Introduction
Welcome to Your August Issue. For many people, August means only one thing – another school year is over, and the children (and teachers!) are enjoying their well-earned, six-week break. To all the parents reading, I’ll let you decide whether or not that’s a good thing! One way to help fill those long days in the weeks ahead will be to enter our ever-popular seaside treasure hunt in this month’s issue, for which the prize is an impressive £50. What’s more, this month we’ve compiled our annual “Schools Out” guide, whilst the “What’s on” and entertainment guide are full of great ideas too, so hopefully you won’t be hearing “I’m bored” and “There’s nothing to do” too many times this month!
Claire x
Welcome to the summer, with a glut of top class sporting events, nationally and also nearer to home, with Bourne’s very own Cicle Festival this month. I couldn’t help noticing that, following England Women’s fabulous performance in the recent football World Cup semi-final, their manager, Phil Neville rued the fact that his team had been unfortunate in being “reduced to ten men” with the red card issued to Millie Bright. I was almost willing him to add that the remaining players just had to “man up” in her absence. Funny old game, women’s football! And finally … Who was the Frenchman who invented sandals? Phillipe Phillope. I’ve just heard that vandals have stolen the “F” from the Funfair sign in our town. Now that is just unfair. Enjoy the read and have an awesome August!

That’s The Spirit:
Gin G
in’s basic flavour is from juniper berries and gin-making can be traced back to the Middle Ages. Today, many gins are widely available. There are different styles of gins, plus flavoured and very aromatic gins, too. Gin cocktails continue to be hugely popular, with many ‘devotees’. Warner Edwards are creators and distillers of hand-crafted, artisan gins. Their Victoria’s Rhubarb Gin is named because the original rhubarb crop, from which the current rhubarb crops are descended, was grown in the kitchen garden of Buckingham Palace, during Queen Victoria’s reign. The mouthfeel and palate enjoy the tangy sweetness. Also, Prosecco makes a great mix with this gin. Other Warner Edwards hand-crafted gins include their splendid Harrington Dry. www. warneredwards.com. The Cotswolds Distillery, established in 2014, produces an excellent quality, hand-crafted, dry gin, which is unfiltered, so as to retain all the flavour of the botanical extracts and essential oils. This classic production is produced in small batches and is well-balanced, with an ‘inviting’ nose of citrus amongst the bouquet’s appeal. The mouthfeel and palate continue the enjoyment, which is clean and crisp. This exceptional gin is part of their range. www.cotswoldsdistillery.com. Gordon’s is a very well-established company. aromatic. The inclusion of raspberry, strawberry and redcurrant ‘natural flavourings’, make for a superbly-balanced and often-selected gin production. There is another impressive gin, inspired by Gordon’s original pink gin recipe of 1880. This is clearly a company dedicated and committed to producing and supplying highquality drinks. www.gordonsgin.com. Chase Rhubarb & Bramley Apple is a single-estate production, from the Chase Distillery Company, which distils from the field to the bottle and has an excellent range of drinks. This gin is carefully crafted by distilling G B gin with freshly-pressed rhubarb and Bramley apple juice, which comes directly from the farm. This impressive production is perfect anytime and great for spritz cocktails. www.chasedistillery.co.uk. I located these gins at Waitrose, the food and retail division of John Lewis Partnership. Founded during 1904, Waitrose possesses a royal warrant to supply groceries and offers food and beverages of outstanding quality, many of which are multi awardwinning. www.waitrose.com. As always, enjoy!

Mayor
Words from the Mayor Brenda Johnson
Last month, we had a wonderful evening up at Grimsthorpe Castle where we were invited by the Royal Anglian Regiment to watch the beating the retreat. It was a lovely evening and there were dignitaries from far and wide. The Mayor of Boston was very taken with how beautiful it was as we walked round the gardens. Bourne Car Show went ahead despite the weather and it was a privilege to open it. From there we went on to Peterborough for their Civic Service in the Cathedral.
of office in Bourne and have touched a lot of lives for the good. It is always great to get back into our own community and we went to the Year 7 production of “Madagascar” at Bourne Abbey Primary Academy, where we were amazed by the acting and singing skills of the students. A wonderful evening, and thanks for all the hard work put in by staff, students and of course parents.
The next weekend saw us opening the Headstart Nursery Summer Fayre; having no little ones these days it was the first time I had seen the inside of this building and I was very impressed. It is a lovely facility set in wonderful grounds and well worth a visit. The staff were all very competent and caring. On the Sunday it was off to Lincoln Cathedral for the Civic Service of The Chairman of Lincolnshire County Council.
One of my charities this year is the Don’t Lose Hope Cafe in the old NatWest bank. If you have not found this pleasant little cafe yet, please drop in for a cuppa and piece of cake (highly recommended). I was pleased to be able to lend a hand when the dishwasher let them down. All proceeds go back into enabling them to help people with mental health problems. This is a facility that none of us know when we will need. The cafe is staffed by volunteers and they are always pleasant and helpful.
On June 30th, we went to The Bourne Salvation Army to say a fond farewell to the Captains Wendy and Kevin Brown who have been very busy in their five-year term
Watch out on the town notice board for my next function which will be an afternoon tea at the Darby and Joan Hall. Date to be confirmed.

Six Great Reasons to Get on Your Bike by Claire Saunders, Renu - Health, Beauty & Fitness
S
tationary fitness bikes continue to be one of the most popular pieces of exercise equipment on the market. “Spinning Classes” are group sessions, set to music with a motivational instructor to spur you on. Renu launched virtual spin classes in January and here are some great reasons to give it a try: Easy on the joints – Indoor cycling is a low impact activity. People recovering from orthopaedic injuries often participate in indoor cycling as part of the rehabilitation process. If cycling is done correctly, there is minimal impact on the hip, knee and ankle joints. A person, whether recovering from injury or not, avoids the pounding associated with other activities, such as running. Muscular Endurance – When you are pedalling against resistance in indoor cycling you increase the endurance of the muscles in the legs to include the quadriceps, hamstrings, gluteus, and the calf muscles. Working these muscles also helps to strengthen surrounding bones, tendons and ligaments, increasing overall strength, so that activities of daily living can be performed with ease. Reduced Stress Levels - We’ve all heard about the runner’s “high”. An indoor cycling class can provide that same rush of adrenaline and a release
of happy, mood-inducing neurotransmitters known as endorphins. Endorphins tend to create feelings of euphoria, lower stress levels, and enhance the body’s immune response. Cardiovascular - Our indoor cycling classes can keep your heart rate well within a vigorous range of intensity for approximately 30-45 minutes. As with all continuous cardiovascular activity, an indoor cycling programme can help lower the risk of coronary artery disease, and aid weight control. Work at your level - You can vary the resistance on the bike to suit your fitness level. Therefore, you can have several people in the class, all following the same instructor, but some will be working at a higher level than others. This means that you can build your fitness in a safe environment where your intensity level is not determined by the gradient on a hill or a head wind! No choreography to follow – You simply get on and pedal to some really motivating music. No need to worry about which foot … or going the wrong way! If you are still not sure, take a look at these comments from our clients: “I love the fact that I can just decide at a moment’s notice to turn up and do a class when it suits me.” “It feels just like you are in a class full of people, even if you are the only one in the class.” “I love the music!” “I didn’t have the confidence to join a class, but now I have tried virtual spin it has inspired me to do it much more often.”
Use this voucher to try your first spinning class FREE. Open to men and women. No need to book.

“Ask My GP”
New On-line Service from the Galletly Practice Following our most recent patient survey, the message received was that patients asked for more on-line ways of communicating with our Practice for help, guidance and administrative support related to their healthcare needs. These comments were complementary to our same-day access appointment system, which continues to receive extremely positive feedback. As a result of this latest feedback, we have been reviewing the ways in which we manage administrative queries in respect to referrals, medicines and other requests for help/guidance from our patients that are not necessarily for your GP. This review has led us to the planned introduction of a new on-line platform which will allow our patients to request help and advice, even when we are closed. The information patients will give us means the doctors – or other members of staff – are better informed of your needs and can help with your problems quicker. It will allow patients to message us at any time with no need to book ahead, gaining the information you require either that day or the next working day (if requested on a weekend) for example. So how will the system work? Firstly, all patients need to do is complete their online “askmyGP” request. Further details of this will be available on our website www.galletly.uk . This can be done either on-line or via mobile/tablet devices. This includes the option to send photos if required. A GP will work out how best to help you. This may be that we reply to you by e-mail or text if this is easier and more convenient for you. Where your request is administrative, such as referral update information, a member of our team will be in touch, with the advice. Alternatively, if you need to see
a GP/healthcare professional, you will be offered an appointment or, as in most cases, the GP/ healthcare professional may be able to help you by phone, secure message or using a video link. This latter option is yet another service we are about to start exploring – the use of on-line video consultations as a potential additional option for consulting with your GP or healthcare professional. We believe that, by adding these options to the way in which you may contact your GP Practice, it will avoid you having to make unnecessary visits, allowing you to manage your time effectively around work and other personal/family commitments. The planned date for the new “Ask my GP” service is September 1st 2019. Further details will be available soon via our website www.galletly.uk.

Incontinence – Cherryholt Mobility Can Help
Incontinence, a lack of voluntary control over urination or defecation, is a common and distressing problem which may have a large impact on the quality of life. It has been identified as an important issue in geriatric healthcare. Pelvic surgery, pregnancy, childbirth, and menopause are major risk factors.Urinary incontinence is often a result of an underlying medical condition but is under-reported to medical practitioners. There are four main types of incontinence: Urge incontinence due to an overactive bladder. Stress incontinence due to poor closure of the bladder. Overflow incontinence due to either poor bladder contraction or blockage of the urethra. Functional incontinence due to medications or health problems making it difficult to reach the bathroom. At Cherryholt Mobility, we offer a wide range of incontinence products with breathable fabric, developed to offer comfort and discretion without compromising performance.

Stop Stress, Anxiety and Panic Attacks with Hypnotherapy Anxiety can build up over a long period of time without us even realising it, or it can come on suddenly as a result of something, such as illness or a change of circumstances. Some people who have been fully in control of their lives suddenly find they can’t cope in their daily life. Anxiety and stress can manifest itself in many ways, such as nervousness, panic attacks, insomnia, and overly worrying about something that may never happen. It can have a crippling effect by bringing on a range of symptoms such as depression, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), skin complaints, or negative patterns such as over-eating, drinking, smoking etc. If left unaddressed, stress and anxiety can change lives for the worst. At least one person in ten experiences panic attacks which are often triggered by a stressful or anxious event. A panic attack happens when you experience a sudden onset of intense physical and psychological symptoms. They can occur for no apparent reason or a set of circumstances can bring about an attack. You might experience an overwhelming sense of fear, dread, anxiety or apprehension. There are often physical symptoms accompanying these feelings, including a change in breathing pattern, sweating, nausea, heart palpitations, rapid heart rate, trembling, or even a difficulty when swallowing. While they are frightening, it is unlikely they will cause physical harm, but the self-perpetuating thought of having one can stop us from doing the things we want to do or need to do, causing more stress and increasing the potential of having a panic attack.
The good news is that Solution Focused Hypnotherapy has been shown to be a very effective treatment for panic attacks, reducing the frequency in a short period of time, or sustained treatment will often result in them disappearing altogether. Hypnotherapy reduces underlying levels of anxiety, giving you greater control and reducing the emotional arousal. Hypnotherapy works with the subconscious brain templates and makes suggestions in a beneficial and positive way to make positive changes happen in the subconscious. Hypnotherapy allows guided relaxation, showing a preferred future and because the subconscious part of the brain, (the part that’s in charge of our reactions), doesn’t understand the difference between imagination and reality, the guided relaxation starts to bring calm and control back into our lives. You will learn how to prevent negative stress, how to identify increased levels of stress, and how to deal with the situation and how to prevent it reaching debilitating levels in a positive and responsible way. Whatever the cause of stress, anxiety or panic attacks, the treatment is tailored to the individual. “Regain your health, wealth and wellbeing!” If you would like to book an appointment, or find out more about hypnotherapy, contact Christine on: 0780 9690 964 or contact@ beardwoodhypnotherapy. co.uk .

My Journey to ‘Beach Body-Ready’… For me, holidays are all about spending time with the family, getting some rays, and generally appreciating what I have. This year, I am also focusing on me and I want to feel confident in my swimsuit or when out and about. I went to see Neeta at Flawless Body on Scotgate in Stamford to see how she can help, armed with a mental list of things to discuss: • Stubborn pockets of fat I just can’t shift – too many areas to mention! • Cellulite on my outer thighs. • Uneven complexion on my face and some pigmentation. • A small tattoo (it was in vogue at the time!) Firstly, I was amazed to see the Clinic; you don’t appreciate that this kind of place exists in Stamford. Neeta listened as I went through my list and suggested a couple of scans. I got on to the Body Scanner – imagine standing on a round plate that spins you around slowly, (for about a minute) with 1200 pictures being taken – this then generated a computer
avatar of me in my full glory with full measurements, weight (fat and muscle) and other important things such as BMI and BMR. She then examined the different areas of my body, explaining that some of these bits were indeed fat and other areas were saggy skin, due to weight loss post-childbirth. Secondly, she did a full facial scan where this ‘whizzy’ machine created different lighting conditions and took several pictures of my face. Instantly she was able to show me on an iPad what was going on under the top layer – it is amazing what the naked eye just can’t see! We also did a patch test on the tattoo with the laser machine, with virtually no pain. There followed a comprehensive medical questionnaire to create a bespoke plan just for me. She was also very honest and there were some areas it was more about self-help. So my journey in a nutshell is as follows: • Some Fat Freezing on some stubborn pockets of fat that I just can’t shift. • A cellulite reduction programme on my thighs. • Some skin tightening and lifting.
• A SkinCeutical Gel Peel and then a Carbon Laser Facial. • Some laser hair removal – (not on the list, but I couldn’t resist it!) We worked out that we would be using about nine different technologies across four different machines, all from the top brands in the industry. In conclusion, I loved the fact that they have been established for several years and with several hundred clients and several thousand treatments under their belt they really know what will work and what won’t. The different machines and technologies made me feel I wasn’t just being sold what they had, as opposed to what was right for me. Definitely EXPERT in what they do. If you want to feel body-confident for a holiday or just generally, I would thoroughly recommend you pay them a visit. Review by Jean Black

Professional Ear Care and Safe Syringing by Jane Russell RGN BSc(Hons) INP
Y
our ears are just as important as your eyes and teeth. Whilst most people will visit an optician and a dentist at least once a year and sometimes more for a check-up, the ears tend to be neglected.
Good hearing and healthy ears play an important part in your quality of life. If you have ever experienced reduced, or even lost your hearing for a short period of time, then you’ll know just how frustrating and lonely it can be. For some people, this could make them feel very vulnerable, especially if they live alone. If you feel you have a problem with your ears, don’t just ignore it. There are many conditions that can affect your hearing, such as ear infections or ear wax build up. Some are very straightforward to fix and generally, as with so many other things in life, the sooner you have them checked, the sooner you can get back to normal. Ear wax is completely normal; it is produced by the ear to provide protection. Ears are actually self-cleaning and you should never attempt to remove the wax yourself. Although it can be tempting, using items such as cotton buds can actually push the wax further down the ear canal and end up totally blocking your ear. The cotton wool tip can even damage your ear canal..... as can matches, hair grips and twigs! To help reduce the chances of problems with your ears, you should always try and keep them dry and protected from water. Using an ear plug when you go swimming or even showering is advisable. Wet ears can cause eczema, dermatitis, runny ears and infections. You could use cotton wool as a plug BUT ONLY if you smear it with Vaseline to ensure you do not damage the ear canal with the fibres. If you have an ear problem, it is recommended that you see a trained, competent practitioner in ear care. They have specialist equipment that allows them to see into your ear canal with the correct lighting, and are able to provide the correct and safe treatment. For ear wax, ear syringing / irrigation, when performed by qualified practitioners, is safe and effective. Please do not try internet “do it yourself ear syringing kits”. Effective treatment does not necessarily mean expensive treatment. At the Wellhead Practice, Jane Russell offers patients an initial assessment for £10. Your ears will be examined, and you’ll be given recommendations, ranging from general advice to suggested treatment. Ear syringing starts at £35. Jane Russell RGN BSc(Hons) INP qualified as a nurse in 1992, completed her advanced diploma in ear care in 2001 and has

The Ranch, as it is known, has a two-storey children’s soft play area, arcade machines, two air hockey tables, two pool tables, a restaurant/takeaway and two full-size bowling lanes. The Ranch is the first site in the UK to have an interactive facility with the bowling - a fantastic mural runs alongside the bowling which alters the mood in the evening when the nights draw in. The new MUGA (multi-use games area), offers football, basketball and tennis and is already very popular with the children.

Health
Lakeside Healthcare at Bourne Hereward Practice
The Hereward Practice is pleased to announce that we have recruited a new GP who will join the practice in the week commencing September 2nd 2019. Dr Penny Miller is a very experienced GP who completed her training with us, back in 2001 and we will all benefit from having another GP on the team. We are taking this opportunity to STOP the Open Access Clinic at the end of August. Instead of Open Access, we will offer more routine appointments and more telephone consultations spread throughout the week for patients’ convenience. The Acute Illness Team will continue to run the same-day service each day for all acute medical problems. If you develop a minor condition such as urine infection, ear or chest infection, back pain, skin rash, gout, headaches, tonsillitis etc, please ring on 01778 393399 and ask to see or speak to a member of the Acute Illness Team for same-day advice and treatment.
Measles outbreaks continue to be reported across the country. It is a highly infectious disease with serious complications for children, the immunecompromised, and pregnant women. If you or your child have not received two doses of the MMR vaccine (at age 12 months and 3 years 4 months), please contact the surgery on 01778 393399 and we can check your records and, if necessary, make an appointment for the immunisation with a nurse. Smear Tests Save Lives! The NHS Cervical Screening Programme (NHSCSP) aims to reduce the incidence of cervical cancer through a national screening programme, and all eligible women aged between 25-65 years are invited to take part in the cervical cytology programme, every 3-5 years, depending on age. If you have received your invitation in the post, please make an appointment with one of our specially trained nurses to ensure you are screened. Smear tests can reduce your risk of developing cervical cancer.

Bourne Town Bowls Club – Membership Up and a HealthyLooking Future Bourne Town Bowls Club were blessed with a full day of sunshine on Sunday June 9th, when they staged their Open Day for sponsors and the community. Members turned out sporting their Club shirts, (see picture). Mayor of Bourne, Councillor Brenda Johnson and her Consort, together with the other sponsors formally presented the new sets of bowls and accessories to the Club. This now enables the Club to provide “taster sessions” for anyone in the Bourne community to have a try at bowling, without them needing to purchase expensive sets of bowls. Every Wednesday, starting at 6pm, and every Sunday, starting at 2pm, anyone can have three free taster sessions. This enables people of all abilities to enjoy a sport that offers EXERCISE, MENTAL STIMULATION, SOCIAL ACTIVITIES, DE-STRESS/RELEASE/ ESCAPE, FUN AND LAUGHTER and a SENSE OF ACHIEVEMENT. Anyone can join in and play, and enjoy the friendship of the Club members. Many people often say, “I have always fancied playing bowls but I have never got around to trying.” Through the generosity of sponsors such as the Town Council, The Len Pick Trust, Bourne United Charities, Bourne Lions, Bourne Round Table, Bourne Rotary, Bakkavor, Larkfleet, Nettl, Warners, and other companies who support the Club, anyone can visit the Club and enjoy bowling. Links to all of the sponsors can be seen on the Club website www.bournetownbowlsclub.co.uk. Waterside Garden Centre have provided a lovely
garden feature, with a bench for spectators to watch the bowling, which enhances the attractive setting of the bowling green and Club pavilions. The Club welcomes spectators and has a bar and refreshment facility, available when bowling activities are in play. The Club plays in the Peterborough, Stamford and Spalding leagues, and matches are played every day during the week. The Club has created a positive image as the new Club shirts, sponsored by Discovering Bourne and Georges, are admired by everyone. Club members enjoy social ‘rollups’ on Wednesdays and Saturdays, starting at 2pm, as well as a range of evening events at the Club, such as Quiz Nights, Bingo, Strawberry Teas, Hog Roast and the Club Dinner and Dance, which will be held on December 14th this year at the Bourne Corn Exchange. New plans are being submitted for planning to expand the facilities of the club house and to make them totally appropriate for disabled and wheelchair users. The Club are seeking sponsors to fund these plans which are due to be completed ready for the 2020 season, starting in April next year. It is an exciting time for the Club and its members, as the membership has now increased from forty to over eighty members, with new people joining “taster sessions” weekly. Once people try bowling, they inevitably want to continue, and experienced Club members are eager to help them. Information can be obtained at www. bournetownbowlsclub.co.uk or e-mail btbc2018@ gmail.com.

JC Couriers Supports Peterborough Racing Car Talent with Motorsport Partnership A Peterborough courier business is joining forces with a Castor-born racing driver in a bid to help him secure top spot in one of the most exciting club racing championships in UK motorsport. JC Couriers, specialist provider of same-day courier and specialist logistics services, will sponsor driver Ross Elliott and Avidity Motorsport, a Peterboroughbased team competing in The Radical SR1 Cup. The partnership will see the JC Couriers brand prominently represented on the race car, as well as team wear and support vehicles. Amanda Chappell, Managing Director of JC Couriers said, “At JC Couriers, we are committed to connecting people and businesses through our expert delivery services. We look forward to cheering on the Avidity Motorsport team who apply the same safety and performance standards on the track as our own reliable couriers.” The alliance coincides with the opening of JC Couriers’ new Bourne depot, a location that has an eighty-year connection with the motorsport industry, and was home to international racing driver and designer, Raymond Mays, who founded British Racing Motors (BRM). Twenty-five-year-old driver Ross, an ex-King’s School pupil who lives in Castor, learned his craft in karting from the age of eight, racing in two-stroke championships before moving into saloon cars in 2014. Ross made the move into a Radical SR1 part way through the 2018 season. A top-five finisher in his first outing proved the decision (to move from Tin-Top to Sportscars for 2019), was the right one. Ross said, “As the team behind the 2018 Radical SR1 Cup champion, Avidity Motorsport has proven that a small private team that’s determined and totally committed to winning can take on the big budget teams and beat them. I’m excited that JC Couriers has decided to support our racing efforts and I look forward to getting out on the track and delivering the very best results we can for them!” For further information, visit www.jccouriers.com and www.aviditymotorsport.co.uk. a u gus t 2 019

Your Finances
Free Financial Advice Anyone?
by Adrian Hallas DipPFS, Independent Financial Adviser
T
here seems to be a perception among the general public that financial advice is freely available. Let’s set the record straight – it’s not! Advice firms invest significant amounts training and keeping their advisers up-to-date, so why would they give away their services for free? Perhaps the confusion stems from the free government-funded services, such as PensionWise (www.pensionwise.gov.uk ) and the Money Advice Service (www.moneyadviceservice.org.uk ). These are great services, but their purpose is to inform the public of the options that are available to them. They are not permitted to give any advice as to the suitability of each option, as their staff are not qualified or authorised to do so. So, what about the adverts on the internet that offer a ‘Free Financial Review’? OK, so let’s break this down: When you fill out your details online, this turns into a lead which will be sold to an advice firm at a cost of somewhere between £50 and £130. The adviser will then have to arrange, plan and travel to the meeting using, on average, three hours of their time. After all that, they will need to produce a report with recommendations to improve your financial position.
So, what is it that motivates them to undertake all of that work at no charge to the client? Well, traditionally, advisers are trained in sales and already having incurred significant costs; be under no illusion, their aim in that first meeting is to generate new business. However, they must take account of the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) regulations that stipulate all advice must be in the best interest of the customer. So how can these seemingly conflicting objectives be reconciled? A good advice firm will carefully filter leads to ensure that advisers only allocate time to clients who will genuinely benefit from paying for financial advice. Technological developments can be helpful, such as an online ‘Fact Find’ that allows the adviser to assess a potential client’s financial position prior to arranging a meeting. So no, financial advice is not free, but before committing to that first meeting the adviser should be reasonably confident that paying for advice will be in the best interest of the client. Of course, the client is under no obligation to accept the proposal, but hey, you can take a horse to water …
Always in your best interest Independent Financial Advice, that puts your best interest at the forefront of every recommendation.

Hay Hampers Joins ‘Too Good To Go’ to Reduce Food Waste Bourne-based gift hamper company, Hay Hampers Ltd, has joined international food waste app. ‘Too Good To Go’, the platform which aims to reduce food waste worldwide by connecting businesses with surplus food that is still perfectly edible to customers who pre-order and collect it. Gabriele Da Re, Managing Director at Hay Hampers, comments: “At Hay Hampers we are passionate about sourcing the perfect product but also ensuring none of it is wasted. If everyone in the hospitality and food service industry puts as much passion into reducing waste as they do into creating delicious food, it would make a massive difference”. Britain currently wastes 10.2 million tonnes of food every year – with 1.8 million tonnes coming from food
manufacture, one million tonnes from the hospitality sector, 260,000 tonnes from the retail and the rest from regular households, according to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. Launched in June 2016, ‘Too Good To Go’ is now available in over one hundred towns and cities across the UK. Working with everyone from independent retailers to contract caterers, supermarkets and hotels, ‘Too Good To Go’ offers what are called ‘Magic Bags’, i.e. all the delicious, perfectly edible food that stores and restaurants have to throw out at the end of the day. The ‘Magic Bag’ format means that businesses don’t have to itemise what food they’re selling or putting to waste – it really is a case of selling whatever is left over. Bourne Arts & Community Trust - WAKE HOUSE Wake House is a thriving community hub in Bourne, housing over seventy community groups and businesses. However, as many people will know, the Grade II - listed building which dates from the 1800s is in urgent need of restoration to secure its future. Wake House was the birthplace of Charles Fredrick Worth who became one of Europe’s most celebrated fashion designers in the late 1800s. Worth designed gowns and costumes for the royalty and nobility of Europe and beyond, establishing the first “Fashion House” and is known as the “Father of Haute Couture”. Work to complete essential structural repairs began in early July, which has been funded by the Trust and supported by a £4,000 Heritage Alive! Grant from InvestSK. The Trustees and staff would like to thank everyone who has supported us and helped us get this far; however, these repairs are just the first step in our campaign, and we still have a long way to go to save Wake House. It is estimated that, to fully restore the building and protect this valuable community asset, it will cost approximately £300,000. It is hoped that, seeing this work having begun, it will re-invigorate and galvanise the community to rally in support for Wake House. Bourne Arts and 30

Community Trust is operating a Gift Aid Scheme for donations towards the cost of future work, and Trustees are keen to talk to groups, employers and organisations in and around Bourne who would like to support our campaign. Wake House has many attractive rooms for hire now; it will continue to provide facilities to the community during the repair work, which is estimated to take twelve weeks and cause only minimal disruption for users. Rooms are available to hire for permanent letting or hourly, for meetings, clubs and groups. Anyone interested in using our rooms should call in or contact Wake House on 01778 393517 or e-mail at wakehouse@talktalk.net. More information about the Heritage Alive! The BRITISH PROPERTY AWARDS are one of the most inclusive estate agency awards providers as they do not charge to enter. This has enabled their award to be structured in a manner that ensures maximum participation, on average judging over 90% of agents that meet their minimum criteria on a local level. The team personally mystery shops every estate agent against a set of 25 criteria to obtain a balanced overview of their customer service levels. The judging criteria are both comprehensive and detailed exploring different mediums, scenarios and time periods to ensure that agents have been rigorously and fairly judged. Robert McLean from The British Property Awards said, “Our awards have been specifically designed to be attainable to all agents, removing common barriers to entry, such as cost, to ensure that we have the most inclusive awards. Our awards have also been designed to remove any opportunity for bias or manipulation. If an agent has been attributed with one of our awards, it is simply down to the fantastic customer service levels that they have demonstrated across a prolonged period of time. Winning agents should be proud that their customer service levels provide a benchmark for their local, regional and national competition.

We are all getting older which of course is better than the alternative! Even today, many people do not make wills which leaves them at the mercy of the Law of Intestacy. So if we want to be sure to leave our estate to our chosen family or friends we should always make a will. Keeping a will updated as well is advised because otherwise we may not be using all reliefs and allowances that are available. Seeing a solicitor ensures that the correct clauses are utilised and costs are kept down. The legal profession is regulated and insured. Another issue arising is that of mobility or capacity. We can protect ourselves by making a Lasting Power of Attorney, either just for Finance and Property or also for Health and Welfare. We must always consider carefully who we should appoint as Attorney because we are entrusting the persons concerned with power to spend our money or sell
our home. We might also be giving them power to make “life and death” decisions for us. Trust is absolutely vital. If we need someone to assist us, but have not created a Power Of Attorney, our loved ones would have to apply to be appointed a Deputy (receiver). The good side of this is that The Court of Protection will check the annual accounts filed. The bad side is that
the forms are more difficult to complete and the fees are worse. Where a loved one has died, the government intend to raise probate fees in the near future, so anyone who is dealing with an estate should ensure that they are progressing their case. The advice of a solicitor can protect and guide clients in such cases.

Consumer Advice from Safe Local Trades and Services Summer’s here, and whatever the weather, we Brits just love our barbecues! A great excuse for a spot of alfresco dining with family and friends, the popular social gathering offers the chance for the guys to show off their grill skills, the ladies to rustle up a tasty summer punch and the kids to have endless fun. If this sounds like your ideal barbecue (and what’s not to love?) then don’t allow anything to spoil it. The sad fact is that barbecues are involved in many hundreds of accidents that occur in the garden each year. The last time that figures were collected, through the Home and Leisure Accident Surveillance System (HASS/ LASS) in 2002, an estimated 1,800 people visited A&E in the UK having had an accident involving a barbecue. The most common types of barbecue-related accidents, as shown by the HASS/LASS figures, were: • Burn/scald/other injury related to fire or flame – 800 • Cut/tear by sharp edges - 200 The vast majority of barbecue accidents (1,400) happened in a home setting. Some of the accidents lead to very serious burns, usually as a result of using an accelerant such as petrol to light the fuel. However, planning ahead and following some simple safety tips will ensure your barbecue is fun-filled and not a flaming failure. • Keep your barbecues away from flammable garden furniture such as wooden or plastic chairs. • Move your barbecue away from sheds, fences, overhanging branches and foliage, and never light it in an enclosed space. • Never leave a barbecue unattended. • Never let children too close to the barbecue. • Use only recognised firelighters or starter fuels on charcoal barbecues. • If you’re a gas barbecue user, ensure the tap is off before changing the cylinder. • When choosing a barbecue, stability is essential - ensure the one you choose is strong and sturdy. • Check your barbecue is in good condition (particularly if you have not used it for some time) and look for loose or damaged parts that may need adjustment or repair. To protect you, your family and your home, it is advisable to have working fire alarms in your property and to generally be fire-safety savvy. And it’s not just barbecues that can cause an outdoor hazard: • Ensure all lanterns and candles with a naked flame are fully extinguished when you leave the garden. • Never leave children unattended in, or near, inflatable pools or similar if they contain water. The same applies to garden ponds. Take care also when visiting other people’s gardens - children can drown in less than 3cm of water! • Clear away unused garden hoses and tools – which can be easily tripped over. • And finally, protect and secure your home and garden by securely locking back gates, sheds, garages and windows on balmy evenings. The Potting Shed August is the month when you “reap what you have sown!” What could be more rewarding than to eat a meal where the fresh produce is the result of your hard work?Make sure that you harvest crops such as courgettes, runner and French beans regularly before they grow too large and stringy – the more you pick the more you get! Trips to the allotment or vegetable plot will be more about watering and harvesting than planting but there are still one or two crops that you can sow: mainly lettuces and salad leaves, spring onions, radishes, Japanese onion seeds (in situ), and a last batch of carrots and turnips. As you harvest your crops and create some space, you can transplant winter and spring cauliflowers, sprouting broccoli and kale, and sow a few more seeds for spring cabbage. Keep them well-watered, and planting them through weed suppressant material should help keep the moisture in and the soil warmer. Also keeping the weeds at bay is important (which in the drier months –if we get any – should be less prolific); a regular hoeing should be sufficient. To retain precious moisture, it can help to add mulch around your crops to prevent excess evaporation in drier weather, preferably immediately after it has rained. Other jobs for this month include: • Prune gooseberry and currant bushes. • Strawberry runners that have been potted can be transplanted into a sunny, fertile spot.
• Cut to the ground all raspberry canes that have borne fruit this year, and tie in the new green canes that will produce next year’s fruit. • Continue pinching out tomatoes and don’t forget to provide support for the plants as they become more heavily laden - also for cucumbers, peppers and even fruit trees. • Keep earthing up potatoes to prevent the tubers being exposed and also brassicas to support unsteady stems. • Dig over any spaces that have been left from harvesting crops, where you could grow green manure such as clover or vetch, which will provide nitrogen for the soil, or alfalfa, cress or mustard which will help break up the soil. • Pinch out the tops of climbing beans when they reach the top of the canes as this will encourage growth lower down, and harvest regularly before they become tough and stringy: you can let some grow on to produce bean seeds for next year. • Outdoor tomatoes should have their growth stopped by the middle of the month – nip out the leading growing shoot just above the highest truss. • Be on the lookout for potato blight, especially if the weather is damp and humid; cut off the stems at ground level as soon as you see the tell-tale brown fungal patches. This prevents the blight reaching the tubers. Enjoy the fruits of your labour!

Company Directors: Your Pension Needs You! - by Matthew Biggs - Liberty Partnership Ltd
Have you noticed that your Corporation Tax bill keeps getting bigger? But have you ever thought about how a pension can help? If we’re being honest, I’d guess probably not. But there are many ways in which your business could benefit from getting the most out of your pension. We see a lot of clients in the office who are either self-employed or directors of their limited company, towards the end of the Tax Year (though they should probably come and see us much sooner than the end of the Tax Year!) This is often because they are keen to utilise their allowances when it comes to pensions contributions, but why? Well, to start with, a well-timed personal pension contribution can help limit the amount of Income Tax you could be liable to – and the same can be said about Corporation Tax if you were to

make an employer contribution through your company. How can a pension contribution help you pay less Corporation Tax I hear you ask? Well, an employer pension contribution into a workplace pension is treated as an ‘allowable business expense’ and can therefore be taken from any pre-tax profits your company may have. Sounds good, doesn’t it? Of course, there are limitations to this, but one thing is for sure, something as innocent as a pension contribution could benefit your business in ways you’d never have thought. If you would like to find out more about how your pension can help your business, please call our office on 01778 342291 to arrange a FREE initial consultation with one of our friendly and experienced Financial Planners.

V & G Caravans The One Stop Caravan Shop!
In this month’s issue, we meet Vince Gale, (44), owner of V & G Caravans. Based in the heart of the Cambridgeshire fens at Benwick Road, Whittlesey, his company specialises in all types of caravan and motorhome repairs and servicing. Vince and close friend, George, started V & G Caravans in February 1991 after the caravan company they worked for went into liquidation. They thought that something had to come out of the ashes, so they took on the existing insurance work and completed all outstanding commitments. Since then, they have gone from strength to strength, and have built up a glowing reputation on the camping and caravanning circuit, for their excellent customer service and astounding product knowledge. Caravan owners from across the UK have visited V & G
Caravans over the years, sometimes with clients visiting from as far away as Cornwall.

Discovering . . . the Abbey House
Rex Needle
O
ne of the most important properties in Bourne in past times was the Abbey House, described as “a fine mansion” when it was built in the mid-18th century, but comparatively little has been known about it. It stood immediately next to the Abbey Church on the spot now occupied by the vicarage lawn and was such a grand residence that it was known to everyone as Bourne Abbey, perhaps because it was built on the site of the old monastic buildings of mediaeval times. The name can be found in some old documents and has led to a mistaken belief that it referred to the church itself but was in fact a private residence. The house was built in 1764 by George Pochin, Lord of the Manor of Bourne Abbots, who lived there in some style and when he died in 1798, members of his family remained in residence until 1823 when the property was leased to various tenants. In February 1835, it was advertised to let “on very advantageous terms” and the description gives us a glimpse of a property of some distinction and tells us about the lifestyle of the gentry in the early 19th century. “This capital mansion house”, said the notice, “contains coach houses, stables, granaries, dovecote

and other numerous and convenient offices, also the extensive gardens, spacious lawns with other grassland, contiguous to the mansion, the whole containing about twenty acres of very rich land. The Abbey, which is partially furnished, comprises dining, drawing and breakfast rooms, 19 bed-chambers and attics, a spacious kitchen possessing every requisite for culinary purposes, housekeeper’s room, servants’ hall, brewhouse and every other suitable appendage.” The house continued in useful occupation with various tenants until 1848 when it was acquired by the church as a new vicarage for the then incumbent, the Rev Joseph Dodsworth, and he remained there until he died in May 1877 after serving the parish as curate and vicar for more than half a century. Soon after his death, the church decided that the vicar needed a more modern home and that the old property should provide some of the materials for its construction and so it was dismantled stone by stone. The new building eventually opened in 1879 and continued in use until the present vicarage was built in 1986 when it was sold and converted for use as the Cedars retirement and rest home. Figures quoted are for a range of configurations and are subject to change due to ongoing approvals/changes. Please consult your retailer for further information.
