Along with millions of others, I will always remember exactly where I was and what I was doing when hearing of the death of Her Majesty the Queen. A fabulous life well lived, a role model for us all and the “glue which has kept our society together”, no one will ever forget her.
At around the same time, I was also saddened to hear of the passing of two of our town’s much respected residents. Former mayor, town and district councillor and organiser of so much for so many, Judy Smith has passed away. To me, Judy has been such an influential and inspiring lady, and Bourne will be much the poorer with her no longer with us. Greg Cejer, too, will leave a large gap with his passing. Well-regarded as Scout organiser, Wake House trustee, amongst several other roles, Greg died suddenly on a family visit to Poland.
We send our condolences to Judy and Greg’s families. Claire x
No sooner was a new face arriving at Number 10 than the news of Her Majesty the Queen’s passing shocked the world, and “God Save the King” boomed out, for the first time in over seventy years. Meanwhile, anecdotes are shared by the many who have had the good fortune to have had their lives enriched by having met Her Majesty.
As a youngster on a family trip to Sandringham in the early 1960s, my own memory remains of an enthusiastic cockney lady bawling over our shoulders and straight into my ear, “Gord berless your mairgesty!!!” as the royal party strolled past.
And finally, “Something you can trusst” met my eye in an advertisement for a firm of wristwatch manufacturers recently – true story!
Apparently, the inventor of the umbrella wanted it to be called a brella, but he hesitated once too often – maybe not true!
Enjoy the read and don’t forget … clocks go back an hour on October 30th. John

Words from the Mayor
God Save The King!
News that Her Majesty the Queen’s health was deteriorating emerged shortly after midday on Thursday September 8th, when her doctors said she was under medical supervision, prompting her family to rush to Balmoral Castle in Scotland to be by her side.
by Ian Sismey (Town Clerk ) on behalf of the Mayor
Thousands gathered outside Buckingham Palace, in central London, and there was a stunned silence when the flag was lowered to half-mast. The crowd surged to the gates as the notice announcing the death of the only monarch most Britons have ever known was attached to the black iron gates.
The passing of our beloved Queen, Elizabeth II has for many people conjured more emotion than they thought possible. The protocols that were prescribed following her death were met with honour and dignity, no more so than the Proclamation of the Accession which I had the honour of delivering on Sunday September 11th.
At 3pm on that day, many of the people of Bourne came together to receive the proclamation that Prince Charles had been duly announced King Charles III, following the passing of his mother. The ceremony was flawless in its presentation and was watched by a subdued crowd, clearly affected by the news of Her Majesty’s death.
The period up to the ceremony had seen books of condolence opened at both the SK Community Point and at the Abbey Church, both to be closed on the day following the Queen’s state funeral on Monday September 19th.
As I write these words, the funeral of Her Majesty has yet to take place, but I am sure that her last ceremonial journey to her resting place in Windsor will be as poignant as her last seventy years on the throne.

By the time you read this magazine, work will have started on land offered in 2012, by Bourne United Charities, for the longawaited skatepark in town.
Some of you may have had hopes of a skatepark to enjoy in your youth and now with children, (dare I say grandchildren?) of your own, this is really going to happen. Like so many things, this will happen because volunteers over many years have brought together proceeds from fundraising events, grants, pledges, and donations to fund the project. Local organisations have given their support and
‘Dimension Skatepark’ is now underway.
Staying with the theme of youth, I was invited to officially open Lauren’s Dance Centre in Abbey Road, Bourne last Friday and enjoyed watching members of the LDC Crew perform. The Lions Fun Day on the Recreation Ground was another pleasurable opportunity to see volunteers performing on stage, whilst others manned the stalls and games. The young footballers taking part in the tournament were also drawing a crowd along with Claire’s Crew who were demonstrating their moves.
At last, Bourne will have a skatepark before the end of this year!

Method
Ingredients
1 tbsp olive oil
1 onion, roughly chopped
2 large carrots, peeled and roughly chopped
4cm fresh root ginger, finely chopped
1 garlic clove, crushed
½ tsp dried red chilli flakes
700g sweet potatoes, peeled and cubed
2 pints vegetable stock
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
Recipe: bbc.co.uk/food/recipes
1 Heat the oil in a large, lidded saucepan over a medium-high heat. Add the onion and carrots and cook until softened. Stir in the ginger, garlic and chilli flakes and fry for 2 to 3 minutes, or until fragrant.
2 Stir in the sweet potatoes and stock. Turn up the heat and bring the pan to the boil. Reduce the heat to low and simmer with the lid on for 15 minutes, or until the sweet potato is tender.
3 Remove the pan from the heat and blend the soup, using a stick blender, until smooth. Alternatively, tip it into a food processor and blend. Season to taste and serve.
For garnishes, try drizzling a little coconut milk or cream into each bowl, or sprinkle over some freshly chopped coriander, or fry up a pinch of cumin seeds and chilli flakes in a little oil and swirl into the soup.
A big bowl of comfort, that can also be frozen for future meals... winner, winner, soup for dinner!

MOUNT
Amonastery can be a single building or indeed a collection of buildings for monks or nuns that have living quarters, places to work, and a place for prayer, possibly a chapel or a church.
Self-sufficient monasteries can include a school, plus agricultural aspects, manufacturing facilities, amongst other activities. Mount Saint Bernard Abbey is located near Coalville, Leicestershire, and this Roman Catholic Trappist monastery was established during 1835. The Abbey Church is dedicated to the Greater Glory of God and recorded as being in honour of the Blessed Virgin Mary and Saint Bernard.
Mount Saint Bernard Abbey offers many interesting features for visitors, from both the UK and overseas, throughout the year. The Abbey Shop has numerous, most appealing items and products for sale, including a good number of books, with some authored by the monks. Cards, gifts, pictures, pottery, and honey (from their own apiary) are all available.
Award-winning Tynt Meadow English Trappist Ale (7.4% vol) is a very popular production, by Mount Saint Bernard Abbey. During 2017/18, space was created for a new brewery, with the production
of the beer being carried out by the monks. The labelling for the bottled beer bows to, and honours a 12th century Cistercian script, created by Brother Anselm Baker, who was an early monk of the community and an artist of note.
The name ‘Tynt Meadow’ reflects and respects connections with the land and monastic life here for nearly two hundred years. This full-bodied beer is fermented twice and utilises English barley and hops, plus an English strain of yeast, all to great advantage. The deepish brown colour has a reddened hue and entices to the gentle aroma, evoking thoughts of dark fruits. I found the beer to be well-balanced, having overtones of chocolate. The very pleasurable mouthfeel continues to the palate’s delight, for a memorable finish.
For more details, including Tynt Meadow ale stockists, the excellent website has all information.

Bourne Leisure Centre
The Benefits of Exercise
1Itis recommended that adults should get 150 minutes of moderate activity or 75 minutes of vigorous activity each week. Swimming is an excellent way to work your entire body and cardiovascular system, and an hour of swimming burns almost as many calories as running, without all the impact on your bones and joints.
2Swimming
can be a safe exercise option for people with arthritis, injury, disability, asthma, multiple sclerosis, or other issues that make high-impact exercises difficult.
3Swimming
is likely to help you sleep better at night, boost your mood, and help you manage stress.
4Children
need a minimum of 60 minutes of aerobic exercise each day, so what better way than to have fun in the water?
5You
can learn new skills such as lifesaving, as well as getting competitive and joining a swimming club.
Swimming Lessons Meet the Team
Judith Harwood has been teaching for ten years at the Bourne Leisure Centre, various ages, but principally with the younger ones. Widely experienced with children who have special needs, such as autism and cerebral palsy, Judith looks to integrate whenever possible these children into her mainstream lessons, whilst she can also offer private tuition for anyone with special needs.
Adults too can benefit from Judith’s thirty-minute lessons, either at ‘beginner’, ‘intermediate’ or ‘advanced’ level. These classes can be stroke-specific to improve existing skills and negotiable with the swimmer.
Another of Judith’s specialisms are the “Rookies” classes where lifesaving and survival skills are taught. Judy looks excited, out of the water, above.
Sophie Cowley only joined the Centre last year but has already advanced from assistant, through teaching levels one and two, to now being able to impart her knowledge and techniques acquired from her own long and successful association with the Deepings Swimming Club. Sophie can teach across the whole age and ability range, including adults, but tends to specialise in the higher stages of the swim school. This involves stroke discipline, competitive starts and turns, and preparing for competitive events. Sophie looks happy, in the middle, in the pool.
14 Bourne
Shocking... but true!
Only 30% of parents surveyed said they were very confident that their child knows how to stay safe in and around water.
Over 46% of people drowning never intended to be in the water.
Over 80% of those who drown accidentally are male.
Distance Nights
These are offered to all swim school pupils once every quarter, where in supervised conditions pupils are encouraged to swim as far as they can. The aim of the event is to challenge and motivate, to achieve further than previous attempts. Dexter, pictured with his dad, attended our last distance night and achieved a fantastic 600 metres (24 lengths). Both the staff and his family were immensely proud of his achievement!
About two-thirds of UK adults surveyed have never had any formal training or education in water safety.
62.4% of accidental drownings happen in inland water.
Around 44% of accidental drownings happen between May and August.
Safety in the Water
Alongside the teaching element, classes at Bourne Leisure Centre also involve everyone being made aware of the dangers that come from being in or near to water, whether it be a lake, ocean, or a swimming pool. On average, around four hundred people drown in the UK each year, so the main goal of Water Safety Week, held annually in June, (also known as “Drowning Prevention Week”) is to teach the necessary skills and knowledge needed to be safe and have fun in the water.

Bourne Dance Company
TakeS Giant Steps Forward!
BY LUCY BRIGGS
Lauren discovered dancing when she was ten years old. After her first street dance class, she was hooked. Dancing helped Lauren develop her confidence, and she quickly decided that she wanted to pass on this gift to others. By the age of sixteen, she had founded LDC (‘Lauren’s Dance Company’) and began to teach. Eight years later, she is proud to have opened her own studio, enabling her to run more classes, and finally clear her long waiting list!
Lauren worked hard to achieve many qualifications in dance. She trained at college in Melton Mowbray, Pineapple Studios in London, and earned her degree in Urban Practice BA (Hons) from the University of East London. While training hard, LDC was still alive in Bourne, where she would return every weekend to teach. Lauren continues to train with the best, continually learning, ensuring that her knowledge is of the highest standard. With the continued support of her parents, her dancers, and the entire LDC family, Lauren’s dance company now has
a permanent home on Abbey Road in Bourne. Much thought has been given to every detail of the air-conditioned studio, including disco lighting, a ‘TikTok wall’, and purpose-built flooring and mirrors.
LDC specialises in Street Dance, with Jazz, Cheer, and Musical Theatre classes also available for all ages. Five different ‘dance crews’ regularly compete in competitions, with trophies lining the walls of the studio. LDC also offers Adult Dance Fitness and Clubbercise classes. The studio is available for parties on Sundays, which includes a mini disco, games, and learning a routine from Lauren herself. The entire schedule and all services offered are available on the website www.ldcdance.co.uk, Facebook @danceLDC, Instagram @ldc_dance_, and of course, TikTok @ldc_dance).
When speaking about the future of LDC, Lauren was very excited to tell me of her plans. She hopes to begin running movie nights and mini discos very soon, and to bring back the popular toddler classes during the daytime. A greater number of classes is on the horizon, as Lauren continues to pass on her passion for dance, inspiring a new generation to express themselves.
Lauren Willis, founder and owner of ‘LDC Dance’ has this month achieved her dream of opening her own studio. Her motto “Dance to express, not to impress” has inspired confidence in herself and the youth of Bourne.

Albert Hall, Here We Come!
Children from Bourne Westfield Primary Academy and Thurlby Primary Academy, (two schools within Keystone Multi-Academy Trust), are excited to announce that they have been invited to perform by Lincolnshire Music Service at the “Music For Youth School Proms 22” at the Royal Albert Hall in November. Four-hundred children and young people will make up the mass ensemble, who will be singing and playing from memory, with the inspiration drawn from Beyonce’s Coachella Festival performance.
For many years, Lincolnshire Music Service has been proud to host a Music for Youth Regional Festival in Boston. As part of their thirtieth-year celebrations, Boston Music Centre presented a tribute to Beyonce at the MFY National Festival in Birmingham which showcased their bands and choir. Boston Music Centre have invited those schools from across Lincolnshire who have supported MFY to join the ensemble.
Rebecca Beavis, Arts Director for the Trust, commented, “This is an absolutely amazing opportunity for our children. To perform at one of the most prestigious performance venues in the world is so exciting and we are thrilled to be part of it.”
WE HAVE A WINNER!
Congratulations go to Charlotte who won our ‘Summer Hunt’ competition in the August issue of ‘Discovering Bourne’. She has already spent some of her £50 prize on a Tie Dye kit and will probably spend the rest on other craft kits. Many thanks to all the shops and businesses in the town who helped make this annual summer holiday adventure for the town’s little folk so successful.

It has been fantastic to see all our children back in school again and to welcome those new to our community. As the year begins, we have straightaway got into our curriculum with immersive experiences; outdoor education; awarding children with the roles and responsibilities they have applied for; and so much more.
It seems strange that, as soon as we return, we are already thinking about next September and those who will be joining us then! The deadline for school applications for September 2023 is January 15th, 2023, and many parents have begun thinking about this. Following the enormous success of the Lincoln City home fixture on August 31st, which saw 2,328 supporters attend the Weston Homes Stadium, the club want to continue the growth of the women’s fanbase by hoping to attract larger attendances with the move to Bourne Town’s stadium.
The JJ Mac Stadium Abbey Lawn, which has a capacity of 2,000, provides much-needed facilities for the club, and Chris Good,
Chairman of Bourne Town, is keen to help develop the women’s game in the local area, and looks forward to a successful relationship together.
Posh Women General Manager, Bobby Copping added, “I am delighted to have agreed to play all our home games at the Abbey Lawn. It has always been a target of mine to get the team playing at a more stadiumlike venue to further improve the professionalism of the club.”

Grief: How Hypnotherapy Can Help
If you have suffered a loss or are trying to accept significant changes in your life, grief can become overwhelming, causing high states of emotional anxiety and low states of depression. Grief is a cocktail of emotions that needs to be understood and accepted. Feeling angry is a normal, natural reaction to death which can make us feel resentful. Hypnotherapy supports you through this emotional process and helps you, in your own time and in your own way, move towards acceptance.
Learn how to have “good grief” instead of bad
Grieving is a process, not a permanent state, and we need to go through the grief process with less stress and tension. Grief can make us feel isolated, hiding away from the world because we lose our confidence, making our world become smaller and smaller. Hiding away from the world is a normal reaction too; hypnotherapy helps to regain balance and helps you feel emotionally stable again, allowing you to gain the confidence to interact with the world again. We all deal with grief in different ways, and it can often become challenging. Grief is necessary, but we don’t want it to completely take over our lives.
Hypnotherapy for grief
Hypnotherapy is a way of giving yourself the time to find calm and peace for yourself, allowing you to process your grief, but at a pace that is right for you. Hypnosis helps you overcome grief and loss and reach a stage where you can enjoy the memories of your loved one, without being overcome by the pain of missing them. This helps you to clarify
your thoughts and get things done, which will take the pressure off, and stop you worrying about whether you will be able to cope with everything.
Hypnosis can gently help you overcome grief by -
1. Reducing the unbearable intensity of your grief.
2. Helping to organise your grief so that you can grieve at your own pace, but not all the time.
3. Enabling you to regain your confidence.
4. Stopping you from feeling angry.
5. Allowing you to interact with the world in a healthy way.
6. Allowing you to access a feeling of calm and strength.
7. Helping you look after yourself with compassion.
8. Enabling you to find a place for grief in your life which doesn’t overwhelm you.
9. Reconnecting with the positive memories of the person you have lost.
10. Allowing you to enjoy your memories, without them being so charged with painful feelings.
11. Helping you to move on with your life without feeling guilty.
12. Empowering you to be more motivated and move forward.

Fall Into Autumn!
Backto school or university, no more lazy summer evenings in the beer garden, the end of ‘festival season’, and in September I always turn another year older.
Now in my mid-thirties, autumn is by far my favourite season. The chaos of social events comes to an end, and I can ready myself for a winter of nourishment, growth, and reflection. That might sound a little dull and depressing, but I see great joy in this season. Autumn is a welcome break, sandwiched between summer and winter; two seasons, which I realised earlier today, are generally very social, and where we depend heavily on interactions with others.
There are many uncertainties in the world right now. We have a new Prime Minister, a new monarch, and are amidst a cost-of-living crisis, just to name a few. Autumn is full of earthy colours, helping to ground us in ourselves. We may not be able to rely on things that are beyond our control, but we can control what we do with our time. Here are some of the things that I will be doing with my autumn.
I took this photo of my little dog, Alfie last autumn. We went walking in Bourne Woods, as we often do, and the colours were simply stunning. Throw on a snuggly coat and some nice dry shoes, and that’s all you need to enjoy these stunning landscapes. Feel the leaves crackle under your feet and breathe in the crisp air.
Did you know that the Danish have an actual word for that feeling of quiet comfort? That word is ‘hygge’ (pronounced ‘hoo-gah’), and I was a huge practitioner of Hygge before I even knew it was a word! Imagine you are snuggled in a blanket, wearing a favourite cardigan of yours. There are candles lit to your left, a mug of steaming tea on your right, and a book in your lap. And that’s it – you’re doing Hygge! It doesn’t cost a lot to do, and the wholesomeness of it will sooth your soul.
It’s OK to stay at home. It’s OK to enjoy a simple tin of soup for lunch. Relish the earthy tones of this season, find joy in the little things, and be sure to rest and replenish before the Christmas festive madness begins! On a personal note, as a big spooky fan, I will also be binge-watching horror films and enjoying the Halloween vibe!

Glow Inside and Out this Winter!
As we approach those dark, winter months, here at Deep-in Aesthetics we want you to keep that summer glow. We are inviting all clients, old and new, to take advantage of our October promotion and, alongside the anti wrinkle treatments that we currently provide, why not come and try our 70 HYAL skin boosters?
Key benefits include intense hydration, subtle augmentation, and a glowing youthful appearance, whilst also stimulating your own production of collagen and elastin. The results are instant and subtle, so not even your friends and family would know you have had a clinical treatment. One treatment, once a month, for three months will be required and be topped up every six to twelve months, dependent on need.
Alongside the vitamin B12 injections, we are now also offering, as a medical aesthetic clinic, vitamin D injections which would be one single dose lasting you through the winter months. It is fast becoming the nation’s essential vitamin, with recent links to the fight against Covid. It reduces the risk of many other diseases and has an extremely important role in regulating mood and warding off depression and the seasonal SAD disorder which many people find crippling. It is also essential for bone and muscle strength and when deficient, can result in aching joints and bones as well as helping with insomnia and preventing coughs and colds.
So, let’s make this winter a better one and get you booked in now!

What an amazing couple and service they offer. I have never met two people who are so professional and personally relatable at the same time. They both made me feel so at ease and who just genuinely wanted me to reach my goal. They have given me the confidence to actually be able to look in the mirror and be ok with what I look like for the first time in about 7 years. Thank you so much and I will be using their services again."

Effects of Digitalisation and Data Protection
WORDS FROM HASRET OGUR
Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs) documents have never been as important as they are in today’s world. The wave of changes created by Covid-19 has touched legal areas that no one could have anticipated. One of the most significant changes was the shift from personal interaction to digitalisation, which is spreading to every aspect of our day-to-day lives. The more organisations (and even the health care system) are becoming digitalised, the higher the standards they adopt to protect you, as their customers and clients.
Without doubt, this change most drastically affects vulnerable elderly people, as they often find it difficult to deal with enquiries via phone or online. Many seek help from their loved ones to speak on their behalf for simple things like calls to utilities, paying bills, queries to their pension providers, and even requesting medication online.
However, you may recently have encountered organisations rejecting to speak with your family members or friends without you being present on the basis of data protection. The truth is, as we get more digitalised, providers implement more strict measures about who can speak on your behalf.
It is, of course, not practical for your friends and family to be physically present with you whenever they want to help. Therefore, the most effective way to resolve this issue is to appoint them as your attorneys by drawing up an LPA. This is a formal document that will be registered with the court and can then be used by your appointed attorney(s) to help you during your lifetime.
LPAs can only be drawn up by those who have the mental capacity to do so. It is therefore best to put one in place sooner, rather than later.

Phew … That Was Quite a Summer!
by Brynley Heaven
When I moved to Aslackby twentyone years ago, residents reminded me of the time when the postman got snowed in. The A15 was impassable, and he had to spend the night in the village. This last summer we have experienced two periods of quite extreme heat, including a day which breached the previously exotic and unthinkable 40-degree mark. One for the history books. We have had to recalibrate every expectation of what seems possible. The historical records are of course replete with dramatic weather events, fearsome storms, coastal inundations, recurrent inland flooding down the centuries, conflagrations, plagues, and epidemics.
Historian of the town, J. D. Birkbeck (formerly Head of History at Bourne Grammar School, now well into his nineties and residing in his beloved ‘Westmorland’ -Ed.) tells how “fire raged for three days” in Bourne. A Royal Proclamation made by King James I stated “our poor subjects, the inhabitants of our Towne of Bourne .. are at this present time fallen into greate want and poverty, by reason of a greate misfortune of Fyer, which utterly consumed and burnt our said Towne of Bourne with all their goods and substance therein”. Collections were held. The fire was one of many. People have always been fascinated by extreme weather events, Thomas Short was logging them in a compilation in 1749. Even today, obscure television channels love to put on such a compilation, using a ‘Greatest Hits’ approach, sometimes without much context. Until recently, it was comforting to see our current warming as part of a long tradition of changes, ebbs and flows and occasional calamities. Our much-missed Rex Needle, writing on The Great Bourne Flood of 1910, concludes by saying “we must count ourselves lucky not to experience the meteorological extremes of other countries”, a commonplace sentiment in my youth, but not one
which has really survived this past summer!
Purely by chance, I was checking out the large tropical city of Natal in Brazil (which translates as ‘Christmas’ or possibly ‘Nativity’), just four hundred miles south of the equator. Wikipedia records their hottest day as 36.8 degrees. In other words, cooler than Bourne Lincolnshire. The fact checkers may have even better examples.
We take so much for granted. Wisdom about existential threats is so much harder to calibrate than degrees of heat. People in self-protective mode may prefer not to think too hard about the science of methane feedback loops, for example, in order to preserve an even kilter. That is understood, natural even. If there is useful middle ground between doomster alarmism and appalling complacency, it can be hard to find, when practical measures can seem puny set against the scale of likely warming. Will we ever see the villages snowbound and cut-off by drifts once again? Quite possibly. Who can say for sure?
Even in the twenty-first century, flooding is a recurrent problem!

Pre-Paid Probate? Just Say, “No!”
That said, we are not without our issues; the process of probate is slow, cumbersome, and old-fashioned. Many solicitors are still vague when it comes to charging, and clients often simply don’t understand what they are paying for and how much they will end up paying. It is why we always work with fixed fees that are transparent from the outset.
But every now and then, there is an innovation in the industry that raises the concerns of everyone, and in recent weeks, Pre-Paid Probate has become one of these. It is a new(ish!) concept that promises to do your probate for free, as you will have paid ‘up-front’ during your lifetime. Many of the firms who are selling it are trying to compare it to buying a pre-paid funeral plan. In fact, some of the firms are run by people who ran pre-paid funeral plan companies that were forced to close when the Financial Conduct Authority started to regulate the sector. Needless to say, pre-paid probate plans are not regulated. The comparison to pre-paid funeral plans, whilst convenient, is disingenuous and misleading.
With a funeral plan, the services you are buying are obvious and transparent. Funerals are broadly the same service at their core. As such, this is all very predictable and relatively easy to project forward,
as the needs at purchase are unlikely to vary much from the needs at use. You will always need a funeral!
Probate, on the other hand, is not predictable. Your needs at the point of purchase could vary wildly from your needs at the point of use. Care costs, lifetime planning or multiple other life changes could mean that you never need probate. Alternatively, hard work or inheritance could mean that your wealth has increased, and the probate process is more complex than when you bought the plan.
With a funeral plan, what you buy is always going to be what you need. With a pre-paid probate plan, it almost never is. That is why, if someone tries to sell you one, you should just say, “No!”

Bourne-based North Shoes Scoops a Superb Hat-trick of Wins
Thehistoric business, which was founded in the town in 1876, is particularly pleased to have won “Children’s Independent Footwear Retailer of the Year” for the first time. There was notable individual success too, with Clare Mason named “Student Shoe Fitter of the Year” and a memorable year for North Shoes included being declared the top “Fashion Independent Footwear Retailer”.
Managing Director, James North, said: “It’s the first time we’ve won Children’s Independent Footwear Retailer of the Year and I’m absolutely delighted. I’ve been keen to win it since the awards began ten years ago. We’ve been shortlisted once before, which was great, but to actually win it is a superb achievement. It’s a feather in the cap for all the staff.”
North Shoes’ high level of customer service, including shoe fitting and softening, and its wide product
range had been recognised by the panel of judges, according to James, who attended the blacktie awards ceremony with 17-year-old daughter Jasmine who, along with younger brother Freddie, is the sixth generation of the family business.
Clare’s win in the Student Shoe Fitter category follows the 2017 success for Ryan Clements, who now runs the business’s branches of NC Foot Health Clinic in Bourne, Oundle and Sleaford. James said: “I’m very pleased for Clare – it’s a wonderful award for her hard work. She joined the business in 2019 and she’s now a qualified foot health practitioner.”
This year’s three wins come quick on the heels of a record summer ‘back-to-school period’ across North Shoes’ stores in Bourne, Stamford and Oundle, beating its previous record summer sales of 2019, thanks to instore and online sales of 3,700 pairs of school shoes across twenty-six countries.
James said: “Our mantra is simple - we treat people how we would want to be treated ourselves.”

COME AND SING WITH US!
InMarch 2020, Bourne Choral Society was due to perform their Spring Concert in Bourne Abbey. Along with thousands of other events planned for that year, of course, it never happened. In autumn 2021, they had been hoping to resume activities, but again circumstances prevented this happening. As they waited for safer conditions and looked for a new musical director, there was still hope that things might happen in early 2022; but it was not until this summer that they were able to start making plans again, with a new MD.
Monday September 5th will have seen the first rehearsal of the new season in Bourne Abbey, under the baton of Roland Melia. Roland began his musical career in the 1970s as a cellist with the National Youth Orchestra, developing his skills at the Royal Academy of Music and under the world-famous Pierre Fournier.
In 1988, he turned his hand to conducting, and since then has performed internationally in places such as St Petersburg, Portugal, Mexico, Chile and Cyprus. In this country he has worked with (amongst others) the Bournemouth Sinfonietta, Britten Sinfonia and Scottish National Youth Orchestra, as well as
conducting opera and teaching conducting to university standard.
Bourne Choral’s first performance for over two and a half years will be a concert of Christmas music in December, featuring settings of traditional carols and original works by modern composers such as Bob Chilcott and Michael Head. This will be followed by a Spring Concert in 2023.
The choir has usually numbered between thirty and forty, and they now warmly invite new singers in all parts to join them as they come back to life. There is a mix of singing experience in the membership, and no audition is necessary.
Rehearsals are held on Monday evenings in Bourne Abbey from 7pm to 8.30pm and are accompanied by experienced pianist David Scoffield. If you are interested in joining or to find out more, please e-mail john.riley29@btopenworld.com , and Bourne Choral’s chairman will be glad to hear from you.
Council Launches “Inspirational Women of South Kesteven” to Dismantle Female Stereotypes
Ayear-long
programme of events to dismantle female stereotypes and promote the contribution of iconic women from the region is to be launched. South Kesteven District Council's “Inspirational Women of South Kesteven” is the culmination of a project started in 2019 with the creation of a 30-minute film featuring ten key daughters of the district.
The video will launch on November 21st, whilst a blue plaque trail around Grantham which includes five of the women will be reviewed, enhanced and promoted with Stamford District Society, Deepings Heritage Society and others.
Consultations suggested that the council’s events could include a street exhibition about the women, along with a new Women in Leadership Summit, alongside work with school pupils to promote the success of females from the area.
The 10 women so far included are: Margaret Beaufort; Harriet Arbuthnot; Lady Angela Forbes; Mother
Further work will take place in organising events, drawing upon the research available so far, and investigating sponsorship, networking opportunities and a marketplace to promote local businesses.
Magdalen Frances Margaret Taylor; Victoria, Lady Welby Gregory; Edith Smith; Lilian Wyles; Dame Felicity Hill; Judy Campbell; and, of course, Margaret Thatcher.

W hat a summer we had! But now, nights will be longer and days shorter, so best to get time in at the allotment before the clocks go back. Harvest or protect any remaining crops that are susceptible to frosts and clear away any remaining debris, and place on the compost heap: the larger the quantity, the better as this helps the heap to warm up and accelerates the rotting process. It is advisable to shred or pulverise thick, woody stems such as sweetcorn, beans, and brassicas, so that they decompose more quickly. Do not put any diseased foliage on the compost heap; burn or discard it.
If you have an allotment or space in your vegetable patch, have you thought about planting a native hedge for wildlife? If you choose something like blackthorn (for sloe berries), elderberry, or crab apples, you will also have a niche crop... mmm, sloe gin! There is a variety of companies on the Internet that sell mixed edible hedging packs. Crops that can be sown this month include:
• Early broad beans.
• Japanese over-wintering onion sets.
• Last chance to transplant spring cabbages – be sure to net them to prevent pigeons eating the young leaves.
• Plant garlic.
• Plant bare-rooted fruit trees or move existing ones – the soil still has some warmth.
• Sow a pot of basil seeds and put in a propagator or on a warm windowsill, keeping the soil moist. Parsley and mint can be dug up from an established clump, put in a pot and kept on the windowsill – much cheaper than buying pots from the supermarket!
Other jobs for this month include:
• Continue to earth up celery and leeks.
• Protect cauliflowers by bending a leaf over the curd.
• Finish pruning blackberries and raspberries.
• Keep removing yellow leaves from brassicas – leaving them on the ground risks spreading grey mould.
• If you have not already done so earth up, or stake (or both) Brussels sprouts and sprouting broccoli plants.
• Pick the unripe tomatoes and put a few in a bag with a ripe banana –this gives off ethylene gas which speeds ripening.
• Cure pumpkins and squashes – cut and leave them to dry out in the sun, it hardens the skins, and they will keep for longer.
• Cut back asparagus and artichoke foliage and compost.
• Remove runner bean canes: if left in the ground they will easily rot.

Deeping Gas and Electrical Services Your Plumbing and Heating Specialists
Following his family’s tradition of providing plumbing and heating services to the public, Stuart Brearley established his business, Deeping Gas and Electrical Services in 2007. His grandfather was Jack Rudkin whose business was centred on Stamford, whilst Stuart operates out of Market Deeping and covers the Deepings, Bourne, and the villages in between.
Stuart’s early career saw him working in power generation in various parts of Europe before moving on to contracting work for British Gas. Besides his plumbing and heating credentials, Stuart is also a fully qualified electrician. Making the decision to go on his own in 2007 proved very successful as he was soon to be involved with the Worcester Bosch company, who in 2012 selected him as their “Face of Worcester Bosch” in a national competition.
Deeping Gas and Electrical Services advise, install
and service boilers, dealing exclusively with the prestigious Worcester Bosch firm, because, as Stuart himself explains, … “its unique customer focus mirrors the customer service we strive for on every Deeping Gas installation.
Most importantly, when you purchase a Worcester boiler, you don’t just get an excellent product, you get the whole package, which includes the latest training facilities and a technical services back-up that is second to none.”

Electrical Regulations Update
BS7671 18th Edition - Amendment 2 removes the use of type AC RCDs. It has been determined that type AC RCDs can be blinded by the use of DC current using additions to the circuit. This is somewhat frustrating to those in the industry that have supported the implementation of RCDs, as they are such amazing pieces of technology that save lives on a regular basis.
What is an RCD?
(Residual current detector)
An RCD is a device in your circuit that has the job of cutting off the electrical supply if there is a fault. It is a very sensitive and important part of your system and is installed to save lives.
How do I tell what kind of RCD I have?
On the front of your RCD, or RCBO (this has RCD functionality), there will be a small icon to indicate what type of RCD you have. Please see the attached table to see what type you have.
What do I need to do?
After discussing this with the NICEIC, they have stated that you do not need to change the RCD type if you don’t want to, unless you have any work carried out on a circuit covered by that device. Then the circuit the electrician works on will need to be brought up to the current regulations. If you have an electrical safety report, the presence of a type AC RCD should be code
3 (improvement recommended), unless other work is required that changes the circuit, in which case measures will need to be taken to bring the installation up to date.
What uses DC current in your home?
Chargers - whenever there is a battery, DC is involved as AC current cannot be stored.
Computers ~ Televisions ~ LED illumination. Fluorescent lighting (with an electronic ballast). Solar panels ~ Induction hobs
Anything under 50v, such as a 12v transformer. Fridge and Freezer ~ Air conditioning units.

Property Market Report
BY SCOTT STEWART, SALES MANAGER
After a quieter, more traditional summer where people have finally got away on that summer break after a long couple of years in lockdown, we are still seeing a very strong market. Although we have seen a downturn in houses coming to the market in recent weeks, there is still a huge demand for properties and the prices remain high due to the fact there is just simply not enough, which I think is what will ultimately keep prices high for the remainder of the year.
We are looking forward to a busy autumn where we anticipate more houses coming to the market and a busy rush in the build-up to Christmas.
We are still seeing prices and activity at a much higher level than they were before the pandemic. Anyone who is currently thinking of moving I think really needs to ‘strike whilst the iron is hot’ and get in contact with us so we can see if we can help, as we don’t know how long this market will last.
I have spoken with a lot of clients in the last few months who are now staying put due to interest rates and the cost-of-living increase. No one knows for sure what the future holds for the property market, but for now many properties are still selling at record prices. It would be a good idea to give us a call to get an idea of what your property is currently worth, if you are considering moving in the next eighteen months, then you can make your own mind up on what the market might be doing next year.

How to ‘Winter-proof’ Your Home and Save Money
By Eileen Le Voi at Safe Local Trades
With the rising cost of living and soaring energy bills, there are some easy steps to ‘winter-proof’ your home before the cold weather sets in. There are many clever tips to help save money, whether you are able to carry them out yourself or (in the interest of confidence and safety) need a tried and trusted tradesman.
To make sure that October offers more treats than tricks, and to avoid a November nightmare, remember to:
Check all external pipes: Blocked or leaking pipes can freeze, then expand and burst, causing potentially expensive water damage.
Insulation: A fully draught-proof and insulated home can create huge savings. Check the basics, starting with obvious draught points. Invest in some draught excluders and check the cladding around your boiler and pipes.
Bleed your radiators: This releases any trapped air, allowing hot water to fill every part of your radiator and warm the property more efficiently.
Get a boiler service: Arrange for a professional to service your boiler each year. Boilers account for around 55% of what is spent on energy bills in a year.
Clear out your gutters: Leaves can collect in gutters and drains, leading to blocks and overflows. Consider investing in gutter leaf guards.
Turn off electrical items: Even if they’re on standby or plugged into a socket, they could still be using some energy.
Don’t charge your phone overnight: Most phones only take a few hours to fully charge, so yours could be left plugged in for hours unnecessarily, wasting electricity and money.
Don’t wash in half measures: Wash only full loads in washing machines and dishwashers.
Keep your fridge around three-quarters full: If full, it uses more electricity to maintain the temperature and circulate the cold air.
Take it slow: Even though slow cookers are on for a long time, they are more energy-efficient than a standard oven.
Turn it down: Turning down your room thermostat by just one degree can save around £80 a year. For all your home improvement needs, which in turn could help to save energy and keep utility costs down, visit www.safelocaltrades.com

Tax Traps
You wouldn’t usually expect a Family Law specialist to be writing about tax liability, but in dealing with financial settlements arising out of a divorce, and indeed a cohabitation split, you cannot advise clients properly without flagging up potential tax liabilities.
One of the major considerations is Capital Gains Tax in property transfers. Many people assume that transferring the former family home from one spouse to the other, often the wife staying in the home with younger children, could not give rise to a CGT. This is not correct. If the transfer does not take place within the tax year of separation, that is before April 6th of the year following separation, there could be a charge for CGT as at market value, even for an outright gift. CGT on a marital home on divorce should therefore be considered carefully.
The same goes for transfers or sales of investment properties owned by spouses which are disposed of as part of a financial settlement. You must factor in the CGT liability in assessing the equity of such properties or you could be seriously short-changed. Family Law solicitors are not authorised to give substantive tax advice, but we can flag up the pitfalls and point you in the right direction for qualified accountancy advice.
It is mooted in the next Finance Act that the period for divorce transfers will be increased to three years from separation, but this of course may not come into law.
Always consult the professionals when you have property transactions within a relationship split.

Rotarian Joe Piercy is Lunch Champion”
Enjoying their meal at The Black Horse, Baston, are Tim Cook and his wife Carol (left), with ‘Liberty Lunch Champion’, Joe Piercy, and his wife Barbara.
The Black Horse at Baston was chosen by this month’s nominated local resident as the venue for their well-deserved award. The scheme involves The Liberty Partnership in Market Deeping offering a meal to the value of £100 to anyone who has been nominated for having made a significant contribution to their local community.
Mary Martin from the Rotary Club of the Deepings explained to us that former headteacher, Joe Piercy had “for many years run, almost single-handedly, the Rotary Fun Run in the Deepings”. What more deserving a recipient, therefore, than one for whom most of his adult life has involved “running” events to raise money for charities in one way or another … “running that extra mile to help his community”?
In 1995, Joe retired from his headship at The Queen’s School, Wisbech, having taught in Horncastle (where he organised his first sponsored event in 1967), Beverley in East Yorkshire, and at Jack Hunt School in Peterborough. The same year, by joining the Rotary Club of the Deepings, Joe became more and more involved in all manner of community activities.
Besides organising ‘Fun Runs’ and sponsored runs, Joe has been an ‘invisible driver’ transporting Santa Claus around the streets on his sleigh; and he has played significant roles in many “Youth Speaks” events at the Deepings School as well as the Christmas Concerts with the Grimethorpe Colliery Brass Band.
He has also been Secretary at Peterborough Town Sports Club and Seniors Captain at Burghley Park Golf Club, just in case there happened to be a spare hour or two in his hectic schedule over the last twenty-odd years!
The delicious meal which Joe and his wife Barbara enjoyed at Baston on September 1st was in the company of good friends, Tim and Carol Cook. Tim is one of England Athletics’ national officers and has been Joe’s guide and mentor for many years, assisting with Joe’s organising of the running events.
Richard, David and all the team at Liberty Partnership concur wholeheartedly with Mary’s nomination and know that the community is a better place for having had Joe’s involvement for so many years.

Hereward Probus
Pre-Covid, Hereward Probus would meet at the Toft House Hotel. Unfortunately, the hotel closed for meals and so, to keep our membership, (where we were averaging thirty-seven members at our monthly lunches) together, we needed an alternative venue. A big factor for us during the eighteen months of restrictions, was the discovery of “Zoom” and, given the average age of our members is seventy-years-plus, it was most encouraging to see over half of the membership keen to adopt this “new” technology!
The reality of Zoom for Probus members was to enable members to take part in meetings and, if in doubt, to contact a member of the committee for help in joining the “world of virtual reality”. This gave members a sense of togetherness and of being less isolated, in witnessing, for example, our new president taking office at our AGM.
In September 2021, by successfully transferring the monthly lunch meetings to the Corn Exchange in Bourne, we held our first “actual” meeting with thirty members in attendance.
This has proved an extremely popular venue, being very conveniently located, with reserved car parking and excellent catering. Wives, partners, and widows of former members are invited to our monthly coffee mornings, which have also proved extremely popular with increased numbers post-Covid. Late November saw our first outing, to the Christmas Show at Thursford in Norfolk. We held our Spring Lunch in April this year and are preparing for our President’s Lunch in November.
Sadly, we did lose members during this time, some of whom had been Probus members for a very long time. However, following our last article in ‘Discovering Bourne’, we also gained some very welcome new members too, and our attendance is around thirty at present.
If you have just retired, or just moved into the area, we would be pleased to see you at our meetings. Our lunch is held on the second Monday of each month, with our coffee morning on the second Tuesday. If you are interested in learning more and for further details, please contact our secretary, Rob Denton on e-mail; herewardprobus78@ gmail.com or on 01778 702555.
Along with many local clubs running in Bourne, we experienced difficulties during the pandemic lockdowns. So, now we have returned to a more regular lifestyle, what effects did those lockdowns have on local clubs like ours and how are we faring now?

SPOTLIGHT ON CLUBS
Footlights Amateur Dramatic Society is back to present a new play just in time for Christmas!
Aftermore than thirty years of presenting dramas, comedies and entertainment for the people of Bourne and surrounding areas, we are delighted to announce that, after the necessary pandemic break, we are now up and running and ready to entertain you all once again! We are delighted to be presenting ‘The Christmas Spirit’ by Frederick Stroppel at the Corn Exchange Bourne, on Weds, Thurs and Fri, 2nd, 3rd and 4th of November 2022. This dark comedy has romance, tension and festivity and is definitely a ‘must see!!
‘Julia Dowling has an unexpected visitor who intends to escort her off to the afterlife. She persuades him to give her one more day to enjoy Christmas and invites him to be a guest at a festive party. The next day the house fills with bickering relatives; ( we’ve all had a few of those Christmases!), friends, the local priest... and Death, masquerading as a Human’.
This is just a taster of the play that has something for everyone. We have been fortunate to welcome some new members to Footlights in addition to familiar faces that you will recognise.
We always welcome new members to join us at Footlights, so if you fancy treading the boards or helping backstage, please look out for any future readings on Facebook or search ‘bfootlights2022@ gmail.com. We look forward to hearing from you. Come and enjoy the friendly company; all you need to bring is enthusiasm and the desire to entertain and just... have fun!
The venue, Bourne Corn Exchange, has had an extensive renovation during the pandemic and is now a very smart location to stage our play. There is a bar operated by the Corn Exchange which will ensure our audience do not go thirsty.
We look forward to welcoming everyone.

For inclusion as housing sites in the Bourne Parish Neighbourhood Plan (‘the Plan’), and on options for the future growth of the town. Anyone aged sixteen or over, and resident not only of the town, but also the wider parish, including the villages of Cawthorpe, Dyke and Twenty, is welcome to respond.
The Plan is being prepared by a Steering Group on behalf of the Town Council and provides the local community with an important opportunity to help shape the future of the parish. The Plan must focus primarily on the development and use of land and will include policies to be used in the determination of planning applications.
One of the key things that the Plan must do is allocate land for a minimum of one hundred new homes as required by the current South Kesteven Local Plan (SKLP). This is in addition to sites that already have planning permission, such as Elsea Park and land north of Manning Road.
The SKLP covers the period up to 2036; however, South Kesteven District Council has embarked on a review which will require further housing in Bourne during the period to 2041. The amount of additional housing above and beyond the minimum one hundred homes that need to be provided as part of the Plan is currently uncertain. However, it is intended to identify a preferred direction for this growth as part of the Plan.
To compare their relative merits, the sites put forward by landowners, and/or developers have been assessed by the Steering Group against a wide range of criteria, including availability,

Details of the consultation events are
Thursday September 22nd Bourne Corn Exchange @ 10am - 3pm

Thursday September 29th Bourne Corn Exchange @ 10am - 3pm
Saturday October 1st Elsea Park Centre @ 10am – 3pm
Bourne Town Council and the Steering Group hope that as many people as possible will take part in the survey and contribute to the future development plans for the parish.
All responses should be submitted by Friday October 7th, either by completing the online survey, or by leaving a copy at the Corn Exchange, for the attention of Bourne Town Council. www.bourneparishneigh bourhoodplan.org.uk
The assessments will be available in a Draft Housing Sites Assessment Background Paper. This, together with a short questionnaire, will be available on the Bourne Parish Neighbourhood Plan website (http://www. bourneparishneighbourhoodplan.org.uk).
The Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group are holding several ‘consultation events’, to enable people in the parish to learn more about the options, and to speak with members of the Steering Group/Town Council.
It is hoped that people will respond by completing the online survey. However, if they are unable to access this, and the Site Assessment details, they can obtain a paper copy of both, either by attending a consultation event, or by contacting Bourne Town Council, in the Bourne Corn Exchange, or on 01778 426123.

COMMENTARY
1962 was the Italian GP at Monza, and the World Championship was now a straight fight between Graham Hill and Jim Clark. Clark was in pole position on the grid, followed by Hill and his team mate Richie Ginther.
Hill soon took the lead over his archrival as he struggled with transmission trouble, retiring on lap 13. John Surtees and Richie Ginther were behind, duelling for second place, with Ginther eventually coming through on lap 38.
It was a magnificent achievement for BRM all round; the third Grand Prix victory of the season, and first and second on the podium; and all to play for in the rremaining two races of the 1962 Grand Prix season. October 1962 would see the team head across the Atlantic to the US Grand Prix at Watkins Glen.
