Welcome to your January issue...

A

t the time of writing, we’re still very much wrapped up in 2023 and the final throes of the year, with its Christmas parties, Santa being chauffeured around our streets, the carols, and all the endof-term concerts, all of which make it such a fabulous time of the year.

Part of the excitement has already come to the good folk of Bourne and district when the ‘Magical Christmas Fayre and Lights Switchon’ day on December 2nd brought literally hundreds of people out onto the streets of the town. It was so heart-warming to witness such fantastic community involvement and so many families braving subzero conditions. A huge well-done to all the performers and a massive thank you to everyone who helped make the day such a success. All the very best to you all for the year ahead and may it bring peace, good health, and happiness. At this time, the special thoughts of all our family go out to our dear mother who passed away a year ago. Where did 2023 go?!

Claire x

Already with the ‘family organizer’ in place on the kitchen wall, we race through to 2024, looking forwards, with anticipation and much hope, and that’s not just for ‘loadsa’ medals at the Paris Olympics which begin on July 26th. For those of us fortunate enough to have had him as an inspirational History teacher and Deputy Head at Bourne Grammar School (long, long ago), it was sad to hear of Doug Birkbeck’s passing in October … just two months away from his 102nd birthday! And finally: • How sad to have seen that demonstration of turkeys on Christmas Eve, holding up placards which read: “Just Stop Foil!” • A recent study has found that women who carry a little extra weight live longer than the men who mention it. Enjoy the read and may your resolutions last well past the second week of January!

The Woman on the Ledge

BY RUTH MANCINI

A woman falls to her death from a London bank’s twenty-fifth-floor roof terrace. You’re arrested for her murder. You tell the police that you only met the victim the previous night at your office party. She was threatening to jump from the roof, but you talked her down. You’ve got nothing to do with this tragedy. You’re clearly being framed. So, why do the police keep picking holes in your story? Even your lawyer doesn’t seem to believe you. It soon becomes obvious that you’re keeping secrets. But who are you trying to protect? And why?

Legal Corner

Taking Care in 2024 WORDS FROM RICHARD WOOD

W

A Happy New Year from Double and Megson hilst not exactly time for the ‘spring clean’ (the tree having just being put away) it is always timely to take care.

Having a local accessible solicitor to manage your house move is extremely helpful to avoid misunderstandings. Having a local solicitor draw up your will ensures clarity and, as we are regulated, we are covered by an ombudsman scheme and insurance. A man selling their wares on the street may not. What do we do about estrangement in wills, and can it be fixed? Do you need protection so that your wishes are fulfilled? Are we concerned about whether Inheritance Tax might be payable and what allowances and exemptions might apply? Having a solicitor who believes in empathy and conciliatory communications may well avoid some unpleasantness in disputes, especially in the breakdown of relationships.

Understanding the difference between being married and not in law can save significant heartache and problems later on. This is crucial in Property and Pension Law. There is no such thing as a common law husband or wife. What should we do if there are disputes to be resolved about children? What should we do if we have any other dispute? It could be about a large consumer purchase for instance. A ‘down to earth’ approach from people who work in our office can be a real benefit especially when there is stress. Our local links to other services really can help. Our solicitors and fee earners understand how different legal subjects relate to one another as they do not just focus on one subject. The firm has been present in the town since 1978 and have at times acted for three generations of the same family in those forty-five years.

A school where pupils and adults flourish…

T

his term we received our SIAMS (Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools) report. This is an inspection that church schools undergo where they can show their school to an inspector, explaining how we help children be the best that they can be. Many aspects of the school are looked at and we were very proud to receive the concluding report. It was great that the school’s inclusive nature was recognised with all children treated with equity and all adults striving to help children achieve ambitious targets and goals. Over the last few years, we have worked hard to build a community where everyone is welcomed and supported, using St. Gilbert as a shining example of this.

Edenham CE

At Edenham, our vision is focused around three goals – a love of learning, a love of our community and being prepared for the future. It was an absolute pleasure being able to share how we do this and the impact of it with all those involved in our school. A fine example of children flourishing was our Christmas Concert. It is always a wonderful show, where children who have been learning instruments throughout the year come together to form a band and perform Christmas hits for our parents – it never ceases to amaze me how remarkable they all are! If you want to see what we get up to, or support us in any way, please do not hesitate to contact us on 01778 591207 or via email enquiries@ edenham.laat.co.uk.

It’s That Time of the Year Again!

E

very year, millions of people make New Year’s resolutions, in the hope that there may well follow certain changes in their behaviour or in their established lifestyles and routines. Every year, the recurring themes include a clutch of “favourites” such as taking a more active approach to health and fitness; adopting a different approach to handling their finances; and learning new things for personal and professional development. When making resolutions, or goal setting, you’re making a promise to yourself and your dreams. It’s all about being accountable and taking ownership of your actions. With goals in place,

you can then create a structure that keeps you on track and motivated. Deadlines and milestones which you set at this time are invaluable, reminding you to stay focused and disciplined. By sticking to your plan and putting in the effort, day after day, you develop habits that pave the way for your growth and success, whether it’s in your career or personal life. It is highly likely that several of the top twenty most common resolutions will look familiar to you, and some of them may have even lasted until February 1st!

✦ Take more exercise.

✦ Eat a healthier diet.

✦ Lose weight.

✦ Improve your powers of concentration.

✦ Get organised and be tidier.

✦ Get out more and meet new people.

✦ Learn a new skill, language, or hobby.

✦ Be more polite and improve your manners.

✦ Live life “to the max”.

✦ Get more quality sleep.

✦ Save more money/spend less money.

✦ Volunteer and give (more) to charity.

✦ Quit smoking and/or consume less alcohol.

✦ Let go of grudges – life’s too short!

✦ Spend more time with family and friends.

✦ Adopt a pet.

✦ Travel more.

✦ Stop being late for everything.

✦ Learn to control your emotions.

The last and most important point to consider is that all the positive changes you want to make must be permanent. You will need to work on sticking with the good habits you have adopted until they just become a natural part of who you are.

Step Into the New Year With Confidence

W

hen we feel confident, we gain a sense of strength which gives us an unstoppable ability to achieve how we want to be and to overcome life’s challenges to succeed. Confidence is an internal force which enables us to execute our strengths and abilities. Lack of confidence can result from low selfesteem, anxiety or panic, past experiences, fears of how others see us, or just the fear of the unknown which holds us back from living our life to its full potential. When we are confident, it gives confidence to others around us and creates good first impressions, putting others at ease. Other ways in which confidence can help us in life are : believing in ourselves; finding it easier to take action; having more motivation; feeling less anxious and fearful; dealing with pressure more easily; overcoming obstacles; making decisions quicker; and making the most of opportunities when they arise. Sometimes, we can be confident in one area of our lives yet not in others. However, the good news is that we can improve our confidence over time with the help of Solution Focused Hypnotherapy.

Boost your confidence in 2024! If you would like to book an appointment or find out more about hypnotherapy, contact Christine on: 0780 9690 964 or contact@beardwoodhypnotherapy.co.uk

Local History

In Search of Hereward the Wake

O by Brynley Heaven

n quiet back roads south of Bourne, the small village of Wilsthorpe boasts a neat Georgian church, strikingly unusual in these parts. Inside lies a knight in chainmail, with feet resting on his dog, apparently much older than the church, and he bears the arms of the Wake dynasty. He is believed to be 13th century in origin, (or intended to be from this period) so a Wake, but perhaps not the Wake. As a mixture of historical fact and romantic embellishment, where better to start the hunt for Hereward? Most of our earliest English heroes are sketchy on verifiable historical fact. Hereward was “the last Englishman” holding out against the Norman conquest, just as Boudicca held out against the Romans and – even more sketchy – King Arthur held out against the Anglo-Saxons, and Robin Hood stood for the dispossessed. This vagueness has advantages. The gaps in the historical record can be plugged with heroic deeds and rattling good stories. Much of what we think we know about Hereward was written in Edenham Vicarage, down the road, by Charles Kingsley in 1866. Kingsley is credited with transforming Hereward from a dashing regional guerrilla leader into a national icon. According to David Roffe (1994), who has done some pukka research into Hereward’s supposed birth and burial in Bourne: “From at least the early 12th century Hereward’s romantic deeds were celebrated in Anglo-Norman aristocratic circles”. These folk with Flemish, Norman, and Breton roots were happy to appropriate (as we now put it) the prestige of their outlaw indigenous opponent and to claim him as an ancestor, whether that was strictly true or not. The 13th century rebel baron, Baldwin Wake, from the De Wake family of Bourne, liked the idea of descending from Hereward and that I suppose is what matters. The moral of this story is to treat all historical

14

Bourne

evidence with respect, but to beware of earlier tampering. St Faith of Aquitaine, Wilsthorpe, may be a distinctive Georgian church, but it has some medieval-style windows inserted in Victorian times as well as genuinely original barley sugar twist altar rails. Even our medieval knight in chainmail may have been re-badged at some point; who knows? Nikolaus Pevsner, who probably paid one fleeting visit, is pointlessly rude about him. If you do pay him a visit in Wilsthorpe, be sure to see also the poignant wall memorial to Driver Thomas Dennis of the Persian Gulf Expeditionary Force, who died in Basra on June 11th, 1916, then known as Mesopotamia and now as Iraq. His death would be right after the Siege of Kut, described by the historian, Jan Morris as “the most abject capitulation in Britain’s military history”.

Prestigious Award for Local Home Care Provider

F

The past eight years have seen the small, independent home care company, Wright Care at Home, become established in South Lincolnshire ounder and owner, Sammy DavisWright has been the driving force behind the company’s growing reputation for excellence in the field of social care provision. It was wonderful, then that Sammy was able to receive a welldeserved award on November 24th, on behalf of her hardworking, friendly team of carers.

At “The Great British Care Awards” ceremony in Nottingham, Wright Care at Home had been nominated and then shortlisted as finalists in two categories, competing with providers from the whole of the East Midlands. Donna Youngs was chosen as a finalist in the “Home Carer 2023: East Midlands” category, a remarkable achievement in a 400-strong field of carers. The icing on the cake, however, came when Sammy stepped up to receive the “Home Care Employer Award 2023: East Midlands”, which automatically gives Wright Care at Home entry into the nationals in Birmingham in March 2024. The Great British Care Awards are a series of regional events throughout

the UK to celebrate excellence across the care sector; the purpose of the awards is to pay tribute to those individuals who have demonstrated outstanding excellence within their field of work. A delighted Sammy commented, “Winning this award was such an achievement; never did I anticipate that we would win! Such an accolade for our team. This award is such a personal and team achievement. To see a smaller, independent, provider in the area win this award was a huge testament to the work we all do on the frontline and behind the scenes. It was an honour to bring this award home for our team and show them all just how amazing they are, 365 days a year in supporting our community. It gives us even more motivation to keep going and strive further in providing the Stamford and Bourne area with services, above and beyond.” The judges’ comments included the following: “Samantha is the driving force; her unwavering values and fervour for providing the right support in people’s homes radiate. Despite being a small company, her immense heart sets her apart. Keep forging ahead, Samantha; the social care realm thrives with individuals like you!” Have you ever considered a career in the home care sector? If so, why not look to Wright Care at Home for more information; please visit www.wrightcareathome.co.uk.

Radfield Home Care’s Tips for Maintaining Relationships Through Dementia Stigma and misunderstanding can cause many people living with dementia to experience loneliness and social exclusion. Here, are some tips on how to maintain positive relationships.

1

Keep creating experiences When you have a great time out with a loved one living with dementia, it can be disheartening if they immediately forget about it. But, although they might not remember the day out, it’s likely that they will remember the feelings of happiness and love they experienced. Your visits are important and do make a difference!

2

Focus on emotions People with dementia can get easily confused, which often leads to anxiety and frustration. If your loved one has misremembered a situation, rather than correcting them, focus on the emotions they’re demonstrating and react according to these.

J ANUA RY 2024

3

Talk about the good old days! People living with dementia often have impaired short-term memory, with a better level of long-term memory. Try asking them questions about themselves when they were younger or about specific events in their past. It’s a great way to get the conversation flowing and to spark feelings of comfort and happiness. Radfield Home Care supports its clients to live independently at home with a wide range of support, from companionship, housework and shopping to personal care and more specialist assistance for conditions such as dementia and Parkinson’s.

Here, at Deep-in Aesthetics we are offering our clients, old and new, a helping hand to get in shape and lose some weight going into the new year. We have been using two different types of fat dissolving treatments at the clinic that allow you to diet and exercise alongside your sessions, to help speed up the fat-reduction process.

Firstly, there is the original, called Aqualyx, which is a series of fat dissolving injections that can be used anywhere on the body where you can pinch more than 2cm such as the tummy, back, chin, thighs, and arms. They are used to treat and kill pockets of fat cells that collect beneath the surface of the skin. It is the most effective and safest fat dissolving treatment available and can get rid of stubborn areas of fat while contouring at the same time, so you haven’t got any unsightly loose skin left over afterwards. There is also no downtime afterwards and minimal bruising, if at all. The second treatment is called “Lemon Bottle” and is a revolutionary new fat dissolving treatment. It has proven to be extremely effective for smaller areas,

such as the chin, arm, back, and the jowl area (which also contours the jawline afterwards to give a more slimline facial aesthetic). REET This treatment has minimal swelling, no D I S CA T I O N C LO downtime and begins working immediately which is one of its main plus points if you have a particular event coming up and PR IVAT E PA RK IN G you need a rapid result. We look forward to starting the new year with you and let’s see what changes 2024 can bring…….

What Keeps You Awake at Night?

Advice From NICK ASH, Managing Director W&P Legal

It’s no breaking news that being an adult, with responsibilities and difficult decisions to make on a regular basis, is enough to keep us awake at night.

O

n a dreary Sunday afternoon in November, I sat catching up with an old friend. I asked how he was and his reply “I’m okay” had me a little unconvinced. “Just okay?” I asked him, growing slightly concerned and hoping I could relieve some burden he may be carrying. My friend then explained to me that recently he’d been struggling to sleep at night, tossing and turning unable to escape his worries. We talked more about his worries and dissected how we could resolve them, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that I’d heard these worries before from other friends. I will put this question to you, reader, and I will put money on it that you have once tossed and turned over the same questions...

1

What would happen to my family if I weren’t here tomorrow?

3

How can I make sure my children and grandchildren were still taken care of if something were to happen to me?

4

How can I control what happens to my assets?

I reassured my friend that I had once been kept awake by the very same thoughts and unfortunately, the future is something that we cannot control. However, we can prepare for it. This may be a worry that always burdens us, but we can take action to alleviate some of the stress. If these thoughts sound familiar and you’d like support in taking action, let me help you. My colleagues at W&P Legal and I are committed to delivering peace of mind and are waiting with open arms. It is also important for me to point out that there are many resources out there to support you if you’re feeling particularly stressed, concerned, or you’re worried about your mental health. We will support you with the practicalities of alleviating these worries, but don’t be afraid to speak out if your concern stretches beyond these. You can reach us on 01778 252301 or advice@wplegal.co.uk.

2

What if I became sick or injured and was unable to work or provide?

Wishing you a wonderful New Year!

Recipe

Sweet Potato SOUP

A big bowl of warm, winter comfort; this hearty soup can also be frozen for future meals.

Method Ingredients 1 tbsp olive oil

1 onion, roughly chopped 2 large carrots, peeled and roughly chopped 4cm fresh root ginger, finely chopped 1 garlic clove, crushed ½ tsp dried red chilli flakes 700g sweet potatoes, peeled and cubed 2 pints vegetable stock Salt and freshly ground black pepper

8 28

D I S C O V E R I N G Whittlesea Bourne

1 Heat the oil in a large, lidded saucepan over a medium-high heat. Add the onion and carrots and cook until softened. Stir in the ginger, garlic and chilli flakes and fry for 2 to 3 minutes, or until fragrant. 2 Stir in the sweet potatoes and stock. Turn up the heat and bring the pan to the boil. Reduce the heat to low and simmer with the lid on for 15 minutes, or until the sweet potato is tender. 3 Remove the pan from the heat and blend the soup, using a stick blender, until smooth. Alternatively, tip it into a food processor and blend. Season to taste and serve. For garnishes, try drizzling a little coconut milk or cream into each bowl, or sprinkle over some freshly chopped coriander, or fry up a pinch of cumin seeds and chilli flakes in a little oil and swirl into the soup.

Property News

New Year,

New Agent?

W

ith the Christmas period over and a new year begun, focus has returned to the property market for those considering moving. With many new buyers registering their requirements and a flurry of new properties coming to the market, Christmas can no longer be used as an excuse for a lack of interest. Despite Christmas, Newton Fallowell had an extremely busy and successful December, which is being carried through into January. Many properties were sold, including a few within days of advertising, and a couple that required no advertising at all! We found that buyers were in fact registering their details prior to the new year, to ensure they were the first to hear about any new properties due to come to the market. This included our Boxing Day launch, which provided tremendous results. We launched a variety of homes to the market, where they benefited from fantastic online exposure prior to the new year. Whilst the new year presents the benefit of many new buyers, it also presents a much higher level of competition on the market. Therefore, it is imperative to ensure that your home stands out, or you could risk becoming ‘stale’ on the market. Buyers, new and old, will maintain the ability to see the date your home was launched to the market. If

BY JASON TREADWELL, MANAGING DIRECTOR

your home had already been on the market for a period in 2023, they may begin to ask the question of ‘Why has this home not already sold?’ Here at Newton Fallowell, we believe it is important to 2023 review a home’s marketing and interest regularly, to ensure it does not become ‘stale’. We recommend that, if your ESTATE AGENT home has not been receiving IN BOURNE a good level of interest, you understand why this is and what your selling agent is doing to increase activity. Are they being pro-active and cross-selling from similar homes they have available? What are the reasons potential purchasers are providing for not viewing your home? If you cannot answer the above questions, perhaps a change in selling agent could be worthwhile. With a combination of a new set of photos/marketing details, as well as a pro-active agent who will provide you with answers to the above questions, you will benefit from one of the most important periods of the year for the property market. If you believe your home needs a fresh lease of life, then please do not hesitate to contact us on 01778 422567, so that we can provide this for you and help get you moving.

Your Garden

J

anuary is a really good time for planning, so how about planning a three- or five-year crop rotation?

The three-year crop rotation involves the following: Year 1: Peas, beans, and fruiting vegetables: peas and beans absorb nitrogen from the air and store it in the roots; leaving the roots in after harvesting benefits next year’s crop. Year 2: Brassicas: these are nitrogen-hungry, so grow them where last year’s peas and beans grew. They are also susceptible to club root (a soil-borne fungus) so moving them around helps keep this at bay. Year 3: Roots, tubers, onions, and leaves: these crops do not have a particular “thirst” for nitrogen, so it is good to grow them after brassicas where the nitrogen content has been depleted. And if you have a very large plot, why not try a five-year rotation? Year 1 Brassicas; Year 2 Peas and beans; Year 3 Potatoes and fruiting veg; Year 4 The onion family; Year 5 Root and stem vegetables. The benefits of using this system include: • Soil fertility: Different crops have different nutrient requirements. Changing crops annually reduces the chance of soil deficiencies developing. • Weed control: Some crops, like potatoes and squashes, with dense foliage or large leaves, suppress weeds, thus reducing maintenance and weed problems in following crops. • Pest and disease control: Soil pests and diseases tend to attack specific plant families repeatedly. By rotating crops between sites, the pests tend to decline in

the period when their host plants are absent which helps reduce build-up of damaging populations of spores, eggs, and pests. Weather permitting, there are a few jobs that can be tackled this month: • Spray all fruit trees and bushes with a garlic winter wash on a fine day; do not spray in frosty conditions. It won’t hurt to hold the job over to next month. • Another job at the top of the list is cleaning up the plot by disposing of all the damaged and rotten crops: most of the overwintering vegetables will suffer if the conditions are wet. Also remove any leaves, as these are a perfect hide-out for slugs and snails. • Protect overwintering plants from cold, and check stakes and ties. • On days when you can’t work on the plot, clean the shed, greenhouse, tools, and linseed oil any wooden handles. Check that the watering can and buckets don’t leak and that the wheelbarrow doesn’t have a flat tyre! Seed trays and plant pots can be cleaned with a mild bleach solution to kill diseases that may have carried over to the new seedlings. • In non-freezing weather, shallots can be planted. Shallots take longer to grow than onions, but if planted now, should be ready earlier in the summer. • Any stored fruit and vegetables need checking for rotten or damaged produce and evidence of mice.

Happy New Year and here’s to another twelve months of successful gardening!

Time to Plan Your 2024 Home Improvements By Eileen Le Voi at Safe Local Trades In the wake of the pandemic, UK house prices had been on a steep upward trajectory. But in recent months, they have steadily dropped in response to inflation and interest rate increases, causing potential homebuyers to pause their plans to wait for a more stable market.

With more people choosing to stay put in their homes and make the most of their surroundings while the economic downturn continues, making improvements to a home can add value if done professionally, but some homeowners do not know who to trust, and put the work off as a result. However, even in these unusual times, planning your home improvements is key to avoiding disappointment. While Safe Local Trades has members across many disciplines; painting and decorating, plastering, electrician, kitchen/bathroom fitting, carpentry, handyman, carpet/upholstery cleaners, window/conservatory fitting etc, many are already reporting bookings up until March 2024. It is certainly the case with many tried and tested traders that they will be busy, so don’t delay in getting in touch to secure a slot. Some projects, like a new kitchen for example, may be subject to a longer lead-in time; there is the quote to agree, designs to finalise, products to order and then securing the availability of a great kitchen fitter. Equally, if you are looking to sell your home in 2024, then time is of the essence if you require some property pick-me-ups and stay ahead of the game. Interestingly, according to research, alongside consistent favourites like new kitchens, new bathrooms and extensions, solar panels and extra insulation are now among the top twenty home improvements that homebuyers are looking for. So, get planning now – our local tried and tested, vetted tradespeople are just a click away at www.safelocaltrades.com JANUARY 2024

hristmas festivities began in Bourne on December 2nd with the, now well-established, programme of a fabulous street, full of stalls and entertainments, including the stage upon which live music and dance entertained everyone all afternoon. Even though temperatures had plummeted to sub-zero levels, it didn’t stop the hardy folk of Bourne and district from gathering in their hundreds throughout North Street and the Market Place to enjoy the whole spectacle. The highlight, once he had finished meeting boys and girls in the Don’t Lose Hope Café, was for Santa to switch on the beautiful streetlights which, this year, was followed by an awesome firework display. Once again, a huge thank you goes out to everyone who was involved in any way to make this annual extravaganza run so smoothly and safely.

parkling wines are a very popular choice for many people and make an occasion into an event and an event into a celebration. The popularity of sparkling wines increases year on year, and they offer excellent value.

Numerous countries, globally, have winemakers producing sparkling wines. These types of wines are widely available, and I searched for a retailer that offers a good selection of ‘sparklers’, as well as still productions. English wine is increasing greatly, both in appreciation and in recognition, gaining numerous awards, both in the UK and abroad. Morrisons: The Best English Sparkling Brut Vintage (11.5% vol), I found to be very impressive. Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier grapes are utilised, to great advantage, culminating in a grand, finished product. This brut sparkling wine is stored for several years in cool cellars before being released. The fine bubbles receive much admiration from sparkling wine lovers. A very good floral and citrusy bouquet continues to the mouthfeel and sensation for the palate. From France, I located Morrisons: The Best Crémant de Limoux (12.5% vol). This brut sparkling wine is made in partnership with Sieur d’Arques, a French winemaking co-operative. Dominant with Chardonnay grapes,

and aged for a minimum of twelve months in the bottle, this ‘sparkler’ is another extremely popular production, indeed, with a good ‘stream’ of bubbles, adored by many. A very good aroma of apple hints extends to the fruity, citrusy pleasures, on the mouth. Italy is another country with an impressive history for producing sparkling wines. Morrisons: The Best Prosecco Valdobbiadene DOCG (11% vol) has a great number of devotees too. This production graces dining tables regularly and is very much appreciated and respected, having a good perlage to please the eye, then a most acceptable bouquet and mouthfeel of apple sensations, plus white fruits.

by their wine experts. They are perfect by themselves and also to accompany a lot of dishes, including fish, seafood and white meats. Dating from 1899, Morrisons have become a leading supermarket, providing a wealth of products, from everyday household essentials, through specific requirements, to an excellent range of wines, spirits, and other beverages. For all products and information, please visit www.morrisons.co.uk

As always, enjoy!

Wills

Why do I need a will?

Wills are important to ensure that your assets pass to those you would like. If you are not married, your partner will not automatically inherit your estate. If you have children, you can also use a will to nominate guardians to ensure they are looked after if the worst may happen.

Lasting Powers of Attorney

Probate What is it?

What are they?

When a person sadly passes away, some banks and institutes require a Grant of Probate to enable you to collect in their assets. If you are selling a house, a solicitor will require this to complete the sale.

These are used when you lose mental capacity but must be created while you can still make decisions. If you do not create these in time, then unfortunately the solution is more costly and time consuming.

We are licensed to assist with the probate application on your behalf, as well as distribute the estate, making everything simpler at this difficult time.

Lasting Powers of Attorneys (LPAs) are documents that allow someone that you nominate as your attorney, to deal with your financial or health affairs on your behalf.

Mayor

Words from the Mayor

COUNCILLOR BRENDA JOHNSON

As we start a new year, I would like to say how proud I am of the community of Bourne, Dyke and Twenty. Our communities never cease to amaze me; they are so good at pulling together.

T

he Christmas lights switch-on this year, with the added touch of the fireworks, was very well attended on a really cold day, and the entertainments showcased the talents of so many local people.

Bourne Town Council is now responsible for the playing field in Dyke as well as the Recreation Ground in Bourne. They have also taken on the responsibility for the skatepark. I am really pleased to see this project come to a good conclusion. It was not an easy project especially with the Covid lockdowns. It is great to have two generous charities in Bourne (The Len Pick Trust and Bourne United Charities) and they have both got behind this project to make it happen. I would like to thank them both. I have recently been meeting members of ‘Bourne to Shine’, a wonderful charity that supports families with children with a wide range of disabilities, who meet for coffee at the Sugar Mill on a Monday morning at 9.30am. I was very pleased to draw their Christmas raffle at the Quiz Night held at the Sugar Mill, who are a huge support for this group. I have two upcoming events to raise money for local charities. On February 17th, The Band From County Hell are coming to the Corn Exchange and there will be a sausage and mash supper, (with a vegan alternative). The cost is £20 a head and the tickets

60

Bourne

are available from the SKDC Guildhall website. Then on March 8th, the re-scheduled Civic Dinner in the Corn Exchange will be held – details to follow. I would urge all bike riders to be very mindful that at this time of year, with the dark mornings and evenings, it is wise to wear some reflective clothing and a helmet. From a car driver’s point of view, it is often difficult to spot a bike in the rain and dark on unlit roads. I am delighted to see that the skatepark is getting lots of use, but remember if you are cycling there, be careful and keep safe! I was disappointed to hear some residents complaining about there being nothing in Bourne since the Round Table stopped doing the senior citizens’ Christmas lunches. In my opinion, Bourne has so much to offer, with a fantastic Darby and Joan Club and a thriving U3A. The SKAMP group put on a great pantomime every year, which is not expensive, along with at least one other production each year. There are WI groups in Bourne; the Salvation Army put on a ‘Warm Hub’ on a Friday during the winter; Dyke Village Hall also runs a ‘Warm Hub’ on a Tuesday morning with plenty of homemade cakes and cups of tea to enjoy. We have some wonderful cafes in town and even one in the toy shop in the Burghley Arcade! The Town Hall has quite a wide variety of events going on and I went to their Murder Mystery recently, which was great fun. Please go out and explore the town when the weather permits. JANUARY 2024

“Menopause Monologues”

W

hen a friend of the Old Town Hall told us she was collating stories and anecdotes related to the menopause, we were excited to see what she would write, and we promised her a space to perform. Little could we know how successful she would be; not only has Neena Quinlan written an hilariously funny show but her performance is sassy, well-timed and makes you laugh out loud. If anyone has ever seen Neena on stage in a Bourne Footlights production, they’ll know what brilliant comedy timing she has (I saw her on stage in 2017 in the play “Glorious” as Latina maid, Maria – priceless!) Menopause Monologues is a one-woman show presented in two halves: in the first half Neena is dressed as we always thought women of menopause age would i.e., frumpily. She portrays a character with issues which many would identify and associate with that time of life (think forgetfulness, the “assault of

Review by Hilary Bloomer

gravity” on a woman’s body and her ‘Tena Lady’ loyalty card). In the second half, she adds a realism that every single audience member could identify with, her acting so clever that you wonder if she really is muffing her lines or whether it is part of the act! Don’t just take our word for it, visitors to the first night of the show were emphatic in their praise: ‘What a brilliant evening!’ ‘My cheeks ached through laughing so much’, ‘Just the tonic I needed – and I’ve come away feeling normal!’ Menopause Monologues will be on again at the Old Town Hall, Bourne at 7.30pm on Friday January 19th, so grab your friends or your bloke and buy tickets from www. bournetownhall.org.uk/events.

Our licensed bar, The Shambles, will be open before, during and after the show and you can take your drinks upstairs. All proceeds from the evening will go towards Bourne Footlights and the Bourne Town Hall regeneration project.

Parkinson’s UK’s Bourne Support Group: Urgent Appeal for New Volunteers Local residents are encouraged to get in touch if they can spare a few hours each month to ensure the group can continue to support people affected by Parkinson’s. The group meets at the Bourne Methodist Church on the last Wednesday of each month and provides information, support, friendship, and activities to local people affected by Parkinson’s, their families, and carers. The group is looking for volunteers to help run and plan activities. These are flexible roles with a big impact, ensuring that people don’t face Parkinson’s alone in Bourne and the surrounding areas. Around 153,000 people in the UK are diagnosed with Parkinson’s, including approximately 10,995 in the East Midlands alone. Parkinson’s is what happens when the brain cells that 64

Bourne

make dopamine start to die. There are more than forty symptoms, from tremor and pain to anxiety. Some are treatable, but the drugs can have serious side effects. It gets worse over time and there’s no cure. Yet! Parkinson’s UK is the UK’s leading charity supporting those with the condition. Its mission is to find a cure and improve life for everyone affected by Parkinson’s through pioneering research, information, support, and campaigning.

Visit parkinsons.org.uk for more information about Parkinson’s UK groups, activities, and support. For further details about volunteering vacancies for the Bourne support group please contact Rose at rcrawley@parkinsons.org.uk or on 0344 225 3634. JANUARY 2024

Local Body Builder Represents Team GB in Seattle, USA

B

ourne resident, Callum Farrell has capped a fabulous year by competing in the World Natural Bodybuilding Federation Professional World Championships in Seattle and finishing in fifth place. “Not bad being fifth in the world as a 20-year-old Type 1 diabetic though,” the former Bourne Academy youngster commented. Callum is a personal trainer at Tedd’s Health and Fitness in Market Deeping, and his staggering progress in the glistening world of body building is all the more incredible as he has had to struggle with diabetes and several serious injuries, since discovering his love for fitness at the age of twelve and competing in bodybuilding competitions, alongside his school studies, three years later.

Callum’s first show this year was the WNBF ‘Supernaturals’ in Birmingham in October, where he won the Junior Mr Golden Era title and received an invite to the World Championships in Seattle the following month. Less than three weeks later, he had another show lined up, the 2BrosPro Natural Qualifier in Maidenhead. Being so close to the Seattle trip, he had to diet through this show and come into it looking around 70-80% of his potential. However, he took first place in both the Junior Classic Physique and Open Men’s Class D (over 86kg) Classic Physique divisions.

many international athletes there were competing in this competition it started to feel more real. Having Team GB there along with my coaching team made it all so much easier to work through. On show day, we all got to the venue early to get prepped and tanned ready for the stage. Show days, contrary to popular belief, are usually the calmest for the athletes as we’re in an autopilot state of mind, listening to the instructions of our coach and mentally running through the past three to six months of intense physical work we’ve put ourselves through.”

Callum describes the next few days: “My motivation going into the Seattle show was through the roof. I’m sure you can imagine my excitement getting to represent my country with a big group of Brits with identical interests. Once we landed in Seattle and I realised just how

“That being said, realising that I’d be competing in the super heavyweight division in the World Championships, was a bit of a shock and I did get a bit nervous seeing the guys over ten years older than me backstage. I’d like to think I held my own. I am extremely proud of my coaching team and Team GB; everyone put in 110% effort to make this a special moment.” He concludes, “Now that my competitive season has come to an end, I will be once again dedicating most of my time to coaching, working alongside my coaching team to bring my clients in the new year the best results they can get without sacrificing quality of life. A nice little diet doesn’t have to be as intense as a competition prep … ha ha!” Follow Callum’s progress on his Instagram accounts, both coaching and bodybuilding pages: @callumfarrelll and @_cfcoaching_

Household Support Fund Launched in South Kesteven Lincolnshire Community Foundation is working with South Kesteven District Council to provide vital funds across the district. Grants of up to £300 will be given to individuals and families, who have not received any cost-of-living support. The funding originates from the UK government via the South Kesteven Household Support Scheme.

There are many households across the area who find themselves in financial hardship or just about managing, but do not qualify for any other benefit or income support. Support will be given predominantly in the form of vouchers for food and energy (no cash grants are given). The priority groups are: • Pensioners (in receipt of old age pension only) • Single parents • Those with underlying health conditions but not on benefits • Single person households.
