Welcome to your May issue...
W
hat better way to welcome you all, than with a smile? Mid-May to MidJune every year happens to be “National Smile Month”, one of the U.K’s largest and longest-running campaigns to promote good oral health. Now over forty years old, this year’s events will be taking place between May 17th and June 17th.
In a world where plenty of things seem to succeed in making us feel perhaps inadequate and sometimes sad, it’s worth remembering that it’s always much easier to smile than it is to frown. Remember … life is like a mirror- we get the best results when we smile at it! Our May issue is hopefully going to fill you all with the joys of spring and those long, warmer days of summer just around the corner, so smile away, and let’s all get ourselves ready for the fabulous long weekend, early next month, to celebrate The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee!

This year promises to be memorable, not least for the excitement due very soon, surrounding the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations. However, as some of us not-so-young folk of Bourne and district may recall, May 20th, 1962, was a very special day! Sixty years ago, at Zandvoort in the Dutch Grand Prix, Graham Hill won the first of the BRM’s glorious Formula One racing car victories that season, a season which was to see the Bourne-based team win both the World Drivers’ and the Constructors’ Championship. Yes, and all from a small factory on Spalding Road, now occupied by Golding, Young and Mawer auctioneers. Let the celebrations begin (and all at 1962 prices)! Thanks are due (strangely, I know) to the readers who keep asking me for little bits of monthly mirth, just like this … “My Uncle Eric invented the cold air balloon, but it never really took off.” “I once went into the John Lewis electrical department and said, “Can someone sell me a food mixer?” The guy said, “Kenwood?” I said, “Can you go and fetch him then?” Enjoy the read!

Lessons in Chemistry
The Creative Gardener
BY BONNIE GARMUS Chemist, Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, she would be the first to point out that there is no such thing. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute take a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans, the lonely, brilliant, Nobel-prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with - of all things - her mind. True chemistry results. Like science, life is unpredictable. Which is why a few years later, Elizabeth Zott finds herself not only a single mother, but the reluctant star of America’s most beloved cooking show, ‘Supper at Six’. Elizabeth’s unusual approach to cooking proves revolutionary. But, as her following grows, not everyone is happy, because she isn’t just teaching women to cook … she’s daring them to change the status quo!
The Lost Whale BY HANNAH GOLD What if you could communicate with a whale? Rio has been sent to live with a grandmother he barely knows in California, while his mum is in hospital back home. Alone and adrift, the only thing that makes him smile is joining his new friend Marina on her dad’s whale watching trips. That is until an incredible encounter with White Beak, a gentle giant of the sea changes everything. But when White Beak goes missing, Rio must set out on a desperate quest to find his whale and somehow save his mum. Dive into this incredible story about the connection between a boy and a whale and the bond that sets them both free. Perfect for readers 8 years +.

The Queen: 70 Years of Majestic Style BY BETHAN HOLT The past 70 years have seen a 25-year-old princess transform into a nonagenarian monarch. A woman whose views are never heard, Queen Elizabeth II has deployed fashion to communicate and signal her position to the crowds who see her in public and the millions who watch her television broadcasts. Incredibly, in her 70th year as monarch, the Queen feels as relevant as ever before - and she is, undoubtedly, a style icon. The Queen: 70 Years of Majestic Style celebrates the fashion evolution of Elizabeth II in her unprecedented Platinum Jubilee year. MAY 2022

Want to get
? ” y d a e R y d o B r e “Summ Here’s how to do it?
S
ummer is just around the corner and no doubt many of you will be looking for that next quick fix to get you ‘Summer-Body-Ready’! But let’s face it, you’ve been here before! You’ve tried starving yourself, you’ve tried the fad diets, the weight loss supplements, and you’ve even returned to the same old slimming club…again! And yet, year on year, nothing changes, and you end up trying to lose that same ten to fifteen pounds without success. So, what’s the answer?
It’s a simple one … creating a balanced and sustainable lifestyle! It’s not about looking for that quick fix, it’s about doing the right things repeatedly, being consistent, being disciplined and resisting temptation. Here are three tips that will help you lose that first ten pounds of fat…for good!
1
Eat in a calorie deficit: This means that you need to eat fewer calories than you burn; it’s how all diets work, no matter what principle you follow. You don’t need to ‘cut carbs’ or ‘count syns’; simply use a food tracker such as My Fitness Pal and start logging all the food you consume. Now, reduce those quantities to an amount which will see you losing one pound per week (monitor this by weekly weigh-ins).
8
2
Drink more water: Fill a two-litre bottle with sugar-free squash and aim to have it drunk by lunchtime. Fill it up again and aim to have it drunk by the time you go to bed. Adequate hydration is associated with improved brain health, has a protective impact on the kidneys and helps the body to perform at its optimum. Drinking water immediately before meals may reduce hunger, meaning fewer calories are consumed, therefore assisting in weight loss!
3
Get more sleep: Go to bed earlier! When you sleep, your body recovers, hormones are regulated, and stress levels are reduced. After a good night’s sleep, you’re also more likely to remain focussed throughout the day and more likely to resist cravings. Combine all the above with a diet that’s packed with fruits and vegetables, and conduct a moderate level of exercise, even if that’s just increasing the number of steps you complete in a day. Do all the above and you WILL lose weight! The definition of insanity is doing the same thing repeatedly and expecting different results. Make a change to your lifestyle and finally, banish the body fat for good. No quick fixes, no miracle pill, no counting of syns, just long-lasting, sustainable results that will last a lifetime.
“You won’t be motivated every day, but you can be disciplined”

ALL attendees must register online via Eventbrite Restoration and Healing School, Bourne, Lincolnshire
Please bring your own packed lunch Tea & Coffee will be provided during breaks
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: The Restoration and Healing School aims to teach believers that they have the power and authority to change their circumstances through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, whether that is spiritually, physically, or emotionally. Attendees will learn about helpful spiritual principles as disciples of Jesus Christ: freedom from negative influences, health and wholeness, economic stability, and the right to enjoy a fulfilled life. As biblical principles are taught by the speakers and applied by participants, lives will be transformed for the better!
The school is aimed at individuals: • Wanting to experience more of God’s power in their life. • Needing physical and/or emotional healing. • Feeling alienated from their faith and no longer attending church. • Struggling with re-occurring failures and disappointments. • Needing encouragement and empowerment. • Needing to see a positive change in their relationships (marital, children, friendships, work colleagues, etc).
This school is a great asset to the body of Christ as it encourages those in the pews to exercise the authority that they have as believers, thereby being an even greater support to their respective churches and the wider community. A freewill offering will be taken on the Saturday by those who would like to contribute. Donations can also be made through our charities PayPal account - www.paypal.com/gb/fundraiser/charity/3614779

Mental Health Awareness Week 2022 May 9th - 15th 2022 [ by Lucy Briggs ]
Mental Health Awareness Week is an annual event when there is an opportunity for the whole of the UK to focus on achieving good mental health. The Mental Health Foundation started the event twenty-one years ago. Each year, the Foundation continues to set the theme, organise, and host the week. The event has grown to become one of the biggest awareness weeks across the UK and globally.”
T
– www.mentalhealth.org.uk.
his year’s theme is ‘Loneliness’, something which has affected every one of us over the past two years. Our connection to other people and our community is fundamental to protecting our mental health and we need to find better ways of tackling this epidemic of loneliness. We can all play a part in this.
How can you get involved? The simplest thing we can do is to start conversations. We never know how our friends, neighbours, co-workers, and family members may be feeling. With this year’s theme, it’s the perfect time to make that overdue phone call, grab that coffee you’ve been meaning to for months, or just drop someone a text to say you are thinking of them. Go ahead, brighten someone’s day! Wear a green ribbon to show your solidarity. The international symbol for Mental Health Awareness Week lets everyone know that you care about their mental health - a simple gesture can go a very long way.

Improve Your Sleep
he list of reasons why we skip a good night’s sleep is extensive and the lack of good quality sleep is progressively getting worse with the increase of gadgets, bad habits and the rhythm of our “twenty-four-hour society”.
“You are the biggest enemy of your own sleep” Skimping on sleep can affect your health in more ways than you might imagine. Getting less than six hours of sleep each night has been associated with lower overall brain activity. That affects people’s productivity, physical body, obesity, and the nation’s economy. Inadequate sleep increases your risk of developing psychiatric disorders, such as anxiety and depression, and can also lead to serious health issues like diabetes, heart disease and stroke and it shortens your life expectancy. So, when you miss out on sleep, your brain always pays the price. A study conducted in Italy found that a sleep-deprived brain can begin to eat itself. Chronic lack of sleep leads to irreversible loss of brain cells and increases the brain plaque believed to contribute to agerelated memory loss and Alzheimer’s disease. Getting a good night’s sleep is becoming little more than an elusive dream for many of us. It’s easy to develop bad sleep habits when leading a busy life. To restore proper balance to your sleep cycle, avoid common sleep stealers like caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, daytime naps, and using technology immediately before bed.
Are you tired of being tired? Most of us need around eight hours of sleep a night
to function properly and our brain uses more energy at night than in the day. There are many contributing factors to habitual wakefulness so, if you’re having problems “turning off” your brain at night or staying asleep, hypnotherapy can help to change habits, creating new habits beneficial to your health.
“Sleep solves everything” The good news is that a good night’s sleep can boost your health in many ways such as it boosts your immunity, so you can fend off the bugs. It helps you lose weight; scientists say that sleep-deprived people have reduced leptin (the chemical which makes you feel full) and increased levels of ghrelin (the hunger stimulating hormone). It helps to boost mental wellbeing, helping reduce anxiety or depression. It helps to prevent diabetes as lack of sleep can lead to type 2 diabetes because it changes the way the body process glucose which the body uses for energy. It is said to increase sex drive as it helps to balance hormone levels. It can help ward off heart disease as sleep deprivation increases the heart rate, blood pressure and higher levels of chemicals causing inflammation, all putting a strain on the heart. And finally, it can help to increase fertility by balancing reproductive hormones. If you are not getting enough sleep, or if you’re not feeling refreshed after sleep, Christine at The Beardwood Practice can help. Since sleep disorders often occur alongside other physical and mental health conditions, we seek to understand each patient’s individual challenges. We don’t just treat symptoms; we treat the root of the problem. Our goal is to help you achieve and maintain peaceful sleep.
“Feel reborn when you wake” If your sleeping pattern is disturbed, contact Christine who will be pleased to help.

Patrons Appointed at Young Technicians Academy
Y
oung Technicians Academy are delighted and proud to announce Stuart Gibbons OBE as patron of the Academy, alongside actors Hayley Burroughs and Annabelle Davis as performing arts patrons. The announcement comes as the Academy celebrates six months since opening its first building in Yaxley, near Peterborough. The Academy offers training to young people in performing and production arts, including sound, lighting, stage and event management, and media production. Stuart Gibbons OBE is the joint managing director of Le Mark Group, an international supplier in the arts and entertainment industry. On his appointment as patron, Mr Gibbons said, “The Young Technicians Academy is a unique and much needed facility, training the next generation of events and entertainment personnel. I am
Bourne & District Lions Show Their Appreciation
At a special ceremony recently, Bourne & District Lions Club President, Gordon Lack, was delighted to present a framed certificate to Claire Saberton, Director of the Discovering Magazines Group. The certificate was in recognition of the appreciation shown by the Lions for all the “service, support and co-operation” extended to them over many years by the Discovering Bourne magazine. Claire commented, “It is thanks to the hard work and dedication of all of the Discovering team that I can accept this certificate with great pride.” 22

honoured to be appointed as patron and happy to lend my support to their endeavours.” The announcement of patrons coincides with the launch of its BTEC programme. The first cohort will start in September 2022 and students will be able to choose between performing arts and production arts. These post-16 qualifications are unique to the area, giving learners a wider option for their studies and helping to plug skills gaps created in the industry because of the pandemic. Applications are currently being taken and are available by contacting reception@youngtechacademy.co.uk.
WITTY CITY KIDS FIND THERE’S FUN IN A PUN!
It’s encouraging to discover that the pun is still very much alive and kicking. Earlier this year, Peterborough City Council and Aragon Direct Services launched a competition for school children in the city to come up with names for their fleet of new waste collection vehicles. After lengthy deliberation, the winning entry was chosen as ‘Lambogreenie’, submitted by Year 2 pupils from Queen's Drive Infant School in the city. Other names chosen for the new vehicles as part of the competition, (most of which would certainly “out-pun” our own editor!) include Marcus Trashford, Bindiana Jones, Trash-bandicoot, Chitty Chitty Bin Bin, Bindarella, Mission Bin Possible, Binnie the Pooh, Trash Gordon, Dame Vera Bin, Dustbin Hoffman, Bin and Tonic, Binnie Eilish, Obin one Kenobi, Bin Diesel, Bin Katrashian and Gary Biniker. OPTION B BEREAVEMENT GROUP
Coping with the loss of the one we love is one of the most daunting and difficult challenges of life. Although we don’t have all the answers, we are a group of people working through bereavement following the loss of our husband, wife or partner. Between us, we have a variety of approaches and strategies. There is no right or wrong way of dealing with our situation, but we have found that chatting to other people ‘on the same journey’ can be beneficial. If you feel that this could be what you’re looking for, you are most welcome to join us. Please don’t feel that you have to stay for the whole session - it is informal, flexible in terms of content and a place where all will be respected. This is a confidential service, which means we won’t tell anyone what you tell us (except if we hear someone is harming you, a crime has been committed, you are suicidal with intention of a plan, or someone you know is involved in terrorist activity). We want to keep everyone safe.

Twenty-five Years of Floral Flourishing!
One of Bourne’s most popular independent shops, Stephanies Flowers and Gifts, celebrates twenty-five years at its beautiful, well-stocked, premises in Crown Walk on May 12th. Owner, Stephanie Romaine, looks back fondly over the years which have seen strong competition arrive in the form of new supermarkets offering floral arrangements in the town. Fortunately, the shop’s reputation for top quality fresh flowers and highly original floral funeral tributes, (alongside her friendly, knowledgeable staff), has meant that the business has continued to thrive, in a very challenging economic climate. March saw the sad passing of one of Stephanie’s long-standing delivery drivers, “Geg” Atter, who will be greatly missed, as indeed will Jane Roberts, who, after twelve years, has decided to leave ensuring that the “books are balanced” to someone else in the business!

“Let there be Light!”
Bourne Abbey Church Gets an Electrical Upgrade BY COLEEN EVERITT, ALTO ELECTRICAL LIMITED
I
t’s been a month since we told you about our project at Bourne Abbey, and some
of you may have been able to view the updated lighting during the Easter period. Whilst carrying out this work, it quickly became apparent that the lighting would highlight the paint on the radiators that had begun to flake. Working with conservation specialist, Architettura, we were able to refresh the paint on the high-level radiators, leaving the church with a fresh look. We acted swiftly at the beginning of the project to ensure this could be completed at the same time, meaning that we will now be able to complete our handover this month. Here’s a chance to enjoy the photos of the completed work:
If you would like us to look at lighting at a church you attend, please contact us and we will be happy to offer a free consultation to see what your options are; whether the reason be poor lighting or you wanting to save money, we can help.

Your Garden
M
May Gardening Tips
ay can be a month of extremes so be prepared for late frosts, sunny dry spells, and/or high winds. The biggest threat is to the newly emerging seedlings and plants that have recently been transplanted. If it is hot, make sure they are well watered and give them some shade protection or protect them from drying winds. If there is a late frost, cover your tender crops with fleece, bubble wrap or similar. Seeds that were sown last month, such as carrots, beetroot and parsnips will need thinning out whilst they are still very small. Once they have been thinned out, water along the row and it is better to water less frequently but more thoroughly, as this gets down to the roots. Earth up potatoes when the leaves are about 20cm tall; draw up the earth on either side to form a ridge approx. 15cms high and this will protect the foliage from frost and stop the tubers going green. Keep on top of the weeds by hoeing regularly, preferably in dry weather so they cannot re-establish themselves. Aphids never seem to go away but you can control them by doing any of the following: • Stir together 1 quart of water, 1 tsp of washing-up liquid and a pinch of cayenne pepper. Do not dilute before spraying on plants. • Peppermint, spearmint, and pennyroyal naturally deter aphids and ants, so plant
30
Bourne
(or put them in pots) throughout the vegetable plot. • Plant flowers that attract the pest predators such as marigold and nasturtiums. • Spray the affected plants with soapy water (diluted washing up liquid) or squash the flies with your thumb and finger. Or you can buy organic pesticide. Seeds to sow out this month are too numerous to list, but include carrots, beetroot, French beans, lettuce, spring onions, salad leaves and peas. Succession sowing ensures that you have a continual supply and not a glut of the same crop and is particularly good for salad crops which you need to cut and use immediately. Indoors, sow chillies, courgettes and squashes, runner beans, sweetcorn, aubergines, and cabbages and, towards the end of the month when the risk of frost has gone, they can be planted outdoors. Other jobs to do this month include: • Cover carrots with netting to stop carrot fly damage. • Pot on growing plants. • Put up bean and pea supports. • Pick flowers off new strawberries to prevent them cropping in their first year. • Put some straw underneath developing strawberry fruits to keep them off the soil and try to avoid watering overhead to reduce any problems with mildew. Happy gardening!

Legal Corner
As We Grow Older, What Protections Should be Put in Place? WORDS FROM RICHARD WOOD
W
hen we get a little older, it is always advisable to make a will. This is best dealt with by a solicitor with experience and who will be regulated by the Solicitors Regulatory Authority and who will also be insured. The benefit of a will is that it creates certainty as to what we want to do with our property when we die. It can ensure that our chosen loved ones benefit. This can be very important, especially for couples who co-habit but who are unmarried. If we do not make a will, the state has provided an order of beneficiaries under what is known as “Intestacy” which may mean persons inheriting who are not those who we would want to be doing so. We can also consider making a Lasting Power of Attorney to protect us during our lifetime but especially when we need others to help
us to use our finances to protect our needs. A Lasting Power of Attorney is a legal document that allows someone trusted to make decisions for us if we are no longer able to make decisions or if we no longer want to make those decisions. It could be a temporary situation, such as hospitalisation, or a more permanent one, such as being told that we are suffering from a particular, long-term, health issue. We can consider making a Lasting Power of Attorney for either financial decisions and/or health and care decisions. If we lose capacity or have similar problems, a more complicated procedure is required which requires more work to be put into place. The court fees payable are higher and we must wait longer to be able to have decisions made to protect us. Being in control of these matters can be vital to protect our interests in older age, and it also protects our loved ones.

Property News
Spring into Action! BY KIERAN ARTHUR, SALES MANAGER
O
ver the past five years (excluding 2020), the number of buyer enquiries per property for sale has been highest during March, April, and May (Rightmove). Currently, around 75% of properties are successfully finding a buyer, compared to a historical average of around 50%. Properties are selling, subject to contract, twenty days quicker than the five-year average. With interest rates anticipated to rise in small increments over the course of 2022, spring could be a good time to move.
Newly marketed properties are being snapped up fast, with Rightmove reporting that 22% of deals are agreed within the first week of being listed. This is more than double what was seen at the same time in 2019 and reflects the continued large disparity between supply and demand in the market. Over 60% of agents in the latest Dataloft subscriber poll reported that properties were selling, on average, after four viewings or less. With momentum in the market high, close to two in every five properties (39%) are selling at over-the-asking-price (NAEA). If you are looking to move, there is no better time than now! Give our team a call on 01778 422567 to start your journey today! Source: Dataloft Inform, Rightmove, NAEA.

Morton Church of England Primary School Sporting Superstars
S
port is an important part of life at Morton Church of England Primary School, and we believe that every child should have the opportunity to take part in a wide variety of different sports. Recently, children across the school have competed in dodgeball, volleyball, cross country, football, and gymnastics, just to name a few!
This term we had the exciting opportunity to take part in “The Chance to Shine” cricket programme. It has been impressive to see the children’s skills develop over the term to now being able to apply these in a game situation. We all share a collective passion for ensuring that we celebrate all abilities and give opportunities for those children who have a passion for sport to also excel in this whilst at
school. Furthermore, we want every child to be given the chance to represent the school as part of a challenge or tournament with other schools. Spring saw the ‘kick start’ to our promotion of the #LetGirlsPlay campaign by taking part in the biggest ever football session on Wednesday March 9th. We signed the England Football pledge that, by 2024, every girl in school will have equal access to football. Since then, even more girls have enjoyed taking part in football at break times and lunchtime clubs.

“Artists Open Houses” ollowing a successful art exhibition at the Old Town Hall during our bi-centenary celebrations, we are delighted to share the exciting news that we will be launching our first “Bourne Artists Open Houses” event in July 2022, across two weekends of the 9/10th July and 16/17th July. “Artists Open Houses” connect artists and makers with their local community, for both experienced art-lovers as well as those who might be exploring art for the first time. Selected work from each artist will be displayed in the Main Exhibition in the Old Town Hall over the two weekends, with directions to the artists’ home or studio to view and purchase the work.

60 ANNIVERSARY TH
of Bourne’s BRM Winning the Formula 1 World Motor Racing Championship BRM is an iconic part of Formula 1 Grand Prix motor racing history that was based here in Bourne over three decades between 1950 and 1977. The team started in 197 Grand Prix with 17 victories, 11 pole positions, 15 fastest laps, one Drivers’ World Championship and one Constructors’ World Championship in the same year (1962), and four times runners-up in the Constructors’ Championship (1963, 1964, 1965 and 1971) BRM was the vision of Bourne resident Raymond Mays CBE (1899-1980), a successful pre-war racing driver, and founder of English Racing Automobiles. Mays’ post-war vision was of a British Grand Prix car capable of beating the continental factory teams, and this was achieved with the backing of Sir Alfred Owen and Rubery Owen organisation, from a factory on Spalding Road situated behind his lifetime home, Eastgate House with a workforce that never exceeded 120 people at any one time! Many notable names drove for BRM at differing stages in their careers, including six World Champions Juan Manuel Fangio, Mike Hawthorn, Graham Hill, Jackie Stewart, John Surtees, and Niki Lauda. Other notable drivers included Reg Parnell, Froilan Gonzalez, Stirling Moss, Jo Bonnier, Pedro Rodriguez, Jo Siffert, Peter Gethin and Jean-Pierre Beltoise. 2022 marks the 60th anniversary of the definitive year in BRM’s history when Graham Hill steered his P57 “Old Faithful” 1.5-litre V8 to win the World
Driver’s Championship and, together with the Team and his team-mate Richie Ginther, secured the World Constructors’ Championship for BRM. It was a monumental moment for British Racing Motors, for Britain and for the town of Bourne; a car designed and built completely by themselves, in the town of Bourne, as this was the first time a British driver had won the World Championship in a British car with all British components. BRM and Ferrari remain the only Formula 1 constructors to have won the World Championship with a car designed and built completely by themselves.

CONTINUING THE BRM STORY: We are all conscious there are probably many more BRM memories here in the town – and we would love to capture those before we lose that opportunity.
The vision is to create both a physical and online repository that captures all BRM’s history and the vital and on-going role of the town in preserving this. Watch this space for more information, and please come and visit us at the Jubilee celebrations and talk more on this wonderful anniversary weekend.
There may be ‘in-person memories’, stories that have been handed down, faded recollections, photographs, boxes in attics or garages, or notes, letters or documents that can’t quite be identified.

Making Sweet Music Again …
G
and Seeking New Members!
lebe Singers is a community choir based in Market Deeping, which recently performed at St. Andrew’s Church, Northborough, in their first concert since the Covid pandemic struck in 2020. The choir is made up of several friendly members who all agree that singing is good for the soul, and who relish the opportunity to be out and about again, spreading the musical word! Having previously performed in a number of local churches, and also at Burghley House on several occasions, their latest concert was a very welcome return to singing, all together, once more. Many choirs did not return following Covid, but Glebe Singers did! In fact, they recently celebrated their twentieth anniversary. During the lockdowns, rehearsals reverted to being online, but now the choir has finally been able to return to rehearsing all together, they are busy planning their next concert in July. The benefit to mental wellbeing because of singing has been well documented, and Glebe Singers would be amongst the first to reinforce this. As a community choir, their aim is to bring music to all members of the community, both by performing and encouraging people to come along and become a member. Their repertoire covers a variety of genres, from Eastern European religious pieces to songs from the shows, and much more. Under the leadership of both David Scoffield and Bart Drzewiecki, each week is full of fun and enjoyment as singing once more rings out! Rehearsals take place on Wednesdays, from 7.30pm to 9.00pm in The Green School (opposite St. Guthlac’s Church, Market Deeping). The choir would love to have more people come and join their singing team. No previous

choir experience is necessary, and if you think you would like to meet them at a rehearsal, they would love to meet you! More information about the choir is available at www.glebesingers. org , or phone David Scoffield on 07921 813442. They also have their own Facebook page and can be contacted by e-mail through glebesingers@gmail.com.
JOIN THE GLEBE SINGERS! • Do You Like to Sing? • Do You Want to be Part of a Group Who Like to Have Fun? • Do You Want to Feel Good? We are looking for new members to join our community choir, meeting each week to experience all these things! If you would like to find out more, come along and meet us on Wednesday evenings at The Green School, Market Deeping (opposite St. Guthlac’s Church) from 7.30pm until 9pm. Alternatively, contact David Scoffield on 07921 813442.

Words from the Mayor
COUNCILLOR PAUL FELLOWS
Growing up is, as we all know, an inevitable but complex process that I’ve never been sure we totally accomplish.
I
wonder whether I’ve ever managed to fully achieve the status of being a proper grown-up. Yes, I do a lot of ‘growning’ these days, especially when attempting complicated movements like getting out of a chair or climbing stairs! I have certainly reached the part of my life when I feel just being vertical and, hopefully, coherent for a large part of the day is to be celebrated!
One aspect of growing up is one that ‘grownups’ can find difficult, and that is admitting when you’re wrong. Judi and I were thrilled to be invited to a performance of “Annie Junior”, performed by younger members of Bourne-based dance group, L.D.C. Now, although I really enjoy watching L.D.C. whenever they perform, I went knowing that I really have an aversion to the show “Annie”. I was wrong! The show was fantastic and watching it made me realise that the sugar sweet song, ‘The Sun Will Come Out Tomorrow’ truly reflected the talent, and optimism, of the so very young performers and was exactly what I needed to believe that ‘the sun will come out tomorrow’. As the world around us moves into places I never thought I would ever be witness to, I find myself shouting at whatever device I’m watching the news on:
54
Bourne
“What? You can’t be serious!” “You’re really doing what?” And that’s your answer - telling lies and immorality is OK now then?” “How can you do that to other human beings?” I know that my protestations are meaningless and that no one is listening, but I also know I must carry on having these thoughts and expressing my feelings because it’s how I feel and we must never accept what is dishonest and what is, without doubt, evil. Doubtless, many of you will have felt the same way as I did when I heard, firstly, of a break in and damage to the Butterfield Centre and then, most recently, to the shed in the Don’t Lose Hope Garden. How could anyone, for whatever reason, deliberately target those who work to support the most vulnerable in our community? Please be wary as obviously there are some individuals motivated by stupid and selfcentred actions amongst us. If you know them, do something, don’t just ‘yell at the telly’! I’m positive when I see what we, as a community, are planning for the Platinum Jubilee. I was particularly excited to see that the Round Table have secured three flypasts for the weekend and it’s great to hear about so much being planned in Bourne for the weekend. We need the positivity of being together as a community. We need the ‘sun to come out tomorrow’. MAY 2022

Bourne Town Bowls Club Survives Pandemic WORDS BY CHAIRMAN, BRIAN HUTCHINS
n all honesty, without the superb support from its members and the strong committee, we would have struggled to come through this period, but we did! In 2020, we had no bowling and no social events, and we did wonder how long this would continue and whether or not we could survive.
In 2021, the members all came together and brought about an enormous number of changes. We replaced both roofs on the clubhouse and, with the lottery funding, we were able to convert our toilet block into an ‘accessible to all’ facility, redecorate the clubhouse, and update our bar area, with one member very kindly donating a new triple fridge. An amazing amount of work was achieved in that time.
We also held our first Paul Finch Memorial Fundraising Day where our members raised an enormous £600 that was donated to the Brain Tumour Charity. We also secured a new main sponsor with BSH Recycling. Furthermore, we also obtained funding from Tesco Bourne for a new wheelchair and walker that is designed especially for use on a bowls green which enables us to invite disabled people to bowl. This winter, we decided to open our doors for a coffee morning every Wednesday for two hours, (not only for our members but for the public as well) and this has been very well received. Our talented bingo caller Mel runs a bingo evening twice a month throughout the year with cash prizes. None of these achievements would have been possible without the members, and that is what we are always looking at … how can we attract new members? So, if you are interested in bowling or even just wondered what it’s like, why not give it a try? It would not cost you a penny to have a taster session – all you’d need is just a pair of flat soled shoes. Please call Brian Hutchins on 07974 110504 or Graham Allen on 07905 208825. You never know, it could be the best phone call you ever make!”

Local History
A Warm Lincolnshire Welcome to Refugees
H
Kindly supplied by Alison Ray, Chair of The Aveland History Group (www.theavelandhistorygroup.com.)
ousing refugees en masse from war-torn Europe is nothing new to our area. The generosity of locals has been tested before. The German invasion and occupation of Belgium at the start of the First World War in 1914 caused Belgian civilians to flee to neighbouring countries on a massive scale. At its peak, some 250,000 Belgians took refuge in Britain. This represents the largest influx of refugees in British history. After the end of the war though, only 10,000 remained, about double the number of Belgians living in Britain before the war. The War Refugees Committee was a voluntary body set up in summer 1914 to arrange for refugees to be met at ports and stations, find temporary hostels for them and try to find work for them. The scale of the task was epic. During a single day in mid-August 1914, around 16,000 Belgian refugees landed in Folkestone Harbour, instantly doubling the number of people in the coastal town. Families were allocated, as now, to a variety of
locations around the country. Agatha Christie claimed that she was inspired to create Hercule Poirot, her famous detective, after meeting a Belgian refugee in Torquay! The first family sent to Bourne arrived in October 1914, consisting of a woman, her elderly father and her seven children, the youngest only seven-monthsold. They were housed at a cottage on a farm in Bourne North Fen. Their home in Belgium had been burned to the ground by advancing Germans. The next refugees, a family of four, arrived on Thursday November 26th, 1914, after the Congregational Church [now the United Reformed Church] undertook to house them in one of the cottages that were at the west end of the schoolroom. The Central Committee approved the idea, provided that church members contributed £1 a week towards their keep, and this was agreed. Villagers were also generous in their efforts. Folkingham had a scheme for entertaining and accommodating several refugees; on September 26th, 1914, two more refugees were housed at Pickworth Rectory, and in the same village the Knight family donated a vacant house. Horbling villagers helped to convert the Old Hall into a home for Belgian refugees, who worked on embroidery for Messrs Selfridges (London). The retailer provided the materials and found a market for their work. Rummage sales, concerts and collections were held to assist with the costs and Pointon made use of the upcoming bonfire night by using a “wounded Belgian” as a Guy Fawkes to collect money. .............................................

Fears that vulnerable city residents could fall foul of scammers as spring kicks in has led to an SOS for reputable gardeners to lend a hand. Charities including Age UK are often asked by those using their services to put them in touch with reliable gardening services. However, due to fears that some residents are being scammed by rogue traders who simply knock on doors touting for work, city consumer champion Eileen Le Voi, director of Safe Local Trades, has stepped in to try and help. She said, “Unfortunately, there is no local authority funding to ensure that charities looking after the interests of the elderly and vulnerable have the budget to provide these services – and sadly, too many residents fall foul of the rogues. Safe Local Trades covers a core area of the PE postcode district, from Spalding to St Neots and Stamford to Wisbech. With regular requests for garden maintenance across all areas, we are currently unable to meet the needs of our elderly customers with their request for a recommendation. This increases their risk of becoming a victim to unscrupulous cold callers.” Eileen works alongside charities and local authorities who rely on Safe Local Trades to recommend professionals to their users. She added, “The problem we currently have is that our Safe Local Trades recommended garden maintenance members are so busy that they are unable to take on new, urgent jobs or provide regular garden maintenance across the many areas. Sadly, Age UK had its funding for providing gardening services withdrawn some time ago, and so relies heavily on organisations like Safe Local Trades to step in to assist residents.” She is now appealing to PE postcode gardening businesses, who wish to join existing members to help meet the supply and demand for gardeners. As part of her role with CAPASP, Eileen is the resident expert on doorstep crime for the past fourteen years. Safe Local Trades has been showcasing tried, tested and reliable tradespeople in and around Peterborough – and some of its own members have come to the aid of vulnerable city residents who have been duped out of cash by cowboy builders and other rogue workmen. If you are a reputable gardener, who is prepared to be vetted, to join our register of reputable local tradespeople, please go to www.safelocaltrades. com/become-a-member MA AY Y 2 20 02 22 2 M

SAND A sand consisting of fine rounded particles. This sand is the most common sand used in the construction industry for making renders and mortars due to its fine particle size creating a smooth easily worked product.
LIMESTONE Pure crushed Limestone. Is now widely used as a bedding layer for block paving applications where a SuDS bedding layer is required.
BALLAST Our All in Ballast is supplied in a 1000kg bulk bag and is a mixture of Sharp Sand and Gravel. Ballast is often used to make concrete.
GRAVEL A mixture of angular and rounded stones washed and passed through various screens to create aggregate. Widely used in the construction industry as a drainage medium.
MULCH Wood mulches are some of the most popular choices for gardeners, and for good reason. Wood mulch includes shredded bark, bark nuggets, and straw, and offer many benefits for your garden.

“Sew Far, Sew Good”
for April’s Liberty Lunch Champion!
W
itham-on-the-Hill lady, Teresa Mclean, is delighted to have been nominated as a “Liberty Lunch Champion”. The scheme involves The Liberty Partnership in Market Deeping offering a meal to the value of £100 to anyone who has been recognised for having made a significant contribution to their local community. Teresa’s daughter, Rhi Mclean, recently contacted us with the following suggestion. “I'd like to nominate my mum, Teresa Mclean, and her charity sewing group for the Liberty Lunch. As a volunteer sewer, she currently makes costumes for (the Stamford Shakespeare Company) Tolethorpe theatre. During the main part of the Covid pandemic, she switched her skills and made 161 pairs of scrubs (despite having arthritis and other health issues that often made this quite painful for her) and, in late December 2021, made six more pairs following an urgent appeal from the Peterborough vaccination centre.
Teresa (3rd from the left) with her eating companions at The Waggon and Horses, Langtoft.
Teresa was joined at Langtoft’s “Waggon and Horses” on April 13th by Margaret and Richard Wesson, Nora and Brian Smith, and Jan Limback, who together enjoyed a first-class meal and hospitality. Teresa explained to me that Jan has been responsible for all the valuable publicity on Facebook surrounding all the fabulous voluntary work Teresa and her colleagues have been undertaking over the last two years. Teresa is adamant that nothing she has achieved would have been possible without the hard work, support, and dedication of all the colleagues with whom she has been working on all these projects, and these include the recent organising of donations to be sent out to Poland for the Ukrainian refugees.
When the main requirement for scrubs slowed down, some of the sewers wanted other charity sewing, so she formed a sub-group to make shorts and dresses for the aid charity, ‘Dress a Girl Around the World’ and, by May 2021, had sent 374 garments in total, 98% of these were cut out ready to sew by Teresa herself! After a break for the summer and following funding for fabric, the group have been working through the autumn and winter, once again mainly on packs cut and provided by Teresa. She would like to treat the sewers to tea and cake but is financially unable Some of the many scrubs created by Teresa and her sewing colleagues. to do this on her state pension.”
Having retired has certainly not meant a ‘slowing down’ for Teresa and it was remarkable and inspiring to hear about her enormous ongoing efforts to keep helping others. “At least, the Liberty Lunch will mean someone else will have to cook my lunch for me”, she explained!

Liberty Partnership are delighted to launch
‘The Liberty Lunch’ to celebrate our community champions and those people that go the extra mile
BY RICHARD ASH CHARTERED FINANCIAL PLANNER AND DIRECTOR You may know one of those ‘champions’ who always helps where they can or goes that extra mile for a neighbour, a stranger or a friend, and if you do then we would like to hear from you. Our plan is to offer a modest reward of lunch out at a local pub, diner, coffee shop or eatery up to the value of £100. We would ask that this offer is taken up locally to support our fantastic local businesses. We will select a monthly ‘champion’ from any nominations we receive. When contacting us, we would ask that you say who they are, how you feel they have positively contributed towards our community, and provide their contact information, having asked their permission to do so. Please see this as being a good thing, something to celebrate, a way in which we at Liberty Partnership can celebrate our community. Sadly, we will not be able to recognise everyone, which we hope you all understand.
To make a nomination
Please e-mail us at: thelibertylunch@liberty-partnership.co.uk or write to us or drop a note through our door to: 104 Church Street, Market Deeping, Peterborough, PE6 8AL.

Will & Probate Services
Ethical Wills
It is not just about the Law
ADVICE FROM NICK ASH, MANAGING Director Will and Probate Services
I
Ethics and professional standards are at the heart of everything that we do. guess you would expect that from a law firm. But ethics in business go much wider, bringing in everything from modern slavery to the environment. So, this month I wanted to tell you about our efforts to offset the footprint that our work creates.
Don’t worry though; we have a modern slavery policy, and we make sure that we do everything possible to make our staff as happy and well rewarded in their careers – including a four-day working week for everyone. Our sector is quite old fashioned, and almost everything we do involves lots of paperwork. For the past year, we have been working with ‘TreeNation’ to make sure that the trees that are used in producing your legal documents are replanted. This means we are regenerating forests and offsetting our carbon footprint. In the past year, we have planted almost five hundred trees in the ‘Trees for Tigers’ project in India and, at Christmas, we planted almost a hundred Christmas trees, rather than sending out cards to our clients. Our websites are Net Zero websites, and our team is signed up to the Net Zero team concept, meaning that all our carbon emissions are offset. We are also working with ‘Pawprint’ to empower our employees to fight climate change at home, work and beyond.
So, what does that mean to you as a client? It means that you can be confident that your planning has the minimal environmental impact, whilst making the maximum impact on your family’s future security. It means you will get a tree or two in an area that is helping to support endangered tigers in India. Most of all, you will be helping a local firm to tread lightly on the planet. If you like the sound of what we are doing for the planet and we align with your values, call us for a free consultation on 01778 252301.
