Welcome to your June issue... At last, hugging is now back on the agenda, face masks are starting to become less evident, indoor restaurant and pub visits are now possible, (handy, bearing in mind our unpredictable summer weather!) and many families may well be tempted to consider overseas travel at last.

I was fascinated to hear recently how the coronavirus pandemic has apparently been affecting how new parents are being influenced when choosing names for their new-borns. Names with positive connotations such as Hope and Hero are proving popular, as are names linked to happiness such as Bliss, Joy, Blithe and Felicity. Indigo (as part of the “NHS rainbow”) and Florence (as in Nightingale) are right up there, whilst Cora and Rona are definitely “no-nos” right now – can’t think why! Finally, I was attacked last week by a man carrying a bottle of milk and a block of cheese – How dairy! Enjoy the read … and all those Father’s Day goodies! (Hint, hint!)

Stamford’s Celebrity Designer Wants You to Steal the Show! Anna d’Amato, the owner of ‘Anna Couture Boutique’ in Stamford, took the ambitious step in 2018 of opening ‘Anna Couture Brides’, a delightful property opposite The George Hotel on High Street, St. Martins. Barely two years since its arrival on Cheyne Lane, ‘Anna Couture Boutique’ had already become so popular, offering the latest stylish and glamorous ladies wear for all special occasions. Now the time was right to expand the business to become a beautiful design house, where Anna and her team of highlyskilled seamstresses now have room to work their magic. A costume design graduate with a particularly enviable C.V, Anna has years of experience in costume design for both television and film, with anecdotes galore! For instance, she was Madonna’s seamstress for a year during her 2006 “Confessions” tour. Anna explains,“During my time making Madonna’s corsets, I had to sew up a fishnet stocking of hers while she was still wearing it, which was terrifying, (my needle was millimetres from her leg!)” She has produced costumes for blockbuster productions, including “Star Wars” and “The Phantom of the Opera”, and has worked with Gok Wan.

Before taking on the new premises, a number of wedding dresses would have been sold, including some from Chanticleer, a top British bridalwear designer and manufacturer. The opportunity to buy the Chanticleer label proved irresistible for Anna and that prompted the expansion on to the High Street (literally). Anna had previously run her own bridal studios in North London and Gerrards Cross for many years, so her experience is vast. Furthermore, she has the trained expert’s eye to understand a bride’s vision for her wedding dress and then the skill to produce a breathtaking endproduct. The Anna Couture Brides premises contains work rooms and stocks of beautiful fabric, whilst Anna and her team are adept at ensuring that the bride-to-be will enjoy her memorable couture experience, as her dress design takes shape before her very eyes, or a gown is altered to fit perfectly. There can be little doubt that you’ll walk away feeling that your particular needs and wants for that special dress will be satisfied and that your wedding dress will have you feeling like the star of the show!

Why not make this

Latest news from Deep-in Aesthetics’ Julie Higgins: f the past year has taught us anything, it is that you have to make the most of what you have and not take anything for granted. We have all been through the mill and come out of this last and, dare I say final, lockdown, wanting to feel the best we can and to get that boost that we have been missing.

We have all been on those dreaded Zoom calls with friends, family and colleagues, and suddenly seen lines and creases that we never knew existed. Here at Deep-in Aesthetics, we pride ourselves on our professionalism and extremely friendly service. We aim to make every client feel completely at ease so that they feel ready to take the next step in having the treatments without any worry or hesitation. We invite you to come to our new studio, where you will have complete privacy, knowing that

you are in safe hands and have the calmness and serenity here to be able to relax while we make you look the best version of yourself. Alistair, an experienced pharmacist for over twenty-five years and who is fully trained in the aesthetics field, brings his knowledge and experience into the clinic. This is proven, time and again, by the outstanding five-star reviews that we have received both on yell.com and google.

New Salon Offers a Quality, Relaxed and Eco-friendly Experience

A

pril 20th, 2021, and a week after the green light was given for all hairdressing salons to re-open, a completely new venture arrived in the former premises of “The Cutting Room” in Bourne’s Crown Walk. Local partners, and joint owners of McM Hair, Gary McIntosh and Andrew Mannering, took over the premises and, in no time at all, have created a salon, which Gary describes as “a safe and calm space for anyone who wants to unwind, leave behind the stresses of daily life, and leave, feeling like the best version of themselves.”

The “McM” part of their name combines the opening parts of Gary and Andrew’s surnames, whilst it is just Gary who will provide the hairdressing services, following on from their impressive, seamless, on-line booking facility. Almost ten years in the profession, Gary trained and gained valuable experience in a prestigious Peterborough salon, even representing them once as a finalist in a Wella national competition. The salon has been re-furbished with an emphasis on neutral, natural shades for fixtures and fittings, with light wood much in evidence. The relaxing tone created runs through into one whole wall given over to green foliage, whilst the beautiful, dried flowers and grasses arrangements, supplied by Stephanies, effortlessly complete the required effect. McM Hair offers a range of services for both ladies and men, covering everything from a simple cut 8

Bourne

and colour all the way through to extensions and “male grooming packages”, to more advanced services which can help with hair loss. ‘Wella’ and ‘System Professional’ quality products are used and are also offered for sale in the salon. Realising the scarcity on a local (and even national) scale of any outlets catering for hair loss treatments, a “mesh integration” service is now available. Gary explains, “We appreciate that hair loss in any form can be very distressing to experience; with this in mind we have designed a space that can be truly yours, ideal for anyone searching for a semi-permanent hair loss solution.” Gary’s aim is for his salon to provide a totally relaxing experience, bespoke to the individual. This is enhanced by his “one customer in the salon at a time” strategy, along with a “silent appointment” facility, if requested. What’s more, McM Hair is the only Bourne salon open on a Sunday. McM Hair strive to make the salon as environmentally friendly as possible. They utilise water-saving systems to use 50% less water a year compared to a normal salon this size. They use single-use eco towels that are made from 100% recycled paper and naturally break down within eight weeks of use. This not only saves on materials but vastly reduces the amount of water that would otherwise be used on washing. A type of re-usable and compostable paper foil is replacing the traditional aluminium version, huge quantities of which are still being used throughout the industry. JUNE 2021

Stopping Smoking?

M

any people ask me if hypnotherapy can help them give up smoking; well hypnotherapy has the reputation for being the best way to quit smoking. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can help someone who is determined to quit smoking for good by using your imagination to create a non-smoking future which is positive, empowering, and allows you to take control not only of your smoking habits, but of your life.

“Believe you can and you’re almost there!”

Benefits of stopping smoking are amazing – You will: ● have

a decreased chance of having a heart attack after 24 hours of stopping. ● Improve your immune system. ● No longer be burdened by a nasty habit. ● No longer be taking in 4,500 celldestroying chemicals. ● Learn to control cravings. ● Have more energy. ● Learn to control stress. ● Have skin with an improved appearance. ● Feel healthier, with improved breathing and fitness levels. ● Reduce the risk of developing illnesses. ● No longer smell of tobacco smoke. ● Enjoy the taste of food more. ● Feel happier, more confident, and more in control. ● Improve your fertility levels. ● Save money and spend money on things which can improve your quality of life, rather than undermine it. ● No longer endanger those around you with ‘passive smoking’. ● Feel more socially acceptable.

The stop smoking hypnotherapy session works by first explaining why the brain fools us into thinking it is acceptable to smoke. The hypnosis part of the stop smoking treatment is a key stage to cementing the change, during which the client experiences around forty-five minutes of hypnosis. During the hypnosis process, the subconscious mind effectively “rewires” itself to help the person’s willpower and commitment to smoking cessation. The stop smoking hypnotherapy formula works regardless of how many cigarettes you smoke or how long you have been smoking. The treatment is tailored to you as an individual, so you can get the best out of your life. It helps you to realise your full potential, in a relaxed comfortable environment.

“You are greater than your addiction so stop easily...TODAY!” If you would like to book an appointment or find out more about how to quit smoking for good, please contact Christine on: 0780 9690 964 or contact@ beardwoodhypnotherapy.co.uk.

Super Steve Smashes 1,000 Miles in 100 Days to Support Sue Ryder Hospice

A

man from Bourne has recently smashed his target of running and walking 1,000 miles in 100 consecutive days – raising £3,145 for a local hospice. Steve Bills, who works in finance and is Manager of Bourne Town Football Club’s Reserves and Under 18s, was inspired to take on the charity challenge to remember his friend, Paula Turner.

Paula, who was on the committee with Steve at Bourne Town Juniors FC as Club Secretary, had cancer and sadly died in December 2020. Come rain or shine, Steve laced up his trainers and stepped out for 10 miles a day for 100 days to raise funds for Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice in Peterborough. Although Paula wasn’t cared for at the hospice, she had asked that any donations should be given to the charity so it could continue to help others. Steve’s 100-day milestone came and went at the beginning of April – and instead of stopping, he carried on with his challenge, clocking up the miles in and around Bourne. As of April 27th, he had completed an impressive 1,220 miles in 122 days.

close junior football family, as a parent of a player, a main committee colleague and a very dear friend. “The main purpose of my fundraiser is for Paula’s memory to go on and to raise a few pounds for a very worthy cause. I hope the funds raised will help to continue the fantastic support provided by the hospice, especially in these uncertain times. Thank you to my friends and family who have been so very supportive.” Helen Kingston, Community Fundraising Officer at Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice, said, “A huge thank you to Steve, his and Paula’s family and friends, and everyone from Bourne Town Football Club for their unwavering support of our hospice in Paula’s memory. We are blown away by Steve’s epic efforts. The funds he has raised will help us to continue offering our compassionate palliative care and bereavement support, and being there when it matters for other local families.

Steve explained, “Paula touched the hearts of many with her positive, friendly and selfless attitude to life. Over the last couple of years, her courageous battle against Steve is raising funds in memory of cancer was an inspiration to us all. I knew Paula as part of a very his friend Paula Turner (pictured). 14

any of us have found ourselves walking more during the lockdown and, better still, have decided to keep up the habit. The supposed health benefits of consistent walks are well-documented; whether that’s more energy, sustaining muscle and bone strength, or even a greater sense of inner calm. Yet, despite this, if you haven’t got the right footwear, you may actually impede your progress “in the long run”!

Give Your Feet a Treat at Tallington Lakes Pro Shop!

We’ve all come to realise that the right footwear seems all the more important with the more you walk and, depending on the kind of walking you’re participating in, your choice of footwear can really affect your feet. So, any investment in the right shoe is definitely well worth it, whilst your “future-you” will thank you later! The team at Tallington Lakes Pro Shop can provide you with the answer to what style of shoe will truly fulfil your needs with their Boot Fitting Service. Since they reopened on April 12th, you can now come in store to chat with their friendly staff about taking the next steps in kitting your feet out correctly. It’s all too easy to make a purchase from the comfort of your home, but now that you can come to store, it’s best to try before you buy. The endless selection available online can also be daunting so, at Tallington Lakes Pro Shop, they have hand-picked the best for all ranges of

abilities and environments. If you’ve found yourself more comfortable running over differing terrain, a trail running shoe may be more suitable. If you keep to longer hikes, a boot would be ideal. Coming to store allows you to find your preference and style; while the Pro Shop’s staff can help you find the best fit for your feet and ankles. No matter what you choose, just remember to give yourself plenty of time to break them in, or your feet may pay the price! So, if you’ve “found your feet” over lockdown and are now scratching your head on whether leather or fabric footwear would be best, or if you’re weighing up breathability versus waterproofing, or simply don’t know where to even begin, then Tallington Lakes Pro Shop may be just the place for you. Tallington Lakes Pro Shop is open seven days a week, between 9.00am-6.00pm; call 01778 347000 for more information.

Public Hanging in Dyke! to Commemorate Sixty Years of the W.I. in the Village

M

embers of Dyke Women’s Institute defied forty-milesper-hour winds and rain recently to gather safely at Dyke Village Hall to view their sixtieth birthday wall-hanging, finally in pride of place in Dyke Village Hall. They were determined that the event would not be cancelled, as it had been before, due to Covid restrictions. The wall-hanging project was conceived some three years ago to celebrate the sixtieth anniversary of the foundation of the WI in Dyke village. Led by a hard-working and dedicated ‘Craft Group’ team, many members created individual panels through different media of embroidery, applique, knitting and paint, to represent village and WI life and activities. The wall-hanging was framed by Black Cat Framing of Market Deeping, a specialist in textile framing, and the costs were paid for by grants from the Len Pick Trust and Bourne Town Council. The event was attended by Clerk to Bourne Town Council, Ian Sismey, and Adrian Smith of the Len Pick Trust. WI members were also delighted to meet their new Lincolnshire South Federation of Women’s Institute’s President, Liz McIntosh. Committee members served cake in wild weather and members brought their own drinks and chairs. Viewings

of the wall-hanging were allowed, with a group at a time passing through the Village Hall. As usual, Dyke WI members were undeterred by the weather and thoroughly enjoyed their afternoon. Thanks go to the Len Pick Trust and The Bourne Town Council V.E. Day Fund and to the Dyke WI Craft Group team for all of their hard work.

Dimension Skatepark Update 2021

Dimension Skatepark Trustees are feeling positive about the fruition of a skatepark for Bourne. This is mostly due to recent negotiations with different establishments and the ongoing support from the local community.

S

kateboarding has been approved as an Olympic sport and will feature in the next Olympic Games, whether that be Tokyo or the next one. Great Britain has a chance of a medal too with the amazing young talent of 12-year-old Sky Brown. It would be fabulous to think that a skatepark in Bourne could inspire another young athlete to great things!

amended version.

However, we have recently been notified of a deadline from a major donor. Sport England has told us that their £100,000 grant will be withdrawn if all of the funds for the project are not in place by October 1st. Our supporters have raised £183,000 towards the total cost but we remain hopeful we can bridge the £144,000 gap. The new deadline has prompted an increased effort with new grant applications being sent out and negotiations with bodies that might be able to provide help, being sought.

Dimension Skatepark will be a facility for all users of multi-wheeled equipment and all of them will reap the benefits promoted by Skateboard England. This has always been the case but in the situation that we now find ourselves, hopefully post-pandemic, it will be particularly true. The time and need to provide this has never been greater!

If we are unable to close the current funding gap, plans will have to be scaled down to reduce the overall costs. Once we know how much money we have secured, the design can be altered accordingly. Ideally, we would prefer to retain the original project design, which was created with the help of the youth of Bourne, rather than an 20

Bourne

The idea has received backing from Grantham and Stamford MP, Gareth Davies, South Kesteven District Council, Bourne United Charities Trustees and Bourne Town Council. Greater Peterborough University Technical College Now Accepting Applications for Year 7 Students

T

he Greater Peterborough UTC (GPUTC) are now accepting applications for Year 7 students wishing to start in September 2021. They recently announced that, “Working alongside our new academic partners, the Cambridge Meridian Academies Trust (CMAT), we are finally able to share this outstanding news.” This means current Year 6 students with a passion for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) will now be able to join the school at an even earlier age, and the GPUTC will be able to deliver their specialist curriculum to even more of

Peterborough’s budding young scientists, architects, designers and mathematicians. A first for the wider Peterborough area, the GPUTC boasts of pioneering “Expeditionary Learning” which engages students in learning across multiple subjects. Through this scheme of learning, students complete in-depth research of authentic topics through a series of expeditions designed to enhance students’ knowledge and develop their research and critical thinking skills. Because the GPUTC has close ties with numerous sponsors in various fields of STEM, students who choose to join this institution will have

experts at hand to support their learning. Intake spaces will be limited to only sixty students. Principal, Mr David Bisley, explained that this is so that, “We can ensure that high quality academic rigour is delivered, alongside unrivalled care, support and guidance from our dedicated Year 7 team of teachers and support staff.” Besides this recent addition, the GPUTC are still taking applications for Year 9 and for their Sixth Form too. Application forms can be accessed on the GPUTC website: www.gputc.com and sent to admissions@peterborough.gov.uk.

For further information and/or arrange a private COVID-safe visit, please contact either the GPUTC Year 7 Transition Manager at headofyear7@gputc.com or the GPUTC admissions team at applications@gputc.com.

Still Life

t. 01778 392777

A Song for the Dark Times

BY SARAH WINMAN From the author of “When God was a Rabbit” and “Tin Man”, “Still Life” is a big-hearted story of people brought together by love, war, art and the ghost of E.M. Forster.

BY IAN RANKIN

1944, in the ruined wine cellar of a Tuscan villa, as bombs fall around them, two strangers meet and share an extraordinary evening. Ulysses Temper is a young British soldier, Evelyn Skinner is a sexagenarian art historian and possible spy. She has come to Italy to salvage paintings from the wreckage and relive memories of the time she encountered EM Forster and had her heart stolen by an Italian maid in a particular Florentine ‘room with a view’. Moving from the Tuscan Hills and piazzas of Florence, to the smog of London’s East End, “Still Life” is a sweeping, joyful novel about beauty, love, family and fate.

From the iconic, number one bestseller, Ian Rankin, comes one of the must-read books of the year. When his daughter, Samantha, calls in the dead of night, John Rebus knows it’s not good news. Her husband has been missing for two days. Rebus fears the worst - and knows from his lifetime in the police that his daughter will be the prime suspect. He wasn’t the best father - the job always came first - but now his daughter needs him more than ever. Out now in paperback.

UEFA EURO 2020 Handbook As the football fever grows in the run-up to the biggest UEFA European Football Championship ever, young football fans have the opportunity to follow the action closely with the UEFA EURO 2020 Handbook. This fun-packed compendium delivers a wealth of football information in a compact and colourful format. Combining its winning mix of facts and figures with on-the-page puzzles and quizzes, this unique book is guaranteed to appeal to young football fans who want to be entertained while also becoming experts in the tournament.

Tornado

BY JOHN NICHOL

Former Tornado aircraft navigator, John Nichol, tells the incredible story of the RAF Tornado force during the First Gulf War in 1991, a story of the aircrew at the heart of Operation Desert Storm, almost none of whom had any prior experience of armed combat. It is the story of the Tornado’s missions, of those 22

Will & Probate Services

2021: The Year to Protect You and Your Family.

ADVICE FROM NICK ASH, MANAGING DIRECTOR WILL AND PROBATE SERVICES

Having THE Conversation

W

hen you are planning for later life and ultimately death, there is nothing more important than communication. Three things that have happened in the last month convinced me that the best thing I could do with this page this month is to encourage you all to have a conversation with your family. The first thing was the Duke of Edinburgh died; it was sad but not unexpected as he was 99 years old. The BBC went into overdrive, a “Tier-One death” meant that all programming across all of the networks was pulled and the nation was plunged into a period of official mourning. I didn’t watch much of the coverage myself, but what I did watch had a recurring theme – The Duke had planned his funeral down to the last detail and had communicated it to his family, his staff and everyone who would have a hand in the day. Because he was so detailed, the day was exactly what he wanted, although the Queen did look very lonely at the funeral. The next thing had far less international significance but was one of those moments that really make you stop in your tracks and think. A friend of my wife who was diagnosed with a brain tumour a couple of months ago put a post on Facebook. The headline was “Booking a plot at my Green Burial Site” and there was a photo of her with her husband and daughters at the cemetery where

she was going to be buried with the tagline “not a normal family outing”. A real example of communication in the face of huge adversity, most people would bury their heads in the sand. Not my wife’s friend though; she has become the Duke of Edinburgh, taking control of her life and her death. I find her attitude humbling. The last thing is less positive. A client of mine died a few weeks ago and my firm is dealing with her estate, getting probate and disposing of her assets. The day after her funeral, I had a phone call from someone who I had never met or spoken to. He said to me, “I am your client’s godson and, shortly before she died, my godmother said I could have …” He then went on to reel off a list of possessions that he wanted from his godmother’s house. I had to advise him that most of his wish list had been gifted to other people in her will and that, as he was not a beneficiary of the will, he couldn’t have anything. I don’t know whether or not his ‘conversation’ happened, but I have my suspicions, but because it wasn’t recorded and her wishes said something else, the godson got nothing. It is not the first time this has happened, not even the first time this year. It is a regular feature of what we deal with when administering estates. So, have the conversation; be like my wife’s friend and the Duke of Edinburgh. When you have had the conversation, record it – we can help with that bit. If you need any help and advice, please call us on 01778 252301.

Tallington Lodge remember Rachel’s award-winning Tea Room

A

s part of “Local History Month”, residents at Tallington Lodge Care Home, near Stamford, have been sharing some fascinating stories about their lifetime achievements and places where they grew up. Learning about residents’ lives helps staff to get to know them better, thereby enabling more personalised care and support. Tallington Lodge Care Home resident, ninety-nineyear-old Rachel Carrington, ran a successful tea room in Over Haddon, near Bakewell, Derbyshire. When she moved from Bakewell to the small hamlet on the edges of Lathkill Dale, in the late 1960s, Rachel realised there was an opportunity to cater for the many hungry and thirsty walkers who made their way up the hill from the dale below. In the summer of 1977, the ‘Lathkill Cottage Tea Rooms’ was born, and the Carrington family dining room was commandeered. Six months after opening, Rachel and partner Audrey entered the ‘Make Teatime Special’ Lyons Tetley competition with cash prizes and a stay, with afternoon tea, at the Selfridge Hotel in London.

26

Bourne

“I remember the judge came at 5 pm, right at the end of service,” said Rachel. “They had a full cream tea; they must have liked it because we won the regional competition.” Within a few weeks, they learnt they had won the third prize in the national competition, with the accolade: “Highly recommended, idyllic rural situation; food all freshly made; good atmosphere”. Inspired by Rachel’s story, staff at Tallington Lodge re-created the Lathkill Cottage Tea Rooms in the café at the Care Home. Led by Rachel, residents spent the morning baking scones and discussing their favourite cake recipes. In the afternoon, they enjoyed a full afternoon tea served on a vintage tea set, complete with lemon drizzle cake and chocolate brownies that Rachel was famous for. Outdoor Learning at Thurlby Academy

T

he summer term has already seen the children at Thurlby Community Primary Academy participate in a range of wonderful, outdoor learning opportunities in their idyllic grounds. New equipment in the EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage) area has allowed the Reception children to have fun whilst learning outside. The children can experience a wide range of activities, such as building cars and tractors, but have most recently been making potions, using natural resources in their tough spots.

In Years 2 and 3, the children have been botanists and have spent time investigating what plants need to grow. The children have been carefully studying, measuring and sketching the plants around school and identifying the different trees by looking closely at the shapes and patterns of the leaves. The pupils in Year 4 have been enjoying Forest School sessions that link their learning in the classroom to the outdoors. The children used twigs, branches and logs to create The Five Pillars of Islam. They were set a challenge for all pillars to be secured in the ground as well as being the same height. This encouraged great teamwork and problem-solving skills. All

Finally, the children in Year 6 have been taking a special interest in developing their gardening skills to help improve the outdoor areas of the school. They have donned their gloves, weeded, and bedded lots of new plants in hanging baskets and planters and are excited to see them in bloom! If you would like more information about joining Thurlby Academy, who have places available in some year groups, then please e-mail enquiries@thurlby.lincs.sch.uk.

Remembering and Celebrating the BRM

Seventy years ago, Bourne’s famous Formula One motor racing car, the BRM, entered its first World Championship, finishing in fifth and seventh place at the British Grand Prix at Silverstone. By 1962, the team had become world champions, followed by the next three years as runners-up – glorious days indeed! To celebrate one of Bourne’s most famous connections, The BRM Commemorative Project is due to be completed sometime in June (weather permitting!) “Discovering Bourne” will be delighted to share with our readers details of this innovative project when it is completed. All parties involved are looking forward to making this tribute a welcome addition to the street scene. 28

groups succeeded after attempting it in various ways! When learning about Ramadan and how it is determined by the phases of the moon, the children made the crescent and waning moon, using foraged materials. Individually, the children moulded a ball of clay into the shape of a hand and engraved a henna design – this practice is part of the celebrations at the end of Ramadan.

Vote for the Winner of a School Shade Sail

We have received a request to urge our readers to vote for Langtoft Primary School in a national competition where the school receiving the most votes will become the proud recipients of a 4m x 4m shade sail. These are large, fabric canopies that attach to posts or anchor points on existing buildings and are then stretched between them to create a shaded and protected area, under which pupils can play outside, and even have ‘al fresco’ lessons, more regularly. Please visit the following website and cast your vote, but be quick, the deadline is May 31st, 2021: www.aandslandscape.co.uk/ competition-page JUNE 2021

JUNE GARDENING TIPS

arden pests and weeds are the main bugbear of the vegetable gardener and keeping on top of weeds is so important for the health of your crops. To keep the weeds at bay, hoe regularly, even if you can’t see any obvious sign of weeds, spread mulches, or use lightproof membrane- this will also prevent moisture loss in dry weather.

Property News

Bourne Property Market

T

BY JASON TREADWELL, MANAGING DIRECTOR he Bourne property market has been extremely busy this year. At the time of writing, 66% of properties marketed “for sale” are “sold subject to contract”, whilst 88% of properties marketed “to let” are “let agreed”.

Clearly, the demand is truly outweighing the supply, but why? ● The

traditional reasons for moving – people will always have the need to upsize, downsize or simply need to relocate, therefore there will always be a demand for property.

Change in lifestyle – with more people than ever before now able to work from home, we have seen a huge demand from buyers looking to move to the Bourne area, given the value for money and lifestyle that our area offers.

The tapered Stamp Duty holiday – with buyers able to make savings of thousands of pounds, many people have decided to buy ahead of schedule to capitalise on this.

How does the tapered Stamp Duty holiday work? Originally, the end of March was the deadline for the initial Stamp Duty holiday, which was extended to later in the year. Whilst many people now believe that this deadline is the end of June, this is not strictly the case. Should your property purchase be completed before the end of June, the maximum saving will be made. Currently, before the end of June, no

Stamp Duty is payable up to £500,000, should the property not be purchased as a second home. However, between July to the end of September, no Stamp Duty is payable up to £250,000 for a property purchase (that isn’t being purchased as a second home). Normally, Stamp Duty is payable from £125,000, therefore savings can still be made until the end of September, albeit the end of June deadline does provide the maximum saving.

The impacts the busy market has had: ● An

increase of up to 10% in property prices so far in 2021.

● Quick

sales - many properties are selling before they even hit the online portals.

● Some

properties selling in excess of their asking prices.

Our advice to homesellers and buyers: ● Ensure

your details are registered with agents so that they can inform you about new properties coming to the market first.

● Should

I put my home on the market or wait to find somewhere first? Put yourself in the best position possible, by going on the market and securing a buyer.

● Remain

sensible with your asking price – if the price is right, a buyer will be secured quickly in such a buoyant market. Furthermore, more than one buyer may be found, generating a sale price in excess of your asking price anyway.

To ensure your details are registered with our team, please give us a call on 01778 422567.

M

ay 2006 saw local lady, Joanne Dolby, make the decision to establish her own business, Joanne’s Bookwork Services, after having spent over twelve years in office managerial roles locally, where she was able to gain experience in keeping accurate records for both taxation and VAT purposes. Over fifteen years have now passed, and Joanne looks back proudly on this time of having created for her firm an enviable reputation, far and wide. From her office in Dyke, north of Bourne, Joanne has been serving mainly the areas of Bourne, Market Deeping, Stamford, Spalding, Sleaford, Grantham, Peterborough and Lincoln, but she has also clients further afield in Herefordshire, Somerset, Dorset and Surrey. Joanne uses her wealth of experience to provide a high quality, professional and effective service to her clients. Joanne’s Bookwork Services provides a full range of bookkeeping services tailored to suit the specific business needs, in a variety of industries, and all very competitively priced. Joanne has in-depth knowledge of Sage/Xero/ Quickbooks/Quickfile and Excel. She can help you with your Accounts, Payroll, CIS, VAT/VAT MTD and SelfAssessment.

40

As she explains, “Good bookkeeping practices benefit your business by helping you manage and control your finances, plan for future growth and ensure that your accounts are completed more efficiently. Outsourcing your bookkeeping can give you more time to focus on adding value to your business.” Joanne’s simple four-point approach, in her own words, is:

THE OVEN CHARMER A Professional and Community-Spirited Business

D

Do you ever think that the time you spend cleaning your kitchen oven could be put to a more enjoyable and useful activity?

o you think firms should all be as eco-friendly as possible? Would you be impressed by a firm who profess to being passionate about local charities and who even donate some of their time and profits to them? If you have answered, “Yes, absolutely!” to these questions, then now is time for you to get in touch with Dan Thompson, founder of The Oven Charmer business. Since establishing his professional oven cleaning business in 2019, local man, Dan Thompson, has been building up a solid base of over eight-hundred regular customers who have their oven cleaned every six to twelve months. There is currently a four to six week waiting time for Dan and his van to pull on to your drive, so business is certainly brisk enough for Dan to be planning on adding an additional cleaner to cope with the demand for his excellent service.

All types of ovens, ranges, AGAs, hobs, extractors (including changing the filters) and microwaves are on Dan’s “hit-list”, besides offering replacement bulbs for ovens, heavy duty oven liners and the fixing of any faults. A wide area of South Lincolnshire as far afield as Lincoln and Boston is covered, as well as Peterborough and other parts of North Cambridgeshire. The Oven Charmer business is passionate about getting involved with local charities and are proud to support good causes like the ‘Don’t Lose Hope’ charity, based in Bourne.

The Oven Charmer provides professional oven cleaning that is eco-friendly and totally causticsoda free! All cleaning products are safe and not harmful to pets or children, and the oven can be used straight after the clean. You’ll get none of those nasty fumes or smells like you get with most DIY oven-cleaning products! 42

A single oven clean usually takes an hour, whilst the “range” type would be more likely two hours long. This is no surprise when considering how thorough the process will be: fully dismantling the oven, taking all removable parts to soak in a specially designed dip tank in the back of the van, and then re-assembling it.

Bourne

They are always happy to support the local community, recently donating £10 per oven clean for an entire week and raising a total of £220 for local charities. They have also donated free oven cleans to people in the community who are themselves doing wonderful things for charities in the local area of Bourne and Spalding. JUNE 2021

Mortgage approvals remain over 20% higher than the long term (5-year average), as interest in moving home continues. The UK base rate has now remained at 0.1% for over a year. With inflation remaining significantly below target and the economy still in recovery there is little evidence this will change imminently.

Employment Advice from Odin HR Consultancy Can an employer require staff to have a Covid-19 vaccination?

E

mployers have a duty to ensure, as far as reasonably practicable, the health and safety at work of their employees. Asking employees to agree to take up their vaccination against Covid-19 may be a reasonable step to take to reduce the risk to employees’ health.

At present, however, if an employee refuses to be vaccinated, employers are limited in what they can do. Justifying disciplinary action or the dismissal of an employee on health and safety grounds for refusing the vaccine may not be straightforward.

Although not an employment law case and not relating to Covid-19, in ‘Vavřička and others v Czech Republic’, the ECtHR found that the Czech Republic’s statutory requirement for children to be vaccinated against nine diseases was “legitimate and proportionate”.

What can employers do right now? Talking to staff about the vaccine, allaying concerns and sharing the regular updates on its benefits may encourage uptake. ACAS suggests that employers might also consider:

There are also other legal hurdles to overcome. Requiring employees to be vaccinated exposes the employer to the risk of potential discrimination claims under the Equality Act 2010, including:

• paid time off for vaccination appointments; • paying staff their usual rate of pay if they’re off sick with vaccine side effects, instead of only Statutory Sick Pay (SSP);

• Disability: employees with certain health conditions may be unable to have the vaccine e.g. those with certain allergies;

• not counting vaccine-related absences in absence records or towards any absence ‘trigger’ system.

• Religion and/or belief: those of certain religious or other beliefs could refuse vaccines that use any animal products.

Employers with trade unions or staff forums may be able to agree an appropriate vaccine policy. However, where an employee does not want to be vaccinated, the employer should listen to their concerns; be sensitive towards personal situations; and maintain the individual’s confidentiality.

Legal challenges on Human Rights grounds are also likely.

And finally:

Have there been any legal developments in this area? The UK Government currently maintains its stance that it will not make Covid-19 vaccinations mandatory. But a recent decision in the European Court of Human Rights (“ECtHR”) has sparked the interest of some legal professionals by suggesting that vaccination policies may be legally justifiable.

This is a dynamic situation. As we continue to live with the Covid-19 pandemic, with its threat of variants and winter surges, and as more knowledge of the effectiveness of the vaccination programme emerges, it is quite possible that guidance will change, and more case law will be established. In the meantime, employers looking to implement a mandatory vaccination policy in the workplace should seek legal advice.

A Local Feel Yet a National Strength t is fifteen years now since Winkworths was established on West Street in Bourne, although this estate agency had first appeared in London in 1835, operating from an office in Mayfair. Since then, they have spread their influence far and wide, with ninety-five offices across the country. It is this nationwide coverage and strong links to their offices in the capital that can be seen as one of their many strengths, particularly in the present climate.

The exodus from the South-East has continued for many years, as families seek a better lifestyle in areas such as ours yet retaining an efficient travel connection with their former location. Winkworth’s London offices have long provided their potential buyers with the links to dream accommodation in our area. It has been down to the crucial expertise of Bourne’s team, their first-hand knowledge of

their area, a sound grasp of the prevailing market conditions, and their very determined approach, for those moves to proceed and the dream become a reality. This is not to say, however, that the South-East is the Bourne office’s sole concern. The Bourne team are all immersed in the local community and fully appreciate the benefits that are to be gained from clients moving within their local area, and not just arriving from elsewhere. The marketing of a property is obviously of paramount importance and Winkworth’s insistence on quality professional photography gives them every advantage in ensuring a successful outcome. At a time like the present, with market conditions considered excellent and a phenomenal time to buy property, why not let Winkworth’s help you make your own dream move?

Meet the Team!

With over twenty-six years’ experience in estate agency, previously in Surrey and Sussex, Adam has seen the whole gamut of market conditions, from buoyant sellers’ markets to difficult buyers’ markets. This experience and his determination to achieve the best outcomes for his many clients over the years has proven to be invaluable.

career in the property industry five years ago, mainly within the lettings sector, but her move to join Winkworths in 2017 saw her take on more of a sales role, in which she has since excelled. Dedicated, first-class customer service and a wide knowledge of the local area has meant that Millie can combine her love of the great outdoors and riding her horse, Ellie, with a successful contribution to the fortunes of Winkworths.

The third, and most recent, member of the Bourne team is Charlette Hallam, who joined, as an apprentice, in 2019 and has since progressed to become a fully trained sales negotiator within a year. Local to this area, Charlette enjoys travelling and Yoga, hoping too that, one day, her fluency in German might prove crucial in securing yet another sale for this determined lady!

Your Finances

Financial Planning... The Liberty Difference

A

BY MATTHEW BIGGS – FINANCIAL PLANNER

new client is someone who typically has been introduced to us by an existing client and they have a need to talk to someone about a financial matter, such as their pension or how they can create an investment. We sometimes call this ‘the messy part’, anxiety levels may be riding high and confidence levels sometimes low; it can all appear to be quite daunting! Quickly, they will settle in, and it is the same as any new relationship where we get to know each other, and naturally confidence levels grow, and anxiety subsides. Immediately, the conversation will be broadened out into sometimes seemingly unrelated matters. We will be thorough and clear with you and if you do not understand these, often complex, matters then we will be patient, recap and explain again in terms that you understand. A pension or investment is simply a vehicle to enable you to plan in a particular way; they tell

us little though about your hopes and dreams, your family life, health circumstances and objectives for the future. This to us is all critical in our role as financial planners; we have to get to know you and to understand you in order to help build a plan for your future. We are confident that you will enjoy the process and that you will find it rewarding. We will get quickly through the messy part and we will work with you over the long-term to help keep your plan on track. You will be given all the support you need, and you will understand all that we will do for you…. Yes, we promise you will understand it all, even the complicated bits! So, take a moment to reflect on your own finances: What are your priorities? What direction are they heading in? If you are still not sure, then perhaps it is time to start creating your own financial plan, and we are certain we can help! Creating a Lawn to Love with Green Thumb

W

ith warmer, longer days now with us, the beautiful bright colours of your garden are best enjoyed alongside a lush, green lawn. As the centrepiece of your garden, GreenThumb Lawn Treatment Service will ensure your lawn reaches its full potential as a weed-free, healthy, and well-loved lawn.

● We recommend a regular mowing regime, preferably on dry, sunny days, ensuring your mower blades are kept sharp to avoid causing damage to the grass plant. Cutting grass too short will weaken it, attracting unwanted weeds. When dry, raise the height of your cut from one inch up to two inches and give it a good drink the day after mowing. ● Keep your lawn healthy and strong in preparation for the rising temperatures, increased humidity, and reduced rainfall; this is where NutraGreen ‘Summer Ready’ Treatment can

help. Applied between April and June, it features a fully coated fertiliser designed to give your lawn a timed release on nutrition over several months, feeding your grass, stimulating growth and including weed control. ● The ‘Summer Ready’ Treatment includes an application of the water conserver, Oasis, an innovative, highly concentrated seaweed extract which provides better colour, stronger roots and much less need for watering. Let’s create for you the lawn we all love! Contact your Bourne GreenThumb branch today on 01778 426730 or e-mail bourne@greenthumb.co.uk.

Mortgage Advice

Re-mortgaging - Why Now Might be the Right Time for You ADVICE FROM LUCA PALUMBO, MORTGAGE & PROTECTION CONSULTANT

I

n the economic climate we find ourselves in, many homeowners may be unsure about when is the right time to look for a new mortgage. It is a particularly important decision that could impact your finances by thousands of pounds every year.

Re-mortgaging is the process of getting a new mortgage on your existing property, either with your current or a new lender. The main reason to remortgage is to save yourself some money, but there may be other reasons too.

But before we look at the ‘when?’ you need to first consider the ‘why?’ • Is your current deal about to come to an end or has it already finished, and you have been moved to your lender’s costly standard variable rate (SVR)? •

Or are you simply looking to save money?

• Or do you want to release some of the equity in your home to make changes to it, such as renovations or adding an extension? • Or do you want to switch from an interest-only to a repayment mortgage? Whatever your reason for wanting to re-mortgage, it is important to obtain professional advice to see if re-mortgaging is the best option for you and to help you identify the best mortgage deal to meet your needs. There is no right answer for everyone, but here are three reasons why mortgaging now could save you money or make you money, over the long-term.

1. “I’m nearing the end of my promotional period.”

You have a fixed or tracker mortgage and you are coming close to the end of the initial promotional period (often two, three or five years). If you do not find a new deal, you will automatically revert to your lender’s SVR when your promotional period ends. This would mean higher monthly payments.

2. “I want to re-mortgage while property prices are rising.” Property prices have been rising in recent months despite the Covid-19 pandemic, and that can mean it is a good time to re-mortgage. Why? Because your loan-to-value ratio will be lower. In other words, the amount you need to borrow will be a smaller percentage of the market value of your home.

3. “I want to raise capital.” In some situations, you might want to borrow more against your home. For example, you might want to build an extension or carry out home improvements that will increase the value of your home. Alternatively, you might want to start investing in other property, or buy a second property as a “buyto-let”. Re-mortgaging could help you to raise the capital to do this.

*Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage*

place a ladder safely. This means that not only is there less risk of falling off a ladder, there is less risk to your property too. Sam adds: “For your full peace of mind, we use a CCTV system that enables us to show you before and after photographs of the work we have completed for you. If your gutters are clear, then there is no call out charge. All our jobs are booked in for a timed appointment, so you know we are coming.” GutterPRO can also provide a gutter washing service which removes black marks and dirt from UPVC gutters and fascia boards, giving homes a fresh new look and much improved kerbside appeal. Sam continues: “We are seeing people getting a clear and clean before putting their properties on the market. People don’t want to see grass growing from gutters, or dirty gutters on estate agents’ photos.”

utter health is an often-overlooked part of your home maintenance plan, but gutters perform an important function in protecting your home.

Axa, the world leading insurance company, suggest that gutters require at least an internal inspection each year, and clearing out if they are clogged up. Blocked gutters can lead to brick damage, wood rot and even damp on internal walls of your home.

Local GutterPRO expert Sam says: “Contrary to popular belief, moss not leaves are the major cause of gutter blockages. So even if your property doesn’t have trees in the immediate area there may still be a problem building up. Moss does a great job of falling from your roof when it rains and then swelling up in your guttering. The moss breaks down and provides a great medium for weeds and grass to germinate which will prevent water running freely to the drains.” GutterPRO are able to clear gutters from the ground using a powerful vacuum system and super-light carbon poles. One of My Biggest ‘Growing Pains’ for the Business is Finding the Right People.

W

henever we have recruited new team members, we are extremely careful about finding the right people that fit into our team. As an employer, I work very hard to try and build a positive work environment; finding people with the right mindset is a huge part of that.

Come and join our fantastic team!

We have been very restricted this year, but we like to have ‘team building days’, where we may go and carry out some physical activities such as tobogganing, or raft building, or something mentally challenging, such as ‘the escape rooms.’ We have not been able to do much this year unfortunately, but we have our first activity since before lockdown booked in at the end of May.

husband and I often take our young children in the office with us. I believe that this is one of the key reasons for having this friendly, family atmosphere. We are welcoming our new Operations Manager, John, into the company this week, and we are very much looking forward to working with him and his extensive experience that will be able to help us to perfect our performance as a company and achieve more than ever before.

Job Opportunity We are looking to expand our team, so if you are, or somebody you know is, a qualified electrician, or would like to train to be an electrician, then the best way to apply is to send a CV and covering letter to Recruit@AltoElectrical.co.uk to be considered for a future with us.

I am very proud of the Alto team; they are genuine, kind, competent and professional. I know, like, and trust each and every team member. I would actually have no problem leaving them in charge of the baby if it was ever necessary, and any new mum will understand how much that means! Everyone at Alto is hard-working and has a positive outlook and a good sense of humour. We have a mutual understanding of trust and respect, something that is so important for any healthy workplace. We are family-oriented, and my

ast month, we included a “heart-felt” plea from Alto Electrical’s Coleen Everitt, entitled, “More Defibrillators for our Area – Can You Help?” In that feature, it was stated that one of the driving forces behind the Nassington initiative, Russell Hamilton, was “an ex-paramedic, with a doctor for a wife”.

B. T. BLINDS ARE A FAMILY BUSINESS WHO SUPPLY IN ALL TYPES OF BLINDS

Mr Hamilton wishes to put the record straight, writing, “I feel it important to correct this as I wouldn’t want anyone to be misled. I am not a clinician, nor do I have any clinical training. I do however have extensive experience of working at a senior level in many parts of the NHS until I retired early. I am extremely proud of all of my public service including the part that was as an Ambulance Service Chief Executive. People in such roles do not have to be clinicians although they might, they are employed for their broader leadership qualities.

Legal Corner

VULNERABILITY IN OLDER AGE WORDS FROM RICHARD WOOD

We are all getting older … which of course is better than the alternative! Even today, many people do not make wills which leaves them at the mercy of the law of intestacy. So, if we want to be sure to leave our estate to our chosen family or friends, we should always make a will. Keeping a will updated is advised as well, otherwise we may not be using all reliefs and allowances that are available. Seeing a solicitor ensures that the correct clauses are utilised, and costs are kept down, and what’s more, the legal profession is regulated and insured. Another issue arising is that of mobility or capacity. We can protect ourselves by making a Lasting Power of Attorney, either just for ‘Finance and Property’ or also for ‘Health and Welfare’. We must always consider carefully who we

should appoint as ‘Attorney’ because we are entrusting the persons concerned with power to spend our money or sell our home. We might also be giving them power to make “life and death decisions” for us. Trust is absolutely vital. If we need someone to assist us but have not created a Power of Attorney, our loved ones would have to apply to be appointed a ‘Deputy’ (receiver). The good side of this is that The Court of Protection will check the annual accounts filed. The bad side is that the forms are more difficult to complete, and the fees are worse. Where a loved one has died, the government intend to raise probate fees in the near future, so anyone who is dealing with an estate should ensure that they are progressing their case. The advice of a solicitor can protect and guide clients in such cases.

Morton Hosts Lincolnshire County Show June 21st - 23rd 1939!

I

n recent years, the annual Lincolnshire Show has been held on the twohundred-acre showground, north of Lincoln, on land owned by the Lincolnshire Agricultural Society, which was formed in 1869. It has not always been the venue for the Show, however.

It continues, “All was not gloom and doom at this Show though there had been very heavy rain, sunshine and a drying wind made things more pleasant for the second day. The grounds were considered the best for many years. The Duke of Kent visited the Show and was entertained in the Stewards Pavilion before watching the In 1939, just a few months before parade in the main ring. It reported, “Throughout its long history, the County Show has been held at various times in national and international crisis. But none can compare with the 1939 event when both the clouds of rain and the clouds of warfare were darkening the skies”.

The local newspaper, The Lincoln, Rutland and Stamford Mercury, understandably devoted several pages to this historic event, with its banner headline of Friday June 23rd proclaiming “Duke of Kent Honours Lincolnshire Show With His Presence”. Again, the heavy rain had been an obstacle to overcome and, by all accounts, the record entries in some livestock sections and the wide range of exhibitions enjoyed by the masses of visitors, were soon to take away the worries presented by our typical summer weather!

A nearby town came in for some welcome praise! “Bourne, the smallest town which the (Lincolnshire Agricultural) Society has yet visited, had spared no effort to ensure the success of the Show,” declared the Mercury. “The town had been gaily decorated with floral baskets on the lamp-posts, tubs of flowers along the streets, flags and banners, and special flood-lighting effects were provided along the river-side.”

Triaditis - “three in one”

I

f you enjoy the Garfield cartoons, you realise just how much cats and dogs differ: they eat in different ways; they have vastly different behaviours in the wild and that maxim also holds true for their diseases and treatment too.

One of those diseases is triaditis, a condition that only affects cats, not dogs. It is a condition where there are three simultaneous diseases – pancreatitis; inflammatory bowel disease; inflammation of the gallbladder and duct. We are not sure why this condition occurs, but it is thought that initial gastrointestinal disease causes inflammation within the bowel and this spreads to the nearby associated organs. The ducts of the pancreas and the gall bladder empty into the small intestine at the same site so they both have a higher chance of being inflamed when the bowel is diseased. The most common sign of triaditis in your pet cat is loss of appetite. Even if you offer them the tastiest morsel, they just turn their noses up at it. This is due to nausea, where the site and smell of food is very off-putting. We’ve all experienced that when we’re ill and can certainly sympathise with our cats. Some cats will vomit and there may be weight loss and a fever too. There may even be a touch of yellowing of the whites of the eyes if they have a slight touch of jaundice. There is usually pain in the

JUNE 2021

abdomen, but cats are very good at hiding even extreme discomfort and it is through a change in behaviour that we realise how sore they actually are. Most cats will want to be left alone and hide in a cosy, quiet corner of the house. Wise Words By Because it is a combination of Deirdre Wilson three diseases, diagnosis may need several tests including blood tests, ultrasound and even biopsies in chronic cases. Triaditis is a complex disease, and all three elements need to be treated and managed together. This usually involves a combination of antibiotics, pain relief and anti-emetics to control the nausea. Sometimes a cat which refuses to eat will need hospitalization for fluid therapy and may need the placement of feeding tubes as well. There may also be more unusual complications underlying the problem such as abscesses within the abdomen or even gall stones and these will need investigation also. Thankfully, most cats are tough and respond to treatment well, but if your pet is not eating and feeling rough, don’t delay getting help, as faster treatment means better recovery.

This year, the children at Morton took part in a diverse range of investigations and activities in their classrooms, including designing and making bridges, planting seeds and watching them grow, and learning about what makes the perfect paper boat.

As we move towards the summer, we look forward to hosting a teddy bears’ picnic with our new starters in Reception, to help them with their important transition into school. There is so much more to see and read about, at www.morton.lincs.sch.uk or follow our school on Twitter @MortonCEPS.

JUNE 2021

Phoenix Rises from The Wistow Maze

T

o mark a new beginning of hope and freedom, the award-winning Wistow Maze has been designed in the shape of a phoenix rising from the flames. The giant eightacre maize maze has a fun Quiz Trail hidden amongst its three miles of pathways, with high level bridges and towers giving stunning panoramic views. Visitors have to find twelve quiz boards which will test their knowledge on other mythical creatures. The maze is redesigned each year using GPS satellite technology, and at the end of the season is harvested for cattle fodder! “The phoenix is often used as a symbol of recovery and renewal, which seems very appropriate for this year”, explains Diana Brooks, owner of Wistow Maze. “With plenty of space, our maze offers great outdoor entertainment for young and old.” Visitors can also take part in a variety of mini mazes and games in the Activity Funyard, which includes

a space-hopper track, hoopla, beanbag throwing and a football shooting game. Across the road is the Wistow Rural Centre with its cafe, garden centre, art gallery, model village and numerous shops, making it a great day out for all ages. Wistow Maze is a winner of Leicestershire’s “Best Visitor Attraction” and attracts over 20,000 visitors each year. Open: Monday July 19th - Sunday September 5th (daily), then weekends only until Sunday September 19th. 10am – 6pm: Free Parking. Admission charges: Child £6.95, Adult £8.50, Family Ticket (2+2) £28 More information: Visit www.wistow.com or call 07884 403889 Wistow Maze is situated opposite the Wistow Rural Centre, which is signed from the A6 at Great Glen and Kibworth and the A5199 at Kilby. (Kibworth Rd, Wistow, Leics. LE8 0QF).

Did You Know? The phoenix represents the cycle of death, rebirth and renewed life. This mythical bird is a symbol of hope, immortality, resurrection, solitude, and grace. Just like the phoenix emerges from its ashes, so can man after devastation and loss. The phoenix gives mankind

hope and urges us to fight on. People have always associated the phoenix with the worship of the Sun. According to myth, only one phoenix exists at a time and lives for approximately 500 years. At the end of its life, the phoenix builds a nest using aromatic

plants. It then sets the nest on fire and is consumed by the flames. Out of the ashes, a new phoenix springs to life. When it’s strong enough, it flies the last phoenix’s ashes to Heliopolis in Egypt. There, it places them on the altar of the Egyptian Sun God.

Words from the Mayor COUNCILLOR PAUL FELLOWS

‘‘

Wow! Judi and I are Mayor and Mayoress of Bourne!” are the exact words I wrote when, in 2017, we became Mayor and Mayoress for the first time. How time flies because, here we are now, privileged to be back once again.

A great deal has happened in the last eighteen months, but we are optimistic that during the coming year we will, as a town, move positively forwards. We can be extremely proud of how our community has supported itself through these difficult times and we will build on all we have learnt. I do need to pay tribute to Colin and Fiona Pattison, the outgoing Mayor and Mayoress, who throughout, what was almost an impossible year in office, were so positive and supportive. Thank you both. We will not be choosing any particular, designated charity to raise funds for during our year in office, but rather want to raise funds for projects specifically targeted for our youngest residents of Bourne. They were disproportionately affected by the pandemic, missing out on much that we all have taken for granted, especially being able to socialise and develop important life skills. Later in the year, circumstances permitting, we will be supporting a music concert for young people as well as events to include dance, drama and visual art. It would be brilliant to lay the foundations for a “Young People’s Council” for Bourne. For me, one of the ‘best bits’ of previously being the Mayor was doing ‘work experience’ at many varied places in Bourne. I met many interesting people and learnt hugely about what actually goes on in our town and what matters to them. I really want to do this again and would ask anyone, or any establishment, who would put up with me for a day to get in touch with me directly, or the Town Clerk. It could end up being ‘take your grandad to work’ but I will contribute to anything that needs doing! Anyone who knows me will have heard my “Mayor’s Mantra”: We will go to the opening of an envelope if asked and though, somewhat tongue in cheek, if we can be of any support to you, or an organisation you belong to, please ask. We will always support and promote Bourne.

Come and Join Us for a

Picnic in the Park

O

n Sunday July 4th, we, the Bourne Town Council, are inviting you and your family to join us in the Wellhead Park. Bring a picnic if you wish, or just come along. There will be ‘Live Music’ spots throughout the Park, and we have many local performers who are absolutely keen to do what they do best … entertain! The Picnic will officially start at 11am and be finished by 4pm There will be a chance to purchase refreshments, but your own, squashed, family tomato sandwiches could really be the way to go! A small fair will be located in South Street car park with “Covid-friendly” family rides. If you do decide to join us, please make sure you choose a spot that has space around it for the comfort of everyone else. Please make sure you take any rubbish home with you or make sure it goes in a bin, but most importantly have a good time. Hopefully, this “USA Independence Day” will be a date we can build upon.
