Welcome to your August issue...
Another summer holiday is here and, sure enough, the rain gods have met to discuss how best they can ruin everyone’s al fresco plans, be it the annual School Sports Day, the Village Fete, the ‘Family Fun Day’ or just that special barbecue.
Oh well, it happens so often that I’m sure we just take it in our stride and think we’re lucky not to be having to endure those 40 degree-plus temperatures the Mediterranean areas are getting right now.
At least the Picnic in the Park and Classic Car Show in Bourne went ahead ‘unscathed’ and a fabulous time was had by all. Big thanks to everyone concerned in making it such a success.
Have yourselves a fabulous holiday and stay safe!

Keeping it short and sweet this month, so no mention of the Ashes, the Women’s World Cup, nor this crazy English summer weather – just a warm welcome … and a little mirth and merriment:
My friend’s boss met him in the car park and said to him, “Have a good day”, so he jumped back in his car and drove home.
I suppose the fact that he’d been dreaming about trains going along in the same direction must confirm that he’s got a one-track mind. Enjoy the read and enjoy August.

NORTH SHOES: Quality Product – Quality Fitting!
Agood shoe-fitting service is particularly important for children and, as North Shoes prepares for the very busy back-to-school summer period, they are encouraging customers to benefit from an appointment booking system. A simple, online process reserves a thirty-minute slot at any of its shops in Bourne, Stamford and Oundle.
Managing Director, James North, explains: “Walkin customers will always be made very welcome, and they can expect our highest level of customer service. But to ensure there is no waiting and to guarantee our trained staff are available to help them, we’re asking people to consider using the online booking system. That way our customers can choose a time most suitable to them and know that they have at least thirty minutes to relax and enjoy a top-quality shoe-fitting service.”
All children’s feet are measured as a starting point, but James insists that what follows next is equally important and is what sets North Shoes apart from high street chains. “We fit all shoes with growing room, not the size they measure. We fit the
correct size, width and style shoe that supports the foot but allows it to grow naturally,” he says.
North Shoes’ school brands are the well-known and trusted Clarks, Start-Rite, Geox and Ricosta. There’s a choice of lace-up, slip-on and Velcro fastening, and there’s a large range of styles for boys and girls, including the popular chunky look. When shoes are fitted properly, primary school children are likely to need one to two pairs per year, while secondary school students should last most of the year with a single pair.
Offer valid until September 4th 2023
“We want them to last and, by coupling up our quality shoe-fitting service with a good, branded shoe, we’re confident that parents and guardians will be happy that it proves value for money,” adds James, who is the fifth generation of the independent family business started in Bourne 147 years ago. All its colleagues are trained members of The Society of Shoe Fitters.
To make a shoe-fitting appointment, just click on the website at www.northshoes.co.uk , which also has hundreds of styles available to order, with free delivery on purchases over £50.
North Shoes’ children’s shoe service is available at 18 North Street, Bourne; 2 Red Lion Street, Stamford and 7 Market Place, Oundle. Its shop at 11 Rose Crescent, Cambridge, stocks adults’ shoes only.
When it comes to shoe fitting, it pays to rely on quality and experience. That is how North Shoes has built a reputation for a level of customer service which has people of all ages returning, year after year.
£10 off trainers when purchased with full-price school shoes.

Carrie Soto is Back
BY TAYLOR JENKINS REIDCarrie Soto is the world’s greatest tennis player, but her determination to win at any cost has not made her popular. Six years after her retirement, she watches a young British tennis player steal her world record, so she decides to come out of retirement, in an attempt to reclaim it.
Even if the sports media says that they never liked the ‘Battle-Axe’. Even if her body doesn’t move as fast as it did. Even if it almost breaks her. Carrie knows she must go back and reclaim her rightful place at the top. And even if it means training with a man who she once almost opened her heart to, Bowe Huntley. Like her, he has something to prove before he gives up the game forever.
A Fenland Garden
BY FRANCIS PRYORThe story of how Francis Pryor created a haven for people, plants, and wildlife in a remote corner of the southern Lincolnshire Fens. Pryor has a very particular relationship with the landscape and soil, thanks to his distinguished career as an archaeologist. It is also about reclaiming a patch of ground for nature and wildlife – of repairing the damage done to a small slice of Fenland landscape by decades of intensive farming. His account of the development of the garden includes fascinating nuggets of Fenland lore and history.
Lottie Brooks’s Totally Disastrous School Trip
BY KATIE KIRBY‘Woe is me. So much is wrong in my life ... Still look like a tomato. Am stuck indoors whilst my friends go bowling without me (rude). My parents are leaving me to go out on a ‘Date Night’. GROSS!’
After a summer of meeting handsome French boys and getting sunburnt, Lottie’s heading off on a week-long residential school trip. A whole week away from embarrassing parents! But the trip soon turns into a total disaster. The other girls staying at the camp are MEGA-MEAN, best friend Jess is spending all her time with new girl Isha, and Lottie’s diary gets stolen!
Bunny vs Monkey: Machine Mayhem
BY JAMIE SMARTGenius inventor, Skunky, has just designed a brand-new creation . . . a robot called Metal Eve! She needs to learn everything there is to know about life, so it’s probably not the best idea that she’s surrounded by Bunny,
Monkey, Weenie, Pig, and the gang.
The only thing she’s going to learn from them is that life in the Woods is very, very silly indeed! Laughs will be aplenty in the hit comic book sensation!
Charity Challenges at Morton CE Primary School
Children and staff took part in a charity fundraising challenge during the Summer Term. To coincide with the ten-year anniversary of our Academy Trust (Lincoln Anglican Academy Trust), a new charity has been created.
“Love As Action Together” (LAAT) is a charitable fund which will support children who are lacking the things they need to access the full life of school. We will remove barriers, promote equality, and champion inclusivity. Funds will be made available directly to our school to help children in our community.
Firstly, our children took part in a ‘10 miles over 10 days’ fundraiser. From our youngest to oldest, children showed commitment to the cause and

had lots of fun along the way. Sponsorship has poured in from generous parents and the final school total stands at £1,400.
The second part of the challenge saw staff from across the twenty Trust schools take part in the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge, (a circular trek, covering 24.5 miles and a total ascent of three peaks totalling 1,585 metres, within twelve hours!) Executive Headteacher, George Trafford, represented the school by taking on this challenge, completing it on June 24th in just over ten hours!
The LAAT fund now stands at over £14,000 which will benefit children and their families in our school and village community. The whole challenge has been a proud moment for our school, pupils, staff, and the wider Trust community.

Village Fair to Celebrate 150 Years
Although children have been educated within the village for far longer, the school was built one hundred and fifty years ago this year, and it seemed only right that this was celebrated in spectacular fashion. Our Parent Staff Association (PSA) has been up-and-running for just over twelve months; they have done a fantastic job since re-forming; and this event was a culmination of all their hard work.
On the day, there were plenty of stalls from local businesses, as well as performances from local dance schools and the school choir – even
Rapunzel popped in to have a sing and a dance with the children. The whole event was a huge success, not only raising money for the school but also bringing the wider community together.
Headteacher, Mr Pasqualino said, “It was a fantastic day, and so nice to see everyone’s hard work pay off. We had past pupils coming by to say hello as well as new pupils who will be starting in September. It was especially lovely to see those not directly linked to the school come in and just enjoy the fun and atmosphere that the community had created.”
The school are currently looking for Governors to join the current Board. If this is something that is of interest to you, please do not hesitate to contact the school to find out more.

What’s available in July...
What’s available in August..
It’s Summertime! We’re happy to see delicious strawberries & raspberries arriving daily; fresh broad beans & peas are available now too. Our chillers are stocked to the brim with plenty of fresh produce, much of which we serve on our Café menu. Why not pick up a BBQ pack from our in-store butchery run by Grasmere Farm & homemade coleslaw & potato salad. Have you tried the locally made Thaymar Dairy ice-cream or a milkshake made with Bassingthorpe milk? On busy days & school days our cabin in the Wildlife Garden will be serving hot & cold drinks, ice-cream & cake. Now stocking bread from our new supplier, Hambletons.
We welcome the return of our sunflowers in August! Always a spectacle & well worth joining a farm tour to view them. We are also really pleased to see Discovery apples & our very own organic sweetcorn back in the Farm Shop - delicious on a BBQ along with a convenient BBQ pack from our in-store butchery run by Grasmere Farm. The lovely weather means outside eating is a must, so enjoy an afternoon tea on the deck overlooking the wildlife garden & pond, or take advantage of our Sunflower Cabin, serving hot & cold drinks, ice-cream & cakes. It’s a good time to give your feeders & feeding station a good clean too!
Marathon Walk Exceeds £2,500 Target
The ‘Wright Care’ Mighty Hikers Walk on May 20th raised an incredible £4,428 for Macmillan Cancer Support. Director and owner of Wright Care, Samantha Davis-Wright, led a team of fearless ladies over the 26.2-mile marathon walk, along part of the North Norfolk coast.
Here are some of her observations:
● It was such a hot day, and we all suffered a bit of heat stroke I think, despite the copious amounts of water we drank! But the feeling when we went over that finish like on the Holkham estate was a feeling like no other!
● Everyone was so proud of completing the hike, despite blisters, torn knee ligaments, and a cut lip, we all did it - albeit with a few tears along the way!
● I’m so grateful to everyone who supported us and donated to such a special cause!
● It was a lovely team-building day, and we had the best time. I’m really proud of my team every day, but there is never any stopping them! They are already talking about what’s next!

The Glebe Singers
Over time, the choir has performed at many local venues - but most recently could be found at St. Guthlac’s Church (Market Deeping) and Peakirk Village Hall, where both concerts were well received by those who went along. The choir has previously been congratulated on the wide variety of different genres it performs, and the audience at both these concerts was treated to a range of pieces varying from a West Side Story medley through to the sacred item ‘Peace I Leave With You’ and many others in between!
The choir is made up of a number of friendly members who share the same passion for singing, and would like to swell their numbers with like-minded people. In particular, they would like to meet tenor or bass singers, but will welcome anyone who is interested in finding out more. Rehearsals are great fun with an element of hard work, but of course to perform those well practised pieces in front of an audience is magical!
The choir can be found rehearsing on Wednesday evenings, 7.30pm – 9pm, during school term time at The Green School (PE6 8DA - opposite St. Guthlac’s Church in Market Deeping). Whether you can read music or not, they would love to meet you. You will be assured of a warm welcome, even if it is just to pop in and experience a rehearsal.

Blooming Bourne Looking its Breathtaking Best!
The East Midlands in Bloom judges were in town on July 13th and were given a tour of Bourne and Dyke. This included a visit to Elsea Park CofE Primary Academy where they met with The Mayor of Bourne, Cllr Brenda Johnson, members of staff and children from the School Council.
The tour continued around Bourne, taking in The Wellhead, Jubilee Meadow, Dimension Skatepark, The Butterfield Centre including the Community Pantry, and finishing in Dyke.
There will be a presentation event in September, where all the results will be announced.
Ladies!!! “Sing for Life” and Support Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice this year
Launching in September, “Sing for Life” will sign up forty-plus local women, just like you, to take part in a ten-week pop-up singing project, working towards a fantastic live performance event at The Cresset on Friday November 10th, supporting charity partner Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice. You’ll learn to sing, meet new people, challenge yourself, perform live on stage AND raise money for this much-loved local charity – what’s not to like?!
Absolutely no previous singing experience is needed, just a willingness to step outside your comfort zone, get stuck in and give it a go! Over one hundred brave women took part in “Sing for Life 2022”, and raised over £10k for the charity, a fantastic total and more than the project has ever raised before!
For most of them, this was their first experience of rehearsing and singing as part of a group, and of performing in public, and here’s what some of them had to say about it:
★ “Absolutely loved every second! Met some amazing people along the way, raised a lot of money for a fabulous charity and I want to do it all again!”
★ “An amazing experience! Lovely to meet new people and take part in such an important project.”
★ “The final concert was an amazing experience, so much fun - the atmosphere was just fabulous!”
Helen Kingston, Community Fundraiser at Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice, says: “Thank you to the Sing for Life team who will bring our community together in perfect harmony to raise vital funds for our hospice. With your support we can continue to provide expert and compassionate care in the local community”.
The project kicks off with introduction sessions at The John Mansfield Campus, Dogsthorpe: PE1 4HX, on Thursday September 7th, (7pm - 10pm), Friday September 8th, (7pm - 10pm) and Saturday September 9th, (2pm - 5pm) when you can meet the team and some of the other women who’ll be taking part. Please call or email first to register and book your timeslot.

Introducing our Brand-New Treatment
Well, we are into the summer months now and, as always, we are on the lookout for new and exciting products that could help our clients change parts of their body or their face that may be concerning them, in order that they are able to feel as confident as possible.
LEMON BOTTLE is a new, advanced fat-dissolving treatment for both the face and body but, after much research, we have decided to focus on using it for the dissolving and contouring of the chin and jawline, as there is no ‘downtime’ at all with this product. Unlike Aqualyx that we have used before for that particular area, there is no swelling afterwards, and it takes a quarter of the time to show any kind of results. You will be able to come in for the treatment and walk out within the hour, with no one knowing what you have had done, while it does its magic and reduces the pockets of fat associated with a double chin and jowls. There is minimal swelling, minimal pain and the treatment begins working immediately. So, as they say……. Chin up !!!!!!!
TREATMENTS WE OFFER
Dermal fillers ✦ Lip fillers ✦ Bunny lines
Downturned corners of mouth ✦ Gummy smiles
Profhilo (turkey neck) ✦ Hayfever Injections

I can't rate Deep-In Aesthetics enough!!!
Alistair and Julie are the best, welcoming, friendly and warm. Knowledge is second to none too, talking through in detail each procedure. I have been for several treatments. Seventy Hyal, Botox, Filler, B12 and most recently Hayfever injection which I can honestly say has changed my life. Wouldn't go anywhere else apart from Alistair and Julie. Thank you to you both.
INTRODUCING...
The dulcet tones of a Mid-West American lady can now be heard in Bourne as Heidi Marshall has recently moved into the town.
Heidi is in the process of establishing a massage therapy clinic at The Old National School building on North Street and is also eager to contribute a monthly feature in ‘Discovering Bourne’, highlighting the range of massage techniques and services that she will be offering to the public.
Heidi was born, raised, and undertook her original massage training in Minnesota, before moving to Southern Illinois, a rural part of the USA, in her late twenties. Over the next thirty years, she has gained a wealth of experience which was augmented with regular ‘immersive training’ and refresher courses, in various parts of the USA, in all aspects of this rapidly evolving profession.
She moved to England after the Covid pandemic, and her recent move into Bourne has enabled her to enjoy much of what this area can offer, be it the many historical connections, the lovely ‘small town friendliness’ or the beauty and serenity of Bourne Woods.
The various types of massage therapy Heidi offers will be explained in more detail in the issues to come, but the following words serve as a brief introduction:
Sports Massage is a combination of deep tissue massage and assisted stretching. It will help the body recover from injury, repetitive use, and trauma. Massage Cupping is similar to VacuTherapy, using glass and plastic cups and gliding them over the skin. It is generally less intense than deep tissue work and is good for scars, adhesions, lymph issues and
Heidi Marshall by John F. Barnes, P.T. (internationally recognizedwhere the client is too sensitive to undertake deep work. MFR or Myofascial Release. Heidi was trained by John F. Barnes, P.T. (internationally recognized physical therapist and the leading authority on Myofascial Release). This type of therapy works with the fascia or connective tissue that runs through the whole body like a web. It uses sustained pressure to help release pain and limited range of motion.
Esalen is bodywork that uses long, smooth, connective strokes to reduce stress, relax, and create greater body awareness for the client. It is usually best as a full body treatment.
Fijian Massage entails the therapist (whilst sitting on a chair or standing next to the client) using their feet on the client who is fully clothed on a mat on the floor. The therapist applies broad, sustained pressure to release tight muscles, and is best for the lower body (glutes, thighs, hamstrings, and calves).
Himalayan Salt Stone Massage uses heated salt stones to manipulate the muscles (similar to Hot Stone Massage). The high mineral content in the stones can help with detoxification and removal of bacteria.
Heidi uses all her thirty years of experience in the profession to provide what she terms her “intuitive massage”, whereby she examines the person and their perceived problem and then offers her suggested way forward. “The session is for you” is her mantra.

Voluntary Community Group Almost a Year Old
Wellbeing are a self-start, non-profit making voluntary community group who heavily subsidise a regular friendship tea to help people re-connect and rebuild their confidence post-Covid.
Rebuilding
In September, they celebrate their first anniversary in serving the Bourne and district community. The first meeting last year was one of three initial taster sessions, which went from strength to strength, providing a much-needed group for people to attend, under no pressure, to regain confidence and social skills in a safe and friendly atmosphere.
Founding member, Patricia French takes up the story:
“I am happy to say that we have enjoyed successful outcomes throughout the year; from the people we work in partnership with, such as social prescribers from local general practitioner surgeries, wellbeing operatives, local care support services and local organisations, to supermarkets, high street shops and businesses, as well as the all the people who attend our group sessions. I would like to clarify that Rebuilding Wellbeing was a single person’s vision, and is not a local organisation, church, national or local company or charity.”
Approximately two hundred people have attended so far, many who have since become regulars. In the early days people came along to find out all about it in order to imitate, open or improve their own group. This is good news for the town and for Rebuilding
Wellbeing who are happy to have helped by sharing their best practice ethos. The group are now in the process of making decisions how to expand into other areas to help kick start other communities into looking after isolated and lone people.
The final words go to Patricia French:
“I would like to thank all who have helped to make our sessions a happy and pleasant place for us to be, and to offer heartfelt thanks to the organisations, local companies, businesses, charities, supermarkets, high street shops, local groups, clubs and media for their interest, sponsorship, and support.”

Sports Performance and Mental Imagery
Imagine that by just thinking about exercise it strengthens your muscles, even if you don’t move an inch. But this is true; mental imagery not only activates the same brain regions as the actual movement but can also speed up the learning of a new skill.
Visualisation or mental imagery is a technique used by sports hypnotherapists and psychologists for years to improve athletic performance in the game. Successful golfers, tennis players, athletes, footballers, boxers, and many others agree that this technique gives them the competitive edge, mental awareness, motivation, and confidence to succeed.
emotional circuits as playing the real instrument.
Visualisation and rehearsal strengthen muscles, so by imagining you’re lifting weights in the gym, you can increase muscle strength by up to half as much as if you’re really doing it. It does this by sending electrical signals to the muscles making them stronger. So, you don’t have to move; it just happens by thinking about it.
We can imagine both internally and externally (third person view) but, by imagining internally, it can also create physiological responses such as changes in blood pressure, heart rate and respiration. It can reinforce the circuits in our brain sending stronger signals to target muscles.
Mental imagery can be used with other things too, such as professional musicians who rehearse difficult parts of a musical piece by performing the music in their mind. It’s thought that mental rehearsal triggers the same motor, somatosensory, auditory, and
Scientists say that mental training with no physical exercise can help improve voluntary muscle strength. This could help with rehabilitation for people who find it difficult or unsafe to participate in strength training; by learning to use their mind they may now be able to strengthen muscles.
Mental imagery is an easy way to help preserve and improve performance alongside physical practice, exercise, or getting out in your sport or specialism. And it is important to keep in mind that, like the real thing, mental training needs to be intensive and repeated, over and over again, to work. Hypnotherapy can help to achieve focus and visualisation to achieve your goals.
Golfer, Jack Nicklaus, once said, “I never hit a shot, not even in practice, without having a very sharp, in-focus picture of it in my head. First, I see the ball where I want it to finish, nice and white and sitting up high on the bright green grass. Then the scene quickly changes, and I see the ball going there; its path, trajectory, and shape, even its behaviour on landing.”

Employment Law: Simple Beginnings to Major Focus
The Employment Tribunal was set up in 1978 and was expected to be a simple, straightforward venue without legal professionals. However, that did not last long, as the more complicated it became, the more likely the legal teams would be called upon by both sides.
At Double and Megson, if you have the need to protect your business, we can assist with drawing up contracts for staff, and we can advise on any issues arising. If you are an employee, we can advise you as to the approach you might wish to take.
It is important to have good relationships, both inside and outside work. Both parties need to know what a ‘grievance’ or ‘disciplinary’ procedure looks like with room for an important appeal structure.
If something goes wrong, when should you enter so-called ‘protected’ or ‘without prejudice’ and ‘subject to contract’ communications with the other party? This might be either under the Employment Rights Act or even when a ‘settlement’
or ‘compromise agreement’ might be possible or advisable.
If a matter ends up in an Employment Tribunal, the matter can become very involved and expensive. Usually, legal costs are not recoverable in an action. Sometimes, an employee’s home insurance may cover their legal costs.
The issue is usually one of “viability”; in other words, both parties do not want to be paying expensive legal costs unless absolutely necessary. There are risks to this type of litigation, however. On many an occasion, a ‘settlement’ works well to keep costs down.
In “disability” cases under the Equality Act, claims can where successful, justify a ‘damages award’ of considerably more than usual.
These cases are complex, and professional advice should always be sought.
In all these scenarios, parties need to be transparent with maximum empathy for each other. Anyone needing help should contact our Bourne office on 01778 423376
Words from the Mayor
Well hello all. We have had some lovely weather and I have been a little busy this month with attending the Picnic in the Park which managed to stay dry until we packed up. The stage was a busy place showcasing some great local talent.
Bourne is full of great people who turned out to enjoy this event and also the Car Show at the Red Hall. We also enjoyed a great evening attending the Rotary Club dinner where we met some very lovely people who are always looking for new members. They are in their hundredth year this year and if you are looking for a good cause to get involved in, they would be really pleased to hear from you.
Another lovely event we attended this month was to reopen the Sugar Mill after their refurb where we joined the ‘Veterans’ Breakfast’. I can recommend their breakfast and we want to thank the veterans for a very enjoyable morning and hope to do it again soon. After the breakfast it was home for
COUNCILLOR BRENDA JOHNSONa quick change to attend the Butterfly Hospice
‘Butterfly Release’ on the Well Head. This was a very moving afternoon and a beautiful setting to release the butterflies.
The Butterfly Hospice is one of my charities this year and I hope to be able to raise a good amount of money to hand over to them to continue their great work. Last year I went to the opening of their therapy rooms behind their hospice and I remember spending a very cold morning there. Before my appointment as Mayor I had arranged a fundraiser for them, which will be held at the Corn Exchange on 30th September at 7.30pm.
It is a Queen tribute band who play all over the country and should be a fantastic night. Tickets for the event will be available from 10th August when I return from holiday. They are £25 per person, there will be a grand raffle so please support this event. More information will be available by calling me on 07875 308837.

Matthew Flinders is Coming Home
by Brynley HeavenOn September 3rd, 1847, “an immense quantity of human remains” was tipped into the streets around Euston Station in London, which was being extended at the time. The Times reported that children were sifting through the debris to find teeth to sell to dentists. An angry meeting of the ‘Anti-Interment in Towns Association’ heard that overcrowded burial grounds in St Pancras were using the works as cover for dumping corpses, to make room for further lucrative burials.
Captain Matthew Flinders died aged forty in 1814 and was buried in St Pancras. Flinders was the first to circumnavigate Australia and compiled the first
accurate outline map of Australia and, in so doing, put to bed the speculations from Aristotle and Ptolemy about the southern continent.
Out of the blue, in January 2019, Flinders’ lost mortal remains were rediscovered, initially authenticated by a coffin plate. The occasion was another extension to Euston Station, this time preparing the groundworks for HS2. There was a certain amount of nervousness and consultation as to what was appropriate. The Australian government has agreed to his reburial in his native Donington, between Bourne and Boston, next year with all due ceremony.
A chance conversation with tourists on the walkway around the battlements of Lincoln Castle reminded me that, for some Australians, these connections are a deeply felt matter of family heritage, of deportations and hardships, or more recently ‘assisted passages’ to domestic service or to be a farm hand. Not just an interesting historical snippet, as we might see it. The “discovery” of Australia rather overlooks the people living there for 60,000 years before Flinders, so burying him in Lincolnshire may be quite convenient as well as being appropriate!
Flinders was schooled in Horbling; his friend and fellow navigator George Bass was from Aswarby between Bourne and Sleaford (for whom the Bass Strait to Tasmania is named); his sponsor was Joseph Banks of Revesby. I can’t begin to explain this cluster, except to say that opportunities in life often crop up by capillary action and the Spanish conquistadores who took over the Americas often came from the less glamorous parts of Extremadura. Put it that way.
David Ashwood brought his diorama of Euston Station to Folkingham this summer. The giant model is set in 1875 when the Sultan of Zanzibar was passing through to meet Prime Minister Disraeli. An eye-level view reveals what the Euston Arch was all about, looking through to the courtyard, very prestigious but hemmed in and hopeless for expansion. The Arch became a “cause celebre” in 1962 when demolition (as opposed to re-siting) of the Arch was authorised by Harold Macmillan. The outcry by John Betjeman still resonates, even today. Many of the stones found their way to … not a million miles from Bourne. They are still here awaiting the call that never seems to come!
“The Price is Right!” Property Market Review
The dominant message right now is ‘Price it correctly at the first listing and properties are selling faster, with more interest out there’.
• Property prices have moderated and, whilst demand remains across the market, sensible and realistic initial pricing impacts significantly on sales’ success.
• Data from Rightmove indicates that properties that experience a price reduction are 10% less likely to go under offer. They are also on the market for
more than double the time before they go SSTC (Sold Subject to Contract).
• After a period in which property prices have risen sharply, sellers can be overly optimistic in their expectations. Experienced and knowledgeable agents will price the property for the current market.
• Latest research by Zoopla indicates that the average reduction on the initial asking price at the point of sale is 3.8%, although more than 40% of recent sellers have accepted offers of 5% or more below.
BY JASON TREADWELL, MANAGING DIRECTORTime for Solar Panels Time for TCL Solar
UK, with many homes across the country now featuring the recognisable panels on their rooftops.
Solar panels, also known as photovoltaics (PV), capture the sun’s energy and convert it into electricity that you can use in your home, so by installing solar panels, you can generate your own renewable electricity.
TCL Solar are a local family-run business specialising in solar PV and battery storage. Consistent 5-star reviews finding their way to TCL Solar’s website over several years bear testimony to the fact that they are a highly successful, reputable company. You will find that TCL go the extra mile to provide you with the very best in terms of customer service, value for money and quality of installation.
So, what are the benefits of installing solar panels?
Sunlight is free, so once you’ve paid for the initial installation, your electricity costs will greatly be reduced, to become one of the most cost-effective forms of energy available.
You will help the environment by ‘reducing your carbon footprint’. Solar electricity is low carbon, renewable energy. A typical home solar PV system could save around one tonne of carbon per year, depending on where you live in the UK.
You get paid for any excess energy sent back to the grid, by way of the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG). This was introduced in March 2019 to provide financial support to small-scale, renewable energy generators for the electricity they export to the grid.
‘Five-Star’ Recommendations from Contented Customers
TCL Solar are understandably proud of the numerous glowing reviews they receive. The following have appeared just within the last few weeks:
“TCL Solar are an absolute pleasure to deal with; everything they promised was delivered on time. If you’re looking for an honest and reliable company, please call Simon or David.”
(Jenny & James.)
“Excellent service throughout the whole process. Knowledgeable and honest providing good information to make an informed decision. Good communication, friendly and courteous
installation team. Very pleased with the installation and service.” (John & Stephanie Williams.)
“We arranged an initial appointment with TCL Solar. I have to say they did not disappoint. Professional and friendly service, first class system, excellent value. Can’t fault them, top class from start to finish. Many thanks to Simon and David.”
(Edwin Howe.)

Burghley Centre Set to Lose Three Favourites
Opening in 1989, Bourne’s Burghley Centre has seen many changes, with both national retailers and local entrepreneurs settling in and then moving out, sometimes remarkably quickly. Over the next few weeks, three shops in the Centre will be closing, as their owners retire.
All three (‘Greetings’ card shop, the tanning salon, ‘Tan 360’, and ‘Two Jays’ discount store) have become firm favourites with their many loyal customers, whilst their combined tenure in the Centre has reached a staggering seventy years!
Deborah Taylor joined ‘Greetings’ as manager in 2000 and three years later bought the business. Having made lots of friends over the years, she now feels it’s time to take life easy, starting with a holiday to Scotland with her partner Tom, who also helps in the shop. She also plans to see more of her daughter
Rachael who lives in Surrey. The last day of trading will be September 9th.
The ‘Tan 360’ salon next door to Greetings closes on September 30th as owner, Kay Sanders calls time on a very successful decade in the Centre. She is to take early retirement for family reasons and, after feeling tied to the business for sixty hours per week for so long, she deserves her request to “get my life back”, thanking her amazing loyal customers along the way.
John and Lorraine Sanders at ‘Two Jays’ will have spent twenty-seven years in the Centre when they take a well-earned retirement at the end of August. They are grateful for the loyalty shown by their customers, many of whom are now the next generation of their family to seek out not just the best prices in town, but also the lively banter of the irrepressible “John and the missus”!

How to Keep Your Home Cool and Energy-Efficient in the Summer
BY COLEEN EVERITT, ALTO ELECTRICAL LIMITEDWith the “al fresco entertainment season” upon us, we wanted to give you some of our favourite tips to help you have the best experience:
Consider Outdoor Heaters:
Entertain in your garden late into the night with a simple addition of an external heater. Much safer than a garden fire, this feature can complement a hot tub nicely, keeping you and your family comfortably warm with ease.
Install Outdoor Lighting:
Outdoor lighting can enhance the ambiance of your outdoor space, making it more inviting for you and your guests. Consider installing energy-efficient LED lights or motion-activated lights to save on energy costs.
Add Outdoor Outlets:
If you enjoy outdoor cooking or entertaining, adding outdoor outlets can be a game-changer. You can power your outdoor appliances, such as a blender or a grill, without having to run extension cords from inside your home.
Install a Sound System:
If you love to entertain, consider installing an outdoor sound system. You can create the perfect atmosphere for your outdoor gatherings by playing your favourite music.
Install a Water Feature:
A water feature can add a tranquil and relaxing element to your outdoor space. Consider installing a fountain or a pond with a waterfall to create a peaceful oasis in your backyard.
In conclusion, outdoor electrical upgrades can make a significant difference in the functionality and ambiance of your summer entertainment space. Whether you’re looking to improve lighting, add outlets, install a ceiling fan, add a sound system, or install a water feature, Alto Electrical can help. How ‘Forwarding’ Can Help in the Fight Against Phishing Fraudsters
By Eileen Le Voi at Safe Local TradesWhen receiving a suspicious email from an unknown number or contact, simply deleting it from your inbox is arguably the easiest option. But, thanks to a recently launched service, forwarding these suspicious and potentially fraudulent links is helping in the fight against the increasing issue of phishing.
The advice from Action Fraud is to forward any suspicious emails to a designated address, without of course clicking on the links or just pressing the delete button. Almost 21 million reports have been made to the Suspicious Email Reporting Service (SERS), which uses the email address report@phishing.gov.uk, resulting in the removal of over 235,000 malicious websites.
07716 678056
SERS was launched by the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) and the City of London Police in April 2020 to enable the public to forward suspicious emails to an automated system that scans them for malicious links.
And in a two-pronged attack, mobile phone providers also offer a service that allows customers to report suspicious text messages, by forwarding them to the number 7726. The service is free of charge and enables providers to take down malicious websites and block malicious texts from being sent across their network. A good idea is to keep this number handy at your workstation.
Practical advice you can follow when it comes to dealing with phishing scams:
1 If you have any doubts about a message, contact the organisation directly. Don’t use the numbers, addresses or links in the message – use the details from the organisation’s official website. Remember, your bank will never ask you to supply personal information via email.
2 If you think an email could be a scam, you can report it by forwarding the email to: report@phishing.gov.uk
3 Always report suspicious text messages or scam call numbers free of charge to 7726. Your provider can find out where the text came from and block or ban the sender.
If you’ve lost money or provided personal information as a result of a phishing scam, notify your bank immediately and report it to Action Fraud at www.actionfraud.police.uk or by calling 0300 123 2040.
You Better Think!
ills have been in the news recently with the court case over Aretha Franklin’s wills being finally settled in the U.S.A. after five years of conflict within her family. She did just about everything wrong; she certainly didn’t show very much Respect to her family. What was going through her mind as she hid her last will? Did she Say a Little Prayer that someone would find it or was she trying to take her family for a Chain of Fools?
A Natural Woman, but an amazing soul singer, Aretha had amassed a fortune of around $18 million. Her original will, made in 2010, saw the estate divided between her four sons; the later 2014 document saw the main part of her estate distributed in the same way, with a gift of a $1 million home to one of her sons and her grandchildren. Both wills were handwritten and were, according to the court, difficult to decipher, meaning her true intentions had to be inferred from the documents. The 2010 will
Wwas under lock and key in her home; the 2014 was found tucked down the side of a sofa!
The court decided that the 2014 will was valid and that was the one that was admitted to probate, despite its unorthodox storage and the way in which it was written. Let’s hope her family were Willing to Forgive.
The lessons here are obvious and the pitfalls can be easily avoided. If you want to avoid years of delay and hundreds of thousands in court costs for your family after you die, you need to Do Right Woman, Do Right Man and make sure your will is professionally drafted and securely stored by a reputable company.

Wills
Why do I need a will?
Wills are important to ensure that your assets pass to those you would like. If you are not married, your partner will not automatically inherit your estate.
If you have children, you can also use a will to nominate guardians to ensure they are looked after if the worst may happen.
Lasting Powers of Attorney
What are they?
Lasting Powers of Attorneys (LPAs) are documents that allow someone that you nominate as your attorney, to deal with your financial or health affairs on your behalf.
These are used when you lose mental capacity but must be created while you can still make decisions. If you do not create these in time, then unfortunately the solution is more costly and time consuming.
Probate
What is it?
When a person sadly passes away, some banks and institutes require a Grant of Probate to enable you to collect in their assets. If you are selling a house, a solicitor will require this to complete the sale.
We are licensed to assist with the probate application on your behalf, as well as distribute the estate, making everything simpler at this difficult time.

WANTED! Public Request for Land
Afterover four decades, the Bourne town public fireworks display can unfortunately no longer take place in its present location, due to the new housing development on Manning Road. As a result, we need to find a new home. It needs to be a large, open space, in excess of three acres with open fields around, with easy access and ideally within walking distance of the town.
We have explored many options and unfortunately it looks like large central areas of town are not possible, ruling out the Wellhead, the Recreation Ground, the Abbey Lawn, Whitebread field and Bourne Academy. We have tried several fields
around town but have had limited success finding a location.
We are so keen to keep the fireworks going and would appreciate anyone coming forward if they are able to offer us land or contact details for people who might be able to support us. The fireworks display provides key income to two local charities, Bourne Round Table and Bourne Abbey Primary Academy, as well as being a much-loved event in our town calendar.
If you can help us keep the fireworks going, please get in touch as soon as possible by emailing ptfabourneabbey@yahoo.co.uk.
Join Up to Walk and Raise Funds for Local Bereavement Support Group
The Cedars Care Home and R J Scholes of Bourne are hosting a Memory Walk to raise funds for Option B, a Bourne-based bereavement group, on Saturday August 12th. Their name comes from the fact that their preferred life (Option A) with their husband, wife or partner has been taken away from them and they have no choice but to go with Option B.
The organisers came together to form a Bereavement Support Group for people in the same position and they meet twice a month. They don’t claim to have all the answers to what is one of the most daunting challenges in life but, between them, they have a variety of approaches and strategies and have found that chatting to other people ‘on the same journey’ can ease the pain and give a sense of direction. Talks, structured activities, and bereavement counselling are hugely beneficial at this stage of life, and this is where we need your help.
The organised walk will take in approximately ten miles of glorious Lincolnshire countryside. The walk will start and finish at the Cedars Nursing Home, stopping at the Five Bells pub in Morton and The Wishing Well pub in Dyke where there will be the opportunity to take on refreshments and listen to guest speakers.
If you want to participate but don’t have the time or the ability to manage approximately ten miles, the walk has been split down into three shorter walks, finishing, or starting at a pub.
To participate, you will need to enrol in The Cedars car park from 9am on August 12th to collect your
map, directions, and an emergency contact phone number. Walkers will leave the Cedars at 10 am, making their way to Bourne Woods and then across the fields to the Five Bells in Morton for 12 noon -12.30 pm (the pub can provide a light lunch if you prebook directly with them from August 1st). The first talk will be at 1 pm. At approximately 1.30 pm, the second part of the walk will take you across the fields to the Wishing Well in Dyke where the second talk will be at 2.30 pm. And so … back to Bourne!
If the weather forecast is not looking good, please call The Cedars on Friday August 11th to check that the walk is going ahead. If the walk has to be cancelled due to bad weather, there is a second date (September 2nd).
To participate, we would ask you to donate £25 per person, and any extra funding from sponsorship would be greatly appreciated.
