Introduction
Welcome to Your May Issue. This month, we look at one increasingly popular import from America – the School Prom. Let the skilled beauticians and hairdressers of our area make it a night to remember for you lucky young ladies. One of the highlights of my month will surely be the Royal Wedding on May 19th, when the gorgeous Ms Markle will provide us with another reason to love our American cousins. On page 19, you can read about how a Bourne lady is offering a Gift Box of afternoon tea, complete with lemon and elderflower cupcakes, resembling the wedding cake to be served to the guests at Windsor. And why not test your knowledge of royalty, with our special quiz on page 27? Finally, well done and thank you to our Mayor, Paul Fellows and his wife Judi, whose term of office comes to an end. Your monthly “rant” has been an inspiration!

Warners has long been a name associated with Bourne, and we focus on this successful firm this month. New businesses keep appearing, and Bev Wood’s venture into providing afternoon teas at your home is featured this month, along with motor vehicle accessories supplier, Zero Limits.

by Gemma Trippett High-school proms, as we recognise them now, originated in the US in the 1950s, although debutante balls in America were the norm in the 18th century. Proms began to occur in the UK around 15 years ago, and have become increasingly popular since. The high-school prom has now become a regular feature marking the end of the summer term in many British schools. While proms are generally for those leaving secondary school in the UK, primary school proms, and even proms for those leaving nursery are becoming more common! And it seems that each year, more and more elements crop up that add to the pressure of getting ready for the big night. Back when I was at secondary school, it was a simple formula which consisted of dress + hair + nails + shoes = perfect. Now, on top of those, there’s tanning, promposals, pre-prom parties … the list goes on! So you’ve done the hard bit … finding the dress. The next steps are a piece of cake, thanks to the local businesses, tips and advice we have around us…
At The Beauty Retreat we like to pamper our prom Queens! We offer make-up, lashes and gel polish. Using the latest shades our make-up artists Jessica and Jade are ready to help prepare for the big event. We offer a free consultation to establish exactly what you are looking for.
The Beauty Retreat Prom package; Make-up, strip lashes and gel file and polish all this for just £45! Gift vouchers are available for any amount or treatment.

Beating Belly Fat For Good
by Claire Saunders, Renu - Health, Beauty & Fitness
B
elly fat is one of the biggest complaints we have about our body shape. Even if you are happy with what the scales are telling you, it doesn’t always mean you are happy with your body shape. So, how can you beat belly fat for good? Play the fat-loss game, rather than the weight-loss game. There are two types of belly fat, one responds to exercise and the other responds to diet, so the best way to get a flat tummy involves a sensible exercise regime and a healthy diet. Inch loss is what matters, so try not to be focussed on the scales, and measure yourself instead.
There are good fats and bad fats. Low fat, low calorie combinations with long periods between meals are the perfect way to increase your belly fat. Hunger leads to low energy levels and this leaves you reaching for starchy, high sugar foods that will not fill you up, but will plant themselves firmly around your middle.
Big plates of pasta, potatoes or rice with your curry or casserole may be the perfect diet for an athlete about to do a long distance run, but if you are more likely to be sitting in an office or a car, they are going straight to your waistline. Reducing your alcohol intake will also drastically reduce the size of your beer/ wine/ vodka belly! The secret is to aim for a higher proportion of protein, such as chicken, fish and eggs, and fill your plate with lots of vegetables that grow above the ground. Eat regular meals and drink plenty of water. The right amount of healthy fats, such as olive oil, and even butter, can actually reduce belly fat. Exercise right. Short bursts of exercise, rather than long workouts, are essential to kick-start your metabolism and increase inch loss. Thirty minutes of this type of exercise, two or three times a week, is perfect. At Renu, our “speedy gym for busy women” promotes a thirty minute workout and sound nutritional advice that has had amazing inch-loss results for its members, with results that last. Manage your stress. Stress can cause a rise in cortisol – a hormone that, when mixed with a higher insulin level due to sugary, stodgy starchy food, can drastically reduce or impair the body’s ability to burn body fat. The best de-stressor is sleep, a good eight hours worth. Have a massage, or a hot bath, relax in a yoga class or with a good book. Learn to chill, and make an appointment with yourself to relax. If you would like to learn more about how to beat belly fat for good, Renu have a new programme that will provide three educational meetings, (giving detailed advice on why your body doesn’t release body fat), a shopping list and a three-week eating plan with recipes and food diary for £39.99. For more details, please call us on 01778 423923.

Stop Stress, Anxiety & Panic Attacks with Clinical Hypnotherapy
A
nxiety can build up over a long period of time without us even realising it, or it can come on suddenly as a result of something such as illness or a change of circumstances, for instance. Some people who have been fully in control of their lives suddenly find they can’t cope in their daily life. Anxiety and stress can manifest itself in many ways: nervousness; panic attacks; insomnia, overly worrying about something that may never happen. It can have a crippling effect by bringing on a range of symptoms such as depression, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), skin complaints or negative patterns such as over-eating, drinking, smoking etc. If allowed to go unaddressed, stress and anxiety can change lives for the worst. At least one person in ten experiences panic attacks which are often triggered by a stressful or anxious event. A panic attack happens when you experience a sudden onset of intense physical and psychological symptoms. Panic attacks can occur for no apparent reason or a set of circumstances can bring about an attack. You might experience an overwhelming sense of fear, dread, anxiety or apprehension. There are often physical symptoms accompanying these feelings, including a change in breathing pattern, sweating, nausea, heart palpitations, rapid heart rate, trembling, or even a difficulty swallowing. While they are frightening, it is unlikely they will cause physical harm, but the self-perpetuating thought of having one stops us from doing the things we want to do, or need to do, causing more stress and increasing the potential of having a panic attack. The good news is that Solution Focused Hypnotherapy has been shown to be a very effective treatment for panic attacks, reducing the frequency in a short period of time, or sustained treatment
will often result in them disappearing altogether. Hypnotherapy reduces underlying levels of anxiety, giving you greater control and reducing the emotional arousal. Hypnotherapy works with the subconscious brain templates, and makes suggestions in a beneficial and positive way, to make positive changes happen in the subconscious. Hypnotherapy allows guided relaxation, showing a preferred future and, because the subconscious part of the brain, (the part that’s in charge of our reactions), doesn’t understand the difference between imagination and reality, the guided relaxation starts to bring calm and control back into our lives. You will learn how to prevent negative stress, how to identify increased levels of stress, and how to deal with the situation and how to prevent it reaching debilitating levels in a positive and responsible way. Whatever the cause of stress, anxiety or panic attacks, the treatment is tailored to the individual. “Regain your health, wealth and wellbeing”

Sleep Well
by Caroline Mentzel, Behaviour management consultant, helpucope ltd
S
leep is a good healer. It allows the body to repair itself, and the brain to organise the memory, creating order from the chaos of continuous input. Many people suffer from difficulties related to sleep. It helps if you can prepare yourself. Go to bed at a regular time and set your alarm for the same time every day, to develop a regular sleep-wake rhythm. Try not to become over-tired. The sleep-inducing hormone, melatonin, peaks at around 11pm, so this is when we naturally feel tired. Mental Blocks Don’t assume you are going to have a bad night or trouble sleeping. This will interfere with your ability to unwind, relax and respond to sleep triggers. Always think positively of sleep as something you find pleasurable and easy to accomplish. You may find it helpful to say the following mantra silently to yourself as you close your eyes, and set your mental alarm clock. ‘I am drifting into a deep, relaxing sleep and waking up at ? o’clock feeling rested and refreshed’. If you wake up during the night, repeat the mantra to help you drift back to sleep. Sleep Preparation A warm, fragrant bath at bedtime encourages sleepiness. Keep your bedroom clean and tidy, as it is
difficult to sleep in a cluttered environment, and make sure the room is dark. Try to avoid using your bedroom as a study, computer room, sewing room, or share it with your pets. It should be your sanctuary and the atmosphere should be one of tranquillity. For comfort, check your mattress to ensure that your heels, back of the head and buttocks sink just below the surface. Your neck, backs of knees and hollow of the back should rest on the surface. Also be aware that it is difficult to get to sleep with cold feet. ● Design yourself a suitable bedtime routine. Begin your routine an hour before bedtime and include a form of relaxation that you find effective, such as reading, meditation or bathing. ● Never take stress or anxiety to bed with you. Settle any arguments. ● Avoid drinking coffee, tea or hot chocolate before bed, as they all contain caffeine. ● Set your alarm for the same time every day. ● Use fragrance – in the bath, in the bedroom, on the pillow, on your night clothes. ● Address possible disturbances, for example your dog sharing your bed, or your teenager playing loud music late at night. ● Avoid exercising immediately before going to bed. ● A milky drink or a small bedtime snack containing starch can help induce relaxation. A small bowl of cereal releases nutrients slowly through the night. ● Eat your last meal before 7.00pm and nothing within an hour of going to bed. New Clinic Keeps Shoe Firm One Step Ahead
A
n award-winning Bourne shoe shop is staying one step ahead of its rivals by launching a unique foot clinic service. North Shoes will open the clinic at their North Street store on May 8th, and it will be run by store manager Ryan Clements, a newly-qualified foot health practitioner. Ryan, 29, gained his qualification as a foot health practitioner through the Maidenhead-based, SMAE Institute, and tutors there told him they knew of no other shoe store offering such a service. He is also a Member of the Open College of Foot Health Professionals (MCFHP), and a Member of the British Association of Foot Health Practitioners (MAFHP). He said: “North Shoes have won a string of Footwear Industry Awards accolades, and we take pride in our customer service. We’ve taken it up another notch with the opening of the foot health clinic in a purpose-built, private, room at the back of our Bourne shop. The clinic is an innovative idea. Feet problems are related to footwear. A lot of people’s feet issues are down to illfitting footwear and not having the knowledge of how footwear can affect their feet.”
treatment and advise people on the correct footwear for them as part of the full package. There is a charge of £30 for all treatments. “A lot of people ignore problems like corns, verrucas, ingrowing toenails and calluses because they can’t get in to see their health care services straightaway. The clinic will be able to help them, and I also have a broad knowledge of the high risk foot. I work to promote healthy feet. It’s important you look after your feet and, for a lot of problems you don’t have to see a GP to resolve them.” Ryan is aiming to broaden the service even further, by taking a course in bio-mechanics, enabling him to advise on people’s gait and how their feet and legs work. He says: “This would enable us to identify and correct other leg problems with orthotics.” Ryan demonstrated his faith in his own feet when he tackled the London Marathon on Sunday April 22nd. He was aiming to complete it in four hours and 15 minutes and raise £2,000 for Oxfam.
Ryan, the Society of Shoe Fitters National Student of the Year in 2016, added: “We will be able to sort out feet problems with

Professional Ear Care and Safe Syringing by Jane Russell RGN BSc(Hons) INP
Y
our ears are just as important as your eyes and teeth. Whilst most people will visit an optician and a dentist at least once a year and sometimes more for a check-up, the ears tend to be neglected.
Good hearing and healthy ears play an important part in your quality of life. If you have ever experienced reduced, or even lost your hearing for a short period of time, then you’ll know just how frustrating and lonely it can be. For some people, this could make them feel very vulnerable, especially if they live alone. If you feel you have a problem with your ears, don’t just ignore it. There are many conditions that can affect your hearing, such as ear infections or ear wax build up. Some are very straightforward to fix and generally, as with so many other things in life, the sooner you have them checked, the sooner you can get back to normal. Ear wax is completely normal; it is produced by the ear to provide protection. Ears are actually self-cleaning and you should never attempt to remove the wax yourself. Although it can be tempting, using items such as cotton buds can actually push the wax further down the ear canal and end up totally blocking your ear. The cotton wool tip can even damage your ear canal..... as can matches, hair grips and twigs! To help reduce the chances of problems with your ears, you should always try and keep them dry and protected from water. Using an ear plug when you go swimming or even showering is advisable. Wet ears can cause eczema, dermatitis, runny ears and infections. You could use cotton wool as a plug BUT ONLY if you smear it with Vaseline to ensure you do not damage the ear canal with the fibres. If you have an ear problem, it is recommended that you see a trained, competent practitioner in ear care. They have specialist equipment that allows them to see into your ear canal with the correct lighting, and are able to provide the correct and safe treatment. For ear wax, ear syringing / irrigation, when performed by qualified practitioners, is safe and effective. Please do not try internet “do it yourself ear syringing kits”.
Ear clinic now available Thursday and Friday
Effective treatment does not necessarily mean expensive treatment. At the Wellhead Practice, Jane Russell offers patients an initial assessment for £10. Your ears will be examined, and you’ll be given recommendations, ranging from general advice to suggested treatment. Ear syringing starts at £30.
been caring for ears ever since. Amongst many nursing roles in her career, until a year ago, Jane was part of the NHS Intermediate Care Team in Bourne as a community Matron. From January this year, she has been running an ‘ear care’ clinic on a Thursday and Friday at The Wellhead Practice where she has been busy providing ear care advice and ear syringing treatments.

It is home to the ‘Big Five’ of African wildlife, (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhinoceros), along with herds of plains game and brightly coloured birds. Head to the coast for bountiful marine life, including playful penguins on pretty Boulders Beach in Cape Town and giant humpback whales, bottlenose dolphins and seals off the coast from the seaside town of Hermanus. Sri Lanka Packed full of mesmerising sights, wonderful wildlife and palm-fringed beaches, Sri Lanka promises to deliver a truly unforgettable travel experience for animal lovers!
The Serengeti is undoubtedly the most famous wildlife sanctuary anywhere in the world. In its fabulous jungle setting, the world-famous Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre cares for orphaned, abandoned and abused orangutans so that they can return to their natural habitat. Ubud on Bali Whilst you’d be forgiven for never leaving your sun lounger during a holiday in blissful Bali, head inland and you’ll soon discover that there’s much more to this idyllic island than its glorious coastline.
The Udawalawe National Park is one of the best places to spot the famous Sri Lankan elephant, whilst Yala National Park is home to sloth bears, elephants, monkeys, crocodiles and leopards. What’s more, Bundala National Park is where you’ll be able to spy flocks of flamingos, herons and storks. Tanzania From the dramatic volcanic landscape of the Ngorongoro Crater to the fascinating Olduvai Gorge, this incredible country is home to nearly every species of African animal imaginable!

Bev Wood – Afternoon Tea at Your Service! Bev is now offering a complete afternoon tea service, at a venue to suit the customer, be it at their home, in their garden or wherever the function is to be held. Bev will prepare all the delicious ingredients that comprise the traditional afternoon tea, including sandwiches, scones, cakes and beverages, along with cutlery and crockery. Her garage has been converted into a catering kitchen, meaning that all the necessary regulatory standards are able to be achieved.
Local lady, Bev Wood, will be familiar to many as the former Manager of the Norwich and Peterborough Building Society in Bourne’s Market Place. The closure of the branch in December provided the longed-for opportunity for Bev to re-ignite her passion for baking and her love of cakes! Upon leaving school, Bev trained at a catering college and spent many years in the hospitality sector, before embarking on a successful banking career. She had always maintained a keen interest in baking and entertaining guests, so it was as a result of Bev receiving so much praise from her guests, after having provided a superb afternoon tea party for her father’s eightieth birthday, that the seeds for her new business were sown.
Tapping into the expected interest surrounding the royal wedding on May 19th, Bev is offering a “Gift Box” service... sit back and enjoy the day with your own afternoon tea, including a scrumptiously sounding lemon and elderflower cupcake, just like Prince Harry and Meghan’s wedding cake!
Your next event catered for! Order a bespoke afternoon tea for your next event. My food is home baked and delivered to you. I can cater for Parties, Birthdays, Anniversaries, Baby Showers, Christenings, Stag & Hen Wedding Receptions, Funerals, Work Celebrations, Lunches, Meetings, Seasonal Events, just about any reason you would like to think of! The Five Bells at Edenham Relax with Fine Food and Drink after that Long Walk! Leaving the winter behind, thoughts for many of us now turn to getting out into the countryside for that long walk or cycle ride and, as summer arrives, that opportunity to sit out on a sunny day in a pub garden and make the most of our (occasionally!) fabulous summer weather. That is where The Five Bells public house and restaurant in Edenham really comes into its own, providing the perfect stopping-off point after a ramble, or perhaps a cycle ride, in the beautiful countryside to the west of Bourne, and a substantial beer garden in which you can enjoy the fine food and drinks on offer in a delightful location. Partners, Alyson Hudson and Pete Birch, welcome guests, (including dogs!) with an easy, relaxed manner, and you are soon made to feel comfortable in their company. Pete has been in the licensed trade since 1975, having run both The Gainsborough Lady and The Bertie Arms in Uffington, near Stamford, and this is their eighth year in Edenham.

the use of fresh local produce. Meats are supplied by Alec Day of Bourne and The Peterborough Game Company, whilst the fish arrives fresh, courtesy of M & J Seafood of Grimsby. The meals are executed to an exceptionally high standard and the array of very favourable comments on Trip Advisor speaks volumes. The discerning drinker will be pleased to encounter a broad selection of draught lagers, ciders and real ales, with variety very much in evidence. Horncastle Brewery and Greene King ales sit alongside Krombacher and Brava Czech lagers, for example, whilst the wines available are supplied by Amps of Oundle, in itself almost a guarantee of quality and consistency. The Five Bells offers an intimate dining experience, especially in the evenings, making it perfect for a treat or for that special occasion. There is also a function room with a capacity of eighty guests, making this beautifully maintained and tastefully decorated country pub an even more attractive proposition for special events and celebrations.

Mayor
Words from the Mayor Councillor Paul Fellows
As Ronnie Barker would have said, ‘And it’s goodnight from him!’ Or, to be more precise, it’s time to hand over the Mayor’s chain of office and, in all honesty, I don’t want to do it! Judi and I have had such an amazing, and informative, year as Mayor and Mayoress. Since the year began, we have represented Bourne throughout the county at civic services and dinners; we’ve been to flag raisings; watched young people performing; got a ride on the dodgems at Stamford fair; and toured breweries. It was tough … but someone had to do it! Our most important engagements were, without doubt, the ones we did in Bourne itself. We met a huge number of amazing people who give up time to support and work with other members of our truly caring community, and it was an honour to be invited to meet them. I have done work experience placements at various places in Bourne and, without a doubt, I found the initiative to be more than worth it. I found out, through a practical experience, a little of what happens in our town and how people earn their living. Our town has a wide range of companies, providing employment as well as the services that keep them functioning, so a big thank you to all who welcomed and ‘put up’ with me.
Bourne is a market town on a crossroads of a major route and it has always been so. It has had to adapt down the centuries for a huge number of reasons, and I have no doubt that it will continue to do just that, adapt. It has grown and will grow more, but when Judi and I visited other towns up and down the county, it became obvious how well Bourne compares with them. There is an argument that Bourne is South Lincolnshire’s best-kept secret and long may it remain so. What makes it so great is the people who live here. The two charities that we have raised some money for, the Town Hall Project and Dimension Skate Park, are both moving forwards positively and both are much needed facilities that will come to fruition, and be assets to Bourne for many years to come. The last event we are planning is The Mayoress’s Royal Wedding Tea Party which we have conveniently squeezed in between the Royal Wedding and the F.A. Cup Final! It will be at the Darby and Joan Hall,

beginning at 2.00pm and ending at 4.30pm, just in time for the football. Tickets, in advance, are £5 and available from Bourne Town Council Office and Crown Jewellers. Please feel free to wear a wedding hat!! Finally, we want to wish David and Christine Mapp, the new Mayor and Mayoress, good luck for the coming year; and thank everyone, especially our Town Clerk, Ian Sismey, for all the support you have given us this year. may 2018

Peace of mind for you and your family Clare Megson has established a new business in Bourne to give local residents the opportunity of accessing the support of a will writer and a later life planning advisor. Clare previously practised as a solicitor before leaving private practice to set up Megson, a niche firm, specialising in will writing, powers of attorney, Court of Protection, trusts and probate advice. Will writing and later life planning are areas that can be riddled with companies offering poor advice, and practitioners who have little knowledge or experience. Therefore, it is important to ensure that you are getting advice from someone who is experienced and qualified. Clare will visit you in your home at a time convenient to you, offering friendly guidance and advice in plain English, with set quoted fees.
For further information, or to make an appointment, please contact Clare Megson on 01778 230011 or email: clare@megson.uk.com

When famous crime writer Jack Cameron and his wife Susie drown in a boating accident, they are refused entry into heaven – Jack is a cardcarrying atheist – so they return to haunt the country cottage where they lived. Life is dull. Their only pleasure comes from spooking the estate agent and frightening away any wouldbe tenants. Things change when Susie persuades Jack to allow a young couple, Simon – an aspiring crime writer – and his wife Flic, to move in. Inevitably, Susie and Jack become drawn into their lives and whilst Simon has writer’s block, Marcia, Flic’s monstrous mother, is doing her best to separate them.

Spotlight on … The Oddfellows The Oddfellows Society is one of the oldest friendly societies in the country, founded in 1810, and now with over 310,000 members nationally. But how come the “odd” name? Back in 1810, skilled workers were called ‘fellows’ and were often part of a trade guild. In some smaller towns and villages, there weren’t enough of a particular trade to form a specialist guild, so the “odd” fellows formed their own trade guild. They would meet regularly and put a little money each time into a pot. If one of them was sick and couldn’t earn wages, money would come out of the pot to help him. The ethos of the society today is still the same with many other benefits to meet our modern needs. Back in the early 1900s, there was an Oddfellows lodge in Bourne, which used to meet at the Nags Head, but today the nearest lodge serving our area meets at 57 Church Street, Market Deeping. We are now known as the Nene and Welland District Branch, and cover Bourne, Deeping, Stamford, Spalding and Peterborough. We believe in friendship and fellowship and hold many social events throughout the year to meet our aims. Along with this, we also use our events to raise money for charitable causes. Our first main fund raising event for this year will be a traditional Tea Dance, at the Abbey Church Hall, Bourne on Sunday May 6th at 2.00pm. We also have regular lunch clubs, coffee mornings, craft club, outings, demonstrations and quiz nights, in various places across our area. Gardening
The Potting Shed Spring so far has seen a variety of weather, from warm sunny days to late snow, cold winds and frost. Let’s hope that May brings us sunshine and warm days: don’t get too complacent though, as May has a habit of throwing a variety of adverse weather conditions at the gardener, and you may have to protect young seedlings from the possibility of a late frost, or make sure they are well watered if we don’t have the rain. Also, hold back on planting out seeds at the beginning of the month, as sometimes they are planted too early: the ground may be too wet or cold and they fail to germinate. Whatever the weather, it does seem to favour the weeds!! So make sure these are kept in check as they take precious nutrients away from young plants and seedlings. When watering young plants and seedlings, it is better to water less frequently but more thoroughly as this gets down to the roots. If you water lightly, it may only wet the surface of the soil and the roots may be encouraged to stay near the surface, where they are more likely to suffer from drought damage. Seeds to sow out this month are too numerous for me to list, but a few include: carrots, beetroot, French beans, lettuce, spring onions, salad leaves and peas. Succession sowing ensures that you have a continual supply and not a glut of the same crop, and is particularly good for salad crops which you need to cut and use immediately. Any seeds that were sown earlier will need thinning out: doing this when they are quite small lessens the disturbance to the surrounding plants. Indoors, you can sow chillies, courgettes and squashes,
runner beans, sweetcorn, aubergines and cabbages and, towards the end of the month when the risk of frost has gone, they can be planted outdoors. Some of us only set aside a small plot for growing fruit and vegetables, so to maximise your space you can try:• Intercropping – sowing two crops in the same row, one slow and one fast growing. Fast growing crops include Oriental salad leaves, lettuces, radishes, spring onions, spinach and spring-planted shallots. Slow growers are parsnips, sweetcorn, tomatoes, leeks, winter cabbage, cauliflower, sprouting broccoli and Brussels sprouts. You can also sow the fast growers when there is a gap between harvesting one crop and planting another • Catch Cropping – sowing a fast growing crop in the brief period a plot might be empty. Other jobs to do this month include:• Earth up potatoes. • Cover carrots with netting to stop carrot fly damage. • Harden off and plant out vegetables sown earlier. • Pot on growing plants. • Put up bean and pea supports. • Pick flowers off new strawberries to prevent them cropping in their first year. Let’s hope for some good weather for growing and planting: enjoy!

The Month of May - Lots to Celebrate, Thanks to Newton Fallowell by Philip Bell, Senior Valuer, Newton Fallowell
I
t’s a double win this month, two Bank Holiday weekends! That’s two barbecues, two house parties or two long weekends away in the South of France. It is also a great opportunity to have us, Bourne’s award-winning estate agent, bring buyers round to view your home. This time of year is always buzzing, the gardens are blooming and the housing market is entering its busiest time. This means we can offer fast, secure deals to our vendors and help buyers find their new home, ready for summer. But wait - other than a fantastic market, what else do I need to think about when planning for the month of May? Well, we’ve taken a look through for some key
moments that we can all enjoy at some point during this month. National Doughnut Week stands out for me, as does World Fair Trade Day, so combine those two for an easy win. Remember to say thanks to any fire fighters you know, as their patron saint, St. Florian, has his day this month. To counter those doughnuts earlier in the month, Walk to School Week also kicks off, so take the time to enjoy a morning stroll. There are many others, so get out there and see what takes your fancy. When you’re ready to sell, make sure you use us, and we’ll make your dreams of a new home, reality. We look forward to helping you move.

Warners
- An Independent, Family-run and Family-friendly Firm There’s a fascinating little book called “Born with the Century”, written by Anne Frazer Simpson, which outlines the life of one Lorenzo Warner, born in 1901, and who, in 1926, established a small newsagency in Bourne. Over the following decades, “Lorry” steered his expanding business onwards and, through his son, Michael, and then, through his grandsons, Philip and Stephen, this small concern would develop into two thriving businesses, Warners (Midlands) plc and Warners Group Publications. It was a most illuminating visit I was able to spend recently, when meeting up with one of the fourth generation of the Warner dynasty, Marketing Manager for Midlands, Michael Warner, on the premises of the firm in West Street, Bourne. Now occupying the site of what was once shared between St Peter’s Hospital, Boston Tractors and the Maltings, this present location is close to the former shop on West
➥
Street, (still exhibiting the name Warners in the mosaic tiles of its entrance), with its small printing department at the rear of the premises. Family-friendly Amongst a multitude of interesting statistics and anecdotes, the book, (appropriately enough, printed and published by Warners (Midlands) plc in 1988), brings the reader up to date with the observation that “many of the 156 staff have been with the company for over twenty-five years - a few for as long as forty.” This pattern has remained firmly in place over the intervening thirty years, with Michael assuring me that, whilst the present-day number of employees has risen to 240, (including part-time staff), the proportion of them with at least twenty-five years of service will have increased considerably. “Once a Warners’ worker, always a Warners’ worker” would appear to be the motto, with staff turnover very low. I was made aware of how one of its many perceived strengths is this feeling of inclusiveness, the “big family” idea with successive generations of Bourne families filling the ranks, and expecting the pattern to remain into the future. “We’re big enough to compete on a national stage,” commented Michael, “yet small enough to remain family-focused. We’re obviously doing something right.” Two businesses – one site In terms of what that “something” involves, suffice to say that the operation comprises two arms, Warners Midlands plc and Warners Group Publications, separate, yet closely linked and located on the same site. Their mightily impressive websites provide almost everything there is to know about Warners. They bristle with video extracts, blogs, technical data fully explained to potential clients, and an up-todate news section, (featuring the latest batch of “twenty-five years and still going strong” employees!) Warners Midlands plc specialises in high-quality magazine, brochure and catalogue printing, focusing on the short to medium run market, with print runs of anywhere from 1,000 up to
500,000. A fully-equipped plant offers customers access to state-of-the-art printing and mailing equipment. It can handle just about every aspect of the magazine and brochure printing process, from design, through to mailing and dispatch. Established in 1988, Warners Group Publications plc is a magazine publisher producing over thirty titles, and offering a full range of publishing services to a large variety of clients. They deal with small, individual publishers through to large international trade associations, and can help them get their publications through all the stages of production, from creation to distribution. They also specialise in magazine distribution and marketing into national and international consumer markets, whilst exhibitions and subscription services are yet another string to Group Publications very successful bow. Care for the community Being such an integral part of Bourne’s community, it is no surprise to hear of the wonderful contributions made by Warners Midlands to local charities and good causes. In recent years, large sums have gone to The Butterfield Centre, The Willoughby School, Anna’s Hope, and some of the funding for the refurbished Well Head play area. Local youngsters, Ben and Sam Rogers, suffering from Duchenne muscular
➥
dystrophy, have benefitted from Midlands fundraising efforts in the past, whilst St. Barnabas Lincolnshire Hospice Care has been chosen by Midlands staff to be this year’s charity. Michael Warner is keen to have his family’s business visited by the public, and has already welcomed many groups around the factory. “We like to see it as a resource”, he declares. If, like me, you have often wondered what a state-of-theart printing facility looks like, or if you just want to see how far things have progressed since the old days of “Lorry” Warner and his paper shop on West Street, then just get in touch with them. Who knows, you may still be there in twenty-five years’ time!

Accounting, Kirigami and a Sing-Song!
O
n Tuesday April 17th, we had a most enjoyable Bourne in Business meeting, where a number of new members was welcomed.
Mark Wrigley from GreenStones Accountants gave a presentation about the importance of having a plan for your business, and a coach to be held accountable for your plan. The main point of his presentation is as follows: Business owners pay lots of money to their accountants to produce a set of accounts every year. You cannot run your business on those accounts though; they are designed for the benefit of HM Revenue and Customs and other authorities. Accounts are complicated and often use outof-date numbers, so they are often lagging indicators of business performance. Successful business owners look for leading indicators, such as new customer leads or investment in training or customer happiness. How useful would it be to measure and score these key performance indicators in a systematic manner on one piece of paper and then review them on a monthly basis? The “one page plan” is that system and, with your chosen business coach, you can really drive your business to its vision. The coach is to provide an independent view on performance and possible actions, then to hold the business owner to account on completing those actions. Mark Wrigley, FCCA, GreenStones Limited, Bourne Office – 58 North Street, Bourne, Lincolnshire, PE10 9AB Phone: 01778 423777 Website: www.greenstones.co.uk Ricky Locke, our local magician and hypnotist, then thrilled our members by demonstrating the art of kirigami and mind-reading! He read Colin’s mind and accurately cut out a silhouette of Bruce Lee! To find out more about what Ricky does, visit www.rickylocke.co.uk for more information. We then had a great sing along with leaders, Linda Gunthorp, Kenny Ring and several other members of The Tuneless Choir. For more information, call Linda Gunthorp on 07949 057811. Join us for our next meeting on Tuesday May 15th, at 6.00pm at The Angel Hotel in Bourne.

Legal Corner
Face-to-Face Advice is Still Important and Available Today! By Richard Wood – Double & Megson Solictors
In this world of ever-increasing technology, the vast majority of us like to use the internet, and this has its value. However, there are very good reasons why we should still visit and use our local services. From a legal perspective, having face-to-face contact with your legal adviser ensures that all matters are thoroughly discussed, and provides an on-going point of contact for any continuing enquiries. When purchasing property, it is essential that the buyers are able to have particular matters explained to them, as many points need to be covered, and things could be misunderstood. Key distinctions have to be made, to ensure procedures are carried out correctly, and these can be more effectively clarified in a face-to-face situation: • Where the buyers are a couple, they need to decide if they wish to hold the property on the basis that they are “joint tenants” or “tenants in common”. • Under the former, if one of them dies, the survivor will
automatically take the deceased person’s share. Whilst that might be what most people think is going to happen, in more complicated family arrangements they may want to hold their property as “tenants in common”, which enables them to provide, in a will or other deed, something different. This could be important in situations where there has been a substantial difference in levels of contributions. It is essential that the buyer or seller and their adviser understand what rights and liabilities exist, and which area of land is to be transferred to another in order to avoid any ambiguity. Any confusion can lead to disputes. In other matters, consulting with your local solicitors has the advantage in that they are familiar with the surrounding community and issues arising within it.

Test the Health of your Hard Drive or SSD

robably the most common cause of data loss I see is the lack of data backup, coupled with failure of the storage drive, either hard disk or SSD. I’ve covered backups a few times in the past, but it is also worth checking the health of your system disk proactively, every now and then.
card slot which is empty, (no media).
Windows does provide some basic test capabilities, but they are not very effective and not the easiest to use. Fortunately, there are a few free and paid-for alternatives; one of the free ones that I can recommend is HDDScan.
You will now see a summary of the health data held on the disk for that drive.
HDDScan is a freeware software for hard drive diagnostics, (Flash USB and SSD drives are also supported). The program can test storage device for errors and can show the inbuilt S.M.A.R.T. disk health data where supported by the drive. The current version of HDDscan is v4.0 and it can be downloaded from http://hddscan.com/ Once downloaded, it will be delivered as a ZIP file so you will have to extract it, (right click on the file and click on Extract). Once it has been extracted, double click the HDDSCan.exe file to run and install the tool.
The quickest and most basic check is to query the SMART data that is held on the disk drive itself. Click on SMART.
What you want to see here is all green buttons, no amber or red which may indicate degradation and potential failure. For more in depth testing, you can use the TESTS button. CAUTION! The ERASE option does what it states and will ERASE all the data on the drive. Do not use this unless this is what you intend.
The final button is Tools which provides a handful of disk related tools. There are some tools included here that you should only use if you know what you are doing, so I’d keep out unless you are technically savvy. You can now run HDDSCan to test your drive. Click on the drop down arrow to select your disk drive, (in the example I have a hard drive), and SSD and an SD IT ITSupport Supportand andTraining for Home Training forComputer Home Users and Small Computer Users and SmallBusinesses Businesses 01476 550604 01778 590632 07894 07894659479 659479 www.litespc.co.uk www.litespc.co.uk info@litespc.co.uk info@litespc.co.uk 48

An additional benefit of HDDScan is that it will run standalone off a USB drive. This means that if you can’t boot to Windows desktop, then you can still use the tool to test your disk drive.

Resurrecting the “Pension v ISA Debate” by Paul Ross, Financial Planner at Landmark IFA Ltd

free money, so worth checking – you can even qualify if your partner has passed away.
f the last budget announcement is anything to go by, it would seem the Osborne push for an ISA-centric world has met its maker under Phillip Hammond. With no hint of an introduction to the Workplace ISA or inflation-based increase for the ISA allowance, the minimal changes that Hammond did announce on pensions have somewhat revived the dispute of pensions over ISAs. The simple fact is that pensions and ISAs should not be seen as in direct competition for retirement saving, but instead as complementary to each other. There are few people fortunate enough to be able to fully utilise the £40,000 pension annual allowance and £20,000 ISA allowance, and for most to put all their savings into just one or the other could be unwise. Tax-relief on contributions, tax-free growth, the flexibility to access income from the age of fifty-five, (with up to 25% paid out tax-free), and in addition the ability to pass on your pension fund on death in a taxeffective manner, have combined to make pensions more attractive than ever. The ISA, though not benefiting from tax-relief on contributions, does allow tax-free growth and tax-free access at any time. Something to consider though, is that it does form part of the

individual’s estate for inheritance tax and, when combined with the value of other assets, cannot be ignored. In retirement, taking a combination of income from both pension and an ISA can not only save tax, but can preserve savings, enabling you to maintain your standard of living longer, or pass wealth to the next generation. So I say long live the continuation of benefits for both pensions and ISAs! Are You Missing out on £900 Free Money? Are you married or in a civil partnership? If so, you may be entitled to a £900 tax break called the marriage tax allowance. Over one million couples are missing out. It’s
The marriage tax allowance started on April 6th, 2015, and in year one was worth £212. For the following tax year, starting in April 2016, it was worth £220 and the year after - beginning April 2017 - it was worth £230. For this tax year – beginning April 2018 – it’s worth £238. Plus claim it now and it’s backdated, so many get previous years’ AND this year’s allowance – £900. To do it, you’ll need both of your National Insurance numbers, and one of a range of different acceptable forms of ID for the non-taxpayer. The HMRC website is https:// www.gov.uk/marriage-allowance ; alternatively, you can do it by phone on 0300 200 3300. Bear in mind, you can only claim for the years you both met the criteria and it’s the non-taxpayer who needs to apply.

Pets and Vets
“Mind the Gap” - How to Avoid Dog Breath!
A
gap between your front teeth may be aesthetically pleasing in models, but for our pets it doesn’t quite hold true. A gap-filled smile from a pet indicates previous dental problems which caused gum disease and unsociable, doggy, bad breath. Periodontal disease, which affects the gums, supporting ligaments and underlying bone, is exceptionally common, with 87% of all pets over the age of three suffering from this complaint. The normal mouth of dogs and cats has 750 million bacteria per millilitre of saliva. Natural defence mechanisms such as salivation and chewing will help keep the bacterial population under control. Problems arise when teeth become overcrowded, misaligned, fractured or affected by poor diet. Any one of these factors may tip the balance in favour of periodontal disease. In its simplest form, it begins with plaque, a mixture of saliva and bacteria which is difficult to rinse off with water, and needs to be removed by mechanical means, such as brushing. Once the plaque gains a foothold, it becomes mineralised and hardened to form calculus or tartar. Even the tiniest layer of calculus can establish a rough surface which will predispose the teeth to retain even more plaque. Pretty soon, your pet’s teeth will be covered with a layer of hard material, the underlying gums will eventually become inflamed and bleed easily
when touched. This state is commonly referred to as gingivitis. Fortunately, if you remove the plaque through professional scaling at this time, gingivitis can be completely reversed. Left untreated though, the gingivitis will lead to the dreaded periodontitis. Periodontitis causes permanent damage to the gums and teeth, causing tooth loss. Worse still, the disease can affect other body organs. Every time your pet chews food, their mouth will release millions of bacteria which will be transported into the blood stream to other parts of the body, such as the liver and heart, and infections can occur. So how do you detect impending dental problems? If your pet allows, have a quick look under the lip to the very back of the mouth. Located in the upper jaw is a very large molar tooth called the carnassial. This tooth is important to identify as it is likely to get plaque as it is close to the salivary duct. Monitor this tooth for discolouration and any evidence of gum reddening. Once you have found early dental disease, take your pet to your vet for a thorough scale and polish under general anaesthesia. Tooth brushing at home will not remove tartar, only plaque. The vet will scale off the tartar and polish the enamel underneath. After cleaning, it’s over to you for regular tooth brushing and diets that encourage chewing, salivation and mechanical scraping of the teeth.

ethodism first came to Bourne in 1810 and there has been a chapel on the current site on Abbey Road since 1812. Over the years, we have updated the buildings, but our Mission Statement has remained the same: “Open to God, growing in Christ. Reaching out to others. United in the power of the Holy Spirit”.
We try as much as possible to reach out to the local community, as well as the wider world. Our Spring Fayre, Strawberry Tea and Christmas Tree Festival are some of our annual major events. Worldwide, we support a charity in India, (“Brighter Futures”), who help with leprosy and AIDs victims, whilst locally, “Evergreen” is our charity for 2018.

School News Bourne Westfield On Tuesday February 27th, thirty children from Bourne Westfield visited Charnwood Primary School in Leicester to share a fun day of creativity. The collaboration with Charnwood Primary was established last year during Bourne Westfield’s successful journey to Platinum Arts Mark, and it has given the children a valuable insight into cultural diversity and the benefits of working together. Charnwood School visited Bourne Westfield during Arts Week last July; fifty of the children have subsequently become pen pals and February’s visit was a very special event for them. The children from both schools worked together during the day to create Mehndi designs on candles, portraits of each other on tiles for display
in both schools, and Henna Artwork. They cooked together and learnt some traditional dancing, as well as sharing playtimes and lunch. The experience was hugely positive for everyone. Rebecca Beavis, Arts Director, said, ‘It was so lovely to see the children reconnect, interact with each other and learn together about each other’s cultures; we had a fantastic day! Charnwood made us very welcome and we all learnt so much’. This collaborative work was presented to the Chartered College of Teaching as part of their annual conference in February by Mr Farhaan Patel, Deputy Headteacher from Charnwood. Mr Patel added, ‘I’m so pleased that this collaboration goes from strength to strength. It was great to see how all of the children engaged with the activities and each other – long may it continue!’ Plans are already underway for Charnwood to visit Bourne Westfield again this July during Arts Week.
BOURNE ABBEY - COUNTY CHAMPIONS!!!! Congratulations to the Year 6 netball team from Bourne Abbey C. of E. Primary Academy who have been crowned County Champions for 2018! The tournament took place at the Grantham Meres Leisure Centre on Thursday March 8th. The team comfortably won all their first round matches, 14-0, 6-1, 10-0, 4-0 and went on to play Grasby and Grantham Preparatory Primary Schools in the round robin finals. They beat Grasby Primary School 5-0 but their second match was much tighter. They were losing 2-0 at half time to Grantham Preparatory, but showed real determination and excellent team work to turn it round to 4-2. Mrs Clare Ladley, PE Leader, said, “We are so proud of the team. Only three goals scored against them all day, amazing defending!” 66

Morton C. of E. Primary School - New Nursery Provision At the end of the spring term, part of Morton Church of England Primary School held a Teddy Bears Picnic where we invited existing Reception children and their new pre-school friends for some fun and games at school. The children loved their craft activities in the classroom, biscuit making, and a singing session to finish off the day. The children can’t wait to see their new Nursery! The final touches are being applied to the brand new, purpose-built, school-based Nursery. Little Owls Nursery, we are delighted to be opening on May 14th 2018. This is the result of a major, capitalfunding boost from the Department for Education and in association with Lincolnshire County Council. Highly qualified and experienced early years staff will be supporting, from two years old to school age. Early Years Entitlement funding of fifteen and thirty hour sessions are available, and additional “top up” sessions can be purchased to complement a variety of
different childcare needs. Our brand new Nursery has excellent resources, a covered outdoor area and large garden area to enhance learning, all year round. In addition, we are also able to use the school facilities, such as the Forest School and large outdoor space. Being a school-based Nursery, we work closely with the Reception class, aiding in a smooth transition for the children into their Reception Year. We offer a child-led curriculum, able to respond to individual children’s needs and interests in a fun, engaging and stimulating way. Please contact the School on 01778 570389, if you would like any more information or would like to arrange a visit.

uring the 19th century, North America offered the chance for young people to prosper and tales of success that reached Bourne spurred many more to seek their fortunes on the other side of the Atlantic. It was not just the men who made the perilous journey into the unknown but also the women who are often forgotten yet without them families would not have survived or communities thrived and it was often their courage and determination that became the driving force for good in the New World. One such woman was Frances Harriet Hester, then a young mother, of Hanthorpe village near Bourne, who had met and fallen in love with Joseph Tye Flatters when he started his working life as a sales assistant at her parents’ grocery and drapery shop, Rodgers & Hester, in the market place and soon they were married. Joseph became a photographer, a prominent bellringer at the Abbey Church and a trumpeter with the Bourne Town Band, but he was an adventurous spirit and after reading about others who had made their fortunes, he decided to follow and sailed aboard the SS Scandinavian from Liverpool in May 1871, arriving in Quebec the following July with his wife and their four young children, sons Joseph, James and William, and daughter Nellie. Hester was to have eight more children

in Canada, although one, a baby girl called Fannie, died in 1882, six weeks before her second birthday. The couple settled at Aylmer, Quebec, where Joseph became sheriff and court bailiff, travelling the district on horseback, but in June 1885, while questioning a suspect, he was shot and fatally wounded. He was 43 years old and had been in Canada for only fourteen years. His death left his widow in difficult circumstances but Joseph had been insured and the town council agreed to pay his salary for a year, thus enabling Frances to bring up her large family. She died in 1928, aged 84, but not before she had returned to England for a visit to Bourne in 1906, her first time home since she had left for a life in the unknown 35 years before. Joseph and Hester had 33 grandchildren and today her extended family is a large one spread throughout North America. At the latest count there were more than 60 great grandchildren, all living in various places including Aylmer, Ottawa, Quebec, Halifax, Montreal and Toronto in Canada and Ohio, West Virginia and Texas in the United States, where Hester’s story is still recounted with pride. Zero Limits Car and Motorcycle Parts Ltd. … and right here in Bourne! No longer will Bourne residents need to travel miles for their car and motorcycle accessories, spare parts, lubricants, cleaning materials or advice on what they need to solve minor motor ailments, ever since Zero Limits opened their doors at the end of March. This muchneeded facility, located on Victor Way, just off Cherry Holt Road in Bourne, has already prompted an absolute deluge of favourable comments
and recommendations on social media, which must make business partners, Paul Hutchings and Richard Hocking, delighted with their new venture. Theirs is not a huge stockpile of every available wiper blade, headlight bulb or brake cable on the market, but rather a fabulous network of reliable contacts, from whom any item can be obtained and be in-store, usually within twenty-four hours, but more likely, later the same day. Both Paul and Richard are exservicemen, with years of experience in the automotive industry, and both appreciate the importance of

Police Patrol
Timely Advice on Under-age Drinking by PC 361 Claire Wilson
A
s the evenings stay lighter longer and the weather warms up, it is understandable that young people will want to be outside, enjoying themselves with their friends. Unfortunately, with the lighter nights, we will see an increase in the number of young people drinking in outside areas, often leading to an increase in anti-social behaviour and litter being left, blighting our green spaces. It is against the law for anyone under the age of 18 to purchase or attempt to purchase alcohol, or for anyone over the age of 18 to buy it for those who are underage. If the police come across young people drinking, their alcohol can be seized and disposed of under the Confiscation of Alcohol (Young Persons) Act, 1997, and police officers will take the details of the young people and inform their parents of the unacceptable behaviour. If a young person gets caught with alcohol three times,
then they could be liable to a fine or arrest. As well as being against the law, drinking especially at a young age can be dangerous. Bodies not used to large quantities of alcohol can quickly become overwhelmed and succumb to alcohol poisoning. Almost 65,000 children and young people require A&E treatment each year for alcohol-related problems. In addition to the dangers to those
drinking the alcohol, the impact on the wider community can be tremendous. People often call the police to report groups of youths acting antisocially or who are intimidating them, and quite often this behaviour has been brought on by alcohol. Our green spaces have sometimes been trashed in the past with empty bottles and cans, and play areas have been left unusable due to rubbish and damage, requiring dedicated people to clear up after them. Children often feel pressured into behaving differently with their friends and perhaps do things they wouldn’t usually do, like drinking. We would ask parents that you have a conversation with your children to make sure they are aware of the consequences of being caught with alcohol and the potential health risks to them. We hope that you have a lovely spring and enjoy the (hopefully) improving weather, but please just think about the risks before you drink, and act in a respectful way to people and property.
