Introduction

Welcome to Your November Issue. It’s getting closer by the day, and I’m talking turkey, (along with trees, tinsel and trimming-up!) as the whole wonderful Christmas season gathers momentum once more. This month’s issue features many local restaurants and hostelries offering all manner of attractions for the festive weeks ahead, so remember to book early for your special events. As we head towards the end of another year, I’d just like to express my thanks to all of the team here at Discovering Magazines on yet another bumper year. It has been made possible through a lot of hard work, alongside the continued wonderful features reaching us, month after month, from our contributors, and of course, you, the readers, who keep telling us that we’re getting it right – many thanks to you all.

It would appear that the whole Brexit bandwagon is rumbling towards some sort of a conclusion with the October 31st deadline. I wonder what will take its place on our newspaper front pages in the months to come, maybe the arrival of a new buzz-word … BRETURN !!! Just think, three more years and even more millions being spent on financing GB’s return to the welcoming arms of the E.U. and the word “backstop” being allowed to return to its original usage – that fielding position in cricket immediately behind the wicket-keeper for when the ball goes through his legs! Whatever the politicians throw at us, though, we’re used to it by now, and with this month’s issue of your favourite magazine in your hands, you can turn your attention to matters, much more interesting – I hear Christmas is less than ten weeks away. And finally: Latest football results: Real Madrid 3 Surreal Madrid Banana. A man just assaulted me with milk, cream and butter. How dairy! Enjoy the read … and for all you moustache cultivators, have a magnificent “Mo-vember”!

It’s Not Too Late to Look Great! Thirty Minutes at a Time by Claire Saunders, Renu - Health, Beauty & Fitness

F

or many of us, looking after ourselves will have been one of our top resolutions this year, whether it is to lose weight, become fitter, tone up our wobbly bits or to eat more healthily. So often, the pressures of our daily lives get in the way, and as the end of the year approaches, it becomes tempting to throw in the towel and wait until next year to start again. Taking the plunge and starting your healthy regime now will not only make you feel much better for the party season, it will also make it much more achievable for you to reach your goals next year. The good news is that you do not need to take hours out of your day to achieve results. Short duration workouts are becoming increasingly popular and deliver great results. Did you know, if you can find thirty minutes, three times a week for just four weeks, you will see results? Fitness levels are increased, excess fat diminishes and a new and improved body shape will start to be revealed! At Renu, we like to think we understand what it is like to be a busy woman in the modern world, which is why we have designed a workout that can be completed in just

thirty minutes but one that will deliver results fast. The best part is that you don’t have to stick to one particular type of exercise. It doesn’t matter if you choose the gym, indoor cycling or a studio class; you simply need to stick to the rule –“thirty minutes, three times a week”. Soon, you will be sleeping better, looking better and learning to love your reflection in the mirror! Of course, diet is just as important. Establishing healthy options is confusing at best and can seem time consuming. That is why we like to give you easy options that fit in with feeding a family and working through your lunch break. Starting anything new and outside our comfort zone can be a daunting experience, especially a gym - How do you dress? What shoes do you wear? Am I too ‘big’? Will there be a lot of

mirrors? Will people know it’s my first time? Will people judge me? - all of these are natural thoughts. However, in order to make a change, we need to take that first step, and we can help you do this in a welcoming, safe and comfortable environment. “A year ago, I felt sluggish, riddled with arthritis and tired. Now, my arthritis has almost disappeared and I feel much more alive. I have also lost eight pounds and nine and a half inches. If I were to give a tip to someone thinking of starting, I would say, ‘Do it. Take a risk and make connections with other like-minded women. You will get lots of support from all the staff at Renu’” – Suzanne. So, call us on 01778 423923 or come in and see us. After all, what have you got to lose … apart from inches and pounds?

Take control of your body 30 minutes at a time. Gym and Spin membership just £20 per month with no minimum contract or joining fee.

Hypnotherapy for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder There’s no doubt that living with OCD can feel incredibly isolating and debilitating. When left untreated, it can become progressively worse, and it can be very frustrating for individuals and their loved ones. Hypnotherapy for OCD is one of the most promising opportunities to consider. Let’s get to what you need to know!

• rereading or rewriting material. • repeating specific body movements. • repeating activities in safe multiples. • cancelling or undoing ‘bad’ behaviours. Having OCD takes up a lot of time out of the day and causes substantial distress in daily functioning.

What Is OCD?

What Is Hypnosis and How Does It Work?

Obsessions refer to unwanted, intrusive urges or thoughts that trigger powerful feelings of discomfort. These obsessions occur regularly, and they are beyond the person’s control, dominating a person’s life and restricting it.

Hypnosis is an ancient practice that treats illness by harnessing the power of the imagination. When you are in a state of deep hypnotic relaxation, your imagination becomes a powerful way to calm and take the sting out of the anxiety created and neutralising your intense emotions.

Common obsessions and compulsions in OCD are: • cleaning excessively. • fear and panic over sickness in themselves or others. • excessive bathing or brushing teeth. • avoiding certain objects, social activities. • rearranging things in a particular order. • repeatedly checking or switching off a particular object e.g. closing a door.

In a hypnotic trance state, your imagination is influenced to alter your experience and master your anxiety and panic, allowing you to distance yourself from an object or situation which causes distress. Hypnosis also helps re-programme and rewrite the unhelpful thoughts in your mind. Changing these thoughts can break bad habits and introduce healthier ways to function. “Turn down the pressure!”

Brooks Stairlifts from Cherryholt Mobility Centre

Your home is one of the most precious possessions, full of memories and at the heart of your family and social life. With the Brooks Stairlifts, there’s no longer any need to compromise your independence and struggle with the stairs in your beloved home. There is a wealth of features for your comfort and safety: 1 The padded seat and backrest for comfort. 2 The directional paddle switches are operated by the lightest touch. 3 A safety belt is included for added security. 4 The arms, footrest and seat fold away to allow easy access to the stairway. 5 The lockable swivel seat allows the user to safely board and leave the lift. 6

The Brooks stairlift fixes quickly and easily to your staircase, so there’s no mess when installing it.

7 A lockable on/off switch allows the user to prevent others, for example children, from using the lift.

8 A diagnostic digital display informs the user of the status of the lift. 9

Five safety sensors on the footrest and carriage stop the lift automatically if any obstruction is encountered on the stairs.

10 Remote controls, (two supplied) allow users to ‘call’ or ‘send’ the lift up and down the staircase. We also offer “try before you buy” with a stairlift fitted in our showroom. You’re more than welcome to pop in and we will show you how the stairlift works and answer any questions that you may want to ask.

Mayor

2020 HOLIDAYS OUT NOW!

Words from the Mayor Brenda Johnson

Another very active month, where we enjoyed a service in Stamford to celebrate the Battle of Britain followed by a parade by the Air Force personnel from RAF Wittering. Then back to Bourne to attend the Lions Fun Day and we ended up helping run a tombola stall! The following Sunday found us attending a civic service in Gainsborough. The Oddfellows Brass Band Concert at Bourne Corn Exchange and then the Stamford Brass Band in the Methodist Church were both really good events and enjoyed by a lot of people. We went to Digby Court for a race afternoon with the residents, dressing up with hats as well. It was great because we had toy money to bet with and Tony was the winner out of us all - shame it was just toy money! Maybe I should send him racing for real. The residents had a lot of fun, and a big thank you and well done to the staff. We were invited to attend the Sportsman’s Dinner at the Corn Exchange where footballer, Paul Merson, gave a talk on his career, and we were then entertained by the comedian, Jamie Sutherland. A great night out and a lot of money was raised for three very worthwhile causes: Bourne Town Hall, Butterfly Hospice Trust, and Macslogs. A trip to Raunds in Northamptonshire for a Quiz Night was very pleasant, meeting many lovely people. We enjoyed a ploughman’s supper and £1,400 was raised for their charity. To top the month off we were invited by The Lions to attend their Charter Dinner. Another delicious meal, and a great singer who was able to get most people up dancing.

Your Finances

Useful Questions To Ask a Financial Adviser by Adrian Hallas DipPFS, Independent Financial Adviser

leave you to decide if this promotes the best outcome for the client.

If you’re looking for pension or investment advice, a few strategic questions can clarify who you are dealing with. Are you really independent? An adviser is obliged to disclose if they are classified as independent or restricted. Restricted advisers are limited to using products from one, or a small number, of providers. Independent advisers are permitted to choose products from the whole market. However, many independent advice firms develop a Central Investment Proposition (CIP) which recommends a provider and product for each of the common client scenarios. A CIP saves the advice firm time and money, as it removes the necessity to perform ‘whole of market’ research for each client. This can be acceptable, providing the client is aware of the level of service they are paying for.

The ongoing servicing fee is for ensuring that the financial plan stays on track and that any changes to your personal circumstances are accounted for. Firms charge up to 1% per annum for this service, which can seriously impact the growth of your funds. As such, you should fully understand why the service is of benefit to you and what is included. Which tools do you use? An adviser cannot provide a worthwhile service without access to sophisticated financial planning tools. So, ask them which tools they use for fund selection, risk analysis, product charge comparisons and cash flow modelling. Look for firms that use

stochastic modelling* to compute the probability of achieving your financial goals. ( * a statistical process that uses probability and random variables to predict a range of probable investment performances.) Are you personally qualified to undertake this work? All regulated financial planners must be qualified to a minimum level, but some areas of advice require advanced certification. Firms circumvent this by stating that such advice will be signed off by other suitably qualified advisers, or even by outsourcing the advice. If you’re paying for specialised advice, make sure the person you are dealing with is personally qualified.

What do you charge for your services? There are typically two types of advice charge: an initial fee and an ongoing servicing fee. The initial fee relates to assessing the client’s financial situation, the development of a financial plan and implementation of the recommendations. Some firms take the initial fee only if the advice is to transfer to a new provider which is known as ‘contingent charging’. I’ll

Always in your best interest Independent Financial Advice, that puts your best interest at the forefront of every recommendation.

‘Bloodwise’ Coffee Morning – Thursday November 28th ‘Bloodwise’, (formerly ‘Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research’), is an established UK cancer charity that has been beating blood cancers since 1960. The annual Coffee Morning was set up by retired Bourne G.P, Dr Michael McGregor, and his wife Margaret, in memory of their son John who sadly died of leukaemia over thirty years ago. For a university student in the prime of his life, this was a cruel disease to succumb to, and this fund-raising Coffee Morning has been held every year since then. Over £100,000 has been raised, all with the aim of eradicating blood cancers.

Exchange, between 10am and 1pm. There is a £1 entry charge which entitles supporters of this charity to a drink and a mince pie. There will, of course, be the usual wide range of stalls at which you can part with as much cash as possible, and all for a particularly worthwhile cause. (Early Christmas shopping anyone?!)

Sadly, one of the helpers died two years ago of a blood cancer and the Coffee Morning is now in memory of both John and Royden (“Taff”) Roberts.

Did You Know … that in 1960 only two children out of ten would be cured of leukaemia? Today, the figure is eight out of ten … such a staggering improvement! Recent research involves extracting T cells from the body, which are treated in the laboratory and then returned to the body, to fight the cancer. Hopefully, in ten years’ time, we will have eradicated the blood cancers altogether.

The Coffee Morning this year is being held on Thursday November 28th at Bourne Corn

Please make a special effort this year to raise even more than ever – for John and Taff’s sake!

New Running Club in Bourne With rising levels of obesity and a greater awareness of mental health issues, the newly established ‘Natural Bourne Runners’ hopes to provide an environment to suit a wide variety of people who love running or want to take-up the sport! The club has been created by a group of people who love running, and whose aim is to put together enjoyable sessions that help others become better runners… all in a friendly environment. The sessions vary from steady runs in the woods through to training sessions that lead to an end goal, for example a 10km or half marathon. You could be aiming to compete in your first 10km or looking to get a PB. It doesn’t matter … the club will help you achieve your goal. Every session will cater for runners of all abilities. This is not an elitist club, and it doesn’t matter how fast or how slow you are; the sessions will appeal to everyone … they promise that no man or woman will be left behind! In the words of club spokesman, Steve Cole, “We’re a social bunch too… if we run a race, we think it’s important that we all re-hydrate (and celebrate!) with a drink afterwards.” It’s a completely FREE club that is available to all! Natural Bourne Runners currently run every Monday and Wednesday evening, plus longer weekend runs for those training for longer distance events, or for those who just want to push themselves further. There will also be a few “runs with a difference” throughout the year, whilst a night run through the woods is planned for November. They provide regular updates on their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/ groups/2099743900328075/ Potential members can e-mail Steve for further information at: steve.cole180780@gmail.com. (You won’t get left behind, it’s free, and they like a drink afterwards … what’s not to like? Ed.)

More Cohabiting Than Marrying! Over the last decade, statistics show that there has been an increase of 25.8% in the number of cohabiting couple families within the UK, which is a much faster growth than the number of married couples. The number of same-sex couple families has grown by more than 50% since 2015 as well, many of whom will also be unmarried. This is not a new theme but one that bears repeating as there still seems to be so much ignorance out there about the status of cohabitation. Basically, there is no status in the family law context. Yes, there are laws relating to financial orders for children, but they are available to married couples as well. For the cohabiting couple, if you are unmarried or not in a civil partnership, on the breakdown of your relationship you will have no right to share in any capital money unless held in a joint account, or any pension assets, or to receive any maintenance. In respect of property, unless you are a joint owner of your home or any other property or business, it could be very difficult to establish a beneficial right to any equity in such assets. It should also be remembered that, once you are married, the starting point for sharing is 50%, whether or not there is a trust deed which specifies holding the property in unequal shares. So, if you are not going to marry, do consider a cohabitation agreement that can go some way to filling the gaps in your rights for financial provision if your relationship ends. 28

Legal Corner

Face-to-Face Advice is Still Important and Available Today! by Richard Wood

In this “world of technology”, we all like to use the internet and this has its value. However, there are very good reasons why we should still visit and use our local services. From a legal perspective, having face-to-face contact with your legal adviser ensures that all matters are thoroughly discussed, and provides an on-going point of contact for any continuing enquiries. When purchasing property, it is essential that the buyers are able to have particular matters explained to them, as many points need to be covered and things can be misunderstood. Key distinctions have to be made to ensure procedures are carried out correctly, and these can be more effectively clarified in a face-to-face contact, as the following examples show:• Where the buyers are a couple who need to decide if they are happy to hold the property on the basis that they are

“joint tenants” or “tenants-in-common”. Under the former, if one of them dies, the survivor will automatically take the deceased person’s share. This might be what most people think is going to happen; however, in more complicated family arrangements, they may want to hold their property as “tenants-in-common,” which enables them to provide in a will or other deed something different. This could be important in situations where there has been a substantial difference in levels of contributions. • With any transfer of property or land, it is essential that the buyer or seller and their adviser understand what rights and area of land is to be transferred to another, in order to avoid any ambiguity. Any confusion can lead to disputes. In other matters, consulting with your local solicitors has the advantage in that they are familiar with the surrounding community and issues arising within it.

Property News

A Great Year for Newton Fallowell!

(Managing Director, Jason Treadwell looks back over a successful 2019) The last twelve months have seen the Bourne office grow from a “good” sales and lettings agent in town to a “great” one! We’ve become a household name, and increased our service reviews by over 70% at five-star ratings across the sales and lettings teams. The sales placing has seen the office grow from a fifth place standing in town to a clear second place, amongst some tough competition. Our goal for 2020, through hard work and delivering an excellent service, is to get to that number one spot. The team has changed over the year, seeing Nikki our Sales Manager return to the Stamford office with a proportion to the Stamford Sales Manager. Dylan Knowling, who is an energetic property enthusiast, has joined the team as our new valuer. Then there’s Lorna Bright who heads up our lettings team and deals with all elements of the property management. We’ll also have Kieran Arthur join us from the Melton Mowbray office, looking for a new challenge and an opportunity to progress to the Sales Manager’s position, bringing with him a wealth of experience within the Newton Fallowell Group and Estate Agency. The lettings business, with the

assistance of the whole team, has seen us increase our managed portfolio by almost 30%. We’d like to think with our systems and services in place, and the creative work and dedication of our property management team, this has shown a number of landlords how we can be very different from other agents. The introduction of the ‘Tenant Fee Ban’ saw us (and other agents) lose an income stream to their

businesses with this becoming effective from June 1st. Where other agents have increased their fees and added additional charges to their landlords, we have done neither. Working closely with our providers, we have manged to secure a thorough referencing system at only a minimal cost to ourselves and are able to provide a greater level of security to both our tenants and landlords.

Stop Press...

Jason Treadwell reports on a recent function hosted by Newton Fallowell, “Last night’s landlord event brought many new clients to us who were interested to know our thoughts and predictions of the rental market, and how we’ve managed to maintain our costs to landlords at an affordable level. The event saw three new properties sign with us on the night, and a further six are now in the pipeline. We were also able to provide financial advice to a landlord who is now looking to grow their portfolio of properties with an additional ten units. If you’re thinking of changing your managing agent, come and talk to our team of experts today!”

This time of year, we can expect gusty winds and heavy rain to play havoc with our home and garden when it comes to guttering, roof tiles, fences and even trees. Then there’s the frozen pipes and radiators that won’t work after spending the summer months idle, to name a couple of household niggles. The effects of the elements are like magnets to the cowboy traders whose aim is to make even more winter misery, while lining their own pockets. Our advice is to never accept an offer of work from cold callers who ‘happen to be in your area’. They will ask for cash up front and, more often than not, it will be for work which is unnecessary. Don’t be fooled by business cards with websites and telephone numbers which look genuine. Politely take the card and say you will contact them at your convenience, should you need their services. You can then check their contact details or ask a family member of friend to do so on your behalf. So, for all those winter maintenance jobs that still need planning in before the festive season, www. safelocaltrades.com should be your first port of call. We have a range of professional, recommended and reliable trades, from chimney sweeps, boiler maintenance, electricians, roofing specialists, plumbers, tree surgeons – and just about anyone who can provide a service for your seasonal maintenance needs. However, there are some simple but effective ways you take steps to “winter-proof” your home and garden, and avoid a November nightmare or December disaster: • Check all external pipes for breaks, leaks and blockages. Blocked or leaking pipes can freeze during the cold months, then expand and burst – causing potentially expensive water damage. • Think about insulation. A properly insulated property is an absolute must. Make sure that you check the basics, starting with obvious draught points. Invest in some draught-excluder to keep doors and windows secure. Check the cladding around your boiler and pipes, and make sure that taps and faucets don’t leak. • Bleed your radiators. A great way to warm up your property is to bleed the radiators. This releases any trapped air, allowing hot water to fill every part of your radiator and warm the property more efficiently. • Get a boiler service. Arrange for a professional to service your boiler each year. As everyone starts to switch on or boost their central heating, the surge in gas consumption can lead to a big increase in boiler breakdowns. • Clear out your gutters. In autumn, leaves can collect in gutters and drains, leading to blocks and overflows - so it’s best to clean them regularly. Consider investing in gutter leaf guards to help prevent your gutters becoming blocked in future. • Sweep your chimney. If your chimneys are in use, make sure that they get swept every year. Life Insurance - The Devil is in the Detail - by Matthew Biggs - Liberty Partnership Ltd

how small or how irrelevant you may feel it is, as this will enable them to help you in the best way possible. Both your adviser and the insurer want you to have a pleasant experience with what is bound to be an unpleasant time, should you ever need to claim on a life insurance policy, so being upfront and honest with the insurer will allow this to happen and, in turn, it will mean that they are going to pay out quicker!

A recent study has shown that two in every three adults in the UK do not have any life insurance! For the lucky people who own their homes without a mortgage the lack of life insurance shouldn’t cause them much of a headache, but if you, like most homeowners, have a mortgage, then life insurance should be at the top of your priority list. Life insurance is a tricky subject because when you need it, unfortunately, you will no longer be with us. But the purpose of life insurance isn’t to look after you; it is to make sure the people you care about most are looked after once you have passed away and that, should the worst happen to you, then being able to help your partner by clearing the mortgage

can help take a lot of stress away from them during, what will be, a difficult time in their life. It is at this point that I can’t stress enough, how important it is that, when you are considering life insurance, you tell your adviser about every little detail, no matter

Peregrine Lands in Dyke – New Lease of Life for Mill Lincolnshire’s sole surviving smock mill, which stands next door to the Wishing Well Inn in Dyke, has received a new, and very welcome, lease of life. Richard Winkworth has incorporated the fabulous old structure into “Peregrine”, his picture-framing business, established recently in the village. Over three hundred years old and originally located in Deeping Fen, the former corn mill was re-located to Dyke in 1845 and was fully operational until being dismantled in 1926. The structure has since been through some good times and bad but, with Peregrine having ‘landed’, its future is assured and Richard’s business is set to ‘take off’! Over thirty years in the picture-framing industry has enabled Richard to collect a vast knowledge of innovative ways of framing. He has framed many different products and sold art works of the exotic and unusual. The last seven years have been spent at Waterside Garden Centre, but now Richard has decided to re-locate the art and framing business to his Dyke workshop. There is a new sales office where customers can see a vast range of over seventy frames and over fifty mountboard colours, which surround and enhance people’s art works.

He uses the best in acid-free mountboards as well as “forestcertified” moulding for the frames. The mill houses, on two floors, all the specialised machinery used in today’s modern framing techniques. The almost limitless list of articles, around which Richard can attach a frame, includes watercolours, oils, tapestries, cross-stitch, embroideries, photographs, medals, football shirts, moulds of children’s feet and poppies from The Tower of London!

This tender, heart-warming drama is the extraordinary true story of Helene Hanff, a vivacious New York writer and collector of rare books, and Frank Doel, a London bookseller. Through their letters and passion for books, they share a remarkable transatlantic romance spanning twenty years; their friendship blossoms through their funny and often intimate correspondence. Their exchange of letters not only became a chronicle of an era, from the late 1940s post-war Britain to the Beatles ‘invasion’ in the 1960s, but also the record of a unique love story. Their deeply touching relationship was captured in the highly successful film adaptation, starring Anne Bancroft and Anthony Hopkins.

sale at The Ginger Fox Café, Abbey Road, Bourne, from Wednesday October 9th, (cash or cheque only). Doors open at 7pm and the performance begins at 7.30pm. There will be a bar provided by the venue before the performance and during the interval.

Tickets are priced at £10 each, (£8 Senior Citizens, Wednesday and Thursday only), and will be on

Hypertension is known as “the silent killer”, So, what is being measured, and why? Persistent hypertension also affects organs, putting too much stress on them, causing damage and disease. For cats, chronic renal failure and an overactive thyroid gland are the two main causes of hypertension. It can be a complicated picture, as many cats with hyperthyroidism also have some underlying kidney damage. Old age

Data correct at 03/2019. Figures quoted are for a range of configurations and are subject to change due to ongoing approvals/changes. Please consult your retailer for further information. Official fuel consumption figures for the Polo model range in mpg (litres/100km): Combined 44.8 (6.3) – 57.6 (4.9). Combined CO2 emissions 97 – 110 g/km.
