There will be a short presentation by the Executive Headteacher, Mr Laurence Reilly at 6.00pm and 7.00pm in the School Hall.

Introduction

Welcome to Your July Issue. As parents, I don’t think we ever lose that watchful eye of ours keeping tabs on what our children are doing; from them staying safe on the bouncy castle, through checking their homework diaries, to waiting to hear they’re back safe from a night out at university. My own “watchful eye”, however, had a tear or two in it recently as Ed, our youngest son, took the plunge, (literally!) Don’t panic, he’s not getting wed, (although I have heard that our editor’s eldest son, Rob, will be marrying his childhood sweetheart, Jade, some time soon). No, Ed’s plunge came as he leapt out of a plane to raise money for charity. “Proud” and “relieved” hardly do it justice! High summer is now upon us and the school holidays are in sight. Make the most of what our local communities are offering, by checking out our “What’s on section”, and let’s hope this warm weather stays with us just a bit longer!

Claire x

One of the many fascinating things about my role as editor, as I begin my fifth year in the chair, is that I get the chance to visit places which hold special memories from a much earlier time. Why most of them happen to be pubs, I can’t imagine! This month, the Waggon and Horses in Langtoft comes under the spotlight. It was my one-time local, as my first steps on the property ladder in 1981, had me living nearby in a bungalow costing £14,750! Also looking back this month will be Claire Lockett, our travel guru, as her Travel Counsellors business celebrates a quarter century of making holidaymakers’ dreams come true. Looking forward, however, we bring you the latest update on Bourne Galletly Practice’s expansion. Enjoy the words … and brace yourselves for the school holidays –Yee Ha!

The Waggon and Horses at Langtoft – Increasingly Popular Restaurant, but still a Traditional Village Pub A recent refurbishment of Langtoft’s Waggon and Horses has brought huge improvements to this pub which sits alongside the A15, just north of Market Deeping, and at the heart of a large and active community. Not only has the capacity of the restaurant area almost doubled to forty covers, the owners, Richard and Deborah Moore, can now operate from a much larger, professional kitchen, which can only be seen as good news to the ever-increasing number of diners and drinkers who are calling to see just how things have changed recently. The Waggon and Horses is the first hostelry that Richard and Deborah have owned and run together; Richard prepares the menus and is head chef, whilst his wife deals with all ‘front of house’ affairs. Alongside these roles, there is the small matter of bringing up three children, aged eight, six and four, so ‘dull moments’ just do not exist! Other staff include Timothy Smith, (ex-Wishing Well), as Second Chef, as well as a number of young, part-time and enthusiastic, bar staff and waiters. Richard and Deborah have been in the licensed trade for many years, both at Oakham for a while. Richard was also lease-holder at Baston’s Spinning Wheel, (before it became The White Horse), and he has also worked at The Wishing Well in Dyke, so a combined forty years of experience between them means they know how to run a successful house – and that is just what the Waggon and Horses seems to be becoming. The emphasis since the Moores arrived in 2015 has turned more towards the restaurant arm of the business. They were the first serious food operators there, who had wide experience of the catering industry, after many years of it being just a “drinkers’ local”. That said, however, Deborah is quick to add that there are still plenty of people who frequent the bar area, whilst the presence of the thriving darts, dominoes and crib teams confirms the opinion that here is still a traditional village pub, at the heart of the community. What has been really 2 4

encouraging, Deborah adds, is how several of the local ‘drinkers’ are now bringing in outsiders to their ‘refurbed local’, proud to show it off and enjoy a delicious meal at the same time. The menus have been created to offer an eclectic mix of modern British favourites, with a firm foundation of local, fresh and seasonal ingredients, sourced from dedicated and discerning suppliers, such as Alec Day in Bourne, for meat and fish, whilst Gary Houldershaw at Premier Produce can be relied upon for quality fruit and vegetables.

ideal venue for birthday and anniversary celebrations, wakes and christenings. Offering both hot and cold food, they can accommodate sit-down functions for up to forty people, but twice that for just a buffet.

Bourne Classic Car and Bike Carnival – “Bigger and Better than Ever” “Bigger, busier and better than ever” seemed to be general consensus of opinion after another wonderful example of how we Bourne folk, (and no small number of ‘outsiders’ this year), can come together and have a fabulous, fun-packed afternoon. The sun shone, despite some threatening dark clouds at times; the proud owners of almost five hundred classic cars and motorbikes smiled and answered questions galore from the ‘petrol-heads’; toddlers clung on to their balloons and ice creams; the entertainers on the stage performed with style; and the organising team continued their tireless labours right to the end of a highly successful afternoon.

CARNIVAL

Photographs by Alan Dolby CPAGB

The winning entries were the 1961 Vauxhall Cresta car and the 1947 Vincent HRD motorbike. It is an incredible achievement for such a small, non-profit-making group as The Bourne Events Team to produce such a slick, well-organised performance yet again. Without their dedication and also the generosity of the local businesses whose support and sponsorship is most appreciated, then events like this would just not happen. Special thanks also go to the official photographer, Alan Dolby. The Events Team will very soon be starting the planning stage for their next ‘big one’, The Magical Christmas Fayre and Lights Switch-on, to take place on Saturday December 1st.

What a Man!

James Loses 2st 10lbs to Win Slimming Competition A super slimmer from Stamford who attends the Bourne Salvation Army Hall Group has scooped the title “Man of the Year 2018”. Since joining in January this year, James Peake has lost an incredible 2st 10lbs, proving that Slimming World works just as well for men. Like many men, James thought that slimming clubs were mainly aimed at women, and assumed the focus would be on ‘diet’ food and talking about people’s emotions. However, he decided to give it a try after receiving some news from his doctor that his blood pressure was sky high and needed medication. James says, “Something had to change, I couldn’t carry on like I was, otherwise I wouldn’t be here to see my grandchildren grow up. Also, Tori is my daughter and, seeing as she was becoming a consultant, I felt it was the perfect opportunity to start”.

Tori, who runs the Slimming World Group, says she is incredibly proud of James: “He has done brilliantly and is a real inspiration to the group. We know that many men assume slimming clubs won’t be right for them, but James shows that once they come through the doors they do brilliantly. Like James, I would advise anyone who would like to lose weight to find the courage to take that first step.” The Salvation Army Hall Slimming World Group is held every Thursday at 5.30pm and 7.30pm. Anyone interested in joining the group can pop along or for more information, they can call/text Tori on 07849095520. Follow the Facebook Page for upcoming Joining Offers and advice: Slimming World Bourne with Tori - Every Thursday, The Salvation Army.

James was pleasantly surprised to find that the support provided by the group was practical, and the camaraderie and sense of competition appealed to him. He also enjoyed following Slimming World’s Food Optimising eating plan, which is based on the science of satiety and energy density, enabling him to enjoy generous portions of healthy food to satisfy his appetite, so he didn’t have to go hungry. James enjoys meals like steak and chips, curries, fry ups and not forgetting the all-important Sunday Roast. “It was nerve-wracking that first week in the group, but I wasn’t the only man there and everyone was so supportive. Now I really look forward to the sessions, I’m even part of the Social Team. There is lots of banter and laughter and I get some really good ideas too, from new recipe suggestions to ideas to boost my activity levels. As the weight came off, James found he had more energy and so he was eager to use it: “As a man, I always thought that physical activity would be the best way to lose weight, but when I was at my heaviest I just wasn’t fit enough to do it”, he explains. 8

Discovering . . . Raymond Mays

his town will forever be associated with motor racing and the all British car which was produced in Bourne to make its mark in international motor racing, a personal success story for Raymond Mays (1899-1980) whose interest had been inspired by his father’s passion for the automobile. Thomas Mays was a successful businessman who became one of the first owners of a motor car in Bourne and a frequent competitor in local motoring events, winning many trophies with Raymond often accompanying him in the passenger seat. The boy’s interest in motoring continued and by the time he was twenty he owned his first car, a speed model Hillman which was traded in for a Bugatti Brescia called Cordon Rouge, after the famous brand of champagne. A second Bugatti followed, this time called Cordon Bleu after the brandy, and he was soon recognised as a driver of outstanding skill, winning hundreds of trophies between 1920 and 1950. So began a career in pursuit of a faster motor car and in 1934 English Racing Automobiles, or ERA, was formed using workshops built on the orchard adjoining his lifelong family home at Eastgate House. The cars produced there subsequently raced successfully at Brooklands and the Isle of Man, two important motor racing circuits which attracted British drivers, as well as Nurburgring in Germany where in 1935, ERA cars took first, third, fourth and fifth places, and the winner’s sash. By 1945, Raymond was pondering on the possibility of an all-British car to break the foreign domination in Grand Prix events and so British Racing Motors, or BRM as it became known, was founded, the first car being demonstrated to the motoring world at Folkingham airfield in December 1949 when it was hailed as a world beater. More tuned-up versions followed and in 1960, workshops for further development were built on

New engines and cars were designed in the pursuit for perfection and in 1962 this perseverance paid off when the BRM became the first all-British car to win the world championship and the company’s top driver, Graham Hill, became world champion. Hill, who was awarded the OBE, was killed in an aircraft crash in 1975 while Raymond was honoured with a CBE shortly before his death in 1980 but his achievements are remembered by the motor racing memorial alongside the river in South Street and a magnificent display of silver trophies at the nearby Heritage Centre.

Borntocreate18 – Town Hall Art Talent on Show On the weekend of July 21st and 22nd, Bourne will see the old Town Hall open its doors for the second time to welcome the public to view and celebrate the artistic talents of school children. Children from local schools, (Bourne Westfield Primary Academy, Bourne Abbey Church of England Academy, Edenham C of E Primary School, Elsea Park Church of England Primary Academy, Morton C of E Primary School, Bourne Academy, Bourne Grammar, The Willoughby School, and Stamford College), along with schools in Leicester, Liverpool and London, have all worked with Helen Graham a local practising artist to produce work which will form an installation, entitled ‘Hopes and Dreams’. After the success last year of Bourne’s first-ever collaborative schools arts installation, ‘Rebirth’, Helen, who has a wealth of experience with large-scale installations and community art projects, wanted to create an installation which gave a voice to

children’s future dreams. Helen had a vision of using art to send a clear message to the influencers of education, that the Creative Arts have a powerful part to play in our children’s ability to fulfil their ambitions. The interactive installation will be on show at the UAL Camberwell Gallery, London, from June 19th – 24th, before making its way to Bourne in July. Helen has worked with local teachers and children to produce an installation that involves over 10,000 letters by children to their future selves. The children were asked to think about what they wanted to be when they grew up, and how the Creative Arts could develop and nurture the skills needed within these roles. Along with Helen, the project has been directed by Rebecca Beavis, (Arts Director at Bourne Westfield Primary Academy), and has been organised in collaboration with the Town Hall Charity Committee. The installation will be housed in the old Court Room, and

downstairs there will be a variety of art work on display by all of the participating schools. Visitors to the exhibition will be invited to leave their feedback on a working wall, and be able to see a photographic journey of the installation, as well as add to the installation with their own letter if they wish. Following an official opening of the installation on Wednesday July 19th, (which will be attended by a representative from each school, local dignitaries and project partners), Stamford’s newly-elected Poet Laureate will be attending the event to announce the winners of a schools poetry competition that will run alongside the art Installation. The exhibition will open its doors to the public on Saturday and Sunday July 21st and 22nd, from 10am to 4pm. The exhibition is free and all are welcome. The Cutting Room - Have Beautiful Long Hair Within a Couple of Hours!

A

t a popular Bourne hair salon, owner Kirsty Woods and stylist, Abbey Locke, are encouraging the public to leave their salon with long, flowing locks! Yes, of course Kirsty and Abbey are still continuing to cut, re-style, colour, apply highlights and all the other techniques their clients will request, and have been doing so regularly in the nine successful years during which Kirsty has been in charge. But, with the arrival last November of Abbey, (with her experience gained as an “extensionist” at top Peterborough salon, Michael John), the time seemed right to offer this fabulous technique, which has taken the hair extension industry by storm! With the LA Weave, the hair weft gets sewn onto a track made using tiny silicone beads, and offers an alternative to the traditional sew-in weave. There are many benefits of the LA Weave: • Application takes less than two hours.

INDIVIDUAL EXTE

• Removal is easy and takes fifteen minutes. • There are no bonds, no glue, no chemicals nor heat. • The hair has an eight to ten week life, after which it is removed and re-fitted. • The hair is 100% re-usable, for up to twelve months.

VE BEFORE LA WEA

The hair is hand-picked and ethically sourced from Russia and Mongolia. Colour match and consultations are free. Prices for the LA Weave depend on length, thickness and quantity, and start at £150. Go to The Cutting Room’s Instagram and Facebook for images and recommendations.

E AFTER LA WEAV

Look out for the salon’s latest recruit, Loki, the gorgeous miniature dachshund, (who does not sport the LA Weave!)

Revolver Fund-Raising Gig Almost Hits the £1,000 Target A recent fund-raising evening at Bourne’s Angel Hotel netted an enormous £939.56, when one of the Bourne area’s finest rock outfits, Revolver, created an unforgettable evening for everyone involved. The money will be split between the Alexander Needham Fund and the Willoughby School. Alexander is an eight-year-old who has an extremely rare neurodegenerative disorder called Batten Disease, which affects his cognitive impairment, sight and motor skills, and causes seizures. He attends the Willoughby School, Bourne’s fabulous special school for pupils with profound, severe and complex learning needs.

Micky Stokes, prolific fund-raiser and one of the organisers of the evening, commented, “It was an amazing night, with the dance floor full the whole night long. The band members were lovely, so kind and supportive. I would like to thank them, The Angel

Hotel for hosting the event, and everyone who supported it”. Look out for the next fund-raiser on November 9th, when Miss Madonna, the U.K.’s number one Madonna tribute act will play at Grantham’s Urban Hotel. Check out: http://missmadonna.co.uk .

Dare-devil Ed’s Sky-dive for a Worthy Cause To leap out of an aircraft the day after your last GCSE exam might not be on the top of the wish-list for most teenagers – (the day before your first one maybe!) Jenny Stagg Earlier this year, Bourne lost a very popular resident of over forty years, when Jenny Stagg passed away at the age of seventy-five, having lost a seven year battle with cancer. Her husband, Pete, approached us to make reference to Jenny’s passing, as a way of sharing with those who knew her some of his memories of over fifty years of a happy marriage. In brief, Jenny had that wonderful knack of getting along with almost anyone, and her circle of friends grew, the more she became involved with other parents, when daughters Andrea and Teresa were growing up in the town, and then when Jenny involved herself with the Brownies and the Girl Guides. “Jenny had a very bubbly personality and liked a good joke; her glowing smile and fits of the giggles made her unique,” Pete remembers fondly. juLY 2018

Health

Prepare to Bare!

by Claire Saunders, Renu - Health, Beauty & Fitness

A

fter covering ourselves up over the winter the thought of exposing certain body parts in the summer can fill some of us with dread. Excess weight, cellulite, skin conditions and slack or saggy skin can take the fun out of enjoying the sunny days ahead. This month, Claire from Renu gives her top tips on how you ‘prepare to bare’ this summer Exfoliate – Collagen plumps the skin and gives it elasticity. We lose about 1.5% of collagen every year from our twenties. Regular exfoliation encourages the skin to produce collagen and new, fresh skin to reach the surface. We would recommend Decleor 1000 grain exfoliator: £26.00. Exercise – Muscles create tone in the body and they degenerate over time. Regular exercise will increase your metabolic rate to aid weight

loss, increase circulation to improve skin tone and cellulite, and give you a burst of energy and confidence! Thirty minutes, three times per week in our ladies gym gives an average

loss of six pounds and eight inches. Hydrate – Dehydrated skin means wrinkles and orange-peel skin. Hydrate from the inside with plenty of water, and hydrate from the outside with a good quality moisturiser daily. This will keep the elasticity in your skin and mean you keep your summer colour longer. We would recommend Decleor satin softening dry oil: £32.00. Detox – Dairy, wheat, sugar and caffeine can all contribute to skin conditions and/or bloating. Become your own body’s detective and see how it reacts when you take one of these out of your diet for a week. You may be surprised with the results!

Depression Happens to Children and Adults It’s like a big dark cloud and hypnotherapy can help the sun shine through

A

re you feeling depressed? Everyone feels a bit low sometimes, but depression is much more than this. It may be that you suffer from feelings of helplessness, guilt or worthlessness; perhaps you have difficulty making decisions or concentrating on anything; maybe you feel tired and pessimistic all the time. Feeling Hopeless? In the depressed brain, the primitive part of the mind is much more active. This part of the brain is normally very negative and ‘worstcase-scenario’- focused. This makes us feel hopeless and unable to see a way out. It seems like a lonely and unforgiving place to be. The depressed brain is starved of positive chemicals and this literally restricts your ability to think clearly and resourcefully. Hypnotherapy is designed to manage the chemistry inside your brain to help you move towards an optimistic outlook. Want to stay in bed? When we feel depressed, we want to put our life on pause and stop interacting with the rest of the world. We are much more tired and lacking in healthy energy. We just want to stay curled up in our duvets and shut ourselves away. If you have been depressed, you may have noticed that you can ruminate or worry a lot during those periods. This type of worrying is typified by taking an allor-nothing thinking style. This is because, when we are stressed and emotionally aroused beyond a certain point, the mind takes the fight/flight approach and looks at the worst, most extreme, scenario. We don’t look at our situation from a rational perspective, taking in all the possibilities like we might do when we are more relaxed

Feeling Helpless? Depression takes away our confidence and our ability to remain rational and positive about ourselves and our situations. We feel so low and need some help to get us boosted and back on track again. Can’t see any positives? It’s a very negative place to be. Our primitive and depressed mind is designed to focus on problems and be vigilantly looking out for danger. In this state of mind, we lose the ability to think clearly and intellectually. How Hypnotherapy Helps Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can offer an alternative approach, helping you to focus on the positives in your life and working towards a brighter future. It works well as a supplementary therapy, working in tandem with other medical interventions. We work together to help you to understand how your brain works, why you might be suffering the way you do and how we can get you back to being the person you want to be. You already have all the resources that you need, and Solution Focused Hypnotherapy could help you to find them.

The Blight of so-called “Text Neck”!

T

here is no question that the development of technology and changes to the way we communicate with each other has led to us being virtually glued to our electronic devices. Such changes in habits have been attributed to the upsurge in treatment requirements for postural complaints. The so-called “Text Neck Syndrome” is an overuse syndrome or repetitive stress disorder, caused by holding your head in a downward and forward position for long periods of time. When you hold your head in a correct upright position with the ears central to the shoulders, the neck muscles and spine can equally support the weight of the head. If the head is allowed to fall forwards and downwards by even 1 inch from its natural position, approximately six times as much force can be generated through the neck!!

treatment, exercise and raising your general awareness to help you minimise the effects of a modern life. For further advice, please contact The Wellhead Practice.

To illustrate this, imagine holding a bowling ball close to your chest with both hands. Now imagine holding the same bowling ball with your hands away from the body with outstretched arms. Which is harder? The same can be said for your head; the further away from the body it falls forwards, the greater the effort required to support it. Over time, symptoms such as stiffness, dull aches and sharp pains in the neck, shoulders and upper back can occur. Occasionally, headaches and sometimes referred pain or “pins and needles” in the arms may be suffered. In the worst of cases an increased rounding or hunching of the spine may lead to chronic pain. Treatment of the above symptoms may be helped by remedial massage. A protracted neck (where the chin is positioned more forwards) tends to create tension in the muscles at the front of the neck and chest while overstretching, and weakening the muscles at the back of the neck, shoulders and upper back. After a full postural assessment and joint range testing, appropriate treatment will include massage and stretching, to allow the shoulders to rotate backwards and alleviate any tension in the chest and muscles at the front of the neck. This can help soothe trigger points and other areas of specific pain. A course of treatment will aim to reduce your pain, restore normal range of movement and strength while developing full functional normal movement and ultimately, reduce any recurrence. It is unlikely that we will stop using our devices both at work and at play, but prevention is better than cure. Sports / remedial massage may help you to improve your posture through

How can Exercise Help with Aches and Pains?

O

ftentimes, new mothers have a whole host of body aches and pains. This can be from the angle at which the baby is fed, carried or cradled; the way a mother and baby may sleep; or simply from a lack of sleep! Unfortunately, most people think that, by resting all of the time, these aches and pains will eventually go away. As much as rest is important for a mother, movement is crucial. With the positioning of feeding and cradling the baby, most women suffer from pain and discomfort around the neck, the top of the back and across the shoulders. During my sessions, I focus

on teaching you how to use movement, resistance and releases, to reteach the body how to move correctly, in a painfree and supportive way. Functional movements are also used; educating the body to move safely and lift effectively, reducing pain and discomfort. The equipment is simple, using bodyweight, resistance bands and a mat, making it easy to practise any exercises at home as part of your daily routine. As the five week course progresses, resistance is increased to build strength gently and in a supportive way.

“Our contractors, (D Brown Ltd), continue to work hard on our building project aiming for an autumn completion. At times, there are up to fifty builders on site. The building is now water-tight and, walking around the extension, it is amazing to see just how much more space we will have. Downstairs, there will be ten new consulting rooms and a minor operations suite, whilst upstairs there are eight new staff offices and a large staff rest room. We are now planning the internal fittings and fixtures, whilst debating who gets the best new consulting rooms! In the future, we hope to make use of the new, safe technology available to ensure the highest possible standard of healthcare is provided to you and your family, and we would like to take the opportunity to tell you about online access to your medical records. Many of our patients already use this system and benefit from faster and smarter access to healthcare. With over half of GP practices using online access, your information is secure and your records are protected by the highest standards of online security. Using Patient Access, it is possible to view your medical records and keep track of your test results, immunisations and allergies. Ordering medication is straight-forward and can be done at your convenience. You can also book online to speak to your GP at a time that suits you, and we will ensure that you receive the care that you need on the day. Registering for online access is simple; please come to see one of our receptionists with photographic ID, they will provide you with an access code, and the rest should be straightforward.

Travel Counsellors – Twenty-five Fabulous Years

Clare Lockett

Travel Counsellor

July 2018 marks Clare Lockett’s 25th anniversary in the travel industry, and the twelfth anniversary of her starting her own travel business with Travel Counsellors.

From humble beginnings in 1993 as a ‘YTS’ at Thomas Cook, Stamford, Clare went on to the larger Peterborough store, before working on tailor making bespoke longhaul itineraries. In 1999 she then moved into Operations and became a 24 hour Duty Manager. With the wealth of knowledge and experience she had gained within the years in retail sales, the Tour Operator Tailor Made Department, the Duty Office and in customer relations, it gave Clare the confidence and experience needed to set up and run her own business. So, on July 10th 2006, Clare started her new venture … and ‘Clare Lockett - Travel Counsellors’ was born! Clare says, “It was a leap of faith, with a toddler, busy family life and no customers. Twelve years on and all I can say is WOW ... every year it continues to grow from strength to strength and, in 2017, the team grew further when we welcomed Lianne in November.” (Lianne brings over fifteen years of experience in the travel industry, with ten years in the cruise sector). Since the business began, it has evolved to embrace the growing demands of clients who are looking for more adventure, culture and bespoke itineraries, not just an ‘off-the-shelf, one-size-fits-all’ package. Travel Counsellors

have actively sourced and forged excellent relationships with partners overseas who are able to help them uniquely personalise holiday experiences. This allows them complete flexibility, with every trip intelligently designed just for you. Clare Lockett- Travel Counsellors have a range of incredible experiences from which the independent traveller can choose. From walks with elephants, to intimate special interest talks, private guides, and lessons in traditional dance, or carving your own devil masks, they take today’s travellers on a whirlwind journey - creating experiences that allow you not simply to look in from the outside, but to really get beneath the surface, giving you an insight into such fascinating destinations. Customer service is at the very heart of their business. They promise that you will receive the highest level of personal service, alongside 100% honest and impartial advice, when you enquire and book with them. They take the time to really get to know you and your wish-list, which means they can tailor your perfect holiday. Clare would like to express her thanks for your continued and loyal support over the past twelve years and says, “Here’s to another great twenty-five!”

Gardening

The Potting Shed July tends to be one of the driest months, but nothing is certain with the weather nowadays! Make sure you keep crops well-watered. It is better to water them frequently and generously, as intermittent watering can cause problems with flowers falling, fruits failing to form, skins splitting and premature bolting. Watering at the beginning or end of the day is preferable, as the temperatures are lower and the sun not so strong, and spreading a mulch will help to slow down evaporation and suppress weeds. Also, hoeing is good for water retention as it breaks up the soil and it also keeps weeds at bay. All of the hard work of the previous months should be paying off now, and each visit to the allotment or vegetable patch should see you returning with fresh vegetables or fruit. It is time to harvest garlic and onions: a few days before you do this, loosen the soil around the roots, choose a dry spell, lift the bulbs and lay them on the ground in the sun to dry them out, as the more thoroughly they are dried out, the longer they will keep. Also those wonderful tasting early potatoes can be lifted: what better than freshly dug potatoes with mint, butter and a summery salad? Other jobs to do in the vegetable patch:• Plant out your leeks. Just dib a hole about 150mm/6″ deep, and drop the leek into the hole. Water it in and the job’s done. You don’t need to fill the holes with soil; enough will wash in with watering and rain. The reason you plant in a hole is to blanch the stem.

SALES | REPAIRS | SERVICE | PARTS | HIRE

• Poor potato crops are the result of poor nutrition, so try feeding potatoes with a tomato feed. Also check the potato plants and earth-up if necessary to prevent the tubers going green from exposure to light. • When climbing beans have reached the top of the canes, pinch out the growing tip. • Strawberries will finish fruiting, so tidy up old foliage and cut off runners, or use them to produce new plants. • Earth up brassicas to give them a firm hold in the soil and give them a top-dressing of nitrogenous fertilizer or an organic liquid feed. • Don’t forget to nip off the side shoots of your tomatoes, they appear in the “v” between leaf stems and main stems, and when there are four or five trusses, pinch out the growing tip of the plant to allow the fruit to ripen. • Spray tomatoes and potatoes against blight, and dig up any rogue potato plants from last year, as they may be harbouring disease. • Plant out cabbage, cauliflowers, Brussels, broccoli and kale for autumn and winter cropping. • Ensure that peas and brassicas are netted to keep off the pigeons. • Continue sowing salad crops. Take time to sit back, admire your hard work over the past few months … and enjoy the fruits of your labour. Happy harvesting!

get a good lather, which can aggravate and irritate the skin. As well as being abrasive, hard water doesn’t necessarily wash the entire residue off. This residue can be left on the skin which can worsen dry skin conditions. The NHS website lists “water especially hard, chalky water or heavy chlorinated water” as a common irritant of contact dermatitis.

We can supply all types of water softener and other related drinking water products. We also supply and deliver salt for all types of water softeners and we are especially proud of the personal service we offer our customers. What are the downsides of having hard water? New research has revealed the link between hard water and skin conditions like eczema. Scientists at the University of Sheffield and King’s College London have proved that hard water damages the skin, raising the risk of infection and potentially contributing to the development of eczema. The study, which we were asked to fund, proves what we’ve known here for years; when it comes to skin conditions, softened water can make all the difference. Minerals in hard water, the same culprits behind limescale, were shown to make skin more sensitive to irritation, but when researchers used softened water in their study, they found that softened water could reduce these negative effects. It could even lower the risk of eczema developing in the first place. For people living with chronic skin conditions, this research could be a game-changer, especially when one in five children is affected by eczema. With hard water you have to use more product to

How does a water softener work? In brief, it is designed to remove calcium (scale) and magnesium (scum) from hard water. They are installed at the point the water supply enters the premises and treat the whole house, therefore resulting in: reducing the cost of your soap/ detergent, removing existing limescale, preventing the build-up of limescale in your hot water system as well as around your taps and reducing your fuel costs and heating system costs. “Summer’s Here and The Time is Right for...” by Philip Bell, Senior Valuer, Newton Fallowell

T

he summer holidays are here at last which means the kids will have escaped from school and now holiday prices are mysteriously higher … I’m sure that is just a passing coincidence! However, you won’t need to worry about our fees suddenly going up at this time of year. We are in the company of some rather exciting and momentous historical events this month. Apollo 11 led to the first moon walk on the 29th of this month in 1969, and on July 2nd, 1928, women were granted equal voting rights in the UK. Now, if I’m not mistaken, these are two huge events that managed to take place during the school summer

holidays, yet I am often told that it’s hard to sell houses. I’m not entirely convinced that’s true. In fact, having sold houses all year round, up to and including the dreaded month of December, I’m pretty sure you can. If you want to get your house sold … and go on holiday, we can help. Our accompanied viewings and e-mail alerts will keep you posted while you enjoy the sun, sand, sea and Sangria. For all your property needs including sales, lettings and mortgages, don’t hesitate to contact your local award-winning estate agents, Newton Fallowell. We may just hold the keys to your success.

Legal Corner

What is the Benefit of Asking a Solicitor to Prepare Your Will? By Richard Wood – Double & Megson Solictors

Various entities hold themselves out as being able to act in preparing wills. Solicitors and Legal Executives have studied the legal requirements at a high level and have undertaken compulsory training in their practice. Solicitors are also regulated by the Solicitors Regulatory Authority and The Law Society. Solicitors also have professional indemnity insurance to provide clients with compensation, should they be negligent. There are also various audits that solicitors’ offices are subject to from time to time. Solicitors and Legal Executives have undertaken a minimum of four years’ training in many areas of law. They then specialise in the subjects that they focus on to provide the best possible advice to their clients. This enables

various issues to be recognised, ones which may not be picked up by a nonqualified individual who may perhaps only have will-writing training. Making a will can sometimes impact on other things, and qualified lawyers are able to provide specialist advice. At Double and Megson, we offer fixedprice wills in the majority of instances. Lasting Powers of Attorney are similarly provided without the hidden costs that

may sometimes be charged by other non-lawyer firms. Whilst sometimes a person may make a satisfactory home-made will, it is advisable to have that checked by a lawyer before being signed. This is because errors only usually come to light when the person has died. An incorrect or invalid will can result in expensive legal costs to resolve. Seeing a solicitor is always best to avoid these problems.

Owning an Old House

Get Peace of Mind before you buy... Gowers Surveyors are a local independent firm of Chartered Surveyors and Chartered Building Engineers, specialising in Period Property Building Surveys. We will provide you with a professional assessment of your prospective purchase so you are fully aware of what you are buying.

An old property really can have a character of its own and be much more interesting and pleasurable to live in than a modern house, but it is not for everyone. In buying an old house you will need to be prepared for a few ‘imperfections’. There may be draughts, bowing beams, damp spots that won’t go away, low head heights and small windows. The walls and floors may not be straight, and insulation may be limited. Repairs may be expensive and there may be ‘Conservation Area’ issues. However, if you are prepared to take on the imperfections and additional costs, owning an old house can be well worth the extra effort, but it is important that you have it checked over by someone who is experienced in how old properties ‘work’, before you buy it. We specialise in comprehensive building surveys of period properties. Our reports are designed to help you buy the house, rather than put you off unnecessarily. Rather than giving you a list of problems, we will talk it through with you and put it all into context to help you buy the house, fully informed, eyes open and knowing what you are taking on.

Our comprehensive service is designed to help you buy and understand your new home; explaining repair and maintenance issues and how old buildings ‘work’ along with advice on listed buildings, legal matters etc. We have a wealth of experience in particular with larger and historic properties and take pride in our attention to detail, pragmatic approach, quality of service and approachable manner. SPECTRE and MELTDOWN UPDATE

E

arlier this year, I published an article on the two major security flaws recently discovered in the majority of modern processors. These threats are called Spectre and Meltdown. We are now many months on and, thankfully, many of the manufacturers have produced patches for their products that prevent an attack on your system through these ‘back doors’. Sadly though, most of these patches are not automatically installed and require further action on your part. How to test your system for Spectre and Meltdown vulnerability.

by Taff Lovesey, Lites PC

The summary shown will include the make and model of your processor. Using Google search, type in ‘Spectre (or Meltdown) fix and then your processor type’.

This should return information on whether a fix has been issued for your processor type. In the example shown, (my PC at home), I had a Haswell processor, (an Intel i7 4000 series). The search reflects that a fix has been issued for that processor.

Download a free tool called InSpectre from the website https://www.grc.com/inspectre.htm I would suggest saving the downloaded file to your Downloads folder. When the download has completed, you will be able to run the program directly from the folder in which it was saved (e.g. Downloads). This will provide a summary of whether your system is vulnerable to either, or both, Meltdown and Spectre. Hopefully, you will see that both are protected and get the ‘all green’. Unfortunately, for most of you with Intel processors, this will not be the case, and you will find your systems vulnerable to Spectre in particular.

This download page can be found at Microsoft address http://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/search. aspx?q=4100347

My home PC was showing as vulnerable to Spectre but, after installing the patch, it was protected.

In this case you now have some detective work to do. If you know the processor type that you have in your system, then that will help, if not then go to This PC, right click on it and select Properties. A quick read of this article led me to the Microsoft patch site where the fix was available for downloading.

CAUTION: Although the fix provides protection, there is an overhead involved and it will slow down your system. How much depends on the processor you have and the type of programs that you use. You should search online to decide whether this overhead would cause you problems. It won’t for the vast majority.

ISA - Always Tax-efficient?

by Paul Ross, Financial Planner at Landmark IFA Ltd

I

SAs are a tax-efficient way to build up wealth, but less so when it comes to passing it on. So what are the inheritance tax implications of ISAs and how can they be mitigated? Inherited ISA Rules Inheritable ISA rules were introduced in April 2015, meaning an individual can inherit the value of their deceased spouse’s or civil partner’s ISAs, providing they died on or after 3 December 2014. Known as ‘additional permitted subscription’ (APS) allowance, it is based upon the value of the ISAs at date of death and is in addition to the surviving spouse or civil partner’s own ISA allowance, thereby preserving the taxefficiency of the ISA. For example, Mr and Mrs Smith both have ISAs; on Mr Smith’s death, his wife will have an APS equivalent to the value of her husband’s on the day he died in addition to her own annual ISA allowance. The APS is available for three years from his death or 180 days after the estate has been administered. Mrs Smith would still be entitled to it, even if he left his ISA portfolio to his children, as it doesn’t have to be the actual ISA monies that are

subscribed. Mrs Smith can only make use of her APS with a single provider, even if Mr Smith had multiple ISAs previously. Inheritance Tax (IHT) Rules However, it is the IHT considerations of inherited ISAs which are often overlooked or misunderstood. While there is no IHT on ISAs inherited between spouses or civil partners, this has nothing to do with inherited ISA rules - it is purely due to the IHT spousal exemption. Upon Mrs Smith’s death, her ISAs (now the combination of hers and her husband’s) will be included in her estate for IHT purposes, and assuming that any nil-rate bands are already used, potentially give rise to an IHT of up to 40%. Furthermore, for every additional annual ISA subscription Mrs Smith makes between her husband’s death and hers, HMRC would potentially be getting 40% in delayed IHT. But given that ISAs cannot be held in trust, what can be done to mitigate this? Planning Opportunities In the past, PEPs & ISAs have been sold and reinvested into a

discounted gift trust invested in an investment bond, providing an income for life and IHT efficiency. More recently, the use of AIM shares inside an ISA attracts business property relief and is IHT-relieved after two years if held on death, but are often not appropriate because of attitude to risk or capacity for loss. Another alternative is to use a whole of life protection plan, written on a joint life second death basis in a discretionary trust. With premiums perhaps paid from ISA income or withdrawals, (that could be replaced within a flexible ISA), and falling within the annual IHT gift and/or normal expenditure out of income exemptions, the sum assured would be paid out on second death into the trust for the beneficiaries to cover the IHT liability. Subject to health and the ability to continue to pay the premiums, (although the beneficiaries could pay them), this is a quick and simple solution that retains the taxefficiency afforded by ISAs. While ISAs continue to be taxefficient during life, they can be IHT-inefficient on death, so, professional advice is crucial to ensure appropriate IHT planning.

As a nation of garden lovers, we Brits are increasingly turning our outdoor spaces into extensions of our homes; cosy corners to relax in, barbecue areas for alfresco dining, and play dens for the children. Splashing out on making our gardens look great can mean spending a small fortune on lighting, furniture, ornaments, plants and even wall art. But while most of us ensure our house alarm is switched on, doors locked and a light left on when the house is empty, how many of us pay the same attention to garden security? Brighter days and longer weekends present more opportunity for mowing lawns, pottering in the garden, allowing the children to play outdoors and spending time with friends and family … and a chance for thieves to strike! According to the Crime Prevention website, garden crime has risen to about a million reports a year. Thieves will resort to stealing just about anything from the garden, from lawn mowers and expensive tools to fish from the pond and even newly-laid turf! However, we can all take some simple precautions to protect the garden and possessions against greenfingered thieves, particularly during weekends or summer holidays when the home is empty. 12/01/2018 11:52 • Take a walk around your garden and check things that may be appealing to a thief - an unlocked back gate or shed, (particularly if the shed contains expensive garden tools/machinery or bikes). • Get a reputable locksmith to secure gates and sheds. • Lock away ladders or anything which could be used to gain entry to your home. • CCTV surveillance will allow you to view your garden and any unwelcome activity from your home. • Install some sensory/outdoor lighting. • Alarm the garage to provide additional security, or think about installing garage roller shutter doors. • If your fencing is flimsy, broken panels could provide easy access to intruders, so consider investing in some new and improved fencing or panels. • If you are going away, even for the weekend, lock any back or side gates or other entrances to the garden to limit access. • Pack away out of sight any garden tools or equipment. Even if you take a break from cutting the front lawn, keep your mower out of reach of opportunist thieves. • Secure expensive plants with wire pegs dug into the ground around the root ball. • Use a security pen to mark valuable items, like garden furniture, ornaments or trampolines, with your postcode. • Consider defensive planting like prickly hedges or shrubs. • Join a local Neighbourhood Watch Group, where you and your neighbours can look out for each other. Find your nearest group https://www.ourwatch.org.uk/ When thinking about having any security, garden maintenance or crime prevention work carried out in your home and/or garden, always use someone reputable and trustworthy. Pets and Vets

“We’re all Going on a Summer Holiday” - Passports for Pets

F

or those of us thinking of taking our dog, cat or even ferret on holiday abroad, the pet passport legislation makes it easier for us to cross the border between the United Kingdom and other countries within E.U. Previously, we had to face the expensive route of quarantining our pets for months and blood testing adequate levels of rabies immunity to allow entry back into Britain. Since 2012, however, pet passports allow our pets to travel from certain countries without the difficulties previously experienced. Pet passports allow you to return to the UK a minimum of twenty-one days after issue. Your pet must be microchipped and have a rabies injection and, before travelling home, must have a tapeworm treatment no longer than five days and no shorter than twenty-four hours before travel. The vet who administers the tapeworm treatment must also sign the passport to this effect. It is also recommended that a second tapeworm treatment is given within one month of returning, although this is not a legal requirement as yet. Discuss with your vet any other parasitic controls that are needed abroad too. Some travel companies also require evidence that your pet is healthy for travel, so read your booking documents carefully.

Travelling by car ensure that your pet will have lots of opportunities to break the journey. Car sickness is a big problem for some, so discuss this well in advance with your vet. De-sensitising them to a long car ride is the best form of action, but this can take several weeks of training. Pills can alleviate some of the nausea for a short period, but tranquilisers are best avoided as they only make the travel worse. Place your pet in a secure carrier to keep them safe, and some prefer it darkened to reduce stress. Rules of pet travel vary between countries as well as between continents. Did you know, for instance, that it is illegal to own a ferret in California? For countries not within the pet passport scheme, export legislation is much more complicated. Check with the government website for more information: https://www.gov.uk/take-pet-abroad and get advice a few months in advance. Using companies that specialise in transporting pets reduces much of the stress. So, enjoy your holiday with your pet … and don’t forget the sunscreen.

If you intend to fly with your pet, you’ll need to plan further ahead, but do not despair. A well thought out plan of action will make the trip a lot easier. All pets must travel in an airline approved carrier. Buy the carrier well in advance and ensure that the size is adequate for your pet to turn around and sit comfortably. It must also be suitable for providing food and water for your pet. Slowly introduce your carrier to your pet and provide positive associations with it. Leave the door open, fill the space with treats, familiar toys and a blanket and by doing so you are ensuring that the panic trying to get them into the carrier on the big day will not happen. The next step is to have several dry runs with the carrier in transit. Take off and landing in a plane is the most stressful part of the journey so when they are used to being in it in the car, go to noisier places such as a car wash to help them adjust.

The Rotary Club of Bourne - Fifty Years On! The Rotary Club of Bourne celebrated its fiftieth birthday on May 28th this year. Rotary is an international organisation and has Clubs in over 160 countries and 1.2 milion members worldwide. The Bourne Club has been involved in a number of projects, all of which have been in partnership with other Clubs. During the conflict in the former Yugoslavia, for instance, the Club was involved with food and medical supplies to Kosovo. They have also recently completed a project in India, and also support most, if not all, disaster appeals, providing funds to buy shelter and ‘aqua boxes’. The Club also uses their funds to support many people in the local area, such as charities, individuals, project teams, youth competitions and many more. Each year, events are held to raise money to help with this support. There is also a social side to the Club, with regular events in the Bourne area. At the moment, they have twenty-five members and meet at The Wishing Well Inn, Dyke, on a Tuesday lunchtime at 1pm. Anyone can be a member, and

Stamford Shakespeare Company – Fifty Glorious Years! Every summer, more than 34,000 people from throughout the UK and from overseas attend the Stamford Shakespeare Company’s acclaimed summer season of plays in June, July and August at the Rutland Open Air Theatre, Tolethorpe Hall, near Stamford. Performances take place on an open-air stage, set within an enchanting woodland glade facing a 600-seat, raked, and permanently covered, auditorium. No performance is ever cancelled because of the rain. The Stage newspaper described it as “one of England’s premier alfresco theatre venues”, whilst The Sunday Times described a visit here as being “one of the finest things to do this summer”. In addition to the recognised high standard of performances the theatre is known for the quality of all its facilities, making it one of the finest openair theatres in Europe. This year, the Company is celebrating its golden anniversary. Work currently taking place includes an exciting revamp of the bar, restaurant and orangery which will celebrate the past fifty years. There will be costume and photo displays, exhibitions of the Company’s history and much more. Incredibly, the 2018 season has seen ticket sales hit one million since the Company began performing at Tolethorpe Hall, having transferred from The Monastery Garden at The George Hotel in Stamford in 1977. Throughout this summer, the Company are performing Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice and The Merry Wives of Windsor, and Richard Brinsley Sheridan’s The School for Scandal. The Merchant of Venice: Venice, 1596, and Antonio, an honourable merchant, enters into a chilling contract to enable his dearest friend to woo a beautiful heiress, whose fate lies waiting within caskets of gold, silver and lead. At the heart of the story stands Shylock, the Jewish moneylender, one of Shakespeare’s greatest and most complex characters.

This remarkable play, with its explorations of prejudice, love, justice, and the power of money, deeply resonates to us in these present turbulent times, but it also stands alone, as a truly gripping story. The Merry Wives of Windsor: The old rogue, Sir John Falstaff, has returned penniless from the war and plans to seduce two ‘merry wives’. Shakespeare’s hilarious comedy is his nearest approach to a farce, with people forever rushing in and out of doors, including a comic Welsh parson, a manic French doctor and a madly jealous husband. Depicting middle-class family life in an English provincial town, this production is set in 1947, a time of austerity and optimism, when women are finding a new role in post-war Britain and the musicians at the Garter Inn are playing ’40s jazz. The School for Scandal: Richard Brinsley Sheridan’s classic comedy sparkles with wit, verbal brilliance and an intricate plot exposing the lives and loves of fashionable London society. Sir Peter Teazle’s simple country bride becomes leader of a group of scandalmongers who tear their friends’ reputations to shreds. Can anyone escape the outrageous gossip of, amongst others, the aptly named Benjamin Backbite, Lady Sneerwell, Mrs Candour and Snake? This wonderfully funny play is one of the most engaging high comedies in the English language.

Performances: June 12th – September 1st 2018 Evening performance – 7.45pm start • Matinée performance – 1.30pm start Booking information: Box office: 01780 756133 • Further information: www.stamfordshakespeare.co.uk 56

Bourne Lions

Annual Family Fun Day Bourne and District Lions Club are holding their annual Family Fun Day at the Bourne Recreation Ground, Recreation Road, Bourne, on Sunday July 15th, from 11am to 5pm. This year’s main display event is performed by the PHOENIX WARLORDS, a medieval re-enactment group of warlords, soldiers, archers and peasants who come together to provide a living history display of medieval life. They invite members of the public to try on armour, have a go at archery and demonstrate weaponry through the ages, including swords, pikes, muskets, longbows and canons. As in previous years, attractions will include a variety of amusements, (bouncy castles, swings and roundabouts); craft and charity stalls and a car boot sale; refreshments and a licensed bar; a junior football competition; arena events and displays, to include dance troupes, the ‘Tuneless Choir’, and a Dog Show (sponsored this year by Vets 4 Pets and On the Ball); and a Fly Past by aircraft from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.

If you would like to know more about Bourne and District Lions Club and Lions Clubs International, then please contact us, using the form on our website http://bournelions.org/contact-us/ , or alternatively, speak to one of our members at the Fun Day or at any of our events.

Stall and car boot application forms can be downloaded from the Bourne Lions website http:// bournelions.org/family-fun-day/ The Bourne Lions miniature blue bus will once again be on site giving rides, and which has helped Bourne Lions over the years to raise thousands of pounds for the benefit of the local community. The bus is also available to hire for other organised fetes and events. Every year, the Bourne Lions Annual Fun Day gets bigger and better, with fun to be had by all, and remember - every penny raised by Lions Clubs goes to where it is needed. Not one penny goes on administration! Bourne and District Lions Club serves the local community of Bourne and surrounding villages and is part of Lions Clubs International, the world’s largest service club charity with over 1.4 million members in 209 countries, giving help to schools, providing equipment for hospitals, eye clinics, mobile health units, assisting the disabled, responding to disasters or just giving hands-on-help to those in need; many of whom are unaware that their lives have been touched by Lions. juLY 2018

Mayor

Words from the New Mayor David Mapp

What a week or so....... from Councillor to Chair of the Council and Mayor! It has been a very humbling (and busy) time for Christine and myself, since being made Mayor at the end of May, and I am so honoured to have been appointed by my fellow Councillors to represent Bourne throughout the town, around the county and beyond. We would both like to take this opportunity to thank all those people who have made kind comments, and expressed their offers of support for the forthcoming year. Our first week, following the inauguration, included the Mayormaking ceremony in Grantham; a lovely Civic Service at the Abbey in Bourne; and the opening of, I understand, a very successful Bourne Festival. This event has grown over the years to become a very important part of the town’s diary of events, enjoyed by all, and on this occasion blessed by fair

weather - no wellies or brollies for a change! Residents of the town should be proud of this event, and thanks should go to Paul, his fellow Round Table members and other supporters, for their superb efforts in organising what is now a ‘well-oiled’ machine providing this beer, food and music experience. We should also remember the efforts of Bourne United Charities ground staff who both work to keep the grounds in top condition during the year, but also work hard to make good the site after the Festival, sometimes following inclement weather. Whilst mentioning votes of thanks, Christine and I are very grateful for everyone who helped at both the Annual Meeting and the Civic Service, especially the Town Clerk, Ian Sismey, and Councillor Helen Crawford. The diary for the next few weeks is starting to fill up with Civic Services

Bourne

and other functions, and we will be working as hard as we can to promote the town further afield, and support local parish events as they arise. During my term in office I would like, through this monthly feature, to make people aware of current Council issues and am trying to find a title for the sub-piece. If anyone has an idea, please let me know. Keep it clean please! For now, please note that the Council is seeking to fill a vacancy for a Councillor, and anyone interested should contact Ian Sismey on 426123 with their details. Finally, the Lincolnshire County Council hot-line for the repairing of pot holes is 01522 782070. If you know of any, as I am sure you will do, please use the number and log them.”

Bourne Footlights Spooktacular Play

I

t was with mixed feelings that we went to see “Spirit Level” by Pam Valentine, the latest production by Bourne Footlights, as we have, in the past, attended some amateur dramatic companies’ plays that have been less than enjoyable. However, we were to be surprised: what an entertaining evening we, and the rest of the full house, had!

“Spirit Level” is a gentle and sometimes thoughtprovoking comedy about famous crime writer, Jack Cameron, (Martin Tyrrell), and his wife Susie, (Lynn Kirk), who drown in a boating accident but are refused entry into heaven because Jack is an atheist, and so they return to haunt the country cottage where they once lived. A young couple, Simon, (Ishmael Kamran), and Flic (Laura Harwood), move in and fun is to be had! Oh, and then there was the snobbish mother-in-law, (Nina Quinlan), and the bumbling estate agent, (James Shawley), whose

reaction to the ghostly goings on with the Christmas baubles and tinsel was highly amusing. I loved Susie’s guardian angel who arrived in kilt and silver-winged boots, complete with tam-o’shanter, ginger wig and a rucksack, so well played by Jack Dawson. Our congratulations go to the cast for their comic timing and good characterisation, which they maintained throughout the play: how do they remember all of their lines? It was Ishmael’s debut with Footlights and we are sure that we will be seeing more of him. A thoroughly enjoyable play; congratulations to co-directors Angie Rowell and Maureen Berkes. We look forward to their next production.

School News Exciting Changes Ahead for Early Years Provision at Bourne Abbey C. of E. Primary Academy

Thurlby Community Primary School

From September 2018, we are delighted to announce that our Early Years provision for children aged 2 to 4 years is being extended. We will be open from 7.30 a.m. – 6.00 p.m., 51 weeks of the year. This will offer parents and carers increased flexibility to choose from a range of sessions and additional wrap-around care, to meet the different needs of families in Bourne and the surrounding areas.

On Friday June 8th, Thurlby CP School celebrated their annual School Games Day. Different from the traditional ‘Sports Day’, Games Day is organised so that the children can take part in a variety of sporting activities and also to focus on the values of honesty, teamwork, determination, self-belief and passion for sports.

The sessions will allow parents and carers to choose to use their funded sessions, whether that be the statutory 15 hours or extended 30 hours, (depending on eligibility), during term time only, or stretched across 51 weeks of the year. Parents and carers can also choose to “top up” their childcare with additional wrap-around care sessions.

The whole school held a wonderful opening ceremony, where the posters and banners they had designed were held high! The pupils then spent the day taking part in activities such as track races, javelin, hurdles, high jump and team games. At the end of the day, a closing ceremony was held where those children who had demonstrated the values particularly well were rewarded with a certificate. The day was a great success and thoroughly enjoyed by all!

Exciting plans are also underway to have our 2, 3 and 4-year-old provision all under one roof in a purpose-built and fully refurbished unit, bringing together our current nursery and kindergarten.

BOURNE WESTFIELD - Samba City On Tuesday June 24th, Children in Year 4 at Bourne Westfield will travel to Lincoln City Football Club to be part of a unique opportunity to fill Lincoln City Football Club with noise and help to create the world’s largest Samba band! ‘Louder than Life Ltd’ are working in partnership with Lincolnshire Music Service, and children from across Lincolnshire will come together for this amazing event. To prepare for the big day, children have participated in a workshop with Tim Brain from ‘Louder than Life’ to learn the rhythms, and will continue to rehearse with their teachers. juLY 2018

If you would like further information, please contact the school by phone on 01778 422163 or e-mail on BAP. enquiries@abbeyacademies. co.uk . Tim will also be working with the rest of the school during Bourne Westfield’s annual Arts Week in July, when Bourne Westfield will be performing a whole school Samba Concert to parents, as the finale to a full week of creative activity. Arts Week begins on July 9th and Helen Graham will be working with the children all week to prepare art ready for the Bourne Schools Arts Exhibition at the end of term. Years 2 and 3 will be visiting Stamford Arts Centre; Year 4 will be going to London to watch the West End production of ‘Lion King’; and NCL Dance School will be working across the school to teach them some Hip Hop dance. Staff and students from Bourne Academy and Bourne Grammar will also be running workshops during the week in Drama, Music and Art. Arts Week is an annual favourite with everyone at Bourne Westfield and they are preparing to make this year’s the best one so far.

Stay Safe this Summer by PC 361 Claire Wilson

a picture of your kids at the start of the day to help easily identify clothing if they get lost.

s the weather heats up and the summer holidays approach, it is important to remind your children to stay safe, not just out-and-about but also online. In the nice weather it is great to get out-and-about in the fresh air; maybe a trip to the seaside? Keep an eye out when you are at a Lincolnshire seaside resort for Sandi the Starfish. They will be giving out free wristbands which you can write your name and phone number on and then place on your children so in the event they get lost or wander off then

you can be easily contacted by the police or other trusted adult. Perhaps you could agree a place to meet if you get separated and take

Going online is great fun, but we must always remember to follow a few guidelines when surfing the web, in order to stay safe. Remember that most of the people we meet online are strangers; they may be really friendly but we don’t know who they are. Never share your personal details with anyone over the internet. Some things need to be kept secret, like your name, address, passwords and pictures.

And most importantly, remember that the police are there to help you and your children and we want them to feel comfortable coming to us if they are lost or in trouble. As tempting as it might be, please try not to point at a police officer or PCSO and tell your kids we will take them away if they’re naughty. We want to be friendly and approachable to your little ones, not scary! Have fun and enjoy yourselves safely in the warm weather!

If you are ever worried about something you see on the internet, or someone says something horrible to you or makes you feel uncomfortable, it is important that you speak to an adult as soon as possible and tell them what has happened. You can learn more by going to the Lincolnshire Safeguarding Children board website at www. lincolnshirelscb. org.uk

Always be polite to people online; just because it is on the internet doesn’t mean it can’t hurt someone’s feelings.

You can follow the Bourne Policing Team on Facebook at www.facebook.com/BournePoliceuk or on Twitter at @BourneBboroNPT Bourne Police Station, West Road, Bourne, PE10 9PD 70

This month’s Citizens Advice article highlights the role of the local Research and Campaigns Team, who are all volunteers based nearby in Spalding, Stamford and Grantham, and who play just as important a role as advisors, collating details of the issues that people ask about, identifying those where we could improve lives by a change in legislation, and sending information back to National Citizens Advice, who work to lobby at national level.

Last month, a national scams awareness campaign was run throughout the whole country, and our team took part for the third year running. Citizens Advice wants to reduce the risk and impact of scams by raising awareness and encouraging people to take action – recognizing, reporting, and talking about the issues. Scams aren’t just a minor inconvenience to people. Aside from financial loss, they can cause distress and misery and, even if a scam has been avoided, it can lead to a widespread loss of confidence. Scams can also happen to anyone. Some encountered recently include: • Doorstep electricity meter credit • Prize draws, sweepstakes and foreign lotteries • Miracle health cures • Subscription traps • Property rentals • Pyramid selling and chain gift schemes • Working from home • Real fur sold as fake fur Recent research from Age UK found that around two fifths of older people across the UK who believe they have been targeted by fraudsters didn’t report it to an official channel. More than a fifth, (22%), admitted they didn’t tell anyone at all because they felt too embarrassed. Even just reporting it could help provide the authorities with the information they need to stop scams and prevent others from falling victim. Our team worked with the local Trading Standards organisation, holding stalls in shopping centres, giving talks, and getting posters up in Community Centres, and were very happy with the level of awareness generated.
