Introduction

Welcome to Your September Issue. Summer is still hanging around, but only just, and I hope your break has proved refreshing and energising. September signals the return to school for many and the shortening of days for all. Blackberries and sloes are ripening and some shops are already stocking their “must-haves” for Christmas, over three months away! For us mums (and dads) with our teenagers now having received their GCSE and A-Level results, we can step back and see just what fantastic human beings they actually are, as they move on to the next stage of their lives. They have done their very best, taken the advice offered by their teachers and us, formulated future plans, and are developing into responsible adults. Phew!

Claire x

As the fabulous summer of 2019 draws towards a close, we’re already looking forward to the months to come. Sports fans will have just enough time to recover from the Ashes before the Rugby World Cup kicks off in Japan on September 20th, (England’s first game is on the 22nd.) By then, Peterborough United will have (hopefully!) overcome their excessive generosity in gifting goals to their opponents, and wonderful memories of Bourne’s first Cicle Festival will remain vivid for us all. It is really encouraging to see something like this Festival staged on our doorstep in the hope that it could become established in years to come, and our thanks go to everyone involved. Similarly, our best wishes and thanks to everyone behind the “Love Bourne – Shop Local” initiative about to be rolled out in our town. This month always provides us with a rash of one-liners from the Edinburgh Fringe, so I’ll leave you with: A cowboy asked me if I could help him round up 18 cows. I said, ‘Yes, of course, that’s 20 cows’, (Jake Lambert). I got asked the other day if I liked the music of Ariana Grande, which surprised me as I thought that was a type of coffee, (Joey Page). Enjoy the read!

“It Takes Two” - How Renu Can Help You! by Claire Saunders, Renu - Health, Beauty & Fitness

W

e know the saying that goes, “Less is more”, but let’s be honest. Sometimes, two is just plain better than one. When it comes to working out, having a friend along for the ride can be beneficial. You can get a serious workout without being serious – it’s okay to have fun. In fact, the more fun your workouts are, the more you’re going to look forward to, and be committed to them over the longterm. There’s absolutely no doubt that the right friend to exercise with can make your workouts more fun. Being able to laugh, encourage and motivate will make them much more enjoyable. Here are some of the benefits of working out with a friend: Fewer skipped workouts Scheduling a gym session with a friend helps hold you accountable for getting your workout in. Meeting

someone to exercise with not only motivates you to show up, but to work hard as well. Push yourself further Exercising with another person pushes you to do your workout and do it to the best of your ability. A bit of friendly banter and encouragement can mean you get a little bit more out of your exercise session.

distracted. Having someone to chat with lets you focus on something other than just your workout, making the time go by faster.

Try new exercises Going to the gym with a friend is the perfect time to try out new exercises or classes. When trying something new, your friend will provide a confidence boost and keep your workouts interesting. At Renu, you can try up to nineteen classes a week, as part of your membership.

Recover together Socialising can often be a reason you may get out of your exercise routine. A friend who’s worked up a sweat with you is likely to want to join you for a healthy post-exercise meal or snack, so you get the best of both worlds!

Time Flies “Time flies when you’re having fun!”… or at least when you are

Sepsis

Valuable Advice from The Galletly Practice Sepsis is a life-threatening reaction which occurs when the body’s response to an infection injures its own tissues and organs. It can lead to shock, organ failure and even death, if it is not recognised and treated promptly. Our patients have asked for more advice on sepsis and we would like to recognise World Sepsis Day on Friday September 13th. Worldwide, 30 million people develop sepsis per year; it is a global health crisis and awareness and prevention can save lives. In the UK, sepsis takes the lives of five people every hour. A quarter of sepsis survivors are left with permanent problems. Sepsis is life-threatening and can be hard to spot. If you think you or someone you look after has symptoms of sepsis, call 999 or go to A&E. Trust your instincts. Symptoms of sepsis vary and can be subtle. Advice from the NHS: Call 999 or go to A&E if a baby or young child has any of these symptoms:

• Difficulty breathing (you may notice grunting noises or their stomach sucking under their ribcage), breathlessness or breathing very fast. • A weak, high-pitched cry that’s not like their normal cry. • Not responding like they normally do, or not interested in feeding or normal activities. • Being sleepier than normal or difficult to wake. Call 999 or go to A&E if an adult or older child has any of these symptoms of sepsis: • Acting confused, slurred speech or not making sense. • Blue, pale or blotchy skin, lips or tongue. • A rash that does not fade when you roll a glass over it. • Difficulty breathing, breathlessness or breathing very fast.

• Blue, pale or blotchy skin, lips or tongue.

Spotting sepsis can be very hard because some symptoms are vague and can mimic other conditions. We suggest you call 111 or your GP for advice if you:

• A rash that does not fade when you roll a glass over it.

• Feel very unwell or like there’s something seriously wrong.

• Have not had a pee all day (or in the last twelve hours for babies and young children). • Keep vomiting and cannot keep food or milk (for babies and young children) down. • Have redness, swelling or pain around a cut or wound. • Have a very high or low temperature, feel hot or cold to the touch or are shivering. Our advice is to call if you are not sure, as it is best to check. 111 will tell you what to do, arrange for you to speak to a doctor or nurse, or send an ambulance for you. Please share this information with friends, neighbours, family or those in vulnerable groups, Sepsis is treatable but must be caught early; the more we discuss it the better we can be at recognition.

Sacro-iliac Joint problems

by Philip Hakim, Registered Osteopath, Owner of the Wellhead Practice

F

ound at the lower end of the spine, the Sacroiliac joints (SIJ) connect the sacrum (a triangular shaped bone at the base of the spine) to each of the larger outer pelvic bones (ilia) to make the pelvis complete. They act as shock absorbers allowing movement and body weight to be transferred in a smooth and controlled manner from the upper body through to the legs and vice versa.

Possible causes of injury: SIJ injuries are not unusual. The more traumatic causes can include a fall onto your side such as a miss-timed sliding tackle, or slipping and landing onto your bottom. Less dramatic reasons include repetitive weight bearing activities such as running, jumping, dancing or gymnastics for example. In practice, a common cause is a sudden jolt to the pelvis such as missing a step or dropping into an unseen hole in the ground whilst walking the dog. A rounded or slouching posture can also be a triggering factor. Symptoms: Pain is usually felt on one side of the lower back often localised to the dimpled area just below your waistband. You may feel discomfort in the buttock, lower abdomen or groin regions too. Some patients report a sense that the affected leg feels a slightly different length or that

it even drags or doesn’t swing properly when they walk. Occasionally the front of the thigh feels achy or appears to burn if they have been on their feet too long. Rest can be a relief although you can end up feeling slightly stiff afterwards and turning over in bed can be painful too. Treatment options: In my experience, most SI problems respond really well to manual treatment. Using techniques to decompress or re-align the joints and straighten the pelvis can work really well to restore normal joint movement. Soft tissue massage and stretching can then reduce the localised muscle spasm and encourage a healthier blood flow to the tissues. This helps to drain away any inflammation built up and speed up the recovery. Muscle re-education can then strengthen the surrounding areas or correct any postural imbalances that may be contributing and reduce the likelihood of a reoccurrence. Sometimes a special pelvic belt or sports taping is useful to stabilise the joint for a while.

Hypnotherapy Helps

Trauma and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Trauma and PTSD Trauma is experienced by many people in their lives, for many different reasons. Trauma and PTSD can cause strong reactions by people witnessing atrocities such as in war, but also to those exposed to sexual abuse, brutality, or physical or emotional abuse in relationships.

or fight against these feelings. Yet it is the avoidance of these symptoms and memories that sneak into daily activities, behaviour, daydreams, thoughts, flash backs and nightmares. So the longer traumatic events are ignored the longer the traumatic memories will control us affecting our lives in negative ways.

When such things happen to us in our lives it’s difficult to make sense of what happened to us and negative emotions are the consequence. Affecting our lives in different ways such as withdrawing from or not engaging in relationships or society, difficult for others to be around us, causing stress in others, eating in ways that are harmful to us, struggling with addictions, and suffering from depression, fears, anger, insomnia, anxiety, irritability, and low self-worth.

Hypnotherapy for Trauma and Post traumatic Stress I use a combination of hypnosis, neuro-linguistic programming, mindfulness and cognitive behavioural therapy techniques, helping you to reduce the impact and the symptoms associated with trauma. By using the calming properties of hypnosis it helps to diminish the anxiety associated with the trauma and improving sleep patterns helps you to move forward with your life, while also learning to live more fully in the present moment in order to regain control over your life.

Why Traumatic Events Leave a Lasting Impact Trauma can affect a person’s life months and years after the event occurred and the difficulties that can arise interfere with everyday life. People don’t always realize how negative emotions, problems in relationships, and low self-esteem are directly related to past traumatic experiences. Negative emotions can make a person push away the memories

Legal Corner

Legal Services in the Modern Age by Richard Wood

It will shortly be twenty years since the turn of the century. Double and Megson, having formed in 1978, have seen many changes in the last forty-one years. What is still true is that all of us need legal services and will probably always need them, (even if a robot tries to play the role!) It was once famously asked, “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” Whether a “bot” could consider the issues in a legal case is a moot point. It is the communication and sensitivity that makes the difference to a client. The eye contact and reassurance counts in any professional context, be it with a lawyer, doctor, dentist or an independent financial adviser. Double and Megson believe that the provision of local legal services is best for the client. Our fee earners offer rounded legal advice, sometimes crossing different legal subjects on an integrated basis. The firm has acted over many years for local businesses and families, (sometimes three generations of one family). So, knowing the solicitor is as important as knowing

the client, the other way round. It is worrying that there have recently been unknown persons walking the streets locally, purporting to offer advice to unsuspecting parties. If any of us need advice, we should seek out those who are both regulated and insured. Our firm believes in finding out what is at the heart of a client’s instructions and

acting efficiently to find a client-focused outcome. We will always offer a downto-earth, friendly approach to put clients at their ease. Great care and caution is required when considering what is said on the internet. Certainly some benefit can be obtained from government websites but otherwise there can be significant risk.

Cyclists Rally Round Sue Ryder Finding out that you have an incurable condition is devastating news. Many people have no choice about how and where they spend their final days, but, here in Bourne, people have that choice. Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice, based in Peterborough, offers expert palliative care to adults with life-limiting conditions like cancer, heart failure and lung disease. Rachel Hancock, community fundraiser trainee, explains: “At Sue Ryder, we strongly believe that everyone has the right to die as they wish. We do everything we can to take the fear out of dying. Our care is offered free of charge but costs us £9000 a day. To raise the shortfall, we must rely on the support and generosity of the local community.” Three men who have given their support are Andy McManus, pastor at Morton Baptist Church, gym owner Harvey Taylor and Tomasz Guina, who cycled from Brighton to Bourne raising more than £3000 for the hospice. They took on the challenge in memory of church parishioner and friend, Niall Quinlan. Andy said: “Niall was treated so well by the Thorpe Hall team. The care was first class and I was struck by the friendliness and professionalism of the staff. I am privileged to give a little something back. Niall is looking down and giving us the thumbs up!” In England, every four and a half minutes, someone dies without the end of life care they need. Green Burial Site Set in Beautiful South Lincolnshire Countryside

T

emple Wood Natural Burial Ground was the idea of Clare Atkinson, who farms with her husband George and family near the village of Aslackby, which is located between Bourne and Sleaford on the A15. The field is a five-acre grass meadow which is next to Temple Wood. The initial research showed that green burials are getting more popular, not only because of churchyards becoming overcrowded but because people are wanting to be returned to nature. It was also concluded that there are no other burial grounds close by; in fact this is the first one in South Kesteven. The site is set in stunning, undulating countryside, making it a peaceful and serene place for family to visit and recall loving memories. Temple Wood Natural Burial Ground work closely alongside funeral directors who make all the usual arrangements. There is the

option to have a natural burial or scattering/interment of ashes. There is also the option to remember your loved one by planting a tree and having a remembrance plaque. Advance bookings are available and especially recommended for family plots. The whole ethos of the natural burial site is in its name, “natural”. Therefore its aim is to be as environmentally-friendly as possible, using coffins made from willow, wicker, cardboard or chipboard, and urns to be made from sand/salt or papier-mache, all of which will biodegrade back into the soil. A recommended florist can also provide bio-degradable packaging and containers for flowers. For any further information, please visit www.templewoodburials.com or email: info@templewoodburials.com or contact your funeral director.

Riverside Bourne Industrial Units Get Green Light A new industrial development at The Slipe, off Cherry Holt Road in Bourne has been given the go-ahead from South Kesteven District Council’s Planning Committee. The development – ‘Riverside Business Park’ - offers a range of premises for start-up businesses and more established companies, with a mix of smaller units available for let, and larger serviced plots offered for sale. SKDC’s Planning Committee agreed the scheme which is likely to break ground in 2020. The site, located adjacent to Bourne’s existing industrial area, is being developed by Workplace Property Ltd - the company behind the successful King Street Industrial Estate in Langtoft - with the scheme designed by local architects’ practice, Harris McCormack. Director, Dan Hiblin, said, “We are delighted to have achieved outline consent from the committee today. There is high demand in Bourne for industrial space generally, and for grow-on plots specifically. Our development has been designed to support this growth and encourage the expansion of local businesses. It has been very satisfying to witness the success of our tenants at King Street, but frustrating to see them sometimes leave the district for lack of larger premises. Riverside Business Park will address this need, help keep Bourne businesses in Bourne and support a vibrant community in which more residents can live and work.” Jon Hinde, Head of Economy and Skills at InvestSK, South Kesteven’s economic growth and regeneration company, said, “Over the next twenty years, South Kesteven aims to grow its local economy by an additional £1.2 billion, build 14,000 new homes and create 10,000 more jobs. Today’s decision is an important milestone in bringing forward much-needed employment land to enable local companies to expand in the district and contribute to our ambitious plans for economic growth. This new development in Bourne will help to serve the increasing need for grow-on space (between 5,000 and 15,000 sq. ft.) to allow our growing businesses to expand beyond small starter 24

units and stay in South Kesteven.” King Street Industrial Estate in Langtoft has enjoyed 100% occupancy levels over the last five years, and 95% over the last ten years. At any one time, InvestSK is aware of a dozen businesses struggling to find suitable grow-on space within a ten-mile radius of Bourne, with many businesses expressing an interest in the site. If you are a business interested in either the leasehold units or freehold plots at Riverside, you can get in touch direct with Dan Hiblin at Workplace Property Ltd by e-mailing enquiries@ workplaceproperty.com . More details of the site will be launched over the next month on the company’s website: www.industrial-space-to-let. co.uk . s e p t e m be r 2 0 1 9

“Make More Friends and Meet More Often”, say The Nene and Welland Oddfellows Friendly Society As part of one of the oldest friendship societies in the country, established in 1810 with over 314,000 members nationwide, this local branch of Oddfellows is hosting a special get-together to encourage people to make new friends as part of the society’s annual national ‘Friendship Month’ event. Friendship is a hugely important factor for both health and happiness, as we all grow older and our lives change in so many ways over the years. The Nene and Welland Oddfellows, based in Market Deeping, is inviting anyone, any age, to join them for a special Afternoon Tea event on Sunday September 1st , at 2pm at Oddfellows Hall, 57 Church Street, Market Deeping, to start the national ‘Friendship Month’, which runs for the whole of September. This September marks the anniversary of ‘Friendship Month’, the annual awareness campaign run by the Oddfellows to celebrate the power of friendship, to highlight the need to keep social as we age, and to signpost people to ways they can stay connected to their communities. Andrew Spencer, Social and Development Officer for the Nene and Welland Oddfellows, said, “Many

studies have proved how regular company is essential to having a happier life. In fact, some would say that spending time with friends is as important as eating healthily or exercising. Friends aren’t just there to socialise with; they provide support and comfort in times of need. The Oddfellows are here to offer friendship and support all year round, but every September, as part of ‘Friendship Month’, we put on lots of exciting events which are perfect for first introductions. If someone is unsure about what to expect, please contact us so we can put you at ease. If we know someone is coming on their own, we’ll always ensure there’s someone there to welcome and support them until they find their feet. We’ve over two centuries of experience in offering friendship and support to our local members, so we’re no stranger to helping people discover new friendships.” To speak with someone, ahead of trying out an event, or to receive Nene and Welland Oddfellows’ latest events diary, contact Andrew on andrew. spencer@Oddfellows.co.uk or call 07729519122 between 9am and 5pm. Bourne Parish Neighbourhood Plan ‌Update In late 2017 South Kesteven District Council issued a draft of its Local Plan (a thirty-year plan, updated every five years), showing proposed sites for future housing development in the district. Such was the reaction in Bourne (400+ people objected to their choice of sites, more than in the rest of the district) that they handed the responsibility of choosing appropriate sites to The Bourne Parish Neighbourhood Plan (BPNP) team and Bourne Town Council (BTC). A joint working party from BPNP and BTC has already reviewed some sites but we would now like to know if there are any other sites that could be added to the original list, which was issued by SKDC in 2015.As part of the process, we need to find out what land within the parish of Bourne is available for development, or is likely to become available during the period to 2036, to facilitate growth in the local economy. While we are primarily looking for housing sites, with an area of at least 0.25 hectares, we would also like to hear from anyone who has an interest in sites or areas of land that they wish to see allocated in the Bourne Neighbourhood Plan for other uses, such as to improve the vitality and viability of the town centre. All proposals will be given due consideration; an allocation in the Neighbourhood Plan will establish the principle of development of the land in question. The information provided will help the team to assess the merits of each site and will inform further

consultation that we propose to undertake, prior to determining the most appropriate sites to include in the Neighbourhood Plan. Once potential sites have been identified and assessed, draft findings will be produced for comment by applicants, and by the local community through public consultation. After the consultation process has been concluded, details of the sites chosen will be passed to South Kesteven District Council Site information must be received by Bourne Parish Neighbourhood Plan by Friday September 27th, 2019. A Submission Form can be obtained from Bourne Town Council, based at the Corn Exchange, by e-mail (clerk.bournetc@btconnect. com) or by download from the Town Council web site (http://bournetowncouncil.org.uk).

Ivy’s “Care Home Family” Pay Their Respects A memorial service has been held at The Willows Care Home in Rippingale recently to pay tribute to Ivy Southern, an 88 year-old resident of The Willows who had died on June 29th. In the five years that Ivy had lived there, she had never been visited by family or friends, and the only four attendees at her funeral had been members of staff from The Willows who had been her carers. s e ptem b er 2019

After experiencing this loss, it was decided by The Willows to set up a memorial in which a bench and some plants were to be installed in memory of Ivy, along with other residents who they have recently lost in a short space of time. The Willows Care Home has been caring for older people for over twenty-five years and has established an enviable reputation for excellent care. This has been achieved with its devoted manager and loyal dedicated staff, who truly believe that blood does not make you family, love does.

Wines: A Good Choice – Sparkling

S

parkling wines are a very popular choice for many people and can make a dining event into a special occasion, plus a celebration into a great experience. Numerous countries, globally, produce sparkling wines and the popularity of ‘sparklers’ increases every year. Sparkling wines can be enjoyed on their own, too. They offer excellent value, whilst continually impressing, with their wonderful perlages adding style. Balfour 1503 Foxwood Cuvee NV (Grapes: Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Meunier) is by producer Hush Heath, Kent, England. 1503 is the foundation year for Hush Heath Manor. Extra dry, refreshing and crisp. A favourite for many. Corte Molino Prosecco DOC NV (Grapes: Glera, Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay) is from producer Borgo Molino Vigne et Vini. Prosecco is hugely popular and a regular choice for lovers of sparkling wines. This DOC, extra dry, Italian sparkler is fantastic for pre dining drinks, as well as being a fabulous accompaniment to seafood, fish and white meats. Most Wanted Pinot Grigio Sparkling NV from Italy (Grapes: Pinot Grigio), by producer Cuvage SRL, has freshness and lightness complementing the citrus and other fruit flavours, perfectly. A great partnership with seafood dishes, particularly. Les Pionniers Champagne NV (Grapes: Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Meunier), by producer Piper

Bourne

Heidsieck, is a regular selection for numerous occasions. This aged production pleases the nasal senses with berry fruits, enticing the mouthfeel to its freshness, ready for the palate sensation, which follows superbly. Les Pionniers Vintage Champagne (Grapes: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir), by producer Piper Heidsieck, is a production often found on the ‘top table’. Again, this aged wine is fresh and possesses a well-balanced experience throughout, from the fruity bouquet to the last drop. These wines are a selection I have sourced from Co-op stores, which are available and open to everyone. Excellent quality beverages, including wines, spirits and beers, can be found at Co-op stores. The Co-op is committed to providing customers with great products, at very competitive prices, including own label, exclusives and well-established brands – from daily needs to special treats. Your Finances

“Active versus Passive: It’s not a war, it’s more important than that!” by Adrian Hallas DipPFS, Independent Financial Adviser

A

sk one adviser the type of funds you should invest in and they will say active. Ask another and they will say passive. Both advisers will defend their positions to the death so, as a client how do you make the choice? Well, a little knowledge is always helpful, so here goes. A passive fund manager aims to closely replicate the performance of an index. For instance, if the fund were based on the FTSE 100, a passive manager would purchase shares in the companies that make up the FTSE 100.

£134,686, whereas a passive fund with a 0.5% charge would return £163,862. That’s a difference of over £29k, so you’ve got to be reasonably confident that an active manager is going to recoup this deficit and make additional gains. Unfortunately, a study of the S&P500 showed that, over the long-term, over 80% of active managers across all categories under-performed their respective benchmarks! Active funds are more suited to adventurous investors, because higher risk funds have greater potential to overcome the cost of active management. This doesn’t mean that active funds are more risky than passive funds, as the risk rating of a fund is defined by its asset allocation, (I will cover risk rating and asset allocation in the next article).

An active fund manager aims to outperform the chosen index. Again, using the FTSE 100, an active fund manager would look for companies, similar to those in the index, that they believe are undervalued and have the potential for greater gains. Active management sounds great, so what’s the catch? Cost! In-depth research is required to identify companies with the potential for out-performance. An active fund manager could charge up to 1% per year more than a passive manager. That might not sound much, but if you invest £100k today and get a real return of 3%, in 20 years an active fund with a 1.5% charge would return

We have only touched on the subject here, but a good adviser will ensure you understand the different investment approaches, and assist you in making an informed choice. They will then select funds whose managers have shown strong and consistent historic performance. Of course, like anyone else, fund managers can change jobs, or lose their edge (see Neil Woodford), so it is essential to review the fund selection on an ongoing basis.

Always in your best interest Independent Financial Advice, that puts your best interest at the forefront of every recommendation.

D.I.Y. Divorce and the Pitfalls Separated spouses are increasingly taking advantage of the on-line service provided by the Family Courts, which is not yet available nationwide, but will soon be coming to your area. For a number of years, spouses have also been able to download the forms for a D.I.Y. divorce and when the circumstances are straightforward, this can work successfully. It is always desirable to save on legal costs where possible, and handling your own divorce proceedings can be a sensible way to achieve this. But if there is any legal complexity that you are unsure about, don’t plough on regardless and see if you can get it past the Family Court. It could end up with you having to pay extra court fees and taking twice as long if there is a technical hitch, and paying for some legal advice in the early stages would have been worth it. It is also very important to understand the significance of applying for financial remedy provisions in the petition. This does not mean you will be starting court proceedings for finances, but it could be vital for the future if such a step becomes unavoidable, that you have put down your marker at the early stages in your divorce petition. Divorce is hopefully a one-off experience for most people – make sure you get it right and invest in a Family Law specialist. s e ptem b er 2019

It seems that not a week goes by lately without warning of a new scam – with cyber criminals becoming more and more sophisticated. An e-mail from a supposed legal or Government source can be so convincing that it can fool even the shrewdest among us, as can a request to transfer money or pay a bill. However, the fight against scams is hotting up. As well as the many reliable channels which can inform and advise about scams (including the UK Action Fraud), there is also a user-friendly Friends Against Scams website, (a National Trading Standards Scams Team initiative which aims to protect and prevent people from becoming victims of scams by empowering communities to ‘Take a Stand Against Scams.’) Friends Against Scams is designed to inspire action, highlight the scale of the problem, change the perceptions of why people fall for scams, and make scams a community, regional and national topic. And what’s more, Friends Against Scams offers a free, easy-to-use online learning service where anyone can learn about the different types of scams and how to spot and support a victim. The session – which takes around fifteen minutes to complete – can be done in the comfort of your own home, in the workplace or even on your phone while on the move. When you have completed it – you 08:37 will even receive a certificate. Visit https://www. friendsagainstscams.org.uk/training/friends-elearning to find out more. Don’t be caught out by things like: • Phishing – this will most likely be an e-mail from the ‘bank’ designed to trick victims into revealing personal information and passwords. • Phishing: where you receive an e-mail that pretends to be from an authority (e.g. your bank) in which you’re asked to give out your passwords or personal information such as your address, telephone number, or other data. • Pharming - the fraudulent practice of directing online users to a fake website, which mimics the appearance of a real / legitimate one • Romance Scams - a confidence scam whereby a criminal displays fake romantic intentions towards a victim in order to gain their affection to then extort money. • Impersonation of UK officials - criminals impersonate a UK official to obtain personal information by claiming that the victim is due a refund or must make an urgent payment. • Ad Clicking: where hackers encourage you to click on a link (perhaps by e-mail, or on a webpage) which will then open malware or simply ask for your personal information. For details on existing and the latest scams to affect the public, trades and businesses across Cambridgeshire, visit https://cambridgeshireinsight. org.uk/capasp/ Safe Local Trades are proud to be a partner of this initiative. s e p t e m be r 2 0 1 9

Your Finances

Financial Planning - The Liberty Difference - by Matthew Biggs - Liberty Partnership Ltd

A new client is someone who typically has been introduced to us by an existing client and they have a need to talk to someone about a financial matter such as their pension or how they can create an investment. We sometimes call this ‘the messy part’. Anxiety levels may be riding high and confidence levels sometimes low, and it can all appear to be quite daunting! Quickly, they will settle in; it is the same as any new relationship where we get to know each other, and naturally confidence levels grow and anxiety subsides. Immediately, the conversation will be broadened out into, sometimes seemingly, unrelated matters. We will be thorough and clear with you and if you do not understand these often complex matters, then we will be patient, recapping and explaining again, in terms that you understand. A pension or an investment is simply a vehicle to enable you to plan in a particular way; they tell us little however about

54

D I S C O V E R I N G

Bourne

your hopes and dreams, your family life, health circumstances and objectives for the future. This to us is all critical in our role as financial planners we have to get to know you and to understand you, in order to help build a plan for your future. We are confident that you will enjoy the process and that you will find it rewarding. We will get quickly through the messy part and we will work with you over the long-term to help keep your plan on track. You will be given all the support you need and you will understand all that we will do for you. Yes, we promise that you will understand it all, even the complicated bits! So, take a moment to reflect on your own finances - What are your priorities? In what direction are they heading? If you are still not sure, then perhaps it is time to start creating your own financial plan. And we are certain that we can help. For your free initial discussion, please contact our office on 01778 342291.

Mayor

An Evening With Nettie Baker saturday september 14th

Words from the Mayor Brenda Johnson

Since my last article we have been very busy. We were invited to the Elsea Park Primary Academy where the pupils put on a really good play called “Foot Loose”, which depicted team-building. It had its serious side and funny side but, by the end, it had the pupils and some of the audience (including yours truly) shedding tears. I look forward to another visit to look round the school next term. We also went to Bourne Grammar School to see the pupils collect their sports awards. There were a lot of them and we were lucky enough to meet former British heptathlete and Olympic bronze medallist, Kelly Sotherton, who presented the awards. Our night out at the Round Table Ladies Night was really entertaining and I was even tempted to have a dance or two! Our next engagement was in a field the very next day. This was to attend the Scouts’ AGM, where we presented cheques to several worthy causes that the Scouts had raised by bag packing at the local supermarkets. There were also awards given to Scouts and Scout leaders. This new facility at Morton will enable them to have camps in our area. Bourne Town Council held a presentation night at the Town Hall where several awards were presented and Councillor David Mapp, last year’s Mayor, gave out his cheques. We also received an invite to the opening of the new cinema in Grantham where we watched ‘Horrible Histories’. Digby Court invited us to a dog show which was a little unusual for me but turned out to be a great afternoon, although the rain saw us running for cover indoors. However, it went well, as there were not too many dogs. I do believe all of them won at least one rosette and a bag of treats. We were judges and there were also residents and the lady from Three Counties Dog Rescue at the event. We also went to see the film “Rush” at the Old Town Hall, and it was great to be able to go and watch a film in Bourne again. Look out for more events at this great venue; they have a great little bar area and you can take your drinks up to the cinema as long as they are in plastic glasses. We are now looking forward to Bourne’s first ‘Cicle’ Festival. 60

I suppose it was when I was wondering how many quiz programmes I could watch on television in twenty-four hours, was when I realised that I needed a big project and desperately. So after a few text messages, phone calls and a proposal to the Bourne Abbey Church Social Committee, “An evening with Nettie Baker’ was born. After reading one of her books including ‘Tales of a Rock Star’s Daughter’, ‘More Tales of a Rock Star’s Daughter’ and ghost-wrote her dad’s autobiography, ‘Hellraiser’. Not only is Nettie the daughter of probably one of the world’s most famous drummers (Ginger Baker of 1960s’ ‘super-group’ Cream, Blind Faith and The Graham Bond Organisation amongst others), she is also very charismatic, funny and can tell heaps of stories regarding life and the ups-and-downs of growing up with a rock star as a father. With so many stories to tell such as what it was like growing up rubbing shoulders with some of the world’s greatest musicians who would pop round for coffee; when her mum gave a policeman a ‘thick ear’ because she didn’t like the way he spoke to her; and her dad being on the receiving end of a stray firework going off down his shirt, it promises to be an entertaining night. Some stories you will find funny, some startling, but all will be fascinating. The venue will be Bourne Abbey Church Hall and will start with a two- course meal, a raffle, a quick quiz of music from the 1960s, before Nettie will take to the stage and finish with a Q and A session with her, before lastly doing a book signing for anybody who would like to purchase a personally signed copy of one of her books for £15. The evening will start at 7pm promptly. Tickets are on sale for £12.00 each, but as numbers are limited, I strongly suggest you buy them, sooner the better, as this will sell-out. The tickets can be purchased from Judy Smith (01778 422219), or any information from myself, with payment in advance securing a seat and all profits going to Bourne Abbey Church. There is no bar, but feel free to bring your own drinks. Paul Mason s e p t e m be r 2 0 1 9

Pets and Vets

Autumn Watch for Pets With the move from August into September we are now officially into the autumn and with the change of seasons, a new set of challenges also arrives for our pets. The warmth and wetness of this summer has allowed many parasites to survive and thrive. Keeping up with preventative flea treatment is still very important, especially if you don’t want a colony of fleas luxuriating in your house when the winter central heating is turned on!

my dog and not miss any. If a tick is removed within twenty-four hours of attachment, it is unlikely to pass on tick-borne diseases such as Lyme disease and Borrelia – two very nasty conditions - but unless you are very fastidious checking all of your animal’s skin, it is easier to treat with effective parasiticides.

Flies are beginning to die down and the risk of fly strike is reducing but not gone.It is still important to check rabbits on a daily basis, to see if they are dirty at the back end or have any open wounds that flies will be attracted to. This also applies to dogs and cats that are old and unable to groom themselves well. Matts of fur can hide skin problems that attract flies - geriatric animals can get fly strike too. It is an awful condition which often has a tragic outcome, so is best prevented. The humidity throughout the summer has meant that we have seen more ticks than ever before. Autumn is a key time in their life-cycle where they are looking for a new host, (mostly our dogs and cats) for a fresh blood feed. If your dog is short-haired, it is easy to check him every day for signs of ticks, although some really tiny ticks look just like a skin tag and can be easily overlooked. I find it easier to give a combined flea and tick treatment to

Walking though woods that are changing into autumn colours is wonderful at this time of year, but Seasonal Canine Illness (SCI) is still around and you must be vigilant. When walking in woods, make sure your dog stays well hydrated. It is possible that harvest mites may be a factor and spraying your dog against these may help, but their involvement in the disease is still not proven. A dog that becomes ill with lethargy, vomiting and diarrhoea within seventy-two hours of a forest walk may have SCI. Fortunately, it is a rare condition and the cause is still unknown. It can be fatal, but with supportive care through your vet, most animals will recover, so if you have any worries, get in touch sooner rather than later.

By Deirdre Wilson

Finally, yes, the nights are getting darker and car accidents involving cats increase in frequency. If your pet wears a collar, then a reflective one is very helpful. Bring your cats in earlier before the dusk fully settles and hopefully enjoy some lovely warm autumn days together. Maybe we’ll have an Indian summer after all!

This is an unremunerated position and is for an initial term of four years. BUC are custodians of a portfolio of assets, the revenues of which are utilised in a number of areas within the Parish of Bourne. To apply for this position please submit your CV and a short covering letter outlining your relevant experience by 16 September 2019 to: Mrs G S Clingo, Clerk to the Trustees, Bourne United Charities, The Red Hall, South Street, Bourne, Lincolnshire PE10 9LY.
