Introduction
Welcome to your June Issue. Welcome to our third on-line version of your favourite community lifestyle magazine. Spring has come and will soon be gone, with some signs that normality is not too far away. Optimists are seeing some hope, as certain restrictions are being lifted, and some children may be edging slowly, and very carefully, back to their classrooms. Some businesses have returned to pre-lockdown working, whilst many are still anxiously playing the waiting game. Let us all hope that the damage, inevitably done to many firms, large and small, during the lockdown can soon be repaired and that high streets will soon be buzzing again. Whatever we may be going through, let us all remember that June 21st is Father’s Day and the opportunity to shower that special one with “virtual hugs” and gifts. To my dad and to my husband Chris I send all my love. Keep healthy everyone and stay safe.
Claire x
It has certainly been an eye-opening time for us all. Many people have turned their hand to new skills and hobbies; others will have dusted down their sewing machines to join in fabulous schemes to provide the NHS and care-workers with protective ‘scrubs’ and face-masks; many have turned their gardens into “virtual Chelseas”; and jigsaws will have taken a hammering. Never have so many people felt compelled to exercise so much, once we’d been given that slot in which to concentrate our energies (one hour, remember?) How many will be finding excuses, I wonder, not to have to pound the streets, once normality is resumed? For every finely tuned “lockdown hunk”, there may well be an increasing number of “lockdown chunks”, not to mention the “lockdown drunks.” Which one have you become? The coronavirus pandemic is apparently affecting how new parents are being influenced when choosing names for their new-borns. Names with positive connotations such as Hope and Hero are proving popular, as are names linked to happiness such as Bliss, Joy, Blithe and Felicity. Indigo (as part of the “NHS rainbow”) and Florence (as in Nightingale) are right up there, whilst Cora and Rona are definitely “no-nos” right now – can’t think why! Enjoy the read and let’s hope for some resolution to this crisis before too long.

JUNE 21st:
FATHER’S DAY
Y
but it’s not the only day we can celebrate….
ou may already know that this year, Father’s Day will be celebrated on Sunday June 21st. It’s always the third Sunday in the month, ever since the idea was introduced in the USA in 1910. In the UK, we’d long acknowledged Mothering Sunday as the fourth Sunday in Lent, (March 22nd this year), so it was only fair that we dads should get their treats as well.
June 1st: National Dare Day The time when you can challenge anyone to make a dare, be it a personal thing liking asking her/him out on a date, a challenge for them to achieve something special or just make a fool of themselves. June 4th: Hug Your Cat Day If you are a cat lover, this is why you have your feline friend in the first place, but today’s the day to make more of a fuss than usual June 8th: Best Friends Day For that really special person, here’s the chance to show them just how much you appreciate their friendship – send them a card or a gift! June 17th: Eat Your Vegetables Day The ideal opportunity to do as the experts are telling us – at least five portions of fruit and veg. per day. (Alternatively, June 5th happens to be Doughnut Day!!!)

June 21st: The Summer Solstice The longest day of the year so make the most of it now before the nights start pulling in – downhill to winter! June 26th: Forgiveness Day. Alexander Pope wrote, “To err is human, to forgive, divine.” Three hundred years on, it’s still true and today’s the day to forgive and be forgiven. These are just a few of the days which can be celebrated in June, but how could you not raise a glass to the following beauties? June 2nd: National Rocky Road Day June 9th: National Donald Duck Day June 13th: National Weed Your Garden Day, or June 28th: International Body Piercing Day?!

RESTAURANT SHOWS APPRECIATION IN THE
TASTIEST WAY POSSIBLE!
I
n the five years since making its first appearance on Bourne’s North Street, this very popular Nepalese/Indian restaurant has found its way securely into the hearts of many diners of the area, grateful after every visit that such a fascinating menu of delicious dishes should be so close at hand.
The business is in the capable hands of three partners, (Pramod Dhakal, Krishna Luitel and Bhim Khanal) and it was fascinating to hear from Pramod, on my recent visit, just how the current COVID-19 situation has created opportunities for many people to benefit from some kindhearted gestures from the Gurkha 91 team. The restaurant closed its doors, along with all other eateries and pubs, in the earliest phase of the epidemic, this move then being reinforced by the total lockdown on March 23rd. It soon became clear to us all just how vital the role played by our ‘key workers’ was to be during the lockdown, and as a gesture of gratitude from the Gurkha 91 team, a batch of 250 meals was taken to various wards at Peterborough City Hospital (where Pramod’s wife is a nurse), and distributed to some very worthy recipients, including those wards most affected by the coronavirus epidemic. It is Pramod’s belief that his restaurant will only survive and flourish if the local community is on his side. He is happy to extend the notion of “giving something back to the community” whenever the opportunity arises. Therefore, following the success of the Peterborough ‘meal-

deal’, the Hereward Medical Centre in Bourne was next in line, as fifty-five meal packs were delivered and devoured by the eager staff, many of whom, as regular visitors, were already well aware of the treat that was in store! In the interests of fair play, Bourne’s other Medical Centre, the Galletly Practice were the next to benefit from this irresistible, Gurkha wave of generosity, as thirty-five meal packs were soon to make the short journey up North Road to their grateful, well-deserving recipients. Pramod explained just how rewarding this gesture of providing meals for others had been, and how it went alongside the other ways in which Gurkha 91 is happy to help the community. On average, two to three vouchers for free meals at the restaurant are handed over every month as raffle prizes for any number of local charities and good causes, he added. One of many unfortunate consequences resulting from the present COVID-19 lockdown has been the need to slightly increase the prices for the meals at Gurkha 91. Pramod explains how, as almost all of their spices are sourced from Nepal, such a disruption as this to the international supply chain has inevitably meant that the customer is the one ‘taking the hit’. However, the “quality comes at a price” argument always wins the day for this particular customer. The restaurant re-opened on May 1st for takeaways and home deliveries – online orders are available at www.gurkha91bourne.co.uk. JUNE 2020

Beer Through the Year: Windsor & Eton Brewery
W
indsor & Eton Brewery was founded during 2010 and now proudly possesses a Royal Warrant. Producing great classic and new beer styles, a good number of which are bottle conditioned, this brewery has a range of very impressive ales, that includes award winners and multi award-winning productions. Knight of the Garter Golden Ale: (3.8% vol). Described on the label as ‘Sunshine in a glass’ (I agree), this golden ale is brewed with a blend of hops from the New World. A citrus aroma greets the nasal senses, which follows admirably to the mouthfeel. Guardsman Best Bitter: (4.2% vol). Extremely popular, Guardsman is brewed utilising Fuggles and Goldings whole leaf hops to great advantage. This easy-drinking, smooth production has wide appeal, with its copper colour and excellent taste. A favourite with numerous beer lovers. Windsor Knot Pale Ale: (4.5% vol). Brewed originally to commemorate the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton, this beer uses Sovereign and Nelson Sauvin hops and has many supporters amongst pale ale devotees. Republika Craft Pilsner: (4.8% vol). This splendid craft beer is one of several productions from the Windsor & Eton Brewery which have won awards. Combinations of Saaz hops, Czech yeast and Pilsner malt produce this full-flavoured delight, which I found very refreshing. JUNE 2020
Conqueror Black IPA: (5.0% vol). Bringing together Cascade and Pacific Jade whole leaf hops, plus a blend of five speciality malts, this complex and noticeably rich IPA gained great interest from the outset. ‘Superb’, ‘awesome’ and ‘brilliant’ are some of the descriptions attributed to this beer. Wasteland Double IPA: (10.0% vol). Belgian candi sugar is one of the ingredients for this Double IPA with ten different hops, that include some of the best of America and the New World. Another exceptional IPA, which certainly delivers on aroma, mouthfeel and the palate’s enjoyment. Other popular productions include Capital DryHopped Lager and Treason West Coast IPA. Ordering is easy and beers are delivered via courier to anywhere in the UK. Visitors to the brewery are made very welcome. Windsor & Eton Brewery, Duke Street, Windsor, Berkshire, SL4 1SE. Health
Living the Lockdown Lifestyle BY CLAIRE GRAY, RENU - HEALTH, BEAUTY & FITNESS
I
think it is fair to say that the present lockdown presents different challenges for all of us. Maybe you are home schooling; working from home; enduring a lockdown on your own; locked in (with no escape from your loved ones); finding your day absorbed with calls and virtual contact to the nearest and dearest you are worried about; a key worker under pressure; or simply lacking some structure to your week.
The lockdown has encouraged a surge in our technological awareness, and this has meant there is a whole world of new opportunities available to us to improve our lifestyle. However, just because something is freely available and accessible, it does not mean it is right for you and your needs.
Or maybe, you’ve tried the workouts and now you either hurt for days, you have injured yourself or you simply didn’t enjoy it. Perhaps you feel the exercise options readily available are not suitable for you.
As the lockdown starts to ease, we will begin to get the opportunity to get our lives back to some sort of normal. What a relief! But this also means that you can start to formulate a plan of what you would like your new routine to look like. Here are some of the positives I hope you have found during lockdown:
However, there can be no doubt that we need to be utilising this time to make sure we are at our optimum health. Whilst in theory this is a great time to get fit and eat healthily, the reality is that we may be simply watching and listening to everyone else jumping up and down from our chair or desk … with a nice homemade cake in our hand!
problem - you may have simply chosen the wrong recipe.
This is a great time to try things you have not done before, and that is not exclusively exercise. Many of you are using this time to learn to bake, colour or cut your hair, start a new hobby, or try a home beauty regime. Some will turn out well, others not so good - that’s life! If you have tried one type of exercise and it did not suit you, it does not mean that exercise is the

“The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” (A ‘HUNGER GAMES’ NOVEL) BY SUZANNE COLLINS
Ambition will fuel him. Competition will drive him. But power has its price. It is the morning of the reaping that will kick off the tenth annual Hunger Games. In the Capitol, eighteen-year-old Coriolanus Snow is preparing for his one shot at glory as a mentor in the Games. The once-mighty house of Snow has fallen on hard times, its fate hanging on the slender chance that Coriolanus will be able to outcharm, outwit and outmanoeuvre his fellow students to mentor the winning tribute. The odds are against him. He’s been given the humiliating assignment of mentoring the female tribute from District 12, the lowest of the low. Their fates are now completely intertwined - every choice Coriolanus makes could lead to favour or failure, triumph or ruin. Inside the arena, it will be a fight to the death. Outside the arena, Coriolanus starts to feel for his doomed tribute... and must weigh his need to follow the rules against his desire to survive … no matter what it takes.

ANNUAL MEETING OF BOURNE TOWN COUNCIL
NEW MAYOR APPOINTED
T
ypically, the end of May sees Bourne Town Council hold its Annual Meeting to elect a new Mayor/Chairman of the Council for the coming year and to conduct legally required business. Under normal circumstances, the whole council, invited guests and members of the general public would attend the annual “Mayor making night” in Bourne Corn Exchange. Obviously, under the current restrictions, this had to be held via remote link, using “Skype”, on Tuesday May 26th. A big thank you goes to Bourne’s hard-working Town Clerk, Ian Sismey, who managed to get the technology to work and to get all of the available councillors linked up. The first item on the agenda was to elect a new Chairman/Town Mayor for the year 2020/21 and Councillor Colin Pattison has been appointed. Here, he takes up the story: “I am very happy and honoured to have been unanimously elected for the coming year. I am very grateful to my colleagues for entrusting me with this role/position for a second time, having previously done so in 2016/17. Once again, I will be supported by my wonderful wife and “rock”, Fiona, as my consort. It was all quite strange and surreal being given the vote and nod of approval when you’re not all sat in the same room. We really do live in strange times! My appointment was then followed by the retiring Chairman’s closing remarks, these being from my friend and colleague, Councillor Brenda Johnson. Grateful thanks were expressed by Brenda and
her husband/ consort Tony for the support they had received, and how much they had enjoyed their year. They have certainly done a marvellous job. Obviously, they have not had the last couple of months as they would have wished, due to the lockdown, and unfortunately, the movement restrictions will mean that Fiona and I will be in the same position for the foreseeable future. A decision on who would be the Vice Chairman this year was deferred, as it requires further discussion. However, the council did appoint its Chairman for the Standing Committees for 2020/21, as follows: •
Amenities - Cllr Colin Pattison.
•
Finance and General Purpose - Cllr Philip Knowles.
•
Highways and Planning - Cllr Helen Crawford.
Human Resources and Governance to be assembled from five councillors, following a ballot in due course. This coming year is going to be very interesting, albeit very different. Normally, by now, the first civic duties, invites to schools and care homes would be coming in, which is not the case this year. We do not even have a fixed date for our Civic Service at the Bourne Abbey Church, with the original one on Sunday June 14th currently postponed. One thing for sure, is that Fiona and I, and the Town Council, will not hide or waiver from doing our duty over the coming twelve months. It’s going to be tough, different and challenging in these unprecedented times. For now, please stay safe, take care and act responsibly for all our sakes and for the parish of Bourne.”

NURSERY SPREADS CHEER TO CARE HOME During these strange times, Headstart Nursery and Pre-School in Bourne has remained open to help and support those parents who are keyworkers or their vulnerable children. Over the past couple of years, Headstart has grown its links within the community and that has included taking the children on regular visits to the local care home, The Cedars. As a nursery, it wanted to continue showing support for the care home and worked with the children to create some lovely artwork to leave on the home’s doorstep. This included words written with a painting of some of the nursery rhymes that they would sing together, along with Handprint Bees with the words ‘Be happy, Be safe, Be loved’. Finally, a message from Deputy Manager, Abbie: “As a nursery, we are aiming to support our local families; therefore, if any keyworkers need childcare, then please contact me (Abbie) on 01778 393925 and we will accommodate, as much as possible. Community News
“SEW FAR, SEW GOOD!” Local People Pulling Together During a Crisis The present COVID-19 pandemic has provided the opportunity (and time!) for literally thousands of people to become involved in helping others in so many different ways in our communities. One such initiative has been the nationwide “For the Love of Scrubs” campaign, which has seen our extraordinary NHS and Social Care Service being given fabulous assistance by people making PPE (personal protective equipment) and scrubs (protective tunics and trousers), so that they can continue their efforts safely. The following account reached us recently from Bourne resident, Libby Barber, (who has also shown here how parents can put the enthusiasm of their dear offspring to good effect!)
“Over the past few years, members of my family have received life-saving treatment and support from the NHS and I wanted to play a small part in giving something back. Given the current situation with COVID-19 and the national shortage of PPE and scrubs for NHS staff, I joined the local “For the Love of Scrubs, Stamford, Lincs & Rutland” group on Facebook which was founded by Miriam Spring-Davies, and which is part of a nationwide campaign. I was daunted at first as I had not done any dressmaking since I left school. I downloaded the pattern, printed all sixty pages of it, and my daughter, Holly, spent four hours sticking it together! While she was doing that, I began to make drawstring scrub wash bags from old pillowcases; I managed fifteen that afternoon and we were off! Nicola Griffiths, our local “Box Buddy”, coordinates the drop-off and collection point in Bourne; so many people have kindly donated fabric, old duvet covers and sheets. We collected our fabric and the sewing began. The first set of scrubs, from cutting to completely finished garments, took me about six hours, following a YouTube tutorial step-by-step. I was elated when I finished it! I gradually became quicker and can now produce a full set of scrubs, complete with wash bag and hat in about two hours! 16

In Memory Of
REMEMBERING...
Janet Girling
B
ourne resident, Janet Girling, passed away on April 18th, 2020, aged seventy-one years. Born in Stamford on February 28th, 1949, she spent her childhood in Ryhall before moving to Bourne in 1969 after marrying John. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last year, surrounded by all her beloved family, who were everything to her. She will be forever remembered as a loving mum and nan. Janet spent many years of her life supporting local football and bowls clubs. She was a kind and generous lady who always had a big smile for anyone and everyone that she saw around the town. This would most likely be in Sainsburys or the Nags Head, where she hung out at her regular coffee clubs with John and friends! Janet’s family held a small private service on May 18th at Surfleet Crematorium, and plan to arrange a memorial event to celebrate her life after lockdown restrictions are lifted.
“Discovering Magazines” are community magazines, issued monthly and distributed to houses and businesses in the local area. They are read and enjoyed by many people. At a sad time like this, we understand that it is not easy to deal with everything following the loss of a loved
one. However, one thing which we feel might help you come to terms with your loss is to share with others some information and some of the many memories you may have. So, if you would like us to include a piece about your loved one, maybe including
some photographs, please get in touch with us and we would be delighted to share it with our many readers, (at no cost to yourself!) by publishing it in our next issue. Please call Claire on 01778 421427 / 07837 499061 or e-mail info@discovering magazines.co.uk.

HOW BOURNE PAID ITS RESPECTS ON
M
VE DAY
ay 8th, 1945 – Victory in Europe Day (VE DAY) – is a day etched in the memory of everyone who witnessed it. After nearly six years of war, Germany officially surrendered on the previous day and the conflict was finally over.
2020 was the year that saw the seventy-fifth anniversary of this historic moment and the government were so keen for the people of Britain to celebrate this occasion with its remaining veterans that they moved the May Bank Holiday from Monday May 4th to Friday May 8th. The town had great plans, spearheaded by Councillor Paul Fellows, from pipers to buglers, from 1940s dance bands to street parties and a people’s parade. Then we were hit by the current coronavirus pandemic and maybe this is our war? Obviously, all the town’s plans were cancelled as the world went into lockdown, in an attempt to defeat our own, present-day enemy. The Town Council, as with the rest of the nation, were dismayed at having to curtail the celebrations for this important landmark in our history, but were insistent that, despite the difficulties we were all facing, we should mark this moment in some small way. Not wishing to break any of the government’s guidelines, the Town Council organised a small but poignant tribute on the day. With banners above

the Old Town Hall and, on the headline planters around town, a message was sent to the people of Bourne, reminding them of the significance of May 8th, 2020. The lights illuminating the Old Town Hall were changed for four days from NHS blue to a more distinctive red, white and blue. At 11am on the day, the Town Council arranged for the Royal British Legion standard to be present, below the Union Flag flying on the Old Town Hall, along with a bugler and Bourne’s Mayor-elect, Councillor Colin Pattison. The traffic was stopped by the Lincs 4X4 Rescue Team and the national two-minute silence was observed in remembrance. The bugler played ‘The Last Post’, followed by Councillor Pattison making the town’s tribute to those who had died to secure our future. Due to the circumstances, the Town Council were unfortunately unable to have advertised this event but, for those that were in and around the town centre on the day, I am sure they will agree that this was indeed a fitting tribute. The Town Council extend their thanks to the Royal British Legion for their help and support, the Lincs 4X4 Rescue Team, The Len Pick Trust for their continued support in ‘everything Bourne’, and Roadphone NRB, without whom this small event would not have been possible. (Words from Bourne’s Town Clerk, Ian Sismey)

June Gardening Tips
J
une is one of the busiest months of the year for the vegetable gardener: there are crops to plant, sow, and harvest, weeding, watering, feeding, getting rid of pests – the list seems never-ending. You really do need to keep on top of all these jobs to get the best out of your plot.
Did you know that in every square metre of soil there can be as many as 100,000 weeds? Yes, I am sure you do!! No wonder there is a relentless battle going on between gardener and weeds. Do keep them at bay as they use water and nutrients that your crops need and shade them from the light. • Hoe regularly and particularly when the soil is dry, as the severed and exposed roots will die quickly. If you hoe when the soil is damp remove remains so that they will not re-grow. • Spread mulches such as garden compost, well-rotted manure or bark chips, to suppress weeds or use lightproof membrane to kill more established weeds. • Make sure that you do not let weeds flower; you will only get new crops of weeds from their seeds. Pests are also becoming more noticeable in the warmer weather so don’t forget to net brassicas to protect them from the pigeons, and it is a good idea to protect carrots from carrot fly by covering with a fine mesh. Cabbage root fly, which attacks the roots of brassicas, is caused by female flies laying their eggs on the surface of the soil next to the stem of the plant. When transplanting out young plants, place something around the base of the plant to create a collar, for example a piece of carpet, cardboard or fleece.

As the month progresses, thinning and planting out to final positions will start to overtake sowing as the main activity as this month offers the last opportunity to sow many seeds. Sweetcorn can be planted out and, as it is self-pollinating, it is better sown closely in a block. Mark out a square or rectangle and plant at about 35-40cm (14-18inches) apart in each direction. ` Other jobs include: • Plant out vegetables that you have grown from seed but make sure you harden them off before planting out in their final position. • Thin out seedlings and plant others in their final growing positions. • Earth up potatoes and, towards the end of the month, harvest earlies. • Cut down broad beans and peas just above the surface and use for compost, but leave the roots in the ground as a good source of nitrogen. • Once you are sure that frosts are over, you can plant out the more tender crops such as aubergines, peppers, chillies, courgettes, marrows and squashes. • Succession sow beetroot, salad crops, carrots and, later in the month, Florence fennel. Traditionally, Florence fennel is sown after the longest day, June 21st, as it is less likely to bolt. If the weather is dry, then water your seed drills well before sowing – this way the young plants will develop a good root system. • Last chance to sow runner beans and main crop carrots. • Brussels sprouts, leeks, sprouting broccoli and the last of the summer, autumn and red cabbages, and the first of winter cabbages can also be planted. • Protect carrots with insect proof netting and net brassicas to deter pigeons. Happy planting!

SPECIALIST HERITAGE ELECTRICIANS Local contracting firm, Alto Electrical, are now a reputable name in the local area for domestic and commercial work, but did you know that they are also forging ahead as “specialist heritage electricians”?
So why choose Alto Electrical as your heritage specialist? They:
1
Respect the historical character of the structure:
The first thing Alto do upon receiving a request to carry out some heritage work is to research the building to get a feel for the history, and identify areas requiring particular care. At Alto, they are passionate about protecting your building from unnecessary disruption and damage to crucial characteristics. They look to reuse any previous holes, notches and cable runs, whilst also taking care to cover any previous damage with the new installation, if this is feasible.
2
Supply specialist craftsmen to undertake any work:
Whether it be building or lighting design, they work with other trusted heritage specialists, locally and nationally, who they are able to put you in touch with, for other aspects of work on your project. Alto are registered with the NICEIC (National Inspection Council for Electrical Installation Contracting) and are accredited members of the Guild of Master Craftsmen.
3
Adopt cable routes that are sympathetic to the character of the structure:
Using their expertise and experience, they take the utmost care to proceed with any proposed work to make use of any voids and features

of the building that can be used to discreetly hide any cables or containment. They do not rush projects through and appreciate that attention to every detail is paramount when dealing with period properties, as one miscalculation could be detrimental to a significant feature of the property. For your piece of mind, Alto hold £10 million public liability insurance that they would not hesitate to use if it was needed. (At the time of writing, they have never had the need to make a claim!)
4
Minimise the physical and visual impact to the building
By thinking one step ahead and consigning as much of the installation as possible discreetly in rooms, they can ensure that they incorporate any future capacity into the installation, to minimise the need to frequently alter it.
5
Use traditional installation methods:
Alto can repair and replace obsolete wiring systems with specialist tools, using methods that are no longer taught in college. These skills are preserved through regular practice and passed down by Alto’s electricians mentoring their apprentices.
6
Can assist you in applying for consent for proposed works: They are happy to provide expertise and exJUNE 2020
perience to help with applying for consent, whether it be helping to document electrical additions on a wider proposal or providing a lighting design to prove lux levels to enable you to get a faculty.
7
Work to engage with trustees and PCCs to ensure congruence:
Alto often find that other members may have differing views on developing a project, so they are happy to attend committee meetings to discuss the proposed works and answer any questions.
8
Implement special measures to protect the fabric of the building:
They take time to plan how they are going to protect any significant or fragile aspects and have invested heavily in protective equipment to ensure that no harm comes to any existing features.
9
Protect the rest of the building from dust and disruption:
They prepare any areas beforehand by cordoning off space that they do not need to access,
and protect the rest of the area from dust, paying particular attention to any significant features. They also allow for a professional “after-clean for any in-depth projects.
10
Refurbish historic electrical fittings and fixtures:
Over time, original fittings may fail and need fixing or rewiring; Alto’s electricians have the skills and patience to delicately restore any existing fixtures that you would like to keep.
11
Source authentic and bespoke fittings that complement the nature of the building:
Being creatively minded, Alto can help you decide exactly what you want your new installation to look like. If you do not have the fittings that you wish to have fitted, they can work with specialist companies that take a drawing of what you would like, and turn it into a reality; whether it is something that looks traditional or a complementary statement piece Alto can help!

OBSERVATIONS IN THE PANDEMIC WORDS FROM RICHARD WOOD
A
s solicitors, we have continued to offer legal services in the current crisis.
At the time of writing, we have (along with many colleagues in our profession) been working remotely. The full range of legal services has continued, albeit to some extent, differently. New ways of working are being used and, as with others, there are likely to be changes in all areas of legal practice, moving forward. Although there has been some slowing down in the property market, that will be picking up again now that the restrictions are being eased. We have been taking instructions on wills from clients and have on occasions been signing through windows or our clients have followed our instructions on signing. Both wills and Lasting Powers of Attorney can be done in this way and it remains even more important for all of us to keep our wills updated. In employment matters, there are new
issues arising with the concept of “furlough”, (until recently, a word completely new to many) and how that affects an individual business. Employers and employees need to understand how that affects them. Court hearings have been dealt with by telephone (which is a novel experience). Indeed, there is likely to be a move towards video conferencing on a more regular basis. Family matters such as divorce and financial affairs have continued, whilst cases involving children have proceeded as before, as these issues are time-sensitive. It remains to be seen what society will look like when the crisis ends. However, at Double and Megson we are proud to continue to serve the community in all your legal needs. There have been times when we have acted for three generations in the same family. Our advisers believe that a knowledgeable but down-to-earth approach serves us well and our many returning clients support that ethos.

A “New Normal”
I
BY JASON TREADWELL, MANAGING DIRECTOR
t is safe to say that the world has changed and adapted to a “new normal”, since the outbreak of Covid-19. Lockdown seems to have impacted every person and industry in one way or another, with the property industry very much included. It has caused limitations on viewings and valuations, as well as understandably limiting what buyers, tenants and sellers have wanted to do. Something as simple as a viewing even became increasingly difficult to carry out.
The appetite shown from buyers during the lockdown was surprising, which has only continued and grown within the last few weeks. Estate agents have been able to show buyers and tenants round homes again, with PPE used, occupiers vacating and social distancing being observed throughout the viewing. Valuations are able to be conducted in the same manner, meaning more new properties are coming to the market. Our office, which has been recently deep cleaned, is also now open, albeit with visits by appointment only.
Virtual viewings became the norm, with estate agents or home sellers themselves carrying out a video tour of their home, which could then be provided to potential buyers or tenants. Here, at Newton Fallowell, we have added a narration and musical background for each video, to ensure as much detail is being provided and the viewing experience is as good as possible.
We are pleased to say that the Bourne property market is active and moving, with properties selling and letting in good numbers, and buyers and sellers still looking. As more and more home sellers and buyers, landlords and tenants enter the market, we hope this will assist in stabilising house prices in the Bourne area.
Whilst valuations were still possible, videos were often used, with home sellers guiding us round their home, in order for us to provide comparable properties of a similar condition to their home that have sold. This enabled us to provide valuations for clients, with these homes beginning to come to the market with the easing of restrictions on the property market.
If you are considering moving, or have any questions about the market, mortgages, house prices or the future of the Bourne property market, then please do not hesitate to contact us. With the team available on 01778 422567 and the office open via appointment only, we look forward to answering your questions and assisting you in whatever manner required.

Mayor
Words from the Mayor BRENDA JOHNSON Well, I can hardly believe that it is a year since I accepted the chain for the second time and became Mayor of Bourne. What a strange year it has been! It started with my Civic Service and then in October I had my first fundraising event, my Civic Dinner. Unfortunately, I then had to cancel my next planned event twice. However, my Valentine’s Day dinner and dance, held at Toft House Hotel was very successful, whilst the next planned event was to have been my Big Birthday Party at the Corn Exchange in Bourne, before being scuppered by COVID-19, and since then, all has been quiet! For VE Day celebrations on May 8th, we had a great street party in our front gardens on Pinewood Close where I live, with almost the whole community getting involved. It was a wonderful afternoon and I thank Kay Henderson for organising it. I am proud of the Bourne people who have mainly kept to the rules set out by the government to protect the NHS from getting overwhelmed and also to slow down the spread of the disease. As I reported last month, I have had the coronavirus but am now fully recovered. So I thought I would share with you some facts that I have found on this subject, as I am aware there is still a lot of speculation out there. Unfortunately, whilst the exponential upslope of the pandemic curve is relatively predictable, the downslope is definitely not. Many people think that this is like a kind of flu that kills 1% and most people are only mildly ill. It is now known to be leaving people with permanent damage, and it attacks all ages. In an outdoor setting, you are less likely to catch it, so long as you are not too close to people when having a conversation with them, so please maintain the two-metre rule for social distancing.

I would like to apologise to the people of Bourne for not being present at the memorial service which was arranged for VE Day on May 8th, but it was felt by some people that it would be wrong for me to attend. However, I had been twenty days in isolation after my diagnosis and the medical advice from the government and NHS was that, after that, there is no reason to shield. I am still keeping to all the advice and am also able to continue to help our community out and will stay involved wherever I can. Finally, I would like to thank Ian Sismey, the Town Clerk, for all he does in the town. I send best wishes and thanks to all the people in Bourne, Dyke, Cawthorpe and Twenty for their support, and I would like to wish my successor, Colin Pattison all the very best for his year in office. PROTECTION WHEN IT MATTERS MOST If you want peace of mind that you and your family would cope financially following a death or serious illness then now is the time to consider life and critical illness insurance. According to the Association of British Insurer’s December 2019 Key Facts report, the insurance industry paid out £5.3 billion in protection claims in 2018 - an average of £14.5 million paid every day. We’ve teamed up with AIG to bring you a wide range of protection cover to help give you peace of mind should the worst ever happen. So customers can rest assured they will have financial support when they need it most.
SUE AND MARTIN’S STORY When Sue Ansell became critically ill, it was a tough time for the whole family. Husband Martin, pensions expert at NFU Mutual, explains why having protection cover was vital. “Around 25 years ago, Sue and I were moving to another house, so we increased our mortgage to £72,000. “We were asked if we would like to protect ourselves, not just in the event of dying, but also in the event of a critical illness. We thought it unlikely that both of us would ever have a critical illness at the same time so we decided to do half, £36,000 as this would cover half of the mortgage should anything happen. “Sometime later, Sue began to feel unwell. She would lose the ability to speak or understand people — just for a minute or two. We had it investigated, and the hospital told us it was a tumour in the brain, and it would kill her unless we allowed the doctors to operate. At the time, you’re facing the uncertainty of the tumour, the operation, the children — the last thing you want, on top of all that, is to have financial worry. “Luckily, the critical illness cover did exactly what it said on the tin. It gave us a lump sum that allowed us to rely on one income rather than the two.
“The pressure of the mortgage was eased and it took away such a great part of the worries we faced. “Thankfully Sue has made a recovery. She is able to live her life and do the things that really matter, like seeing her kids grow up. “You can’t insure against emotional problems but you can insure against financial ones. Do what you can afford and review it regularly.”
YOU NEED TO KNOW Critical illness cover provides protection for illnesses and conditions specified in the policy. NFU Mutual Financial Advisers advise on AIG Life protection products.

Checklist for moving day during the COVID-19 crisis You can reduce moving day stress by preparing beforehand. Some removal services would normally offer packing services, but these will be limited for now. However, boxes and packing equipment can still be supplied. A ‘deep clean’ is recommended when moving in and out of a property, so it’s a good idea to agree with your property lawyer whether you need to do a deep clean on your own home when it is empty, and also whether you need to do this in your new home before you move in.
VULNERABLE PEOPLE OR THOSE SHIELDING If you are in this category, please seek medical advice on whether your move should take place as during this period the government advice is “staying at home and avoiding unnecessary contacts over this period, if at all possible.” They also suggest that “All parties involved in home buying and selling should prioritise agreeing amicable arrangements to change move dates for individuals in this group, or where someone in a chain is in this group.” Please read the advice for vulnerable people or those shielding in the ‘Government advice on home moving during the COVID-19 outbreak’. 34

BEFORE MOVING DAY:
1
If you need to send money to your property lawyer, check whether your bank account has any limit on the amount you can send via your online banking. If you arrange the payments in advance, you can avoid a visit to your bank. Be alert to fraudsters – they look for signs you might be sending money so avoid posting on social media that you are moving and be especially suspicious if you receive communication that suggests your property lawyer has changed their bank details.
2
Self-pack miscellaneous and nonbreakable items wherever possible (ask your removal company what boxes and other materials they will supply and to itemise any associated costs).
3
Where possible, please clean your belongings, with standard domestic cleaning products before they are handled by others, including removal firms.
4 5
Packing by the remover is currently limited to china, glass and breakable items.
Dismantle for packing, and then reassemble at the destination, furniture items in your new home, wherever possible.
6
Co-ordinate your move with anyone living in the property so they will have time to move out before you or your removers arrive at the property. Check if there is an agreed time for the property to become vacant on JUNE 2020
the day of the move, for example 2pm.
7
If it is possible, allow 72 hours between a householder moving out and a new one moving in. This may be more likely to be possible when renting.
household disinfectant (check first that it won’t damage the surfaces).
5 6 7
Clean and wash toilet facilities as above.
1
8 9
Open a loft hatch or set up a loft ladder.
2
10
Try to have everything packed and ready the night before your move.
ON MOVING DAY, BEFORE THE REMOVERS ARRIVE: Where possible, if you haven’t already, please clean your belongings with standard domestic cleaning products before they are handled by others, including removal firms. Ideally, leave the property while the removers are working, either by staying outside, or keeping yourself to one room. Always observe the two metre social distancing measures. lot has happened since the last issue of Discovering Bourne; some lockdown restrictions are slowly being lifted and, more importantly for SureMove Property Lawyers and those wishing to move home, the housing market has restarted. This is great news for SureMove, our clients and for the economy.
We are already seeing signs of positivity, with more quotes
and an increase in new instructions

in recent days. Builders are back on site and are finishing properties that were originally due to be completed during April, so lots of clients will be getting their keys to their brand-new properties and moving in at the end of May. We have also seen many of those files that were “put on hold” during lockdown come back to life. We believe strongly that the property market will not be all ‘doom and gloom’ as some “experts” have predicted. People will always
Bourne
move home and, whilst there may be bumps along the way, property has and always will be a great investment. In the UK we love owning our own properties and the current situation won’t change that!
The home moving and conveyancing process has adapted and evolved quite rapidly during lockdown.
It seems clients do not need a client meeting to sign their paperwork but are happy to have JUNE 2020
a telephone or video meeting and deal with the majority of correspondence by e-mail. We are using technology to ID clients and finding that the whole process is running very smoothly. We are fully operational working from home, so in accordance with the government advice, will continue doing so for the moment.
The government currently has lots of schemes in place to assist buyers, from the Help
to Buy scheme, Lifetime ISAs, Help to Buy ISAs and their latest planned housing scheme, First Homes. This offers a 30% discount on first homes to key workers, enabling them to be able to afford a home in their area, rather than being forced to look elsewhere due to increasing prices. Lenders are increasing their borrowing options, once again offering mortgages to people with a 15% deposit; rates are becoming more competitive and interest rates are low. There really are lots of great opportunities to purchase or re-mortgage your current property.
We are really excited to report that two of our newest recruits will be starting an apprenticeship scheme with SureMove
from June 1st 2020, training to become qualified property lawyers. One of our apprentices, Kiera, joined SureMove at the beginning of 2019 and said, “ I am so touched that throughout this tough time of lockdown you have acknowledged my drive to learn, better myself and my career at SureMove … I definitely feel my year at SureMove has given me the tools to prepare for a degree
The SureMove Property Logbook is now up-and-running. We have produced a logbook for every client who instructs SureMove to act between midMay and the end of August at no extra cost. As soon as the property goes on the market, you just need to instruct SureMove to act for you in the conveyancing and we will produce a logbook for your property. This will include SureMove obtaining copies of the title from the Land Registry, helping you to complete your
level course, and seeing others in the office studying has made me aware of the commitment it entails and I would be more than happy to commit 110% and more!”
Advice concerning covid-19.
On a cautionary note, it is important that, if you are looking to
property questionnaires and making sure that any missing documents are obtained. Being “legally ready” for when the property is sold, could save up to four weeks off the transaction time. TIME TO
I
BY MATTHEW BIGGS - LIBERTY PARTNERSHIP LTD
think it will be fair to say the world will be a very different place, once all the restrictions are lifted and coronavirus is confined to the annals of history. And one thing humans excel at is adapting to change, as we’ve all seen in our day-today lives. That said, one thing I think we’re not very good at is embracing change!
I have made efforts to keep as similar a routine as possible, but it is proving hard to replicate. However, over time I have become more used to my ‘new’ working environment and have started to see some positives – the main one being I get to spend more time with my energetic Beagle, Albie (emphasis on the energetic!)
As most of us were confined to our homes for all of April, the way in which businesses work, ours included, had to change dramatically. Speaking from my personal experience, I struggled to adapt mentally more than anything else. I missed the routine of getting up each morning and gradually going about my morning tasks which get me in the work mindset.
38
D I S C O V E R I N G
Now we are starting to see the restrictions lift, there are plenty of changes we are all going to need to adapt to. In line with the government’s slogan, we will need to ‘stay alert’. I will need to train myself to get out of the habit of shaking friends and family by the hand when I’m able to see them again. And it will be very tough not to embrace them all with a hug after this, but
Bourne
we will need to maintain a safe two-metre distance for some time to come, I would expect. The last couple of months have been tough, but we are starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel. And although it will be a while yet until we are able to open our office door again, we have managed to make a very smooth transition to working from home. We have strived to maintain our high standards during this difficult time, as we know how important it is that our clients can contact us, as and when they need to. So, change has happened, and it will continue to do so at a fast rate – we need to embrace it together and come out the other side stronger. Stay safe!

A Good Night’s Sleep
W
ith the present lockdown, many people are spending longer with their pets and are able to observe them throughout the day. I have had several clients comment that their pets tend to wander off to a separate room for a snooze. This is perfectly normal, especially as your pet gets a little older. How much sleep your pet needs varies between species, age and breed. Cats nap regularly throughout the day but your dog needs periods of longer sleep. Just like babies, puppies need to sleep regularly. They usually have a mad half hour then crash and burn for an hour or two. It is important to let your puppy and kitten have undisturbed sleep up to eighteen hours a day. Do not wake them because they look cute and everyone wants to cuddle them – they need this rest time. Older animals vary between fourteen and eighteen hours sleep a day. Larger breeds and older dogs need to rest more, whereas younger dogs and working breeds will need less than the average. Walking and exercising your dog does not make him tired – just more fit and excited. However, with everyone staying
40

Bourne
Wise Words By Deirdre Wilson
at home, many dogs are being exercised more than normal and are missing out on their beauty sleep. All pets need a decent bed of their own. Not only is it more hygienic for your pet to have its own bed, it also allows him to have a better sleep too. Cats and small dogs love cosy little enclosed dens, whereas a bed with deep support will help older arthritic animals and will protect the joints of overweight animals too. Beds over four inches (ten centimetres) thick can be used to protect the skin from pressure sores. Having said that, some dogs find beds too warm and stretch out on cool tiles instead – as the saying goes, “you can only lead a horse to water …” Disturbed sleep can occur with changes in routine. During sleep, the hormone melatonin is released which protects cells and stimulates the immune system, so a lack of sleep reduces your pet’s ability to fight disease. Cats, especially, suffer the effects of a change of routine and more of them than is normally the case are experiencing stress cystitis in these strange times. A good night’s sleep is not just important for man, but for beast as well!

What's On
Events - June 2020
I
f you saw last month’s online magazine, then you will have seen some suggestions for keeping in touch with the arts and culture through the Internet and YouTube - if you didn’t, then check out the following for some interesting ideas. I have been watching a variety of events that have been screened especially for “lockdown”; I even watched the final of the team synchronised swimming at the Rio Olympics and was in awe of their skills! My latest foray into the virtual world was my online trip to the Members’ Day of the RHS Chelsea Flower Show.
FUNHOUSE COMEDY Have a laugh with compere Spiky Mike and guest comics every week with Funhouse Comedy Nights. You can watch live every Tuesday at 8pm or catch up via their Facebook page. Founded in 2003 by Nottingham comedian, Spiky Mike, these award-winning comedy shows have been performed at Bourne Town Hall and Stamford Arts Centre.
GET INVOLVED with Dance and Performing Arts from the local area.
Whether it’s watching fascinating interviews and classes with Grantham’s Chantry Dance Company, taking part in online classes with the Welland School of Dance or performing arts with Wildcats Theatre School, there are plenty of opportunities for various ages to keep energised and entertained with these fantastic local groups.
STAMFORD ARTS CENTRE LOCKDOWN PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION We are looking for interesting, fun, or inspiring photos that show how you, your family (and maybe even your pets) are getting on during the lockdown. Take a photo at home, in the garden or when you go outside for exercise.
Please be creative but do remember to ask the permission of anyone who appears in your photos. There will be prizes for the best entries, and we will publish entries on the Guildhall and Stamford Arts Centre website, on social media and display some in the venues for everyone to see when we all eventually return to normal. Photos can include special effects, be taken on a phone and be in either black and white 42

or in colour. To enter, please e-mail your image to boxoffice@stamfordartscentre.com or use the hashtag #skdcphoto on Instagram. Open to all ages – (under-16s please ask an adult’s permission). Deadline June 15th.
THE ROYAL OPERA HOUSE
Whether you are an opera regular or a first-timer, the Royal Opera House are streaming operas online during the lockdown and this month it is Richard Eyre’s beautiful production of La Traviata which provides the perfect setting for Verdi’s opera about a courtesan who sacrifices all for love. This is available until June 6th. Also being released in June are La Fille mal gardée, The Royal Ballet, 2005 – online premiere on June 12th at 7pm; and The Magic Flute, The Royal Opera, 2017 – online premiere on June 19th at 7pm. Visit www.roh.org.uk.
CIRQUE DU SOLEIL
Cirque du Soleil released a new one-hour spectacular on May 15th which shows some of the best moments from “Crystal” and “Axel”, the very first on-ice productions from the company. Watch world-class ice skaters and acrobats challenge the laws of gravity with never-before-seen acrobatics by visiting www.cirquedusoleil.com/cirqueconnect. There are previous shows on there as well.
THE GLOBE
Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre are streaming past performances for free. For more information, visit their website. www.shakespearesglobe.com.
GET CREATIVE at home.
Why not take part in the national Get Creative campaign? There are lots of brilliant resources to help families get creative. There are “how to” guides to make your own juggling balls, a paper lightshade, a recycled plastic bag bracelet and much, much more. Visit www.getcreativeuk.com.
