Introduction
Welcome to Your January Issue. And so, here we go headlong into 2019 at the same frantic pace that saw 2018 seem to flash by. I always try to take stock at this time of year of what has happened over the last twelve months, memorable events that have been highlights, other days when things haven’t worked out so well, one son ‘making a new life’ for himself whilst his brother will soon be considering his own post-A Level destination. Whatever happens on the international and the national stage in the months to come, let’s try to remember that the goodwill which we all share at this time of the year is still around, with plenty to spare, as we enter 2019. Our resolution is to continue to provide you with a lively, interesting, useful and entertaining magazine every month. Please keep the feedback coming our way, and all the very best for a happy, healthy and successful year.

Fifty years on since man first landed on the moon, Monty Python first appeared, and Woodstock showed us Bourne hippies how it should be done – (tie-dyed grandad vests and flowers in your hair on the Well Head? Well, really!) This month’s issue, as ever, will give you plenty of valuable advice from our wonderful contributors, whether it be in the sphere of health issues, legal matters, finance, travel, computer problems, consumer affairs and pets … the list goes on! Resolution #1 from me for 2019? A couple of one-liners each month, starting right here: Thanks for explaining the word “many” to me – it means a lot. My wife told me to stop acting like a flamingo … so I just had to put my foot down. Enjoy the words … and all the very best for the year ahead.

New Year, New Challenges, New Beginnings... by Claire Saunders, Renu - Health, Beauty & Fitness
T
he turn of the year marks a time for many of us to reflect on the time that has passed and make plans and set goals for the new year. Increasing activity and getting in shape is often high on the list so, if this is on your agenda, now is the time to consider finding an exercise programme that will fit in with your lifestyle and become something you look forward to, rather than see as a chore. Mind Body Exercise - If improving posture, reducing stress and overall wellbeing are top of your list, then classes such as ‘Yoga’ and ‘Pilates’ are ideal. These classes are suitable for all abilities, but often include complete beginner courses this time of the year. Dance – Dance-style fitness classes are not just great fun, but there is lots of research now that confirms this type of activity can have a positive effect on reducing the risk of dementia and improving mood. It is also a great way to forget your troubles and enjoy the music. Classes such as ‘Aerobics’, ‘BEATZ’, ‘Zumba’ and ‘Belly Dancing’ all fit into this category. Toning – Most classes will improve your overall muscle tone, but classes such as weighted workout and ‘Legs Bums and Tums’ will work specifically with weights to music, to encourage inch loss,
delayed onset of osteoporosis and improved weight control. The Renu circuit-based gym also gives great results and only takes thirty minutes.
this principle with the added fun of boxing moves using gloves, pads and kick pads and ‘HIIT STEP’ is choreographed to music using steps and your own body weight.
Getting a Sweat On – Cardiovascular training is the more traditional way to exercise. Classes such as ‘Virtual RPM’ are perfect for this time of year when you can simply cycle your way to reach your goals with motivational instructors and no co-ordination skills required! ‘HIIT Training’ is also very popular for its quick results. Short bursts of activity with controlled rests between gives you a chance to challenge yourself but also work at your own level. ‘Box FIT’ uses
However you choose to start your exercise regime this year, find an activity that you enjoy and don’t be afraid to try something new. You may just surprise yourself! To this end, please use the voucher below to try your first class FREE! You have nothing to lose but calories! Happy New Year

Celebrating Two Years of Chapter Two of the Story January 2019, and two years since I opened the doors to my very own salon, “Jason Anthony”. Chapter two began with two new services and two new members of the Jason Anthony Team. I am a firm believer in never sitting still, always looking to the future and furthering my business, wherever I can. After such a successful first year, a lot has changed, I thought how can we top it, but we did just that. Since January, we have extended our services and added two recognised high-end brands, ‘HD Brows’ and ‘LA Weave’. This complements the salon, but also offers our clients the opportunity to have a pampered day-out, all under one roof; especially with the addition of our beauty department of ‘Lauren Gooderson Beauty’. We have now grown to a seven-member team with a vast skill set, all specialising in different aspects of hair and beauty, catering for ladies and gentlemen, from balayage to beard trims. Jason Anthony has grown yet again, but our high-end service, customer care and passion to give our clients the best, firmly remain as the foundation of our business. Mariah Mariah is an experienced, senior hair stylist who specialises in many aspects of hairdressing, including cutting, colouring and LA Weave hair extensions. Alongside hairdressing, Mariah has a love and passion for eyebrows! Despite already offering a brow service, she felt she wanted her skills to be the best, so completed a course with the high-end brand, ‘HD Brows’, which has now taken her brow knowledge to an extensive level. As a professional, friendly and warm member of my team, she takes pride in every aspect of her work and ensures clients always receive the excellent customer service that Jason Anthony prides itself on. Elle It has been amazing to watch this young and talented hairdresser grow over the last two years. Elle’s eagerness and willingness to learn to perfect her craft is second to none. Although she has an incredible joy for all aspects of 8

hairdressing, like everybody she has a favourite part of her trade - Elle’s love for hair colouring shines! As a blonde and balayage specialist, she will be attending some courses this year to gain even more colour knowledge, keeping her up-to-date and enabling her to provide the best for her clients. Lauren So, it has been over a year now since ‘Lauren Gooderson Beauty’ joined Jason Anthony, and what a great asset to the salon it is, allowing clients to get both hair and beauty treatments done in one place! Lauren has a real wealth of experience in the beauty world and continues to grow. Lauren (as well as Mariah) attended the ‘HD Brows’ course, giving Jason Anthony two HD Brows stylists in the one salon! Specialising in LVL lash lift, waxing , massage, eyelash tinting, manicures and pedicures, she can tend to all of your beauty needs. Lauren offers 20% off all beauty treatments on Tuesdays for OAPs, (not to be used in conjunction with any other offers). january 2019
Jason Ant hony Gemma Gemma is a fantastic addition to the Jason Anthony team, with over fourteen years of experience in the hairdressing industry. She has gained a lot of knowledge and skills and attended many courses to keep herself up-to-date. Gemma offers excellent customer service and her clients leave the salon feeling pampered, which is reflected in how she has seen her client base grow over the last year; however, she still welcomes new clients!
To Our Clients The second chapter, and second year of Jason Anthony has been another incredible one, and wouldn’t have been as successful as it was without your continued support and loyalty towards myself and my team over the last two years! Without you, all this couldn’t be possible and for that I am forever grateful and will do my utmost to continue giving you the best service, care and satisfaction you deserve! Thank you!
Jess Jess is the newest senior stylist within my team, after joining Jason Anthony this year with six years of experience. She is incredibly passionate about her job and offers ladies hairdressing as well as gentlemen’s. Her real passion and specialism is barbering, and she offers beard trims and cut-throat fades. Despite being the newest stylist in my team, Jess has attended a substantial amount of courses with our colour brand, ‘Schwarzkopf Professional’, in cutting and colouring, and she really gives her all to her work. She is driven and hardworking, and has fitted in well with the team even though she has only been with us a short time.
As we say goodbye to chapter two of Jason Anthony, we are excited for what Chapter 3 will bring, with many more things in the pipeline. Look out for future adverts, as we have a big surprise for the start of 2019. Watch this space! This is just the beginning!
Jason Anthony Allen
Becca With our salon growing at the rate it is, we felt it was time to take on our very own apprentice. Becca currently attends Peterborough College where she enrolled onto NVQ Level 2 in hairdressing on the apprenticeship scheme. She started with us in August, and is already showing signs of becoming a very talented young stylist, and I can’t wait to see her grow over the next three years. I am already seeing positive signs in Becca, and it really is nice to see someone of her age picking up new skills so quickly, so eager to learn what’s next.

Health
Gain a Healthy Weight and be the Best Version of You in 2019 New research shows that almost two thirds of Britons are on a diet to lose weight all, or most of, the time. Many achieve some weight loss by trying different diets but often end up in a ‘yo-yo cycle’, where they start a diet, lose some weight, and then ‘fall off the wagon’, either because they have unrealistic expectations about the diet, or their weight-loss goals are just not sustainable. The reality is that over 98% of people who lose weight on a diet gain the weight back within two years. Research, therefore, says that diets don’t work, at least not in the long-term. We are all thinking about weight loss in the wrong way! Most people want to lose weight simply to remove excess fat from the body; however, most of the time, the weight is there for a reason. Excess weight or fat is simply a symptom, not the root cause. If you lose the weight, but don’t address the cause, the weight will come back over and over again. “Slow and steady wins the race!” So, it’s not just about eating less calories or doing more exercise, or being a willpower weakling; we need to address the cause of our excess weight. So, what are some of the causes of excess weight? They might include: • Mindless eating. • Fear. • Feeling vulnerable.
• Poor food choices and times to eat. • Emotional hunger. • Stress and anxiety. • Lack of sleep. • Overeating or binge-eating. • Loneliness. • Self-hatred. • Financial worries. • Hormone imbalance. • Someone else’s belief that we need to lose weight. • A misguided self-belief that we need to lose weight. • Toxic thoughts about ourselves and others. And much more! Gaining an understanding of our issues with weight needs a whole new approach. So, to truly lose weight and keep it off, you need to address the underlying issues by using the hypnotherapy weight loss mind programme. “Make Your Life Incredible“ If you’re wanting to be a healthy weight, contact Christine who will be pleased to help.

Gerbera Beauty and Training School Six, very successful, months on from having established her salon on North Street in Bourne, owner Jane Rawlinson-Falla is now keen to promote the very impressive training arm of her business. As we enter 2019, thoughts may turn to new challenges ahead and new career paths to follow. Why not, therefore, Jane asks, enrol on one of her many short courses, based at the salon? There can be no doubting Jane’s credentials, having spent over twenty-five years in the beauty industry, and the last eight years lecturing at Peterborough Regional College. She can now bring this wealth of experience and knowledge into her Training School, where classes are either 1:1 or in a very small group. The Gerbera ‘Guild Training International’ Courses offer a convenient and advanced route into the profession, as the G.T.I. is the training arm of the Guild of Professional Beauty Therapists, the U.K.’s largest trade body and provider of insurance for the professional beauty sector. Courses offered include Body Massage, Facial Treatments, Waxing, Eye Treatments, Manicure, Pedicure and Gel
Polish. They run all year round and the practical sessions, either on a Saturday or in the evening, are designed to be fitted around your family commitments and other schedules you may have. The courses combine the flexibility of online theory learning with the intensive practical training in the superbly equipped and cosy salon. Jane does stress how a pre-requisite for success must be a self-motivated attitude on your part. So, if you see this as the perfect opportunity to start a career in the beauty sector, or whether you wish to add new treatments to the services you may already be offering, as a beauty, nail or massage professional, then contact the training school today. Sacro-iliac Joint problems
by Philip Hakim, Registered Osteopath, Owner of the Wellhead Practice
F
ound at the lower end of the spine, the Sacroiliac joints (SIJ) connect the sacrum (a triangular shaped bone at the base of the spine) to each of the larger outer pelvic bones (ilia) to make the pelvis complete. They act as shock absorbers allowing movement and body weight to be transferred in a smooth and controlled manner from the upper body through to the legs and vice versa.
Possible causes of injury: SIJ injuries are not unusual. The more traumatic causes can include a fall onto your side such as a miss-timed sliding tackle, or slipping and landing onto your bottom. Less dramatic reasons include repetitive weight bearing activities such as running, jumping, dancing or gymnastics for example. In practice, a common cause is a sudden jolt to the pelvis such as missing a step or dropping into an unseen hole in the ground whilst walking the dog. A rounded or slouching posture can also be a triggering factor. Symptoms: Pain is usually felt on one side of the lower back often localised to the dimpled area just below your waistband. You may feel discomfort in the buttock, lower abdomen or groin regions too. Some patients report a sense that the affected leg feels a slightly different length or that
it even drags or doesn’t swing properly when they walk. Occasionally the front of the thigh feels achy or appears to burn if they have been on their feet too long. Rest can be a relief although you can end up feeling slightly stiff afterwards and turning over in bed can be painful too. Treatment options: In my experience, most SI problems respond really well to manual treatment. Using techniques to decompress or re-align the joints and straighten the pelvis can work really well to restore normal joint movement. Soft tissue massage and stretching can then reduce the localised muscle spasm and encourage a healthier blood flow to the tissues. This helps to drain away any inflammation built up and speed up the recovery. Muscle re-education can then strengthen the surrounding areas or correct any postural imbalances that may be contributing and reduce the likelihood of a reoccurrence. Sometimes a special pelvic belt or sports taping is useful to stabilise the joint for a while.

Holiday Planning Time Already - Five of the Best for 2019
Clare Lockett

Croatia One of Europe’s most diverse holiday destinations, Croatia offers you the sparkling Adriatic coast, dotted with charming towns steeped in the history of its many rulers. You could stay for a short city break and explore Dubrovnik or Split; have a winter shopping trip to the markets in Zagreb in the run-up to Christmas; spend time on pristine beaches; chill at laid-back cafes and chic bars; sail between islands or spend a week on a wooden liveaboard boat; have an adventure kayaking and climbing at Omiš or visit National Parks at Plitvice, Mljet and Krka.
Sri Lanka Growing in popularity due to its mix of picture-postcard beaches, impressive ancient cities, incredible wildlife and adventurous activities, Sri Lanka is similarly feasible as a summer destination – the southern and eastern coasts do get monsoon rains in summer, but the majority of the country is dry.
Croatia has the perfect ingredients for a great holiday - adorable fresh seafood, good local wine, crystal-clear sea, reliable warm weather, stunning local architecture steeped in history, and friendly welcoming people.
The Caribbean Summer is also the time to strike a great off-peak deal in many parts of the Caribbean. Although this is the hurricane season, the risk of being affected is small, especially if you head for the southern Caribbean: think Trinidad and Tobago, Grenada, Aruba, St Lucia, Curacao and Bonaire.
The Canary Islands This archipelago ticks all the right boxes when it comes to sun, sea and surf, but is also home to Spain’s largest National Park, (Tenerife’s Teide). It has a compelling volcanic history and is peppered with authentic towns and pretty whitewashed buildings, where time seems to stand still. And each island – the main ones being Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote – has its distinct flavour, meaning there’s always a reason to come back for more. Turkey Having come back into favour in 2018, Turkey lures holidaymakers by virtue of being outside the Eurozone, but also because of its gorgeous coastline, its breath-taking historical sites – ranging from classical Greek remains to palaces built by Ottoman sultans – and its fabulous food.

Feast yourself on endless beaches, timeless ruins, welcoming people and elephants, killer surf, fun trains, famous tea and delicious food.
St Lucia St Lucia’s position means it is below the hurricane belt. With an average temperature of 30°C along with little rainfall, it makes for a perfect year-round holiday destination. For a small island it packs in a lot. If you can manage to tear yourself away from the beach, there’s snorkelling, diving, sailing, fishing, Segway tours, hiking the Pitons, and Sulphur Springs is the world’s only drivein volcano! Community News Christmas Tree Recycling Scheme to Support St Barnabas Hospice
Tesco Helps Local Community at Thurlby
St Barnabas Hospice will, once again, be offering a Christmas tree recycling service in the new year for households across Lincolnshire. It will take place on Saturday January 12th, when St Barnabas Hospice will collect and recycle unwanted Christmas trees from select postcodes.
A generous donation from Tesco Bags of Help Community Grant Scheme has made it possible to further improve the facilities at Lawrance Park, with the provision of an outdoor table tennis table. The Lawrance Park Management Committee submitted their request to Tesco Bags of Help after over 250 parishioners and visitors to Lawrance Park signed a petition in support of the bid.
Last year, the charity recycled 1,500 trees and raised £10,000 to support families living with a life-limiting or terminal illness in Lincolnshire. Amelia Mochan, Event Fundraiser for St Barnabas Hospice said, “Our Tree-cycle is the easiest way to get rid of your Christmas tree after the festivities are over and every donation made will make a real difference to the care and services we offer across the county. It certainly is the greenest and most charitable way to clean up after Christmas!” For the full list of postcodes and to register your tree, please go online to St Barnabas Hospice.co.uk. For further information, contact 01522 540 300 or e-mail fundraising@stbarnabashospice.co.uk

The table is accessible for all to use, the only requirement being that you bring your own bat and ball. For children, this may be their first experience of the game, whilst for older people a chance to recapture their youth – this is a game where there are no age restrictions. The children at Thurlby Community Primary School will be able to use the table at school break times. Villager and pre-school teacher, Sarah Austin said: “The great benefits of table tennis will be enjoyed by a range of people in the village; this is a sport that helps develop flexibility, stamina and muscle tone. Our village table tennis table has the added bonus of being outside, which means those using it are also benefitting from being out in the fresh air.” Bags of Help is run in partnership with environmental charity, Groundwork, and sees grants raised from the sale of carrier bags awarded to thousands of local community projects every year. Since launching in 2015, it’s provided more than £60million to over 18,000 local community projects. Millions of shoppers have voted in Tesco stores up and down the country for projects in their area. Customers get the chance to vote for three different groups each time they shop. Every other month, when votes are collected, three groups in each of Tesco’s regions are awarded funding. The balance of the cost came from fund raising by the Management Committee at their annual Bonfire and Fireworks event. Thanks also to Breedon Southern who assisted the Management Committee with the provision of materials for the project.
The winner of our ‘Spot the Poppy’ competition was Margery Rodgers from Holly Drive, Bourne. Congratulations! january 2019

1 Spray a frying pan with low calorie cooking spray and place over a medium heat. Add the onion, mushrooms and peppers and stir-fry for 5-6 minutes or until starting to lightly brown. 2 Stir in the garlic, curry powder and stir-fry over a high heat for 1-2 minutes. 3 Add the turkey and cook for 2-3 minutes, then add the tomatoes and stock. Bring to the boil, cover tightly, reduce the heat to low and allow to simmer gently for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. 4 Remove the frying pan from the heat, adjust the seasoning to taste and serve garnished with chopped coriander and sliced green chillies. If you enjoy a creamier curry or want to make the curry less hot swirl in some fat free natural yogurt. 5 Enjoy with boiled basmati rice or roast vegetables.

Mayor
Words from the Mayor David Mapp
“He’s behind you........No he isn’t.......Yes he is.......! It’s pantomime season and Christine and I enjoyed the performance of “Cinderella” at the Corn Exchange last month. Christmas events abounded, with carol services and festive lunches. What a super job the Round Table do with their Christmas party for senior citizens! Last year, as Deputy Mayor, we attended the party during a snow storm which kept numbers low. This year, when we arrived at the allotted time, the Corn Exchange was rammed. Both the Tablers and Clark Catering excelled themselves, to ensure all were well-fed and watered! YOUR COUNCIL MATTERS In early January, the town’s Neighbourhood Plan Group and the Council must endeavour to place, within the town, an additional two hundred houses. This new allocation has been passed to us by SKDC to form part of our Neighbourhood Plan. We have no choice in finding a home for these dwellings, (it is a central government requirement), but within certain constraints and subject to consultation, the positioning of any further development is open for discussion. Residents are asked for suggestions/ideas on possible development sites or from residents interested in self-builds which could form part of the Plan. Please contact Ian Sismey, the Town Clerk, on 426123 with any views, or if you require further information.
Get Peace of Mind before you buy... Gowers Surveyors are a local independent firm of Chartered Surveyors and Chartered Building Engineers, specialising in Period Property Building Surveys. We will provide you with a professional assessment of your prospective purchase so you are fully aware of what you are buying.
The Council has pledged a grant of £5,000 towards a new all-weather sports facility at Elsea Park which is planned to be built, for the benefit of the town, during 2019. After the festive excesses of last year, I recall, visiting my doctor with a case of over-indulgence. He looked at me and said, “Don’t eat anything fatty”. I said, “Do you mean no bacon and sausages, then?” “No”, he replied, “I said don’t eat anything.....Fatty!”
Happy New Year to you all, (including my doctor!) 34

Choose Arbitration! Some of you out there will be embroiled with your ex-partner, be that your spouse or former cohabitee, in a dispute concerning financial issues arising from your relationship. In divorce proceedings, after the out-of-court approaches are exhausted, namely either by an agreement reached in person between the spouses, or mediation or negotiation through your respective solicitors, you may well end up having to start court proceedings for the Judge to make a decision in a financial remedy order. There is another option available now – arbitration! This has been around for family cases for some time, but was generally considered only affordable or suitable for big money cases and/or celebrities who want to keep their names out of the papers. But choosing to arbitrate rather than litigate is available for anyone who wants to take control of the process, choose their own Judge rather than take pot luck at the Family Courts, and choose their own time table, rather than waiting (sometimes up to a year) to get your case finished because the Courts are so busy. In the long run, you can also save money because, although you pay for the Arbitrator on top of your legal representation, due to the speed with which you can be finished and limiting the amount of paperwork needed, it is likely to turn out to be less costly. It will certainly be less costly on your stress levels! If you would like to find out more about the arbitration option, contact a specialist Family Law solicitor.

Gardening
The Potting Shed January is a good time to relax, as the weather does not allow for days of work at the allotment or vegetable plot, although as you will see there are a number of jobs that can still be done. Sit back with a good book on gardening and a seed catalogue and make a plan! Reflect on what grew well, what went wrong and if it can be improved on this year. How about trying to grow something a little unusual for a change, away from your usual standard fruit and veg? If there are any areas of your plot that still need a winter digging, then make sure that the soil is not frozen or waterlogged - (if the soil sticks to your boots keep off it, as this will only compact the soil). Well-rotted manure, or organic material, can be added to the soil surface and it will become incorporated naturally. Also a good idea when you are digging is to apply lime to the surface at 100g per square metre (3oz per square yard), especially if you grew brassicas the
year before. Getting the soil prepared now will save time feeding later in the year and will often enhance crop growth and yield. Towards the end of the month, seed potatoes should be available and you can start chitting them ready for planting: put them rose side uppermost and use old egg boxes or seed trays. Weather permitting, there are a few jobs that can be tackled: • Prune apple and pear trees but not stone fruits such as cherry and damson; they should be summer pruned. • Plant bare-rooted trees and bushes. • At this time of year rhubarb can be forced, using pots or an upturned bucket, or even a pile of straw, making sure any holes are covered to completely cut out the light. • Protect plants form cold and check stakes and ties.
SALES | REPAIRS | SERVICE | PARTS | HIRE
FENTONS
• Start a bean trench by digging down about 60cm and then start filling it with your organic kitchen waste. Each time you add a batch of waste, cover with a layer of soil: continue until the trench is full and leave it to rot down. • It’s a good time of year for a spot of cleaning: seed trays and plant pots can be cleaned with a mild bleach solution to kill diseases that may have carried over to the new seedlings. • Draw the soil up around the stalks of cabbages and winter cauliflowers to just under the first set of leaves. Check over Brussels sprouts and sprouting broccoli and support them with a strong stake to prevent them from being blown over in high winds. • In non-freezing weather, shallots can be planted. Shallots take longer to grow than onions, but if planted now, should be ready earlier in the summer.
Here’s to a year of fruitful gardening!

Bourne First-Time Buyers Need 8½ Times Annual Salary to Get on Housing Ladder
According to my research, anyone looking to get a foot onto the property ladder as a first-time buyer in Bourne today, AS A SINGLE PERSON, would need to spend 8 ½ times their earnings on a Bourne first-time buyer property. Using the numbers from the Office of National Statistics (ONS), the average value of a first-time buyer property in Bourne today is £145,000, compared to £125,000 in 2007. If we divide those property values by the average annual earnings of first- time buyers - in 2007, that was £14,489 pa and that has risen to £16,958 pa .. giving us the ratio of 8½ to 1. However, what must be remembered is that these are raw statistics from the ONS and don’t take into
account other factors, like most people buy their first home as a couple. Also, mortgage rates are at an all-time low and who can remember mortgage rates of 15%+ in the 1990s, meaning borrowing today is relatively cheap? Also, 95% Loan to Value first-time buyer mortgages have been available since the end of 2009 (i.e. you only need to save a 5% deposit) and first-time buyer rates of 2.19% fixed for 5 years can be obtained (correct at time of writing this article.) It is cheaper to buy than to rent … fact!

Bourne’s Magical Chris Saturday December 1st saw the opening of the festive season for the people of Bourne and neighbouring villages, as the annual Magical Fayre thrilled the many thousands of visitors. The record turnout, from late-morning, right through to the popular band, The Great Pretenders, bringing it all to a thunderous climax around 5.30pm, was astonishing. It is the Town Council to whom we are all indebted, for providing such an impressive array of Christmas lights and decorations. The Bourne Events Team succeeded in providing something to satisfy all ages, and they deserve a massive vote of thanks from us all. Thanks also go to Hill and Clark and to Newton Fallowell, for popping up their advertising banners and posters around the town. The Santa’s Grotto feature in Wake House, proved extremely popular. Huge thanks go to Sainsburys (for the Gingerbread Man-making ingredients) and Two Jays for their support, S.K.D.C. for their kind sponsorship, and particularly to Debbie and Roy from Wake House, for their tireless help and patience! Once again, the day provided an opportunity for some of our talented local musicians and dancers to showcase their talents on the Main Stage, and the standard of performance was outstanding. The Bourne in Business group kindly provided sponsorship for the stage. There was a tremendous response to the wide range of fairground rides, craft stalls and food outlets which saw a brisk trade all afternoon.Santa Claus, (assisted by Bourne’s Mayor, David Mapp, with wife Christine and some characters from the forthcoming pantomime in attendance), performed the switch-on to loud applause. Finally, the Bourne Events Team would like to extend sincere thanks to everyone who played a part in making Bourne’s Magical Fayre such an enjoyable and successful day, and are already looking forward to Bourne’s next big event, the Classic Car and Bike Carnival in June 2019. 40

History
Discovering . . . Allotments
Rex Needle
T
hose small areas of land let out at low rents known as allotments have become part of the British way of life and they survive today as a regular source of both fresh produce and rich humour. The collection of sheds, shanties and lean-tos that have sprung up around them are claimed to be the refuge of henpecked husbands anxious to escape nagging wives and there may be a grain of truth in that but they also contain the spades and forks and other equipment needed to tend the land and to grow the cabbages and carrots, the parsnips and potatoes, with which they invariably return home after a Sunday morning’s hard labour. The allotment is defined by law as a piece of land that is cultivated as a farm or garden as defined by the Parish Councils Act of 1894 and during the first four years almost 15,000 acres were allocated to 32,000 tenants which resulted in local authorities being given powers to provide them. They became a great source of food during the two world wars of the last century and by 1918 there were 1.3 million growing vegetables at the impressive rate of 2,000,000 tons annually while the Dig for Victory campaign of 1940 urged the population to cultivate every available piece of spare land with the result that many private gardens and even parks were turned into productive plots.

Bourne
In Bourne, allotments were provided in the past at many locations by benevolent landowners, notably the Earl of Exeter (Lord of the Manor of Bourne), William Ann Pochin (Lord of the Manor of Bourne Abbots), Lord Aveland and Lord Willoughby, a particular pioneer of such assistance for working people. Today, there are two areas of allotments in Bourne, one at the corner of Meadow Drove and Spalding Road with 18 plots owned by Bourne United Charities who have been providing them since 1886 and the other owned by Bourne Town Council established on land in South Fen Road purchased from Lincolnshire County Council in March 1982, the 4½ acres being originally divided into 89 various sized plots but now increased to 120 through sub-division. Both sites enjoy the benefits of a rich, black soil producing annual crops of vegetables at a fraction of the price they can be bought in the shops as well as providing a hobby for those with little garden space at their own home and at the same time maintaining the tradition of self-sufficiency and so the popularity of the allotment in Bourne seems to be assured for the foreseeable future. The New Year is Upon Us - Time to Get your Ducks in a Row! - by Richard Ash & Matthew Biggs - Liberty Partnership Ltd
It’s January, the dust has settled after the festive period, and it’s time to start doing some of the jobs we’ve been putting off in the lead-up to Christmas and New Year’s Eve. You’ve probably had an annual statement come through from your pension provider, or a reminder that your insurance policy is due to expire, and have popped them onto the pile in your kitchen, not to be looked at until the next one comes through the door!
fully understand all of the information you have been given, and that financial planning can easily become very confusing, so why not come and talk to us? We have a team of highly qualified, experienced and friendly financial planners on hand who are able to assist you in understanding any information you might have regarding your existing arrangements, but will also be able to help
guide and support you through all the various areas of financial planning, from retirement and protection planning to wills and estate planning. If you would like to make a start on getting your ducks in a row, then please contact the office on 01778 342291 to arrange a FREE initial consultation with one of our financial planners.
But maybe, this year, you will set aside some time and finally read through the letters that have been sent to you. We believe the best time of the year to do this is at the start, as it will set you up for the year and also take some weight off your mind early on. We also appreciate that you might not

Don’t Let the Pickpockets Ruin Your New Year Sales Shopping and Bargain Hunting If, like many people, you choose to hit the High Street straight after Christmas for your seasonal spend up – then don’t let the pickpockets spoil your festive bargainhunting fun. While you may be armed with a postChristmas shopping wish-list, you can guarantee that the pickpockets and purse dippers will be out in force to cause heartache and misery. According to last year’s police statistics across a number of UK cities, December 27th is when shoppers are traditionally out in force after Boxing Day and is the most popular day for thieves to strike. In Birmingham alone, £20,000 worth of valuables were taken by pickpockets during the festive season, whilst in Cardiff that figure was £27,000. As you would suspect, phones – in particular expensive ones – were top of the list, credit and debit cards were next, followed by purses, wallets, handbags and jewellery.

It’s so easy when we are busy and in a rush not to zip up bags or put phones away properly, but it is so very important to be extra vigilant and careful at this time of year, especially in crowded shops and whilst in queues.

Do conceal your wallet in a buttoned or zipped pocket where it doesn’t bulge. Do carry bags in front of you or diagonally across your chest. Do return cards to your purse or wallet quickly and zip it up or button it. Do use a money belt if you’re carrying a significant quantity of cash. Do keep your valuables out of sight. Do keep a list, separate from your wallet and phone, of contact numbers of family in case your phone is stolen. Do not place your mobile phone or wallet in your back pocket. Do not hang your bag or any items on the back of a chair. Do not leave anything on the back of a pushchair. Do not place your belongings, including shopping bags, out of sight on the floor. Do not show your money - keep it safely in your pocket and when using the ATM, always ensure that your money has been secured in your purse or wallet before turning away. Wishing you a very Happy New Year and please keep your valuables safe with the above advice.

Club Spotlight
Give Something New a TRY in 2019! Bourne Rugby Club, located just a mile out of town on the Spalding road, has recently become an O2 Touch Centre and is eager to recruit new players. What is O2 Touch? • Touch rugby for adults (age 14+) sponsored by O2, which includes music that is played throughout the sessions. • An energetic and fun way to get fit, meet new people and support your local rugby club!
What is touch rugby? • Non-contact rugby. Instead of being tackled, players are touched (tagged) and must then put the ball down to be collected by a teammate. Why would I want to give it a try? • Your first session is free, so you have nothing to lose. After that, you can play for £2 per session or sign up as a club member for just £40 for the season. • BRUFC, (Bourne Rugby Union Football Club), is a friendly, family-oriented club where you will always be welcome. Coaches and experienced players will help you get to grips with the rules in no time. • We start the sessions with different warm-ups every week, so you won’t get bored of repeating the same old things. • Rewards are available by downloading the O2 Touch app and checking in to sessions. • You will never walk away from a session regretting having attended.

Which Internet Security Suite Should I Use? by Taff Lovesey, Lites PC
At one time I was happy to recommend the use of free antivirus solutions. However, in recent years things have changed and viruses now account for only a small part of the threat to your online security, as criminals turn to other, more successful methods, for stealing your data or loading malicious content onto your system. As such, my recommendation is to invest in a full Internet Security suite subscription. Areas where the free internet security solutions are weak and usually fall short are:
• Bitdefender • Norton • McAfee • Kaspersky (see note) Behind these is a large pack of other solutions, including the two with a ‘free’ home user licence offering, Avast and AVG. • Bullguard • Trend
Complex Malicious Files: Over the years, malware have become more complex, aggressive, and often undetectable by basic antivirus software.
• Avast • Panda
Malicious Websites: Using schemes, cybercriminals can lure you to phishing sites, fake websites designed to steal your information. You can also land on sites that check your computer for software vulnerabilities it can exploit so it can install malware.
• ESET
Privacy Risks: With the complicated and ever-changing privacy settings of most social networks, you could be sharing more information than you intended. Every detail you post online could be collected to build up a persona and used for identity theft.
An update on Kaspersky The corporate offices of Kaspersky are based in Moscow and at the end of 2017 the British Government took the unusual stance of advising against using Kaspersky due to this; citing it as a potential gateway for the Russians to access personal and restricted data. This extended to an outright ban on its use in some areas with the following advice given…
Information Theft: Data-stealing malware uses different tactics to get your information for the purposes of fraud. SPAM and Malicious E-mail: Today’s spam is crafted to closely resemble legitimate e-mail. Sometimes, the only distinction between a fake and a real message are a few altered links. Unsecured WiFi and Home Network Security: Cybercriminals can easily hide behind an unsecure network and use your connection to perform malicious activities. Which Internet Security Suite should I choose? Each year I take a summary of reviews from various sources to determine which security protection is the best performing. Over the previous three years the top three had not changed and generally stood out from the rest of the pack by some distance, but more recently McAfee have stepped up their game and results have outperformed Kaspersky. • AVG None of the testers recommended using the in-built Windows Defender as a sole source of protection.
“… where it is assessed that access to the information by the Russian state would be a risk to national security, a Russia-based AV company should not be chosen. In practical terms, this means that for systems processing information classified SECRET and above, a Russia-based provider should never be used.” Some reviewers support this view and advise against its use, others say it is scare-mongering. What has been noticeable is that Kaspersky has been missing from some of the review sources I use. I believe this is NOT due to performance, but due to the reasons mentioned above. It is for the individual to decide on whether or not they continue to use the tool as the mainstay of their systems security suite.

Moo’s Mucky Puppies Amelia Datson is an eighteen-year-old caninophile! “The more dogs I have, the happier I am,” she readily admits. So, who better to entrust your beloved pets to than to someone who loves her dogs more than she loves other humans? Who better to establish a business where the animal is central to absolutely everything she does? “Moo”,(as Amelia has long been known), loves to use the wide open expanses of Morton Fen, just north of Bourne, (virtually on the doorstep of her home in the village), to exercise the many dogs whose owners have already heard all about the services she has to offer. These services include “Dog Sitting/ Doggy Day Care”, where Amelia collects the dog and returns it later, having spent time walking it and caring for it at her home. Her “Paw Star Hotel” provides a home for as long as your holiday may take you. Your dog is taken
into her own family with her own pets, and provided with their own sleeping quarters and the promise of lots of love and exercise in the open air. It might just be a “Pet Check” that you need. Here Amelia calls at your premises to check on your animals whilst you are out. She will feed and water, clean up and medicate if required, and this also includes mucking out horses! What about a “Pet Taxi” to take your pet to an appointment, “Nail Trimming” or “Behavioural Issues”? The list goes on …
Her glowing Facebook reviews mention her loving and caring nature, her passion for her dogs, and the very reasonable charges she makes for her services. “Moo is absolutely lovely and loves animals”, seems to sum it up perfectly!
Stress free dog care!
Situated on the edge of Morton Fen Services include:
• Basic Training / Minor Issues - Free assessment, followed by a 1 to 1 session • Doggy Holiday - Duration varies, £30 per day • The Paw Star Hotel - Duration varies, £35 per day and night • Pet check - For animals that need attention throughout the day • Pet Taxi - First class taxi for pets that like to ride in style • Nail trimming - Duration varies, £10 for first dog, £5 for any extra dogs • Dog Walks - Duration varies, £9.50 per hour, £6 per extra dog • Dog sitting / Doggy Day Care - Duration varies, £25 per day and £15 per extra dog. Pets and Vets
New Year’s Resolutions We’ve just been through our traditional Christmas (or “eating fest”), and if it was a good one, like mine, the waistband is getting a little tight and some New Year’s resolutions are on the cards. Weight problems are increasing in our pets too, with some estimates stating that as many as half our pets are currently overweight, with a significant percentage considered clinically obese. As out pets are fed by us, then it is something that we must take control of. Most people think that dogs and cats need a bowl of food a day, but how much is in one bowl? Portion size and the number and type of snacks we feed our pets affect the number of calories eaten by them.
If you are concerned about your pet’s weight, talk to your veterinary nurse. They will calculate the required calorie intake and work out a feeding plan with you. Set out their total food for the day in advance, including snacks, and stick to it, then weigh your pet twice monthly to see if the diet is working or if you need to adjust it. Is your pet a secret eater, or are you the secret feeder? Only you can be the judge of that!
Fat cells are laid down in the body when our animals are young and growing, and the number of fat cells then never changes. The cells get fuller or thinner, depending on the calorie intake of your pet, but they never go away, so overweight puppies and kittens are predisposed to become obese adult animals. Another contribution to the development of pet obesity is their owner’s misconception of “healthy”. Recent research has shown that 56% of cat owners and a whopping 97% of dog owners believe that their overweight pet is a healthy size – clearly not true. Most people will admit to giving their pets a few extra treats, but don’t forget that the problem lies with the amount, and most of us don’t weigh out the bowl of food, or count the biscuits we let our pets have in one day. Exercise can make a difference to the number of calories your pet needs, but if you have an indoor cat or an older, less active, dog then you will need to be extra vigilant. Most dogs (and some cats) are designed to eat anything they can get; it’s a survival requirement in the wild, so they always look hungry and will eat anything given to them. Those pleading, brown eyes, as they beg for a biscuit or two, is only instinct and it takes self-discipline by us to resist.
