Welcome to Your April Issue. Easter- the only time of the year when it’s perfectly safe to put all your eggs in one basket! And talking of Easter eggs, this month why not take a stroll around the shops in Bourne and try your hand in our Easter Hunt competition, where a “chocolate explosion” could well be your reward? The quality of the advice and recommendations given by our contributors, month after month, is something of which we are particularly proud, here at “Discovering Bourne”. So, when someone like Taff Lovesey at Lites PC decides to call it a day on the computer-related features he has provided since 2012, then we will all miss his valuable contributions in the months to come. I’m sure we’re all ready for a break from the occasional passing reference in the news to Brexit, so it was particularly exciting to hear that, as from April 1st 2019, the UK would just ditch Brexit and join Greenland, (to become the world’s leading producer of “green energy” from melting their enormous ice reserves). Great news for us gin and tonic drinkers too! This month we include our usual plethora of fake news, real news and a brilliant idea from a talented young performer, Georgie Jones, with her “I Do Poems” on page ? – something to make that special day even more special. Read about the other B.B.C. (Bourne Bowls Club), the Galletly Medical Practice with its extension now complete, and Toft Country House Hotel with its new tea room. And finally … a friend of mine spent twenty years as a limo driver without a single customer - all that time and nothing to chauffeur it! Toft Country House Hotel and Golf Club – ‘Sleeping Giant’ Re-awakening? Six months on from having been introduced to Tom Munt, the new leaseholder at Toft Country House Hotel and Golf Course, and reporting on his ambitious aspirations to re-establish Toft as one of the leading venues in the area, it was a delight to be able to check on progress, and to meet Michael Norbury, recently appointed ‘Hotel and Events Sales Manager’. Being a local resident, Michael has been able to see for himself how there appears to be an increasing demand for hotels and the like to provide afternoon teas in our local area. The concept of travelling to a “destination tea room” for an afternoon meal seems to have become much more established recently. With this in mind then, the restaurant at the Toft Country House Hotel is in the process of being re-launched on April 2nd as exactly that, a welcoming, family friendly, destination tea room. Until recently, this large room has been used for residents’ breakfasts, evening meals and small functions which did not require the space offered by the adjoining George Suite, (a very popular venue for parties and wedding receptions.) Needless to add, here lies the issue – one large room boasting two huge windows, (one overlooking the beautifully maintained gardens, and the other on to the patio with its top-quality furniture), but with relatively few customers setting foot in it for most of the day. By transforming this space into a “destination tea room”, therefore, the aim will be to enable the public more than ever to appreciate that Toft House is not just “the golf course with the bar across the road”! The room, however, will still be available for evening meals, private hires and functions, as required.

Between Tuesdays and Sundays, from 7am and 6pm, the new tea room will offer a comprehensive range of speciality teas and coffees, alongside many food options, and not just “light-bites” and cakes. The Breakfast Award 2018-19 from “Visit England”, praising the quality of the Hotel’s breakfast offering provides the encouragement that what will be available from the tea-room will be of high quality, locally-sourced and produced in-house.This tea room innovation is amongst several other ideas which Michael was eager to explain to me. A repeat of 2018’s summer weather will see the patio and gardens, leading off from the tea room, become much more child-friendly, whilst the feasibility of a marquee for al fresco wedding celebrations is already under investigation. It could be said that Toft House Hotel and Golf Club, the ‘sleeping giant’, on Bourne’s doorstep, is starting to re-awaken!

Beautifully Original Idea from Bourne’s Georgie Jones – “I Do Poems” Georgie Jones is a poet and writer. She has recently finished twelve months as ‘Resident Artist’ at the Roundhouse in London, during which time she developed her first longform poetry show,‘Ish’, to be debuted at the Brighton Fringe Festival in May this year. She has performed to sold-out theatres in London, on the Poetry Stage at ‘Bestival’ and Channel 4 film screenings. In 2017, two of her best friends got married and asked if she would write a poem to be read at the ceremony. She said, “Yes, of course”, although this was totally new territory and felt much more momentous than anything she had written before. After lots of conversations, and even more cups of tea, she wrote; Love and be loved and leave love between the pages of your favourite books, sew it into hemlines, and swallow it alongside the first morning’s sip of Yorkshire Tea from underneath warm sheets. Tell it your postcode and give it your spare key and request it stops by unannounced. That’s just the beginning of a much longer poem, but it went down brilliantly and, several recommendations later, Georgie’s business,“I Do Poems”, was born; a bespoke service, creating personal poems for weddings, celebrations and events. So, how does it work?

Georgie says, “Like most good things, it starts with a big chat and a cup of tea. The tea, unlike the chat, is non-compulsory but I like to opt in. We’ll discuss the occasion, purpose and recipient of the poem; meanwhile, I’ll be scribbling notes and asking lots of questions, many of which may seem inconsequential, but it’s the tiny details that help to make each poem so personal; it’s about capturing the little things, the seemingly insignificant things, the quirks. Then I’ll squirrel myself away somewhere and write. When it’s finished, I’ll send you the poem in both written and audio form, (I always think it’s nice to hear it and it helps with performance if the poem’s going to be read aloud).If you’d like to make any changes, this is the time and we’ll keep going until you’re completely happy.”

Don’t allow yourself to be tempted It could well be that you still have sugary, fattening foods hanging around the house. If that is the case, YOU WILL eat them! Instead, give

them away to the local food bank, freeze them or, at the very least, put them in a box and seal it up, to be opened when you have reached your goal. The thirty minute rule! Time is precious. Plan your activity schedule and put it in your diary. Did you know that, if you exercise for thirty minutes, three times a week for four weeks in a row, you are 80% more likely to achieve your goals? It may be only thirty minutes, but if you do not put it in your diary, you will probably let other things get in the way. Put this at the top of your priority list, arranging other events around it, and you will see and feel the difference! You are far more likely to stick with your eating plan if you are keeping the thirty minute rule

Develop a good sleep routine Sleep is where the body resets and burns fat. Cut down your “screen time” in the evening and try relaxing in a hot bath instead. Give yourself the time to relax and recuperate from the pressures of the day and treat yourself to some essential bath oils, rather than fattening snacks. Five Steps to Healthy Feet

my Leverton is a member of the podiatry and chiropody team at the Wellhead Practice. She has experience in both the NHS and private practices, is a member of the Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists, and is registered with the Health and Care Professionals Council.

“Feet are extremely complex,” Amy says, “but there are five really simple things people can do to maximise foot health”. 1. Wear the right shoes “It sounds obvious, but wearing good quality and well-fitting shoes is really important,” advises Amy. Poor footwear can cause common problems like corns and calluses, but can also contribute to more chronic, biomechanical disorders like plantar fasciopathy (heel pain). Feet also expand over the course of a day, so another tip is to avoid shoe shopping in the morning, or you may find that your new shoes are too tight by the afternoon! 2. Cut your nails correctly “At the Wellhead Practice, we are very experienced in surgical procedures for onychocryptosis (ingrowing

toenails),” Amy says, “but you can minimise the risk by ensuring you cut your nails correctly and regularly”. The best technique is to cut straight across the nail and avoid any curves. The Wellhead podiatry team offer professional nail cutting and care, which is particularly beneficial for those with limited mobility. 3. Keep your feet clean and dry “Most people know that keeping your feet clean is important, but drying them well is also vital,” Amy says. Fungal infections, such as tinea pedis (athlete’s foot) are very common, but can be tricky to treat. Drying between your toes is a good preventative measure for fungal problems. 4. Check your feet regularly Your feet take a lot of abuse and, when running, the pressure of up

to four times your body weight goes through them. As a result, Amy advises regular check-ups, particularly for higher risk groups, such as those with diabetes, poor circulation or lack of sensation. 5. See a professional Amy says that is too easy to ignore, or attempt to self-treat, foot problems. “People are in the habit of seeing dentists and opticians, but people often come to us, only when their problems are more advanced, which can make treatments less effective, so getting professional diagnosis and advice is the key. Brains Love Junk Foods We know that junk foods are bad for our health, so why do we eat them?

like eating a whole box of chocolates or a whole pizza, instead of cooking a healthy meal.

Our brains are hard-wired to make you want to engage in behaviours which you find pleasurable like eating tasty foods, having sex and socialising. These are all vital for the survival of our species. So, when you eat tasty junk foods, your brain’s reward system is activated and releases a brain chemical, a neurotransmitter called dopamine. When we feel the sensation of a dopamine rush, it gives us that good feeling of pleasure and satisfaction. When eating lots of rewarding foods, our brain adapts by making more receptors for the dopamine.

“HOOKED” on junk foods

So when we make more dopamine receptors, we need to eat more of the rewarding junk foods to get the same ‘good’ feeling, similar to how addicts can develop a tolerance to drugs, alcohol or smoking. The brain wants us to eat tasty foods and then it wants more, and more! Satisfaction becomes harder and harder to achieve. “Junk foods make us impulsive” Our attention is drawn towards what feels good, and, in a world full of junk foods, it can be difficult to resist temptation. Dopamine keeps us in a never-ending cycle of eating junk foods which have little or no nutritional benefits. In our brain we have a decision-making centre which is called the prefrontal cortex, which controls our behaviour. Eating excess junk foods can damage prefrontal cortex function which then leads to impulsive behaviours and poor decision-making,

Combating these temptations is difficult when faced with the strategic placement of treats by supermarket checkouts, chocolate muffins in your local coffee shop, or bold adverts for fast food. All of these trigger us to want these foods and they can be hard to resist. Supermarkets are specialists at making us make impulsive choices and so we get “hooked”. Junk foods can weaken our memory, as the high levels of refined sugars and the wrong saturated fats in junk foods create a state of inflammation in the brain that damages brain cells. The brain’s memory centre, called the hippocampus, struggles with remembering new information. Cells (neurons) in the hippocampus form connections that are constantly being reorganised, the process called neuroplasticity. This helps us learn and form memories in response to the endless flood of information in our vibrant world. The Galletly Practice – Extension Complete, New Faces and Extended Access

We are pleased to announce that our premises expansion programme was completed on January 21st, when we took possession of an additional ten clinical rooms and our state-of-the-art operating theatre. This expansion provides capacity for an additional 15,000 patients within Bourne, and therefore secures the healthcare needs for future residents of the town. This month we will commence a short programme of refurbishment for our eleven remaining clinical rooms, so that all consulting and treatment rooms are of the highest standard. This programme will be completed by the end of June and we would like to apologise for any inconvenience this may cause. Please be assured that there will be no disruption to our services during this time. Of course, with all this expansion we are aware that we also promised additional healthcare professionals. Again, we are delighted to announce that we have recruited three additional GPs, two nurses and one healthcare assistant. Dr. C Manners and Dr. A Mickleburgh joined our team on March 1st, with Dr. D Margaritescu starting with us on May 1st, bringing to nine our complement of GPs. Sisters C. Klay and M. Morgan have joined our nursing team, increasing our complement to two advanced nurse practitioners, five practice nurses and, with Mrs T Davies joining our team, we now have three healthcare assistants.

We commenced our ‘extended access’ service on October 1st, which offers appointments for all patients, irrespective of where an individual is registered. This service runs from Monday to Friday, 6.30pm to 8pm. We are currently finalising discussions which will see our service expanding to include Saturdays and,

in partnership with other practices, a Sunday and Bank Holiday service too. We will announce further information, once details have been finalised. As a Practice we are very much aware of how precious time can be for our patients with busy and demanding lives. We are therefore always seeking new ways in which you may access our services. As such, we are now developing systems to allow our patients to contact the Practice via e-mail to ask for advice and guidance, and we plan for this service to go live this month. Additionally, we are looking to start trialling video consultations via Skype for business through the secure/encrypted NHS network. We hope that this will assist our patients where you feel a direct face-to-face appointment does not best meet your needs. Of course, these services will be complementary to our existing cutting-edge appointment system, which ensures same day access for all of our patients on the day you require assistance. Bourne-based Company is Recruiting Ahead of Major European Tournament Bourne-based two-way radio specialists, Roadphone NRB, are recruiting for new staff ahead of a major European sporting tournament. The company is delighted to have been awarded the contract to deliver two-way radio communication services to UEFA’s EURO 2020 tournament, which takes place between May and July next year in twelve venues across Europe. Roadphone NRB already employs twenty-five people from the local area, and the team deliver communication services to some of Europe’s largest events, including the Grand National, UEFA Champions League and Europa League finals and many other music festivals, triathlons, conferences and major events. Ahead of EURO 2020, the company will need to recruit technical engineers to work in each venue. “Don’t Lose Hope” Counselling Centre and Café Comes to Bourne Opening in the old Nat West bank building in Bourne’s Market Place this month is a forwardthinking new venture that aims to improve the wellbeing and mental health of people in the town and the surrounding areas. “Don’t Lose Hope” will operate on two levels. First, it will provide low-cost, accessible counselling for all ages. This, then, will be funded by a fantastic community café, run by volunteers and providing a space for all members of the local community to come together and connect with each other. The café is open to anyone, not just those who

may have problems with their mental health. It can be seen as the means by which funds can be raised for the counselling services on offer. The café will be open from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Saturday, and will also offer an informal listening service. Seven qualified counsellors will work from the centre offering therapy sessions on a payment scale that will mean that those who are on benefits, such as free school meals, income support or job-seekers allowance, will qualify for eight free sessions. Prices for further sessions or for those not receiving benefits will vary, depending on household

income, but will be kept affordable. We would like to thank the army of volunteers and local businesses that have helped make “Don’t Lose Hope” become a reality by providing time and resources. Young Artists to Brush up their Skills at Inclusive Art School A popular community arts project is to benefit from a £400 South Kesteven District Council grant to allow it to develop young talent – and give them a chance to join in with fun activities. ‘Born to Create’ is an inclusive art school which helps children and young people develop their creative skills and artistic techniques, to provide the community with collaborative art projects. Councillor Helen Powell, who chose the charity for Ward Member Grant support, said: “The projects from ‘Born to Create’ bring communities together using art and children as ambassadors. I was pleased to be able to support their workshops, which involve fun, high quality activities that build self-confidence and skills which can be transferred to outside the classroom. 26

Donation Helps Employment Group’s Work Cash help from a South Kesteven District Council grant is helping unemployed adults back into work. Toolbar is a volunteer scheme running in and around Bourne, giving people free pointers to widen their employability skills. The project is being supported by a £200 Ward Member Grant from South Kesteven District Councillor Helen Powell. Councillor Powell said: “Volunteers at Toolbar help clients produce CVs, write application letters, develop interview skills and plan their careers, so it makes a really important contribution. Its clients also receive the latest vacancy listings from Jobcentres and local agencies, plus free internet access for job searches. It relies on donations so I was glad to support what they do.” The project, which costs around £3,500 a year to run, is also supported by Bourne Town Council and the Social Justice Fund. The service runs from 10.30am to noon every Monday at Bourne Snooker Centre on Cherry Holt Road. As well as helping find work, Toolbar offers an opportunity to relax over a free cup of coffee and a free game of snooker or pool. Community Park Upgrade Thanks to £665 Donation A play area on a rapidly growing estate is set for improvements, thanks to a £665 donation from South Kesteven District Councillor Robert Reid. The money, from his Ward Member Grant fund, will replace grass safety matting with all-weather Fibrefall at the Hexham Avenue play area on Oak Spring Gardens in Bourne. Councillor Reid said: “With the community continuing to grow in this area and many families moving in, there is a real need for somewhere for the youngsters to go and unwind. It’s great for them to get outside in a safe environment and I’m pleased to be able to help a cause which is close to my heart and to support Elsea Park’s continuing growth.”

The Potting Shed Although April is a lean month for fresh vegetables, it is a good month to get ahead by sowing seeds indoors or outside in cold frames and under cloches. If you covered your plot over the winter months, the soil may well be warm enough to plant and sow certain crops directly outdoors. The weather should be warming up now, but don’t get caught out by the night frosts; Easters in the past have often been colder than Christmas! A more useful job this month is to prepare seed beds, ready for sowing. If you forgot to manure in the autumn, you can still add really well-rotted manure or compost, but dig in thoroughly. Soil should be broken down into small, even particles; stones and woody material removed, raking the soil over until you get a fine “tilth”: don’t rake when the soil is too wet. If you are sowing, remember - if the soil is dry, water the base of the drill generously before sowing; if wet, sprinkle a thin layer of sand before sowing. You can sow several seeds indoors; chillies, peppers, celery, courgettes and summer squashes, runner and French beans, sprouting broccoli, Florence fennel, courgettes and summer squashes and sweetcorn are just a few. If you do grow any seedlings in trays or modules and they have grown a couple of “true leaves”, prick them out and move to individual pots or larger modules. You can also harden off young plants by putting them outdoors on sunny days, but bring them back in at night or put them in a cold frame or under cloches. • Don’t forget to regularly hand weed or hoe around seedlings as the weeds appear, as they create a lot of competition for food and moisture. • Make sure that fruit trees, canes and bushes are kept watered as any fruit planted in the last 18 months is susceptible to drought damage. Adding mulch around the base will help. • Sow maincrop peas and make the last sowing of summer broad beans. • Put up pea sticks and build cane supports ready for climbing beans while the ground is still soft.

Will You Make the Right Pension Choice? by Adrian Hallas DipPFS, Independent Financial Adviser

n April 2015, the government gave you the right to decide how to spend your own pension pot. If I talked you through the legislation, you would be asleep by the end of the first paragraph. So let’s look at a scenario and possible outcomes resulting from different choices. Bob was a divorcee, father of one, in poor health, and who had worked at Acme Construction for twenty-five years until retiring at the age of sixty-five. Two years prior to retirement, Acme gave him a pension forecast of £9,000 per year plus a tax-free lump sum of £60,000. Choice 1: He took the company pension because that’s what all of his colleagues did. He used £40,000 of the tax-free cash to pay off his mortgage and the remainder to supplement his income until his state pension age of sixtyseven. Bob died eighteen months after retirement, having spent only £74,000 of his pension pot worth £330,000. The remaining £256,000 is now in the hands of the pension company. His daughter received no inheritance.

Choice 2: Having been given a transfer value of £330,000, Bob decided to transfer to a ‘personal pension’ so he could flexibly access his fund. He took a tax-free

lump sum of £82,500 and used £40,000 to pay off his mortgage. He spent the remaining tax-free cash on a pioneering treatment that increased his life expectancy. Now acutely aware of his mortality, he paid himself an income of £20,000 per year and enjoyed his retirement until his fund was exhausted at the age of seventy-eight. Surviving on the state pension until he died at the age of eighty-seven was not so enjoyable. His daughter received no inheritance. Choice 3: Bob transferred to a ‘personal pension’ to flexibly access his fund. He took a tax-free

lump sum of £82,500 to pay off his mortgage, purchase a car and supplement his income for two years. He calculated that if his investments made a real return of 2% a year he could take an income of £11,000 per year. If he survived to the age of eighty-seven, there would still be £73,000 in his fund to leave to his daughter. If he died at the age of sixty-six, his daughter would receive £235,000. Would you have been happy with the outcomes of choices 1 and 2? Your pension could be the largest purchase of your lifetime. Make an informed choice.

Time To Change Our Cohabitation Laws ?

There have been many changes in society in the last century since the time when some, and then all, women could vote. Family Law has similarly moved with the times … but slowly! Under the Matrimonial Causes Act 1973, the concept of “irretrievable breakdown” arrived. In 2004, The Civil Partnership Act allowed same-sex couples to register their relationship and have access to rights and remedies, the same that applied to married couples. In 2013, same-sex couples were finally allowed to marry. There is now a case for “no fault” divorce, especially following the well publicised case which was in the media before Christmas. We await developments as to that, but legislation would have to be agreed. In the case of Owens v Owens, Mrs Owens was denied a divorce and all the remedies available at court for finances. Unfortunately, although married couples do have remedies, those rights are not available for the unmarried.

This can mean that the economically less well-off party may be compromised. It is only where a person can establish clear property rights under the title to a home, including perhaps a separate deed declaring the parties’ interests, that they might be better positioned. Maintenance cannot be claimed except in relation to a child or perhaps the Children Act. As women usually adopt the responsibility for caring for children, (not exclusively

of course), it is they who are discriminated against unless they marry. Married parties also have considerably more allowances to mitigate Inheritance Tax liability. Last year in a study, the number of cohabiting couples had more than doubled between 1996 and 2017 to 3.3 million. Whilst we are waiting for the law to catch up, clients should protect one another in wills and on the property title.

As OAPs Set to Rise to 1 in 3 of Bourne’s Population by 2037 – Where Are They All Going to Live? Over the next 18 years, the over-65 population in Bourne will grow by 40.9% - a lot more than the overall growth population of Bourne of 12.4% over the same time frame. Looking at Bourne and the local authority as a whole, there is a distinct under-supply of bungalows and retirement living (i.e. sheltered) accommodation. The majority of sheltered accommodation fit for retirement is in the ex-local authority sector, whilst the majority of private sector bungalows were built in the 1960s/70s/80s and are beginning to show their age (although that means there is often an opportunity for Bourne investors and Bourne ‘buy to let’ landlords to buy a tired bungalow, do it up and flip it/ rent it out). In the medium to longer term, we need to build more bungalows and sheltered accommodation and, if we do that, that won’t only be of benefit to the elderly population

of Bourne – it will have a direct knock-on effect to the younger and middle-aged population by unlocking those family homes in which the older generation homeowners live.

April 2019 Update

Microsoft’s next big Windows 10 feature update is about ready to launch in the next few weeks. Codenamed “19H1” and probably annotated as v1904, this release brings with it very few new features but, allegedly, many improvements. Effectively though, this is a maintenance update focussed on existing features and improving security and usability. The current list of changes include: • A new ‘Light’ theme for the desktop.

As with previous updates, it can take months to fully roll out to users so don’t be surprised if you are still on the previous, well into the summer. Lawn Bowling For Everyone Bourne Town Bowls Club are inviting everyone to come along and enjoy bowling at their bowls green at Coggles Causeway. It is on the sports playing area Abbey Lawns. Exciting Club Development Programme The Club are delighted to be working with the Bowls Development Alliance on an exciting project which will encourage members who already have an interest in bowls and others that have never played the game before to have fun, make new friends and get active. We hope to inspire more women to join the bowling community and enjoy the playing and social opportunities the sport has to offer. Look out for the Special Events that the Club will be providing during the 2019 season! Come and join in the activities! Facilities and Equipment are Provided The Club are eager for all ages and genders that will help new social bowlers and encourage families and young people to enjoy the sport. The Club are providing bowls and Club members will coach new bowlers. Every new bowler will enjoy 3 bowling taster sessions free of charge. After this

Through the generosity of a number of sponsors the Club has acquired sets of training bowls and a range of bowls suitable for all ages and genders that will facilitate new social bowlers. This will encourage families and young people to enjoy the sport. Adding Social Bowling into the Mix The Club members are wanting to break the current mould of traditional bowls clubs to make Bourne Town Bowls Club a community facility that is available to everyone whilst maintaining the traditional serious bowling in leagues and competitions. There will be social bowling which will not require bowlers to have their own bowls or to dress to formal requirements. There will always be the traditional serious competitive league and competition bowling. Social Events There are monthly social events including quizzes, bingo, a strawberry tea, hog roast and other events that are a good way for members to enjoy themselves and get to know one another. The club is Fully Licensed. Wives ,Partners and friends are always made most welcome. All Business and Community Groups are welcome The bowling facilities can be enjoyed by other groups in the community. The U3A,(University of the Third Age), have a group that has been bowling for two years and the number bowling has risen from 15 to 35 who thoroughly enjoy bowling every Thursday morning throughout the year outdoors in the summer and indoors during the winter. Team Building

are taking place to put in place facilities that will ensure that wheelchair users can access the club to bowl and to enjoy the lovely environment. Active Groups of Young People Schools and clubs such as scouts, air cadets, army cadets, youth clubs and youth groups generally are invited to book sessions. Taster Sessions for New Bowlers Wednesday evenings 6pm to 8pm and Sunday afternoons 2pm to 4pm will be available for use by young people and the community at large. Discovering . . . The Ostler memorial

ne of the most imposing of our historic monuments is now hidden away for safe keeping in the town cemetery, a grand memorial originally erected in the market place at Bourne to remember John Lely Ostler, a wealthy businessman who served this town well 150 years ago. The unveiling of this magnificent drinking fountain financed by public subscription was one of the biggest public occasions ever observed and took place during the autumn of 1860, the only example of a freestanding memorial erected in this town outside the churchyard. Ostler was born in 1811 of a distinguished family from Grantham and trained as a lawyer but soon became one of the biggest land and property owners in Bourne and was principal shareholder of the Bourne and Essendine Railway Company. He died on Monday 27th June 1859 by which time he was a very rich man and his many holdings included commercial premises along the banks of the Bourne Eau in Eastgate, the Maltings in West Street as well as extensive land interests at Dyke and Cawthorpe. The direct connection of John Ostler with Bourne was therefore a very short one yet during this period he achieved a reputation for his charitable acts and philanthropy, the welfare of the poor, the building of

a school at Dyke in 1854, the donation of land for the Eastgate school in 1856 and the provision of a site for the Bourne Waterworks Company, a connection which was to be pivotal in the choice of his memorial, a drinking fountain standing 18ft 6in high on three steps of Yorkshire stone while the main monument was built from Portland stone with shafts of red polished Aberdeen granite and a continuous stream of water falling into an ornamental basin. This marvellous example of Victorian Gothic stood in the market place for 100 years but by the mid-20th century, the horse had given way to the motor car and the memorial was in danger of impeding traffic flows. It was struck several times by passing vehicles and Bourne Urban District Council decided that in the interests of road safety, it should go elsewhere and in 1960 workmen dismantled the structure stone by stone and moved it to its present location in the South Road cemetery. The fountain was listed Grade II in July 2007 and the town council subsequently initiated a ÂŁ9,000 restoration scheme to ensure that this monument to one of our most illustrious benefactors will be preserved for the future. School News Bourne Westfield and SaJoNi School, India – A Promise for the Future Children from Bourne Westfield are using a link with a school in India to expand their knowledge and understanding about life in another continent. The cultural partnership was initiated when both schools were looking for ways to give their children authentic learning opportunities, which they could actively develop, and a fun way to explore what it means to be a child living in another part of the world. Naresh Raghavan, a STEM ambassador and the programme architect said, ‘This programme is aimed at providing a direct interactive environment with world cultures of interest and allow young minds to experience, explore and interact with their peers on the other side, in a safe and secure manner.’ The project started in October 2018 when teachers from both schools met over Skype to discuss their hopes and plans for the project, and both schools decided to exchange a box of items which would give the children more information about their respective schools. The children from Bourne Westfield worked hard to collect examples of plant life, school uniform, curriculum details, school certificates and awards, book bags and journals amongst other things, and also wrote letters to the children in India. In turn, children from SaJoNi India sent a wide range of articles, including hand craft materials, their school uniform, the school menu, a

tour guide of the school campus, a list of birds and animals that children see every day and letters from children. Mr V.Ganesan, the Academic Advisor of SaJoNi, said, ‘Our children were quite excited to see their counterparts across the globe during the meeting and the parcel to them was just a new beginning for their intellectual connection between two schools on a longer run in the years to come.’ The children eagerly awaited the arrival of the box from India and each school shared the opening of the contents during a Skype call where the children came face to face with each other for the first time. Rebecca Beavis, Bourne Westfield’s Arts Director said, ‘This was a very magical first meeting. The children were able to see each other’s first reactions to the contents of the boxes and then ask questions. They all came away from the meeting full of enthusiasm and very excited.’ One of the children from SaJoNi school in India said, ‘It’s not quite often we get to know friends like this. Thanks SaJoNi and BWPA team.’ Since this initial exchange and Skype call, both schools have exchanged Christmas cards. Teams from the schools are now busy working on plans to develop the exchange further.

Bourne Westfield Takes to the Stage On Saturday March 9th, fifty-seven talented musicians from Bourne Westfield travelled to Boston to take part in the ‘Music for Youth’ regional festival. Both the choir and the rock band performed alongside schools and colleges from across the county to a packed auditorium which included music industry judges. Both groups were given positive and encouraging feedback from the panel, who noted the choir’s “very professional presentation, and well-rehearsed performance”, along with the rock band’s “strong 58

rhythmic playing and teamwork”. Arts Director, Rebecca Beavis, said, “The children were amazing and both groups gave strong performances. Churches Together in Bourne Organise Their Third Family Fun Day For the past two years, the Churches Together in Bourne committee have organised a Family Fun Day on the Recreation Ground. Last year, over three hundred people attended which was fantastic and, for our third year, we are hopeful that it will be even more! Our thanks go out to all who support these events including South Kesteven District Council, The Len Pick Trust, Bourne Tesco and, of course, everyone who came along! Back by popular demand, we will have the burgers and sausages freshly cooked from the barbecue and the Salvation Army’s emergency vehicle will also be available for teas and coffees - with the cake stall just next door! During the afternoon, there will be the opportunity to listen to musical performances and watch the ‘Open the Book team’ as they bring the message of Jesus to us with a dramatisation of one of the wellknown Bible stories. The bouncy castle will also be back - as well as the face painting, glitter tattoos, giant floor games and colouring for children to enjoy throughout the afternoon. Come and join us for a day full of fun on Saturday May 25th, 12 noon till 3pm – and don’t forget there is no charge for this event!

Universal Credit – Still Work to be Done Some research carried out nationally by Citizens Advice shows that improvements have been made in the administration of Universal Credit, but more changes are still needed. Over the past two years, various changes were made to the way Universal Credit payments were made, such as cutting the waiting time by a week, and providing bigger advance payments, which have benefitted clients. However, Citizens Advice research shows that half of the people they helped still had to borrow from friends and family, or fell behind on bills. Universal Credit is paid monthly, but many who work or claimed the old legacy benefits were used to getting paid more often, and the change creates budgeting challenges.Too few people have access to the different ways of being paid, like getting payments twice a month. Only 14% of the people helped nationally over the last year knew that more frequent payments were possible, although 80% of those who weren’t told about it would have taken the option if they had known. Of the thousands of people who visit Citizens Advice nationally, it was found that people claiming Universal Credit have just £2 left over each month after paying for essentials, (rent and food), compared to £12 for people who claim the “legacy benefits” that it replaces. People often claim Universal Credit because something disruptive is happening in their life, like losing a job or ending a relationship. This can create huge financial pressures, and Citizens Advice knows that many people don’t have savings, so quick access to financial support is needed. People who have been helped often struggle financially, well beyond the first few weeks of being on Universal Credit.

Website Showcases Bourne CiCLE Festival A new website has been launched for Bourne’s first CiCLE Festival, later this year - www. bourneciclefestival.com. As activity builds towards the festival, organised by South Kesteven District Council, the website has details on the four major cycling events taking place over the weekend, (August 31st – September 1st) - men’s and women’s elite races, a time trial and an amateur riders’ sportive.

Communities along the route have the opportunity to arrange events to celebrate the race, such as a village barbecue, race bunting, and painted, or even knitted, cycles along the route. Easter Bunnies Easter has become a time when parents often buy rabbits for their children as pets. However, rabbits are not easy pets and, for young children, may be completely unsuitable. Many buy dwarf rabbits in the belief they are easier to handle, but these are often much faster and bouncier than expected. Larger rabbits such as Lionheads and Lop-eared rabbits are usually more docile, though heavier to handle. Giant rabbits are a recent phenomenon and really are for specialised owners as they have greater housing and health needs. Rabbits need a large shed with a run attached. A small hutch with a miserable bed section and open fronted area is far too small. Even those with two tiers do not cater for a rabbit’s needs although it does allow them to have a separate toilet area – rabbits are hygienic animals. Rabbits need plenty of space to run around, stretch, jump and behave as rabbits do. In open runs, place tubes and boxes for them to jump over and hide in. Rabbits also need company and you should never buy just one; pairs of rabbits are best. Just do make sure you know which sexes you are buying, as many owners have come a cropper when they’ve bought two rabbits

and one morning there are suddenly six in the cage! Sexing young rabbits can be very difficult though, so if you are unsure of what you have, bring them to the surgery for a second set of eyes. If you are keeping one of each sex, then at least have the male neutered, for obvious reasons! Rabbit obesity is becoming a real problem in this country as many assume the normal shape of rabbit is like Peter Rabbit. Rabbits should be lean to be healthy, so NO MORE than an egg cupful of pelleted food a day. Think of this as a treat rather than the main food. Unlimited, good quality hay not only keeps a rabbit’s guts healthy, it is important in maintaining good dentition. Rabbits’ teeth grow all the time and they are designed to constantly grind down hay and grass to stay the proper shape and angle. Never give grass clippings though, as they ferment in the guts. Vegetables and herbs such as broccoli, spring greens, dandelions and parsley are delicious for rabbits. And of course, fresh clean water every day. Remember to vaccinate your rabbit against myxomatosis and rabbit haemorrhagic disease to protect them in the coming months.

Up until last year I have, along with most I think, watched our achievements in sport, standing proudly as our National Anthem is played, singing loudly with our winners, without any real knowledge of the content of the second verse. During my term as Mayor and through the numerous Civic Services attended, this verse has become significant, mainly because I have had to attempt to learn it. Standing with the congregation, some in tune, everyone with head held high singing the anthem’s first verse, then, in contrast, noting the change as the introduction to the second begins. At that point, heads drop and the fumbling starts, as “Orders of Service “ are rustled in the hope of finding the wording, unknown to most of us. Are we the only nation that does not know its full anthem? Spring events gather momentum. Christine and I travelled to a dinner at Melton Mowbray as the only attendees from “the east” and, amongst others, a trip “up north” to Market Rasen on a windy Sunday. Blimey, it’s cold “up north”!

YOUR COUNCIL MATTERS • With regard to recent local press articles and developer consultation on plans to develop 110 homes at Beaufort Drive, our District Council, SKDC, has delegated its site allocation process to the Town Council and neighbourhood team, who are currently undertaking a review of all possible sites. This process is necessary in order to meet the Government’s and SKDC’s requirement for an additional two hundred homes to be found in Bourne, over and above those already consented to. Once the exercise is completed, any recommendations will be put to the full Council and the town for consideration. • If you are interested in becoming a Councillor at May’s election, please contact the Council on 01778 426123 or e-mail clerk.bournetc@btconnect.com. for details. • If you know of any individual or group that have made a beneficial contribution to the local community, in whatever form, and deserve recognition, please contact the Town Clerk, Ian Sismey, as above. Again, and to be as inclusive as possible, should we not now be referring to “Hymns and Hers”?
