Two years ago, I wrote, “Keep safe and think of those sunny days to come – things will improve, and that begins when you have to stay indoors with your loved one to celebrate Valentine’s Day!”
During that awful lockdown, we were forced to change so many of our regular habits and routines. Now, things have improved and, although it can be wonderful being together, indoors, for Valentine’s Day, it’s still lovely to be taken out for a gorgeous candle-lit romantic meal (don’t you think, Chris?) It was a very sad start to 2023 for my sister Paula and I when we lost our Mum, Sue, on New Year’s Day. She had just turned eighty and had bravely lived with several challenging health issues for many years. A multitude of fabulous memories of our times together remain. And, finally, the French author, Antoine de Saint-Exupery, wrote, “Life has taught us that love does not consist in gazing at each other, but in looking outward together in the same direction”.

“Friendship and memories” are more important than “money and medals” in the opinion of England Rugby Union’s recently appointed defence coach, Kevin Sinfield. What a fabulous attitude to not just sport but to so much in life too! Let’s hope it’s still in his mind as this month sees the much anticipated Six Nations tournament, and especially, later this year, when the World Cup is held in France during September and October!
Before then, though, there’s romance in the air this month with Valentine’s Day. We have lots of suggestions and ways to show your loved one just how much s/he means to you. Don’t forget, “Love means nothing in tennis, but it’s everything in life”.
At last, we move into our new home this month. At one point, several books fell onto my head during the packing, but I suppose I only have my shelf to blame. And finally, my son insists I should stop singing “Wonderwall”. I said maybe...

BeckyBY SARAH MAY
A brilliant reimagining of William Thackeray’s Vanity Fair set in ’90s London. Shoulder pads are out, crimped hair is in, supermodels are known by their first names, and Becky Sharp will do anything to escape her past.
Mingling with tabloid millionaires and trading favours and fortunes with royalty, she will stop at nothing to reach the top of the career ladder at the Mercury newspaper.
Landing scoop after scoop, Becky ruthlessly carves a place for herself in a society determined to ignore her. But she may have more in common with the people she writes about than she thinks - what takes a lifetime to build takes only a moment to destroy.

The Road

Gathering traces of archaeology, history and landscape from poems, church walls, hag stones and cropmarks, oxlips, killing places, hauntings and immortals, and things buried too deep for archaeology, “The Road” is a mesmerising journey into two thousand years of history, only now giving up its secrets.

Reprieve for Butterfield’s ‘Meals on Wheels’
Following much social media discussion regarding the Butterfield Centre and decisions to cut services over the Christmas period, two out of the three trustees at the Centre resigned, leaving Ian Sismey as the sole trustee left in post. Further to the resignations, an approach was made, via a letter of apology, to stalwart Butterfield supporters to help the organisation before Christmas.
The response by volunteers and clients was overwhelming, not only from the volunteers but also the clients, with a strong take-up of meals over the festive period. The Centre’s ‘Meals on Wheels’ service has since been reinstated.
Ian Sismey stressed that the most important part of the service was not necessarily the meal provided, but the daily contact with the elderly and vulnerable people within the community.
The Centre now asks anyone who can volunteer some time to deliver the service, to contact the Centre on 01778 421422. Please note that all individuals will need to be DBS checked before they can meet the Centre’s clients.

Mayor Words from the Mayor
At our Recreation Ground, I had the pleasure of meeting a unique football team, the Bourne Town Ladies Under 13s, the only all-female team currently providing league opportunities to young female footballers in this town. When you contrast this with over fifteen youth teams for boys playing regular fixtures, you can reach many different conclusions. A number of these girls first came to football through “Wildcats”, a footballbased activity for girls of primary school age, which sadly no longer exists.
For girls’ football to flourish, we need to offer them skills and support from our community. Local volunteers with enthusiasm are needed to provide football opportunities. Could you train as a coach (at no personal financial cost); or become a team manager; perhaps give a few minutes of your time as a ‘social media guru’ to raise their profile; or just be an interested parent or supporter of the teams? All these are vital roles to fill if girls’ football in Bourne is to flourish. If you are interested in being part of this, please leave your contact details at the Bourne Town Council Office on 01778 426123
Recently, I have enjoyed a second, totally entertaining evening arranged
by Bourne SKAMPS. Their consummate Christmas pantomime was hilarious and a joy to watch. Last month’s “Totally Talented” show, organised to foster and showcase local talent, was equally rewarding and a super opportunity for all budding entertainers to impress us all, whatever their age. I eagerly await their next show, a comedy musical play, “Hi-Di-Hi”, taking to the stage in March at Bourne Corn Exchange.
Finally, if anyone would like to express a point of view to me (in writing please), regarding the quality of street lighting, in and around Bourne town centre, I will be happy to receive this at Bourne Town Council, SK Community Point, 3 Abbey Road, Bourne PE10 9EF, marked “For The Mayor”. Thank you.

So Many Extra-Curricular Activities on Offer!
At Edenham, we try our utmost to provide children with as many opportunities as possible, both within and outside of the curriculum. Each term, it is the job of School Council to ask their peers what clubs they would like to see provided for the up-and-coming term. It is always great to see the selection that is brought back to us before we can go about trying to put these into place.
This term, children across the school will again be able to access a wide variety of clubs, such as multi-skills, homework, creative writing, science, 3D printing, football, cross country,
For those parents whose children wish to attend
school, but who may have issues with childcare, we are very fortunate in that Red Deer Rangers (which is run from Grimsthorpe Estate) offer the option to pick children up, once the club has finished, and take them to the wraparound care offered there.
We are always looking to give valuable and enjoyable experiences to our children. If you can come and see what we get up to and speak to us about opportunities available in our school, (or you know anyone who would like to), please do not hesitate to get in touch with us.

Town Benches Refurbished
Completion of a programme to refurbish the public benches throughout Bourne, Dyke and Cawthorpe was recently celebrated. The project has been undertaken by Bourne Town Council, with funding provided by The Len Pick Trust.
Town Clerk, Ian Sismey, said, “I was delighted, on behalf of the Town Council, to acknowledge completion of this project and the help of The Len Pick Trust in being able to ensure that residents and visitors to the town can now enjoy the refurbished benches.”
Andy Warner, Chairman of The Len Pick Trust, said, “Len Pick stated that our charity was for the townspeople of Bourne, and we are very happy to be able to fund this project as part of his desire to improve the amenities of Bourne”.
Pictured with Ian Sismey and Andy Warner is Gary Whitwell, of Gary’s Gardens Services, who undertook the work over the past few months.
AND THE WINNER IS...
Congratulations go to nine-year-old, Lucy who attends Bourne Westfield Primary Academy. She was absolutely thrilled to start the new year with her £50 winnings from our Christmas Novelty Hunt in the December issue of Discovering Bourne and is going to spend her winnings on some “girly toys”. As ever, a big thank you to everyone who took part, (“There’s always next year!”) and to all the shops and businesses in the town who made it all possible.

Super STEM Opportunities
Pupils at Morton C of E Primary School have recently enjoyed two fabulous opportunities from the world of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (S.T.E.M.).
Our Year Six children took part in a science design challenge, organised by our cluster of schools and St George’s Academy in Ruskington, near Sleaford. Joined by pupils from two other primary schools, we visited St George’s and met with Mr Mitchell, a DT teacher, and some students who introduced us to the school “Greenpower” Team. This is a project which supports schools to develop bespoke cars using a battery and engine.
Later, the children built their own mini battery-powered car
Little Owls Nursery
and designed a team flag and the car livery. Working in teams, the children rose to the challenge, impressing all the staff with their engineering skills. To finish the day, the children took part in a ‘Grand Prix’ style race.
The second engineering-themed visit was from the Silverstone Interactive Museum, kindly organised by Bourne Town Council. Children from across Key Stage Two took part in an interactive workshop, designed to teach them about forces in Formula One cars. The children had great fun looking at the different tyres used by the F1 cars, engine parts and even some of the drivers’ racing suits and helmets.
These engaging opportunities also showed the children about future careers, and it is great to see them enjoying events designed to raise their awareness of STEM.

Hay Fever Havoc…
Hay fever is caused by your immune system overreacting to an allergen, resulting in nasal inflammation and sore, itchy eyes. This response is triggered most commonly by pollen over the spring and summer months but for some it can also be triggered by pet hair and dust all year round.
Although most people only experience mild hay fever symptoms, the allergy itself can be debilitating for some, particularly those that haven’t responded to the usual over-the-counter medication or that prescribed by a doctor.
Here at Deep-in Aesthetics, Alistair the pharmacist who is used to dealing with this type of allergy, decided to train in how to administer the steroid injection, a proven effective method for many. It is a fast and easy treatment, with the drug itself being approved for use in the UK, but one that was

Steroid hay fever treatment does not cure hay fever, but the effects of the injection usually last the duration of the season. However, if you do require a second dose because of the severity of your allergy, then this too can be undertaken at a reduced rate. The procedure itself is pain-free and takes about ten minutes with no downtime needed afterwards, so you could go straight back to work!!
Let’s stop it before it stops you……
Comparing prices from the best-known pharmacy in the UK, a typical patient who suffers badly with hay fever would spend approximately £30 on each trip to the pharmacy to purchase tablets, a nasal spray and eye drops. Using the hay fever injection obviously removes the need to queue up at the pharmacy each month, using multiple products each day and, at a cost for the entire season of £70, represents a significant financial saving too.

One New Initiative After Another!
An impressive range of new initiatives which are being introduced at Bourne Leisure Centre confirms the notion that this facility, located next to Bourne Academy on Queens Road, is now most clearly, much more than just a swimming pool with a gym and some exercise classes.
Skilled instructors are providing new initiatives in the community. Rachel Fox, Health and Wellbeing Manager, says, “We are happy to offer something for everyone at Bourne Leisure Centre’
The principal aim of the new initiatives is to encourage and enable the community to keep active and healthy, irrespective of age or previous levels of fitness and mobility.
The programme of these new initiatives is wide-ranging and, from early indications, proving to be very popular.
✦ Exercise on Prescription: Anyone who may be recovering from surgery, or who may have medical or weight issues, can be prescribed by their GP or physiotherapist on to this twelve-week programme, free of charge, at the Centre. A bespoke schedule will be available, to involve exercise classes, gym activity and types of water therapy, all dependent on the specific medical needs of the individual. This has already produced successful outcomes of improved mobility, more confidence and better mental health for those involved.
✦ Specific treatments for certain health conditions: Cardio-rehabilitation classes are available for people with coronary issues and high blood pressure, whilst C.O.P.D. sufferers can access help to address breathing difficulties and lung conditions. Disability classes cater for a range of specific special needs. In keeping with a general attitude of inclusiveness, and actively encouraging participation, there is also a social aspect to these classes. Free tea and coffee along with the opportunity to sit and have a chat, Rachel sees as such an important part of all these initiatives.
Wellbeing walks: Every Wednesday and Friday morning, anyone can join, free of charge, an organised walk around Bourne starting from the Leisure Centre. Walks range from 45 to 90 minutes and 2 paces are offered. neighbourhood centred on the Leisure Centre. For a couple of hours which includes of course the tea, coffee and biscuits, why not meet up with others, overdose on healthy fresh air, exercise your body, and find that your mental health has taken a well-earned boost?
✦
FEBRUARY 2023
✦ “Warm Spaces”: For the next two months, and in response to the struggles being faced by so many of us during this cost-of-living crisis, the Leisure Centre will be opening its doors to its poolside café area, free of charge, to anyone seeking a “warm space” on Tuesday afternoons from 1.30pm until 3pm. A selection of activities, including books and board games, will be available, along with … you guessed it – tea and biscuits!
✦ Pre- and Post-natal Exercise Opportunities: Rachel is about to launch a programme into which ladies, either pregnant or newly delivered of their child, can opt. This promises to be friendly, “refreshment-accompanied” fun, but with a serious purpose of enabling mother and child to begin their wonderful life together in as healthy a condition as possible. Please contact Reception at the Leisure Centre for more details and to register your interest.
✦ “Good Boost”: This is another initiative which is designed to make a much wider use of the facilities and the talents of those employed
there, having been developed and trialled with the assistance of local physiotherapists. People suffering from, or recovering as a result of, musculoskeletal concerns, can now be referred to specific classes, some, but not all, based within the pool, where a bespoke exercise programme, linked to an accompanying tablet, can be offered. Times and days, along with any other specific details of any of the discussed initiatives are, of course, available at Reception.

Relationships and How Hypnotherapy Can Help
Relationship hypnotherapy is fast becoming one of the most effective ways to get your relationship back to how you would like it to be. When your relationships are in danger, we can become deeply affected as we are social beings needing healthy connections, intimacy, and conversations. When communications in a relationship start to fade, everything else follows!
Conflict in relationships is normal, as we are not always going to agree with one another, and it can be healthy for us to challenge each other; it can allow us to see from the other’s perspective. However, it’s when conflict becomes a constant presence in relationships and arguments become spiteful, aggressive and with no resolution, causing the most destruction.
Communicate effectively
And it’s not just for couples; it can be used for any two people who are struggling to relate to each other. –✦ Best friends who may have fallen out. ✦ Getting over a break-up to move on.

Arguing can become a habit and an impulse, creating repeated patterns of behaviour, and causing you to have the same argument, again and again. These patterns are held in our subconscious brain, and we become familiar with them so much that they almost happen automatically. Hypnotherapy can help you learn to cope with conflict and manage difficult emotions more easily. It can help you build confidence and self-esteem to help you to communicate more effectively.

Legal Spring Clean Time Again
WORDS FROM RICHARD WOOD
It is now approaching spring, and it does not seem long since that extreme heat of last summer. Perhaps it’s now time for our “legal resolutions” to be actioned.
Sometimes, we let drift the importance of our will, as if it were something that we would prefer not to contemplate. However, all of us should review our wills every five years or when a loved one is born or dies. The Law of Intestacy, where a will has not been made, does not protect everyone fairly.
Perhaps we are less mobile and able to make decisions, or worried about the future. Do we need to put in place a Lasting Power of Attorney? If we become ill and we have not done so, the alternative procedure may take much longer and, during the interim, we may not be able to pay for our needs.
If we are to live with a new partner, do we want to marry? Do we want to enter into a Cohabitation or Pre-Nuptial Agreement? The sad fact is that approximately 44% of live-in relationships fail, which can lead to costly litigation.
Do we understand our legal rights in each situation?
● Have we nominated the correct beneficiary on our pensions which pass outside our wills to protect loved ones?
● Are we thinking of that special house move?
● Will our holiday be up-to-scratch and are we familiar with consumer or contractual terms in case something goes wrong?
The law has an impact on so many of our rights but sometimes, it is seen as distant. However, it need not be. If you require help with any legal matter, we would be pleased to assist wherever possible.

Local Charity ‘Don’t Lose Hope’ Support Local Pantomime
Last September, Bourne’s Emma Taylor, a member of Langtoft Players, took on the huge challenge of producing a Christmas production of “Rumpelstiltskin” in Langtoft Village Hall.
“It was so important to me to ensure that this production was about ‘a sense of community’ and giving every person that turned up to audition an opportunity to get a part and get up on stage”, she explained. With a cast of twenty-three adults and thirteen children, some newcomers and some more seasoned, there were plenty of challenges. The result was a “brilliant” production, “well executed and fabulously directed”, according to NODA rep for East Midlands, Jules Jones. The panto was a complete sell-out and everyone had a wonderful time.
Emma, who is a regular volunteer at the Don’t Lose Hope Community Garden in Bourne, says her biggest highlight was to raise awareness of mental health and how utterly brilliant being involved in theatre and drama is for general selfcare, wellbeing and increasing confidence.
She was helped and supported by Dom Brister from Don’t Lose Hope, and he and his team made several of the stage props and painted some of the set. Emma is also grateful for the impressive contributions from talented, local photographer, George Parish. The panto managed to raise £493 for the charity, with personal donations from the public, and from the Players.
Don’t Lose Hope is a local mental health charity who provide mental health support and counselling for adults and for children from the age of four upwards.

Preparing beds before sowing begins in spring is one of the most important jobs this month.
In doing so, you'll help to aerate, drain, and warm the soil.
When digging over, be sure to incorporate plenty of homemade compost or composted manure. Alternatively, give beds a dressing of organic matter, then cover in plastic for a few weeks to reduce weeds and warm the soil.
If you have clay soil, spread a mix of organic matter and grit over the surface and dig it in to open the structure. Take care walking on compacted soil; lay wooden planks to walk on, or even consider creating raised beds.
It is possible to sow crops such as broad beans along with early peas (under cloches), parsnips and garlic, but only do so if the ground is not frozen or waterlogged. A good idea for sowing peas is to use lengths of plastic guttering: half fill them with good quality seed compost and sow the seeds about 2inches apart, cover with compost, water, and keep in a light spot under cover. Once the seedlings have grown to about 3 inches, make a shallow drill and slide the contents of the guttering into the drill. Make sure they are firmly bedded and water in. Other crops that can be sown outdoors (watch the weather and make a judgement) are turnips, rhubarb crowns and grape vines. Make sure that you have got all your seed potatoes by the end of the month and that
they are spread out in a seed tray, or in egg boxes, in a light, cool room where they can “chit” (sprout shoots) before being planted out. If the “chits” look pale and spindly, the room is probably too warm or too dark.
Other jobs for February include:
• Make sure winter cabbages, cauliflowers and broccoli are netted against hungry pigeons.
• Prune autumn raspberry canes by cutting right down to the ground and then mulch.
• Feed and mulch fruit trees and bushes.
• Rake your compost heap with a fork to aerate it, add water if it seems dry and then re-cover it to keep it warm.
• As they are still dormant, bare-rooted fruit trees can still be planted.
• Force rhubarb – cover with a bucket when you see the crown start to shoot.
• Sow seeds indoors e.g., tomatoes, leeks, lettuce, Brussels, sprouting broccoli, spinach. The main problem at this time of year is a general lack of light, so a cheap solution to prevent leggy, drawn seedlings is to cover a piece of cardboard with aluminium foil and place it to the north side of the seed tray, thus reflecting extra light onto the seeds.

How Do Agents Value Your Property?
If you’re planning to sell your property, the first question that you’ll inevitably ask is how much it’s worth. Your home may be invaluable to you and your loved ones, but it’s also got a market value.
FACTS AND FIGURES
Before valuing a property, it’s important to consider what other sales have achieved in the surrounding area (that’s sold prices, not listing prices). Agents will look at similar properties to yours and what they have sold for. To avoid overvaluing your home, they will also consider similar properties that haven’t sold at all or have sold for considerably less than they were priced at.
Another factor in valuing a home is the price per square foot. This amount varies from area to area. Unsurprisingly, city locations such as Central London boast the highest price per square foot, while many rural areas can come in at considerably less.
THE PROPERTY
When valuing a property, an agent will look at its general condition. Does it need lots of repairs? Has it been renovated recently? Is there potential to extend? In addition, things like the heating system and boiler, electrics and plumbing will play a part in determining the overall value.
The way the property is presented will also influence the selling price because a cluttered, messy home is harder to market (regardless of the décor) making it more difficult to attract potential buyers. (That’s why an agent will always advise sellers to have a clear-out before photographs are taken.)
Since the pandemic, the outside area of a property has had a huge impact on its value. Gardens now
play a much bigger role in the sale of a home and factors such as size, whether it’s overlooked, if it’s steep and/ or potential for improvement, could affect the overall value of a property.
Other factors that an agent will consider when valuing a property include:
✦ Number of bedrooms.
✦ Size and layout of the property.
✦ Potential to extend.
✦ On or off-street parking.
BY SCOTT STEWART, SALES MANAGER ESTATE AGENT IN BOURNE
✦ Location and proximity to schools and amenities.
✦ Type of road (cul-de-sac location or busy high street, for example).
THE SELLER
A good agent will know and understand a seller’s position before valuing a property. There’s a difference between sellers who need to sell as soon as possible and those that can wait a while for the right offer to come along. So, if a seller needs a quick sale, it might be worth valuing the property at a slightly lower price to attract more viewings.
If you’re looking to sell your property, contact Newton Fallowell, Bourne, on 01778 422567.

Let’s Talk About Mental Health
BY COLEEN EVERITT, ALTO ELECTRICAL LIMITED
Following on from my reflections from 2022, published last month, I now want to update you on the progress of our new building in which we will be able to provide space for various trades.
This is in the form of a woodworking workshop space, a metalworking workshop space, preparation areas, shot blasting facilities, and painting booths. To support the “non-hands-on” side of working in a trade, there will also be office spaces, event spaces and a dedicated learning/ teaching installation area.
One of the key aspects of this community is to be able to provide not only the business support through a close-knit local network of businesses, but also, we have managed to partner up with multiple allies to support both the physical and mental health of the service users.
As you can see from the photos, the walls are now going in, and some of the boarding has already been installed. We have been supported with discounted pricing by both Resource Engineering and Travis Perkins in getting the tools and materials for this project, which is very much appreciated.
This project is going to be run as a CIC (community interest company); the registration
is underway, meaning that we can give both reassurance to stakeholders and utilise a growing network and voice within the social enterprise and “third sector”, (that which covers charity and voluntary work.)
If you would like to support us, you can offer this support in the following ways:
➞ Advertising.
➞ Helping to spread the word.
➞ Professional advice.
➞ Donate tools that are no longer used.
➞ Provide materials and labour at a favourable rate.
➞ Provide an exclusive package for services you may offer for our service users. ➞ Help us to combat the construction mental health crisis.
If you would like to sponsor our project and have your company details on display on our “wall of heroes”, you can do this in the following ways:
➞ Donation of time towards the project.
➞ Donation of materials.
➞ Purchasing time or materials needed to donate.
➞ Invest in our project, (we have a thorough business plan!)
At Alto Electrical, we will of course still be continuing the work that we do and love. Our passion and efforts will always go into the restoration and alteration of heritage properties to ensure that the work is done in a way that is sympathetic to the building.
If you would like to enquire about any of this, please call the office on 01778 772595 and one of the team would be happy to talk to you.

Fall for the Person, Not the Profile!
By Eileen Le Voi at Safe Local Trades
February is the season of love and romance – but it is also a key date for fraudsters aiming to steal your money, as well as your heart.
Romance scams involve people being duped into sending money to criminals who use language to manipulate, persuade and exploit their victims. These requests can involve criminals claiming they need money for emergency medical care or for transport costs.
Signs your friend or family member may be involved in a romance scam:
1) They may be very secretive, or very sensitive, about their relationship or provide excuses for why their online partner has not video called or met them in person.
2) They may express very strong emotions and commitment to someone they have only just met.
3) They have sent, or are planning to send, money to someone they have not met face-to-face. They may take out loans or withdraw from their pension to send money.
How users can stay safe from romance scams:
• Be suspicious of any requests for money from someone you have never met in person, particularly if you have only recently met online.

Wills
Why do I need a will?
Wills are important to ensure that your assets pass to those you would like. If you are not married, your partner will not automatically inherit your estate.
If you have children, you can also use a will to nominate guardians to ensure they are looked after if the worst may happen.
Lasting Powers of Attorney
What are they?
Lasting Powers of Attorneys (LPAs) are documents that allow someone that you nominate as your attorney, to deal with your financial or health affairs on your behalf.
These are used when you lose mental capacity but must be created while you can still make decisions. If you do not create these in time, then unfortunately the solution is more costly and time consuming.
Probate
What is it?
When a person sadly passes away, some banks and institutes require a Grant of Probate to enable you to collect in their assets. If you are selling a house, a solicitor will require this to complete the sale.
We are licensed to assist with the probate application on your behalf, as well as distribute the estate, making everything simpler at this difficult time.

If you are sadly facing a separation in the New Year, there are different ways the two of you can approach this traumatic life-event.
Resolution, the national organisation representing 6,500 family justice professionals, who believe in a constructive, non-confrontational approach to Family Law matters, have just held a Good Divorce Week to publicise the many alternatives to court available to separating couples, and to lobby MPs for more help in providing such support.
Ten years ago, legal aid was withdrawn from family cases and since then, separating families have found it harder to access help and information about their options. By providing legal advice and information early in the process, couples are more likely to understand their rights and responsibilities and are more likely to seek alternatives to court.
One of the most successful, is mediation which, since the change in the law in 2013 has declined dramatically, placing further pressure on overstretched family courts. Mediations are currently running at around half the level they were ten years ago, 13,609 down to 7,369 last year.
At a time when the family courts and the judiciary are suffering from a lack of resources and a massive backlog, and the spouses and their children suffer avoidable stress from delay, we believe early legal advice is a vital part of the solution.
Family Law solicitors can discuss all the dispute resolution alternatives with you from the start, such as mediation, collaboration, arbitration, and solicitor negotiation. Avoiding court is the way to reducing legal costs, the stress of the process and the time it takes to reach a resolution. Contact a local Family Law specialist for more information.

Parents: Your Child, Their Future, Protect it for them!
Securing your child’s future is the most important thing in a parent’s life.
As a young mum of two myself, I never understood the importance of having a will in the event of something happening to me. By appointing a guardian and financially planning their future, I have now protected my children. You can do the same!
Being a parent is, of course, very challenging; you must make decisions that have their best interests at heart such as choosing schools, their health and welfare and overall lifestyle. Death is our biggest fear as parents. Who is going to make these decisions when I’m not here?
It’s simple … if you do not have a will in place that appoints a guardian for your child, unfortunately your child will become the responsibility of Social Services and you run the risk of your child going into care. Social services will do extensive searches into your family history, and they get to decide who is the ‘right guardian’ for your child. This can be a long process but also very traumatic for your child. With over 108,000 children currently in the care system in the UK, please do not allow your child to become “another statistic”!
Appointing a guardian is something you need to consider carefully; you’re allowing someone you trust, to care and make all parental decisions on
your behalf. It would be advisable to consider the lifestyle, health, and welfare of the person you are entrusting with the care of your child.
It is incredibly important to have these conversations with family or friends who you would consider raising your child/ren for you.
Financial planning within your will is just as important. Have you thought about a Trust? Not only does a Trust cater for monetary funds, but you could also be leaving your home to your children, and this was one of my key concerns when writing my will. You’ve appointed a Guardian, set up your Trust, so who are your Trustees? This should be more than one person, who will have significant control over your child’s inheritance. They can use the money to fund your child’s lifestyle and education in an appropriate way until your child inherits. This also applies to stepchildren, foster children and adoptions.
Once your child reaches adulthood, they can use these funds to go to university, get their first car or even a deposit on a home!
Give yourself “peace of mind”.

‘Reservoir Dodge’ and a Secret History
by Brynley Heaven
The big call last year was our near-miss with the new South Lincs reservoir. Speculation suggested that it would be somewhere between Bourne and Spalding. In the end, when the announcement was made, everyone was taken off guard. The chosen site between Swaton, Scredington and Helpringham is not even properly in the fen, better described as a bumpy patch of fen edge. It is interesting to read the Anglian Water Site Selection Report [dated October 2022].
It is quite a revealing document, even if they are exceedingly shy about the actual scoring process used. They looked at a very large number of possible reservoir sites, including fifteen near Bourne. They seem to have eventually picked one that was less vulnerable to catastrophic flooding, which might be admirably far-sighted, but also disconcerting for what it says by implication!
If a reservoir location, like a wartime airfield, comes down from on
high as a serious shock, many profound land-use changes creep up on you unawares. The early 20th century Bourne Wood notice illustrated here is a case in point. We like to think of the woods going back to time immemorial and there is a grain of truth in this.
While the wildwood is all gone, there is abundant evidence for the staying power of some woodland and hedgerow features. I once went to hear Oliver Rackham speak at Grimsthorpe. As foremost academic interpreter of woods in Cambridgeshire and Essex and author of ‘Ancient Woodland’, it was reasonable to think he might publish on the Grimsthorpe Estate’s high quality Wood Pastures –sadly, he died shortly afterwards.
There is a secret history to the impressive chain of woods running south to north in the Bourne area. You can check the status of every little woodland compartment for free, online [magic.defra.gov.uk]. Ancient Woodland is the official phrase, although this can include a plantation sitting on the exact footprint of an Ancient Woodland, so beware. Suddenly, half way through Temple Wood, the Ancient Woodland designation falls away. During the Great Depression of the 1930s, this was a rare state experiment in the direction of labour (other less decorous terms are available). Unemployed men from the ‘distressed areas’ were drafted in to do drainage and plant woods. In theory, it was voluntary, but on pain of losing the dole, so not really!
It was military-model discipline, with pick and shovel work for ten-hour shifts. Desmond King has gone through the archives and discovered how both Treasury officials and Government ministers thought they were “hardening up” men who had become “discouraged”. The policy of rearmament saw the Depression ease and the camps close. But we can enjoy their legacy today when we take a stroll.
