Introduction

Welcome to Your February Issue. A very warm welcome (unlike the weather!) to our February issue. It’s at times like this that it really hits me just how quickly time is flying – was it really four years ago that we were reminding our ladies that this is a “Leap Year” and yes, you can traditionally, this year on February 29th, get down on one knee and propose to your loved one? (Get ready fellas!!!) What’s more, this month we’ve got Valentine’s Day on February 14th where we can all stoke those romantic fires, so let’s ignore all the rain and gales out there and cosy up inside and enjoy this month’s collection of features, advertisements and ideas brought together for you by our wonderful team.

Claire x

So, farewell “Dry January”, and that alcohol de-tox wasn’t too bad after all, was it? I personally steered clear of “Vegan-uary” but it’s remarkable just how popular the rise in veganism has become, with so many students, several of them acquaintances of two of our own vegan sons, making the change to a healthier lifestyle, (and then having more money for the more important items in a student’s life, some of which involve bottles and glasses!) Valentine’s Day is featured in this month’s issue at some length, with all sorts of opportunities to make amorous advances, whether that involves a romantic candle-lit meal in one of our numerous eating venues in the local area or some beautiful flowers from our superb, independent florists. And talking of love … I’m overjoyed to announce the arrival of Nancy Rose, our first grandchild, on January 16th – let the spoiling begin! By the way, Why do Norwegian and Swedish naval vessels all have a bar code on their sides? It’s there to “scan de navy in!” Why is it so difficult to teach a dog to dance? They’ve got two left feet. Enjoy the read.

“Are You Sweet Enough?” asks Claire Gray, owner of Renu

I

f you could feel more energised, sleep better and love yourself a little more would that be more important than losing an inch on your waist or a few pounds from the scales? So often, we set our fitness goals on size and weight when what we are really striving for is simply feeling great. Modern society has left us associating this with size, and whilst I am a complete advocate of all the health benefits of correct posture, a balanced diet and regular exercise, these can all be achieved without the added stress of what size label is in your jeans. In fact, when you find the balance of eating well, taking enough rest, exercising sensibly and standing tall, the rest often follows naturally. There are so many reasons you may not be achieving your goals; these can be hormonal, dietary, posture and exercise-related. We need to listen to our bodies, be detectives about their individual needs, and make adjustments accordingly. One of the main culprits is sugar. It directly affects your moods, cravings,

weight control, sleep patterns and energy levels. We are able to get more than enough natural sugars through a balanced diet; in fact, we do not need any refined sugars at all. So, before you pop the next chocolate or biscuit in, or you pour a large glass of wine, here is some information on why you are sweet enough.

chemicals in that have an adverse effect on your health. Filling up on high protein, low fat foods such as fish, chicken and pulses with lots of colourful vegetables will help to stabilise your cravings and manage your energy levels and sleep patterns. Don’t forget to drink plenty of water every day too!

Sugar is one of the most ageing substances you can consume, causing glycation where sugar and protein molecules combine to form a tangled mess of tissue, leading to premature ageing of the skin. With sixteen calories in every teaspoon, it is directly related to weight gain, diabetes, heart disease and chronic fatigue and, if you are menopausal, it is a disaster area when it comes to hot flushes.

The meaning of renew is “to return to former self” and our objective is to help you find that centre, whether it is from an exercise class, a gym session, a treatment or our member education. February is “Valentine’s month” and is associated with thinking of those you love. Here at Renu, we truly believe you are sweet enough just the way you are. Our salon and fitness centre is a place where you can relax the mind, tone your body and lift your spirits, and our philosophy is to help you feel more energised and healthy. It really doesn’t matter if that is through a treatment or a workout. You choose.

Of course, sugar is also addictive, so you need to train your palate to accept less sugary foods and look for the hidden sugars in things such as drinks (including wine) and pre-packaged foods. Try to avoid replacing sugar with artificial sweeteners. Although they are low in calories, they have

Phobias and Fears Set yourself FREE today

There are many phobias that we can suffer from, the most common being fear of spiders, needles, heights, public spaces, public speaking and flying. The intense fear we feel means we spend a lot of time avoiding certain things or situations, and our world becomes smaller and smaller as we stop enjoying doing some of the things we used to do. A phobia is defined as a persistent fear of an object or situation in which the sufferer is compelled to go to great lengths to avoid certain situations. The fear is typically disproportional to the actual danger posed, often being recognized as irrational. There are, in the main, two types of phobias. There is the simple phobia where a person reacts negatively when they come into contact with the thing that causes fear, i.e. dentists, needles, flying or spiders. Then there is the complex phobia which causes fear and anxiety continually. “Fear can make a bee seem like an elephant.” One example is emetophobia - a fear of being sick, and considered to be one of the most common phobias in the world. It can affect the sufferer in ways such as not wanting to collect their children from school in case that child is feeling ill, or maybe even putting off becoming pregnant because of the fear of sickness or even not having medical treatments.

“Too many of us are not living our dreams because we are living our fears.” Another complex phobia is social phobia, a fear of social situations, such as weddings, public speaking or simply going out to dinner with people - even if they’re friends! Frequently, people with a social phobia have a fear of embarrassing themselves or of being humiliated in public. The human mind is an amazing thing, undoubtedly the most powerful and resourceful problem-solving device in the known universe. However, our minds have developed as part of an evolutionary process, and our mind contains powerful tools for learning and dealing with danger. In our modern lives where these ‘fight, flight or freeze’ responses are generally less useful, strong behavioural responses or fears can nevertheless be set up. It is usually when we are stressed or anxious these primitive parts of the brain can sometimes overreact and set up patterns of fear or thought that you find difficult or impossible to control. The good news is that Solution Focused Hypnotherapy helps with all these different types of phobias allowing you to feel free to live a normal life again. Ready for a New Way to Travel? How About Shaws of Maxey? Would you like to try something new in 2020 - and maybe visit some new destinations? Perhaps it’s time to consider travelling by coach! When was the last time that you stepped on board? Gone are the days of a bumpy ride to the same old destinations and a singalong on the way home. Today’s passengers expect luxury and that’s what they get. Modern coaches cost around £250,000 and, once you step on board, you’ll soon see why. On these touring coaches, you’ll find more legroom than on most planes or trains, a well-stocked refreshment station, a toilet for your convenience, reclining seats, air suspension … the list goes on. And we’ve not even mentioned the scenic views from the panoramic windows! With almost one hundred years of experience behind us, you can rest assured that we know the best routes to get you to your destination, as quickly and as safely as possible, and where to find the most spectacular scenery along the way.

“Everything was so well organised and put together.”

But where will you go? Well don’t worry, we’ve got some great suggestions. How many of the UK’s beautiful islands have you visited? With stunning coastlines and lots of wildlife, you don’t have to travel far to experience the tranquillity of island life. Take the Scilly Isles, described as “jewels of white sand in a crystal sea” or the Isle of Arran, described as “Scotland in Miniature”, thanks to its ever-changing coastline and dramatic mountain peaks. You’ll feel like you’re a million miles away and yet, travelling there by coach has been a breeze! Closer to home, and from as little as £10pp, you can spend the day in Nottingham; have you ever explored

“You have seen and heard the advertising, but what exactly is the 1:1 Diet? asks Pam Rust 1:1 is designed to fit in with your busy lifestyle with minimum fuss and maximum results. There are various steps you can follow depending on whether you wish to keep away from conventional food and use 1:1 products for a short time or mix and match products and caloriecontrolled meals. I followed the diet thirteen years ago and lost five and a half stone in as many months and then gradually introduced meals back into my diet. In recent years some of the weight returned as I have had thyroid issues. After going back on the 1:1 Diet I decided to become a consultant. One amazing client has achieved a six stone loss in six months and is continuing on the journey. I set up a thirtyday challenge on November 24th 2019 and three clients took the challenge to see how much weight they could lose before Christmas. The thirty-day weigh-in results were amazing! Three stone twelve pounds in thirty days, at one

of the most difficult times of the year with parties and extra socialising. Another challenge was set for January and they are all super determined to beat the December figure. There will be another thirty-day challenge shortly, so why not join in and see where you can be by the end of March? Mobile, daytime, evening and weekend consultations are available. “Sorry I am on a Caribbean cruise.” (No need to be sorry, Brenda. It’s we who are shivering back here who are the sorry ones! – Ed.) “We had a busy December and were so pleased on Christmas Day to visit the Don’t Lose Hope Cafe, The Cedars, Westminster House, Digby Court and then The Willows in Rippingale. We took chocolates and biscuits for staff and residents. It is a highlight of Christmas for me to be able to thank the people who are so dedicated and who work on Christmas Day to look after others. We attended the Methodist Church and I was honoured to do one of the readings. We then attended the Salvation Army Carol Service at the Corn Exchange, which was very well attended, despite them asking for a £5 donation, so they could help struggling families in the town. I understand they provided gifts and Christmas food for about twenty families and I was pleased to be able to donate to this cause. We are at present taking a much-needed holiday, cruising in the Caribbean. We need this break to prepare for the next couple of months! We have a Valentine’s Ball at Toft House Hotel on February 14th. Then, in March I am having a ‘Mayor’s Birthday Bash’ in the Corn Exchange with a Freddie Mercury and Brian May tribute act, with a fish and chip supper. Tickets are on sale now for the Valentine’s Ball, at £22 per head for a three-course meal and dancing until late. There will also be a raffle. Tickets for March will be obtainable from the Town Council offices or by contacting me. Finally, we hope you are all well. Regards Brenda Johnson, sent from Dominica.”

Free Money Course Available in Bourne Christmas can be a very expensive time and, as the dust settles, the reality of what has been spent can start to sink in. Help is at hand in the form of a FREE personal finance course run by a local church, in conjunction with an awardwinning charity. The CAP Money course was devised in 2008 by the charity, Christians Against Poverty (CAP) and has currently helped over ten thousand people to manage their money by providing the tools to help them to budget, save and prevent debt. As we grow up, many of us will have been taught to swim, ride a bike or even learn to drive a car; however, the same cannot be said for dealing with money. The vast majority of people will have entered adult life having had no guidance on how to look after their money. It is no wonder then that personal debt is increasing. People in the UK owed £1,661 billion at the end of September 2019. This is up from £1,612 billion at the end of September 2018, an extra £930 per UK adult over the year . Once debt has been accrued, the hardest thing can be knowing where to start. The CAP Money course will teach you how to build a balanced budget with a money system which will encourage good spending habits and saving for the future. The CAP Money course is held over three sessions over a three-week period with each session being around two hours. The course

is led by a group of trained money coaches and you will be provided with course material for you to use, as well as refreshments, and all completely free of charge. Common questions about the CAP Money Course Is the CAP Money Course for me? - Whether you feel pretty organised or whether it’s a lucky dip every time you try to withdraw cash from your account, the CAP Money Course will help you to take complete control of your finances. Do I have to tell the course leaders / people on the course about my money situation? - No, you do not have to share any of your finances with anyone on the course (unless of course YOU want to). Do I have to go to church or be a Christian to attend the course? - Absolutely not; all the services are given freely regardless of age, gender, faith or background. As we start a New Year, you might be wondering how to cope with the expense of Christmas or maybe you are thinking that now is the time for you to look for new ways to manage your money. We would love to help you to get to grips with your finances and welcome you onto our next course. If you are interested in signing up to our next course or want to know more, please e-mail us at capmoney@bournebaptistchurch.org.

MEN UNITED IN SONG 2020: SUPPORTING PROSTATE CANCER UK Looking for a fresh challenge, new skills and a great social scene to boot? Then look no further… Following its phenomenal success over the last few years, Men United in Song is back for 2020, once again raising money for Prostate Cancer UK. Launching in February, the project will sign up forty local men with a range of previous singing experience (including none), to rehearse over ten weeks for a charity concert at the Cresset Theatre on Saturday May 9th. To date, the project has engaged hundreds of local men, raising many thousands of pounds for the charity. “The whole experience was extremely rewarding and exciting,” says Stuart from Bourne. “You get to see what your voice is really capable of and to share a few pints with a great bunch of guys from all walks of life, who you might not normally meet. The sense of achievement when you finally get to perform in front of an audience in the concert is amazing. I couldn’t recommend it highly enough.” “While I’d sung karaoke before, I knew that this would be very different!” says James from Market Deeping. “I learned so much in just a few weeks and made some really great friendships too. A fantastic experience, thoroughly recommended!” Patrick, from Peterborough, says, “Doing something good for a fantastic charity while also learning to sing some really great pieces of

Thanks from Toolbar Every Christmas the volunteers at Toolbar, the local charity that supports unemployed people, like to offer their ‘guests’ bags of basic food items to help tide them over the festive period, - which can be very un-festive if you are out of work! They want to thank local supermarkets Lidl, Coop at Elsea Park, and Sainsbury’s for helping out again to the tune of a total of more than £60, which went a long way towards providing much appreciated Christmas fare. f e brua ry 2020

music was a brilliant experience! Don’t hesitate, sign up today!” Men United in Song is not all about the singing or even just about the fundraising; there’s a fantastic social scene too! Ultimately, it’s about a group of men getting together in a shared enterprise, which of course is the idea behind Prostate Cancer UK’s Men United campaign. Men United in Song kicks off with introduction sessions on February 27th (6pm – 10pm) and 29th (2pm – 6pm) at the John Mansfield Campus in Peterborough, (PE14HX). Absolutely no previous experience is required to join, just a willingness to get involved and give it your best shot! A Sparkling Time: St. Pancras by Searcys

“L

et’s meet at the Champagne Bar, St. Pancras”, no doubt says a certain ‘something’. The magnificent London St. Pancras International is where Eurostar trains arrive and depart, plus services to/from elsewhere, including the Midlands and South East England. Thameslink services and underground trains are fast and frequent too, and the shops at St Pancras International have high street names and designer outlets. Searcys Champagne Bar with its heated leather seating and ‘press for champagne’ buttons, has 98 metres of serving space and is reputed to be Europe’s longest. Their adjacent Brasserie is very popular, both with people travelling and also as a ‘destination’ dining venue. High-quality wines, from the extensive drinks menu, pair extremely well with the different dishes of cuisine. Regular events happen throughout the year. In addition to the Champagne School, other events can feature ‘Around the World in a Bubble’, plus specific vineyard tastings, to include a full three course dinner and, of course, ‘St Pancras by Searcys Champers And Chips’ is always very popular! Searcys is renowned for their grand, impressive range of different Champagnes. From well-known brands to lesser, small independent labels, Searcys Champagne choices have something for all tastes and palates. Very knowledgeable, expert sommeliers conduct Champagne Masterclasses. These memorable events are inspiring and hugely

popular with ‘sparkling’ lovers, from ‘learners’ to ‘connoisseurs’. Whether Blanc de Noirs, Single Year Champagnes or other sparkling delectations are preferred, there is always something to learn about these wonderful productions. From breakfast, through luncheon and travelinspired afternoon tea, to dinner, plus pre-theatre and ‘express’ dining (if time is pressing), St Pancras by Searcys Brasserie and Champagne Bar also offers private dining. Parties and occasions can easily be arranged and accommodated. Gift vouchers are available – now there’s a thought! A very much recommended brasserie and Champagne bar, set within a most impressive, iconic venue. Yet another one of Bourne’s long-established shops has been forced to face up to the fierce economic challenges on our high streets and has decided to close. Jessie Bellamy Men’s and Ladies Clothing was established on North Street in 1937 and had recently closed the menswear section. Now, owners Richard and Judith Simpson and Caroline Creasey have made the decision to close the entire operation down as they retire. In their notice to their valued customers, they explain, “Age and trading conditions have conspired against us and it is with deep regret that we have to advise you that we are to close. We have been privileged to have served so many customers here in the middle of Bourne for over eighty years and would like to take this opportunity to thank all our valued customers for their loyal support over the many years.” A huge closing down sale opened to the public on Wednesday January 22nd and is now in place.

Competition Winners Congratulations go to Isobel, Louie and Oliver Thompson, three teenagers from Arnhem Way in Bourne, who were the lucky winners of our Christmas Novelty Hunt which ran in the December issue of “Discovering Bourne”. By correctly matching the festive novelties on the page with those placed in participating shop windows around town, they scooped the £50 prize. What’s more, the extra £50, donated by this magazine, will be on its way to Bourne’s “Little Miracles” Charity to help them with their wonderful work. As ever, many thanks go to the participating shops and businesses who enable this popular challenge to take place – “I suppose it helps keep the kids on the streets”, commented one local recently!

Gorka’s flair for dancing started from a very young age. Originally from Bilbao, Spain, he attended Ballroom and Latin dance classes from the age of eleven. Gorka has continuously displayed outstanding talent and charisma in the 2016, 2017 and 2018 series. His debut saw him paired with EastEnders star, Tameka Empson. In 2018 he was partnered with TV star, Katie Piper, after having waltzed Alexandra Burke to the final the previous year, and 2019 saw him partner real-life partner Gemma Atkinson on the Christmas Day special. Tickets are available from firedancelive.co.uk but here at Discovering Magazines, we are giving away a pair of tickets for your choice of either the Peterborough or Cambridge show! All you need to do to enter is answer this question: Who is the real life partner of Gorka Marquez? PROTECTION WHEN IT MATTERS MOST If you want peace of mind that you and your family would cope financially following a death or serious illness then now is the time to consider life and critical illness insurance. The insurance industry paid out a record £5.3 billion in protection claims in 2018* — a £200 million increase year on year. This equates to £14.5 million paid every day. We’ve partnered with AIG who paid out over £92 million in life and critical illness claims in 2018, helping over 1500 individuals and families through some of the most traumatic times in their lives. So customers can rest assured they will have the financial support when they need it most. SUE AND MARTIN’S STORY When Sue Ansell became critically ill, it was a tough time for the whole family. Husband Martin, pensions expert at NFU Mutual, explains why having protection cover was vital. “Around 25 years ago, Sue and I were moving to another house, so we increased our mortgage to £72,000. “We were asked if we would like to protect ourselves, not just in the event of dying, but also in the event of a critical illness. We thought it unlikely that both of us would ever have a critical illness at the same time so we decided to do half, £36,000 as this would cover half of the mortgage should anything happen. “Sometime later, Sue began to feel unwell. She would lose the ability to speak or understand people — just for a minute or two. We had it investigated, and the hospital told us it was a tumour in the brain, and it would kill her unless we allowed the doctors to operate. At the time, you’re facing the uncertainty

of the tumour, the operation, the children — the last thing you want, on top of all that, is to have financial worry. “Luckily, the critical illness cover did exactly what it said on the tin. It gave us a lump sum that allowed us to rely on one income rather than the two. “The pressure of the mortgage was eased and it took away such a great part of the worries we faced. “Thankfully Sue has made a recovery. She is able to live her life and do the things that really matter, like seeing her kids grow up. “You can’t insure against emotional problems but you can insure against financial ones. Do what you can afford and review it regularly.” YOU NEED TO KNOW Critical illness cover provides protection for illnesses and conditions specified in the policy. Bourne to Line Dance

- Having Fun and Raising Money for Charity As it enters its twenty-first year in existence, Donna Andrew, Group Leader of charity fund-raising club, “Bourne to Line Dance”, here explains what it’s all about! “I run three classes a week, two in Bourne and one in Stamford,” Donna writes. “Monday morning at the Masonic Centre Hall, 1-2 Roman Bank, Bourne, (10:00 - 11:00) is our ‘Beginners’ class. Here we do the easy dances, it’s a popular, fun class and everyone goes home with a smile on their face. Tuesday evenings at Stamford Rugby Club, Hambleton Rd, Stamford, (19:30 - 21:00) is our ‘Intermediate’ class, where we do the more advanced dances, and this class is for people who enjoy a challenge! Thursday mornings, we are at the Abbey Church Hall, Abbey Road, Bourne, (10:00 - 12:00) and this class is for ‘Improver’ dances, and is also suitable for progressing beginners. On the first Saturday of EVERY month, we hold a Country Music Line Dance Evening at The Masonic Centre Hall. Here we have a top-quality Country Music artist or group to

perform, and these evenings are suitable for anyone who enjoys Country Music, either as a dancer or as a listener. Everyone is welcome and details of these events are published in the “Discovering Bourne” What’s on section. For further information, please contact Donna on 07718972329 or e-mail DCALiner@aol.com. As a club, we have always raised money for charity, having donated to Thorpe Hall and the Macmillan Trust in the past. More recently, whilst changing venues, we discovered a more local charity, The Little Miracles. We could soon see how hard they are working and how dedicated the helpers and parents are, to help the children involved. This made it clear just how desperately they need all the financial help they can get to make life easier. So far, we have raised over £550 for Little Miracles, and I hope more local clubs will consider this very worthy charity and support their fundraising days in the future.” For details of Little Miracles Bourne Branch, please contact 07984 020640 or visit www.littlemiraclescharity.org.uk.

The UK economy remained static in the three months to October. Economic growth in the final quarter is anticipated to be just 0.1%, with annual growth of 1.3%. The stock markets rose on the results of the election, it remains to be seen whether this continues over the longer term.

Transactions It is estimated that 102,050 sales took place in November, according to the HMRC, 1.9% higher than a year ago. This would mark the first positive year-onyear increase since 2017. However in recent months sales volumes have been revised downwards in subsequent data revisions. So far in 2020 we have seen the average percentage agreed based on asking price has hit 95%. We have seen an up turn in confidence and a lot more buyers registering and viewing, most importantly of course making offers, in particular first and second time buyers are dominating the market.

“LOVE - Great Short Stories by Women”

“The Other Bennet Sister” by Janice Hadlow

chosen by Victoria Hislop

For fans of Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice”, Janice Hadlow’s “The Other Bennet Sister” tells Mary’s story... It is a sad fact of life that if a young woman is unlucky enough to come into the world without expectations, she had better do all she can to ensure she is born beautiful. To be handsome and poor is misfortune enough; but to be both plain and penniless is a hard fate indeed.

‘Love is, of course, a central pre-occupation of literature...’ Victoria Hislop, bestselling author and champion of the short story, has chosen her favourite short stories by women writers. Here are prize-winners, famous wits, well-known feminists, national treasures and rising stars. Love is represented in this volume in all its guises - romantic, maternal, happy and haunting.

CONTRIBUTORS: Katherine Mansfield, Dorothy Parker, Doris Lessing, Margaret Drabble, Angela Carter, Margaret Atwood, Ellen Gilchrist, Alice Walker, Mavis Gallant, Carol Shields, Anne Enright, Elspeth Davie, Alison Lurie, Jennifer Egan, Jeanette Winterson, Claire Boylan, Maggie Gee, Colette Paul, Rachel Seiffert, Yiyun Li, Nadine Gordimer, Miranda July, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Carys Davies, Alison MacLeod, Emma Donoghue, Roshi Fernando, M. J. Hyland and Avril Joy.

One by one, her sisters marry - Jane and Lizzy for love; Lydia for some semblance of respectability - but Mary, it seems, is destined to remain single and live out her life at Longbourn, at least until her father dies and the house is bequeathed to the reviled Mr Collins. But when that fateful day finally comes, she slowly discovers that perhaps there is hope for her, after all. Simultaneously a wonderfully warm homage to Jane Austen and a delightful new story, in its own right, “The Other Bennet Sister” is a life-affirming tale of a young woman finding her place in the world.

“Guess How Much I Love You” by Sam McBratney, illustrated by Anita Jeram A beautiful, limited edition of “Guess How Much I Love You” to celebrate twenty-five years of being a heart-warming children’s classic. Sometimes, when you love someone very, very much, you want to find a way of describing just how much you treasure them. But, as Little Nutbrown Hare and Big Nutbrown Hare discover, love is not always an easy thing to measure! Since its publication in 1994, children and parents worldwide have cherished the beautifully written tale of Little Nutbrown and Big Nutbrown Hare so much that it has become one of the most enduring bedtime classics of our time.

Don’t Let Online Romancers Steal Your Heart - or Your Money! by Eileen Le Voi at Safe Local Trades WITH the most romantic day of the year just around the corner, Valentine’s Day is not just for those people who are already ‘coupled up’. An estimated seven million UK residents are registered on dating sites, and around one in three relationships in the UK now start online. However, while for many it may be romance and roses; for an increasing number of others it can spiral into heartbreak and financial misery. Romance fraud affects thousands of people; with women making up the majority of victims. According to Action Fraud, scammers swindled victims out of an average of £11,145 each during 2018. There are many local stories including one woman who lost everything, including her home (read the full story at the link below*). Fraudsters trick victims into sending money or gather enough personal information to steal their identities; resulting in an overall cost to victims of £50 million. The majority of accounts on dating websites are genuine people looking for romance, but fraudsters may try to contact you by making fake profiles, getting in touch and building what feels like a loving relationship. Once a fraudster using a fake dating profile is confident that they’ve won your trust, they will tell you about a problem they’re experiencing and ask you to help out by sending money. They may have arranged to visit you, but need money to pay for the flight or visa. They may tell you everything has been booked but their ticket has been stolen, and you need to send money quickly to get them on the next flight. Alternatively, they may prey on your sympathies, telling you a family member or someone else they are responsible for is ill and they need money for medical treatment. Once you send them money, the fraudsters will keep coming back and invent new reasons to send them more. There are a few simple steps to keep yourself, and your loved ones, safe from fraudsters who often target the vulnerable, the lonely or recently widowed or divorced. D - Don’t rush into an online relationship. Get to know the person, not the profile, ensuring you ask plenty of questions. A - Analyse their profile. Protect yourself by confirming their identity. Check the person is genuine by putting the following into your search engine: their name, profile picture (by simply using a reverse image search) and any repeatedly used phrases, along with the term ‘dating scam’. T - Talk to your friends and family. Be wary of anyone who tells you not to tell others about them. E - Evade scams. Never send money or share your bank details with someone you’ve only met online. S - Stay on the dating site messenger service. Fraudsters will often encourage their victims to use different communications channels that are often undetectable. * Read Carol’s story at https://cambridgeshireinsight.org. uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Carols-story.pdf fe br u a r y 2 0 2 0

Looking For a New Home to Fall in Love With? by Jason Treadwell, Managing Director

“Love at first sight” is a commonly used cliché; however, one we feel is very appropriate when purchasing a new home. In today’s world of modern technology, it is easy to pass judgement on a home prior to even viewing, with photos and floorplans easily accessible. However, it is often within the first few seconds of stepping foot across the threshold, where the house feels like a home, that the decision to purchase is made. Marketing details are still extremely important, as many buyers will arrange to view properties based on the photos and detail provided. Although it is fair to say, until viewing a home, you simply cannot know whether the home is truly right for you.

It is our job to find our potential purchasers a new home to fall in love with. Knowing each individual client’s requirements is key to doing so, in order to find the right home. Whether they need to be situated within proximity of a certain school, or have space in the garden for a trampoline, it is these minor details that assist us in finding them the perfect home. As regards putting properties to the market, we have an understanding towards whether it will be right for each potential purchaser. This allows us to call potential buyers about homes as soon as they come to the market, as well as before, enabling us to sell properties quickly and often prior to marketing – an attractive service to be able to offer! If you have fallen out of love with your home, there surely is no better time to act? Allowing time for the sale to proceed to completion, marketing your home now could allow for a spring move, ensuring you are in your new home in time for the summer! This is often a prime time for home movers, with school holidays and trips abroad often getting in the way during the summer months. This could explain the buoyant start to the new year that the Bourne property market has seen, where we have launched many new properties to the market, with many of these having already sold! However, we still have many new buyers looking and we are keen to find their perfect match. We would love the opportunity to see if we can match your home to its next owner, therefore please get in touch with us on 01778 422567 if you are considering a move.

CARING FOR OUR LOVED ONES ON VALENTINE’S DAY Words from Richard Wood

With the new legal year upon us, we might be thinking of a new or updated will or a Lasting Power of Attorney. Perhaps there is a house move on the agenda? Although, as local solicitors, we can help you with those issues and many more (as it is often described in the vernacular) how does this relate to the most “Romantic Day in the Calendar”?

can be important. If you come to us direct, you do not have to pay a Referral Fee that may be incurred in other situations. You can choose us as your own solicitor and can see us locally.

Everyone should want their romance to last. So, taking care of each other is paramount. At Double and Megson, the long-term care for all our clients, whether married or living together, or if residing on their own, has to be at the forefront of all of our minds and at all times.

Taking care in having an up-to-date will can really matter in ensuring our loved ones are cared for after we die. During our lifetimes, Lasting Power of Attorney can particularly help many people.

Setting up home, whether on your own or in a couple (later perhaps with a family), requires experienced face-to-face legal advice. Working out how you should hold the property and if you need extra protection

Ultimately, there is nothing more romantic than the care we all have for our loved ones.

So, although we all enjoy a romantic meal and flowers (and most likely chocolates too!) it is of fleeting enjoyment, compared to long-term security, sadly. We would otherwise all wish for Christmas or Valentine’s every day. Let us enjoy building futures.

“Chat over a cuppa” - with Brett Sinclair (words by John Schwarz, Editor)

As every one of our “Discovering” team is partial to both a relaxing cup of tea (or its alcoholic equivalent!) and also an opportunity to “sit and gas” with anyone caring to sit long enough and listen, it seemed a perfect way to, not only quench one’s thirst, but also to be able to shed some light on the lives of some of the people in our area who play significant roles in the lives of many of us – so welcome to “A Chat over a Cuppa”! It was with much interest for me, (with a life-long love of football and a working lifetime spent in the classroom) to be able to spend time with our first “victim”, Mr Brett Sinclair, whose passions also appear to be football and schooling. As Executive Deputy Headteacher (Behavioural Standards) for four years, Brett has been an integral part of the organisation known as the “South Lincolnshire Academies Trust”, a body responsible for the education and welfare of over 2,500 students within Bourne Academy and Spalding Academy. Raised in Peterborough and proud to have been an alumnus of the, now defunct (and, in fact, demolished), Bretton Woods Secondary School, Brett trained at Bedford College of Physical Education. After years of competitive schoolboy football, including spells at Norwich City and Peterborough United, this skilful defender was to spend many years in this area as a non-league player with the likes of Deeping Rangers, Spalding United and, of course, Bourne Town. Brett assures me that he remains Bourne Town F.C.’s youngestever captain at eighteen years of age! Realising that the future wouldn’t actually see him as captain of his beloved Everton F.C. after all, Brett applied for teaching posts, one of which happened to be at the Robert Manning School, (as Bourne Academy was then known). Eighteen years on, and the enthusiastic young teacher of 58

Bourne

P.E. has now risen to his exalted current role … and is loving it! The wonderful warm welcome felt on that day of his interview remains clear in Brett’s memory. Understandably very proud of the ways in which the achievements and profile of Bourne Academy have improved in recent years, he concludes, “The people of Bourne and district are so lucky now to have two well-established education systems, one here and the other at the Grammar School, where all abilities can be catered for”, adding that, at present, Bourne Academy is massively over-subscribed, such is its growing reputation. Recently re-married, Brett lives in Deeping which enables an easy commute to both Bourne and Spalding, besides having not-too-distant access to his children, Isobel (16) and Noah (14). Brett reminisces fondly of a grandfather who played for Everton ‘B’ team, and extraordinarily generous parents who not only encouraged him to kick a ball around the house to occupy himself from an early age, but who also supported his dream to become a professional footballer with miles spent travelling, both here and abroad. An hour in Brett’s charming company soon passed and many anecdotes were shared. I’m almost certain I heard him say it had been the best hour he’d spent all week, (but that I wasn’t to let Mrs Conley know that!) fe br u a r y 2 0 2 0

• Addictions and habits - regain control. • Exam and driving test nerves. • Anxiety, confidence, panic attacks, self-esteem.

• Hypno chemo. • Pain relief. • Sports hypnosis. These are just a few of the areas where hypnotherapy can help. If your particular issue is not listed, then please contact Tim Pinning, to see how hypnotherapy can help you.
