Welcome to our October edition... Welcome to our October issue this issue is fuller than ever with features, advice and ideas. Don’t forget that “Stoptober” is now upon us. Research has found that if you can stop smoking for the whole month, you’re five times more likely to quit for good. Making that step isn’t easy, but knowing you’re not alone – that thousands of others have pledged to quit too – can be a huge boost

I’ve always been a bit of a collector of useful graffiti and the odd whimsical message. Therefore, the advice on the back of a lorry seen last week, being driven by one of our not-so-slim brothers, seemed more than appropriate: “Life is uncertain… so eat your pudding first!” – a case of “Do as I do, and do as I say!” We sporting fans continue to be spoilt by the desserts served up for us this year. The Rugby World Cup is under way and, just as the

to your willpower. Why not have a go this year? You’ll find some advice inside. With the money you’ve saved then treat yourselves to a Christmas to remember – less than a hundred days from now! Again, my thanks go to our contributors, whose efforts and dedication continue to ensure that we are your “favourite freebie”, and to you, our readers, for your words of encouragement and suggestions.

C la ire x magnificent triumph at the Battle of Agincourt in 1415 enabled Henry V to go down as one of our greatest leaders, so too with Stuart Lanc… Hang on, they didn’t have the All Blacks in those days! Anyway, dreams are for dreaming, and let’s hope the tournament lives up to its fabulous expectations. Meanwhile, there’s a full magazine here to entertain and inform you, as you await the next game. Elsewhere, you’ll find the customary plethora of features, opinions, suggestions and advice, Enjoy the read!

Solar Panels time to fit them

…NOW

Thinking of installing solar panels on your property? Take a look to find out why now could be financially the very best time to do it. Thousands of homeowners across the country have installed solar panels over the last few years, saving money on their energy bills, protecting themselves from future price rises and, best of all, getting paid by the government for the electricity they generate. This has made solar energy a sound investment and given homeowners a healthy return. However, recent announcements made by the Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC) strongly suggest that Feed-in Tariff (FiT) payments are to see drastic cuts in 2016. In fact, the Feed-in Tariff review document, published on August 27th by the DECC, laid out plans to cut the Feed-in Tariff for small scale solar PV installations by as much as 87%. Although the plans have not yet been confirmed, it is likely that all bands of the tariff will be affected quite severely. However, it is the installations in the 0-10kW band (almost all domestic installations) that will be hardest hit. In addition, a review of the default degression (applied to all tariffs) is expected to reduce the Feed-in Tariff to zero, for installations under 10kw, by 2019.

4

D I S C O V E R I N G

If you are considering installing a solar PV system, our advice is to ACT NOW, or risk a significant reduction in the pay back your system generates. All systems installed prior to the cut-off date of 31st December will receive the Feed-in Tariff currently shown on the Ofgem website, which is up to 12.47 pence per kWh. After January 1st 2016, it could be as low as 1.63 pence per kWh! Princeenergy is a registered MCS installer, and can offer advice on all aspects of solar installations, from products and the suitability of your property to potential paybacks and government schemes. As a trading division of Princebuild, a family-run business that has been trading for over forty years, you can be safe in the knowledge that Princeenergy will be here to provide support and servicing through the life of your solar panels and beyond. Deeping Shopping Centre Charity Car Boot Success September 2015 – The Deeping Shopping Centre has been doing its bit for charity, raising hundreds of pounds by holding its first ever charity car boot sale on Sunday 16th August. All of the money raised has been donated to the Rotary Club of the Deepings and the Inner Wheel Charity. The proceeds will be used both locally and internationally. Bargain hunters flocked to the event, which ran from 8am until 1pm within the long stay area of the centre’s car park, making it a huge success, with a fantastic £497.56 being raised for the chosen charities.

Deeping Shopping Centre manager, Kevin Smith, commented: “This was our first ever charity car boot sale event and I am extremely pleased with the amount raised for the Rotary Club. It’s great to be able to help local causes in this way.” The Rotary Club of the Deepings support a wide range of charities including Dementia Support, DEBRA, Stroke Awareness and Polio Eradication. Rotary Club President, Ken Littlemore commented: “This was our Club’s first fund raising venture working together with The Deeping Shopping Centre and it has proved to be a huge success. With the kind permission of The Deeping Shopping Centre, we plan to hold other car boot sales in the near future. We hope that our Club’s next charity fund raising event in aid of Polio Eradication, to be held at the Shopping Centre on 17th October 2015, will be equally successful.”

huge success!

Credit Unions What’s that all about then?

Credit Unions are non-profitmaking, democratically run, financial cooperatives, whose members receive a small dividend on savings, and it is the savings from the members which are lent out to generate the income, to help pay for the running costs. The Access Points are staffed wholly by volunteers, on a rota basis. The Lincolnshire Credit Union has a local access point at The Institute, 38 Church Street, Deeping St. James, and is open on a Monday, from 10am until noon. They provide ethical and equitable banking and create opportunities for members to save, apply for a loan or to invest. People who may not have a bank account, for whatever reason, are given the opportunity to build up a proven credit rating, by using this service. Interest rates on loans are reasonable and much safer than pay-day loans.

If you would like to find out more information, please visit www.lincscreditunion.org.uk

Age Concern Deeping – Here to Help You. Age Concern Deepings is a voluntary organisation which was founded in 1986. In June 2000, we became a registered group within Age Concern, the federation which was the national body of Age Concern groups and organisations. On April 1st 2009, Age UK was launched, which combined the operations of Age Concern and Help the Aged to form the UK’s largest charity for older people. However, Age Concern Deepings made a decision to keep its own identity. We are always seeking to improve and extend our services for the elderly of the Deepings. We run a luncheon club every Thursday, where up to forty people are served two courses plus tea, coffee or soft drinks, with a raffle to finish. Transport can be provided by our two mini-buses.

Day-care is provided on Fridays, with up to twelve people attending. Day-care looks after the more infirm people, providing them with some stimulation and respite for their carers. The Befriending service has about ninety clients and befrienders, and aims to visit clients at least for one hour a week. Sunday club meets on the third Sunday of the month in the Joan Wake Community Room, and provides a variety of entertainment. All transport is provided by our own two mini-buses, which take people shopping, out for meals, day care, luncheon club and seaside trips (weather permitting). If you would like to be part of our organisation, or use our services, please contact Betty or Bob on 01778 344935.

Starting University this year? | In the Hot Seat

Councillor Wayne Lester, Chairman of Market Deeping Town Council and Mayor of Market Deeping

1) Where were you born, and what is your fondest memory of your childhood? I was born in Peterborough and I’m “a Dogsthorpe boy”. For my memories, I’d have: a) Living at our home in Dogsthorpe, we had a large garden with a very big vegetable patch, garages at the back, which gave me easy access to my granddad’s house and his garages, which were like an Aladdin’s cave. b) My dad, who was a bus driver by day and banger car racer in his spare time. c) The music of Elvis Presley and ABBA. 2) Who has had the greatest influence on your life and why? My family; mum, dad, granddad, step-mum and of course my wonderful wife. They have all made me the man I am today.

October sees our “Hot Seat” occupied by Market Deeping’s Mayor, Councillor Wayne Lester, a Chartered Construction Manager with local construction firm and a resident of the town for over twelve years. Wayne is a devoted family man, father of James, Joshua and Grace, and has been married to Kirsty for twenty-one years. Both are very keen community-minded people, with Kirsty helping Age Concern Deepings, as their minute secretary. Wayne helps with Market Deeping Cub Scouts, and also supports the PTFA at William Hildyard School. He has held the post as Councillor for Market Deeping for over eight years, and recently became Chairman of the Council and a very proud holder of the title, Mayor of Market Deeping.

3) Which two characters, (alive or not), would you most enjoy sharing a meal with and why? Neil Armstrong – I would like to hear first-hand of his exploration of space and the moon. Sir Winston Churchill – I am sure this iconic man could tell a good tale or two. 4) How would you describe yourself in just five words? Level-headed, comic, good father and husband, dedicated. 5) If there was one thing which you could change about the Deepings, what would it be and why? There could be a much better use of our natural water way. Imagine punting on the Welland! 6) What advice would you give to a 16 year old you? Follow your dreams, enjoy your childhood and explore.

Once a victim is convinced that they are due a rebate for having been in the wrong tax bracket, the fraudster tells them that, in order to receive the rebate, they will need to pay an administration fee in advance; the payment they ask for varies between £60 - £350. The victim provides the details and makes the payment, but then is no longer able to make contact with the person they spoke to on the phone. When they phone their council about the rebate, the council will confirm that they know nothing about it and that they have been contacted by fraudsters. Protect yourself from vishing: • Your local council will never phone out-of-the-blue to discuss a council tax rebate - if you receive a call of this nature, put the phone down straight away. • No legitimate organisation will ask you to pay an advanced fee in order receive owed money; so never give them your card details. • If you think you have been a victim of fraud, hang up the phone and, prior to making another call to report it, wait five minutes to clear the line as fraudsters sometimes keep the line open. Then call your bank or card issuer to report the fraud. Where it is possible, use a different phone line to make the phone call. To report a fraud and receive a police crime reference number, call Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or use their online fraud reporting tool at www.actionfraud.police.uk/report_fraud

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Mark Sherwood feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have

struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Bourne & the surrounding villages and Mark is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal

satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much

a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Mark a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

The proud, stone building on Abbey Road, much closer to the town centre, and formerly Ulyatt’s sports shop, is now the home of NFU Mutual, a national insurer with over 900,000 customers, using their 300 local branches nationwide. NFU Mutual have been a key player in the insurance world for over a century, “an integral part of the British countryside”, and modestly, claiming to be “big on local presence”. The Bourne offices are fresh, airy and welcoming, and the impressive engraved plate glass embellishment, featuring two examples of arguably Bourne’s finest creation, the BRM racing car, lend weight to their claim to be a local business, caring for their locals. Add to that the blend of experience and youth of the enthusiastic, dedicated staff, and this thread of “locals” is echoed. Senior “Agent of the NFU”, Sue Green, has been twenty-three years in the business, her business partner/ son Alister eight years.

NFU Mutual’s core business has four main strands, namely Personal Insurance (Home, Motor and Equine), Business Insurance, Investments and Pensions, and Risk Management Services. They are pleased to be able to operate an “open office” policy, which enables the customer to be seen without an appointment.

The highly sought-after “Which? Award for Best Insurance Provider 2015” has recently been won by NFU Mutual, and not for the first time. Here then, we have an acclaimed, highly successful insurance business, familiar with the demands of its clientele in the local area and now located in Bourne town centre.

“The move to the new premises has already seen an increase in business”, commented Alister Green. “We are closer to our customers and have a better understanding of their needs and requirements.” 20

Where in the World to say “I Do”. Even though it’s only October, planning a romantic break in the future is an amazing Christmas or Valentine’s gift, plus it gives you both something to look forward to! If you’re thinking of popping the question this Christmas or on Valentine’s Day, then let me inspire you with my top ten romantic destinations to get down on one knee…

Magical Morocco - Just a few

hours flight from the UK and you can be in the colourful country of Morocco, where a stay at the luxurious Kasbah Tamadot will wow your other half. Owned and run by Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Limited Edition, the resort oozes romance at every turn. The Berber Tents are particularly special for couples.

Romance in Venice - Venice has

been the first choice for star-crossed lovers for centuries, with its picturesque waterways, winding streets and sumptuous dining. Wend your way to the city aboard the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express for an experience neither of you will ever forget; boasting serious old school glamour.

The city of love -Few places in the

world have the association with love and romance as the French capital, Paris. Though some may think a proposal here is clichéd, others will revel in the timeless tale of having said ‘yes’ at the top of the Eiffel Tower. Stay at the Mandarin Oriental Paris for added luxury, first-class service and the perfect Parisian location.

Ring shopping at Tiffany’s, New York -Take your love on a walk

Proposal in paradise - Renowned the world over for its ultimate luxury indulgence, Per AQUUM’s Huvafen Fushi in the Maldives is a first-class spot to ask that all-important question. For serious romance, ask our Concierge to arrange a private Champagne picnic on a secluded sand bank for you and your loved one.

A walk on the beach -Who could say no to being whisked off to Jamaica for a romantic proposal?! If you’re thinking of asking your partner to marry you, then I suggest a stay at Round Hill Hotel; where the oceanfront rooms have been designed by Ralph Lauren, and the beachside dining offers dishes to tantalize even the most discerning of palates.

Italian amore - Everything about

Chocoholics favourite -As island

Get hitched! - If you just can’t wait to say ‘I do’, then how about popping the question in Las Vegas followed by an elopement-style wedding in the famous city?! I suggest a stay at the fabulous Bellagio where you can enjoy luxurious first class service right on the strip. Don’t forget to take a helicopter ride over the Grand Canyon during your stay…it’s a romantic ‘must’!

around Central Park, enjoy dinner at the legendary Rainbow Room and then head to the top of the Rockerfeller to pop the question. Stay at The Carlyle, A Rosewood Hotel for a superb New York stay, and take the short twenty minute stroll to Tiffany’s.

romance goes, Saint Lucia is famous for being one of the most loved-up in the world! If your sweetheart has a sweet tooth, then take a look at Boucan; a hotel in the island’s oldest plantation, Rabot Estate, and the cocoa behind Hotel Chocolat. The restaurant here boasts stunning views and delicious fine fare.

On top of the world - Iconic,

dramatic and super luxurious, Dubai’s Burj Al Arab is the place to see and be seen. For spectacular views and delicious cocktails, head to the Skyview Bar for a proposal both of you will never forget, preceded by dinner at Al Mahara with its floor-to-ceiling aquarium and exquisite seafood menu.

Let me help you create a wonderfully romantic time away. I take the time to get to really know you so I can help you find an amazing holiday which is right for you….

Goat’s cheese moussaka

| Food

Just so many interesting flavours go into the making of a moussaka, and the combination of aubergine, minced beef and goat’s cheese, seems a perfect fit. This is a dish that takes time to prepare and cook, but you will be well rewarded with a fantastic tasting dish.

Method

To make the béchamel sauce

1. Pre-heat the oven to 190°C / gas 5. 2. In a large pan, cook the onions in the olive oil for 2-3 minutes until soft but not coloured; then add the beef and cook until it has browned. Drain off the excess fat from the frying pan. 3. Stir in the garlic, cinnamon, chilli and thyme. Cook for one minute before adding the chopped tomatoes and oregano. Simmer for about 45 minutes to one hour, season with salt and pepper, stirring every so often. 4. Place the sliced aubergines on a baking tray, drizzle with olive oil, season with a little salt and pepper, and pop into the oven until nicely browned turning once.

1. Melt the goat’s butter in a medium saucepan, stir in the flour, remove from heat and gradually stir in the goat’s milk, return to a low heat and cook for five minutes, stirring continuously until the sauce thickens. Then remove from the heat. 2. Stir in 100g of the goat’s cheese, chopped parsley and egg yolks. Season with salt and pepper. To Assemble 1. Cover the base of an oven-proof dish, approx 25cm x 20cm, with the mince. Top with the aubergine slices, then the cheese sauce. Finally scatter over the last of the goat’s cheese, sprinkle with paprika and bake for 30-40 minutes until golden brown. 2. Serve with a mixed salad, and warm crusty bread

4 tbsp olive oil and a further 100ml 1 large onion, finely chopped 600g minced beef 3 garlic cloves, chopped and deseeded 1 red chilli, chopped ¼ tsp cinnamon 2 x 400g tinned chopped tomatoes 1 tbsp oregano, chopped 1 tsp fresh thyme 3 aubergines, sliced into 1cm rings For the sauce: 50g goat’s butter 50g plain flour 1 litre goat’s milk 150g goat’s cheese, coarsely grated 1 tbsp parsley, chopped 2 egg yolks Sprinkling of paprika

| Legal Corner advice from Double and Megson

Is it really worth making a will? Double and Megson have the answer. Life is full of twists and turns, and none of us can be sure what the future holds. That’s why creating a will makes good sense. It’s no longer seen as something just for the elderly or ill, but simply part of sound financial planning for any family or individual.

Approximately 60% of the UK population do not have a will. Yet a valid will is one of the most important financial arrangements you can make during your lifetime, and could save your family and loved ones a great deal of hassle and heartache when you die. What happens if I don’t have a will? Without a will, your assets, such as your house, your bank accounts, savings and investments, even your personal possessions such as jewellery, your car and anything else of value, could be distributed according to the law, rather than your wishes. Why is it important to make a will? Getting married, entering a civil partnership, or having children should all be trigger points for getting your will written. If you aren’t married, but setting up home with your partner, it’s probably even more important, as your unmarried partner won’t get any of your estate without a will that leaves it to them.

If you and your partner have children, you really need to think about who will look after your children should something happen to both of you. Unless you appoint a guardian in your will, no one will be legally entitled to take care of your children, and an application would have to be made to the court. If you are not married and have no children, your estate could pass to your brothers or sisters or even your parents, which may not be what you want. If no immediate or more distant relatives are traced, your estate could even end up being passed to the government. Using a professional Solicitors who specialise in will-writing are the people best qualified to write and administer a will. They are qualified and will meet with you faceto-face and talk through exactly what it is that you want your will to achieve, and advise you on the best course of action in your particular circumstances. Most importantly though, solicitors are regulated unlike other will-writing organisations.

Bourne Deeping Hockey Club‘Dragons’ Juniors:-

Bourne Deeping Hockey Club has a large and ever-expanding junior section, where all abilities are welcome. The club recently achieved Sport England’s “ClubsFirst” accreditation, awarded by England Hockey. The club operates in a safe, ethical manner and has been recognised for these qualities. They are welcoming and friendly, and will listen to your child’s developmental needs and wishes. You will not be made to feel uncomfortable … nor out of your depth!

· Do you play hockey at school and find a PE lesson to be never long enough? · Are you new to the area and looking to continue with hockey and be part of a club? · Have you never played hockey before but would like to take up a new sport? · Do you want to keep fit and enjoy a sport whilst meeting lots of friends along the way?

Training Sessions: When? Saturday during term time - 9.00 -10.30am Where? Deepings Astro Pitch, Linchfield Rd, Deeping St. James (PE6 8EP) How much? £3 per session

Throughout the club, there is a commitment to provide a pathway of progression for our junior players, to develop through the teams from beginner level right up to county level hockey and into our First XIs playing high level senior hockey.”

Seniors:BDHC is composed of six men’s teams (The 1st X1 play in the East League Division 1) and two ladies’ teams. As with the junior section of the club, the seniors is ever-expanding too. The club is diverse and prides itself on being allencompassing, having a high degree of respect and understanding. For high level players our Senior mixed team u18, u16 and u14 are all entered into the national competitions annually, quite a challenge. Teams mix willingly, often calling on players to step up or add strength and structure to a team below. There are often mixed friendlies too, so men are not a completely separate entity to the ladies of the club. There is a high standard of coaching, and training is focused, fastpaced and person-specific. Matches are competitive and the club ensures fairness in selection and match-play duration. BDHC’s home ground is at

Arthur Mellows Village College, Glinton, which offers a state-of-the-art Astroturf pitch and superb facilities. Subs and match fees are reasonably priced, kit can be purchased at a reduced price through a local supplier and, for away games, shared lifts keep costs to a minimum. Everyone is friendly, helpful and welcoming. More importantly, (for some!), there is the social side of hockey...’teas’, following matches; socials, such as bowling, dining out and drinks; as well as the End of Season and the Christmas party. “Time to quit smoking”

M

any people ask me if hypnotherapy can help them give up smoking, well hypnotherapy has the reputation for being the best way to quit smoking available. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can help someone who is determined to quit smoking for good by using your imagination to create a non-smoking future which is positive, empowering and allows you to take control not only of your smoking habits but of your life.

Benefits of stopping smoking are amazing – • H ave a decreased chance of having a heart attack after 24 hours of stopping. • No longer be taking in 4,500 cell destroying chemicals • You will learn to control cravings • Have more energy • Learn to control stress • Your skin will improve its appearance • You will feel fitter and healthier • Reduce the risk of developing illness • You will enjoy the taste of food more • Improve your breathing and fitness levels • You will feel happier, more confident and in more control • Improve fertility levels • Save money and spend money on things which can improve your quality of life rather than undermine it • You will no longer smell of smoke • You will no longer endanger those around you

The stop smoking hypnotherapy session works by first explaining why the brain fools us into thinking it is acceptable to smoke. The hypnosis part of the stop smoking treatment is a key stage to cementing the change during which the client experiences around 45 minutes of hypnosis. During the hypnosis process the subconscious mind effectively “rewires” itself to help the person’s willpower and commitment to smoking cessation.

The stop smoking hypnotherapy formula works regardless of how many cigarettes you smoke or how long you have been smoking. The treatment is tailored to you as an individual so you can get the best out of your life and helps you to realise your full potential, in a relaxed comfortable environment.

are not words usually and their associated at with of eve theCare Homes!

Rose Lodge Residential Care Home, Market Deeping, is an example of how style and elegance have been incorporated in to the development of a care home. With a £3 million investment from Country Court Care, Rose Lodge has been built from traditional stone and brick, sympathetically replicating its surrounding Grade 2-listed heritage, whilst incorporating state of the art design and functionality. Samantha Lord, the owner of Samantha Lord Interior Design, was commissioned with designing Rose Lodge. Her brief was to capture an environment which exudes elegance and comfort, which can be enjoyed by residents without feeling like they are in a care home. The thirty-one en-suite bedrooms are presented to a high specification, with the gold rooms offering little extras like bath robes and tea and coffee making facilities. The home is spacious and gives the impression of your being in a fivestar boutique hotel. Supported by a highly trained team of managers and staff, residents can be assured of the best personalised care in stunning surroundings. On September 10th, Rose Lodge held an Open Day, which was attended by many local members of the Market Deeping community, and the Mayor of Deeping, Wayne Lester, and Mr Kachra (Chairman of Country Court Care) cut the ribbon. 32

D I S C O V E R I N G

Many guests likened the home to the Ritz Hotel with a piano, orangery and beautiful gardens, complete with olive trees and pergolas. Country Court Care is also winner of an award by Health Investor for “Residential Care Provider of the Year 2015”. Country Court Care was founded in 1983 by Roshan Bogha and her brother in-law Abdul Kachra (Chairman of Country Court Care), who decided to purchase their first care home. With Roshan’s background in nursing and Abdul’s business background, this was a good fit to start their venture. They went from strength to strength, transforming the homes they purchased and acquiring struggling care homes, improving the facilities and care.

10 top tips for back care 1.

Keep moving and stretching.

2. Take regular exercise. 3. Take frequent breaks between repetitive tasks and vary the rhythm. 4. Change position – avoid ‘computer hump’. 5. Pace yourself when the work is heavy e.g. gardening. 6. | Police Patrol by Bourne’s Sergeant 503 Rick Mosley

Sergeant Mosley’s Musings Domestic Abuse Domestic abuse is a crime that cuts across all social, cultural and religious boundaries. It has far reaching consequences for victims, witnesses, their families and the wider community. Nationally, one in four women will experience domestic abuse at some point in their lives, as will one in six men, with the police receiving a call about domestic abuse every minute in the UK. Two women are murdered every week in England and Wales, at the hands of their partners or ex-partners. Domestic abuse is described as any incident, or pattern of incidents, of controlling, coercive or threatening behaviour, violence or abuse between those aged 16 or over who are, or have been, intimate partners or family members, regardless of gender or sexuality. This can encompass, but is not limited to, psychological, physical, sexual, financial and/or emotional.

Making the decision to seek help or leave an abusive relationship is difficult. Remember:

This definition includes ‘honour’-based violence, female genital mutilation (FGM) and forced marriage, and it is clear that victims are not confined to one gender or ethnic group.

• You can’t change your partner’s behaviour: he/ she needs to realise they have a problem and to seek help.

Domestic abuse can take place anywhere, not just in the home. Research has shown that it is rarely a one-off event. Abuse tends to happen more and more over time - each time getting more serious. Whatever the extent of the violence, the abuse almost always leaves those suffering it to feel frightened, isolated, humiliated or ashamed.

If you suffer from or witness any form of domestic abuse, please report it. To contact Lincolnshire Police you can: Call 999 in an emergency, for a crime in progress, or if you and your children are in immediate danger. Call 101 on any other occasion.

• You are not alone: domestic abuse can affect people in all kinds of relationships. • You are not to blame: someone using violence and abuse always makes a choice about the ways they behave.

• You are in danger if you ignore the abuse: abuse tends to be more severe and happens more often over time. • Take action, do not remain isolated and report what is happening: get help from someone you trust, or you can contact an organisation that offers information and support. Thinking about leaving and making the decision to leave can be a long process. Planning doesn’t necessarily mean you have to carry it through immediately, or at all. Either way, it may help you to consider all your options. Making a safety plan may help you to feel more in control of the situation and give you the confidence to take action to protect yourself and your children. For more information, including making a safety plan, take a look at http://www.lincolnshire.gov.uk/ domestic-abuse and, for teenagers, take a look at http://thisisabuse.direct.gov.uk/.

Text 07761911287. Typetalk 01522 558263. Or finally you can pop into your local police station. The safety of you and your children will be our priority. The police now follow a clear and consistent policy in cases of domestic abuse, and we are there to help you.

Lincolnshire Police take domestic abuse very seriously. We will do everything we can to protect you and your children and bring the abuser to justice. Don’t suffer in silence. To report a crime, call 101 or 999 if in progress. Crimestoppers 0800 555 111

Creating & Synchronising Playlists to your iPhone/iPad using iTunes Click on Selected playlists, artists, albums and genres

With apologies this month to readers that do not use iTunes for their Apple devices, but I’m covering this topic as it is one of the most common questions I’m asked, and seems to be widely misunderstood. The first thing to do is to install iTunes on your PC, and use your main charging cable to connect your iPhone/iPad to your PC’s USB port. When connected, a new icon will appear in iTunes (as shown circled). We’ll assume that you already have music loaded in iTunes, either from your CD collection or purchased. The next thing to do is create a Playlist.

Click File – New - Playlist

Your music library will now appear on the left (sorted by album, artist or song) and the new Playlist will be on the right. Initially, the Playlist will be empty but you can start to populate it by dragging music with your left mouse button from the left panel to the right. Continue until you have created the playlist that you would like, filling it with your favourite music that you want to take ‘on the road’. Once this is done you will have a custom playlist saved on your PC within iTunes. Now, we need to ‘synchronise’ this with your iPhone/iPad to copy that music to your device.

iTunes will now create a Playlist frame and you will be prompted to click Edit Playlist to add your music to the new playlist. You can call the playlist almost anything you wish, but we’ll leave this example called simply ‘Playlist’.

Click on the icon that popped up when you connected your iPhone/iPad to display your device in iTunes.

Click Edit Playlist

The right panel should now show Sync Music at the top and options below.

Next Click on the Music folder under this device

IT Support and Training for Home Computer Users and Small Businesses 01778 590632 07894 659479 www.litespc.co.uk info@litespc.co.uk

38

D I S C O V E R I N G

In the first section you should see a list of Playlists, those created by you and a number of playlists automatically created by iTunes. In the example, our ‘Playlist’ is shown at the bottom as it is the newest. (Note: I have another customised playlist available in the list shown called ‘Car’.) Click in the box to the left of Playlist This notifies iTunes that we want to send this playlist to our phone/tablet. Click Sync (at the bottom right of this iTunes window)

iTunes will now synchronise that playlist and copy it to your iPhone/ iPad. How long this takes depends on the number of tracks that you have selected. You can monitor progress at the top of iTunes.

When in the Sync window, you should also note that you can not only choose to synchronise playlist but also bands, genres and albums. You can also ‘mix’ these; so, for example, you could select a playlist AND select a particular album or band. You can also select multiple playlists (so I could tick Car and Playlist in the example and both would be copied over).

| Will & Probate Services

by Nick Ash, Managing Director

Home in the Sun

What happens when you die? If, like me, you have a home in the sun, mine’s in Spain, you might well have made a will that deals with what happens to that property if you die. If you have, then, as of last month, you need to review it, and probably update it. The reason is that the Brussels IV regulations on cross-border inheritance came into force on August 17th 2015. If you haven’t, then you need to do one today. Call us on 01778 382723 and we will discuss what you need to do. So what difference does Brussels IV make to me? Previously, a property in an EU state was subject to the inheritance tax and heirship rules of the country that it was situated in... a French property subject to French inheritance law, an Italian property subject to Italian law etc. This potentially restricted the people you could pass your assets to, and could lead you to pay inheritance tax at different points and rates to that you would pay in the UK. As of August 17th 2015, this has changed, and you can now elect to have your estate treated as if it was situated in the country of your nationality. This will make a difference to how your estate is administered after your death, it will affect your tax planning and could make a difference to who will inherit your property. In short, if you have a European property, be it a holiday home or somewhere you have retired to permanently, you need to review your will.

Call us 01778 382723 to discuss.

D&D Creative Faces D&D Creative Faces, a mother and daughter owned business, have been trading since May 2015 and have been very busy, creating faces for school fetes, parties and corporate events. As well as helping Bourne 2 Play raise funds at the Bourne Festival this summer, and being present at local summer fetes and children’s parties, they were also invited to face paint at The Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials for the whole four days, which was amazing. Dee and Donna created the business out of their love of art and children, and saw a little gap in the market to provide the service in the local area. They both attended a face painting training course, are fully insured with public liability insurance, and are DBS checked. Dee is also First Aid qualified. They believe in a strong cleanliness regime and use a new, clean sponge on every child; the brushes are washed in a water solution that contains an antibacterial solution to avoid cross contamination; and the paints are all EU and FDA approved. They provide up-to-date face painting art, such as Frozen and Minions, but can always provide the favourites too.

Hallowe’en is a night of celebration, every year, on October 31st. The word Hallowe’en is a shortening of “All Hallows’ Evening”, (the day before All Hallows’ Day). Traditional activities include trick-ortreating, bonfires, costume parties, visiting “haunted houses” and carving pumpkins or “jack-o-lanterns”.

What’s that all about then? To raise funds for the Amazon Children’s Unit at the Peterborough City Hospital

Hallowe’en has its origins in the ancient Celtic festival known as Samhain (pronounced "sah-win"). The festival of Samhain is a celebration of the end of the harvest season in Gaelic culture. Samhain was a time used by the ancient pagans to take stock of supplies and prepare for winter. The ancient Gaels believed that, on October 31, the boundaries between the worlds of the living and the dead overlapped and the deceased would come back to life and cause havoc, such as sickness or damaged crops. The festival would frequently involve bonfires. It is believed that the fires attracted insects to the area which in turn attracted bats to the area. These are additional attributes of the history of Hallowe’en. Masks and costumes were worn in an attempt to mimic the evil spirits or appease them. “Trick-or-treating” is an activity for children on or around Hallowe’en, in which they proceed from house to house in costumes, asking for treats such as confectionery with the question, "Trick or treat?" The "trick" part of "trick or treat" is a threat to play a trick on the homeowner or his property, if no treat is given. Trick-or-treating is one of the main traditions of Hallowe’en. It has become socially expected that if you live in a neighbourhood with children, you should purchase treats in preparation for trick-or-treaters.

Chihuahuas and Chickens As you get older in life and you have had more experiences, there are some conclusions about living that you come to. At 56 years of age my conclusion is that all households should have at least one chihuahua and some chickens. As this article is mainly about chickens, I will only give a brief reason for having a chihuahua. They are intelligent, full of character, extremely cute and portable! The fantastic thing about chickens is not only do they make great pets but they also give you eggs. I have been keeping chickens for the last eight years. I am continually fascinated by their behaviour and the noises they make. They are great free range in the garden and will eat most of your garden pests. However there are certain plants that they also love so you either have to protect these plants or choose not to grow them! I was initially surprised by how carniverous chickens are. As well eating insects they will steal the dog’s bones to get the marrow and other bits and pieces. Our original chickens are quite old now. We had 3 left of the original 6 and they had pretty well stopped laying eggs. 2 of these are Buff Orpingtons which we call the “galleons” due to their size. We decided it was time to get some more. When we were selecting the chickens we wanted, the person catching them for us was being harassed by a rather fine cockerel. We ended up taking him and 6 other chickens home with us.

He takes his duties very seriously, running up and down keeping check on his harem. Luckily we have understanding neighbours (one has a cockerel of their own) and he generally doesn’t start crowing until about 6.00am. It is a sound that all my family love and most times does not wake us up. I appreciate that not everybody will want or be able to keep a cockerel but it has been a great experience for us. One of our new chickens is a little white hen we have called Happy. She follows us everywhere, talking to us as she goes. She tries to help us with the weeding. Recently she followed us into the house and settled down on the settee!

It was quite incredible the difference having a cockerel around made to all the chickens. They all seem much more relaxed and happy. The old girls came back into lay and he keeps our dogs and cats in order.

Join the chicken revolution!

fter an initial outlay to buy A chicken accommodation, they are easy and quite inexpensive to keep and 6 chickens will keep even quite a large family in eggs.

| Your Finances

by Richard Ash, Director - Liberty Partnership Ltd

Providing advice and guidance in respect of long-term care planning When you, or a loved one, are faced with the prospect of long-term care, you will inevitably have many questions: Where and how will care be provided? Who can I turn to for support and more information? How much will I have to pay? Will I need to use my savings and/or my pension income? Will I need to sell my house?

It is highly likely that you will be concerned and keen to understand how you will be assessed. The Department of Health issues guidelines to Local Authorities, and it will be your Local Authority who will interpret how those rules are to be applied. In England, Local Authorities are only expected to fund residential care where an individual’s capital is less than £23,250. However, income will also be taken into consideration where an individual’s capital assets are between £14,250 and £23,250. Certain assets may be disregarded in this assessment, which could include your property, personal possessions, certain types of investments and certain trust arrangements. Knowing your options and some careful planning can prepare you well and ensure you make an informed decision regarding your finances. Many thousands of people are in a similar position, and there are a variety of strategies to help you pay for your long-term care. The guidelines set out by the Department of Health are complex and it can be difficult to find the answers to your questions. It is essential that you take professional advice to achieve a clear understanding of all options and strategies that are available to you or your loved one.

So, if you would like to receive long-term care advice and arrange a free initial consultation, please contact our office today on 01778 342291 or e-mail: advice@liberty-partnership.co.uk.

| Motoring - monthly advice from Tom Ingram

Good driving in the Deepings I keep seeing on my driving lessons in and around the Deepings a rather attractive looking black and white BMW i8, and an equally eye-catching Audi R8. And in both cases, they are being driven really well, which is so nice to observe. Being in the driving industry, I tend to spot good driving when I see it, and it takes great discipline to drive cars with the amount of power as these two examples have, with the care and attention that the owners are displaying. And boy is it needed by all drivers as we navigate our way around. Take Godsey Lane as just one example. As you travel towards Tesco and you approach the zebra crossing with the parks on your left. Obscured from view by the hedge, is the entrance to the bike park, immediately next to the zebra crossing. What a lethal combination!

Learn to drive in for only

Granted, there is plenty of signage with warnings, but can you imagine driving up that way, not being ‘switched on’ to the very real possibility of a kid coming out of the park on a bike, wanting to zip across that zebra crossing? That is just one example, I could name many, but it demonstrates how necessary it is for all of us to drive to the conditions, not the maximum speed limits, and recognise that when our “vision” goes down, so should our speed, so as to buy us some time for effective observations. I very much look forward to seeing some more lovely driving from the drivers of the BMW i8 and Audi R8 on my travels! BIG TOM Driving School BOOKINGS: 07894 262 718

The Edinburgh Fringe

Where the One-liner is King This time of the year sees a rash of jokes vying for the annual accolade of “Funniest Joke of the Fringe Festival”, and 2015 sees Peterborough’s Darren Walsh taking top spot. His show “Punderbolt” included the following: “I just deleted all the German names off my phone. It’s Hans free.” Understandably delighted, he commented, “What a punderful feeling!” Feast yourself on, or cringe if you’d rather, at the winners from the last five years:

2014 “I’ve decided to sell my Hoover… well, it was just collecting dust.” – Tim Vine.

2011 “I needed a password, eight characters long, so I picked Snow White and the Seven Dwarves.” – Nick Helm. 2010 “I’ve just been on a once-in-alifetime holiday. I’ll tell you what, never again.” – Tim Vine. I couldn’t end this without including my favourite, from this year, from stand-up comedian, Masai Graham: “What’s the difference between a hippo and a Zippo? One is really heavy and the other’s a little lighter” UGH!

2013 “I heard a rumour that Cadbury is bringing out an oriental chocolate bar. Could be a Chinese Wispa.” – Rob Auton. 2012 “You know who really gives kids a bad name? Posh and Becks.” – Stewart Francis. October 2015 | D I S C O V E R I N G

Moving house is stressful. I am not sure there is anyone out there that would disagree with that statement. We were planning a move from London to the Peterborough area for a while. Our place went on the market in January with a view to a move in the summer. With our little girl starting school in September we had found somewhere and it was all going smoothly. Then it all unravelled quite dramatically and we were facing the prospect of losing our buyers. The thought of starting again with a much shorter timeframe filled us with dread. After a late night of tears and renewed property searching we made contact with Matt and Ryan at Winkworth in Deeping. They understood our situation and the distance that we were travelling to view properties. To be perfectly honest they were a breath of fresh air and gave us renewed vigour. We had to take a day off work, jump on a train and view properties quickly, Matt picked us up from the station, drove us to the house and even dropped us off at our next viewing. After 4 properties we were about to head home but phoned Matt and asked for a second viewing there and then. He re-arranged his diary to accommodate us and met us at the property. We put an offer in the next day. We love our new house and our new life. Our little girl starts school in September. Basically, we can’t recommend these boys enough. Our estate agents in London commented on how good they were. I’d go back to them in a heartbeat. ” Mr & Mrs Bundock, Deeping St James

I would just like to thank the team for your help with both the sale and purchase of our house. From start to finish you have been absolutely professional and extremely knowledgeable. Your correspondence were always swift, well laid out, and made it easy for us to follow what was happening. We could not fault the service from Winkworth and would absolutely recommend you to everyone. In fact, if we hear of anyone wanting to sell, we immediately tell them to come and see you.” Mr & Mrs Hines, Deeping St James

Our business grows best, when others speak for us... If you’re thinking of selling, then customer care should be high on your priorites www.winkworth.co.uk
