Introduction
Welcome to Your November Issue. It’s getting closer by the day, and I’m not talking about the ticklish thirty days ahead for us ladies, as some of our chaps let loose that moustache once more during “Movember”. No, I’m talking turkey, trees, tinsel and trimming-up, as the whole wonderful Christmas season gathers momentum once more. This month’s issue features some local restaurants and hostelries offering all manner of attractions for the festive weeks ahead, so remember to book early for your special events. I had the good fortune recently to attend the Mayor of Bourne’s Charity Dinner at the Corn Exchange and be part of what was a marvellous evening of entertainment, excellent food and an impressive boosting of Mayor David Mapp’s accumulated charity pot for his very deserving, chosen cause, Dementia Support South Lincs.

The following lines are taken from a Thomas Hood poem and seem about right, now that the brilliant summer of 2018 is now just a distant memory: No sun - no moon! No morn - no noon No dawn - no dusk - no proper time of day. ……. No shade, no shine, no butterflies, no bees, No fruits, no flowers, no leaves, no birds! November! Never mind, there’s always plenty to cheer us all up, whatever the weather, and this month’s issue presents you with its customary cornucopia of information, advice, opinion and the occasional one-liner. (I recently swapped our bed for a trampoline – my wife nearly hit the roof!) What is particularly thought-provoking this month, of course, is the centenary of the ending of World War 1. Throughout our area on November 11th, thousands of people will take time out to remember those who have, (during that conflict and several others since 1918), given their lives, in order that we can live ours in peace. We will remember them. Enjoy the read!

Preparing for the Party Season
by Claire Saunders, Renu - Health, Beauty & Fitness
I
t seems no sooner have we packed our beachwear away, than we are seeing if the zip will still do up on our little black dress for the party season ahead. I was reading some research recently that showed women spend more time preparing for the annual Christmas party season than for any other event in the year – including a friend’s wedding, New Year’s Eve, birthday parties or even a hot date. I couldn’t help wondering if I have got something wrong over the years? In my experience, Christmas is the season for a woman to be busy, but not necessarily with her own personal appearance. Christmas shopping, gift wrapping, food preparation, house decorating, school concerts and greeting card writing are all added to our “to do list”, along with additional socialising. So, if you want to be a Christmas cracker this year, the secret is to plan ahead! There is always time to make a difference, but you need to plan it in your diary. Start with a regular exfoliation and moisturise when you are in the shower in the morning, to keep your skin glowing
and make sure it’s ready for a lastminute spray tan if you need one. Keep a good quality cuticle oil by the bed and put it on your fingers and toes each night, to encourage healthy nourished nails that will look good naturally if necessary. Get your hair and beauty treatments booked in around your social diary now. Salons get particularly busy in the lead-up to Christmas, so if you are not organised you may struggle to get a last-minute appointment. Start your day with hot water and fresh lemon and try to drink plenty
of water to keep your skin clear, nails strong and manage your weight successfully. A sensible eating and exercise regime over a six week period has been proven to drop inches from your waistline and hips. Our “Little Black Dress Challenge” is the perfect way to get in shape with other like-minded women in the lead-up to Christmas. You are given weekly tips and encouragement, and a special thirty minute workout routine to fit in with your busy lifestyle. If you would like to know more about our little black dress challenge, please call us on 01778 423923.
The Little Black Dress Challenge is starting NOW! Six weeks of help, encouragement and weekly advice. “I lost seven pounds, and six inches from my waist and hips in the little black dress challenge. I couldn’t believe it!”
Unlimited use of our gym and studio classes. Two personal training sessions. ALL FOR ONLY £64.99. Call to book your place.

Toft Country House Hotel and Golf Club The winds of change are blowing through a popular leisure and hospitality facility just outside of Bourne, with a new leaseholder at Toft Country House Hotel and Golf Club. Tom Munt (36) has long held a dream of being in charge of his own golf course which has now been realised, since early in September. A ‘First’ in ‘Leisure Management and Golf Studies’ was followed by fifteen years gaining experience in management of hotels and golf clubs, latterly at Saffron Walden Golf Club. Meeting Tom, with his clarity of thought and charming, friendly manner, left me in no doubt that he is aware of the challenges ahead, (“The hotel is looking a bit tired”, he concedes), but he appears determined to make it a success. Starting in the new year, and using local interior designer, Rebecca Undrell at Harland House, eight of the hotel’s twenty en-suite bedrooms will be part of the first refurbishment phase. The restaurant, under the auspices of Head Chef, Rachael Horner, will also be coming under the spotlight, as changes will be taking place. Early November will see the new winter menu, created with Rachael’s experienced eye, with emphasis placed on locally-sourced quality produce at a competitive price. Toft House Hotel has long been synonymous with its function facilities, and The George Suite continues to provide a most popular venue for wedding receptions, parties and Christmas gatherings. Events Coordinator, Laura Niblock, oversees this successful aspect of the Toft experience, whilst Tom is fortunate to be able to rely on Zoltan Komives’ expertise as his Hotel Manager.
There needs to be a synergy between all branches of a business like the one that Tom and his family, (wife Laura and daughters, Grace and Emily), have moved into. He is anxious that the Golf Club part of the operation and the Hotel and the Function Room, (on the other side of the main road!) are seen as complementary to each other, and will look to reinforce that connection, wherever possible. Tom rues the fact that Golf Club membership has declined in recent years, and will strive his utmost to return it to its former glory. Swan Golf Designs, an Essex-based firm of architects with international credentials, are creating a fiveyear development plan for the course. Before that, however, Tom has already appointed another Assistant Greenkeeper, Darryn LLoyd, to accompany Head Greenkeeper, James Dair’s existing team, in keeping the course in pristine condition. One of its many benefits must be its fantastic all-year-round playing conditions. As there is such excellent drainage for all seasons, Toft is one of the few courses in this area to never need temporary “winter greens”. “Toft is a fantastic little club”, Tom enthuses, pointing out the fact that the ladies have just won the Lincolnshire Ladies Golf Association Handicap League Final for the second year running, such a remarkable feat with such a small membership! “A big part of the appeal of golf at Toft is that it is just such a relaxing place to be,” Tom explains. “You get to play a very good course, have a bit of fun, and feel both welcomed, and also that you’re getting great value for your membership.”

Health
Freedom from Stress, Anxiety and Panic Attacks Anxiety can build up over a long period of time without us even realising it, or it can come on suddenly as a result of something such as illness or a change of circumstances, for instance. Some people who’ve been fully in control of their lives suddenly find they can’t cope in their daily life. “Even the simplest task can be overwhelming at times.” Anxiety and stress can manifest itself in many ways: nervousness; panic attacks; insomnia, overly worrying about something that may never happen, etc. It can have a crippling effect by bringing on a range of symptoms such as depression, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), skin complaints, or negative patterns such as over-eating, drinking, smoking etc. If allowed to go unaddressed, stress and anxiety can change lives for the worst. At least one person in ten experiences panic attacks which are often triggered by a stressful or anxious event. A panic attack happens when you experience a sudden onset of intense physical and psychological symptoms. Panic attacks can occur for no apparent reason, or a set of circumstances can bring about an attack. You might experience an overwhelming sense of fear, dread, anxiety or apprehension. There are often physical symptoms accompanying these feelings, including a change in breathing pattern, sweating, nausea, heart palpitations, rapid heart rate, trembling, or even difficulty when swallowing. While they are frightening, it is unlikely that they will cause physical harm, but the self-perpetuating thought of having one stops us from doing the things we want to do or need to do, causing more stress, and increasing the potential of having a panic attack.
“The greatest weapon against stress is our ability to choose one thought over another.” The good news is that Solution Focused Hypnotherapy has been shown to be a very effective treatment for panic attacks, reducing the frequency in a short period of time, or sustained treatment will often result in them disappearing altogether. Hypnotherapy reduces underlying levels of anxiety, giving you greater control and reducing the emotional arousal. Hypnotherapy works with the subconscious brain templates, and makes suggestions in a beneficial and positive way to make positive changes happen in the subconscious. Hypnotherapy allows guided relaxation, showing a preferred future and, because the subconscious part of the brain, (the part that’s in charge of our reactions), doesn’t understand the difference between imagination and reality, the guided relaxation starts to bring calm and control back into our lives. You will learn how to prevent negative stress, how to identify increased levels of stress, and how to deal with the situation and how to prevent it reaching debilitating levels in a positive and responsible way. Whatever the cause of stress, anxiety or panic attacks, the treatment is tailored to the individual. “Nothing diminishes anxiety faster than action.” If your stress, anxiety and panic attacks are out of control, contact Christine who will be pleased to help.
If you would like to book an appointment or find out more about hypnotherapy, contact Christine on: 0780 9690 964 or contact@beardwoodhypnotherapy.co.uk

Don’t Let Your Workstation Damage Your Health!
M
any day-to-day aches and pains can be attributed to an ill-fitting ‘workstation’. As osteopaths, we see a range of posture-induced problems every day. The way these present varies from person to person, but some familiar symptoms can include: difficulty or stiffness turning your head, which you may first notice perhaps when trying to reverse the car; heavy tired arms with pain around the tip of the shoulder extending towards the elbow; sometimes, poor work postures can end up with you hunching forwards, producing mid back ache and aggravating your lower back too, so you find it harder to get out of the chair and straighten up.
Some Postural-Savvy Tips. Tip 1 - Get ready for the day: Take a moment to think about your work posture and workstation layout. It will take less than a minute – which is nothing compared to the hours you’ll spend sat there. Use a post-it note to remind yourself each day. Tip 2 – Check your posture: • Does the chair’s lumbar support fit the curve of your back? If not, consider an additional ‘slide in’ lumbar support, or try a rolled-up towel placed into the small of your back. These can really prevent you slouching. • Adjust your chair and screen height so that the top of your screen is level with your eyes. • Make sure your feet can be placed flat on the floor. If not, get a footrest. • If your chair has arms, adjust their height so that your elbows and forearms rest upon them lightly. Tip 3 – Organise your desk: • COMPUTER SCREEN - Should be directly in front, with no need to twist your body or neck to look at it. • KEYBOARD - Should be directly in front of you and far enough away to allow most of your forearms onto the desk

too. MOUSE - Should be in easy reach. Keep frequently-used items nearby to avoid repetitive over-reaching. • TELEPHONE - Should be positioned on the same side as your dominant hand to avoid over-reaching. If you use a handset regularly, consider a hands-free kit, and never clutch the phone between your ear and shoulder! Tip 4 – Give yourself a screen break! Try and drag yourself away from the screen for at least five minutes each hour. Find an activity that gets you onto your feet and moving about. Tip 5 – Motion - If you can’t get out-and-about, then try simple stretches whilst sat at your desk. Stretching is a low impact method of exercise which increases blood flow, flexibility, tone and your general performance – it will increase both physical and mental productivity, and reduce those desk-related aches and pains. If any of this sounds familiar and you would like some help towards fixing the problem, or perhaps just more information, please contact the practice and we’ll be happy to help.

Remembering World War 1 War poet, Wilfred Owen’s ‘Anthem for Doomed Youth’, written in 1917, includes the haunting image of soldiers “who die as cattle”, whilst facing the “monstrous anger of the guns” and the “stuttering rifles’ rapid rattle”. Later in the poem, he refers to the “bugles calling for them (the soldiers in the trenches of Northern France) from sad shires”. As we look back, 100 years on from the ending of World War 1, we can think of the families left behind, as their menfolk answered the call to arms, and think just what the conflict must have meant for those ordinary people in ordinary places like Bourne and its surrounding villages, with the bugles sounding in our own shire – Lincolnshire. The sheer scale of the casualties alone is one of the most humbling features of this “war to end all wars”. We have heard of literally millions of deaths - British and Commonwealth, German, French, Russian and many other nationalities caught up in the conflict. However, when we look much nearer to home, it soon makes us realise just what this war meant to small towns and villages hereabouts. It is estimated that in Bourne alone, with its population of 4,343, (1911 census), around 250 men left the area to fight … and a staggering 46% failed to return! In almost every church in the vicinity, there are poignant memorials which illustrate just how universal was the devastation wreaked on communities, large and small. The following list gives just a brief indication of how widespread were the effects of the war. The figures have been drawn from the actual memorials found in each of the village churches mentioned. However, it is likely that the true death toll was much higher, as research completed after the memorials had been erected often revealed discrepancies:
Braceborough : 1 death Carlby : 7 deaths Deeping St. James : 44 deaths (and a further 9 not included on the memorial)
Aslackby : 11 deaths
Folkingham : 8 deaths
Baston : 24 deaths
Greatford : 4 deaths
Billingborough : 18 deaths
Kirkby Underwood : 5 deaths
Lines from “For the Fallen” by Laurence Binyon, written in 1914: ‘They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them.’

Top Five Lesser-known Destinations in Europe
Clare Lockett
Travel Counsellor
Europe is a lot more than just the ‘big-hitters’, such as Paris, Rome, Berlin or Amsterdam. Here, we share our top picks for smaller destinations that pack a big punch … without the crowds! Siena, Italy Siena is often overshadowed by its neighbours, Florence and Pisa, and by the rolling Tuscan countryside with its famous vineyards. But don’t discount this pint-sized city – it’s one of Italy’s most beautiful, with honey-coloured streets and wonderful restaurants. If you head there on July 2nd or August 16th, you’ll also see the grand Piazza del Campo transformed into the arena for the famous biannual Palio horse race.
the town from the top of Town Hall Tower, stroll along the tops of its walls, visit Little Square and learn all about the city’s history on a Night Watchman’s Tour.
Delft, The Netherlands Just 9km south of The Hague, this canal-threaded city – a ‘mini-Amsterdam’ of sorts – is the ultimate Dutch day-trip destination. Famous as the hometown of Golden Age artist, Johannes Vermeer, it also boasts the Royal crypts and white-and-blue Delft earthenware. Visitors can still tour the workshops where this hand-painted pottery has been made since the 16th century. Otherwise, wander this serene, timeless city and stop for a canal side coffee to watch the world go by. Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany A short drive from Munich, Nuremberg and Stuttgart, this is one of Germany’s most charming destinations. Spend a day just wandering through its well-preserved medieval old town, which still has intact its 14th-century walls. Look over

Krujë, Albania One of Albania’s most historic cities was the birthplace of Albanian national hero, Skanderbeg, who in the 15th century ruled over the region and made Krujë one of the most important centres in the resistance to the Ottoman Empire. Visit the Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg Museum inside Krujë Castle to learn about Albania’s history and wander around the Old Bazaar of Krujë to pick up some souvenirs. Cesky Krumlov, Czech Republic Lined with a mix of Renaissance and Baroque homes, this unspoilt medieval marvel with its UNESCO-listed Old Town is a maze of twisting alleys, built around the extensive Cesky Krumlov Castle complex, which you can visit. Make sure to stop by the Gypsy Pub, too – one of the town’s liveliest places; it has live music and a vast selection of beer, (appropriately for this nation with the world’s highest beer consumption per head). If you would like to find out more or visit one of these fascinating destinations, contact Clare today.

Matters Sweet Sensations I’m sure all of our readers will join us in wishing Alison, the charming, smiling lady behind the counter at one of Bourne’s favourite shops, Sweet Sensations, a successful course of treatment and a speedy recovery. Sadly, for all sweettoothed residents of the area, the shop will be closed, as Alison undertakes the treatment to fight her cancer, but when she returns, there will be no stopping them seeking out all the goodies!

Bourne Film Producer Thirsty for “Blood” TV Success Bourne man Jonathan Fisher (29) is currently enjoying success in the TV drama industry and is very much looking forward to the launch of his new six-part psychological thriller, “Blood”. After leaving Oxford University in 2011, where he read Russian, Jonathan has been working in the television drama industry on a range of different projects. He was Head of Development at Dominic Minghella’s company, Island Pictures, where production credits included “The Scapegoat” for ITV. Most recently, he executive produced the twentieth anniversary series of longrunning ITV detective series, “Midsomer Murders”, and before that, he had worked as Script Editor on the final series of Lewis.
D I S C O V E R I N G
With a talented cast, headed by Adrian Dunbar, (“Line of Duty”), “Blood” was filmed in
Bourne
Dublin and premiered on Ireland’s Virgin Media One channel at the beginning of October. As well as it featuring on Acorn TV in the USA, we will be able to watch the series here in the UK as part of Channel 5’s new venture into high quality drama. Although having a very busy schedule, Jonathan often returns to visit his family home in Bourne where he spent his childhood. He remains a Lincoln City season ticket holder, and he pursued his love of football by regularly playing for many years in a Bourne Town Juniors side. Whilst at school he spent time as a reporter for the Bourne Local, often writing articles featuring local amateur dramatics and also as match reporter for Bourne Town FC. (Sounds like a case of “Local” man makes good! – Ed.)

The concert will begin at 7.30pm, and tickets range from £15 to £20 (unreserved seating). Crown Jewellers Bid Farewell Cathy Powell and husband Russ are soon to return to their roots in the North West, having put more than just a sparkle into the Bourne retail landscape for the past decade. Their popular shop on North Street closes at the end of October, and here she bids farewell: “We would like to say a fond farewell to all of our customers at Crown Jewellers. It has been an absolute pleasure to serve, assist and support this wonderful community over the past ten years. Bourne is the friendliest of places to live and work, with a community spirit like no other. Our customers have become our friends; we have shared in your happiest of occasions and have offered our sincerest, heartfelt support when life has dealt you blows. We all feel privileged to have served you in our little shop. The love that our customers have given us over the last two months has been overwhelming and we will take that love with us on our journey. We wish you all the very best for the future, and the wonderful town of Bourne will be in our hearts always.” n ov e m be r 2 0 1 8

To meet with any form of professional can often be a stressful and anxious experience, and that certainly was the feeling of Mrs X as she called to see us recently for the first time. Her plan was to review her pensions which she described as many in number, adding that she didn’t understand them, and that she certainly did not know how to take any money out of them! Both she and her husband have experienced ill health recently, and this had heightened her need to consider retirement planning. Her goal is that they should enjoy the proceeds of all their efforts before it is too late. In particular, the plan to finally take those holidays they had

D I S C O V E R I N G
Our goal in meeting with her was initially to put her mind at rest. We spent some time discussing their planning, and in particular, attained a thorough understanding of their goals.
As a full review takes time, we are still in the process of completing our research for this client, but we are certain that she left our office feeling very relaxed and at ease with the thought that we had the situation under control, and that she and her husband could now focus on enjoying the finer things in life.
As is very often the case when a client starts to openly talk about their finances, they recall many of the smaller details that perhaps they didn’t feel are relevant; a ‘small pension’ with a company they worked for a long time ago or a pension with a company they only worked with for a few years. In this case, the client had both of these, which could ultimately form an integral part of their retirement planning.
If the above scenario seems familiar, and you keep putting off seeing a professional, then rest assured we have a team of friendly and experienced Financial Planners who will work with you to start making you feel relaxed about your own financial landscape. Gardening
The Potting Shed November is not the best of months to be spending time outside, as the days are getting shorter and the weather is on the decline. However, time spent in the vegetable plot now will pay off in the spring and make your job easier. Weeds never seem to stop growing but will slow down considerably over the winter months, so it is a good idea to clear them now so that they don’t get a head start in spring. Make sure that the plot is clear of summer crops; don’t leave them to rot, as this can increase the risk of disease and harbour unwanted pests. November is a good time to give the soil some attention; if you wait any longer the soil could be waterlogged or too cold. Once you have cleared the weeds and any old crops, fork the soil over and add compost or manure to help replace nutrients in the soil. I then cover the area with either weed suppressant or plastic, which will keep the weeds at bay and the soil warmer for planting in the spring.
Another important task for November is pruning, as fruit trees and bushes have shed their leaves and are dormant for the winter; also remove any netting from fruit cages to allow the birds to eat insects and eggs. Bare-rooted fruit trees, bushes and canes are also dormant and therefore, now is the time to plant them whilst the ground is not too wet or cold. Other tasks for this month include:• Propagate rhubarb crowns by lifting and dividing in to smaller pieces, planting at the same depth in their new position. • Plan the crop rotation for next year. Planting one group of vegetables in the same ground, year after year, increases the risk of a build-up of disease. There are websites that provide planners; one such example is http://gardenplanner.suttons.co.uk • Dismantle bean canes, if you haven’t already, as leaving them in the ground

will cause the bases to rot. • Leaf mould makes good mulch and at this time of year there are plenty to be had. You can easily make a cage to contain the leaves using four stakes and stapling chicken wire around them. Just throw the leaves in and leave them for a year to rot down. Or put them together with a bit of soil into a black plastic bag - make a few small holes. • Start to harvest winter cabbage, Brussels sprouts, leeks and parsnips; wait until after a frost for the parsnips, as the frost encourages the sugars which give parsnips their sweetness. • Plant garlic cloves, early “overwintering” broad beans, (either in the ground or in pots), peas, shallots and onions. • Prepare a runner bean trench for all of your kitchen waste.

Newton Fallowell Under Ne Jason Treadwell has brought over a decade of experience with Newton Fallowell with him as he recently bought the Bourne branch, and became Managing Director of the Market Place-based operation. This ambitious father of four has worked in estate agency throughout Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire and Rutland for the majority of his working life, and previously ran two large independent agencies. He originally began his career with Newton Fallowell in Grantham in 2007, before opening offices in Stamford in 2014 and then in Oakham, two years later. The team which Jason has been assembling at the Bourne branch combines many years of experience from some with the youthful exuberance and enthusiasm of others. Sales Manager, Nikki Touze, for example, has seen fifteen years in the Grantham and Stamford offices. “I can’t imagine being in any other industry,” she declares, “and I just love being able to help people with sometimes quite stressful transactions.”
Richard Marfe and Rebecca Sitch, on the other hand, are both relatively new to the industry. Nevertheless, both of these negotiators are proving to be a considerable asset to the firm. Keen sportsman and passionate sailor, Richard can call upon an extensive knowledge of this area, having studied at Bourne Academy. Rebecca, meanwhile has spent a year working in residential sales and lettings with a local estate agency, before joining Newton Fallowell. Senior Valuer, Philip Bell, has been almost two decades in the industry, having gained experience in Huntingdon, St Ives, Stamford and Spalding in that time. His local knowledge is a valuable asset to buyers and vendors alike, and he has always maintained the highest of standards for customer service. Philip is able to provide sound advice on a broad range of property topics, and

Working her way up through property management to Lettings Manager, Kate has a passion for exceeding client and customer service expectations. The Bourne branch has seen tremendous growth over the last few years, and offers in-house mortgage advice, alongside sales, lettings, surveying, conveyancing and investment advice. At this point in the year, the clocks have gone back and we start to think more about winter – and the ideal time to get into the habit of keeping an eye on an older friend or neighbour. The winter months can be lonely and isolating for those who are less mobile; a knock at the door after dark can be frightening, and cold callers on the phone can leave the recipient feeling vulnerable. The situation isn’t helped by the many rogue traders who try to tout for work in the local area, often suggesting to the home owner that a roof or guttering are in need of repair before winter sets in. This can lead to vulnerable people parting with their cash and getting nothing but shoddy work and a huge dent in their savings in return. Then there are phone scams, which may on the surface seem to be less intrusive, but are equally as dangerous. These can range from callers claiming to be from companies to check non-existent faults on your computer, banks claiming to check your account details and even so-called medical companies, suggesting the need for mobile aids, from electric chairs to stair lifts. Share these tips with family and friends, and older relatives:

With winter on the way, maybe now is a good time to join a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme within your community. Safe Local Trades, covering the PE Postcode area, has worked with many local Neighbourhood Watch groups over the past decade. It has been proven that areas which operate a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme are less likely to be targeted by criminals, rogue traders and distraction burglars. More information can be found at https://www.safelocaltrades.com/consumers/advice/ your-neighbourhood-neighbourhoodwatch Meanwhile, don’t be fooled by rogue or cowboy traders making an offer that seems too good to be true – as it most probably is!

Balancing Employment Rights By Richard Wood – Double & Megson Solictors It is fundamental to a Contract of Employment that each party has mutual trust and confidence in one another. Should that break down from an employer’s perspective, it can lead to disciplinary proceedings against the employee. From the employee’s point of view, it can result in a grievance being made. As a minimum, it could lead to an employee leaving for a new position elsewhere. There is an ACAS code of practice that should be used to guide the parties as to good practice. If a grievance meeting is requested, it must be arranged with reasonable notice for the employee, who has the right to be accompanied either by a colleague or trade union representative, if they are in a union. There is a right to an appeal. Should that prove unsuccessful, the employee should then take very urgent advice as to their rights. If an employer calls a disciplinary hearing, this must also be with
reasonable notice, and allowing the employee to be accompanied. Should the employee be suspended, it should generally be on full pay. If the outcome goes against the employee, they may appeal. Again, there is the right to be accompanied and the hearing must be with reasonable notice. Any employee wanting to make a claim, usually (subject to exceptions) must do so within three months of the incident
or issue that they are to complain about. To make a claim at the Employment Tribunal, the employee must first commence the ACAS Compulsory Early Conciliation, which suspends the three months. If that does not result in a settlement, the employee must issue proceedings within what is left of the three months and any days ACAS have added to that period. Advice should always be taken on the calculation of the limitation, as it is not straightforward.

Seven Reasons Why Bourne Buy- to -Let Landlords Shouldn’t be Criticised
There is no escaping the fact that over the last couple of decades, the rise in the number of buy-to-let properties in Bourne has been nothing short of extraordinary. Many in the “left leaning” press have spoken of a broken nation; the fact many youngsters are unable to buy their first home, with the rise of a new cohort of younger renters, who have been dubbed ‘Generation Rent’, as landlords hoover up all the properties for their buy-to-let property empires. But are the 292 Bourne portfolio,buy-to-let landlords at fault? Well in 1997, buy-to-let mortgages were introduced, and this is where the
problem started. Secondly, in the early 2000s, those same building societies and banks were relaxing their lending criteria, with self-certification (i.e. you did not need to prove your income), mortgages eight times their annual salary, and very helpful interest-only mortgage deals which helped to keep repayments inexpensive. Thus, we got the perfect storm conditions for an eruption in the Bourne private rented sector. Commercially speaking, purchasing a Bourne property has been undoubtedly the best thing anyone could have done with their hard-earned savings since 1998, where property values in Bourne have risen by 260.89%!

MESH Network Price Fall Brings Affordable Wide Coverage WiFi Solution for the Home by Taff Lovesey, Lites PC Mesh wi-fi is beginning to take off with many of the networking companies releasing new mesh networks (802.11s). This method of networking relies on multiple wireless devices being used together in a grid, or mesh, coverage pattern to provide reliable and high performance wireless networks. This can be of benefit where the home, or office, suffers from poor wireless zones due to distance or environment. By linking the matched devices in a mesh network, wireless signals can reach to those dim and dark wireless corners of the home.
very expensive, but competition and technology improvements have led to a big price drop, with this three dish BT set now selling at under £170. For many homes this level of coverage will be unnecessary but for those living in larger homes, or older homes with thick, solid walls, mesh technology could be a good direction to take to address Wi-Fi coverage around the house (or office).
The ‘first’ device connects to the main router, and then an app, (Android or iOS), is used to help set up the two ‘sister’ devices to map out your mesh network, all handled in a user-friendly manner through your mobile phone.
Most of the main network device manufacturers have released their own versions, including an excellent offering from BT called BT Whole Home Wi-Fi. When I first covered Mesh networks eighteen months ago they were still

Current tests show that these networks are easier to configure than a home plug adapter network, more reliable and offering better ‘across device’ performance. Apart from providing a reliable Wi-Fi network, many of the devices also provide a wired connection, which is handy for connecting static PCs, TVs, set top boxes and such like.

Mayor
Words from the Mayor David Mapp
Autumn........the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness is upon us, thankfully, without a bang. The sporting year has seen England reach the football World Cup semi-finals; our cricketers beat the world’s number one team, India; and Europe win back the Ryder Cup with a scintillating performance in France. Whatever your views on Brexit, the coming together of golfers from around the continent reminds us of our link to our near neighbours. Sport does have a way of bonding us together whilst politics seems to create so much division. Whilst Christine soaked up the sun during a week away with the girls, I attended a Battle of Britain service in Stamford and, upon her return, we attended the opening of the Peterborough fair, a lovely evening dinner with the Lions, and celebrated the successes of the army cadets at their awards night. At the time of writing, we have just enjoyed a great Civic Ball at the Corn Exchange which
(seventy years). The couple worked tirelessly for good causes over the years within Bourne, including The Butterfield, Digby Court and also the British Heart Foundation.Ted is now a resident of Digby Court.
achieved over £800 towards my chosen charity, Dementia Support South Lincs, and my thanks go to all those who generously contributed. We are extremely fortunate to have such a great facility for events as the Corn Exchange, which I am sure will be joined in the not-too-distant future with the refurbishment and opening of the Town Hall. YOUR COMMUNITY MATTERS As I have previously mentioned, the Council and Len Pick Trust have been championing a community project to mark the100th anniversary of World War 1. This culminates in a display in the Town Hall on November 10th and 11th. This not-to-bemissed display will also include photographs taken at the time, kindly provided by residents.
Although not generally known, the Council operates a small grants scheme for beneficiaries who, in the Council’s opinion, would benefit from a grant which enhances the parish or all or some of its residents. Grants cannot be made to individuals. Previous recipients include the Butterfield, Dyke Village Hall Committee, Bourne 1st Scouts and Bourne Youth Choir. If you feel your organisation could benefit from a grant, please contact Ian Sismey for an application form at clerk. bournebt@btconnect.com. As you will note sport has always been an important part of my life. You name it and I’ve attempted to play it. Like most that played sports in their younger days though, my exploits, when re-told, were probably greater than reality. For instance, “I played rugby at Twickenham”. Well actually it was Twickenham Road Playing Fields in Birmingham, but why spoil a good story?
A presentation has also been made to Dot and Ted Kelby, who have recently celebrated their Platinum Wedding Anniversary 50

ourne escaped the worst of the bombing during the Second World War of 1939-45 although enemy bombers were often heard overhead at night on their way to industrial targets in the Midlands, but one disaster brought home to the people of the town the real consequences of the conflict. Shortly before midnight on Sunday 4th May 1941, families were woken by the sound of gunfire and the throb of aircraft engines as two planes battled it out overhead. At this time, the enemy was engaged in a massive bombing campaign against sensitive British targets and a Junkers 88, which was probably bound for Grantham where several munitions factories were located, was intercepted by a Royal Air Force Bristol Beaufighter and a dogfight ensued. After several minutes of combat with flashes of machine gun fire lighting up the night sky, the Junkers nose-dived earthwards with flames streaming from the fuselage and crashed on the Butcher’s Arms alongside the Bourne Eau at No 32 Eastgate, completely demolishing the building, setting fire to the debris and killing seven people inside. Those who died included the couple who ran the public house, landlord Charles Lappage, aged 63, and his wife Fanny, aged 59, two relatives who were visiting, Mrs

Lappage’s sister, Mrs Minnie Cooper, aged 62, and her daughter, Mrs Violet Jackson, aged 29, and three soldiers from the Loyal Regiment (North Lancashire) based at Grimsthorpe Castle who were billeted there. The Junkers had a crew of four and three of them baled out but two were killed when their parachutes failed to open. Their bodies were found some distance away and carried to the stables behind the Six Bells public house in North Street where they were handed over to the police. The pilot remained at the controls and was buried in the wreckage of the inn and the fourth crew member who survived landed safely by parachute near Northorpe and gave himself up to the Home Guard. Salvage teams retrieved much of the debris before the crater created by the crashed plane was filled in and the site of the Butcher’s Arms levelled. It remained derelict until after the war when it was bought for a garage development by the late Jack Lovell (1929-2005) who opened Riverside Motors in 1959. This building was eventually demolished in 2001 to make way for new homes and there is now no indication of the wartime tragedy that shocked the town almost eighty years ago. Warners Welcome ‘Bourne in Business’ Group ‘Bourne in Business’ enjoyed a most enlightening afternoon when they visited the Warners Midlands factory in Bourne on September 18th for a tour of the facilities. On entering the offices, the group were shown how the job arrives from the customer and what steps Warners need to take to turn it into a physical job. In the origination department, they illustrated how PDFs were used to create the pages of a magazine or catalogue, and how the operators plan to put it all together into something physical, with the production of printing plates. Warners have seven printing presses on site to allow them to print more than five hundred regular jobs each month. They have two types: web and sheet-fed. Some of the presses are capable of printing more than ten metres of paper every
second! We found out about the European sources of Warners’ paper, and the sustainable nature of the industry as a whole. In fact, Warners reuse or recycle more than 99% of materials used on site! The final area on the tour was the bindery. This department is responsible for the completion of any printed product produced by Midlands, and we were shown the different methods of finishing available to their customers. Midlands have been trading since 1926 and now employ more than 240 people and are still based in Bourne, holding both ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certifications for quality control and environmental practices. If anyone would like to visit the site for themselves, they are

Don’t Forget the Pension! There have been some recent discussions in the media about the importance of remembering pensions when dividing the assets of a marriage on divorce. In the past, it may have been the case that your family law solicitor would not prioritise pension sharing as one of the settlement terms, but nowadays, if you do consult expert legal advice, you will certainly be told that full disclosure of pension assets is needed, as they can be more valuable than the equity in the matrimonial home. Pensions may not seem very relevant for younger couples who see retirement as a distant prospect, but even if they have left another twenty or more years of working life, a pension fund can already have been built up by one or both of the spouses, and needs to be analysed for the purpose of including it in the matrimonial pot. Even those clients who do recognise the importance of pension sharing, often want to cut corners. This casual approach may be acceptable with money purchase pension funds, which can be valued as lump sums in a bank, but if there is any element of defined benefits/final salary pension or other complexities typically found in government and some company pensions, a prudent family lawyer will recommend obtaining a pension actuarial report. Otherwise, it is guesswork as to how much your share will be, and one of you could be very disappointed, the other pleasantly surprised, when retirement comes around. If you have any questions about how to share your pension assets on divorce, make sure you consult an experienced family lawyer to avoid losing out.

School News Headstart Day Nursery and Pre-School Headstart Day Nursery and Pre-School in Bourne have welcomed existing and new families back to the nursery for the new term. We have also been joined by our new pets, two baby guinea pigs called “Salt and Pepper”.
National Air Ambulance visits Thurlby Primary School Children at Thurlby Primary School were very excited indeed when the Children’s Air Ambulance helicopter landed on the school field. The visit was arranged by the Headteacher, Mr Graham Clegg, and Mr Wayne Thomas, helicopter pilot, who has two children attending the school. The whole school watched the helicopter touch down and then each class enjoyed the opportunity to ask questions and take a closer look at the emergency on-board facilities.
Our Pre-School Learning Centre and Focus Room have been enhanced, and this term we are offering extra-curricular activities such as Dance Club and Arts and Crafts Club for the children to participate in. Our successful trip to The Cedars Care Home is being extended to two hours which will give both the children and the residents more time to spend together and take part in some fantastic activities. The Little Explorers Room for our babies and the Little Adventurers Room for our toddlers have also been given a makeover to provide a wonderful environment for the children to play and learn in. We are very excited for the new term and are always more than happy to welcome new families into our setting.
Local School Converts to Academy Colsterworth Church of England Primary School converted to academy status on September 1st and joined The Multi Academy Trust – Abbey Academies Trust (AAT), increasing the number of schools within the Trust to three, (alongside Bourne Abbey Church of England Primary Academy and Bourne Elsea Park Church of England Academy, Bourne). Lucy Gibson, Head Teacher, said, “We are thrilled to have joined AAT, who above everything else, 62

puts its children first. We have been working with the Trust to secure the rapid improvements that the school needs. We look forward to a bright future working in partnership with AAT and I am sure the school will go from strength to strength as a result.” Sarah Moore, AAT Chief Executive, added,“This is an exciting time ahead for our Trust as we work together to ensure our partnership will be hugely successful, improving the lives of the children at Colsterworth as a result.” n ov e m be r 2 0 1 8
School News Bourne Westfield Primary Academy Thanks to the generous support of Tesco in Bourne, thirty-five children will be taking part in this year’s ‘Shakespeare in Schools Festival’ at the Key Theatre in Peterborough. Children will be working with professional actors and teachers in school to put on a production of Shakespeare’s ‘The Tempest’, which parents and the public will be able to see at the theatre on Monday November 19th. The children are all very excited about this opportunity and are working hard to learn their lines. Bourne Westfield took part in the project for the first time last year, and it was such a huge success that children couldn’t wait to get started again this year. Giving children the opportunity to perform Shakespeare on a professional stage with sound lighting and costumes, to a ticket paying audience, is really something very special, and we are looking forward to all of the preparation and the event. A further forty-three children will be taking to another stage in January 2019, this time in Sheffield at the FlyDSA Arena, as part of ‘Young Voices’. Bourne Westfield has taken part in this
event for the past six years, and it is a very popular activity for children in Years 4 to 6. The event involves children learning a varied repertoire of songs over the coming months and then travelling to the arena in early January to be part of a three thousand-strong choir performing alongside professional artists. This year, the concert will include Tony Hadley from ’80s band, Spandau Ballet, and Beau Dermott from “Britain’s Got Talent”.
Coming of Age for BBK One of the area’s leading nurseries is celebrating its coming of age this year. It was on October 2nd 2000 that Building Blocks Kindergarten moved into its high quality, purpose-built facilities in Exeter Street, Bourne. Eighteen years on, and with a fully qualified and dedicated staff of twenty-three, caring for a total of 182 children, BBK is clearly keeping up its extremely high standards.
It was a pleasure recently to hear Lead Practitioner, Claire Reece-Hamshere, extolling the virtues of her staff, but particularly her young charges. “I consider it an honour to have been part of all of our children’s early years journey, and to have been responsible in some part for their successes, once they’ve moved on from us,” she explained. That “moving on” has even seen one present member of the staff, Paula Blundy, return to the place where she herself was a happy two-yearold! BBK are now almost seeing the second generation of children, whose parents spent formative years at the nursery. Claire proudly points to a very friendly “extended family” team, with 80% of her staff having been at BBK for at least fifteen years. With the town’s population continuing its upward spiral, and with its enviable, glowing reputation, BBK can look forward to a successful “adulthood”, having now reached its eighteenth birthday!

Pets and Vets
Ear’s the Thing!
There is one thing that, as vets, we are guaranteed to see every day, and that is problematic ears. A recent survey of the most common conditions that owners have claimed against their pet insurance showed that allergies and ear disease were the most frequent. Allergies are understandable, as they are an aberration of the normal immune system and can only be contained with treatment, not cured. But ear disease? Surely, just a course of ear drops, and we’ve got it sorted. Well, of course, it’s not that simple. The factors that make one animal more susceptible to ear disease compared to another are not fully known, but there are some predisposing features that mean that an animal is more likely to get ear disease. We all know the problem of long-eared dogs – Cocker Spaniels and Basset Hounds spring to mind. The long ears, designed to act as blinkers, pull the ear canal shut and stop free air circulation. Equally, dogs with wrinkly or flat faces such as the Sharpei and the French Bulldog have distorted ear canals. If your dog is a swimmer, then excess water in the ear can irritate the skin, and over-zealous cleaning or the use of cotton buds can predispose to ear problems. More frequently in
cats, polyps or benign tumours deep in the ear canal can be present. Most initial causes of ear disease fall into two camps – parasites and allergies. We all know of ear mites which tend to be a parasite of the young puppy or kitten, but mites can also be a problem, so it is sensible if your pet has itchy ears to treat them with a prescription flea treatment that is also licensed against mites. Your vets and nurses can advise on this. Allergies in our pets tend to affect the skin and the digestive tract. Amazingly, our pets can have allergic skin disease and initially it
only affects the skin in one ear. After several years, the rest of the skin may become affected too. It is only once the skin of the ear canal is itchy and red that bacteria and yeasts can dive in and cause the smelly discharging ears we expect of ear infections. These infections can lead to chronic swelling of the ear skin, obliterating the canal altogether, and may even burst the ear drum and spread into the middle ear. Most ear infections do respond to topical ear treatment but, unless the underlying causes are dealt with, the infections become recurrent. Animals can become very head-shy when using ear drops as the ears can be very painful, but short courses of antibiotics are not enough, and the condition will only recur more frequently or worse, developing antibiotic resistance. Oral medication can be useful, especially when the ear canals are closed up. So, never ignore a pet with itchy ears. As always, prevention is better than cure

Police Patrol
Winter’s Coming! - Motoring Advice from the Police by PC Jacob Human
I
t’s a given that you should keep your car maintained throughout the year, but it’s particularly vital in the cold winter months. Winter checks really aren’t much different from normal car maintenance procedures, and can be completed without an in-depth knowledge of cars:
Professional winter car checks If you’ve not got the time to prepare your car for winter, many local garages and service stations offer a cheap, or sometimes free, winter check, especially if you’re due a service soon. Winter tyres
Check your car battery Cold and damp weather can put a strain on your car’s battery. The additional strain on them from the heater can lead to a car struggling to start. A set of jump leads near at hand is a wise idea.
If you frequently drive in winter, then consider buying a set of winter tyres. They offer better grip when the temperature drops below seven degrees, and while they’re effective in snow and ice, they also perform better than summer tyres when it’s wet.
Check screen wash
Winter car equipment
Winter weather is frequently wet, and this draws all the dirt from the road surface, so your wipers will become invaluable. Make sure your wipers are effective and don’t let the washer level get too low. A winter wash mix can be purchased, ready to use, and helps stop the fluid from freezing. Check exterior lights It sounds simple, and it is. The days are shorter and the weather is worse during the winter months, so maintenance of your exterior lights is an important aspect of a winter check.
Carrying an emergency kit with you during the winter months is a good idea –We recommend: • A mobile phone and charger • A hazard warning triangle • Hi-visibility vest • A first-aid kit • De-icer and a scraper • A shovel • A tow rope • Wellington boots • A torch • Warm clothes • Food and drink Finally … a decent set of car mats will not only protect your car’s carpets from wet or muddy feet, but they can also be wedged under the driven wheels to get you moving, should you get really stuck in the snow.
