Welcome to our November edition...

Deeping

It’s getting closer by the day, and I’m not talking about the ticklish thirty days ahead for us ladies, as some of our chaps let loose that moustache once more during “Movember”. No, I’m talking turkey, trees, tinsel and trimming-up, as the whole wonderful Christmas season gathers momentum once more. This month’s issue is filled with local restaurants and hostelries offering all

manner of attractions for the festive weeks ahead, so remember to book early for your special events.

I was amused to see that Grantham, one-time “Britain’s most boring town”, is now being heralded as Britain’s “Viagara capital”, with more prescriptions for the drug being issued than for any other town. No doubt, the good folk of our South Kesteven neighbours would have beaten off stiff competition from many competitors for this accolade!

special festive meal, either in the weeks leading up to Christmas or on the day itself.

The Christmas preparations are already well under way in many places and we feature a number of local restaurants and hostelries this month, all more than capable of giving you everything for that

I hope you all find this month’s issue entertaining and useful, as we start to think about the Christmas period, just around the corner. Thank you everyone for your continuing support and advice. Feedback does matter to us, we always listen and strive to make your favourite freebie even more of a “must-have”!

C la ire x “Discovering Deeping” is fast becoming a favourite amongst the residents of our area. One of the regularly voiced comments is that we are providing such a wide range of most interesting and very useful information. November’s issue is no exception. Dip in now and you can discover about the Canary Islands as a winter holiday destination; whether or not your pets need a toothbrush; the benefits of acupuncture; the “Bank of Mum and Dad”; tax benefits of a pension; the “rescued” railway signal box in Deeping St. James …. to name but just a few. Enjoy the read!

“The Beautiful Game”

– It’s never too early to start, with Tiny Tykes.

Tiny Tykes is an innovative programme, created by childcare specialists, to introduce children, aged from eighteen months to five years, to the basic skills of soccer. It allows children to explore and learn in a relaxed and fun environment whilst promoting social, physical and emotional development through the medium of soccer. The Tiny Tykes curriculum has been created to promote and enhance the key areas of child development with a major focus on fun!! The programme is broken down into two modules relating to a child’s age; Cubs for ages eighteen months to three years, and Lions for ages four to six years.

“Richard’s sessions are fantastic. The way he creates a story through physical play really engages all of the children, both boys and girls. Each week, the children really look forward to him coming in and I couldn’t speak highly enough of the programme.” Gloria Sparrow, (Manager of Treetops Caterpillar Nursery).

Richard Pickering, Tiny Tykes Peterborough’s owner, started up the franchise in October 2013 and has seen many children pass through the programme. “It is fantastic to see how much the children can develop and progress in such a short space of time. Some of the children have now been coming to the sessions for nearly two years and the progress they have made, not only physically, but socially as well, has been excellent.” Richard runs sessions all across Peterborough, covering everything from school and nursery sessions to parties and weekend sessions. If you would like your child, your school or your nursery to join in the fun, then please get in touch. Richard will be more than happy to answer any questions you have and look to book you into a session soon.

Join Thorpe Hall Hospice’s Lights of Love carol concert Carols, fireworks and mulled wine will all feature at Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice’s traditional Lights of Love concert this Christmas. But the centrepiece will, as usual, be the giant Christmas tree decked out with handwritten messages of love, remembrance and inspiration.

of Peterborough Concert Band providing musical accompaniment for the carol singing. Peterborough Gospel Choir will also take to the microphones as will young bagpipe player Kathryn Johnston. The concert will be rounded off with a firework finale at 7pm. During the event, which is free to attend, Thorpe Hall’s Chapel will be open and the hospice’s books of remembrance will be available to view.

For thousands of people across the area, Lights of Love has become a key event in the festive calendar, offering the chance to take time out of the hustle and bustle of Christmas preparation to remember loved ones.

Events fundraiser Jo Killick said: “The Lights of Love event is a favourite with so many people who see it as the start of their festive celebrations. It’s a lovely way to remember and celebrate the lives of special people with family and friends.

This year’s carol concert will take place on Sunday, The Lights of Love firework finale is the perfect ending to Thorpe Hall’s open air carol concert December 13 in the gardens of Thorpe Hall, in “Once again we’ve got some Longthorpe, Peterborough, with the mansion house brilliant musicians to lead the singing – the City of as the backdrop. Doors will open at 5pm with the Peterborough Concert Band and bagpipe player carol singing beginning at 5.30pm. Kathryn Johnston. But of course we’d like all our BBC Radio Cambridgeshire presenter Jane Smith will compere the event with the City

guests to bring their best voices with them – along with scarves, gloves and hats to keep warm.”

Market Deeping Town Council Christmas Market 2015 Using the backdrop of the historic Market Place, the Market Deeping Town Council Christmas Market will be held on Sunday November 29th. This year, there will be many traders at the market selling a wide range of goods from cheeses, meats, and locally brewed beer to jewellery, paintings, gift ideas and much, much more. As well as the traditional market and craft stalls, there will be plenty of entertainment on the stage from local groups and schools, along with the Junior Town Crier competition. Any aspiring young Criers wishing to take part are invited to apply to the Town Council. The day starts at 10am when Santa arrives on his sleigh and the market is declared open. As

the festivities get into full swing, a fun fair provides additional excitement for the children and there is a variety of food and drink for the whole family to enjoy. The local shops, pubs and restaurants will be open to give all visitors a warm welcome and enhance the market experience. Entertainment will be on the main stage throughout the day, with Keith Dalton as the guest presenter. Then, as the sun sets at 4.30pm, the Mayor of Market Deeping, Councillor Wayne Lester, will launch the countdown and switch on the town’s festive lights.

The Town Council opens its Remembrance Gardens on Riverside Park each year for the two weeks surrounding Remembrance Sunday. We invite members of our community to plant a Remembrance Cross as a memorial to a life lost in service to show that we will never forget the sacrifice made by so many young and not so young men and women on our behalf. We ask that members of the public take the opportunity to show they do care and remember by planting a cross in our Remembrance Garden.

Deeping St Nicholas Parish Church

T

he Parochial Church Council (P.C.C.) are pleased to announce an Open Evening at the church on Tuesday, November 3rd at 7.00pm, to celebrate the completion of the new and much-awaited heating system. Since the loss of the village hall, six public houses, the post office and many other facilities, the P.C.C. have been working hard to make sure the church can fill this gap as a community building, for all to use. The last six years have seen a new lighting system, draught proofing works, redecoration, repairs to the windows, and work to the roof and guttering. The final part of this programme of improvements was to upgrade the heating system, which is now in place, installed by Chris Dunphy Ecclesiastical Heating Limited, a company with an impressive list of churches which they have improved with their systems. There are now fifteen radiators

around the building and a ‘state of the art’ boiler and control system, which is permanently available to provide heat, keeping the building at a minimum of 10 degrees centigrade. When the building is needed for a function or meeting, the controls can be programmed to provide the exact temperature required for an exact period of time - an extremely efficient way to heat the building. None of this would have been possible without the help of the following fund-raisers: WASTE RECYCLING ENVIRONMENTAL LIMITED (WREN) (£41,952). THE DEEPING FEN WIND FARM COMMITTEE (£17,138.50). GARFIELD WESTON (£2,442.52, as well as £2,557.48 to be used for future repairs). THE DEEPING ST NICHOLAS SENIOR CITIZEN’S COMMITTEE, (who donated funds to cover postage, stationery and printing).

The P.C.C. are also using this Open Evening to thank all of those in the community who wrote and supported the project. Thanks also go to MP, John Hayes, and the Parish, District and County Councillors for their invaluable and direct support. The church is now in a position to offer all members of the community a warm and comfortable building for their use. The Youth Group meet every week and the Senior Citizens have a Whist Drive every fortnight to raise funds for local charities. It is also open for private parties, workshops, wakes and other hires. Sadly, with the recent loss of the vicar, Peter Garland, the P.C.C. have not been able to complete all of the plans, but hopefully, with a new incumbent, will be in a strong position to do so very soon. The P.C.C. would like to welcome you all to this event on November 3rd, where cheese and wine will be provided.

The Leprosy Mission Gifts

Gifts that give twice: Beautiful leather goods crafted in Nepal by leprosy-affected artisans. “For £375 you can provide prosthetic limbs to help people who have lost lower legs as a result of leprosy to walk again.” Visit www.tlmtrading.com

Three reasons to buy this bag: Hope. Dignity. Self-respect. A handmade leather bag is a wonderful thing. A handmade leather bag which supports the families of desperate people like Bhagwati is even better! Leprosy is still a major issue in parts of Asia and people affected by the disease are amongst the poorest and most discriminated against anywhere in the world. It’s a big problem in Nepal, where people are still desperately rebuilding lives and livelihoods after the 2015 earthquake.

Chatadeep-you can help him walk again! He has had both his legs amputated due to untreated leprosy. He has been cured of leprosy and desperately needs prosthetic legs.

Bhagwati’s story:

Gifts for Life: virtual gifts

Bhagwati is a leprosy-affected artisan from Nepal who creates classic, timeless leather bags. Skilled artisans like Bhagwati are a diligent, skilled group making beautiful products to provide themselves with an income. Trading with artisan groups is a positive way to restore their dignity and rehabilitate them into their communities.

We also have a range of Gifts for Life specifically for leprosy-affected people, such as prosthetic limbs. All gifts directly link to the projects where they are most needed, going beyond medical care to restore dignity, hope and independence to lives affected by this cruel disease.

‘Kirtana’ Tan leather handbag. Traditional, satchel- style handbag in tan leather. It has a large front pocket and an inner secure, zipped pocket, with a handy pouch for a smart phone. d e h s i l performance o P wins Alexandra a Bronze award! A

lexandra, who runs the Cowbit Slimming World group every Thursday at 7pm, has been given the ‘Bronze’ status by the national slimming club because of her success in supporting local slimmers to reach their dream weights, improve their health and change their lives. The accolade is awarded to Slimming World Consultants who successfully build a vibrant and dynamic group of around fifty members, and when the service they provide is so good that members keep coming week after week because they’re losing weight beautifully and wouldn’t miss their weekly group for anything. In September 2015, it was the first time Alexandra got “Bronze” for her Cowbit group.

She says: “I am delighted to have received the ‘Bronze’ award on behalf of the Cowbit group. I feel passionately about helping people to transform their lives by losing weight in the same way that I did when I lost over three stone with Slimming World in 2007. Losing weight made me feel happier and healthier and gave me so much more confidence. I became a Consultant because I wanted to share that feeling and help other people to achieve the same success I had myself. Seeing the members in my group– mums, dads, grandmas and young people too – reach their target weight is so rewarding, and receiving this award is just the icing on the cake. “This award belongs to the Cowbit group’s members. They’re the ones who make the group the success that it is with their fabulous commitment, the wonderful support they give each other every week, and, obviously, their impressive weight losses while following Slimming World’s Food Optimising eating plan. Montaz

S

tep off Bourne’s West Street and you’re soon transported to an earlier time, with some extraordinary wooden embellishments surrounding one fireplace, a huge open hearth with carved figures, and a bannister rail and newel posts which are a work of art, (not to mention the two tiny mice on one of the wooden posts in the main eating area). When this building, The Old Monkstone House (AD 1671), was the private home of the late and fondly- remembered Jackie Rayner, (one-time woodwork master at both The Grammar School and The Bourne Secondary Modern School), these, we were told, were his creations. Returning now to savour the delights of its present incumbents, the Montaz Indian restaurant, the memories of dear Jackie flood back!

Contemporary Indian cuisine in one of Bourne’s finest buildings

Today is what counts, and here we find a most appealing mixture of traditional Curry, Balti, Biryani and Tandoori dishes on the menu, but these are augmented by the refreshingly varied “Chef’s Recommendations”, all eleven of them. This is very good quality Indian and Bangladeshi fare, using locally produced meat and vegetables, wherever possible, and the finest spices from the east, with all meals freshly cooked and carefully presented.

The friendly staff, led by the Manager, Juned Ahmed, are helpful and courteous, always happy to advise customers on the various dishes on the menu. The wine list includes several well-priced and highly recommended options, at least three reds and three whites excellent value at less than £15 a bottle.

“delicious and entirely memorable.”

Located in a Grade II-listed building it may be, but that’s where the ambitious Montaz group stop looking to the past.

The extremely popular “Wednesday Night Special”, (four courses for £10.95), and the Sunday Lunch Special succeed in attracting a loyal clientele, week after week. There is a take-away service at Montaz, where a 10% discount on the bill operates, whilst free delivery within a five mile radius can be yours, for that quiet night in, (now that “Strictly” has returned on a Saturday evening!) A function room, catering for up to thirty-five diners, offers a superb venue for that corporate event, birthday celebration or business function, where privacy makes the evening really special. The very old premises, with rustic beams and the carved wooden delights already described, are juxtaposed by modern toilet facilities and air-conditioning throughout. The lasting impression, taken from our recent trip to the Montaz, is a combination of cosy, delicious and entirely memorable.

Escape for some Winter Sun – Try the Canary Islands. As the season has now turned and there is a chill in the air, my thoughts this month turn to a little WINTER SUN. The Canary Islands are part of Spain, and are the ideal holiday spot for those looking for glorious weather, beautiful beaches and swimmable, blue sea.

In February and March, there is the famous carnival for those who are looking for culture, whilst the weather can be positively sun-soaked! The different islands offer a variety of experiences.

The trinity of sun, sea and surf combine beautifully in the Canary Islands, so it’s no surprise that this archipelago has earned its place among beach holiday royalty. Across Tenerife, Gran Canaria and La Palma, millions head to the

islands every year. But besides being home to Spain’s largest national park, a wealth of traditional whitewashed towns and with a fascinating volcanic past, there’s much more to the Canaries than its sun-baked beaches!

With the most equatorial climate of any European destination, the seven islands which make up the Canaries are all incredibly popular with holidaymakers, and for different reasons. From Fuerteventura’s golden sands to the nature trails of La Gomera, Tenerife’s bouncing nightlife to the galactic night skies over La Palma. But the best bit? It’s always so easy to take a step back from the tourist bubble and enjoy an authentic slice of Canary culture and cuisine.

As you might expect from a cluster of islands, water plays a huge part in Canary life. Head to the old town of Puerto de la Cruz and you’ll discover Cesar Manrique’s salt water pools of Lido Martianez – a thrilling complex of pools and fountains. There are also the thrills and spills of Siam Park in Tenerife, a vast waterpark bursting with rides and attractions. But you can head to virtually any coast for crystalclear snorkelling and scuba diving. You might even spot an endangered loggerhead turtle!

Call me today and let me arrange your perfect winter sun break…

The volcanic influences on the Canaries are everywhere, from the black sands of Tenerife’s El Bollullo and Lanzarote’s El Golfo, to Mount Teide – the third largest volcano in the world. Some regions of the Canary Islands have an otherworldly feel, with tortured rock formations, craters and a strong concentration of caves and caverns, but rewards those who make exploration a key feature of their itinerary. If you’re in search of adventure, put Teide National Park top of your list.

Acupuncture – not as mysterious or painful as you might think. Acupuncture is an ancient therapy that modern science is finally beginning to understand and recognise, for its use in helping patients with a wide range of problems. Until recent times, scientists were very sceptical about acupuncture as they didn’t understand how it works. Now, thanks to scan technology and clinical trials, they know that acupuncture points do exist, that areas of the brain respond to specific points, and that it is proven to help many who suffer with migraine, back pain, osteoarthritic pain, anxiety and other problems.

There is no need to worry about the needles either; they are tiny, as fine as a human hair, they are single use, disposable and sterile. Many people do not even feel them enter the body. Acupuncture is safe, and Marianne, being a member of the British Acupuncture Council, is trained to a high standard, having been in practice since 2010.

Here, at Deeping Osteopaths, our acupuncturist, Marianne Killick, practises the traditional Chinese Medicine style of acupuncture, which means she treats the whole person, as the body, mind and emotions cannot be separated. Marianne takes a full history, which includes looking at your tongue and taking your pulse. From this, she can identify where the energy or “Qi” (pronounced chee) is either stuck, depleted or in excess within the body. She can then create a patient-specific treatment plan of acupuncture points. Marianne says, “Acupuncture is a great therapy as it can be used on young and old alike, and works safely alongside conventional medical treatment”. Many women, in particular, approach acupuncture for help at all stages of their reproductive life, from puberty, through their child-bearing years and on to the menopause.

If you would like to find out how acupuncture can help improve your well-being, you can ring Marianne directly on 07790036333 or e-mail her at info@mariannekillick.co.uk

So what is vishing? The principle behind it is no different to phishing (internet fraud) - in which people try to fool you into disclosing your personal information, with the intention of identity theft or fraud. Where a criminal tries to illicit this over the phone, it is known as “vishing” (telephone fraud). Fraudsters, purporting to be from a local council, have targeted both male and female victims aged sixty and over, phoning to say that they have been placed in the wrong council tax bracket for a number of years and that they are entitled to a rebate; they normally say that this rebate should be worth approximately £7000. Once a victim is convinced that they are due a rebate for having been in the wrong tax bracket, the fraudster tells them that, in order to receive the rebate, they will need to pay an administration fee in advance; the payment they ask for varies between £60 - £350. The victim provides the details and makes the payment, but then is no longer able to make contact with the person they spoke to on the phone. When they phone their council about the rebate, the council will confirm that they know nothing about it and that they have been contacted by fraudsters. Protect yourself from vishing: • Your local council will never phone out-of-the-blue to discuss a council tax rebate - if you receive a call of this nature, put the phone down straight away. • No legitimate organisation will ask you to pay an advanced fee in order receive owed money; so never give them your card details. • If you think you have been a victim of fraud, hang up the phone and, prior to making another call to report it, wait five minutes to clear the line as fraudsters sometimes keep the line open. Then call your bank or card issuer to report the fraud. Where it is possible, use a different phone line to make the phone call. To report a fraud and receive a police crime reference number, call Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or use their online fraud reporting tool at www.actionfraud.police.uk/report_fraud

Which Internet Security Suite should I use? undetectable by antivirus software. This is partly due to cheaper malware tools readily available to cybercriminals. These tools allow them to increase the number and variety of malware they produce.

A

t one time I was happy to recommend the use of free antivirus solutions, such as AVG and Avast (the two leading free solutions). However, in recent years, things have changed and viruses now account for less than 40% of the threat to your online security, as criminals turn to other, more successful methods, for stealing your data or loading malicious content onto your system. As such my recommendation is now to invest in a full Internet Security suite. One common response I get when I give this recommendation is, “But I’ve been running AVG/ Avast for years and I don’t have any problems”. This is a flawed argument, as the cyber criminals do not want you to know that you have been attacked and infected. Generally, they want their malicious content to sit hidden on your system with you blissfully unaware. So, just because you can’t detect it or see it, doesn’t mean that you have not been compromised. Areas where the free anti-virus solutions are weak and usually fall short are: Complex Malicious Files: Over the years, malware have become more complex, aggressive, and

Malicious Websites: Malicious websites have also become another way for cybercriminals to reach their victims. Using schemes, cybercriminals can lure you to phishing sites, fake websites designed to steal your information. You can also land on sites that check your computer for software vulnerabilities it can exploit so it can install malware. A visit to a malicious site could also trigger a drive-by download, the automatic download of malware without your knowledge. Privacy Risks: Given the popularity of social media, it’s become typical for people to share a lot of personal information online— be it status updates, locations or photos. However, with the complicated and ever-changing privacy settings of most social networks, you could be sharing more information than you intended. Every detail you post online could be collected to build up a persona and used for identity theft. Your online accounts could also be hijacked by strangers. Information Theft: Data-stealing malware use different tactics to get your information. They can load phishing sites that mimic your bank’s login pages. They can also remember everything you type in and send it to the “bad guys”. Some cybercriminals even created a homemade browser that steals user information.

SPAM and Malicious Email: Today’s spam is crafted to closely resemble legitimate e-mail. Sometimes, the only distinction between a fake and a real message is a few altered links. Aside from looking more convincing, today’s spam is used by cybercriminals to infect your computer. Some messages contain attachments that are actually malware in disguise. Unsecured WiFi and Home Network Security: Cybercriminals can easily hide behind an unsecure network and use your connection to perform malicious activities. They can also steal data from your network-linked devices or even use your devices to spy on you. Free public Wi-Fi hotspots are also unsecured networks. They may be convenient, but “bad guys” can use them to steal your information and hijack your online accounts. Which Internet Security Suite should I choose? A quick search on the web will reveal that there are many solutions. As an independent IT advisor, a couple of times a year I carry out a summary of the top review sites to determine which solutions are performing most effectively. A table, compiled in September 2015, shows that there are three clear market leaders; Bitdefender, Norton and Kaspersky, with the most consistent of these three being Bitdefender. To view the full results table for this survey of reviews go to http://bit.ly/1jYAjhM.

Well, I sowed my green manure in one area of my allotment and it is flourishing: it will need digging in before it flowers, which will be after the winter months, and I will then have to see if it has kept the weeds at bay and provided the soil with enough nutrients to give me a good, healthy crop next year.

T

his month is not as restful as one might think, as the allotment needs a good tidying-up: don’t leave old crops to rot; they may harbour pests and disease. Also a priority this month is to give the allotment or vegetable patch a thorough digging over and spread manure over the surface and also to manure or compost the bean trench. If you have a soil with a low pH then add lime, but not at the same time as compost as they react together. November is the month for pruning fruit trees and bushes, with the exception of cherries and plums, before the weather gets really cold and the ground is too hard or frozen. Also, bare-rooted fruit trees, bushes and canes should be planted now whilst they are dormant. When they are planted, spread a

mulch of well-rotted manure around the base. Leaf mould makes good mulch and if you have plenty of leaves you can easily make a cage to contain the leaves, using four stakes and stapling chicken wire around them. Just throw the leaves in and leave them for a year to rot down. Apart from the fruit trees, there is very little that can be planted this month and if you haven’t already planted garlic, rhubarb and over-wintering varieties of broad bean, it is your last chance to do so. With rhubarb, spread well-rotted manure around the plant, but don’t cover the crown. If you have heavy soil that tends to hold water then put either gravel or sharp sand in the base of the hole before planting garlic cloves.

| Your Finances

by Richard Ash, Director - Liberty Partnership Ltd

Tax Benefits of a Pension When did you last look at the benefits of a pension? You may be surprised by recent changes! A pension is not necessarily what people think it is. It is just a tax-efficient pot of cash which you, your employer (and sometimes the Government) pay into, as a way of saving up for your retirement. You get some tax back on the money you put into a pension, while gains from the investments you make with that cash are largely tax-free.

Tax relief on contributions ‘when the money is paid in’

Tax Benefits ‘when the money is paid out at retirement’

You get the tax back you’ve paid on all contributions, if you’re under 75, subject to an annual allowance. This usually goes straight into your pension pot.

The Pension Commencement Lump Sum refers to the lump sum of money you can withdraw from your pension pot when you retire.

If you pay the money into your pension yourself, or if it is taken by your employer from your pay packet, you automatically get 20%, higher rate tax payers can claim an additional 20%, and additional rate tax can claim an additional 25% back from the Government.

In simple terms, a £100 pension contribution will cost: A basic rate tax payer £80 – tax relief of £20 will be given. A higher rate tax payer £60 – tax relief of £20 will be given and an additional £20 claimed. An additional rate tax payer £55 tax relief of £20 will be given and an additional £25 claimed.

When you retire, you can normally take up to 25% of your pension pot as a tax-free lump sum (some older pensions may allow you to take more). This sum can be used for whatever you like… it really is up to you! Your remaining pension fund is then used to provide an income in retirement. Under the new pension rules from April 2015, you don’t have to take all of your 25% tax-free cash as a lump sum. You can now take an income direct from your fund, and each payment made by your pension provider will be 25% tax-free and 75% taxable as income.

If you wish to arrange a pension, review your existing retirement funds, or if you are an employer setting up a workplace pension scheme, please contact our office on 01778 342291 for a free initial discussion.

Words e h t m o r f Mayor

to raise an impressive £348.72p on the day. The recent Great Eastern Fun Run, around the roads and streets of Peterborough on October 11th, gave my colleague, District Councillor Ashley Baxter, (in the guise of “Team Scooby”) the opportunity to boost my coffers for me, for which I am most grateful. Next month, I will be able to report on just how successful his “blood, toil, tears and sweat” actually were in raising money for my two charities.

Councillor Wayne Lester One of the most enjoyable duties that I’m finding in my role as Mayor of Market Deeping is to see how the wonderful efforts of all of those people involved in raising money for my nominated charities this year, are making such a sterling effort to do as much as possible to that end. Just a reminder to you all that my charities this year are Age Concern Deepings and Market Deeping Scouts and Guides. Thanks go to everyone who attended the “Mayor’s Car Boot Sale” on September 13th and dug deep

In the next couple of months, leading up to Christmas, there will be some serious planning and hard work undertaken by many of you, to ensure that everyone can do their bit, whether to create, and offer for sale, items at the Autumn Fayre and on the Christmas Market, to remember the fallen at Remembrance Day parades, or to sing carols by the Christmas tree. Look out for further details, as the big festive season starts to rumble into gear. Your “Discovering Deeping” events section will keep you all informed of what this fantastic community of ours can get together to create, for the benefit of not just us, but also for those less fortunate than ourselves. Enjoy the next two months and the build-up to what we all hope will be our best Christmas yet!

Solar Panels time to fit them

…NOW

Thinking of installing solar panels on your property? Take a look to find out why now could be financially the very best time to do it. Thousands of homeowners across the country have installed solar panels over the last few years, saving money on their energy bills, protecting themselves from future price rises and, best of all, getting paid by the government for the electricity they generate. This has made solar energy a sound investment and given homeowners a healthy return. However, recent announcements made by the Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC) strongly suggest that Feed-in Tariff (FiT) payments are to see drastic cuts in 2016. In fact, the Feed-in Tariff review document, published on August 27th by the DECC, laid out plans to cut the Feed-in Tariff for small scale solar PV installations by as much as 87%. Although the plans have not yet been confirmed, it is likely that all bands of the tariff will be affected quite severely. However, it is the installations in the 0-10kW band (almost all domestic installations) that will be hardest hit. In addition, a review of the default degression (applied to all tariffs) is expected to reduce the Feed-in Tariff to zero, for installations under 10kw, by 2019.

38

D I S C O V E R I N G

If you are considering installing a solar PV system, our advice is to ACT NOW, or risk a significant reduction in the pay back your system generates. All systems installed prior to the cut-off date of 31st December will receive the Feed-in Tariff currently shown on the Ofgem website, which is up to 12.47 pence per kWh. After January 1st 2016, it could be as low as 1.63 pence per kWh! Princeenergy is a registered MCS installer, and can offer advice on all aspects of solar installations, from products and the suitability of your property to potential paybacks and government schemes. As a trading division of Princebuild, a family-run business that has been trading for over forty years, you can be safe in the knowledge that Princeenergy will be here to provide support and servicing through the life of your solar panels and beyond. Contact one of our team to discuss your

requirements, and arrange a free, no obligation quotation.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Mark Sherwood feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have

struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Bourne & the surrounding villages and Mark is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal

satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much

a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Mark a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

1,000 Volunteer Sergeant Mosley’s Musings “The 1000 Volunteer Challenge” Challenge ProjeCt | Police Patrol by Bourne’s Sergeant 503 Rick Mosley

Annual Report 2013 - 2014

Lincolnshire Police currently has a challenge, set by the Police and Crime Commissioner, Alan Hardwick, to have in place one thousand volunteers as part of his Police and Crime Plan. This will give communities across Lincolnshire the opportunity for local people to contribute to the work of the police and link to their community. It is also an opportunity for people to gain valuable experience which may help when applying for a job, while working alongside police officers and staff.

To achieve the “1000 Volunteer Challenge”, Lincolnshire Police has been working in partnership with the voluntary sector to improve the way that we recruit volunteers. Police Support Volunteers (PSVs) undertake a wide range of roles across the Force and we are increasing the opportunities available to meet the challenge. Roles differ greatly, depending on what volunteers want to gain from their experience. Currently in the Bourne, Stamford and Market Deeping area there are several vacancies including: • Crime Callback Volunteer – to act as a point of contact between the police and vulnerable victims of crime. • ASB Callback Volunteer – to act as a point of contact between the police and vulnerable victims of ASB, (anti-social behaviour).

Police Cadet Leader – to provide training and • support for police cadets. • Police Vehicle Cleaner – to help clean and maintain all police vehicles, including the equipment that they carry. To be eligible to apply, volunteers must be aged eighteen and over. There is no upper age limit. The role for which you apply will need to be suitable for you. You must have been resident in the UK for three years so that we can undertake security checks. Finally tattoos and piercings are not necessarily a bar to appointment, but it depends on their size, nature, location and on the extent. You will be required to provide photos of any tattoos on the hands, arms, neck or face during the application process. Full details of these vacancies, and others offered around the county, can be found at www.lincs. police.uk/Join-Us/Volunteers/

policing with PRIDE To report a crime, call 101 or 999 if in progress.

• Front Counter Volunteer – to staff the front counter at a police station and deal with enquiries by members of the public.

Ten things you didn’t know about wills – It’s not just giving your stuff away! 1. Thirty-five million people in England and Wales don’t have a valid up-to-date will – It’s not just you. 2. Anyone over the age of eighteen can make a will – You are not too young. 3. Over four thousand people die each week in the UK without a valid will – Don’t be one of them. 4. Your will is the only way to appoint legal guardians for your children – Don’t make social services choose who they live with. 5. If you are not married, then a valid will is the only way that your partner can inherit from you – There is no such thing as common law husband and wife. 6. A valid will lets you choose who looks after your affairs when you die – Without one, the Government sets the rules. 7. You can look after your pets in your will – Make sure they are comfortable and cared for. 8. You can express your funeral wishes in your will – Hawaiian shirts all round? 9. A will must be in writing – No videos, DVDs or tapes. 10. Your will is great for tax-planning and can protect your assets too.

The “Wright Stuff” for Bourne’s Youth! As a father, with three very active sons, all of whom have either been, or are still going through those wonderful “scooter/BMX/skateboard years”, it was with no small degree of interest that I recently checked out Bourne’s latest and brightest offering – Session 365. Since opening on August 1st, we are now lucky to have in the centre of Bourne, a large, airy treasure-trove of all things technical, related to the above, as well as rails of skating and biking apparel. Enthusiastic father and son team, owner Rolando and Harri Wright, are well aware of the need felt by the youth of Bourne to not only have their own skatepark, but also an outlet such as this, in Wherry’s

Lane, just off North Street. Rolando’s wide and varied background includes time spent covering the first BMX events in Britain for “Sport for Television”, whilst Harri can ally ten years of skateboarding, scootering and BMXing alongside his considerable experiences as a talented musician.

Bourne needs an impressive outlet like this – now let’s hope the skatepark will soon follow!

The walls and floor of the shop are well-stocked with the top names in all three disciplines - “Federal” and “Cult” for BMX models and accessories; “District” and “Apex” for scooters; and “Renner” skateboards. Various components, alongside helmets and t shirts, hoodies, beanie hats and snapbacks are in abundance.

| Pets and Vets

By Alder Veterinary Practice, Bourne

DO I NEED TO BRUSH MY DOG’S TEETH? Dentistry is an increasingly large part of veterinary work. It now seems that nearly every dog and cat requires at least one treatment, if not several, in their lifetimes. Why is this? Wild dogs and cats that catch sufficient wild food, generally have perfect teeth. The mouth contains millions of harmless bacteria. Things begin to go wrong when these beneficial bacteria are replaced with disease-producing ones. Some of these produce lactic acid, which then damages the teeth below the gum level. This is seen as gingivitis, which then produces the ideal environment for more diseaseproducing bacteria. Plaque that is seen in many dog and cat mouths is initially produced by the harmless bacteria. This plaque in the absence of gingivitis is not a problem and is really evidence that there is not sufficient abrasive action occurring over the teeth. There are several ways to achieve this necessary abrasive action. Owners are often told to brush their dog’s teeth (good luck with the cat!) This is undoubtedly a good thing to do, but the dog will need to be trained to accept this. Chewing is the answer. Dry biscuits do not produce this wear. The most efficient way to remove or reduce plaque is to chew on bones. These must be raw and of sufficient size and strength that whole bits of bone are not swallowed. Most dogs like a good marrow bone and will spend hours chewing one (just be careful to introduce these gradually or else too much raw marrow initially might cause some diarrhoea). Other useful products are raw cow’s trachea and large pieces of tendon. All these products can be found at most good pet stores and are nicely packaged by a company called “Nature’s Menu”. Other, more traditional, dog chews are helpful, but not so effective. “Dentistix” are also useful, but are less effective at removing plaque.

there is both individual and breed susceptibility. Diets that are high in sugar and carbohydrate produce the right environment for lactic acid, producing bacteria that lead to dental disease. There are many diets on the market now that have reduced sugar and carbohydrate. These are generally grain-free. Many owners and some vets are now seeing the beneficial effects of feeding a raw diet which includes bones. One last product that is useful at protecting your dog and cat’s gums when they are developing plaque is called “Plaque Off”. This is an unfortunate name as it is only slightly effective at removing plaque! This product contains iodine (in seaweed) and acts as an antiseptic around the gums, reducing the chance of bacterial disease. Animals on this product will still get plaque (unless chewing bones) but they are protected from gum disease.

With the right diet and some bone chewing, your pet should not need so many dental visits to your vet!

Serious dental disease follows plaque build-up. Diet has a large part to play in this, although

| Legal Advice

by Buckles Solicitors

The “Bank of Mum and Dad”

Parents want to do everything they can for their children when setting up their first home. However, what used to be a case of starting a “bottom drawer” with bedding, towels etc. has turned into hard cash, given the scarcity of 100% mortgages. When things go wrong in a cohabiting relationship, the client and the parents usually assume the gifted sum will be returned to them or excluded from any financial settlement - this is not so. If the gifted money is paid into a jointly-owned property, the effect is the gifted sum becomes a gift to your child and his/her partner. There are ways of protecting this gifted sum and, whilst seen as unromantic at the time, it can save upset and legal debate if things go wrong:

it shows the parties’ understanding at the time of purchase and persuades the Court how to resolve any dispute. This is prepared by a family lawyer and tailored to meet individual requirements. Purchasing a property is one of the most expensive purchases we make, yet the legal ramifications are often overlooked until it is too late. We urge young couples and parents to take time to think about the purchase and adopt contingency plans.

• The property can be purchased as tenants in common and held in unequal shares to reflect the gifted sum. This should be discussed with the conveyancer, so they can prepare the documentation correctly.

It should be remembered that, whichever safeguard is used, it will not mar the relationship, as it will only ever see the light of day if the relationship goes wrong!

• You could have a Declaration of Trust, whereby should the relationship fail, the gifted sum will be returned or passed for the benefit of the child.

If you are a parent, or a young couple looking to purchase your first property together, and would like to discuss the idea of cohabitation agreements further, please contact Beverley Harrison on 01780 484579 or e-mail beverley.harrison@buckles-law.co.uk.

• You could have a Cohabitation Agreement. Although this is not a “water tight” document,

| Motoring - monthly advice from Tom Ingram

Motoring Blog Revealed by Big Tom A BIG TOM warm welcome to my motoring section, and much needed warmth, as the temperature begins to fall! I have had to shelve my original plan of a yearly review, prior to the Christmas edition next month, as space is tight. However, I have just enough space to inform my readers here of an interesting, regularly updated blog about all things motoring in Bourne, Stamford, Deeping, Spalding, Grantham and Peterborough. It is a fabulous “one-stop” shop window of articles raised in our local press to do with petitions on road safety, Council Parish meeting news, new motoring legislation, roadwork updates, collision news, criminal case updates in our local courts – there really is something for everyone. Some of it is funny, some sad, and some so odd that you might not believe it is true, but I assure you it is all authentic and most certainly was reported by our local press!

I offer it to you as a weekly bitesize collection of motoring news. It can be found on my driving school website: http://www. bigtom.org.uk/ big-tom-blog/

Looking forward to our Christmas edition next month!
