I
Welcome to your April issue... ’m often surprised at just how quickly, within a few weeks, we move on each year from those cold, dark mornings and all that rain and those gale force winds – I’ve already forgotten the names of this year’s dreadful storms! Blossom is now on show and summer is nearly upon us.
As ever, I hope you find the wide range of topics included in this month’s magazine both informative and enjoyable. Many thanks to all the contributors and advertisers for their hard work and for your continuing support and words of encouragement. Enjoy the Easter celebrations, and best wishes for a happy break to you all.

“Spring is the best life coach: It gives you all the energy you want, all the positive thoughts you wish and all the boldness you need!” These are the words of the contemporary Turkish novelist, Mehmet Murat Ildan, and sum up how many of us are feeling, now spring is here. Sadly, the recent events in Ukraine serve to create so much sadness, and it is the same writer who gave us: “The power of every dictator has two main sources; his psychopathic mind and the support of the very easily deceivable, ignorant masses!” This ought to be a time of new life and joy, so let’s hope that a solution to the Ukraine conflict can be found very soon. Finally, on a lighter note: It’s difficult to say what our neighbour does. I’ve heard she sells seashells on the seashore.

t is fair to record that the group’s fortunes have had their share of optimistic highs and frustrating lows throughout its journey, but nonetheless it has raised both awareness and vital funding to make its vision a reality.
The concept that the youth of Bourne deserved a skatepark was mooted from the turn of the century and started to take shape when Bourne United Charities offered a suitable piece of land, adjacent to the football ground in 2012, and work began on designing the facility with the close involvement of the young people of Bourne. In 2016, the group officially registered with the Charity Commission in the name of ‘Dimension Skatepark’ and planning permissions were sought and secured in 2017 and 2020.
The Town Council, (supported by a S106 loan from South Kesteven District Council, along with numerous offers of financial support from local organisations such as The Len Pick Trust and Bourne Round Table), is happy that it will be able to undertake its responsibilities without imposing any increase in cost to residents. A management team has been created to carry the project through to completion, and consists of representatives of the Town Council, Dimension Skatepark and Bourne United Charities. Final discussions are being held with the design and build company contracted for the initiative, (CANVAS Spaces Ltd) and construction is expected to start in April 2022. Great credit is due to the persistence and dedication of the members of Dimension Skatepark and to all those individuals and organisations who have generously supported the project over the years.
A major step forward came in May 2018 when Sport England offered a grant of £100,000, one third of the needed target, to be added to previously secured pledges. Having endured many hurdles along the way, Dimension Skatepark has welcomed the backing of Bourne Town Council who have agreed to assist the team by taking ownership of the project, control of the build and future management of the facility. 4

Luxurious New PE Changing Rooms for Bourne Academy
O
pened to students from Monday March 14th, Bourne Academy’s brand-new PE changing room facility was officially opened by Mr Matt Sammy, (Head of School), Ms Ged Coles, (Director of Sport & Physical Education), Mr Matt Leonard, (Head of Boys PE) plus Year 10 students, Ted Ash, and Daisy Hay. This £250,000 investment will make participating in sports more comfortable for their students, with two separate changing areas and the luxury of underfloor heating! The lighting uses LEDs which are on a motion sensor making them more energy efficient. Located over two floors, there will now be even more space for students and travelling teams from other schools to change and keep their clothes and personal belongings clean and safe. They are conveniently located, giving easy access to the grass pitches, outdoor ‘Astro’ pitch and Sports Hall. There are ramps leading up to the building so they are fully accessible to all students, and toilets can be accessed from the outside for easy access during lessons or matches. Mr Matt Sammy, Head of School said, “We are all incredibly excited to have this exceptional new building and I am confident that our students will reap the benefits of the underfloor heating in those cold winter months!”

Ever thought of teaching?
Now’s the time!
The Deepings SCITT is a highly valued provider in South Lincolnshire. (Ofsted, 2022)
We are approaching a decade of high-quality teacher training here at The Deepings and it is great to have the Ofsted stamp of approval as it means we can choose the top talent and develop them into the very best teachers for the children in our county. The recruitment of teachers is always an issue, even more so post-pandemic, and in England, there are now 15000 fewer teachers than there were in 2010 and by 2024 there will be a projected 47000 shortfall.
If you have a degree already (however old!) you can train on your Leaders are ambitious doorstep. The Deepings SCITT and its partner schools see our for their trainees… trainees trusting schools and current teaching staff to train them rather than going down the traditional university route. We offer expectations are high… one day a week core training (in Deeping for secondary, or Bourne trainees attain well. for primary) with the rest of the week spent training ‘on the job’ (Ofsted, 2022) with a mentor in your host schools. We have a range of placements, both primary and secondary, across The Deepings, Bourne, Spalding, Peterborough, Stamford, Boston and a few further afield. We have vacancies for a September 2022 start and we are looking for people who have (or will have) a degree, have a passion for teaching and want to inspire young people to fulfil their potential. We would love to have a chat with you about the exciting teacher training opportunities available.
Friendly faces await!

Hands-On Learning as Morton School Celebrates Science
A
t Morton C of E Primary School, we value opportunities to develop an interest in a particular subject area by visits, special days, and visitors. One subject that staff have been focussed on developing is Science. The foundations of an interest in science start in our Early Years Foundation Stage where children investigate the world around them through water play (forces – floating and sinking), shadows (Our Planet Earth), amongst other areas of learning.
These included the disappearing pencil, the floating man, the best bubble solution in the world, a windmill powered by candles, and secret messages that only appeared when held near a flame.
The children enjoyed the opportunity to choose an area of science that particularly interested them. “We really enjoyed trying lots of different versions of our investigation at home first,” said Savannah. Jakub commented, “I researched the history of secret codes and wrote an explanation to go with my investigation.”
March saw a celebration of science for British Science Week coordinated by our Science leader, Niki Durham. Badger Class (Year 6) enjoyed the week, running their own Science Fair. The class planned an investigation, designed posters, and demonstrated their results to visitors from other classes.
As well as the excitement of the Science Fair, children investigated how Gentoo penguins make their nests strong and safe in wind and rain.

r e t s a E The Easter Bunny
Originating among German Lutherans, the “Easter Hare” originally played the role of a judge, deciding whether children were good or disobedient in behaviour at the start of the season of Eastertide. Besides being popular in much of Europe, it is thought to have made its way across the Atlantic in the 1700s via German immigrants, who settled in Pennsylvania and brought with them their tradition of an egg-laying hare called “Osterhase” or “Oschter Haws”, with their children making nests in which they would receive coloured eggs.
The world’s biggest omelette Every Easter, in the French town of Bessières, the Giant Omelette Brotherhood is responsible for creating a huge omelette, comprising 5,000 eggs served to 1,000 people in the town’s main square. The tradition is said to have originated at the beginning of the 19th century when Napoleon and his army stopped there one night and were fed omelettes that were so good, they ordered the townsfolk to gather all their eggs and make a giant omelette the next day.
Egg dancing Also known as “hop egg”, this is a centuries-old tradition which originated in Germany and is still enjoyed in the UK, USA and much of Europe. Rules vary but always involve dancing around a floor strewn with eggs, trying not to break any. A slightly safer alternative can be found depicted in “The Egg Dance”, a painting by Dutch Renaissance artist, Pieter Aertsen. In this, the goal was to use your feet to roll an egg out of a bowl, keeping it within a chalk circle, before flipping the bowl to cover the egg.
Egg rolling Or “Pace egging” as the ancient Lancashire custom would have it, involves launching hard-boiled eggs down a grassy hill, and is a centuries-old English tradition, successfully exported across the Atlantic. The White House in Washington has been hosting an Easter Egg Roll (in which participants race to roll eggs with long spoons) since 1878 on its South Lawn.
Egg tapping Also known as egg knocking, egg pacqueing, egg boxing, egg picking, egg jarping or the more prosaic egg fight, this involves knocking a hard-boiled egg against that of your opponent until one of them cracks. A kind of Easter version of conkers, with messier results, the last egg standing is the winner.
Kite flying

In Bermuda, children have been flying brightly coloured homemade kites on Good Friday ever since (legend has it) a schoolteacher used a kite to explain Jesus’ ascension to heaven.

Butler to the World Putin’s People BY OLIVER BULLOUGH Sunday Times bestselling author, Oliver Bullough reveals the scandalous reality of Britain’s new position in the world. How did Britain become the servant of the world’s most powerful and corrupt men? From accepting multi-million-pound tips from Russian oligarchs, to enabling Gibraltar to become an offshore gambling haven, meet ‘Butler Britain’! “Butler to the World” reveals how the UK took up its position at the elbow of the worst people on Earth: the oligarchs, kleptocrats and gangsters. We pride ourselves on values of fair play and the rule of law, but few countries do more to frustrate global anti-corruption efforts. It doesn’t have to be that way.
APRIL 2022
BY CATHERINE BELTON
A chilling and revelatory expose of the KGB’s renaissance, Putin’s rise to power, and how Russian black cash is subverting the world. “Putin’s People” reveals the untold story of how Vladimir Putin and his entourage of KGB men seized power in Russia and built a new league of oligarchs. Through exclusive interviews with key inside players, Belton tells how Putin’s people conducted their relentless seizure of private companies, took over the economy, siphoned billions, blurred the lines between organised crime and political powers, shut down opponents, and then used their riches and power to extend influence in the West.

Your Garden
O
April Gardening Tips ne of the main tasks is planting out potatoes – a rough guide would be: first earlies around late March, second earlies early to mid-April and maincrops mid to late April.
Potatoes need a sunny site away from frost pockets. Dig a trench 12cm (5in) deep and space the tubers 30cm (12in) apart for earlies and 37cm (15in) for maincrop, in rows 24in (60cm) apart for earlies and 75cm (30in) apart for maincrop. Alternatively, you can grow the potatoes under black polythene, planting the tubers through slits. The big advantage of this method is that there is no need to earth up and the new potatoes form just below soil level which means there is no digging to harvest them, they'll lie just below the sheet. Strawberries can be planted out now. An easy way to propagate strawberries is to plant any runners from the plants (keeping them attached) and put the runner into a plant pot filled with compost - the runner can be held down with a “U” shaped staple or piece of wire. Last chance to sow aubergines, chillies, and tomatoes (under cover) as they require a long growing season to do well. Other crops that can be sown under cover include celeriac, courgettes, squashes, pumpkins, leeks, and marrows. Other jobs for the month include:
16
Bourne
• If you have not planted your onion sets then make that one of your first jobs this month. • You might start seeing aphids on your crops now – blast them off with water or spray with a horticultural soft soap. • Beetroot and carrots can be sown directly outside. So can peas, but they are a favourite snack for mice – if these are a problem, sow them indoors and plant the plants outside when they are 15cm tall. • It is very tempting to sow seeds all in one batch; however, they will all need pricking out, thinning, and potting on at the same time. Sow the seeds that have the longest growing season first and stagger the rest. • Plant asparagus crowns by the end of the month. • Do not forget to regularly hand weed or hoe around seedlings as the weeds appear as they create a lot of competition for food and moisture. • Put up pea sticks and build cane supports ready for climbing beans while the ground is still soft. • Tomato and cucumber seeds can be sown indoors but wait until the end of the month. • Spring onions, chard, parsnips, spinach and broad beans can be sown into the open ground. Happy gardening!

Words from the Mayor
COUNCILLOR PAUL FELLOWS

Bourne was, without any doubt, lit up on Saturday March 19th and although the installations and projections were what physically did the ‘lighting up’, it was the families of Bourne that really made it shine.
B
efore ‘Light up Bourne’, I really had no idea what it would be like and how successful it might be. A bright, crisp spring day led into the perfect conditions for the event which brought an amazing perspective to North Street. Judi and I had a great time meeting people who, like us, were enthralled by the experience. I am always blown away by seeing the wonder on the faces of little people, as they are mesmerised by what they are seeing.
Enjoying the hospitality provided in Norths’ Shoe Shop, (God bless them!) and talking with a newly arrived family, it was too easy to ‘big up’ what a great place Bourne is. Not surprisingly, they knew anyway and seeing many other traders, welcoming people in, added so much to the evening. We did feel that perhaps the more pragmatic amongst us had booked a table in one of our many brilliant restaurants, coffee bars and pubs, but we tried not to be too bitter, as the wind started to bite! I do want to thank everyone who made this event 18
Bourne
happen, and to be so successful. Bourne does these ‘events’ so well. I do want to give a ‘big up’ to Community 4x4 who work to make sure our events run smoothly and, most importantly, safely. Without them, we really would find it hard to function. They are a non-profit making group who literally give up hours for the benefit of our community. All our community groups in and around Bourne would benefit from new people with energy, time, and good ideas. Please get involved if you can. We will make our Platinum Jubilee celebrations huge! It was a good time for the people of Bourne to come out and be together, and they did! It is so hard to be optimistic right now, coming off the back of the pandemic and with the realisation that it is still with us. If you now add to this the atrocities and war crimes going on in Ukraine, it is hard to be optimistic, but seeing everyone out together in Bourne is always fantastic; particularly now when we absolutely need to hold on to our shared values and beliefs - it was truly uplifting. The yellow and blue of Ukraine was projected on to the front of Wake House and every time I see that combination in and around Bourne I have hope. A P R IL 2 0 2 2

“Let there be Light!”
Bourne Abbey Church Gets an Electrical Upgrade BY COLEEN EVERITT, ALTO ELECTRICAL LIMITED
M
arch has been a very busy month as we, at Alto Electrical, have been working hard on a very special project. If you have been in Bourne Abbey recently, you will be aware that they have been coping with temporary lighting for several years now. This month, we have been replacing the existing system with a new lighting design, which will future-proof the system and allow easy access, should any issue arise. We have liaised with Father Chris and the Parochial Church Council (PCC), finding out exactly what they needed in the church; put some ideas together with the help of a specialist church lighting designer; and presented a 3D video of the design to the PCC, answering any questions they had. This included the life span of the fittings, access to the church, the cable runs … all the expected points of concern.
This exciting project has taken three years to get off the ground. Owing to this eleventh century, Grade 1 listed church being so popular, the diocese was quite rightly concerned that the lighting was going to meet all the objectives it needed to. Alterations were made, in order to gain approval, and now we are thrilled to be working on this prestigious, local project. Regrettably, we have had to keep the church closed, except for thirty minutes per day. This is a safety measure, but by the time this magazine has been delivered we will hopefully have our ‘high access equipment’ out of the church. At this point, the church will then be able to open for an additional two hours (3pm-5pm) until the work has been completed, when normality will resume. The lighting will be finished in good time for the Easter services, so please go along and enjoy them.

It Doesn’t Get Any Easier!
T
he majority of divorcing couples manage to reach an agreement in dividing their property and other financial assets, without having to go to court. It is definitely preferable to avoid the expense, stress and delay of litigation if you can, and mediation is available and indeed, has to be attempted, before a court application is considered.
However, even if an agreement is reached, you should still obtain a clean break finance order to draw a line under the financial side of the divorce, once and for all. If the parties have been doing everything themselves and not instructed solicitors, they may feel seriously challenged by the formalities required for the consent financial order to be filed on the Government online platform. As well as the order itself, which must contain technical clauses to be effective as a clean break, there is a new form to be used from February 18th, for the parties to summarise their financial circumstances and explain the background to the settlement proposed. The form used to have eight pages and was relatively straightforward to complete. The new version has over twenty pages and is much more complicated. In short, it is good advice to consult a Family Law solicitor if you have not done so during a divorce, at the stage that you are asking the court to approve a consent financial order. It will speed up the process and make sure that the order you end up with is the one you intended.

Attention Landlords! Are you aware of the upcoming new legislation for the energy performance of rental properties? BY KIERAN ARTHUR, SALES MANAGER
T
he Government have announced that they are targeting newly let properties to require an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of band C or above from the end of 2025. Approximately 51% of all rental properties let out over the last twelve months had an EPC rating of band C or above, which is virtually unchanged from the previous twelve months. This would mean that, once the new legislation is in place, the other 49% of properties would be unable to move a new tenant into the
home, without works carried out to improve the EPC rating to a band C or higher. Mortgage lenders also have new requirements. They must ensure that the average performance of their domestic portfolios is at least EPC band C by the end of 2030. However, despite the new upcoming legislation, it has been announced that landlords will not be expected to pay more than £3,500 plus VAT on energy efficiency improvements. Whilst the end of 2025 may seem a long time away, it is important for all landlords to prepare for this new legislation, sooner rather than later! If you have any questions regarding the upcoming change in legislation and how this may impact you or your property portfolio, please do not hesitate to contact our team on 01778 422567.

In the exhibition you will be able to study the behaviour of several different dinosaur species, from the small and agile Sauronitholestes, to the savage Dromaeosaurus and the plant-eating Tenontosaurus. Bones and fossils will also be on

display, to see what they can tell us about T.rex. The Revd Canon Tim Alban Jones, Vice Dean of Peterborough, said: “We hope it will be a highlight of the school summer holidays for many of our visitors and we are especially looking forward to welcoming lots of families. The models of these amazing pre-historic creatures will no doubt inspire a sense of awe and wonder, even more so when you are seeing them in the magnificent setting of our medieval cathedral.” Tickets to see “T.rex: The Killer Question” are £6 per child (aged 3-16 years), £8 per adult and £25 for a family ticket (2 adults and up to 3 children aged 3-16 years, or 1 adult and up to 4 children aged 3-16 years). The tickets are available via the Cathedral’s website www.peterborough-cathedral.org.uk/t.rex or by calling Ticket Source on 0333 666 3366 during office hours (an additional £1.80 fee applies).

high!) and their high-quality striking designs. There is a range of styles available, all made from rattan, resin, or stainless steel, so remaining strong and durable during bad weather. Most of the solar powered water features also come with LED lights so they become an attraction throughout those long, warm, summer evenings. Outdoor Living UK have over two thousand solar water features, which have battery back-up and, as they are wire-less, they can be placed anywhere in the garden. Whilst the initial cost of the solar option might be higher than a similar, standard item, the long-term savings will significantly outweigh that initial extra amount. It is also great to be able to enjoy a beautiful feature whilst at the same time looking after the environment. For more information, please call 01733 688464 (office hours are 9am – 1pm).

Getting a refund for a Cancelled or Delayed Train With many of us using train services to visit places or commute to work, this month we take you through some of your options concerning getting a refund for a cancelled or delayed train. If you are delayed and arrive at your destination more than half an hour late, you’ll usually be able to get some money back. Some train companies will also give you compensation if your train is more than fifteen minutes late. You need to keep your train tickets to get a refund. You should try to claim within twenty-eight days, but some train companies allow longer. If you travelled with Transport for London (TfL), for example on the London Underground, you could visit their website to find how much you could get and how to claim. If you have a season ticket, the best thing to do is ask at your ticket office or check your train company’s website. You’ll usually be able to get some money
back for a delay or cancellation. You are entitled to a full refund if your train was cancelled - it doesn’t matter what type of ticket you bought. The amount you can claim depends on which train company you travelled with - check your ticket if you’re not sure. You can claim compensation by visiting the train company’s website - most have online forms you can use. You’ll probably need to upload a picture of your ticket. You can write them a letter if you’d prefer. You’ll need to give details of your journey and send your original tickets. It’s a good idea to make copies of them in case your letter goes missing - a digital photograph or scan will do. You should get a refund within a month. A lot of companies offer vouchers to use on future train journeys. You don’t have to accept them - if you want a cash refund, you can insist on it. If you would like any more information or advice about this issue, please do not hesitate to call Adviceline on 0808 278 7996 to speak to a trained adviser. We are here to help you find a way forward.

Consumer Advice
Get Your Home ‘Springready’ While Avoiding a DIY Drama! By Eileen Le Voi at Safe Local Trades The Easter break is traditionally a time when “DIY-ers” and spring-cleaners roll up their sleeves and tackle all manner of jobs around the home. This may include plans to move house or maybe a long-awaited garden makeover. If you are selling your home, then you will want it to look its very best to keep you one step ahead of the competition. Beating the rush means you can start showcasing your 15:38 property earlier than others, so now is the perfect time to get serious about selling. Alternatively, if a thorough spring clean is on your agenda, then here are our super six tips: 1 Take one room at a time – this way you won’t get overwhelmed by the task and be ruthless with your de-cluttering. Ask yourself, “Does the item make me happy, does it serve a purpose, and when was the last time I used it?” 2 Kitchen: start with the cupboards and then move on to the cutlery drawer (tip: soak teastained teaspoons in a mug of water with a few drops of vinegar), microwave, kettle, and toaster. 3 Bedroom: empty the wardrobe and discard anything you haven’t worn in the past year or if it doesn’t fit. Sell good condition clothes and bag up others for charity. 4 Your working area: maintain a clutter-free environment, going through paperwork, refiling, or shredding as you go along. Have a digital de-clutter too. 5 Children’s bedrooms: encourage them to go through their belongings and donate any unwanted items to charity. In return, treat them to some new bed linen or some new funky storage boxes. 6 Keep walls clutter-free! If you have got newly decorated walls, only put back up pictures and photographs that you really want. If you don’t have the time, skill or confidence to give your home the makeover it deserves, then Safe Local Trades can put you in contact with many reputable and reliable professionals to help make your home sparkle this spring. Whether it’s cleaning or de-cluttering, odd jobs around the home, decorating, bringing new life to your upholstery, installing a new kitchen or bathroom, getting the windows professionally cleaned or your garden landscaped – they have tried, tested and reliable tradespeople for the job; however big or small. www.safelocaltrades.com AAPPRRIL IL 22002222

Thinking of Giving up Smoking?
M
any people ask me if hypnotherapy can help them give up smoking; well, hypnotherapy has the reputation for being the best way to quit smoking available.
Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can help someone who is determined to quit smoking for good, by using your imagination to create a nonsmoking future which is positive, empowering, and one that allows you to take control not only of your smoking habits but of your life.
The benefits of stopping smoking are amazing – You will: ● have
a decreased chance of having a heart attack after twenty-four hours of stopping.
● improve ● feel ● no
your immune system.
more socially acceptable.
longer be burdened by a nasty habit.
● no
longer be taking in 4,500 celldestroying chemicals.
● learn
to control cravings.
● have
more energy.
● learn
to control stress.
● have
skin with a much-improved appearance. fitter and healthier. ● reduce the risk of developing illness. ● no longer smell of tobacco or smoke. ● enjoy the taste of food more. ● improve your breathing and fitness levels. ● feel happier, more confident and in more control. ● have improved fertility levels. ● save money and be able to spend money ● feel
on things which can improve your quality of life, rather than undermine it. ● no longer endanger those around you with your ‘passive smoking’. The ‘stop smoking hypnotherapy session’ works by first explaining why the brain fools us into thinking it is acceptable to smoke. The hypnosis part of the stop smoking treatment is a key stage to cementing the change during which the client experiences around forty-five minutes of hypnosis. During the hypnosis process, the subconscious mind effectively “rewires” itself to help the person’s willpower and commitment to smoking cessation. The stop smoking hypnotherapy formula works regardless of how many cigarettes you smoke or how long you have been smoking. The treatment is tailored to you as an individual so you can get the best out of your life and helps you to realise your full potential, in a relaxed comfortable environment.
“Give your lungs a rest and stop TODAY” If you would like to book an appointment or find out more about how to quit smoking for good, contact Christine on: 0780 9690964 or contact@beardwoodhypnotherapy. co.uk.

All Dermal Fillers! ermal fillers help to diminish fine lines and wrinkles while, at the same time, allowing fullness to return to the face. Unfortunately, as we age our faces lose their fat, and the facial muscles must work closer to the skin surface causing lines and loose skin to become more apparent. The facial skin also stretches, which adds to the loss of volume, although sun exposure, genetics and lifestyle also play a part. The fillers can help with plumping thin lips, softening facial creases and wrinkles, enhancing shallow contours, improving the appearance of scarring, and also reconstructing contour deformities in the facial area. These are very helpful in delaying early signs of ageing, although they are only temporary. Results are obvious straightaway and last anywhere between twelve and eighteen months in some people, such as non-drinkers or non-smokers. Dermal fillers are gel-like substances that are injected beneath the skin, and both men and women choose this popular facial rejuvenation treatment as it is a cost-effective way to look younger without surgery or any downtime. Call us now and book in for a free consultation if you would like to discuss these treatments more, and why not take advantage of this amazing offer in April? Let us get you looking like a more youthful version of yourself!

TREATMENT REVIEW
Alistair and Julie both great people. My first time having any treatment so was nervous, mainly about the results, but should not have been. Had marionette lines, upper and lower filled. Wow, results were excellent, not over done, produced the "healthier" look I was looking for. Can't recommend them highly enough.

R E V O H T R O N M A AD tion Specialist }
I
{ The Body Transforma ’d like to introduce myself. I’m Adam Northover, founder of “Adam Northover: The Body Transformation Specialist”. I’m based in Bourne, but work with clients all over the country due to my online presence. My passion is health and fitness and I’m delighted to have the opportunity to be a regular contributor to Discovering Bourne Magazine.
I’m going to make a bold claim here. If you take on board the advice I give, then I WILL help you to change your life for the better! I’ve worked with hundreds of individuals over the years, helping them to transform their lifestyle, mindset, and physiques. Now I’d like to help you too!
If the recent pandemic has taught us anything, it’s that our health should not be taken for granted. The link between obesity and severe outcomes from Covid-19 is well known, with Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organisation, stating that the link between obesity and Covid-19 mortality rates was “clear and compelling”. Many of you will have decided to receive vaccinations and subsequent booster jabs to “save the NHS”, but did you know that obesity-related illness costs the UK £6 billion each year, with figures showing that nearly two-thirds of adults in England are either overweight or obese? In 2019-20, there were over one million hospital admissions where obesity was a contributing factor. Imagine the pressure that this puts on the NHS! Now look in the mirror and ask yourself, are you one of those who falls into the overweight/obese category? Now ask yourself, isn’t now the right time to do something about it?
It’s time to start putting your health and fitness first. Don’t become another damning statistic, succumbing to an obesity-related illness. Read my articles each month and I’ll provide you with tips on changing your mentality when it comes to nutrition and exercise, help you to understand how to lose weight whilst still eating the foods you love, finally end that cycle of “yo-yo dieting” and above all, become the best version of you possible. I genuinely cannot wait to help you!
“Your body is your greatest investment!”
If you are overweight, you are at greater risk of heart disease and stroke; diabetes; high blood pressure; many forms of cancer; gallbladder disease and gallstones; osteoarthritis; gout; breathing problems such as sleep apnoea and asthma; high cholesterol and more…

Why Make a Will? WORDS FROM RICHARD WOOD
1
Your property will go to those people who you decide should have it. If no will is made, you die intestate and strict rules apply as to who shall benefit. For example, if a person dies intestate, leaving a wife and children, the wife receives the statutory legacy of £275,000 and the rest is divided as to one half for the wife and the other half equally between the children. If there are no surviving relatives, then the estate passes to the Government.
2 3 4 5 6
If you want to give to a charity on your death, then you must make a will.
You can leave your estate in a taxefficient way by making use of the Inheritance Tax exemptions. You can choose who you want to administer your estate.
You can set up trusts in your will, for example to provide funds for the benefit of a disabled person. You can appoint a guardian or guardians of infant children.
7 8
You can make financial or other provision for pets.
You can instruct as to whether you wish to be buried or cremated, or what hymns should be sung at your funeral
MAKING A WILL To be valid: -
a. the will must be in writing, b. the maker must be eighteen or
over, unless a member of the armed forces on active military service,
c. the maker must have mental capacity and knowledge of what they are signing,
d. there must be no duress or undue influence on the person making the will,
e. the will must be validly executed. f. A will can be challenged if any of the above
are absent. In some cases, a will has to be proved by the High Court which grants probate.

Letting go of Negative Thoughts Strategies that Work
[ by Lucy Briggs ]
Recently, I walked past a pond and saw a plate shattered at the bottom. I smiled to myself, which might sound strange, but this plate was special.
S
omeone had written their negative thoughts, feelings, and experiences on it. I imagined this person brimming with emotion as they hurled their plate into the water, watching it smash on the stones, and the relief they must have felt afterwards. Now, while I may not recommend throwing plates into ponds (we don’t want to injure any wildlife!) it made me think of several similar exercises that I have encountered during my time as a therapist, and as a service user of mental health services, which I wanted to share with you.
1
Leaves on a stream! Is there something you want to let go of? Write it on a leaf (or simply imagine that this is what the leaf represents, as they can be rather tricky to write on), pop it on a stream, and watch your worries float away. This is a widely recognised technique which I learned from our wonderful NHS Local Mental Health Team. Similarly, I find that writing something down and then burning it (safely!) can be extremely therapeutic.

D I S C O V E R I N G

2
Write a letter. Sometimes, it can be difficult to find the right words. Try writing a letter to someone. Pour your heart out, be completely honest, but this particular letter is not to be sent. Instead, bin it, lock it in a drawer, bury it, tear it up – whatever feels best for you. Merely writing down your feelings can be super helpful, even though the recipient will never read their letter.
3
Free writing. There are no rules here! Spend ten minutes or so writing. It can be complete nonsense, fiction, song lyrics… whatever is on your mind, as long as you just keep writing. Even if you end up writing about how stupid writing is, something useful is bound to come up. The experience of dumping a load of information from our brain onto the page has been shown to be beneficial for our mental wellbeing.

A simple ‘To Do’ list. I often find myself in bed, late at night, thinking about the many millions of things that I must do. Yet if I take the time to write a list down, and I see my tasks staring back at me, I realise that it’s barely anything compared to what I imagined. Wishing you all a happy and healthy spring.

Will & Probate Services
Take the next
STEP!
ADVICE FROM NICK ASH, MANAGING Director Will and Probate Services
In the sixteen years that I have run Will & Probate Services, there has always been one qualification that has been the ‘gold-standard’ in our industry – full membership of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP).
F
or many years, achieving it was a pipe dream. I left school at sixteen with a bunch of ‘O’ Levels and this was a ‘Masters’ level qualification, involving three to four years of study, and having to write four academic papers, five thousand words each, fully researched and referenced. Put simply, I didn’t think it was for me; I wasn’t good enough. Until I decided that I was! So, three years ago, I decided to go for it, do the study and put my knowledge to the test. I wrote my first paper on ‘Proprietary Estoppel’ (don’t ask!) and it passed. The following year, I wrote about the ‘Validity of Wills’ and the ‘Role of Executors’, and then finally, last October saw me submitting my final essay on ‘Testamentary Capacity in the Elderly’. Then, in January this year, the e-mail arrived; I had passed my final test and all that was needed was for the membership committee to approve my application. On March 1st, I got the e-mail, I was in! A sixteen-year dream achieved … the highest level of qualification in my industry.
“That’s fine”, I hear you say, (some might even be congratulating me!) “but what does that mean for me as a potential client?” The STEP qualification concentrates on high-net-worth families and strategies for dealing with family wealth across generations, as well as the problems that family wealth can bring. By understanding all these issues, I can advise you and your family, and you can be certain that the strategies and planning tricks and tips that we use for multi-millionpound families are put to effective use in your planning … ensuring that your family keeps and makes the most of what is yours. Oh, and if you happen to be a multi-millionaire looking for some gold-standard advice on end-of-lifeplanning, then “Hello!” Everyone deserves the absolute best advice, and we have always been committed to providing it for our clients – now I have the qualification to prove it! Call us today for an initial consultation about your needs – 01778 252301. Nick Ash, TEP

WINES FROM THAILAND:
A Good Choice
T
hailand (officially the Kingdom of Thailand, and previously known as Siam) is a country in Southeast Asia, with Bangkok as its capital city.
Today, manufacturing and agriculture are leading parts of Thailand’s economy, alongside countless tourists visiting this fascinating country. From the shopping malls of Bangkok, through the fabulous coastal beaches, with hundreds of tropical islands, plus the nightlife and world heritage attractions, culture, history, sports and more, there is something for all to appreciate and enjoy. Thai cuisine and wines are very popular and can now be found globally. Monsoon Valley is a multiaward-winning fine wine producer. Grapes are carefully selected and transported in air-conditioned vehicles from the Monsoon Valley Vineyard to the Siam Winery. Producing splendid wines, with grapes only grown in Thailand, Monsoon Valley wines are now recognised and enjoyed by numerous connoisseurs, as well as being available in five-star hotels and restaurants in Thailand and around the world. Monsoon Valley White wine has a pleasant bouquet, plus a good mouthfeel and palate, and is excellent with seafood and white meats. The Monsoon Valley Red has good red fruits for 68
By Trevor Langle y
the bouquet and for the mouth’s pleasures. This pairs wonderfully with red meats. If it’s a rosé that is preferred, then the Monsoon Valley Rosé will not disappoint, having grapes grown on ‘floating vineyards’ and at the Monsoon Valley Vineyard. This wine has a delicate nose, excellent mouthfeel, and palate. It is a wine that is extremely popular with many people. If a Shiraz is required for satisfaction, then Monsoon Valley Shiraz, from the Premium Range, with its ruby-red, enticing appearance, has it all. Dark fruits are in abundance, with oak-aged barrels contributing to the exceptional pleasures of this wine, and it is fantastic with red meats. For an aromatic, sweet wine, Chenin Blanc Dessert Wine (flagship) ‘ticks all the boxes’ for me. Having Chenin Blanc grapes, left on the vines for several more days, ensures the provision of the added sugars required to produce this impressive delight, which gives a grand finish. These are just some of the wines from the Monsoon Valley ranges. For all details, please visit www.monsoonvalleywine.co.uk and www.siamwinery.com
As always, enjoy!

Liberty Partnership are delighted to launch
‘The Liberty Lunch’ to celebrate our community champions and those people that go the extra mile
BY RICHARD ASH CHARTERED FINANCIAL PLANNER AND DIRECTOR You may know one of those ‘champions’ who always helps where they can or goes that extra mile for a neighbour, a stranger or a friend, and if you do then we would like to hear from you. Our plan is to offer a modest reward of lunch out at a local pub, diner, coffee shop or eatery up to the value of £100. We would ask that this offer is taken up locally to support our fantastic local businesses. We will select a monthly ‘champion’ from any nominations we receive. When contacting us, we would ask that you say who they are, how you feel they have positively contributed towards our community, and provide their contact information, having asked their permission to do so. Please see this as being a good thing, something to celebrate, a way in which we at Liberty Partnership can celebrate our community. Sadly, we will not be able to recognise everyone, which we hope you all understand.
To make a nomination
Please e-mail us at: thelibertylunch@liberty-partnership.co.uk or write to us or drop a note through our door to: 104 Church Street, Market Deeping, Peterborough, PE6 8AL.

Deeping’s Alan McKie is
“Liberty Lunch Champion”
T
he Waggon and Horses at Langtoft was chosen by this month’s nominated local resident as the venue for their well-deserved award. The scheme involves The Liberty Partnership in Market Deeping offering a meal to the value of £100 to anyone who has been nominated for having made a significant contribution to their local community. Alan McKie of Horsegate, Deeping St James, was nominated by Tom Jordan for his wonderful contributions to two separate organizations, all entirely voluntary with no remuneration whatsoever. As Tom explains, “Alan is a pensioner who has resided in the Deepings for over thirty years and now that he has fully retired from his occupation, he has ‘gone the extra mile’ to serve the local community.
Raised in Sunderland, Alan moved south in 1988 for his Sales Manager role in the telecommunications industry in Peterborough. He later ran The Crown and Anchor pub in Bridge Street, Deeping St James with his wife, Ann, before retiring. Clearly wanting to remain active and involved in his community, Alan joined the Men’s Group seven years ago, and two years later, he began his coordinating role in the Patient Participation Group.
He is the main coordinator for the Deepings Voluntary Car Scheme for transporting patients to and from hospital; the Deepings practice on Godsey Lane; and other institutions related to health. He has been fundamental to the success of this scheme, and, in addition, he represents the Car Scheme on the Patient Participation Group, helping to ensure that the practice patients’ needs are always met.”
Alan is very keen to point out that he is far from being alone in all his public-spirited ventures. The Car Scheme is only successful, for instance, because of the two other coordinators and the eighteen drivers who make up the team. Similarly, in the Men’s Group, Alan modestly explains that he is but one of a team of five.
“In addition, Alan is a very active team member of the Deepings Men’s Group and goes round the various hostelries, clubs, and other establishments to collect the collection cans. He then counts all the cash before passing it on to the club treasurer. Furthermore, he works shifts at the Men’s Group stores, sorting out the apparatus and ensuring that the equipment is in good working order before passing it on to those in need.”
Alan and Ann invited Tom Jordan and his wife Betty to share the generous award, and all enjoyed a delicious lunch on March 3rd at The Waggon and Horses in Langtoft.
