JANUARY 2022

Welcome to your January issue... So here we go into 2022 with new year’s resolutions made and high hopes for the future.

O

n behalf of our hardworking team at Discovering Magazines, I would just like to wish you all a fabulous 2022, with good health and success in whatever lies in front of you, your family, and your friends. I know many readers who see their monthly ‘Discovering’ magazine almost like an old friend, dropping by to keep them in touch with events in their town and activities to come; to keep them up to date with advice from our many contributors; and to entertain with our quizzes and competitions. Why not just settle down with a drink and relax with that friend and enjoy our offering this month? All the very best for 2022!

Claire x

At the time of writing, the final few days of 2021 are providing us sports fans with enough excitement to take us into the new year with memories to last a lifetime. No, not the mighty Posh actually winning a game, but I refer instead to the Abu Dhabi Formula One duel between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen. Final race out of twenty-two ok, but final seconds of the final lap? You couldn’t have scripted that. Let’s hope 2022 can reproduce something as exciting; how about the FIFA World Cup in Qatar, with Hamilton’s England beating Verstappen’s Netherlands on penalties in the final? Finally, a touch of sporting mirth: I always used to get caught out of position when playing in goal. I was forever being told to “think outside the box”! I was on the boundary, daydreaming and pondering about the weight of a cricket ball … then it hit me! Enjoy the read!

On the Piste?

Don’t Let Your Muscle Memory Let You Down!

W

ith many resorts hopefully reopening this season, we are all keen to get back out onto the slopes after at least one winter without any skiing or snowboarding. But will you still remember what you’re doing when you get out there or, perhaps, are you hoping that your “muscle memory” kicks in?

In previous lessons, your instructor most likely emphasised the importance of position and how to stop and turn. However, over time we are prone to becoming complacent and think we’re better than we are. After a long break from the slopes, it’s best to remind your muscles of the right technique before heading out again.

While some may think “snowplough” and “falling leaf” are like ‘riding a bike’, refreshing and repeating the correct technique will ultimately improve your muscle memory. When was the last time you had a ski or snowboard lesson? Have you ever thought about private tuition? Maintaining the correct technique makes skiing and snowboarding easier; and can also reduce muscle soreness, improve your overall ability, and make you safer on the slopes. Even the slightest adjustment to your method can give you more control over your skis and board, which in turn boosts your confidence, making your holiday the best one yet. Even as someone who has had years out on the slopes, it is always worth having a refresher lesson, and now is the best time to hone and develop these skills. Don’t have your muscle memory let you down this holiday and result in unnecessary aches and pains! Tallington Lakes Ski and Snowboard Centre offer private lessons for both skiing and snowboarding, and also run the Junior Snow School for children aged 5-11 years. For more information and to book, please call 01778 381154.

Health

A Fresh Start in 2022

A

s we head into 2022 you may be looking at alternative ways to ease the stresses of working and living in our hectic “24/7” lifestyle. Living at this fast pace can make it more difficult to cope, and so stress becomes that unseen burden that can lead you to become anxious, have panic attacks, suffer from sleeplessness, seeing things from a negative perspective, and prone to anger or even an addiction. A new year can prompt reflection with enthusiasm to make changes in your life, helping to focus your mind on areas of change. Resilience building can help eliminate stress, the main cause of many conditions today. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is a powerful tool to help you to “empty your daily stress bucket” in a calm and relaxed way, allowing you to move forward in your life in a constructive positive way and taking control of your life. I am pleased to be able to offer a free initial consultation to explain how I can help you reduce stress/anxiety, panic attacks and overcome common problems, such as: ● Stopping smoking. ● Overcoming fears and phobias. ● Confidence and self-esteem. ● Medical hypnotherapy. ● Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. ● Needle phobia

● Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. ● Sleeplessness. ● Irritable Bowel Syndrome. ● Fibromyalgia. ● Goal achievement. ● Public speaking

and much more.

Embrace life and live to your fullest potential in 2022 The consultation focuses on explaining how the brain works and how it can sometimes cause us to react to situations in a way that might not be best for us. So, if you find that you sometimes become stressed, withdrawn, feel a degree of anxiety and sleeplessness or become angry, then you may wish to pay me a visit! I am based in Bourne, Spalding and Stamford, in comfortable and warm surroundings. Hypnotherapy is completely natural, safe, and relaxing. You will remain conscious and in complete control throughout.

● Addictions. ● Disordered eating. ● Children and teens.

What are you going to change in 2022?

● Depression.

If you would like to book an appointment or find out more about hypnotherapy, contact Christine on: 0780 9690 964 or contact@beardwoodhypnotherapy.co.uk

A Shetland Winter Mystery BY MARSALI TAYLOR

HENRY FIRTH AND IAN THEASBY BOSH! are back with the ultimate money-saving, plant-based cookbook. Number one Sunday Times bestselling authors Henry and Ian know how to make outrageously tasty, super satisfying food without breaking the bank. In BOSH! on a Budget, they share over 100 delicious recipes and prove that great tasting food doesn’t have to cost the earth. Whether you’re living completely meat-free, or just looking to introduce more plant-based meals into your week, this is the money-saving cookbook for you.

It’s the dark nights in the run up to Christmas and sailing sleuth Cass Lynch’s first night on dry land is disturbed by strange noises outside her isolated cottage. Tiny footprints in the moonlit snow trail from her front door before mysteriously disappearing. Soon Cass learns others were visited by the same tiny feet in the night. It looks like ingenious local teenagers playing tricks - but what happens when festive games turn deadly? Cass soon finds out, as a schoolboy disappears, leaving only a trail of footprints into the middle of a snowy field. She’s determined to investigate but uncovering the truth will also put her in danger.

Providing Local People with Local Jobs 14

CHLOE AND HANNAH’S STORY Located just out of Bourne on South Fen Road, Polyco Healthline is a very impressive and successful business operation, fast becoming a leading provider of protection and hygiene products on the national stage. Their state-ofthe-art warehouse (covering 30,000m2 of floorspace) and laboratory testing facility is where their expert teams research and develop an enormous range of highly sought after products. Few of us in pre-pandemic days would have heard of “P.P.E.” but Polyco Healthline were an already well-established business, as an amalgamation of two other leading companies, with a combined 85 years of experience in this field. With over 200 staff employed by the company, Polyco Healthline have proven to be a very welcome source of employment in the area, and for two local young women, the opportunities offered by the business have been firmly grasped, as they both step out on their future career path. I recently had the good fortune to meet Chloe Lindsay and Hannah Baxter, both nineteen and both more than happy to share their story of how their apprenticeships have proven to be an ideal introduction for them into the commercial world. Chloe left Bourne Academy after her GCSEs in Year 11, adamant that the “university route” was not for her. Eager to enter a business where she could ideally use her affinity for mathematics and problem solving, Chloe sent an e-mail to this “fairly new firm on South Fen Road” that she’d heard someone had said something about.

Before long, Polyco Healthline had invited her in and set her on to a fifteen-month apprenticeship programme, from which she has not looked back! Her friend Hannah was also leaving her school, the Welland Academy in Stamford, in 2016, but without having gained a ‘pass’ grade in her GCSE Maths course. Rather than seeing this potential gap in her C.V. as something to hold her back, Hannah still applied to Polyco Healthline. They clearly saw something special in her and, having been encouraged to successfully re-sit her GCSE Maths, Hannah was soon able to confirm the faith her new employers had placed in her, by achieving a Distinction in her NVQ Customer Service at the end of her fifteen month apprenticeship, an achievement matched by Chloe. Both Chloe and Hannah were placed within ‘Customer Services’ for their apprenticeship. Working in ‘Stock Control’, Chloe’s remit was to communicate on an internal basis with every other department within the business, prompting her to conclude that the ‘Stock Control’ function is “the glue that holds the whole business together” - clearly an ideal starting point to see how the business operates. Hannah, meanwhile, was also in ‘Customer Services’, although her placement mainly focussed on dealing with external issues, (queries from customers for example) which gave a rather shy teenager at first the means to gain confidence in her dealings with the public.

If you’d like to find out more about working at Polyco Healthline or are interested in our internship or apprenticeship programmes take a look at the careers page on our website or keep an eye out for job alerts on our social media pages. You can also email us for details of current vacancies at people@polycohealthline.com

SHOP & SAVE As their apprenticeships came to an end, both Hannah and Chloe were interviewed to ascertain their preferred future paths in the company. Hannah is now involved in the ‘Category’ department, working on new product development, re-cycling and sustainable alternatives, a fascinating opportunity where Hannah’s creative instincts can be fully explored, and her management capabilities put to the test in the future. Chloe chose instead to join the ‘Finance’ department, where she shares with me her enthusiasm for her role, explaining all about Credit Control and the differences between ‘payables’ and ‘receivables’! This is clearly her domain, and she can see herself progressing within this part of the company in the years ahead. Both Chloe and Hannah speak most favourably of a company with a strong‘ people-centred’ ethos, a “family” where they both feel that their contributions and opinions are highly valued by all around them.

Celebrate becoming a Living Wage Accredited Employer Samantha Wright, owner of homecare provider, Wright Care at Home, explains the importance of valuing carers: What does the living wage mean to our staff? When we introduced the living wage in November last year it was heart-warming to see the response from our carers. Carers fed back that it makes them feel recognised for the roles they carry out. It gives them value and appreciation for the skills they have; often skills that have, prior to Covid-19, not been recognised in the media. Not only this, but it also gives them more financial security and relief.

Why do we pay our carers the living wage? Care is often not recognised as a skilled career; however, it is exactly that. Many people have a misconception of what being a carer is until they have first-hand experience or knowledge as to what is involved in the role. Our carers work unsociable hours, often put others before themselves, and have a real sense of responsibility in making a difference to an individual’s day. It is their face that makes a difference to someone’s

mental well-being, and this should be recognised, not just in value, but in their pay too.

Challenges in home care Following the uncertainty created by Covid-19, recruitment in the care industry has become more difficult. However, at Wright Care at Home, we have always gone above and beyond to minimise risks and have high infection control measures in place to keep our teams safe. This is something we will continue to measure and access into the future. We wanted to recognise our team for the incredible efforts and selfless acts of kindness to support our customers who were isolated from loved ones. This living wage increase is just a small token of our gratitude.

Living wage foundation The living wage foundation is a movement that has been in place for twenty years. It is a campaign set by accredited businesses who believe that a hard day’s work deserves a fair day’s pay. That’s why we are delighted to be part of this, and not only that … we pay above and beyond the living wage too! “As a small business, we are so happy to be able to do this for our employees. Our ethos is that our staff not just our customers are at the heart of the service, and we really hope this shows them our appreciation.” Wright Care at Home are recruiting following the expansion of the area to which they provide services. If you think care is your calling, please give us a call. We would love to hear from you…

Blast That Fat... For Good!!

W

The new year usually means resolutions and promises to eat healthily and exercise more regularly. hether you’re committing to home workouts while the gyms are closed or out pounding the pavements, you may find that, no matter how strict you may be in trying to sculpt your body, there are certain pockets of fat that just won’t budge. Here at Deepin Aesthetics we have the answer for you!!

Hormones, age, and our genetic makeup also determine the shape of our body, and you can’t spot-reduce fat, so even if you’re counting calories and losing fat, it may not necessarily be coming off the areas you want it to. That’s where Aqualyx treatment can help. Aqualyx works by attaching to fatty deposits and breaking them down over time. The body is then able to naturally dissolve the fat and flush it out through the lymphatic system. These fat cells are then permanently removed. The injections are best used to treat small deposits of fat such as under the chin, thighs, arms, love handles and the stomach. Results are fast and can be seen after just one treatment, but it does vary from person to person and individual treatment plans can be discussed. Book now and let’s get you started on that new year transformation.

As a 50 year old who is very nervous of needles I was pleasantly surprised by my experience. I was made to feel relaxed with full explanation of what was happening at each stage. Have had bad experiences before I felt Alistair and Julie really knew what they are talking about. I felt in safe hands and could not have wished for better services. To top it all my results are great, I will definitely be recommending Alistair and Jule to my friends."

January Blues? [ by Lucy Briggs ]

The twinkling Christmas lights are gone, our bank account may be looking a little empty, and we’re feeling bloated from copious amounts of turkey and chocolate (not to mention the booze!) How can we overcome this bleak month? Having experienced poor mental health myself, here are a few feel-good tips…

1

Do things that you enjoy. I realise that sounds pretty obvious, but I’m not just talking about binge-watching your favourite TV show or eating a bunch of snacks; I mean something that truly feeds your soul. Something wholesome and joyous. For me, it’s reading. Or drinking my morning cup of coffee in the garden. Which leads to my next point…

2 3

Get outside! Yes, I know January weather is rubbish, but there is no better feeling than coming home from a walk, out of the cold, and snuggling down with a warm drink. Such a simple way to feel accomplished and boost those endorphins.

Look after your health. As tempting as it is to hibernate until the weather warms, it is so important to take care of ourselves. What makes us feel better in the short run may not be what is best for us. Why not give “Dry January” a try? Alcohol may be a tempting short-term fix, but it is actually a depressant. It can do wonders for both our body and mind to take a break.

4

Don’t be afraid to say no. This is a tricky one! Life becomes so full of commitments and obligations, it can often feel difficult to say no, or perhaps we invent excuses. Isn’t it strange that we prioritise our physical health over our mental health? It feels acceptable to call in sick with a stomach bug, but maybe not when we’re struggling with stress or anxiety, which is equally as important.

5

Be kind. Not just to others, which is a guaranteed endorphin booster, but to ourselves! Think about how you would speak to a dear friend. Would we tell them they are fat, lazy, or not good enough? Absolutely not! ‘Journaling’ can be a real help here – making a list of things we are thankful for, or that we like about ourselves.

6

But most importantly, REACH OUT. There is absolutely no shame in asking for help from friends, family, or your GP. And if it’s urgent, the lovely Samaritans are at the end of the phone 24/7 on 116 123. Give yourself permission to look after yourself, to be kind to yourself. Here’s to a happy and healthy 2022!

MEET SHADOW, THURLBY’S “ASSIST DOG” Thurlby Community Primary Academy now have Shadow, their “assist dog”, at school every day to help their pupils with their learning and emotional needs. Shadow has been in training since November 2020, when she was only a few weeks old. She very quickly became the star attraction at school! Mrs Breidenbach, the school’s Pastoral Lead, works with Shadow in partnership with the educational staff and trained therapists. Together, they help progress the children’s educational, social, emotional, and physical development by working with individual pupils and groups, using different strategies, such as art, reading and Lego therapy. As part of Shadow’s training, she now “meets and greets” every pupil who comes into her Pastoral

room and can follow their instructions to sit, give her paw, to shake ‘hello or goodbye’, then gently take a treat. Shadow also interacts with pupils as she walks round the school and is popular with everyone. One pupil stated, “Dogs sense when people are sad so, when Shadow senses that you might not be feeling your best, she lets you stroke her and helps to make you feel better.” If you would like more information about joining Thurlby C.P. Academy, there are places available in some year groups. Please e-mail enquiries@thurlby.lincs.sch.uk.

The school also has a new Facebook page ‘Thurlby Community Primary Academy’ where you can find more information.

If you would like to visit Thurlby Academy, visitors are welcome at any time and will be sure of a very warm welcome. For more information call 01778 423311 or follow Thurlby Community Primary Academy on

Seven Marathons in Seven Days in Support of Morton CE Primary School

D

uring 2021, Meghan Brown undertook an amazing challenge to run seven marathons in seven days in support of our school. Meghan’s son Harry (6) is a Year 2 pupil at the school, and she is a member of the school’s PTA.

Pupils at the school took part in their own mini marathons with each class meeting the challenge to run a collective marathon on the school field. Meghan’s first marathon began at the school and her final one ended there too, with the children of the school running with her over the final metres. Her varied routes took her around several of the villages of South Lincolnshire. “I have always been a keen runner, often running fifty-plus miles per week and, even though as a mother of two young boys and with a full-time job meaning life gets pretty busy, I always find time to run. From my teenage years, running has given me confidence and helped me maintain a healthy lifestyle, not to mention it is great for mental health.” “I set myself the challenge to run seven marathons in seven days to 28

Bourne

raise money for Harry’s school due to the pandemic and schools being underfunded, and I am overwhelmed with the generous donations that people have made. This has been the toughest challenge I have ever set myself, but it has also been the most rewarding.” The marathon challenge has been supported by incredible fundraising by Meghan and the pupils and parents of the school. Meghan started a ‘Go Fund Me’ page in March as she started her training and with many very generous donations, it currently stands at £1,220. In addition, generous parents and family members supported their own individual children in their mini-marathon challenge and the school total is just over £1,000! Our PTA fundraising group have been very busy since the beginning of the school year. This additional income will support their fundraising as they work to improve the outdoor activities available for children during playtime. We are very grateful for Meghan’s inspirational effort and the support of our families. Mr G. Trafford: Executive Headteacher

Mayor

Words from the Mayor

COUNCILLOR PAUL FELLOWS

One of my main memories of 2021 will be around ‘cancelled events’ for reasons we are all so very familiar with.

A

ll of us were prevented from doing things we would have expected to do, and we all had to adapt and, in our own very particular way, ‘go with the flow’.

Even though big events such as the Classic Car Show and Bourne Festival could not happen, as the year progressed other community events, organised by the Lions and Elsea Park Trust did. The Town Council and Events Team were determined to organise a ‘Picnic in the Park’ and invite Bourne onto the Wellhead to be roundly entertained and bring a picnic along for good measure. After a false start, and despite worse weather than that which we had earlier postponed for, people rallied round, happy to be ‘out’ and together again. When Judi and I were together in North Street on the day of the Lights Switch-on and Christmas Market, in what seemed like the middle of a force nine gale, I’d be a liar if I didn’t wonder why we hadn’t cancelled that event as

well! But we didn’t and, as I looked over North Street at the young and not-so-young families who’d come out to be together at the magical moment the lights burst into life, it was wonderful to be a part of it. Bourne came together to achieve what so many other towns didn’t. Well done to all who made it happen and to everyone that came to join them. Bourne Town Council has worked tirelessly to make our town even better, taking over the responsibility for certain facilities in the town. New and improved play facilities have recently been installed in Pinewood Close and Northfields. A huge thank you is due to ‘Gary’s Gardens’ who have constantly worked, and continue to work for us, to improve our environment. Looking forward to 2022, we are planning to join the national celebrations in June for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in a big way, and are inviting all community groups, parts of the town, and individuals to get involved in any way that they can. The community that Bourne is, and is growing into, is brilliant, and is something we should all help to build upon and be proud of. Let’s all do our bit to make the new year both happy and as good as we are able.

lcoholic beverages, from beers, lagers and ciders, through wines and liqueurs, to spirits and more, have been consumed and enjoyed for many, many centuries.

By Trevor Langle y

The whisky industry is at present doing very well indeed. With the UK and export markets increasing, whisky, most definitely, can be said to have ‘stood the test of time’. As societies become more affluent, then the requirement for whisky grows, being something of a status symbol, clearly giving signs of a higher lifestyle. For example, it is reported that in China, people are enjoying Scotch whisky in western-style bars, and it has become a growing trend. My quest, on this occasion, was to locate whiskies which I find interesting and satisfying. John Crabbie & Co have been purveyors of wine and spirits since 1801. John Crabbie and his family owned a lot of property in Leith, north of Edinburgh, and exported around the globe. Providing fine, single malt Scotch whiskies was John Crabbie’s objective in life. Several whiskies are within the Crabbie range. Yardhead Single Malt is so named because of the original site in Leith. The Crabbie twelve-year-old Speyside Single Malt whisky is hugely popular and produced utilising bourbon casks, to great advantage. The bouquet is most enticing, and the smooth, well-balanced mouthfeel continues the delight, with an excellent body that has superb depth and a richness that follows for the palate’s pleasure, having fruity and vanilla overtones. Other Crabbie whiskies include eight-year-old and twelve-year-old productions, plus fifteen-yearold Highland Single Malt. Forty-year-old Speyside Single Malt (44.5% vol) and fifty-year-old Islay Single Malt (46.5% vol) are destined for the ‘top table’, most certainly, I suspect. Stockists of Crabbie whiskies include supermarkets, independent wines/ drinks retailers, bars, restaurants, and they can be purchased online, too. 44 32

• Wrap each leek in a slice of ham, then arrange, side-by-side, in a large baking dish. Mix the cheddar in a bowl with the mustard and crème fraîche, until well combined. Season to taste. Students Donate Sixty Christmas Hampers to Local Day Care Centre

S

tudents at Bourne Academy have joined together to give their season’s greetings by creating Christmas hampers for elderly people at the Butterfield Community Friendship Hub in Bourne, and which were due to be delivered on December 15th.

This is an annual tradition for the school where students in every form donate an item into their own specially decorated Christmas hamper, ranging from chocolates, biscuits, tea bags, coffee, hot chocolate, marmalade, jam, and tinned food, to toiletries, socks, and festive items. When all these small items come together in one hamper, it becomes a very generous and much appreciated gift. It has been a very difficult time for many people and last year this had to be cancelled due to the Covid restrictions, so the school have been very much looking forward to providing some festive cheer once again. The Butterfield Centre do an amazing job providing companionship for elderly people and those at risk of loneliness and social isolation. Just some of the essential services they provide in the community include coffee and chat sessions, meals on wheels, domestic cleaning,

gardening, lunch club and the hire of mobility aids and equipment. Clare Ashton, the hub coordinator at The Butterfield, said, “We would like to thank all the students and staff at Bourne Academy for their generous donations. We are extremely lucky to have the support of our local community.”

historian John White. ‘His Majesty’ will be in contemplative mood in the year 1542, reflecting on recent turbulent events, including the annulment of his marriage to Katharine. The performance will be both in person at the Cathedral and also live streamed to allow more people to take part.

The centrepiece of the Festival, which includes events for all ages on a Tudor theme, is an audience with King Henry VIII, in the form of performance

New Defibrillator for Town Centre. The Len Pick Trust and Bourne Town Council have joined together to put a decommissioned telephone kiosk in the town centre to a new use by installing a defibrillator in it. Pictured are the Mayor, Councillor Paul Fellows, and his wife, Lady Mayoress Judith, together with Chairman of the Len Pick Trust, David Bower, in front of the kiosk.

David said, “We are delighted to have been able to work with the Town Council to utilise this redundant kiosk to house the defibrillator. The Trust has long had a policy of providing these machines in our area and when the Town Clerk told us that the kiosk would be coming available, we jumped at the chance of using such a prominent position. Anyone can use the machine in an emergency, as it always gives clear spoken instructions, so you don’t need training to use it. The defibrillator detects the heart’s rhythm, and it won’t deliver a shock unless one is needed.” Paul said, “Once again, we are extremely grateful to Len Pick and his legacy for its help in providing this facility for the benefit of all”.

NEW PLAY AREAS UNDER CONSTRUCTION Bourne Town Council have been pressing for two play areas to be revitalised for over three years and their persistence has finally paid off.

The play areas at Pinewood Close and Northfields have been left fallow for the past few years despite protests from residents and the Town Council. The play areas under the control of South Kesteven District Council are now under renewed construction, thanks to ‘Section 106’ monies earmarked for Bourne. The Mayor of Bourne, Cllr Paul Fellows, was on hand to see the commencement of work and thanked contractor RJ Warren for their efforts in the appalling weather conditions. Both play areas were expected to be completed before Christmas.

Liberty Partnership are delighted to launch

‘The Liberty Lunch’ to celebrate our community champions and those people that go the extra mile

BY RICHARD ASH CHARTERED FINANCIAL PLANNER AND DIRECTOR You may know one of those ‘champions’ who always helps where they can or goes that extra mile for a neighbour, a stranger or a friend, and if you do then we would like to hear from you. Our plan is to offer a modest reward of lunch out at a local pub, diner, coffee shop or eatery up to the value of £100. We would ask that this offer is taken up locally to support our fantastic local businesses. We will select a monthly ‘champion’ from any nominations we receive. When contacting us, we would ask that you say who they are, how you feel they have positively contributed towards our community, and provide their contact information, having asked their permission to do so. Please see this as being a good thing, something to celebrate, a way in which we at Liberty Partnership can celebrate our community. Sadly, we will not be able to recognise everyone, which we hope you all understand.

Looking Back and Looking Forward

I

BY COLEEN EVERITT, ALTO ELECTRICAL LIMITED

t is now that time of year when I do a lot of reflection; I like to look back over the year and see what I have done successfully and what I have done that has not been quite as successful, to help me learn and grow as a person, and as a business owner.

This month, I want to reach out to sympathise with those who have struggled over the past almost two years. People never want to tell you if they are struggling, especially those in business. I understand, nobody wants you to think that their business has any issues, but all businesses have challenges at some point. It’s a rollercoaster, and this past year has been a ride and a half! I know we have had our issues, and at times it has felt like it would never end! So, I wanted to send people who have owned a business over lockdown, strength, and hope. As a business owner and employer who followed the team and then returned to work through lockdown with additional measures in place, it has been a challenge to keep up with the constantly changing guidance and restrictions; making sure you put any measures in place to keep the team and our clients safe; the HR and all the administration; and keeping up with the constantly changing diary. We had to change our whole system to a paperless one. We also had to make our engineers and clients safer, something that is a challenge when executed, even when you don’t need to do it at short notice! As a mum, I wanted to reach out to all of those who have had to home-school throughout lockdown, to those whose children have additional needs and have been struggling,

Domestic

silently, trying to get through with no support. There is no other option but to keep going. To those that have had to work whilst being a teacher and have ‘painted a smile on’ for Zoom whilst your ‘house falls down around your ears’. To all you new mums with lockdown babies, who cry if anybody looks at them because they’re not used to seeing other people. Both my sister, Kay, who runs the office, and I, had babies just after lockdown started, babies that were unable to meet for months, and neither of whom have ever been to a baby group. To all of you who have had Covid; to those that lost loved ones and to those still struggling and trying to recover but are feeling flat. Our family all had Covid at the same time, and whilst my littlest ended up in hospital, he bounced back very quickly. It took me a long time to feel normal again. 2022 owes us all big time, so please enjoy this year, and make sure that you make up for all the memory-making that has been missed out on. Happy New Year!

Property News

New Year, New Agent?

W

ith the Christmas period over and a new year begun, focus has returned to the property market, for those considering moving. With many new buyers registering their requirements and a flurry of new properties coming to the market, Christmas can no longer be used as an excuse for a lack of interest. Despite Christmas, Newton Fallowell had an extremely busy and successful December, which is being carried through into January. Many properties were sold, including a few within days of advertising, and a couple that required no advertising at all! We found that buyers were in fact registering their details prior to the new year, to ensure they were the first to hear about any new properties due to come to the market. This included our Boxing Day launch, which provided tremendous results. We launched a variety of homes to the market, where they benefited from fantastic online exposure prior to the new year. Whilst the new year presents the benefit of many new buyers, it also presents a much higher level of competition on the market. Therefore, it is

imperative to ensure that your home stands out, or you could risk becoming ‘stale’ on the market. Buyers, new and old, will maintain the ability to see the date your home was launched to the market. If your home had already been on the market for a period of time in 2021, they may begin to ask the question, ‘Why has this home not already sold?’ Here at Newton Fallowell, we believe it is important to review a home’s marketing and interest regularly, to ensure it does not become ‘stale’. We recommend that, if your home has not been receiving a good level of interest, you understand why this is and what your selling agent is doing to increase activity. Are they being pro-active and crossselling from similar homes they have available? What are the reasons potential purchasers are providing for not viewing your home? If you cannot answer the above questions, perhaps a change in selling agent could be worthwhile. With a combination of a new set of photos/marketing details, as well as a pro-active agent who will provide you with answers to the above questions, you will benefit from one of the most important periods of the year for the property market. If you believe your home needs a fresh lease of life, then please do not hesitate to contact us on 01778 422567, so that we can provide this for you and help get you moving.

Your Garden

A

January Gardening Tips fter the indulgences of the festive season, a bit of winter digging will blow the cobwebs away and get you back into shape!

Well-rotted manure or organic material can be added to the soil surface, and it will become incorporated naturally. Also, a good idea when you are digging is to apply lime to the surface at 100g per square metre (3oz per square yard) especially where you grew brassicas the year before. Getting the soil prepared now will save time feeding later in the year and will often enhance crop growth and yield. Rhubarb can be forced, using pots or an upturned bucket, or even a pile of straw, making sure any holes are covered to completely cut out the light. What could be tastier than pale pink sticks of rhubarb, harvested in late February? You could start a bean trench by digging down about 60cm, line it with newspaper or shredded cardboard, then start filling it with your organic kitchen waste. Each time you add a batch of waste cover with a layer of soil: continue until the trench is full and leave it to rot down. This will provide nutrients and help retain moisture. Towards the end of the month, seed potatoes should be available, and you can start chitting them ready for planting: put them rose side uppermost and use old egg boxes or seed trays.

March Bourne

Weather permitting, there are a few jobs that can be tackled at the allotment or vegetable plot: • Clean up your plot by disposing of all the damaged and rotten crops: most of the overwintering vegetables will suffer if the conditions are wet. Also remove any leaves as these are a perfect hide-out for slugs and snails. Your shed or greenhouse, tools, trays, and pots could be cleaned too, ready for the new year. • Prune apple and pear trees, but not stone fruits such as cherry and damson; they should be summer pruned. • Plant bare-rooted trees and bushes. • Protect plants from cold and check stakes and ties. • Draw the soil up around the stalks of cabbages and winter cauliflowers to just under the first set of leaves. Check over Brussels sprouts and sprouting broccoli and support them with a strong stake to prevent them from being blown over in high winds. • In non-freezing weather, shallots can be planted. Shallots take longer to grow than onions, but if planted now, should be ready earlier in the summer. • Any stored fruit and vegetables need checking for rotten or damaged produce and evidence of mice. Here’s to a year of successful gardening!

Will & Probate Services

Are You A Trustee? Urgent Action Required!

ADVICE FROM NICK ASH, MANAGING DIRECTOR WILL AND PROBATE SERVICES

Everyone needs to read this because you may be a trustee without realising it.

T

owards the end of 2021, the government confirmed that the registration of all trusts would become compulsory. New trusts need to be registered with HMRC within six months of being set up. That’s all pretty straightforward and will become a part of the services that we and firms like us provide. The issue, and it is a big one, is that all existing trusts need to be registered with HMRC before September 1st, 2022. You may not know if you are a trustee, so here are some of the most likely scenarios: ● Your parents have put their property in a trust.

This might be called a home protection plan, an asset protection trust, a family protection plan. To be honest, they have hundreds of different names.

● One of your parents passed away and their

share of the property went into trust. This could be a discretionary trust, a protective property trust or a life interest trust.

● You have gifted some money to a child to buy

a property and have a deed of trust in place. Many people have used a Deed of Trust to protect the contribution of the “bank of mum and dad”. These will need to be registered.

● You are managing funds on behalf of a

disabled child. You are a trustee and probably need to register.

● You are saving money in a specific account for

children or grandchildren. It could be that you are acting as a trustee and will need to register.

These are not the only situations where your trust must be registered with HMRC; you may have investments in trust or have done some of your Inheritance Tax planning by using trusts, and there are many more. If you need to talk to someone about registering your trust, then give us a call on 01778 252301 and we will advise you of your options. If you don’t act, then HMRC have also announced a penalty regime that will apply to everyone who doesn’t register their trust by the deadline!

FRIENDLY DC QUALITY, SERVICE ACCOUNTANCY

FOR many, a new year signals change – and that could mean a new car, saving money and efforts to be kinder to the environment. With an electric car or van, you can achieve this, especially when it has been made even more affordable by a government grant towards a home charging 15:38 point at your own home. With increasing consumer demand, greater availability of vehicles and government support, sales of electric vehicles are growing strongly in parallel to the development of UK charging point infrastructure. Consumers have until the end of March 2022 to apply for a government grant to help them make the change. The Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme (EVHS) is a grant that provides a 75% contribution to the cost of one charge point and its installation. A grant cap is set at £350 (including VAT) per installation. The main requirement is that a person owns, leases, or has ordered a qualifying vehicle and has dedicated offstreet parking at their property. You can also apply for two charge points at the same property if you have two qualifying vehicles. The grant works by a customer choosing an EVHS installer to install their charge point, who then applies on the customer’s behalf. The installer will bill the customer for the price of the installation, less the grant amount they have applied for. Customers cannot apply directly for an EVHS grant. Safe Local Trades have members who are Office for Low Emissions Vehicles (OLEV) authorised installers and can apply for the government grant on behalf of customers in and around Peterborough. For a reliable and professional service, contact them on www.safelocaltrades.com and search the dropdown trades box for Electric Vehicle Charging.

Mortgage Advice

Moving Home

B

ADVICE FROM LUCA PALUMBO, MORTGAGE & PROTECTION CONSULTANT

uying a property is usually the single most expensive purchase we’ll ever make, but what may surprise you is that, on average, we only spend around twentyfive minutes viewing a property before we decide to buy it!

1

To make the most out of your viewing, consider the following questions:

How much interest has the property attracted? If you’re the first potential buyer to view, you’re in a strong position to make an offer. If there have been several other viewings already, you might have some competition. Find out if there have been any previous offers that were rejected, and if the current owner is open to offers below the asking price. Remember that some negotiation is considered normal in the buying process.

like a garden shed, you’ll need to make that request. Similarly, if you’re buying a newly built property, find out if the developer will include the ‘white goods’ or if you’ll need to buy your own.

2

4 5

3

6

When is the property available? If you’re buying a newly built property, find out when the construction work is due to be completed so you can move in. If it’s a previously owned property, you’ll need to wait for the current owner to find a new home. This creates a chain, which can add time to the transaction and cause problems if other sales fall through. It’s often unavoidable, though, unless the property is inherited, or the owner is moving abroad.

What is included in the sale? There are no set rules regarding what a seller will leave in the property when they move out. So, you should establish this before making an offer. If all the ‘white goods’ (fridge, washing machine etc) are included, you might be able to make a higher offer. If there are items you don’t want to remain in the property,

Which way does the property face? It’s helpful to know which way the property is oriented, so you know if you’ll be able to enjoy the garden or balcony in the evening, or if the bedrooms are well lit in the mornings.

What are the neighbours like? With a newly built property, you won’t have the chance to find out about your future neighbours in advance. But, if you’re moving into a previously owned property, you should find out from the current owner if they’ve had any problems with their neighbours, such as noise.

What are the running costs? When you buy a home, the current owner or developer will provide you with an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) that will rate the property’s energy efficiency and likely running costs. Newly built properties are usually cheaper to run. With a previously owned property, ask the owner how much they spend on bills to get a clear idea of how much your monthly expenditure will be.

*Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage*

Legal Corner

The Importance of Legal Representation in Family Matters

I

WORDS FROM RICHARD WOOD

n a new year everyone is optimistic. We all hope that a safe, prosperous, and happy new year can be enjoyed by all. Sadly, however, it is not always possible.

If a relationship breaks down, there are financial and child-related matters to resolve. There might need to be a separation agreement or a divorce. Everything depends on the circumstances. Most solicitors who do Family Law are members of a group called “Resolution” (trading name of The Solicitors Family Law Association). The main ambition of the group is to seek an amicable approach. Whilst not always possible, and a solicitor will exercise their experience on how to put across points, an amicable approach can reduce stress, misunderstandings, and costs. Saving unnecessary difficulty is important, especially in time spent and the fees involved. Sometimes, a relationship can be saved by a referral to “Relate”, the charity that offers

relationship support. If it cannot, the parties that do best are those who focus on keeping the work and disagreements to a minimum. Some of the issues are complex and solicitors are well experienced in dealing with such matters. Sadly, Legal Aid is now a thing of the past, except with one or two rare matters. If a client does some of the work and the solicitor does the rest, this separating who is responsible for what aspect of the work can save money. It is called “unbundling” and is being recommended by the Solicitors Regulatory Authority. Representation, especially in certain financial and child-related matters can be crucial to avoid costly misunderstandings. Some clients benefit from mediation, but it is not the answer for everyone. Costs are still incurred and, where there is a dispute or particular difficulty, the matter must proceed to Court. Reconciliation should never be discounted as an option though.

Burns Night Supper

at Peterborough Cathedral on Saturday January 22nd

A

re you connected to Scotland? Are you a fan of the poet Rabbie Burns? Are you free on January 22nd? Do you love eating and dancing? Then this is a Cathedral event for you!

Peterborough Cathedral is preparing to host another of its traditional Burns Night Suppers. The Scottish flag already hangs inside the Cathedral, both as a symbol of one of its patron saints, St Andrew, and also to mark the place where Mary, Queen of Scots was buried in 1587, before her removal to Westminster Abbey in 1612. The event, (in the transepts and under the central tower of the Cathedral) includes a three-course meal (with haggis, neeps and tatties, naturally) complete with the traditional recitations, bagpipes and whisky toasts. This will be followed by a fabulous ceilidh with a caller and live music from the famous Cambridgeshire ceilidh band, Frog on a Bike. There

will also be a bar selling alternatives to Scotch! With guests invited to wear a kilt, or something tartan as part of their outfit, this promises to be an evening to remember. Tickets are £50 per person including the meal and whisky for the toasts. You can order a vegetarian option as you book. Please wear flat shoes for dancing. Covid guidelines will apply. Maria Elsey, Head of Operations at Peterborough Cathedral, and herself a loyal Scot, said, “I can’t think of a better place to hold a Burns’ Night Supper! The Cathedral is such a beautiful and historic setting, and the evening will have all the traditional elements that we Scots expect on this special night. I hope that many people will come and enjoy the event, regardless of whether or not they have Scottish connections.” With hearty thanks to sponsors Ingleton Wood and Eddisons.
