R E A S O N S TO MARKE T Y OU R PR O P E R T Y BE F O RE C H R I ST MA S. QUESTION: Do people stop looking for a

new property over the Christmas period?

ANSWER: NO. Rightmove, the UK’s number one property website has provided us with statistics from the festive period that really suggest sellers can make the Christmas season work for them. On Christmas Day itself, the Rightmove site received over 14 million page views, with over 10,000 people taking a break from slicing the turkey to search for property. On Boxing Day, the site was even busier, with views finally peaking on New Year’s Day at 25 million. The holidays, with family around and life finally slowing down, is the ideal time for browsing property listings in front of the TV. Serious buyers are unlikely to let Christmas deter them if they stumble across the perfect home. Typically there is less choice for buyers with fewer properties on the market before Christmas so your property will be noticed by more people. By the time everybody else decides to put their property on the market after Christmas, you’ll already have a buyer or be well ahead of the game. If you do not want to be disturbed at Christmas time Newton Fallowell can prepare and launch your property in time to take advantage of the festive peak in property interest. We will take bookings for viewings to commence on an agreed date of your choice after the celebrations have ended and things return to normal.

Get your property on the market before Christmas. Don’t join the masses in the New Year. FOR A FR E E V AL U ATIO N A N D H O M E MO V ING AD V I C E C O N T A C T M A N A GI N G PAR TNE R JO NATHAN BRE W E LL t : 0 1778 345978 | e : d eep i ng @ newtonf a l l owel l . co. uk

Welcome to our December edition...

Deeping

Another Christmas fast approaching and the big switch-on of Deeping’s Christmas lights on November 29th nearly here. In comes December and, once again, we’ll all be excited with the build-up to the big day as Santa’s Sleigh travels from street to street and from village to village in our area. The Deeping Rotary and Lions Clubs will be out in force, to accompany the grand old man and collect for their deserving

charities. Take a look at the planned route on page 11, and be ready to share the sheer joy as little faces light up when they look out to see the sleigh outside their house.

| A little bit of History

Discovering . . . the River Welland

The waterway which runs through the Deepings from west to east provides an attractive Sunday afternoon walk that belies its status as one of the three major lowland rivers traversing eastern England to their outfall in the Wash, along with the Nene and the Great Ouse to the south. The Welland rises in the Hothorpe Hills at Sibbertoft in Northamptonshire before flowing eastwards to Market Harborough, Stamford and the Deepings, then on to Spalding and the North Sea, a distance of 65 miles and with its tributaries, forms a river system with a catchment area of more than 600 square miles. The Deepings had a river trade from the earliest times but this was given added impetus in the early 17th century when it was opened up from Stamford to the sea, bringing added employment and prosperity. Until then, several water mills on the Welland between there and Market Deeping had been making it difficult for commercial traffic and in 1571, merchants appealed to Queen Elizabeth to construct a new cut which would make the river navigable throughout. The work was eventually approved in 1620 to allow the passage of boats, lighters and other vessels for a fee of 3d. per ton, so bringing added opportunities for the Deepings where wharves, landing stages and jetties had already sprung up along the river bank to handle cargoes of coal, wood, wine and provisions, often brought in by convoys of five vessels at 8

a time, each carrying twenty tons, and drawn by horses along tow paths that can still be seen today in several places. When the barges arrived in Market Deeping, workmen would be waiting at the jetties close to the main street to unload and the goods transported by horse and cart to nearby warehouses to await sale and distribution. During the 19th century, one family owned several barges which were built in the yard of their house overlooking the river and the boat owner had a special protruding oriel window built into the front of his property in order that he could sit in comfort and watch his craft as they hove into view. The sporting tradition along the river also has an eminent place in our history, embracing fishing, wildfowling, boating and skating, and an annual raft race which has more recent origins has now become a popular event attracting an assortment of homemade craft raising funds for the benefit of local charities. Archive photograph of the river from 1930.

Team ‘Safe Local Trades’ has raised over £6,000 for Age UK Peterborough - a total of over £31,000 since 2009! Each year, Peterboroughbased Safe Local Trades organise fund-raising events for their chosen charity, Age UK Peterborough. This year, they had volunteers getting muddy and wet in the Insane Terrain obstacle course; some hauled themselves out of a plane at 13,000 feet; and many others kept their feet firmly on the ground by taking part in the Great Eastern Run. All events were an overall success and the organiser, Eileen Le Voi, owner of Safe Local Trades, said, “We would like to thank each and every volunteer who took part, and to everyone who sponsored them in their events, all of which helped to raise an amazing £6,045 for this very worthy local charity”. David Bache, Chief Executive of Age UK Peterborough, said, “Once again, Eileen and her team of dedicated volunteers have exceeded our expectations by presenting us with this huge cheque. £6,045 is a huge sum of money and will help us to make a big difference to the quality

10

of life for many older people in Peterborough. On behalf of the Age UK Peterborough team, I pass on our most sincere thanks to Eileen and everyone who took part in the events.” Safe Local Trades have been Eileen Le Voi running annual fundraising events for Age UK Peterborough since 2009 and, since then, have helped to raise over £31,000, which is an amazing achievement. www.safelocaltrades.com provides free access to highly recommended, vetted and approved local tradesmen. Even though December is a month you don’t really associate with spending time at the allotment or in the vegetable patch there are still crops that you can harvest or leave in the ground until they are required.

S

ome gardeners put their allotment or vegetable patch “to bed” for the winter by covering the ground in plastic sheeting, or weed suppressant to keep weeds at bay, the ground a little warmer for early spring planting and to prevent heavy rain from washing away the soil’s nutrients. Before putting the covering down it is worth digging the plot well and adding plenty of well-rotted organic material. I have done this on some of my allotment: one area has “green manure” growing on it, and doing very well, and then I have some crops still left in-such as potatoes for Christmas, Brussels, purple sprouting broccoli, cavolo nero (which should withstand the harshest of weather), spring cabbage and over-wintering onions and garlic. There are one or two crops that you can still plant such as; garlic ( if the soil is not frozen or waterlogged, new crowns of rhubarb can be planted or existing ones divided and re-planted, bare-root fruit trees and bushes and raspberry and blackberry canes. To divide rhubarb lift the crown and with a sharp spade divide it into sections, each with a bud. Re-plant each section, in well-manured ground, with the bud just showing. When you have gathered the fruits of your labour, and usually there is far more than you can possibly eat, storing them carefully will mean that you will have home-grown veg for a few more weeks. Make sure that vegetables are stored in a cool dry and, if possible, dark frost-free place away from vermin. To store carrots and parsnips spread a layer of sand in the bottom of a wooden box, lay the roots on top (make sure they are not touching) and then cover them with another layer of sand. The sand should not be dry but just moist enough to stop the vegetables from drying out. Have a wonderful Christmas, hopefully eating some of your home-grown veg and a happy and productive New Year.

| Your health by Michael Oldfield BSc (Hons)

Work, Driving & Osteopathy Are you fit for work? No matter whether your work is in the office or outside on the land, you need to be able to cope with the individual demands made on your body by the style of work you do.

Those who drive for a living need to be aware of their driving position, as it affects not only their back, neck and shoulders, but also can affect hips, knees and feet. Ask an osteopath for advice on the correct driving position for you and any exercises which may help.

Manual work inevitably carries the inherent risk of injury, caused by heavy and often awkward lifting, overstretching and periods of prolonged bending, causing back and disc injuries, sciatica, and muscle strains.

How can an Osteopath help? The osteopath will help you look at the style of work you are undertaking and help you find ways of improving the situation and how to prevent a recurrence of your injuries. You will be treated and offered advice on posture and lifting.

In the office, where desk work is more common, there are the dangers of ‘computer hump’ and ‘mouse wrist’, whilst frequent telephone use affects the neck and shoulders, causing headaches and carpal tunnel syndrome etc.

Useful tips • Frequent short breaks away from the desk and computer will help avoid back, neck and eye strain. • Make sure if you are driving, that you make time to stop, get out and do some brisk exercise for a few minutes every so often on a long journey. • When lifting at work, judge whether you can do this safely or whether you need help. Never be afraid to ask for assistance.

Many Happy Returns – (if you follow this advice!) Over the festive season, it is estimated that £2.4billion is spent on unwanted Christmas gifts. Shops are under no legal obligation to exchange or refund a gift unless it was faulty when bought, it is not as described, or it is not fit for purpose. If it doesn’t fit you properly or you just don’t like the gift you received, you have no automatic right to return it. If the gift you have purchased is faulty, you have a statutory right to a refund or replacement, whether the goods were bought in a shop or from a market stall .The Sale of Goods Act says the goods must be of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose and as described. You may come up against opposition when trying to return faulty goods, for example being told a receipt is always required, or being advised by the retailer to contact the manufacturer. If a product is faulty, a proof of purchase will suffice (perhaps a bank statement), and don’t be persuaded to go to the manufacturer … the retailer is responsible. If you want to return something just because you don’t like it, you don’t need it or it doesn’t fit, the retailer has no legal obligation to take it back or refund you. Many retailers have returns policies that allow you, the customer, to take items back and get refunds,

exchanges or vouchers as long as the items returned are unused and in perfect condition with their undamaged original packaging. The individual store’s return policy should be checked, as some products may be excluded from the returns policy, for example for hygiene reasons, or the store may impose time limits for returning non-faulty products. At Christmas, some retailers offer special extended refund periods, meaning you may have longer than you think. A stores-return-policy is usually displayed on receipts, on signs in-store or online. Shops don’t have to have a returns policy, but if they have one, they must stick to it. If you buy goods on the internet, you have the same rights as if you were shopping on the high street. In addition, you have the right to a seven-day cooling-off period from the date you receive the goods, with the right to a full refund regardless of the reason for return. However, this doesn’t apply in some situations, for example if the goods were personalised for you, were perishable, or are not in the same condition as when they were delivered. Before ordering, ensure you check the terms and conditions very carefully.

Cruising – Leave it to Clare at Travel Counsellors We work closely with many of the world’s best cruise lines to bring the best voyages to you. Our partnerships ensure we have access to competitive prices and, coupled with my personal service, your cruise holiday will be just as you want it. Whether it is sumptuous luxury, open-ocean cruising, something a little different with a river or niche cruise, or an escape for the whole family, I’ll be able to match the right cruise to you. Cruising is more than just a holiday. It’s an indulgent getaway, a gourmet dining experience. It can be action-packed family fun, an opportunity to learn, maybe an excuse to dance the night away or to marvel at glitzy West End shows. When you choose to cruise, you open yourself to a whole new world of destinations and fabulous ships that will truly take your breath away. With so many options, it takes time to choose the perfect voyage and I will work with you to find the type of holiday that is right for you. I’m completely independent and have close, personal relationships with the world’s best cruise lines. This means I have access to the industry’s best technology for competitive prices and the broadest range of itineraries. It also means that I can package up whatever you desire… pre-cruise hotel stays, post-cruise

adventures, exciting excursions in the incredible destinations you’ll be visiting, flight upgrades, transfers included, a cruise-stay-cruise package. Whatever it is you want from your holiday, let me create it all for you … from start to finish.

My Top Tips For Cruising

• Not all ships are the same different ones suit different people. Take advice from a specialist! • Do your research and go with a cruise line that provides what you’re looking for e.g. a cookery school, dance classes or themed cruises. • Pick the right ship for you and your party with expert guidance. You need

to know what to expect, particularly if you haven’t cruised before. • Take the correct clothing for the season. • Freedom dining is a good option on some ships, as you don’t feel tied to a time for eating. • Many ports have local taxis that can be shared with other passengers and are great value. • There is a ship for everyone, and compare the overall price – don’t be guided by the cheapest or advertised prices. • When choosing a cabin, look to see what is around it, e.g. is the nightclub below you? A cabin near lifts/stairs may be convenient, but expect a high footfall past your door. I would love the opportunity to help plan your next cruise holiday, It can include as much or as little as you wish and be as unique as you are.

Rose Lodge offer residents and families a fine dining experience this Christmas

F

ive star dining is not usually associated with Care Homes but this is definitely not the case for residents at Rose Lodge. With two restaurants at the home, the Ivories and Rowan suite both have been designed to ensure residents enjoy a fine dining experience with waitress service; and gorgeous food in beautiful, luxury surroundings. The home will be offering high quality, nutritious food, made from fresh ingredients and beautifully presented in a restaurant style. Christmas tends to be a time of indulgence, and the residents at Rose Lodge will be treated to a stunning yuletide menu of beautifully cooked Christmas dishes. The home will also make sure that there are options for those with special dietary requirements. Discussing the Christmas period Suria

Webb, Home Manager said “Christmas can be a difficult time for families when they have a loved one apart from them, and staff at Rose Lodge are focused on ensuring families feel part of the home; whether it’s enjoying a Christmas meal together or just popping in for afternoon tea. Everyone is welcome.”

The Countdown to Christmas! Seasonal advice from the decorating experts

December isn’t just about Advent calendars, buying presents and sending cards…. For many households, it is the last chance to prepare the house for the big day, which usually means a big clean, re-arrangement of furniture to accommodate the tree and then a trip into the loft to get all the decorations down, followed by a shopping trip to add to the collection! If, like many you’ve been leisurely decorating throughout the year, then December is the month when everyone frantically tries to finish off those last few jobs – touching up the walls, putting up the pictures, finishing the tiling and, for some… getting new carpets fitted! The television adverts are awash with feel-good family scenes in immaculate and beautifully decorated homes, with companies promising delivery before Christmas. All this adds to the pressure of finishing those last minute DIY jobs and decorating tasks as soon as December kicks in. If you are hoping for some wise words – me, telling you not to worry and not to get sucked into the chaos of it all, I’m afraid I can’t help you – I too, am one of those people rushing around preparing for the big day. On the up-side at least, there are plenty of ways to make it easier on yourself; you can hire a cleaner, a decorator, an odd job man (check out ‘The Directory’ at the back of the magazine) and even an interior designer. But, for those of you without that luxury budget or, if you just prefer the personal touch, then try not to get stressed, enjoy it, make it fun and do it all with a glass of mulled wine or a mince pie in hand – I find that makes most tasks enjoyable! Here’s some Christmas inspiration from your local home decorating centre - Stringer’s. The team there will be able to answer all your paint and wallpaper queries. All items available from Stringer’s Home Decorating Centre, perhaps not the mulled wine and mince pies though !!!

Paint, wallpaper, decorating tools, garden furniture, homeware and inspiration - you’ll find everything you need at Stringers Home Decorating Centre t: 01778 422420 e: mail@stringersdiy.com Manning Road, Bourne, Lincolnshire PE10 9HW

Words from the Mayor Councillor Wayne Lester November saw us remember the fallen at the opening of our Remembrance Gardens and during the annual parade and service. This year, a new bench, in memory of the late Councillor Reg. Howard, was also commemorated. The Age Concern Deepings Autumn Fayre proved a big success too.

We’re all looking forward to the Christmas Market on Sunday November 29th, starting at 10.00am, Keith Dalton will be our compere for the day, and acts on the stage are as follows; I will have a tombola stall, raising money for my chosen charities, Age Concern Deepings and the Deeping Scout and Guides. There will be many other stalls, offering seasonal gifts and goods for the home and a Santa’s grotto for the children. 11am

Council business continues, even though Christmas is just around the corner! Interactive Speed Signs: We have short-listed locations for new interactive speed signs and await the green light from the speed watch safety team. Hopefully, we will have the new signs up by early spring 2016. Precept planning: We have been busy developing our precept and will be holding a public meeting on December 9th at 7.00pm, to allow the electorate of Market Deeping to have their say on how we spend their money and setting the budget for 2016/2017. All residents are welcome to attend. Pedestrian crossing on Godsey Lane: We are discussing with Lincolnshire County Council, (L.C.C.) the safety of pedestrians when using the Godsey Lane pedestrian crossing. We want to hear your views on how we can improve the crossing.

“Ain’t no sunshine when it’s gone” The government has proposed drastic cuts to Solar Feed-in Tariffs from January 2016. Read on, to find out why now could be your last chance to secure a return on your investment. Thousands of homeowners across the country have installed solar panels over the last few years, saving money on their energy bills, protecting themselves from future price rises and, best of all, getting paid by the government for the electricity they generate. This has made solar energy a sound investment and given homeowners a healthy return. However, recent announcements made by the Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC) propose that Feed-in Tariff (FiT) payments could see drastic cuts in 2016. The Feed-in Tariff for small scale solar PV installations could be cut by as much as 87%. All bands of the tariff will be affected quite severely by the proposed cuts. However, it is the installations in the 0-10kW band (almost all domestic installations) that will be hardest hit. In addition, a review of the default degression (applied to all tariffs) is expected to reduce the Feed-in Tariff to zero, for installations under 10kw, by 2019. If you are considering installing a solar PV system, our advice is to ACT NOW, or risk a significant reduction in the pay-back your system generates. All systems installed prior to the cut-off date of

24

December 31st will receive the Feed-in Tariff currently shown on the Ofgem website, which is up to 12.47 pence per kWh. After January 1st 2016, it could be as low as 1.63 pence per kWh! Princeenergy is a registered MCS installer, and can offer advice on all aspects of solar installations, from products and the suitability of your property to potential paybacks and government schemes. We can install solar panels on your home in under two weeks, from initial enquiry to final handover, so there is still time to take advantage of the current FiT tariff. As a trading division of Princebuild, a family-run business that has been trading for over forty years, you can be safe in the knowledge that Princeenergy will be here to provide support and servicing through the life of your solar panels and beyond.

“Pickpockets. Don’t Let Them Spoil Your Christmas!”

Carpets dry within 1-2 hours

Dear readers

Upholstery Cleaning

Now that the busy Christmas period is fast approaching, please be aware that cases of pick pocketing always increase at this time of the year, so don’t be a victim. Keep purses secure and carry wallets in an inside pocket. Zip up hand and shoulder bags. Carry bags in front of you with flaps against your body. Keep straps short and bags tucked under your arm. Don’t show your money - keep it safely in your pocket and when using the ATM, always ensure that your money has been secured in your purse or wallet before turning away.

Here are several tactics that pickpockets use: The Helpful Stranger: someone may approach you and say that you have something on your jacket or coat and will automatically rub it off, allowing them to get close to you The Hugger Mugger: a stranger may pretend to be sociable and friendly and will put their arms around you or link their arm through yours with a view to picking your pockets The Easy Dip: pickpockets will be watching and if your bag or backpack is left open, they may follow you until they get the opportunity to dip in and remove easy items that are on show The Distraction: typically using a map, a stranger may ask you for directions and whilst you are pointing out directions on the map, another person will carry out the pickpocket whilst you are distracted The Stall: as a lot of pickpockets work in pairs, they will identify their victim and one person will deliberately stand in front you, at a counter, getting on a train or bus etc., and will stall for some reason - the other person is directly behind the victim allowing them to get up close to carry out the crime The Concealed Hand: pickpockets often use items such as a newspaper to cover their hand whilst they carry out the crime

advice from Double and Megson

Getting on to the Property Ladder A number of affordable housing schemes exist to help people on lower incomes to get on to the property ladder.

Shared ownership

Whether the property is a house or a flat, if you own it on a shared ownership basis, you own a leasehold interest in the property. Under the terms of the lease, you own a percentage of the property, paying rent to the landlord (normally a Housing Association) on the percentage that you do not own. You have the option to buy further shares in the property (known as “staircasing) and, provided your lease allows it, you can staircase up to 100% ownership. When buying a shared ownership lease, it is important to fully understand the terms of the lease and your responsibilities, especially when it comes to staircasing or selling the property, as there are set procedures to follow. It is also important to know whether there is any future liability for Stamp Duty Land Tax, and this depends on how the original leaseholder elected to pay Stamp Duty Land Tax when the lease was granted.

Shared equity

Under a shared equity scheme, you own 100% of

the interest in the property, whether this is freehold or leasehold, but in addition to your mortgage, you will have an equity loan from the builder. This means that the builder provides a percentage of the purchase price (usually up to 20%) which is secured against the property. A number of trigger events exist which result in the loan becoming repayable before the end of the term. The amount to be repaid at the relevant time is linked to the value of the property. Both schemes are acceptable to certain mortgage lenders, but they have stringent requirements with which to comply, in respect of these schemes. If you are buying under an affordable housing scheme, you can be sure that your legal representative at Double and Megson has the experience necessary to guide you through the complexities of the schemes and the associated paperwork to ensure that you understand your rights and obligations.

Wishing all our customers a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

The Ten Things You Need to Know About Lasting Powers of Attorney 1. Only 5% of people in England and Wales have Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs) in place – It’s not just you. 2. Anyone over the age of 18 can make LPAs – You are not too young. 3. Banks can (and do) restrict even joint accounts on the loss of capacity of a single holder – Don’t take the chance. 4. Your Health and Welfare LPA is the only way that someone else can make care decisions for you – Don’t let social services choose who cares for you. 5. A Property and Financial LPA can be used on your instructions if you haven’t lost capacity – Get the kids to do the hard work for you.

9. LPAs must be registered before use – No chance of being defrauded.

6. A Health and Welfare LPA can let your attorneys choose to let you go with dignity – Without one, you might be treated against your wishes.

10. Your LPAs are essential for protecting your assets.

7. Your attorneys are legally required to look after your best interests – They can’t spend your money on a cruise!

These essential documents can be made quickly and easily from as little as £200*, and we offer free home visits at a time that suits you, so what are you waiting for? – call us today 01778 382723.

8. You can express your wishes in your LPAs – Helping your attorneys make the right decisions.

(*Single LPA £250, any 2 LPAs £200 each, price quoted excludes government registration fees.)

How to Use Windows File History to Backup Your User Data Backing up your data is extremely important as a hardware crash of your disk drive can result in the loss of valuable images and documents. There are many backup solutions available but what some people do not realise is that Windows 8, 8.1 and 10 include a very good backup facility without the need to purchase additional software. This is called File History. Here’s how to set this up for use: In the search bar at the bottom your screen, type in File History.

Set the various options to match what you would like to do (the default options should be fine for most users). Click Save.

Click on File History in the results.

The backup is automated and runs in the background without you having to do anything. Note too that this is a version controlled backup in that it will retain multiple versions of the same document. Handy if you want to restore a document that you update regularly to an earlier point in time.

After a short delay, whilst the tool searches for your disk drives, you will see something like this.

File backups are best done to an external disk drive rather than to the same system disk drive fitted inside your PC. This is because any disk crash could result in the loss of the main data and the backup if they are on the same device. By putting the data backup on a separate drive, this can be avoided. Click on Advanced Settings on the left panel. IT Support and Training for Home Computer Users and Small Businesses 01778 590632 07894 659479 www.litespc.co.uk info@litespc.co.uk

38

D I S C O V E R I N G

Click on the Turn On button to initiate the backup Windows will now backup your user data on a schedule as defined in the settings (so in this example every hour).

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Mark Sherwood feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have

struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Bourne & the surrounding villages and Mark is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal

satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much

a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Mark a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

| Your Finances

by Richard Ash, Director - Liberty Partnership Ltd

Retirement Finances

Whether you’re planning to retire, or if you are currently retired, you now have more choice and flexibility in how you provide for you and your family.

Recent statistics suggest that:

Pension rule sets have changed significantly in recent times. Once you’re fifty-five years old, you have complete freedom over how you use your pension pot. But you still need to ensure you have enough secure income throughout the whole of your retirement so that you can make ends meet.

• A 65 year old male has a 75% chance of living to the age of 79 and a 50% chance of reaching 87.

You may also want to make provisions for any family or dependents you have, so that they receive an income and/or inherit any unused money from your pension pot when you die. Tax rules are changing here from April 6th 2016. Currently, for those over seventy-five years of age, a tax charge is applied on death for some pensions at 45%. From this date, any lump sum paid to your beneficiary is added to the rest of their income for the year and taxed at their highest tax rate. This new rule, and the tax position of your beneficiaries, needs to be clearly understood as you plan your will and estate.

• A 65 year old female has a 75% chance of living to the age of 82 and a 50% chance of reaching 90 years of age.

The suggestion is clear, that we are all living longer, taxation needs to be considered and our savings and retirement funds will need to last for longer, which is unlikely to be achieved without a plan. So, if you wish to create or review your own plan, please contact us at Liberty Partnership for your free initial consultation.

Interest rates remain low for savers, with typical high street deposit accounts paying less than 1.5% gross (as a tax payer, you will pay tax on this return). There appears to be little in the way of optimism for those who hold such accounts, with economists predicting that rates might be kept on hold for even longer than anticipated - despite the last two years of press speculation over interest rate increases, which has sent many of those with mortgages into panic mode! Estimating how long your retirement will be is difficult, as few of us know how long we’re going to live. You need to bear this in mind when creating your financial plan, as your retirement savings may have to last longer than you think.

By Alder Veterinary Practice, Bourne

Do Animals Have Souls? My wife grew up with dogs and cats as part of the family. I have seen photos of her and a cairn terrier in a pram together, sharing a biscuit. When this dog died, she was obviously very upset. While talking about this in her school, her teacher informed her that the dog would not go to heaven, as animals do not have souls. Why should it be that one animal called Homo Sapiens, who has a shared evolution with all mammals, whose recent evolution came from apes, should be the only one to have a soul? Is it that we are the most intelligent? Are we the only animal that has feelings? Are human feelings the only ones that count? I have spent all my life associated with animals, and I find that generally, we underestimate our animals. They are more intelligent and have more ability to feel and understand than we realise. I have seen my dogs, cats and horses mourn the loss of a pack/ herd member. I regularly see the joy in animals when they are reunited with their owners after being separated. Most animals, like young children, do not worry about the future, and only use the past to react to similar situations. They do not waste time contemplating the past or future, but live in the moment,( a condition called enlightenment.)

There is an area in our brain that is responsible for this and gives us a ‘God-like’ or out of body experience when stimulated. It is this huge imagination that has allowed us to begin to understand our universe, has resulted in wondrous works of art and the modern world with medicine, air travel, communication etc. This imagination has also brought Hitler’s extermination of the Jews, the terrible atrocities in the Middle East and the greed now commonly seen in our world. Whether we accept it or not, we have to share this planet with all living things. In fact our future relies on it. We also have to share our ability to have souls.

Homo Sapiens is different from other animals in having a huge imagination and an ability for cultural evolution.

COME AND JOIN THE DEEPING DRAGONS

– MINI RUGBY AT DEEPING RUGBY CLUB Every Sunday morning at around 10.00am, you will see a steady stream of parents, a little bleary eyed stagger through the doors of Deeping Rugby Club. With a full cooked breakfast on offer, though, it doesn’t take too much to tempt them to bring their children down to the club for their weekly rugby training sessions. The aim of the Dragons is to be inclusive to all children who want to play rugby, and to teach them in a safe environment how to do it. After a free trial session, children only pay a small joining fee and £1 per training session - on match days there is no charge. We have children at the club who play regularly for their school, and children who have never touched a rugby ball in their lives, but just want to have a go. We welcome everyone, and we ensure that all children get to play regularly in matches, no matter what their level is. The most

important thing for our children is that they have FUN! Subsidised by a huge amount of fundraising throughout the year, the children have a range of social events on offer as well. The year ends with our annual camping trip to Norfolk in which we enter the Holt Rugby Festival – fun for the whole family. Who can play? Boys and girls from ages 5 to 11 years.

for the tuck shop after training. There is a full breakfast menu with teas and coffees. The bar opens at 11.00am.

What time and where? Every Sunday at 10.00am. We’re situated next to the Deeping School Sixth Form Block on the Spalding Road.

Want to start playing again! We have a Junior squad, a Veterans squad, a Ladies team and a First team. Everyone is welcome to join our training sessions on Tuesday and Thursday nights at 7.00pm.

What do I wear? Comfortable PE kit and trainers. If you like it, you’ll need boots and, depending on age, a mouth guard. What should I bring? A bottle of water, and some money

| Police Patrol by Bourne’s Sergeant 503 Rick Mosley

Sergeant Mosley’s Musings Be Safe at Christmas For a dishonest few, the festive season is a time of criminal opportunity. Homes are left unoccupied, expensive presents are often there for the taking and, with a sense of wellbeing, your guard may well be down. By being aware of the risks and taking a few simple precautions you can prevent theft in the first place – and get on with enjoying the festive season. Christmas security tips • It’s obvious, but don’t leave gifts on display under the Christmas tree for days on end. Passers-by can see your presents under the tree. Keep the goodies locked away until the last moment. • Expecting a gift delivery? Make sure there is someone at home to receive it or a neighbour who can look after it until you return, rather than having it left on the doorstep. • Leave putting your gift boxes or wrapping outside for the refuse collectors until the last moment, as it announces to thieves that goods worth stealing are inside the house. • If you are hiding larger and more expensive gifts until Christmas Day, make sure they are fully secure. For example, make sure that a bicycle hidden in your shed is padlocked securely.

If you’re going away • Many people spend part of the Christmas period visiting friends or relatives. Burglars are always looking for properties that appear unoccupied. • Cancel the milk, newspapers and any other deliveries. • Don’t leave expensive presents on show. • Buy a couple of timers for lights and the radio. • Be wary of changing your answer phone message or setting up e-mail auto responder messages that can be connected to your address. • Don’t tweet or Facebook that you’re going away. • Lock doors, windows, sheds and outbuildings. • Set the ringtone on your landline as low as possible, or off.

• Leave a key with a neighbour who can stop by occasionally and check everything is alright.

If you suspect burglary at a neighbour’s property • If you are keeping an eye on a neighbour’s property over the Christmas period and you see evidence there has been a break-in, do not enter the house – the burglar may still be inside and you may disturb evidence. Call the police and try to contact your neighbour.

Christmas shopping safety tips • The growth of smartphones, mobiles, e-readers and tablets means many of us now walk around with hundreds of pounds’ worth of electronic gadgetry on us. Add to that Christmas present purchases and you can see why the festive season is so fruitful for pickpockets and thieves. • Pickpockets love crowds, so be extra careful when doing your Christmas shopping (and in the New Year sales). • Keep handbags zipped at all times, with purses at the bottom. Don’t leave wallets in back pockets. • Never leave valuables on show in your car. Lock them in the boot. • While supermarket shopping, don’t leave handbags or anything else valuable in the trolley while you’re off scanning the shelves. • Be aware of anyone standing too close to you at the ATM, as they may be reading your PIN number. Shield the keypad with your hand as you type it in.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

“Treats for my Sweet”

(or rather “one for you and two for me!”) “Christmas is coming and the wallet’s looking fat”. Well, as potential receivers of Christmas goodies, let’s hope so. The lemming-like dash will be dragging us towards Bourne’s wonderful shops, or maybe Queensgate, very soon, or more likely, to the wonderful world of Amazon! Before that, however, it’s worth remembering that, on the whole, we Brits are pretty spectacular at splashing out … on ourselves, (if recent research is to be believed!). A survey by VoucherCodes.co.uk found that British people spend an average of £62 per week on treats for themselves, with the impulse to succumb to the temptation peaking around lunchtime on a Saturday. Purchases range from expensive designer clothes and shoes, through bottles of wine to bars of chocolate, with men spending a third more per month than women.

The research found that people’s fondness for treats increased as the week went on, spending the least on Monday, gradually increasing up to the Saturday peak. The “most frivolous” of people, splashing out on treats once the money goes into their account, are found in Swansea, followed by the residents of Aberdeen and Belfast. The good folk of Wolverhampton, on the other hand, are the most cautious, with less than one in five splashing out on themselves on pay day. This research would seem to show how closely our mood and external lifestyle factors have such an impact on how we treat ourselves, as we head towards the weekend.

Northborough Primary School … in the Spotlight

New Headteacher, Mr Mallott, comments, “I feel very proud to be leading what I believe is a school with immense potential. I am determined to secure an outstanding school for the future. Furthermore, I have the very highest expectations of all the staff and pupils. It is my intention that we work together, to raise standards in every area, helping all pupils achieve their full potential.” So what’s been happening this year? Year 4 - ‘Water,Water Everywhere’. Through cross curricular links, the children have studied how the water in the world is re-used and is a continuous cycle. They have made collages, learnt songs, and created simple filtration systems. Through reading the Water Horse, they have been introduced to legends and are now creating descriptive poetry and story openings.

Year 4 - Stibbington Residential A great opportunity for all to enjoy their local environment and hot chocolate and cake, to help the nights go smoothly! Activities included pond-dipping, creating animal masks to act out food cycles, and classifying rocks and learning microscope skills – “a fantastic trip”. Year 5 – Anglo-Saxons and the Vikings Through research, they have found out where the Saxons settled and what their villages would have been like. The children then worked together in groups to create models to demonstrate their learning. Year 6 – Sporting opportunities Already this term, they have experienced a basketball festival where they joined classes from two other primary schools, at Arthur Mellows Village College, to be coached by students in the skills of dribbling, passing and shooting. The children thoroughly enjoyed the experience and the chance to

play friendly matches against other schools. They have also taken part in hockey, football and netball competitions. Other activities Year 5 have been finding out about the Church’s year and for their last lesson this term, reflected on why Remembrance is marked every year in the Christian faith. We have had fun celebrating harvest and raising money for the Mustard Seed Project at the same time. Year 2 hosted a “potato party”, where we invited members of the church community to come and eat potatoes and share some Bible stories with us. We have also taken part in an event which reminds us we are part of a multi-faith city. Members of our Indian drumming group played in Cathedral Square to represent Diwali.

| Motoring - monthly advice from Tom Ingram

Seasons Greetings from Big Tom! Wishing all readers of my motoring section a happy and peaceful Christmas As 2015 comes to a close, I look back at a very exciting year and anticipate more wonderful experiences for customers of my driving school. I have been very fortunate to witness dozens of happy customer relationships with pupils and their family members. My driving school is set to continue expanding in the areas that we serve, and with the necessary personnel to satisfy the growing need. Personally, I continue to strive to offer the best driving tuition for my customers by keeping standards high, my own CPD

up-to-date, and the goals in the BIG TOM Customer Charter ever present. The safety of our customers has always been, and will continue to be, the number one priority. If I had three wishes for the New Year, they would be for all drivers to….. • Add just five minutes to their planned journey time. • Drive like they did when they passed their driving test. • Adapt their driving to reflect changing driving conditions. Lastly, big congratulations to all my customers who have passed their driving test this year … and stay safe!
