Introduction

Welcome to your November Issue A warm welcome to our penultimate issue of the year … and what a year it has been! Back in January, there was a one-liner doing the rounds: “How do I know what this year’s going to bring? I haven’t got 20/20 vision!” Little did anyone realise … ! We’ll have all learned many things this year: just how an hour of exercise during lockdown can be so beneficial; how a group of sewing-machines and their wonderful operatives can produce so much fabulous PPE in record time; and how everyone now realises the immense value of our NHS, hoping that all of those “Thursday evening clapathons” will not be forgotten, once the pay rounds begin! The list could go on, with all of our educators and “key workers” deserving immense praise too. This month, we see many references on our pages to Christmas, barely ten weeks away, and so there is hopefully some bright light for us all, as we peer through this (admittedly very gloomy) tunnel! I hope you are all keeping safe and sane, and that our magazine can help you through these troubling times.

Claire x

So, they warned us about a second spike in the virus and, at the time of writing, all the statistics are indeed going the wrong way. It’s sad to see so much being disrupted, including this month’s traditional Remembrance Day services and “poppy collections”. The customary, accelerating pre-Christmas fervour and countdown to the big day has hardly surfaced yet, with concerns over whether restrictions on gatherings will actually rule out that big Christmas dinner, with all the family around the table, whilst returning students may have to be quarantined in their rooms! Yet, there is still optimism out there, as our wonderful contributors and advertisers continue their battles for survival in these trying times. A number of new businesses are appearing each month in our towns, and surely, the downturn will soon be here! And finally, a little something to keep the spirits up, (and before you see them in your Christmas crackers!) • This Covid business is nothing new. The Russian physician, Ivor Chestikov was treating the composer DryCoughsky years ago. • If Covid-19 has forced you or a loved one to wear a mask with your spectacles, call our help-line - you may be entitled to condensation! Enjoy the read.

Central to the “Irnham Country-Estate Package” The summer of 2020 has been a disaster for many. Some good was bound to come from it though, and so it proved to be for the ebullient Jamie (a.k.a. Sir James Benton-Jones) and the family estate in the beautiful village of Irnham, between Bourne and Grantham.

I

f you happen to be running Irnham Hall and 2,000 acres of prime farming estate (and landlord of many of the properties making up the village, including The Griffin Inn) then drastic times call for drastic measures. These included opening parts of the estate to the general public in a ‘socially-distanced’ way, with picnic tables fifty yards apart!

The role played by The Griffin Inn is central in the “Irnham countryestate package” which has been several years in the making.

So, always keen to be meeting people in his very amiable manner (as evidenced by the seven years in which Jamie and his wife Leila have been hosting wedding ceremonies in the idyllic setting of Irnham Hall), the grounds were opened up all through the summer … and so “The Irnham Picnic” was born! I have been fortunate enough to experience this quintessentially English experience several times during the lockdown and I now long for 2021 when, Jamie assures me, the opportunity will be repeated. The delicious food, prepared by Head Chef, Michael Prescott at The Griffin, is collected and then taken to the picnic tables, dotted around the landscaped gardens and beside the lake – a magnificent venue! Despite the vagaries of our English summer weather, the “Irnham Picnic” proved to be a success during such awful times for the hospitality sector in general. The “Irnham Wedding” experience, which our family had found absolutely faultless the previous year, has unfortunately been a notable victim of the pandemic. It is with excitement, therefore, that Jamie informs me that they are already fully booked for wedding receptions in 2021. 4

Bourne

The idea has been to offer the marriage service in the small church (if required) right next to Irnham Hall, which is a short walk to the reception in the beautifully appointed and spacious Orangery, with its gardens and ornamental pond. Several cottages have been renovated in recent years in the village and are made available for wedding guests. The Griffin has been totally refurbished, both the bar and eating area as well as the six luxurious bedrooms, and can now fulfil its role as the potential pre-nuptial venue for bride and groom, as well as accommodation for guests too. Jamie is very keen that The Griffin should act as the central ‘beating heart’ of the village, and the excellent reputation built by Head Chef, Michael Prescott, at both The Cholmeley Arms at Burton Coggles and at Belvoir Castle, means that many people are making the journey for a first-rate meal in such a friendly, welcoming setting. Ever the one to add to the sum total of what Irnham has to offer, Jamie explains how there is to be a fish and chip shop at the back of The Griffin, opening this month! For more information, Jamie encourages everyone to access his You Tube performances to fully appreciate, not just the beauty of Irnham, but also the ways he wants to share it with us all. Recipe

TOFFEE APPLES Toffee apples are popular at this time of the year and the kids will love helping to decorate them with their favourite sweets and treats!

Ingredients 10 wooden skewers (or lolly sticks) 10 Golden Delicious apples, scrubbed 350g Fairtrade light soft brown sugar 2 tsp white wine vinegar

2020

Served Tuesdays to Saturdays 12noon-2pm and 6pm-8.00pm £24.50 for 3 Courses £17.95 for 2 Courses £11.95 for 1 Course Add a Coffee for £1.20 extra

Starters Leek and Potato Soup with a Crusty Bread Duck Liver Parfait with Melba Toast and Cumberland Sauce Goats Cheese and Caramelised Red Onion Bruschetta

35g unsalted English butter 2 tbsp golden syrup To decorate, why not try sugar stars, crushed ginger snap biscuits, chocolate M&Ms, sprinkles or bits of popcorn?

Method • Insert a wooden skewer or lolly stick into the stalk end of each apple. Line a large baking tray with baking parchment. • Put the sugar in a heavy-based pan with 120ml cold water and heat gently, stirring until it dissolves. Bring to the boil and add the vinegar, butter and golden syrup. Boil gently for 12 minutes, until it has reached the soft-crack stage (138°C on a sugar thermometer, or the point at which a little of the mixture, dropped into cold water, forms threads that bend slightly before breaking). • Dip the bottom two-thirds of the apple in the toffee, turning to coat. Working quickly, get the children to add their decoration of choice to each apple. Leave to set on the baking parchment for 15 minutes.

Let’s Drink to That!

T

hirstBourne is an online bottle shop, specialising in microbrewery beer, brewed and delivered within a 25-mile radius of Bourne. Frustrated during the lockdown at the difficulty to get quality local beer, and with time to reflect, a plan formed to follow my fascination with beer and smallscale independent brewing. So born of thirst, ThirstBourne was born! In my opinion, there is nothing better than a cask conditioned ale from the hand pump of a decent pub. However, if you can’t get to the pub or just want a drink at home, then a bottle of hand-crafted beer is what you need. You can’t buy this range of beers in the supermarkets; many beers on their shelves labelled “craft” are mass produced (so about as “crafty” as Coke or Pepsi!) You just can’t make quality beer that cheaply, unless it is brewed on a colossal scale. ThirstBourne gives customers the choice of enjoying real local craft beer at home.

The ThirstBourne website also has information about the beer and breweries. Customers can buy individual beers, curated mixed cases, gift packs and snacks on our website with secure payment. Once ordered, the beer will be delivered personally, within a few working days - like a beer milkman! ThirstBourne customers will be excited by the number and range available, from intensely hoppy IPAs to strong imperial porters, all hand crafted by local independent brewers. So, if you are interested in beer, or know somebody who is, “hop” on to the website and spread the word! Cheers!!

Here at ThirstBourne we want you to enjoy great beer from our local microbreweries at home, as well as in the pub

We’re here because you can’t buy this range of hand crafted beers in the supermarket!

If you are lucky enough to live within 25 miles of Bourne, we’ll even deliver to your door.

Reading is such a thirsty business, hop on our website to learn more…

War Lord BY BERNARD CORNWELL The epic story of how England was made concludes in “War Lord”, the magnificent finale to the Last Kingdom series. After years fighting to reclaim his rightful home, Uhtred of Bebbanburg has returned to Northumbria. With his loyal band of warriors and a new woman by his side, his household is secure - yet Uhtred is far from safe. Beyond the walls of his impregnable fortress, a battle for power rages. To the south, King AEthelstan has unified the three kingdoms of Wessex, Mercia and East Anglia - and now eyes a bigger prize. To the north, King Constantine and other Scottish and Irish leaders seek to extend their borders and expand their dominion. Caught in the eye of the storm is Uhtred. Threatened and bribed by all sides, he faces an impossible choice: stay out of the struggle, risking his freedom, or throw himself into the cauldron of war and the most terrible battle Britain has ever experienced. Only fate can decide the outcome.

Because of You BY DAWN FRENCH The old millennium turns into the new. In the same hospital, two very different women give birth to two very similar daughters. Hope leaves with a beautiful baby girl. Bringing a New Concept into the Old ‘Concept’ Shop!

A

novel approach to trading has appeared on Bourne’s North Street with the opening, at the end of September, of Clarabelle’s. Local mum, Samantha Oliphant, has taken the ambitious step of creating her new concept in the premises where the popular gift shop, ‘Concept’ once operated. Clarabelle’s gives you two “selling” options; the first offering you £1 per kilo for any of your unwanted, good quality, clean clothing, shoes and bags, which will then be sold on to the public. A free collection service from within Bourne is available, so here’s a great opportunity to off-load those bags of pre-loved items which you were maybe thinking of “carbooting” or selling online.

T. 07548 581300 E. clarabelles35b@yahoo.com NOVEM B ER 2020

The second option is where you actually present your items for eight weeks for Samantha to sell on your behalf. She will offer 50% commission on their sale, and anything not finding a home will be bundled up and sent away by Samantha, with the ensuing money raised going to local charities, the first one already nominated as ‘Don’t Lose Hope’. Besides the trading in pre-loved clothing, Clarabelle’s is also offering a variety of new and crafted items such as garden accessories like planters and feeders, and other hand-made products like greetings cards, with this list likely to grow much bigger in future.

Help is at Hand with “Beating the Blues” Covid-19 has left many of us feeling a bit down and anxious about the future. “Beating the Blues” is an innovative interactive online cognitive behavioural therapy programme that can offer you help, hope and an emotionally healthier future, having been approved for treating depression and anxiety by the NHS. Anxiety, depression and low mood are increasingly common in the UK right now, with many people worried about job security, money, isolation and unemployment, as well as loneliness and fear of catching Covid-19. One survey of 16,000 people, conducted during April and May 2020, found that half of adults and

two-thirds of young people said their mental health had worsened during the lockdown. The charity MIND has described the situation as a mental health emergency and yet one in three adults and one in four young people did not feel entitled to seek help because they didn’t feel they deserved it! Barriers to getting help include the stigma some still perceive to admitting to a mental health issue, reluctance to take anti-depressants, long NHS waiting lists for psychological therapies or just not realising your mood disorder is serious enough to warrant treatment.

How online CBT can help with depression and anxiety The first step to getting help for depression is recognising the symptoms which can range from a general feeling of being in low spirits to more severe issues that interfere with your daily life and can feel overwhelming. Feeling depressed can also cause anxiety symptoms, a type of fear usually associated with something going wrong in the future. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), is a talking therapy that can help you manage your problems by changing the way you think and behave and has been shown to be an effective treatment for both mild-to-

moderate depression and anxiety, and that is where Beating the Blues (BTB) can help. BTB is very convenient to access, as you can log on for your sessions 24/7 when you need it, at a time and place to suit your schedule. You may also prefer the anonymity that online treatment offers. Each of the 8 weekly sessions consist of three to four interactive modules you can work through yourself in around ten to fifteen minutes each. You will then be expected to apply the techniques to your everyday life by completing specific exercises in the following week.

Why not check your mood for free? Take a free, confidential and easy online test at www.checkmymentalhealth.co.uk. The makers of the programme have made it available to readers of ‘Discovering Bourne’,Palace at a special discounted price of on justthe Hill, Lincolnshire PE10 0JH The Hen House, Farm Office, Witham £39.95 (normally £59.95). Don’t Make it a “Christ Miss” Make it the Year of Goodwill! BY CLAIRE GRAY, OWNER OF RENU

Normally, in this November issue, I would be discussing preparations for the party season and how we can take the stress out of Christmas. I think it’s fair say that things will be a little different this year!

T

he thing about a crisis is that it very often brings out the very best in people. Many positives came out of the very difficult challenges of lockdown earlier in the year. For example, we all started going for daily walks where we would meet and talk to people who we had previously ignored or simply acknowledged briefly with a nod or a smile. What’s more, our awareness and appreciation of the NHS and other key workers increased no end.

During this extraordinary period, I, like many others, found myself willingly giving and receiving help and encouragement from other people. I also tried to help and support local businesses and to support my customers as much as I could. I was overwhelmed by the support they showed me. Living through this pandemic helps us put things into perspective. It’s certainly highlighted the importance of our health and wellbeing, and the opportunities for gatherings with friends and family have become so much more precious. We have learned to appreciate the simple things in life again and giving gifts is one of the ways we can show love and appreciation for a kindness, a simple thank you and, of course, for Christmas.

You can purchase our gift vouchers online, collect them personally or have them posted. During the lockdown period, we honoured and extended all of our vouchers, so nobody missed a treatment. We will continue to offer this flexibility with all of our vouchers, which currently have a full year expiry. You can therefore be assured that the person receiving the gift of pampering will enjoy it, regardless. There are so many ways in which our vouchers can be used, ranging from beautiful products to use at home, treatments in the salon, workouts in the gym, classes in the studio or online workouts and health advice. They are a great way to say, “Thank you”, “I love you” or “Happy Christmas”. Regardless of the pandemic, make Christmas special this year with a RENU voucher!

The Gut Brain Superhighway GUT-FOCUSED HYPNOTHERAPY CAN HELP

O

ur brain and gut are intrinsically connected. We have ‘gut feelings’ about a person or event and feel ‘butterflies’ in our stomach when something exciting happens. Neuroscientists have become increasingly aware that our gut may hold key insights into brain function. The gut has a ‘mini-brain’ a network of neurons called the enteric nervous system. The brain and enteric nervous system talk, and the shared communication line between the two is often called the gut-brain axis - “the gut brain superhighway”. The gut communicates with the brain via hormones released into the bloodstream that cross the blood brain barrier, controlling our desire for food. For example, the gut hormone ghrelin tells us when we are hungry, and other hormones such as glucagonlike peptide tell us when we are full. The gut also makes neurotransmitters such as serotonin, the happy chemical, which keeps us calm and in control, helps us cope, and see things from a good perspective. If we are stressed or anxious, the production of serotonin slows down.

around the nearest toilet or exit. Gut bacteria are also important as they make the chemicals such as serotonin, dopamine and acetylcholine. Gut bacteria talk to the enteric nervous system and the brain. The presence of a good balance of bacteria helps balance chemicals and emotions.

In the gut, specialised cells lining the wall of the gut make and secrete serotonin where it plays an important role in controlling the wave-like contractions of the gut walls that squeeze food/waste along the digestive tract. This action becomes irregular if we are stressed or anxious, contributing to the symptoms of IBS.

“How we think affects our gut” Bloating, constipation, cramps and diarrhoea are some of the physical symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). It can cause extensive anxiety, worry and embarrassment that can negatively affect all aspects of a person’s life, from their relationships and work to their social activities. IBS sufferers usually feel trapped and have to plan their lives meticulously

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can help Hypnotherapy can help break this cycle. It can help reduce anxiety and stress levels, which can lead to improvements in the frequency and intensity of symptoms. It can help individuals to take control of their lives and to build confidence and self-esteem. In combination, these benefits help individuals to reconnect with their lives, so that they can be free to enjoy activities, be spontaneous and spend time with friends, family and work colleagues. The good news is that there is effective help available! Gut focused hypnotherapy has been shown to significantly improve symptoms and is now listed in the NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) guidelines as a recognised IBS therapy approach.

Advice from

This month, Odin HR answers employer questions on redundancy

1

Can I select an employee for redundancy because they’ve been shielding?

They will probably have been advised to shield because of their age and/or medical conditions that put them at greater risk of severe illness if they contract Covid-19. If shielding is your sole reason for their redundancy selection, the redundancy could be both unfair and discriminatory on the grounds of disability and/or age, exposing you to financial penalties at an Employment Tribunal. so you should pay him the ten weeks’ notice.

2

Can I ask employees selected for redundancy to leave immediately rather than work their notice?

4

Yes, but you must pay them upfront the money they would have earned working their notice period. This is called “pay in lieu of notice” and is taxable. Technically, if there isn’t a contract clause allowing you to pay in lieu of notice, it is a breach of contract. This doesn’t cause the employee problems usually but take advice if your employee contracts have post-termination restrictions.

3

One employee with ten years’ service has challenged his one month’s notice payment. He says he’s entitled to more – is he?

He’s correct. In addition to contractual notice periods, there are statutory notice rights set out in law, entitling employees to one week’s notice for every year of employment (up to twelve weeks’ service). An employee is entitled to the higher of the two notice periods. Your employee’s statutory notice of ten weeks is greater than his one month’s contractual notice,

Do I pay redundant employees on furlough their notice at their normal rate of pay - or at their current furlough rate, which is less? This depends on two factors: 1. Is the employee “ready and willing to work” during the notice period? This would usually entitle them to be paid their normal pay. 2. How long have they worked for you? If their contractual notice exceeds the statutory notice by more than one week (see Question 3), then you may pay the lower furlough rate during notice. This is still a largely untested area of law and redundancy situations are particularly emotive. It may be the right thing all round to pay full notice pay if you can. Please note that each situation is different. To get advice on your specific issues, call Odin HR for a free, no-obligation discussion. See www.odinhr.co.uk for “Odin’s Advice” on other topics.

Mayor

Words from the Mayor

COUNCILLOR COLIN PATTISON

Being positive, one thing that cannot go unnoticed is the continuing, very heart-warming trend of new shops and businesses opening in Bourne.

M

y wife Fiona and I were very kindly invited along to attend the formal opening of a new coffee shop on Elsea Park, namely “Full of Beans”. Owner and former candidate from the BBC programme, ‘The Apprentice’, Khadija Kalifa, has put a lot of time, thought and effort into this new venture - a soft play centre within the coffee shop We sincerely wish her all the very best for the future. Recently, we have also seen the opening of “Clarabelle’s” on North Street and we wish proprietor, Samantha Oliphant, every success with this venture as a second-hand shop selling other people’s goods/items for a share of the profit. Furthermore, the local mental health charity, “Don’t Lose Hope”, have opened up a gift shop to hopefully provide extra funds towards their absolutely invaluable work within our community.

Council News We continue to hold all meetings remotely using the Zoom platform. The latest Public Open Forum meeting had two rather special attendees, namely the Police and Crime Commissioner for Lincolnshire, Marc Jones, along with Chief Inspector Phil Vickers from the “front line” at Lincolnshire Police. It gave members of the public and fellow councillors the opportunity to raise questions of serious concern; issues covered included funding, police officer numbers actually on duty, drugs issues, speeding and poor driving, increased anti-social behaviour and PCSO effectiveness. Technology from Police HQ rather let us down unfortunately, although the Chief Inspector was able to respond at considerable length, with precise and professional clarity, giving a clear insight to current policing operations. Thanks go to LCC Councillor, Sue Wolley, for initially facilitating this meeting and to all participants. 30

Mayor’s Remembrance Day Walk As reported last month, my wife Fiona and I intend to walk around the parish of Bourne on Remembrance Sunday, November 8th, thereby taking the “Act of Remembrance” out to the people, as we simply cannot have a parade or any form of massed gathering this year. At the time of writing, our training and preparations continue, and we have been encouraged along our way whilst training with people pipping their car horns, waving or simply saying, “Hello”. Thanks to every one of you; it keeps us going. Please, please support us in whatever way you can; we are trying to do something unique here.

My three chosen charities The Butterfield Day Care Centre: Around sixty meals-on-wheels are cooked and then taken out to needy clients, five days a week, and some at weekends.

Wake House: Our numerous user groups trying to get people back together, but many being thwarted by “the rule of six”.

The Old Town Hall: Something for the future, when we can all socially gather once more and enjoy companionship, drinks, hearty conversation, film and performing arts. Take care everyone, stay safe! N OV E M BE R 2 0 2 0

Bourne’s Georgie Jones Performed to an Empty House in Stamford

T

he long-awaited performance of “ish” by Georgie Jones eventually went ahead, almost five months after it had been scheduled for May 2nd this year. The one-woman show was streamed on Stamford Arts Centre’s Facebook site on National Poetry Day, and what a treat was to be had! Playing to an empty house seemed to deter the talented Miss Jones not one bit and, after an hour of faultless dialogue, delivered most endearingly, we were all left wondering just how could anyone remember so many lines, so many of which flowed effortlessly with poetic ease. Set to a ’90s and ’00s pop and hip-hop soundtrack, “ish” is a frank and humorous exploration of what it means to be a woman. Spoken word, stand-up and storytelling combine, in celebration of the simultaneously grotesque and glorious experience that is growing up into a “twenty-something”! In 2018, Georgie spent twelve months as Resident Artist at The Roundhouse, London, writing and performing a lot of what would eventually become “ish”; mostly poems about awkward snogging, all-consuming first loves and horrific waxing

disasters. The show was then commissioned by a consortium of Midlands venues and supported by the Arts Council – hence the trip to Stamford. Writer and performer, Georgie Jones, says, “It’s really exciting to bring the piece back to where I grew up, to be able to perform it in its own setting. It’s a semi-autobiographical show which hopefully means that a lot of audiences will be able to really directly relate to it.” Georgie hails from Bourne and is a product of Bourne Grammar School’s thriving Performing Arts Department. Hailed as a fun, warm, witty and engaging monologue that genuinely connects with the audience, I would strongly urge anyone to catch this show by visiting www.facebook.com/stamfordarts, sit back and let Georgie work those magical words!

Here is your chance to donate no-longer-wanted school clothing and sports gear, so that it can be distributed to youngsters who may need it. People willing to clean, repair, iron and catalogue items.

People willing to help promote this really worthwhile initiative.

‘Don’t Lose Hope’ Opens New Gift Shop and Therapy Venue

S

ituated at 3 South Street and fronted by the gift shop, Don’t Lose Hope have opened premises which will not only provide affordable and personalised handmade gifts for all occasions, but also a new space for their play therapy sessions. On sale is everything from postcards and greeting cards, books and nightlights to bath-bombs, scented candles, prints, jewellery, worry monsters and much more.

CEO of the charity, Nicola Brister, said, “There is much more space and far greater facilities here to allow our play therapists to deliver sessions to children from around four to nine years of age. Having the gift shop as a new source of financial support in these difficult times is very exciting.” The Charity’s new space will also be providing art therapy sessions, pottery and handicraft

activities, as well as other creative workshops for the entire community. “We have a potter’s wheel, kiln and activity table space which will help to deliver our sessions within the current government guidelines and hopefully we can progress this as we move through the restrictions”. This month will also see the community garden and “man shed” building take shape on the Wellhead, where they hope to deliver DIY workshops, ‘Repair Café’ style activities and educational programmes to benefit the whole community. If you would like to know more about the charity and what they can offer, please have a look at www.dontlosehope.co.uk. The shop is open the same hours as the café, weekdays, 9am – 4pm and Saturday 10am – 4pm.

SKDC Launches New Community Art Project South Kesteven District Council’s Arts Centres have launched the SK Creative Colour Challenge inspired by Sir Isaac Newton’s experiment, where he demonstrated that white light is made up of the colours of the rainbow, initially noticing five - red, yellow, green, blue and violet. These experiments were carried out during his own “lockdown” period in the 1660s, when he returned to his family home at Woolsthorpe Manor, near Colsterworth, to avoid the plague. The Arts Centres are inviting anyone based in or around South Kesteven, including schools, community groups, businesses and local organisations, as well as families and individuals, to be part of a new district-wide project to create a series of flags for South Kesteven, one in each of the five colours. They are looking for photographs that are predominantly red, yellow, green, blue, 36

or violet. It could be a close-up image, a collection of objects, a woodland scene, family portraits or pets – the choice is yours! The SKDC Arts Centres team will then sort the photographs into the five colour groups to patchwork them into a design for each flag. All of the photographs will be exhibited online through the project’s website www.creativecolour.co.uk and @skflags on Instagram. The finished flags will be on show all around the district for the next two years and will also feature as part of the next Gravity Fields Festival in 2022. Property News

Change of Season, Change of Agent?

T

he Bourne property market has been extremely buoyant over the last few months; therefore, if you have been struggling to sell or let a property, now is the time to act.

Has your agent provided any reasons for your property having not sold or let? Are you being told the market is quiet, or that the price is the issue? These are easy excuses for any agent to use, rather than reviewing their approach or your marketing details. Do you feel that your marketing details provide a fair reflection of the property, or do you feel they could be improved? Have you received regular contact from your agent, regardless of the interest in the home? If the answer to both of these questions is ‘no’, then now is definitely the time to act. With the Stamp Duty ‘holiday’ ending in March 2021, properties ideally need to have sold before the end

BY JASON TREADWELL, MANAGING DIRECTOR

of 2020, in order to complete in time and benefit from this. Therefore, by taking a new and fresh approach to achieving a sale now, you are allowing enough time for you and your buyer to benefit. Rental properties are currently being let within days of marketing, with numerous applications being received. Here at Newton Fallowell, we have even been able to let properties prior to marketing, with many people missing out and still looking. With an array of potential buyers and tenants registered with us, looking for all different kinds of property, we are keen to assist you with a fresh and proactive approach. If you are struggling to sell or let your property, or if you would like to be informed about new properties coming to the market prior to them reaching the online portals, then please do not hesitate to contact our team today on 01778 422567.

First Mention This Year of the “C” Word!

A

s Christmas appears on the horizon, we know that this is the time of year that we will get lots of requests for additional sockets for Christmas decorations, so I wanted to pre-empt the Christmas rush by giving some electrical safety advice this month. Clients will often contact us to install external sockets to provide power for Christmas lights. Something that is not often considered is that the plugs that are attached to most outside Christmas lights often have transformers built into them. This means that the plug is much larger than one of the IP-rated sockets will allow, whilst still being able to close. When we are installing external sockets, if the socket is being installed to power up Christmas lighting, we often advise to also fit a weatherproof extension box next to the socket. This will allow up to four plugs and allows lots of room for the transformer plugs that are often used. This will ensure that no rain or humidity will get into your new socket, and even leaves enough room for a timer so you don’t have to remember to turn them off at night.

BY COLEEN EVERITT, ALTO ELECTRICAL LIMITED

online that don’t meet our British safety standards. Always use LED lights; they are very reasonably priced now and there is just no justification when you take into account the added safety benefits of not using old style hot light bulbs. Always check them over for damage before using them, and if you are using them in a business premises or in a public area, always get them PAT tested before use. Always use ladders safely. Get help when using ladders and always ask someone to foot your ladder. If you have any questions or concerns, you can call your local electrician for FREE ADVICE on 01778 772595

Promotions 1x External socket - Installed, tested and certified to the NICEIC - £95 (inc. VAT) 2x External sockets - Installed, tested and certified to the NICEIC - £140 (inc. VAT) 1x External socket & Weatherproof socket box - Installed, tested and certified to the NICEIC £125 (inc. VAT)

Another option you may not have considered is to have it running off a timer switch fuse spur on the inside; this means the control is completely at your fingertips without going out into the cold weather. Being able to isolate it on the inside also means the socket is far less likely to be misused.

Terms & conditions: 1. To install socket/s back-to-back with an existing socket, the existing socket cannot be a spur off the ring. 2. Minimum safety requirements must be in place (RCD protection/Bonding). 3. The circuit must be clear of underlying faults and in good working order. 4. The inside socket and the area outside where it will go need to be clear and accessible for installing.

Whilst we are on the (perhaps premature!) topic of Christmas, here are some things to consider if you are looking to put up Christmas lights this year. Always buy from a reputable source. There are many counterfeit and replica items available to buy

Steve Traynor – Locksmith

S

teve Traynor sees himself as our “fifth emergency service”, after the police, fire, ambulance and vehicle recovery. The person locked out of their property needs an immediate response, especially as the caller could well be in a vulnerable position. Steve’s ‘patch’, approximately a thirty-mile radius from his Grantham home, includes Bourne and its surrounding villages, and his work involves much more than solving the ‘lock-out’ crises. He offers a wide range of fitting, replacing, repairing and anything else that domestic and commercial security systems may need. Shops, schools, children’s homes,

shipping containers, offices … the list goes on. “No two days are the same and I absolutely love all aspects of my work,” he explains. Clearly, his satisfied customers think very highly of Steve too, with every review on any of the social media platforms which he uses screaming out five stars and a strong recommendation! Steve came into this line of work after an engineering background and then several years in sales. That “face-to-face with the public” element is crucial and

everything he offers will have the customers’ best interests (and wallet) at its heart. Costeffective repairs rather than a straightforward replacement have no doubt endeared him to many people!

STEVE’S TOP TIP If you have just moved in to a new home, especially if you are a tenant, then Steve strongly recommends you get all your locks changed – you never know who may still have a key!

Your Finances

Looking After Your Loved Ones BY MATTHEW BIGGS – FINANCIAL PLANNER

I

’m sure we can all agree that 2020 has felt like one of the longest years on record, and unlike anything any of us would have ever experienced beforehand. What’s more, the restrictions don’t look like they’re going anywhere anytime soon.

A lot has been said about coronavirus and the effects it has on people of all ages, but one thing that cannot be argued is that it affects the elderly the most. I can recall speaking to my grandmother, who was one of many elderly people who were instructed to shield during the majority of the lockdown, and her telling me that she was going stir crazy not being able to leave the house, but at the same time completely understood the reason she had to remain indoors and isolated from the rest of the population. This did present the issue of how she was going to look after her affairs whilst not being able to leave her house (she is of the generation that still favours the personal approach, as opposed to completing everything over the internet).

48

Bourne

Fortunately, she had taken the precautions of arranging Lasting Power of Attorney documents, so her loved ones were able to step in and act on her behalf whilst she was unable to do so. There are two types of Lasting Power of Attorney documents – ‘Health and Welfare’ and ‘Property and Financial’ affairs. They are pretty much “what it says on the tin”; one document enables a loved one to act on your behalf for all things financial and the other allows them to make decisions regarding health and welfare, should you not be in a position to do so yourself. We believe Lasting Power of Attorneys are a vital part of financial planning and offer something that money simply cannot buy … peace of mind, and that is something that is in short supply at the moment! If you would like to speak to a member of our team regarding Lasting Power of Attorneys, please contact our office on 01778 342291 for a FREE initial consultation.

How Are You Coping With Covid-19? “where Blinds are our business” B. T. BLINDS ARE A FAMILY BUSINESS WHO SUPPLY IN ALL TYPES OF BLINDS

J

ust because there is a pandemic, it doesn’t mean that family problems requiring the assistance of legal advice are on hold. If anything, relationship breakdown and disputes over child arrangements between separated parents are more prevalent.

Most Family Law solicitors are back to offering a full service, if remotely. The Family Courts are almost all operating remotely, with BT conference calls in this area, sometimes a Skype hearing for that more intimate touch, if you are lucky. Very occasionally, for final hearings, you can actually be in a court room!

The courts are not responding to any communication, other than e-mail and online applications. Navigating this new world can be bewildering for a litigant in person, as an unrepresented spouse/parent is known, and you may wish to seek some initial advice from a solicitor to start you off on an application. Before you reach that point, a Family Law solicitor will also point you in the direction of mediation before you rush off to court. Particularly in children cases, mediation can be a much more appropriate way of resolving disputes. The legal environment has changed radically, like most other areas of life nowadays. If you need help finding your way around, contact a Family Law specialist in the first instance.

Legal Corner

AUTUMN LEGAL THOUGHTS ADVICE FROM RICHARD WOOD

A

s the nights well and truly draw in, the summer has disappeared for another year. Unlike the seasons though, the law does not change quickly. Since 2000, a lot has happened, but more in society than in the legal system.

This can affect Family Law disputes as well, when unfortunate observations can lead to evidence in proceedings.

Digitally, much has happened over the last twenty years, but Employment Law mainly developed up until the Equality Act in 2010. There was frantic activity (or what passes for that!) in the period from the 1970s until then with the law reflecting changing times in society, alongside European Directives. The Employment Tribunal (supposedly informal to begin with) has grown into an important venue for employees.

Inheritance Tax allowances have been brought in during the last eleven years which makes the drawing up of wills much easier, at least for now. No one knows what awaits in the future, but making a will now has never been more straightforward.

Everyone should, of course, take care with digital security in these changing times and in what they say online in social media. In the last ten years, the new area for evidence in disputes can come from what is said online or in messages which, if considered inappropriate, can lead to consequences.

Fortunately, the government has decided to implement “No Fault” divorce (the details of which are awaited).

The price of property has obviously risen in the last thirty years and there are challenges to youngsters trying to get on to that ladder.

The law of Landlord and Tenant is ripe for consideration, especially considering the difficulties caused by the shortage of property.

If we can help you with any of these issues, please contact the Bourne office of Double and Megson on 01778 42237.

At this time of year, the elements can take their toll on the home; we can expect gusty winds and heavy rain to play havoc when it comes to guttering, roof tiles, fences and even trees. Your driveway may have also lost its summer sparkle and be in need of a deep clean. Trading Standards always advise to never accept an offer of work from cold callers who “happen to be in your area”. Don’t be fooled by business cards with websites and telephone numbers which look genuine. Politely take the card and say you will contact them at your convenience. You can then check their contact details or ask a family member or friend to do so on your behalf. Here are some simple but effective ways to ‘winter proof’ your home and garden, and avoid a November nightmare: 1) Check all external pipes for breaks, leaks, and blockages. Blocked or leaking pipes can freeze during the cold months, then expand and burst, causing potentially expensive water damage.

DW DWB DM DB DD Airborne Aerials 1/8 Page NOVEMBER 20.indd 1 15/10/2020 12:20 2)

Think about insulation. A properly insulated property is an absolute must. Make sure that you check the basics, starting with obvious draft points. Invest in some draft excluder to keep doors and windows secure. Check the cladding around your boiler and pipes, and make sure that taps don’t leak.

6) If your chimneys are in use, make sure that they get swept every year. This will remove the build-up of dirt and grime from your chimney walls.

Call us on 01733 208600 Mobile 07774 310915

D I S C O V E R I N G

4) Arrange for a professional to service your boiler each year. As everyone starts to switch on or boost their central heating, the surge in gas consumption can lead to a big increase in boiler breakdowns. 5) Clear out your gutters. In autumn, leaves can collect in gutters and drains, leading to blocks and overflows.

NEW Rotavator plus Operator ideal for allotments, veg patches etc

3) Bleed your radiators. A great way to warm up your property is to bleed the radiators. This releases any trapped air, allowing hot water to fill every part of your radiator and warm the property more efficiently.

Pets and Vets

Cat Fights

utumn is here and vets can expect to see an increase in fighting amongst cats and the eruption of abscesses. Spring and autumn are the mating seasons for cats and the ‘entire’ tom cats are gearing up to defend their territories. As cat ownership is on the increase, the density of cats in an area also increases and this in turn makes cat fights more common. We rarely see cat fights, although we can often hear them; the yowl of an angry tom, about to launch an attack, is one that brings fear to the heart of any vet or vet nurse. If your cat has been bitten, you won’t necessarily see any wound. Instead, your cat may feel very tired, take itself off to a quiet corner and sleep. If you try to stroke him, he may hiss or spit when you touch the sore area. Cat teeth are covered with bacteria and, when they bite with their fangs (the canine teeth), those bacteria get injected deep under the skin. They can circulate around your cat’s bloodstream and start a generalised infection with fever, inappetence (lack of appetite), and lethargy. Until your cat’s temperature reduces to normal, he will feel pretty rough indeed. Over the course of the next few hours, the body begins to fight the bacteria, sending its white blood

62

Bourne

Wise Words By Deirdre Wilson

cells to the damaged area to engulf and destroy the bacteria. It is a war, and many of the body’s cells are killed during it. The resulting debris on the battlefield is pus. As the pus builds up it forms a swelling under the skin – the abscess – which may burst through the skin releasing stinking yellowy/green pus. This release of pressure actually reduces the pain and aids in clearing the infection, so vets will also lance ripe abscesses, flushing it out and allowing air into the wound. Abscesses tend to occur on the face, around the jowls when cats are fighting head to head, so you often see one side of the face massively enlarged You probably will not see the cat bite as the skin seals over it but your cats gives you lots of warning if you try to touch the area! Lancing the abscess, possibly under sedation, and a course of antibiotics, usually clears the infection quickly. Cat bites can also transfer life-threatening viruses such as Feline Leukaemia Virus (FeLV) and Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV), so trying to prevent cat fights is important but very difficult. Keep your cat in at night since cats are nocturnal and most fights occur then. Vaccinate your cat against FeLV (there is no vaccine against FIV) as it will provide a good deal of protection against this disease. And finally, always, always neuter your cats, both male and female. Not only will it reduce fighting, it will also reduce the massive number of unwanted kittens we have in the UK.
