Introduction
Welcome to Your March Issue. A warm welcome to you all. Mother’s Day already - it’s on March 22nd by the way! “Life doesn’t come with a manual - it comes with a mother” is an old saying which springs to mind. We all need help in finding our way through all the various ups and downs of life, and there, right from day one has been that wonderful (sometimes), smiling (often) and loving (always) lady we are proud to call “Mum”. This month, we include several “mum-related features” and also look towards Easter, fast approaching early next month. Let’s hope by then we’ll have turned the corner weather-wise, dried ourselves out and started thinking of those long, warm summer days to come. Finally, from all of us mums, thanks in advance for the flowers, chocolates, perfume and big hugs, as we try our hardest … without a manual!
Claire x
Mother’s Day is always a wonderful opportunity to take the time out to thank your mother, (and don’t forget the mother-in-law either!) for giving you so much, right from the very beginning. This month’s issue contains many ideas to make that thank you even more special than ever, as our mums are placed centre-stage on March 22nd. That extra evening light, when the clocks go forward an hour on March 29th, will make us all feel that summer’s not too far away either. It’s always good to hear from our readers and thank you for the feedback. I’d like to put out a request for any ideas which you feel might improve the magazine even further. Please e-mail me any suggestions because, don’t forget, it’s your magazine. Budding photographers, in particular, might fancy sending us images to adorn our front covers in the months to come. And finally … •........................I admit I was wrong about how good my chiropractor actually is. I stand corrected. •........................Or, as the scientist said when a lump of gold jumped onto his Periodic Table: “Au, get off my table!” Enjoy the read!

Participation In Ve Day 75 As with many other organisations in the country, the Town Council is preparing to celebrate the 75th anniversary of VE Day over the weekend of the 8th-10th May 2020. We have pleasure in outlining plans for VE Day 75, being organised to celebrate and commemorate this anniversary. May 8th,1945 was the day when peace emerged after nearly six years of war, so the 75th anniversary on May 8th 2020 represents an important milestone in our country’s history. I am sure you will agree that we cannot let this day pass without reflecting on the enormous sacrifice, courage and determination of people from all walks of life who saw us through this dark period. Our celebration, VE Day 75, will cover the weekend of 8th - 10th May 2020, and will be an international celebration of peace – a time to remember, reflect and pay tribute to the millions who played such a vital part in achieving it. As you will see, we are hoping that the town will come out in force to celebrate this poignant weekend. To this end, there is a part for all to play and the restaurants, pubs and cafes can join in by raising a glass to the nation’s heroes, not only at 3.00pm on Friday May 8th (the time in 1945 when Churchill announced that the war was over) but throughout the weekend. The Town Council will also be organising a competition for the “best dressed” shop window display, appropriate for the occasion and will be in contact with local retailers closer to the weekend. We do hope that you will join us in these celebrations and if you have any suggestions of your own, please contact us through the details provided below. Email: clerk.bournetc@btconnect.com or enquiries.bournetc@btconnect.com Visit our website: www.bournetowncouncil.org.uk 8

Friday May 8th (Bank Holiday) • 2.55pm – The Last Post • 3.00pm – The Playing of Battle’s O’er It was at 3pm on May 8th 1945 when British Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, announced that the war was over. Thousands of pipers around the world will play Battle’s O’er, a traditional air performed on the bagpipes at the end of a battle. • 3.00pm – The Nation’s Toast to the Heroes of World War Two To coincide with the playing of Battle’s O’er, and in association with the British Beer and Pub Association and its members, thousands of pubs throughout the United Kingdom, Channel Islands and the Isle of Man will be asking their customers to raise a glass at 3pm and take part in ‘The Nation’s Toast to the Heroes of World War Two’. • 6.55pm (Local Time) – A Cry for Peace Around the World Town criers and other people around the world will be undertaking a special international ‘Cry for Peace Around the World’ in all manner of locations, starting off in New Zealand. • 7.00pm – Ringing out for Peace In association with the Central Council of Church Bell Ringers, bells in cathedrals, churches and other locations will ring out in a collective celebration of peace. The sound of bells is deeply rooted in British culture, providing the soundtrack to historic moments – calling us to pray, to work, to arms, to celebrate and, in times of crisis, to come together. • 7.00pm onwards – Parties and Celebration It’s a chance to bring communities together in common friendship. Towns and cities twinned with those overseas may consider inviting them to join in the celebrations, providing an opportunity to reinforce international bonds, and reflect on the importance of peace on the occasion of this important anniversary. Celebrations could take many forms, from street parties with a 1940s theme to barbecues and firework displays. This will include the Town Council’s ‘VE75 – A party to remember’ featuring the Candy Bars and The Blitz Crew Dancers. The event will be held at the Corn Exchange Bourne.
Saturday May 9th Enjoy a whole day of celebrations and parties. The weekend offers the chance to organise something really special to commemorate the 75th anniversary of VE Day. We’re expecting parties galore in streets, neighbourhoods, schools and village halls, perhaps with food and dress reflecting the 1940s. Wartime loaf, eggless sponge cake, vegetable turnovers, curried carrots and Lord Woolton pie. And don’t forget the spam! We already know that the following events are planned: • Elsea Park Street Party, organised by the Management Trust. • The WI at Dyke are planning a sing-song celebration at the Village Hall on Saturday afternoon. • An evening of entertainment at ‘The Old Town Hall’, organised by the Town Hall Trust.
Sunday May 10th We are planning a parade on the Sunday afternoon (as we would on Remembrance Sunday) ending with a service on the Memorial Gardens. The Mayor will be invited to read out the ‘Tribute to Millions’ .

It’s Time to Put a Spring in Your Step! asks Claire Gray, owner of Renu
A
s daylight hours increase and the spring flowers start to show their heads, it’s a great time to maximise on the season and put a little spring in your step.
Defined as “having a confident, energetic demeanour”, people with ‘spring’ tend to be cheerful with a buoyant attitude. Here are my five favourite ways to put some spring in your step:
1
Get plenty of sleep. Sleeping may seem like the opposite of what you are looking for, but energy and focus start with a good night’s sleep. Starting the day well-rested helps you feel inspired and motivated. If you struggle to sleep, try minimising high sugar foods, limiting television and electronic devices, at least an hour before you retire, and sleep in a dark room that is not too hot, (about 17 degrees). Aromatherapy oils can also assist you. Your skin regenerates at night and Decleor’s ‘Iris Lavandula’ night balm is designed to replenish your skin and assist a good night’s sleep.
2
Regular Exercise. If you want to start slowly, that’s absolutely fine – it’s better to start slowly than not start at all! Make a commitment to exercise regularly, even if it’s just a couple of times a week. Again, something is better than nothing, and regularity is important if you want to see
results. Our thirty-minute workout routine is a great place to start and is suitable for all ages and fitness levels.
3
Spring Cleaning. Doing some cleaning puts spring into your home and a spring into your step! Just getting a corner of the house or office cleaned up can help you feel accomplished and refreshed. Open the windows and give your rooms a detox, even if it’s just for a few minutes a day.
4
Redecorate. You don’t have to do anything major. Maybe put some fresh flowers around the house or change a picture or two. Change the throw or cushions. Try something new!
5
Find Opportunities. Being on the lookout for opportunities to exercise, eat healthier and other little lifestyle pick-me-ups will definitely put a spring in your step. Always be aware of how you can make an event healthier or more interesting. Take the stairs, park a little further away and walk. If it’s raining, put on a raincoat and wellingtons and take a walk. Just approaching life this way can foster a more energetic outlook! If you would like to try our Ladies Gym, and benefit from our regular updates on achieving a healthy lifestyle and feeling more energised, please contact our reception team to book a free trial.

Exciting News from Claire Gray at Renu “We are thrilled to announce that Sally (previously of Eden Skin Centre) is joining the renu team on a full-time basis. Drawing on Sally’s expertise, we will endeavour to deliver the very best customer experience for all of our combined clients. Sally’s role will be to support the business with recruiting, training and developing new and existing therapists, working closely with our senior therapists, Katy May and Helen. Eden Skin Centre has been resident in the Haven Room at renu since September 2019. During this time, Sally and I have worked closely together and have now combined our talents and treatments to bring our clients a choice of the very best treatments available. With over twenty-five years’ experience as a beauty therapist and a previous business owner, Sally has so much to offer, namely expertise, experience and knowledge in skin care and as an expert massage therapist. Whilst her history is with Dermalogica, she has been at the Decleor Academy for most of February this year and will be able to offer a range of Decleor treatments from the beginning of March, and Carita facials from April. These will include Decleor antiageing facials, ‘Mother-to-be’ treatment, Aroma body and, (soon to be on our treatment menu) Decleor Bamboo Massage, tipped to be Sally’s favourite massage!”
Spend a Choral Evening in the Company of Beethoven and Bernstein at Peterborough Cathedral Peterborough Cathedral Choir, Youth Choir and Festival Chorus will join forces with Peterborough Choral Society and Peterborough Philharmonic Orchestra on Saturday March 21st, for a unique performance of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony and Leonard Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms. The concert is being held to mark the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth in 1770. The Ninth Symphony was the final complete symphony that Beethoven wrote, and was first performed in 1824. It is best known for its fourth and final movement, the stirring ‘Ode to Joy’ – one of the most beloved pieces of music in history. Pushing the boundaries in using choral forces in an orchestral form, this Beethoven masterpiece, performed in the spectacular setting of the Cathedral, will be something not to be missed. Bernstein’s inspiring Chichester Psalms was premiered in 1965 as part of that year’s Southern Cathedrals Festival. The piece contains text from a variety of Psalms and is performed in Hebrew. Bernstein’s website describes it as “a magically unique blend of Biblical Hebrew verse and Christian choral tradition; a musical depiction of the composer’s hope for brotherhood and peace”. Tickets are either £15, £20 or £25 (unreserved seating) and are available at https:// bit.ly/37mIyN0. Book soon, so as not to miss out on this extraordinary spectacle.

Recharge Your Health - Reach Your Weight and Health Goals The list of hip ways to eat has expanded rapidly. Every week, it seems we’re bombarded with a new super food, a new way to lose “seven pounds in seven days”!
important determinant in choosing which foods are right for you and which foods cause inflammation, digestive problems, or weight gain.
Generalities versus precision
Encouraging words from two of our “success stories”
We are all different and one piece of nutritional advice can serve you and enhance your health, whereas the same piece of information will have the opposite effect on your friend, your child or your partner. I could tell you to … • eat organic • include more vegetables • chew your food • eat locally • eat according to the seasons • eat like your prehistoric ancestors • eat like the people living around the Mediterranean …and so on. These are generalities, but you still wouldn’t know which foods are compatible with your biochemical and genetic individuality. I have been a nutritionist for over twenty-five years, with a mix of clinical experience as well as working with semi-professional boxers. I have clocked up thousands of hours of helping people create lasting, lifelong health and energy and learned that one size just does not fit all! What works for one person, may not work for the next... Some bodies thrive best on hard exercise, others on gentle movement. Some bodies need good amounts of meat and fish, others much less. Different bodies need different levels of sleep and downtime. Pioneering and ongoing research confirms that your blood type is the single most
Aoife Daley: “I adopted a very unhealthy diet at university, eating little else but potatoes, processed meat and dairy. Once I left, I had an overhaul of my lifestyle and turned vegetarian. I was delighted when this resulted in weight loss, but I wanted to improve further, health-wise. Having spoken to Wendy, she helped me realize the link between why I felt so much healthier on a plant-based diet – my blood type. I am a type A and thrive on this type of diet.” Dr Amy Lee, (GP in Cumbria): “Before I started using my personalised food plan I had, over a couple of years, reached a point where I was exhausted, getting frequent episodes of burning up every day which I realised was an inflammatory state, pain and swelling in multiple joints, and an itchy sore rash on my face which was spreading. I felt like every meal was toxic as I felt unwell each time I ate and therefore I really wasn’t keen to eat. This was despite having given up dairy, gluten, alcohol and many fruits and vegetables. It was becoming very difficult to concentrate at work. I knew that mainstream medicine had no answers for me, except maybe oral steroids or strong immune suppressant medications, both of which would have caused severe side effects, so I was desperate to avoid them. In just six months, I have my life back on track! I am very grateful. I am also encouraging several of my patients to try it.”

HYPNOTHERAPY - RAPID TRANSFORMATION Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is a powerful tool for rapid transformation, allowing you to move forward in your life in a constructive, positive way and take control of your life. Free Initial Consultation I am delighted to be able to offer a free initial consultation to explain how I can help reduce stress, anxiety, panic attacks and also help to overcome problems such as – • Stopping smoking, • Stress, anxiety and panic attacks, • Overcoming fears and phobias, • Needle phobia, • Grief, loss or change, • Preparing for surgery, • Confidence and self-esteem, • Children’s and teen hypnotherapy, • Depression, • Obsessive compulsive disorder, • Post-traumatic stress disorder,
• Insomnia, • Irritable Bowel Syndrome, • Addictions, • Fibromyalgia, • Weight loss and disordered eating, • Performance – sports, arts, personal or business. “Change your brain change your life” The initial consultation focuses on explaining how the brain works and how it can sometimes cause us to react to situations in a way that might not be best for us, and what we can do to take control and make the changes to our life to be the best version of you. Having hypnotherapy is a bit like when you’re reading a book, watching a film, driving, or out for a run maybe, and how time passed so quickly, almost without you noticing. This is what naturally occurring trance feels like. Combined with a simple, guided relaxation technique you can reach a level of relaxation which is used in the hypnotic process. We use this trance
state to influence the subconscious mind to behave how you want it to behave. Hypnotherapy helps you establish your desired goal and where you would like to be in a steady and controlled way. In the consultation, you will receive a free relaxation CD or MP3 to take away with you to listen to in the safety and comfort of your home. I am a fully qualified and accomplished clinical hypnotherapist and psychotherapist, DBS checked, seeing clients in Lincolnshire, Rutland, Peterborough, Nottinghamshire and Cambridgeshire. Hypnotherapy is completely natural, safe and relaxing. You will remain conscious and in complete control throughout. Book an appointment or visit the practice to discuss how I can help you with the issues you need resolving. “Embrace life and live to your fullest potential”

Spotlight on Clubs
Bourne Town Bowls Club - An Inclusive Sports Facility for Everyone! Since its inception in 1953, Bourne Town Bowls Club has established itself as a great “market town bowls club” and has teams playing in a variety of outdoor bowls leagues throughout the region. In 2018, the BTBC Committee made a decision to improve the current club house facilities, enabling it to cater for everyone in our community. A funding campaign commenced during 2019 to raise relevant financial backing. So far, £100,000 has been raised, and the club are actively looking to raise another £40,000 to complete the project funding. As of February 2020, plans are on track to start the building work at the end of the 2020 summer season (October). BTBC are grateful to the organisations who have already pledged their financial support; these include the Len Pick Trust; Bruce Wake CT; Sports England CAF; SKDC CVS; Bourne United Charities and the Lottery Community Fund. Over recent years, BTBC has endeavoured to keep in touch with the fast-moving, ever-changing modern environment in which we all live. As such, we have been encouraging everyone in our community, (in particular those with special needs, the disabled and the visually impaired), to enjoy the lovely location, the sport of lawn bowls and the
social interaction available at the club. This diverse approach means we are keen to encourage everyone. This includes school children from age six, up to senior school level, (suitable for the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme); youth groups, such as the Scouts, Guides, Youth Centres, RAF, Army and St John’s Cadets, etc.; as well as the more traditional (dare we say ‘older’?) people, who want to get involved in a sport that is not too strenuous on the body, but certainly one that keeps the mind active. There is a full weekly programme, (starting in April until September), of “taster sessions” that cater for beginners, to weekly roll-ups, local competitions, as well as inter-club league matches. BTBC has something to offer everyone, including some great social, evening activities, such as Bingo; Quiz Nights; Beetle Drives and Hog Roasts, all held at the BTBC clubhouse where there is a friendly, jovial atmosphere and a small bar - everyone is welcome to these events! If you would like more information, please e-mail btbc2018@gmail.com. Visit www.bournetownbowlsclub. co.uk; Facebook fb.me/bournetownbowlsclub.

Celebrate 2020’s Anniversaries in Style & Comfort with Shaws of Maxey There’s lots to celebrate in 2020 so we’ve picked out some of this year’s most interesting anniversaries and given you the opportunity to go along and experience a little bit of it for yourselves! The UK is blessed with a wealth of history and we’re fortunate to have Europe’s largest conservation charity, The National Trust, to help us preserve it. 2020 sees the trust celebrating 125 impressive years, now caring for and protecting over 780 miles of spectacular coastline, more than 250,000 hectares of beautiful countryside, over 500 historic buildings and ancient gardens and nearly one million works of art! The founders’ original values are still at the heart of the Trust - protecting nature, beauty and history, for everyone, for ever. Fast forward to 1950 and you’ll find that it’s seventy years since the first official Formula 1 Grand Prix which took place at Britain’s very own Silverstone. The average age of the field was thirty-nine and included a Swiss baron, a Thai prince and a Jazz musician! Since then F1 has gone on to have thirty-three world champions, 108 winners and 764 different drivers! It’s also seventy years since the von Trapp family began a tour of Britain with a performance at The Royal Albert Hall. The family performed in more than 2,000 shows across the US and Europe, singing in over 12 different languages and going on to become the inspiration for Hollywood’s The Sound of Music. Finally, in 2020 we honour the eightieth anniversary of the Battle of Britain; The London Blitz; the first flight of the de Havilland Mosquito combat plane; and Churchill’s ‘Finest Hour’ speech. Let’s not forget, too, that it’s seventy-five years since the end of World War Two as “Victory in Europe” was realised. In two years’ time, we’ll be celebrating an anniversary of our own as our family-owned and managed company enters its centenary year! Four generations of family members have taken Shaws from one bus, kept in Mr. Frisby’s barn and repaired by candlelight, to the Europeanwide coach and tour operator that we are proud to be today.

2020 HOLIDAYS OUT NOW!
Words from the Mayor Brenda Johnson
I came back from our holiday to the news that all the tickets for my Valentine’s Ball at Toft House had sold out very quickly, so I am now busy selling tickets for my “Big Birthday Bash” at the Corn Exchange in Bourne. Tickets are £17.50 which includes a Fish and Chip Supper from George’s, no less, and are available from the Town Council offices or from me. The entertainment is by a Freddie Mercury and Brian May tribute band and I am really looking forward to meeting lots of you there. In January, we attended two superb Burns Night suppers, one in Sleaford, where the entertainment was from the very talented ‘Band From County Hell’, the other one was at Raunds in Northamptonshire. We have also attended the Chairs of South Kesteven Civic Dinner at Belton Woods in Grantham - a very pleasant evening where we were introduced to the new Chief Executive of the Council. Bourne Town Council are at present planning how to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of V.E. Day. We would like all the shops and businesses in town to get involved. There will be a full day of activities on Friday May 8th, ending with a dance in the Corn Exchange in the evening, with food from the era. On the next day, we want the whole community to get involved by arranging their own parties. We are aware that Elsea Park Community Centre are planning something, Dyke Village Hall are planning a tea, and we believe the Old Town Hall have some plans. Put up the bunting, get involved and arrange street parties; let’s show how the local community can come together to celebrate the young men and women who fought to enable us to be a free country. On the Sunday, we are planning a people’s parade through the town to take the same route as the Remembrance Parade. We are working with the local 4x4 volunteers to make this happen and hope to have service vehicles join this. If you have any ideas that you would like to bring to us, please contact the Clerk of the Council.

Property Lawyers in the Centre of Bourne Over fifteen years in Bourne, this highly respected firm is now located on North Street, right in the centre of town. It was established by Kelly Fleming, (a vastly experienced property lawyer who has specialised in residential conveyancing since 1997) with a staff of three. Still at the helm, (alongside three other directors), Kelly proudly explains that three has grown to twenty-two! SureMove place a strong emphasis on training and promoting from within the firm - “We like to home-grow our lawyers,” Kelly insists. Presently, three members of staff are being guided through their licensed conveyancers exams to become property lawyers;
the three other directors all started as employees and have been promoted; and staff retention is excellent, with six members of staff coming up to their fifteen-year anniversary soon. SureMove are specialists in conveyancing and all legal aspects of selling, buying, re-mortgaging and transferring of property. They deal with freehold, leasehold and shared ownership, plus the Government’s “Help to Buy” and the “Forces Help to Buy” schemes, for which they are registered, alongside HTB ISA bonus draw downs for first-time buyers and draw down of Lifetime ISA’s. Besides dealing with second-hand properties, SureMove has also a
specialist ‘New Build’ department, recommended by several national and local builders. They are totally independent and receive over 90% of their work through recommendations, mainly coming from agents, lenders, developers, intermediaries and their clients, together with strong recommendations and endorsements from satisfied clients. They are also Commissioners for Oaths. Regulated by the Council for Licensed Conveyancers, SureMove offer a fixed fee, giving you the comfort of knowing exactly what the conveyancing is going to cost. As an extra bonus, if you do not complete your purchase, they will waive any further costs. With their knowledgeable, friendly and professional staff utilising the latest technology, SureMove strongly believe in customer service. Operating in teams of two, (conveyancer and legal assistant) they work closely on your file, so when you call you will get hold of one of them who will know exactly what’s happening with your transaction. New initiatives to make the business more efficient include an App that will allow SureMove to ID clients using

face recognition, so clients won’t need to attend the office with ID, but will be able to do it all from their smartphone! There is also an online portal which will allow clients to track their progress, complete their forms and chat securely (very much like Whatsapp). Kelly explains how SureMove are members of the Bourne Business Club and support the “Love Bourne” initiative. Ever keen to support local
charities, they ran a “Wear it Yellow Day” last October, raising over £500 which was donated to the Don’t Lose Hope Café, a cause close to Kelly’s heart, as her daughter suffers from anxiety and regularly attends the amazing art sessions at the Café. Furthermore, they also support the local Bourne foodbank, making a collection every year. “Maximum effort, minimum fuss. Your move is our business” says
their strapline. Kelly accredits SureMove’s success to the strong team behind her, underpinned by the latest technology. “Our staff are continuously trained, and we have a strong customer service ethos, delivering our fresh approach to conveyancing,” she concludes. Having previously worked in customer services, Kelly is keen to deliver a stress-free move, keeping the clients fully appraised of their transaction at all times.

A massive expansion of the housing stock in recent years, in line with almost all settlements along the A15, northwards from Peterborough, has seen its character change. This one-time, almost entirely agricultural, village is now more of a “dormitory settlement”, but much of great value from the past has been retained, including a thriving and successful primary school. Successful new additions have appeared recently, for example the popular Co-op food store on the main road.
Our publisher, Claire, has been speaking with several businesses and individuals in the village, some of which can now “discover” themselves under our spotlight! The bustling New Day Baptist Church, Hall’s Garage and Clark Catering figure prominently, but mention must also be made of the ever-popular Morton Fish and Chip shop, which continues to attract customers, long after Pauline and the late David Exton ran what used to be many people’s favourite chippy in the area!

Dyke Chapel and New Day, Morton
– A Welcome from the Pastor
Hi, I’m Pastor Andy McManus. Some readers may possibly remember me from a few years ago, as the local Police Inspector. My wife Kay and I have now had the privilege of leading two Baptist churches for nearly seven years, Dyke Chapel and New Day, Morton. Dyke is our “traditional” church - a beautiful woodbeamed chapel, hand-held hymn books, and an organ played at full blast every Sunday, from 6.30pm till 7.30pm. New Day is more contemporary. We are open most days and/or evenings, with a group of around fifty people meeting every Sunday at 10.30am. Sunday service is lively with a band, videos, and family fun. Kids can stay or join their own group, with the upstairs zone for youngsters. There’s always coffee and cake, café style, every first Sunday. Genuine friendships are formed and encouraged. Our three different, weekly children and young person’s clubs cover Reception to Year 10. Each have around fifteen to twenty attending and recently we went indoor wall climbing as part of our regular special events. I think my favourite group is our “White Heather” group, currently comprising twenty-eight members, all retired, who meet m a rch 2 0 20
fortnightly and are always up to something; making gifts, quiz, bingo and much more. Recently, they had a ’stay-cation’, dressed in sunny holiday clothes, themed music, with props including a sandy beach! I suspect the word “church” is normally perceived as dull, judgemental, sometimes worse! I wasn’t a Christian until the age of forty, when I had the surprise of meeting a genuinely caring Pastor. He shook my world view, with real people helping each other, in order to help their community. Our strapline is simply, “God IN, love OUT”. But you don’t know till you’ve found out for yourself. The Pastor asked me, “Is there more to life than just life?” Obviously, this is very broad, but he was getting me to search myself as to what motivated me at forty and looking at the bigger questions. After thirty years in the police, I like evidence, not wishy-washy feelings. I started researching all religions, I found that Christianity withstood rigorous study, and I ended up getting a degree in it, never thinking that I would actually be leading a church! So…if you want genuine friendships, and some real answers to the biq questions, please contact me or just call by.

Hall’s - Village Garage but International Reputation for MGs In 1948, an ex-RAF engineer/ motor car enthusiast, Charlie Hall, opened his garage on the A15 at Morton crossroads. Seventy-two years on, the garage remains and flourishes, now in the hands of Charlie’s youngest son, Steve and his wife Lynne. In 1983, they took on the challenge of maintaining what had become a very popular centre for motor car servicing, repairs and sales, of both new Vauxhalls and used vehicles, along with fuels.

By this time, Steve had already bought his first MGB GT in 1975 and his love affair with the famous brand had begun. Ask any local today what Hall’s Garage symbolises and you’re most likely to hear, “That’s the MG garage!” - perhaps because of the impressive display of the MG sports cars which have adorned the forecourt for many years. However, Steve assures me that Hall’s Garage remains the busy village garage it has always been, with generations of the same families returning for servicing and repairs – “The petrol pumps disappeared twenty-five years ago in the face of hostile competition from the supermarkets,” he explains. When members of the MG Car Club, (of which Steve had become a member in the early days) recognised his enthusiasm and the fact that here was a garage more than capable of dealing with minor issues, they started to bring along their pride and joy, not just for the high quality attention demanded of such a vehicle, but also for possible modifications. So began the next chapter in the Hall’s Garage story. They now offer a full range of restoration services, and few restorers nationally can offer all the services which are available in-house at this small Lincolnshire garage! Many prestigious awards have come their way, and such is their reputation that many of their vehicles have been exported around the world. Adding further to their list of successes, Hall’s Garage has produced many MG race cars, some of which
Hall’s Garage in the early years – Late 1940s and 1950s have won the MGCC BCV8 Championship in Standard, Modified and V8 Classes, whilst race engines, built by Hall’s, have also powered winning cars in the MGCC Metro Championship and Mini Stocks. For the last nine years, since acquiring the Tifosi company, Hall’s can now supply the complete ‘Tifosi Rana’ kit for the D.I.Y. car enthusiast, with full backup servicing, or provide the “turn key” version – a unique sports car created in the Morton workshop! All of the success and enviable reputation gained by Halls’ Garage over the years has been down to their dedicated collection of skilled mechanics and administrators down the years. Today’s team comprises father and son, Michael and Jason Elliott in the bodyshop, Danny Read in servicing, Mike Denton on tuning and engine work, and Ian MacKenzie as office administrator. Somehow, I just didn’t believe him when Steve described himself as “just the general dog’s body” – this is one very well-tuned engineering operation indeed … with full order books for the foreseeable future!

Life as a Land Army Girl in 1940 Part 1 of 2

he following account has recently come to our attention and provides a taste of what many young women would have had to have lived through, during World War Two. It concerns a teenager called Doris Streatfield who was to spend a couple of years in this part of South Lincolnshire in the early part of the war.
They at last reached Kirkby Underwood and walked on beyond it to a large green hut which would be their assembly point every morning. (This is likely to be Callans Wood – Ed.) Then, they tramped further, through the barley fields and into a new plantation, where they sickled away the long grass to give the young trees light.
“Doris was born and bred in London but was evacuated in 1940 to her grandparents in Lincolnshire. On an impulse, she enrolled with the forestry branch of the Women’s Land Army at the age of seventeen-and-a-half. She took a bus and alighted at a crossroads in the middle of nowhere, (presumably Morton! – Ed.) to be met by an organiser who took her to a billet down the road in the small hamlet of Hanthorpe, north of Bourne.
‘My goodness, what a back-breaking job! Up and down these fields we toiled, and I must confess many a young tree lost its top!’
She had a shock on her first morning in forestry. She couldn’t ride a bike and there was no other means of getting about. Not that there was a bike for her that first day: she and her fellow lumberjill set off pushing the friend’s bike. ‘Oh dear, oh dear – gumboots, bib-and-brace overalls, thick socks, haversack with my lunch and a bottle of cold tea. The miles we walked seemed to be eternity’. What had she let herself in for? 42

Her next trial was the winter. ‘You can imagine how we girls suffered – we were all town-bred and not used to the wide-open spaces. On one particularly bitter day I was so cold when I returned to the billet that my colleagues had to prise my fingers off the handlebars of my bike. My landlady made me sit with my feet in a bowl of hot mustard water, saying I wasn’t strong enough for this sort of work and I ought to go home. I gritted my teeth, determined not to lose face’.” Next month: Read what happened next, once Doris had decided to transfer to the newly-formed, Women’s Timber Corps.

“The Mirror and the Light”
“The Spitfire Sisters”
by Hilary Mantel
by Margaret Dickinson
Release date: March 5th, 2020. Pre-order the longawaited sequel to “Wolf Hall” and “Bring Up the Bodies”, the stunning conclusion to Hilary Mantel’s Man Booker Prize-winning Wolf Hall trilogy. ‘If you cannot speak truth at a beheading, when can you speak it?’ England, May 1536. Anne Boleyn is dead, decapitated in the space of a heartbeat by a hired French executioner. As her remains are bundled into oblivion, Thomas Cromwell breakfasts with the victors. The book traces the final years of Thomas Cromwell, the boy from nowhere who climbs to the heights of power, offering a defining portrait of predator and prey, of a ferocious contest between present and past, between royal will and a common man’s vision: of a modern nation making itself through conflict, passion and courage.
“Girl, Woman, Other”
It is the 1930s and the Maitland family have spent the years following the Great War struggling to come to terms with its catastrophic aftermath, and their hopes now lie with the next generation. Their Lincolnshire village of Doddington suffered terrible loss and it has taken great courage for the bereaved families to rebuild their lives without their loved ones.
When war is declared again, it is Daisy Maitland and her peers who must now take up the fight for freedom. As war rages in the skies and on the ground, Daisy, her friends and her family - at home and across the Channel - will find their bravery and strength tested to the very limits in their determination to save their country. And they have learned one of the most valuable lessons of all: true love will find a way.
by Bernardine Evaristo.
Paperback release date: March 5th 2020. Winner of the Booker Prize 2019. This is Britain as it has never been told. From Newcastle to Cornwall, from the birth of the twentieth century to the teens of the twenty-first, “Girl, Woman, Other” follows a cast of twelve characters on their personal journeys through this country and the last hundred years. They’re each looking for something - a shared past, an unexpected future, a place to call home, somewhere to fit in, a lover, a missed mother, a lost father, even just a touch of hope . . .

A New Way to Tie the Knot After five years of hard campaigning and lobbying, from December 31st, 2019 civil partnerships are available for heterosexual unions, as well as for same-sex couples. The advocates of civil partnerships for all identified a need for providing those who do not wish to take the route of a religious ceremony or the traditional trappings of a marriage, with a civil alternative that nonetheless provides all the legal benefits and protections of marriage.
Our comprehensive service is designed to help you buy and understand your new home; explaining repair and maintenance issues and how old buildings ‘work’ along with advice on listed buildings, legal matters etc. We have a wealth of experience in particular with larger and historic properties and take pride in our attention to detail, pragmatic approach, quality of service and approachable manner. So now, for the princely sum of £46, a man and a woman can book an appointment at your local Register Office to be joined in a partnership on a purely civil basis. Civil partnership confers exactly the same rights of marriage with regard to sharing assets, pensions and inheritance on death. Perhaps it will be seen as a more straightforward method of achieving legal commitment in a relationship for cohabiting couples who have no special legal rights at all. There are 3.5 million couples cohabiting today in the U.K., many of whom mistakenly believe they have the protection of “a common law marriage”. Such a concept does not, of course, exist. So, it will be interesting to see how many choose the civil partnership option – it can certainly be a lot less trouble and expense than a wedding! 44

How You Can Join the Fight in the War Against Scammers by Eileen Le Voi at Safe Local Trades It will come as no surprise to read that fraud is the most commonly experienced crime in the UK, with costs to the economy and individual victims running into billions of pounds. In January 2020 alone, £88,000 was lost to “Courier Fraud” in Cambridgeshire, with much more lost across other different types of frauds, especially “Romance Fraud”. The impact of fraud, scams and related offences can be devastating; ranging from unaffordable personal losses suffered by vulnerable victims to impacting the ability of organisations to stay in business. Data breaches continue to be a key enabler of fraud, with personal and financial information obtained in a breach, which is then used to commit frauds affecting individuals, the private and public sectors alike. Scammers are becoming more and more sophisticated in their methods; often posing as police, banking or government bodies in attempts to promote an authoritative approach. However, there are many agencies working harder than ever to stamp out the scammers - including Friends Against Scams; an initiative which empowers members of the public to join the fight on fraud and become a “Scam Champion”. Friends Against Scams is a National Trading Standards Scams Team initiative that aims to protect and prevent people from becoming victims of scams. The county-wide initiative is the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Against Scams Partnership (CAPASP) who are committed to working towards stamping out scams, from postal and online fraud to telephone scams and doorstep rogue traders. And it is easy to get involved. The first step is to take the Friends Against Scams online learning at https://www. friendsagainstscams.org.uk/elearning/Cambridgeshire You could then become a Scams Champion, gaining all the information and resources you need to help spread the word – see https://www.friendsagainstscams.org.uk/ become-a-scamchampion. Did you know? • Scams cost the UK economy between £5-10 billion a year. • 53% of people over sixty-five have been targeted by scams. • Only five% of scams are reported. • The average scam victim has lost over £3,000. • You are twice as likely to fall victim to fraud than any other type of crime. On a national level, Action Fraud works to inform and empower members of the public about the latest scams, and also offers a fraud reporting service. If you think you, or a loved one, may have been the victim of a scam, report it .To find out how you can sign up for the fight against fraud, and read some tips on spotting a scam, go to www.friendsagainstscams.org.uk. m a r ch 2 0 2 0

TRUSTED FINANCIAL ADVICE THE NFU MUTUAL WAY In an environment of ever increasing bank and building society closures, particularly in market towns, NFU Mutual continues to excel in providing a full financial planning service. We are able to provide excellent customer service through our local agency offices, which give our financial advisers the ability to meet with customers on a face to face basis, a rarity these days. One of the particular areas where it may now be difficult to obtain quality advice is about providing protection for family or business. NFU Mutual can offer a variety of life and critical illness policies through our partnership with AIG. A staggering 42% of people with a mortgage do not have life insurance in place, leaving little reassurance should the primary breadwinner of a family die prematurely. In a similar fashion many business loans or overdrafts are not adequately protected, leaving businesses vulnerable. Mark Hatton-Smith, (pictured) operates out of the Bourne Office and is available to meet customers on a face to face basis in order to give the crucial advice
that is necessary in this essential, but often neglected area of financial planning. Alternatively, for those customers who prefer to have an initial chat over the phone, NFU Mutual has an excellent team of agency staff who are happy to discuss your requirements. Mark is also able to give advice on many other areas of financial planning, whether it be simple pension and ISA planning, or more complex areas such as pension transfers, SIPPs and investment trusts. NFU Mutual Financial Advisers advise on NFU Mutual products and selected products from specialist providers. We’ll explain the advice services and the charges. Financial advice is provided by NFU Mutual Select Investments Ltd.

Time is Running Out! - by Matthew Biggs - Liberty Partnership Ltd
I think it would be fair to say that we all look forward to lots of things over the course of the year. For me, I love the start of the year as it means the Rugby Six Nations is just around the corner! And we all look forward to celebrating Christmas and birthdays with our loved ones. I bet, however, that not many of us look forward to the new tax year! That said, I believe it really is worth bearing in mind when the new tax year starts and what that means to you. But
before we get to the new tax year in April, we need to make sure we aren’t letting the current tax year get away from us. Each tax year, we are given several tax-free allowances from the government, so why not make the most of them? For instance, in the current (2019/2020) tax year, you can save up to £20,000 into an Individual Savings Account (ISA). ISAs are not only an excellent way of saving money; they are also the ideal vehicle to invest your savings, as any gains are free of Capital Gains Tax and Income Tax. You also have an Annual Allowance for your pension contributions. Pensions have long been a haven for tax planning, especially if you’re

self-employed or the director of a limited company. The tax advantages regarding pension contributions do stop there though. Are you stung by the Child Benefit Tax trap? A pension contribution can help. Have you lost your entitlement to the Personal Allowance? A pension contribution can help there too. So, before time runs out on this tax year, it might be a good idea to explore what options are available to you. However, we know that this can be very confusing, so that is where we come in. We have a team of highly experienced and friendly advisers who would be able to guide you through this, often complex subject. Jump On-board with Newton Fallowell to Save the Planet! by Jason Treadwell, Managing Director
With spring on the horizon, there is no better time for us to launch our pledge to help the environment, by planting a tree every time we agree a sale. With climate change being such a huge talking point and issue to be tackled, we are keen to play our small part in helping where possible. With over thirty offices leading the way for sales across many towns throughout The Midlands, our aim is to have a forest planted in no time! However, in order to plant these sold boards, we are always in need of more properties to sell! No matter the size, price or condition of the home, we have buyers waiting for our call about the next available property we have that will be of interest to them. It will be our responsibility to get you moving, with the bonus of saving the planet with another new tree! Mothers Day and the Law Words from Richard Wood
Mothers Day is a special time for mothers and for family and togetherness. Although the Law sometimes appears somewhat abstract it is fundamental to family life. In fact legal matters are inextricably linked to families and caring for our mothers or anyone else who is a loved one is right at the centre of matters that we deal with.. At Double and Megson we can offer assistance for happy times such as moving house and in protecting our loved ones in the future in wills and lasting powers of attorney. These are
the positive things we can do to assist. Sadly sometimes there are more difficult issues arising such as advising or acting in a dispute or perhaps in an estate when a person has died. We have had instructions from two or even three generations of clients and so family life is very much at the heart of what we do. Knowing that you have protected your loved ones in a will can be particularly reassuring. Setting up a lasting power of attorney can be beneficial to protect your interests if you become immobile or lose capacity or even confidence in day to day matters. A loved one can be
appointed to assist you in this regard. Where sadly there are disputes we can provide reassuring calm advice under the principles of Resolution (Formerly the Solicitors Family Law Association). As solicitors we are highly regulated and insured and used to providing advice in any manner of family scenarios. Double and Megson is proud of its approach to the law. The Firm has been at the heart of the community in Bourne for over forty years. We wish everyone a very happy Mothers Day.

“Chat over a cuppa” - with Maureen Ward
(Words by Discovering magazines’ Events Co-ordinator, Hilary Bloomer)
If you have visited the Old Town Hall recently, you may have noticed, in the Shambles bar, a small exhibition of work by local artist, Maureen Ward. I had the great pleasure of spending a splendid two and a half hours chatting to her about her life and looking at the array of wonderful art works that she has produced. I didn’t intend to stay that long, but it was fascinating listening to her talk about her life and, as someone whose drawings are no better than a five-year-old’s, I was in awe of her work, its variety and intricacy. Some of you may have come across Maureen, as she has lived in Bourne for the past fifty years and during that time has worked at the Robert Manning, now Bourne Academy, where she helped in the Art Department, firstly as a volunteer helper and then as an assistant, finally helping students with their A level and GCSE work. She has tutored adult evening classes in dressmaking and pattern-cutting in Bourne, and adult education Art classes at Stamford College. She now runs the U3A Thursday Art Group. Maureen was born in London but, during the Second World War, when her father was in the Army (later to be taken a Prisoner of War) her mother decided to take the family out of London, and they moved to Coulsdon in Surrey. At the age of fourteen, she attended Art School in Epsom to study Art and Fashion with the intention of pursuing a career in fashion. However, this wasn’t to be, as the jobs were few and far between: she was offered a job in illustration but declined, a decision she later greatly regretted. A job at Peter Robinsons, at Oxford Circus, working in the fabric department was all that she could get. She met her husband, John, who was in the RAF and consequently moved quite often, living in Germany, Singapore, Cambridge and Bristol, before moving to Bourne. Maureen was married at a fairly young age and had seven children, (six boys and one girl). She now has sixteen grandchildren and eight great-

grandchildren. However, she doesn’t see all of them regularly, as she has one son living in Canada, one in Australia and another in the USA. Most people in their seventies spend time at leisure, enjoying a relaxing time and holidaying, but in 2006 Maureen decided to take an honours degree in Fine Art at Stamford College and graduated in 2009, at the age of seventy-four. She thoroughly enjoyed the course, saying, “It opened up my vision. I had a certain style and I remember the words, ‘Get out of the envelope Maureen!’” This she duly did by producing a series of paintings for her finals that were a long way off her comfort zone, and these can be seen in the Shambles at the Old Town Hall. Maureen found it “very liberating” painting in styles she had not tried before. After Michael Tolkein, (J.R.R. Tolkein’s eldest grandson), had seen examples of her work, he asked her to illustrate his book, “Rainbow,” which took her two years to complete. I was lucky enough to be shown the original sketchbook and found the drawings enchanting. She has also designed the logo and flag for Bourne Town Bowls Club. When I arrived to meet her, she asked me if I had heard of the ‘Silver Swans’ (I had), as she had just joined the classes and had been that morning: for information, it is a ballet class for the over-fifty-fives. Maureen just comes into that category, at eightyfive years old this year!! I came away thinking what an amazing lady she is.

- The latest exhibition at John Clare Cottage is the work of local artist, Cilla Marseglia. Cilla has been interested in painting since she was very young, gaining an ‘O’ level in Art whilst at school; she is mainly self-taught and has been a member of CASA, the Castor and Ailsworth art group for several years. Cilla paints using various mediums and techniques in order to achieve the effect she is looking for. She works in layers applying textures and washes until she is happy with the depth of colour and tones. It is then that she adds the finer details. She is constantly experimenting and searching for new ways to improve and enhance her paintings. The John Clare Cottage is open on Fridays, Saturdays, and Mondays, 11am-3.00pm. During the summer, the band will take part in the Churches Together Fun Day, 66

and they will also be involved in Easter activities. We are looking to recruit some more musicians to enhance our band and build our numbers. Excellence is not a requirement enthusiasm, and a joy of playing music in a group, is! Please be aware that, although being a practising Christian is not a requirement, The Salvation Army is part of the Christian Church and we expect all members of the band to abide by the Christian ethos and to respect the beliefs of each member.
Lieutenant Sarah O’Grady on Bourne@salvationarmy.org.uk, letting us know what instrument you play, and your level of competence. We look forward to welcoming you to the Bourne Salvation Army Community Band.

With Solutions Personal Contract Plan. Available on Golf Hatch only. 18s+. Subject to availability and status. T&Cs apply. Offer available until March 31st, 2020. Indemnities may be required. Offers are not availabe in conjunction with any other offer and may be varied or withdrawn at any time. Accurate at time of publication. Freepost Volkswagen Financial Services. Figures shown are for comparability purposes; only compare fuel consumption and CO2 figures with other vehicles tested to the same technical procedures. These figures may not reflect real life driving results, which will depend upon a number of factors including the accessories fitted (post-registration), variations in weather, driving styles and vehicle load. There is a new test used for fuel consumption and CO2 figures (known as WLTP). The CO2 figures shown however, are based on a calculation designed to be equivalent to the outgoing (NEDC) test cycle and will be used to calculate vehicle tax on first registration. The range of figures stated covers the entire Volkswagen Golf model range including all-electric, hybrid and petrol/diesel vehicles. All-electric vehicles are zero emissions while driving. Hybrid vehicle figures were obtained using a combination of battery power and fuel. For more information, please see www.volkswagen.co.uk/owners/wltp or consult your retailer. Data correct at 12/19. Figures quoted are for a range of configurations and are subject to change due to ongoing approvals/changes. Please consult your retailer for further information. Official fuel consumption figures for the Golf model range in mpg (litres/100km): Combined 0 (0.0) - 141.2 (2). Combined CO2 emissions 0-164g/km.
