Welcome to Your February Issue.

And so, hold on tight, here comes Valentine’s Day! “Love is in the air/ Everywhere I look around/ Love is in the air/ Every sight and every sound”, so sang John Paul Young in 1978. However, I think these words from the French author, Antoine de Saint-Exupery, strike a more romantic tone: “Life has taught us that love does not consist in gazing at each other, but in looking outward together in the same direction”.

Whilst you’re all “looking outward” then, I hope you all enjoy our February issue, where there are plenty of ways in which you can make the most of this romantic month, especially the music quiz!

Welcome to “February fill-dyke” and, to coin an old adage, “February fill dyke, be black or be it white; be it white, ‘tis better to like.”

(In other words, rain and snow are both welcome this month, although snow is preferable.) We’ve already got early showings of snowdrop and celandine, with daffodils not far behind, so I’m not too sad if we’ve already had our winter’s complement of snow.

As ever, our contributors have brought together a whole host of golden, not daffodils, but ideas and recommendations instead, to make this year’s Valentine’s Day your best ever.

And finally, cringe-time : Why can’t humans hear a dog whistle? Because dogs can’t whistle.

e all know the deal – watch what you eat, follow a fitness routine and, if it is within your budget, join a gym or hire a personal trainer and you will lose weight, look good and feel great.

Phobias and Fears When you explore your fears you set yourself free. There are many phobias that we can suffer from, the most common being fear of spiders, needles, heights, public spaces, public speaking and flying. The intense fear we feel means we spend a lot of time avoiding certain things or situations, and our world becomes smaller and smaller as we stop enjoying doing some of the things we used to do.

A phobia is defined as a persistent fear of an object or situation in which the sufferer is compelled to go to great lengths to avoid certain situations. The fear is typically disproportional to the actual danger posed, often being recognized as irrational.

So what do you do? Run, freeze, feel sick or simply want to cry?

There are, in the main, two types of phobias. There is the simple phobia where a person reacts negatively when they come into contact with the thing that causes fear, for example dentists, needles, flying or spiders. Then there is the complex phobia which causes fear and anxiety continually.

“Fear can make a bee seem like an elephant.”

The human mind is an amazing thing, undoubtedly the most powerful and resourceful problem-solving device in the known universe. However, our minds have developed as part of an evolutionary process, and your mind contains powerful tools for learning and dealing with danger. In our modern lives, where these ‘fight or flight’ responses are generally less useful, strong behavioural responses or fears can nevertheless be set up. It is usually when we are stressed or anxious that these primitive parts

of the brain can sometimes overreact and set up patterns of fear or thought that you find difficult or impossible to control.

“Too many of us are not living our dreams because we are living our fears.”

The good news is that your brain has an ability to learn and change; in fact you are constantly learning. Changing and learning new habits such as being more relaxed and calm can help overcome simple phobias very quickly. Now, here’s an interesting fact; habits exist on the same subconscious level as phobias, and hypnosis helps create new habits or patterns of behaviour. The basic feature of any phobia is a conflict between the conscious and subconscious. Hypnotherapy communicates with the subconscious, filtering through how the client wants to be, rather than how they currently are.

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy helps with all these different types of phobias, allowing you to feel free to live a normal life again.

Stamford’s Celebrity Designer Wants You to Steal the Show!

Anna-Maria D’Amato, the owner of ‘Anna Couture Boutique’ in Stamford, took the ambitious step late last year of opening ‘Anna Couture Brides’, a delightful property opposite The George Hotel on High Street, St. Martins.

Barely two years since its arrival on Cheyne Lane, ‘Anna Couture Boutique’ had already become so popular, offering the latest stylish and glamorous ladies wear for all special occasions.

Now the time was right to expand the business and the new premises have become a beautiful design house, where Anna-Maria and her team of highly-skilled seamstresses now have room to work their magic.

A costume design graduate with a particularly enviable C.V, Anna-Maria has years of experience in costume design for both television and film, with anecdotes galore! For instance, she was Madonna’s seamstress for a year during her 2006 “Confessions” tour. Anna-Maria explains,“During my time making Madonna’s corsets, I had to sew up a fishnet stocking of hers while she was still wearing it, which was terrifying, (my needle was millimetres from her leg!)”

She has produced costumes for blockbuster productions, including “Star Wars” and “The Phantom of the Opera”, and has worked with Gok Wan. Before taking on the new premises, a number of wedding dresses would have been sold,

including some from Chanticleer, a top British bridalwear designer and manufacturer. The opportunity to buy the Chanticleer label proved irresistible for Anna-Maria and that prompted the expansion on to the High Street (literally). Anna-Maria had previously run her own bridal studios in North London and Gerrards Cross for many years, so her experience is vast.

Bourne Salvation Army’s New Community Group for 2019 On Thursday January 17th, we launched a brand-new session called the Music Man Project.

This group has been specifically tailored for adults with learning disabilities. Sessions are designed for everyone, including friends, family and carers! There will be

opportunities to sing, play various instruments, including hand-bells and drums, and share together in fellowship through the music that is being created. The group will be held every third Thursday of the month from 10.30 am till 12 noon and led by S!NGS Choir founder,

Brooke Peverell. Refreshments will be served during the session and there is no charge to attend.

Rebecca commented, “We would welcome any new parents and children who are interested in joining in the musical fun. The sessions are an opportunity for children and adults to enjoy quality time together, using singing and musical instruments.”

Rotary Clubs’ Presentation to Bourne’s Willoughby School Members of the Bourne Rotary Club were recently entertained and enlightened by a group from the Willoughby School in Bourne.

The school had sent a party of eight students, accompanied by four teachers and assistants to stay at an Adventure Holiday Centre in Caythorpe, near Grantham.

Headmaster, Mr James Husbands, and Nicola Hill, a teacher and Event Organiser, were both full of praise for the organisation, help and support they received through the three days of the course.

The students’ activities included zip-wiring, canoeing, raft-building, fencing, archery and a sensory trail. All eight students were able to participate in the events, thanks to the PGL organisers making available equipment to accommodate the needs of all the students, including wheelchair users.

Ben Utteridge, aged 15, a Willoughby School student who had participated in this year’s event, was present. During the presentation of slides and video clips it was evident from his response to looking at the pictures that he and his fellow

students remembered and enjoyed those three days. During the raft-building activity, the students took great pleasure in tipping their Headmaster into the water!

Both Mr Husbands and Nicola Hill stated the event clearly gave the students the opportunity to mix with able-bodied students of their own age which is beneficial for all concerned. Rotarians were moved and humbled by what the Willoughby School has achieved during the first event of this kind,

which is not Government-funded.

The Rotary Clubs of Bourne and Deepings were delighted to make a joint funding to the Willoughby School. In addition, two cheques of £500 each were presented by Mrs Jenny Spratt, (President of The Deepings Rotary Club) and Mr David Tooze, (President of Bourne Rotary Club) to Mr James Husbands of Willoughby School as a contribution for the event in 2019 where a new set of students will have the opportunity to undertake a similar experience at the Adventure Holiday Centre.

“Tim the Swim” Raises Cancer Research Cash One of the more unusual challenges taken on by someone living around these parts, so far from the coast, must surely be a long-distance swim in the sea, in order to raise money for their preferred charity. Local hero, Tim France, (self-confessed “39 and not a very fast swimmer”) took the plunge, literally, on September 17th last year and swam to the Isle of Wight from the mainland, aiming to raise £1,000 for Cancer Research U.K.

As Tim explains, “The distance covered, (in 1 hour 3 minutes), was 2,973metres, which was no problem, although it was supposed to be only 1,500metres.

However, the tidal flow (which was dangerous and almost caused my support crew to get me out of the water) was fast, and I was dragged off course by at least two miles.”

Recovering from his exertions, Tim was able to bask in the glow of having achieved something

really worthwhile. He adds, “One in two of us will suffer cancer in one of its many forms during our lives, and Cancer Research U.K. are constantly improving survival rates of this cruel disease. The total stands at just over £900.

Snowdrop Paradise Open to the Public for the Final Time The final snowdrop opening of 21 Chapel Street, Haconby, near Bourne for the National Garden Scheme, (N.G.S.), will take place on Saturday February 16th and Sunday 17th, as a tribute to Cliff Curtis who sadly died in May, last year.

Cliff and his wife, Joan, created their garden over many years along with the help of their daughter, Sharron. They have opened their garden for the N.G.S. for twenty-eight years and were one of the first to open it for snowdrops, in 1992.

The garden behind the cottage is overflowing with snowdrops,

crocus, hellebores and many other bulbs and early flowering plants.

Cliff was “bitten by the snowdrop bug” about thirty-five years ago, when ‘galanthomania’ was in its infancy. (Galanthomania is the love of all things relating to the snowdrop, or galanthus).

Cliff quickly and quietly became one of the most modest, yet knowledgeable and widely respected, galanthophiles in the country.

A number of snowdops associated with Cliff are Galanthus Peardrop, G. Chandlers Green Tip, G. Little Joan, G.Tutu, G. Squire Burroughs, G. Mill House, G. Sharron Louise, G. Hacconby Green, G. Hacconby Early, G. Chapel Green Tip, G. Orchard Cottage and, of course,

Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night” to be staged at Peterborough Cathedral One of Shakespeare’s best loved comedies, “Twelfth Night”, is to be staged at Peterborough Cathedral from February 13th to 15th by Gearbox Theatre Company. The Potting Shed As I write this, we have yet to have the usual frosts and snow that winter brings, but we do have the promise of a cold snap and possibly some snow. With this in mind, February may prove to be a pretty cold month but, who knows? More than any other month you need to watch the local conditions and act accordingly. Don’t always do what the seed packet says - make a judgement depending on the ground conditions; you don’t want all your seeds to rot!

It is possible to sow crops such as broad beans along with early peas (under cloches), parsnips and garlic, but only do so if the ground is not frozen or waterlogged. A good idea for sowing peas is to use lengths of plastic guttering: half fill them with good quality seed compost and sow the seeds about 2inches apart, cover with compost, water and keep in a light spot under cover. Once the seedlings have grown to about 3 inches, make a shallow drill and slide the contents of the guttering into the drill. Make sure they are firmly bedded and water. Other crops that can be sown outdoors (watch the weather and make a judgement), are turnips, rhubarb crowns and grape vines.

February is the best month to plant out garlic and shallots.

Prepare the ground as you would a seed bed and plant using a trowel; don’t push the bulbs into the soil. The garlic cloves should be planted about 2ins/5cms deep and, with the shallot bulbs, leave the tips just at the soil surface.

replant the disturbed bulbs as soon as possible.

Make sure that you have got all of your seed potatoes by the end of the month and that they are spread out in a seed tray, or in egg boxes, in a light cool room where they can “chit” (sprout shoots), before being planted out. If the “chits” look pale and spindly, the room is probably too warm or too dark.

The soil can be prepared for the spring planting by completing the winter digging, if not already done, removing any weeds that have survived the winter months. To warm up the soil for planting next month, cover it with fleece or polythene and, if you haven’t already, add well-rotted manure or compost to the prepared soil.

Other jobs that can be carried out are:• Removing dead leaves from cabbages and sprouts –if they start to rot they can spread mould and mildew.

• Make sure winter cabbages, cauliflowers and broccoli are netted against hungry pigeons, whose food supply is a little short at this time of year.

• Spray fruit trees, whilst they are still dormant, with a plantoil based winter wash to help prevent aphids and scale insects.

• Feed and mulch fruit trees and bushes.

Fabulous Future for Fearless Frankie Fordham Life can be a drag for some teenagers, but not for one Bourne youngster.Frankie Fordham is only thirteen, but already he can see his future in the exciting sport of drag racing. Four years ago, Frankietried a drag race experience as a birthday present from his grandparents and his mum and dad, Emma-Louise and Matt Fordham.

After that, he was ‘bitten by the bug’ and the need for speed left him wanting more. He waited until he was ten years old to enter the UK junior championships; with no prior experience, he competed and finished an impressive twenty-third out of thirty-four. Hefinished his 2018 season in eleventh position in the U.K. championships.

Frankie hopes that 2019 will see him progressing further with a newlydesigned drag car and new sponsors. Frankie would like to take this opportunity to thank his sponsors,at present Zero Limits and EDF Motorsports of Bourne, who have helped him on his journey so far. He is looking forward to working in partnership with other local companies, such as Discovering Magazines, but he would also welcome any new sponsors, whose businesses could be promoted by their being advertised on Frankie’s vehicle.

The Law at Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day is about being with the one we love and wanting what is best for them. However, that works best over the long-term and not just for the one day.

A restaurant will serve an enjoyable meal with an appropriate setting, whilst the florist will deliver many types of flowers and probably roses.

What then, can the lawyer do? In the medium and long-term, the law can provide a lot of support and protection to our loved one and the wider family.

We can care for our loved ones in a real and long-lasting way by leaving a will that provides certainty as to who inherits from us when we die, without taking any risks that the

Law of Intestacy might not achieve.

Many people can lose out if a will is not made. For instance, unmarried couples must consider each other in their wills if they want to guarantee each of them rights. This is particularly important where the property is held in only one of their names.

If we are concerned that our health may be failing, or we may have difficulty in mobility, appointing each other as ‘attorney’ may be advisable so that each party in a couple can assist the other.

Before marriage or any long-term, live-in relationship, understanding responsibilities and rights of each of the parties is helpful. It is highly unusual, however, for couples to take legal advice unless they are entering in to a prenuptial agreement. Such agreements provide for what should happen if the relationship fails, and may be more effective in the early years depending on the circumstances. Advice must always be taken. Such agreements might also apply in cohabitation of unmarried couples. Declarations of Trust in Property will help.

Discovering . . . The water cart

W

e take our roads for granted today but a glimpse of conditions in past times reveals just how lucky we are. Road surfaces throughout Bourne were mainly bare earth hardened by passing horse-drawn vehicles which turned to mud in winter and dust in summer.

Wagons and coaches struggled with the quagmires created by prolonged spells of wet weather while the billowing clouds kicked up by passing traffic during dry periods was a continual nuisance for road users and home owners who lived nearby.

The parish therefore employed a horse drawn cart fitted with a large water tank and a rear spray bar which moved along road after road squirting the surfaces and dampening the dust, as shown in this photograph taken in South Street circa 1875, with the almshouses and Cavalry House behind.

Water was plentiful in Bourne during that time, an ample supply rising from underground springs at the Wellhead or St Peter’s Pool which was producing about 13½ tons, or 70 hogsheads, a minute, enough to supply the inhabitants of Bourne for an entire day as well as keeping three water mills working along the Bourne Eau, all within half a mile of its source.

Nevertheless, restrictions on the use of water during drought conditions were thought prudent and so supplies were sometimes used sparingly during the hot summer months. A local newspaper reported on

Friday 8th September 1854: “The continuance of dry weather has made the streets of Bourne very dusty and notwithstanding the abundance of water at the Wellhead, the water cart has for some time past ceased operations.”

But even when water was plentiful, the water cart was not always on hand to deal with the dust created by long dry spells as the newspaper reported on Friday 7th September 1855: “On several occasions lately, the dust in the streets of Bourne has been enough to blind you and yet the abundant supplies of water in the Wellhead and the water cart are not taken advantage of to remedy the nuisance.”

By 1857, dust in dry weather was causing such serious problems that a public meeting was held at the Angel Hotel under the chairmanship of local businessman William Wherry and it was unanimously agreed that the Bourne Waterworks Company be empowered to constantly dampen the streets down on a regular basis throughout the summer months and that the cost be charged to the parish.

The water cart therefore remained in regular use until more resilient road surfaces such as tarmacadam were introduced following the arrival of the motor car in the early 20th century.

Are We Expecting a Price Growth in the Housing Market?

A

ll the signs are there for a steady 2019 in the housing market. With more new buyers registering in January, we’ve experienced a surge in activity throughout Bourne and the surrounding villages which gives home sellers and buyers confidence in their spending. With these levels of activity comes the opportunity of an increase in property values, driven by confidence in the housing market.

Brexit continues to make longterm and strategic decisions difficult for UK-based businesses and homeowners. Yet both the UK economy and its housing market registered around 3% annual growth in each of the first three quarters of 2018.

Since the last troughs in GVA* in Quarter 4 2009 (Q409) and house prices (Q109), both indicators have risen by a similar magnitude of 36% and 42% respectively.

The relationship between the two indicators, using annual % change on a quarterly basis, suggests a correlation of some form does exist, with changes in house prices lagging by approximately three months.

GVA recorded a slight uptick in annual change in Q318 (4%), yet Gross Domestic Product (another measure of economic performance) indicated that the economy was starting to slow.

The consensus of economic forecasters (OBR, IMF, NIES and OE**) for total GDP growth in 2019 to 2022 is however positive at 7.2%, with 1.8% expected to be confirmed for 2018. Ernst and Young’s Regional and City Forecasts for GVA predict that London and the South East will

continue to outperform in terms of annual GVA growth until at least 2020. *One widely-used indicator of overall economic performance is ‘Gross Value Added (GVA)’.

Tough Action Against Scammers

By Eileen Le Voi - Safe Local Trades & Services A new crackdown on scammers has been launched across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough with the aim of making the county scam-free.

The Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Against Scams Partnership (CAPASP) includes Cambridgeshire Constabulary, Police and Crime Commissioner Jason Ablewhite, Cambridgeshire County Council and Peterborough City Council.

At the recent launch event, Police and Crime Commissioner, Jason Ablewhite, said: “Scams are becoming a part of our everyday lives but they shouldn’t be, as they are fraud and fraud is crime. Being a victim of this crime can have a devastating impact. These crimes often target those people in our communities that are vulnerable for a variety of reasons, including poverty, isolation, frailty, or disability, and this new partnership aims to look at how we can work together to make it harder for these criminals to continue to operate in our area.”

Eileen Le Voi, Director of Safe Local Trades – which has been championing the consumer for over a decade – said: “As a member of the partnership, I am committed, on behalf of Safe Local Trades and Services, to this far-reaching charter. Free Up Storage Space on Your PC

Thankfully, most systems these days are fitted with large disk drives providing lots of storage space, but as we create ever-increasing image and video files, even some of these large drives are beginning to fill.

There is probably a lot of storage space being wasted on your PC though from temporary files and unrequired code. This space can be easily and safely recovered using Windows 10 inbuilt tools.

To achieve this…

• Click on the Windows symbol at

bottom left of your desktop and click Settings (shaped like a cog).

• Now select System then Storage.

• Click on Free Up Space Now. Your system will now be scanned.

When complete, various areas will be listed where disk space can be recovered. Some of these will be significantly large (in the example shown, old Windows Updates are taking up over 9Gb of storage space).

Windows will automatically select sections which it has determined are safe to remove.

• To start this process click on Remove Files.

The clean-up will begin and the process will show status; Purging: Windows Update Clean-up.

Once the process has finished, the system will have recovered the amount of disk space specified earlier; in the example shown, a chunky 10.2Gb. For those that remember 3.5” floppy disks that equates to over 7250 of them.

For many with modern systems, the installed disk drive may well be ample but if you are starting to struggle with disk space, this is a relatively fast and painless way of recovering space lost needlessly.

“Deal or No Deal”......that seems to be the question! By the time you read this, I hope we will be nearer to a resolution of where we are going on Brexit. After the festive period, where the issue took a back seat, (What a relief not to keep hearing that word that did not exist a couple of years ago!) the thorny word is now back on our lips and minds. What seems certain is that everything is uncertain...... still!

The run-up to Christmas and the New Year was busy for Christine and I, with Carol Services and other seasonal events filling our calendar. As Mayor, it was a thoroughly enjoyable time proving, once again, that Bourne can deliver and put on a show as good as anywhere in the country, in particular, where our lights are concerned. I am told that visitors from around the district, including nearby towns, make a point of coming to Bourne to see our display.

YOUR COUNCIL MATTERS • Following the introduction of a consultation on the changes to car parking restrictions in Hereward Street, discussions are taking place with officers at Lincolnshire CC to meet the concerns of residents. The Town Council has resolved to contact both the managing agents for the

Burghley Centre and SKDC to endeavour to establish whether there is any possibility of securing residents’ car parking facilities within the existing car parks, following the introduction of the charging policy by the Centre’s landlords.

• The Council is to write to SKDC to notify them of the interest expressed in securing the protection of the rail bridge within the Elsea Park development area, it being one of the few structures remaining from the local railways’ era.

• Subject to a small number of issues still to be finalised, the “Bourne Cicle Festival” will take place on the weekend of August 31st / September 1st. Further details are to follow.

Thinking of Getting a Pet? Here’s Some Food for Thought

A

s spring and summer take hold, and as holidays are looming, many of us think about getting a new pet to join our households. Having a pet can be extremely rewarding and is known to have many health and social benefits. But, before rushing out to acquire your chosen animal, have you considered if you are the right owner for that pet?

There are as many reasons for getting a pet as there are different homes for them, so it is important to make sure you are able to provide the home your pet deserves. Firstly, consider how much time you are able to dedicate to their care, as well as how regularly and for how long you are able to spare your time. Some animals, such as stick insects and spiders, only require short, infrequent periods of interaction, whilst others such as dogs would rather be with you for long periods of the day. It is lovely to get a new puppy during the holidays when you can settle them into the home, and it is much easier to toilet train when you are around most of the time. Going back to school and work can be very disruptive and many pups develop separation anxiety and possibly even destructive behaviours at this time. So, if you are out of your home for more than four hours a day, a different pet would be more suitable for your family.

Are you able to provide enough space and appropriate furniture for them, whether this is a cage or sharing your whole house? Many exotic pets have very precise housing requirements and their caging can be very expensive. Discussing their needs with those more expert at looking after these animals will be very informative. Look for your local herpetological or bird society for help. Not only must your pet’s environment provide it with food, water, warmth and bedding, it must also enable it to perform its normal behaviours or else its welfare and health will suffer. You will need to research their needs and check if you are able to provide for them. A small hutch housing a single rabbit does not lead to a happy, healthy life for that bunny!

One significant consideration must also be the financial commitment you are undertaking when choosing a pet.

As well as their regular ongoing requirements of food, housing, routine grooming, veterinary bills and pet sitting, infrequent or unexpected costs may occur, and you need to be in a position to deal with these too.
