Welcome to your March issue...
T
his is the month, of course, when we mothers are allotted by our partners and families a full day of doing nothing, a whole day in which we are spoilt rotten with flowers, chocolates, and perfume (especially if someone had actually ‘underdone’ the Valentine’s Day gift-fest last month!) Tell me if you think I’m dropping too big a hint here!
Seriously, we do not expect the earth on Mother’s Day. It’s just lovely to get some recognition, whatever form that may take, for all our multi-tasking abilities and for our level-headedness and calm when the waters of the family home may sometimes get a little choppy! It was the American novelist, Peter De Vries, who suggested that “a mother’s role is to deliver children obstetrically once, and by car forever after.” How true! Enjoy your day, girls, and enjoy this month’s issue.

Well, “Dry January” came and went, and “Damp February” followed.
Thurlby CP Academy.
Celebrations might now be more likely, because not only does this month include Mother’s Day on March 27th, but six days earlier, we can all celebrate World Poetry Day as well. So, to combine the two, here is perhaps the shortest poem ever written, but whilst it lacks volume, there’s no doubting its heartfelt message, that of thanking our wonderful mothers for everything they do for us... “Ta, Ma!” On a personal note, there’s one “new” mum this time round, as our daughter-in-law, Jade, gave birth to Darcy on February 7th (with a little help from our son, Rob!) So, while we’re on the subject, I used to think the word ‘Caesarean’ began with the letter ‘S’ but when I looked in the dictionary, it was in the ‘C’ section. Don’t forget: Clocks forward on March 27th! Enjoy the read.

Mother's Day Mother’s Day is celebrated in a variety of ways in different countries and at different times of the year. Although the way it is celebrated may vary from country to country, the importance of a mother and the debt of gratitude to her that we all owe is recognized by us all, wherever we may be. “Mothering Sunday” is celebrated on the fourth Sunday of Lent. In medieval times, when the children of poor families would often be sent to rich people’s homes to work as domestic help, these youngsters would collect flowers to give to their mother and bake special cakes which they called “Mothering cakes”. Nowadays, it is celebrated by presenting gifts, flowers and organising meals for the family. In Germany, Mother’s Day is called “Muttertag” and is celebrated on the second Sunday of May except during Pentecost when it falls on the first Sunday. During World War II, Mother’s Day took on a political significance. Mothers were praised for supplying children for the ‘Fatherland’ and awarded medals based on how many they produced. After the war, the relevance of Mother’s Day changed, and people now gave cards, gifts, and flowers. On the second Sunday of May, Australians gift various kinds of flowers to their mother, particularly carnations and chrysanthemums. Besides mothers, grandmothers and aunts also receive gifts. Many organisations throughout Australia also arrange events to raise money on this day. Again, in Japan, the second Sunday in May and again, mothers are showered with beautiful carnations throughout the country. Children traditionally show their love for their mothers by drawing pictures of their mother for them, with art competitions organised too. Mother’s Day in France is known as “Fete des Meres” and is celebrated in early June or at the end of May, in accordance with Pentecost. Mothers can relax in the knowledge that their children provide meals and gifts for them, besides reciting poems. Like many other countries, the day of celebration in Brazil is observed on the second Sunday in May and is a commercial holiday. Church gatherings and special performances by children take place, alongside large barbecues, where dads can perform their traditional cooking duties, while mums relax!

The Locked Room
Otherlands
A new Dr Ruth Galloway mystery.
An epic, exhilarating journey into deep time, showing us the Earth as it used to exist, and the worlds that were here before ours.
BY THOMAS HALLIDAY
BY ELLY GRIFFITHS
Ruth is in London clearing out her mother’s belongings when she makes a surprising discovery: a photograph of her Norfolk cottage taken before Ruth lived there. Her mother always hated the cottage, so why does she have a picture of the place? The only clue is written on the back of the photo: ‘Dawn, 1963’. Ruth returns to Norfolk but then Covid rears its ugly head. DCI Nelson, meanwhile, is investigating a series of deaths. When he links the deaths to an archaeological discovery, he breaks curfew to visit Ruth. She is chatting to her neighbour, Zoe, whom he remembers as a carer who was once tried for murdering her employer.
Travelling back in time, palaeobiologist Thomas Halliday immerses us in a series of ancient landscapes, from the mammoth steppe in Ice Age Alaska to the lush rainforests of Eocene Antarctica, with its colonies of giant penguins, to Ediacaran Australia, where the moon is far brighter than ours today. We visit the birthplace of humanity; we hear the crashing of the highest waterfall the Earth has ever known; and we watch as life emerges again after the asteroid hits, and the age of the mammal dawns.
Only then her name wasn’t Zoe. It was Dawn!
House of Sky and Breath
BY SARAH J. MAAS
The sequel to the #1 New York Times bestseller. Sarah J. Maas’s sexy, groundbreaking ‘Crescent City’ series continues with this second instalment. Bryce Quinlan and Hunt Athalar have made a pact. As they process the events of the spring, they will keep things … platonic … until the Solstice. But can they resist when the crackling tension between them is enough to set the whole of Crescent City aflame?
The Mapmakers
BY TAMZIN MERCHANT
Return to the spellbinding world of Cordelia Hatmaker in this magical sequel to “The Hatmakers”. Perfect for fans of “Nevermoor”, “A Pinch of Magic” and “Harry Potter”. Ever since Cordelia discovered the hidden map in her father’s precious telescope, she’s been searching the 6

streets of London by starlight and trying to uncover its secrets. Mother’s Day at Cherryholt Mobility
With Mother’s Day approaching, why not treat your mum or mother-in-law to a pair of our Sandpiper slippers? Sandpiper is a carefully designed range of comfort footwear for wide feet or people with problem toes.
Sensitive Feet As we get older, our feet change shape, and we often lose some of the natural padding from the bottom of our feet. Many conditions such as oedema, diabetes, rheumatoid and osteoarthritis, neurological and vascular disorders or kidney and heart disease can often be identified by early warning signs as symptoms in the feet.
Some problems with feet develop through illness and some as a result of poorly fitted shoes. So, treat the feet of a loved one this Mother’s Day!

Legal Corner
Happy Mother’s Day from Double and Megson
M
WORDS FROM RICHARD WOOD
other’s Day is very important to all of us, as we remember the wonderful things that our mothers have done through the years. In the legal profession, we receive instructions from mothers in a range of different situations. On occasions, it is in happy times when clients are seeking to protect themselves such as in wills and Lasting Powers of Attorney; at other times it may be in more difficult circumstances, such as disputes about arrangements for children, or concerns over care which may crop up. Families are at the heart of what our mothers stand for. Our firm assists clients in all types of legal matters concerning the family. Double and Megson have a down-to-earth approach to legal matters and our staff are friendly and approachable. Central to rural practice is our care for our clients, many of whom provide us with repeat instructions over different generations. So, we do get to know you and your business.
We have often said, “Our business is managing yours”. Not only do we get to know the mothers and the fathers but often the children too. It is important that all clients, and that includes our mothers, understand their legal rights, and have confidence in local solicitors who are regulated and insured. Our firm has been in Bourne for nearly forty-four years now which is a long time within the community. Many families have sought our advice and continue to do so. It is important to protect our loved ones and our interests, especially in a litigious world where legal documents create certainty in uncertain times. Finally, the last four decades have seen the wealth of many of our clients increase, especially as property values have gone up. This, of course, makes good legal advice very important to the families involved.

Ageing Gracefully with Botox Botox, (full name Botulinum toxin) is the most effective and well-known procedure known to reduce your aesthetic age.
W
hen I reached forty-five, I suddenly noticed lines appearing that I had never noticed before … on my forehead, at the side of my eyes and in the area between my nose and my eyes, as a result of my frowning.
Botox injections are noted primarily for the ability to relax the muscles in your face to smooth out lines and wrinkles, giving an all-over smoother complexion. They are also known for treating conditions such as excessive sweating and to prevent chronic migraines. The injections are relatively safe so long as they are carried out by an experienced medical professional and, with Alistair being a registered pharmacist for over twenty-six years, you know you are in safe hands. It is important that the injections are placed precisely, in order to avoid sideeffects such as a droopy eye or worse. We have heard many horror stories of it being administered incorrectly or of “Black Market Botox” being used, because it is a cheaper option, such as “Botulax”, with ladies being scarred for life and being left with painful lumps across their faces. Here, at Deepin Aesthetics, we only use Boccouture which is a fully licensed product which can only be supplied to fully trained and licensed practitioners. Boccouture usually begins working one to three days after treatment and, depending on the area, the effect can last up to three months or longer. To maintain the effect, regular followup injections will be needed about every three months. Why don’t you come and see us for a free consultation and let’s get you ageing gracefully?

Pupils Put a Valentine’s Smile on the Faces of Wright Care at Home Customers and Carers The wonderful pupils of Edenham CE Primary School and Edenham Red Deer Rangers Pre-school went the extra mile in February and created Valentine’s Day cards for all the customers and carers of Wright Care at Home.
W
right Care at Home predominantly support an elderly customer base, to remain independent within their own homes. The last two years have really shown how our community comes together and, as the ethos of the company is to promote and maintain this, it was a lovely thoughtful way of doing so.
our community and customers to feel part of where they live and to be delivered a high standard of care. I wanted Wright Care at Home to be based on family values and this was just one example of how we go above and beyond to make a difference every day. Several of our customers are writing thank you notes to the children and mentioned how delighted they were. It really gave an array of smiles!”
The children of Samantha Davis-Wright (founder and owner) and Sarah Poulton (Care Manager) attend these groups and it was their idea to do something for their customers that initiated the lovely gesture. Angela, the Room Manager of the nursery at Edenham, was delighted to help and she expressed how much all the children had enjoyed creating the cards. The baby room, nursery room and pre-school room all took part, and had the chance to really explore their artistic sides. The children then delivered the cards to Wright Care at Home, where the carers had the pleasurable task of delivering them all on Valentine’s Day. One card was even delivered by Ralph Poulton, the son of the Care Manager, and this made the customers’ day. Our carers were not forgotten either. The pupils of Edenham Primary School all made individualised cards, signed by them, to every member of our care team. It really touched the hearts of our team and, after all the work carers have been doing over the last two years, this was the perfect touch! The children were really given an insight into the role of a home care worker and what they do from day to day, something which we wanted to instill to our future generations. Samantha Davis-Wright commented, “When I first set up the company, keeping compassion at the heart of the service was my main goal. I wanted 20

Our children have enjoyed using their own creative imaginations to design and make the Valentine’s cards and send their own very best Valentine’s wishes to everyone. Phobias & Fears
T
here are many phobias that we can suffer from, the most common being fear of spiders, needles, heights, public spaces, public speaking and flying. The intense fear we feel means we spend a lot of time avoiding certain things or situations, and our world becomes smaller and smaller as we stop enjoying doing some of the things we used to do. A phobia is defined as a persistent fear of an object or situation in which the sufferer is compelled to go to great lengths to avoid certain situations. The fear is typically disproportional to the actual danger posed, often being recognized as irrational. There are, in the main, two types of phobias. There is the simple phobia where a person reacts negatively when they encounter the thing that causes fear, for example dentists, needles, flying or spiders. Then there is the complex phobia which causes fear and anxiety continually.
“Fear can make a bee seem like an elephant” One example is “emetophobia” (a fear of being sick) and considered to be one of the most common phobias in the world. It can affect the sufferer in ways such as not wanting to collect their children from school in case that child is feeling ill, or maybe even putting off becoming pregnant because of the fear of sickness, or even not having medical treatments.
“Too many of us are not living our dreams because we are living our fears” Another complex phobia is “social phobia” (a fear of social situations, such as weddings, public speaking or simply going out to dinner with people - even if they’re friends!) Frequently, people with a social phobia have a fear of embarrassing themselves or of being humiliated in public. The human mind is an amazing thing; undoubtedly, the most powerful and resourceful problem-solving device in the known universe. However, our minds have developed as part of an evolutionary process, and our mind contains powerful tools for learning and dealing with danger. In our modern lives where these “fight, flight or freeze” responses are generally less useful, strong behavioural responses or fears can nevertheless be set up. It is usually when we are stressed or anxious these primitive parts of the brain can sometimes overreact and set up patterns of fear or thought that you find difficult or impossible to control. The good news is that Solution Focused Hypnotherapy helps with all these different types of phobias, allowing you to feel free to live a normal life again. Mental Health How Can I Help? [ by Lucy Briggs ]
Did you know that one in four of us will suffer from a mental health issue at one point in our lives? Every single person will know someone who has experienced the struggle.
E 1
veryone’s experience is unique and different, yet there are a few easy things that every one of us can do to try and help those around us.
Listen: If someone is struggling, it can be almost instinctive to say things like, “Things will get better”, or “Cheer up, it could be worse”. Although we may think we’re being helpful, sentiments such as these can cause our friends and family to feel misunderstood. Think about how you might talk to someone who had a physical illness. We would never dream of telling them to ‘snap out of it’. We would most likely offer them support, kindness, and space to explore their feelings. Why should we treat mental health issues any differently?
2
Ask how you can help: A phrase as simple as “Is there anything I can do to help?” can go a long way. Somebody suffering from anxiety may appreciate company while doing the weekly shop. Somebody suffering from depression may appreciate going for a walk and a chat. Everybody is different, and what might work for you won’t necessarily work for others. Simply asking can often be the
26 60

gateway to a very helpful conversation.
3
Don’t treat them any differently: If a loved one tells you that they have been diagnosed with a mental health issue, and perhaps they are taking new medication or seeing a therapist, it can be an incredibly scary time for them. Many people suffering from mental health conditions fear being misunderstood. I know that when I have struggled in my past, I have really appreciated the normal things, like laughing along to a favourite TV show with my family or having a chat about something completely unrelated to my illness. They are still the same person; they are just having a tough time.
4
Look after yourself: Be sure to not neglect how you are feeling and be kind to yourself. There are plenty of resources on the Mind website (www.mind.org.uk) that I would highly recommend for those supporting a friend, family member, or co-worker, and of course for those suffering themselves.
You never know what someone else is going through. A little kindness can go a very long way. Take care of yourselves!

Hygge Coffee House:
European Cool in Bourne’s Crown Walk!
C
allum and Zoe Chapman are creating a notable first for Bourne with the word “Hygge” about to appear on the sign above their newly refurbished premises in Crown Walk. Collins English Dictionary defines the word as "a concept, originating in Denmark, of creating cosy and convivial atmospheres that promote wellbeing." A local couple who have been in Bourne for five years, former archaeologist Callum and wife Zoe, who managed the family-run stove installation business, decided to change their career paths with the arrival of their two young daughters. The prospect of creating a coffee house in the
town with an emphasis on a cosy, friendly, ‘home from home’ atmosphere proved irresistible. As Zoe explained, “Bourne is an up-and-coming town” and one where people look for something new and appealing. A menu, yet to be finalised, will be strong on locally produced light bites, such as smashed avocado on toast and tomato bruschetta, with Danish pastries, brownies and blondies as ideal accompaniments to top quality coffees, teas, and soft drinks. Vegan and vegetarian options will of course be available too. “Hygge’s not just about fairy lights and fluffy socks. It’s much more than that; it’s about serving up cosiness in a cup”, Zoe assured me.

Bourne Town Council is taking very positive steps to improve our town and support our community and, as a part of this, has taken over from SKDC the responsibility to manage the Recreation Grounds. This will enable us to both upgrade facilities and make sure the whole area is kept in good order. The council has also taken responsibility for managing the long-awaited skate park for Bourne. SPRING CLEAN
Do you want to help keep our town, parks and green spaces clean this summer? Are you tired of seeing the amount of litter that people are leaving on our streets? If so the Town Council are engaging with ‘Keep Britain Tidy’ and their ‘Great British Spring Clean’ this March/April. Our outdoor spaces have proved more important than ever before, during these last two years, and that is why we are aiming to recruit volunteers to join us in cleaning up our town. The ‘Great British Spring Clean’ runs from March 25th to April 10th, and whilst groups will litter-pick over the entire period, the Town Council aim to start on Friday March 25th with the collected litter being sorted into recycling categories with input from local schools. overdue for the huge effort put into the project by ‘Dimension Skate Park’ over the years, (specifically Jonathan Budd, Nelly Jacobs, Phil Galpin and Brenda Johnson) who with others have never lost the faith! Work on the park should begin before the summer. We, at the council, are working hard to improve facilities across the town and build an inclusive and vibrant community that will benefit us all. We will only be successful if we work together, so if you feel you want to contribute fresh ideas, there are societies and groups across the town that need people to support and help develop them. If you are interested, please contact us on 01778 426123. What’s more, you could always stand for the council!

Morton’s Mathematics Maestros! n February, we celebrated the ‘NSPCC Number Day’. This fundraising day had children across the school raising money for the NSPCC with a fantastic £200 donation. We love Maths at our school, and we didn’t need any persuasion to spend a day dressed up in number-themed clothes and enjoying number-related activities. The children also learnt about the work of the NSPCC in supporting children and families across the country.
We have also had the chance to highlight a project that is taking place in Early Years and Key Stage 1. Teachers have linked up with specialists in the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCTEM) and their ‘Mastering Number’ programme. This programme aims to strengthen the understanding of number, and fluency with number facts, among children in the first three years at school.
An exciting practical ‘number sense’ session introduces specific concepts, using a range of materials and representations, including a rekenrek (see picture). Some of you might see similarities between a rekenrek and an abacus! The children very much enjoy their number sense sessions, and it is certainly helping to secure the best start in Mathematics for our children.” Executive Headteacher, Mr G. Trafford

Creative Cooking at Thurlby Community Primary Academy The spring term has already seen some exciting activities taking place at Thurlby CP Academy which have really engaged the children in their learning. The pupils in Year 2 have been learning about China across their entire curriculum but, in DT specifically, they have been designing their own salad dishes for a Chinese New Year Celebration. The children were able to taste lots of prepared salads and vegetables, as well as sampling salad dressings; this helped them to link their learning to the farming industry in the local area. Their teacher was very impressed with how sensible, adventurous, and brave the children were when trying the new foods. The class moved on to learning about the importance of hygiene in the kitchen and the children practised safe peeling and grating, whilst also developing chopping skills in preparation for making their own Chinese salad.
In Year 5, the children have been learning about the Maya civilisation which has led them to study Mexican food. After tasting many different foods, the children worked in teams to design and make their own nachos, salsa, guacamole, and fajitas. As part of their studies, they enjoyed a live question and answer session with Dr Diane Davies, a Maya archaeologist. The children asked lots of probing questions and received some fascinating answers, which helped to develop their understanding of this civilisation. Dr Davies’ virtual workshops have also been enjoyed by the children, when they were able to look at artefacts and uncover their mysteries. If you would like more information about joining Thurlby C.P. Academy, (there are places available in some year groups), then please e-mail enquiries@thurlby.lincs.sch.uk.

The Property Stock Market BY KIERAN ARTHUR, SALES MANAGER
More stock is key to unlocking chains
T Source: Dataloft, RICS NOTE: seasonally adjusted
he property market in Bourne has had an excellent start to 2022, with properties continuing to sell quickly, and fantastic sale prices being achieved. However, whilst this is positive news for home sellers, for buyers it remains difficult to secure the right home. Buyer demand continues to outweigh the supply of property stock on the market, which had been a major factor in the property price rise through 2021. In fact, buyer demand has been outweighing supply ever since the property market reopened in June 2020, with only a slight deceleration when the Stamp Duty break came to an end. New properties coming to the market recorded a net balance of -14% in December 2021, resulting in a nine-month run of falls in new properties coming to the market. House
price growth is likely to continue due to this imbalance in supply and demand, with more property stock required to ensure chains can be completed, with many home sellers currently struggling to find their next home, despite having secured a buyer for their current home. As testament to this, new buyer enquiries rose modestly in December 2021 (+9%), making this the fourth consecutive monthly rise in buyer demand. This is contrary to the above-mentioned drop in new property stock on the market. Here at Newton Fallowell, we ensure that our registered clients hear about new properties first, prior to them being launched to the online portals. As a result, we are selling many properties without the need and use of the online portals; therefore, we would encourage you to register your details and property requirements with our team. We will then be able to inform you of any suitable homes due to be launched to the market. For any property related advice, or to register your details with our team, please call us now on 01778 422567.

Alto Electrical send Big Love and thanks to ‘Bourne in Business’
A
BY COLEEN EVERITT, ALTO ELECTRICAL LIMITED
n important part of being in business is having a network of people that know you. But what happens when times get tough; do these people still offer the same support? The guys at ‘Bourne in Business’ do!
We attend this local business group in Bourne and have done for many years now. It starts in a venue (currently the Shambles in The Old Town Hall) and usually ends in the pub. I can’t tell you how much support we’ve had from this group. Through all the highs and the lows, they have given unfaltering love and support whilst we, as a business, struggled through the past eighteen months. I strongly suggest that if you have a local business, you tap into this local network as they are an amazing bunch who always have your back!
For more information about ‘Bourne in Business’, please contact Claire on 07837 499061 It is down to the support and loyalty of these business friends (and, of course, our loyal clients) that we have managed to ‘pull through to the other side’ and we have just moved into a lovely big new office in Essendine! This year looks really good so far, and we have some exciting plans that you will hear more about later. We welcome ‘drop-ins if anyone would like to come and talk to us about any electrical issues. We also have some wonderful new facilities such as smart screens so we can welcome Scouts/Brownies/ WI/home educating groups etc for talks and activities. If you would like to discuss anything like this, please call Coleen to see what we can offer.
Deciding who makes the tea round is a competitive sport

Also, thank you everyone for having faith in us as a business and keeping us going when times were tough. We are indebted to our local community, and we won’t forget it!

Will & Probate Services
It’s Not What Changes,
It is How You Manage it.
ADVICE FROM NICK ASH, MANAGING Director Will and Probate Services
We have had a challenging start to the year here at Will & Probate Services because two of my most experienced and trusted staff members have chosen to leave, one to pursue a lifelong ambition, and the other was poached by a larger law firm.
T
he loss of two such valued members of staff hurt on a personal level, but the manner of their leaving could not have been more different.
One planned her leaving and was open and honest. From the day that the new opportunity arose, she kept me informed every step of the way. We were able to plan her departure, what she had to hand over and how her duties would be covered. On the day she resigned, we knew what to do to cover her departure. The other was perhaps a more typical resignation; a letter on my desk informing me that she was leaving, an awkward conversation as to why and when, followed by a frantic couple of weeks trying to get everything ready to hand over.
talked about, the family were able to manage their loved one’s affairs in the months before the death. The records are in place so that the estate can be handled quickly and efficiently. The handover from one generation to the next is smooth. It doesn’t lessen the pain of loss, but it does help in many other ways. Then there is the more typical family, where death takes them by surprise. There is a scramble to find a will and who, if anyone, holds it. Nobody knows what is owned or owed, who is supposed to be doing what. Funeral wishes are never spoken about. Inevitably, the pain of the loss is added to by the stress of the admin, and everything takes longer than it otherwise would have done. So, the lesson to take is a simple one, don’t duck the difficult conversations; be open and honest with each other. Make a succession plan because your family will thank you in the end.
It got me thinking that the two resignations completely mirror what we deal with on a day-to-day basis when a family experiences a bereavement.
As for us, the world keeps turning, our new staff are settling in and enjoying their own new challenges. Our succession planning is better, and we are still here to help.
Some families (sadly a minority) have had all the BIG conversations and put the right planning in place. There is a well written will, the funeral has been

The practice will be launching Doctrin for their patients on Wednesday March 9th; however, once the platform is configured and tested, patients should be able to submit consultations from the afternoon of Tuesday March 8th for a next day response. It will replace the existing EConsult platform, and the team will respond during normal working hours. It is already in use at several Lakeside practices and attracts very positive patient feedback.
Please do not use the platform for urgent or emergency enquiries as it is manned during normal working hours and is intended for non-urgent medical cases and queries only.
Benefits for patients include: Easy to use system that is accessible from anywhere. Another way to make contact rather than by telephone. Less need to travel to the surgery. Easy access to healthcare advice and guidance. Triage to the most appropriate professional. Improved continuity in care and integration with multi-disciplinary professionals, allowing staff to collaborate with clinical colleagues for clinical cases. Meets national standards to provide 25% of appointments digitally. GP Partner and Non-Executive Director, Dr Ian Wheatley, said: ‘There are a range of benefits to our patients from using this system and it has been carefully designed to be easy to use and navigate. Many patients will be keen to use the system as it allows them to contact us at a time and place to suit them. ‘I would like to reassure patients who are not able to use an online platform, that we can be contacted by the usual methods. It just gives our patients added choice and flexibility.’

Liberty Partnership are delighted to launch
‘The Liberty Lunch’ to celebrate our community champions and those people that go the extra mile
BY RICHARD ASH CHARTERED FINANCIAL PLANNER AND DIRECTOR You may know one of those ‘champions’ who always helps where they can or goes that extra mile for a neighbour, a stranger or a friend, and if you do then we would like to hear from you. Our plan is to offer a modest reward of lunch out at a local pub, diner, coffee shop or eatery up to the value of £100. We would ask that this offer is taken up locally to support our fantastic local businesses. We will select a monthly ‘champion’ from any nominations we receive. When contacting us, we would ask that you say who they are, how you feel they have positively contributed towards our community, and provide their contact information, having asked their permission to do so. Please see this as being a good thing, something to celebrate, a way in which we at Liberty Partnership can celebrate our community. Sadly, we will not be able to recognise everyone, which we hope you all understand.
To make a nomination
Please e-mail us at: thelibertylunch@liberty-partnership.co.uk or write to us or drop a note through our door to: 104 Church Street, Market Deeping, Peterborough, PE6 8AL.

Simple Steps to Save on Your Energy Bills By Eileen Le Voi at Safe Local Trades The worst of the winter weather may be over, but with ongoing headlines of utility bill hikes and more of us permanently working from home, how can we save money? Popping on the kettle for that extra cuppa, keeping the chill off during daytime hours and having the TV or radio on while we work all have an impact on our energy usage. According to the Energy Saving Trust, the cost of living is at its highest level in a decade, with household energy bills being the largest expense. The recent gas crisis has pushed energy bills up by well over £200 since last winter and they’re expected to rise again in April. While there are some government grants that can be applied for, here are a few simple but effective energy-saving tips: • Turning down your room thermostat by just one degree can save around £60 a year. • A fully draught-proof home could save around £25 a year. • Boilers account for around 55% of what is spent on energy bills in a year. • Turning off the lights will lead to a £15 a year saving but switching to LED bulbs will save £40 a year. • Laptops, TVs, and game consoles account for around 7% of your energy bill. • A single computer and monitor left on 24 hours a day will cost around £45 a year. Switching them off out of hours and enabling standby features could reduce this to less than £10 a year each and prolong the lifespan of equipment. • A dripping tap can waste more than 5,500 litres of water a year, so make sure your taps are properly turned off and change faulty washers promptly. • Fitting your hot water cylinder with an insulating jacket will save you £20 a year in heating costs and 110kg of carbon dioxide emissions. • Your room thermostat should be set between 18°C and 21°C. If you only have a single room thermostat for the whole house, for every degree you increase the temperature, it will increase the heating bill by about 10%. • Getting younger family members to play their part too can promote energy saving awareness that will lead to cheaper utility bills. Safe Local Trades has reliable tradesmen who can carry out property improvements that can save you money, as well as those who specialise in energy saving solutions for your home or business.

MERGER OF TWO LONGESTABLISHED LOCAL FIRMS
T
he partners of R Longstaff & Co. and Escritt Barrell Golding (EBG) are delighted to announce that their practices have merged with effect from January 21st, 2022. This development in the future of both firms provides an exciting opportunity to join two very long-established firms who operate in Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire. Escritt and Barrell was established in 1860 and the Longstaff family have been in business since 1870 although the roots of their firm go back to 1770.
There is considerable synergy between the two firms with strengths in agricultural and rural estate matters, commercial property agency and management and professional valuation work. R. Longstaff & Co are also a market leader in the residential sales
and lettings sectors in South Lincolnshire. EBG will continue to operate from their office in St Peter’s Hill, Grantham; R. Longstaff & Co’s South Lincolnshire offices include their main office at Spalding, with additional offices at Bourne and Holbeach. The partners of EBG, Geoffrey Bishop and Stephen Short, will remain in post; Geoffrey as a full-time practising rural surveyor, whilst Stephen will continue in a practising consultancy role. Geoffrey commented, “I see this as an extremely exciting development, and I look forward to working in the expanded practice where we will continue to provide a quality service to the rural community and the commercial property sector.” Senior partner of R Longstaff & Co, Christopher Longstaff, added, “We look forward to providing a service in all property sectors over a considerably wider area in Lincolnshire and the adjoining counties in the future”.

SAND A sand consisting of fine rounded particles. This sand is the most common sand used in the construction industry for making renders and mortars due to its fine particle size creating a smooth easily worked product.
LIMESTONE Pure crushed Limestone. Is now widely used as a bedding layer for block paving applications where a SuDS bedding layer is required.
BALLAST Our All in Ballast is supplied in a 1000kg bulk bag and is a mixture of Sharp Sand and Gravel. Ballast is often used to make concrete.
GRAVEL A mixture of angular and rounded stones washed and passed through various screens to create aggregate. Widely used in the construction industry as a drainage medium.
MULCH Wood mulches are some of the most popular choices for gardeners, and for good reason. Wood mulch includes shredded bark, bark nuggets, and straw, and offer many benefits for your garden.
