Welcome to Your April Issue. Welcome to our April edition and I’m often surprised at just how quickly, within a few weeks, we’ve moved on from those cold, dark mornings and all of that snow – Bye bye Beast from the East! Blossom will soon be on show and summer is nearly upon us. I hope you find the wide range of topics included in this month’s magazine both informative and enjoyable. As ever, many thanks to all of the contributors and advertisers for their hard work and for your continuing support and words of encouragement. One very busy month ahead, as Easter arrives, coinciding with April Fools’ Day this year – good enough reason to pull some jolly japes regarding chocolate and bunnies, I’d have thought. As Marks and Spencers make their grand entrance in Bourne, we feature the sad impending departure of Concept from North Street. On a similar theme of “one out and one in”, as “The Barber’s Chop” appears in South Street, I’m given the opportunity to wheel out one of my favourites, yet again (groans): “I see Neal’s aren’t cutting hair any longer – they’re cutting it shorter!” Thanks to Dena at Concept and to Keith at Neal’s for all those years of service to our town. On a personal note, the saying about the two London buses coming together, after waiting so long for one, will strike a chord in our family this month. Our daughter Polly follows up her first attempt at a marathon, in Paris on April 8th, with an encore on the streets of London a fortnight later. Good luck to her and all of the other fabulous fund-raisers whose last few months of training hell will have helped make it a heavenly outcome on April 22nd! Enjoy the read.

The Area’s Greatest Losers! Being the best at losing wouldn’t normally help you to scoop an award - yet Iain from Corby Glen and Lisa from Bourne have done just that, after being named ‘Greatest Loser’ 2018.

Between them, they have lost a life-changing 4st 5½ lbs, (27.9 kg!). Iain and Lisa are members of the The Salvation Army Slimming World group and are currently the members that have lost the most weight, and feel fabulous as a result. Iain, who has lost an inspiring 2st8lbs, (16.3 kg), and is now at his personal target weight, says, “There’s absolutely nothing wrong with being a loser when it feels this good! I had high blood pressure which has significantly dropped since losing the weight. I find the Extra Easy Food Plan simple to follow, and have never felt deprived. I also exercise regularly and my recovery times are much quicker. I definitely made the right decision to join Slimming World”. Lisa, has lost a fabulous 1st 11.5lbs, (11.6 kg), and says, “I didn’t have a clue about Slimming World, but was inspired by Tori’s weight loss to join. People think slimming means going hungry, eating nothing but salad or obsessively counting every calorie you eat, but it’s not like that at all with Slimming World. I really enjoy the club’s Extra Easy Food Optimising plan, where you can virtually make any meal “Slimming World friendly”.

I’ve learned how to make small changes, like using lean meat or cooking with low calorie spray instead of oil or butter. It fits in really well with the rest of my family, and we can all eat the same meals. I know that I haven’t ‘gone on a diet’; this is a change that I’ve made for life and I have now learnt the tools to be able to keep it up. I love our 7.30pm group; it’s so friendly and I’ve made some great new friends”. Tori, who runs the The Salvation Army Slimming World group, says: “The changes I’ve seen, not only in Iain and Lisa but the whole group, are incredible. Asparagus Wrapped in Bacon You could use bacon or pancetta in this impressive little side dish. You could also do the assembly ahead of time and then roast just before serving. Asparagus is at its peak in April so enjoy!

Preheat the oven to 200°C /Gas Mark 6. Toss the asparagus in the olive oil so that all spears are well coated. Divide the asparagus into four equal bunches. Wrap each bunch in a bacon rasher, securing with a wooden skewer if necessary. Place on a roasting tray and season with salt and pepper. Roast for 10 to 15 minutes in the preheated oven, or until the bacon is crisp and the asparagus is tender.

Concept – Closing Down but it’s not Goodbye Now, sadly, Concept will be closing its doors for the final time at the end of June, and the retailing landscape of our small, but expanding, market town will be much the poorer as a consequence. From Monday March 26th, Dena will be slashing prices on many selected items by 15%, and this offer is likely to prove very popular, so make sure you don’t miss out!
It has been thirty years since Concept started trading from its North Street shop in Bourne. Dena Edis became the sole proprietor in 2006, and since then, (as reported in this magazine in April 2015), Dena and her staff have worked hard at maintaining this “wonderful example of what every town should have – a wealth of quality items to beautify any home, to add that finishing touch, or to make that special present a truly memorable one”.
Dena is planning to remain within the trade, however, and will have a stand at Heckington Show, near Sleaford, on July 28th / 29th; Sandringham Game Fair on September 8th; and Witham Hall School Fair on November 10th.
Well regarded for stocking an eclectic mix of products, brands such as Crabtree & Evelyn, Wrendale, and Gisela Graham have all proven popular with regular customers. Seasonal decorations, beautiful greeting cards and all manner of trinkets, accessories and soft furnishings have also added to Concepts long-standing reputation.

A
lack of sleep can have a major impact on mood, weight control, concentration, memory and our health and wellbeing. A good night’s sleep is not just vital for our body and mind – it is necessary for keeping our skin in tip-top condition too. Night time is when your skin cells are at their most productive, meaning they are repairing any damage done throughout the day. Here are Claire’s five top tips for a good night’s sleep.

Have a regular sleep pattern Try to go to bed at around the same time every evening and get up at around the same time every morning.

Avoid “Blue Light” Watching television, or scrolling phones and Ipads stimulates a chemical in the brain that will make it very difficult to sleep. Turn your electronic gadgets and the television off an hour before bed, have a bath, make a plan of action for the next day, or do some relaxation techniques that work for you. If you are struggling to sleep, read a book (not a kindle), the left to right action of the eyes has a hypnotic effect.

Check your diet Alcohol may help you get off to sleep, but it will disrupt you early in the morning. High sugar foods can hinder you
getting to sleep or cause you to be wide awake in the early hours. Caffeine and nicotine are stimulants that will also keep you awake. These should all be avoided if you have trouble sleeping. Magnesium stimulates hormones in the body that help regulate sleep, relieve anxiety and calm the nervous system. You find magnesium through drinking water and eating green vegetables, nuts, meat, fish and fruit. Try taking a supplement of 200 – 300 mg per day and see if it makes a difference

Cleanse your room The ideal temperature for sleep is considered to be around 17 degrees. Make sure you open your window for a few minutes every day (even in the depths of winter). This will cleanse your room and remove toxins in the air that will hinder your relaxation.

The beauty of Iceland’s tourism is that it is accessible and enjoyable all year round. Despite the lack of opportunity to get a sun tan, (with temperatures hovering around freezing point in the winter and 12°C in summer), the “land of fire and ice” is more an attraction for the eyes, not the skin. Jaw-dropping vistas, incredible natural attractions and bucket-list destinations are all part of what makes this country so special. The only problem is trying to narrow down your choices to fit the time you have there – so here are some Icelandic highlights that you can enjoy: Golden Circle The Icelandic “holy trinity” comprises Thingvellir National Park, (where visitors can see the converging lines of the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates), the powerful Gullfoss, (Europe’s largest waterfall by volume), and the erupting hot springs at Geysir. If you’re going to do one thing on your trip to Iceland, make sure it’s this! Blue Lagoon Another hotspot, quite literally, is the Blue Lagoon. This geothermal spa is set in a lava field in Grindavík and, in addition to its luminous blue waters, there is a range of lounges, spa amenities and treatments that visitors can enjoy. The waters are rich in minerals such as silica and sulphur, and bathing in the Blue Lagoon is renowned for its health benefits. Northern Lights Iceland is famous for being one of the best destinations to catch a glimpse of the amazing Aurora Borealis, (the Northern Lights). See these amazing green lights dance across

Snorkel between two continents at Slifra, which is also known for having the world’s clearest water; ride a snowmobile across one of Iceland’s 200-plus glaciers; go whale watching off the western coast; or visit a man-made ice tunnel inside Langjökull, as you go into the glacier. Exploring Reykjavík The world’s northernmost capital, and Iceland’s only city, might not have the allure of other big-ticket attractions, but there is plenty to see and do. In addition to being the cultural and arts hub of a nation, Reykjavík offers visitors plenty in the way of activities and events year-round. Whether it’s swimming, museums, high street shopping or simply taking in the mountainous surroundings which provide the stunning backdrop to city life, there’s something for everyone in Reykjavík. Take a trip to the Lutheran church, and national landmark, Hallgrímskirkja; find out more about Icelandic history at the National Museum of Iceland; or take a ferry ride to Videy Island, where Yoko Ono’s Imagine Peace Tower stands. Building work continues apace since our last article, with foundations, external walls to roof height and all ground floor internal walls now being in place. Our contractors, (D Brown Ltd), continued to work hard through the recent inclement weather, when the site was only closed for just one day. For those patients who have recently attended the Practice, you will have noticed that the building work is now having some limited impact on our existing facilities, and we ask for patience and co-operation while the work continues. Nevertheless, all areas remain in operation, and we continue to deliver our full range of services. We would like to welcome two new, additional GPs to our team: Dr Cathy Fawcett and Dr Lindsay Bomford, both experienced GPs from within the local area. Our clinical team now comprises seven GPs, two Advanced Nurse Practitioners, five Specialist Practice Nurses and our Health Care Assistant team. Soon we will also see the addition of a Senior Clinical Pharmacist providing specialist medication advice and long-term condition management. These additions form an integral part of our plans for additional services. We would also like to thank our team for their hard work during the recent unprecedented high demand placed upon NHS services over the winter months. As a result of their efforts and our ground-breaking appointment system, all our patients received assistance on the day it was requested. This meant that, from December 18th to March 9th, we responded to an additional 6,713 requests for medical assistance from our patients, above what we would normally expect, without the need to pre-book, call back the next day or to queue. All patients receive an initial call from a GP or Advanced Nurse Practitioner to discuss their problem, thus ensuring professional clinical input from the patient’s very first contact with the Practice.

The Gut Brain Superhighway Gut Focused hypnotherapy
O
ur brain and gut are intrinsically connected. We have ‘gut feelings’ about a person or event, and feel ‘butterflies’ in our stomach when something exciting happens. Neuroscientists have become increasingly aware that our gut may hold key insights into brain function. The gut has a ‘mini-brain’, a network of neurons called the enteric nervous system. The brain and enteric nervous system talk, and the shared communication line between the two is often called the gut-brain axis - “the gut-brain superhighway”. The gut communicates with the brain via hormones released into the bloodstream that cross the blood brain barrier, controlling our desire for food. For example, the gut hormone ghrelin tells us when we’re hungry, and other hormones such as glucagon-like peptide tell us when we’re full. The gut also makes neurotransmitters such as serotonin, the happy chemical which keeps us calm, help us cope, keep in control, and see things from a good perspective. If we are stressed or anxious, the production of serotonin slows down. In the gut, specialised cells lining the wall of the gut make and secrete serotonin where it plays an important role in controlling the wave-like contractions of the gut walls that squeeze food/ waste along the digestive tract. This action becomes irregular if we are stressed or anxious, contributing to the symptoms of IBS, and this in turn often increases the negative emotional states associated with the condition, creating an unhelpful cycle of emotional upset and physical discomfort. “How we think affects our gut” Bloating, constipation, cramps and diarrhoea are some of the physical symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). It can cause extensive anxiety, worry and embarrassment that can negatively
affect all aspects of a person’s life from their relationships, work, and social activities. IBS sufferers usually feel trapped, and have to plan their lives meticulously around the nearest toilet or exit. Gut bacteria are also important as they make the chemicals such as serotonin, dopamine and acetylcholine. Gut bacteria talk to the enteric nervous system and the brain; the presence of a good balance of bacteria helps balance chemicals and emotions. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can help Hypnotherapy can help break this cycle. PRACTITIONER PROFILE - Jake Somers BTEC Level 5 - Remedial sports massage therapist - Providing head-to-toe treatments for your recovery Why did you choose sports massage? I became interested in sports massage therapy following an injury I sustained falling off my mountain bike. I went over the handle bars, landing on the back of my head, and over stretched my neck and back. My whole body went into a state of protection; with painful widespread muscle spasms which locked up most of my neck, shoulders and upper back so I could hardly move. My brother suggested seeing a massage therapist and just two treatments later I felt fixed. I was really impressed by this and fascinated by his skill, knowledge and treatment techniques that, two weeks later, I enrolled! Where did you study and where do you work now? I began my studies at Peterborough Regional College, whilst juggling a full-time job as a boat builder during the day. I progressed through the
course levels before finishing my studies in London at “Essentials for Health School of Massage”, with a BTEC Level 5 qualification in Sports Injury and Recovery, (the highest), having had the privilege of working with some of the best teachers in the field. I currently work at the Wellhead Practice in Bourne and in the Empire Gym in Market Deeping. What type of patients do you see? I see a variety of patients, ranging from children to the elderly and from athletes to those requiring post-operative rehabilitation to improve their mobility. I treat the whole body from head to toe, covering a wide range of problems with joints and muscles caused by many things, ranging from actual sports injury to those related to poor posture. What do you enjoy about sports massage? The best part of my job is seeing the results of the therapy and how it affects people’s lives. There is nothing better than to be thanked for helping

Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust Bourne Area Group
T
he Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust, established over sixty years ago, is the prime organisation focused on conserving our county’s wildlife and wild places. The Trust now manages almost a hundred reserves, protecting and restoring those areas most special for wildlife, and providing access for people to enjoy them. The Trust has several volunteerled Area Groups across the county. The group centred on Bourne will celebrate its fiftieth anniversary next year. So, what does the group do? Over winter, we run a series of indoor talks, in the Bourne Methodist Hall, to which all are welcome (donation of £1.50 requested). During the summer, we have a series of field outings to reserves and other areas of interest. However, our key annual events are Open Days at two local reserves, Dole Wood and Deeping Lakes. Dole Wood is a fragment of ancient woodland with a carpet of bluebells in the spring; the open day this year is on Sunday April 15th , to coincide with the spring flowers, when there will be guided walks, activities for children, plant sales and home-made cakes and refreshments. The wood is a short walk off Obthorpe Lane, south of Thurlby. We will have similar activities at our Deeping Lakes open day on Sunday June 3rd. These former gravel pits host a range of wildlife, including wintering and breeding wildfowl, dragonflies and resident otters (which are seen frequently). But you don’t need to wait for an open day to visit the reserves; they are open all year for quiet enjoyment. Other reserves around Bourne include, along the river Glen, Baston Fen, Thurlby Fen Slipe and Willow Tree Fen, the latter an exciting project which has transformed a former arable farm into rich wetland. To the west, we have woodlands such as Lawn Wood and Meadows, and Tortoiseshell Wood, and a jewel of flower and butterfly-rich grassland at Robert’s Field, and more. The group is always looking for volunteers. Work parties doing practical conservation work meet on a Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. Ideal if you want to get your hands dirty, meet some new people and make a positive contribution to conservation. NEW CHARITY TAKES CONTROL OF BOURNE TOWN HALL Occupation of Bourne’s disused Georgian Town Hall has been officially handed over at a special ceremony to a new local charity, set up to restore it to its former glory. The event celebrated the formal signing of the documents that will pass the administration of the building to the charity, plus a ceremonial presentation of the keys by Lincolnshire County Council, the current custodians of the building. The event was attended by many supporters of the project and local dignitaries, including Martin Hill, (Leader of Lincolnshire County Council), Bourne’s Mayor, Paul Fellows, and David Brailsford, (Chair of Lincolnshire County Council’s Bourne Town Hall Management Committee). The magnificent building, constructed in 1821, has now been placed in control of the Bourne Town Hall Trust, which has been set up to fully renovate the building before sympathetically converting it into a Community Arts Centre for the town and surrounding villages. The
Trust now has to raise the funds to see the project through to completion, which will include reinstating the original clock tower, which was destroyed by a fire in 1933. Chairman of the Trust, Charles Houseago, said: “Today marks a major milestone in our project to restore the Town Hall and convert into an arts centre for the whole of the local community to use and enjoy again. Lincolnshire County Council has given us magnificent support so far in helping us to maintain the building while it was empty, and we are extremely grateful to them. We must also thank Bourne Town Council for their fantastic support over the past two years, and local solicitors, Double & Megson, who donated their time to help complete the legal undertakings.” The Trust is still on the lookout for enthusiastic volunteers who can help it raise the funds. Shoe Firm’s Amazing Feat! A Bourne family shoe business has scooped its eighth national accolade in just seven years – making it the most successful independent company since the industry’s ‘Oscars’ were launched. All of the cast worked with sheer professionalism and creativity to make the whole performance a huge team effort, highlighting the vast amount of talent at Bourne Academy. The Potting Shed As temperatures rise, (we hope), and days lengthen, there is plenty to do on the allotment or vegetable patch: sowing, weeding and planting. However, beware as there is always a threat of night frosts and it is better to be cautious than to take a risk, as precious time will be wasted: don’t forget to cover early sowings with fleece or cloches if frosts are forecast. Now is an ideal time to prepare seed beds; so that seeds have a good chance of germinating, the soil should be broken down into small even sized particles and stones and other debris removed. Rake over the soil when it is fairly dry to level it, so that dips and hollows are smoothed out to create a flat surface that will drain more evenly. Create a fine tilth by dragging the rake back and forth, forwards at a shallow angle and backwards at 90 degrees to create the small even particles. If you forgot to manure in the autumn, you can still add really well-rotted manure or compost, but dig it in thoroughly. When they have developed two or more true leaves, young seedlings that were planted in trays or modules need “pricking out” and putting into individual pots or larger modules. Lift them out carefully and always handle them by their leaves, not the stem. Keep an eye on them once they are in pots because, if it is too early to plant them out, they may become pot-bound – re-plant them in larger pots. Also, plants that have been raised indoors should be acclimatised by putting them outside during warmer days and bringing them in at night. Jobs to do this month include:• Earth-up early potatoes.
• Plant second early and main crop potatoes. • Last chance to plant onion sets. • The majority of root crops can be sown now and it is probably your last chance to sow parsnips. • Sow sweetcorn - an interesting way of germinating sweetcorn is by pre-chitting: - lay the seeds on a layer of damp kitchen paper then place a layer of paper over in an airtight box. Check daily and when a small white sprout appears, plant the seed about half to an inch deep in potting compost. • Plant asparagus crowns by the end of the month. • Sow the following outdoors but under cover; beetroot (if the soil is cold and wet), cucumbers, lettuces, turnips, oriental leaves and salad leaves. • Don’t forget to regularly hand weed or hoe around seedlings as the weeds appear, as they create a lot of competition for food and moisture. • Make sure that fruit trees, canes and bushes are kept watered, as any fruit planted in the last 18 months is susceptible to drought damage. Adding mulch around the base will help. • Sow maincrop peas and make the last sowing of summer broad beans. • Put up pea sticks and build cane supports ready for climbing beans while the ground is still soft. Income Protection is arguably one of the most important insurances, yet it is widely overlooked. It pays out a regular tax-free income, should you be unable to work due to accident or sickness. It is not the same as private medical insurance, which is designed to cover the cost of medical expenses.

Income protection is a complex product; it is rarely the case that the lowest premium is the most appropriate, therefore whilst there are online portals who will sell you these plans without advice, it must be better to consult with a professional adviser to ensure that the product recommended is suitable for your own individual circumstances - better still an Independent Financial Adviser who has access to virtually every contract available. Remember, your local bank or building society is only likely to be able to offer products from a single or restricted list of insurers.

So, the milder spring weather is finally making an appearance, the nights are pulling out, and your outdoor space could do with a little TLC. Whatever the job – big or small – don’t be tempted to give the work to someone who cold calls you at your home, claiming to be ‘carrying out similar work in the area’. Remember: • Don’t be talked into something on the spur of the moment. • Don’t take their word for it when they tell you urgent work or repairs need doing. • Do ask them to qualify who they are and to leave you a contact number. • Never hand over any cash as a deposit for work which they say they will return to carry out. • Feel free to ask to see their credentials and /or examples of their work. • Always ask them politely to leave if you feel uncomfortable with their approach. However, there are a few simple rules which could give away tell-tale signs of a rogue trader. • Do they have a land line number? • Do they have professional work wear? • Do they have a sign-written vehicle? • Are they a limited company? • Do they have a UK address? • Do they accept credit cards? • Are they offering reduced price for cash or having one- time ‘special offers’? • Are they trying to pushing you into a quick decision? The door-knocking scams of cowboy landscapers and other outdoor trades are becoming more and more common. Normally the process starts when a workman knocks on the door and points out a problem with your existing driveway. He will then tell you that he’s in the neighbourhood working on other customers’ driveways and has some left-over materials that means he could do your driveway for you at a reduced price. Once they have you agreed to a deal, the next step is to ask for cash up front to ‘ensure you’ll pay’. Never pay anyone cash at the door, especially when they haven’t even conducted any work on your premises. Most driveway scammers of this type won’t even have conducted a full inspection of your property and therefore probably have no genuine idea as to the exact costs involved or the length of time it’ll take. The only way to protect yourself from driveway and patio scams is to always ensure you use a reputable tradesman, like the members of Safe Local Trades. CHALLENGES OF DIVORCE By Richard Wood – Double & Megson Solictors
D
ivorce procedures have not changed much in forty-five years. Attitudes have, however, evolved as society has changed. When a couple get into difficulties, they should always consider going to Relate, the relationship counsellors. It also always helps to keep talking and to work out what might be done to save the marriage.
Sadly, there are times when either divorce or a separation agreement may be required. A separation agreement can regulate financial matters and children issues, but it does not end the marriage. In divorce, one party has to petition for divorce. There is a court fee, presently of £550. A reason for the divorce has to be stated, whether adultery, unreasonable behaviour, a two year separation by agreement, desertion, or a five year separation, (where the two year separation was not an option). The procedure takes between four and twelve months, depending on the facts. There is a separate procedure for finance and for children matters.
With financial settlements, a voluntary disclosure of documents (providing each party’s income sources, assets, liabilities and pension provision), is exchanged. It is often helpful to understand each party’s average monthly outgoings and mortgage borrowing capacity. Once the exchange of documents is completed, the parties can try to negotiate a settlement. If that is unsuccessful, they can go to court to ask the district judge to help them find a solution to their financial needs. Before that happens, the applying party must obtain a certificate from a Family Law Mediation Service to show that they have considered the alternative to court. Family lawyers are passionate about what they want to do to help. One campaign at this time is to try to bring about a “no fault” divorce, which would make quite a difference in managing some of the difficulties which all parties face.

To all intents and purposes, this looks like a regular billing e-mail from BT, albeit with an inflated figure (£336.76), designed to ‘alarm’ you into clicking on the billing link.
covered this subject just over a year ago, but it is worth reiterating given the fact that the scammers have upped their game, and the quality and appearance of these malicious emails has leapt up recently.
But let’s pause and have a closer look. If you put the cursor on the text See your bill here, you should see a web address shown on screen. (How this is shown will vary by the type of method you use to view your e-mail)… This link doesn’t take you to BT but to an unknown server in Slovakia (indicated by the .sk in the zbalsikufor.sk part of the address). Therefore, by clicking on this link, you will be connecting your device direct to that server where the criminals will take advantage of this to carry out any malicious action they intend. What makes this one even more convincing is that the other links in the e-mail will take you to BT pages. All four of the general links are to publicly accessible BT information pages, lending further credence to this being a genuine e-mail.
I don’t normally single out e-mail scams, but I will use this recent malicious e-mail to show how the quality of the scams has improved.

Various things can occur if you do click on that Slovakian link, the most common being the accessing of your system for the benefit of identity fraud, although often it will be to load code onto your system to further exploit security issues or spread viruses and malware. ourne Baptist Church has been an integral part of the town since the eighteenth century, seeking to be relevant to our community as seen in our strap line, “God within reaching out”. Our two ministers, David Hughes and Nick Humphreys, seek to lead the church through encouraging and equipping our congregation and those who visit us at any time. Our children and young people are ably led by our full-time youth/children’s worker, Leigh Smith.
This year, we are encouraging each other to read the bible more, as we believe it is the living word of God for our daily living, and our bible verse for the year is Psalm 119:105, as displayed on a banner inside the church. Our lively services which begin at 10.30am each Sunday, ending around 12noon, are led by the worship team, using guitars, drums, keyboard and vocalists. During this time, there are activities for children and young people. The morning ends with time to catch up over a cup of tea/coffee in the rear hall. We are a diverse group of people, from babies to people in their eighties. Our regular activities include: Mondays :
6.30pm - 7.45pm - Young people’s group, aged between 11-14.
Tuesdays :
9.30am – 11.30am - Toddle In for babies and toddlers with adult carers.

We have a number of Life Groups, held in people’s homes during the week The second Thursday of each month, from 10am- 12noon, we hold “Chill And Chat”, which is a time to talk, over refreshments. The second Saturday of each month, we run “Who let the dad’s out?” for dads and toddlers, from 10am – 12noon in the rear hall. We also have regular prayer meetings during the week. We hold one-off events from time to time, including “The Alpha Course” , children’s holiday clubs, the C.A.P money course, which offers help regarding budgeting. We seek to be a church which is part of the community. We also work with the Churches Together Group in our town. In the Hot Seat
IN THE HOT SEAT David and his wife, Rosie, came to this area in 2003 when he took the post of Pastor at Morton, Dyke and Haconby Baptist churches. After ten great years based in Morton, he left the churches to take up a new position as part-time pastoral support for Rural Ministries, an organisation that supports rural churches. As this was only part-time, David saw this as semi-retirement, but was then invited to become Senior Pastor (part-time) at Bourne Baptist Church. Now with two part-time jobs, David and Rosie have difficulty in understanding the definition of part time! David’s last service at Bourne Baptist Church will be on Sunday April 29th, when he retires from both part-time positions, after forty-five years of ministry, (although he expects there will still be opportunities to preach and minister yet to come). David and Rosie intend to stay in Bourne, as they enjoy the town and this part of the country with its rural surroundings, and have made so many friends here over the years.
Where were you born, and what is your favourite memory of your childhood? Although I was born in Kent, I was adopted and moved to Brighton at the age of five, where I grew up. One Bank Holiday, my parents who didn’t drive took me on a coach tour. While we were waiting for the coach to leave, I was amazed to see the Mods and Rockers chasing each other along the beach.

Who has had the greatest influence on your life and why? My parents, as they chose me and cared for me as if I was their own. I once asked them why they chose me, assuming that it was my good looks or friendly character! Apparently, the reason was that while all the children in the home were playing together, there was this pathetic child in the corner, looking rather miserable and they thought that if they a p ri l 2 0 1 8
didn’t take me, who would? The sympathy vote usually works! The real influence in my life though is God, who, just like my parents, accepts me as I am but loves me too much to leave me that way, and guides me daily. Which two characters, alive or not, would you most enjoy sharing a meal with and why? It would have been a real privilege to have met Billy Graham, (the famous American evangelist who died in February this year). I can remember when Neil Armstrong became the first person to walk on the moon in 1969. Together, I’m sure the three of us would have so much to talk about.
What advice would you give to a “sixteen-year-old you”? Come along to Bourne Baptist Church!

Thinking of Getting a Pet? Here’s Some Food for Thought
A
s spring and summer take hold, and as holidays are looming, many of us think about getting a new pet to join our households. Having a pet can be extremely rewarding and is known to have many health and social benefits. But, before rushing out to acquire your chosen animal, have you considered if you are the right owner for that pet? There are as many reasons for getting a pet as there are different homes for them, so it is important to make sure you are able to provide the home your pet deserves. Firstly, consider how much time you are able to dedicate to their care, as well as how regularly and for how long you are able to spare your time. Some animals, such as stick insects and spiders, only require short, infrequent periods of interaction, whilst others such as dogs would rather be with you for long periods of the day. It is lovely to get a new puppy during the holidays when you can settle them into the home, and it is much easier to toilet train when you are around most of the time. Going back to school and work can be very disruptive and many pups develop separation anxiety and possibly even destructive behaviours at this time. So, if you are out of your home for more than four hours a day, a different pet would be more suitable for your family.
Are you able to provide enough space and appropriate furniture for them, whether this is a cage or sharing your whole house? Many exotic pets have very precise housing requirements and their caging can be very expensive. Discussing their needs with those more expert at looking after these animals will be very informative. Look for your local herpetological or bird society for help. Not only must your pet’s environment provide it with food, water, warmth and bedding, it must also enable it to perform its normal behaviours or else its welfare and health will suffer. You will need to research their needs and check if you are able to provide for them. A small hutch housing a single rabbit does not lead to a happy, healthy life for that bunny! One significant consideration must also be the financial commitment you are undertaking when choosing a pet. As well as their regular ongoing requirements of food, housing, routine grooming, veterinary bills and pet sitting, infrequent or unexpected costs may occur, and you need to be in a position to deal with these too. Discovering . . . Sunday School treats

S
unday Schools were a vital part of community life in Bourne during the 19th and early 20th centuries, the inspiration of Robert Raikes (1735-1811), publisher and philanthropist, who was instrumental in founding one of the first at Gloucester in 1780 where the poorest children were taught the scriptures as well as reading and writing. The idea flourished with schools spreading with such astonishing rapidity that in 1785 the Sunday School Society was formed to co-ordinate and develop the work. A century later, they had become well established in Bourne with the Baptists in West Street being the first non-conformists to provide a Sunday School, classes beginning in 1803, and by 1924, some 5,000 children had attended. The Methodist Sunday School had 150 scholars and 21 teachers enrolled in 1888 with both morning and afternoon sessions while 11 neighbouring villages also had Methodist Sunday Schools. The appearance of Congregationalism in the town and the subsequent building of the Congregational Church [now the United Reformed Church] in Eastgate in 1846 brought an even greater impetus. A Sunday school was started in 1849 and for a long time its meetings were held in private houses yet by 1874 there were 235 children on the roll with 18 voluntary teachers and in 1900, a Sunday School building was opened adjoining

the chapel and designed much on the plan of the new Baptist Sunday School which had opened in 1891, with a central hall flanked by numerous classrooms and over 150 names on the register. The annual treat was always awaited with great anticipation, held as an enticement and a reward for children attending religious instruction on Sundays which by then was considered to be an integral part of their education. When the big day dawned, parents and children assembled at the church all dressed in their Sunday best, and then paraded through the town with banners flying, often accompanied by the town band and parents following on, including mothers with babies in their prams, to the Abbey Lawn or the Park Field in the Austerby. Here, the real business of the day got underway with sports and games, a fun fair and fancy dress competition, a parade of coloured floats and of course a sit down tea in a specially erected marquee followed by dancing for the parents and organisers in the evening once the children had been sent home to bed. It was a happy family occasion, highly anticipated every year, and an event which was talked about for weeks afterwards. “Sorry mate I didn’t see you” (“S.M.I.D.S.Y.”) - Saccadic Masking and How to Avoid it.

As we explored in February’s issue, saccadic masking affects us all. It is to do with the way that our eyes and brain see things as we turn our heads. When you move your head from side to side, often to look left and right at a junction, our eyes send images to our brain in snapshots. You can think of it like a camera, recording video footage in frames. Our brains then link all of these frames (called fixations) together to create one continuous image. However, this is an illusion because between the images there are blind spots (called saccades). How does Saccadic Masking affect my Driving? When you approach a hazard, a junction, or you are looking to turn left or right, your eyes do not capture one continuous image. The saccades created between fixations are a danger. Due to this phenomenon, we are effectively “blind” for up to an hour a day. Another road user could fall within these blind spots and not be seen. The faster you move your head, the shorter the fixations and the longer the saccades, therefore increasing the risk of not seeing another road user, causing “SMIDSY”. How can I prevent Saccadic Masking? Saccadic masking can be reduced if you avoid doing one continuous head movement from left to right. Instead, pause for a fraction of a second at three points. These points should be once to the left, once directly ahead, and once to the right, to check your long, middle and short distance. If you get into the habit of doing this, your eyes will adjust faster and you can complete the procedure quicker. This then stops the eyes from sending incomplete images to the brain. It is recommended that this is completed at least twice each
time you are looking to turn. If every driver carried this out, it could reduce the risk of road accidents by one quarter. It is something that we teach learner drivers at our intensive driving school and they have no problem whatsoever learning this technique. If learner drivers can learn this technique without any difficulty then it should be a breeze for experienced motorists, resulting in better and safer driving.

What are Scams?

cams come in many forms. It is essentially when uninvited contact is received by e-mail, letter, phone or in person, making false promises to con victims out of money. Fake lotteries, deceptive prize draws or sweepstakes, computer scams, call blocker and romance scams are some of the more popular ones seen in the Bourne area recently. It has been encouraging to see Marilyn Baldwin, (who runs the Think Jessica Campaign, which is named after her mum who was a victim of scams www.thinkjessica. com), succeed in her campaign to get Royal Mail to take a more responsible attitude towards scam mail, and start intercepting it before it reaches its destination address. Call blocker scams are becoming much more common. Once your details are known by one scammer, they can be shared and sold to other criminals who then contact you,
Scam Victims home full of unwanted products offering help to stop nuisance calls. You are persuaded to part with large amounts of money to get the calls blocked, perhaps by using a debit card. These details are stored by the scammer, who will make recharges on the account without you realising, until it’s too late. Yes, you do get sent something that looks like a call blocker, but it’s more likely than not to be just a useless empty box with a flashing LCD display! The larger phone companies seem to be taking notice now, and BT have introduced

“BT Call Protect”, whilst Talk Talk have “Call Safe”, both provided free of charge. So what can be done to help prevent scams occurring? National Trading Standards launched “Friends Against Scams” in 2016, and are hoping to recruit one million friends to help raise awareness of the problem. Bourne Volunteer Police Cadets and St John Ambulance cadets in Bourne have already become friends against scams, and an awareness session, open to the general public, is taking place on Monday April 16th, at 6.30pm at the Elsea Park Community Centre, Sandown Drive, Bourne.
