Introduction

Welcome to Your April Issue. Welcome to our April edition and I’m astonished at just how quickly, within a few weeks, we’ve moved on from those cold, dark mornings, all that rain and all of those gales … and a welcome “bye-bye to Brexit!” Blossom and blooms are here, and summer is nearly upon us. And yet … to quote a good old Lincolnshire saying, “There’s ollus summat, mee-at!” and that something has certainly arrived with a vengeance. As we all try and come to terms with the Coronavirus pandemic, (with self-isolation, working from home, an almost complete shut-down of schools and universities, total absence of sport, panic buying and gloomy economic prospects all round), it’s increasingly difficult to “Keep Calm and Carry On!” (as we Brits are often advised to do). Let me add my own words of encouragement to you all, hoping that our issue will bring some light to the darkness and keep you informed and entertained, as we come together to celebrate a happy, and hopefully healthy, Easter.

Claire x

Over the last six years and almost seventy welcomes that I have written, never have I felt as uncomfortable as this. Whereas, we would normally be tempting you to visit restaurants and pubs, sign up for leisure centre activities or make the most of the great outdoors, this month the coronavirus pandemic has changed all that! Our team have created a magazine with “What’s on” activities and much more in the way of Easter-themed treats to enjoy … only for it to be transformed by the passage of time, and how quickly has that been? Features have been replaced and wonderful additions have appeared – volunteers offering help to ‘selfisolators’, for example. Instead of my usual monthly moment of mirth (a.k.a. dodgy one-liners), I leave you with the thought-provoking words of one of our foremost poets, Lemn Sissay: “How do you do it?” said the night. “How do you wake and shine?” “I keep it simple,” said light. “One day at a time.” Stay healthy, heed all the advice … and enjoy the read.

Make the Most of Every Day in These Troubled Times BY CLAIRE GRAY, RENU - HEALTH, BEAUTY & FITNESS

A

s we now find ourselves in the grip of this unprecedented “lockdown”, with Renu closed, along with most other establishments, I’d like to share the following with you. I hope it can provide some comfort and hope that life will go on as before, once we’ve all acted together to defeat the coronavirus. Our lives are a large collection of single days, one right after the other. The sun rises, the sun sets, and it rises again. And in the end, the lives we choose to live will be determined by how we choose to spend each day. It can seem that one day, it’s new year and the next, we are changing the clocks and preparing for the summer. The next step is summer days ahead, holidays, swimsuits and revisiting summer wardrobes.

Here are ten simple steps that will help you make the most of every single day.

1

Rest effectively - Rest is as essential to your body as water and air. Schedule some time to rest in your day and don’t feel guilty about it.

Get a good night’s sleep Take a look at your sleeping habits. You will have a much more productive day after a good night’s sleep.

7

2

8

Eat right - Put your health and wellbeing at the top of your priority list.

3

Exercise - Research shows that just twenty minutes moderate exercise can make you calmer, happier and more equipped to deal with whatever life throws at you today.

4

Accomplish one big task This may be as simple as one of the above! Set one task, not three, and feel good when you have achieved it.

Making a simple plan for each individual day, rather than longterm objectives can help you enjoy life and achieve your goals.

6

5

Do one thing that you love Hobbies and doing things that you love breathe life into who you are. Do one thing that you love every day.

Be present with others - Put away distractions, engage in conversations and ask questions. Give to someone else - Invest your life in someone else every day. Help a co-worker, fund a local charity or just make that phone call to a friend who needs to hear from you.

9

Nurture your soul - Find time each day to appreciate your surroundings and be grateful. Our lives are more than flesh and blood.

10

Reset - Tomorrow is another day with great potential and opportunity. Take time each evening to appreciate the good things about today and make a plan for tomorrow. Please see our Facebook page for ideas on how to stay fit healthy and gorgeous during lockdown.

WE’LL BE BACK!

SKY PE Ses sion s Av aila ble

Let the sun shine through Whilst it is normal for everyone to feel sad or upset from time to time, when these feelings are overwhelming, persistent, or are affecting your ability to function on a daily basis, it may be that you are suffering from depression. Everyone feels a bit low sometimes, but depression is much more than this. It may be that you suffer from feelings of helplessness, guilt or worthlessness; perhaps you have difficulty making decisions, being overwhelmed or not concentrating on anything; maybe you feel tired and pessimistic all the time. Without expert treatment, your depression symptoms may become progressively worse. It has the potential to impact on all areas of your life, from relationships, to your performance at work or school.

Feeling hopeless and helpless? In the depressed brain, the primitive part of the mind is much more active and this part of the brain is normally very negative. This makes us feel hopeless and unable to see a way out and can be a lonely and unforgiving negative place to be. The depressed brain is

starved of positive chemicals and restricts your ability to think clearly and resourcefully. Depression takes away our confidence and our ability to remain rational and positive about ourselves and our situations. In this state of mind, we lose the ability to think clearly and intellectually.

Want to stay in bed? When we feel depressed, we want to put our life on pause and stop interacting with the rest of the world. We are much more tired and lacking in healthy energy. We just want to stay curled up in our duvets and shut ourselves away. If you have been depressed, you may have noticed that you can ruminate or worry a lot during those periods. This type of worrying is typified by taking an ‘all or nothing’ thinking style. This is because when we are stressed and emotionally aroused beyond a certain point, the mind takes the fight/flight approach and looks at the worst, most extreme, scenario. We don’t look at our situation from a rational perspective, taking in all the possibilities like we might do when we are more relaxed.

“A pill cannot make your unconscious, conscious.” How does hypnotherapy help? Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can offer an alternative approach, helping you to focus on the positives in your life and working towards a brighter future. It provides a bespoke treatment programme getting you to where you want to be and enjoying life again. Hypnotherapy is designed to manage the chemistry inside your brain, to help you move towards an optimistic outlook. It provides you with coping mechanisms for life, which allow you to recognise negative thought patterns and respond to them in a healthier way, reducing the likelihood that you will become depressed again in the future.

Age is No Limit for Orthodontics! BY RICHARD COUSLEY, CONSULTANT ORTHODONTIST AT THE PRIESTGATE CLINIC

M

ost people associate orthodontics with teenagers wearing metal fixed braces. However, nowadays the range of ages of patients suitable for orthodontics extends from seven to seventy years! Here are a few pointers to age considerations if you’re considering having either your or your child’s teeth straightened.

BEFORE

AFTER

BEFORE

AFTER

PRIMARY SCHOOL AGE There’s a common misconception that children needn’t see an orthodontist until all adult teeth have erupted. However, most children benefit from a specialist assessment by eleven years of age, and some seven to ten-year-old children require early interception for bite problems and ectopic teeth (growing in abnormal jaw positions). A seven-year-old where the upper left incisor’s eruption is impeded, being treated with a transparent aligner brace. .......................................................................................

THE TEENAGE YEARS This is prime brace-time since the adult teeth have erupted and crucially facial growth may be harnessed and modified, especially if there’s an ‘underbite’ and small lower jaw size.

braces or transparent plastic aligners. Fortunately, many types of tooth and bite improvements are still biologically possible after facial growth has ceased because bone is a dynamic tissue throughout life. Therefore, even seventy-somethings can be treated successfully, provided that their teeth and gums are disease-free. In addition, a small number of adult patients, with a severe jaw mismatch, and/or airway restrictions benefit greatly from brace treatment combined with jaw (orthognathic) surgery (performed by a maxillofacial surgeon).

ADULTHOOD

A specialist can accurately diagnose features and then advise on the complete range of goals and treatment options for simple, through to complex problems.

Adults form a large proportion of my patients, typically having aesthetic (tooth coloured) fixed

RECHARGE YOUR HEALTH As we move into spring, are you thinking once again about weight loss, healthy eating and getting your health back? How about this time actually doing something about it … NOW? Something that will last: an eating plan that you can keep for a lifetime, because it suits YOU, is designed FOR you and takes into account WHO you are. So many diets and ways of eating are based on statistics, trends and ideas; the fact that it worked for one person and they wrote a book about it; scientific studies that leave out your individuality, That’s the secret - your individuality! Vegan. Vegetarian. Alkaline. Paleo. Raw. Juicing. Green smoothies. The list of hip ways to eat has expanded rapidly. Every week, it seems we’re bombarded with a new super food, a new way to lose “7 pounds in 7 days”, a new cleanse, a new smoothie recipe, a new way to be part of the cool-food crowd. True freedom and empowerment with your body doesn’t come from conforming to what that skinny woman or six-packed man is telling you to eat. It can only be found through honouring your physiology as completely unique and knowing exactly what your body needs. What works for one person, may not work for the next... so without this precise knowledge, anything else is guesswork. You end up jumping from bandwagon to bandwagon, trying to find the magic bullet that will help you get slim and look

as good as the people on the front of the raw food books. What concerns me, though, is that many of these ‘onesize-fits-all’ eating regimes can actually be damaging to people’s health.

ENCOURAGING WORDS: Kerrie Owen: “I had read about eating right for your blood type but never really understood why that was important. I had despaired when using most common diets that nothing worked for me longterm. I am now committed to changing my diet and lifestyle in line with Gene Living principles and guidance.” Sue: “Since eating for my blood type, I feel as if I have been internally cleansed and a fog lifted from my brain.” Roy: “During my recovery from chemotherapy for bone marrow cancer, I found I was struggling to regain my energy and health in general. Despite doing quite a lot of research on nutrition and healthy lifestyle, including changing my diet by cutting out all processed foods and only eating fresh food, including a lot of vegetables, I felt I had reached a plateau which it seemed I could not rise above. It was only after consulting Wendy and adopting the blood group diet, that I saw an improvement in my health. This, in conjunction with the vitamins recommended by her, specific to my condition and blood type, has returned my health to normality.”

Mayor

2020 HOLIDAYS OUT NOW!

Words from the Mayor BRENDA JOHNSON

Holidays & Day Excursion by coach from your area

Holidays Tours & Private Hire I just cannot believe how quickly the month has gone. I hope this report finds you all well. My Valentine’s Ball held at Toft House Hotel was a great night. The event was sponsored by Toft House, and it raised just under £2,000 for my charities, once all the expenses were paid. We had the Great Pretenders to entertain us and they had everyone up on the dance floor. I would personally like to thank everyone who came, as well as Michael at Toft for arranging the wonderful food and service. It’s been another busy month, as we have attended events across the district. A very entertaining ‘Forties Night’ held by Bourne Lions at the Corn Exchange in Bourne in mid-February was followed the next day by a ‘Seed Swap Tea’ at Dyke Village Hall. We have also attended several coffee mornings in the town. It is always a pleasure when I can just drop in to support local causes. The Chairman of South Kesteven District Council held her Civic Service on Sunday March 1st at St Wulfram’s Church in Grantham. A delicious tea was provided afterwards, which gave us the chance to catch up with a lot of the “Chain Gang”. Later that week, I joined the Mayor of Stamford for afternoon tea in the Mayor’s Parlour, along with civic dignitaries from Fenland, Northamptonshire and Sleaford Councils. On March 7th we attended the Mayor of Market Deeping’s Civic Dinner at the Football Club and next day saw us going off to Market Rasen to their Civic Service – lots of travel and some very fine food and company. Bourne Town Council is presently in talks with officers from S.K.D.C. to discuss if there is to be any money coming to Bourne to support a large event, as we will not be having the ‘Ciclefest’ this year. We will keep you all updated. At the time of writing, we are forging ahead with plans to celebrate VE Day on Friday May 8th. However, we are kept updated on a daily basis with the Coronavirus pandemic and, unless we hear differently, we are still hoping to celebrate this important anniversary. In the meantime, please ensure that you observe all the advice coming out to keep yourselves well and free from illness. I continue to be grateful to you all for your support during my term of office. 14

THE ROYAL BRITISH LEGION CLUB BOURNE - PRESENTATION TO NEV TITLEY

BOURNE’S GEORGIE JONES WAS ALL SET TO BRING HER SHOW ‘ISH’ TO STAMFORD! Find out what it means to be a woman! There are plenty of things you wish you’d known as a teenager so, if you went back in time, armed with the knowledge you have now, maybe you’d do things differently. So many of us were clueless then, haphazardly navigating unfamiliar ground, awkwardly stumbling through first kisses, ‘Veeting’ our eyebrows and manoeuvring the politics of school discos. Georgie Jones, in her one-woman show ‘ish’, admits that most of us still don’t really know what we’re doing now! Set to a ’90s and ’00s pop and hip-hop soundtrack, ‘ish’ is a frank and humorous exploration of what it means to be a woman, or at least what it means to try and figure that out. Georgie hails from Bourne and is a product of Bourne Grammar School’s thriving Performing Arts Department.

The Royal British Legion (TRBL) Club Bourne hosted an entertainment evening on Saturday March 7th, during which there was a presentation made to Neville (Nev) Titley. Nev has been the Secretary and Members Secretary for the club since its opening over forty years ago. Nev has worked tirelessly with a lot of support from his wife Carole. Along with his secretarial duties, Nev has organised the entertainment and many other social events over the years. Unfortunately, due to health issues he is no longer able to carry on in this role. Nev and Carole’s son Mark, who lives with his family in Australia, was lucky enough to be on a business trip to Europe and was therefore able to attend this presentation. Nev was presented with a plaque and gift vouchers, whilst Carole was presented with a bouquet of flowers. Grateful thanks and appreciation for his years of dedicated service to the club were expressed by the Chairman, John Adams, on behalf of the committee, members and staff. Neville’s work will be much missed, but hopefully Nev and Carole will be familiar figures at the club into the future.

In 2018, she spent twelve months as Resident Artist at The Roundhouse, London, writing and performing a lot of what would eventually become ‘ish’; mostly poems about awkward snogging, all-consuming first loves and horrific waxing disasters. The show was then commissioned by a consortium of Midlands venues and supported by the Arts Council. This show was scheduled for May 2nd at Stamford Arts Centre, but has had to be postponed due to the COVID-19 epidemic. (Listen out for re-arranged dates once the situation has improved – this is sure to be the light at the end of a very dark tunnel! – Ed.) 16

BOOK NOW TO SEE THE DINOSAURS AT PETERBOROUGH CATHEDRAL Peterborough Cathedral has announced that tickets are on sale for “T. rex: The Killer Question”, the Natural History Museum’s touring exhibition which will be on show at the Cathedral from July 20th to August 31st, 2020. The exhibition, which was last seen in the UK at Longleat in 2018, includes a 12-metre-long static model of a T. rex as well as a life-size T. rex skeleton and nine animatronic dinosaurs. It poses the killer question: Was T. rex a ferocious hunter or a mere scavenger? To help visitors answer the question, the exhibition presents scenes showing the behaviour of several different dinosaur species, from the small and agile Sauronitholestes, to the savage Dromaeosaurus and the plant-eating Tenontosaurus. It also shows examples of bones and fossils to see what they can tell us about T. rex. The roaring of animatronic dinosaurs will come from the early sixteenth century ‘New Building’ at the far end of the Cathedral where the exhibition will be on display. On Wednesdays, there will be a special ‘quiet hour’ at around 11.00am for visitors who prefer to see the dinosaurs without sound and movement. This also means that the regular 11.00am service of Holy Communion can go ahead undisturbed. On Thursdays during the exhibition, there will be funpacked craft and storytelling sessions for children, entitled ‘To Extinction and Beyond’. Sessions will run at 11.00am, 1.00pm and 2.30pm each week and will focus on a different aspect of dinosaurs, from eggs to extinction to fossils. Nearer the time, it will also be possible to book tower top climbs and family-friendly Cathedral tours on selected dates. Tickets to see “T. rex: The Killer Question” are £6 per person, or £20 for a family ticket (two adults and up to three children aged 3-16 years). Tickets for ‘To Extinction and Beyond’, the children’s craft and storytelling sessions on Thursdays, are £5 per child. All tickets are available via the Cathedral’s website www.peterborough-cathedral.org.uk/t.rex or by calling 01733 355315 during office hours. A P RI L 2 0 2 0

Community News NEWS FROM BOURNE HEREWARD PROBUS CLUB President, Roger North opened the 375th meeting of Bourne Hereward Probus held at the Toft Country House Hotel Bourne on Monday March 9th, where there were thirty-three members present, with no guests nor any new members. Before starting the meeting, Roger asked members to stand for a oneminute-silence, in memory of Chris Searle, David Hinks and Dot Kelby.

India, Malaysia and The Sahara Desert, and his talk was very colourful, full of anecdotes and very well received by the members, from whom a number of questions followed. A vote of thanks was given by Bill Immink. The formal part of the meeting followed, with officers’ reports. Lunch was then taken, followed by the raffle, and the meeting ended with the Probian Toast.

Neville Taylor then introduced the main speaker, Mike Cross OBE, who gave a very descriptive and detailed account of his travels though the Nepali Himalayan Kingdom of Lo. Mike is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and Trustee and Chairman of the Young Explorers. His extensive travels also include The South Pole, North Western

The next meeting (the Annual General Meeting) is scheduled for Monday April 20th, whilst the next Hereward Probus Coffee Morning is on Wednesday 22nd April 22nd, also at Toft Country House Hotel. BOURNE LIONS SUPPORT NEW BOURNE RUNNING CLUB Following the huge success of a new Bourne-based running club, the Bourne and District Lions Club has awarded it a grant to help pay for additional British Athletics qualified run leaders. Natural Bourne Runners was formed in September ’19 with the promise that it would be free to all! It had just five runners attend its first session but membership numbers have since grown to over 80, with sessions regularly attracting more than 20 runners. Steve Cole, one of the founders, had this to say about the grant: “When we started the club we couldn’t have imagined how popular it would become in such a short space of time. At the moment we have just two qualified run leaders but we now need extra help. This money will allow us to send two willing members to a British Athletics Leadership in Running Fitness (LiRF) course, ensuring we can cope with future growth.” The club started with a single session on a Monday

evening but has quickly increased to four each week to cope with growing demand. Sessions are now on Monday and Wednesday evenings, plus two sessions on Saturdays. Three of the sessions range in distance from 5km to 15km, with Saturday afternoon tailored to those who want to run up to 15-miles. “At the moment our sessions start at 5km in distance making NBR ideal for those looking to make the step-up from 5km to 10km and beyond. We also enter events as a group and encourage the social aspect too…we’re more than just a club whose sole purpose is running. We feel the social aspect of being part of a group is just as important,” said Steve. “We can’t thank Bourne Lions enough. Since making contact they have been incredibly supportive of what we’re doing and how we’re offering a free service to the people of Bourne. Their generosity will ensure the club can continue to grow in numbers and the quality of sessions we offer,” concluded Steve. You can find out more about Natural Bourne Runners on its Facebook page (www.facebook.com/groups/ natural.bourne.runners) or by emailing them at naturalbournerunners@gmail.com To find out more about the work done by the Bourne and District Lions Club, go to: www.bournelions.org

Your Garden

April Gardening Tips As temperatures rise (we hope) and days lengthen, there is plenty to do on the allotment or vegetable patch: sowing, weeding and planting. However, beware as there is always a threat of night frosts and it is better to be cautious than to take a risk, as precious time will be wasted: don’t forget to cover early sowings with fleece or cloches if frosts are forecast. A major task in April is planting out potatoes. Although there is no hard and fast rule about dates, a rough guide would be; plant out first earlies around late March, second earlies early to mid-April and maincrops mid to late April. Potatoes need a sunny site, away from frost pockets – the newly emerging foliage is susceptible to frost damage in April and May and, if frosts are forecast, cover the emerging shoots with soil or fleece to protect them.

Other jobs include: • Last chance to plant onion sets and sow aubergines and tomatoes indoors for transplanting out. • Most root crops can be sown now; it is probably your last chance to sow parsnips. • Sow sweetcorn – an interesting way of germinating sweetcorn is by pre-chitting: lay the seeds on a layer of damp kitchen paper then place a layer of paper over in an airtight box. Check daily and when a small white sprout appears, plant the seed about half to an inch deep in potting compost. • Last chance to plant onion sets. • You can sow the following outdoors but under cover; beetroot, cucumbers, lettuces, turnips, oriental leaves, leeks, cabbage and salad leaves. They can be sown in pots, modules or prepared seed beds from which you can transplant them. If you do grow any seedlings in trays or modules and they have grown a couple of ‘true leaves’, prick them out and move to individual pots or larger modules. You can also harden off young plants by putting them outdoors on sunny day but bring them back in at night or put them in a cold frame or under cloches.

The traditional planting method for potatoes is to dig a trench 12cm (5in) deep and space the tubers 30cm (12in) apart for earlies and 37cm (15in) for maincrop, in rows 24in (60cm) apart for earlies and 75cm (30in) apart for maincrop. Alternatively, you can grow the potatoes under black polythene, planting the tubers through slits. The big advantage of this • Don’t forget to regularly hand weed or hoe method is that there is no need to earth up, around seedlings as the weeds appear as and the new potatoes form just below soil level they create a lot of competition for food which means there's no digging to harvest and moisture. them – they'll lie just below the sheet. • Make sure that fruit trees, canes and bushes You can sow several seeds indoors; chillies, are kept watered, as any fruit planted in peppers, celery, courgettes and summer the last 18 months is susceptible to drought squashes, runner and French beans, sprouting damage. Adding mulch around the base broccoli, Florence fennel, courgettes, summer will help. squashes and sweetcorn are • Sow maincrop peas and make the last just a few. sowing of summer broad beans. Enjoy the longer days!

Longstanding Longstaff & Co Hit the 250 Mark!

R. Longstaff & Co

are immensely proud to be celebrating two hundred and fifty years in business as Estate and Letting Agents and Chartered Surveyors. The story is a long one, involving members of the Longstaff family selling by auction in Lincolnshire for five generations. When many of the competitors who were active in the market in the late 1980s joined institutions, R Longstaff & Co retained its independence and the central theme of independence and impartial advice has remained to this day. Today the firm, who have offices in Bourne, Spalding and

Holbeach, employ twentyseven staff and operate in the residential, commercial and agricultural sectors, undertaking a wide variety of work including agency (lettings and sales), professional, valuation and auctions.

The Bourne office is now run by Kit Longstaff, who works alongside four staff. The Bourne office staff predominantly undertake residential lettings and property management work, although all other departments are covered by this office as well.

The Bourne office was opened in 2006 with the aim of extending their long-established and successful presence across South Lincolnshire.

The professionalism and experience gained over two and a half centuries is key to the service that R Longstaff & Co offer today; combined with this is the latest technology and highly trained staff, committed to the highest levels of client service.

Four years later, R Longstaff & Co were to acquire the residential lettings and management business of ‘Lyalls Lettings’, who were very active in the Bourne area, and their reputation goes from strength to strength.

CASHING IN YOUR PENSION Since pension changes in 2015, dipping into pension pots early has become increasingly popular. In September 2019, the Financial Conduct Authority reported that over 70% of pension plans accessed were accessed by the under 65s. Over 57% of these pension pots were fully withdrawn.* Before taking money from your pension pot you should consider all options and potential pitfalls.

INCOME TAX If you cash in the whole of your pension, the first 25% will normally be tax-free, with the remaining 75% added to your other income and taxed. Withdrawing lump sums from your pension could push you into a higher Income Tax bracket. Spreading withdrawals over a number of tax years could help reduce the impact of any tax liabilities.

WITHDRAWING WHILE STILL WORKING There’s a limit on the amount of pension contributions you and your employer can make if you’ve already taken a taxable withdrawal from your pension. This could mean you miss out on valuable employer pension contributions in addition to your own. The contribution cap was introduced to prevent money drawn from a pension being paid back in for additional tax relief. Your NFU Mutual Financial Adviser can provide more information.

MAXIMISING TAX BENEFITS In a pension any growth is free from UK Income Tax and Capital Gains Tax. If you take the money out simply to invest it elsewhere, you could be exposing your investments to tax.

INHERITANCE TAX (IHT) PROTECTION Pensions are normally considered to be outside your estate and are usually free of IHT. If you cash in your pension and invest the money elsewhere, you could be exposing it to IHT.

VALUABLE GUARANTEES Many pensions set up in the 1980s contain guaranteed annuity rates, meaning the pension provider guaranteed the rate they would use to convert the fund into income.

These are likely to be higher than the rates available on the market today. Get the policy checked so you can make an informed decision.

PENSION SCAMS In 2017, pension scam victims were reported to have lost an average of £91,000.** Scammers may cold call you claiming they have an unbeatable investment opportunity, which should ring alarm bells. If you are unsure about a particular company or opportunity, contact The Pensions Advisory Service for help on 0800 011 3797, or visit pensionsadvisoryservice.org.uk

LIFE EXPECTANCY UK life expectancy at birth is now 79.3 for men and 82.9 for women, meaning we’re likely to spend longer in retirement than previous generations.*** So it’s important that you don’t run out of money and have an effective financial plan in place.

YOU NEED TO KNOW The value of pensions can fall and you may get back less than you invested. The tax treatment of pensions depends on your circumstances and may change in the future.

FIND OUT MORE Speak to your local Bourne NFU Mutual agency on 01778 422218 who will put you in touch with your personal Financial Adviser. NFU Mutual Financial Advisers advise on NFU Mutual products and selected products from specialist providers. We’ll explain the advice services and charges.

Don’t be Fooled by the Rogue Traders this April – and Give Doorstep Traders the Brush Off! by Eileen Le Voi at Safe Local Trades If the effects of winter have taken their toll on your garden, property or driveway, you may be thinking about calling in the experts to inject a little life back into the space at the rear or front of the house, or the exterior itself. But whatever the job, don’t be tempted to give the work to someone who cold calls you at your home, claiming to be ‘carrying out similar work in the area’. Firstly, they have caught you unawares, just when you have returned from the school run or got home after a long day at the office, a time when you don’t really have time to think and make an informed decision. Equally as disturbing, they will target elderly or vulnerable people living alone. Secondly, any offer which appears ‘too good to be true’ often is just that! Remember: ▪ Don’t be talked into something on the spur of the moment. ▪ Don’t take their word for it when they tell you urgent work or repairs need doing. ▪ Do ask them to qualify who they are and to leave you a contact number. ▪ Never hand over any cash as a deposit for work which they say they will return to carry out. ▪ Feel free to ask to see their credentials and/or examples of their work ▪ Ask them politely to leave if you feel uncomfortable. Equally, be wary when it comes to leaflets dropping through your door; some may not be all that they seem. We know that there are many genuine companies who deliver leaflets, but there are also many scammers. The following simple rules which could give away tell-tale signs of a rogue trader: ▪ Do they say, ‘We are only in your area today’? ▪ Are they offering a reduced price for cash or having a one-time ‘special offer’? ▪ Are they trying to push you into a quick decision? Safe Local Trades is a supporter of the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Against Scams Partnership (CAPASP), which is committed to working towards stamping out scams of this kind. We also work closely with Crime Prevention Officers across the county who alert us to scam trends which we can share with our consumers and our members. COMPETITION WINNER! Young Finlay Smith has a “mum in a million”, and he’s the lucky youngster whose successful entry in last month’s competition scooped a fabulous Mother’s Day hamper. We asked you why you thought your mum is so special and Finlay told us that his mum, Sarah Smith, is beautiful and that he loves her taking him to football lessons. Well done both and many thanks to ‘Greetings of Bourne’ in the Burghley Centre for providing the hamper.

Recipe

EASTER BISCUITS Banish Easter holiday boredom by getting the kids involved in some baking! These easy biscuits are fun to decorate and yummy to eat!

Method

• Place the butter in a large mixing bowl with the caster sugar. Use a wooden spoon to beat until light and fluffy. Gradually beat in the egg until well mixed, then gradually add the flour. Use your hands to bring the mixture together to a stiff dough. Gather into a ball and chill for 30 minutes (the dough, not you!). • Heat the oven to gas 4, 180°C, fan 160°C. Roll out the dough on a work surface lightly dusted with flour until it's the thickness of a £1 coin. With an oval cutter (or a cardboard egg-shaped template), cut out egg-shaped biscuits, using the rolled out trimmings to make more. Place on baking trays and bake in the oven for six to 10 minutes, depending on size, until golden brown.

Ingredients Makes approx. 18 biscuits 200g butter (room temperature) 200g caster sugar 1 egg 400g plain flour 250g royal icing sugar Assorted food colourings

• Allow the biscuits to cool for five minutes before removing from the baking tray to cool completely. • To decorate, make up the icing as directed on the packet. Divide between bowls adding a little food colouring to each bowl. Place the mixture into piping bags and get creative with your designs – the kids may like to use sweets or sprinkles too! These biscuits will keep for between one and two weeks when stored in a sealed cake tin.

Legal Corner

SPRINGTIME LEGAL THOUGHTS WORDS FROM RICHARD WOOD

Double and Megson wish everyone a Happy Easter. At this time of the year we all think about renewal and the summertime to come. In legal terms, we might be thinking about a house move or updating our wills or perhaps whether we should have a Lasting Power of Attorney. It is advisable for us to keep our wills and associated documentation under review from time to time, and perhaps when there is an addition to the family or sadly where someone is no longer with us. As we get older, we sometimes

need help with our financial affairs and perhaps we should consider making a Lasting Power of Attorney. For couples who are unmarried, embarking on a “legal spring clean” might be useful to consider, whether we need to change how we hold our properties and potentially other assets so as to avoid any issues arising upon our death. Notwithstanding recent case law, it is still worrying that persons who are unmarried can be quite disadvantaged on the death of their partner. Sadly, there is no such thing in our legal system as a “common law husband” or

“common law wife” and so it is important that our legal affairs are in order. We are reminded that making a will allows us to be sure that those who we want to benefit from our estate upon our death will be allowed to do so, and also those who we prefer not to can be validly excluded. Double and Megson can help you with all of these matters and much more, including advice and assistance on commercial issues such as leases, family breakdown or other disputes. We look forward to being of assistance to you.

Property News

Spring has certainly sprung, as far as the property market goes, anyway! BY JASON TREADWELL, MANAGING DIRECTOR With the recent outbreak of Coronavirus, several different storms and the ongoing saga of Brexit, we are often asked how the property market is. Whilst the weather remains changeable and does not currently represent the season of spring, the property market certainly is showing that we are in the prime time of year for home moving.

Here at Newton Fallowell, we are also celebrating! We have been shortlisted once again for an award at this year’s ESTAS – a national award scheme recognising the very best in the industry. Having won gold at last year’s British Property Awards, we have our fingers crossed for May, where the ESTAS awards are decided.

March has continued in the same manner as the previous two months, with home sellers planning ahead for summer moving. More and more homes are coming to the market, with some recent sunny days proving useful for external photographs.

The ESTAS are distinguished from any other property awards due to their rating system. Whilst the British Property Awards are awarded following a rigorous mystery-shopping system, the ESTAS are awarded based on honest reviews and ratings from clients, who have dealt with the office. Tenants, buyers, landlords and sellers vote in all different categories, from communication and transparency, to first impressions and whether they would recommend.

With spring comes Easter, a time of year to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ for those who are religious, or chocolate eating for those who aren’t! We also benefit from the bank holiday weekend, which is historically a tremendous time for homes to be on the market, with a high number of potential buyers on the lookout for their next home.

Whilst the market is so positive, we must not overlook the current Coronavirus scare, which we echo must be taken seriously. We hope that this does not impact the property market in 2020, as it looks set to be a fantastic year for the Bourne area; however, we do anticipate that this may well occur. We have experienced viewers cancelling viewings due to the scare, as well as some viewers being very cautious, should they not feel well. We encourage all those considering moving to take the virus seriously, to ensure we do everything we can to stop the spread. On a happier note, if you are looking to explore a move in spring, or have any questions regarding the property market, then please do not hesitate to contact the team on 01778 422567.

Does Your Lawn Need Help?

I

s your lawn a lovely green piece of perfection or is it suffering with lots of weed and unsightly dead patches in it?

Either way, help and advice is on hand from Simon and Gale who run our local GreenThumb lawn treatment service. Their top tips for helping us look after our lawns as we enter spring are: ■ Keep mowing – on a fine day give it a cut on a high setting. Long and wet lawns will always encourage moss. ■ Let in the light – cut back over-hanging bushes that deprive the grass of essential sunlight and good air flow. Pick up rotting leaves and brush off worm casts. ■ Rake or scarify out dead grass – unsightly dead brown patches won’t miraculously turn green so while the lawn is dormant rake out as much dead matter as you can ready for seeding in spring. We can help!

■ Aerate your lawn – using a fork, spiker or aerator, now is the perfect time to sort compacted ground and improve drainage. It's energetic work so if you don’t want to do it yourself call GreenThumb! ■ Sort those weeds – it's best to tackle these in the spring when the weather conditions are right. We’re the people to help! Simon and Gale offer a FREE visit where they carry out a full analysis of your lawn and give advice. Treatments are based on lawn size and start from as little as £15 four times a year.

School News THURLBY COMMUNITY PRIMARY ACADEMY Thurlby Community Primary Academy had a wonderful day recently, celebrating our School Games Day whilst raising money for Sport Relief. The children participated in a variety of physical activities such as hurdles, javelin throwing, team challenge games and an inflatable obstacle course -this was a favourite with the children! The School Sports Ambassadors did a fantastic job helping with the

activities whilst looking out for those pupils who demonstrated the School Games values of determination, honesty, passion, self-belief, teamwork and respect. Our PE co-ordinator, Mrs Jayne Sewell, worked extremely hard to plan and co-ordinate such an invigorating, fun-filled day. Thank you to our parents and children for helping raise lots of money for Sports Relief.

Advice

Looking For a New Challenge with Citizens Advice? Citizens Advice South Lincolnshire is issuing a call-out for people interested in becoming a volunteer in and around Bourne and Market Deeping. The organisation is heavily dependent on volunteers to provide the service they make up over 80% of the people working there. Over the past few years, the variety of roles available has expanded considerably, and now there are eight different roles available, including people to work in reception, as an adviser, in research and campaigns, and as an administrator. There are also several ways in which clients can access the service, with e-mail, webchat and telephone channels available, in addition to the traditional face-to-face service. Volunteers need to be able to commit to six hours per week, and to be flexible as to where they work – they could be based in the main office in Stamford, or in the outreaches in Bourne and Market Deeping. The six hours per week may be on different days and in different locations. A description of all roles is given on the volunteer section of the Citizens Advice South Lincolnshire website www.citizensadvicesouthlincs.org.uk. “Of course, we always need new advisors to come through our training process,” said Megan Millar, Training Officer, “ but we mustn’t forget the positions behind the scenes, the hidden roles, that are vital to enable the smooth running of the service in our main offices, outreaches, and on telephone and e-mail. If anyone is able to volunteer for six hours a week, and is interested in getting involved in any roles, we would be delighted to hear from them, either by contacting me on trainingofficer@citizendsadvicesouthlincs.org.uk ; or by filling in the enquiry form on our website.” 42

D I S C O V E R I N G

Bourne

Interviews will be held before the end of March, and training could start at the end of March, or early summer, depending on people’s availability. Volunteers can gain ‘on the job’ experience very quickly, by shadowing experienced volunteers. “People are surprised when they hear about the range of volunteer roles available,” said Megan, “and we can always find a role that is suitable for each individual’s range of skills and experience.” For further information please look on the website www.citizensadvicesouthlincs.org.uk or contact trainingofficer@citizensadvicesouthlincs.org.uk. NB. Due to the Coronavirus epidemic, outreach branches are closed as of March 18th. It is envisaged that the “Access to Cash” survey will be available online at www. citizensadvicesouthlincs.org.uk.

Your Finances

Keep Calm and Carry On BY MATTHEW BIGGS - LIBERTY PARTNERSHIP LTD

If there’s something that we Brits do well it’s staying calm when things start to get a bit choppy. And I think it’s fair to say, with the outbreak of Coronavirus, we are in very choppy times! I’m sure most of you who are reading this will have seen the negative impact Coronavirus has had on the world economy and, subsequently, the uncertainty seen in the global stock markets. It would be very easy to panic and assume the ‘worst-case scenario’, which often leads to irrational and bad decisions being made. However, I want to take this opportunity to offer you all a little reassurance and perspective.

44

D I S C O V E R I N G

As the United States of America is currently the world’s largest economy and thus directly affects us all, let’s look at the impact the Coronavirus is having on their main stock index, the Dow Jones, and how this compares to previous periods of uncertainty. At the time of writing this article, the Dow Jones has fallen from its record high level of 29,551.22 at February 12th 2020 to 23,553.22 on March 12th 2020. This fall represents a 20.30% drop which, there is no denying, is a large drop in a short space of time. Let’s now look at how the Dow Jones reacted during the 2008/2009 financial crisis. Between

Bourne

October 1st 2007 and March 5th 2009, the Dow Jones fell from 14,087.55 to 6,594.44, which represents a drop of 53.19%. So why is this relevant? Well, from the Dow Jones low at the beginning of 2008/2009 to the start of February 2020, it had increased by 22,788.13 or 186.67%. All of this tells us one thing … we’ve been here before! Yes, it’s not very pleasant, but there is light at the end of the tunnel. We firmly believe we will, just like in 2008/2009, recover from this position and it’s simply a case of “when” and not “if”. So, let’s do what we do best - keep calm and carry on!

School News MUSICAL SUCCESS FOR “VERY PROFESSIONAL” BOURNE WESTFIELD YOUNGSTERS Bourne Westfield is celebrating its recent musical success at the Round Table ‘Young Musician of the Year’ competition. This year, Bourne Westfield Primary Academy was delighted to partner the Rotary Club to hold the first round of the competition at the school. The event was a huge success, and children from schools around Bourne came together to perform and compete for a place at the regional and district finals. The school’s Key Stage 2 choir, along with pianist, Emma Lomas, progressed through to the regional festival stage and performed at the district finals, held at Leicester Grammar School, on Sunday March 1st. Emma played two contrasting pieces and in the adjudication was praised for her “great technique”; her playing demonstrated the “foundation of a really serious pianist and musician – one to watch”. The Key Stage 2 choir sang ‘Titanium’ by David

Guetta and ‘Hit the Road Jack’ by Percy Mayfield. The adjudicators commented, “Very professional, wow, solid sound, and so together”. The choir were commended for their “confident and assured harmony” which was judged as “first class”, along with their “tip-top stagecraft”. Emma Lomas was awarded best junior solo instrumentalist and best solo instrumentalist of the day, and the choir won their class along with best junior entry of the day. Rebecca Beavis, Arts Director at Bourne Westfield Primary Academy, commented, “I am so proud of our young musicians, who have worked so hard to ensure that they gave a polished and professional performance.” Kate Atkinson, Head of School, added, “Music is an incredibly important part of school life and we work hard to ensure that our children have the opportunity to become the very best musicians they can be. It is important to get external feedback and always lovely to receive such positive praise for our work.”

BASTON CE PRIMARY SCHOOL Our Eco Group have been working hard over the past twelve months and were visited by a Green Flag inspector in November. The Group have done regular litter picks in the local community; monitored our electricity usage following the installation of our solar panels; and have promoted healthy living across the whole school. We are delighted to report that we passed the inspection and are now extremely proud owners of a ‘Green Flag!’

Our Year 6 pupils attended a Construction Day in Stamford in November where they learnt a variety of skills within the construction industries. On the last day of term, Steve Taylor, the organiser of the event, visited our school to present them with a trophy for being the ‘Best School’ at the event. 48

An Important Appeal

Save our Village Churches... Please! (Revd. Neil Bullen, Rector of The Ringstone-in-Aveland Group.)

C

hurches stand at the heart of most village communities, both physically, as often imposing buildings, but also in terms of village identity. These are the places that people look to for christenings, weddings and funerals and where they turn in times of trouble, whether they worship there or not. Often, after moving away, people return to their village church to marry or have their children christened. Many people describe the church as being important to village life and rightly so. Anyone who lives in a parish has the right to be christened, to marry (subject to certain rules of qualification) and to have their funeral service in the parish church. These really are YOUR churches. But churches do not receive government or central funding; we are reliant on donations from those in our communities, and fees from weddings and funerals. Usually, we just about get by on these but when major problems arise, we need to look further afield for funding.

There are five parishes in the Ringstone-inAveland Group, north of Bourne: All Saints, Dunsby; St Andrew, Haconby; St Mary and All Saints, Kirkby Underwood; St. John the Baptist, Morton; and St Andrew, Rippingale. Four of the five churches in the group currently have major building expenses to fund. Dunsby and Haconby churches had the roofing lead stolen last year, leaving repair costs of approximately £20,000 and £72,000 respectively. When it rains, water pours through the roof at Haconby, affecting services, weddings, funerals and baptisms, and this now threatens the organ and the integrity of the roof structure itself. This will hugely increase the costs of repair, if not addressed very soon.

50

D I S C O V E R I N G

Bourne

Morton church has just replaced the boiler at a cost of £20,000, essential to offer a warm and comfortable place for all the occasions already mentioned. We also have an issue with a leaking tower roof (costs of which are, as yet, unknown). Rippingale church currently has a temporary outer roof on the chancel, but this will only last a few more months. The cost of this repair is approximately £57,000. There is an expectation that these churches will always be there and available to our communities, but there is a real danger of these buildings becoming unusable if they cannot be well maintained. We need to raise significant funds for repairs. We have applied for grants, but they require us to make a significant contribution towards the costs. If you could consider making a financial contribution toward the repairs of YOUR parish church, please contact our administrator, Sue, on ringstoneoffice@gmail.com.

ast month, we followed the gruelling experiences of London teenager, Doris Streatfield, as she spent time during World War Two, billeted in Hanthorpe, near Morton, and working as a Land Army girl in Kirkby Underwood. This month, read how Doris decides to move away to pastures (or rather, forests), new. “After eighteen months in Lincolnshire, Doris and two friends decided to transfer to the newly formed Women’s Timber Corps*. They were not popular: it seemed to cause all sorts of bureaucratic problems, but in the end, ‘We swapped our pork pie hat for a green beret and a brown badge and we thought we were the cat’s whiskers!’ The three considered themselves to be old hands at the job by now, but they were sent off to Wetherby (Yorkshire) for their month’s training anyway. Their first posting was to a Gloucestershire sawmill. ‘Goodness me! We were dropped off in the middle of a common, really isolated this time, with just two cottages – one of them was our billet.’ The sawmill was manned by Spanish prisoners-of-war in the charge of New Zealanders. The girls found cordwood for the charcoal kilns alongside the sawmill; they measured trees and marked them up so that the prisoners could saw them up into railway sleepers; and they rode with the men on the lorry taking timber to a match-making company in Gloucester, (quite possibly S.J. Moreland and Sons, manufacturers of ‘England’s Glory’ matches – Ed.) In the end, town-bred Doris survived all that the woods threw at her and she stayed ‘in the Timber’ for four years. Doris was later to live in Bracebridge Heath, Lincoln and concluded,

‘It was really a great experience and although we had some rough times, we also had some good times. I wouldn’t have missed it for anything’.” A P RI L 2 0 2 0

* The Women’s Timber Corps (WTC) was a British civilian organisation, created during the Second World War to work in forestry, replacing men who had left to join the armed forces. Women who joined the WTC were commonly known as “Lumber Jills”. Never as large as the Women’s Land Army, the WTC did have a maximum strength of over 6,000 working throughout the United Kingdom. The Corps was a mobile organisation, so the workers could be posted anywhere. The work of the WTC included all the jobs involved with forestry, including felling, snedding, (the process of stripping the side shoots and buds from the length of a branch), loading, crosscutting, driving tractors and trucks, working with horses and operating sawmills. Pay ranged from 35 to 46 shillings (£1.75 - £2.30) per week! On October 21st, 2014, a memorial statue to both the Women’s Land Army and the Women’s Timber Corps was formally unveiled at the National Memorial Arboretum in Alrewas, Staffordshire. History

The Heritage Centre in Bourne

(by our local correspondent)

Y

ou may have noticed an old stone building on your left, just before the Memorial Gardens, as you queue for the traffic lights in South Street. It is Baldock’s Mill, the depository of much of Bourne’s very interesting past. It is run by Bourne Civic Society, or more accurately, Jim and Brenda Jones, who put in hours of dedicated service to keep it going. The building itself is of interest, the last remaining water mill of three that used to operate in the town. It is over two hundred years old, mentioned in the Domesday Book, grade two listed, and was a working mill until the 1920s, and named after the last miller. It fell into disrepair and was in a sorry state when the Civic Society took it over in 1983, but years of hard work by a small team of volunteers saw it open in 1999. This included the design and manufacture of two new wheels, the main wheel being fifteen feet in diameter, with a smaller wheel that would have powered a winch. It now provides about 8kw of electricity to the National Grid, which takes care of the mill’s electricity needs - carbon neutral and very 21st century! Inside can be found not only books, pamphlets and photographs for sale but also a wide range of artefacts and curiosities, including old bottles and tools and a mammoth’s tooth. On the first floor is an exhibition 58

devoted to Charles Worth, who was born in Wake House on Bourne’s North Street, and who went on to found the famous Parisian fashion house in the nineteenth century. He not only produced and set trends in haute couture, but also branched out into boots and shoes, perfumery, and even furniture. The “Worth” brand can still be found at perfume counters today. Down a few steps is a room dedicated to motor sport, particularly the life of Raymond Mays. Many photographs and written reports line one wall, whilst another wall is devoted to the history of the B.R.M marque, and there are glass cabinets full of gleaming silver trophies from all over the world. There is so much to see that it is difficult to take it all in. On the top floor there are displays of Bourne’s railway past; photographs, equipment, maps and so forth. Bourne station was an important hub with lines converging and going off in all directions. There are stories about Bourne’s wartime heroes, the spring water industry, displays of domestic equipment from the past, and much more. Baldock’s Mill is well worth a visit … or two or three! It is open at weekends from 2pm to 4pm. For more information go to www.bournecivicsociety.org.uk. A P R IL 2 0 2 0

There is a new test used for fuel consumption and CO2 figures (known as WLTP). The CO2 figures shown however, are based on a calculation designed to be equivalent to the outgoing (NEDC) test cycle and will be used to calculate vehicle tax on first registration. The range of figures stated covers the entire Volkswagen Golf model range including all-electric, hybrid and petrol/diesel vehicles. All-electric vehicles are zero emissions while driving. Hybrid vehicle figures were obtained using a combination of battery power and fuel. For more information, please see www.volkswagen.co.uk/owners/wltp or consult your retailer. Data correct at 12/19. WE CRACKED YOUR MOVE We’re branching out in 2020! THIS SPRING!

Newton Fallowell are celebrating the new decade and doing our bit for climate change by planting a brand new tree every single time we sell a property! And with our record for house sales that means a whole forest of trees will be putting down roots for future generations to enjoy.
