Start Your Countdown to Look Amazing This Winter

ust as the holiday season comes to a close, we start counting the weeks left before Christmas and the party season. If you are feeling like you would love to get back into a healthy routine and trim some holiday fat off, then this is not always a bad thing. Most of us respond well when we set a goal to achieve something, and so a landmark occasion can be a great motivator.

With twelve weeks until the end of the year, it’s a great time to start your countdown to look amazing this winter! If you could shed an average of just one pound a week, you would be almost a stone lighter by the time you are putting on your party outfit!

Make October Your “Stoptober” Month with Bourne to Vape Scott Hammerton is an enthusiastic proponent of vaping, which is completely understandable, considering his having opened, on August 4th this year, Bourne’s second vaping shop, devoted to this relatively new phenomenon.

As an ex-smoker, Scott, (26), sees the benefits to be gained from transferring from smoking cigarettes to adopting the ever-increasing practice of vaping. Our recent meeting involved Scott producing a clear and concise appraisal of vaping’s benefits, alongside the frustrations he feels, having to operate within the draconian guidelines set by the Tobacco Products Directive. One part of this actually prevents me from naming any of the multitude of products that fill the well-stocked shelves of his shop on South Street in Bourne.

As to just how “good” it is to be a vaper, the jury looks like being out for some time to come, especially when any long-term effects are to be considered. There are of course serious health implications. Those for smoking are presently more defined and outlined than for vaping. The process of smoking includes the combustion of tobacco which contains thousands of chemicals, over twenty of which have a strong connection to causing

cancer. These carcinogens include nicotine, hydrogen cyanide, arsenic and ammonia, amongst many others.

The primary process of vaping removes the need to combust anything, removing many of the harmless chemicals associated with smoking.

Any other chemicals found in vaping are mostly related to the process of flavouring, many of which are found to be ‘food grade’ and typically safe to consume. However, they are designed to be ingested and not vapourised, so questions are still to be answered, and scientists continue with their research.

One perceived advantage of vaping over smoking is that of cost. With vaping having a much larger initial cost to purchase the hardware, it is often seen as the more expensive option out of the two. However, there are plenty of reports and statistics available to confirm that vaping is much cheaper. You have a lot more control over the juice you’re using

with your vapouriser, having the ability to have one or two puffs whenever you need it. On the other hand, with vapourisers being a lot more accessible, it has been found that smokers transitioning to vaping will vape a lot more than they smoked.

The debate is bound to rumble on, and Scott Hammerton will be there to offer advice and a cheery welcome to the world of vaping. Why not use October as the month to finally give up those cigs and become a vaper instead?

What is Counselling?

R

ecently I was asked to give a talk on why counselling should replace mental health services. I initially accepted this invitation, and then when I got to thinking about what I was going to say, I started to think that the question was all wrong. Counselling shouldn’t replace mental health services, because it is part of mental health services.

However, when we hear the phrase ‘mental health’, what do we think? Schizophrenia, psychosis, bipolar, phobias, PTSD. Top-end issues, each with their own carefully attached label.

Or the ‘crazy’ person we see, wide-eyed weaving the streets who we think should be ‘locked up’. Or those with severe learning disabilities. Issues that are not ordinarily associated with counselling. And yet mental health covers everything from management of daily life to psychopathy. Counselling definitely fits in along that spectrum.

Over the last couple of years, the government has made promises about providing additional funding for mental health services, creating thousands of new jobs in the sector, including having a counsellor in every school. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry have fronted a mental health campaign. Sports stars, pop stars, stars of stage and screen, have all signed up to be involved, to encourage greater awareness of our mental health. And they are not just talking about the issues listed above.

They are encouraging us to engage with our day-to-day thoughts, feelings and emotions. That having a down day might be just that; we all have them and it’s okay to acknowledge it to someone. Or it might be because yesterday wasn’t great or something happened; that happens too, and it’s okay to acknowledge it to someone. Or it might be because we haven’t really talked about anything for years and we have ended up not being able to manage the everyday issues that are not usually a problem; the little things have become too much.

Talking about it is a positive thing to do, man or woman.

You might not have listened when your nan told you that “a problem shared was a problem halved”, but she was right.

Getting it out of your head, being heard, being listened to; that’s what counselling does. It’s not about being given a solution. It’s about finding out about you.

body changes. So, we are in a constant state of biological and psychological flux. And it can take a lot to manage that every day. So, whatever is going on in your mind, no matter how big or small it may seem, if it is there it is affecting you. If you want to let it out, whatever it might be, talk to a counsellor. We will listen.

I have been an addiction counsellor for ten years, mainly working using CBT, (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy), methods.

However, it is my belief that building a relationship, which is the basis of Person Centred Therapy, underpins any other form of counselling.

Having worked with many individuals over the years, I understand that underneath there are many and varied issues.

These include childhood trauma, abuse, bereavement, as well as not coping with life in general. If issues like that are retained, then they will continue to drive choices and decisions, which is likely to see a continuation of the behaviour that brought the client to counselling in the first place.

Bourne Galletly Medical Practice Expansion Update - Completion Due This Month!

Building works continue at pace, and we are looking at a handover date of Friday October 28th. All rooms are on their “second fix”, with sinks, cupboards, lighting and air conditioning being installed. The painters are also on-site and, with all this work in progress, the expansion project is now really taking shape.

Patients who have attended the surgery recently will have seen that parts of corridors have been reduced by boarding, as work has been completed to knock through to the ‘new-build area’. We apologise if this has caused any inconvenience.

Scaffolding has recently been erected around the “old” part of the building, formerly Dr. Galletly’s residence.

This is while a new roof is put into place which has been much-needed. We are very conscious of the need to keep the original house aspects intact. Having liaised closely with local planners, the new roof tiles are of the same appearance and style as the originals.

As we get ever closer to the opening, we are very pleased to announce a further addition to our team of GPs. Dr Caroline Manners will be joining the surgery on March 1st 2019, and will provide a further seven

clinical sessions per week. Currently a partner at Beechfield Medical Centre in Spalding, Dr Manners is an experienced local GP who brings many new and exciting specialist skills. On the arrival of Dr Manners, our GP compliment will have increased over the last eighteen months by an additional eighteen GP sessions per week.

We are also pleased to advise that, from October 1st, 2018, the Practice will be offering appointments until 8pm, from Mondays to Fridays. These appointments will be open to all local patients, irrespective of a patient’s registered practice, and is part of our pledge to provide better and more integrated GP services for the entire population of Bourne. Laos - natural beauty and intriguing culture

The mountainous, landlocked country of Laos is one of Southeast Asia’s greatest tourist destinations: an unassuming, friendly land full of natural beauty and interesting cultural sites.

The sleepy, languid nature of Laos’ capital Vientiane is symbolic of the easygoing, relaxed atmosphere that permeates the entire country. Unmissable tourist sites in Vientiane include Pha That Luang, a gorgeous Buddhist temple, and Buddha Park, housing a wonderfully bizarre collection of both Buddhist and Hindu religious edifices. However, the number one tourist destination in Laos remains the UNESCO World Heritage city of Luang Prabang. A mixture of authentic culture and modern convenience, in Luang Prabang monks in orange robes stroll past a curious mixture of traditional wooden houses and French colonial architecture, while a bustling cafe culture plays out on the banks of the Mekong and Nam Khan Rivers.

Best time to visit Laos Laos has a tropical climate, characterised by high temperatures all year round. The monsoon season, (May to October), is slightly cooler, but very wet. The best time to visit Laos is between November and March, although this is high tourist season and so accommodation prices may be higher than they are at other times of the year. Between March and May Laos experiences a very hot season, with daytime temperatures often reaching 104°F (40°C).

Recommended length of stay: 4-10 days to experience the diverse landscapes of Laos.

Just a few hundred metres from the Kuang Si waterfalls, take part in a cooking class that will allow you to discover the authentic taste of Lao cuisine. Taff’s Legacy Boosts Bloodwise Funds

Everyone Cheer for Connor and Tia! It has certainly been a summer to remember for Morton youngsters, Connor Ely, aged 14, and his sister, Tia, aged 8.

The £100 wad of cash is their reward for having been the lucky winners of our August, Seaside Treasure Hunt, competition. Connor attends Bourne Grammar School whilst Tia goes to Bourne Westfield.

Last month we featured the life of Taff Roberts, who sadly died on June 28th. In typically selfless and generous style, his wife Yvonne, family and friends raised a massive £2,000 at Taff’s ‘Celebration of Life’ on July 19th, in memory of a much-loved and respected man. Two months on, and a cheque was handed over to Dr Michael McGregor and his wife, Margaret, in aid of “Bloodwise”, (formerly Leukaemia Research), for whom the McGregors have tirelessly campaigned for decades, since having lost their own son, John, to the disease.

The Roberts family would like to say a huge thank you to everyone for having shown such generosity.

The competition proved to be our most popular yet with scores of youngsters dragging parents and grandparents round the various shops and businesses, in search of the clues. Connor and Tia were helped by their grandma, who I’m sure will be allowed to have a go on Connor’s X Box, (which came in part from his winnings), along with Tia’s jewellery kits.

Many thanks to everyone for having entered, and to the forty businesses whose windows were the focus of so much attention during those fabulously hot August days.

Kezia’s Coast to Coast Trek Nets an Enormous £1.5 K Two months ago, I set out on the Wainwright’s Coast to Coast Walk in an attempt to raise £500 for Great Ormond Street Hospital. I would like to personally thank everyone who either publicised my journey or donated to support me, and I am pleased to say that the total raised was over triple my original target!

During the fifteen-day trip, my dad, my uncle and myself travelled across the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales and the North Yorkshire Moors. On average, we walked eight hours a day and we certainly experienced everything the British weather had to offer - from being soaked with rain in the Lake District to being roasted by the sun in Yorkshire, we got a good taste of the outdoors! The trip did not go entirely smoothly, what with gaining blisters and breaking walking poles. However, it was a truly wonderful way to spend two weeks, knowing that all of our efforts were going towards helping Great Ormond Street, which helped motivate us so much. We met plenty of fellow walkers also raising money for their own causes along the way, and many of them donated, helping, alongside other contributions, to increase the total raised to over £1500.

I am beyond grateful for the vast sum of money raised by everyone who kindly donated. I have already been assured by Great Ormond Street that it is being put towards new equipment, research and facilities for patients’ parents. Ready for Hallowe’en on October 31st?

- What’s that all about then?

Hallowe’en is a night of celebration, every year, on October 31st. The word Hallowe’en is a shortening of “All Hallows' Evening”, (the day before All Hallows’ Day). Traditional activities include trick-or-treating, bonfires, costume parties, visiting "haunted houses" and carving pumpkins or “jack-o-lanterns”.

Hallowe’en has its origins in the ancient Celtic festival known as Samhain (pronounced "sah-win"). The festival of Samhain is a celebration of the end of the harvest season in Gaelic culture. Samhain was a time used by the ancient pagans to take stock of supplies and prepare for winter. The ancient Gaels believed that, on October 31, the boundaries between the worlds of the living and the dead overlapped and the deceased would come back to life and cause havoc, such as sickness or damaged crops. The festival would frequently involve bonfires. It is believed that the fires attracted insects to the area which in turn attracted bats to the area. These are additional attributes of the history of Hallowe’en.

“Trick-or-treating” is an activity for children on or around Hallowe’en, in which they proceed from house to house in costumes, asking for treats such as confectionery with the question, "Trick or treat?" The "trick" part of "trick or treat" is a threat to play a trick on the homeowner or his property, if no treat is given. Trick-or-treating is one of the main traditions of Hallowe’en. It has become socially expected that if you live in a neighbourhood with children, you should purchase treats in preparation for trick-or-treaters.

Newton’s Wine Bar and Tapas - One Year On and Going Strong

Keith and Gail Newton have certainly brought a much-needed facility to the town with their everpopular Newton’s Wine Bar and Tapas. Recently celebrating their first year anniversary at their North Street premises, the energetic husband and wife team are brimming with gratitude for the scores of loyal customers who have made it a remarkably successful debut year in the town.

At a time when the number of pubs in our area continues its sad decline, it was heartening to see the Newton family take on the challenge last year of bringing a touch of both France and of Spain to the streets of South Lincolnshire: France, clearly from the emphasis placed on the décor and the magnificent range and quality of the wines on offer, (supplied by Amps of Oundle); and Spain from the delicious tapas food which continues to impress and gather complimentary comments, both by word of mouth and also on Trip Advisor.

The Newtons’ twenty years living in France made them appreciate how the décor within a restaurant adds so much to the experience. The bar area includes slate and solid oak, with walls of neutral beige and terracotta. The comfortable seating for thirty adds to the overwhelming feeling of quality, which extends to a large and wellequipped terrace to the rear of the property. This fabulous summer has seen the terrace resembling some Mediterranean bistro, with the sunshine to match. Visiting recently, I was so impressed with the, now fully operational, large function room, (a.k.a. The Den / Back Bar), which could so easily be part of any typical French establishment, with its tiled floor and bare wooden walls.

This first year has proven to be a resounding success on a number of fronts. The week-ends 26

continue to be particularly busy, more often than not fully booked, well in advance.

Next, Keith and Gail are proud to show me their recently acquired Hygiene 5* Award from Lincolnshire County Council; and they are keen to point out the glut of favourable feedback on the Trip Advisor website for the wine bar, much of it focusing on the friendly staff and how welcome their customers are made to feel.

Looking ahead, Newton’s Wine Bar is introducing a Lebanese Menu Evening, (at £15.95 per head), every Wednesday throughout October.

This follows on from Keith and Gail’s daughter, Danielle, and her husband Karim, with children Lucy and Ryan, moving to Bourne from France.

Chef Karim brings twelve years’ experience in Toulouse and Bordeaux to Bourne, and we eagerly await an array of his Middle Eastern delicacies!

With Christmas soon upon us, Newton’s is about to make available their menu, which will be for Wednesdays and Thursdays throughout December, at £19.95 per head.

The Potting Shed Remember that the clocks go back at the end of this month, so make as much use as possible of daylight hours before winter sets in. This month sees jobs that are mainly clearing the plot ready for the winter months, plenty of digging and manuring.

Harvest or protect any remaining crops that are susceptible to frosts, and clear away any remaining debris and place on the compost heap: the larger the quantity, the better, as this helps the heap to warm up and accelerates the rotting process. It is advisable to shred or pulverize thick, woody stems such as sweetcorn, beans and brassicas, so that they decompose more quickly. Do not put any diseased foliage on the compost heap; burn or discard it.

Once the plot has been dug over, manure or fertilise it, and then cover the soil with plastic or weed suppressant for the winter, as this keeps the weeds at bay and, as it keeps the soil relatively warm, planting can start earlier in the spring. There is no need to dig in the manure as it will get drawn down into the soil over the winter months. An alternative to covering the soil is to plant green manures that will overwinter and can be dug in in the spring.

October is perfect for dividing large oversized crowns of rhubarb and also the perfect time for moving or planting new fruit bushes and trees. Bare-rooted trees will benefit from the warmth still left in the soil.

• Japanese over-wintering onion sets. Although large onion sets look stronger, small or medium ones are less likely to bolt in the spring.

• Last chance to transplant spring cabbages –be sure to net them to prevent pigeons eating the young leaves.

• Plant garlic if you haven’t already done so.

• Broad beans –early varieties should overwinter.

Other jobs for this month include:• Continue to earth up celery and leeks.

• Protect cauliflowers by bending a leaf over the curd.

• Finish pruning blackberries and raspberries.

• Keep removing yellow leaves from brassicas –leaving them on the ground risks spreading grey mould.

• If you haven’t already done so, earth up or stake, (or both), Brussels sprouts and sprouting broccoli plants.

• Pick all of the unripe tomatoes and put a few in a bag with a ripe banana –this gives off ethylene gas which speeds ripening.

• Cure pumpkins and squashes – cut and leave them to dry out in the sun; it hardens the skins and they will keep for longer.

• Cut back asparagus and artichoke foliage and compost.

Eckfords

One Year On Since the Move

I

t must always be a calculated risk when any business re-locates from a prime, town-centre site to another, even smaller premises, further up the same street, but not quite at the hub of activity. The Advantages of Lasting Powers of Attorney

By Richard Wood – Double & Megson Solictors During our lifetimes we all take for granted the ability to make important decisions for ourselves.

Sometimes, however, when we perhaps get older or are otherwise vulnerable, we may need to take advice on how to protect ourselves or our wishes.

There are two forms of Lasting Powers of Attorney, (LPA), which a person can enter into. The first, and the most popular, deals with Property and Financial Affairs, the second deals with Health and Welfare.

The point of an LPA is that, if we become vulnerable, we can create an LPA appointing others to take decisions for us called ‘Attorneys’. We can trust them to make decisions on our behalf if we find it difficult to get

out and about, make payments or otherwise make decisions because we are losing capacity. Until such time as a person does lose capacity, they can always cancel an LPA, and it does not stop the donor, (the person creating the LPA), from making decisions for themselves. If an LPA is not in place, the Court forms that have to be completed are more onerous and the Court Fees that have to be paid to the Office of Public Guardian are higher.

This can cause problems if urgent payments have to be made, and may involve an application to the Court.

The second form of LPA deals with Health and Welfare decisions.

Sometimes a person will want to appoint Attorneys to assist in decisions concerning Health and Welfare matters where life threatening decisions might have to be taken at a hospital for instance.

It is a very flexible and powerful application and can read almost any video or audio file you throw at it, as well as put to use to stream radio stations. In the words of the well-known song, (well almost) … “What a difference a month makes.” In August, Christine and I spent a week near Hunstanton enjoying the long hot summer and local food, whilst fighting off the never-ending supply of flies and wasps, equally, it seems, keen to feast on the fayre supplied. A month later and we were again in Hunstanton, at the first of the Autumn Civic Services, the weather noticeably different, the summer a distant memory. The service was preceded on the day earlier with our attendance at the successful Dyke Scarecrow Festival weekend. Both events were extremely enjoyable and my congratulations go to the Dyke Village Hall Committee for their efforts in staging the event.

I did not appreciate the significance of the political “ summer recess” until taking on the role of mayor, as it appears that August is the month when time is frozen in so far as events are concerned. From September onwards, the diary of activities ramps up, and I will report on these in future editions.

YOUR COUNCIL MATTERS ● Following concerns raised by residents, Bourne Town

Council has set up a working party to review car parking within the town following the changes at the M & S car park and its effect on surrounding streets. SKDC, who own both the South Street and the ‘post office car parks’, have deferred a review until at least 2019, but the Council’s intention is to see whether there are any ideas that can be pursued to ease the problem. If you have any thoughts, please notify the Council on the contact details below. Your views are appreciated. ● We have been endeavouring to agree, with the County, the positioning of speed indicator signs within the parish and, at long last, these have been agreed. The two signs have been ordered with an intention to implement usage in October. Fixing points will be placed around the town, with the signs being moved from time to time to, hopefully, prevent complacency. ● The Community Workshops set up to produce poppies for the World War 1 Project are gathering momentum with lots of brilliant work being achieved. The work will culminate with its installation within the Town Hall in the week prior to Armistice Day, November 11th. History

Discovering . . . The tattooed lady mystery

T

he workhouse which existed in Bourne during the 19th century was a dark and forbidding place, the last refuge for the desolate and destitute who faced a harsh regime of poor food and basic accommodation.

Sickness and suicide were commonplace among those who were forced to seek shelter although many had arrived there through unfortunate circumstances quite beyond their control. There were also bizarre occurrences that would not have been out of place in the pages of a Victorian detective novel such as the strange case of the tattooed lady which occurred 160 years ago.

The workhouse, or union as it was also known, was then situated in what is now St Peter’s Road and apart from the impoverished from town and district, tramps and vagrants who were passing through were also admitted and allowed to stay a few nights although they had to earn their keep by cleaning the dormitories or helping in the kitchens and garden, and in 1858 a woman named Elizabeth Powell found herself living there under such circumstances.

She was not in good health and died within a few days on October 30th but when the body was being examined by a doctor he made a remarkable discovery. The chairman of the Board of Guardians, Mr John Burgess, takes up the story: “It was found after her death that both her arms bore initials perforated with ink, and executed in

a beautiful manner”, he said. “As she was admitted into the union house as a casual, nothing could be correctly ascertained from her whether she had friends or not, or where her native place was. On her right arm was the following: W.B.R.H.N.G.E.W.R.S. and T. Whittingham C.5. Left arm: A.J.J.R.P.” Workhouse officials were baffled by the lettering and on being unable to find an explanation they posted a notice in the local newspapers describing what they had found, adding: “Should this paragraph be observed by the friends of the deceased, they may ascertain more particulars by communicating with the Master of the Bourne Union.”

Several weeks went by but there was no response and Elizabeth Powell was subsequently given a pauper’s burial at the town cemetery in South Road where she lies in an unmarked grave, the secret of the tattooed messages on her arms having died with her.

Many other inmates who died in obscurity are also buried there without headstones while the workhouse building has now gone, demolished in 2001 and the site has since been used as a car park by the printing firm, Warners Midlands plc.

BOURNE U3A – A GREAT CHOICE Loneliness and boredom can be risks for those individuals who finally have time on their hands.

They have longed for a chance to retire or reduce their working hours and break away from the routine. But reality can soon set in. The loss of a partner or a move to a new area can all be obstacles which might be proving difficult to overcome. Bourne U3A can make a difference.

The Association brings together semi-retired and retired people who are considering the chance to learn new skills, brush up on old pursuits, or simply meet like-minded people.

“There is no pressure – people can choose an activity which appeals to their particular interests.

There are really so many different groups that we believe each member can find something,” said Colin Peters, the Groups’ Coordinator.

And if there is nothing that appeals from the long list of activities, then members will often set up their own group – the latest being tap-dancing, while another is considering brewing. These activities will find their place alongside the traditional, from drawing and painting, music, handicrafts, arts and speaking French to the unusual – clay pigeon shooting, cryptic crosswords, bird-watching and aviation history.

The Performing Arts for Fun Group is where members can hone acting skills or work backstage. In the meantime, other members will be planning trips out to the theatre, discovering different eating places 54

or joining in the Supper Group. The Walking Groups bring together members who might enjoy a shorter stroll or head off on a more challenging trek. The Ladies Fun and Exercise Group is another option, while snooker and green bowls will test hand- and eye-coordination.

Others might opt to exercise the mind through the groups for reading, creative writing or discussion.

The Open Day on Saturday October 27th runs from 12 noon to 4pm at The Corn Exchange, Bourne.

Chairperson, Pat Howes, who plays a key role in ensuring new members make the most of the opportunities, said: “We are really excited about welcoming new people. The Open Day will give them the chance to see for themselves what U3A has to offer, and then in the coming weeks we will be able to talk with each of them to make sure they find the right activities for them.”

What is U3A? The University of the Third Age, (U3A) movement is a unique and exciting organisation which provides, through its one thousand associations across the country, life-enhancing and life-changing opportunities. Retired and semi-retired people come together and learn together, not for qualifications, but for its own reward: the sheer joy of discovery.

Members share their skills and life experiences: the learners teach and the teachers learn, and there is no distinction between them.

ourne Footlights has chosen to present ‘Caught in the Net’, a fast-moving, traditional farce by Ray Cooney, for its November production.

John Smith, a bigamist taxi driver, has successfully kept his two families in different parts of London, happy and blissfully unaware of each other for over fifteen years. However, his teenage children, a girl from one family and a boy from the other, have met on the Internet and are anxious to meet in person since they have so much in common: name, surname and taxi-driving dad! Keeping them apart plunges John into a hellhole of his own making.

His lodger, Stanley, could be a saviour, but he is about to go on holiday with his decrepit old father who turns up thinking he is already at the guest house. The situation spirals out of control as John juggles outrageously with the truth.

Directed by Maureen Berkes, this hilarious comedy runs at Bourne Corn Exchange on Wednesday 7th, Thursday 8th and Friday 9th November 2018. Doors open at 7pm and the performance begins at 7.30pm. The Great Pretenders Over the past twelve months The Great Pretenders have been going from strength to strength, busy playing pubs, parties, weddings and festivals across the county. “We’ve got to a point now where we’re enjoying it so much that we want to take it to the next level. To be honest, we want to be the best party band in the area,” explains lead singer, Mark Bishop. And with a new website, a professional look and a growing repertoire of party songs, bookings are coming in thick and fast. “We already have three weddings booked for 2019, as well as some big private functions over the next couple of months. It’s going really well,” Mark adds.

From Elvis and The Beatles through to Bruno Mars and The Killers, the band is a highly entertaining and versatile local ‘weddings and functions band’. They are well-known locally for getting the crowd up, singing and dancing in no time.

Don’t Fear the Vet!

M

any of us have a fear of the dentist and our pets may feel the same about a visit to the vet. Our dogs and cats are emotional creatures and most of the “bad” behaviours we see are due to an emotional response, such as fear or excitement. Owners coming to the veterinary surgery can also feel quite nervous as they may be worried about the outcome of a consultation, and this can transmit to their pet and influence them.

Individual pets will react differently to the situation they find themselves in, and often react in ways that are surprising to their owner.

Recognising this and preparing for it is something we can all respond to and so improve the welfare of our pets.

Most dog owners know that their dog behaves differently when on a lead and when not. When greeting other dogs off the lead, they are

much more relaxed and confident.

On the lead they often lunge and bark at other dogs. In a waiting room this is intensified in a smaller area and can become very stressful for them. They may be better waiting in their own space outside, or in the car, until the appointment is called.

However, some dogs are very relaxed and happy, and their body language can help other dogs to relax too.

Cats try to escape from stressful situations and hide. Covering a cat basket with a towel will provide a dark, quieter zone. Cats in hospital wards are always given a box to hide in so they feel more secure. If it is particularly noisy in the waiting room, removing a cat to a separate zone will reduce stress.

Pheromone products can calm animals and using a pheromone collar on dogs or spraying a small

rag of pheromone and attaching it to a cat’s cage will be useful. Again, we use this on cats in wards to make them feel safe and secure. Often, there are separate cat clinics for those not used to noisy dogs, and these have proved very useful at reducing anxiety in cats.

Of course, there are a variety of medications that can be used to reduce stress and anxiety, but they must be used with care or they can make the situation worse for some pets, so it is certainly worth discussing these with your vet.

It has to be said, that most animals enjoy their visit to the vet. This is usually because their initial visits as puppies and kittens have been fun.

They get lots of fuss and attention and often get a reward too, and if we make the experience positive at this early stage, then hopefully, it will be positive at all their future visits.

allowe’en is great fun for youngsters, getting dressed up and going ‘trick or treating’ and the like. However, not everyone finds it quite that exciting, and there will be people, for example, the elderly, who do not wish to be disturbed or can in fact find the whole thing quite frightening. As a general rule of thumb, those with decorations outside their house, it is fine to call in. If not, then it is best to leave them alone. For those people who do choose to go ‘trick or treating’, please do so responsibly; pranks like throwing eggs and flour could be deemed criminal damage and may result in you being arrested. Some shops won’t even sell eggs and flour to under-16s in the run up to the day. If you’re worried at all about Hallowe’en, then you can pop into the police station and get a poster that you can display, asking people not to ‘trick or treat’ at your house.

It is also approaching the time for Bonfire Night. This can be a wonderful time to watch some fireworks and enjoy a toasty bonfire, but make sure to do it safely. Children should never be allowed to handle or set off fireworks, and should be closely supervised when using sparklers etc. You can only buy fireworks, (including sparklers), from registered sellers for private use on these dates: ● October 15th - November 10th. ● December 26th - 31st. ● Three days before Diwali and Chinese New Year.

At other times you can only buy fireworks from licensed shops.

The law says you must not set off or throw fireworks, (including sparklers), in the street or other public places.

You must not set off fireworks between 11pm and 7am, except for:

● Bonfire Night, when the cut-off is midnight. ● New Year’s Eve, Diwali and Chinese New Year, when the cut-off is 1am.

You can be fined up to £5,000 and imprisoned for up to six months for selling or using fireworks illegally. You could also get an on-the-spot fine of £90.
