Introduction
Welcome to your January Issue So, here we are in 2021 and a warm welcome from us all. Never before have the words of American columnist and author, William E. Vaughan, sounded so appropriate than right now. He declared, “An optimist stays up until midnight to see the new year in. A pessimist stays up to make sure the old year leaves.” Well, I’m sure we can all call ourselves pessimists then, as we wave farewell to 2020 … and not before time! We’ll all have plenty of memories of the past year, hopefully not all unhappy ones, but I think it gave us all the opportunity to just reflect on what really matters to us in our individual lives. We do take so much for granted on a daily basis, so maybe 2021 will give us many occasions to think more of other people, worse off than ourselves, who battle on with their lives, regardless. I hope your 2021 will bring you all happiness and an eventual reprieve from the Covid-19 stranglehold.

This month sees the inauguration of the forty-sixth President of the USA, Joe Biden, but it’s to the words of one of his predecessors, Thomas Jefferson, that we now turn. Bearing in mind the ongoing horrors of the last nine months, who could argue with, “I like the dreams of the future better than the history of the past” as a fitting farewell to 2020? Much is still to come in terms of a successful programme of vaccination, but hopes are high that an end might be in sight. The same could be said with the prolonged Brexit saga, of course, but I’ve resolved to keep clear of fantasy fiction this year! This month, there is an optimistic feel to a lot of what our regular contributors are offering, and I would echo those sentiments as we all look forward to happier days ahead. Just in case your Christmas cracker jokes weren’t too special, surely they were better than these two … Production was down at Santa’s workshop this year, when several of his helpers had to elf-isolate. We had fun playing “Dominic Cummings Monopoly” – just ignore all the rules, move anywhere on the board and never ‘Go to Jail’. Enjoy the read!

Looking Back on 2020 and Hoping for a Better 2021 BY CLAIRE GRAY, OWNER OF RENU
January is usually a time for us all to think about losing a few pounds, getting fitter or beating the belly fat.
W
hilst all of these things are important for our overall health and wellbeing, I think it’s fair to say that the Covid pandemic has taught us all to appreciate the simpler things in life and be grateful for our health, whatever our body shape. This being said, it has also proved that maintaining a healthy weight and keeping fit is essential to our overall wellbeing and leaves us less vulnerable to infection. It has certainly been a challenging year, but we have also seen more rainbows than ever before. We have overcome our fears and learned new skills. We have felt the benefit of a daily walk in the fresh air and many of us have tried new forms of exercise.
make classes more accessible, less intimidating and a platform for some much-needed social interaction. Our mental health has become more important than ever, and exercise is a great way to increase endorphins and brighten your mood. I have always advocated that exercise is about mental and physical wellbeing, but this year, more than ever, my advice is to make a resolution to exercise for this reason as a priority. You may just find that your waistline responds accordingly! As we approach some of the coldest months of the year, remember that wearing a mask is a great way to keep your face warm as well as keeping you safe, so try to take advantage of the fresh air and make it your aim to continue to strive for a fitter, healthier you for 2021.
With gyms and studio classes intermittently closed, it has been more challenging than ever to keep up an exercise routine. There have also been lots of opportunities to try new activities and hone our computer skills as the fitness world has become even more accessible online. I have been delighted with how popular the Zoom classes I have been running have turned out, and very encouraged with the positive feedback, as people are able to

A New Year, A New Start and Off You Go!
A
new year can prompt reflection with enthusiasm to make changes in your life, helping to focus your mind on areas of change. Resilience building can help eliminate stress, the main course of many conditions today.
Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is a powerful tool to help you to empty your daily stress bucket in a calm and relaxed way, allowing you to move forward in your life in a constructive, positive way and taking control of your life. Hypnotherapy is also widely used to help people overcome specific phobias, including the fear of flying. “Spring is a time when people may be looking ahead to booking flights for summer holidays and some individuals may find flying a little daunting, I can help you ease the fear of flying, using specific hypnotherapy techniques.”
Free Initial Consultation I am pleased to be able to offer a free initial consultation to explain how I can help you reduce stress/anxiety, panic attacks, and also help overcome common problems, such as: • Stress and anxiety • Stop smoking • Overcoming fears and phobias • Confidence and self-esteem • Medical hypnotherapy – hypertension, needle phobia, emetophobia, pain • Grief and loss • ‘Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder’ • Addictions – alcohol, sugar, Red Bull, gambling, shopping, social media, gaming
• Insomnia • Disordered eating • Children and teens • Depression • ‘Obsessive Compulsive Disorder’ • Sleeplessness • ‘Irritable Bowel Syndrome’ • Fibromyalgia • Goal achievement – sports, business, personal and artistic performance • Public speaking • and much more... The consultation focuses on explaining how the brain works and how it can sometimes cause us to react to situations in a way that might not be best for us. So, if you find that you sometimes become stressed, withdrawn, feel a degree of anxiety and sleeplessness, or become angry, then you may wish to pay me a visit (I am based in Bourne, Spalding and Stamford in comfortable and warm surroundings) or by Zoom in the comfort of your own home. This is the beginning of everything you want in 2021!
“Your DREAMS don’t work unless you do.”

KNEADS DEEP SPORTS MASSAGE Words by Lotti Christie
I have always had a passion for sport and loved getting active in any way possible. Throughout my early years’ education, I excelled in sports, from football to netball, and even tried my hand at pole vault. I went on to study Sports Coaching at Loughborough University where I took advantage of the many opportunities from various coaching qualifications and sporting facilities. Upon leaving university, I began working at Tallington Lakes as a ski instructor and they’ve not been able to get rid of me since! Throughout my life, I have experienced many injuries and I can fully understand the pain and frustration which these bring. The reason I have set up Kneads Deep Sports Massage is to help everyone overcome injuries or general aches and live a pain-free life.
Sports massage isn’t just for athletes or people who go to the gym; it’s for everyone! Sitting at a desk all day or driving long distances can strain our muscles, but an hour’s maintenance massage once every couple of months can make the world of difference. I hope to see you soon!”

• Tightly pack the spinach in to a measuring cup. • Add the spinach to a blender with the water. Blend together until all chunks are gone. It should resemble green water when blended well. • Add the pineapple, mango and banana to the blender. Using frozen pineapple and mango chills the smoothie down and saves time cutting and prepping. • Blend it all together until smooth and creamy. Depending on your blender, this could take as little as thirty seconds or as long as two minutes. • Pour into a glass and serve immediately to enjoy!

Words from the Mayor
COUNCILLOR COLIN PATTISON
I trust that this finds you all in good health after the Christmas and New Year festivities.
N
o doubt, it was all very different and probably frustrating for all of us. The year of 2020 will go down in memory as one that I personally just wish to consign to the history books, and I am sure I’m not alone with that thought!
On reflection: We have all missed out on/given up so much over the past few months. Just a few notable events that we have had pass us by, Easter, VE and VJ Day celebrations, the Classic Bike and Car Show, the Annual Bourne Festival on the Wellhead, Remembrance Sunday Parade and the Christmas lights switch-on. The list goes on and on, not to mention closure of pubs, restaurants, churches and numerous clubs, groups and usual social gatherings.
Looking forward: The promising outlook of a vaccine will hopefully get on top and control the Covid-19 virus, gradually helping us return to some sort of normality in our lives. We all hope that we can start to enjoy life once more 22
Bourne
and restart seeing loved ones, family and friends. Already, the daylight hours are lengthening so let’s all look forward to a better and brighter 2021. By the time you read this article, I will have hopefully dispersed some of the monies raised from our Remembrance Day walk in November. I have given the Butterfield Day Care Centre and Wake House cheques for £1,000 each to help them during these very difficult times and, hopefully in the New Year when things improve, we will be able to hold more fundraising events to raise more money for these worthy causes, along with the Bourne Town Hall Trust.
Town Council News: Work continues on the annual budget as reported last month which we must submit to SKDC by the end of January. The Neighbourhood Plan Team continue to meet regularly and make steady progress. Hopefully, within the next few months, they will be able to present a document for public consultation. Finally, a big thank you to all of those who continue to support us, and we wish you all a Happy New Year. Councillor Colin Pattison. JANUARY 2021

No Such Thing as Normal BY BRYONY GORDON Mental illness has led to some of the worst times of my life... but it has also led to some of the most brilliant. Bad things happen, but good things can come from them. From depression and anxiety to personality disorders, one in four of us experience mental health issues every year and, in these strange and unsettling times, more of us than ever are struggling to cope. Bryony offers sensible, practical advice, covering subjects such as sleep, addiction, worry, medication, self-image, boundary setting, therapy, learned behaviour, mindfulness and, of course - as the founder of Mental Health Mates - the power of walking and talking. A lively, honest and direct guide to mental health that cuts through the ‘Instagramwellness’ bubble to talk about how each of us can feel stronger, better and just a little bit less alone.

SPOTLIGHT ON
“Bourne in Business”
Chairman, Paul Ross puts you in the picture: What is the Bourne in Business group? The BiB is a forum for businesses of all shapes and sizes who share ideas and who network, not only in Bourne but also in the surrounding South Kesteven region. We are often supported by local councillors, S.K. leaders and support staff and ‘Biz Lincolnshire’, whose role is to support the local businesses and local community. Our objective is to ensure businesses are well informed of local initiatives and we have a website for brand awareness. The Committee consists of Secretary, Joanne Dolby, (an experienced bookkeeper); Vice-Chair, Claire Saberton, (Sales Director of Discovering magazines and who, with Joanne, is the main driving force behind the ‘Bourne Events Team’ for the town’s summer and Christmas events); Tim Baker, (web developer who runs Stamford Digital) and myself, as Chairman and Treasurer.
How successful do you think it has been? We started off fifteen years ago with around ten members but now we have over seventy. Our goal is to share ideas and ensure the businesses in the club are well informed and supported. In ‘normal’ conditions, we meet at The Angel Hotel in Bourne. The meetings are very informal; we start by introducing ourselves, followed by local news and initiatives, and then we have a speaker. These can sometimes be extremely entertaining sessions!
In what ways could an individual person benefit from joining the group? Being in business can be quite lonely, so you will meet like-minded people who can help and share ideas. I would say, “Don’t expect to turn up and expect people to buy your service from you; that is secondary, as far as I’m concerned; it’s more about gelling with people and building relationships.” The great thing about our club is that the businesses are very diverse … just look at the www.bournebusiness.co.uk website and you’ll see what I mean.
Tell us about your own professional position. I am part of the Landmark Financial Planning Group in Stamford, but based in Kirkby Underwood, and have been an Independent Financial Adviser for thirty-one years, now employing five great people. I don’t advertise, as all my business comes from referrals, and I help people understand what investment and retirement plans mean. However, I mainly focus on what is important for what my clients want to achieve in life, their goals and how to achieve them.
How do you see the present economic outlook for businesses in Bourne? Frankly, for almost everyone, it’s been awful this year, especially for the retailers. However, we have seen some increased footfall in the local area recently, so I’m hoping this will continue and that people will see the positivity of shopping locally and supporting local businesses.
Interested in joining? Please send me an e-mail to paul@landmarkgroup. org.uk and I will send you details about the club and the positive things it can do for your business. Normally it would cost £50 to join and our business year ends at the end of May; however, this year’s membership will be extended to May 31st, 2022.
We have a rather strict rule though; the business must be within ten miles of Bourne (unless the business is something unusual). 24

Mind the Pension Gap!
M
odelling done by Nest, the workplace pension scheme, has recently revealed that, based on the average UK wage which includes parttime work, the gender pension gap at retirement for pension funds is as much as £72,500 against women. Women face extra challenges when saving for retirement, such as a greater proportion working in lower paid and part-time jobs, which means that they have less to put into their pensions. Women are also less likely to plan for retirement and, surprisingly, only 14% of divorce settlements include pension sharing, leaving women even more vulnerable to financial hardship. If you are divorcing, the pension assets can be one of the most valuable, if not the most valuable of assets in the marriage. Every divorce case, unless the marriage has been very short and the parties are very young, should include a consideration of the pensions. Either party, not just wives, can risk losing out on their fair share of a valuable asset if you don’t find out exactly what it is worth and include it together with the family home and other capital, for sharing. It may be tempting to cut corners and save costs by not instructing professionals in a divorce, but you could end up losing tens of thousands of pounds as a result of such false economy. Family Law specialists will be able to advise you on the value of pensions, which is particularly important if they are final salary/defined benefit schemes, and then arrange a pension actuary report if needed. Yes, this is all extra cost, but even if it’s twentyplus years away in the future, providing for your retirement is important financial planning that should not be neglected. Consult a Family Law specialist for further advice if this affects you.

BLOOD CANCER FUNDRAISING IN MEMORY OF JOHN MCGREGOR AND TAFF ROBERTS
I
t was evident earlier in 2020 that the annual November Coffee Morning, hosted by Margaret and Michael McGregor and Yvonne Roberts, would be unable to take place. The consequence was that alternative ways of fundraising needed to be found.
So, in recent months, books, jigsaws, masks and preserves have been sold; tickets for a Christmas cake and other regular draws of tickets have helped the funds; whilst many friends have collected 5p coins, as well as finding items for sale. The final effort was the sale of poinsettias (kindly supplied by Bridge Farm Group, Spalding) which proved to be a great success and it was so pleasurable seeing people’s faces when they saw a splash of Christmas cheer. We thank the people of Bourne and the surrounding area who have supported and donated to our endeavours which have resulted in raising a grand total of £5,000. As you can imagine, Yvonne Roberts and the McGregors are delighted that, in such difficult circumstances, so much money has been raised.

A Little Bit Of Christmas Cheer
Following the Mayor of Bourne, Councillor Colin Pattison’s, charity walk of the parish on November 8th, he was delighted to be able to hand over part of the funds to two local charities. A charity close to the hearts of many local residents saw him present a cheque for £1,000 to The Butterfield Centre. This will not only help the Centre continue its outstanding ‘Meals on Wheels’ service (which was due to continue operating throughout the Christmas and New Year period) but also to provide funds for the Butterfield’s new initiative, ‘The Community Pantry’. Councillor Pattison also presented a second cheque to the Bourne Arts and Community Trust, the administering charity looking after Wake House in North Street, Bourne. At the time of writing, Councillor Pattison was hopeful that he would be holding a fundraising stall on Bourne Market on Christmas Eve.

Supporting Employee Mental Health
A
s a new decade dawned in January 2020, who knew that, as the year drew to a close, we would be in the midst of a second wave of the worst global pandemic in over a century? Unsurprisingly, stress, anxiety and depression are just some of the mental health problems affecting many people right now. Even pre-Covid, the Office for National Statistics reported that 12.4% of days lost due to sickness absence in the UK in 2018 were down to mental health problems; that’s 1 in 8 days. The good news is that there are many positive things that you, as an employer, can do in the workplace to support the mental health and wellbeing of your employees. Certainly, it makes economic sense to do so. If employees are able to talk to you openly about their problems and get support, they are less likely to have to take time off. It’s good for morale and engagement too – employees who feel cared for will go that extra mile to do a great job for you. You also have a legal “duty of care” to do all you reasonably can to support your employees’ health, safety and wellbeing, which includes mental health. Remember also that mental health issues can be considered a disability under the Equality Act, which requires you to make “reasonable adjustments” to the workplace or the person’s role. Some examples might be adjusting their working hours or allowing them time out of work to attend regular medical or counselling appointments.
How do you create a supportive wellbeing culture? • Mental health awareness training is a very useful management tool. Many of us might be unaware of the signs of mental ill health or make judgements because we don’t understand what is going on. Or we may want to help but are scared of saying or doing the wrong thing. With training, managers can quickly identify employee wellbeing issues and feel confident about approaching them.
• Appointing Mental Health First Aiders (“MHFAs”) is something else to consider. One of the many benefits of MHFAs in the workplace is the boost to mental health awareness it can provide, helping to reduce the stigma associated with mental ill-health and making it easier for your employees to speak up and seek help. MHFA England offers two-day courses https://mhfaengland.org/ individuals/adult/2-day/ . • Working from home is a reality for many at present. These employees are often lone workers and are at particular risk of detriment to their mental health. Risk assessments should be in place for homeworking and you can play a key role in preventing depression and stress through regular communication and wellbeing “check ins” with your remote teams.

ormally, the volunteers at Toolbar (the local charity that supports people back to work) would have distributed bags of groceries and ‘goodies’ to their clients in December to help them over the Christmas break, with the generous support of some of the town’s supermarkets, and money from their own funds. However, as they have not been able to hold their usual Monday morning meetings since last March, this was not possible, so the trustees and volunteers agreed to support the Bourne Foodbank with a donation of £100.

Your Garden
January Gardening Tips
J
anuary is one of those months when there is so little to do on the allotment or garden as, more often than not, the soil is either frozen or waterlogged and should generally be left. However, you can still finish winter digging, weather permitting. Well-rotted manure or organic material can be added to the soil surface and it will become incorporated naturally. Also, a good idea when you are digging is to apply lime to the surface at 100g per square metre (3oz per square yard) especially if you grew brassicas the year before. Getting the soil prepared now will save time feeding later in the year and will often enhance crop growth and yield. If you have a greenhouse, cloches, or space in the house, then now is a good time to plant a few seeds ready for the planting out season. Onion, leek, tomato, chilli and aubergine seeds are a few that can be planted now to give them a good start. At this time of year, rhubarb can be forced: what could be tastier than pale pink sticks of rhubarb harvested in late February? Firstly, dig some manure around the roots and then cover them using pots or an upturned bucket, making sure any holes are covered to completely cut out the light. To speed up the process of forcing, you can also insulate the pot by covering the outside

of it with straw, bubble wrap or old carpet. Crowns which have been used for forcing should not be harvested in summer or in the following year, because the forcing process weakens the plant and the stems will not grow as strongly. Towards the end of the month, seed potatoes should be available and you can start chitting them ready for planting: put them rose-side uppermost and use old egg boxes or seed trays. Other jobs include: • prune apple and pear trees but not stone fruits such as cherry and damson; they should be summer pruned. • plant bare-rooted trees and bushes. • support Brussels sprouts and sprouting broccoli. • protect plants from cold and check stakes and ties. • start a ‘bean trench’ by digging down about 60cm, add a layer of newspaper and then start filling it with your organic kitchen waste. Each time you add a batch of waste, cover with a layer of soil: continue until the trench is full and leave it to rot down. And if the weather is foul, sit by the fire with a cuppa, or other warming beverage and plan for the year ahead, read gardening books and order from seed catalogues. Happy 2021...let’s hope that it’s a fruitful one!

Property News
New Year, New Agent?
W
ith the Christmas period over and a new year begun, focus has returned to the property market, for those considering moving. With many new buyers registering their requirements and a flurry of new properties coming to the market, Christmas can no longer be used as an excuse for a lack of interest. Despite Christmas, Newton Fallowell had an extremely busy and successful December, which is being carried through into January. Many properties were sold, including a few within days of advertising, and a couple that required no advertising at all! We found that buyers were in fact registering their details prior to the new year, to ensure they were the first to hear about any new properties due to come to the market. This included our Boxing Day launch, which provided tremendous results. We launched a variety of homes to the market, where they benefited from fantastic online exposure prior to the new year. Whilst the new year presents the benefit of many new buyers, it also presents a much higher level of competition on the market. Therefore, it is imperative to ensure that your home stands out, or you could risk becoming ‘stale’ on the market.
BY JASON TREADWELL, MANAGING DIRECTOR
Buyers, new and old, will maintain the ability to see the date your home was launched to the market. If your home had already been on the market for a period in 2019, they may begin to ask the question, “Why has this home not already sold?” Here at Newton Fallowell, we believe it is important to review a home’s marketing and interest regularly, to ensure it does not become ‘stale’. We recommend that if your home has not been receiving a good level of interest, that you understand why this is and, crucially, what your selling agent is doing to increase activity. Are they being proactive and cross-selling from similar homes they have available? What are the reasons potential purchasers are providing for not viewing your home? If you cannot answer the above questions, perhaps a change in selling agent could be worthwhile. With a combination of a new set of photographs/ marketing details, as well as a proactive agent who will provide you with answers to the above questions, you will benefit from one of the most important periods of the year for the property market. If you believe your home needs a fresh lease of life, then please do not hesitate to contact us on 01778 422567, so that we can provide this for you and help get you moving.

I
BY MATTHEW BIGGS – FINANCIAL PLANNER
t’s January, the dust has settled from the festive period and it’s time to start doing some of the jobs we have put off doing in the lead-up to Christmas and New Year’s Eve. You have probably had an annual statement come through from your pension provider, or a reminder that your insurance policy is due to expire and have popped them onto the pile in your kitchen, not to be looked at until the next one comes through the door. But maybe, this year, you will set aside some time and finally read through the letters that have been sent to you. We believe the best time of the year to do this is at the start, as it will set you up for the year and also take some weight off your mind early on. We also appreciate that you might not

March Bourne
When January rolls around, why not include your home (which has been working hard for you all year) in your New Year resolutions? While Safe Local Trades has members across many disciplines, (painting and decorating, plastering, electrician, kitchen/bathroom fitting, carpentry, handyman, carpet/upholstery cleaners, window/ conservatory fitting etc) many are already reporting bookings up until March 2021. Many tried and tested traders will be busy, so don’t delay in getting in touch to secure a slot. Some projects, like a new kitchen for example, may be subject to a longer lead-in time; there is the quote to agree, designs to finalise, products to order and then securing the availability of a great kitchen-fitter. Equally, if you are looking to sell your home come January, then time is of the essence if you require some property pick-me-ups and to stay ahead of the game. Interestingly, according to research, a downstairs loo, built-in storage (like wardrobes and cupboards), UPVC double glazing, a lawned garden and separate shower cubicle rank in the top five home improvement features to attract buyers. 15:38 But what do you have planned for the New Year? Here are a few jobs to think about – and Safe Local Trades has someone to fit every bill in the Peterborough, Stamford, Huntingdon areas and the wider ‘PE postcode’. • Most things get worn out or look tired eventually, and carpets and flooring are no exception. Replace them or give them a new lease of life with a deep clean. • Painting and decorating – make 2021 the year you give your home a bright, fresh look. • Home security – protect your property with CCTV or intruder surveillance/security alarm systems/PIR external lighting. • Garden landscape and maintenance – think ahead to the summer months. Give your garden a spring makeover and get your project booked in now to beat the rush. • Extending your home - whether you desire a conservatory or a new home office or study. • Window cleaning – add some sparkle to your home, even in the winter months, with bright and gleaming windows and doors. Resolve to Keep Your Home Safe in 2021
I
wonder whether or not you have made any New Year’s Resolutions? If not, I think you should, and one of them would involve checking the electrical safety of your home.
BY COLEEN EVERITT, ALTO ELECTRICAL LIMITED
a gas safety inspection every year, but many people may still not know what an EICR is. It is an Electrical Installation Condition Report.
After a particularly tough 2020, where our motto had always been, “Stay Safe”, I want you to really think now about keeping your family safe in other ways.
The ‘BS7671 Electrical Regulations’ recommend testing an installation every five years or at a change of occupancy. And, if you are a landlord, you will (hopefully!) already be aware that this is now the law for rentals, and you MUST provide your tenant with the certificate.
Most people that I speak to for the first time have no idea that you are supposed to get your home tested at least every five years.
We have client ‘help-sheets’ available which explain the benefits of having an EICR and what it involves.
This is to check the integrity of the electricity cables and to make sure that you have all the relevant fault protections in place, and to make sure that everything is safe and meeting the relevant regulations.
If you would like us to send one over, just send us an e-mail to Enquiries@altoelectrical. co.uk and say what sort of installation it is (rental/owned/business/church) and we will send you the relevant help-sheet.
Often, people are aware that you need to have

A NEW YEAR AND A NEW BROOM ? ADVICE FROM RICHARD WOOD
E
veryone hopes that the new year is better, much better than 2020.
So what is changing this year ? There may be news on so called “no-fault-divorce” following on from the success of our campaigning group, Resolution. This will make divorce a little easier. The current moratorium on Stamp Duty ends at the end of March. Our fee earners will continue to advise on property transactions nevertheless. In employment, the furlough scheme is now ending at the close of April. Whatever changes, legal matters feature heavily in people’s lives. At Double and Megson our experienced fee earners will be pleased to assist you on all legal matters such as property, wills, Lasting Power of Attorney and Probate, employment, matrimonial, litigation including consumer matters. Having instructions from different members
of the same family in many instances, our business is to get to know you and to provide you with quality legal advice and assistance. As a regulated firm, we achieve a recognized legal quality standard through Lexcel. Our firm has been present in the community for forty-two years and has seen a lot of changes in the law. Nevertheless, those who practice law within our firm still feel passionately about how the law can help clients in their daily lives. Although it is always topical, none the least of problems is how best can senior or vulnerable clients help themselves to cope with decisions? The answer for the past thirteen years has been to decide if a Lasting Power of Attorney is needed or desirable. It is not for everyone, but it is usually a much more effective and safe way of protecting a person and their interests, rather than having to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed Deputy.

Local History
Big Day at the Abbey Lawn!
T
he days of the ‘football programme’ may be a hazy memory for many and the schoolboy collections may have long been consigned to either Ebay, to the specialist collector or to the re-cycling bin. Fortunately, my own collection remains intact, and this month, we feature a particular favourite of mine, one maybe lacking the gloss and the glamour – no George Best or Bobby Charlton here, but instead we see “local heroes” like Terry Bates and Hughie Lane! The occasion was the 1962 Hospital Cup Final, where Midland League side, Bourne Town, were hosting the fearsome Nottingham Forest from the top-flight league of the time, “The First Division”. It had been a curious year, in as much as the champions of this particular season had been Ipswich Town, ahead of Burnley and Spurs. Cardiff and Chelsea were relegated, whilst Forest finished in nineteenth place (out of twenty-two clubs). No doubting the appeal of this particular game though, especially when keeping goal for them was Bourne’s very own Peter Grummitt, still only a nineteen-year-old recent recruit, having made the move to the City Ground from the mighty Langtoft FC! A regular favourite between the Forest sticks for a decade, Peter was to earn three England
Under 23 caps, and maybe, had not the legendary Gordon Banks been filling the full England jersey so consistently, then Peter might have seen more international action. Forest were genuine title contenders in 1966/67 and his performances in goal were a central part of their challenge, as they finished runners-up to Manchester United. Forest conceded only forty-one goals in fortytwo games, with Peter keeping thirteen clean sheets. Leaving Forest in 1970, after 352 senior appearances, he would go on to play seven more seasons, firstly at Sheffield Wednesday, then at Brighton and Hove Albion. In 2018, the Nottingham Post’s reporter, Paul Taylor, included Peter Grummitt in his top fifty “best players to have pulled on the Garibadi red”, describing him as “an agile shot stopper, an assured handler of the ball and essentially just a reliable, consistent performer for Forest”. The match day programme for the Bourne v Forest game included an array of local firms and shops proud to be advertising their wares, a selection of which is displayed here. Who could ever forget “Nosey” Parker’s sweet shop opposite the Tudor picture house on North Street, just along from Mac Nixon’s sweet shop, Elkin’s chippy and Stubbs bakery? Despite seeking confirmation of the result of the Bourne v Forest game from John Banks, (former local referee and former classmate of the said Mr Grummitt) my memory lets me down. If anyone is happy to share the score, plus any other gems from their past, please get in touch. Up the Wakes!

Pets and Vets
Brexit, Pet Passports and Rabies!
O
ne thing that most of us are looking forward to when we achieve normality after this Covid-19 pandemic, is going on an overseas holiday. However, we now have the giant hurdle of Brexit to get over and the red tape surrounding this. We know that the rules around the Pet Passport are changing and British Pet Passports are not going to be allowed for travel through the EU as they were before.
Instead, an Export Health Certificate is required from your designated vet and certain criteria must be passed in order that one can be issued within ten days of travel. As I am writing this, the final stages of the negotiations are taking place and the finished details have not been signed off so, in such a fluid situation, it is vital you read the guidance from the Government website before planning any trips with your pets. However, we must remember the reasons why that legislation exists and why it can be complex. Rabies is an old and feared virus and has been around for thousands of years. It doesn’t just affect our dogs but also wild carnivores, ruminants and bats as well as humans. The reason it is so feared is that, once symptoms begin, there is no treatment, and it is
100% fatal. Over 55,000 people die of rabies world-wide every Wise Words By Deirdre Wilson year. The virus is passed from an infected animal in its saliva. If it bites or licks another animal – or person – the virus hides in the muscle for a few days, then travels up the nerves to the brain. This is a slow journey and can take weeks or months, even up to a year, and which is why animal quarantine is for six months. Once rabies reaches its destination, progression of the disease is rapid, and death occurs within ten to fourteen days. The animal’s personality alters; confident animals become shy and nervous. It causes hallucinations and animals often attack randomly – a very convenient behaviour change to ensure the next victim is bitten with infected saliva. Finally, it causes paralysis of the throat and, as the animal cannot swallow, it froths at the mouth. Death is caused by suffocation, as the muscles used for breathing become paralysed. A very nasty disease indeed! Britain (and a few other islands) has been rabiesfree since 1902 although there have been a few isolated instances. If it gets loose in our own wildlife, then the results will be devastating. So, the legislation around protecting our island from rabies must be thorough and robust. Remember too that Eire is in the EU and travel to Ireland will be affected by the new legislation. Perhaps, in the short term, even if travel restrictions due to Covid are relaxed, it may be better to leave your pets safely at home until we are sure that our countryside and our people can be safe from another deadly virus. A happy and healthy 2021 to every one of you and your pets from all at Alder Vets.

Still Alive and Well... But Not Yet!
I
Bourne SciFest is a week-long Science Festival for the young people of Bourne and district.
t started in 2000 when a small group of teachers and helpers decided to hold science-based presentations in the Corn Exchange. It was so successful that it has been held every two years since, with over 2,500 children attending each event.
Over the years SciFest has undergone a number of changes. Initially the children were all transported to the Corn Exchange, but the logistics and cost of this meant that the format had to be changed. In 2008 it was decided that instead of the children moving, the presenters would travel to the schools to give their shows. This obviously caused less disruption to the schools and allowed the event to be held at no cost to the children. A wide range of science topics have been covered by a variety of presenters. Subjects have included Tropical Rainforests, Science Magic, Astronomy, Exotic Animals, Newton’s Theory of Gravity, The Magic of Numbers and The Science of Fireworks. Presenters have included Chris Packham, Nick Baker and Johnny Ball, ably supported by some old friends, James Soper, Mark Atkinson, Dave Shaw, Matt Pritchard and many others. Children were also invited to bring their parents to two evening shows held in the Corn Exchange. SciFest enables presenters to bring the wow factor to the classroom, and we hope give children an insight into the wonders of science, nurturing an interest in the world around them and how it works. Unfortunately, owing to the Coronavirus none of this was able to happen in 2020.
64
Bourne
However, one of our regular presenters, Dr. Matt Pritchard has kindly put together an online presentation which the SciFest committee has purchased and is offering free to all primary schools within our area. The presentation comes with teacher notes and extension activities prompted by the presentation. We want to keep the momentum of SciFest going and this is an ideal way to bring science to the classroom and keep safe in these unprecedented times. Of course, this all costs quite a lot of money but the Festival has been generously supported by a wide range of local charities and businesses. The committee hope to resume more normal arrangements in 2022, with a preliminary presentation in May, hopefully to be held in the Witham School lecture theatre. They look forward to seeing you there. Watch out in the local press for more details. JANUARY 2021

SMART stands for Small to Medium Area Repair Technology, and is a technique used for repairing small areas of car bodywork damage, focusing strictly on the area that needs to be repaired rather than needing to repair or replace an entire car panel. Using this method means that we are able to provide car repairs that are much quicker and cheaper than those using traditional car repair techniques.
