Welcome to your September issue... There may still be a lot of caution around as we move slowly back to our pre-March 2020 lives. School “bubbles” are set to burst as our youngsters return to their studies this month – massive congratulations to those who achieved success in their external exams in the summer and good luck in the years to come.
W
hat better way to boost a whole country’s spirit (and realisation that we’re maybe not too bad a country) than to have witnessed the recent Tokyo Olympics? Amongst all the fabulous performances, one in particular stands out for me - Charlotte Worthington, after falling off her bike but then having another go at an almost impossible trick and landing a BMX gold – if at first you don’t succeed! Hoping you all enjoy our offering for this month, as nights start to pull in and “you know what” is a little over a hundred days away!

Those Tokyo Olympics certainly put a smile on many faces, and there were so many magical moments to savour. Tom Daley’s knitting prowess almost took the spotlight away from his diving achievements! Next up are the Summer Paralympics in Tokyo, again held over from 2020, which run until September 5th – more medals heading this way, hopefully. On the sporting theme, the mighty Posh have made a plucky start to life in the Championship – fingers crossed that I can still be saying that twelve months from now. And finally … I saw a racehorse called “Dalai Lama” running last week. I would have had £5 each way on it but I’m not a Tibetan man! Enjoy the sporting month ahead, alongside the contents of this, your favourite magazine!

A Line to Kill BY ANTHONY HOROWITZ There has never been a murder on the tiny island of Alderney, the perfect location for a brand-new literary festival. Private Investigator Daniel Hawthorne has been invited to talk about his new book. The writer, Anthony Horowitz, travels with him. Alderney is in turmoil over a planned power line that will cut through it, desecrating a war cemetery and turning neighbour against neighbour. The visiting authors all seem to be harbouring any number of unpleasant secrets. When the festival’s wealthy sponsor is found brutally killed, Alderney goes into lockdown and Hawthorne knows that he doesn’t have to look too far for suspects. There’s no escape. The killer is still on the island. And there’s about to be a second death...

While the world outside is changing, inside, the curse creeps up all nine floors and through each door. Soon, the building’s longest kept secret - the truth of what happened to Jessie will finally be heard.

Silent Earth
BY DAVE GOULSON
Insects are essential for life as we know it. As they become more scarce, our world will slowly grind to a halt; we simply cannot function without them. Drawing on the latest ground-breaking research and a lifetime’s study, Dave Goulson reveals the shocking decline of insect populations that has taken place in recent decades, with potentially catastrophic consequences. 4
Bourne
He passionately argues that we must all learn to love, respect and care for our six-legged friends. We may feel helpless in the face of many of the environmental issues that loom on our horizon, but Goulson shows us how we can all take simple steps to encourage insects and counter their destruction. Leavers and New Arrivals!
T
he school year can be marked in many ways; school terms, the calendar, seasons or Church festivals. Perhaps the most poignant change in the school year, but one of the most rewarding, is to see our Year Six pupils leave to make their transition to secondary school.
Despite the challenges of lockdowns and remote learning, the class of 2021 embodied the resilience and confidence shown by children across our school. The laughs and smiles shown in their leavers’ assembly were great to see. We wish them all good luck as they begin the next stage of their learning journey, safe in the knowledge that we have supported and encouraged them on their way. This lovely photo shows them with their leavers’ hoodies on. To mark another transition in the school year, we will soon be welcoming our new intakes into Reception and Nursery. It is such an exciting
moment to open the classroom doors to those starting their learning journey with us. This year, we are investing further in our facilities, with a new outdoor learning environment for our Reception class to complement our onsite ‘Forest School’ and purposebuilt Nursery for two to four-year-olds. Whilst school has been open throughout the pandemic, we have been closed to visitors. However, now that these are allowed, we will be hosting an Open Day on Thursday October 7th, from 9:30 am onwards. We welcome families with pre-school and school-aged children to come and find out more about our school.

Hallam Travel: Taking you places since the 1990s By Lorraine Hallam
W
e have been organising days out since the early 1990s when the children were small, starting with ‘Disney on Ice’, so that they could share the experience with their extended family and friends, gradually adding other ones for them to enjoy, such as Legoland, Woburn Safari Park, and Cadbury World. On taking over the local Girls’ Brigade company in 1994 we turned these ideas into fundraising events for the Girls’ Brigade, opening them up to the local community. I resigned from The Girls’ Brigade in 2005, but people within the local community still wanted us to organise days out for them, so in 2006 we started building it up to what it is today and are now trading as Hallam Travel. Some good reasons why you should choose Hallam Travel: Only one pick up/drop off You don’t have to ride around the countryside for hours picking up other passengers before you get anywhere. There is a free car park at our Long Sutton departure. At the Spalding departure the maximum cost for parking will be £3 per day. Modern coaches We always use modern executive coaches. Each coach has reclining seats, toilet and seatbelts, which must now, by law, be worn, and air conditioning. Comfort breaks We have regular comfort and refreshment stops on all journeys taking over two hours. Friendly and helpful staff The key to the success of your day out is dependent upon the skills and knowledge of your driver and courier. We believe, at Hallam Travel, that the driver is there to drive the coach. Each coach will have its own courier, usually myself, so that we are able to give you our immediate attention without distracting the driver. We look forward to helping you make new memories. To book your next trip, please contact: Hallam Travel, PO Box 52, Holbeach PE12 2AX. Tel: 01406 493198; Email: lorraine@hallamtravel.co.uk 8

s life begins to return to normal, it is important to remember that certain regular check-ups on our health need to be reestablished after the last year and a half. This is certainly the message put out by Dr Rao, owner of Bourne’s independent opticians, ‘The One Stop Eye Shop’ in West Street.

Ready to Fly Again?
A
“
erophobia” is an intense fear that is out of proportion to the actual danger, which is particularly relevant to fears of flying. Most people will agree that flying is safe, yet frightening. They have a hard time reconciling their fear with safety statistics. Although we know our phobias are not logical, we cannot reason ourselves out of one. They can stop us from taking part in family holidays or put them off for years and years, thus interfering with work and social lives. One important thing to note is that fear of flying is not always a single phobia, as many people who fear flying are also claustrophobic, or frightened of being locked in the plane and unable to choose when to get off, feeling out of control. Our fears of flying have triggers, which are thoughts, images, sensations and memories to which we have become sensitized. A person who is sensitized to certain bodily feelings might fear turbulence or normal take-off and landing. And someone who fears heights might become terrified thinking about flying many miles above the ground. Fear of flying is split into three main groups; which one do you belong to?
1 2 3
Those who don’t fly or haven’t flown for more than five years despite the opportunity to do so. Those who fly only when absolutely necessary, with extreme terror. Those who fly when required, but with anxiety.
What’s behind the Phobias and Fear? With the fear of flying, there is a huge component of anticipatory anxiety, or the fear experienced in anticipation of taking a flight. Any successful treatment will help fearful fliers manage anticipatory anxiety because many people avoid planning flights, or they just cancel them.
“Flying starts from the ground. The more grounded you are, the higher you fly.” The good news is that your brain has an ability to learn and change; you are constantly learning. Changing and learning new habits, such as being more relaxed and calm, can help overcome simple phobias very quickly. Hypnotherapy communicates with the subconscious, filtering through how you want to be, rather than how you currently are, taking back control. Flying phobia is a common disorder, but it is possible to overcome the fear of flying with Solution Focused Hypnotherapy.

Healthcare
Late Diagnosis Costs Livelihoods and Lives!
Nick Rossington, Director of Resurgam Health Ltd, Appointed Representative of WPA Healthcare Practice Plc.
I
“
t was the late diagnosis of our elevenyear-old daughter’s bone cancer in February 2017, following twenty-three fruitless appointments over a six-month period, that prompted a desire to help people have a choice in their medical provision. We didn’t have health insurance at the time, but it was only when we were at our wits’ end and decided to take Alice for a private consultation that her disease was diagnosed.
Thankfully, following eight months of chemotherapy treatment and limb salvage surgery on the NHS, Alice is doing well and enjoying being back at school. However, the whole experience brought home to me, first-hand, how devastating a late diagnosis and delayed treatment can be – and how it can cost livelihoods, and lives! My daughter’s chances of having osteosarcoma were one in three million. There is a chance, therefore, that any of us can suffer from an illness at any time. We learned that an early diagnosis and prompt treatment in a hospital of your choice is what having health insurance gives you. Following a career in financial services, I became a local Appointed Representative of WPA
Healthcare Practice Plc in September 2018. As a Healthcare Partner, I provide advice on WPA Health Insurance Policies only, and how they can protect your family and business. After all, we insure our houses and cars, but aren’t our lives, and livelihoods more important? For individuals/families, having private medical insurance gives you the confidence of having access to an early specialist consultation, or where required, prompt treatment. Most importantly, you give yourselves the best chance of being treated as soon as possible. For businesses, our Enterprise Flexible Benefits product provides access to prompt private hospital and specialist treatment for the business owner and employees, thereby looking to improve employee productivity and reducing staff absenteeism due to ill-health. Whether you are interested in family or business private medical insurance, please contact me to discuss your options further. Please note, preexisting and long-term medical conditions are generally not covered. Applications are subject to medical underwriting and a maximum joining age applies on some policies.”

As we become older, what protections should be put in place? WORDS FROM RICHARD WOOD When we get older, it is always advisable to make a will. This is best dealt with by a solicitor with experience and who will be regulated by the Solicitors Regulatory Authority and will be insured. The benefit of a will is that it creates certainty as to what we want to do with our property when we die. It can ensure that our chosen loved ones benefit. This can be very important, especially for couples who co-habit but are unmarried. If we do not make a will, the state has provided an order of beneficiaries under what is termed “Intestacy” which may mean that people are inheriting, and they are the ones who we would not want to do so. We can also consider making a Lasting Power of Attorney to protect us during our lifetime but when we need others to help us to use our finances to protect our needs. A Lasting Power of Attorney is a legal document that allows
someone trusted to make decisions for us if we are no longer able to make decisions, or if we no longer want to make those decisions ourselves. This could be a temporary situation, such as hospitalisation, or more permanent such as being told that we are suffering from a longterm health issue. We can consider making a Lasting Power of Attorney for either “Financial” decisions and/or “Health and Care” decisions. If we lose capacity, or have similar problems, a more complicated procedure is required which requires more work to be put into place. The court fees payable are higher and we have to wait longer to be able to have decisions made to protect us. Being in control of these matters can be vital to protect our interests in older age. It also protects our loved ones.

DERMAL FILLERS
Four Years On... and Stronger
W
Well guys … September is finally here, and we are happy to announce that we are celebrating our FOUR-year anniversary!!! e would like to thank everyone who has picked up the phone or messaged us over the years, as we have now listed over one hundred regular clients, and rising, on our books. Our business has now become very successful, with us working six days a week, trying to fit in with clients’ needs and their working patterns. We take pride in the relationship we have with our clients and feel that’s what sets us apart from most aesthetic clinics, as we offer a friendly, relaxed, and welcoming vibe. We see our clients as friends rather than just a name and a treatment. Our biggest asset is Alistair, an extremely professional practitioner who can offer amazing advice and reassurance due to his twenty-six years working in pharmacy. He is always able to allay any worries you may have so that you feel completely at ease before you go ahead with any treatment. One of our core beliefs is talking to our clients
to find out what they would like to see us offer next, and what treatments interest them; after all, what you want is integral to our business. We strongly believe in the importance of reinvestment and enjoy developing our skills. This ethos has driven us to enhance our offering to include new courses, such as the range of

Turkey Neck
We have seen unprecedented demand for the five-point facelift and turkey neck procedures (profhilo), as well as the undereye injections for those fine lines and dark circles (jalupro), since we qualified in them a few months ago. They have proved extremely popular with our clientele.

Our clinic is very discreet and in a lovely, serene setting with parking available too, for extra ease. Call now on 07957 373162 and book in for the treatment of your choice.
Fat Dissolving
AFTER
For October, we will be training in fat dissolving injections, which are a reasonably priced way to remove and permanently dissolve localised and hard-to-shift pockets of fat. These target areas such as double chins, back fat, stomach, knees and even pseudogynocomastia (‘man boobs’) in men, where diet and exercise cannot help, moving into another phase of the “medical aesthetics” world. We invite any potential clients who may be slightly nervous or ‘sitting on the fence’ about going ahead with any procedures to come in and have a chat as we offer free consultations that allow you to go away and think about your decision without any pressure.

The Butterfield Centre Friendship Hub: Now Up and Running!
M
onday August 2nd, 2021, was a special day for the people of Bourne as the newly refurbished Butterfield Centre Friendship Hub was opened and the mural, designed and painted by the very talented Florence Ashton, was unveiled.
This fabulous facility is housed within what was, for many years, the Butterfield Cottage Hospital, on the corner of North Road and Meadowgate. What is Available? • The Centre has re-started the very popular “Friendship Lunch Club” in the newly renovated dining room. A set, two-course meal for £6.00. is offered on Wednesdays, between 12 noon and 2pm. Booking is essential.
• New “Coffee and Chat” sessions are available on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 10am until 12 noon. Meet up with old friends and make new ones, boosting wellbeing and preventing social isolation and loneliness.
• “Fish and Chip Friday” will be held on the last Friday of the month. Delicious fish and chips from Georges (fee payable) are offered, with lots of chat and friendship to accompany them. Again, booking is essential. • “Community Pantry”. Open on Mondays (1pm – 2pm), Wednesdays and Fridays (1pm – 3pm). To help prevent food waste, this is a delicious way of helping the planet, saving money and feeding the community.

Heritage Open Days: September 10th – 19th 2021
E
stablished in 1994, this celebration of our national culture has grown into the country’s largest community festival, and we are fortunate to be in one of the most important areas, historically speaking, in the country.
Our local history and heritage link back to 5,000BC and visitors are being welcomed to varying events on individual dates between September 10th and 19th. Some may require booking, some have guided tours, others are more casual. However, all contain fascinating local insights and are looking forward to welcoming visitors of all ages. Although on a smaller scale than previous years, there are still many local venues being manned by volunteers opening the doors to the public to showcase local gems. In addition to the usual ‘big hitters’ like Peterborough Cathedral (with candlelit tours to music), there’s a chance to look at Railworld Wildlife Haven or take in a final tour of the ‘Back of the Shop’ at J.W. D’Arcy Jewellers before they close for good. Not all the events are in Peterborough – many are in the surrounding villages; for example, you
could visit Richard III’s birthplace and the scene of some of Britain’s bloodiest history - or if you prefer, enjoy a relaxing village talk and tour. Alternatively, visit some rural parish churches, all of which have something of historic or artistic interest to share. Peterborough Civic Society have long been associated with coordinating this event locally and, despite the hiatus last year, they have been collating local information on this national celebration of “all things heritage” in September. As the dates and times of opening vary considerably from place to place, and of course, due to the previous uncertainty of initially being able to guarantee the event going ahead prior to the Covid restrictions being lifted, we were unable to produce leaflets or brochures for distribution. However, there is a wealth of information on the Heritage Open Days website – not just about events in our area, but also nationally – so please spread the word!
NB Some venues may still require people to follow Covid restrictions.
Don’t forget the dates … September 10th – 19th, 2021.

Toolbar Reopens fter being forced to close its doors eighteen months ago, because of Covid, Toolbar, the local charity that supports people between jobs, will be welcoming guests again on Monday September 6th, at 10am. at a new venue, The Len Pick Suite, at Bourne Town Football Club, Abbey Road. Bourne.
When you need help to find another job there is no substitute for being able to talk to someone face-toface, so if you have been made redundant, drop in and find out for yourself what Toolbar can offer. Even today, many people are not confident with the use of computers and, as everything has to be done online, that can be a massive block to getting re-employed. Volunteers will be on hand to assist and guide anyone who needs help in that direction. Lists of local vacancies are available, as well as local newspapers. Sometimes it is just good to have a (free) cup of tea or coffee and a chat! The Toolbar trustees and volunteers very much appreciate the support they have received from the management and staff at the Bourne Snooker Centre, that has been their home for more than ten years but felt that more space was needed to provide better social distancing to suit Covid recommendations. Thanks also to Universal Fitness for offering reduced cost sessions to Toolbar clients. Since it was formed in 2009, Toolbar has helped many people back to work or to go into business in their own right and is looking forward to helping many more people in the future.
For more information, please contact Toolbar on 07749 689026, toolbar.bourne@gmail.com or www.toolbar-bourne.org, also on Facebook.

“THEY THINK IT’S ALL OVER!”
Certainly Not – Here’s Walking Football! When watching football on the TV do you yearn for your old playing days? Or indeed, do you look back and wish you’d taken up football, something that was always on the ‘to-do’ list, but the years passed by, and it got away from you? Or perhaps you are just looking for ways to improve your physical health and mental wellbeing?
A
solution is now on your doorstep, as we have brought walking football, one of the fastest growing sports in the UK, to Bourne.
Aimed primarily at players of fifty years of age and older, male and female, walking football provides a safe sport that allows players to enjoy the game, no matter what their skill level. Rules that prevent contact and demand players show courtesy for those with lesser skills or mobility, mean that the sessions held at Bourne can be played by anyone from fifty all the way up to eighty and over! So long as you are able to walk and kick a ball, then the sport is there for you. We also allow players under fifty to participate where the individual has health, physical or mobility challenges. We currently hold three sessions a week at Elsea Park, Bourne;
Tuesday 8pm - 9pm ● Thursday 12noon - 1pm ● Saturday 10am - 11am ●
Some of our players (about 50% of our membership) also enjoy playing in competition. As such, we have 50+, 60+, 65+ and 70+ team squads that play in friendlies, leagues and tournaments. Pandemics allowing, we even try to do an overseas walking football trip once a year. If you would like to try out the sport, please make contact to arrange a free ‘taster’ session. You can find more information on our website www.stamfordstrollers.org.uk or contact the club secretary, Taff Lovesey (taff@lovesey.net 07894 659479).

Trustee – Bourne United Charities CIO Bourne United Charities (BUC) are looking to appoint a Trustee to serve on its Board of Trustees. This is an unremunerated position and is for an initial term of four years. BUC are custodians of a portfolio of assets, the revenues of which are utilised in a number of areas within the parish of Bourne. The Trustees meet eleven times a year as a body and there are additional meetings throughout the course of the year for members of the subcommittees which oversee specific areas of BUC’s activities. Wherever possible, meetings are held in the evening, but there are occasions when meetings are held during the day and you must be in a position to devote an additional ten to twenty hours over the year to this purpose. This is an extremely interesting role where you will be able to make a long-lasting and positive contribution to the parish as part of a group of Trustees, helping to ensure that the assets of BUC are properly maintained and that the income generated from those assets is applied in line with the aims of our Scheme which is governed by the Charities Commission.
To be considered for the appointment of Trustee you must:
✓ ✓
Be eligible to serve as a Trustee as per the terms of the Scheme.
Be able to demonstrate an interest in the provision of services which provide a general benefit to the inhabitants of the parish. We are particularly interested in hearing from applicants who have experience in either health or welfare management, although applicants with other relevant skills will be given serious consideration.
✓
To apply for this position, please submit your CV and a short covering letter outlining your relevant experience by Friday 10th September 2021 to: Mrs G S Clingo, Clerk to the Trustees, Bourne United Charities, The Red Hall, South Street, Bourne, Lincolnshire PE10 9LY.

Will & Probate Services
2021: The Year to Protect You and Your Family
L
ADVICE FROM NICK ASH, MANAGING DIRECTOR WILL AND PROBATE SERVICES
Inheritance Tax and Giving it All Away ast week, I had a meeting with a client about their Inheritance Tax planning. They were property rich, had lots of savings and were of a generation that had really good pensions. They had an income of around £50,000 per year but were spending nowhere near that much to live.
The couple were already over their Inheritance Tax threshold, so by saving almost £30,000 per year they were adding an additional £12,000 per year to their future tax bill. The solution was to start giving away some of their wealth in the hope of reducing their Inheritance Tax bill.
2
Now, many of you will have heard about the “sevenyear-rule” … if you give something away and live for seven years, then it will be outside of your estate for Inheritance Tax purposes. This rule is one of the most misunderstood planning tools that are available, and it is far more nuanced than just giving your stuff away.
3
So first, let’s dispel the “number one myth” – you can’t give your home to your children and live for seven years and then the house falls outside of your estate, it simply doesn’t work. I still get asked about this every week and people are still amazed when I tell them no! Now that’s out of the way, let’s consider what you can do
1
Spend some money! I know it goes against the grain when you have spent your life “saving for that rainy day” but spend it. Go on your dream holiday, buy that new car, tick off everything from your bucket list.
Give some away. You can give £3,000 a year away and so can your spouse; start doing it and save £1,200 per year in Inheritance Tax. You can also give any amount of £250 gifts (so that’s Christmas and birthdays sorted!) and larger gifts, if close relatives are getting married. You can give away your excess income … which brings me right back to my clients. One of the least-used gifting rules is the one that says you can give away your excess income without Inheritance Tax consequences. I was able to advise my clients to set up three trust funds, one for each of their grandchildren, and give them £10,000 per year each. This means that the grandchildren get an excellent start in life and the taxman doesn’t get £12,000 for each year that the clients didn’t spend all their income. One word of warning though; all of this needs to be planned and documented in the right way, so if you want to see how a gifting strategy could fit into your estate plan, you need to take professional advice. Call us today on 01778 252301 to book a free initial consultation.

Scams are fraud and fraud is a crime – and it may come as no surprise to know that criminals have used the COVID-19 pandemic to target victims online, by e-mail or via text; mainly through impersonation scams, romance fraud and investment scams. Parcel fraud, HMRC, NHS Test and Trace, vaccination, ticket fraud, social media investment fund scams and attempts to dupe Tax Credits customers are amongst the top set of sophisticated schemes. Each year, scams cost the UK economy between £5bn-£10bn. In addition to the financial impact, scams can have a severe emotional and psychological impact upon victims. While anyone, irrespective of age, gender, education or economic background, can be a victim of a scam, these crimes are experienced particularly by people in our communities who are vulnerable for a variety of reasons, including poverty, isolation, frailty, disability and cognitive impairment, and by those who have been targeted specifically by organised, predatory criminals. Here is how YOU can help: It is easy to become a Friend Against Scams, just by attending a short online awareness session.
Sma ll large and deliv loads ere your d to door
In just eight minutes, you will be guided through types of scams, how to spot a scam victim, spotting the signs of a scam, helping family and friends and reporting and advice.

Liberty Partnership are delighted to launch
‘The Liberty Lunch’ to celebrate our community champions and those people that go the extra mile
BY RICHARD ASH CHARTERED FINANCIAL PLANNER AND DIRECTOR You may know one of those ‘champions’ who always helps where they can or goes that extra mile for a neighbour, a stranger or a friend, and if you do then we would like to hear from you. Our plan is to offer a modest reward of lunch out at a local pub, diner, coffee shop or eatery up to the value of £100. We would ask that this offer is taken up locally to support our fantastic local businesses. We will select a monthly ‘champion’ from any nominations we receive. When contacting us, we would ask that you say who they are, how you feel they have positively contributed towards our community, and provide their contact information, having asked their permission to do so. Please see this as being a good thing, something to celebrate, a way in which we at Liberty Partnership can celebrate our community. Sadly, we will not be able to recognise everyone, which we hope you all understand.

Mortgage Advice
The Fixed Rate Mortgage:
Is it for you?
A
ADVICE FROM LUCA PALUMBO, MORTGAGE & PROTECTION CONSULTANT
mortgage is arguably the biggest financial commitment you’ll ever make, so understanding the options available to you is extremely important. One of the biggest decisions you face when choosing, is whether you should go for a fixed rate or a variable rate mortgage. If you’ve taken out a fixed rate mortgage, your interest rate is locked in for a fixed period, in other words, the interest rate – and consequently your monthly mortgage repayment – will remain unchanged for an agreed number of years. The interest rate stays the same for the set period, usually between two and five years. When the fixed rate term expires, you are automatically switched to a standard variable rate (SVR). This is usually either your lender’s SVR or a “tracker” rate. As the monthly repayment stays the same throughout the agreed term, it’s easier to budget for monthly expenses and stay on top of your finances. Once the fixed rate term expires, you have two choices – either do nothing, or look to re-mortgage to a new deal. If you do nothing, you’re put onto a SVR, which tends to be higher than the fixed rate. And, because you’ll pay more interest, your monthly mortgage repayment might go up. If your fixed rate period is about to end, you should evaluate your current mortgage and consider switching to a new mortgage deal. It’s a good idea to start looking about three to four months before your fixed rate period expires. This will allow
sufficient time for you to switch straight to your new mortgage without ever paying the SVR. If you’re concerned about the stability of your financial situation and would rather know exactly how much your monthly mortgage repayments are each month, a fixed rate mortgage could be the right option for you. If you are coming to the end of a fixed rate mortgage and are looking to re-mortgage, you can, but you need to understand the implications before you make a decision. It’s possible to remortgage with your existing mortgage provider or switch to a new one. Whichever option you choose, it’s likely that you’ll have to pay fees for exiting your existing mortgage early. When a lender offers you a mortgage, you usually have between three and six months to accept it – after that, you’ll have to reapply. That’s why you should start your search when your current mortgage deal has at least three months or more to go. The end of your mortgage deal could open up some interesting possibilities. Doing nothing is an option, but it’s always worth researching what else is out there as you might find there’s money to be saved.
*Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage*

Shocking News!
‘Back to School’ Advice
I
BY COLEEN EVERITT, ALTO ELECTRICAL LIMITED
t’s that time of year when we are getting our little ones ready for the new school year ahead. I know I’m often not surprised when I see how much my three sons can destroy their shoes and trousers on a frequent basis! I think many of us will be aware just how curious, and, I dare say, destructive their young minds and fingers can be. Picking at seams and soles, pulling threads and even cutting away at things with knives or scissors. I am hoping that I’m not completely alone here!
If you’ve got a creative child, like my eldest, they may also like to build things. We’ve spent an absolute fortune on Lego over the years, as it was the only thing that would keep him entertained for any length of time. But, over the summer holidays, I was sorting through his room, and I found there were a couple of things that were really quite frightening.
pushed in the plug and received a shock. Some of you may know from my sponsored haircut, that he has a heart condition, so this is alarming. He went on to tell me that it was ok because it tripped off and he didn’t really feel it!
So, this is me appealing to you on two counts.
1 2
As a mother, to ask you when you are looking through to collect your children’s BACK TO SCHOOL kit, to take an extra moment to check your children’s electrical appliances in their bedroom.
As an electrician, to ask you to make sure that you have RCD protection on your board (consumer unit), and if you have, make sure you regularly check it - (do it now!) If you find any damaged cables or electrical goods that are damaged (or taken to pieces) please ensure that they are either discarded or repaired.
Over the recent months, his heated blanket must have stopped working and he knew that the first thing he should do is to check the fuse. He doesn’t need mum’s help, as he is thirteen now and knows much more than me [sarcasm!] To fix it and test it, he took another fuse from another appliance and plugged it in ... WITHOUT putting the back on the plug. Upon finding this, I, of course, questioned what had happened. It was explained that he had

A Move to the Country?
I
t may not necessarily be a move out of the city to the country. It could be the fact that you are planning on placing a substantial distance between your children and their separated parent in moving out of the area. Although it may be well known, and indeed expected, that a move abroad with a child post-separation is likely to need the other parent’s specific consent and indeed the approval of the court in certain circumstances, most people would assume that they are free to move house, even hundreds of miles away to the opposite part of the country, if the new home is still within the UK. Following recent court judgments, that is in fact no longer the case. It used to be that courts would not prevent a parent moving out of the area with the child to another location in the UK, if challenged by the separated parent whose contact was going to be affected, unless there was an exceptional reason to object to the move. Now the courts’ test will be closer to that applied to international relocation, namely that the court focuses solely on the child’s best interests with no presumption in favour of a primary carer seeking to relocate.
That is not to say that if you have given careful thought as to why it is better for your child to move with his family to another area, which could be for reasons of educational opportunities and/ or improved career prospects for the parent, if challenged by the parent without care, you would not be successful in a court application to stop you moving. But make no assumptions and, if the separated parent is objecting to your plans, do check on the legal implications before you go any further. A specialist family lawyer will be able to advise.

Mayor
Words from the Mayor
COUNCILLOR PAUL FELLOWS
August has always been a month when we expect so much and that never includes rain!
D
espite this, I have always held on to the hope that August would have at least one minor heatwave, and then consoled myself with the fact that at least the rain was warm. For the Picnic in the Park, I want my memory to say the rain was warm; it was certainly wet, but the performances on the stage and the smiles of Bourne people happy to be enjoying being out, in the company of their friends and family, were really “well warm”. A huge thank you to all involved in making it happen and everyone who came along.
Hopefully, you and your families managed to get a summer break that refreshed and was not too exhausting. As we get nearer to a return to school for
the younger ones amongst us, let’s hope we are also a huge step nearer to a return to normality. Judi and I were awestruck by the colour and composition of the mural on the wall of the Butterfield Centre’s Friendship Hub when we were invited to attend its unveiling in early August. Painted by Florence Ashton, it’s crying out to be transferred on to posters/postcards and even a tea towel! It’s a wonderful ‘advert’ for Bourne. Elsea Park was able to hold its Summer Extravaganza for residents and an amazingly ‘jolly time’ was had by all. Congratulations and well done to Elsea Park Trustees, a great event. Probably the last event of the summer of 2021 will be the Bourne and District Lions Family Fun Day on September 5th on the Rec. Why not get down there and have some fun?
Picnic in the Park
T
raditionally, the Summer Festival scene in England is characterised by lots of young, and not so young, people frolicking in a muddy field! The Picnic in the Park in Bourne was characterised by a sea of brollies in front of the stage, their owners enjoying talented performances from late morning to late afternoon.
The weather set out to make fools of Bourne Town Council, who had postponed from what seemingly had been a better day, weatherwise, in early July, but positivity won the day. Each performance brought smiles and applause; kicked off by Bourne’s very own ‘Tuneless Choir’ through to the energetic and vibrant L.D.C., with a host of amazing local, solo performances in between; initially from underneath the brollies and then 66
Bourne
in sunshine, as the weather decided to behave itself. Perhaps that was because it never rains on Disney Princesses! The day was an absolute tribute to the spirit of Bourne, as people came out to enjoy the company of others, support the town and most importantly enjoy themselves. Congratulations to all involved in making the event happen, thanks to Bourne United Charities and well done Bourne Town Council. Let’s have another one next year please! S E P T E M BE R 2 0 2 1

AP APPLIANCE CARE: PUT YOUR ‘WHITE GOODS’ INTO ANDY’S SAFE HANDS
rowland’s Andy Schofield confirms the opinion that you’re never too old to start a new business.
This sixty-two-year-old domestic appliance engineer has decided to step back from full-time employment, which has seen him recently complete almost twenty years with BSH Home Appliances. Domestic circumstances and a re-appraisal of his work/ life balance has meant that the expertise and valuable experience Andy gained on the Bosch-NEFF-Siemens range of products can now be channelled into his new domestic appliances servicing and repairs business.
Andy, trading as AP Appliance Care, will be offering assistance to domestic owners of all makes and types of ‘white goods’, but Andy’s specialisms in built-in ovens and coffee machines would single him out as the ‘go-to guy’ for anyone with the Bosch and NEFF ‘slide and hide’ type of built-in oven, or the larger, built-in coffee machines such as Gaggenau, from the German manufacturer of highend domestic appliances. The time spent with the prestigious BSH company and Andy’s regular calls on customers
