Welcome to your June issue...
W
hat a momentous few days we’re about to witness as June arrives and all eyes will be fixed on Her Majesty the Queen. Hopefully, the weather will be kind, for everyone to enjoy the spectacular range of activities and events which will be offered to celebrate her Platinum Jubilee. The Souvenir Jubilee Brochure for the weekend will hopefully enable you to make the most of it all.
The Bourne Events Team deserve a massive thank you, as do our ‘Discovering’ team as well, namely designer, Graham and our editor, John, whose expertise has been awesome. The Yaxley Festival in May turned out to be a really enjoyable weekend, as we supported the Young Technicians Academy which offers valuable training in the live events industry, and which has made such good progress since opening last year. Finally, love and Happy Father’s Day greetings go to my dad, Bill; father-in-law, Rich; and husband, Chris.

Platinum Jubilee fever is gripping the nation, and we’ll be sharing something truly amazing, as we celebrate Her Majesty the Queen, having come to the throne seventy years ago. Every city, town and village across the land will be hosting events which will aim to bring together communities in a spirit of respect for Her Majesty and harmony with each other. A reminder, (if he hasn’t already dropped enough hints!) that June 19th is Father’s Day, that annual opportunity to give him/me some respite from kitchen and garden duties. My own favourite definition of a father has got to be “a man whose wallet now holds photographs of his children where once there was money!” And finally, I’ve given up asking rhetorical questions. Just what is the point of them? When I once told my teacher, “I think only idiots believe in coincidences”, he replied, “That’s weird; so do I”. Enjoy the read … and the Jubilee!

Community 4x4 Response, is a voluntary organisation based here in Bourne (registered charity number: 1191784) and is made up of people who want to make a difference. Our trained responders offer logistical 4x4 vehicle support to the emergency services, NHS Trusts, and the community during severe weather events, emergencies, incidents and times of need.
JOIN US! Our group is operated 100% by volunteers and donations. If you would like to support us by donating, any amount is greatly received and appreciated. Donations can be made by contacting the Secretary, Struan Cornell on 07764 567958 or lincs.secretary@community4x4 response.com
With increased risk of flooding, extremes of weather and circumstances where remote locations or uneven terrain are involved, the emergency and volunteer services often find themselves without the correct resources. Community 4X4 Response was formed to provide this valuable support in these circumstances. At the heart of our operation are our volunteers, who are a team of four-wheel drive vehicle owners who make their specialised driving skills and vehicles available for the benefit of the community across Lincolnshire. Volunteers without a 4x4 vehicle perform other vital roles operating control, providing 24-hour coverage 365 days a year, as well as many other support functions. Our group works with the emergency services and local resilience forums on live exercises and simulations. We combine social events with training, utilising map reading skills, radio control and other media to exercise skills.
Our members are DBS checked, emergency first aid trained (Level 3) and drivers are trained to use their own vehicles on and off-road, most drivers carry a full range of emergency and survival equipment in order to be prepared for adverse conditions. New members are always welcome, and do not worry if you have little or even no off-road experience. Our team of experienced responders have the collective knowledge and skills to get you ready and give you the confidence to be deployed into any scenario. If you feel that you would like to help the local community, then join us by completing the Membership Application online at www.community4x4response.com or contact the Membership Secretary direct at lincs.membership@ community4x4response.com

Your Garden
J
une heralds the beginning of summer. Not only will your crops benefit from the longer, sunnier days, so too will the weeds! Here are a few tips for keeping them at bay:
• Hoe regularly and particularly when the soil is dry as the severed and exposed roots will die quickly. If you hoe when the soil is damp, remove the remains so that they won’t re-grow. • Spread mulches such as garden compost, well-rotted manure, or bark chips, to suppress weeds or use lightproof membrane to kill more established weeds. • Make sure that you don’t let weeds flower, you will only get new crops of weeds from their seeds. Garden pests can have a devastating effect on crops and, with the latest concerns over chemical pest control, an interesting alternative is using food-grade “diatomaceous earth”, good for slugs and other pests as it dehydrates them. For more information, have a look at “How to Use Diatomaceous Earth for Organic Pest Control in the Garden” (soilseedandgarden.com) As the month progresses, thinning and planting out to final positions will start to overtake sowing as the main activity, as this month offers the last opportunity to sow many seeds. If the weather is dry, then water your seed drills well before sowing – this way the young plants will develop a good root system. It is also your last opportunity for sowing runner beans and main crop carrots. Sweetcorn can be planted out and as it is self-pollinating it is better sown closely in a block. Mark out a square

or rectangle and plant at about 35-40cm (14-18inches) apart in each direction. Other jobs include: • Plant out vegetables that you have grown from seed but make sure you harden them off before planting out in their final position. • Thin out seedlings and plant others in their final growing positions. • Earth up potatoes and, towards the end of the month, harvest earlies. • Protect strawberries by mulching around them with straw to keep mud splashes off, and keep birds off your ripening strawberry crop by covering your plants with netting. • Cut down broad beans and peas just above the surface and use for compost but leave the roots in the ground as a useful source of nitrogen. • Feed tomatoes with a high potash feed. • Once you are sure that frosts are over, you can plant out the more tender crops such as aubergines, peppers, chillies, courgettes, marrows, and squashes. • Succession sow beetroot, salad crops and carrots. • Sow Florence fennel, traditionally after the ‘longest day’, June 21st, as it is less likely to bolt – sowing in succession is a good idea. • Brussels sprouts, leeks, sprouting broccoli and the last of the summer, autumn, and red cabbages and the first of winter cabbages can also be planted. • Protect carrots with insect proof netting and net brassicas to deter pigeons. Remember to keep everything well-watered!

Summer’s Nearly Here GET YOUR GARDEN READY! BY COLEEN EVERITT, ALTO ELECTRICAL LIMITED
What beautiful weather we’ve been having, and I’m sure you have been spending more time in the garden or on your patio, enjoying it and planning what you’ll be doing there over the next few months.
Making The Outside a More Usable and Safer Place:
MY FAVOURITE TIPS
Lighting
●
Make sure that there is enough lighting outside so that you can stay outside for as long as you want to. It can be functional lighting or feature lighting. We have many different lighting options explained on our website, and if you are not sure which type of lighting may work for you, just request a visit from one of our engineers who will discuss your options.
Sockets Outside sockets present different possibilities for everyone, but installing an outside socket makes your installation far more convenient, whilst knowing that you’re not trailing cables through the house. ●
You may have an electric mower or other garden tools which you can plug in.
●
You may have a caravan that you like to power.
●
You may use an electric barbecue.
●
You may have an outside bar and you use an ice-making machine or blender/juicer.
●
You may be a DIY fan and need the power for using your tools.
●
You may like pressure washing and vacuuming your car.
Domestic
It may be that you enjoy sport and would like to take the television outside when the action is on. (Anyone for Wimbledon in the sunshine?)
Outhouse shed power
You may find that you enjoy using your shed or outhouse in your spare time, and whilst the weather allows it, having the power and lighting to be able to complete your projects is much more convenient than running an extension cord from the house. (Fellas – get your ‘man-cave’ lit up!)
Hot tubs
If you are in serious need of some “downtime” or have pain that is remedied by soaking in warm water, a hot tub can be a worthwhile addition. Hot tubs have specific requirements so should always been installed by a qualified and registered electrician.
Heating
Plan for the future and make sure that you have heating around your hot tub or in areas that you like to sit, so that when it’s a bit cooler, but still dry, you can still use your garden. Patio heaters can allow you to use your patio and decking areas comfortably.

Local History
Hereward and Gilbert of Folkingham
I
Kindly supplied by Martin Smith of The Aveland History Group www.theavelandhistorygroup.com.
n Barnack there is an old stonebuilt rectory which was renamed Kingsley House in the 1960s after Charles Kingsley, the author, who lived there as a young boy in the 1820s. Forty years after his family moved on, Kingsley penned a novel about a historical person he had no doubt heard much of while living in the area - the legendary rebel, Hereward the Wake. The novel elevated Hereward’s mythical and romantic status as an indigenous hero, fighting the foreign oppressor, while elevating his parentage to the Earl of Mercia and Lady Godiva. Identification of his hometown of Bourne was based on the story told in the early 12th-century, Gesta Herewardi. The Domesday Book, however, tells us that Bourne was owned by Earl Siward before the Conquest and by Earl Morcar afterwards. It is in the Gesta that we discover the potential relationship between Hereward and Gilbert de Gant (of Ghent), the future Lord of Folkingham. Hereward was banished for a time to Flanders and it may be that he met Gilbert whilst in exile; it is claimed that Gilbert became his godfather. The story goes that they travelled together to Northumbria, where as a test of valour, Hereward slew a bear. This incident is probably a fabrication, but it was adapted by Kingsley into his narrative. A connection between Gilbert and Hereward is certainly plausible. Hereward was a tenant-in-chief of estates closer to Folkingham than Bourne, at Laughton, Aslackby and Rippingale, which were owned by the Abbey of Crowland. He also rented land from the Abbey of Peterborough at Witham-on-the-Hill and Barholm. This would make Hereward a man of high
status, acting as protector of the interests of the abbeys to whom he owed fealty. Following the Gesta, Kingsley tells us Hereward returned to Bourne to find it under Norman control, his brother slain and with Gilbert de Gant’s cook now in charge at the castle. This plunged Hereward into a vengeful fury, whereby he slaughtered fifteen Normans, thus ridding Bourne of the invader. Hereward then moved on to Peterborough and his famous last stand at Ely. Despite the Gesta Herewardi being a fantastical story about an English hero who resisted the Normans, which was further elaborated by Kingsley, the relationship between Hereward and Gilbert de Gant is interesting. Gilbert became the tenant-in-chief of the old soke of Folkingham after the Conquest and Hereward’s lands were situated in former soke territory. So, while it is difficult to prove that Hereward was from Bourne, we can establish a plausible link with Gilbert and Folkingham. This article is based on research from “Folkingham - The Reluctant Town” by Martin Smith which is available to buy from www.folkingham. com/book.
The “vengeful fury” of Hereward the Wake.

COMMENTARY
he Dutch Grand Prix marked the beginning of a new chapter in motor racing with the intro duction by Lotus of the Type 25 car with monocoque as opposed to space frame chassis. At the same time Porsche introduced their long-awaited flat-8 engined car, the Type 804, and Cooper too launched their 162 model, the T60, complete of course with V8 Climax motor. For the first time the four-cylinder cars were in the minority and suddenly Fl motor racing had taken on a sharper, more competitive edge. Trevor Taylor took over Clark's Type 24 and Ginther had to make do with a P48/57 BRM V8, this car originally being intended for Derek Wilkinson. Ferrari had three 1961 cars and were obviously going to struggle for places and Salvadori now had a V8 in his Bowmaker Lola. In contrast to the previous year's event, half the entry retired, no fewer than six through accidents: Pon spun into the sand, Brabham struck Rodriguez' spinning Ferrari, Rodriguez himself crumpled his car late in the race, Surtees had a wishbone break .and went off at high speed, Ireland turned over his Lotus and Ginther was pushed out of the race by Trevor Taylor. Graham Hill remained aloof from such nonsenses and won his first Grand Prix after Clark's new and at that time revolutionary Lotus had clutch trouble.

Easter Egg Hunt Success for Olivia
Congratulations go to nine-year-old Olivia Zimaras who won our Easter Egg Hunt competition in April’s issue. Granddaughter of Ivan (“Pops”) and Jan Fuller who live on West Road, Olivia loves coming to Bourne in her school holidays whenever she can. Her favourite things to do are going to the Wellhead play park and visiting the outdoor pool. She has a brother Theo who no doubt will help her eat all her winnings (an awesome “Chocolate Explosion”)!

Interest Rates on the Rise... Again! BY KIERAN ARTHUR, SALES MANAGER
O
n May 5th, 2022, UK interest rates were raised for the fourth time since December, by a quarter of a percentage point to 1%. This is the fastest increase in borrowing costs in twenty-five years. Inflation is running at 7%, which is more than three times its target and is still rising. This is due to the post pandemicsurge in consumer demand and has been exacerbated by the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The consensus among a poll of economists by Reuters is that the base rate will rise to 1.5% by early 2023 but will remain there for the rest of that year. This remains low by historic standards. Many borrowers will be cushioned from any immediate impact by fixed-rate deals. The proportion of advances on such deals has risen each quarter since the market reopened in June 2020 (94.5% Q4 2021, FCA). If you have any queries regarding interest rates or mortgage options, please give our mortgage expert, Howard Owen, a call today on 01778 422567. Source: Dataloft, Bank of England.

Aspire to Achieve A respected and well-known man of Bourne, Len Pick quietly supported many aspects of the town throughout his lifetime.
O
n his death in 2004, his philanthropic legacy to the town was established with the Len Pick Trust being registered as “a charity for the general benefit of the townspeople of Bourne, Lincolnshire.” At their absolute and sole discretion, the Trustees are empowered to make grants for general charitable purposes to both local voluntary and charitable organisations. The grants are for the benefit of children, young people, the elderly and other charities, or voluntary bodies based within the town of Bourne.
But who was Len Pick?
Len - The Businessman Leaving Bourne Grammar School at the age of fourteen, Thomas Leonard (Len) Pick was, within two years, taking full charge of the management responsibilities of the family’s coal business. Subsequently, he also came to spearhead the successful family wholesale potato merchant business, and was to become a major local landowner, finally retiring in the early 1970s.
Len - The Person Len married his childhood sweetheart, Freda, in 1935 and they enjoyed fifty-six blissful years together until her death in 1991. He was extremely passionate about his hometown and all its workings. Elected to the then Bourne Urban District Council in 1936, he became its youngest ever Councillor at just twenty-seven and remained a member for Bourne until 1948. He was an avid, lifelong supporter of Bourne Town Football Club, both financially and vocally! He was equally passionate about the Bourne Pigeon Club. Much less well known, and totally
in keeping with his character, was his continual and very discreet support of many other town organisations and charitable causes, most notably being the Outdoor Swimming Pool. Len staunchly adhered to a firm set of values. With a reputation as a hard but fair taskmaster, he expected everyone to match his own high standards. But above all, he was a man totally respected by all those with whom he cameinto contact.
Len - His Legacy Len died suddenly on January 29th, 2004, aged ninety-four, regrettably without having had any family. Through his endeavours, Len had become very wealthy, and he was therefore of a mind that his substantial estate should be put to good use for the benefit of the town that he loved so much. Accordingly, he decreed that, on his death, the Charitable Trust that now very proudly bears his name was to be formed.

By Eileen Le Voi at Safe Local Trades The Easter break is traditionally a time when “DIY-ers” and spring-cleaners roll up their sleeves and tackle all manner of jobs around the home. This may include plans to move house or maybe a long-awaited garden makeover. If you are selling your home, then you will want it to look its very best to keep you one step ahead of the competition. Beating the rush means you can start showcasing your property earlier than others, so now is the perfect time to get serious about selling. Alternatively, if a thorough spring clean is on your agenda, then here are our super six tips: 1 Take one room at a time – this way you won’t get overwhelmed by the task and be ruthless with your de-cluttering. Ask yourself, “Does the item make me happy, does it serve a purpose, and when was the last time I used it?” 2 Kitchen: start with the cupboards and then move on to the cutlery drawer (tip: soak teastained teaspoons in a mug of water with a few drops of vinegar), microwave, kettle, and toaster. 3 Bedroom: empty the wardrobe and discard anything you haven’t worn in the past year or if it doesn’t fit. Sell good condition clothes and bag up others for charity. 4 Your working area: maintain a clutter-free environment, going through paperwork, refiling, or shredding as you go along. Have a digital de-clutter too. 5 Children’s bedrooms: encourage them to go through their belongings and donate any unwanted items to charity. In return, treat them to some new bed linen or some new funky storage boxes. 6 Keep walls clutter-free! If you have got newly decorated walls, only put back up pictures and photographs that you really want. If you don’t have the time, skill or confidence to give your home the makeover it deserves, then Safe Local Trades can put you in contact with many reputable and reliable professionals to help make your home sparkle this spring. Whether it’s cleaning or de-cluttering, odd jobs around the home, decorating, bringing new life to your upholstery, installing a new kitchen or bathroom, getting the windows professionally cleaned or your garden landscaped – they have tried, tested and reliable tradespeople for the job; however big or small. www.safelocaltrades.com AJ P URNIL E 2022

Legal Corner
Summertime Arrives WORDS FROM RICHARD WOOD
T
his is the first summer in three years when we can all go outdoors with confidence after the pandemic. Just like with spring cleaning, we may now consider whether we should check and perhaps re-arrange some of our affairs.
At Double and Megson in Bourne we have catered for clients for over forty years, sometimes over three generations. Whether it be moving home or resolving to make a will or lasting power of attorney, we are there for you. In those more difficult times of family issues or disputes, we can point you in the right direction and assist you as required. Dispute resolution and employment can bring other needs.
Taking stock after the last two years, we can all look back at what we have learned. Whether it was how to get wills signed outside, sometimes in the garden, or discussing matters with masks on; we have all been through this together! We thank all our clients and those that we work with for their continuing support and assistance during some very challenging times. We now look forward to a happier future and a summer of celebration and, hopefully, good weather. The legal processes continue to evolve with some Court hearings held digitally. The law can be complex, but we will continue to advise through changing times in a friendly, down-to earth-manner. Our motto is “our business is minding yours”.

Liberty Partnership are delighted to launch
‘The Liberty Lunch’ to celebrate our community champions and those people that go the extra mile
BY RICHARD ASH CHARTERED FINANCIAL PLANNER AND DIRECTOR You may know one of those ‘champions’ who always helps where they can or goes that extra mile for a neighbour, a stranger or a friend, and if you do then we would like to hear from you. Our plan is to offer a modest reward of lunch out at a local pub, diner, coffee shop or eatery up to the value of £100. We would ask that this offer is taken up locally to support our fantastic local businesses. We will select a monthly ‘champion’ from any nominations we receive. When contacting us, we would ask that you say who they are, how you feel they have positively contributed towards our community, and provide their contact information, having asked their permission to do so. Please see this as being a good thing, something to celebrate, a way in which we at Liberty Partnership can celebrate our community. Sadly, we will not be able to recognise everyone, which we hope you all understand.

The Other Side of the Coin BY ANGELA KELLY Angela Kelly has worked with The Queen for twentyeight years, initially as Her Majesty’s Senior Dresser and then latterly as Her Majesty’s Personal Advisor, Curator, Wardrobe and In-house Designer. This special edition of “The Other Side of the Coin” has been revised and updated to mark The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, containing previously unseen chapters covering the Royal Household’s isolation during the pandemic, Angela’s own devotion to service to keep the monarch safe, and the light and laughter that was shared behind closed doors, even in the darkest moments.
BY E. LOCKHART
The thrilling prequel to the TikTok phenomenon and #1 New York Times bestseller, “we were liars”, takes readers back to the story of another summer, another generation, and the secrets that will haunt them for decades to come. A windswept private island off the coast of Massachusetts, a hungry ocean, churning with secrets and sorrow. A fiery, addicted heiress; an irresistible, unpredictable boy; a summer of unforgivable betrayal and terrible mistakes. Welcome back to the Sinclair family. They were always liars.

THE WAKES SCORE MORE THAN £2,400 FOR HOSPICE! Bourne Town Football Club kicked off a day of fundraising for Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice recently, raising £2,455 in memory of two committee members who had been supported by the charity.
O
n Saturday May 7th, players from the town team, as well as their under 17s and 18s and junior sides laced up their boots to play a series of charity matches in memory of Derek Bontoft, who for many years sat on the Bourne Town Football Club committee, and Paula Turner, who was club secretary for the junior sides. Players from as young as five joined in the fun, with the juniors featuring first in the programme, followed by the Paula Turner Memorial Cup match between the Bourne Town Juniors under 18s and Holbeach (Bourne winning 5-1), and a fun game between the senior players and a team made up of the coaches and committee. In addition to the action on the pitch, there was plenty going on for spectators to enjoy, including a barbecue, raffle and the “beat the keeper” competition. Steve Bills, who sits on the committee for both the junior and senior sides, commented, “We were so widely supported by the local community, and I would like to thank everyone who was involved, from the players and their

families and friends who were cheering them on, to those who donated raffle prizes and our match sponsors, JJ Mac Ltd and Ayliff’s Garage, without whom we couldn’t have made the day happen or raise as much as we did.” This isn’t the first time that organiser, Steve, has been at the forefront of fundraising efforts for Sue Ryder. In 2021, he set out to run ten miles a day for 100 consecutive days - which turned out to be 192 days - in memory of Paula. He raised an amazing £5,506 for the charity, which provides expert palliative care, advice and support for people and families during the most difficult times of their lives. Helen Kingston, Community Fundraiser at Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice added: “We can’t thank Steve and the entire Bourne Town Football Club enough for their support and generosity.” It’s not too late to support Bourne Town Football Club in their fundraising efforts. To donate, please visit their JustGiving page: www. justgiving.com/fundraising/steve-bills7 If you would like to find out about ways to fundraise for Thorpe Hall Sue Ryder Hospice, contact the fundraising team on 01733 225 999 or e-mail thorpe.fundraising@sueryder.org.

Young Technicians Academy Help to Make Yaxley Festival the Best Yet!
A
fter a two-year hiatus, brought on by the Covid pandemic restrictions, everyone in the area it seems was eager to make up for lost time, and 34,000 people made Yaxley’s Festival on May 13th to the 15th the best attended on record. Local politicians including Councillor Stephen Ferguson, Dr. Nik Johnson and Shailesh Vara MP, were amongst others in the official opening party which took place on the Young Technicians Academy Sally Rimes Stage. The whole weekend turned out to be one enormous triumph for the Young Technicians Academy (YTA), from which many youngsters grabbed the opportunities of “putting into practice” much of the knowledge and many of the skills gleaned from their studies at their Yaxleybased, specialist educational facility, which trains students in all forms of the Performing Arts, Media, and Live Events industries. In honour of the late Sally Rimes, a second performance stage bearing her name was introduced this year, to accommodate more stage acts than ever before. It was also to pay respects to the lady who passed away in October 2021 and who had been so instrumental

in the development of the YTA since its creation in 2016. Her two daughters and her sister were present to witness the opening of the “Sally Rimes Stage”. The Yaxley Festival provides a vital opportunity for the students from the YTA to involve themselves in all the aspects surrounding the staging of a large-scale event – a “real-world opportunity to show their talents”, according to Business Development Manager, Harrison Fuller. The two bands comprising students from the “Academy of Rock” at the YTA, namely ‘Unit 11’ and ‘Stop, Drop and Roll’ both produced performances of a very high standard of musicianship, and were enthusiastically received, especially the latter on this, their debut gig. Looking ahead, the ‘outreach’ element of the YTA has now been expanded to include primary schools and, working alongside “Festival Bridge”, they are bringing several pop-up festivals to school fields in our area this summer, including six of them within the Elliot Foundation Academies Trust. Finally, there will be an ‘Open Day’ on Sunday, August 21st at the Academy if anyone would like to come down and see what the YTA is all about.

Morton Planning to Revive the Feel-Good Factor! orton & Hanthorpe Events” is a new, non-profit group hoping to follow in the success of the Morton Street Fair with a fete this year on Saturday July 9th. This brandnew event will be held on the Morton playing field in a joint venture with Morton School.
The Street Fair was originally organised to commemorate the millennium but, due to its roaring success, it ran for an amazing twenty years! The committee decided to retire gracefully after years of dedicated organising and, along with the arrival of the Covid pandemic, it seemed that Morton would lose its community feelgood factor that many had looked forward to every year. It seemed fitting, therefore, that a new community event like the Street Fair should be organised to mark Her Majesty
Committee members and children on the Morton playing field site of the proposed event on July 9th
the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. To this end, a new committee was formed, with representatives from village community groups, to put together an event to mark this most momentous year. The event will centre around the playing field at the back of the school, on the school site, and in other venues around the village. Events will run throughout the day, from 10am until 4pm with something for everyone, including live music, refreshments, craft stalls and family entertainment. For a stall booking, or any enquiries, please email mhecommittee@gmail.com. Children pictured enjoying the Committee’s Easter event

Bourne Wheelers Cycling Club Bourne Wheelers has a rich heritage of supporting youth development in cycling, enabling many riders to compete locally, across the county, and nationally. It all must start somewhere, and British Cycling introduced the Go-ride and Go-ride racing programmes some time ago.
K
ey riding skills of starting, stopping, balancing, coordination, control, gear selection and cornering are developed through a series of exercises, all with the emphasis on learning through having fun and progressing individually and together in a group. This has led riders to several disciplines including road cycling, mountain biking, cyclocross, track, grass track and time trials.
The Go-ride activities do have an element of competition, but this is not the priority. The major objective is to have fun on a bike, learn new skills and grow in confidence to be able to cycle more. It does not include any advice on road safety or bike maintenance. These will have to be sought elsewhere and ‘Bikeability’ at school is a very good foundation for safe bike riding on the road. The sessions take place every Monday evening at the recreation ground on Recreation Road in Bourne from 6pm to 7pm. Parents are welcome to spectate while the session is on. The cost is £1 for members and £2 for non-members. Membership costs £5 per year. Other Bourne Wheelers activities include time trials, club rides and social rides. The club runs time trials every Wednesday during the season, over five or ten miles. The club also organises ‘Open TTs’ which are races open to anyone around the country that wishes to enter. There is prize money at stake in these races.
There is a long-standing club ride every Sunday starting at the rear of Bourne Post Sorting Office. This is a “no one left behind” ride of about fifty miles, often with a coffee stop en route. The Saturday Social is again a “no one left behind” social ride leaving Bourne at 9am, between forty and fifty miles again with a coffee stop halfway. This is a slower ride than the Sunday outing. All riders are welcome, whatever their level. The club is getting back to organising longer social rides after Covid. Each year, there is ‘The Longest Day Ride’ which is either a 100 mile or a 150 miler in one day, a charity ride to raise money for a nominated cancer. This year we are nominating Prostate Cancer Research as our nominated charity. Previously, we have raised money for Breast Cancer and Brain Cancer Research. We also have ‘guided rides’ for new and lapsed riders. This is an easy ride to gain confidence and learn road etiquette, which can be arranged to suit an individual rider’s available free time; the aim is to give riders the confidence to ride on their own or in a group. For more information about all these activities, find us on Facebook or visit the club website at www.bournewheelers.co.uk

Skin Booster or Dermal Filler?
T
hese are two of the most popular, nonsurgical, aesthetic treatments in the industry today. With the sector showing no signs of slowing down and the influx of new treatments being introduced on a regular basis, it is important that both practitioners and patients understand the core differences.
Both products are skin injectables, and skin boosters are often misidentified as dermal fillers as they both contain hyaluronic acid as their main ingredient. But there are key differences and a stark contrast in results, delivering two different objectives. Skin boosters work to replenish and revitalise the skin with hydrating properties and aim to improve the tone, texture, and appearance of the skin, rather than increasing its volume. They are also of a thinner consistency than dermal fillers and work from the inside out, providing patients with a natural and rejuvenated glow. The longevity of skin boosters can vary between individuals and lifestyles, and results can be almost immediate with the full results showing two weeks after the treatment. Dermal fillers, by way of a contrast, are known for being the go-to for augmenting the shape and structure of the face, and focus on restoring lost volume, lifting the face, and enhancing the natural facial contours. They create immediate and long-lasting volume and definition, and can be used on areas including the lips, chin, and jaw.

’ in a r t t u ‘O t o n n a C You
a Bad Diet!
S
ummer is coming and many of you will be thinking about shedding some unwanted body fat so that you can feel ‘body confident’ when you begin wearing fewer clothes in the hot weather. Common misconceptions are that running burns fat or spending hours per week conducting some form of cardio burns fat … it doesn’t!
Fat loss is determined by energy balance, not by how much cardio you do. Simply put, if you eat more calories than you burn, no matter how much running you do, you won’t lose weight. So, if it’s not cardio that burns fat, what is it?
IT’S NOT THE RUNNING, IT’S NOT THE CARDIO, IT’S NOT THE WEIGHT TRAINING …
IT’S BEING IN A CALORIE DEFICIT! You need to eat in a calorie deficit, which occurs when the number of calories a person consumes per day is less than the number of calories they burn. The fundamental way in which all diets work is by creating a calorie deficit. The ONLY way to lose body fat (other than resorting to surgery) is to be in a calorie deficit and here is a very simple way to calculate just how many calories you should be consuming per day if weight loss is your goal: For the moderately active person (someone that exercises for three to five hours per week), simply multiply your current body weight in pounds by fifteen. Now subtract approximately five hundred calories from that number, and that’s how many calories you should be eating. E.g., For a 200lb individual: 200 x 15 = 3,000kcals. Now subtract 500 = 2,500kcals Monitor your weight each week and, if you are not losing weight, you know you need to drop
60 58
D I S C O V E R I N G
calories some more. In my opinion, the ideal rate of weight loss is anywhere between half a pound and two pounds per week, depending on your current body composition. To lose one to two pounds per week, a person would need to eat approximately five hundred to one thousand fewer calories than what is needed by their body per day. If you want to avoid feelings of hunger when reducing your food intake, replace higher calorie foods with lower calorie ones, increase your water intake, and eat more fibre. Vegetables and mixed leaves are a great way to bulk out meals without adding excess calories and will help to ensure you stay fuller for longer. So, what’s the ‘take home’ message from all this? You can conduct all the cardio you want but, if you eat foods that are laden with calories and consume more calories over the week than you burn, you will simply not lose weight! Whether you’re looking to lose fat, build muscle or simply get in the shape of your life, I can help you. Top Quality Theatre in a Superb Outdoor Setting
The greatest love story ever told returns to the Tolethorpe stage this summer when Stamford Shakespeare Company finally presents its postponed production of William Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” after a two year wait.
T
he production was well into rehearsals, the set had been built and many of the costumes had been made when the pandemic hit in 2020, and, sadly, the Company was forced to close its doors. It had been hoped to include the production in the 2021 summer season, but the restrictions and social distancing meant it was impossible to perform such a passion-charged play. So, the costumes were mothballed, and the set was covered over to protect it from winter weather.
Now, at last, everyone is back working hard to produce Shakespeare’s immortal tale of star-crossed lovers. The beautiful Renaissance period costumes are being finished off and the set will soon be brought out of storage and any damage caused by the weather will be repaired before the set painters move in. The cast, who have been waiting so patiently, are back in the rehearsal room once more, working their socks off. A few of the roles have been recast 60
Bourne
as some of the younger members of the cast are now at university and, tragically, Nigel Kuhn, who was to play Lord Capulet, passed away two weeks after the end of last year’s season. The Company are determined to produce a top-class show, filled with passion, bloody revenge, bawdy comedy, thrilling swordplay and, of course, some of the most beautiful language ever written.
Alongside that production will run three more fantastic shows: “Spider’s Web”, a comedy ‘whodunnit’ from the ‘Queen of Crime’, Agatha Christie; Noel Coward’s wonderful “Hay Fever”, full of brilliant prose and scintillating wit, and William Golding’s modern classic, “Lord of the Flies”.
The theatre is situated at historic Tolethorpe Hall, just two miles from Stamford. Enjoy a picnic in the glorious grounds, then take your seat, protected from summer showers, and see a stage like no other. The performances take place throughout the summer (June 7th – August 27th). Mediation is a Must
S
eparated couples who have not been able to work out their disagreements over sharing matrimonial assets and/or arrangements for the children, will be familiar with the mediation process which is designed to keep people away from the courts and to find an amicable and inexpensive way of dispute resolution.
It does happen that mediation is sometimes treated as only a ‘means to an end’. That is, the wouldbe court Applicant is not invested in the idea of mediation when they apply for the certificate needed to start litigation. A half-hearted approach to mediation is likely to have to change soon. Last month, there was a case before a Family Court judge when he sent both parties away to mediate about the differences they had over their children. The courts are becoming increasingly frustrated at cases coming before them that seem very suited to mediation, but which have slipped through the net. So much court time is taken up with cases that should never have crossed the litigation threshold. This is likely to apply to finance cases as well in the future, as the courts tackle an ever-mounting backlog of family proceedings. Mediation, especially in children matters, is without doubt the best way to resolve disagreements with the other parent. Consult a Family Law specialist to find out more information about dispute resolution options.

Celebrate YOU!
H
er Majesty the Queen will become the first British monarch to have a Platinum Jubilee, after seventy years of service. Our next Bank Holiday is a special extended weekend, giving people an extra day for opportunities to come together to celebrate this historic milestone.
You can celebrate you too! By celebrating your successes, big or small, or even things which might have felt like failures at the time, can help you feel like you’re living a purposeful, accomplished life, giving you a spark of motivation to move into the future positively.
Acknowledging Your Successes A good start is by acknowledging your successes by writing them down and, as we reflect on those successes, it helps you to design and create the future you. It helps to list them in categories such as career, finances, health, relationships, fun, personal growth, creativity, learning, and much more. By doing this, it helps you not only feel complete but also ready to move forward, and, even more importantly, it directs your attention to your successes and accomplishments, instead of focusing on what didn’t happen or what you could have done better. By focusing on your successes, you simply feel good and when you feel good, you are in a higher emotional state from which to create.
“Be happy with being you”
When we are in a higher emotional state, we can be happy with our own quirks or flaws and even celebrate them because that’s what makes you YOU! It gives you your uniqueness which you can be proud of. Even the most successful people can feel inadequate, but this often stems from comparing themselves to others. As we develop, our talents, skills, and our character traits start to unfold and so do our weaknesses, and they can be exposed in both good and bad ways. Guess what! Your flaws are often your strengths in disguise, such as a daydreamer might be seen as being unsuccessful or a waste of time, yet to be creative you need to be able to imagine new things in different ways and they are perfect for this. So sometimes, if you feel like a misfit when your character isn’t in line with what others approve of, you can simply be very proud of being you and celebrating it by ‘springboarding’ you to where you want to be.

Walking for Wellness
[ by Lucy Briggs ]
We all know that walking is healthy for our bodies, but have you ever considered the impact it also has on our mind? Walking has been proven to boost our mental health – here are a few reasons why…
1 2
Exercise releases endorphins. Endorphins are a neurochemical that improve mental health, and make us feel good. Other activities that can boost endorphin levels are laughing and eating chocolate!
A sense of accomplishment. If you can’t face walking miles, just try going to the end of the road. Doing just a tiny bit is better than doing none at all. I, personally, am not a morning person! I sometimes have to drag myself out to walk my dog, but even if I just go round the block, I feel so much better for it afterwards!
3
Walking alone can be very mindful. I often go for a walk on my own after a day of work. It gives me time to process my day, and have that separation between work and home, which so many of us who now work from home miss out on. Sometimes I like to notice the birds singing, or the wind in the trees, and other times I enjoy blasting my favourite music on my headphones!
60 68

4
Walking can also be sociable! Do you ever find that it’s easier to talk to someone when you’re sitting next to each other in the car, or walking side by side? That’s because without intense eye contact, we often find it easier to talk about things that we may otherwise find difficult. Last month, I wrote about Mental Health Awareness Week 2022 and its theme of Loneliness. To continue, I would love to invite all of you to a new walking group starting in Bourne. Happy Feet Walk and Talk Group will be meeting on Thursdays at 12pm in South Street Car Park for a walk around Wellhead Park, ending at a café for those who wish to stay and chat afterwards. All are welcome, including children and dogs. Routes will be accessible, and the car park is free. This is not a substitute for professional therapy, but is a warm and welcoming group of people who are passionate about mental wellbeing and building connections within the community. Watch this space, or follow me on social media @itslucybriggs for details of all future walks! I hope to see some of you there!

Will & Probate Services
Will & Probate Services:
Emily’s Insights
ADVICE FROM EMILY WALDEN, Legal Case Handler
I started working for Will & Probate Services just over a year ago, and in Nick’s absence (he’s off cycling in Belgium – lucky for some!) I wanted to share some of the things I have learnt in the past twelve months. Having never worked in estate planning before, I was really starting from scratch, but I have narrowed it down to my top five insights!
1
The importance of a Lasting Power of Attorney. Most people either haven’t heard of a Lasting Power of Attorney or have heard of it but aren’t sure what it means. Essentially, it is a document that allows your chosen representatives (your attorneys) to act on your behalf for Property & Finance and Health & Welfare decisions if you were ever to lose capacity. We would all like to think this would never happen to us, but a Lasting Power of Attorney can cover all types of situation, for example being incapacitated after an accident. Having someone you trust manage everything for you during recovery can be invaluable.
2
The sense of relief when your will is written and signed. So many of our clients feel a weight has been lifted when their wills are signed and safely in storage. It is something many people put off for a long time, despite spending a lot of time thinking about it. For most, it is hugely reassuring to know that their family and other beneficiaries will be taken care of when they are gone. The importance of having a will professionally drafted. I was shocked to learn that whereas 98% of professionally written wills successfully go through probate, only 37% of wills prepared at home do so. The message can’t really be any clearer, if you would like peace of mind that your will is legally valid
and will accurately implement your wishes, get professional advice!
4
What is probate? Similar to the Lasting Power of Attorney, probate is one of those things that people hear about, but don’t really know what it is. In short, it is the administrative process following a person’s death. The executors will be required to get valuations of the deceased’s assets, apply for the Grant of Probate, pay any inheritance tax liabilities, and finally distribute the funds to beneficiaries. This is a process executors can manage themselves, or they can get professional help from ourselves. Not all law firms are the same. Before working at WAPS, my idea of a law firm was a huge glass office where everyone walks around in power suits shouting orders at each other. I can say that WAPS is absolutely nothing like that; we are a friendly bunch who care about doing the best by our clients. And, on that note, we would love to help you out with any questions you may have around any area of estate planning. We are just at the end of the telephone on 01778 252301 and offer free consultations for any in-depth discussions.

RELIABLE AND EFFICIENT CLEANING SERVICES ✦ DBS checked and fully insured ✦ Cleaning and housekeeping to high standards ✦ Supply equipment and materials ✦ BICS qualified ✦ Offer one off or regular cleans

T E taylormaiddcleaning@gmail.com
● ask them to do it again if it’s possible, ● ask for a discount.
Get the service done again or get a part refund
SOLE TRADER & SMALL COMPANY SPECIALIST
The law says you must first give them the option of providing the service again if it’s possible for them to do so. But you’re legally entitled to go straight to getting a discount if any of the following apply: ● it’s not possible to get the service done again, ● it would take too long to get
the service done again,
QUALITY, FRIENDLY SERVICE
Deal directly with a person who understands your business structure and your needs. Bookkeeping ● Accounts Production ● Payroll Personal Tax ● VAT ● Business Tax
● it would be very inconvenient for you
to get the service done again.
The trader might agree to give you a discount rather than re-do the service if that’s what you’d prefer - you’ll have to ask and see what they say.
07716 678056
If you told them that their service was good enough when it was done, you don’t have the legal right to get it done again or get a discount.
If you don’t notice a problem straight away It might not be obvious at the time that the service wasn’t done to a good standard, for example you hired a ‘man and van’ to help you move house and found a broken ornament three weeks later. You’re entitled to ask for things to be put right for:

Words from the Mayor
COUNCILLOR PAUL FELLOWS
Welcome to our celebrations for the Platinum Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II
F
or the vast majority of us, Elizabeth II has been our queen and head of state for all our lives, and now we can, as a community, join her for a celebration of her phenomenal service to our country. And what an amazing and inclusive celebration in Bourne it’s going to be! Over four event-filled days, there will be opportunities for everyone in the town to join, with pride, to mark this historic moment.
a fabulous firework display. Unfortunately, close access to both activities will not be possible to the public, but both should be very visible from wherever you are in the town. Access to all our other planned events is listed in the souvenir programme and will be easy to join in, so please do so!
Our celebrations will be following national guidelines and will be officially started with the lighting of a beacon, joining communities across Britain lighting their own beacons, to bring our nation together with this one simple act. The festivities will be concluded with
A huge thank you to all who have, and will, contribute to making this weekend a massive success. Nobody does this better than Bourne. Everything that is happening will be listed in the programme, with the exception of the enthusiasm, inclusion and good-hearted fun that you, the people of Bourne, will bring to the weekend. Enjoy, and involve, yourselves. Have a great, and safe, time with absolute consideration for our town and everyone in it.
Happy Platinum Jubilee!
