Welcome to your February issue... A very warm welcome (unlike the weather!) to you all.

T

his month, of course, we’ve got Valentine’s Day on February 14th where we can all stoke those romantic fires, so let’s ignore all the rain and gales out there, (Storm Christoph about to join us, as I write!) and cosy up inside and enjoy this month’s collection of features and ideas brought together for you by our wonderful team. Approaching the anniversary of the coronavirus reaching our shores, I vowed to make one month in the year free of Covid -19 references, so this February is the one! Keep safe and think of those sunny days to come – things will improve, and that begins when you have to stay indoors with your loved one to celebrate Valentine’s Day!

This month, our attention can switch briefly from the ongoing pandemic and our encouraging vaccination statistics to Valentine’s Day. Unfortunately, our regular contributors who would normally be welcoming large numbers of diners and buyers of romantic merchandise at this time of year continue to be ‘locked-down’. Let’s hope that an upturn in the economy, post-pandemic, will bring relief to everyone struggling for survival right now. There are brighter days ahead! By the way, if love is blind, how come lingerie is so popular around Valentine’s Day? And finally, I put my NHS Donor Card in the ATM last week by mistake – it cost me an arm and a leg! Enjoy the read!

February GARDENING TIPS

F

ebruary is a month of preparation and re-awakening as spring draws nearer. The best thing when planting is to be guided by the weather, rather than to stick to a strict regime. If you have not completed your winter digging, now is the time, so long as the soil is not too wet or frozen: incorporate as much rotted down manure and compost as you can. There is no need to dig it in, as the worms will do that for you, and then cover it to keep the soil warm and some of the rain off. A number of seeds can be planted indoors, ready for planting out when the weather improves. These include broad beans, Brussels, leeks, onions, salad leaves, tomatoes, peas, spinach, summer cabbage and sprouting broccoli. Onion and shallot sets can be planted but, if the soil is too wet, they could be started off in plugs, putting them almost on the surface of the compost. They can then be put in the greenhouse or cold frame. Broad beans can also be planted in pots under cover, ready to be planted out later. All of your seed potatoes for the year should have been purchased by the end of this month and spread out in egg boxes or seed trays for “chitting”. Make sure they are in a cool, dark room; in the dark, they will produce long, translucent shoots. Remove all but three of the “chits” as it is believed that this produces larger potatoes.

March Bourne

Other jobs for February include: • Make sure winter cabbages, cauliflowers and broccoli are netted against hungry pigeons, whose food supply is a little short at this time of year. • Remove dead leaves from cabbages and sprouts – if they start to rot, they can spread mould and mildew. • Prune autumn raspberry canes by cutting right down to the ground. • Bare-rooted fruit trees can still be planted but this will be your last opportunity. • Feed and mulch fruit trees and bushes. • Winter prune currants, blackberries, hybrid berries, gooseberries. It really is the last call for pruning fruit trees as they will soon be making new growth. • If you know where you are planting your brassicas, check the pH and, if needs be, add some lime to bring it up to 6.5 or 7. Also add some extra manure to the potato patch. • The compost heap might benefit from a bit of attention. Rake it through with a fork to aerate it, add water if it seems dry and then re-cover it to keep it warm. • Oh, and don’t forget, if you haven’t dug a bean trench, now would be a good opportunity. Just dig a spade’s depth down and then throw in all your kitchen waste, newspaper, cardboard etc and layer it with soil – couldn’t be easier! Happy gardening!

Electric Vehicle Charging to Keep You Moving So, you’ve made the decision to drive an electric vehicle … your next step is to ensure that it’s charged for when you need it.

E

nter… Electron EV Solutions, the Peterborough-based specialists who offer a fast, reliable and cost-effective, home installation service. Focusing on the domestic market and operating across the Midlands and South East, Electron EV Solutions will survey and install an EV charging point for your electric vehicle.

Your safety at home is, of course, paramount so Electron EV Solutions only install chargers that are certified by the BSI and they must also be IP rated, (an industry-standard rating used to define the levels of protection against solid objects being inserted into the unit such as fingers or hands).

ADDITIONAL FEATURES AND OPTIONS

Working in conjunction with their sister company, Marshall Electrical Services, all their engineers are trained and certified installers. Registered with NAPIT and Trustmark (the quality assurance bodies for this industry), Electron EV Solutions are also members of Investors in the Environment (iiE) which is a national environmental accreditation scheme.

Some EV chargers have a built-in GPRS communication system, enabling you to manage them from your mobile device. You can start or stop your vehicle charge, check on the live status and set charging notifications. It will also give you the charging history, such as total energy used and CO2 savings.

EV PRODUCTS

WHAT NOW?

There are several types of charger, and several manufacturers producing a range of products. The EV charger is easy to install and maintain on the outside of your property. The unit runs off a 32A supply and the most common charger is a 7kW charger, taking power from your consumer unit or solar panels, if you have them.

WHAT’S MORE …

Being located on the outside of your property makes the charger susceptible to damage, so certain features come as standard, such as being flame and corrosion resistant, weatherproofed against the elements and impact-resistant. Most chargers have an LED light that will tell you the charging 8

status and when it is complete. You also have options in terms of the aesthetics of an EV charger.

Bourne

Why not let Electron EV Solutions talk you through the options, and recommend the best charger for you? All the manufacturers they work with offer a 3-year warranty on their EV chargers and Electron EV give you a 12-month installation warranty.

the government is encouraging us all to switch to electric or hybrid vehicles. As part of this, the Office of Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV) offers a grant scheme on all home EV charger installations. What a Way to Welcome in Your Big Five – O!

A

former “Miss Bourne” winner is approaching her fiftieth birthday in a most energetic way, by running fifty miles in the month leading up to her “Big Day” on February 4th to raise money for ‘Breast Cancer Now’. Joanne Joyce is no stranger to raising money for charity, having run the 2016 London Marathon for ‘Children with Cancer’ and then the Morpeth 2 Newcastle Marathon for ‘Breast Cancer Now’, six months later! As the mother of Lydia (25) and Harry (22) explains, “I chose the charity ‘Breast Cancer Now’ in memory of my sister-in-law Barbara, who sadly passed away in 2007 and also for friends who have bravely faced diagnosis and are thankfully getting the

all-clear following treatment. Like many charities, ‘Breast Cancer Now’ needs extra help right now.” Despite having vowed “never again!” after the London Marathon, Joanne finds the urge to help others far too strong and has adopted a “little and often” strategy. “These days the longest run I do is three miles; it keeps my hips and knees happy but does mean I need to run most days after work and days off, in order to reach my target. I am fortunate to have my lovely daughter Lydia joining me on her bike,” Joanne explains. If you would like to help Joanne with this fabulous gesture, please go to www.justgiving.com/ joannejoyce50 and make all her pain feel worthwhile!

Local Singer/Songwriter Releases Debut Single

Rising star in the music world, Tabi Gervis, has released her debut single, “Wonderland”, on January 15th, with more to follow.

Now studying at the Academy of Contemporary Music in Guildford, Tabi (18) carried the hopes of her former classmates at Bourne Academy in 2017, when she appeared on ITV’s “The Voice: Kids” show. Although naturally disappointed at not winning the contest, Rippingale resident, Tabi, said at the time, “I will continue doing what I love. It has opened up many doors and I’m not going to get down in the dumps.” Sure enough, the ambitious Ms Gervis has been writing and recording music for four years now and has wanted to release music ever since. already been played on “BBC Introducing: The South”, BBC Radio’s platform supporting unsigned, undiscovered, and under-the-radar UK talent. I

She wrote “Wonderland” two years ago in Parsons Green, London, with the producer, Max Marlow, along with some other songs which will be released very soon. “Wonderland” has

t gives artists the opportunity to be played on BBC local radio and on some national channels too, something which Tabi has always dreamed of doing.

Greater Peterborough University Technical College (GPUTC) Engineers Win Royal Navy Challenge Peterborough’s only dedicated STEM school, Greater Peterborough UTC, saw Year 13 Engineering students Beck Morgan, Joshua Miranda, Jack Parker and Aron Allport announced as the winners of this year’s Royal Navy Engineering Challenge.

The prestigious challenge, held in partnership with Eaton Ltd, Babcock and BAE Systems, invited school groups to design and build a remote-controlled vessel to deliver humanitarian aid to a hurricane-hit island. GPUTC’s team walked away with three awards: the Overall Prize, Key Stage 5 Overall Prize and the Key F E BRUA RY 2021

Stage 5 Presentation Prize.

The competition aims to inspire young people to engage with science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM subjects) in real-world contexts. This year, over sixty teams from schools across the country entered the challenge, which began in late 2019. After initial knockout rounds, only fifteen teams remained to go onto the finals. These were due to take place in March but were delayed by the coronavirus lockdown. The Challenge finally resumed recently, with events being filmed by the Royal Navy at HMS Sultan

in Portsmouth and shared with the competing schools. Supervising teacher, Mark Jarrett (Teacher of Engineering), said, “I am immensely proud of the team, not only for winning the competition but also for the manner in which they conducted themselves in a challenging year. In spite of setbacks, the team powered through and overcame the multiple obstacles that both the competition and Covid presented. The team embraced our GPUTC core values and demonstrated great resilience as well as engineering excellence to successfully get the task done.”

Could We Be Your Perfect Match?

L

BY JASON TREADWELL, MANAGING DIRECTOR

andlords frequently ask us whether they can bring their rental property over to Newton Fallowell without any disruption to their tenant or to their monthly payments. Many landlords assume that to change your letting agent you must wait until the end of an existing tenancy, which is not the case! A tenancy agreement is a contract between the landlord and the tenant, and changing agent does not affect the legal rights of either. If a letting agent has not been delivering on service, it is likely that the tenant will be pleased that the management is changing, and they may be more likely to stay in the property for longer. We are experienced in taking over management from other letting agents and using these:

10 Simple Steps:

1

Contractual Obligations We can assist you with understanding your existing agent’s contract and any financial penalties that you should be aware of and advise you on how to give notice.

2

We’ll refund your exit fees Don’t worry if your old agent tried to charge you for leaving; we will cover the cost of your exit fees, subject to terms and conditions.

3

Contact the tenant We will liaise with the tenant directly regarding the changeover, letting them know who we are and when we will be taking over the property.

4

Contact your current agent We will liaise with your agent to start the switch process and advise them of the process we will undertake.

5

Obtain tenancy documentation Including the tenancy agreement, deposit scheme prescribed information, referencing and check-in documents and inventory report.

6

Obtain property documentation Including safety certificates and warranties. We will check that your property is fully compliant with current safety legislation.

7

Collect keys We will collect all sets of keys that are held by your previous agent and register them on to our system.

8

Transfer of deposit We will transfer your tenant’s deposit and issue them with a new deposit certificate and prescribed information if necessary.

9

Arrange a property visit We will arrange to visit your property as soon as possible; inspections are then carried out every quarter.

10

Change of standing order We will make sure that your tenant updates their standing order to our client account to pay their monthly rent. It’s as simple as that! We’d be delighted to discuss with you about how easy it is to switch your rental property to Newton Fallowell with no interruption to your rental payments at all. We don’t want you to be out of pocket by switching your management over to Newton Fallowell so once you’ve successfully switched, we’ll refund your exit fees, subject to terms and conditions. by Eileen Le Voi at Safe Local Trades With the pandemic making it more and more difficult for “lockdown lonely hearts” to meet potential partners face-to-face, rogue romancers are looking to steal more than just their affections! Last year, UK victims of online romance fraud were conned out of more than an estimated £63 million by love rats posing as potential partners by using a fake profile. These people are experts at grooming their victims and their endgame is always about how much money they can extract. Here are a few simple steps to keep yourself, and your loved ones, safe: on't rush into an online relationship. Get to know the person, not the profile, ensuring you ask plenty of questions and it is paramount that you meet virtually in person via video chat.

Holiday Entitlement for Part-time Employees

O

Odin HR has the Answers

din HR is often asked about the calculation of annual holiday entitlement and the treatment of Bank Holidays for part-time employees. It is important that holiday is calculated and paid correctly – an employee may take breaches to an Employment Tribunal under a claim for “unlawful deduction of wages”. The UK’s statutory minimum annual holiday entitlement is 5.6 weeks (28 days), which can include Public/Bank Holidays. (Businesses may offer a contractually higher allowance.) Part-timers who work five days a week will receive the same annual holiday as their fulltime colleagues (their holiday pay for the day will reflect their normal daily working hours). Where part-timers are employed for less than five days per week, holiday entitlement is prorated according to the number of working days in their contract of employment. Let’s take an employee whose normal working hours are three days per week: If the annual holiday entitlement for a full-time employee is 28 days, including Bank Holidays, the part-time employee should receive 16.8 days (28 days, divided by 5, multiplied by 3 days worked). The part-day (0.8) may not legally be rounded down but neither does the employer have to round it up.

Public/Bank Holidays that fall on our parttime employee’s normal working day should be paid as holiday and deducted from their annual holiday entitlement of 16.8 days. Employers should consider at the start of their holiday year which Bank Holidays will fall on the parttimer’s normal working days and the employee will need to set aside enough holidays from their annual entitlement to take these days as paid leave. Where our part-time employee is contracted to work Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, and Christmas Day and New Year’s Day fall on a Friday, these are normal working days and therefore the employee will need to keep two days of their holiday entitlement for these, and and the employer should pay the days as holiday. Where a Bank Holiday falls on a non-working day, there is no requirement for the employer to pay the part-timer nor for the employee to use holiday entitlement. Holiday calculation is less straightforward for partyear employees i.e. those that work term-time only and is currently the subject of legal challenge. The Supreme Court will hear the case of Harpur Trust v Brazel in November this year to decide whether part-year workers should receive the same 5.6 weeks’ holiday as full-year workers or whether it should be capped at 12.07% of annualised hours, typically the practice in the education sector.

Your Finances

Buy! Sell! Buy! Sell!!

D

BY MATTHEW BIGGS – FINANCIAL PLANNER

oes your idea of investing involve people standing around shouting at each other and making random hand gestures, trying to get the best price for whatever it is they are buying or selling? If it is, believe me – you are not alone!

Before I entered the financial services industry, I thought this was how it worked and the mere thought of it put me off the idea of investing, as it all seemed very confusing and, quite frankly, intimidating. However, I was relieved to find out that, when it comes to investing, the above scenario could not be further from the truth. In fact, the concept of investing is a very straightforward, relaxing approach – providing it is done correctly. For me, this means taking time with clients to make sure they are educated on the process of investing. There are lots of ways of investing

26

Bourne

your money and there is no such thing as a “one size fits all” approach. It is essential that I fully understand the client’s willingness to invest and the level of risk they are prepared to take. The biggest stumbling block I find is not everyone is prepared to accept risk – and this is perfectly normal. However, I believe this is mainly due to the fact they have not been educated on what investment risk really means and how it would work in the real world. There are, of course, perils and pitfalls when it comes to investing, but this is where we work together to make sure the clients are comfortable with and, most importantly, understand any agreed investment approach. If you have considered investing, but have been unsure of how or where to start, please contact our office on 01778 342291 to arrange a FREE initial consultation with one of our friendly and experienced Financial Planners.

Love Letters

Intimate Correspondence between Famous Lovers

BY JANICE HADLOW

BY ANDREA CLARKE

‘Will delight Pride and Prejudice fans’ - The Independent.

In an age of emails, tweets and emojis, this beautiful selection of original love letters invites us into a privileged realm and reminds us why the written word is so expressive and revealing. The thirty handwritten notes included in this book span centuries, cultures and continents.

In Jane Austen’s ‘Pride and Prejudice’, Mary is the middle of the five Bennet girls and the plainest of them all, so what hope does she have? One by one, her sisters marry Jane and Lizzy for love; Lydia for some semblance of respectability - but Mary, it seems, is destined to remain single and live out her life at Longbourn, at least until her father dies and the house is bequeathed to the reviled Mr Collins. But when that fateful day finally comes, she slowly discovers that perhaps there is hope for her, after all. Simultaneously a wonderfully warm homage to Jane Austen and a delightful new story in its own right. Witty and uplifting, it will make you feel - and cheer - for Mary as you never have before.

They contain expressions of every shade of love, from the joy of falling in love to the pain of unrequited passion. Together they remind us that there is simply nothing quite like receiving a personal handwritten note from the one you love.

Alexa, what is there to know about love? BY BRIAN BILSTON The perfect, witty gift for Valentine’s and beyond. A wonderful collection of poems about love in all its forms, covering everything from romantic love to familial love, to long-distance love, and even love on the internet. There’s something for even the most jaded romantic within these pages.

Desire - 100 of Literature’s Sexiest stories CHOSEN BY MARIELLA FROSTRUP Strict mistresses, naughty maids, handsome gardeners and disarming strangers; literature is awash with love, sex and desire. This collection brings together one hundred of the best examples, hand-picked by Mariella Frostrup and the Erotic Review. Whether you’re looking for love, lust or something in between, this gorgeous anthology is the perfect gift... or bedside companion. 32

Recipe

Slimming World

Strawberry TART HEARTS

The way to the heart is definitely through the stomach... and with just four ingredients, these perfect pastry puds are a dream to make so why not treat that special someone to some ‘sweet love’ on Valentine's Day?!

Ingredients

Makes four (4½ Syns per tart) 100g ready-rolled reduced-fat puff pastry 8 tsp fat-free natural fromage frais 8 small fresh strawberries, hulled and thinly sliced ½ level tsp icing sugar Find this recipe and many more at www.slimmingworld.co.uk

Method

• Pre-heat your oven to 220°C/fan 200°C/gas 7. • Cut out four hearts measuring about 8cm x 8cm from the pastry using a heart-shaped cutter (or use a template made from card). Using a sharp knife, score a 0.25cm border around the edges, taking care not to cut through the pastry. • Put the pastry hearts in a baking tray lined with non stick baking paper and bake for 10-12 minutes or until risen and golden. Leave to cool. • Press down the middle of each piece of pastry to create heart-shaped nests. Spoon the fromage frais into each tartlet, top with the strawberries and evenly dust with icing sugar to serve. 40 34

Tips to Cope wi So here we are again, “locked down” in the Covid-19 pandemic. Why not try some of our top ten, tried and tested, tips to help you cope?

1

Catch up with friends

2

Meditation

Pick up the phone and get chatting with friends and relatives as well, especially elderly ones and those living alone; they’d be especially glad to hear from you.

One of the best things you can do for mental health is to incorporate meditation into your daily ritual. Not only will this help you remain calm, it may also help to boost your immune system.

3 Get fit

Push back your furniture and you’ve got yourself a gym! Then you can exercise every day, keeping strong, fit and supple. You’ll need a mat or some cushions for floor exercises, and ideally some props, such as a ball, beanbag or a set of weights. If you have a blood pressure monitor, you can track your increasing fitness.

5

4

Be Creative

Ever dreamed of having the time to write a book, produce poetry or create some music? Perhaps a penchant for fine art? Now is the time for you!

Prepare some tasty meals

Research and produce some tasty meals and treats. Your normal lifestyle may not allow for much cooking, but now you have all the time in the world.

1

Bourne

ith Another Lockdown 6

Learn a new language

This is the ideal time to start, or polish up a language you already have some grounding in. When you’ve chosen your language, go online and scroll through the lists of organizations and individuals offering relevant tutoring.

7

Play games

Dig out all your old board games or card packs. Why not join an online club to play the game of your choice with real, live opponents? If you want more physical activity, set an obstacle course around your furniture or, if possible, outside.

8

Earn money online

If you’re interested in enhancing your income, browse the listings for recommended earning routes, then look into your preferred options more closely for an informed choice. Many people succeed in earning pocket-money, or much more, online.

10

Make some home improvements

9 Read

Open a book, real or virtual, and escape to the world of fiction. Alternatively, there’s a wealth of non-fiction publications to explore, from “How to” guides and subject-specializing books to biographies and true stories. Many people find poetry helpful in challenging situations.

Here is the chance to focus on improving your home without interruption. Whilst major works might have to wait, you can at least rearrange the furniture and swap your pictures around. If you have access to paint, wallpaper or varnish, you can also do some decorating.

F E BRUA RY 2021

Finally,

just remember there are always others worse off than yourself. Please don’t forget your elderly or vulnerable neighbours; an offer of help, a wave from the window, or a treat left on the doorstep is enough to brighten their day.

NEED

THE LAW AT VALENTINE’S DAY?

V

ADVICE FROM RICHARD WOOD

alentine’s Day is about being with the one we love and wanting what is best for them. However, that works best over the long-term and not just one day. A restaurant will serve an enjoyable meal with an appropriate setting and the florist will deliver many types of flowers and probably roses. What then, can the lawyer do? In the medium and long-term, the law can provide a lot of support and protection to our loved one and the wider family. We can care for our loved ones in a real and long-lasting way by leaving a will that provides certainty as to who inherits from us when we die, without taking any risks that the law of Intestacy might not achieve. Many people can lose out if a will is not made. For instance,

unmarried couples must consider each other in their wills if they want to guarantee each of them rights. This is particularly important where the property is held in only one of their names. If we are concerned that our health may be failing, or we may have difficulty in mobility, appointing each other attorney may be advisable so that each party in a couple can assist the other. Before marriage or any long-term, ‘live-in’ relationship, understanding the responsibilities and rights of each of the parties is helpful. Historically, it has been less usual, however, for couples to take legal advice, unless they are entering into a pre-nuptial agreement. Such agreements provide for what should happen if the relationship fails and may be more effective in the early years, depending on the circumstances. Advice should always be taken. Declarations of Trust in Property will help.

Out of Depression

hilst it is normal for everyone to feel sad or upset from time to time, when these feelings are overwhelming, persistent, or are affecting your ability to function on a daily basis, it may be that you are suffering from depression. Everyone feels a bit low sometimes, but depression is much more than this. It may be that you suffer from feelings of helplessness, guilt or worthlessness; perhaps you have difficulty making decisions, being overwhelmed when concentrating on anything; maybe you feel tired and pessimistic all the time.

Feeling hopeless and helpless? In the depressed brain, the primitive part of the mind is much more active, and this part of the brain is normally very negative. This makes us feel hopeless and unable to see a way out and can be a lonely and unforgiving place. The depressed brain is starved of positive chemicals and restricts your ability to think clearly and resourcefully. Depression takes away our confidence and our ability to remain rational and positive about ourselves and our situations. It is a very negative place to be. Our primitive and depressed mind is designed to focus on problems and be vigilantly looking out for danger. In this state of mind, we lose the ability to think clearly and intellectually. Hypnotherapy is designed to manage the chemistry inside your brain to help you move towards an optimistic outlook.

Want to stay in bed? When we feel depressed, we want to put our life on pause and stop interacting with the rest of the world. We are much more tired and lacking in healthy energy. We just want to stay curled up in

our duvets and shut ourselves away. If you have been depressed, you may have noticed that you can ruminate or worry a lot during those periods. This type of worrying is typified by taking an all-ornothing thinking style. This is because, when we are stressed and emotionally aroused beyond a certain point, the mind takes the fight/flight approach and looks at the worst, most extreme, scenario. We don’t look at our situation from a rational perspective, taking in all the possibilities like we might do when we are more relaxed.

“A pill cannot make your unconscious conscious.” How does hypnotherapy help? Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can offer an alternative approach, helping you to focus on the positives in your life and working towards a brighter future. It works well as a supplementary therapy, working in tandem with other medical interventions. We work together to help you to understand how your brain works, why you might be suffering the way you do and how we can get you back to being the person you want to be. You already have all the resources that you need, and Solution Focused Hypnotherapy could help you to find them.

Life in Lockdown at the Age of Ninety-one

Julie Symcox, co-founder of AHM Installations, tells us how life has changed – both for her and her ninety-one-year old father, Ray – during lockdown.

I

’ve worked as a nanny and nurse, in residential care homes and as a Samaritan, and we now run an accessible bathrooms business. We’re lucky to live next door to my ninety-oneyear-old father, Ray. We’ve always been a close family, but Dad and I became closer when Mum sadly passed away in 2013. bathrooms safer, at a cost they can afford.

“When the pandemic started, the first few weeks were alright,” Dad said. “It was so quiet; you could hear the sound of birds. It felt very restful. I’ve kept busy around the house and garden. I’m head cook and bottle-washer, so I don’t have any spare time! I do miss some things though like the weekly luncheon club at the village hall. I haven’t seen friends since March. And I miss going to the pub on a Friday.”

People call us just to ask for advice. We will always do our best to find a solution, whatever the budget. Please feel free to call our family-run team on 01522 500288. We also offer discounts for military veterans and for those with dementia.

Very sadly, my Auntie Dorothy – Dad’s ninety-sixyear-old sister – died this year and Dad couldn’t visit her while she was in hospital or go to the funeral. “That wasn’t very nice,” he said. My brother Rob and I took it in turns to get Dad’s food shopping. Then in mid-December, Dad and I decided to go to Aldi together for the first time. “That was the first time I’d gone out of the village,” he said. “The family have helped so I’ve not gone without, but I do miss it.” My husband Simon and I set up AHM Installations twenty years ago because we know that small changes can make a big difference to people’s comfort and independence in their own home. Mayor

Words from the Mayor

COUNCILLOR COLIN PATTISON

We find ourselves once again in another lockdown situation

T

he encouraging glimmer of hope is that the initial rolling out of the mass vaccination programme does seem to be progressing well. We must all remain “POSITIVE” that brighter happier days are just around the corner, fingers crossed. A final mention of 2020 - On December 18th, my wife Fiona, our Town Clerk, (Ian Sismey), Mrs Anna McIvor and I went around Dyke to judge the eleven contestants for the “Christmas Lights Competition”. All the entries were worthy of a mention and we came up with three worthy winners, including a special “Juniors” prize. A big thank you to Anna, who was asked to present the prizes on my behalf.

Butterfield Day Centre/ Community Pantry: On January 11th, I decided to “answer the call” and assist the newly created Community Pantry at the Butterfield Day Centre. Ably assisted by the Town Clerk, Ian Sismey, we turned up unannounced with just over £100 of foodstuffs and supplies that I had purchased, to bolster their somewhat depleted stocks. It’s probably fair to say that two of the Butterfield’s stalwarts, Jenny Peel and Clare Good, were somewhat taken aback at our arrival to put it mildly, as we walked in numerous times with armfuls

of various food items! It was a pleasure to be able to help out and feel that you are “doing something good for the local community”. Please support this absolutely wonderful initiative in any way you can.

Council News: The Town Council has had a busy January. Four consecutive Tuesday night meetings via the ZOOM platform have seen us conduct standing committee meetings for Amenities, Highways and Planning, Finance and General Purpose and most recently Public Open Forum and Full Council. All these meetings have had extensive agendas, along with the completion of our Annual Budget and the Bourne “precept” request, all submitted to SKDC. We continue to help and support residents’ requests for assistance, such as prescription collections etc, especially for those who cannot get out or who are shielding once more. On January 15th, the Town Clerk and I met up with a local resident, Mr Trawford, with a view to enhancing and improving the play facilities on the public open space on Northfields, Bourne. Hopefully, with financial support from various partners, this can and will be positively advanced to provide better play and activity facilities in the coming months. Stay safe and stay positive! Councillor Colin Pattison.

BY COLEEN EVERITT, ALTO ELECTRICAL LIMITED

So, You Need a Rewire?

O

ne of the pieces of feedback I have had from a customer is that they didn’t realise how involved a rewire would be and how much dust would be created, but rewiring your home is not usually something that can be avoided, because it’s something that is only usually suggested when the installation in your home is in need of replacement.

shift workers. But most people are happy to live with the noise, as long as they know how long it will last. Alto Electrical have a letter template to send to your neighbours that will warn them that the work is going to be carried out, how long it will last, and it will provide them with our contact details, in case they need to discuss anything, such as where we are parked.

To prepare you … you are likely to have holes that will need plastering. Unless you are having the installation surface mounted in trunking, or the walls of the building are hollow there is going to be damage! We always minimise it as much as we can, because we don’t like leaving holes in walls either. We can arrange for the walls to be plastered for you, if required.

out when they are having a rewire; not only are you going to avoid the worst of the dust, but we will be able to get finished much quicker if we’re not having to rewire circuits in stages.

But don’t worry! Everything is able to be fixed, and once it is decorated, everything will look lovely and fresh, your electrical installation is going to last you between twenty-five and fifty years, and everything will be safe for you and your family.

MOVE OUT - I often ask my customers to move

DON’T GO TOO FAR - When we are working on your home, there may be decisions we need you to make. For example, if we can’t access a certain area we would check about going via another route. Sometimes we need to ask questions, like, if we can’t find your stop cock to bond it, we may ask you if you know where it is. You may know that the kitchen used to be in a different room which we could then look in.

PUT THINGS AWAY - Alto Electrical always

So how can we make this as painless as possible? WARN THE NEIGHBOURS - Nobody likes conflict between neighbours, but having noisy renovation work can cause problems, especially if they are

cover things up when we are carrying out any dusty electrical work, but there is a lot of dust created in the process. So even with everything covered up, it is impossible to remove all of the dust sheets without disturbing it and getting it in the air and it will resettle on your surfaces.

FENCHURCH HOUSE CARE HOME IN SPALDING

“A very strong example of what a care home should be”

M

oving to a care home can feel daunting at any time but especially during the pandemic. At Fenchurch House Care Home in Spalding, dedicated Customer Relations Advisor, Morgan Hicks, is the first point of contact for families who are making an enquiry for care. Morgan’s role is to help people through the whole journey of coming into the care home, answering any questions, organising the move in, and supporting people to settle into life at Fenchurch House. One resident who recently spent time at Fenchurch House for respite care explains, “This place is a very strong example of what a care home should be. On researching the home, a vast amount of thought has gone into the overall planning, with gracious décor and facilities to keep the occupiers entertained as part of their recuperation. The staff have a warm attitude, stemming from ‘flash’ meetings every morning to make sure the home is properly run. A well-organised, well-run establishment.” Morgan is a ‘Dementia Friend’ and keen to share her knowledge and experience of caring for people living with dementia. Whether it’s signposting, assistance and advice or just a friendly ear, Morgan is happy to talk through anything you need. Commenting on the activities that residents had enjoyed over the festive period, one family member said, “Well done to your staff; your care and commitment is appreciated by our family, one and all. So wonderful to see my dad laughing and wearing a Christmas hat again. He absolutely loves Christmas and always made our Christmases full of love and laughter.”

48

When new residents join the family at Fenchurch House, the Home Manager, Suria Webb, oversees their care plan, together with the specialist care team. The Wellbeing Team get to know people too, helping people to continue to enjoy hobbies and activities that are important to them. Everyone in the home is there to help people make the most of life, and Morgan will continue to support people and their families, ensuring important events and milestones are marked and celebrated. “Fenchurch House is designed with a five-star hotel in mind, with modern facilities, yet a welcoming and homely feel. It is as glamorous as it is comfortable, and our aim is for our home to become an extension of yours. Our team ensure people are relaxed and cared for throughout day and night and we love getting to know our residents, as they become part of the Fenchurch family,” said Morgan. “We completely understand how difficult it is for families to make the huge decision to move a loved one to a care home, especially during this difficult time. We can help people to choose the right home for them by sending them videos and showing them the room that their family member will move into. My advice is to call and speak to us. No question is too small. We can help with everything, from funding through to letting you know about mealtimes and haircuts,” Morgan went on to explain. If you have any questions about moving into a care home or would like to find out more about Fenchurch House Care Home in Spalding, contact Customer Relations Advisor, Morgan Hicks, on 01775 711 959 or e-mail morgan.hicks@countrycourtcare.com. TAKE CARE OF YOUR BODY

Put Yourself Top of Your Priority List BY CLAIRE GRAY, OWNER OF RENU

In the words of Jim Rohn, the American author and motivational speaker, “Take care of your body, it’s the only place you have to live.”

F

ebruary might be considered the month of love, but it is generally my least favourite time of the year. Days are short, the weather is cold, and the sky can feel low. In previous years, I have yearned to hibernate until the snowdrops and daffodils pop their heads up.

If this pandemic has taught me anything this particular month, it is to be careful what you wish for. Being ‘confined to barracks’ comes with a whole host of other challenges that we have been forced to live with since Covid-19 appeared in our lives. Staying at home has caused our routines to be scrambled and this can cause havoc on our personal wellbeing.

Most of us would consider this a cruel and unfair way to treat an animal, and yet many of us treat our own bodies with as little respect as we show for this poor dog! We know it’s very important at the moment to take care of our health. If you started the new year with the resolution of looking after yourself, whether it is to lose weight, to become fitter, eat more healthily, then now is the time to put yourself top of the priority list. Eat regular healthy meals, drink plenty of water, exercise daily and remember to rest. If you would like more information on how you can take care of your body during this lockdown period, you can contact Claire at www.clairegrayfitnesssolutions.co.uk.

We are often termed “a nation of pet lovers” and, even if you don’t own a pet, it is likely you would treat animals with kindness. Imagine having a dog and dragging it out of its bed every morning without breakfast, keeping it indoors, making it work all day without stopping for a break, throwing it a biscuit to keep it going, then finally feeding it before sending it to bed exhausted. Imagine repeating this exercise day after day, without giving it the correct amount of exercise, fresh air or rest.

“Margaret Beaufort of Bourne, Collyweston, Maxey and Deeping: The Tudor Dynasty”

T

BY MARGARET WAINWRIGHT

his month, we are delighted to be able to devote our Local History page to a recently published book by a present-day Bourne resident, Margaret Wainwright, about a former Bourne resident, Margaret Beaufort. Whilst the author may be well-remembered by many of her former pupils after her teaching career in both Bourne secondary schools, the subject of her fascinating biography seems to have gone relatively un-noticed in the years since her life (1443 – 1509); a life, described by the author as “a roller coaster of wealth and poverty, stability and frantic disaster.”

ABOUT THE BOOK: “Margaret Beaufort of Bourne, Collyweston, Maxey and Deeping: The Tudor Dynasty” is published by Grosvenor House Publishing. The biography recounts tales of her survival from the traumatic birth of her only son (Henry VII) when aged only thirteen, her ever-changing fortunes in the Wars of the Roses, being condemned as a traitor by Richard III and her eventual triumph, which saw her become the matriarch of the Tudor dynasty.

“So many of her family were either killed in battle, executed or, like her father, had committed suicide. Throughout all this, Margaret had to steer a course of diplomacy and humility, in order to survive but, at the same time, had to keep her strong resolve and courage. What Lady Margaret Beaufort, mother an achievement then in her finest of King Henry VII. Margaret concludes, “(The book) was written really for the people of Bourne, to share and enjoy the fact that Margaret Beaufort and her family, past and forward, lived in and owned the castle on the Well Head. I was staggered to learn that she lived here, but with so little knowledge of the fact on my part!” Tomb of Lady Margaret Beaufort in Westminster Abbey

Pets and Vets

Eye Problems

O

ne of the most common problems we see in veterinary practice is a red eye in dogs, cats, rabbits and especially guinea pigs. The eye is sore and itchy, and pets will commonly rub their faces with their paws or try to rub along furniture and carpets. Often, they are squinting, and the eye is half shut. A sticky discharge may be coming from the corner of the eye and the membranes of the inside of the eye (the conjunctiva) can be red and swollen.

Usually, this is due to conjunctivitis, an infection of the eyelids, and this can be quickly resolved with antibiotic eyedrops. Infections can be caught from other pets or by dust and dirt getting into the eye carrying bacteria. Allergies can also cause red eye and it may be that steroid drops are needed to cool the inflammation and make your pet more comfortable again. One of the checks that is made on red eyes is to drop in fluorescent eye drops. If the clear part of the eye (the cornea) is damaged, these drops will accumulate in the wound and will glow under light. This is known as a corneal ulcer. Thorns, bits of hay or straw, claw scratches and foreign bodies can all cause damage to the cornea and which is why smaller pets often end up with eye ulcers. Some animals have extra lashes around the eye that scratch the cornea continuously. Care is needed to prevent shampoos going in the eye, as chemicals can cause ulcers as well. If there is no foreign body such as a thorn still stuck in the eye, most ulcers will heal quickly, as long as the wound is kept infection-free. Your vet will

54

Bourne

Wise Words By Deirdre Wilson

usually prescribe antibiotic eye drops or cream to help the healing process. Pain relief may also be needed to make your pet more comfortable and some pets may need to wear ‘the cone of shame’ to prevent them rubbing at the eye too much. Some ulcers do become more difficult to heal. The edge of an ulcer can develop a lip which prevents new tissue filling the void and this is known as an indolent ulcer. Different types of eye drops, or surgical techniques, may be needed to clear this lip and encourage healing. Melting ulcers occur because of infections within the cornea. The infection produces enzymes which dissolve the corneal tissue to digest it, and at its worst can rupture the front of the eye. A particularly useful technique is to collect the animal’s own blood serum and use this as eyedrops to inactivate these enzymes. Most red eye problems are fairly easy to treat and heal well, but some take a lot more time and involvement. Never ignore a sore eye; early treatment is the key.

Indulge Yourselves this February! February is the month of romance, but why just have Valentine’s Day (February 14th) as your “Special day”? Surely, in these unprecedented times, when we all long for happier times to come, we can turn to the silver screen to lift up our spirits and get those lovely tingling feelings, as we cosy down with a good film.

Our resident, “Movie Maestro”, Tori, has compiled a list of twenty-eight movies to entertain you all over the romantic month of February, one for each day of the month (if you’ve got the stamina!)

Thurlby School Welcomes a New Assist Dog to the Pastoral Team

T

hurlby Community Primary Academy takes great pride in being an inclusive and caring school, where the wellbeing and happiness of their children is at the heart of everything they do! They have recently welcomed a new addition to the school’s pastoral team to help achieve this vison: a black Labrador puppy, Shadow, who is training to be Thurlby’s new ‘assist dog’.

Evidence shows that having an assist dog increases children’s empathy, responsibility and respect for all. Shadow is being supported in her training by a qualified animal assistance practitioner from Canine Assisted Learning. They are experts in the social, behavioural and learning benefits for children of having dogs in educational settings. Shadow’s owner and trainer, Marion Breidenbach, has been a classroom teacher at Thurlby for twenty years. She is now the school’s pastoral lead, working with the rest of the pastoral team to support children with concerns and worries that they have. Mrs Breidenbach will be putting together a programme of small group activities with the children involving Shadow and some individual sessions with some pupils, such as reading support.

Above: Shadow listening to early morning bird song

Shadow enjoying her training in the school grounds

Research shows that the animal-child bond in educational settings has a range of benefits for children, such as improving selfconfidence and social skills, as well as positively impacting overall academic achievement. At the moment, Shadow is still a puppy and in the early months of her training. She started coming into school in November when she was just ten weeks old, to get used to the hustle and bustle of the school environment. She has been touring all the classrooms and the children have been learning about how to interact safely with her and building their wider awareness of general safety around other dogs. Due to the impact of the pandemic, only some children are attending school at the moment. But when normality starts to return, Shadow’s role will be more important than ever, as some of the stresses and anxieties currently felt by many will be addressed. As one of Thurlby’s teachers said: “Even though Shadow is not yet fully trained, just being able to spend a few minutes with her lifts all our spirits during these challenging times. I have no doubt that the temperament and intelligence shown by Shadow, will result in her becoming an excellent assist dog; supporting our pupils and those within our school community over the coming years.”
