The Deepings Methodist Church Silver Jubilee As you walk or drive down Church Street Deeping St. James have you ever noticed the modern building opposite the Waterton Arms car park? That’s the Deepings Methodist Church, and this year it is 25 years old! The current building was completed and opened in May 1990, but there has been a Methodist Church on this site since 1880 (that’s 135 years of Methodist worship!). In May we celebrated with a wonderful exhibition of the old and the new, bringing back many memories of how the old building was becoming inadequate for the Boys’ and Girls’ Brigades, the band and their instruments, and all the other activities of the church. It’s amazing that a small group of farsighted people had the vision and determination to start the long process of planning and fund raising, until their dreams of a new building were realised.

The Rotary Club of The Deepings is looking for New Members

The anniversary weekend also included a concert by the singer/ songwriter Paul Field (of Millennium Prayer fame), and a visit from the Vice President of the Methodist Conference, Mrs. Gillian Dascombe, who led morning worship. In July, we held a Church Family picnic in Ferry Meadows and in August a “Holiday at Home” Club. The year will continue with a Festival of Talents in September, a Barn Dance in November, and Christmas Tree Festival in December. There are still plenty of treats to share if you would like to come along. Of course a Church is always about worshipping God, and every Sunday there is morning and evening worship at 10.30am and 6.00pm. On the first Sunday of every month Messy Church takes place in the afternoon. This is a fun time of 4

Rotary volunteers have been serving the needs of communities worldwide since 1905. The Rotary volunteers build friendships and enlarge their circle of business and professional acquaintances. Nick Ash: Save The Deepings Youth Centre “We are still awaiting a meeting with Lincs County Council, but things are looking a lot brighter at the moment… Plans are already in hand for an exciting Autumn/ Winter, but what we need now is some volunteers to help us build a brighter future for the Youth Centre. We are looking for people to join the board of trustees, people who can help us out with a few hours of admin each month and of course volunteers who can work with our young people at our weekly sessions. The Facebook page ‘Mad Woman with a Dog in a Buggy aka Memories of Deeping’ has almost 2500 members, and was created by local resident Kerry Pirie. The page is intended for The Deepings’ residents to share memories, and messages. We wanted to give everyone the chance to read these messages, which are written by local residents. Each month, we will select posts that we feel the community would appreciate. Thank you Kerry for letting us share these messages!

Deepings Camera Club Established in 1985, DCC prides itself on being a friendly club, welcoming all levels and ages of photographers. Membership stands at around eighty, with a wide range of knowledge and experience, which members are more than willing to share. The club meets at 7.30pm on Wednesday evenings at Deepings Community Centre, with a good programme of events, details of which are posted on the club website www.deepingscameraclub.org On the first Monday of the month, a more practical evening for a smaller group of members is held, where subjects include learning how to prepare work for competitions, how to use the club forum and how to deal with Photoshop techniques. A number of recent accolades have come the way of the club, both on a local and a regional stage. DCC recently came first in the Pat Goode Memorial Trophy and second in the Brotherhoods PDI (Projected Digital Image) competition. Further afield, they won the Chesterfield Trophy and came second in the North and East Midlands Federation Championship.

Many members had their work selected for these competitions, some of whom are well established with the club and already have awards. Others, however, were beginners just a few years ago and have developed their skills and expertise by entering the Club’s internal competitions and using feedback from judges and other club members to improve. Club lectures also provide the opportunity to gain new ideas and techniques for experimentation. Interested? The market in Market Deeping has been trading since 1220. The famous poet John Clare, who was born just down the road in Helpston, regularly visited the market, and it’s believed to be the place where he bought his first writing book (during the early 1800s). Thus, Market Deeping’s market is certainly a place of history, heritage, and tradition in our community. The market is still thriving, with a range of stalls every Wednesday, located in the Co-op car park. Every week, the smell of fresh hand-made bread and cakes fills the air, from Kings Road Bakery, a family-run artisan bakery, run by Ann and Mick Smith. They have over thirty years’ experience, making and creating irresistible fresh recipes. The Potty Gardener brightens the Market with a beautiful range of indoor plants, flowers, 6

and containers. Bjarne Hansen has been trading for seven years and he offers knowledgeable advice to help you find the right product for your garden. The newest stall is Danielle & Luke Cleaver’s fruit and veg stall which joined the market four months ago. This stall is colourful with almost a limitless selection of fruit and veg. Danielle is always happy to take special orders. The longest trading stall is the watch stall which has been trading 24 years, specialising in gold and silver watches, watch repairs and batteries. Traditional market choices, including: Scarborough Fare, which sells seasonal game, fresh fish and eggs; YG Fashion’s range of women’s clothing, women’s and men’s socks, underwear and nightwear; and The Card Stall selection of gift bags, puzzle books, helium balloons, and cards.

| A little bit of history

DISCOVERING. . . THE BRIdGE There has been a bridge over the River Welland connecting Market Deeping with the south for over 450 years but the one we see today has become a landmark in South Lincolnshire.

motor cars and heavy vehicles we see today yet it survives as a monument to the reliability of Victorian civil engineering.

The first bridge was originally made of wood and most probably constructed in the 16th century because it is mentioned in a survey of 1563 as either the Wheat Bridge or the Blind Bridge and there is a further mention in parish documents when repair work was carried out in the years 1585-87.

The bridge carries the main road from the south into Market Deeping, better known today as the A15, and was opened with due ceremony in July 1842 when the first vehicle to cross was the Royal Mail stagecoach making its regular run between Peterborough and Lincoln but stopping here to give passengers and horses rest and refreshment at one of the local hostelries.

This was replaced by the present bridge in the mid-19th century, sturdily built of stone and with three arches spanning the waterway, a solid structure that was designed to last. Since then, it has provided a major service to the town during a period of changing traffic from horse drawn carts and carriages to the

The bridge has continued in use ever since although the introduction of motorised transport had a dramatic effect on traffic flows that have steadily increased as the years progressed with the result that there has been an additional strain on the stone structure. Eventually, the number of cars, coaches and lorries travelling through Market Deeping became so great and the subsequent road conditions so dangerous for pedestrians that Lincolnshire County Council had no alternative but to relieve the pressure by building a new 1½-mile bypass at a cost of £8 million which opened in July 1998. Through traffic now passes Market Deeping by to the west while life in town proceeds at a more leisurely pace and the future of the bridge appears to be assured for another century.

6 Buy multiple dehumidifiers if you’re experiencing mould, and place them in dark areas (including wardrobes).

7Stock up on jumpers if you’re moving up north!

8 A housing bond should be protected, if not your landlord is breaking the law.

9 Take photos of your property and evaluate the quality of the inventories when you move in, which will stop you from being charged for any damage caused by previous tenants.

10 At the end of your third year, apply for a three-year NUS card to continue receiving student discount!

12 Take: a doorstop (triangular ones are best).

Pork, apple and leek hotpot With the apple season nearly upon us, this easy hotpot recipe will go down lovely with the family this autumn.

Method

Serves 4:

1. Fry apple and onion until golden.

Food |

Ingredients:

450g diced pork

1 large cooking applepeeled, cored and diced

225g potatoes-peeled and thinly sliced

1 large onion- finely chopped

Sage Seasoning

2 leeks- washed and roughly chopped

50g melted butter

2. In a greased casserole dish: place leeks in the bottom, add the pork, cover with apple and onion mixture. Then layer the sliced potatoes evenly on top.

150g mature cheddar-grated

3. Sprinkle with a pinch of sage and season to taste. 4. Pour in enough water to come halfway up the dish. 5. Brush the potatoes with melted butter. 6. Cover and bake for 45 minutes at 180C, remove lid after 30 minutes and top with grated cheddar. Return to the oven without the lid and bake for the remaining 15 minutes.

Don’t Let The Wrong Foods Weigh You Down – Maintain a Nutritional Balance Balanced nutrition is very easy to achieve, and does not mean denying yourself of any of your favourite foods. The media is full of articles that tell you that cutting out ‘this’ group of foods, or ‘that’ particular food, will make you lose pounds or make you healthier, but they are often not backed up by science, or the findings have been taken out of context. Improving your diet may mean cutting down on certain things, but the difference in the way that you feel will be worth it. So where do we start? All nutrients are essential; however, at different times in our lives we need different amounts. There are some things like vitamin C and the B vitamins that we need to have every day to make sure that we are healthy, whereas we end up eating some other food groups in excess of our needs, like saturated fat and carbohydrates.

A nutritionist can take a look at your diet and check for any deficiencies, as well as advising changes that can be made to your weekly shopping list to help you lose weight, or improve your immune system. If you are an athlete or a gym bunny, good nutritional advice can help you improve your stamina for your event, and consequently your recovery time. The focus is always on the dietary goal of the client, which is given in achievable steps. If you try and change too much at once it can very often be unsuccessful, so improvements have to be sustainable. Take a long look at what you eat, and then come and see how it can be improved.

A simple dietary analysis can make a massive difference to your health. If you are exercising, stressed or ill, you use more of certain nutrients than normal. If your caffeine or alcohol intake is higher than recommended then the body is stripped of other essential nutrients, so you can easily become deficient if your diet does not provide for these losses.

1) Where were you born, and what is your fondest memory of your childhood? I was born in Dulwich, London and went to the Brompton Oratory School, Chelsea. The most exciting memory was auditioning and getting my part in both Sauce Tartare and Sauce Piquant shows (aged 12). 2) Who has had the greatest influence on your life and why? My mother: she gave me lots of encouragement and support with my dancing, education, and career.

Marina Palmer is the Principal of the Deepings School of Dancing, and also the Performing Arts Co-ordinator of the Annual Deepings Festival of Performing Arts, which has been in association with The Deepings School and Deeping St. James CP School for 2 years. Prior to that, it was with the Deepings Arts Community Association for 8 years. The Deepings School of Dancing was originally formed by Gwen Wilbourne and Stella Sutton 60 years ago. In 1986 Gwen sold the school to Marina, who had moved to the area having sold her school in London. Marina`s dancing career started at an early age with excellent ballet training from teachers in the International Ballet Company, the Pavinoff Ballet Company, and American tap training with the late American teacher and choreographer: Buddy Bradley. At the age of 12 she appeared in two shows at the Cambridge Theatre, London. Audrey Hepburn was also a chorus girl in the senior group in the same two shows. Marina appeared in summer seasons, pantomimes, and cabarets in theatres and clubs across the country performing her fire-eating contortionist act alongside many stage greats, and continued performing until 1996 when she retired due to ill health. The Deepings School of Dancing aims to provide training to pupils (boys and girls) in: Ballet, Tap, Acrobatics, Modern Jazz, Kids Zumba and Musical Theatre from the age of 2½ upwards in a fun and friendly atmosphere. 24

3) Which two characters, (alive or not), would you most enjoy sharing a meal with and why? Gene Kelly, and the late Buddy Bradley – who was my tap teacher, and a great choreographer. 4) How would you describe yourself in just five words? The increasing development and growing community in The Deepings means there is now a great need for a multi-purpose building for various activities, because our village halls are too small. 6) What advice would you give to a 16 year old you? Remove Infections - with MalwareBytes Malware Bytes is NOT an antivirus solution. It is however one of the best tools for removing malware from your system including viruses, adware, PuPs (potentially unwanted programs) and trojans. As an IT engineer it is one of the main tools in my arsenal for combating system infections and I run it every quarter on my own system to hunt down anything that may have crept through my security software (Kaspersky). The first thing to do is to download MalwareBytes from a safe source. I use the download service at CNET.com. Do a browser search for ‘cnet malwarebytes’ and you’ll find it. This is important as, as with other popular free applications, criminals and hackers target such apps and frequently load false download locations. By using CNET (or similar) you know that you are getting the correct code, virus and malware free. When installing accept the license and the default directories and finally ensure that you remove the tick from the trial of the full version (which is not free). Finally click Finish. MalwareBytes will now finish installing and will open at the main scan page. You will probably see that the first thing that happens is that the tool uses the internet to update its database with the latest information indicated by the blue bar next to Database Version. This is important as this is where MalwareBytes keeps all the relevant information about the latest malware so let it finish before continuing. Once done click on the SCAN button. MalwareBytes will now attempt to remove the infections and will report status when complete. That’s it you’re done! A note on PuPs: As the name suggests these are POTENTIALLY unwanted programs.

Malwarebytes will flag these up but check the information for a PuP as it may be a program that you want to keep. Most of the time it won’t be but it is worth checking.

Is this Animal Welfare? This week, I read an article in one of my professional magazines entitled, “Animal welfare-focused practice”. I was expecting this to be both interesting and uplifting, but was soon quite horrified by what I had read.

Under a paragraph headed “Realism”, the author states that a welfare-focused practice does not afford animals any rigid absolute right to life. He states that the reality of the situation has to be measured against the owner’s situation and resources available.

and that owners continue to present animals for treatment in the expectation of a professional service. Sometimes, this will mean that welfare-focused practice is not doing whatever is in the interests of the particular animal in front of us”.

Further in the paragraph, he states that welfarefocused practice does not mean ignoring owners, and that the practice needs to discuss the owner’s expectations, resources, constraints and plans, (that word “resources” again!) He then states that the owner’s thoughts should be factored into the decision-making, but that we should not pander to the owners completely!

What all this is suggesting is that it is ok to euthanise an animal if the owners cannot afford to pay, because if you do not, the practice would fail. The truth is most clients can pay their bills, but some just need time to pay in instalments. Bills can be reduced to help the small number of clients that are in real difficulties and, as a last resort, where an owner is adamant that nothing can be paid, then the animal can be signed over to the vet, treated and re-homed. All this can be done without a practice failing, (my practice is proof of this).

In my opinion, there are only two situations where an animal does not have a right to life, and that is when that animal has become a danger to people or to other animals, or when the animal is in such pain that there is no other choice. Owners are paramount in any discussion of euthanasia, and everything should be done to help them with their decision. The lack of resources is not a reason for euthanasia if we can be confident of a successful outcome. Under a paragraph called “Long-termism”, he states that, “we need to ensure that our practice is able to continue functioning and employing staff by making a reasonable net profit on services and products,

It is absolutely wrong that we should not consider the best interests of the animal in front of us. It is up to the practice to make this work. The other concern is that all this was written by a veterinary surgeon who is a specialist in animal welfare science!

New pension rules... The rules surrounding pensions have changed significantly over the last few years and will have a major impact, both on how you save for retirement and on how you access your money, once you retire.

The pension freedom reforms New pension rules, introduced in April 2015, have given people far more choice over what they can do with their pension pots. These new rules only apply to people in defined contribution schemes, also called personal or workplace pensions, where you build up your own pension pot. You need to be 55 or over (or in very poor health) to access your pension pot. What used to happen? In the past, for most people when you retired, you could take up to 25% of your pot as taxfree cash and the rest had to be turned into a retirement income by buying an annuity. The new rules There are several ways you can now use your pension pot. You can: • Buy a guaranteed income for life – an annuity. • I nvest your pot in funds designed to provide you with a flexible retirement income – called drawdown (the income is not guaranteed for life). • Take small cash sums from your pot when you want them. • Take all your pot as cash in one go. • Mix the above options.

If you take cash, 25% of the withdrawal is tax-free (the other 75% is taxable). If you choose the annuity or drawdown options you can take up to 25% of the amount used for this option as tax-free cash. The rest is used to buy an annuity or goes into drawdown. You then pay tax on the income you get from these. What to watch out for Any cash you take from your pension pot is added to the rest of your income for the year and you pay Income Tax on this in the usual way. If you take a large sum of cash you could push your income into a higher tax bracket and end up paying higher-rate or even additionalrate Income Tax on the lump sum. This increase in income may also mean you are no longer eligible for benefits that you’re claiming.

Lasting Powers of Attorney – not just an optional extra

A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) for property and financial affairs is a document which allows you to appoint someone to make certain financial decisions on your behalf. This includes paying bills, managing bank accounts and selling your property, should there ever be a time when you are physically or mentally unable to do so yourself. It is impossible to know whether you, your partner or a parent will ever be in a position to need someone to act for you, but the consequences of being in that position and being unprepared are so potentially devastating that preparation is imperative. The “One Show” recently highlighted a situation in which a forty-two year old man was injured in a jet-ski accident which left him in a coma for three years. He had no Power of Attorney, which meant that his wife had to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed as his Deputy. This application can cost thousands of pounds and can take many months. Perhaps a more common situation is that of a married couple, living in a house that is jointly owned. If one spouse loses capacity, through a stroke or dementia, and moves into a residential home, the other person may not be able to afford

to remain in the house and may wish to sell to buy a smaller property. Not only will it be necessary to make an application for a Deputy for their spouse, but it will also be necessary to make a separate application to the Court to enable the property to be sold. Both applications could have been completely avoided by having a Power of Attorney in place. An LPA is therefore vital. Think of it as a one-off insurance premium. Once done, it can simply be put away and forgotten, but you can rest assured in the knowledge that you have done all that it is possible to do to protect yourself and your family against any unforeseen future problems. Sergeant Mosley’s Musings Beating the Burglars. Choosing a subject this month has been easy. Unfortunately, as you may have seen in the local media and on social media, there has been a series of burglaries in the Bourne and Market Deeping area. The fact that someone has entered your home and rifled through all your personal belongings can be devastating. As such, I thought it appropriate to pass on some simple home security tips and advice, especially with the holiday season in full swing.

Home Security: • Make sure all doors are firmly closed and locked, even if you are at home. You will be surprised how many people don’t lock their doors. Imagine how long it takes to slip in through an insecure door and take a handbag or the keys to your car! • Any window larger than a human head should have a lock on it. If you leave a room, then shut and lock the window. If you leave the house, ensure ALL windows are shut and locked. • Set the alarm if you have one, but let a key holder know the code. If you don’t have an alarm system, then consider installing one. These can be invaluable in deterring burglars. • Consider installing a CCTV system. This will greatly assist the police in identifying any offenders. • Make sure all valuables, such as jewellery, are out of sight and hidden well away. • Keep all personal documents, vehicle documents and your car keys hidden out of sight. • Use automatic timers to light up your home and consider using timers on any radios inside your property to give the appearance of occupancy. • Make sure you have adequate and suitable external lighting. • Ask a friend or neighbour to check on your house regularly to clear post from the letterbox, put out the bin, and return it, on bin days and water the plants. • Ask your neighbour to park on your drive if you are away for a few days, to make it look like someone is living there.

• Lock your side gate to restrict access to your back garden. • Register all your valuable property on “Immobilise”, which can be found at immobilise.com By registering their valuables on immobilise.com, owners can put details of their prized possessions on a national database that police can access and compare against items that have been found or recovered from suspected criminals. This means that, should your property be lost or stolen, there is a good chance of it being returned. The online service is totally free and is quick and easy to use. Items marked as being registered with Immobilise are less likely to be stolen, and households displaying Immobilise stickers are less likely to be targeted by burglars. One thing that I can assure you is that Lincolnshire Police, working with our neighbouring colleagues, are working hard to catch those responsible for the burglaries. They had either spotted my BIG TOM Driving School car in the petrol station forecourt, or perhaps my uniform was the giveaway. “This lady needs a hand filling her car up,” said the cashier. “I can’t assist, I don’t even know how to drive!” By her side was a very respectable looking lady, around seventy years old (always dangerous territory guessing ages), and she pointed outside to an equally attractive looking, high spec. Range Rover. She was very apologetic for not knowing what to do, but explained her husband had passed away, and he always used to do it. “Is it petrol or diesel?” I asked. She looked at me and went on, “Do you know, I haven’t the faintest idea, how WOULD you know anyway?” Bless her, I did my BIG TOM Driving School crash course on refuelling. Water Wars on The River Welland:

A Reflection on The Raft Race

Teams from The Deepings and the surrounding areas were transformed into Smurfs, Minions, pirates, The Flintstones, the Wackey Races characters, The Teletubbies, and various wellknown cartoon characters at The Deeping’s Raft Race on Sunday 2nd August. The Raft Race is an event that could only happen in Deeping!

Deeping’s Signal House’, and many businesses from our High Street that opened especially to support the event.

Community spirit flourished as many spectators supported the event and brought their picnics, chairs, and families to the River Welland to enjoy the 31-degree heat!

This year offered something very different: the Routemaster Bus Bar, where spectators were able to have a birds eye view of the crowds, the fun fair and the fancy dress, and probably the best part: have a beer!

Despite the beautiful weather, it was a wet day for many participants, and multiple raft teams believed it would only be fair if the spectators didn’t escape from a soaking from the Welland. One house on Bridge Street anticipated that there would be a water war on the Welland, and they had multiple buckets on standby for the rafts that were also armed with buckets, hosepipes, and water pistols! War had officially begun by the time that the team from Marston’s pub had reached this particular house’s territory. Multiple businesses, charities, and food outlets opened stalls from the Market Place through to Bridge Street. This included the beautiful owls from the Exotic Pet Refuge, the irresistible food from Hambleton Bakery and Groovy Foods, ‘Save the

The People’s Strictly winner, Cassidy Little, gave the winning teams and participants their well-deserved medals, and trophies.

Local and national bands performed in venues throughout The Deepings, which not only showcased the variety of talent that The Deepings undoubtedly has to offer, but also the great music scene in The Deepings. The Raft Race supported Dementia Support South Lincs and The Exotic Pet Refuge. Your donations have certainly supported two important causes. Thank you to everyone involved with the making of the Raft Race, the participants, and the residents of The Deepings for a fantastic day.
