Introduction

Welcome to Your July Issue. A warm welcome to our July issue in what is turning into a rather warm summer for us here in the east of the country – although rather damp at times too! In 1935, George Gershwin penned the immortal line: “Summertime and the livin’ is easy”, and I’d like to think that, every year, we go some way to making your summer a little easier with our extensive range of interesting features, advice and a comprehensive schedule of what’s happening in our area in the weeks to come. This month there’s certainly a summer feel to what we’ve got in store for you – find out about Prosecco and a sassy barbecue sauce and we’ve even got advice on avoiding ‘post-holiday burglary blues’! Enjoy the read and enjoy the summer break and, for some of us, those exam results coming our way very soon!

Claire x

Following Claire’s musical welcome, I’ll fast forward to 1970, when Mungo Jerry were at Number 1 in the charts, with their singalong, “In the Summertime”, and the hirsute Ray Dorset would sing, “We’re always happy Life’s for livin’ yeah, that’s our philosophy”. Yes, summer is here at last, holidays are on the horizon, and I hope that you’re all finding “livin’ easy” and agreeing that indeed, “life’s for livin’”. Make the most of these long summer evenings … that rain will stop, eventually! I offer two mirthful moments this month, one an offering from our daughter, and I’ll let you guess which one is hers. When the doctor saw a piece of lettuce dangling from the patient’s bottom, he said, “That looks nasty”. “Nasty?” said the man, “that’s just the tip of the iceberg”. What did the cheese say when it saw itself in the mirror? Hallou me! Enjoy the read!

Bourne Classic Car and Motorcycle Carnival “The clue”, as they say, “is often in the name”, and Wellhead Gardens in Bourne is certainly appropriately named, as Bourne Events Team realised when it became impossible to use them for this year’s Classic Car and Motorcycle Carnival! Even though over 50% of ‘parking slots’ were lost, the Bourne Events Team, (the clue also being in the name), hosted a hugely successful Carnival on Father’s Day. With over a hundred cars at the Red Hall, a further seventy on West Street, and motorbikes in South Street car park, there were many amazing vehicles for people to admire. A diverse and bustling market gave people plenty of choice with many engaging stalls, as well as a collection of popular fairground rides.

Words from roving reporter, Paul Fellows Photographs by Alan Dolby

A performance stage in South Street car park, complemented by a ‘sound tent’ on West Street, entertained visitors throughout the day with brilliant performances from a diverse array of talented musicians, most of whom are local people. Even three ‘harsh’ downpours could not stop people enjoying the day, and it was wonderful to see Bourne and district people, as they always do, engaging in what has become one of the major events on our town’s calendar. With brollies raised and an “It’s only water” attitude, I’m sure everyone had a great day! Well done Bourne Events Team and thank you to everyone who came and enjoyed the day. It was truly an example of community spirit. And finally … Bourne Events Team would like to sincerely thank all of the sponsors and people who supported the event as, without their generosity, they just would not be able to showcase fabulous events such as this. Roll on 2020 and hopes for better weather!

group to overcome challenges and celebrate success; it is so important to a successful journey. That’s why, at my Slimming World group, there’ll be tons of support, encouragement and fun. So, don’t delay start your Slimming World Journey today”!

Tori joined her local Slimming World group in August 2015 and lost four stone within a year and reached her target weight. Tori wanted to spread the word of how easy losing weight can be, while still enjoying so many different types of foods unlimitedly.

Tori’s new Slimming World group is held every Tuesday, 9.30am at the Darby and Joan Hall. For more information, or to join Tori’s group, call her on 07849 095520 or just pop in any Tuesday at 9.30am.

In January 2018, she opened her first Slimming World group on a Thursday night in Bourne at the Salvation Army premises. She has two sessions at 5.30pm and 7.30pm, and that group has flourished with many members receiving weight-loss awards weekly, and getting ever closer to their dream weights.

or l e be slim fwith

She now feels privileged to be able to expand within the community and help more people, by re-launching and becoming the permanent consultant for the Tuesday morning group at the Darby and Joan Hall at 9.30am. Tori has said, “All the current members at the Tuesday morning group have been so welcoming towards me after a few months without a permanent consultant. I’m really proud of each and every one of them for continuing on their journeys. I know they are looking forward to welcoming some new members over the coming weeks, and so am I. “Everyone is welcome at our Slimming World group, and support is really the most important thing. As someone who has lost weight, I know the challenges people can face, which is why, along with the group, I will be there to support every one of my members all the way to their chosen target weight. It all starts with feeling that you’re not alone. We share recipes, give inspiration, and motivate each other while working together as a july 2019

Prosecco:

A Joy of Life T

here are many producers of sparkling, aromatic, Prosecco wine. For this quest, I searched for a company that produces a range of high-quality Prosecco wines, with impressive bottle presentations. “Bottega” has a very interesting history, both during the 20th century and into the 21st century. The eyecatching bottles and a great number of the wines are awardwinning. The bottles are created by artisan crafts people, and are really distinguishable. From their Prosecco range I found the following to be very impressive: Bottega Poeti Prosecco (DOC) is fresh, fragrant and has a floral bouquet. This wine is a very popular, dry production and favoured by many. Bottega Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore (DOCG) Extra Dry is another poets’ wine which is also very popular. Having a brilliant straw-yellow colour, too, this fresh and fragrant wine graces many dining occasions, regularly. Bottega Prosecco (DOC) Biologico Extra Dry is often chosen and has many devotees. This organic production is, again, a brilliant straw-yellow colour. Very fine, fresh, fruity and delicate is how

8

D I S C O V E R I N G

I would describe this, much sought-after, Prosecco. Bottega Prosecco (DOC) Fundum I found to be a splendid dry production that has plenty of fruits to please. The mouthfeel and palate sensation is fresh, with a good finish. Gold Poeti Prosecco (DOC) is a further very classy production from “Bottega”. Fresh, aromatic and very impressive, this wine comes in a magnificent gold-coloured bottle. Again, a fruity bouquet prevails, which leads, enticingly, to the wonderful mouthfeel. The palate is treated to a sensation that is impressively pleasant and memorable. Prosecco wines, having a persistent and fine perlage, are perfect for apéritifs and excellent to pair with starters, also fish, seafood and white meats. Prosecco and other wines, including grappa, plus liqueurs, along with a range of other products, are all made with much knowledge, love and devotion, so the finished “Bottega” productions are of the highest quality and quite exceptional. Welcome Trevor Langley This month, a new contributor joins our “Discovering” team. Trevor Langley will be shedding some light on a range of topics of general interest to our readers, especially those of us who are partial to a little of what is sometimes referred to as “Nature’s anaesthetic”. Here, Trevor offers a brief introduction to himself, before casting his experienced eye over a range of drink and food-related topics: “Having had a full working life in engineering and the transport industry, I now experience great enjoyment in pursuing avenues which were not open to me before, because of the lack of time. I take much pleasure in locating places, restaurants and venues, plus finding various products, all of excellent quality, connected with cuisine and for imbibing, too. I hope you will enjoy reading about some of my finds.” This month he focuses on what, to many people, has become the most popular drink on everyone’s lips these summer days – Prosecco. july 2019

Sensitive Feet As we get older, our feet change shape, and we often lose some of the natural padding on the bottom of our feet. Many conditions such as oedema, diabetes, rheumatoid and osteoarthritis, neurological and vascular disorders or kidney and heart disease can often be identified by early warning signs as symptoms in the feet. Some problems with feet develop through illness, some as a result of poorly fitted shoes. Specialist Footwear Sandpiper is a carefully designed range of comfort footwear for wide feet or people with problem toes. While shoes for swollen or sensitive feet need that extra bit of room, it is equally important that they should look neat.

Grief, Loss or Change If you’ve suffered a loss, or trying to accept significant changes in your life grief can become overwhelming. Causing high states of emotional anxiety and low states of depression. Grief is a cocktail of emotions that needs to be understood and accepted. Feeling angry is a natural reaction to death which can make us feel resentful and is a normal reaction. Hypnotherapy supports you through this emotional process and helps you, in your own time and in your own way, move towards acceptance.

Hypnosis can gently help you overcome grief in the following ways: • Reduces the unbearable intensity of your grief.

Learn how to have good grief instead of bad Grieving is a process not a permanent state and we need to go through the grief process with less stress and tension. Grief can make us feel isolated hiding away from the world because we lose our confidence making our world become smaller and smaller. Hiding away from the world is a normal reaction too, hypnotherapy helps to regain balance and helps us feel emotionally stable again allowing you to gain the confidence to interact with the world again, We all deal with grief in different ways and it often can become challenging. Grief is necessary but we don’t want it to completely take over our lives.

• Stops you from feeling angry.

Hypnotherapy for Grief Hypnotherapy is a way of giving yourself the time to find calm and peace for yourself. Allowing you to process your grief, but at a pace that is right for you. Hypnosis helps you overcome grief and loss and reach a stage where you can enjoy the memories of your loved one without being overcome by the pain of missing them. Helping you to clarify your thoughts and get things done, which will take the pressure off, and stop you worrying about whether you will be able to cope with everything.

• Helps to organise your grief so that you can grieve at your own pace but not all the time. • Helps you regain your confidence.

• Enables you to interact with the world in a healthy way. • Allows you to access a feeling of calm and strength. • Helps you look after yourself with compassion. • Helps you find a place for grief in your life which doesn’t overwhelm you. • Enables you to re-connect with the positive memories of the person you have lost. • Helps you enjoy your memories without them being so charged with painful feelings. • Helps you to move on with your life without feeling guilty. • Empowers you to be more motivated and move forward.

Q: What is one of the more everyday conditions you help with? A: Simple nail cutting. Many patients really struggle to trim their own nails. This can be due to reduced flexibility or perhaps due to osteoarthritis of the hands which makes it hard to hold nail clippers. Even inadequate eyesight can pose a problem. At The Wellhead Practice, we offer a dedicated professional nail-cutting appointment (ÂŁ23), which is ideal if your feet are generally in good condition, and you only need a trim. Q: What else do you commonly see? A: Thick nails. Trauma to the nail bed perhaps from dropping something onto the toe or even poorly fitting shoes can cause these. Treatment involves reducing the thickness using a special drill and offering advice on things like footwear to help reduce recurrence. For example, as feet expand over the course of a day, avoiding shoe shopping in the morning may prevent you finding that your new shoes are too tight by the afternoon. Poor footwear can also cause problems like corns and calluses. Fungal nails. These affect one or many nails with a discoloured and thickened appearance and are often crumbly in texture. Treatment is by applying a topical lacquer to the nail or via oral medication. As the fungus has to grow out of the nail, treatment can take several months. Most people know that keeping your feet clean

For footcare follow the logo

is important, but drying them well, which includes between the toes, is a good preventative measure for fungal problems. Involuted nails. Here the nail curves around the edges and presses into the sides of your toe. The temptation is often to cut down the sides but this can lead to in-growing nails. Letting the nails grow and clearing out the edge of the nail with an old tooth brush, using moisturising cream along the sides, may help. A buildup of dead skin, soap, sock fluff etc can put extra pressure on the nail, causing pain. In-growing toe nails. Incorrect nail cutting, direct injury or picking at toe nails can lead to a spike of nail to grow into the flesh of the toe. Treatment ranges from cutting the nail correctly and removing the spike, to removal of the side or whole nail with surgery, under local anaesthetic, (which if needed can be performed here at the Practice). Q: Anything else I should know? A: Remember to check your feet regularly.

They take a lot of daily abuse and it is important, particularly for higher risk groups such as those with diabetes, poor circulation or lack of sensation. Consult a professional. People habitually see a dentist for their teeth, an optician for their eyes, so visit a podiatrist for a diagnosis and advice for your feet. Many patients are embarrassed by their feet, but we have seen it all and treat everyone with professionalism and confidentiality. All three of our podiatrists are experienced practitioners, members of the Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists and registered with the Health and Care Professionals Council (HCPC). Rachael Baker brings thirty-five years of NHS and private foot-care knowledge, with an expertise in diabetic foot care. Matthew Phillips amd Amy Leverton treat a wide range of foot complaints, as well as having a special interest in bio-mechanical foot assessments for the prescription of shoe orthotics.

JETRide – September 22nd 2019 In 2011, Jon Egging, a pilot with the Red Arrows display team, lost his life at an air display in Bournemouth. Jon was passionate about inspiring young people through his love of flying. His widow, Dr Emma Egging, founded a youth engagement charity, JET, (Jon Egging Trust) in her husband’s name which realises his dream of supporting young people to reach their full potential. The Trust aims to help young people that may not benefit from the opportunities that most youngsters are given. It does this by developing teamwork, confidence, leadership and initiative; the aim of JETRide is to raise awareness and funds for this charity. September 22nd 2019 will see the inaugural Jon Egging Trust Ride (JETRide) launch from the Royal Air Force College at Cranwell.

JETRide is a cycle sportive that will give cyclists the option to ride either a fifty or an eighty mile route, heading off into the beautiful, rolling Lincolnshire countryside. The route runs south from RAF Cranwell, has a feed stop in Corby Glen, after running through villages such as Ingoldsby and Irnham, and then goes on through Castle Bytham, Little Bytham, Witham on the Hill, Manthorpe and Thurlby, before finally returning to RAF Cranwell. For those that aren’t of a cycling ilk, a sportive is a long distance, non-competitive ride, and this one will include individual timing, feed-stations, and a fully signed route that will take in some of the quietest and most picturesque

roads that Lincolnshire has to offer. As well as the physical challenge of riding a long distance, JETRide will allow riders to experience the thrill of riding within a large group, get fit and have a great day out. Can you take on the challenge of JETRide? The rolling countryside is ideal for those that are new to cycling, as well as providing a tough but enjoyable distance to more seasoned cyclists. To see the routes, what you can expect from the day, visit www. joneggingtrust.org.uk/JETRide and get involved!!

but also pleased to welcome new people too. We enjoyed serving tea and cake whilst some customers answered the quiz questions or entered our caption competition. The many caption competition entrants certainly didn’t disappoint, and this led to great amusement in selecting a winner. Pet and equine nutrition advice was well received from Skinners, Allen & Page, Emerald Green, Top Spec and Nettex, whilst the product offers and discounted lines were extremely popular.

Pensions and Divorce

stated value is transferred to an existing, or new, pension plan belonging to the former spouse, achieving the desired ‘clean break’.

ou clearly need a solicitor to represent you in divorce proceedings, but why would you involve a financial adviser?

First, a little background: Section 25 of the Matrimonial Causes Act of 1973 stated that a ‘clean break’ was the aim of any divorce settlement. The preferred method of achieving a ‘clean break’ with regard to pension assets was termed pension offsetting, where the pension is not divided, but assigned a value to be offset against other assets and income. The Pension Act 1995 made it mandatory to include pension rights in a negotiated divorce settlement. The Act also introduced pension earmarking which was an attempt to allow a proportion of the pension to be allocated to each divorcee. This was a messy solution that gave little control of the pension assets to the former spouse, and consequently did not result in a ‘clean break’. The Pension Reform Act 1996 introduced pension sharing which, like pension offsetting, involved assigning a value to the pension. A proportion of the

You might be wondering how the pension, to be offset or shared, is valued. This is performed by the pension provider, who attempts to calculate the capital sum required to purchase equivalent pension benefits. Unfortunately, the values assigned to parameters, used in the calculation, such as inflation, investment return etc are not standardised. Due to the length of time involved with pension investments, small changes in these parameters can significantly alter the calculated value. A financial adviser can work, in either party’s interest, to ensure that fair assumptions have been used and that mistakes have not been made in the calculation. An adviser should work with consideration to ‘proportionality of cost’, which means the potential benefits of reviewing the assumptions and calculation outweigh the fee for the associated work. In cases where the pension is shared, an adviser will also ensure that the receiving pension plan and investments are appropriate for the client’s circumstances and financial objectives.

Always in your best interest Independent Financial Advice, that puts your best interest at the forefront of every recommendation.

Why Not Let Access4Lofts Become Your “Space Invaders”? Space is critical in every home. Think of the number of times you’ve thought, “It would be good to keep this, the problem is where?” Well, how about your loft? In the average home it accounts for between a quarter to one-third of the volume. That’s a huge area that could add so many uses and benefits to family life. Perhaps it’s difficult to get into? Not floored for storage or use? Access4Lofts solve all of these problems with simplicity. We specialise in developing lofts for storage. Safe access to your loft...The majority of properties have an access hatch to the space in the loft. Access4Lofts create space the easy and affordable way. We can supply and install

a new loft hatch and a safe, sturdy aluminium loft ladder in your home in just one day! That means that your dark and dismal roof space suddenly becomes a useful storage area for all of that family clutter. My experience enables fitting the ladder and converting the access hatch, in double-quick time; the space is accessible and there’s no mess left behind. Floored and useful...Another option is to install a loft hatch and ladder and board out a decent sized area of your loft. This gives you somewhere to store the suitcases or keep your winter/summer clothes. As soon as you have this additional space, you’ll wonder how you lived without it for so long.

CREATING SPACE THE EASY WAY! We help utilise the lost space in your loft space with quick and affordable loft access and storage solutions.

Added property value exceeds the fitting cost...With the problems of moving house today, not to mention all the stress of the move, this is a simple solution which adds value to your property. With a safe ladder giving access to your loft, everybody can store their goodies away from the living area. And, if you are planning to sell your home, easy access to the loft space could give your home the advantage over other houses your buyer might be looking at. If you’d like to find out how I can transform your loft into a useful storage area, then give me a call on 01733 663207 or take a look at www.access4lofts.co.uk/ peterborough.

OUR SPECIALIST SERVICES • Loft ladders & loft hatches • Boarding, lighting & insulation

What About Inheritance Tax? - by Matthew Biggs - Liberty Partnership Ltd

When we start out in our working lives, we all look to work as hard as we can, so we can enjoy life to the full. For some, this is going on lovely holidays all over the world, for others this is being able to treat the family, and for some it is simply the knowledge that they have earned the right to enjoy themselves in later life. And, with any luck, over the course of time we will start to accrue lots of assets, be it the family home, a nice car or, in some circumstances, an inheritance from a loved one. However, all these wonderful things could end up creating a bit of a headache in later life as they might attract an Inheritance Tax bill. That said, with careful planning, it could be possible to manage any potential Inheritance Tax bill that may come your way. Of course, one of the best ways to make sure you don’t attract an Inheritance Tax bill is to spend it! However, more often than not we see clients who want to make sure their family can also benefit from the fruits of their labour. One way of doing this is to take advantage of the annual small gift allowance, currently £3,000 per year. Or, with some trust

planning, you could ensure your loved ones benefit from your hard work without the fear that some of the assets will end up with the tax man. There are many other options out there to consider and, if you would like to talk to one of our friendly and experienced Financial Planners to explore which option is best for you, then please contact our office on 01778 342291 to arrange a FREE initial consultation.

Legal Corner

Can We Avoid Complexity In Family Disputes? It is very difficult when couples are not getting on and, when all else fails, they decide to separate. Although the initial divorce procedure may soon be made a little easier by removing the concept of “blame”, the second process of resolving the finances has never been straightforward. Normally, the parties exchange documents including twelve months’ bank, building society and credit card statements, P60 or accounts; agree a house valuation; obtain a mortgage statement of funds owing; and prepare a list of other assets, average monthly outgoings, liabilities (debts) and pension values. These documents lead on to an agreed schedule of these matters for negotiations. If the negotiations fail, one party starts court action. Eventually, the matter settles. Many people do not, however, have to attend

court or commence the proceedings. Instead, they are fortunate to settle in correspondence, but this all takes time. Those that do best will have obtained good legal advice at the outset, and are frank about the need to work together to provide full disclosure in a timely fashion, sometimes shortening the process. The usual disclosure is provided to ensure nothing is hidden. However, perhaps the parties can reduce this to some extent (which does occasionally happen), although they do risk something being overlooked. This then is where the problems of divorce really

become potentially expensive. Without agreement, one party can have to issue proceedings, instead of applying for an agreed Court Order. A possible way to help is to enter a so-called “Pre-Nuptial Agreement”. However, society has traditionally responded to the concept negatively because it can look as though the parties may have “one foot in the marriage and one foot out of it”. The government is currently looking into Family Law matters and considering change.

Advice

Consumer Advice

Citizens Advice – Progress on “No-fault Evictions” Citizens Advice has welcomed the recent government announcement that it will consult on scrapping “no-fault evictions” in the private rented housing sector. Gillian Guy, Chief Executive of Citizens Advice, said: “Scrapping no-fault evictions is a groundbreaking shake-up of the private rented sector and will better protect the almost 5 million households who live in it. This means renters - including families will be able to put down stable roots where they live, and prevent landlords from evicting tenants for simply complaining.” Citizens Advice nationally helped nearly 200,000 people with housing problems last year - almost 60,000 of those in the private-rented sector. Their research found more than two in five tenants say fear of eviction prevents them talking to their landlord about disrepair. It also found that tenants who made a formal complaint to either their local authority or to a redress scheme had a 46% chance of being issued with a ‘Section 21 eviction notice’ in the following six months. They found revenge evictions have affected 141,000 tenants since laws attempting to ban revenge evictions were introduced in 2015. Nearly half of tenants (44%) who experienced delays in getting repairs done by their landlord said fear of eviction would stop them from continuing to negotiate about the disrepair. There are 1.7 million families with dependent children renting privately, according to the English Housing Survey. The Citizens Advice service in Bourne takes place at Wake House, North Street, on Thursdays between 10am and 3pm. Clients are offered a five-minute initial check, followed by an appointment at a later time or date, if appropriate.

How to Avoid Summer Fraud and the Post-Holiday Burglary Blues by Eileen Le Voi - Safe Local Trades WHETHER you’ve already booked a week in the sun, are planning a short family break, or have yet to grab a lastminute getaway, don’t get caught up in the holiday blues this summer. Holiday security is as important to add to your checklist as the usual ‘money, tickets, passport’ mantra. And there is plenty to consider; last year, holiday scamming accounted for around £7 million being ‘stolen’ from holidaymakers, according to research - with more than 5,000 people the victims of holiday booking fraud. Travel association, ABTA, said victims lost an average of £1,380 each, having bought bogus airline tickets, accommodation or organised tours. It said fraudsters were using increasingly sophisticated methods to target people looking for good deals. More than half (53%) of the crimes related to the sale of airline tickets, with scammers particularly targeting people visiting family and friends in Africa and the Indian subcontinent. One in four cases involved accommodation, such as payments to stay in upmarket villas which are either fictitious or are being offered without the owner’s knowledge. Spain and France were among the destinations most commonly affected. Before you click to confirm payment, here are some tips from ABTA, Action Fraud and Get Safe Online: • Check that the booking agent’s web address is legitimate and has not been altered by slight changes to a domain name - such as going from ‘.co.uk’ to ‘.org’. • Don’t just rely on one review - do a thorough online search to check the company’s credentials. • Check whether the company is a member of a recognised trade body such as ABTA. • Wherever possible, pay by credit card and be wary about paying directly into a private individual’s bank account. • Study receipts and invoices, as well as terms and conditions. • If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is! We can also greatly reduce the risk of burglary whilst away; a dark home in the evenings and uncollected mail is a sign to burglars that no one is at home. Also remember, before you go on holiday: • Set up automatic timer switches to turn your lights on when it gets dark. • Register for the Royal Mail’s ‘keepsake’ service. • Move valuable items out of view of windows. • Cut front and back lawns and trim back plants. • Don’t discuss holiday plans on social media. • Ask a trusted neighbour to watch over your home whilst you’re away. If you are considering installing or upgrading any CCTV security / lighting or alarm systems – or even changing the locks – Safe Local Trades & Services has many reputable traders who can help. Visit the website at www.safelocaltrades.com for details of your nearest professional trader. july 2019

History

Discovering . . . the Old Grammar School Rex Needle

I

n the early 17th century, William Trollope, a local landowner, left a bequest which provided for an endowment of £30 a year to maintain “an honest, learned, and godly schoolmaster” in a free grammar school incorporated by royal charter and built by himself. The school was sited next to the Abbey Church where it still stands although the premises have been rebuilt since his day. The present building, erected in 1678, has a brick superstructure over a solid stone foundation but it is not certain if this stonework is from Trollope’s original school or whether it dates even further back to the days when the monastery existed. The duties of schoolmaster were carried out by the vicars of Bourne until the Rev Joseph Dodsworth was appointed in 1842. He began delegating the actual work of teaching and administration to his curates until 1858 when William Webber was appointed under-master and it was his influence that provided the boys with a playground on a small area of land adjoining the school on the east side. Until then, scholars had been playing in the churchyard among the tombstones but several had been damaged and there had also been complaints about them roaming the streets between lessons. Many of his pupils went on to Oxford and Cambridge

52

universities, but he resigned in 1881 after 23 years of teaching and his departure signalled an end to the school’s popularity with the result that attendance dwindled and it closed in 1904. During the Second World War, the premises became an ambulance station and a meeting place for the Girl Guides and in later years it was used for a time as headquarters for the local troops of cubs and boy scouts. Today, it is Grade II listed within the Bourne conservation area and is currently administered by the Bourne Educational Foundation but has been badly neglected in recent years and in April 2003, it was condemned as unsafe and all entry forbidden. The roof was leaking although some remedial work was carried out in May 2007. The building has been up for sale since February 2005 and acquisition by a private developer was seen as the only chance it has to survive although there was an attempt at restoration by the Bourne Preservation Trust with the intention of bringing it back into useful life for the benefit of the town but this foundered through a lack of enthusiasm and so the old school remains in a parlous state. In the warm weather and with balmy nights, the outdoor populations of fleas are surviving well and thriving. They wait for an animal to pass and jump on, to have a good feed of blood. Unfortunately, that could be your dog, cat, rabbit or even yourself.

Flea infestations are much easier to get on top of nowadays with modern drugs. FR EE FL EA & TIC K CH EC KS Plus advice on parasite prevention!

To find out more or book an appointm ent, contact us today.

The number and variety of parasites affecting pets in the UK has changed substantially over recent years. Thanks to modern-day living with central heating, flea pupae can survive dormant in carpets, soft furnishings and between floorboards, without the pet, for up to 1 year. Lungworm has spread across the country to regions that it previously had not been seen in and a recent report found that ticks affected 1 in every 3 dogs. Call us to book your free flea and tick check, where you will also receive preventative treatment options and advice - tailored to your pet’s specific needs. To do this, we take into account the local area’s parasite make up, as well as your pet’s lifestyle, to be able to best advise you on the most suitable products. For example, does your dog swim regularly? Is your cat an indoor-only cat? Do your pets hunt or scavenge? The answers to these and other questions will help us to determine the most suitable parasite preventative care plan to keep your pet, family and home free from parasites, and the awful diseases they carry.

School News Exciting Times Ahead for Edenham C of E Primary School Since September, there have been various changes that have occurred at Edenham Primary School, including a change in leadership, and the school now working very closely with other schools within the academy. There are exciting times ahead! Alison Flack took on the role of ‘Executive Head’ in March, with Michael Pasqualino maintaining his role as ‘Head of School’. Working together, they have ambitious and positive plans to ensure all the children within Edenham will be able to achieve their own personal targets. Mr Pasqualino explained, “Edenham provides a great environment to teach and learn in. It has such a positive ethos and fantastic children with their wellbeing and education being at the heart of everything Edenham children having a first glimpse of the “30 things project”

we do. Since Mrs Flack has joined us, we have developed our relationship with her two other schools, Whaplode and Weston Primary School. This has meant that we have been able to share support and expertise across the three sites, and this relationship will help to move Edenham forwards. Most importantly, we have been able to ensure that we have kept and adapted the features of Edenham that make it so special, whilst maintaining a focus on teaching and learning.” In partnership with parents and the children, Edenham Primary School has set out a clear “30 things” that they want to facilitate all children to have experienced by the time they leave in Year 6, many of which exemplify the ethos that Edenham has – providing great experiences for its children. The list contains activities such as performing on a stage, stargazing, building a bridge to cross the school’s stream, learning to play a song on a tuned instrument, taking a photograph and hosting a photography exhibition for the local community, and many more. The school is always looking for opportunities to work with the local community, so if you would like to be involved with, or support Edenham C of E Primary School in a variety of ways, or are interested in the great work they do, please contact the admin team on enquiries@southlincshub.co.uk.

Success for Kirkstone House School Skiers Pupils at Kirkstone House School, Baston, have enjoyed success in recent school slalom races. Lucy Blackwell took the Independent Schools Association Indoor Championship title in the under 14 girls’ competition - posting one of the fastest times of the race in all categories, whilst her brother Jasper secured silver in the under 12 boys’ race. Around eighty racers took part, with schools travelling from across the country for the event held at Hemel Hempstead’s Snow Centre. On May 12th the Eastern Region Snowsports Association held its schools’ race in Ipswich. Jasper took gold in his race, whilst in the senior race, Lucy took silver, missing out on gold by only 0.09 of a second. Commenting on her pupils’ success, headmistress Corrine Jones said, “Here at Kirkstone House School, we are immensely proud of Lucy and Jasper’s achievements. 64

School News Headstart Nursery to Develop New STEM Garden Since the launch of their new pre-school learning centre in September 2017, Headstart Nursery Bourne also aimed to add STEM into the children’s learning and planning. STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) was introduced as a philosophy, as a way of allowing opportunities for children to use these four disciplines to investigate an idea or problem-solve. With this in mind, Headstart trialled different STEM activities, from creating their own outdoor weighing scales to shadow problem solving. The children loved these activities and, because of this, Headstart are now looking at developing one of their outdoor areas as a specific STEM area for all of the children to use. Throughout the year, Headstart host a variety of different fundraising events and raffles. The money raised from this will go towards resources for the STEM area.

Oh What a Night! – Local Schools’ Musical Talent on Show at Bourne Festival On Thursday June 6th, Bourne schools gathered together at the Wellhead for an evening of musical entertainment to an audience of over seven hundred! Talented musicians from Bourne Westfield, Bourne Elsea Park C of E Primary Academy, Bourne Abbey Primary C of E Academy, Willoughby School, Bourne Academy, Edenham Primary School, Thurlby Primary School and Bourne Grammar School entertained a full house, (or rather “full marquee”), for Bourne’s

first-ever ‘collaborative music concert’. Bourne Round Table loaned their festival set-up, sound engineers and staff, and Lincolnshire Music Service provided funding to facilitate this amazing event, which saw over two hundred young people perform a varied set of solos, bands, ensembles and choirs. The evening began with a primary school collaborative choir of one hundred and thirty children, all singing three songs together, led by Liz Lenten from ‘Choir Vibe’. The concert finale was an amazing performance by an ex-Bourne Westfield and Bourne Academy student Jamie Booth, who is now studying at the Academy of Contemporary Music in Guildford. Rebecca Beavis, Arts Director at Bourne Westfield and Project Lead, commented, “The event was a tremendous success. It gave our young people a rare and exciting opportunity to showcase their talents on a professional stage to a large-scale audience. It was a great opportunity to bring Bourne together and I would like to thank Bourne Round Table for giving us this opportunity.”

Mayor

Words from the (New) Mayor Brenda Johnson

Then it was on to the Bourne and District Round Table Festival on the Well head. These guys work really hard to set this up each year and, although the weather was not too kind this year, it was great to see lots of you there. Events like these help to put our town on the map, so many thanks to all who made it possible. I also attended the Salvation Army Summer Fayre. The bacon rolls went down very well, and I caught up with lots of friends and met some new ones. We then went round to see the opening of Delaine’s Bus Museum. This is another great place and has been set up by the family themselves. There is so much in there to see. Please visit when you get a chance. Sunday saw us at Bourne Bowls Club where we were shown what they had invested in from the grants from several charities in the town, as well as Bourne Town Council. We were encouraged to try the sport out and actually enjoyed it, so we will go back, when time allows, for another go. It would be great to see some of you there, as this is a sport for all, not for just the elderly. Anyone wanting to contact me, please call Bourne Town Council offices and they will get a message to me. I do still work part-time but am looking forward to a busy year. Keep an eye on the Town Council website to keep up with any events I may organise. My final plea is for all shopkeepers and businesses in the town to stay open to support the forthcoming Cicle Festival coming to Bourne at the end of August. Let’s show SKDC we have lots to offer. Also, with ‘Bourne in Bloom’ coming up very soon, you can all do your bit to help. Please ring the Town Council if you could spare some time and help us in any way. july 2019

Thirty-three years as a plasterer, thirty of them as his own boss, travelling far and wide to ply his trade, and now Dyke man, Nigel Bailey admits to wanting to cut down on his travelling if possible. A great deal of his work has been on new builds in the Huntingdon area, but now he would much rather be spending those hours on the A1 doing something more enjoyable, like plastering new builds or extensions, much

nearer to home. Nigel is skilled and experienced in all aspects of the plastering trade, be it plaster-boarding, dry lining, internal render and set or external rendering. He is happy to take on all insurance work and offers free advice and estimates, on whatever the customer is wanting to have done. No job is too small, so why not get in touch, and spare him from those dreadful hours up and down the A1?
