Introduction
Welcome to Your October Issue. Welcome to October’s issue. Don’t forget that “Stoptober” is now upon us, a movement that has already driven over one million ‘quit attempts’ to date and is the biggest mass quit attempt in the country. It is based on research that shows that if you can stop smoking for twenty-eight days, you are five times more likely to stay smoke-free for good. Why not have a go this year? We’ve included a feature this month on one way of quitting. For more useful information, search ‘Stoptober’, or visit www.healthypeterborough.co.uk . With the money you’ve saved then treat yourselves to a Christmas to remember – less than a hundred days from now! But before then, don’t forget to stock up for when those “Trick or Treaters” pay you a visit on Hallowe’en. Don’t forget to change your clocks (“Spring forward, Fall back”), as we lose the hour on Sunday October 27th. And finally, a huge thank you goes out to Rex Needle, our resident historian whose monthly “Discovering …” features have informed and entertained us all for over six years – enjoy your retirement Rex!

There’s certainly been no shortage of events to consider, both within the last month and also in the weeks to come. Bourne basked in glorious sunshine as the first “Cicle Festival” thrilled the whole area. I still wince when I think of the speed with which the cyclists defied logic by remaining unscathed as they hurtled into the Market Place from West Street! Then the good folk of Dyke welcomed everyone to their ever-popular Scarecrow Festival the following weekend, and all this against a national backdrop of Ashes drama, Posh finding their form with several victories, and all set fair for a thrilling Rugby World Cup Looking ahead, on a personal note, our delight at hearing that we’re to become first-time grandparents in the new year has been slightly tempered when we can now enter the “empty nesters” club with our youngest, Patrick, taking the waters (and more) in Manchester. And finally, I was asked last week whether I thought all of those yellow bikes adorning our countryside after the “Cicle Festival” would go for re-cycling. I said, “Don’t ask me, I wheely don’t know, I’m not the spokesman, but I’ll give him a bell!” Enjoy the read!

What is HiiT Training?
by Claire Saunders, Renu - Health, Beauty & Fitness
H
igh intensity interval Training (HiiT) can sound like it is a training regime for elite athletes, yet it has become one of the most popular training formats to reach the fitness industry over the last six years. HiiT training consists of short bursts of various activities to elevate the heart rate and increase muscular strength and endurance with variable breaks in between. Here are a few reasons why it has become so popular: Time-effective results The pressures of modern life can leave us little time for specific exercise, particularly if it is not top on our favourite activities list. HiiT classes or workouts should only last up to thirty to forty minutes, so it is much more achievable to fit them into your busy schedule. Suitable for everyone The term “high intensity” can suggest that it is not suitable if you are unaccustomed to regular exercise. A well-trained instructor will be able to establish your current fitness levels and offer alternatives to ensure you are working at the right intensity for you. For example, a novice exerciser will achieve the same results with thirty seconds of vigorous marching on the spot as a more highly trained individual will get through thirty second sprints.
Did anyone say “menopause” and “middle-age-spread”? This type of activity helps to balance hormones and relieve menopausal symptoms and help to aid weight loss, particularly in the mid section. Here at Renu, I have been advocating the benefits of a thirty-minute, circuit-based workout for the last twelve years, and many women of all ages and abilities have achieved fantastic results when they follow our gym or class programme. Do you have to attend a class? HiiT training is varied and transferable to your circumstances. I offer classes at Renu on a weekly basis, but I also show how you can utilise our gym equipment to get the same results. You can follow a HiiT programme on a spin bike, when you are out for a walk, or with
a minimum of equipment in your kitchen. You just need a programme that is suitable for you. Feel-good factor HiiT results in increased endorphin releases in the brain, which plays a role in dampening physical and emotional stress. This helps to improve mood, improve sleep patterns and help you feel more motivated for your next workout. Claire teaches HiiT classes at Renu every Thursday morning and Monday and Thursday evenings. She also promotes HiiT style training in the Renu gym and in spin classes, available all week. If you would like to find out how the Renu thirty-minute workout programmes can help you, please contact our reception team.

Bourne Welcomes New Slimming World Consultant A slimmer who has transformed her life by losing four stone will be running the weight loss groups on Tuesday evenings and Wednesday mornings in Bourne. An experienced Slimming World Consultant, Lesley ThornalleyGrey has recently moved to the area from award-winning groups in North Hertfordshire and is looking forward to helping people in Bourne and surrounding areas to lose weight successfully. Lesley is so proud to continue the great support that retired consultant, Jenny Summers, has been providing for the past nine years. A former Senior Registered Nurse, Lesley knows just how it feels to be on a weight loss journey. Lesley had tried most of the ‘faddy or starvation diets’ during her earlier adult years and, until she found
Slimming World, felt she was deprived of the foods she loved and would get two days into the diet before giving up! By food optimising with Slimming World, Lesley discovered she could eat well without that feeling of deprivation and still lose weight. “I feel better now, healthier and fitter than I’ve ever felt, and it’s all through eating fabulously tasty, ‘fillingfree’ food with generous portions and having that sprinkling of the foods that with other diets I’d been told I couldn’t have!’ she explains. Meeting her future-husband in 2009, she knew that she wanted to be slimmer and feel more confident on her wedding day so, by following the Extra Easy plan with Slimming World, and by food optimising around the wedding planning and preparations, she
BEFORE
achieved her dream weight and looked and felt fabulous in her wedding dress! In 2012, when her son was born, Lesley decided it was time to change from her nursing career to that of a Slimming World Consultant where she could combine her new life of being a mother with still helping, supporting and empowering people, through encouraging members to achieve their dream weight; just as she had been herself. Lesley says, “As someone who has lost weight myself, I know the challenges we all face which is why, along with group members, I will be there to support each and every one of my members all the way to their chosen target weight, and to help them to maintain it, to be slim for life! By setting aims and sharing plans, recipes and ideas and working together with like-minded people, we can overcome any challenge we can face when losing weight. That’s why in my groups there’s always buckets of practical foodie talk, support, encouragement and fun – never any judgement or guilt!” Lesley’s groups meet every Tuesday evening at Bourne Abbey Church Hall, 5.30pm or 7.30pm, and every Wednesday morning at the Darby and Joan Hall, South Street, Bourne at 9.30am or 11.30am.

Don’t Lose Hope Café a
The former Nat West bank in Bourne Market Place took on a new lease of life in June this year when an enthusiastic team, including Bourne resident Nicola Brister, (an experienced school counsellor), sensed an opportunity presenting itself, right in the centre of town. They saw the potential for the beautiful and spacious old building to become a centre for a range of counselling services within its many small rooms, whilst also having the light and airy front section of the former bank transformed into a café, open to all and run primarily by volunteers and trained professionals. The Don’t Lose Hope Café serves as a way of raising funds to support the counselling service. It is a perfect venue to relax over a variety of teas, speciality coffees, sandwiches, jacket potatoes, home-made soup or a slice of delicious home-made cake; but it is also somewhere to go to find a friendly face or someone to talk to, providing an opportunity to make new friends. It’s important to note that the café, which
8

has already become a regular meeting spot for many, does not require for there to be any mental health issues for the customers. Art therapies, craft workshops and a weekly, drop-in café for young people are among the many initiatives that have already taken off within the café space. The drop-in café is a particularly heartwarming story to date, with up to twenty

teenagers, (from Years 7 to 11), attending this free facility which is available every Thursday evening from 6.30 until 8.30, and run by the Youth Activity Team. Loneliness is a huge issue in our area, and National Lottery funding has enabled several volunteers to be trained as listeners, so from next month, on specific days, the Don’t Lose Hope listening service will be available for people to come in and talk, without the need for an appointment. On the subject of involving Bourne and district’s young people, Nicola is proud to announce that Don’t Lose Hope has now been licensed to become a Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme centre. There are already twelve students taking part for their “voluntary service”, whilst one has
seen the chance to develop his skills as a baker within the Scheme. The counsellors at Don’t Lose Hope are trained and experienced in either Person Centred or Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. Since the opening day, the number of counsellors has almost doubled, to eleven and, in that time, 147 referrals have led to 548 sessions being delivered. Of these, 268 were free of charge, and 43% of the clients have been under sixteen years of age, (having found it too expensive to seek help elsewhere). The counsellors all work in other settings as well as for charity, including Cruse Bereavement Care, GP practices, schools, prisons and private practice, and are experienced in working with a broad range of issues, including anxiety, depression, relationships and loss. Photography : Gordon’s Photographic and Stamford Mercury
Nicola would like to take this opportunity to give heartfelt thanks to everyone who has contributed in any way to have made it such a fabulous and successful first three months. There’s no question of Hope being Lost if this early progress can be maintained! Further information and details of counselling fees and plans for the future, including a “community garden” on the Wellhead in Bourne, can be found at www.dontlosehope.co.uk .

Preventing Gum Disease Healthy gums are the foundation of a healthy mouth. Unfortunately, most adults have some form of gum disease (periodontitis), but it often goes undetected for many years. This causes irreversible gum and bone damage, eventually resulting in the loss of teeth. However, a dental hygienist is qualified to treat such gum disease and here are: Six key benefits in seeing your hygienist or dentist regularly. Preventing Progressive Gum and Bone Loss. Periodontitis may manifest as bleeding gums, bad breath and loose teeth, but it may also be hidden. Fortunately, gum disease can be stopped and even reversed if caught in the early stages. Your hygienist will treat active disease, plus provide a tailored brushing regimen. Cleaning those ‘Hard to Reach’ Spots. Even people with excellent oral hygiene benefit from a hygienist’s help to find hidden plaque and calculus (tartar). Preventing Bad Breath. Halitosis odours are released by bacteria living under the gum edges. Dental scaling can effectively remove this harmful material.
Creating a Whiter Smile. Some external stains on your teeth are due to tea, coffee, tobacco, red wine and other dietary factors, and can’t be removed by brushing alone. However, hygienist polishing can restore your teeth to their natural whiteness. Preventing Systemic Diseases. Poor dental hygiene is scientifically linked to the progression of heart and respiratory diseases and diabetes. To Prevent Oral Cancer. Your hygienist is trained to screen your mouth for early signs of oral cancer, and to provide advice on risk factors for oral cancer, such as smoking and alcohol. The Priestgate Clinic have just celebrated their first anniversary and are delighted to still be welcoming new patients for general dentistry, orthodontics and minor oral surgery. To book an appointment with Priestgate Dental Clinic’s highly experienced hygienist, then please contact ring 01733865000 or e-mail reception@priestgateclinic.co.uk.
Dentistry with a difference It’s a year since the Priestgate Dental Clinic opened, and we’re delighted by the fantastically positive responses we’ve received. Come and experience a different style of dentistry, with a focus on minimally invasive general dentistry and consultant expertise in Orthodontics & Oral Surgery.

Stop Smoking Today Many people ask me if hypnotherapy can help them give up smoking; well, hypnotherapy has the reputation for being the best way to quit smoking available. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can help someone who is determined to quit smoking for good, by using your imagination to create a non-smoking future which is positive, empowering, and one that allows you to take control not only of your smoking habits but of your life. Benefits of stopping smoking are amazing – You will: • have a decreased chance of having a heart attack after twenty-four hours of stopping. • no longer be taking in 4,500 cell-destroying chemicals. • learn to control cravings.
• save money and be able to spend money on things which can improve your quality of life, rather than undermine it. • no longer endanger those around you with your ‘passive smoking’. The ‘stop smoking hypnotherapy session’ works by first explaining why the brain fools us into thinking it is acceptable to smoke. The hypnosis part of the stop smoking treatment is a key stage to cementing the change during which the client experiences around forty-five minutes of hypnosis. During the hypnosis process, the subconscious mind effectively “rewires” itself to help the person’s willpower and commitment to smoking cessation. “Inhale the future, exhale the past.”
• have more energy.
• reduce the risk of developing illness.
The stop smoking hypnotherapy formula works regardless of how many cigarettes you smoke or how long you have been smoking. The treatment is tailored to you as an individual so you can get the best out of your life and helps you to realise your full potential, in a relaxed comfortable environment.
• no longer smell of tobacco or smoke.
“Regain your health, wealth and wellbeing.”
• enjoy the taste of food more.
If you would like to book an appointment or find out more about how to quit smoking for good, contact Christine on: 0780 9690 964 or contact@ beardwoodhypnotherapy.co.uk
• learn to control stress. • have skin with a much-improved appearance. • feel fitter and healthier.
• improve your breathing and fitness levels. • feel happier, more confident and in more control. • have improved fertility levels.

Words from the Mayor
2020 HOLIDAYS OUT NOW!
Brenda Johnson
What a month we have had! We saw the first ever “Ciclefest” in Bourne and it was a well-run and exciting event. The sun shone and Bourne was full of people, with most Bourne town councillors out and about, helping and ready to showcase Bourne. The following weekend saw the Scarecrow festival in Dyke with about forty scarecrows around the village. To find out the results of the raffle and all scarecrow winners go to the Dyke Village Hall website. It was really great to be able to open a new independent bookshop in Bourne, located in the Burghley Arcade. It is bright and accessible and I really hope you will all enjoy supporting this new business. Please note that the South Street public toilets have now been re-opened and are being run by the Bourne Town Council, something that the Town Council have been fighting for since the District Council closed this facility. The Town Council has also now employed a street cleaner on a part-time basis to attempt to keep the town centre cleaner. What a delight to see Mandy Delaine-Smith recognised as our “Community Champion” for this year, for all the work she does at the outdoor swimming pool. It is now closed for the season but with the great weather we have had during the summer, it has brought lots of people to this wonderful facility, which is run completely by volunteers. Bourne has so much to offer at the Abbey Lawn. The Bowls Club invited us to present trophies after their candlelight bowls which was a very pleasant evening. The clubhouse was full, and the club goes from strength to strength. Tickets are available for my Civic Dinner being held at the Corn Exchange on Friday October 11th at 7pm. There will be a four-course meal, an Elvis tribute act and a local disco for entertainment, so you can dance the night away. Tickets can be bought from the Town Council offices. I would like to finish by saying a big thank you to all the staff that work for the Bourne Town Council, particularly:

But most important is our Town Clerk, Ian Sismey, who is always going ‘above and beyond’ for the town. 20

“Let There be Lights” at the Nene Valley Railway This winter, Nene Valley Railway will bring customers a brand new experience … a sixty-minute Winter Light Spectacular! Arriving at Wansford, passengers will gather on the platform for the big reveal then, once on-board the heated carriages, you will find your allocated seat, sit back and enjoy a magical train ride, viewing the beautiful light displays between Wansford and Overton Station, while a musical accompaniment adds to the spectacle. There will be a short interval as the train changes ends at Peterborough, before the fairy-tale journey home to Wansford. The turntable café will be open until the train’s departure, offering a selection of hot and hearty snacks.
Please note… Santa will not feature at this event, as he’s busy on the railway’s “Santa Steam Experience”. A Nene Valley Railway spokesman said, “By running this at the same time as our Santa trains, we have broadened the railway’s appeal; we are now offering something for adults and older children to enjoy at Christmas too.” Nene Valley Railway, Wansford Station, Stibbington, Peterborough PE8 6LR. The Fabulous Fun-filled Festival and How the Town Joined in! Bourne Baptist Church engaged with the “Cicle Event” that was staged in Bourne over the weekend of August 31st and September 1st. The church wanted to support the event, therefore the leadership made the decision to not have a morning service and instead put on some stalls to support the event. As the race start and finish line was situated very close to the entrance of the church the members of the congregation hosted: • A cake café, offering drinks and home-made cakes for a £2 donation which was to be given to a charity (‘RE-CYCLE’ - A charity that provides push bikes to help with education, health care and employment). An impressive £230.50 was raised.
• A static exercise bike challenge, offering an opportunity to see how far people could cycle in three minutes; the furthest that was reached was 1.7 miles. These riders accompanied Machala who was riding another training bike for a gruelling three hours - a sterling effort! • A free craft table was also available for people to colour in a bike picture and then attach it to a stick to create a flag to wave as the riders crossed the race finish line. Nick Humphreys, the lead pastor at the church, said, “The Cicle Race was a really positive event for the town and, overall, it was organised and run extremely well. Those people that I saw on the Sunday, lining the course looked to be having a great time. Personally, watching the ladies time trial racers come across the finish line was exhilarating, and I was amazed at the speeds they were travelling. Bourne Baptist Church certainly would look to get involved again next year if the Festival was to be repeated.”

Rex Needle – Farewell and Many Thanks For the past six years, the readers of both “Discovering Bourne” and “Discovering the Deepings” have had the good fortune to have been entertained every month by a piece of wellresearched and informative writing on a specific feature in the local area, usually with some element of historical interest. These monthly contributions I know have been a treat for many and a “Welcome to our part of South Lincolnshire” greeting for the thousands of “newcomers” who have made their home in our towns and villages in recent years. It is with a feeling of gratitude for what Rex Needle has produced for us over the years, yet also regret that he will be producing no more, that I am informing you of his decision to retire. This will bring to an end, not only this six-year sojourn as our resident historical guru, but more significantly his long and illustrious career as a former Fleet Street journalist; as the editor of the “Bourne website” since 1998; and as the author of several books. Approaching “four score years and ten”, Rex recently informed us of his decision to close the pages of his wonderful working life. Our magazines will be all the poorer for this, but his back-catalogue will always be available for any aspiring young writer to learn just how this ‘writing lark’ should be done! Our thanks for your many contributions, Rex, and best wishes to both you and Elke for a long and relaxing retirement.
Macmillan Coffee Morning at The Croft The “World’s Biggest Coffee Morning” on Friday September 27th is Macmillan’s biggest fundraising event for people facing cancer, and there will be thousands of people getting involved up and down the country, in various different venues. The Croft, (the retirement complex on North Road, Bourne), will be holding their second Macmillan Coffee Morning, following last year’s fabulous effort when £500 was raised, which will be hard to follow. It has been decided that, this year, the money raised should be used locally. Therefore, the cheque will be presented to Mrs Moira Beattie O.B.E., Chairperson of the Women’s Committee on Friday October 4th at 11.00am at The Croft. oc tob e r 2019
Seaside Hunt Success for Maddie and William Two of our regulars who enter every “Treasure Hunt” competition which we set are seen here with their grandad Dave, having been successful in August’s “Seaside Hunt”. Maddie (9), and her brother William (7) live in Northorpe and attend Thurlby Primary Academy. They shared the £50 and Maddie is going to buy some fish for her aquarium, whilst William asked if he could spend it all on sweets! As part of our ongoing commitment to the community, “Discovering Bourne” also donated £100 from the profits of the Hunt to “Don’t Lose Hope”, a very worthy local cause who are featured in this month’s magazine. A big thank you to all of the shops and businesses who took part in the August challenge.

Your Finances
Are you Investing or Speculating? by Adrian Hallas DipPFS, Independent Financial Adviser
I
f you are buying shares in a company, you ought to know what they are worth, so let’s look at a simplified example.
If Acme Ltd makes a profit of £1m in a year and has 20 million shares, then each share has earned £0.05. This value is termed Earnings Per Share (EPS). If you bought your shares a year ago, when the price was £1.00, then in theory you have made a 5% return on your investment. However, the company may decide to pay a dividend of 2p per share and re-invest the other 3% of profit, in the hope that the re-investment will boost future earnings and consequently the amount investors are willing to pay for the shares. So, in pursuit of a 5% return, you could look for a company that has had consistent increases in earnings of at least 3% per year, and has paid consistent dividends of at least 2%. For each share, you would hope to receive 2% per year in dividends (which you could re-invest) and see the capital value increase by 3% per year. In this example, the ratio of the price of the share to the EPS is 20:1 (£1.00 : £0.05), which makes sense for a 5% return. This ratio is termed Price to Earnings (P/E).
So why would someone be willing to pay £3.00 per share, making the P/E ratio 60:1? Well, this is where we move from investing to speculating. So far, we have based the share price on the performance that the company has been consistently able to demonstrate. This is the approach taken by Warren Buffett, (famous American business magnate and investor), and is known as ‘value investing’. But what if Acme Ltd discovers a revolutionary way to produce widgets? Now investors will expect earnings to grow more rapidly and are therefore willing to pay more for the shares. As the share price rises and the stock gains visibility in the financial press, more and more investors jump on the bandwagon. Very soon, the share price becomes over-inflated, bearing no relation to the profitability of the company. The eventual outcome is predictable, with the “.com bubble” around the year 2000 being a good example of this. So, is ‘value investing’ the approach to take? Not necessarily, as you could miss out on increases, or endure losses, due to market innovation. However, speculating on the growth of a company requires an indepth analysis and is best left to professional investors.
Always in your best interest Independent Financial Advice, that puts your best interest at the forefront of every recommendation.

Your Garden
OCTOBER Gardening Tips “In the other gardens And all up the vale, From the Autumn bonfires See the smoke trail!” Robert Louis Stevenson from “Autumn Fires” This, to me, epitomises gardens and particularly allotments in October, as people are clearing away the remnants of the summer crops and burning the debris. That’s what it’s mainly all about in October, clearing away and preparing the ground for the winter months. A lot of the spent crops can be composted but it is best to shred woody stems such as sweetcorn, runner beans and cabbage and to burn any diseased crops. I always dig the plot over and “put it to bed.” Once dug and manured, (no need to dig it in), cover the soil with plastic or weed suppressant for the winter as this keeps the weeds at bay and, as it keeps the soil relatively warm, planting can start earlier in the spring. This time of year is perfect for moving or planting new fruit bushes and trees. Bare-rooted trees will benefit from the warmth still in the soil, which will help root development before the soil becomes too cold. If you like to use herbs, you could sow a pot of basil seeds and put it in a propagator or on a warm windowsill, keeping the soil moist. Parsley and mint can be dug up from an established clump, put in a pot and kept on the windowsill – much cheaper than buying pots from the supermarket! Crops that can be sown this month are: • Early broad beans. • Rhubarb crowns - or dividing large oversized crowns. • Japanese over - wintering onion sets. Although large onion sets look stronger, small or medium ones are less likely to bolt in the spring. • Last chance to transplant spring cabbages – be sure to net them to prevent pigeons eating the young leaves. • Plant garlic if you haven’t already done so. • Broad beans – early varieties should overwinter. Other jobs for this month include: • Continue to earth up celery and leeks. • Protect cauliflowers by bending a leaf over the curd. • Finish pruning blackberries and raspberries. • Keep removing yellow leaves from brassicas – leaving them on the ground risks spreading grey mould. • If you haven’t already done so, earth up or stake (or both) Brussels sprouts and sprouting broccoli plants. • Pick the unripe tomatoes and put a few in a bag with a ripe banana – this gives off ethylene gas which speeds up ripening. • Cure pumpkins and squashes – cut and leave them to dry out in the sun; it hardens the skins and they will keep for longer. • Cut back asparagus and artichoke foliage and compost. • Remove runner bean canes; if left in the ground they will easily rot.
Enjoy those wonderful sunny days of autumn!

The West Street Centre Two Years Since the Pop-ups Hit Bourne!
On November 1st 2017, Bourne witnessed a new phenomenon when Emanay Peters, owner of the popular Petorama Petfoods Ltd on West Street, opened up a section of her building to the first “pop-ups” on the streets of Bourne. Realising that her huge premises were more than adequate for her thriving business, and with the desire to provide the people of her town with a wider range of shopping options, Emanay established a number of small, but perfectly formed, retail spaces, from which entrepreneurs can trade. Just walk through, past the bulging shelves of pet food supplies and accessories, and soon you will be in “browsing heaven”, as each one of these pop-ups presents you with a fascinating array of interesting and very appealing items.

This has been the summer of scams, in the form of postal, telephone and on-line fraud attempts – targeting everyone from holidaymakers to online daters. One of the latest and perhaps not so well-known scams is again targeting consumers, this time via automated phone calls pretending to be from their bank or credit card company. Victims have received an automated phone call claiming to be from their bank or card provider, saying there has been a suspicious transaction on their account. They were then asked to verify the transaction by pressing a number on their phone to take them through to an “agent” – who is actually a fraudster. Banking and finance trade association, UK Finance is reminding consumers of five warning signs to look out for during a phone call, which suggest that the caller could be a scammer: • The caller is insistent and doesn’t give you time to think or tries to stop you speaking to a family member or friend. • The caller asks you to transfer money to a different account. • The caller asks for your online banking passwords or card PIN.
iscovering Bourne 76.5 x 110.indd 1
06/05/2019 08:37 four-digit
• The caller asks you to withdraw money and hand it over for “safekeeping”. • The caller offers to send a courier to your home to collect cash, PINs, cards or cheque books to “protect” you from fraud. It is always worth remembering that your bank, card provider or the police will NEVER contact you asking for personal information or requesting you to transfer money to another account. If you feel uncomfortable or suspicious during a call, hang up and call your bank or card provider directly on its official phone number. And it doesn’t end there… Tax tricksters claiming to be from HMRC are also making misery for those running their own business through phishing scams. This is where an email purporting to be from HM Revenue & Customs can cause the recipient to become unnerved by content requesting money allegedly owed to the ‘tax man’. Scam e-mails of this sort not only look official but can often look like they’ve been sent from official government email addresses, making them harder to spot. Scammers sometimes even sign off phishing e-mails with the name or signature of a genuine HMRC employee for added authenticity. If you think you or a loved one may have been the victim of a scam, report it to ActionFraud online, or by calling 0300 123 2040. To find out how you can sign up for the fight against fraud, and read some tips on spotting a scam, visit #friendsagainstscams www. friendsagainstscams.org.uk 46

Being in Control - Is it a Virtue ? by Richard Wood
In modern times, we all like to be in control of our lives; it is not always possible, but we try to achieve it. We would not, for instance, want our friends to choose our meal at a restaurant (not often anyway!) However, if a person does not make a will, they are allowing the state to take control in respect of what happens to their property when they die. Sometimes that still works well, but in other instances it does not. Unmarried couples need to take particular care because there can be unintended consequences where the parties do not protect one another, especially as to who is entitled to the home, (unless
the title states that they hold as “Joint Tenants”). Otherwise there could be difficulties between family members which could mean that a vulnerable bereaved person is potentially made homeless. Anyone who is unsure of their rights should take legal advice and, if a couple is unmarried, wills should generally be prepared. Where some family members are to receive more than others, a careful note as to the reasons must be kept by the solicitor. If a will was to be challenged
by a disappointed “beneficiary”, the evidence should be provided to the solicitor by the “testator”, (the person who makes the will) at the time the will was drawn, to defend their wishes. We all take a lot of time on our social interests. However, we should ensure that those we love and care for are protected. Anyone unsure about their property rights, or what would happen on the death to their property, should take our advice. So “being in control” is certainly a virtue … but also necessary for us all.

Do You Know About a “Deed of Variation”? - by Matthew Biggs - Liberty Partnership Ltd
An inheritance from a loved one is their final gift to you which would serve as a wonderful reminder of the person who has made it all possible. However, in certain instances, you might think that other people, perhaps family members, charities or anyone you feel could benefit more from an inheritance, should have received it. Well, did you know that you can change who receives an inheritance after the estate has been distributed?
The most important thing to remember is that there is a two-year window. Any Deed of Variation must be drawn up within twenty-four months of the death of the deceased and must be signed by all the executors and beneficiaries of the estate to be valid.
A Deed of Variation allows you to make changes to a deceased person’s will. An example of this is where an individual dies and leaves all that they own to their spouse. The question at this point is that, with the onset of time and perhaps ill health, is it wise to inherit all of a former spouse’s estate? A Deed of Variation could instead

make more sense, so that assets bypass them completely and, instead, pass directly to their children to perhaps use as a deposit for their first home, maybe pay off a mortgage or even help grandchildren with university fees.

BOURNE ORGAN CLUB and KEYBOARD CONCERTS “WEDNESDAY NIGHT IS MUSIC NIGHT”
n the third Wednesday evening of the month, at 7.30pm at O Bourne Corn Exchange,we meet for an evening of musical entertainment. The music is provided by the top-flight artistes of the modern electronic organ. The modern organ can reproduce the sound of an initial instrument or a full orchestra. The organists are very talented musicians who provide us with an evening of varied and entertaining music. They are all showmen (or ladies) and can be relied upon for an amusing and varied evening. The music ranges from ’60s music, through film and theatre melodies to jazz and light classics. The programme consists of an hour of entertainment followed by a break for free tea, coffee and biscuits followed by a raffle before the second half begins. Artistes appearing include John Bowdler, currently one of the resident organists at The Tower Ballroom in Blackpool, and Dirk
Jan Ranzijn from Holland who has his own exclusive programme on Dutch TV and travels all over Europe. Several British artistes including Chris Powell and Andrew Nix also regularly play on television and in America, Australia and Europe. Bourne Organ Club has been in existence for over twenty years. It came from a group of like-minded enthusiasts who decided it would be possible to attract an audience for open concerts featuring star performers. This formula has worked well and has been a regular attraction for the people of Bourne, with audiences exceeding one hundred people for the most popular performers. If you have recently moved to Bourne, or are a long-time resident, and enjoy good music, you will be made very welcome at Bourne Organ Club. Why not come and share this popular form of entertainment?

Pets and Vets
By Deirdre Wilson
Deal or No Deal
Three years have passed since the most divisive vote this country has had in recent times, and the Brexit debate has become hotter since Boris Johnson became Prime Minister. The October 31st deadline is fast approaching and, no matter which side of the debate you are on, the uncertainty and confusion for businesses and individuals continues.
When March 2019 was the deadline, the government sent information to vets regarding the possible effects of a “No-deal Brexit” on the movement of pets across Europe. So, if you have a pet passport, or are planning to get one, the following information is still important for you. The simplest possible outcome that the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) can negotiate with the European Union is that there will be no change in the current legislation surrounding pet passports. Your pet dog, cat or ferret will need to be microchipped before it can be given a rabies vaccine and issued with a Pet Passport. It will be twenty-one days before you can travel across Europe. On returning to Britain, dogs will need a tapeworm treatment 24 to 120 hours on entering the UK. A second possible outcome is that the above regulations will apply, but within ten days of travel an official veterinarian will need to issue a health certificate in addition to the Pet Passport. A health certificate will be required every time you wish to travel to Europe with your
64
D I S C O V E R I N G
Bourne
pet and, on arrival in the EU, you will need to report to a Travellers’ Point of Entry.
The most complicated possible outcome will be to return almost to the pre-passport days. In this case, a rabies injection is given after microchipping, but a blood test is required thirty days later to ensure that the rabies vaccination has taken full effect. There will be a three month wait from the date of blood testing before travel is allowed, so a minimum of four months of planning is required. If the blood test comes back showing the vaccine has not had the required effect, the whole process will need to be repeated. An official veterinarian would again need to issue a health certificate for every journey abroad, when all the requirements have been met. As the decision on a Brexit deal or no-deal will be on October 31st, 2019, if you are planning to travel with your pet to Europe after this date you need to start considering the above information now and making decisions on your travel plans. You may decide that the most complicated outcome is likely and will need to have a blood test for your pet as soon as possible, or you may decide that the first option will happen, and you need do nothing. Unfortunately, there is no definitive answer and there won’t be one until the October deadline. Therefore, let’s hope for the easiest solution, but prepare for the most complicated one!

Cycling Festival Draws the Crowds Bourne CiCLE Festival has been hailed an outstanding success by organisers, South Kesteven District Council. With elite men’s and women’s road races, an amateur riders’ sportive and a women’s team time trial, the district’s first ever cycling festival drew cheering crowds in Bourne and spectators across the district. Town shops were decorated yellow, groups ran fund-raising activities throughout the weekend, and The Wellhead staged a full programme of entertainment.
Triple Olympic gold medallist Ed Clancy at the start line
Bourne Wheelers cyclist, Sian Botteley, provided a professional eye on the race, having been prevented from riding by a collarbone injury. Her Bourne CiCLE Festival social media feed from the lead race car detailed every twist, turn and development in both the women’s and men’s elite races. A live race commentary drew 550 listeners for Saturday’s top race and more than 800 on Sunday. Spectators lined the routes, enjoying picnics and barbecues as they cheered riders through. There was so nearly a fairy-tale ending in the men’s elite race for Bourne professional rider Ali Slater. A graduate of the Bourne Wheelers club and riding on Sunday alongside Olympic triple gold medallist Ed Clancy with Vitus Pro Cycling, Ali was in the leading group as the race drew to a close, eventually finishing third. “It’s been a mega event and just brilliant to see it in my home town,” he said. “Next year let’s see if I can go two better.”
Bourne’s young Go Ride cyclists prepare to lead off the men’s peloton
SKDC ‘Cabinet Member for Growth’, Councillor Helen Goral, said; “We had high expectations for this event, and they have been exceeded. I spoke to a lot of people in Bourne and they were all massively enthusiastic and appreciative of the whole event. The atmosphere was amazing.”
brought together, planned and executed by an outstanding team from SKDC, Invest SK and all those who stepped up to help. This was a highly complex event, involving police, highways and a multitude of other local organisations, racing professionals and volunteers who came together on Saturday morning and delivered a near faultless event. It was nothing short of extraordinary.”
Andrew Norman, ‘Head of Visitor Economy’ for Invest SK said, “It’s been the most incredible weekend, and the feedback we have received is incredibly positive. All too often you hear criticism levelled at local authorities and it’s very rewarding to receive such positive comments. This festival has been
Typical of the comments received was one from a Pickworth resident, who enthused, “As long-serving residents of Pickworth, we would like to thank you all for the spectacular cycle race you ran through our village yesterday. May it be the first of many. Why should Yorkshire have it all?”

Figures shown are for comparability purposes; only compare fuel consumption and CO2 figures with other vehicles tested to the same technical procedures. These figures may not reflect real life driving results, which will depend upon a number of factors including the accessories fitted (post-registration), variations in weather, driving styles and vehicle load. There is a new test used for fuel consumption and CO2 figures (known as WLTP). The CO2 figures shown however, are based on a calculation designed to be equivalent to the outgoing (NEDC) test cycle and will be used to calculate vehicle tax on first registration. For more information, please see www.volkswagen.co.uk/owners/wltp or consult your retailer. Data correct at 05/19. Figures quoted are for a range of configurations and are subject to change due to ongoing approvals/changes. Please consult your retailer for further information. Official fuel consumption figures for the Golf model range in mpg (litres/100km): combined 32.5 (8.7) – 58.9 (4.8). Combined CO2 emissions 104 – 164 g/km. Excludes battery, electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles.
