Benefits of Exercise 4 SEPTEMBER 2022Bourne

After one/two weeks:

The

Your Supportive Team Fitness Manager, Sue Kaye, has been in the fitness business since 1999, previously at her hometown centre in Sleaford until moving to Bourne in 2012. A keen long-distance walker and motorcyclist, Sue is a personal trainer and swimming teacher, who also runs several exercise classes.

For any type of activity to benefit your health, you need to be moving quickly enough to raise your heart rate, breathe faster and feel warmer (“moderate intensity activity”). You should still be able to talk but you won’t be able to sing the words to a song. Working even harder, “vigorous intensity activity” can bring health benefits over and above that of moderate activity. Here, your breathing is harder and faster, with an increased heart rate. At this level, you won’t be able to say more than a few words without pausing for a breath.

● You should experience a better sleep pattern.

● Your body will start adapting, with some loss in weight.

● You will have an increased heart rate, with heavier breathing during the activity.

● You should feel more focused and more energetic.

Matt is also trained to take meditation classes, with a view to the future for there to be a wellbeing centre on site.

After one day:

● There will be changes in your muscle mass, and less muscle soreness after exercising.

The Centre’s Fitness Manager, Sue Kaye, and Fitness Coach, Matt Colborn, stress that Bourne Leisure Centre provides a welcoming environment for all ages, whether that involves individual or family participation. Their friendly, encouraging approach is also directed at those who have perhaps felt in the past that exercising and a gym are not for them. Well, come along … and think again! Even better, join in September and receive 3 months free!*

Bourne-based Matt Colborn started at Bourne Leisure Centre in 2009, and for the last seven years has specialised in “exercise on referral”, for those clients with any health issues, such as diabetes or high blood pressure.

● Your heart rate will have decreased as it gets stronger.

Whatever your age, there is strong scientific evidence that being physically active can help you lead a healthier and happier life. In order to stay healthy, the UK Chief Medical Officer’s Physical Activity Guidelines state that adults should try to be active every day and aim to perform at least 150 minutes of physical activity over a week, through a variety of activities. This is where the well-qualified, enthusiastic team at Bourne’s impressively equipped Leisure Centre are more than willing and able to provide the opportunities for you to reap those so crucial rewards. These can be both physical and especially mental, and come from regular exercise, whether that be in the gym, within an exercise class or within the swimming pool.

Health Walks As part of a general drive to not only get everyone to become more active and healthier, but also to highlight Bourne Leisure Centre as a welcoming community for all ages and abilities, there is a free “health walk” every Friday morning, for an hour from 10.30am, around the local area, with a reviving cuppa afterwards. The walk leaders are all qualified and First Aid trained and look forward to this already popular offering becoming even more wellattended in future. After one month: ● Changes in your body composition, with increased muscle growth. ● Fat levels around vital organs will be reduced. ● Bone density will be increased. ● Your energy levels and ability to focus on things will be enhanced. People who exercise regularly have a lower risk of developing many long-term physicalResearchdeathyourpotentiallysomestroke,typeasconditions,(chronic)suchheartdisease,2diabetes,andcancers,loweringriskofearlybyupto30%!showsthatactivitycan also boost self-esteem, mood, sleep quality and energy, as well as reducing your risk of stress, clinical depression, dementia, and Alzheimer’s disease. Anxiety and stress can manifest itself in many ways: nervousness, panic attacks, insomnia, overly worrying about something that may never happen etc. It can have a crippling effect by bringing on a range of symptoms such as depression, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), skin complaints or negative patterns such as overeating, drinking, smoking etc. If allowed to go unaddressed, stress and anxiety can change lives for the worst.

You will learn how to prevent negative stress, how to identify increased levels of stress, and how to deal with the situation, and how to prevent it reaching debilitating levels in a positive and responsible way. Whatever the cause of stress, anxiety or panic attacks, the treatment is tailored to the individual.

At least one person in ten experiences panic attacks which are often triggered by a stressful or anxious event. A panic attack happens when you experience a sudden onset of intense physical and psychological symptoms. They can occur for no apparent reason or a set of circumstances can bring about an attack. You might experience an overwhelming sense of fear, dread, anxiety, or apprehension. There are often physical symptoms accompanying these feelings, including a change in breathing pattern, sweating, nausea, heart palpitations, rapid heart rate, trembling, or even a difficulty swallowing.

While they are frightening, it is unlikely they will cause physical harm, but the self-perpetuating thought of having one stops us from doing the things we want to do or need to do, causing more stress and increasing the potential of having a panic attack.

nxiety can build up over a long period of time without us even realising it, or it can come on suddenly, as a result of something such as illness or a change of circumstances. Some people who have been fully in control, suddenly find they can’t cope in their daily life.

Hypnotherapy allows guided relaxation, showing a preferred future and, because the subconscious part of the brain (the part that’s in charge of our reactions) doesn’t understand the difference between imagination and reality, the guided relaxation starts to bring calm and control back into our lives.

The good news is that Solution Focused Hypnotherapy has been shown to be a very effective treatment for panic attacks, reducing the frequency in a short period of time, or sustained treatment will often result in them disappearing altogether. Hypnotherapy reduces underlying levels of anxiety, giving you greater control and reducing the emotional arousal. Hypnotherapy works with the subconscious brain templates and makes suggestions in a beneficial and positive way to make positive changes happen in the subconscious.

● With children, parents need to know where their children are to keep them enjoying the holidays, but to be safe. Unhappily sometimes, when parents are separated, it is necessary to make an application to Court for an urgent Court Order for holidays, called a Specific Issue Order. The Court has limited availability for these applications. These cases can merge into more involved cases over the choice of school where there are ongoing issues. It is always good to try to seek amicable agreements to make life more straightforward and avoid unnecessary disagreements, but these cases can be difficult.

Theoretically, the Court system would slow down due to Court holidays in August but that is less the case these days.

Solicitors can also advise on holidays when things go wrong.

Personal Injuries can occur when tired or distracted.

● Summertime can be a good time to move house, and property moves are popular, whilst legal housekeeping can be helpful for things such as wills and Lasting Power of Attorney matters.

● We all need to take extra care when driving or using machinery in the workplace or at home.

● Parties can be fun in summer but always try to be kind to neighbours to avoid disputes. We should all have a good time, but it is advisable to try to invite those living close by, if possible.

Six Successful Years

The Vintage Singers’ took us back to yesteryear with a beautiful soundtrack to the afternoon. Tables exquisitely laid, we were served finger sandwiches, cakes, tea, and treats from Chloe’s Brownies of Bourne. A close ally of Wright Care, Marie Curie were in attendance to take donations, and a performance from the children of Edenham preschool had everyone singing along!

Last month, we were honoured to be invited to Wright Care at Home’s sixth birthday party. Following the pandemic, it was a lovely opportunity for carers, customers, and friends of the business to all come together and celebrate.

Celebrated by Wright Care at Home

12 SEPTEMBER 2022

Samantha presented care workers, Tania and Nicola with awards for their six years of service, right from when the company was founded. The same award was also presented to Sarah Palmer, the company’s Registered Care Manager, who has led them to achieve two outstanding CQC inspections. Many other awards were presented, with a palpable feeling of love and respect in the room, from team members and customers alike.

Wright Care at Home are proud to have served a total of 267 customers over the past six years. Currently, they are a team of thirty-three, providing care to fifty people in Bourne, Stamford and the surrounding villages. Congratulations to everyone on the team, from all of us at Discovering Bourne. Here’s to the next six years!

The highlight of the afternoon was the award ceremony, led by Samantha Davis-Wright, founder and director of Wright Care at Home. Samantha spoke of her passion for person-centred home care in the community, following her eighteen years’ experience as a care worker, and of how important it is to go above and beyond for her dedicated team. Samantha spoke about how Wright Care at Home is not a big company, but all she ever wanted was to provide a wonderful place to work, and professional care to be provided to their customers.

Whatever your situation, September brings a new beginning, similar to January, or a birthday. Looking to make some changes? Who says you must wait until January? Now is a great time! With our busy modern lives, how many of us actually pay attention to our mental health? It is so easy to get bogged down with our daily chores, notifications on our phones, or those rising bills arriving on our doormat. One of my favourite phrases is: ‘You cannot drink from an empty vessel’. If you are feeling depleted, how can you be expected to give?

September means one thing for most of us – back to school! It may be that you are embarking on a new year of learning at school, college, or university.

NewYear?You!

14 SEPTEMBER 2022Bourne60 DISCOVERING Bourne SEPTEMBER 2022

Many people think that therapy and self-help books are reserved for those who are struggling. But what if we were to prevent a looming burnout? As someone who has experienced a major burnout myself – one, unfortunately, where I had to leave my job – I believe that the best course of action is prevention! It could be implementing something as simple as switching off your phone and going for a walk every evening. Or perhaps setting aside some time to light some candles and have a bath. Our phones can be such a cause of anxiety. Why not flip that around, and use it to actually help our mental health? Just type “Mental Health” into the Google Play or Apple store, and hundreds of brilliantly rated self-care apps will pop up. “Headspace” and “Calm” are great for relaxation and guided meditations. Or perhaps a mood tracker may suit you better?

For many of us, it is our children, and perhaps a stark reminder to us of how fast they are growing. Teachers may be experiencing a serious jolt back to reality, after a long, hot, few weeks off. Or, for some of us, it may just mean that the rush hour traffic is back to its worst!

SEPTEMBER 2022 15Bourne Helping you to live well

Form: Technique should never be sacrificed for weight. Typically, you should be looking to lengthen and shorten that muscle as much as possible. So many people do ‘half reps’, on a bicep curl for example, because the weight they use is too heavy.

Rest periods between each set. There is no specific requirement to rest for thirty or sixty seconds as many will have you believe. Instead, you should be feeling fresh and able to put in maximum effort with your next set.

1

● Enter the gym with a plan (a poorly programmed routine executed perfectly will elicit more results than the best workout programme executed poorly!)

Talk Training!

First and foremost, have a plan when you go to the gym. Know what body part you are training, what movements you will do and how many sets/reps you are aiming for. A ‘rep’ is one repetition of an exercise - you may plan to conduct eight to ten reps on a machine, thus completing one ‘set’. Typically, most of you will aim to conduct up to four sets of an exercise.

2Train with intensity. The weight you use needs to be heavy enough that you are training to, or very close to, mechanical failure, meaning that you physically cannot conduct another rep. Every single set should be conducted with this level of intensity, aiming to reach failure within the specified rep 3range.

● Slow down! Don’t train like you’re in a rush. Slow the movement down and maximise that time under tension … feel that muscle burn!

To Re-cap:

● Don’t sacrifice form for weight!

adamnorthovertransformationsAdamNorthover:TheBodyTransformationSpecialist.Youcanalsoemailmedirectlyat:adam_transformations@hotmail.com

● Train with intensity. Aim to fail within a specified rep range (record the weights you use and sets/reps you conduct in a notebook and aim to beat this next time you do the same session).

5The speed of your reps. To create hypertrophy of the muscles (an increase and growth of muscle cells via exercise), you want to maximise the time that the muscle

In recent months, we’ve discussed nutrition, calories, and mindset, so now let’s address training and, in particular, resistance training with the aim of building both muscle and strength.

or some, the long hot days of August will be replaced by preparing their families for a new adventure of school, college, or university, or simply a new year of learning and all the excitement or difficulties that this can bring. As I write this, the lyrics of ABBA “Slipping through my Fingers”, is the soundtrack in my head and I think about how we all, whatever the age of our children, reflect on how well-connected we are with what is going on in their lives and their heads as time marches on.

Significantly for Bourne, this September there will be a consultation which will have a long-term influence on how and where Bourne builds and develops over the coming years. More houses are inevitable and welcomed by some, and this is your chance to have your say about where you think they should be built. Developers are poised, ready to build out from Bourne in almost every direction, and many landowners are keen to sell their land to these developers. What we all need to consider is what is important to us about our surrounding local environment and seek to protect what we value. Traffic is becoming a real issue both around the town and in the centre, as well as through the villages, so for new development we need to consider how to minimise the impact.

SEPTEMBER 2022 19BourneSEPTEMBER 2022Deepings Here at Deep-in Aesthetics, we are constantly updating our portfolio of treatments and our latest offering is vitamin B12 injections. This vitamin performs many functions in the body and is a vital nutrient responsible for keeping the nervous system and blood cells healthy. It also assists in releasing energy from foods such as meats, breakfast cereals and eggs. As we age, it becomes harder for the body to absorb vitamin B12 and deficiencies often occur resulting in certain medical conditions. As the body doesn’t make B12 or store it for a long time, injections may be required to supplement it. Vegans are certainly at risk of a low count as they restrict animal products within their diet. Lifestyle factors such as smoking or heavy drinking can also lead to low levels. Additional symptoms of B12 deficiency can include cognitive changes, disturbed vision, and muscle weakness. The effects of the injection vary from person to person, whilst the many benefits include boosting energy levels, helping you to lose weight, and lowering the risk of heart disease. It is also essential for the health of skin, hair, and nails. What’s more, it also alleviates anxiety, slows down memory loss and aids in sleeping patterns. So, what are you waiting for? Last month started with the Feast of Lammas or Loaf-Mass that is held every year on August 1st. It represents the blessing of the first fruits of harvest, which are our cereal crops of wheat, rye, barley, and corn.

Warm September brings the fruit, Sportsmen then begin to shoot.

May brings flocks of pretty lambs, Skipping by their fleecy dams.

Living in Bourne and driving through our idyllic countryside, it is impossible to miss the movement through the year that Sara Coleridge captures in her poem. Bourne is blessed with a wide range of agriculture and food-related industries that have grown up to service the verdant farmland all around us.

THE MONTHS BY SARA1802COLERIDGE-1852

The focus of the service is a loaf of bread made traditionally from the first cuttings of the new crop. These can be made in highly decorative shapes, with a wheatsheaf being a firm favourite with bakers and congregations alike. Our ancient ancestors were no strangers to the idea of working closely with the seasonal calendar, to ensure they knew when to plough and when to plant, to maximise their harvest. The pagan version of Lammas is Lughnassadh

from the Sun god, Lugh and his connection to the Grain mother, Ceres or Demeter. Lughnassadh is the first harvest of grain; then comes the autumn equinox in September where the celebration is of the second harvest of fruit, and the final pagan feast day is November 1st, when they celebrated the third and final harvest of nuts and berries. There is much symbolism connected with Lughnassadh, for example the idea of John Barleycorn – the field of crops that must be cut and give up their life so that we can feed ourselves through the coming winter, is also often depicted in the Lammas loaf. Whilst Demeter represents the ripe corn, her daughter Persephone, who is bound to live under the earth, takes the ripe seeds to ourKeepcycleandfollowingforregeneratetheyearstarttheoncemore.aneyeoutforGeorgianFestivalinFolkinghamovertheweekendofSeptember17thand18th!

The Christian Church was quick to recognise the importance of the lifecycle of the soil, marking Plough Sunday in January as the first Sunday after Epiphany when the plough could be brought to church and blessed in hopes of good planting and growing seasons.

Barbara explains, "I have completed the 150-mile walking challenge in celebration of Maddy’s life and to mark the five years since she passed. There isn’t a day goes by when we don’t remember her unbelievable courage in the face of everything she had to go through in the ten months following her diagnosis of dilated cardiomyopathy and heart failure. The walk started from our home in Bourne on May 29th, which is the anniversary of the day I took her into hospital when she was so very poorly, and from which point she began her ten-week heart transplant journey. I've completed the walk in ten sections, following the South Kesteven Round Walk, ending back at home on Saturday August 6th, the day before she died."

Over the past five years, Maddy's friends and family have raised a total of £14,211.31 for Cardiomyopathy UK and are active in promoting awareness of organ and blood donation.

Kayleigh Goodman (29) and Blaze Horn (28), both from Bourne, have recently launched Floop, a first of its kind mobile app that tracks the carbon footprint of your meals. Inspired by the threat that climate change poses to South Lincolnshire and the region’s significance for the national food supply, the pair set out to make it easy to understand how the food you eat impacts the environment, and to choose more sustainable ingredients.

Floop is available for free on Apple’s App Store and is due to launch on Android later this year, whilst there are many planned updates on the roadmap to further enhance the user experience with further features. your

Floop allows users to calculate the carbon footprint of their meals and offers climate-friendly recipes to try. By tracking meals with the Floop app, users can reduce their climate impact and it also includes a meal planning feature to organise shopping and fight the environmental impact of food waste.

“Knowing how climate change will literally change the Lincolnshire landscape with rising sea levels, I felt that I had to do something to help fight global warming and protect our local area.”

“The overwhelmingly positive feedback since our April 22nd launch has reinforced how helpful Floop is,” explains co-founder Kayleigh Goodman.

“Inheritance Tax will be abolished soon” No chance!! The government are getting an increasing amount from Inheritance Tax every year. Whilst times are tight, this tax is here to stay.

1

“If I own a property jointly there is no Inheritance Tax” No, your share is still part of your estate, and the surviving joint-owner will be liable for any tax due.

7

“I can give my house away and avoid Inheritance Tax” This is a classic ‘man in the pub’ myth even if you give your house away you will still need to pay IHT if you continue to live in it. There are strategies that work, but this one doesn’t and can make you significantly worse off.

6

If you would like to have a serious conversation with a highly qualified advisor about minimising your exposure to Inheritance Tax, then call and book a consultation today on 01778 252301. Centre Market Deeping | PE6 8EQ 01778 252301

“If I put my home in trust it will avoid Inheritance Tax” In the same way as number 4, in most cases this is a myth; giving a property away (including to a trust) is unlikely to have a positive effect on your tax position.

“My business is exempt from Inheritance Tax” Some are, some aren’t! This is an area where specialist advice is needed, so don’t ever assume that it is.

“Inheritance Tax is going to hurt me and my family” – It can, but with the right planning and for the right people, it is possible to pass up to £1 million without paying any Inheritance Tax (and if you are worth more than that, our specialist IHT advisors can help you pass even more). It is all a question of getting the right advice.

• Prune blackberries when picking is over – cut out all the canes that carried this year’s fruit, leaving new canes unpruned.

• Clear the soil of spent crops; leaving them to rot on the soil may spread diseases. You could then rough dig and cover the ground for the winter or you could sow “green manures”, such as field beans, annual rye grass or phacelia. If you have a light soil, they can be left in over winter but those with clay soils benefit from digging them in when you do your autumn/winter dig.

T o help reduce water evaporating in these hot conditions, firstly remove all weeds, as they will compete for moisture, then add a mulch of at least 3 inches depth and do not water during the heat of the day. The best time to water is early in the morning when water will soak into the ground, and if plant foliage gets wet, it will dry off, helping to avoid diseases.

It’s time to lift onions and potatoes before the arrival of cold damp days. Onions should be kept in the light; you can string them and then hang in a cool frost-free place such as a shed.

September is a good time to plant several crops which are hardy enough to withstand the winter and they will provide a steady supply of fresh leaves through to next spring.

Winter lettuces – “Valdor”, “Arctic King” or “Winter Density” are good varieties to choose.

composter as there is plenty of dead or dying material available. If you have one, add any material that isn’t diseased, turn it, water if it is dry and cover to keep warm. Don’t forget to add “brown” materials such as: autumn leaves, cardboard, egg boxes, eggshells, and sweetcorn husks, to name but a few. The proportion of “greens” to “browns” should be 50/50, with no dairy products, meat, fish, or non-degradable materials.

• Lamb’s lettuce and oriental leaves.

Cut down asparagus to 2.5cms (1in) above the ground.

Turn the compost heap and water if it is dry.

• Ripen pumpkins and squashes by removing leaves to allow sunlight in.

• Onion sets and garlic.

A few jobs that need doing this month include:

• Spring greens – seeds can be sown in modules for planting out in October.

• Earth-up or stake Brussels and remove any yellowing lower leaves or those that have fallen off as these are ideal homes for pests to shelter. Tall growing varieties may need staking against autumn winds.

• Plant new strawberry plants and those propagated from runners.

Potatoes, however, should be stored in hessian or paper sacks in a dark, dry, frost-free place, such as a garage or shed.

O ne of the pieces of feedback I have had from a customer is that they didn’t realise how involved a rewire would be and how much dust would be created, but rewiring your home is not usually something that can be avoided, because it’s something that is only usually suggested when the installation in your home is in need of replacement.

To prepare you … you are likely to have holes that will need plastering. Unless you are having the installation surface mounted in trunking, or the walls of the building are hollow there is going to be damage! We always minimise it as much as we can, because we don’t like leaving holes in walls either. We can arrange for the walls to be plastered for you, if required. But don’t worry! Everything is able to be fixed, and once it is decorated, everything will look lovely and fresh, your electrical installation is going to last you between twenty-five and fifty years, and everything will be safe for you and your family. So how can we make this as painless as possible?

WARN THE NEIGHBOURS - Nobody likes conflict between neighbours, but having noisy renovation work can cause problems, especially if they are shift workers. But most people are happy to live with the noise, as long as they know how long it will last. Alto Electrical have a letter template to send to your neighbours that will warn them that the work is going to be carried out, how long it will last, and it will provide them with our contact details, in case they need to discuss anything, such as where we are parked.

MOVE OUT - I often ask my customers to move out when they are having a rewire; not only are you going to avoid the worst of the dust, but we will be able to get finished much quicker if we’re not having to rewire circuits in stages.

32 SEPTEMBER 2022BourneDISCOVERING Bourne 01778 772595 01780 693595 Domestic ● Commercial ● www.altoelectrical.co.ukHeritage Unit 12, Glen Industrial Estate, Essendine, Rutland PE9 4LE Home

PUT THINGS AWAY - Alto Electrical always cover things up when we are carrying out any dusty electrical work, but there is a lot of dust created in the process. So even with everything covered up, it is impossible to remove all of the dust sheets without disturbing it and getting it in the air and it will resettle on your surfaces. a Rewire?

DON’T GO TOO FAR - When we are working on your home, there may be decisions we need you to make. For example, if we can’t access a certain area we would check about going via another route. Sometimes we need to ask questions, like, if we can’t find your stop cock to bond it, we may ask you if you know where it is. You may know that the kitchen used to be in a different room which we could then look in.

BY SCOTT STEWART, GENERAL MANAGER ESTATE AGENT IN BOURNE 2022

September is the “Buzz Month” for House Moves (and for bees!)

ixed emotions are in the air, as parents and grandparents alike will no doubt be breathing a deep sigh of relief as the children head back to school. “Are we nearly there yet?” may still be causing us to wake with a start in the middle of the night, after those long trips to see friends, places, and family. Teachers will be psyching themselves up to face the return to school, but many of us will also be feeling it’s time to make a move, of a different sort.

Traditionally, many people have come to the market in September, knowing that a move does not just happen overnight, but with high hopes of being installed in their new dining room in time for their first Christmas dinner!

Here at Newton Fallowell, we currently have a high demand for properties and, with the market being so busy, we are currently seeing a longer sales process than usual. We are urging homeowners to contact us to obtain a free, no-obligation valuation and to provide us with their criteria for their onward search. We are currently selling properties very quickly and would ideally like you to be on our pre-registered list to give you the best opportunity to move. We have many years’ experience helping people make their hopes a reality so, if you want to make a move this September, just give us a call and we’ll make it happen. Whether you require financial advice, a valuation for your property or assistance in finding your next home, call your local “busy bees”/ Bourne experts on 01778 422567.

September is the “buzz month” in the housing calendar. Agreed, spring is always busy, but this month sees many families deciding that it’s time to get a bigger house. Grandparents may also be thinking that a smaller house or bungalow may help them fend off childcare duties, whilst a bigger house may enable mum and dad to find a moment’s peace from the little dears!

38 SEPTEMBER 2022Bourne Property News 2 North Street, Bourne, PE10 9EA T: 01778 422567

This is all tongue in cheek, of course, but some reality rings through. A small house that a family has outgrown is, in truth, quite a negative experience for all involved. Being under each other’s feet is a sure-fire way to get snappy and fall out with people, so making a move could be just what you need and walking into your new home and feeling the space to breathe more easily would most likely be the best thing you do this year.

allocate land for a minimum one hundred new homes as required by the current South Kesteven Local Plan (SKLP). This is in addition to sites that already have planning permission, such as Elsea Park and land north of Manning Road.

The Plan is being prepared by a Steering Group on behalf of the Town Council and provides the local community with an important opportunity to help shape the future of our parish. The Plan must focus primarily on the development and use of land and will include policies to be used in the determination of planning applications. One of the key things that the Plan must do is

Have Your Say!

To compare their relative merits, the sites put forward by landowners, and/or developers have been assessed by the Steering Group against a wide range of criteria, including availability, physical constraints, vehicular access, biodiversity, and the objectives of the Plan.

The SKLP covers the period up to 2036. However, South Kesteven District Council has embarked on a review which will require further housing in Bourne during the period to 2041. The amount of additional housing above and beyond the minimum one hundred homes that need to be provided as part of the Plan is currently uncertain. However, it is intended to identify a preferred direction for this growth as part of the Plan.

40 SEPTEMBER 2022Bourne

Bourne Town Council is inviting public comment on the suitability of several sites, put forward by developers and landowners, for inclusion as housing sites in the Bourne Parish Neighbourhood Plan (the Plan), and on options for the future growth of the town. We welcome comments from all those aged sixteen and over, and from residents not only of the town but also the wider parish, including the villages of Cawthorpe, Dyke and Twenty.

For those unable to access the Draft Housing Sites Assessment Background Paper online, paper copies will be available to view at the exhibitions at the following venues and times.

September 22nd Bourne Corn Exchange - 10am - 3pm

September 29th Bourne Corn Exchange - 10am - 3pm

September 17th Elsea Park Centre - 10am to 3pm

We will also be holding several ‘drop-in’ exhibitions, where you can learn more about the options and speak with members of the Steering Group/Town Council. You may wish to visit the exhibition before completing the survey. We would prefer you to complete the online survey. However, if you are unable to access this, you can obtain a paper copy either by attending the exhibition or by contacting the Town Council office on 01778 426123. We hope as many people as possible will be able to take part in the survey and contribute to the future development plans for the parish. All responses should be submitted by Friday 7th October, either by completing the online survey, or by leaving at the Corn Exchange, for the attention of Bourne Town Council.

3) Never share your account’s activation code (that’s the six-digit code you receive via SMS).

Supermarket Scam: Scammers send out fake Tesco, Asda, and Marks & Spencer vouchers on WhatsApp. The messages look like they have been sent by a thoughtful friend and designed to trick you into clicking on the link to claim the voucher. There are two classic signs that this is a scam: the spelling and grammar mistakes and, if you type in the URL mentioned in the offer, you will see that the page does not exist.

As a parent, one of your worst nightmares is receiving a mobile phone message from your child telling you they are in trouble. Hundreds of parents are being caught out by the current WhatsApp scam doing the rounds –the number of these scams has rocketed by more than 2,000% in the last year, according to Lloyds Bank.

Verification Code Scam: If you receive a text message with a six-digit WhatsApp code that you were not expecting, you may be a target of the scam. It’s the kind of code you would need if you were setting up a new account or logging in to your existing account on a new device. If you have not initiated this request, you should see this message as a red flag. It could be a fraudster trying to log in to your account.

How to protect yourself

The “Mum and Dad Scam”: involves con-artists convincing parents their children are in trouble and need a cash transfer. The scammer will typically begin the conversation with “Hello Mum” or “Hello Dad” and say that they are texting from a new mobile number as their phone was lost or damaged and will go on to ask for money to purchase a new phone or claim that they need money urgently to pay a bill. The criminal will supply their bank details for payment, with some coming back on multiple occasions until the victim realises that they’ve been scammed.

RETURNS

The main purpose of SciFest is to promote an interest in science in the local primary schools. Several presenters will be visiting the schools during the week beginning October 17th. Some of them will be old friends and have proved popular with the students, others are new to us. It goes without saying that all this costs money and the SciFest committee are extremely grateful for all the businesses, organisations and individuals who have provided sponsorship for this event. Without them, this event could not take place.

Tickets for both events, priced at £3, plus booking fee, will be available to buy online from September 5th.

The Corn Exchange will also be the venue on Tuesday October 18th at 7pm, when Ally Caldecott will enlighten us about “Exciting Gases”. She is keeping details of her talk under wraps, so we will just have to attend to be enlightened!
