Introduction
Welcome to Your May Issue. Welcome to this on-line version of your favourite community lifestyle magazine. Few of us will have lived through such a period as this, responding to the lethal Covid-19 pandemic, and having to adapt our lives to new, and at times very challenging, routines, in order to keep ourselves and others virus-free. As with anything though, a positive attitude is worth its weight in gold and much of what our regular contributors are including for you here in their articles seems to bear this out. On a personal note, I feel fortunate in that our family is together, our dog (and yours truly!) are getting more exercise than ever before, and our spirits remain high, (unlike the levels in some of our bottles!) Keep healthy, stay safe and let’s look forward to happier times ahead.

Being an optimist makes me confident that much good will result from the present unnatural lives we’re all having to live. The First World War and indeed the Second World War too, are held up as examples of how our society can come together, pull in the same direction and reap rewards from co-operation rather than conflict. Amidst all the Covid-19 coverage over the last month, let it not be forgotten that we were all about to commemorate the 75th anniversary of VE Day over the weekend of May 8th – 10th with celebratory parties and parades. Unfortunately, the gatherings will not be possible, but I’m sure there will be sufficient reminders and blanket coverage across the media to compensate for that. Look out for everyone’s favourite “garden rollator king”, Captain Tom Moore, joining Dame Vera Lynn, (now 103 years old) to entertain us. The sprightly songstress has already paired up with Katherine Jenkins to release “We’ll Meet Again” to raise funds for the NHS! If you’ve not already seen the inimitable Max Boyce and his rendition of “When Just the Tide Went Out”, (available on You Tube) I can recommend this very poignant reminder that something beautiful can indeed come out of such an unnerving situation like the one were living through at the moment. Enjoy the read and let’s hope for some resolution to this crisis before too long.

Staying Home and Staying Healthy BY CLAIRE GRAY, RENU - HEALTH, BEAUTY & FITNESS
S
taying home this much certainly takes some getting used to! Just weeks ago, many of us were on the go, rushing from place to place from dawn till dusk. Now many of us are having to learn to slow down a little. While we adjust to these temporary changes, it is important to incorporate some of our old lives into the new. We need to look after ourselves and stay healthy. Eating well, keeping up with exercise and keeping our minds active will make a big difference to how we feel as the days go by.
TIPS TO STAY ACTIVE It might not be possible to exercise the way you are used to, but it is so important to keep moving! Exercise improves blood flow and memory, and stimulates chemical changes that enhance your mood. The good news is there are plenty of ways to stay active, while keeping social distancing and isolation requirements.
1
Join an online class.
So many gyms, Pilates, yoga and dance studios have gone on-line and some are video links or live classes. You can also often access the live classes after the event, to do them in your own time in your own home. It’s a great chance to try something new, safely interact with other people outside your isolation boundaries, and fit things in at a time to suit you. Get your friends involved too so you can share the experience … the more the merrier!
2
Exercising
This is one of the reasons we are currently allowed out and about, so make sure you get out in the fresh air and go for a walk. The fresh air and change of scenery will do wonders for your body and mind. Just thirty minutes of walking every day can increase cardiovascular fitness, strengthen bones, reduce excess body fat and boost muscle power and endurance. The best part is … it’s free !
It’s a great chance to try something new!

3
Get the whole family involved
Exercise is often more fun when you do it with others, so if you can get everyone in your house involved you may be able to stay motivated for longer. Go for a family bike ride or walk around the block. For those of you that are more competitive, start a family fitness challenge and encourage each other to keep moving! Click here for Claire’s Lockdown Survival Package and on-line Pilates and Yoga Classes : www.clairegrayfitnesssolutions.co.uk.
TIPS FOR LOOKING AFTER YOURSELF Whether you are working from home, not currently able to work, or at home with little ones trying to home school, the chances are that things can be a bit of a challenge. The situation may not be ideal and may even be causing a bit of stress or tension. Ensure you are looking after yourself and taking some time out to reset and recharge. It’s also important not to feel alone, so reach out to friends and family when you need some support, so we can all be in this together.
1
Make sure you schedule some time in the day to do something you enjoy. Whether it be reading a book, watching your favourite movie, knitting or crafting, make sure you find the time. It’s important to have little things to look forward to and relax from
other essential tasks that may not be as enjoyable.
2
Phone a friend. It’s so important to stay connected and feel that you are not alone. Reaching out to friends and family is vital to your well-being. We might not be able to grab a coffee with our bestie or go for drinks after work with our friends, but there are lots of ways of staying in touch. Apps such as ZOOM, Whatsapp and Facetime give you an opportunity to speak face-to-face. It may not be the real deal, but sharing your feelings or just having a good laugh can warm the soul.
3
Book in some activities. Normally have book club once a month? Book it in with a group video chat. Not in a book club? Great time to start one. Missing your monthly facial, manicure or pedicure? Schedule it in and do one at home. There are some great online tutorials where you can pick up some great tips!
4
Eat well! As tempting as it may be to reach for that packet of crisps, bar of chocolate or ice-cream, try to resist as much as you can. To make things a little easier, fill your cupboards with as many healthy snacks as possible to limit the temptation and provide some good alternatives to snacking. Nuts, fruits, healthy dips and cut-up vegetable sticks are great to have on hand for when hunger (or boredom) strikes.
Most of all STAY SAFE – STAY HOME – and help us all PROTECT THE NHS.

CLASSSIC CAR AND MOTORCYCLE CARNIVAL CANCELLED
PETERBOROUGH CATHEDRAL POSTPONES DINOSAUR EXHIBITION
A message from Bourne Events Team.
T. rex: The Killer Question, the Natural History Museum’s touring exhibition, due to be shown at Peterborough Cathedral in July and August 2020, has been postponed until summer 2021. The exhibition will now be at the Cathedral from Monday July 19th to Monday August 30th 2021.
It was a decision that Bourne Events Team really did not want to make but, for very obvious reasons, it was one that became inevitable, and so we had to cancel this year’s Classic Car and Motorcycle Carnival, scheduled for Sunday June 21st. However, we will be bringing this event back to Bourne next year as it has become one of the most successful and eagerly anticipated events in Bourne’s calendar. It generates interest for the whole town and attracts visitors from all over the area. Celebrating Bourne’s motoring heritage, the Carnival has also developed into a well-rounded, market carnival with something for everyone including amazing live performances. We give all our best wishes for everyone during these very challenging times but know that Bourne will ‘deal with it’! As a team, we will look forward to working on future events for Bourne.
IMPORTANT NOTICE FROM CHRIS BODEN, LEADER OF FENLAND DISTRICT COUNCIL The CPCA COVID-19 business capital grant scheme provides 80% grants for capital expenditure from £2,600 to £62,500, and 50% from £62,500 to £300,000. As of April 16th, the scheme’s website has not yet been updated with the Mayor’s announcement this week that the scheme is being opened up to sole traders and that a further £3,000,000 is being added to the pot. The Cathedral is getting in touch directly with anyone who has booked tickets for the exhibition. Bookings will be moved to the equivalent date in 2021, thus protecting customers from any potential price increase. Alternatively, they can request a refund or, if they are cancelling their booking, consider donating their ticket money to the Cathedral to help to offset the significant fall in income as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. top stress, anxiety and panic attacks and improve your immune system. Extraordinary times are upon us and at The Beardwood Practice we are doing things differently – on-line Solution Focused Hypnotherapy. Hypnotherapy can be delivered to you live on on-line platforms of Skype and Zoom from the comfort and safety of your own home, anywhere in the world. Stress, anxiety and panic attacks can build up over a long period of time without us even realising it, or it can come on suddenly as a result of something such as illness or a change of circumstances, for instance. Some people who have been fully in control of their lives suddenly find they can’t cope in their daily life.
Bounce Back Regardless!
Anxiety and stress can manifest itself in many ways: nervousness; panic attacks; insomnia; overly worrying about something that may never happen, etc. It can have a crippling effect by bringing on a range of symptoms such as a dampened immune system; depression; Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS); skin complaints; negative patterns such as overeating, drinking, smoking etc; or even relationship problems. If allowed to remain unaddressed, stress and anxiety can change lives for the worst.
Remaining calm even in these challenging times will improve the effectiveness of the immune system and create a healthier you.
The good news is that Solution Focused Hypnotherapy has been shown to be a very effective treatment for panic attacks, reducing the frequency in a short period of time, or sustained treatment will often result in them disappearing altogether. Hypnotherapy reduces underlying levels of anxiety, giving you greater control and reducing the emotional arousal. Hypnotherapy works with the subconscious brain templates and makes suggestions in a beneficial and positive way to make positive changes happen in the subconscious.
Hypnotherapy allows guided relaxation showing a preferred future, and because the subconscious part of the brain, (the part that’s in charge of our reactions), doesn’t understand the difference between imagination and reality, the guided relaxation starts to bring calm and control back into our lives.
You will learn how to prevent negative stress, how to identify increased levels of stress, and how to deal with the situation and how to prevent it reaching debilitating levels in a positive and responsible way. Whatever the cause of stress, anxiety or panic attacks the treatment is tailored to the individual.
“Regain your health, wealth and wellbeing!”

Major Milestone Reached! An update from Warner’s, one of Bourne’s leading employers.
L
ike everyone else in these strange and uncertain times, we have found the world as we know it, has changed very quickly. For many of us, it can seem like quite a slog to find any positives in such a situation. At Warner’s however, we are fortunate indeed that we can draw upon a few “wins” outside of the commercial world. We can now announce, for example, that last year we reached a massive milestone in our environmental efforts. Between 2014 and 2019, we managed to reduce our carbon footprint as a business by more than half! part of our family-run ethos.
This is a fantastic achievement that we are truly proud of and it is important for all of us to periodically stop and reflect on how far we have come. This was a massive boost to read about and is an excellent platform upon which to keep building.
We are also delighted with how our newest machine is performing at this difficult time. You may have seen in the Bourne Local and Stamford Mercury that a few months ago we had our new factory officially opened by the Lord Lieutenant of Lincolnshire.
We have made enormous strides as a company to minimise our impact on the environment over the decades. As part of our ever-ongoing efforts, we have undertaken many initiatives and practices as
The efficiencies that the new press allows us to reach are invaluable at times like this. We have been able to retire one of our older, less efficient presses whilst improving our production statistics and capacity. We are very proud that no other company in our sector invests in as much new equipment as we do, and this has certainly contributed to our professional edge! We are looking forward to seeing some green shoots appearing in the not-too-distant future and a return to normality. May Gardening Tips
W
hat strange times we are living through at the moment and, with the lockdown in operation, we need to keep fit both in mind and body. What better way than to enjoy your garden, either by working in it or sitting with a cuppa (and cake!) or glass of something a little stronger, admiring your hard work? Much research has been carried out into the health and well-being benefits of gardening, the garden and green spaces. Conclusive evidence shows that our general physical and mental health are improved and the benefits of being in the garden run much deeper than just exercise. A King’s Fund report on the health benefits of gardening found that they were broad and diverse, with research showing significant reductions in depression and anxiety and improved social functioning. Gardening can also help maintain independence and prevent cognitive decline. Gardeners might also be delighted to learn that the number of calories burnt from thirty minutes of gardening is comparable to playing badminton, volleyball or practising yoga! At the time of writing the weather has been amazing, I can’t remember having such a warm and sunny April and yet I have looked at records from the past few years and on a number of occasions it has been “the hottest Easter on record!” However, we do seem to have been blessed with some particularly good April weather and as many of us are at home there is plenty of time to spend in the garden or at the allotment, let’s hope it continues. The only problem is how do we get plants etc if the garden centres are closed? I have bought seeds and some summer bulbs from the supermarket, although some of them are in short supply, and Waterside Garden Centre are taking orders online – I received a delivery of compost within a few days of ordering. There are other

companies still functioning online but stocks are low and some delivery times long, try www.gardeningexpress.co.uk or www.directseeds.co.uk I know that because we now have the time a lot of people, who do not normally grow their own, are trying their hand at growing their own produce and flowers from seeds. I took an idea from Adam Frost on Gardener’s World and planted rocket seeds in a spare disposable aluminium turkey tray that I did not use at Christmas. This started me off on a mission for any old containers I could use for growing; I found broken plastic boxes, small wooden crates etc – so long as there is sufficient drainage you can use anything – and now I have an array of ‘junk’ in a corner of the garden. You can also intersperse vegetable plants in your mixed border. For those who do have vegetable plots or allotments, May is a very busy time and a difficult month to judge as the weather can vary: we sometimes get lulled into a false sense of security and think that summer has arrived, but watch the weather in case of late frosts and protect any tender seedlings. Also take care to harden off plants that have been grown indoors or under cover before planting. A cheap way to protect tender young plants is to use ‘bottle cloches’. Cut down the two litre plastic drinks bottles; they are useful for protecting young runner beans and peas. Some of us only set aside a small plot for growing fruit and vegetables so to maximise your space you can try: • Intercropping – sowing two crops in the same row, one slow and one fast growing. Fast growing crops include Oriental salad leaves, lettuces, radishes, spring onions, spinach and spring-planted shallots. Slow growers are parsnips, sweetcorn, tomatoes, leeks, winter cabbage, cauliflower, sprouting broccoli and Brussels sprouts.
MAY 2020
Your Garden
• Catch Cropping – sowing a fast- growing crop in the brief period a plot might be empty. Also, with the warmer weather come the pests! To get rid of aphids try these suggestions: • Stir together one quart of water, one tsp of washing-up liquid and a pinch of cayenne pepper. • Peppermint, spearmint and pennyroyal naturally deter aphids and ants, so plant (or put them in pots) throughout the plot. • Plant flowers that attract the pest predators such as marigold and nasturtiums. Black fly is a real pest on broad beans and nipping off the growing buds help or a quick blast with a hose or try one of the tips above. Jobs to do this month include: • Earth up potatoes. • Cover carrots with netting to stop carrot fly damage. • Harden off and plant out vegetables sown earlier. • Pot on growing plants. • Put up bean and pea supports. • Pick flowers off new strawberries to prevent them cropping in their first year. • When watering young plants and seedlings, it is better to water less frequently but more thoroughly as this gets down to the roots. If you water lightly it may only wet the surface of the soil and the roots may be encouraged to stay near the surface where they are more likely to suffer from drought damage. • Seeds to sow out this month are too numerous for me to list but a few include carrots, beetroot, French beans, lettuce, spring onions, salad leaves and peas. • Try ‘succession sowing’ a small batch of seeds every two or three weeks and you should have a steady supply rather than a glut: it will also help to maximise your chances of successful germination. • Indoors you can sow chillies, courgettes and squashes, runner beans, sweetcorn, aubergines and cabbages. Let’s hope for some good weather for growing and planting – enjoy!

We’ve teamed up with AIG to bring you a wide range of protection cover to help give you peace of mind should the worst ever happen. So customers can rest assured they will have financial support when they need it most.
SUE AND MARTIN’S STORY When Sue Ansell became critically ill, it was a tough time for the whole family. Husband Martin, pensions expert at NFU Mutual, explains why having protection cover was vital. “Around 25 years ago, Sue and I were moving to another house, so we increased our mortgage to £72,000. “We were asked if we would like to protect ourselves, not just in the event of dying, but also in the event of a critical illness. We thought it unlikely that both of us would ever have a critical illness at the same time so we decided to do half, £36,000 as this would cover half of the mortgage should anything happen. “Sometime later, Sue began to feel unwell. She would lose the ability to speak or understand people — just for a minute or two. We had it investigated, and the hospital told us it was a tumour in the brain, and it would kill her unless we allowed the doctors to operate. At the time, you’re facing the uncertainty of the tumour, the operation, the children — the last thing you want, on top of all that, is to have financial worry. “Luckily, the critical illness cover did exactly what it said on the tin. It gave us a lump sum that allowed us to rely on one income rather than the two.
“The pressure of the mortgage was eased and it took away such a great part of the worries we faced. “Thankfully Sue has made a recovery. She is able to live her life and do the things that really matter, like seeing her kids grow up. “You can’t insure against emotional problems but you can insure against financial ones. Do what you can afford and review it regularly.”
YOU NEED TO KNOW Critical illness cover provides protection for illnesses and conditions specified in the policy. NFU Mutual Financial Advisers advise on AIG Life protection products.

“Business as Usual”? SureMove Think Not!
I
s it really business as usual? I keep hearing this, but I don’t believe it! I think transferring an office of twenty-two people to their individual homes for six weeks is far from “business as usual”. As a firm, we have always been able to work at home; we use case management in the cloud, and electronic files, so we were already 95% there, but working at home for a day here and there really isn’t the same as having no physical contact with the office for six weeks. I miss the multiscanner/copier! Oh, and actual real people too!
Plus, we are relying on ‘thirdparties’. Two weeks ago, a member of our staff was on hold to Barclays for almost seven hours, trying to get the release of mortgage funds for a client who was packed up and ready to move that day. Our perseverance paid off though, and the client got their keys at 4.30pm! Barclays had closed their Indian call centres that day, which had left only a handful of staff in the U.K. We also rely on other ‘thirdparties’, such as the Land Registry and Local Authorities for searches; some are open, some are closed, some are ‘working from home’.
We usually have our assistants sitting next to us, but they are now miles away. We use electronic files, but still have a paper file with deeds and documents. On March 20th, we closed the office, loaded several hundred files into our cars and off we went, taking over kitchen tables, dressing tables and even bringing garden furniture inside. The office looks like it’s been burgled and the stationery cupboard emptier than Tesco’s loo roll shelf! But it’s not all doom and gloom! After settling in, we are into a rhythm and are fully operational, working from home. We are all working extremely hard to get those people moved, that can, and others to the point of exchange, ready for when the lockdown restrictions are lifted. We can only complete on unoccupied properties during lockdown, but can progress occupied properties to the point of exchange of contracts. In fact, we completed thirtyfive transactions during the first week of lockdown, thirty in week two, and are still taking on new business. We are doing Zoom meetings with clients; holding

our usual staff team meeting on a Wednesday morning; using an app. downloaded to clients’ smartphones to verify their ID; using an e-mail link for clients to pay for searches; using ‘MyLegalSpace’ for clients to communicate securely and track their milestones; and we are now using ‘AdobeSign’ for clients to sign contracts electronically. Our phone system works on the cloud, so it is easy to access from pcs at home and we now all have wireless headphones, just like in the office. I am so proud of SureMove and that we are doing the best job possible for our clients, but “business as usual”? … I don’t think so!
Good news !!! Suremove Property Logbook I have seen a lot of advice lately from estate agents to prospective vendors, who are desperate, but unable, to market their property due to Covid-19 restrictions; suggestions to decorate and declutter their homes etc. But what about getting paperwork in order and getting legally “sale-ready”? We have been looking to develop this over the last few months, but with the current conditions, we are now rolling it out quicker than anticipated. When the current restrictions are lifted and consumers begin marketing their properties for sale, everyone’s priority will be to achieve exchange and completion as quickly as possible; consumers will be fed-up with waiting to move and will expect, and demand, speed and efficiency. The government have been looking at this for some time and are developing the BASPI (Buyer and Seller Property Information). MAY 2020
In fact, there was a good article from Property Wire recently: https://www.propertywire.com/ blog/home-sellers-can-stillmake-progress-under-lockdown/ https://www.legalfutures.co.uk/ latest-news/single-source-ofproperty-truth-to-be-piloted-withinweeks.
and highlight anything that is missing or needs actioning. •
The agent and prospective buyers can then view the documents.
•
We will also deal with ID requirements at this stage and get clients to complete the property information and, basically, get them “legally sale-ready”. The government’s research indicates that this could shave three to four weeks off the conveyancing process.
‘We are all working extremely hard to get those people moved, that can, and others to the point of exchange’ So, it’s not our idea; the government have already done the research, but it could be years before it’s launched. However, we are jumping in and offering it now.
What are the benefits? •
It puts the seller in the best possible position to sell their property.
•
It uses the time to get everything (legally) in place whilst the property is on the market, rather than when you find a buyer.
•
It gets you “sale-ready” quicker and there is less likelihood of the sale dropping through.
•
It is more likely to save you money.
•
Think of it like selling a car – the vehicle that has a full service history and AA check will be more attractive than a car without.
What happens? •
•
Clients will upload all their documents to the Property Logbook (guarantees, planning permissions, building regulations, gas, electrical certificates, etc, etc). SureMove will then upload registers of title, plan, Land Registry documents (i.e. a copy of “the deeds”) which we will obtain from the Land Registry. This is the good bit … we will then “check and validate” the documents

Covid-19 Property Market Update BY JASON TREADWELL, MANAGING DIRECTOR

uring these unprecedented times, normality seems to have become a lot different than we are all used to. Whilst working from home is normal for some, for those successful estate agents it certainly is not; however it is something we have had to become accustomed to. Whilst we are still able to communicate with clients from home, it is much more difficult to create new sales and put new properties to the market, whilst abiding by social distancing guidelines. However, it is still possible and the market is still moving! Viewings have turned virtual, with many of our properties benefiting from Virtual Viewings, guiding buyers around a home with audio and narration. We have also been able to arrange three-way video viewings, with a member of our team and the potential purchaser in attendance, whilst the seller of the home shows us all round. We have been contacted by many people, considering a move when we return to normality. We have been able to carry out valuations for these clients via phone and video call, with potential home sellers showing us round their homes, with our team providing
a valuation using comparable evidence. We also have many clients, who had already begun proceedings with their sale/purchase, which remains ongoing. We are pleased to say that these sales are still being progressed, with most solicitors also working from home. Where possible, with all clients willing and able to do so, exchanges and completions have still been taking place, with solicitors aiming to do so simultaneously. It is still possible to gain a new mortgage, as well as a fantastic time to explore re-mortgaging, therefore our Senior Mortgage & Protection Adviser, Matthew Hines has been very busy. We have been inundated with questions from ‘Will my mortgage offer be automatically extended?’ to ‘Are mortgage lenders still lending?’ with Matthew being on hand to both answer and assist these clients. If you have any questions regarding the current position of the local property market, then please do reach out to us. Whether you are unsure if now is a good time to remain on the property market, whether you have queries regarding your current property sale, or simply want to find out what remortgage options you might have, please do not hesitate to contact our team on 01778 422567.

Words from the Mayor BRENDA JOHNSON
Well the world has changed drastically since I last wrote here. Life as we know it has changed and we all find ourselves grounded, unless of course you are a key worker. In my work as a carer, I am classed as an essential worker. I was fine up until April 11th, when I started to feel poorly. I contacted my doctors and they diagnosed me over the phone with a chest infection, not unusual for me as I suffer from asthma. A week later, having finished the antibiotics prescribed by my doctor, I was feeling worse and struggling to eat or even get out of bed. I was advised to ring 111 and I was soon in Peterborough City Hospital. I was swabbed for Covid 19 but even at that stage I could not believe I had got it. Within 24 hours, they decided I may be safe to go home but they had been giving me intravenous antibiotics and said I would have to continue to take these in tablet form for another seven days. They would ring me with the results of my swabs. So, on the next day I got a call telling me the news I dreaded, I had Covid 19. I was advised that if my breathing got worse, I was to call 999 and go back into hospital.

This leads me to plea with all those people who think the measures the government has put in place are not important to follow. STAY HOME! This virus is no fun and we need to get on top of it. I would like to thank all the people who are sticking to the guidelines. I also appreciate everything the Town Clerk is doing to keep the Town Council up to date and for the signs in town that he has procured. Thank you to all my fellow councillors, my daughters and my neighbours, but most of all my husband for taking excellent care of me. I was choked to get some lovely flowers from Dyke Village Hall Committee. Being the Chair of Dyke Village Hall is a labour of love not a chore, so thank you all. I also want to thank all the supermarket and shop workers who are doing a sterling job in the face of adversity. They go out to work to ensure others can have food and put themselves at risk. I know they often get lots of stick if people can’t get what they want. Life has changed for us all. Let’s stick together and help each other out. There is a great sense of community in Bourne and when we all pull together, we can achieve great things. Please do not put yourself or others in unnecessary danger. MAY 2020

LEGAL ISSUES IN A TIME OF CRISIS WORDS FROM RICHARD WOOD

egal practitioners in this time of the Coronavirus are largely working remotely. This brings new challenges that no one could have foreseen even four months ago.
or some form of skype or similar. Clearly, this in itself, brings new challenges. • In the property market, there are restrictions on a person’s ability to view a potential new home and on what transactions may continue at this time.
• Taking instructions is by e-mail and telephone communication. • The signing of wills and/or Lasting Powers of Attorney is either done remotely by post or through an open window or letter box. • Many court cases are still continuing. The cases which are given priority concern those dealing with children and financial issues in a divorce. The procedure involves the court advising of a telephone contact number
• In Employment Law, many business clients and employee clients have been grappling with the concept of furloughing. Where there is a written agreement between an employee and employer that the employee agrees to be furloughed, the government will reimburse the employer for eighty per cent of the employee’s monthly salary up to a limit of two thousand
and five hundred pounds. The impact of the Coronavirus on clients is essentially that less of their interactions with their legal advisers are by face-to-face contact and more are through the use of e-mails and telephone contact via direct calls or other social media applications. The numbers of electronic financial interactions for the clients have increased, whereas the traditional methods of contacting clients through the post have decreased. We would like to express our thanks to all of our clients for their continuing instructions during these times, and we would like to pass on our good wishes that all the local community in Bourne and the surrounding area remain safe in the weeks to come.

LOVING LIQUEURS
L
iqueurs are widely acknowledged to have been produced by monks, during the 13th century. Derived from the Latin ‘liquifacere’, which means to liquify, liqueurs have evolved, over the centuries, to become very popular alcoholic beverages, today. Liqueurs can be flavoured with fruits, herbs and spices, and are usually quite sweet and regularly have a lower alcohol content than spirits, although some liqueurs can have an ABV which is high. Liqueurs are great by themselves, over ice and/or used in cocktails with fabulous results! Some liqueurs have recipes which are only known to a small number of people. Numerous countries, globally, produce liqueurs, a good number of which are award-winning productions and for this quest I searched for a well-established company that has been producing an extremely popular liqueur for many years. Licor 43 (Cuarenta y Tres) is a true taste of Spain and has a unique blend of forty-three ingredients. The Zamora family, some seventy years ago, became the custodians of a secret recipe for this very fine liqueur. Renowned as Spain’s No.1 liqueur and for exporting too, Licor 43 is recognised globally and the popularity increases yearly. Vanilla, Mediterranean citrus, spice, sugars and alcohol are amongst the ingredients for this yellow,
MAY 2020
gold-coloured production. The taste, which follows the appearance and enticing bouquet, is unmistakable. It is superb on its own, with ice, and for making great cocktails. Licor 43 Orochata is another production from the same company. Light, silky, delicate and with a creamy texture, this is infused with original Licor 43, whilst tiger nuts, spices and citrus are utilised, to great advantage. The mouthfeel is complemented by the aroma, bringing together another combination of ingredients to achieve a most splendid liqueur. Licor 43 Baristo combines the essence of Licor 43 original with rare and exotic coffee from the Canary Islands. The freshly-roasted coffee, mature fruit, plus citrus and vanilla, combine to produce this delightful, elegant liqueur, with its complex flavours. I found this Licor 43 Baristo production wonderful for an end of meal experience – a perfect ending to any dining occasion. For more information and details, please visit www.licor43.com. Also available online.

ell, obviously there are no local upcoming events for me to advertise but I thought this may be an opportunity for us to share some ways of keeping entertained during the “lockdown.” Many arts venues are providing online “tours”, events, and recordings of live shows, which is amazing, as many of us do not get the opportunity to see such quality performances due to cost or other commitments.
WEBSITES www.filmedonstage.com – provides free access to filmed stage productions. www.broadwayworld.com -worth a look for a variety of streamed shows, broadcasts, and classes. www.nationalgallery.org.uk – virtual tours, activities, and information about paintings. www.britishmuseum.org – virtual tours, audio tours, digital resources and much more
YOUTUBE - all the better if you have the
facility to watch on your television screen. There are numerous things to keep you entertained on YouTube, but some worth a watch that have been especially added for us to enjoy while theatres are closed are: a) Cirque du Soleil - If you have never seen them and enjoy spectacular human circus skills with added drama, accompanied by live music and the most stunning costumes, now is your opportunity. I have been lucky to see several of their shows and was blown away the first time I saw them. They have just put one of their new shows, “Zed” (which has only been performed in Japan) as a one hour spectacular on YouTube. There are previous shows on there as well. www.cirquedusoleil.com/cirqueconnect. b) Ballet Rambert - If you enjoy contemporary dance, and the music of the Rolling Stones, watch “Rooster.” It is a complete work by the amazing choreographer and ex-Rambert dancer, Christopher Bruce. The eight dances that form the work are each recorded separately so you need to click on to the first one and it should take you through all eight (you can skip the odd advert). And for all you prospective dancers, they are offering online classes for a small voluntary contribution. www. rambert.org.uk/join-in/rambert-home-studio. c) National Theatre – Each Thursday evening the National Theatre are putting a screening of one of their live shows on YouTube, and it is there for seven days until the next performance. d) The Shows Must Go On – Visit the website www.andrewlloydwebber.com/the-showsmust-go-on by Andrew Lloyd Webber to see what musical show will be streamed on Fridays, available for forty-eight hours.

A Dog’s Life...
Luna’s Lockdown Diary
S
omething's changed around here lately, but I can't put my paw on what it is... the Hoomans that I live with are ALWAYS HOME – I mean, ALL OF THEM, ALL OF THE TIME! Hooman Dad used to leave the house every morning and then come back again at feeding time at the end of the day but now, instead of leaving in his car, he walks up to the end of the garden and goes into what looks like a huge, wooden kennel – I think I've heard them call it the 'offiss'? Dunno, just looks like a big posh kennel to me! He comes back into the house for feeds occasionally during the day and sometimes I go up there to see him and ask if he wants to play but he usually just tries to get me to lie down in the kennel while he does whatever it is that he's doing – boring! I then whine for a bit until he lets me out – doesn't normally take long. Walks are way more fun at the moment though! We all go together – Hooman Dad, Hooman Mum and the two smaller Hoomans (although sometimes they don't seem to want to go and they make loud, whining noises which seem to make Hooman Mum and Hooman Dad a bit cross). But anyway, off we go, to all my favourite places like the fields or by the river. We used to stop and meet other Hoomans and their dogs along the way but now we seem to give everyone else that we see a wide berth... I mean, I know I sometimes smell a bit but I'm pretty sure it's not that bad?! So, all in all, home life is pretty good – I'm getting loads more attention! Before 'the change', a lot of the time it was just me and Hooman Mum at home. Her 'offiss' is in the house and when she would go in there, I would just go and have a nap somewhere

nearby (sometimes on the sofa when she wasn't looking). She seems ok but I think the two smaller Hoomans can be quite disobedient and they ask for food way more than I do! They ask for something called 'a snack' A LOT during the day... Hooman Mum sometimes lets them have one but this is usually accompanied by an eye roll and some muttering under her breath which I can't understand but it sounds a bit like 'for duck's sake' – I don't know what ducks have to do with snacks but I've seen them down by the river before... maybe they're always hungry too? Hooman Mum seems to cheer up when she opens a big bottle of something red. I don't know what it is but her and Hooman Dad often sit and have a few glasses of it in the evening when the smaller Hoomans have gone upstairs for the night (although they do sometimes come back down and ask for another snack and then the eye rolling starts up again). One thing I am a bit sad about though is the change when someone delivers something to the house... I used to love hearing a knock at the door because it usually meant there was someone new to meet and sniff and get a fuss from but now, no one stops long enough to say hello or pat me on the head! I'm a Labrador for goodness sake – I have an unflappable desire to be everyone's friend but I can't even get close... I have heard the Hoomans use the words 'social distancing' a lot lately and wonder if this is what they mean? Whatever it is, I hope things go back to normal soon before we all go barking mad...

Man-made Feline Disease
“
He’s losing weight because he’s getting old” is a common statement we often get from owners and it is true that older cats tend to have less muscle mass compared to young, healthy ones. It’s the same in humans, as we tend to exercise less as we get older, but age is not the only reason for weight loss in cats. A very common reason, especially if your cat is still eating well and active, is hyperthyroidism, the most common hormonal problem in the older cat. The thyroid produces too much thyroid hormone, and as this is responsible for the metabolism of the body (how quickly we burn up our energy) then these cats are burning off more weight than they can replace. They start demanding lots of food and can become more demanding in general. The heart speeds up and they can become quite grumpy. The disease first appeared in the 1980s and ’90s and quickly spread around the globe. Because of its recent appearance, it is assumed that hyperthyroidism must be man-made, either due to diet or environment but, as yet, no definitive cause has been established.
are required to monitor the treatment and ensure other diseases are not present. •
•
Wise Words By Surgery to remove the Deirdre Wilson overactive gland is highly effective but does carry risks especially of damaging the tiny parathyroid glands next to it. The most recent development in treatment therapy is radioactive iodine. This has shown to be highly effective, safe, and only one dose is needed to permanently treat the disease. The radioactive iodine targets and kills the abnormal cells. However, it is expensive and needs hospitalisation for several days. As more specialist referral services offer this procedure, the costs have reduced, and a one-off treatment is comparable in price to lifelong daily medication.
Future research may reveal the cause of this disease, but in the meantime there are effective treatments available so if your cat is losing weight, please get it checked.
There are four methods of treating the disease, each with a variable success rate. •
As the thyroid relies on iodine to function, eliminating iodine from the diet can help. There are prescription diets that do this, but are only successful in single cat households, where your pet does not go outside. In areas close to the sea, there is too much natural iodine around for this method to work.
•
Daily medication with drugs to reduce the thyroid gland output is the most common treatment used. Tablets or liquids are given once or twice a day and are effective, but regular blood tests

Now is a Great Time to Review (YOU’VE GOT THE TIME!)
F
BY MATTHEW BIGGS - LIBERTY PARTNERSHIP LTD
irst and foremost, I want to pass on my best wishes to you all. We are in very trying times currently and, for me, it’s times like this that really make you appreciate the important things in life. The health and safety of our family, friends and colleagues all take precedence, but as normal life has ground to a halt and most of us being confined to comfort of our home, an odd side-effect has emerged … time! As most of the pastimes we all enjoyed such as pubs, breaks away and sporting events have been put on hold, we now have an abundance of time on our hands. If social media is anything to go by, a lot of people are using their time to either start new indoor exercise regimes or bake banana bread (not too sure about the latter, personally!).

And with all this extra time, wouldn’t it be great to finally get around to doing some of the tasks you’ve been putting off? If I was a betting man, I would say a lot of you will have a pile of statements, be it bank, mortgage, pensions or investments which you probably have put in safe keeping but not really given much thought to. Given the ongoing circumstances, I would suggest that now, more than ever, would be a good time get this paperwork out and review your current financial picture. We have seen the impact Coronavirus has had on all aspects of life and this will be no different with regards to your mortgage, pensions and any investments you might have. We have seen the financial markets around the globe impacted heavily by the
Bourne
Coronavirus pandemic, and if your pension and investments are exposed to these then you would have seen an impact first-hand. When we work with clients, we truly believe in educating and empowering them. Come the end of April, we will have spoken to all our clients to review the current situation with them, and the overall message we’re getting is one of calmness. Many clients have explained to us that, thanks to this onus that we put on educating them, they are not worried and were thankful that we have reached out to them. Although our office door is closed, we are still open for business. So, if you dig out some statements that could benefit from a review, or would like to explore what options you have, then please contact our office on 01778 342291 to arrange a FREE initial consultation.

With Solutions Personal Contract Plan. Available on Golf Hatch only. 18s+. Subject to availability and status. T&Cs apply. Offer available until March 31st, 2020. Indemnities may be required. Offers are not availabe in conjunction with any other offer and may be varied or withdrawn at any time. Accurate at time of publication. Freepost Volkswagen Financial Services. Figures shown are for comparability purposes; only compare fuel consumption and CO2 figures with other vehicles tested to the same technical procedures. These figures may not reflect real life driving results, which will depend upon a number of factors including the accessories fitted (post-registration), variations in weather, driving styles and vehicle load. There is a new test used for fuel consumption and CO2 figures (known as WLTP). The CO2 figures shown however, are based on a calculation designed to be equivalent to the outgoing (NEDC) test cycle and will be used to calculate vehicle tax on first registration. The range of figures stated covers the entire Volkswagen Golf model range including all-electric, hybrid and petrol/diesel vehicles. All-electric vehicles are zero emissions while driving. Hybrid vehicle figures were obtained using a combination of battery power and fuel. For more information, please see www.volkswagen.co.uk/owners/wltp or consult your retailer. Data correct at 12/19. Figures quoted are for a range of configurations and are subject to change due to ongoing approvals/changes. Please consult your retailer for further information. Official fuel consumption figures for the Golf model range in mpg (litres/100km): Combined 0 (0.0) - 141.2 (2). Combined CO2 emissions 0-164g/km.
