Welcome to your December issue...

December is a time for both reflection on what’s gone and anticipation for what’s round the corner of the new year. We can think about what we’ve achieved; those places we’ve visited and new people who may have come into our lives; others who we’ll see no more, but whose memory will remain strong. I prefer to look forward, though, and my new year resolutions are already in the planning stage!

In the meantime, my sincere thanks go out to everyone who has helped us in any way this year, especially the “Discovering” team, for their unstinting efforts to meet deadlines when the pressure mounts, and of course our advertisers and contributors, with their regular features, wonderful advice, and suggestions.

All the very best to you all for Christmas and for 2023 –good luck, but most importantly, good health!

As 2022 dives headlong into the history books as one of the most remarkable years on so many fronts, (think new monarch, three Prime Ministers, highest UK temperature on record, Ukraine, Lionesses, and now Qatar?) we can catch our breath and hope for a peaceful festive period for everyone.

England’s rugby union captain, Owen Farrell, recently confided, “I want to be me, and I want to work on how I be a better me.” Where do think he should start? The event was hosted by Bourne Abbey Primary School and Bourne Round Table, and sponsored by Warners, Johnsons, Georges, UPP, JJ MAC, British Sugar and Bakkavor.

November also brought a respectful pause to remember the fallen. First, the brief Armistice Day Service on Friday November 11th in the Memorial Gardens on South Street commemorated the signing of the armistice that ended the fighting of World War I. Then, on Sunday November 13th, there was a parade through the town and a collective act of remembrance to mark the town’s gratitude to those who made sacrifices for us throughout many conflicts.

In November, Citizen’s Advice South Lincs [CASL] held a re-launch event for the successful return of the Citizens Advice to Wake House, Bourne. This was made possible by local funding sources after faceto-face sessions returned post-Covid, in Grantham, Stamford and Spalding, but not here in Bourne.

This service has already helped over two hundred people from Bourne deal with over a thousand

issues within the first ten months of 2022 and the Bourne service opened its doors once again for face-to-face contact in May this year. Citizens Advice can be found in Wake House Bourne, on Mondays and Thursdays from 9.30am to 11.30am for initial contact.

The next big event of Bourne will be on Saturday December 3rd when North Street will be closed for the Christmas Fayre and Lights switch-on.

November 5th saw Bourne celebrating Bonfire Night with crowds of people enjoying two spectacular firework displays and a roaring bonfire, plus music, rides and refreshments on the Manning Road playing field.

For many years, a Christmas tree has been installed in Crown Walk, Bourne, outside Stephanies flower shop. The public have been able to purchase a colourful bow and tie it to a branch of the “memory tree”, and spend a little time in contemplation, remembering a loved one who is no longer with them.

The staff at Stephanies, along with his many friends and family members, were saddened in March this year when a long-standing colleague, Derrick Atter, passed away at the age of 78, having suffered from pancreatic cancer. Forever known as just “Geg”, he is sorely missed, and as a mark of respect it has been decided that all the contributions for the bows should go to the St Barnabas Hospice in Grantham.

It was here that Geg spent his final weeks, and where he and his widow, Ruth, received such loving care from the wonderful staff.

Who are we?

We are Bourne & Morton Cycling Club! If you live in Bourne and the surrounding areas, you may have seen us in our distinctive orange and black kit. We pride ourselves on being a Bourne-based, friendly, all-inclusive cycling club focusing on the social aspect of riding. We have approximately thirty-five members of all ages and genders. Our club has a real 'team spirit’, always being supportive and en couraging towards each other - a sense of humour is also required when being a member of our club!

When and where do we ride?

Most weekends and all year round. We have developed a good nose for hunting out the best coffee shops within a fifty-mile radius of Bourne. Our members take it in turns, creating routes and leading our rides.

BMCC Socials

We hold events away from cycling too, often involv ing drink and a delicious meal - this is as important to us as the cycling, a little escapism from the pres sures of daily life. We are a great support network for each other.

BMCC Annual Charity Rides

These are for members who feel they can ride 250+ miles over a long weekend. The events are a great motivator to get fit and keep riding with a goal.

As a club, we would like to take this opportunity to thank one of our members, Danny Fowler, who organises the charity ride for us every year. This September, we cycled 250+ miles in three days from Bourne, around the Lincolnshire Wolds, up to

Grimsby, and back to Bourne again, raising £5,430 for The Butterfield Centre. Over the years, the club has raised over £45,000 for charities which wouldn't be possible without Danny's input. Impressive Poetry as Morton School Pupils Remember the Fallen

Remembrance Day is a significant date in the calendar at Morton Primary School. Our Year Six children were proud to represent the school and the wider community at our Remembrance Day Service.

Through their History curriculum work, they learnt about the significance of World War One and the commitment of Armed Forces from across the world in conflict resulting in the sacrifice of so many lives.

The children wrote haikus as part of their preparation to lead our school collective worship at St John the Baptist Church on November 11th.

These thoughtful poems demonstrate the imaginative and mature responses from the children. As part of our service, all the children across the school made their own poppy and laid it under the war memorial in church.

Christmas is a meant to be a time of togetherness with family, fun, joy, and selfless thought towards others. However, Christmas can often just seem like another one of life’s major stresses.

What makes Christmas stressful?

First, there’s the preparation, the shopping in frenzied, crowded stores, people pushing and shoving and you worrying whether so-and-so will like the present you’ve bought them. Then there’s the cooking and organizing and, of course, the financial strain that the extra cost of Christmas entails. Many of us get seriously in debt (or more in debt) after the Christmas holiday. But the biggest stress of Christmas comes from the very essence of what Christmas is supposed to be all about … other people and togetherness!

Pressure can come from other angles too such as trying to stick to that healthy eating regime, social anxiety, keeping phobias at bay at Christmas, (you would be surprised to discover there are many different phobias which can be problematic at Christmas time) and also keeping depression or even anger at bay at this time of year too. Alcohol isn’t helpful either, destroying the happy chemical in our brain, thus leaving us more susceptible to stress, anxiety, anger, and depression.

Bourne Leisure Centre

Refurbishment and a Wider Provision for Everyone

The operators of Bourne Leisure Centre, for example, have recently been able, not only to re-introduce certain classes which had been unavailable during and after the pandemic, but also to invest heavily in a whole host of brand-new pieces of exercise apparatus.

There will be a more diverse offering, which includes “vertical rowers” and “step mills”, whilst all the existing, single-function, resistance kit is to be replaced by the multi-functional versions, for a larger number of gym users to be accommodated at the same time.

A complete refurbishment of the gym area is scheduled to be completed by November 28th, and the new fitness studio will become the hub for all the existing group classes, along

with several new ones. The small room which, whilst cosy, has until now been used for the classes gives way to a studio which will have the capacity for up to eighteen adults, depending on the specific activity.

The group exercise programme is to be expanded by almost 50%, meaning that there is likely to be ‘something for everyone’, a strongly held objective of the team at Bourne Leisure Centre. The social element of exercising in a class alongside others is so important in boosting motivation levels and is very much part of the philosophy of the Centre.

Yes, it will still be somewhere to go for your full body workout on a variety of cardio and resistance machines; yes, it will still be the perfect location for either individual or family swimming activity and a wealth of classes to go with it; but it

is now hoped that everyone will be able to see the potential benefits (provided to adults and youngsters alike) of being able to meet others in a safe, welcoming environment like this. To this end, there are plans to expand the offer even further in the new year, with seminars and group sessions on such important issues as nutrition and mindfulness.

The new fitness studio will give the enthusiastic and well qualified team much more flexibility, and enable them to re-introduce classes such as “cardiac rehab” and a “COPD class”. Furthermore, “disability circuits” are to be offered, which reinforces the existing links that there are with local, adult-supported, learning groups.

The refurbishment of the gym and the ways in which it has been carried out has been in response to a large survey, instigated by Leisure SK. This has been augmented by the management having listened to, and acted on, opinions and suggestions provided, not only from the public but also from their established members, their regular users of the facilities.

The decisions to create the long-overdue fitness studio alongside the provision of new highquality exercise machines will make Bourne Leisure Centre a most attractive prospect for everyone in the area. That could be the

established gym users and returners; it could be anyone, young or old, feeling in need of some friendly company, as they embark on a new exercise class; or indeed it could be those of us making our new year resolutions to get into shape and maybe shake off some of the annual Christmas excesses!

BRM 60TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS

2022 has been a wonderful celebration of all things BRM, and the contribution of the town of Bourne to these achievements.

Immediately after World War II, Raymond Mays, with the support of Peter Berthon, Alfred Owen and Oliver Lucas, set out a vision to design and build a British Formula One racing car that would take on the might of the continental racing teams. This vision was achieved in 1962 with Graham Hill's victory in the World Drivers’ Championship and BRM winning the Constructors' Championship.

This year's celebrations have reminded all how much was achieved by this small town; 17 Grand Prix victories and 61 podiums over a 16 year period, and runners-up in the Constructors' Championship in 1963, 1964, 1965 and 1971 - and a legacy that has thrived in the town ever since.

BRM is hugely appreciative of the continued contribution of the town of Bourne; The BRM Association, Bourne Motor Club and Hall & Hall. Being part of the Platinum Jubilee with an exhibition and BRM car display was

ecember 29th is the sixtieth anniversary of Graham Hill's victory in the South African Grand Prix at East London, which gave Graham Hill and BRM both the 1962 Formula One Drivers' Championship, and the 1962 Constructors' Championship. The race had started well for Jim Clark and Lotus, and by lap 60 of the 82 lap race, Clark had a 28 second lead over Hill; and it looked like the Championships were going to Clark and Lotus.

Lap 63 however saw a sudden change of fortune, with a trail of oil smoke from Clark's Lotus. Clark pulled into the pits to discover that an oil plug had dropped out, and that was the end of his and Lotus's aspirations for the 1962 season.

Hill crossed the finish line 50 seconds ahead of Bruce McLaren, ensuring both Championship trophies for Britain. Teammate, Richie Ginther came in 7th, Bruce Johnstone 9th, providing that additional contribution to the team's success.

Fire Rating in Downlights

Vital Safety Advice from Alto Electrical

When downlights are installed in your ceiling, a circular hole is cut to be able to sink them flush to the ceiling; this hole compromises the fire rating of the ceiling. Modern fire rated fittings have backs on them to re-establish the fire rating of the ceiling and help stop the spread of fire to the next floor.

Older designs do not have a back to them, so there is nothing to help contain the fire, but it also means that the open back provides no protection to anything that happens to be nearby, such as insulation or wooden joists.

Older fittings may still have halogen lamps in them, which are notorious for getting hot. I have personally removed halogen downlights that have not only caused serious scorching to the wooden joists next to them, but also melted the cable feeding them!

An easy way to tell whether or not your downlights are fire rated is to look at the lamps. If the lamp inside has pins, this is an MR16 lamp. This fitting is very unlikely to be fire rated. If it has “nobbles”, this is a GU10 lamp. This could go either way and you would need to look behind the lap to see if you could see a metal “can”.

There are two ways of fire rating downlights; one is to put fire hoods above the fittings, and the other

is to replace the fittings for fire rated ones. The difference in cost between the two options isn’t actually that much, so it is often more economical to get shiny new fittings. If you wanted to treat yourself, you can get all-in-one fittings, which have additional functions to be able to change their appearance and the type of light they provide.

Stay Merry, Not Miserable in the Run-up to Christmas

‘Tis the season to be jolly – but as we prepare for the season of goodwill, not everyone shares the Christmas spirit. Whether the threat comes from sophisticated seasonal online scammers or opportunist thieves making the most of a security oversight in the home, there are sadly plenty of people intent on making it a miserable, not merry, Christmas for many. Protect yourself from falling victim to online shopping or auction fraud:

• If you’re making a purchase from a website or person you don’t know and trust, carry out some research first. Read reviews or check the seller’s feedback before going ahead.

• Use a payment method that offers buyer protection, such as a credit card, as most major credit card providers will help you get your money back if the item is faulty or damaged, or if it never arrives.

• Make sure you have a strong password for your email. You should also enable two-factor authentication (2FA), where possible, which gives your online account additional protection by double checking that you really are the person you claim to be, when logging in.

At home, seasonal security is essential, even if you are continuing to work from home.

• For opportunist thieves, visible presents under the tree, open car boots full of shopping, while loads are being taken into the house, and even the possibility of an unlocked garage or parcels left behind bins, are rich pickings.

• Equally, flaws in home security are a beacon to thieves – so remember to check your alarm and never leave doors, windows or garages unlocked.

• Keep a light on indoors and outdoors if you are out visiting friends or family.

• It may be an idea to fit some motion detector security lighting.

• Try and arrange for parcels to be delivered to an alternative address instead of them being hidden by the bins.

• If buying bikes and/or electronic equipment for Christmas – mark them with your postcode.

It’s a good time to reflect on the past year; what grew well, what new vegetables or fruit you might like to try out next year- maybe something unusual, some heritage varieties, or how about planning a three or four-year crop rotation?

The principle of crop rotation is to grow specific groups of vegetables on a different part of the vegetable plot each year. This helps to reduce a build-up of crop-specific pest and disease problems, and it organises groups of crops according to their cultivation needs. Look up crop rotation on the internet for all the information you need.

Now is also a good time to clean tools, seed trays, pots, and other equipment as it will help prevent any diseases carrying over to infect next year’s seedlings. Also give the shed a good tidy out and clean.

You will need to decide whether to lift crops now or leave them in the ground. Brussels, winter cabbages, broccoli and kale can be left, as can leeks, parsnips, swede, and celeriac, but the latter group may benefit from a covering of straw to give them some protection. Other root crops are best lifted before the ground freezes. Other jobs to do this month are:

• Continue topping up compost and leaf mould bins, making sure that you burn or discard any plant material that looks diseased.

• You can still plant garlic if the soil is not frozen.

• Onion seeds can be sown in trays or pots in a gentle heat towards the end of the year.

• Manure the vegetable plot, using well-rotted manure – no need to dig in.

• Earth up Brussels sprouts stems to keep them secure from strong winds and remove any brown or yellow leaves; this will prevent the spread of grey mould and downy mildew.

• Make sure your winter brassicas are netted to prevent pigeons eating them and check for and repair any holes.

• It’s not too late to lift and divide large clumps of rhubarb, replanting the outer sections into soil enriched with well-rotted manure. Alternatively, select a large clump to force for an early crop next spring.

• December is the ideal time to winter prune apples and pears, gooseberries, and currants. Autumn raspberries can be pruned right back to ground level between now and February.

• Spray fruit trees and bushes with a winter wash to help control pests – any overwintering eggs should be destroyed.

• Replace any worn ties, stakes and wires on your fruit trees and bushes. Tighten any that are too loose and make sure that others are not too tight.

Christmas is a great time of the year, when hopefully everyone can have fun. The law only intervenes when things go wrong (and rightfully so), since Santa and Rudolph definitely enjoy the company of friendly lawyers. Indeed, they probably have their own department.

Consumer Law provides protection when products disappoint, such as:

1. Failure to be of “Satisfactory Quality”

2. Failure to be “Fit for the Purpose”

3. Failure to be “Delivered within a reasonable time”.

“Services” are subject to similar protections. The party that does not have good quality food is as equally disappointing as the child’s toy that lets the side down. All of this can be just as frustrating as anything else that goes wrong at this time of the year.

Employment Law raises its glass too. The Christmas party is a time for merriment, but everyone must always consider their colleagues. Not everyone has the same sense of humour!

Christmas can be a time to leave the car at home and grab a lift, perhaps a taxi, just to be safe so you can safely enjoy yourself and not have to worry. Christmas is about the fun and being free from risk. The Road Traffic Act and alcohol do not mix. You can be guilty of serious offences if over the limit for driving or simply ‘being in charge’ of a vehicle.

Computers are fun, but subject to much risk. Criminals target computers as well as telephones, so take care. We should keep doors and windows shut so as not to be subject to theft/burglary.

Family relationships and friendships really matter, so let us trust all will be safe and take care of themselves this Christmas.

Where Did That Go? 2022

By the time you read this, the tree could well be decorated, and the presents might even be wrapped and winging their way to Santa for delivery on his sleigh.

I can’t believe that the year has slipped by so quickly; it really has gone by in the blink of an eye.

As I write this, I am reflecting on a record year for Will and Probate and a turbulent year for the nation. If I am honest, it feels quite hard to reconcile the two. But it does show that small businesses like mine are the lifeblood of the economy, and, if we can buck the trend and shine light into the doom and gloom, then there is real hope for 2023.

If you read my last column, then you will know all about our mission to deliver peace of mind for all our clients, new and old. When we are facing uncertainty, peace of mind is at a premium, so our plan for next year focusses on delivering to more people than ever before.

It may be a corny thing to say, but “Peace of Mind” is one of the best gifts that you can give over the festive season. If we can help you and yours, we will be more than happy to do so. As ever, we will be closed over Christmas and the

new year, from December 23rd until January 3rd, to give our staff a well-deserved rest.
