Introduction
Welcome to your August Issue Inside Highlights
Welcome to our August issue of your favourite community lifestyle magazine. As I write, the Covid-19 focus has now moved onto the facemask, and whether or not they should be compulsory. Months ago, I remember reading a newspaper article about a lady who had been cutting up one of her bras to make a face mask. The headline, of course, just had to be “Get it off your chest”! In a way, the face mask has become our new bra! It can be awkward to put on and feel uncomfortable, we don’t need to wear it around the house, but when we go outside without one on, everyone notices … especially the men! I continue to be so impressed with the many ways people in our area have pulled together, sharing and caring, all keen to come out of this horrible pandemic, stronger than before. Businesses are contacting us with their ambitious plans for a better future. Every week seems a little closer to the time when we can say that we’re back to normal. Meanwhile, let’s keep on our guard, follow the advice and keep caring for each other.
Claire x
A warm welcome to our August issue and with our articles this month you can almost hear our contributors willing us back to normality. Now, well into the summer holiday season, the wrangling over quarantine when leaving and returning to this country continues, and the word “staycation” looks like threatening “furlough” as the 2020 ‘Word of the Year’! Yes, this could be the year when more people than ever holiday in the British Isles. They could find that Margate is better than Marbella, that Lancashire trumps Lanzarote, and that Cornwall knocks spots off Corfu – but then again …! The silver lining behind our present dark COVID-cloud might be the news recently that more than a million people may have quit smoking in Britain during the pandemic. Maybe if/when the compulsory wearing of face masks, at all times, becomes law, then the remaining six million plus smokers will be forced to follow! Finally, overheard recently, following the appointment of Sir Keir Starmer as the new Labour party leader: “Anyone named after my favourite yogurt (Skyr) is going to get my vote!” Enjoy the read!

The Power of Posture BY CLAIRE GRAY, OWNER OF RENU
When we are trying to improve our fitness, we tend to focus on our weight control, energy levels and body shape - all important aspects of our health and wellbeing. Good posture is often taken for granted or considered something that will come naturally with an exercise routine.
T
he truth is that, whilst the different activities we do may be fantastic for certain areas of fitness, they do not always complement good posture. That is something you need to consider separately. Usually flexion is the enemy!
way system means that it is easy to get a good workout in the minimum time and also much easier to maintain social distancing. Pilates is specifically designed to address posture and alignment, and this is also a main focus in our Fitness Yoga class. Claire’s online “lockdown survival” classes will continue until further notice. If you would like to try them, you can find more information at www.clairegrayfitnesssolutions.co.uk.
Consider the positions you are in when driving your car, doing the gardening, ironing, cooking, cycling, sitting at a desk. Often, when we try on a new outfit, we pull our shoulders back, put our pelvis in a good position, grow tall and take a look sideways at our reflection. How great do you look?!
Here are a few exercises you can do at home to improve your posture.
1
Good posture makes you look at least half a stone slimmer, more toned and more confident. Your clothes hang much better on your body and your internal organs all settle into their correct position, meaning you breathe more efficiently and your skeletal system is in a much better alignment, causing less stress on your joints. It can also improve your digestion. Our gym is designed to ensure that you are in the best alignment when you train and work all the important postural muscles. The circuit-based one-

While you are here, squeeze your hips and lift them off the floor and then lower again. Repeat several times daily.
3
Sit on the edge of a dining room chair with your feet flat on the floor and sit up as tall as you can. Hold for a few seconds and repeat.

While you are sitting in this position, draw in your chin and squeeze your shoulder blades together and release. Repeat several times daily.

Some typical indicators of hearing problems may be asking people to repeat themselves, turning the television up, struggling to hear in noisy environments, or confusing words or misunderstanding what is being said in a conversation. It is often a friend or family member that notices beforehand. If you can identify with any of these, then it is important to book a hearing assessment to determine whether hearing loss is present, and to eliminate simple things such as earwax.
SOUND ADVICE HEARING: Open Again and Covid-19 Compliant If you have been struggling with your hearing recently and found it difficult to interact with family and friends, then contact us to have your hearing assessed in a safe and friendly environment. It is estimated that as many as 1 in 6 people in the UK have some degree of hearing loss, which equates to about ten million people in the country. Hearing loss usually occurs gradually; it can be an inconvenience, can cause embarrassment, depression, isolation, and has been linked to mental health issues. On average, it takes between ten and fifteen years to come to terms with it. This is a shame, because the ability to hear sound is one of the most important senses, yet unlike vision (or your teeth) it is often taken for granted.
This is where Sound Advice Hearing can help. We are a local independent, family business, with full-time hearing centres in Market Deeping and Kings Lynn. Contact us now to book your FREE hearing test. A New Revolutionary Hearing Aid We are pleased to announce the introduction of the latest hearing aid to take the world by storm. How Solution Focused Hypnotherapy Changes Your Brain
N
europlasticity is one of the most exciting and inspiring areas of brain science which, in simple terms, means that our wonderful human brain has the ability to change and evolve. It has the ability to grow and survive, even following significant brain trauma; where large areas of the brain have been damaged, it can regenerate itself to a point.
RAPID TRANSFORMATION HYPNOTHERAPY
it flowed without any effort at all, becoming automatic … Wow!
In the past, scientists believed that our brains were fixed; however, recent advances in neuroscience show that our brain is adaptable, a bit like plasticine, and it has the ability to change throughout our whole life.
It takes time to create those new pathways and just the same happens with our behaviours, negative or positive, and our decisions. Our brain is continually taking in new information and building new pathways and it doesn’t care if it’s a good or a bad habit, it’s learning and re-wiring all the time.
So, just for example, say we are learning a new skill such as learning to drive. Remember your first lesson? Well, for me, there was such a lot going on - the steering wheel, gearstick, clutch, navigating the busy roads, the car seemed so big and my new instructor! There was too much to take in, just overwhelming, it seemed so impossible to do! Bringing the whole thing together seemed like much of a jumble to me. Yet, after one or two lessons, it started to come together, bit by bit, simultaneously, until eventually
Paths become stronger and stronger, more resilient too, and our behaviours become moulded to how we have programmed them to be. Imagine pouring water down a brick wall. The water flows down grooves in the brickwork which it has carved out over many rainy days. The good news is that we really can make neuroplasticity work in our favour to achieve something new and make positive changes in our life, even if this ‘something new’ is
“Our brain is continually taking in new information and building new pathways”
just to go to the gym more often, make a cup of tea rather than open a bottle of wine, or simply be kinder to ourselves or others. The second piece of good news is that it is never too late to do so. Whilst children and teens have an enviously ‘plastic’ brain, we can still influence the connectivity of our grey matter well into late adulthood. In fact, my oldest client, in her late eighties, surprised herself by discovering that she’s great at oil painting! Not only that, but she CAN be assertive and selfconfident, much to the amusement of her family and friends! So, neuroplasticity can help to create an optimal environment for breaking down old unhelpful pathways and building new helpful ones. We can even generate new brain cells … if clients are up for the challenge! With intent, repetition, practice, and time for nature to do its physiological thing, it really is possible to rewire your brain!

BLOOD TYPE AND DIET Here’s the Connection!
I
f you’ve been paying attention to COVID-19 headlines lately, you may have heard that blood type may play a role in people’s susceptibility to the virus and the severity of symptoms it might produce - a way to better understand our risk, which is great! Except, what if you don’t know your blood type?
If you don’t already know your blood type, finding a record of it can be difficult – blood type isn’t on your birth certificate and is not typically listed in records from routine lab work. At the end of the day, there is nothing you can do about your blood type – it’s not a risk factor you can control in any way. But there are other risk factors that you can control, so focus your energy there instead. By following your ‘blood type diet’, you will stop constantly knocking your health by eating the wrong foods and boost your immune system to stay strong in the current circumstances. William C. Boyd, an American immunochemist, was the first researcher to identify the blood type specificity of many common dietary lectins. His findings revealed that lectins could bind to many of the carbohydrate antigens found in the gut and immune system.

ENCOURAGING WORDS: Rebekah: “I had been battling with various eating disorders since the age of 20 and trying to find a diet that worked. I went on a high protein diet that landed me in hospital with a backed up bowel. I am a blood type A and so unable to metabolize high amounts of meat! After meeting Wendy she identified that I was currently eating foods that I should avoid including coconut oil and strawberries. Since tweaking and adapting my diet I have maintained a healthy weight and now I really enjoy my food as I know that it’s exactly what my body wants.”

NEW RULES FOR ORGAN DONATION IN ENGLAND Support from Maddy’s Family
of the heart muscle where its walls become stretched and thin, affecting the heart’s ability to pump blood around the body.
I
t is three years this month since Bourne teenager, Maddy Orford, sadly passed away. The former student of Bourne Grammar School and Bourne Academy had been diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy in November 2016 and had two heart transplants before losing her brave fight on August 7th, 2017.
Keira Ball was a loving and caring young girl who died after a road traffic accident in the summer of 2017. Keira donated her kidneys, liver and heart, (which went to Max) and this donation was the inspiration for “Max and Keira’s Law”.
Both of Maddy’s parents, Barbara Spiller and Joe Orford, are keen supporters of the Organ Donation (Deemed Consent) Act which took effect on May 20th this year. Now, all adults in England are considered to have agreed to donate their own organs when they die, unless they choose to opt out.
Barbara Spiller explains, “As a result of what Maddy went through, both my immediate and extended family have registered as organ donors with the NHS. We, as a family, see Max and Kiera’s law as a very positive development and the way it’s worded now is much better, as it gives the NHS an opportunity for more transplants to take place.
Also known as “Max and Keira’s Law”, the Act is named after Cheshire boy, Max Johnson, who was diagnosed with the same condition as Maddy, a disease
Although the law has changed, family members still have to give their consent and they can opt out if they don’t want the person’s wishes to be followed through.”

Thank you to Bodrum Barbers! Lee Clark, speaking on behalf of Bourne Town Junior Under 9 Clarets football team, sends a huge thank you to Bourne’s Bodrum Barbers for their generosity during these unprecedented times, to be willing to support their local grassroots football team. Lee explains, “Teams like ours rely heavily on sponsorship and during these times and, considering the strain that COVID-19 has had on businesses, it’s really appreciated that Bodrum Barbers were still willing to support us. Thank you from our managers, (Luke and James) and all of our kids”.

back in Business (sort of) Like most businesses, Toolbar, the Bournebased charity that supports people back to work, closed its doors in March, suspending its regular Monday morning sessions indefinitely. As the furlough scheme runs down, however, and reports of massive redundancies are being announced, it is felt that their services will soon be needed, more than ever before. They are ‘opening their doors’ digitally, and this month are launching a programme of support to do what they can to help those seeking new employment. This can include CV preparation or updating, guidance on benefit claims, any local vacancies that may be listed, and access to the Kudos AD career planning software. Unfortunately, they still cannot offer the face-to-face contact that is one of the main benefits of the organisation. There are many who have missed out on the digital revolution and do not have access to the internet, but if there is any way that an unemployed person can get help with using
the internet, they are encouraged to do so. It may seem demeaning for someone who has held down a job for many years, and brought in a wage, to go cap-in-hand to a relative or friend, but almost everything is done online these days - registering with the Department for Work and Pensions, claiming benefits, searching for work and making job applications. A son, daughter, or even grandchild will usually be able to flick their fingers over the keys for them. However, anyone who needs to register as unemployed, and is unable to access the internet, can call Citizen’s Advice on 0800 1448444, where a trained volunteer will guide them through the process. For those who can use the internet, the DWP issues information on Twitter, and has two websites (‘Find a job’, and ‘Job help’) that may be useful. Toolbar issues updates on its Facebook page and can be contacted by e-mail on toolbar.bourne@ gmail.com or by phone on 07749 689026.
Lockdown images shine through in Photo Competition Heart-warming images illustrating life during the coronavirus crisis have been submitted in a special Photo Lockdown Competition run by the Guildhall, Grantham and Stamford Arts Centres. The winner of the public vote was a touching photo of ‘First visit from Grandparent in six weeks’ and a second winner was ‘Dad’s Lockdown Den’. Ben Reynolds, Stamford Arts Centre’s Box Office Supervisor thanked everyone who entered and said: “It’s so heartening to see so much love and warmth across all the entries, and lovely to see such a diverse range of photographs on different subjects.” All the entries will be featured on @Stamford and Guildhall. www.guildhallartscentre.com www.stamfordartscentre.com @stamfordarts @guildhallartscentregrantham Stamford and Guildhall Arts Centres are part of Cultural Services, South Kesteven District Council. T
he Bourne Parish Neighbourhood Plan (‘the BPNP’) provides the local community with an important opportunity to establish a vision of what they want Bourne to be like by 2036, and to develop land use planning policies that will contribute towards achieving the vision and be used to determine planning applications. The finished plan will sit alongside the South Kesteven District Council Local Plan, which was adopted in January 2020. By 2036, Bourne will be a more attractive, sustainable, vibrant and prosperous market town and parish, with a safe, healthy environment that is more resilient to climate change and
● where provisions have been made to better
cater for the needs of our community, from the very young to the very old, ● where the positive character of our heritage,
landscape and natural environment has been maintained and improved, ● where there is a thriving economy, ● where housing meets the needs
of the local community, ● where shopping and services within
the town centre are varied, ● where the visitor experience
has been enhanced, ● and where links from the town to the surrounding
areas have been maintained and improved, particularly for pedestrians and cyclists. Bourne Town Council has overall responsibility for preparing the BPNP. It has delegated this task to a Steering Group from members of the Town Council and the local community. However, we want to involve the wider community by asking for your views at key times in the process. The area covered by the plan relates not only to the town of Bourne but to the whole of the parish including Dyke, Cawthorpe, 12
Bourne
Twenty and the surrounding countryside. A comprehensive questionnaire is soon to be available online, and in hard copy, for parishioners to submit their thoughts on the key planning issues facing the parish, the draft vision and the draft objectives for the BPNP. We hope as many people as possible will take part.
PLEASE contribute your knowledge, expertise and preferences by taking part in the consultations. More information on the BPNP will be published on the Bourne Town Council website (www. bournetowncouncil.org.uk ) as it becomes available. An important part of the BPNP will be the designation of land for the development of a minimum one hundred homes, in addition to development already planned in Elsea Park and other locations. This requirement resulted from the huge opposition received by SKDC when they put forward sites on the western side of Bourne, close to Bourne Woods, for development in their draft Local Plan. The sites are being assessed and we plan to hold a public consultation to decide on the most suitable site/s at a later date. When the time comes, we hope that as many people as possible will take part in the discussions. AUGUST 2020

Words from the Mayor
COUNCILLOR COLIN PATTISON
Dear friends,
Since July’s article, we have seen further lifting of restrictions and movements - great news and more sighs of relief from more of our shop owners. We now have our pubs, hairdressers, nail bars/ beauty salons and some restaurants slowly opening up, although with some considerable operating measures in place. We are getting there slowly, folks, and by the time you read this, indoor gyms should be open (hallelujah!!) On Saturday July 4th, my wife Fiona and I were invited along to formally open a new hair and beauty salon on North Street, namely MY.Lab. Owner, Aaron Jesson, and his partner April Yardley really have ploughed everything into this exciting new business venture. We were given a tour around the salon and the attention to detail is wonderful - bright, spacious and colourful. I commend their commitment and bravery to starting up a new business in these troubled times and we wish MY.Lab many prosperous years of trading. The recent lockdown period has also seen the opening of “Dani’s”, also on North Street selling, amongst other items, clothing and gifts. Once again, good luck for the future. Even more positive news is the recent re-location of Bourne Bookshop also onto North Street. The new shop is looking fantastic and well worth a visit, and we wish Karen all the best. Sadly, most of us will have seen in the national press that JD Wetherspoons have put a hold on all new nationwide developments for what looks like a twelve-month period. This leaves us with a “grot spot” for now but, on a brighter note, we may soon be welcoming a new Italian restaurant nearby.
Civic News and Fundraising For now, it still remains very quiet on the civic duties front due to the restrictions and limitations on public gatherings and meetings. We all fear a second wave or spike from the coronavirus and are therefore unable to run any fund-raising events. Bourne Town Council continue to hold all its meetings remotely. I have recently had the opportunity to give an interview to “Lincolnshire Life” magazine and also addressed the Bourne in Business 14
Bourne
Club to promote Bourne as best we can and show how proactive we are trying to be.
Guy Cudmore Whilst wishing to keep driving the forward-looking theme of positivity for our town and parish, I now mention some sad news, that being the recent passing of former Bourne Town Councillor, Guy Cudmore. Guy served on Bourne Town Council for around six years, unselfishly giving up his time to the town, the parish and its people. He was never short of a few words and was precise and articulate. Very much an “Independent”, he had a genuine desire to contribute to the local community, and our thoughts and condolences go to his wife Rosie, all his family and friends. Stay safe and take care. PROTECTION WHEN IT MATTERS MOST If you want peace of mind that you and your family would cope financially following a death or serious illness then now is the time to consider life and critical illness insurance. According to the Association of British Insurer’s December 2019 Key Facts report, the insurance industry paid out £5.3 billion in protection claims in 2018 - an average of £14.5 million paid every day. We’ve teamed up with AIG to bring you a wide range of protection cover to help give you peace of mind should the worst ever happen. So customers can rest assured they will have financial support when they need it most.
SUE AND MARTIN’S STORY When Sue Ansell became critically ill, it was a tough time for the whole family. Husband Martin, pensions expert at NFU Mutual, explains why having protection cover was vital. “Around 25 years ago, Sue and I were moving to another house, so we increased our mortgage to £72,000. “We were asked if we would like to protect ourselves, not just in the event of dying, but also in the event of a critical illness. We thought it unlikely that both of us would ever have a critical illness at the same time so we decided to do half, £36,000 as this would cover half of the mortgage should anything happen. “Sometime later, Sue began to feel unwell. She would lose the ability to speak or understand people — just for a minute or two. We had it investigated, and the hospital told us it was a tumour in the brain, and it would kill her unless we allowed the doctors to operate. At the time, you’re facing the uncertainty of the tumour, the operation, the children — the last thing you want, on top of all that, is to have financial worry. “Luckily, the critical illness cover did exactly what it said on the tin. It gave us a lump sum that allowed us to rely on one income rather than the two.
“The pressure of the mortgage was eased and it took away such a great part of the worries we faced. “Thankfully Sue has made a recovery. She is able to live her life and do the things that really matter, like seeing her kids grow up. “You can’t insure against emotional problems but you can insure against financial ones. Do what you can afford and review it regularly.”
YOU NEED TO KNOW Critical illness cover provides protection for illnesses and conditions specified in the policy. NFU Mutual Financial Advisers advise on AIG Life protection products.

Book Review
Too Much and Never Enough
Dear NHS
How my family created the world’s most dangerous man
EDITED BY ADAM KAY
100 Stories to Say Thank You
BY MARY L. TRUMP In this revelatory, authoritative portrait of Donald J. Trump and the toxic family that made him, Mary L. Trump, a trained clinical psychologist and Donald’s only niece, shines a bright light on the dark history of their family in order to explain how her uncle became the man who now threatens the world’s health, economic security and social fabric. Mary Trump spent much of her childhood in her grandparents’ large, imposing house in New York, where Donald and his four siblings grew up. She describes a nightmare of traumas, destructive relationships and a tragic combination of neglect and abuse. She explains how specific events and general family patterns created the damaged man who currently occupies the Oval Office. A first-hand witness, Mary brings an incisive wit and unexpected humour to sometimes grim, often confounding, family events. Numerous pundits, armchair psychologists and journalists have sought to explain Donald Trump’s lethal flaws. Mary Trump has the education, insight and intimate familiarity needed to reveal what makes Donald, and the rest of her clan, tick.
Curated and edited by Adam Kay (author of multi-million bestseller “This is Going to Hurt”). “Dear NHS” features one hundred inspirational people who have come together to share their stories of how the National Health Service has been there for them and changed their lives in the process. By turns deeply moving, hilarious, hopeful and impassioned, these stories together become a love letter to the NHS and the 1.4 million people who go above, and beyond, the call of duty every single day - selflessly, generously, putting others before themselves, never more so than now. They are all heroes, and this book is our way of saying thank you. Contributors include: Peter Kay, Dawn French, Joanna Lumley, Sir Michael Palin, Steven Fry, Graham Norton, Dame Julie Walters and David Tennant and many more. All profits from this book will go to NHS Charities Together to fund vital research and projects, and The Lullaby Trust which supports bereaved parents of babies and young children.
Diary of an Awesome Friendly Kid Rowley Jefferson’s Journal BY JEFF KINNEY A “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” story that will have you rolling with laughter, from number one bestselling author, Jeff Kinney! Hi, my name is Rowley Jefferson, and this is my book. Now I have a diary just like my friend Greg... Rowley’s best friend Greg Heffley has chronicled his middle-school years in thirteen “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” journals.
Now it’s Rowley’s turn to give his side of the story. But Rowley has agreed to tell Greg’s story along the way, too. (After all, Greg says one day he will be rich and famous, and the world will need to know how he managed it). But Rowley’s stories about Greg might not be quite what his friend had in mind...

GET ON THE MOVE WITH
A
lot has happened since the last issue of Discovering Bourne; lockdown restrictions have been lifted and, more importantly for SureMove Property Lawyers and those wishing to move home, the housing market restarted and is extremely busy. This is great news for SureMove, our clients and for the economy. The Chancellor’s recent “Stamp Duty Holiday” announcement was eagerly awaited and has given a boost to those considering
20
buying a new property. There is a real feeling of positivity in the housing market. Builders are back on site and are finishing properties that were originally due to be completed during lockdown, so lots of clients are getting their keys to their brand-new properties and finally moving in. We have also seen many of those files that were “put on hold” during lockdown come back to life. There is certainly no “doom and gloom” as some “experts” had predicted. People will always move home and, whilst there may be bumps
Bourne
along the way, property has, and always will be, a great investment. In the UK we love owning our own properties and the current situation won’t change that!
The home moving and conveyancing process has adapted and evolved quite rapidly during lockdown.
It seems clients do not need a client meeting to sign their paperwork but are happy to have a telephone or video meeting and deal with the majority of correspondence by e-mail. We are using technology to ID clients AUGUST 2020
and finding that the whole process is running very smoothly. We are fully operational; some of the staff are back in the office, but, in order to comply with health safety measures and social distancing, some are still working from home. For the safety of both our staff and clients, like many businesses, we are currently operating a ‘locked door policy’.
The government currently has lots of schemes in place to assist buyers, from the Help
to Buy scheme, Lifetime ISAs, Help to Buy ISAs and their latest planned housing scheme, First Homes. This offers a 30% discount on first homes to key workers, enabling them to be able to afford a home in their area, rather than being forced to look elsewhere due to increasing prices. Lenders are increasing their borrowing options, once again offering mortgages to people with a 10% deposit; rates are becoming more competitive and interest rates are low. There really are lots of great opportunities to purchase or re-mortgage your current property.
We are really excited to report that two of our newest recruits started an apprenticeship scheme with SureMove on June
1st 2020, training to become qualified property lawyers. One of our apprentices, Kiera, joined SureMove at the beginning of 2019 and said, “ I am so touched that throughout this tough time of lockdown you have acknowledged my drive to learn, better myself and my career at SureMove … I definitely feel my year at SureMove has given me
The SureMove Property Logbook is now up-and-running. We have produced a logbook for every client who instructs SureMove to act between now and the end of August at no extra cost. As soon as the property goes on the market, you just need to instruct SureMove to act for you in the conveyancing and we will produce a logbook for your property. This will include SureMove obtaining copies of the title from the Land Registry, helping you to complete your
the tools to prepare for a degree level course, and seeing others in the office studying has made me aware of the commitment it entails and I would be more than happy to commit 110% and more!”
Advice concerning COVID-19 On a cautionary note, it is important that, if you are looking to
property questionnaires and making sure that any missing documents are obtained. Being “legally ready” for when the property is sold, could save up to four weeks off the transaction time. Having waited so long to get your property on the market, this can only be a good thing. Please contact us for more details on 01778 420670 or e-mail suremoveplb@suremove.uk.com sell or buy, that you understand the new rules involved; professionals visiting your home; what to do before or after viewings; and how to prepare and move your belongings. We have prepared a checklist which includes all the information you will need to make that move a ‘SureMove’!

Your Garden
August Gardening Tips
A
ugust is the month when you reap the fruits of your labour and hopefully you will have a bumper harvest. In fact, sometimes you have far more than you can eat but there are several ways of preserving the fruit and vegetables for use through the winter months.
Several root vegetables store well in a cool, ventilated spot such as a shed or garage. Root crops, such as carrots and parsnips should have their leaves and loose soil removed and then put into layers of damp sand. Potatoes should be dried off in the sun and then stored in hessian sacks. I went to the local fish and chip shop and they gave me their old paper potato bags! There are not many things you can sow or plant now for harvesting this year, maybe salad leaves, a last planting of carrots or turnips and some leafy vegetables such as chard. However, as space becomes available when crops finish, you can plant overwintering crops such as Brussels sprouts, spring cabbage and winter cauliflowers. Cabbage seeds can be planted in a temporary bed or in pots or modules; remember to cover them with nets to keep off the birds and caterpillars. • Prune gooseberry and currant bushes. • Strawberry runners that have been potted can be transplanted into a sunny, fertile spot where you have not grown them for at least three years. Planting them through plastic will help conserve moisture and provide warmth during the winter.

• Make sure that you harvest courgettes regularly, before they grow too large. • Cut to the ground all summer-fruiting raspberry canes that have borne fruit this year and tie in the new green canes that will produce next year’s fruit. • Tomatoes, pumpkins and squash need feeding with a tomato fertiliser. • Outdoor tomatoes should have their growth stopped by the middle of the month – nip out the leading growing shoot just above the highest truss. Continue pinching out and do not forget to provide support for the plants as they become more heavily laden – also for cucumbers, peppers and even fruit trees. • Keep earthing up potatoes to prevent the tubers being exposed and also brassicas to support unsteady stems. • Dig over any spaces that have been left from harvesting crops, where you could grow ‘green manure’, such as clover or vetch, which will provide nitrogen for the soil, or alfalfa, cress or mustard which will help break up the soil. • Pinch out the tops of climbing beans when they reach the top of the canes, as this will encourage growth lower down, and harvest regularly before they become tough and stringy: you can let some grow on to produce bean seeds for next year. • Be on the lookout for potato blight, especially if the weather is damp and humid. Cut off the stems at ground level as soon as you see the tell-tale brown fungal patches. This prevents the blight reaching the tubers. Enjoy!

Property News
Lincolnshire’s Finest! We are delighted to announce that we have won the ESTAS award for the
Best Letting Agent in Lincolnshire! But what are the ESTAS…? The ESTAS are the Estate Agent of the Year awards, which is an annual nationwide event. This year, they were held ‘virtually’ and we are delighted to have been announced as winners! Their mission is to highlight great service provided by different firms in the residential property sector. Who votes towards the awards? The awards are based on genuine customer reviews; therefore, we thank each and every one of our landlords and tenants for voting for us. Property transactions are unlike any other retail transaction, so it is critical that reviews are submitted by clients who have gone through a full service experience. Their strict verification process ensures new clients can trust their reviews.
BY JASON TREADWELL, MANAGING DIRECTOR
What are our aims for next year? To maintain our status as the Best Letting Agent in Lincolnshire and continue to provide a high level of service to all our landlords and tenants. Can you change your Letting Agent? Yes, you can! Many landlords believe that, to change agents, you must wait until the end of an existing tenancy, which is not the case. A tenancy agreement is a contract between the landlord and the tenant; changing agent does not affect the legal rights of either. If a Letting Agent has not been delivering on service, it is likely that the tenant will be pleased that the management is changing, and they may be more likely to stay in the property longer. Once you have given your agent written notice that you would like to leave, we will take it from there! If you are a landlord or tenant and are unhappy with your current Letting Agent, then do not hesitate to contact us. To speak with our award-winning lettings team, please contact us on 01778 422567!

t Double and Megson in Bourne, we have been working through the pandemic, albeit remotely. The world is now coming ‘back to life’, following a time of many clients having to be at home furloughed or by reference to their health conditions. We have been taking instructions on many matters though, sometimes arranging new wills through windows, but whilst still socially distancing. Everyone hopes that society can now move on without the risk of a so called “second wave” of coronavirus. We have conducted court hearings and meetings either by telephone or Zoom. This particular option is likely to become more popular, moving forward, as the government tries to reduce court attendance in person. It will still be necessary in many cases, none more so than at the Crown Court. Any change to using
more technology is likely to be slow though, and the court buildings that we still have are likely to be used for a long time yet. Whatever changes do come, perhaps moving to digitalising some documents for example, we shall respond to it. Double and Megson has been in the town of Bourne for over forty years, caring for our clients and their legal needs, sometimes three generations of the same family. We prefer a down-to-earth approach to sometimes complex or unusual matters, but which are always extremely important to our clients. We can help you with your legal needs, whether it be propertybased (perhaps buying and selling); how property should be organised and administered; family relationship difficulties; wills and Lasting Power of Attorney or estates; dispute resolution or litigation; or employment and business. We look forward to seeing you soon to assist you with your needs. In the meantime, we trust that you shall “Stay Safe”.

utdoor living” is a phrase that perfectly sums up the nature of our terrace sun protection systems. When the sun comes out, people are readily inclined to open all the doors and windows or go outdoors to enjoy the pleasant weather.

But why would you stop at that? Increasing numbers of people opt to bring this sense of the outdoors into their own home, or at least a little closer. Just think how wonderful it could be, spending a little longer sitting outdoors with your family or
a few close friends in summertime. The barbecue can be left on for a while, as the cork on the last bottle gets popped. This allows you to savour the sense of the great outdoors in your own garden. Our sun protection systems significantly boost your outdoor life … without a doubt!

LET’S TALK ABOUT THE ‘R’ WORD!
A
BY MATTHEW BIGGS - LIBERTY PARTNERSHIP LTD
s we are now fully into a ‘new normal’, a lot of people are taking this chance to review where they are and, more importantly, what they are now going to do as we move forward.
There is no denying we have all been impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. Although we have all been affected in different ways, we are now all in the same position … what to do next? As the economy is re-opening a lot of people who were furloughed are now, hopefully, returning to the workplace. The selfemployed will have seen an uptick in their work, as the restrictions have been lifted. But I wonder how many of you had a taste of time away from work and thought, “I quite like this”?

Here, at Liberty Partnership, we have been fortunate enough to work relatively normally during the entire lockdown period and we have certainly seen a shift in clients’ attitudes. In the past, many would come to us with the thought of retirement still being far into the distance, but not anymore. We have spoken to many clients about retirement and, to the surprise of a lot of them, the fact is that it is achievable … and much sooner than they thought! If you are one of the many people who now likes the idea of ‘winding down’ towards retirement, and would like to know what is achievable, then please contact our office on 01778 342291 to arrange a FREE initial consultation with one of our friendly and experienced Financial Planners.

Stamp Duty Land Tax: Temporary Reduced Rates Residential Rates on purchases from July 8th 2020 to March 31st 2021. If you purchase a residential property between these dates, you only start to pay SDLT on the amount that you pay for the property above £500,000. These rates apply whether you are buying your first home or have owned property before. You can use the table to work out the SDLT due: Property or lease premium or transfer value - SDLT rate • Up to £500,000 - Zero • The next £425,000 (the portion from £500,001 to £925,000) - 5% • The next £575,000 (the portion from £925,001 to £1.5 million) - 10% • The remaining amount (the portion above £1.5 million) - 12% From July 8th 2020 to March 31st 2021 the special rules for first-time buyers are replaced by the reduced rates set out above. Higher rates for additional properties. The 3% higher rate for purchases of additional dwellings applies on top of revised standard rates above for this same period.
Consumer Spending Linked to Housing Market Confidence ● Super Saturday, marking the reopening of hairdressers, pubs, bars, cafes and restaurants in England, saw an increase in high street footfall. PwC reports on money in consumers’ pockets – consumer spending trends are closely linked to housing market confidence. ● There was a 20% weekly increase in footfall on Saturday and after 5pm this rose to 36%. However, overall number of visits to the high street in England is down 56% on last year. ● PwC reported an increase in consumer sentiment in June, the majority of households so far unaffected financially and 1 in 5 households are saving money. ● With more money in consumers’ pockets, VAT reductions for the hospitality industry, creation of the eat out to help scheme, we hope high street footfall will continue to increase. However, much hangs on employment levels after furlough ends in October. Source: Dataloft, PwC

Consumer Advice Ensure Post-Lockdown Doorstep Scammers Don’t Give You the Summertime Blues by Eileen Le Voi at Safe Local Trades
The End of the Blame Game
A
t long last, after many years of campaigning by family lawyers, the Divorce, Dissolution and Separation Bill has received royal assent. It will not, however, be in force until 2021, (hopefully earlier rather than later next year). What it will mean is that divorcing couples will no longer have to make a choice about who should be the one raising unreasonable behaviour allegations against the other or accusing the other of adultery. At the moment, the only way you can avoid blaming the other spouse, if you want to start divorce proceedings, is to wait for two years and then obtain the other party’s consent. There will still be a waiting period from when the couple first indicate their intention to divorce, but a matter of months, not years. You will then simply need to pronounce the fact that you consider the marriage has irretrievably broken down and not have to provide any further explanation. Family law professionals are optimistic that this neutral start to the end of a marriage will pave the way to much less antagonistic and stressful proceedings, through to a consent finance order and agreeing arrangements for the children. Your family law specialist will keep you informed about the progress of the legislative changes and of the earliest opportunity when you can file for a divorce under the new procedure, once you have sadly decided that this is necessary.

Bourne March
Over the past few months, the COVID-19 lockdown has halted life for so many people, not least the doorstep rogue traders. However, as the restrictions continue to be eased, the fraudsters have once again begun to make life a misery for the elderly and the vulnerable, who are being caught off guard by Coronavirus scammers. Many people have been waiting weeks and weeks to have their windows cleaned, garden spruced up, property exterior painted or driveway re-paved. Whatever the job – big or small – don’t be tempted to give the work to someone who cold calls you at your home, claiming to be ‘carrying out similar work in the area’. Firstly, they have caught you unawares, a time when you don’t really have time to think and make an informed decision; they can be very persuasive. Secondly, any offer which appears too good to be true often is. Common reports include: • Taking a deposit and never returning to do the work. • Quoting a price and then increasing the cost as the job progresses. • No statutory cancellation notices, guarantees or warranties provided. • Producing poor quality work and refusing to sort out problems or finish the work. Avoiding Rogue Traders Advice: 1) Be cautious; if a trader knocks at your door, do not agree to on-the-spot house repairs without taking advice. Say 'no thank you' and close the door. 2) Be wary of special offers. They will use tactics such as “I am only in your area today and would need to do the work now.” 3) Do not believe when told that guttering, roofing, gardening or paving work is in need of urgent repair – this may cause you to panic and allow the work to take place. 4) Do not allow anyone to pressure you into agreeing to have work carried out. If you ask them to leave and they don't, they are committing a criminal offence – contact the police on 999. 5) Do not make snap decisions. If you feel that any work needs carrying out on your property, take time to talk to family or neighbours before you make a decision. 6) Don't ever go to a bank or cash point with a trader; legitimate traders would never do this! Local History
Letters from Long Ago! In the late 1890s, the magnificent Hanthorpe House, near Morton (featured in last month’s Local History feature) was in the hands of the Parker family.
F
or a while, LieutenantColonel William Parker II was in London, where, one day, he was to receive dramatic news from Mr J Allen who, at the time was his gamekeeper/ gardener at Hanthorpe House. The contents of the letter concern a Mrs Robey who, according to
the Census of 1901, was a tenant at Hanthorpe House. She was not afraid to stand up for herself when faced with a local, whose “delight on a shiny night in the season of the year” would appear to have been a bit of poaching! A transcript of the letter follows, (and how we lovers of the Lincolnshire dialect warm to … “ask him wot hee was a doing thear”!)
July 15 Hanthorpe Col Parker Sir Mss. Robey was out shooting on Satuarday night near Spring Wood shee saw som one screeping up the wood side in Mr Horns (?) feild it was found out that it was Bradfoot the Blacksmith of Morton shee went too him and ask him wot hee was a doing thear with a gunn she sais hee begun calling her hee said hee wold level her to the ground and then rund away shee maid know more to doo but shot after Him thear was 4 or 5 stray shot enterd the Back of is neck and I have been wating to hear som think a bout it the Police Sergant from Bourne came over to day to see wot Mss. Robey Had to say a bout it (?) Robey went to London on Tuesday hee as not got Back I hav not heard aney think more so I thought I wold let you know Sir, Rowlett wished mee say wen I wrote that is quarters rent was dew to you next week – was hee to hand it over to mee or send it to you sir.
The following transcript clearly highlights the difference between those people in Victorian society who would have had the benefit of a formal education and those who would not. Hanthorpe House Bourne, Lincolnshire Feb. 23rd. 1891. Gentlemen I beg to recommend to your favourable consideration the application of Robert Spencer of Morton for the situation of Manager of the Guthram Engine. Having had 15 years’ experience in a similar situation in Morton Fen, he has a thorough knowledge of his duties, and is, as I have every reason to believe, a steady, sober and industrious man. I am, gentlemen,
I remain your obidident servant
Yours faithfully W Parker.
J Allen

In February 1891, the same Lieutenant-Colonel Parker wrote to the Trustees of the Bourne Fen Drainage, endorsing the application from a Robert Spencer of Morton for the position of Manager at the Guthram Pump Engine, (on the Bourne to Spalding Road, just beyond Twenty).

Edith Neal
opular Bourne resident and shop proprietor, Edith Neal, passed away recently at the age of ninety. For many Bourne people, Edith Neal was a very familiar face, serving customers in Neal’s Hairdressers and Tobacconists onwards from the 1960s and, when not serving customers, she would often be seen chatting to passers -by as she swept and cleaned the shop frontage on South Street.
a nursing career while serving with the WRAF. After a chance meeting with Denis Neal in the queue for Bourne cinema, they went on to marry in 1950. Moving back to Bourne, they established Neal’s Hairdressers and brought up Kelvin, Keith and Pauline.
Edith was extremely proud of her Yorkshire roots, being one of five daughters and four sons to a North Yorkshire hill farmer and his wife.
It was her love of keyboard / organ music that led her in the 1980s to found Bourne Organ Club, along with a small group of enthusiasts. Bourne Corn Exchange became the venue for regular organ concerts, with renowned organists from around the UK and Europe coming to perform.
After finishing school, she pursued

Gerald Wells
ourne resident, Gerald Wells died peacefully at home on April 12th, 2020, aged eighty-three. Born in Grantham, he started his career in engineering as an apprentice at Aveling and Barford’s and quickly moved up the career ladder to the design office. He changed careers and became a well-respected and loved teacher of CDT for twenty-six years at The Aveland School, Billingborough, from when it opened in 1963. Many of his pupils still live in the Bourne area and have fond memories of his teaching, ably assisted
by “Ted Bear”, who would sit at the top of the blackboard, and whose motto was “I want work not excuses”!
A much-loved gentleman, Gerald will be missed by all who knew him.
Gerald’s love of dancing will also be remembered for he taught many Bourne residents to dance; he held monthly dances with big bands supplying the music. He also taught archery and chess. Gerald never seemed to grow old and was affectionately known as ‘Peter Pan’ by the family. He would often be asked by ex-pupils, “Morning Sir, how come you never look a day older from when you taught me?”

Colitis
These Unsettling Times Can Unsettle Your Dog
V
ery commonly these days, owners are worried about their dog’s toilet habits. Many’s the time I’ve had a variety of pictures (or containers!) presented to me showing the kind of messes that owners have to clear up. But why now in this time of lockdown and uncertainty? Very often, it is due to a condition of the bowel known as colitis, which is a term for inflammation of the colon, the last segment of the digestive tract. The chief symptom of colitis is splattery diarrhoea featuring mucus, fresh blood, or both. The stool may start normal then finish soft or may seem gooey throughout. There is often accompanying cramps, gas, and immediate urgency (“When you’ve gotta go, you’ve gotta go!”) Vomiting can also be common. Colitis may only last a few days but can be chronic, lasting weeks or months on end. Most of the nutrients have already been absorbed from the food by the time the undigestible leftovers have passed down to the colon. The colon has three functions: absorbing water, storing stool, and further digesting unabsorbed nutrients. The bacterial population in the colon is about ten times denser than that of the small intestine and these are often referred to as ‘good’ bacteria. A diagnosis of colitis is generally straightforward given the above classic findings, though
50
Bourne
Wise Words By Deirdre Wilson
how to proceed depends on the signs.
Acute colitis is usually down to stress or a dietary indiscretion. Changes in your pet’s pack can cause stress – you may be furloughed or have school children at home all the time when normally your dog will have its ‘downtime’. Tensions at home can be picked up by your dog and, of course, you need to keep an eye on everyone who may slip your pet the odd treat! Treatment of acute colitis is fairly simple, but it may recur after lockdown when, again, the dynamics of your family will change.
Chronic colitis involves much more investigation to get to the root of the problems and may even involve surgery or colonoscopy to reach a diagnosis. Treatment with probiotics and a short course of antibiotics are usually enough to settle a bout of colitis. For others, food elimination diets are necessary to investigate which foodstuffs cause the disease. Surprisingly, chicken protein is being found as a factor in colitis as much as cereal proteins. However, it may also be necessary to start dogs on steroids to reduce the inflammation in the colon, and some dogs need to be kept on these lifelong to keep the bowel healthy. As always, prevention is better than cure, so try to gently wean your dog back to pre-Covid routines - just as we are doing for ourselves.

Clubs
Bourne U3A
Pandemic, O.A.P.s, I.T. and Friendship Bourne U3A has a membership in excess of five hundred, of whom a majority would fall into the government's “at risk” or “seriously vulnerable” category - though a good many would dispute this, claiming fitness to match some fifty year olds! There are however two undeniable truths about Bourne U3A: • Its success relies on social contact between members at all levels and in its numerous interest groups. • A large percentage of the membership were not as exposed to Information Technology until later in their careers as later generations have been. So how has this local group coped with little social contact during lockdown? Well, the committee went ZOOM! Having been helped by the more computer-savvy committee members (and probably a grandchild or two), they have met regularly on Zoom to carryout the routine administration, to plan a response to the pandemic and to plan a safe restart strategy for when lockdown comes to an end. All parts of the organisation in Bourne have worked hard to stay in touch with our members. Our monthly newsletter has been temporarily replaced
54
by a fortnightly bulletin, “The Viral Times” which, apart from news, a quiz and jokes, carried information of a photography and gardening competition, open to all members. A delivery service was established to ensure that members not on the internet received hard copies of each edition. Group Leaders have been in contact with members of their groups and we have used our website to pass on advice on how to cope with the pandemic as well as sending e-mails from the chairman. By using Information Technology some of our groups have continued to operate. ‘Science and Technology’ hold fortnightly meetings on Zoom with members providing short talks on various interests or career-related activities. ‘Wine Appreciation’ and one of the ‘Creative Writing’ groups have also met using Zoom and, as the lockdown has eased in recent weeks, the ‘Painting and Drawing’ and the ‘Birdwatching’ groups have met in sociallydistanced outdoor settings.
Bourne
Our biggest IT event yet is planned for Monday August 17th when, again using Zoom, we will hold a General Meeting for up to one hundred members. The meeting will follow the usual format; our current chairman, Malcolm Scriven, will give a talk, “Living in Qatar”, followed by notices. This is particularly appropriate given the location of the 2022 Football World Cup. The greatest strength of Bourne U3A has always been the friendships between its members. Many people join U3A having recently retired, recently moved to Bourne or, sadly, having lost close relatives. The friendships in individual groups that have formed over the years have come to the fore during this difficult time, when a simple chat on the phone was all that was possible, but it changed and improved the day for that individual. One of the oldest forms of technology, a telephone, a good friend and a nice natter - human contact at its simplest and most effective! AUGUST 2020
