Introduction

Welcome to Your May Issue. This month’s welcome comes with a big smile, as National Smile Month 2019 takes place between May 13th and June 13th. This is the U.K.’s largest and longest-running campaign, to promote good oral health. At times we struggle to find things to warrant a smile, (no references this month to Brexit, remember!) so it’s worth remembering that it’s much easier to smile than it is to frown. Don’t forget … life is like a mirror- we get the best results when we smile at it! The breadth of subjects covered in our “Discovering” magazines is often a favourable comment which comes our way. Our regular contributors never cease to amaze with their enthusiasm, knowledge and ability to produce something both readable and most useful. Many thanks to them and to you for the messages of support and kind words we receive.

Claire x

Already a third of the year gone and a few days of serious sunshine have brought out the shorts and shades, but then fleeces have soon followed! This beautiful time of the year sees new life re-emerge from winter, and gardens become a kaleidoscope of colour … unless your dogs are like ours and your patch resembles a First World War battlefield – mud, craters … the lot! We can now look forward to longer and warmer days, especially when two of them are Bank Holidays, where we can hopefully enjoy some quality time together with family and friends. Our Events section can be, as ever, your first port of call for that special event to attend. Let’s hope that this month’s collection of articles and wise words from our knowledgeable contributors will help you make the most of what is on offer in the weeks ahead. And finally, Last week, I ordered a chicken and an egg from Amazon … I’ll let you know. Then I had a pelican curry – very tasty, but you should have seen the bill! Enjoy the words.

The Potting Shed “Ne’er cast a clout till May be out,” says the old English proverb. We sometimes get lulled into a false sense of security and think that summer has arrived, but watch the weather in case of late frosts, and protect any tender seedlings. Also take care to harden off plants that have been grown indoors or under cover before planting. May is a difficult month to judge, as the weather can vary between heat and mini-drought to late frosts, heavy rain and strong winds. This month sees more pests appearing: aphids, slugs and snails will all be out in force and regard the new seedlings and young plants as a scrummy free meal, sampling your crops before you have chance to! A couple of ideas for repelling the varmints: Peppermint, spearmint and pennyroyal naturally deter aphids and ants, so plant (or put them in pots) throughout the vegetable plot. Plant flowers that attract the pest predators such as marigolds and nasturtiums. Some of us only set aside a small plot for growing fruit and vegetables so, to maximise your space, you can try: • Intercropping – sowing two crops in the same row, one slow and one fast growing. Fast growing crops include Oriental salad leaves, lettuces, radishes, spring onions, spinach and spring-planted shallots. Slow growers are parsnips, sweetcorn, tomatoes, leeks, winter cabbage, cauliflower, sprouting broccoli and Brussels sprouts.

• Catch Cropping – sowing a fast-growing crop in the brief period a plot might be empty. Other jobs to do this month include: • Earth up potatoes. • Cover carrots with netting to stop carrot fly damage. • Harden off and plant out vegetables sown earlier. • Pot on growing plants. • Put up bean and pea supports. • Pick flowers off new strawberries to prevent them cropping in their first year. • When watering young plants and seedlings, it is better to water less frequently but more thoroughly as this gets down to the roots. If you water lightly, it may only wet the surface of the soil and the roots may be encouraged to stay near the surface where they are more likely to suffer from drought damage. • Seeds to sow out this month are too numerous to list but a few include carrots, beetroot, French beans, lettuce, spring onions, salad leaves and peas. • Try “succession sowing” a small batch of seeds every two or three weeks, and you should have a steady supply rather than a glut: it will also help to maximise your chances of successful germination. • Indoors, you can sow chillies, courgettes and squashes, runner beans, sweetcorn, aubergines and cabbages.

Happy Gardening!

Property News

How to Go From FOR SALE to SOLD This May... by Jason Treadwell, Managing Director, Newton Fallowell

Newton Fallowell’s Top Tips to Achieve the Highest Price From the Sale of Your Home! The first 10 seconds… Make sure the entrance hall is free from clutter. Shoes and coats are the worst offenders here, along with the occasional vacuum cleaner. Give the impression that storage is no problem and tuck them away in a suitable place, (or even in the car!)

Keep the garden under control Whatever the season, ensure the lawns are kept cut and the borders are free from weeds. It all adds to the appeal of a garden that anyone can maintain, even if it has taken you all weekend to get it looking like it is!

De-clutter If you’re not using it, or it’s not supposed to be there, your potential buyers don’t need to see it. Make your home as well-presented as possible to give the best impression.

Let there be light Keep your curtains and blinds open for plenty of natural light. At night, ensure any lights that are hard for us to find are left on, and make sure all the bulbs are working.

Call in the “window” cleaners Make sure your front door and windows are squeaky clean. This gives any potential purchaser the impression that your home is loved, looked after and you are proud home-owners.

Who let the dogs in? Keep the house as pet-free as possible. Not everyone is looking for a home with pets and can be put off by their presence (and remnants!)

Change is Coming in Matrimonial Law

There was some good news during April regarding our divorce laws. The old so-called “Fault” based system, which has survived untouched for forty-six years, is to be changed. The parties will only need to state that the marriage has broken down “irretrievably.” This means that they will no longer need to argue “unreasonable behaviour”, comprising four or five allegations which can inflame a relationship at a time when matters are already strained. Further “adultery” will not need to be argued, nor “desertion” or “two year” or “five year” separation. Most practitioners will agree that these changes are long overdue. This leaves the parties to concentrate on resolving the finances. All parties are encouraged to seek guidance from ‘Relate’ if there is a prospect of saving a relationship, so a balance is to be struck between preserving what can still be saved as against unnecessarily making an emotional atmosphere worse by damaging allegations. The

government has said that it will now change the law. However, the old system survives until that time. What is always going to be crucial is that the parties should give serious consideration to obtain a Financial Order to protect them in relation to the monetary matters and property issues in the marriage. If they do not do that, they will potentially be

vulnerable to the other applying to court for such an Order, perhaps many years later, long after they have tried to move on. Sometimes, it is possible to obtain a so called “Clean Break” Order which confirms the agreement reached but closes the door as to further claims between the parties. As with most things, everything depends on the facts of the case, and legal advice should always be taken.

Mothered Earth

– Gardens Transformed by the Experts Established by Bourne resident, Roz Jones, in 2016, Mothered Earth is a much sought-after gardening services and topiary firm, whose reputation is growing immensely with every new project they undertake across our area of South Lincolnshire. Roz is no “could-be landscaper”, but rather a niche operator whose C.V. screams out quality, creativity and a determination to succeed. Leaving Riseholme Agricultural College, over twenty-five years ago, Roz’s journey has included National Trust experience at Dorneywood and Cliveden in Buckinghamshire, where she honed her topiary skills. Then came ten years in the film industry, maintaining sets in studios and on location, before she moved to New Zealand, as Head Gardener at Palmco Gardens, Kerikeri, on North Island. Returning to the U.K. in 2015 and embracing life as a single mother, Roz was able to juggle many tasks and begin her company “Mothered Earth” in 2016. Her

creation of the wonderful sensory garden at Busy Bees Nursery in Bourne that year was an imaginative introduction to what was to follow, as she built up her business from scratch. In Roz’s words, “With over 30 years’ experience in gardening, I have a meticulous eye for detail; no job is too big or too small, and creative projects are what we thrive on”. The “we” is simply Roz and her work colleague, Mark Young, whose background is in lawn care and building work, for example, using raised sleeper beds. Roz, meanwhile, provides the creative element, with her wide knowledge of plants and shrubs. Together, they make a great team. Some glowing testimonials can be found on Roz’s Facebook, including one from the owner of a North Road, Bourne, property. “The renovation on the back and front garden has totally transformed the house,” he explains, after the “fabulous work” carried out by Mothered Earth.

The New Face of Divorce If you sadly reach the conclusion that your marriage is irretrievably broken down, unlike what happens in many jurisdictions around the world, you can’t just make a mutual decision to start divorce proceedings. In this country, you still have to apportion blame or wait for a minimum of two years from separation. Even then, you need the consent of the other spouse without which you have to wait five years. No fault divorce was first introduced by the Family Law Act 1996 but was later considered unworkable and repealed. There has been a movement for reform ever since and demands for change mounted after the Tini Owens case last year. Mrs Owens had filed for divorce on the grounds of her husband’s unreasonable behaviour but she failed, right up to the Supreme Court, to provide 18:00 sufficient evidence of that behaviour being unreasonable enough, and the divorce was thrown out. She has had to wait for the expiry of the full five years. Mrs Owens’s situation was highly unusual and it is very rare for divorce proceedings to be contested. Nonetheless, it is not a good start to ending the marriage when you have to raise allegations of unpalatable behaviour which often sets the tone for the rest of the case. The new law is likely to require that just one of the spouses gives notice that the marriage has broken down and the separation period is reduced to nine months. The government is committed to reforming divorce law in the next parliamentary session, which starts in May. Whether the recent turmoil over Brexit will derail this timetable is another matter. But the push for reform is now very strong. The other major divorce reform introduced recently is modernising the process, namely the ability to apply online for the issue of a divorce petition. These are already coming through the system, but in the early stages. Currently, you still need to satisfy the grounds for divorce or it will be rejected at decree nisi stage. You must also be careful that you fill in the sections about applying for costs and most importantly, applying for financial orders. If you have any queries or doubts about the process, contact a Family Law specialist.

Treat your Family and Home to Beautifully Softened Water With hard water you have to use more product to get a good lather, which can aggravate and irritate the skin. As well as being abrasive, hard water doesn’t necessarily wash the entire residue off. This residue can be left on the skin which can worsen dry skin conditions. The NHS website lists “water especially hard, chalky water or heavy chlorinated water” as a common irritant of contact dermatitis.

Morris Water Softeners is a family-run business based in Northorpe. The company has been going for over thirty years and is now one of the leading suppliers in the UK. We can supply all types of water softener and other related drinking water products. We also supply and deliver salt for all types of water softeners and we are especially proud of the personal service we offer our customers. What are the downsides of having hard water? New research has revealed the link between hard water and skin conditions like eczema. Scientists at the University of Sheffield and King’s College London have proved that hard water damages the skin, raising the risk of infection and potentially contributing to the development of eczema. The study, which we were asked to fund, proves what we’ve known here for years; when it comes to skin conditions, softened water can make all the difference. Minerals in hard water, the same culprits behind limescale, were shown to make skin more sensitive to irritation, but when researchers used softened water in their study, they found that softened water could reduce these negative effects. It could even lower the risk of eczema developing in the first place. For people living with chronic skin conditions, this research could be a game-changer, especially when one in five children is affected by eczema.

How does a water softener work? In brief, it is designed to remove calcium (scale) and magnesium (scum) from hard water. They are installed at the point the water supply enters the premises and treat the whole house, therefore resulting in: reducing the cost of your soap/detergent, removing existing limescale, preventing the build-up of limescale in your hot water system as well as around your taps and reducing your fuel costs and heating system costs. The 9 wonders of having a water softener: Bigger bubble baths, Cheaper bills , Fewer products, Perfect cups of tea, Glossier hair, Longer-lasting appliances, Shinier home, Softer skin, Better for the environment. Let us make your home sparkly, your cuppa tastier, your skin silkier, clothes softer and your appliances last longer, all the while saving you money along the way! To fully appreciate the difference soft water makes in your home and for free expert and impartial water advice, call 01778 394830 or e-mail us your questions.

Bourne Homeowners Have Made an Annual Profit Of £5,423 Since the Millennium

As we go full steam ahead into 2019, it’s certain that the Bourne housing market in 2018 was a little more restrained than 2016 and 2017 and I believe this will continue into 2019. Property ownership is a medium to long term investment so, looking at the long-term, the average Bourne homeowner, having owned their property since the Millennium, has seen its value rise by more than 322%.Since the 1990s, making money from investing in buy to let properties is easy as falling off a log.

Over the last ten years, we have seen the role of the forward-thinking agents evolve from a person collecting the rent to a more all-inclusive role; I call it, ‘strategic portfolio leadership’. Thankfully, along with myself, there are a handful of agents in Bourne whom I would consider exemplary at this landlord portfolio strategy. If you would like such advice, speak with your current agent – whether you are a landlord of ours or not – without any cost or commitment, feel free to drop me a line.

Oddfellows Give Youth Group Huge Cash Boost After News of Council Cuts would have a devastating impact on the local community, and wanted to help, however we could.”

After months of fundraising quizzes, the Nene and Welland Branch of the Oddfellows has raised £3,000 for Deepings Youth Group, which is based on Eastgate. The local friendship society chose Deepings Youth Group as their charity of the year after hearing about huge government cuts which would prevent the Youth Club from receiving any council funding. This amount was raised by Oddfellows members and guests over the past twelve months through raffles, dinners and events, and will contribute towards the running costs involved in providing a safe and welcoming space for young people. Andrew Spencer, Social Co-ordinator for the Nene and Welland Branch of the Oddfellows, said, “We live in a very rural part of the UK, and there isn’t a huge amount for kids to do of an evening. When we heard about the cuts affecting the Youth Club, we knew that it

Cass Wales, Youth Group Manager for Deepings Youth Group commented on the donation: “It’s wonderful how the community has come together to help us continue running the youth group. With this donation, we’re able to ensure that the kids have great equipment to use, in a welcoming environment.” With over 200 years’ experience of helping its community, the Nene and Welland Branch of the Oddfellows understands how important a safe place and a warm welcome is for people, regardless of their age. Andrew continued, “We hope this donation goes a long way in making Market Deeping a great place to grow up. As a group, we meet regularly so we can stay in touch with others, share some laughs, as well as look out for each other.”

From coffee mornings and craft sessions to lunch clubs and guest talks, the Nene and Welland Branch of the Oddfellows holds regular events and activities in the area. “We’d love to welcome some new faces to our group,” added Andrew, “and we’re always running a wide range of events – some social, some fundraising, but all designed to encourage friendship and a strong sense of community. If you’d like to come along and give us a try, you’re more than welcome!” To find out more, and to receive their latest events diary, contact Andrew Spencer on 07729 519 122 or e-mail andrew.spencer@ oddfellows.co.uk. Mother’s Day Competition Winner In our March edition, we asked, “Is your mum the best mum in the world?” Amanda Markham sent in a beautiful tribute to her mum, Mary, which won Mary a bouquet of flowers for Mothering Sunday, courtesy of Stephanies of Bourne. Extracts from “Why my mum is so special to me” by Amanda Markham: “Mary lives for her family. She will 22

turn 80 this month and celebrate 60 years of marriage. Her family is her world, and she brings them together as much as she can. Every Sunday morning for the last 30 years she opens her house to her whole family for a full English breakfast, (children, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren – sometimes up to 20 at a time!)”

“She says that, for her, every Sunday is a Mother’s Day because we all gather together to be with her and Dad, and that is why she insists on doing her big open-house.” “She is the most fantastic role model to her four daughters and their families.” may 2019

The Repair Café – Community Spirit in Action A new local community project, The Thurlby and Northorpe Repair Cafe, has been set up to match volunteer ‘repairers’ with people who need items repaired. The Repair Café initiative started in The Netherlands about ten years ago and there are now over one thousand five hundred Repair Cafés around the world, promoting the reduction of waste, the recycling of items, and the passing on of repair skills to those interested to learn. Stu Brett first heard about the scheme several years ago and had always thought it would be great to set one up locally, so he finally got round to speaking to a few local people about it to gather interest in helping out – and it has snowballed from there. Stu set up the Thurlby and Northorpe Repair Café with two main objectives - firstly, to promote the ethos of the Repair Café organization in recycling, repair and re-use; the second, and possibly more important, was developing a community event where locals could come along for a chat, grab a cup of tea and a piece of cake, even if they didn’t have anything that needed repairing! The Thurlby and Northorpe Repair Cafe is currently the only Repair Café in Lincolnshire, and they meet in the afternoon of the last Sunday of every month in St Firmin’s Church Hall in Thurlby. When Stu approached the Reverend of St Firmin’s, she kindly donated the use of the hall for the sessions, as she was delighted with the chance to support such a great community idea. The volunteers have a great range of skills, enabling them to: repair small domestic electrical items and small pieces of furniture, carry out basic repairs and servicing to bicycles, undertake sewing repairs, and offer a sharpening service for hand and garden tools. When repairs are not possible, volunteers are able to confirm whether items are beyond economic repair, hence allowing positive decisions to be made on disposal and replacement.

Toolbar – An Apology In our April issue, we reported on the donation made to help Bourne’s Toolbar group, aimed at helping unemployed adults back into work. I have since discovered the fact that District Councillors Judy Smith and Jane Kingman have also kindly donated to the Toolbar from their Ward Member Grant. Furthermore, unfortunately the reference to “free access to Universal Fitness Studio” was incorrect. The sessions do actually incur a reduced fee. Our apologies are offered for these inaccuracies. – Editor. may 2019

In addition to repairs, they can offer advice on domestic electrics, heating and plumbing, cycles, and furniture repairs. The range of repairs on offer depends entirely on the skills and experience of the volunteers, so they are always keen to hear from anyone who would like to come and help out! All repairs are free and conducted on a “bestefforts” basis. So far, they have successfully carried out repairs on kettles, irons, vacuum cleaners, portable heaters, coffee machines, wooden chairs, wooden tables, school trousers, small wooden ornaments, antique wooden toy bowling balls, as well as sharpening garden shears, hedge trimmers, secateurs and kitchen knives! Finally, they are supported by other great volunteers around the village who have undertaken poster design, printing and distribution, baking cakes to sell and raise funds, and serving refreshments at each session. If anybody would like further information, please e-mail thurlby.repair.cafe@gmail.com, follow the Facebook page (Thurlby & Northorpe Repair Café) or come along to one of their future sessions (April 28th, May 26th, June 30th, all from 2pm to 5pm).

Happy New Year!

- by Richard Ash & Matthew Biggs - Liberty Partnership Ltd

24

New Years in April, are you sure? No, I’ve not been drinking! I am, of course, referring to the start of the 2019/20 tax year. Working in the financial services industry, many people will tell you it gets rather hectic whenever the tax year draws to a close; however, a lot people let it pass by without a second thought. We see this as an opportunity missed, as each year we are given various allowances and we believe everyone should be looking to utilise these to their full potential.

savings in a tax-efficient ISA, where you won’t be subject to Capital Gains Tax on any growth, and also pay no Income Tax when you need to dip into it?

Take ISAs, for example. Each year, the government sets the allowance on how much money you are able to pay into one in that tax year. This is currently £20,000. Now, I know not everyone has £20,000 ‘lying around’ but we all like to save money, so why not take advantage of this allowance and ‘wrap’ your

You also get an annual allowance for pension contributions. This is the amount you can pay in, and benefit from the tax efficiency of a pension. Currently, this allowance is set at 100% of your earnings or £40,000, whichever is lower. We feel a pension contribution is a valuable weapon in the financial

D I S C O V E R I N G

planning arsenal, but is incredibly underutilised. Not only do you receive tax relief on any personal contribution you make, but it also extends out your basic rate income tax band, which is currently 20%, by the amount you personally contribute. So, if you’re currently a higher or additional rate taxpayer, you may be able to reduce your tax liability – great!

Bourne

Although it is now too late to take advantage of these allowances in the 2018/19 tax year, the good news is that all the allowances reset as of April 6th. If you feel you have missed out, and would like to learn about all the advantages of utilising the available tax allowances, then please contact the office on 01778 342291 to arrange a FREE initial consultation with one of our highly trained and experienced advisers.

CYBERCRIME has reached epidemic levels in the UK – with police reporting that more than £190,000 a day is lost by victims. The hacking of social media and e-mail accounts is rife, and according to Action Fraud, (which is run by the City of London Police), £34.6million was reported to be stolen from victims between April and September 2018; an increase of 24% on the previous six months. Over 13,000 people in the UK reported cybercrimes over the six months, with more than 5,000 of those having had their social media or e-mail accounts hacked – costing victims £14.8 million. Closer to home, an initiative to crackdown on scammers across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, and aim to make the county scam-free, is gaining momentum. Safe Local Trades is delighted to be supporting the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Against Scams Partnership (CAPASP), which is committed to working towards stamping out scams; from postal to online fraud to telephone scams and doorstep rogue traders. In the case of cybercrime, fraudsters trick internet and e-mail users into giving personal details, including financial information, in order to steal their money. Some kinds of online scams to be aware of: • Phishing: where you receive an e-mail that pretends to be from an authority (e.g., your bank) in which you’re asked to give out your passwords or personal information such as your address, telephone number, or other data. • Pharming: the fraudulent practice of directing online users to a fake website, which mimics the appearance of a real/ legitimate one. • Romance Scams: a confidence scam whereby a criminal displays fake romantic intentions towards a victim in order to gain their affection to then extort money. • Impersonation of UK officials: criminals impersonate a UK official to obtain personal information by claiming that the victim is due a refund or must make an urgent payment. • File Hijacking: where a hacker enters your computer and accesses your files, locking you out of them. The hacker then demands a ransom (usually money) before he will give you your files back. • Screenshot Managing: where hackers enter your computer and take screenshots of your display. This can help them get information about you, get passwords, or even blackmail you. • Keylogging: where hackers can record your keystrokes on your computer, thus gaining your passwords or other personal information. • Ad Clicking: where hackers encourage you to click on a link (perhaps by e-mail, or on a webpage) which will then open malware or simply ask for your personal information. However, you can take steps to help protect yourself. • Ensure that your devices all have up-to-date anti-virus security. • Install a firewall and anti-spyware on your computer. • Ensure that you update your software (including Windows or iOS) when prompted to do so; postponing an update can leave you vulnerable. • Ensure that your devices are password-protected with a strong password - you can find the official governmental advice on creating passwords at www.cyberaware.gov.uk/passwords. If you think you or a loved one may have been the victim of a scam, report it to Action Fraud at www.actionfraud.police.uk . To find out how you can sign up for the fight against fraud, and read some tips on spotting a scam, visit www.safelocaltrades.com/ consumers/advice/friends-against-scams.

Your Finances

Why on Earth Would You Use a Financial Adviser? by Adrian Hallas DipPFS, Independent Financial Adviser

L

et’s be honest, financial advisers are not held in great esteem. Mis-selling and opaque charging structures have quite rightly led to widespread mistrust of the financial services industry. My own dealings with an adviser twenty years ago left me in no doubt that the advice offered was not serving my best interests. That is why, when I left my job as a commercial helicopter pilot, I decided to retrain as a financial adviser and establish my own firm. So, has the industry reformed itself since my negative experience in the late ’90s? Well, the intention has certainly been there. The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) introduced the ‘Treating Customers Fairly’

initiative and moved to principlesbased regulation. Since 2013, commission-based charging for pension and investment products is no longer permitted. As in any industry, there are many that apply the rules in the spirit they were intended, some that interpret the rules to their own ends, and a few that ignore the rules. Unfortunately, the task of differentiating the good firms from the poor ones falls on you as the customer. However, you could be missing out on potential gains by maintaining a belief about financial advisers that is no longer justified. Are you guaranteed to increase your wealth by employing a financial adviser? Of course not.

However, you should significantly increase the chances of meeting your financial objectives. An adviser does this by determining the minimum level of risk that you need to take and are willing to take, with consideration given to your ability to withstand financial loss. So, should everyone employ a financial adviser? Well no, because clearly there are occasions where product and advice charges can outweigh the benefit provided by the advice. However, before charging you a penny, a good adviser will assess your situation and determine if it is in your best interest to take advice. With this in mind, why would you not use a financial adviser?

Always in your best interest Independent Financial Advice, that puts your best interest at the forefront of every recommendation.

Where Does the Time Go? Make the Most of Every Day. by Claire Saunders, Renu - Health, Beauty & Fitness

O

ur lives are a large collection of single days, one right after the other. The sun rises, the sun sets, and it rises again. And in the end, the lives we choose to live will be determined by how we choose to spend each day. It can seem that one day, it’s new year and the next, we are changing the clocks and preparing for the summer. The next step is summer days ahead, holidays, swimsuits and revisiting summer wardrobes. Making a simple plan for each individual day, rather than long-term objectives can help you enjoy life and achieve your goals. Here are ten simple steps that will help you make the most of every single day.

1

Get a good night’s sleep – Take a look at your sleeping habits. You will have a much more productive day after a good night’s sleep.

5

2

6

Eat right – Put your health and wellbeing at the top of your priority list.

3

Exercise – Research shows that just twenty minutes moderate exercise can make you calmer, happier and more equipped to deal with whatever life throws at you today.

4

Accomplish one big task – This may be as simple as one of the above! Set one task, not three, and feel good when you have achieved it.

Do one thing that you love – Hobbies and doing things that you love breathe life into who you are. Do one thing that you love every day. Rest Effectively – Rest is as essential to your body as water and air. Schedule some time to rest in your day and don’t feel guilty about it.

7

Be present with others – Put away distractions, engage in conversations and ask questions.

8

Give to someone else – Invest your life in someone else every day. Help a co-worker, fund a local charity or just make that phone call to a friend who needs to hear from you

9

Nurture your soul – Find time each day to appreciate your surroundings and be grateful. Our lives are more than flesh and blood.

10

Reset – Tomorrow is another day with great potential and opportunity. Take time each evening to appreciate the good things about today and make a plan for tomorrow. At Renu, we offer an opportunity for you to make the most of every day, with space for rest, exercise, wellbeing and hobbies you love. If you would like to see more of what we have to offer, please see our website www.renu.uk.com.

Make the most of every day and do something you love You can join our ladies gym and enjoy unlimited virtual spin classes for just £20 per month with no joining fee. Studio classes also available for all ages and abilities. Call 01778 423923 for more details or visit www.renu.uk.com

Professional Ear Care and Safe Syringing by Jane Russell RGN BSc(Hons) INP

Y

our ears are just as important as your eyes and teeth. Whilst most people will visit an optician and a dentist at least once a year and sometimes more for a check-up, the ears tend to be neglected.

Good hearing and healthy ears play an important part in your quality of life. If you have ever experienced reduced, or even lost your hearing for a short period of time, then you’ll know just how frustrating and lonely it can be. For some people, this could make them feel very vulnerable, especially if they live alone. If you feel you have a problem with your ears, don’t just ignore it. There are many conditions that can affect your hearing, such as ear infections or ear wax build up. Some are very straightforward to fix and generally, as with so many other things in life, the sooner you have them checked, the sooner you can get back to normal. Ear wax is completely normal; it is produced by the ear to provide protection. Ears are actually self-cleaning and you should never attempt to remove the wax yourself. Although it can be tempting, using items such as cotton buds can actually push the wax further down the ear canal and end up totally blocking your ear. The cotton wool tip can even damage your ear canal..... as can matches, hair grips and twigs! To help reduce the chances of problems with your ears, you should always try and keep them dry and protected from water. Using an ear plug when you go swimming or even showering is advisable. Wet ears can cause eczema, dermatitis, runny ears and infections. You could use cotton wool as a plug BUT ONLY if you smear it with Vaseline to ensure you do not damage the ear canal with the fibres. If you have an ear problem, it is recommended that you see a trained, competent practitioner in ear care. They have specialist equipment that allows them to see into your ear canal with the correct lighting, and are able to provide the correct and safe treatment. For ear wax, ear syringing / irrigation, when performed by qualified practitioners, is safe and effective. Please do not try internet “do it yourself ear syringing kits”.

Ear clinic now available Thursday and Friday

Effective treatment does not necessarily mean expensive treatment. At the Wellhead Practice, Jane Russell offers patients an initial assessment for £10. Your ears will be examined, and you’ll be given recommendations, ranging from general advice to suggested treatment. Ear syringing starts at £30.

been caring for ears ever since. Amongst many nursing roles in her career, until two years ago, Jane was part of the NHS Intermediate Care Team in Bourne as a community Matron. From January 2018, she has been running an ‘ear care’ clinic on a Thursday and Friday at The Wellhead Practice where she has been busy providing ear care advice and ear syringing treatments.

Hypnosis for Procrastination Putting off until tomorrow what you could do today is this familiar?

same immediate appeal as shopping, indulging in an addiction, social media, slumped in a chair, or caffeine.

Life today is full of distractions: phone alerts, e-mail, social media, 24 hour shopping or entertainment, and it’s everywhere; it’s a bit like a rabbit hole waiting for you to go down, to spend large chunks of your day or waste your whole day away.

“Tug-of-war between your present and future selves.”

People who procrastinate have a tendency to choose shortterm gratification over long-term, more worthwhile goals. They do this regardless of whether the delay has serious health, academic or financial implications. Chronic procrastination is not a mental health diagnosis, but is related to:

Procrastinators are engaging in a constant tug-of-war between your emotionally-driven, pleasure-seeking, current self, who would rather watch TV than say go to bed, and the rational, reasoning, future self who ends up being tired the next day, due to lack of good quality sleep the night before. So you are letting your future self down. There’s a difficulty in bridging the gap between the present and future self, which is one factor that may contribute to the mood and behaviour regulation failure that drive us to procrastination.

• increased stress/anxiety

Overcoming distraction with hypnotherapy.

• poor grades in school

Hypnotherapy is a powerful tool for overcoming procrastination; it empowers you to gain access to the deeper, subconscious part of the mind, speaking to it directly. Hypnosis allows you to nourish the subconscious with new information, removing those negative-thinking patterns that are holding you back, helping you to train your mind to get into the zone, focusing on the task in hand, and allowing your mind to be quiet, and getting things done. Hypnotherapy also helps to improve general lifestyle and make changes to improve sleep, healthy eating and stress which are all energy stealers. Once you increase energy, your motivation increases too, allowing you to just get on with things effortlessly.

• poor health • addictions • poor performance at work • failing to reach important goals. University and college students procrastinate up to 46% and report they procrastinate on specific academic tasks, whilst about 10% to 20% of adults in the general population are chronic procrastinators. “Procrastination and self-control are closely related.” Procrastination has often been attributed to poor time management, but chronic procrastination is due to poor self-regulation. The prospect of enduring a tax return, exam, the housework or odd jobs just doesn’t have the

Discovering . . . the Bourne Institute

Rex Needle

T

he imposing building on the corner of St Peter’s Road is a perfect example of Victorian ostentation.

No 63 West Street was once a farmhouse but during the 19th century its wealthy owner gave it a Gothic style façade, the porch containing ballflower decoration and wheat sheaf capitals while the date 1872 was included in the arch rosette above the upper window on the side of the front. The owner’s initials J G are also visible to the discerning eye in a similar position above the upper central window. This reminds us that the original red brick house and grain store attached once belonged to John Gibson, a corn merchant and brewer, who improved the property in that year, adding the imposing stone front and stained glass windows that depict the four seasons of the barley growing cycle which is also featured in the decoration over the front door. He lived there with his family for 25 years until he got into financial difficulties and in 1896, the premises were rented out to a newly formed social organisation in the town which began after a public meeting had been called by leading citizens and an elected committee was empowered to secure suitable premises for the purpose. It became known as the Bourne Institute, a non52

sectarian, non-political organisation intended to stimulate healthy recreation, education and mutual intellectual improvement, and to provide facilities for a wide range of social activities including a music room with a piano, musical and debating societies, billiards and other games, and a modest library. The new venture was an immediate success and in 1899 sufficient money had been raised to purchase the property. By then, the institute had become the focal point for the town’s social life and although membership was originally confined to men, ladies were being admitted by the end of the century. In July 1953 one of the rooms was leased to Kesteven County Council for use as a branch library for Bourne at an initial rental of £1 a week and although the original agreement was for a five-year period, it continued until 1969 when the town’s present library was opened in South Street. Snooker had by now replaced billiards as the most popular game at the Bourne Institute and in 1975 it was renamed the Pyramid Club, an organisation owned by its members and which still flourishes today. Stamford Shakespeare Company – Top Quality Theatre on Our Doorstep

Throughout the summer, from June 11th to August 31st this year, the Stamford Shakespeare Company presents a season of plays at the stunning Rutland Open Air Theatre. Described by ‘The Sunday Times’ as “One of the finest things to do this summer”, and ‘The Stage’ as “One of England’s premier alfresco theatre venues”, it really is an experience not to be missed. This summer the Company are proud to present three fantastic plays: Set in Albania in the early 19th century, garnished with live music and glorious costumes, Shakespeare’s greatest comedy, “Twelfth Night”, containing some of his finest comic characters, is a merry tale of unrequited love, shipwrecked twins, cross dressing, mistaken identity and drunken revels. The hilarious antics of roguish Sir Toby Belch, foolish Sir Andrew Aguecheek, pert Maria and prim Malvolio will delight audiences, young and old. Shakespeare’s epic tragedy “Julius Caesar”, where political and military rivalries spiral out of control, is one of his most gripping plays and features some

of his greatest characters. In this powerful drama set in Ancient Rome, Brutus and Cassius, fearing the growing domination of Julius Caesar, plot his death. But when, on the Ides of March, the dictator is assassinated, Mark Antony unleashes the rage of the people against the conspirators. Noel Coward’s “Blithe Spirit”, a wonderful, supernatural comedy set in the late 1930s, portrays the trials and tribulations of novelist Charles Condomine, who foolishly holds a séance to research his latest book. When the eccentric medium, Madame Arcati, accidentally summons the spirit of his first wife, Elvira, his life descends into chaos. How will Charles cope, caught between two wives, one dead, the other very much alive? The theatre is situated in the grounds of historic Tolethorpe Hall, where last summer over 33,000 people experienced the magic of a visit to this unique venue. Enjoy a picnic in the glorious gardens, then take your seat, protected from summer showers, and see a stage like no other.

Bourne Footlights present

‘CURTAIN UP’ By Peter Quilter

‘C

urtain Up’ is the hilarious story of five women who inherit equal shares in a dilapidated theatre and plan to bring it back to life again. They try various fund raising schemes but their most ambitious is to hold a concert featuring local talent and a world-famous star who agrees to appear for no fee!

Mayor

Words from the Mayor David Mapp

+DJ

As you are no doubt aware, we have an election on May 2nd for both Town/ Parish and District Councils. During this period, up to the election day, Councillors enter a time-frame where care has to be taken on any communications through the press. This period is referred to as “Purdah”. At the time of writing, I have been made aware that in the ward in which I stand as a Town Councillor all vacancies are filled and, with no additional applicants, we are returned, unopposed. There is no need for an election in the ward. Therefore, as I am not standing for the District this time, perhaps I have a little more freedom with my communications. There does seem to be a certain amount of disillusionment with the political scene, presently; understandably so, taking into account the broader Brexit debate, but we should all consider the importance of local elections, and the impact of issues on our area and residents. On this occasion, I stood at local level as an independent. As voters, you may wish to consider whether you are better served by local candidates, from the town or, on the other hand, you may think differently. Whatever your view, your vote counts and I would urge you to use it. As the end of my year as mayor approaches, Christine and I have attended a number of services and dinners held by surrounding councils, notably, the Deepings and Stamford proving very enjoyable. I believe we have also managed to meet new contacts from further afield who we have added to the town’s circulation list which I hope will benefit future mayors and our parish. Bourne’s Town Clerk, Ian Sismey, and I also attended a one-hundredth-birthday celebration for Barbara McKechnie at The Cedars, and learned a lot about the history of this Care Home. It was very enlightening, and what a great facility for the town it is! Returning to my main theme of elections … “Purdah” is a fabulous word, isn’t it? Very evocative. To me, it conjures up thoughts of a mild, Asian, coconut curry, served with basmati rice and naan bread. Perhaps it’s just me! may 2019

School News Bourne Westfield Takes to the Stage On Saturday March 9th, fiftyseven talented musicians from Bourne Westfield travelled to Boston to take part in the ‘Music for Youth’ regional festival. Both the choir and the rock band performed alongside schools and colleges from across the county to a packed auditorium which included music industry judges. Both groups were given positive and encouraging feedback from the panel, who noted the choir’s “very professional presentation, and well-rehearsed performance”, along with the rock band’s “strong rhythmic playing and teamwork”. Arts Director, Rebecca Beavis, said, “The children were

amazing and both groups gave strong performances. The event was a great opportunity for children from

across the county to share their music, and receive valuable feedback; we all thoroughly enjoyed the day.”

Thurlby Community Primary School Our Year 4 pupils took part in a special Tudor Day in March to celebrate the culmination of their topic. The children came dressed in some wonderful costumes and all pupils participated in a range of activities. Classroom-based activities included Tudor houses craft, a collage picture of Henry VIII, the big Tudor quiz, plus a Tudor banquet with a king

and queen. The children also enjoyed playing tennis, Tudor style, and a traditional game of merelles. Great fun was had by all! may 2019

Introducing the New Volkswagen T-Cross Welcome to the family: The T-Cross is the latest practical, cool and versatile addition to Volkswagen’s fast-growing SUV range. Even more suitable for the city than the T-Roc, and more compact than the Tiguan – but just as sophisticated as both including numerous assist systems which had previously been reserved for higher vehicle categories. As versatile and practical as its larger siblings and combined with an attractive design, the new T-Cross is a flexible model with numerous customisation options and maximum recognition value – a typical Volkswagen. Numerous standard assist systems elevate this compact SUV from the competition. Always a standard feature are the Front Assist area monitoring system with Pedestrian Monitoring and City Emergency Braking System; the lane keeping system Lane Assist; Hill Start Assist; as well as Blind Spot Monitor lane change assist, with integrated Rear Traffic Alert. Optionally available are also the Driver Alert System, Adaptive Cruise Control and Park Assist. The newest Volkswagen SUV has also been innovatively digitalised: as a result, wireless charging

makes sure your smartphone battery is always sufficiently charged, encouraging you to play your favourite songs directly from your smartphone or via streaming services. The optional “Beats” sound system including features, such as a 300 W 8-channel amplifier, and separate subwoofer in the luggage compartment will impress music lovers. The Keyless Access locking and starting system is optionally available, as is the digital cockpit featuring 8-inch infotainment touchscreen and the most recent generation of the “Active Info Display”. Available in a choice of two petrol, turbocharged engines with displacement of 1.0 litres, which comply with the latest Euro 6d-TEMP emission standard. The entry-level petrol engine with 95 PS is combined with a five-speed manual gearbox, while the 115 PS variant is equipped with a six-speed manual gearbox as standard, or with the highly efficient seven-speed DSG. Compact, but far from small: be it more legroom for passengers or more space in the luggage compartment – any plan can be easily realised, thanks to the rear seat bench that can be moved by fourteen centimetres. Interior background lighting and premium upholstered seats maximise the style in the space. The carefully balanced combination of casual style, refined practicality and extreme cost-effectiveness is aimed at a young and young-and-heart public who are keen to express their positive attitude to life in a self-confident and distinctive way. However, they clearly also like to keep a watchful eye on costs and maximise benefits associated with their chosen ride. Available in a choice of four models from £16,995, test drive now at Robinsons Volkswagen in Peterborough.
