Welcome to your July issue...

W

ow, what a fabulous, fun-packed month that was! It was really heartwarming the ways in which whole communities came together to share in celebrations for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, and I’m sure memories of the four-day weekend and all its various activities will live forever in our minds.

Some things which a town or a village decide to organise so that everyone in that community can get together don’t just happen – it’s always down to a small number of individuals who selflessly give their time and commitment to ensuring that everything works according to a plan. In Bourne, most of the planning and ensuring that everything went ahead was in the capable hands of the Bourne Events Team and Bourne Town Council, and it is to those willing volunteers that a huge thank you is offered. Similarly, for all the other towns and villages within our “Discovering region”, take a bow all you fixers and shakers. Well done, every one of you!

“What an Amazing Mon “ The Platinum Jubilee celebrations certainly put our town of Bourne on the map, and showed everyone’s respect for the Queen” concluded Discovering Magazine’s Director, Claire Saberton, as she looked back on a most eventful and, at times, exhausting, few days at the start of June.

C

laire had the pleasure of being involved with both the Bourne Events Team and Bourne Town Council, all members of which had been extremely busy in the lead-up to, and during the weekend itself, and all of whom deserve a massive thank you for all their dedication throughout. The previous week had seen Claire meeting the ladies from Bourne Flower Club, whose skills and imagination were to result in some beautiful floral tributes to the Queen. Thursday

June 2nd, and the lighting of the Jubilee Beacon officially signalled the opening of the extended weekend of fun and excitement, as the Round Table Festival began its fourday programme on the Wellhead. On Friday, Claire was at the spectacular Jubilee Dinner at the Corn Exchange, where a delicious meal was followed by some very energetic boogieing, which served to act as a warm-up for the Saturday festivities. For Claire, this began at 6.20 am, where she and her longest-standing school-friend, Helen, were involved in the positioning of the stalls along a JULY 2022

stretch of North Street, followed by her acting as M.C. on the main stage in Bourne Market Place. “It was truly amazing to see so many people enjoying the day, especially admiring the BRM racing cars on display”, she commented. Unfortunately, the weather took a serious turn for the worst on Sunday, but despite this, many people took part in the Street Parade, led by Rick Hall, (proudly driving BRM’s very first V8). Huge thanks to everyone involved in this, also the Fancy Dress competition. The whole weekend was concluded with the Fireworks J U LY 2 0 2 2

Finale on the wildflower meadow, whilst the Round Table were delighted to announce that record numbers had attended the Festival. The list of individuals and businesses who deserve our thanks (for either attending, helping, producing some fabulous shop window displays, sponsoring, or generally just making the weekend so successful) would be enormous; suffice to say, huge thanks to everyone… and we now look forward to the next Bourne Events Team/ Bourne Town Council “production”, the “Christmas Fayre, and Lights Switch-on” on December 3rd!

Mayor

Words from the New Mayor

COUNCILLOR ANNA KELLY

When I agreed two years ago to be the Mayor of Bourne for 2022/23 I had no idea that my first two weeks would be such a whirlwind of activity.

U

sually, one to enjoy watching others in the limelight, it could have been a real shock to be thrust to the centre of events but, overall, the biggest surprise for me has been to discover how genuinely the people of Bourne have welcomed me to this role and encouraged me with their supportive comments and pleasure at seeing me become the Mayor. Having been a Town Councillor since 2015, I have seen first-hand over the years the generosity of many residents within the parish when it comes to making things happen for the benefit of everyone, and The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations were no exception. Bourne can be proud of celebrating in style with four fun-filled days; a busy street market, entertained from the stage by local talent; the BRM display, supported by further activities in the Old Town Hall; beautiful flower displays by local groups; and an excellent array of decorated shop windows. At Elsea Park, food was a big theme with a Bake-Off competition and a hog roast; I can vouch for both

being utterly delicious (how great to judge a BakeOff competition... all that tasting!) Dyke village had a fete and Open Gardens, and the Round Table Beer and Music Festival across the four days added to the variety of the celebrations, whether it be fair rides, bands, or beer. On Sunday, fair weather was in short supply, but so many people, undeterred by the rain, came out to parade and line the route through the town and continued to enjoy themselves. The MG car show braved the weather at the Red Hall and the four days of celebration were brought to a close by a stunning fireworks display. What a great team effort by local organisations who came together to make it all happen! Teams made up of people who again, in the limelight or working in the background, made a fantastic celebration for everyone in Bourne. JULY 2022

Anti-wrinkle Treatments vs Fillers

B

What’s the difference and how can they be used together?

otox is a purified form of the botulinum toxin that can be used in small amounts to correct wrinkles and, by interrupting the nerve signals, the injected muscle is temporarily frozen. Without movement of these selected muscles in the face, certain wrinkles can be softened, reduced, or even removed. It can be used on the upper face to treat areas of concern such as the forehead, the glabellar (between the eyebrows) and crow’s feet at the side of the eyes. It can also be used to lift the eyebrows in a non-surgical brow lift. On the lower face, it can be used for lip lines, gummy smiles, wide jaws, and neck lines. Botox for the body is typically used to control excessive sweating. These treatments last typically for three months with the most effective time being six weeks after treatment. Dermal fillers are largely used to help restore lost volume to the face and hands, as well as accelerating the production of collagen in the skin where it has been depleted due to the ageing process. They are commonly used to treat lines and wrinkles, marionette lines, thin lips, nasolabial folds, jowls, and sagging skin. These typically last twelve months with the results being immediate. Even though Botox and dermal fillers are very different types of injectables, they complement each other perfectly. By combining them, different types of wrinkles can be treated and while one relaxes muscles, the other smooths them out. Both treatments are non-invasive, well tolerated by patients and very little ‘down time’ is needed, as they offer a great alternative to surgery. Why not come and meet us and let us help you freshen up those looks, once and for all?

The Magic of Music

[ by Lucy Briggs ]

Music is such a huge part of my daily routine, that I often take for granted how much it helps my mental health.

I

listen to it as I get ready. I listen to it as I work (currently playing: Kate Bush – ‘Running Up That Hill’). I never leave the house without my headphones, and I have spent countless weekends in muddy fields, or evenings in sweaty venues, singing along as I watch my favourite acts play live.

But how can enjoying music help our mental health?

1

Lyrics. I find that most of my favourite songs have words that I can identify with that give me strength, and don’t make me feel so alone. If you have trouble hearing them, a simple Google search will bring up the lyrics to any songs. Spotify now even has a ‘Lyrics’ function!

2

Bringing enjoyment to mundane tasks. I absolutely hate housework. But if I pop on an energising playlist, that all changes! Think Freddie Mercury hoovering in the Queen video for ‘I Want To Break Free’. Allow yourself to dance and make your chores more fun. I promise you; it will zoom right by!

8 60

3

Dancing! Move your body to the music, in whatever way you can. It is a well-recognised fact that exercise boosts endorphins, which make us happy. It doesn’t matter if you can’t dance well; feeling the rhythm is all that matters. As those home décor posters say, ‘Dance like no one’s watching’!

4

Singing. You don’t have to be the next Adele to sing along to a song. Get in the shower, go for a drive, and sing your heart out. Did you know that singing reduces stress, anxiety, depression, and helps to lower your heart rate? Last week, I attended a fabulous new group in Bourne called ‘Find A Voice’, which is a choir for mental health sufferers. The group will meet every Tuesday evening at 7pm in the Butterfield Centre, and is run by a wonderfully welcoming woman called Emma. I had the time of my life, and I highly suggest you check out ‘Find A Voice Choir’ on Facebook for more details. Until next time, take care of yourselves.

To Lose Weight, You Need to Know Your

“Why?”

T

ypically, at this time of year, many people are looking to lose weight. If this is you, ask yourself right now why you want to lose weight. Be honest with yourself. Nobody wants to lose weight “just because”. There is always an underlying reason, but some won’t be truthful as to what that reason is. Right now, I want you to have a conversation with yourself.

Why do you want to change your body? Ask yourself, “Why?” again, and again and again. Usually, when you have asked, “Why?” for the fifth or sixth time, you’ll reach the real answer as to why losing weight is important to you and it will be so much more than “just because”. If you want to improve your health because you’re in danger of not living past sixty, or missing out on your children growing up, or missing out on playing with your grandchildren, then that is all the motivation you need to change your lifestyle. Be honest with yourself. Is the real reason you want to lose weight because you want to impress others? You would be surprised at how many people say they’re doing something for themselves when they only care about external validation. This is the weakest “Why?” of them all and if you enter into a weight loss process with the sole goal of impressing others, you’ll fail. No one else is going to put in the work for you. No one else is going

60 16

D I S C O V E R I N G

Bourne Bourne

to say, “No” for you when you’re about to reach for that second helping of dessert. No one else is going to work out for you. At some point, temptation is going to stare you right in the face. If your “Why?” isn’t strong enough, you’ll find an excuse, some form of justification to yourself as to why your goal doesn’t matter at that moment in time. What’s going to be stronger than excuses and temptation? It’s going to be that focus of how you’ll feel when you’re truly happy with your body; the increased confidence you’ll feel in social situations or the knowledge that you’ve improved your life expectancy, ensuring you can make more memories with loved ones. Your “Why?” is one of THE most important things that will keep you going when you feel like making excuses. Ensure your “Why?” is always at the forefront of your mind and it will be the driving force that prevents you from quitting and that keeps you disciplined when you get tired, frustrated, or disillusioned with the process. So, I’ll ask you again, “WHY do you want to lose weight?” Whether you’re looking to lose fat, build muscle or simply get in the shape of your life, I can help you. You can find me at: adamnorthovertransformations Adam Northover: The Body Transformation Specialist. You can also email me directly at: AdamTransformations@hotmail.com.

Stopping Smoking?

M

any people ask me if hypnotherapy can help them give up smoking; well hypnotherapy has the reputation for being the best way to quit smoking. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can help someone who is determined to quit smoking for good by using your imagination to create a non-smoking future which is positive, empowering, and allows you to take control not only of your smoking habits, but of your life.

“Believe you can and you’re almost there!”

Benefits of stopping smoking are amazing – You will: ● have

a decreased chance of having a heart attack after 24 hours of stopping. ● Improve your immune system. ● No longer be burdened by a nasty habit. ● No longer be taking in 4,500 celldestroying chemicals. ● Learn to control cravings. ● Have more energy. ● Learn to control stress. ● Have skin with an improved appearance. ● Feel healthier, with improved breathing and fitness levels. ● Reduce the risk of developing illnesses. ● No longer smell of tobacco smoke. ● Enjoy the taste of food more. ● Feel happier, more confident, and more in control. ● Improve your fertility levels. ● Save money and spend money on things which can improve your quality of life, rather than undermine it. ● No longer endanger those around you with ‘passive smoking’. ● Feel more socially acceptable.

The stop smoking hypnotherapy session works by first explaining why the brain fools us into thinking it is acceptable to smoke. The hypnosis part of the stop smoking treatment is a key stage to cementing the change, during which the client experiences around forty-five minutes of hypnosis. During the hypnosis process, the subconscious mind effectively “rewires” itself to help the person’s willpower and commitment to smoking cessation. The stop smoking hypnotherapy formula works regardless of how many cigarettes you smoke or how long you have been smoking. The treatment is tailored to you as an individual, so you can get the best out of your life. It helps you to realise your full potential, in a relaxed comfortable environment.

“You are greater than your addiction so stop easily...TODAY!” If you would like to book an appointment or find out more about how to quit smoking for good, please contact Christine on: 0780 9690 964 or contact@ beardwoodhypnotherapy.co.uk.

The House of Fortune

Murder Before Evensong

BY JESSIE BURTON

BY THE REVEREND RICHARD COLES

The sequel to the million-copy bestseller, “The Miniaturist”. In the golden city of Amsterdam in 1705, Thea Brandt is turning eighteen, and she is ready to welcome adulthood with open arms. At the city’s theatre, Walter, the love of her life, awaits her, but at home all is not well - her father Otto, and Aunt Nella argue endlessly, and the Brandt family are selling their furniture in order to eat. On Thea’s birthday, also the day that her mother Marin died, secrets from the past begin to overwhelm the present, and when Nella feels a strange prickling sensation on the back of her neck, she remembers the miniaturist who entered her life and toyed with her fortunes eighteen years ago. Perhaps, now, she has returned for her. “The House of Fortune” is a glorious, sweeping story of fate and ambition, secrets, and dreams, and one young woman’s determination to rule her own destiny.

Canon Daniel Clement has been Rector of Champton for eight years, living at the rectory with his widowed mother, Audrey, and his two dachshunds, Cosmo and Hilda. When Daniel announces a plan to install a lavatory in church, the parish is suddenly divided, and long-buried secrets come close to destroying the apparent calm of the village. Then Anthony Bowness (cousin to Bernard de Floures, patron of Champton) is found dead at the back of the church, stabbed in the neck with a pair of secateurs. As the police move in and the bodies start piling up, Daniel is the only one who can keep his fractured community together ... and catch a killer.

But when she stumbles upon a secret museum hidden in the middle of town, she realises that there might be more to her new home than meets the eye. A hugely gripping, fast-paced mystery adventure, with brilliant twists and turns, for middle grade readers.

Balkans Veteran to Represent RAF Benevolent Fund in Israel’s Veteran Games

A

n RAF veteran from Bourne will take part in the forthcoming Veteran Games in Israel, representing the RAF Benevolent Fund, the RAF’s leading welfare charity. Flight Lieutenant Carl Harding joined the RAF Regiment aged just twenty and in 1992 he found himself deployed to the besieged Bosnian city of Sarajevo during the Balkans War.

In 1997, Carl's RAF career was cut short when he was involved in a serious motorcycle accident, which left him in a wheelchair. The RAF Benevolent Fund stepped in, and supported Carl with a Housing Trust property suited to his, and his family’s, needs. Now Carl is set to take aim at the shooting competition at the Veteran Games, which will take place from May 29th to June 3rd in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. Carl said, “I think everyone should strive to be part of something much bigger than themselves. In the Armed Forces, you are connected to systems and people to the extent you never give it a thought. When you become a veteran, that connection is broken, leading to a tendency to always look back.

Being part of the Veteran Games rekindles past connections and friendly banter, as you make new friends, who are in a similar situation to yourself. The Veteran Games in Israel gives an amazing chance to meet service personnel with completely different backgrounds. Being able to be an ambassador for the RAF Benevolent Fund is a great privilege and being able to go to events like this promotes self-confidence.”

The Veteran Games recognise the fundamental role played by sport and family in supporting the ongoing recovery of veterans who have suffered physical and psychological challenges as a result of serving their country. The RAF Benevolent Fund provides financial, emotional, and practical assistance to serving and retired RAF personnel and their families. This includes grants to help with financial difficulty, free memberships for Headspace, Airplay youth clubs, and more. In 2020, they spent £26 million supporting more than 63,700 members of “the RAF family”. For more information, visit: www.rafbf.org. twitter.com/RAFBF.

Jubilee Shop Window Competition: Rosedale Smashed It! “We won! Although, firstly, we’d like to say that all the window displays in Bourne looked fabulous and we thoroughly enjoyed seeing them; it was a brilliant effort by everyone! We had so much fun coming up with ideas and putting the window together; it was a real pleasure to be a part of the marvellous celebrations that were organised by all the teams of volunteers in our lovely little market town (they really don’t get enough credit!)

an even bigger thank you to everyone for taking the time to vote for us. We can’t wait for the next big event - watch this space (or window) as some might say. Finally, we mustn’t forget an extra thank you to Her Majesty for the extended Bank Holiday (and seventy years of service)!”

Thank you also to the YMCA for lending us the ‘model’ that transformed into the Queen herself; thank you to Justin Stubbs for the Airfix ‘fly-over’; and 22

Bella and Graeme Hull Fly Away With Fancy Dress Prize Young Bella Hull’s fascination with American aviation pioneer, Amelia Earhart, helped her and her dad, Graeme Hull, scoop the first prize at the Jubilee Weekend Fancy Dress Competition on June 5th. Bourne Abbey Primary Academy pupil, Bella (6) had played her American heroine in a school play. Donning her costume once more, and, after strapping herself and her dad into their contraptions (painstakingly created by Graeme), they flew away with the £50 prize. How fabulous then to hear that the Hulls are donating the £50 to Bourne’s Willoughby Academy, where mum, Hilary, works, and where it will help towards financing costumes and scenery for a forthcoming production of “Charlie and The Chocolate Factory”.

Paul Hamlyn Foundation Fund to Benefit Westfield

B

ourne Westfield Primary Academy are delighted to announce their success in a bid to be awarded £150,000 ‘Teacher Development Fund’ by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation. The successful bid, entitled ‘Creativity Hive’, has secured funding to run a two-year, enquirybased learning project across the Keystone Multi- Academy Trust which will focus on using music to build solid foundations in oracy, vocabulary, reading and comprehension. From September, children and teachers in Year 3 will work with specialist music and drama teachers, as well as specialist arts practitioners in ‘rap’ and digital media. The project will work with key partners that will include Lincolnshire Music Education Hub, TMC (bridge organisation for the Arts Council) and Charanga Education team.

J U LY 2 0 2 2

Rebecca Beavis, Creative Arts Director for the Trust, said, “We are absolutely delighted to be awarded this funding. As a Trust, we are absolutely committed to providing our children with a first-class, diverse, and rounded education and our Creative Arts provision is intrinsic to this. This funding will allow us to build on our current provision, develop expertise across all our schools and work with an exciting range of artist practitioners and partners. We are very excited about the forthcoming academic year.” Mrs Elaine Radley, Trust CEO, said, “The success of our bid application will enable us to realise our long-term strategic plan for our Trust to ensure that all children access excellent quality Creative Arts provision, building cultural capital and staff expertise through an engaging and inspirational curriculum and extracurricular provision.”

Edenham Primary School Benefits From ‘The Great Outdoors’!

A

t Edenham it is our vision for all children to have a love of learning, a love of the environment and to be prepared for the future. Everything we do is built around this, which is why ‘Outdoor Education’ is such a key part of our curriculum.

It has been fantastic to be able to give our older children ownership of different areas around school and work in collaboration with the community to start some great projects which provide exciting opportunities within our school grounds. The children are now in the final stages of transforming our pond area and allotment where we will shortly be installing a polytunnel. This will involve working closely with the Grounds Team from Grimsthorpe Castle, our Bishop Visitor and local construction company, T Whittle & Son Contractors. Our children have been able to see the whole process through, from

Edenham CE

designing to building. Keep an eye out on our Twitter page to see the completed projects. Our youngest children also benefit hugely from this area of the curriculum. Using the outdoors, they have created stories, then performed them on their own stage, as well as retelling some of their favourites. They have been able to immerse themselves in the whole process, increasing their vocabulary, whilst developing a love for stories and so much more. If you want to find out more about what we have to offer, please do not hesitate to contact us: Email Edenham.enquiries@southlincs-hub.co.uk Phone 01778 591207

How Alto Electrical Can Help Save You Money BY COLEEN EVERITT, ALTO ELECTRICAL LIMITED

With energy prices going up, this article is dedicated to saving you money, and there are many things which you can do yourself to make a difference.

1 2 3

“Go LED” - If you have not done this yet, it’s time to start now. I am still surprised when I go to houses to find halogen fittings still in use. Change them straightaway; these get so hot that they are a fire risk, and they are not manufactured any more for this very reason.

If your excuse for not doing this is that you want to wait until the fittings have expired, don’t wait. The sooner you change them, the quicker you’ll notice the difference in your bank balance (plus, you don’t want the additional heat in summer!)

Use timers. You can get these cheaply and, if you are ‘tech savvy’, you can get plug-in devices that you can control by “Alexa”, or other similar product. These can be automated, and even voice and movementcontrolled. You can let your imagination run wild!

4 5 6

Is your boiler programmed properly? Don’t just keep it on all the time; be smart and make it work for you. Make sure it has a thermostat, and that it’s positioned correctly. Are fixed items like towel rails/electric heaters and tanks on timers? Get them installed, and this will save you so much money!

Are you throwing money away? Make sure your appliances are energy efficient. If you have electric heating that’s been in a long time, it’s likely that upgrading the system will save you a small fortune. Modern heaters are so energy efficient now, and much more convenient than storage heaters.

7

Do you have any electrical faults? If you’re not sure, don’t just sit on it. The electrical regulations recommend an ‘Electrical Report’ every five years, or at change of occupancy. If you’ve not had one, get it booked in now. Identifying and fixing faults can stop unnecessary costs. If you are not sure how to go about implementing this advice, you can book in via bookings.altoelectical.co.uk for a visit and we can help. All advice is complimentary, and, for any electrical services, we will provide a quote for your consideration.

Quality Roofing Work at a Sensible Price

t a time when so many people are finding it difficult to afford to pay huge repair bills, it is encouraging to find tradesmen in our local area who are prepared to take on even the smallest of jobs to keep their customers satisfied. A local roofing contractor, Randall Smith, is happy to describe himself as a “one-man-band”, who has been self-employed since the age of seventeen.

Now, having established a name for himself as a reliable and reputable roofer, Randall (28) is keen to offer his expertise as Randall’s Roofing, within the Bourne and

J U LY 2 0 2 2

Stamford area, including the villages in between. Randall’s Roofing are willing and more than able to take on everything roof-related, from small repairs to whole roof replacements; from repairing a leaking gutter or damaged soffit to installing whole new guttering and fascia systems. Besides the regular tiling and slating work, Randall has recently been installing several dry-ridge systems, where a damaged ridge of tiles can be repaired by covering with a hard plastic capping. This is a very good, cheaper alternative, which is an example of how Randall is keen on keeping down costs wherever possible, whilst still providing a high-quality solution. So, if you’re wanting your roofing issues dealing with, however small, why not get in touch with Randalls Roofing for a free quotation?

BRM Exhibition Rekindled Mem

S

aturday June 4th was a celebration of ‘all things BRM’, with Hall & Hall displaying a selection of iconic cars for everyone to enjoy. Fans relished the opportunity to see the cars close-up, and there were many more people unaware of the town’s wonderful motorsport history and who were appreciating the opportunity to learn more about it. The Old Town Hall housed a BRM Exhibition and the BRM Cinema. Over 1,200 people came through the doors to find relatives, friends and work colleagues in the many photographs displayed, and faces lit up with sheer joy when they found who they were looking for, be it father, mother, uncle, aunt, or friend – and on the odd occasion, recognising themselves! Former employees shared memories, remembering with fondness those with whom they had worked, had lost contact with, and those who are sadly no longer with us. Young children and teenagers asked many questions about the history; something that some of them knew so little about. They listened with interest to the many conversations going on, with their eyes popping at the thought of a racing car driving through Bourne on a Sunday lunchtime. The large photograph of the factory site created great interest – most had no idea it was now the Auction Rooms on Spalding Road. Several Eastgate residents remembered the noise of the cars being driven down the road by Raymond Mays. The Cinema upstairs played to packed houses, with the thirty-minute film of the different races from the 1962 season and finishing with the iconic V16 footage from ‘The Reawakening’. We are delighted to announce that the BRM Cinema will be back in the autumn, with footage, old and new. It was a wonderful day, with memories awakened and new ones gained, as the younger generation start to realise the rich history of motor racing in their small market town.

mories of a Glorious Past

T

Looking Back on BRM’s Famous Year aking the clock back sixty years, May 1962 had seen a glorious win for BRM with Graham Hill’s famous victory at Zandvoort, though June was to start with disappointment for the team at the challenging Monaco circuit. Richie Ginther was out of the race with a loss of a wheel soon after the start, and Graham Hill, having built up a commanding lead, had to retire with thirteen miles to go; the cause being a seized engine. The next World Championship race was the Belgian GP at Spa on June 17th, with Hill qualifying

in pole position. The race started well with Hill leading, though Jim Clark began to move up the field, and Hill’s BRM started to misfire. Willy Mairesse in the Ferrari and Trevor Taylor in the Lotus were also in there until the Lotus hit a telegraph pole, and the Ferrari overturned. Luckily, both drivers escaped with only minor injuries. In the end, Hill came in second; Richie Ginther had been forced to retire with gearbox failure. Clark’s victory was his maiden F1 World Championship GP victory; was this an omen for the season? Next month would see both BRM and Lotus back on home soil for the RAC British Grand Prix at Aintree.

Quality Products and Personal Attention to Detail

illarys is a manufacturer and retailer of made-to-measure window blinds, window shutters, curtains, bi-fold doors and awnings. The company was formed in 1971 and sells its products via a network of approximately 1,200 self-employed advisors across Great Britain and Ireland. Our local area is served by Brian Shackleton who has been advising and fitting the wide range of Hillarys products for over seven years, and he covers a thirtymile-wide radius from his Peterborough base. Brian explains the Hillarys ethos as “local people looking after local people”, in that great emphasis is placed on the personal relationships which an advisor strives to create with customers within their specific area. This can be successfully borne out by a testimonial from a very satisfied customer in Bourne, to whom I was speaking recently.

Mrs June Jones has used Hillarys on three separate occasions in the past and has been delighted with the level of customer care and attention to detail, as well as the high quality of the products installed, most recently a number of Venetian blinds throughout her flat in Bourne. “Brian is a very pleasant man who did everything that was asked of him”, she explained, and she would not hesitate to recommend Hillarys to anyone in the future.

Legal Corner

“No Fault Divorce” Has Arrived

F

WORDS FROM RICHARD WOOD

ollowing the important case of Owens v Owens in 2018, the government agreed to change divorce procedure following heavy campaigning by Resolution (previously The Solicitors Family Law Association). Since 1973, a person wanting to divorce had to have a supporting ground of either (a) adultery (where the person petitioning said that they found the adultery could not be tolerated); (b) unreasonable behaviour; (c) desertion; (d) two-year separation where the parties agreed; or (e) five-year separation where there was no need for consent. Sometimes these issues would cause much disagreement and anxiety. Those in the legal profession knew that, for some time, the procedure had become a means to an end. However, as the client only interacted with the process when they did, this was not how non-lawyers interpreted matters. Society has changed a lot over five decades.

The recent changes mean that it is no longer necessary to give a reason in the way that you did before. Sometimes, clients can even make a joint application, but there is still a petitioner and a respondent. The risk of divorce in the seventies was considerably less than now. These days, the number of relationships which may be lasting until death runs at around 56% which means that those that fail runs at 44%. There is an apparent conflict between the traditional view that Pre-Nuptial Agreements are a risk to a marriage for some people, whereas for others they provide some clarity and protection, should things go wrong. Everyone must decide how they feel about that concept. As divorce can be traumatic and expensive, solicitors believe that, for some people, a Pre-Nuptial Agreement or Deed of Beneficial Interest can help protect interests. Advice should always be sought.

Consumer Advice

Bourne March

Before you go on holiday: • Set up automatic timer switches to turn your lights on when it gets dark. • Don’t discuss holiday plans on social media. • Ask a trusted neighbour to watch over your home whilst you’re away. • Ensure all windows and doors, gates, garages, and sheds are locked. • Keep items that could be used to break into your property such as ladders, tools and wheelie bins stored safely away. • Store valuable documents or items in a safe or leave them with a family member, friend, or a bank. • Make sure valuable items such as laptops, games consoles etc., are not on view from the outside. • Make sure you have up-to-date building and contents insurance. While you're away: • Get a relative, friend or neighbour to park on your drive if you have one, open and close the curtains, collect post from the mat and water the garden. • Be mindful of what you post on social media which could identify you as being away on holiday. Prevention is always better than cure, and now is a great time to install or upgrade any CCTV security/ lighting or alarm systems – or even change the locks. Don’t overlook your garden. Thieves will resort to stealing just about anything, from lawn mowers and expensive tools to fish from the pond... and even newly-laid turf! You could: • Secure all gates and sheds and install some sensory outdoor lighting. • Alarm the garage to provide additional security or think about installing garage roller shutter doors. • Flimsy, broken fence panels could provide easy access to intruders, so consider investing in some new and improved fencing or panels. • Use a security pen to mark items, like garden furniture, ornaments, or trampolines, with your postcode. • Join a local Neighbourhood Watch Group. WITH ENERGY BILLS ROCKETING, HOW CAN YOU KEEP COSTS DOWN? Making your home warmer has never been more important. With Access4Lofts, it’s never been easier or more affordable either! According to the Energy Saving Trust, as much as twenty-five percent of the heat in your home is lost through your loft or roof space. Not only does that mean you’re getting bigger bills than you should be, you’re also contributing much more than you need to towards greenhouse gases and your carbon footprint. While Access4Lofts specialises in supplying and installing loft ladders, hatches and boarding, we also offer loft insulation that could reduce this heat loss by as much as 20%. That’s going to mean not just a significant saving on your energy bills, but also a big step in the right direction when it comes to your household’s impact on climate change. Access4Lofts is fully committed to providing you with loft insulation that is not only practical

and affordable, but also meets the very highest environmental standards. All insulation installs comply with the National Insulation Association (NIA) recommended standard depths of insulation. So, how much does insulating your loft cost? It could be cheaper than you think! You’ll more than make that money back in what you save on your bills. While exact costs obviously vary from house to house, the typical price for insulating your loft in a detached house is around £395, and you can expect annual savings of around £225 on your heating bills. That’s not just for one year either – that’s year on year for the lifetime of the product. Interested in finding out more about how loft insulation could work in your home? Call now for a FREE quotation on 01733 663207.

Household and utilities bills are rocketing, so now is the time to consider insulation as the answer to inflation! Will & Probate Services

Mum and Dad:

The ‘Superglue’ That Holds a Family Together

ADVICE FROM NICK ASH, MANAGING Director Will and Probate Services

Families: who needs them?

W

ell, in truth, we all do but there is nothing like a death in the family to bring out the fractures that exist in almost every family. Just this week I have had three cases that illustrate what can happen when Mum and Dad have finally gone. My first client’s father died recently; her mother had died some years ago. He didn’t leave a will, but he did leave his partner living in the family home. The law says that the daughter, my client, is entitled to the estate, but her father’s partner thinks she (the partner) should get everything and has employed her own solicitor to fight her corner. I do, if I am honest, have some sympathy with the partner, but the law is very clear on what happens when a person dies without a will. Ultimately, this dispute will likely knock tens of thousands of pounds off the value of the estate as it is dragged through the courts by solicitors and barristers. The second client turned up with a letter, purporting to be from her mother saying that when she (Mum) died, her daughter’s son should get the family home. It was just a letter; again, there is no valid will so Mum’s wishes are simply that the letter has no effect in law, so the house, along with the rest of the estate will be split equally between my client and her sister. The problem is that they hate each other, so my client knows that any attempt to honour Mum’s wishes and get the house into the grandson’s hands are doomed.

The third client had also lost their Mum. This time, there was a will, but the three children who were all named as executors have fallen out over money that was taken by the eldest (who was Mum’s carer) before her death. The eldest child claims that the money was given to her as a thank you for caring; the younger two think that she ‘stole’ the money from Mum. The only person who could answer the question is dead, so the family are at war with each other. If Mum had had a Lasting Power of Attorney in place before her death, this wouldn’t have happened. The common theme in all three cases is that there are people who will never trust each other, and probably never speak to each other again. Relationships ruined for the want of the right planning. Three different cases … and it is only Tuesday; it might be a long week! Don’t let this happen to you and yours; get your planning in place as soon as possible. We will be happy to help, and it will cost a lot less than you think. Call us on 01778 252301 and book your free initial consultation.

Two Exciting Brand-New Ventures For The Old Town Hall, Bourne BOURNE COMIC CON

T

he first Bourne Comic Con will be held on Sunday July 3rd at the Old Town Hall. Expect something for everyone: a festival of fandoms, a cornucopia of cosplay and a gallery of games! If you missed out on an advance ticket, we’ll be selling tickets on the door as space allows. The event will be spilling outside too with stalls, selfie opportunities, live entertainment and refreshment stands in the car park behind (where a ticket will not be required).

As cosplayers mix with Warhammer gamers, queue to have your picture taken with Optimus Prime, enjoy a Harry Potter-themed walk around with benches and tables for you to stop and enjoy some refreshments in our very own Hogsmeade. This event has been organized and put together by the volunteer Trustees of Bourne Town Hall Trust with the help of various local companies and organizations. Thank you for supporting us; join us for a fun day out!

BOURNE ARTISTS OPEN HOUSES

F

ollowing a successful art exhibition at the Old Town Hall during our bi-centenary celebrations, we are delighted to be launching our first Bourne Artists Open Houses event in July, across two weekends of the 9th/10th and the 16th/17th. Artists Open Houses connect artists and makers with their local community, for both experienced art-lovers as well as those who might be exploring art for the first time. Selected work from each artist will be displayed in the Main Exhibition in the Old Town Hall over the two weekends, with directions to the artists’ home or studio to view and purchase their work. Please check our website for more information on which artists are participating and where to find them! www.bournetownhall.org.uk/art

JULY 2022

THE DINOSAURS ARE COMING TO PETERBOROUGH CATHEDRAL Yes, it’s true, animatronic dinosaurs from the Natural History Museum in London are coming to Peterborough Cathedral during the school summer holidays!

F

rom July 18th until September 3rd, 2022, the Cathedral is hosting the touring exhibition “T. rex: The Killer Question”. The display includes roaring and moving animatronic dinosaurs - a three-quarter size T. rex amongst them – as well as dinosaur scenes, a twelve-metre-long static T. rex, and a lifesize T. rex skeleton. Imagine seeing these models in the huge space of the Cathedral! The exhibition tackles the monster mystery: Was T. rex a ferocious hunter or a mere scavenger? Visitors are invited to take a closer look at this dinosaur – its size, the power in its legs, the length of its arms, the sharpness of its teeth and its keen sense of smell. Was it best suited to catching and slaughtering live prey or to stealing carcasses? See the exhibition and make up your own mind. Tickets to see “T. rex: The Killer Question” are on sale now. They are £6 for children (age 3 - 16 years), £8 for adults or £25 for a family (2 adults and up to 3 children or 1 adult and up to 4 children). They are on sale via www.peterborough-cathedral. org.uk/t.rex. For updates and offers related to the exhibition, you can join ‘Team T. rex’ free by e-mailing t.rex@peterborough-cathedral.org.uk.
