Mass vaccinations against Covid-19 have certainly slowed down the pandemic’s deadly progress, and we have managed to return to a form of normality. Next year may even see some of us searching for our passports and getting stir-crazy in airport queues again!

Let me be the first to wish you all good health and happiness for Christmas and the new year. Just in case your crackers haven’t got any cracking jokes in them, try these for sighs! The police called and asked where my sons had been between 3 and 5. I told them, “Headstart Nursery”. I dreamed I was drowning in an ocean of orange pop – clearly a Fanta Sea! Amongst many inspirational people we lost in 2021, one was Eddie Jaku on October 12th, aged 101. This survivor of the Holocaust had written in his memoirs, (entitled “The Happiest Man on Earth”) the following beautiful words, “May you always have love to share, may you always have health to spare and may you always have friends that care.” Enjoy the read!

ANGEL HOTEL UNDER NEW OWNERSHIP

he Angel Hotel in Bourne Market Place has a new owner, who will need no introduction to the many regular customers who continue to keep the hotel’s thriving coffee shop a hive of activity. Two years already in her post as manager, Jess Greatorex needed little persuasion to take over the business when Carol Schofield decided to back down after eight successful years at the helm. Carol sees it as “semi-retirement”, in order to make the transition for Jess as seamless as possible. Although still only thirty-one, Jess has already gained a broad sweep of experience in the hospitality sector. Her early days saw Jess as a chef at the prestigious Hambleton Hall, followed by a spell as Deputy Manager of a hotel in Bourton-on-theWater in the Cotswolds before she moved to Bourne. Refurbishments are now almost complete for the spacious Coach House function room, which will be hosting several suppers, dances, and parties in the

weeks ahead. A perfect venue for wedding and birthday celebrations, the Coach House is only a part of the Angel’s offering though. The Griffin Inn Wins Coveted First Place in National Television Show

n Wednesday November 10th, viewers of Channel 4’s “Four in a Bed” show were able to discover for themselves what many of us locals have already known for years, that Irnham’s fabulous Griffin Inn ranks right up there amongst the best in the business!

The programme sees the irrepressible Jamie and Leila Benton-Jones invite three other bed-andbreakfast-hosting couples to the Griffin to try and prove that theirs is the best in terms of quality but principally, for its value for money. The three other couples then reciprocate with their own establishments and a final decision is reached, once the visits have all been completed, a lengthy process which actually took place in March this year.

Remembrance Sunday

t was an absolute privilege for Judi and I to stand with the Mayor’s Cadet and representatives from the British Legion in the centre of town as more groups than ever marched past on Remembrance Sunday.

I could not be prouder of our town than when I stand at the War Memorial on this particular occasion. This year there were more wreaths laid, and more people filling the gardens around the Memorial, than ever. It was truly awe-inspiring to see a community coming together, as ours did on that Sunday, for a common purpose of remembrance and shared reflection. It demonstrated so well the positivity that is Bourne.

November is ‘the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness’ and, for so many of us, the slow build-up to the wonderfully ‘overblown’ celebration of Christmas. As you read this, our town’s Christmas lights will have been switched on and I would like to thank everyone who has contributed in making this happen once more. We have probably never been more ready to celebrate Christmas than this year. I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of Bourne Town Council to wish you all a truly splendid Christmas! Have a great time and stay safe.

MEET SHADOW, THURLBY’S “ASSIST DOG” Thurlby Community Primary Academy now have Shadow, their “assist dog”, at school every day to help their pupils with their learning and emotional needs. Shadow has been in training since November 2020, when she was only a few weeks old. She very quickly became the star attraction at school! Mrs Breidenbach, the school’s Pastoral Lead, works with Shadow in partnership with the educational staff and trained therapists. Together, they help progress the children’s educational, social, emotional, and physical development by working with individual pupils and groups, using different strategies, such as art, reading and Lego therapy. As part of Shadow’s training, she now “meets and greets” every pupil who comes into her Pastoral

room and can follow their instructions to sit, give her paw, to shake ‘hello or goodbye’, then gently take a treat. Shadow also interacts with pupils as she walks round the school and is popular with everyone. One pupil stated, “Dogs sense when people are sad so, when Shadow senses that you might not be feeling your best, she lets you stroke her and helps to make you feel better.” If you would like more information about joining Thurlby C.P. neglected flowerbed has recently been transformed into a tribute to two very different forms of Bourne’s transport history. The makeover not only pays tribute to the glory days of the town’s motor racing past, when champion driver Graham Hill drove the Bourne-based British Racing Motors (BRM) team to the 1962 Formula 1 world championship but, being situated on the site of the former Bourne East signal box in South Road, the design also pays homage to the impact of the railway on the development of the town in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

The display was designed by Debbie Cooke, of Creative Garden Designs, and is a joint project between Bourne Town Council and The Len Pick Trust, with additional funding from the Owen Family Trust, Hall and Hall, and the BRM Association. “We are always anxious to improve the town and work regularly with the Trust who have, for a number of years helped sponsor the planters and hanging baskets in the town,” said Town Clerk, Ian Sismey. “When South Kesteven District Council relinquished maintenance of the flower bed, we approached the Trust again and they agreed something special should be created because of its prominent position on one of the main roads of the town.” At the heart of the display is a large-scale silhouette of the 1962 World Formula One title winning BRM car, known as ‘Old Faithful’. Dick Salmon and John Sismey, the two surviving team mechanics from that victory, recently paid a visit to the site. Inevitably, old memories came shooting back and Dick particularly remembered the frantic work by the team all through the night to cannibalise three engines to help rebuild the engine which went on to win the championship for Graham and the team later in the day. “Yes, we did have a small celebration after the race”, Dick and John admitted!

The laser-cut silhouette was cut in one piece by Billingboroughbased Repfab Engineering and demonstrates the advances in technology which have taken place over the years since the first train steamed into Bourne Station. Pictured here is the Bourne East signal box standing on what is now the corner of South Road and Coggles Causeway and the site of the flower bed. Can you imagine queuing there today for one of the forty or fifty trains that passed over the crossing each day and then waiting for the signalman to descend from his box to open the gates by hand?

IMPERIAL COLLEGE LONDON FOR SOME SUPER SCIENCE! On Friday November 5th, Thurlby C.P. Academy’s Year 5 and Year 6 children were lucky to experience the wonderful world of science with Oundle School’s STEM Roadshow, which was presented in collaboration with Imperial College, London, and supported by the OPEN Learning Partnership. These events are intended to inspire children and excite them using the amazing worlds of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). Aran and Ellie, two of Thurlby’s Year 6 pupils, thought that the event was wonderful, commenting,

“A scientist completed a workshop with us on astrophysics. The first experiment was to imitate the smoke rings created when a rocket blasts off, by containing smoke inside a chamber and forcefully pushing it out to create the ring. It was incredible to see! Next, he used a special camera, which could only see red light, to view the veins through his hand to show how satellites take photographs of planets in detail. We were also shown videos of failed and successful rocket landings. The whole afternoon was absolutely astonishing!’’

Legal Services in a Modern Time

t’s now twenty-two years since the turn of the century. Double and Megson, having formed in 1978, has clearly seen many changes in the last forty-four years. What is still true is that all of us need legal services now and probably always will (even if a robot tries to play the role!) It was once famously asked “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?”, a 1968 science fiction novel by Philip K. Dick. Whether a “bot” could count the issues in a legal case is a moot point. It is the communication and sensitivity that makes the difference to a client. The eye contact and reassurance count in any professional context, be it lawyer, doctor, dentist or independent financial adviser. Double and Megson believe that the provision of local legal services is best for the client. Our fee earners offer rounded legal advice, sometimes crossing different legal subjects on an integrated

basis. The firm has acted over many years for local businesses and families (sometimes three generations of one family). So, knowing the solicitor is as important as knowing the client, and vice versa. It is worrying that there have been recently, unknown persons walking the streets locally purporting to offer advice to unsuspecting parties. If, any of us need advice we should seek out those who are both regulated and insured. Our firm believes in finding out what is at the heart of a client’s instructions and acting efficiently to find a client-focused outcome. We will always offer a down-to-earth friendly approach to put clients at their ease. Great care and caution are required when considering what is said on the internet. Certainly, some benefit can be obtained from government websites but otherwise there can be significant risk.

he Bourne property market continues to ride the wave as we head towards 2022. Although softening, demand remains stronger than a year ago. Sales volumes to date in 2021 are 16% above the five-year average (Zoopla).

Despite rising inflation and likely interest rate rises, the latest forecasts from the Office for Budget Responsibility predict price growth will continue, albeit at a more sustainable level, through to 2026.

Property prices are predicted to rise by 3.2% during 2022, and there is now no sign in the forecasts of prices falling. Sales volumes may well eclipse 2007 by the year end, with sales in the region of £1.3 million in 2022/23, 8% higher than the longer-term average (2015/16 to 2019/2020). s Christmas closes in on us, and many are suffering financially after a couple of tough years, I wanted to just remind you to make sure that any electrical things you buy meet British standards. It can sometimes be tempting to buy things online that are better priced than those that are on our high street, sometimes even knowing that they are not genuine or that they may not meet British standards. I have often been asked to fit or look at electrical items that have been bought from bargain priced websites. Some of the things I have found have been dangerous; we have even written reports to help the buyer recover their money but, unfortunately, this is often unsuccessful. We have been asked to fit lights and the most basic

principles of the electrical safety regulations are not even met, and what starts as somebody trying to save some pennies ends up costing them much more when they are unable to return the item and then still have to purchase it somewhere else. This is actually the ‘best-case scenario’; the other scenario is that that item is used without any concerns being identified, and then resulting in an electric shock, or even a fire that devastates your home. We can so easily be pulled into trying to save money as expectations are so high for Christmas today, but it is much more important that you and your family stay safe. t was the late diagnosis of our elevenyear-old daughter’s bone cancer in February 2017, following twenty-three fruitless appointments over a six-month period, that prompted a desire to help people have a choice in their medical provision. You can obtain your credit report from a service such as Experian or Equifax. If there are incorrect items on your credit report, you can ask for them to be removed. If there are items that are correct, but not representative of your current financial situation (for example, an unpaid bill during a previous period of unemployment), you can also ask to add a notice of correction.

Avoid Going Over Budget Often, first-time-buyers have saved enough for their deposit but haven’t considered all the extra costs which put a strain on their budget, things such as solicitors’ fees or Stamp Duty Land Tax if the property is over the threshold.

Avoid Costly Property Problems As a first-time-buyer, you might not be aware of all the things that can go wrong with a home, and they’re not always visible. An old boiler may need to be replaced, for example, costing thousands. It can help to take someone with more experience along to viewings, but they too might miss some issues. A professional survey, though it will cost several hundred pounds to arrange, will identify any potential issues and could save you a lot of money over the long term.

SAND A sand consisting of fine rounded particles. This sand is the most common sand used in the construction industry for making renders and mortars due to its fine particle size creating a smooth easily worked product.

LIMESTONE Pure crushed Limestone. Is now widely used as a bedding layer for block paving applications where a SuDS bedding layer is required.

BALLAST Our All in Ballast is supplied in a 1000kg bulk bag and is a mixture of Sharp Sand and Gravel. Ballast is often used to make concrete.

GRAVEL A mixture of angular and rounded stones washed and passed through various screens to create aggregate. Widely used in the construction industry as a drainage medium.
