Welcome to your December issue...
D
ecember is a time for both reflection on what’s gone and anticipation for what’s round the corner of the new year. We can think about what we’ve achieved in 2023; those places we’ve visited and new people who may have come into our lives; others who we’ll see no more, but whose memory will remain strong. I prefer to look forward, though, and my new year resolutions are already in the planning stage!
As the big day edges nearer, let’s hope that the Christmas lights in your area will bring much-needed cheer in what have sadly been, for many people elsewhere in the world, such traumatic times of late. Let us all hope that peace and reconciliation aren’t too far away in both Ukraine and the Middle East. All the very best to you all for Christmas and for 2024 – good luck, but most importantly, good health!
Claire x
Let me be the first to wish you all good health and happiness for Christmas and the new year. Just in case your crackers haven’t got any cracking jokes in them, try these for sighs! • Those irritating people who use selfie sticks really need to have a good, long look at themselves. • Always borrow money from a pessimist. They’ll never expect to see it again. • I was intrigued by a new restaurant called “Karma” There’s no menu—you just get what you deserve. • Why is Peter Pan always flying? Because he Neverlands. • When you have a bladder infection, urine trouble. Here’s hoping that you can look back on this year with fondness and forward to 2024 with optimism. Enjoy the read!

So, if you love to sing, want some fun and laughter, are looking to make friends and meet new people, be part of a community, and enjoy the benefits that singing in a choir brings to your mental and physical health, pop along to Elsea Park Community Centre on a Thursday evening between 7.30pm and 9pm and be a part of something amazing! JamRoom
16:15 - 16:45 / 17:00 - 17:30
A band that was born out of their bassist Barnie’s love of blues and soul. Sadly, Barnie passed away unexpectedly earlier this year but he would have wanted the music to play on. Laura (vocals) is a teacher during the day who will embrace any excuse to exercise her lungs!
15:15 - 16:00
Bourne Super Choir is made up of children and young people from Bourne schools, both primary and secondary, and supported by all of the local music teachers. The choir is accompanied by students from Bourne Academy and Bourne Grammar School. “We are delighted to be able to support the event which gives us an opportunity to come together as one choir to celebrate the switchon of the Christmas lights. We will be singing a selection of the children’s favourites, and we would love it if the community could join in.” Contact Rebecca Beavis on 07891 114902
Rob (drummer) is king of the cowbell and boss of the unexpected fill during a live performance. Ben (guitarist) has evolved into a spectacular player, and these members of the band have now been playing together for over a decade. Kev (keys) is a much more recent addition, but who has a wealth of experience, having played on the local circuit for many years. The new bassist is Dan who has been a part of other bands that Laura, Rob, Ben and Kev have been involved in over the years. They are looking forward to celebrating the festive season with you all and remembering Barnie, who will be at the heart of JamRoom.

The Christmas Jigsaw Murders BY ALEXANDRA BENEDICT
On December 19th, renowned puzzle setter, and Christmas sceptic Edie O’Sullivan finds a hand-delivered present on her doorstep. Unwrapping it she finds a jigsaw box and, inside, six jigsaw pieces. Fitted together, the pieces show part of a crime scene - bloodspattered, black and white tiles and part of an outlined body. Included is a message: ‘Four, maybe more, people will be dead by midnight on Christmas Eve, unless you can put all the pieces together and stop me.’ It’s signed, Rest In Pieces. Only by fitting all the pieces together will Edie be able to stop a killer - and finally lay her past to rest.

The Christmas Book Club BY SARAH MORGAN
Every year, Erica, Claudia, and Anna reunite for their book club holiday. They’re bonded by years of friendship and a deep love of books, but there is still so much they keep from each other. At the cosy Maple Sugar Inn, Hattie specialises in making her guests’ dreams come true, but this Christmas all she wants is to survive the festive season. Between running the inn and being a single mother, Hattie is close to breaking point. Over the course of an eventful week, Hattie sees that the friends are carrying around unspoken truths, but nothing prepares her for how deeply her story will become entwined in theirs. Will this Christmas be the end of the book club’s story or the start of a whole new chapter?
BY KATHERINE RUNDELL
From Katherine Rundell comes the first novel in a landmark trilogy for age 9+. Christopher is stunned when he discovers a passage to the Archipelago: a cluster of magical islands where all the creatures of myth still live and breed and thrive in their thousands. He meets Mal: a girl from the islands, who is in possession of a flying coat and a baby griffin, and who is being pursued by a killer. They embark on an urgent quest to discover why the creatures are suddenly perishing, voyaging across the Archipelago, where sphinxes hold secrets and centaurs do murder, in a bid to save both the islands and the world beyond them from a rising evil - before it’s too late.

Pantomime to Raise Funds for Don’t Lose Hope ‘Theatre Workshop Fun’ will be staging a community pantomime of “Hansel and Gretel” in February 2024 to raise funds for the mental health charity, Don’t Lose Hope.
Emma Taylor asks: “Do You Want to Help?” “We are still looking for support front of house, registered children’s chaperones, and a few general ‘runners’ for our show nights. If you’re a business, and would like to know more about sponsorship packages, how you can kindly donate a raffle prize, or if you wish to find out how you can purchase a ticket for our raffle in December, please email Em at theatreworkshopfun@gmail.com or fill out a contact form at www.theatreworkshopfun.wixsite.com. Thank you!”
T
his Bourne-based organisation does such vital work providing mental health support within our community, and 100% of the ticket sales will go to them to provide counselling and play therapy sessions, as well as the proceeds of raffles being held at each performance. The show is being produced and directed by Emma Taylor, who runs a children’s theatre group, ‘Theatre Workshop Fun’ in Bourne. She explains, “This is a real community team effort with people coming forward to support the show in so many ways, on stage and off. It is giving the people of Bourne a real sense of belonging and purpose over the coming months. We’ve had users and volunteers of the charity come forward to offer their services, making props in the Don’t Lose Hope Community Shed, and making costumes for us. The Salvation Army have offered to lend us any stage props we need, and other individuals have offered their help and support behind the scenes.”

Bourne
“We have been completely overwhelmed by the generosity of the people of Bourne. We have been very fortunate that local businesses and individuals have come forward to offer sponsorship, raffle prizes and donations and we are holding a big raffle early in December to help us raise the costs required to fund the show. We are so incredibly grateful for all the support we have received so far.” In the show, at the Elsea Park Community Centre, there will be seventeen adult cast members and over twenty children from Theatre Workshop Fun. The pantomime promises fun and songs, dances and cheesy jokes, with audience participation. The performance dates are:

Bourne
Review by Paula Kirtland (Discovering Magazines)
What a performance! From the moment the curtain went up, I couldn’t stop smiling; Professor Higgins, Eliza Doolittle, Col. Hugh Pickering, and the crew bounded onto the stage, and I was transported back to Edwardian London. The stage set, the costumes, hair, and make-up were phenomenally accurate and of course the actors themselves (Professor Higgins with his quintessentially English accent and Eliza with her Cockney twang) made for a truly authentic production. So many well-known songs had the whole audience joining in, with “Wouldn’t it be loverly”, “ With a little bit of luck”, and “I could have danced all night” to name but a few, all sung with such enthusiasm and emotion. The house orchestra were so on point with each song and kept the whole production moving along at a pace. How could they top last year’s “The Sound of Music”? I wondered. Well - you definitely did it, Mr Higgins, as did the whole cast, crew, and the lighting and sound team! A special mention to Martyne Bell as director with her attention to detail throughout.

Bourne Haulier Scoops Top Award
A
Bourne haulage company founder was justifiably proud that his firm had been nominated as a local “Business of the Year” at the 2023 South Holland Business Awards ceremony held at the Springfields Conference and Events Centre in Spalding on November 9th. Imagine the shock when that owner, Adam DavisWright, heard his name called out, in front of three hundred guests, as “Business Person of the Year”, not realising that he had been nominated by his wife and sister! It is only when you consider, however, just how successful the business, DavisWright Haulage Ltd, has become in its three years since being formed, that the award is so well-deserved. Coming out of the “Covid gloom”, Adam and his wife Sanny, took an enormous risk in
establishing a haulage business with just one truck (but accompanied by determination and a willingness to work all hours to make it succeed). Though the company itself was formally established in 2020, the team at Davis-Wright Haulage Ltd have nine years of experience in the haulage industry. In very little time, Davis-Wright Haulage Ltd now has a fleet of six rigid lorries and two ‘artics’. They employ eight drivers, whilst Sanna (besides bringing up their five-year-old twins) and Charlotte Stevens (as Head of Operations) provide the administrative acumen that all successful firms rely upon. Davis-Wright Haulage Ltd offer delivery of various materials for construction projects, including limestone and aggregates, and a comprehensive muck away service from the various construction sites where they operate. These are principally in North Cambridgeshire and South Lincolnshire, especially in the Spalding and Holbeach area at present.

TheLeaf
A Taste of India... (BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT!) There are Indian restaurants and there are ‘Kerala cuisine’, Indian restaurants. Recent recommendations have included the following Since July of this year, Bourne diners have now a wider choice of eateries words of praise: serving Indian food, since The Leaf opened its doors on West Street, to offer “Fantastic food, from the table a captivating offering of something special and something very different. In a listed building which has formerly been used for many functions, including a dental surgery, a registry office and, more recently, Bourne Eau Terrace café, owner and head chef, Ram Kumar, along with his wife/chef, Siji Remesan; manager, Amala Haridas; and other chefs, Thomas and Saurav, are now providing a fascinating menu, updated every three months. The multitude of very favourable reviews on The Leaf’s website and on social media would indicate that Ram’s decision to follow his pre-existing restaurant, “The Leaf”, opened in Grantham in 2019, with this one in Bourne has been a success. Ram modestly explains how his experiences as a chef include training and working in several top London hotels before working as a private chef for Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum, (Prime Minister and Vice President of UAE as well as ruler of Dubai). Ram has also worked with his Highness King Khalid of Saudi Arabia in his London palace.
Kerala cuisine is a culinary style originated in Kerala, a state on the southwestern Malabar Coast of India. It offers a range of both vegetarian and nonvegetarian dishes, prepared using fish, poultry, and red meat with rice as a typical accompaniment. Chillies, curry leaves, coconut, mustard seeds, turmeric, tamarind, asafoetida, and other spices are also used in the preparation. What impressed our party of four the most on our recent visit, was the freshness of the dishes and the light touch of spices, rather than the rich, sauce-heavy fare often associated with other Indian restaurants. Ram and his team take enormous pride in their preparation and presentation of the food. Requests by diners for specific strengths of the spices used and thorough descriptions of the various dishes are encouraged, so that you are receiving exactly what suits you, and served at the table with care and a smile!
snacks right through to desserts (different from a normal Indian). Brilliant service, welcoming and friendly staff. They will go above and beyond to accommodate and help.” “The venue itself is lovely, small and intimate without being too crowded and the service was great, highly attentive and friendly and prices were very reasonable.” “Authentic Keralan dishes. Fantastic food. The chefs are from Kochi in Kerala, so they know what they are doing when offering speciality dishes from the region. Absolutely superb quality food.” “Masala dosa heaven! If you like real Indian food, then eat here. Masala dosa are one of my favourite things to eat, and to find somewhere local that does them was so exciting.” Open Monday-Saturday 4.30pm to 11pm Open Sundays during the festive season

Bourne Leisure Centre Meet the Instructors All the group instructors at the Centre recently took a break from their busy schedules to fill in the following questionnaire. The aim was to give them the opportunity to show their customers that they are, in fact, human, with plenty of reasons why we should grow to like them (despite what they put you through during your classes!)
The following questionnaire was issued: 1. Instructor's Name. 2. Which group exercise classes do you typically instruct? 3. How long have you been an instructor with us? 4. What are some of your personal hobbies or interests outside of fitness and instructing? 5. What is your favourite class or workout format to teach, and why?

Feel Lighter this Christmas!
C
hristmas is usually seen as a ‘magical time of year’; however, for some it can be filled with anxiety, panic and depression, or our addictions can come alive!
This time of year can intensify our worries and feelings of loneliness; trigger painful memories of ones we have lost; and increase our financial worries too. The pressure to have a ‘perfect Christmas’ can make it a stressful event. Research shows that, at any point in the year, one out of seven people suffer with stress and anxiety, and this rises sharply around Christmas.
At the same time, alcohol consumption and food addictions rise too, making it a cocktail for disaster! Hypnotherapy can help you lighten your Christmas by reducing the stress, anxiety and depression created by negative thinking patterns or past events in our lives. It also helps to navigate the triggers surrounding any addiction, allowing you to enjoy this time of year … without going over the top! Hypnotherapy can help you be more relaxed in situations that have previously challenged you, by enabling you to take control and so create a more peaceful Christmas. Be at peace this Christmas time!

Julie and Alistair welcomed me in a warm and friendly manner...
their expertise helped to ensure I understood the treatment, answering any questions before agreeing to carry out the treatment. I knew I was in safe hands and felt relaxed in their professional and friendly presence, throughout the treatment they ensured I was comfortable and explained the procedure. I'd been thinking of having lumi eyes for a few years, I have a pale complexion, and unfortunately inherited thin skin under my eyes creating a dark tiring appearance. Having had my first lumi treatment, within hours I noticed a visible difference, I feel much more confident and have a more fresh healthy look to my face. I love the fact that the treatment is quick, relatively pain free and heals so quickly without any bruising. I'm already looking forward to the results of my next lumi treatment.”

hat’s in a name? Local history enthusiast, Peter Sharpe: “We can only assume that Coggles Causeway in Bourne owes its name to the nature of its surface, paved with ‘coggles’ which were small round stones sometimes used as an alternative to cobbles.” The idea of a causeway across marshy ground makes perfect sense at this location, as it does for comparison at Castle Causeway in Sleaford. We begin at the South Street end, past the Raymond Mays Motorsport memorial on the corner. This modern suburban road lies not on “the fields sleeping underneath” as Gillian Tindall puts it, but on railway yards! Before British Railways sold four acres [“a hitherto unrevealed plan to use the route of the former railway at Coggles Causeway” Lincs Free Press 28/03/1967] this was “a narrow path quite eerie at night”, Janet Faulkner told Bourne History Group. The path was banked up with railway sleepers on one
The other arm of the railway went off to Spalding and Sutton Bridge and can be “felt”, if no longer seen, in Essex Way (the name chosen in 1989) which leads off Coggles Causeway at the barrier to traffic. It still follows, a little further down, the old linear track bed to reach more houses. So, it is both ever-present and completely vanished! Susan Hadfield: “I have memories of walking down; the stream [the Bourne Eau] ran by the tennis courts in the corner of Abbey Lawns, then made its way down Coggles Causeway”. It still does, appearing from behind the back gardens and then going into a culvert these days. The amazing thing was the amount of water. You had a watercourse below the level of the causeway, but also embanked well above the causeway. On the same side was the Mill Pond and holding pond to provide a head of water for Notley’s Mill (1729 – 1973) at the end of the Causeway on Victoria Place. It was an overshot waterwheel (in the jargon), with an 11ft diameter used for grinding corn. You can see the wheel in our picture, taken during the demolition process – a serious bit of kit, by the look of it!
Waterwheel of Notley’s Mill
32
Further down, the railway routes split in two, one arm went to Billingborough and Sleaford crossing over Coggles Causeway on a low bridge. Mary Stevenson told Bourne History Group: “Brian remembers when he was about twelve the low wooden bridge the trains went over. He used to have to lean his bike and duck down to get under it”. Susan Hadfield told the Group: “the bridge was very low, and we played on the dried mud, hiding treasures on the bridge metalwork.”

Happy ‘Legal’ Christmas WORDS FROM RICHARD WOOD
T
he season is upon us, and we think of good times and happy events. The law is perhaps not the first thing on the average Advent Calendar. However, scratch beneath the surface and we see that taking care of one another and good order is very much part of our nation’s history. This is fundamental to the message of Christmas. The law has always tried to care through the statutes our politicians create and the systems that are enacted.
The old Christmas card images are closely related to visions of a world gone by, but which in its own way can still apply today. Although the quill pen and candlelight may be replaced by PC and spotlight, our job still carries forward traditions that go back a very long time. We wish you all a very Happy Christmas. Have fun … like we all intend to do!
Assisting clients to live in a new property or to resolve unhappy differences over a fence or a boundary, or perhaps workmanship is very much part of good order. Resolving unhappy relationships and in a good conciliatory spirit is clearly relevant to good human relationships. Helping loved ones recover from a bereavement is again part of the social service. Knowing and having a solicitor who is local can bring a lot of benefits. You know who to call when something happens. You do not have to Google! Solicitors are just as “normal” as everyone else and every solicitor looks forward to what Santa will bring! It is just that we are trained to understand various systems and protocols and are monitored by a governing body and insured. Clearly, we are entrenched in our modern society.

Happy Families at Christmas
C
hristmas is traditionally a time when family members of all generations spend time in each other’s company to celebrate the festivities. Sadly, there are many incidences of grandparents being excluded from the joy of spending time with their grandchildren, because of a relationship breakdown between the children’s parents. The experience of grandparents being deprived of contact with their grandchildren is often described as “living bereavement” and the pain can be at times so intense that it impacts on the health and wellbeing of those living with this loss. The ‘Grandparents United for Children’ report has recently been issued and campaigners are pushing for an amendment to the Children Act 1989 to give grandparents legal recognition. Grandparents do have the right, if they have had significant involvement in their grandchildren’s lives, to apply for leave to make an application to spend time with their grandchildren, but it is not a special provision that makes the route to court straightforward. Some 250,000 grandparents have never been allowed to see their grandchildren. Over 150,000 grandparents have been warned by the police to stop trying to contact their grandchildren, even by sending birthday cards. This is a matter for the Ministry of Justice who had publicly stated, in 2018, that a change in the law should be considered to establish a presumption that grandparents can see their grandchildren after parents separate. This campaign will continue to apply pressure, but if you require advice as to how to address the problem of grandparents’ contact, consult initially with your local Family Law specialist.

Our school is a nurturing and supportive place with high standards expected of the children within a caring, Christian ethos. The school values partnership with parents, carers, and the community to create a stimulating, learning environment for the children. The adults and children enjoy these exciting sessions. So far this term we have been collecting crab apples, clearing and planting herbs, building dens, enjoying the mud kitchen, and making leaf prints.
We are very fortunate to have a fantastic purposebuilt Forest School on our school site. The children learn and develop an array of skills in a safe and enriching area. Our Nursery children experience this space daily and our Reception children have weekly lessons in our Forest School.

Is Moving Home on Your
Christmas List?
BY JASON TREADWELL, MANAGING DIRECTOR
2023
ESTATE AGENT IN BOURNE
I
f so, we would love to help! With Christmas approaching, many people can be forgiven for thinking that this would be a quiet time to be an estate agent… think again! With the New Year on the horizon, many prospective buyers and sellers are not waiting and are beginning their search and launching their home to the market in December, in order to beat the ‘New Year rush’.
Boxing Day has proven to be extremely popular on the online platforms, such as Rightmove, with record viewing numbers being experienced, year on year. It has been reported that Boxing Day is one of, if not the busiest day of the
year for viewing numbers, therefore what better time to have your home online? Here at Newton Fallowell, we are discreetly marketing numerous homes prior to Christmas, launching to the market over the festive period. This allows us to show our proactivity with our database of buyers and arrange viewings, whilst beating the influx of properties coming to the market in the New Year, who will miss out on the active Christmas period. 2023 has been a changeable, yet busy, year for the property market and we hope to continue to aid our clients throughout 2024. Please let us know if we can be of any assistance with your property move by calling your local team on 01778 422567.

Following the grant of £4,000 from Allison Homes in October, all the laptops have now been upgraded, thus enhancing the group’s IT capability. Also plans for a Jobs Fair in March next year are progressing. New volunteer Sue, who has considerable experience of sales and recruitment, brings valuable expertise to the volunteer team. The final meeting this year, when attendees both current and previous will be invited to join the volunteers and some of the trustees to enjoy some ‘nibbles’, will be on December 18th. Online Bargains and How to Avoid the Social Media Scammers Beautiful | Contemporary | Timeless
By Eileen Le Voi at Safe Local Trades Buying online has never been easier and one of the most popular sites is Facebook Marketplace. But, sadly, the more popular the methods of buying and selling, the more appealing to the scammers. With the Christmas shopping season here, many of us are looking for a bargain – but how do you know if your seller is genuine? Here are some tips: • Don’t feel pressured into a quick sale. Look for local items so you can check them – and meet the seller – before you pay.

• Fraudsters may want to pay by bank transfer. Never pay by bank transfer. Pay by debit or credit card to protect your money. • Even though a seller may be recommended, having good reviews and followers doesn’t make them genuine. Meet them in person and a genuine seller will let you pay in a way that protects your money. • Fraudsters are very careful to take the time and effort to set up a fake sale – even for low value items. They may try and tempt buyers with items that are sold out or rare. It is better to pay a little more to a genuine seller than to lose your money. • If you are thinking about buying from a website or company you are unfamiliar with, visit a review site like Trustpilot and look at the experiences of other consumers. Your Garden
T
here are still plenty of things to keep you busy this month such as winter digging which can help to expose hibernating grubs which the birds can then eat, meaning less pests in the summer! Then cover the plot to prevent weed growth and minerals being leached out by rain. It also keeps the soil warm, which helps with early planting in the spring. Winter crops to harvest include leeks, Brussels, winter cabbage, kale, and winter potatoes. Leeks, parsnips, swede, and celeriac may benefit from a covering of straw to give them some protection. Other root crops are best lifted before the ground freezes. If the weather is too wet and cold to go outside, there are alternatives. You could clean tools, seed trays, pots, and other equipment as it will help prevent any diseases carrying over to infect next year’s seedlings. Also give the shed a good tidy out and clean. Weather permitting, there are plenty of other jobs to do this month: • Continue topping up compost and leaf mould bins, making sure that you burn or discard any plant material that looks diseased. It is a good idea to cover the heap (old carpet is ideal, as this stops the rain leaching out the minerals and keeps the compost warmer). • You can still plant garlic if the soil is not frozen. If you have heavy soil that holds water, dib a hole and put in about an inch
of sand and plant the bulb on top, filling in with fine compost. This will help with drainage, as garlic does not like to sit in water. • Onion seeds can be sown in trays or pots in a gentle heat towards the end of the year. • Manure the vegetable plot, using well-rotted manure – no need to dig it in. • Earth up Brussels sprout stems to keep them secure from strong winds and remove any brown or yellow leaves; this will prevent the spread of grey mould and downy mildew. • Make sure your winter brassicas are netted to prevent pigeons eating them and check for and repair any holes. • It’s not too late to lift and divide large clumps of rhubarb, replanting the outer sections into soil enriched with well-rotted manure. Alternatively, select a large clump to force for an early crop next spring. • If the ground is not frozen, you can still plant bare-rooted fruit trees and bushes. • December is the ideal time to winter prune apples and pears, gooseberries, and currants. Autumn raspberries can be pruned right back to ground level between now and February. • Spray fruit trees and bushes with a winter wash to help control pests – any overwintering eggs should be destroyed. • Replace any worn ties, stakes and wires on your fruit trees and bushes. Tighten any that are too loose and make sure that others are not too tight.
I hope you all have a happy Christmas and here’s to a productive and ‘fruitful’ New Year!

All I Want for Christmas is Peace on Earth and Goodwill to All

know it is a massive cliché, but now more than ever it feels like an important wish. But as I grow older, Christmas gets less about the material things, no more massive piles of presents for the children, but more about the people who are close.
I know I am fortunate, but I simply don’t need any more stuff (although the inevitable pack of socks from my mum will come in handy!) but I do need to know that my children are safe and secure and that I have all my bases covered. That’s why I am going to encourage you to take a

few moments to reflect over the festive season on what would give you real peace of mind. And, of course, I am going to encourage you to write or update your will because that’s where you will give the most important gifts you will ever give. With Christmas just around the corner, it is important to remember that the gifts you’re creating within your will are not only for Christmas but for a lifetime. They’re a testament to your love and thoughtfulness that will keep giving long after the holiday season. So, this Christmas, give yourself the greatest gift of all – Peace of Mind.

Wills
Why do I need a will?
Wills are important to ensure that your assets pass to those you would like. If you are not married, your partner will not automatically inherit your estate. If you have children, you can also use a will to nominate guardians to ensure they are looked after if the worst may happen.
Lasting Powers of Attorney
Probate What is it?
What are they?
When a person sadly passes away, some banks and institutes require a Grant of Probate to enable you to collect in their assets. If you are selling a house, a solicitor will require this to complete the sale.
These are used when you lose mental capacity but must be created while you can still make decisions. If you do not create these in time, then unfortunately the solution is more costly and time consuming.
We are licensed to assist with the probate application on your behalf, as well as distribute the estate, making everything simpler at this difficult time.
Lasting Powers of Attorneys (LPAs) are documents that allow someone that you nominate as your attorney, to deal with your financial or health affairs on your behalf.

Rosedale’s Giant Advent Calendar Prize Draw is here!
Fast becoming a regular feature of Bourne’s pre-Christmas fun and games is the fabulous prize draw, instigated three years ago by the zany “crew” that usually spend their days selling homes from their Rosedale office on the town’s North Street. From December 1st, the Rosedale windows will replicate an enormous Advent calendar, each separate ‘window’ with a date and the name of a local business, eager to participate in the scheme, by offering the lucky winner their individual present. In the past, these have included beautiful floral arrangements, Christmas hampers and any number of vouchers to be redeemed within the town. Each day, the participating business is visited by the “crew” who will perform, and be filmed doing, something outlandish and very “un-estate-agently”, and a draw will be made. Entry is open to everyone and involves the following: On the ‘Rosedale Property Agents Bourne’ Facebook page, like our page, share the promotional video post, and then tag a friend in the comments. Both you and the friend will be entered, and the draw will run until Christmas Eve. The “crew” (a.k.a. Catherine Brown, Steph Stubbs, Paul Graham, Ewan Drew, Rachel Riley, Kelly Russell, and Becky, the decorated dog) all see it as a great opportunity to showcase the town’s many and varied businesses, to encourage us all to “shop local”, and to help engender a wonderful pre-Christmas spirit in the town.

Matters Christmas Magic at Peterborough Cathedral
C
hristmas is coming, and what better way to start the festivities than with “Christmas Magic”? The city’s favourite Christmas celebration returns to Peterborough Cathedral on Saturday December 16th, having delighted audiences from across the city and beyond for over a decade. Expect to hear stunning arrangements of classics like Away in a Manger and Silent Night, as well as festive favourites like Winter Wonderland, Santa Baby and many more, all performed against the glorious backdrop of Peterborough Cathedral.
Featuring performances from Peterborough Male Voice Choir, Peterborough Voices, and Peterborough Community Chorus with Peterborough Festival Brass, there will be a 2.30pm matinee for the whole family to enjoy, as well as an evening performance at 7.30pm. With something for everyone, young and old, “Christmas Magic” is guaranteed to put you in the Christmas spirit, so bring the children and the grandparents too!
Over one thousand people from across the city and beyond came to see last year’s performances, with comments including: “Enjoyed every minute! Thank you one and all!” and “Absolutely amazing performances from such talented people!” Tickets are available at www.peterboroughsings. org.uk or by phone on 0333 666 3366 (fees apply). BOOK NOW!
Rotors and Wings Lunch Raises £75,000 for Lincs and Notts Air Ambulance The Lincolnshire Air Ambulance County Appeal (LAACA) Lunch and Auction of Pledges has raised over £75,000 for the Lincs and Notts Air Ambulance (LNAA). A dazzling flypast by a Spitfire and Mustang from The Rolls-Royce Heritage Flight accompanied by the sound of the RAF Waddington Pipes and Drums started the proceedings at this prestigious event held at the Lincolnshire Showground. Four hundred guests attended and heard speeches and entertainment before a whole array of oncein-a lifetime adventures and experiences was auctioned. LNAA’s CEO, Karen Jobling explained, “This year we need to raise £10million to operate twenty-four D E CE MB E R 2023
hours a day, seven days a week. We receive no direct funding from the Government; instead, we rely on the wonderful generosity of individuals and groups like the LAACA committee to help fund our work and enable us to continue to be by the side of patients, day and night.” LAACA Chair Andrew Pearce added, “With each mission now costing around £4,000 and with an average of four emergency call outs every day, every penny raised really counts. And once all the pledges are received, we expect the final amount to reach in excess of £88,000.” There is still time to make a donation to the Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance – just visit their website at www.ambucopter.org.uk/make-a-donation.

Local History
Early Motor Bus Memories
I
KINDLY SUPPLIED BY DEEPINGS HERITAGE
n the early 1900s a journey from Deeping to Peterborough involved walking three miles to a railway station, or hiring a horse-drawn vehicle to get there, and catching a train. There were no bus services on that route until the 1920s. William Smith of Bourne replaced a horse-drawn bus, which he used to take people to nearby markets, with a motor vehicle in 1919. He began a daily service to Peterborough four years later, and round the same time, Edwin Shaw set up his motor bus business in Maxey, and the Hare family’s “Primrose” buses operated from Market Deeping. The earliest vehicles had solid rubber tyres and were licensed to carry only fourteen people. There were no timetables, so passengers waited by the roadside to catch whichever company’s bus turned up first. There was fierce competition between proprietors on the Peterborough route, resulting in drivers racing each other to poach customers and beat their competitors’ arrival times. There was also a temptation to exceed the permitted number of passengers. Police regularly checked buses for overloading. In 1925 Frank Hare was summoned for carrying forty-two people in a vehicle licensed for twenty, and when another bus

was stopped at Northorpe in 1929, ten passengers were counted standing in the gangway with a further thirty-six seated, when there should have been no more than thirty-two. The driver’s excuse was that it was a wet night… With so many people crowded onboard, the atmosphere must have been rather fuggy, especially as most people smoked cigarettes. Fortunately, the roads in this district are flat so that early buses with limited horsepower could cope with their load. One local man recalled an outing to Leicester, when passengers were obliged to get out and help to push their bus up Wardley hill. London buses had open tops in the 1930s and a Deeping man described his first experience of them as hairraising. Riding through streets full of traffic, he could almost touch people on other buses passing by. As rival companies fought for business on the route between Bourne and Peterborough, villagers benefited from cut price fares, and the cost of a ticket from Deeping to the city dropped as low as sixpence. The Transport Act of 1930 brought some regulation after a decade of chaotic competition. Mr Smith’s company, trading as Delaine became the sole operator through Deeping to Peterborough, and a hundred years later they are still serving that route. The Hare family’s transport venture was short-lived and they concentrated on their joinery business, while Shaw’s of Maxey have celebrated a centenary of coach travel, nowadays mainly for holidays and day trips.
