Iwas fascinated to hear that the actress, Dame Joan Collins had recently turned ninety, thus becoming one of the very few women who have remained international celebrities for eight decades. She puts her longevity and success down to energy, exercise, optimism, work and “living for today”. I quite like her take on the ‘Carpe Diem’ idea: “Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is a gift; that’s why it’s called the present!”

Well, what a fabulous summer this looks like turning into, with long spells of warm and sunny weather ahead; I hope that hasn’t put the curse on the weeks to come, as heavy rain and storms never seem to be too far away in our wonderful country!

Whatever the weather, you’re always likely to ‘discover’ something to interest, inform and, hopefully, entertain you in your ‘favourite local magazine’!

We recently returned from an unusually hot and dry Lake District. Every year, I walk past the primary school in Coniston, whose ‘mission statement’ reads: “Work Hard, Aim High, Have Fun”. How fortunate that those lucky youngsters not only have the glorious Fells and Lake Coniston nearby, but also a management team who can, in so few words, provide such a wise message, one which could help us all live our lives!

Mungo Jerry’s 1970 hit, “In the Summertime”, includes the lines, “We’re always happy| Life’s for livin’ yeah, that’s our philosophy”. Yes, summer is here at last, holidays are on the horizon, and I hope that you’re all finding “livin’ easy” and agreeing that indeed, “life’s for livin’”. And finally,

● When my wife asked if I’d seen our dog bowl, I told her I hadn’t realised that he could play cricket.

● Doesn’t it irritate you when people confuse “your” and “you’re”? There so stupid!

Enjoy the read.

The Making of Another Major Motion Picture Masterpiece

A wildly ambitious story of the making of a colossal, star-studded, multimillion-dollar superhero action film, and the humble comic book that inspired it all. Spanning 80 years of a changing America and culminating in the opening of the film, we meet a colourful cast of characters that together create Hollywood magic.

Funny, touching, and wonderfully thought-provoking, it offers an insider’s take on the momentous efforts it takes to make a film. At once a reflection on America’s past and present, on the world of show business and the real world we all live in. Signed copies available.

A Woman’s Game

Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow

This is the story of Sam and Sadie. It’s not a romance, but it is about love. When Sam catches sight of Sadie at a crowded train station one winter morning, he is catapulted back to the brief time they spent playing together as children. Their unique spark is instantly reignited. What comes next is a story of friendship and rivalry, fame and creativity, betrayal and tragedy, perfect worlds, and imperfect ones. And, ultimately, our need to connect: to be loved and to love.

This is the astonishing history of women’s football: from the game’s first appearance in England in the late nineteenth century to the incredible teams that at their height drew 53,000 spectators to Goodison Park, through to its fiftyyear ban in the UK and the aftershocks when restrictions were lifted. Following the game’s meteoric rise in recent years, Suzanne Wrack considers what the next chapter of this incredible story might - and should - be.

Want to Build Confidence, Develop Skills, and Have Fun? – Here’s How …

“Theatre Workshop Fun” is a children and young people’s drama workshop which focuses on developing performance-related skills that can be applied to everyday life scenarios.

Awarm, friendly, and inclusive group run by Drama Co-ordinator, Em Taylor, and supported by Kim Crichton (children’s chaperone), Kathleen (an A Level Drama student) and Reece (a GCSE Drama student at Bourne Academy), the aim is to support children and young people to build confidence.

Supported by Councillor Paul Fellows, Em says, “Having run some workshops in Bourne at the Red Hall in 2019, we were so very lucky to have Paul come on board to provide expert advice and help us get our group fully established. Paul recognised the need to support young people in this way, having just come out of the Covid 19 pandemic. We are so grateful for his continued support, interest, and expertise in this area.”

The group focuses on a whole range of performance-related skills through fun theatre/ drama activities and games. Examples of skills that are encouraged and supported include stage presence, voice projection and articulation, animation and facial expressions and characterization.

“The children in the group are a lovely, friendly bunch who work together well and share some

fabulous ideas. With over twenty children on our books, we are currently looking to split the group into two age groups, 6-10 years, and 11-15 years. We have such a lot of plans for the future and, being such a small group with limited funding, we are hoping for some sponsorship for our own logo and some coloured T-shirts for the children to wear at the sessions to provide a sense of belonging. We are also always on the lookout for costumes and drama equipment/ resources and ‘local talents’ to come and showcase some skills at the workshops. If anyone can help with any of this, please contact me at theatreworkshopfun@gmail.com,” she explains.

“We are also forming an adult group to help build confidence in the exact same way as the children’s group, and are hoping to put on a Christmas pantomime, to help raise funds for the group and for local charity, ‘Don’t Lose Hope’. We are currently looking at scripts and hope to hold our first auditions late in August. It’s all very exciting!” she enthuses.

The young people’s sessions run on a Wednesday from 6pm to 7.30pm at Elsea Park Community Centre. If you would like to book a space on the weekly workshops, please contact Em for a registration pack at theatreworkshopfun@gmail.com.

LDC Rocks the New Theatre in Sparkling “Icon” Show

Iwas so fortunate to have been invited to a recent show at Peterborough’s New Theatre on May 28th for two reasons. Firstly, I have known the choreographer Lauren Willis (whose dance company, LDC, is her very own successful concept) for many years and have been particularly impressed with the way in which, through her talent, dedication, and sheer hard work, she has created a highly successful dance school in Bourne. Secondly, by going along with my niece, Tori, and her daughter, Jessica, we would be able to see just how LDC’s fabulous repertoire of high-energy street dance routines would appeal to all generations … and wow, what an appeal that was!!

“Icon” takes inspiration from the famous musical icons who have influenced the dance and pop industry over the recent decades. These include Michael and Janet Jackson, Lady Gaga, Beyonce, Rihanna, Britney Spears, and Missy Elliott. The whole auditorium rocked as the energetic and very talented group of 120 dancers performed their impressive routines, with smiling faces all around. Lauren’s choreography

was outstanding, and it was such an emotional moment when Lauren made her guest appearance on the stage to join her much-loved “LDC family”!

Along with many other fans, I am now eagerly looking forward to LDC’s next big production, “Matilda: The Musical” on January 6th and 7th, 2024, at Stamford Corn Exchange - Save the date!!

Phobias and Fears

There are many phobias that we can suffer from, the most common being fear of spiders, needles, heights, public spaces, public speaking and flying. The intense fear we feel means we spend a lot of time avoiding certain things or situations, and our world becomes smaller and smaller as we stop enjoying doing some of the things we used to do.

A phobia is defined as a persistent fear of an object or situation in which the sufferer is compelled to go to great lengths to avoid certain situations. The fear is typically disproportional to the actual danger posed, often being recognized as irrational.

There are, in the main, two types of phobias. There is the simple phobia where a person reacts negatively when they come into contact with the thing that causes fear, for example dentists, needles, flying or spiders. Then there is the complex phobia which causes fear and anxiety continually.

Free your fears

One example is emetophobia (a fear of being sick) and considered to be one of the most common phobias in the world. It can affect the sufferer in ways such as not wanting to collect their children from school in case that child is feeling ill, or maybe even putting off becoming pregnant because of the fear of sickness or even not having medical treatments.

Another complex phobia is social phobia (a fear of social situations, such as weddings, public speaking or simply going out to dinner with people - even if they’re friends!) Frequently, people with a social phobia have a fear of embarrassing themselves or of being humiliated in public.

The human mind is an amazing thing; undoubtedly, the most powerful and resourceful problem-solving device in the known universe. However, our minds have developed as part of an evolutionary process, and our mind contains powerful tools for learning and dealing with danger. In our modern lives where these “fight, flight or freeze” responses are generally less useful, strong behavioural responses or fears can nevertheless be set up. It is usually when we are stressed or anxious these primitive parts of the brain can sometimes overreact and set up patterns of fear or thought that you find difficult or impossible to control.

The good news is that Solution Focused Hypnotherapy helps with all these different types of phobias, allowing you to feel free to live a normal life again.

Have You Discovered Bourne Indoor Farmers’ Market?

Bourne Indoor Farmers’ Market started earlier this year and regularly attracts hundreds of savvy visitors each month. It provides an outlet for lots of small local businesses to sell directly to the Bourne community.

There’s plenty to please local foodies. Stalls include fresh produce, bakery, cheese, butchers’ produce, chutneys, vegan foods, honey, curry, ales, cakes, and handmade crafts which make fantastic gifts.

All fifty pitches are usually fully booked, and the hall is bustling. We regularly introduce new stalls alongside existing stallholders, so the line-up is varied from month to month. Think Once... Think Twice...

THINK ONCE: When considering your aesthetics treatment, you should take the time to consider the experience of your practitioner. Here at Deep-in Aesthetics we have been established for over five years and have over sixty ‘five star’ reviews from our clients which can be accessed via Google and Yell.com.

THINK TWICE: Any prospective aesthetics client should take the time to consider what could happen if all did not go to plan. During our years of trading, we have never had an adverse event and Alistair is fully medically qualified to deal with these events should they ever occur. Think about whether you want to be in the hands of a pharmacist with over twenty-five years’ experience and a master’s degree in prescribing as well as the obvious qualifications in aesthetics, or a beauty technician who has done an afternoon course to enable her to add a sale alongside gel nails?

THINK SAFETY: Our client base value our expertise and care, and you can never underestimate just how important it is that people have trust in you and peace of mind that it’s going to be carried out safely. You only have to read our reviews to know that it is something we deliver, time and time again. Safety is key to us.

Now, as we have gone through the sensible part, allow us to share some good news with you …. we got married in May this year and we would like to celebrate our happiness with you and offer all our clients, old and new, the chance to receive 10% off any treatment booked in July this year.

We want to thank everyone for trusting in us and supporting us so that we were able to make this our

full-time profession. We love helping both the men and women that come to us feel better, whether that be emotionally or physically, as we also offer medical treatments alongside the usual aesthetic ones. We look forward to seeing you soon…….

The Perils of Happy Relationships

WORDS FROM RICHARD WOOD

The sun is out and some of us will no doubt be attending weddings this summer - immensely happy events. However (and my sincere apologies for pointing this out, as I am at least as optimistic as most!) BUT sometimes things can go wrong … and not just falling over on the pavement on the way!

Most of the legal profession will doubtless believe as I do, that we are traditional and believe in secure relationships. The professional “sadness” is that we cannot escape risk. As human beings, we live in a world of increasing risk, all the time.

Some people are made for one another, and some males or females may become less charming and more controlling over time. They may not be reliable financially, or in their love of kindness or faithfulness. Only about 56% of romantic relationships work out, whether married, civil partnership or, more informally, living together without a lot of legal input.

It has been said that a ‘Pre-Nuptial Agreement’ may harm the chances of a happy relationship. However, it can take out some of the uncertainty of a split in the earlier years of a relationship.

A ‘Deed of Beneficial Interest’ can set out some basic protection in terms of contributions on property purchase or otherwise.

Promises within relationships of an informal agreement for one person to use capital to build on a house, or a reciprocal agreement that this will “form part of their pension” may not be entirely reliable.

Mothers taking time out to care for children may affect their income generating capacity which might prejudice them. This is especially so if they give up a lucrative job to move in with their partner.

In all these scenarios, parties need to be transparent with maximum empathy for each other. Anyone needing help should contact our Bourne office on 01778 423376.

Age is no Barrier: Martin’s Remarkable Fitness Transformation

In a world that often associates fitness transformations with youth, it’s important to recognise that age should never be a barrier to achieving a healthy and fit physique. Martin, a client in his mid-50s, serves as a remarkable example of how commitment and hard work can help anyone overcome their starting point and achieve incredible results.

Over a year ago, Martin decided to make a change in his life, having allowed his body and lifestyle to slip away, leading to excess body fat and a host of associated health problems. With dedicated training and a personalised nutrition plan, he embarked on his transformative journey. The first few weeks were undoubtedly challenging, as his body adapted to the new demands and his mind adjusted to a disciplined routine. Yet, Martin remained determined, knowing that consistency and patience were key. With time, perseverance began to pay off; excess body fat started melting away, revealing the lean muscle beneath. He experienced increased strength and stamina, accompanied by a boost in his confidence and self-esteem.

Initially, Martin’s aim was to improve his overall well-being, adopt healthier eating habits, and attain a physique that reflected his dedication. However, his perspective changed, as he set his sights on an ambitious goal: to grace the bodybuilding stage, a pursuit that may appear insurmountable for someone of his age.

Nevertheless, he defied expectations and recently participated as a natural athlete in the Novice Masters category of the UKDFBA Novice Classic, securing an admirable second place. Martin’s story serves as a powerful reminder that age should never be a deterrent to pursuing fitness goals. Regardless of one’s starting point, it’s the commitment to change and the willingness to put in the effort that truly matters. Excuses such as limited time, past failures, or doubts about physical capabilities are merely obstacles that can be overcome.

If you are struggling to get started or feel like you need additional guidance and support on your

fitness journey, I am here to help. With a limited number of coaching spaces available, I would love to help you achieve your goals and transform your body and mind. Contact me today to learn more about my coaching services.

How to Keep Your Home Cool and Energy-Efficient in the Summer

As the temperature rises during the summer months, it’s important to keep your home cool and comfortable without breaking the bank. Here are some tips for keeping your home cool and energy-efficient this summer:

Relegate Your Halogen Lights:

Not only are halogen lights heavy users of electricity, but they are a fire risk. This is because they get very hot, wasting energy, and pose a bigger fire risk than any other type of lightbulb.

Use Your Ceiling Fans:

Ceiling fans can help circulate cool air throughout your home, reducing your reliance on your air conditioning system. Make sure your ceiling fans are set to rotate anticlockwise during the summer months, as this will create a cooling breeze.

Keep Your Curtains and Blinds Closed:

Closing your curtains and blinds during the hottest parts of the day can help block out the sun’s rays and keep your home cooler. Consider installing blackout curtains or shades to keep your home even cooler.

Use Energy-Efficient Cooling Systems:

If you’re in the market for a new air conditioning system, consider investing in an energy-efficient model. These systems use less energy than traditional air conditioners, which can save you money on your energy bills.

Maintain Your Air Conditioning System:

Ventilation and Air Conditioning) technician at least once a year.

Use Your Appliances Wisely:

Appliances such as your oven, dishwasher, and clothes dryer can generate a lot of heat, which can make your home feel warmer. Use these appliances during the cooler parts of the day or consider using them less frequently during the summer months.

In conclusion, keeping your home cool and energyefficient during the summer months doesn’t have to be difficult. By using your ceiling fans, keeping your curtains and blinds closed, using energy-efficient cooling systems, maintaining your air conditioning system, and using your appliances wisely, you can stay cool and comfortable while saving money on your energy bills.

Regular maintenance of your air conditioning system can help keep it running efficiently and effectively. Change your air filters regularly, and have your system inspected by a professional HVAC (Heating, 01778

Make Sure that IT Security is High on Your Holiday Check List

The long summer holidays are almost here, and many of us will be taking a well-earned break; either some down-time with our other half or a family adventure with the children. However, the chances are (and these chances soar if you have teenagers!) that your mobile phone or tablets will be catching that flight or ferry with you. You may be needing to catch up on work emails or simply want to flood your social media channels with photos of your getaway. But how do you look after those devices like laptops and PCs that will most likely be staying at home? Home insurance and/or travel insurance will cover most cases of theft or accidental damage (be sure to check your policy) but here are a few simple steps to make sure your devices are safe:

• Backup your devices: It’s so simple and it should be something you do regularly but it’s easy to forget. Don't just back up to the cloud; consider having a backup to a separate hard drive too.

• Update your software: Again, a simple task that’s easily forgotten but can make a huge difference if anything goes wrong. Making sure you have up-to-date security software is paramount!

• Secure your devices: Use a PIN, pattern lock or two factor authentication. Don’t forget to add security authentication to your laptops and PCs and please think carefully about any passwords you are using.

• Be wary of which Wi-Fi you connect to: Think carefully before connecting to unsecured public Wi-Fi as there’s a huge risk that your devices could be hacked, sensitive data stolen or get infected with malware.

• Be careful what you share on social media: You might think you’re just making your friends envious with your beach photos but if you make it public that you are away from home, any thieves will be able to take advantage of your absence. Check who sees your posts and consider making it private to ‘friends only’, so you know only those you trust can see where you are.

Safe Local Trades member Ben Hemp from File Genie can offer a wealth of advice and support, whether it’s about updating your software or backing up your devices. Get in touch at www.member.safelocaltrades.com/file-genie

Could Your Garden Threaten Your House sale?

Having outside space can add significant value to a property. But what happens when your garden oasis threatens the chance of selling your home? Some lush green plants might look attractive but could signal trouble for a house sale.

The plants that may impact your selling price:

1

Japanese Knotweed: The number one culprit for knocking value off homes which can grow up to 10cm in a day and is illegal to plant. The powerful root system can weaken the foundations of a property, damage drainage systems and uproot paving slabs. It’s been labelled an ‘invasive’ plant and can knock as much as 15% off house prices. Properties with it have struggled to get mortgages, and buyers often require a special survey to assess potential for damage. You’ll need a specialist to remove it.

2Giant Hogweed: Although quite attractive, it can cause serious skin irritation and requires expert removal. Understandably, gardens with Giant Hogweed will also affect how much your property sells for and ethically, you should let potential buyers know if you’ve spotted it in your garden.

4Large Trees (Oak, Poplar and Willow): If you’ve got one in your back garden or close to your home, be warned it could impact your house price. Roots of large trees can spread out up to forty metres, wriggling their way under building structures and paving stones, and causing general damage. It’s best to consult an expert tree surgeon if you’ve got a large tree in your back garden, or speak to the Local Authority if you have one at the front.

5Other plants that could hamper your house sale include:

Ivy: Whilst pretty to look at, it can get into cracks, lift roof tiles and damage pipework.

Himalayan Balsam: Don’t be fooled by the beautiful purple flowers; this is illegal to plant. It grows so fast it can quickly kill off other plants and cause a nuisance.

Leylandii trees: Typically grown as a hedge, they can annoy neighbours by blocking out light, whilst the fast-spreading roots can cause damage.

3

Bamboo: Just like Japanese Knotweed, bamboo plants can grow incredibly quickly and wreak havoc on a property’s foundations and brickwork. Whilst not illegal to plant, the roots can spread to neighbouring properties, and if it starts causing damage, you could be liable for costs.

When selling a property, people always tend to deal with interior issues before going to market. But it’s a good idea to also assess the front and back gardens for any concerns that could arise. That way, you won’t be caught off guard as a potential sale progresses.

Hedingham Harvest

Grandfather’s eight children worked in the fields before and after school, without pocketmoney or thanks, and with regular thrashings. There were no birthday presents … yet their memories are full of the pleasures of a country childhood – poaching, bullbaiting, skating, birds-nesting, flower collecting.”

Of all Lincolnshire village histories, a huge treasure trove, none is as vital and well-written as “Hedingham Harvest. Victorian Family Life in Rural England”. By taking down the memories of his own extended family, Geoffrey Robinson plunges into the economically depressed, libidinous ‘genetic lottery’ of the late Victorian village world. The shocking opening sentence is as compelling as any such by Jane Austen:

“Active though he was with a succession of servant girls and neighbour’s wives, my grandfather did not

neglect to shake almost nightly with his reluctant wife the kaleidoscope of family genes.”

Here is an unsentimental and affecting rustic complement to Laurie Lee’s “Cider with Rosie”, containing much that is uncomfortable; a riposte to village histories which dwell too long on piety and prudery, status and steeples, or dry minutes discovered in the Parish Chest.

At the blacksmith’s: “the sound of their hammers rang out into the village, a long percussion when the hammer struck the white-hot iron, then two short ones on the anvil to cool the hammer for its next blow. The huge Lincolnshire carthorses stood tethered near the doors for their shoes to be clapped on almost red hot, with a puff of smoke from the seared hoof, and the acrid smell drifting over The Green.”

“If my forebears were any guide, fourteen or more children were common, the rudimentary medical services allowed natural selection to work freely upon them. Those who survived measles, croup, whoopingcough, scarlet fever, smallpox, and meningitis faced the scythe of tuberculosis that cut swathes … and survived despite the attentions of Doctor P H R, with his bottle of black leeches. Whatever his professional shortcomings, he had charm and my mother, at the age of seventeen, fell subject to it while he was supposed to be treating her for diphtheria. She recovered from the illness, but not from her physician, and my brother owes his initials P H R to the aftereffects of her medical treatment, which included gifts of scent and flowers, and visits to the doctor’s lovely house, where peacocks strutted on the lawns.”

‘Hedingham’ does not exist, at least no more than “Akenfield”, Ronald Blythe’s classic account of Suffolk village life. Waddingham, a village off Ermine Street, north of Lincoln, fits the description. When the book was completed in 1977, this flimsy disguise was only good manners.

Geoffrey Robinson grew up in a Lincolnshire farmhouse, an unimpeachable yellowbelly: “I had garrulous aunts and uncles, and a mother who talked less but wrote more. If I can give a fairly detailed account of rural life in Lincolnshire towards the end of the nineteenth century, and if it seems surprisingly un-Victorian, that is how it has been described to me by people who lived then.”

The Wicked Stepmother How Predatory Marriage Can Destroy A Family

There is a huge amount of chat in my profession at the moment about predatory marriage and how a quirk of the law can lead people to lose their inheritance. In fact, the Law Society is currently pushing for a change in the law to prevent this from happening.

So, what is Predatory Marriage?

Typically, it happens when an elderly, wealthy man (I’m afraid men are anecdotally more vulnerable!) is targeted by a younger woman who befriends him and then enters a relationship that ultimately leads to a marriage. It does happen to women as well.

I am sure we have all seen it; a couple who really don’t seem to fit … one old, one young, one wealthy, one not so much. Now, I am a huge believer in love and most of these relationships are probably a true love match, but not all of them will be.

At this point, you are probably thinking, ‘That’s interesting, but I don’t see the problem’. But there is one and it can be a pretty big one! The marriage to

the new partner will revoke any will that the people getting married may have already put in place. This means that any planning that has been done in the past is invalidated and will lead to the predatory spouse inheriting the majority, if not all, of their victim’s estate. It will lead to the victim’s children and chosen beneficiaries losing out, and will often lead to expensive court cases, as the family try to reclaim what should have been theirs. We have seen in my previous articles just how difficult that can be.

Now, the good news is that most of the problems can be avoided. We can’t stop old men’s heads being turned by younger women. But, with good planning, we can ensure that the family’s wealth is protected for the family line and that the “Wicked Stepmother” never gets her claws in too deep! The only way to do this is to plan well in advance, so the best time to do this is now, if you are worried about an elderly parent, or about what might happen to your wealth in the future.

Please call us on 01778 252301 and book a free consultation to discuss your concerns.

Wills

Why do I need a will?

Wills are important to ensure that your assets pass to those you would like. If you are not married, your partner will not automatically inherit your estate.

If you have children, you can also use a will to nominate guardians to ensure they are looked after if the worst may happen.

Lasting Powers of Attorney

What are they?

Lasting Powers of Attorneys (LPAs) are documents that allow someone that you nominate as your attorney, to deal with your financial or health affairs on your behalf.

These are used when you lose mental capacity but must be created while you can still make decisions. If you do not create these in time, then unfortunately the solution is more costly and time consuming.

Probate

What is it?

When a person sadly passes away, some banks and institutes require a Grant of Probate to enable you to collect in their assets. If you are selling a house, a solicitor will require this to complete the sale.

We are licensed to assist with the probate application on your behalf, as well as distribute the estate, making everything simpler at this difficult time.

Saturday 22nd July 2022

Elsea Park Community Centre, 1 Sandown Dr, Bourne, PE10 0US

10am –4pm

(Onsite parking available with additional parking in the surrounding area)

The Church is facing its greatest spiritual battle since its inception, and believers that do not understand this, or minimise the reality of the battle that the end time church is facing, are at a disadvantage.

Pastor Colin is one of the speakers on the day, and the author of “When Church Hurts" (available in hardback, paperback, and eBook at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Rakuten Kobo).

In it, he covers such subjects as:

● What the Bible says about godly and false leadership.

● Warning signs that may indicate a religiously dangerous environment.

● How scriptures are twisted to manipulate, dominate, and control others.

● When leaders sexually exploit their congregants.

● How Satan operates in churches.

A freewill offering will be taken on the day for anyone who would like to contribute. Donations can also be made through our PayPal Charities account at Paypal.com/gb/ fundraiser/charity/3614779.

ALL attendees must register online via Eventbrite (Restoration Day, Spiritual Warfare, Bourne, Lincolnshire).

NEW CHRISTIAN HOUSE FELLOWSHIP IN BOURNE

There are already wonderful churches doing great things here in Bourne. However, not everyone feels able to fit in with traditional churches.

Here at Love House Fellowship, we have church in the comfort of our home every Sunday for worship, prayer, Holy communion, bible teaching, fellowship, tea, and coffee. Wednesday evening is bible study, all in an intimate and friendly setting in our home.

If you are not part of any church and prefer a smaller church group for fellowship, then Love House Fellowship might just be what you are looking for. Contact us and we can arrange an initial meet-up at the new Costa Coffee in Bourne for a chat and to answer any questions you may have.

We look forward to meeting you.

Words from the Mayor

These guys work so hard to raise money for our local community and are always looking for new members. The local companies who support them to make this happen are also to be applauded.

As your Mayor, I look forward to serving the people of Bourne this year and hope to provide some community events, one of which will be a Civic Dinner on Saturday November 11th in the Corn Exchange. This is an event open to everyone and if you are interested in attending, I would love to hear from you.

This event will raise money for my local charities this year (the Butterfly Hospice, Community Response Lincolnshire, and Dyke Village Hall). I hope to meet a lot of new people this year as Bourne is a growing community. Should you wish to contact me, please

feel free to call me on 07875 308837 or at the Bourne Town Council offices.

I would like to thank Father Chris from Bourne Abbey Church for all he has done for our community over the last twenty years and wish him a long and happy retirement. Thank you for my service on June 11th. The other dignitaries that attended really enjoyed it, so thank you to the Abbey Church Hall for their help in doing teas and coffees, and to Nannys for providing the wonderful buffet.

I am looking forward to working with the new Town Council as we have some new councillors and are hoping to co-opt four more onto the council in the very near future. I would like to invite anyone who would like to get involved with the ‘Bourne in Bloom’ this year to contact me on 07875 308837 or at the Bourne Town Council offices. We are always looking for volunteers to help with community events.

“Solvitur Ambulando” – Joe’s Rambling Again!

The following reached us recently from one of Bourne’s foremost ramblers, Joe Orford. The sixth anniversary of the tragic passing of Maddy, the eighteen-year-old youngest daughter of Joe and Barbara, will be upon us in August. In those six years, almost £15,000 has been raised for Cardiomyopathy UK by this couple from many fundraising activities.

Joe writes: “ ‘Solvitur ambulando’ translates to ‘It is solved by walking’. Not the complete answer, but it does help with your physical and mental wellbeing. Anyway, one winter’s evening last year, I clicked a button and signed up to walk the Cleveland Way on July 7th, 2023. It’s a guided group challenge of 109 miles in six days over the North Yorkshire Moors and thence down the coastline, finishing at Filey.

After much thought, I am dedicating the walk to my daughter, Maddy Orford, who died aged eighteen on August 7th, 2017. Maddy contracted Dilated Cardiomyopathy in 2016, possibly as a result of a viral infection, which eventually resulted in two rejected heart transplants at Royal Papworth Hospital.

I am hoping to raise awareness of Cardiomyopathy since, according to a survey carried out by the charity Cardiomyopathy UK in 2022, 53% of people

who responded said that, when they first went to their GP with Cardiomyopathy symptoms, they were diagnosed with a non-heart related condition!

All of a sudden, July 7th is not so far away. So, it’s fingers crossed and if anyone wants to donate, the easiest way is to go to my Just Giving Page: www. justgiving.com/page/philip-orford-cleveland-way.

Thanks to Maddy’s family, friends and Bourne’s schools, and even strangers who perhaps have their own heart-related stories, the fundraising total now stands at £14,786.81.”

Audition for Starring Roles in Bourne’s Pantomime, “Robin Hood”

South Kesteven Acting and Musical Players (SKAMP) are set to perform “Robin Hood” at Bourne Corn Exchange this December, and they are looking for new members to audition for the principal roles. The ultimate pantomime villain, the Sheriff of Nottingham, hatches a wicked plan to get rid of his niece and nephew, Penny and Percy, and claim their fortune. It’s down to Robin Hood to save the day and stop the Sheriff, with a little help from his Merry Men, their Nurse and Maid Marian.

“Robin Hood” director and SKAMP group secretary, Jason Wilson, said, “We’re looking for our Robin Hood, Maid Marian, Sheriff of Nottingham plus lots of merry men. No experience is necessary, just a willingness to get involved and have fun. Rehearsals will be on Friday evenings in Bourne and will start in September.”

Adult auditions take place on Friday July 7th (7.30pm9pm) at Wake House on North Street, and on Sunday July 9th (11am -12.30pm) at Elsea Park Community Centre on Sandown Drive. To book your audition, visit www.ticketsource.co.uk/skamp.
