten performing solutions, comparing results from several independent test sources.
➎ Trend ➏ McAfee ➐ Avast Free ➑ Avira ➒ AVG ➓ Webroot The top three, (Bitdefender, Kaspersky and Norton) were streets ahead of the chasing pack. None of the testers recommended using the in-built Windows Defender as a sole source of protection. A word on Kaspersky The corporate offices of Kaspersky are based in Moscow and recently the British Government advised against using Kaspersky due to this; citing it as a potential gateway for the Russians to access personal and restricted data. Some reviews support this view and advise against its use, others say it is scare-mongering. Personally, I would not use Kaspersky as my main solution, given the current political climate.

Let Newton Fallowell Make Your New Year’s Dreams a Reality by Philip Bell, Senior Valuer, Newton Fallowell
T
his month is a great month; it’s when most of us really start to feel that it’s a New Year. This is mainly due to the January hangover subsiding, and paydays finally catching up with where we want them to be. The nights are getting lighter, little by little, and the hopes and dreams of a New Year stretch out before us. ‘‘We have all the time in the world’’, to quote the late great Louis Armstrong. If you’ve not heard of him, use some music streaming thingy of your choice to listen to that song, it’s a great one!
The housing market is really getting into gear now; most of us have blitzed the unwanted gifts and old junk that littered our homes, into Charity shops and the tip, and now we’re wondering what else we can do to make our homes better. Many of us will then realise that home isn’t what it was three or four years ago, maybe even longer for the veterans of the housing market. Some things just cannot be fixed with some new décor. That’s why many people start to turn to the housing market to
find that fix … and that is where we come in. We have years of experience in the local market to advise you on what’s best for you and your home. Don’t forget, we’re the leading agent in Bourne for customer service with our excellent rating award provided by the Best Estate Agents Guide. Don’t just take our word for it, look at our competition versus us. We’ll make your next move a positive experience and help make your New Year plans a reality.

Discovering . . . The glue factory
Rex Needle
A
n obnoxious smell frequently hung over Bourne fifty years ago, a stench so powerful that in hot weather people clutched their throats and covered their mouths with handkerchiefs for fear of being contaminated. The unpleasant odour became so unbearable and complaints from inhabitants so vociferous that public health officials were eventually forced to take action. The source of the smell was traced to the industrial complex at the Slipe in the South Fen, then occupied by an animal waste processing plant, also known as the solvent extraction or glue factory, whose industrial odours became notorious as “the terrible pong”. The business was owned by T W Mays and Sons Ltd, a company with diverse agricultural interests, particularly fallen stock which were processed at a slaughterhouse on the banks of the Bourne Eau behind Eastgate. Hooves, horns and bones from the various animal carcasses were turned into glue, a malodorous process and one that plagued the town, particularly in hot weather when the stench became so pungent that it wafted in from the fen on a prevailing wind and penetrated houses, offices, shops and schools, and as a result the factory soon became notorious throughout the neighbourhood. For over twenty years, townspeople put up with the

terrible pong and the company spent time and money trying to eradicate the stench but to no avail and in 1978, after an eloquent appeal by Councillor Douglas Reeson (1918-2010), South Kesteven District Council ordered them to curtail the nuisance or halt production. “I live a mile and a half from the factory and can clearly detect it when the wind is in the right direction”, he said. “The smell is quite appalling. One cannot explain just how abominable it is. I would like to be able to bring a sample of it here in a can in order that members can experience it for themselves. I do not think that anyone should be asked to live with this sort of unpleasant odour and there are thousands of people living in this town who might reasonably expect some relief from this awful nuisance.” But the end was in sight because the factory ceased production in 1980 with the closure of the T W Mays company’s operations in Bourne. The landmark factory chimney was demolished in 2005, its disappearance marking the end of an era and providing a final farewell to the terrible pong, while the entire area is now being redeveloped for light industrial and business use. id you know that you might have a prehistoric creature living in your garden? Hedgehogs are one of our oldest native species – they shared the earth with sabre-toothed tigers and woolly mammoths 15 million years ago, and now they snuffle about in our gardens, helpfully eating the slugs and snails that damage our plants. Sadly, hedgehog numbers have declined sharply over the last fifty years, with the estimated population dropping from 36.5 million to just 1.5 million. Habitat loss has played a big role in their decline, as the hedgerows they call home are destroyed. Despite their reduced numbers, we still see plenty of hedgehogs here in the practice, particularly as autumn turns to winter and those who are too small or unwell to hibernate are often found wandering about in daylight, a common sign of illness in this nocturnal species. When a hedgehog is brought to us, our first task after examining it for injuries, is to warm it up as they are often hypothermic. We weigh the hedgehog – they need to weigh around 550-600g to survive hibernation, and many of the youngsters found at the beginning of winter are barely halfway to this goal. We will also often take a faecal sample to examine under the microscope – wild hedgehogs almost always have some internal worms which don’t usually bother healthy adults, but if the number of worms becomes too high, the infestation can make the hedgehog very ill and is sometimes fatal. We examine the sample to check how many worm eggs and larvae are present, and to identify the species so that we can begin the appropriate course of treatment, which usually involves daily injections for two weeks.
it is and call your vets for advice before moving it. If you are going to handle a wild hedgehog, put on gloves or use a towel – not only are they prickly, but they are also often carrying fleas and ticks! Place the poorly hedgehog in a box with a hot water bottle wrapped in a thick towel, and call your vet to arrange to bring it in. The British Hedgehog Preservation Society website has lots of tips for making your garden hedgehog-friendly, and instructions for making a hedgehog feeding station so that you can put out food for your garden visitors without it being eaten by neighbourhood cats or foxes (cat food is a favourite among hedgehogs, although steer clear of any containing fish, and dried mealworms are also popular). Avoid using slug pellets or other poison, as this can be lethal to the hedgehogs that eat the slugs. If you are looking for a more hands-on way to help, we do have details of local hedgehog charities that may be in need of volunteers to look after baby hedgehogs until the spring arrives and they can be released.
Signs that a hedgehog may be unwell include disorientation (being out in daylight, walking in circles or staggering, not noticing when humans approach), excessive parasites such as ticks, noisy laboured breathing, leaving food uneaten and not curling into a ball when touched. If unsure, it’s best to leave it where

Mayor
Words from the Mayor Councillor Paul Fellows
January can seem to go on forever and ever, but it does give us all a chance for reflection of where we are personally. Judi and I have almost completed three quarters of our time in office and I have to say it will not be an easy task to hand the chains over, as we are both getting so much from the roles that we are so privileged to be doing. Meeting so many lovely people, both in Bourne and when we have been invited to represent Bourne around the county at some amazing events, will not be something that either one of us will ever forget. January itself, however, is always a quiet time, and we have not had many invitations or duties to carry out on Bourne’s behalf. It was really good to be able to welcome the Nottingham Building Society to Bourne towards the end of December, and great not to have another gap on the high street. I will be arranging to do some more work experience days and so, if you feel you have a day when you could use some help from a nottotally-competent-but-very-willing ‘old mayor’, please contact Bourne Town Council. The number of people who take time to be supportive and helpful within our community is inspiring, and I’ve no doubt that they will
continue to do just as much in the coming year. The benefits of communities growing and supporting each other are huge. The two projects I am supporting and raising funds for, I believe, are ones that will provide lasting benefit to Bourne. The project to turn the Town Hall into a Community Arts Centre is moving forwards positively, and an immense amount of work is being done by the Trustees, under the leadership of Charles Housego. Throughout the year, expect to see, and please support, events taking place in the Town Hall. This is not a dream; it is a project that will happen. The Dimension Skate Park needs

to raise funds so that it can move to the next, and most important, phase … being built! It has taken far too many years to get to this point but if you believe, as I do, that Bourne really needs this facility, please help out in any way you can to contribute to fund raising. Please visit the Skate Park’s website for further information, www. dimensionskatepark.org.uk On February 3rd, I will be hosting the ‘Mayorsquerade’ at the Corn Exchange. Organised by the Bourne Events Team, this is an unashamed fund-raiser for my charities that will be a night of ‘posh frocks’, masks, great food and entertainment. Tickets are available from Bourne Town Council and Crown Jewellers. fe br u a r y 2 0 1 8

School News Artsmark Accolade For TWO Bourne Primary Schools
art provision, which we enjoy sharing and celebrating in our local community.”
Bourne Abbey C of E Primary Academy and Bourne Westfield Primary Academy have both recently been awarded Artsmark.
AND PLATINUM FOR BOURNE WESTFIELD ! As one of the few schools in the country to be awarded the PLATINUM ARTSMARK Award, Bourne Westfield is now reaching out to support other local schools to broaden their curricula with a range of inspiring arts activities.
Artsmark is awarded by Arts Council England, and provides a clear framework for schools to plan, develop and evaluate their arts and cultural provision. It was designed to help unlock the potential of children, help to develop character and talent, and increase their knowledge and understanding in all areas of the arts. Schools are awarded Silver, Gold or Platinum, based on their achievements in bringing ambition to life through the creative Arts and supporting creative development in children. Of the 3,133 schools that have registered for Artsmark so far, only 386 schools have achieved the award: so to have two Bourne schools with the award is some achievement! ARTSMARK GOLD FOR BOURNE ABBEY! Bourne Abbey is delighted that it has been reaccredited as an ARTSMARK GOLD school. The assessment panel made some lovely comments including: Through their latest Artsmark journey, the school has developed sustainable partnerships with other schools and the Case Study exemplifies the positive impact their work has had on standards across the curriculum. Your children and young people have equal opportunity to plan, experience, participate in and evaluate a diverse range of high-quality arts and cultural activities and you recognise the importance of development opportunities delivered by specialists for your staff in these areas. Your children and young people have an opportunity to further develop their knowledge, skills and understanding of arts and culture and you are working to share the expertise you have established.
The last six months have seen children from Westfield lead the way in creative musical productions, dramatic Shakespeare performances, and the Rebirth Arts Project at the Town Hall, led by Becky Beavis, Helen Graham, and Lucy Lawson. Partnerships with the Royal Opera House, the Royal Ballet and the Shakespeare in Schools Project have given children opportunities to perform “The Nutcracker” ballet, the opera “Carmen” and “Macbeth”. Westfield sourced funding last year to be able to organise training for six local schools with “Louder than Life”. This training led to a large-scale samba performance in the summer, held at Westfield, involving over eight hundred children and staff from nursery age upwards. This performance was the finale to a whole school Arts Week, where children had the opportunity to work with Arts professionals in Drama, Dance, Art and Music. Huge congratulations to both schools!
Mrs Sarah Moore, Executive Headteacher, said, “We would like to say a huge thank you to the whole school community, including our pupil Art Ambassadors and the artist Sue Rowland, who show a passion for providing high quality f e brua ry 2018

What is Love? – by Holly-Jean
Love is probably the trickiest thing to describe in the world. It’s in everyone, somewhere, but just not everyone finds it. And, that sounds super cheesy but hey-ho it’s Valentines, so grab your bucket and keep on reading – it’s about to get smooshy. Love is supposedly patient and kind. Romance apparently has a lifespan and though the majority of us seek it, most of us are actually quite confused about what ‘love’ actually means. And, as I’m writing this, I’m googling ‘what is love?’ but, it isn’t something you can actually put into words. I’m reading – “love is without judgement” and “love is loving everything that one person does”. And the cynical part of me is thinking, “Well yeah, I love my boyfriend but do I judge him when he eats his dinner, and mine too? Yes, I love him, but my god if he snores one more time I’m just... I’m just going to lose it.” All of these different depictions of love make us question everything we know; all of these opinions and different ways that people conduct their relationships and rules and stipulations - in reality, it’s all absolute rubbish. They make us question whether we are doing the whole ‘love’ thing right! But for what? You and your partner, whether they’re human, imaginary, or cat. (Whatever floats your boat, it’s 2018). Are you both happy? Whether they can be gross, or they wind you up sometimes, or sometimes you literally want to tear their perfect little head clean off – if you love them, you will just know. It will literally hit you one day when they’re laughing or even when they do the stupidest thing. It won't be a gift or

an occasion; it will be so minuscule and ridiculous that you cannot even describe it – but when you know, you’ll know. Alright, this is getting crazy soppy now and I want to be funny so, let me add this little bit. Over the Christmas break, I got a little podge – not much, but a little. And I’d recently had my nails done, so I was struggling to do my jacket up. And I said to my boyfriend, “Tom, I’m finding it so hard to actually do my jacket up at the moment!” and he remarked, lovingly, with “Well Hol, you’ve had a lot of cheese and biscuits this holiday.” My caring partner, ladies and gentlemen. I’m joking, not about what he said, it’s with me for life, but in all seriousness, and it sounds so cheesy, but I absolutely adore the big idiot. He can be infuriating, but he’s my best friend, and no matter how many times I imagine his head exploding, I could never thank him enough for showing me what love is. But I’m only on about love between partners. Love is everywhere – love is when your mum tells you to put a coat on so you don’t get cold, or when she’s way too honest about something you didn’t really need to hear. Thanks, mum! Love is packed into this strange world in little ways we couldn't even comprehend. And, I think that’s what makes it magical. This February, when you’re sick and tired of Valentine's, have a little think about not just buying someone something to prove your love, but just show them in little ways... be patient, be kind. Be everything you think love is, and I’m sure you’ll work it out. Or, the less conventional way of dealing with Valentine's – eat your bodyweight in chocolate... you got this. Police Patrol
Social Media and the Police by Sergeant 600 Rachel Blackwell
I
n October 2017, there were sixty-one calls to the police to resolve situations where one person had made comments or threats, either via Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or Messenger. In each case, a police officer had been assigned to attend, take the report and deal with the problem behaviour. In the majority of cases, this was entirely appropriate as the perpetrator needed dealing with, because their post / comment / message was obscene, menacing, threatening, or part of a longer crusade of harassment against a victim. However, in a THIRD of cases, the officer established that what had been said was petty, and the issue could have been resolved by the caller “blocking” the person, or reporting them to Facebook etc. This represented at least fifty hours of police officer time, where they were diverted away from other, more harmful, areas of police business. Examples included: • I have received three messages from an unknown Facebook user who has called me a “slut.” • I am receiving odd “Friend Requests” on Facebook from people I’ve never heard of. • Someone I know has created a fake Facebook profile to ask for her stuff back. • I am receiving messages from a fake profile to tell me my partner is having an affair. Whilst the intention is NOT to discourage callers who are genuinely fearful or intimidated by material directed at
them via Social Media, there will now be an attempt, at the call stage, to filter some of the low-level calls that can be resolved with advice to block/report the sender. Call takers will establish: • Is there a credible threat (to life, safety or property)? – in which case, we will deal with it. • Is the contact persistent/harassment, and you have taken steps to block, which have failed? – we will deal with it. • Are the posts in breach of a court order that is currently in place? – we will deal with it. • The content is more than just unkind or hurtful – but is grossly offensive, indecent, obscene or menacing. There may be other instances which don’t fit any of the above, but where the caller is particularly vulnerable, or at risk of harm, and naturally we will do what we can. However, the advice that we will try to give is this: Some posts may be upsetting or distasteful, or express an unpopular view, but are not necessarily criminal. Others may be grossly offensive and, therefore, could well meet the threshold for prosecution. For general unpleasant or inappropriate posts, in the first instance, you should contact the social media site on which the comments have been made and ask for their assistance. We hope to see more calls resolved by advice at the call stage, which will in turn free up police officers’ time to be out on their area.

Saccadic Masking

“Sorry mate, I didn’t see you”, is a familiar sound to cyclists and motorcyclists, and its acronym, ‘SMIDSY’, is becoming a regular excuse in motoring crashes. Would you believe me if I said that you are blind for between forty minutes to an hour per day? Well, you are, and it’s a visual illusion where the brain selectively blocks processing during our eye movements. This phenomenon is called saccadic masking, or visual saccadic suppression. A saccade is a quick, simultaneous movement of both eyes between two or more phases of fixation points in the same direction. Humans become effectively blind during a saccade, which is obviously very dangerous if you are a motorist. When your eyes look from one point to another, we don’t actually see everything in a smooth continuous stream, in the way that a shaky camera captures a video. We actually view it as a series of individually separate and distinct blurry images when the eye pauses. Each of these blurry and shaky images is separated by a period of temporary blindness. Our brain doesn’t like this motion of blurry images, so it automatically deletes the blurry details that come between those viewing points. This is not a problem. If you tried to process everything that you see, you would go insane, so your mind picks and chooses what to focus on. This is a trick of our brain which helps us to view things without getting dizzy or nauseated. The accuracy of our sight diminishes greatly, the further an object is away from our direct eyesight. Objects viewed directly by the centre of our eye are seen with great detail, but those seen with peripheral vision remain unclear. This
phenomenon was first described by Erdman and Dodge in 1898. It was noted, during unrelated experiments, that a person could never see the motion of their own eyes. You can confirm this by looking in a mirror and continuously looking at your left eye and then your right eye, you won’t see them moving. Our eyes send images to our brain in snapshots, and our brain then links all the frames, (fixations), to create one continuous loop. This is an illusion though, because between the images there are blind spots called saccades and we momentarily lose sight; we rely on an image sent by the brain that isn’t there. This phenomenon is the cause of many motoring crashes and next month we will discuss remedies to avoid this.
