Welcome to our February edition... So, farewell “Dry January”, and that de-tox wasn’t too bad after all, was it? … for some! This month, we’re expecting the worst of the winter weather, if the “old wives tales” and the Met. Office are to be believed, so make sure you’re well wrapped up and everything is in place for a fabulous Valentine’s Day. - The Top 10 Aphrodisiac Foods (DO try this at home!)

The food you consume can have a direct impact on your sex life, affecting your hormones, brain chemistry and energy and stress levels. Some foods have psychoactive properties, others arouse because they are psychologically suggestive, and some can actually increase blood flow to the genitals.

ASPARAGUS

An English herbalist from the 17th century, Nicholas Culpepper, wrote that asparagus “stirs up lust in man and woman.” It is a great source of potassium, fibre, vitamin B6, vitamins A and C, thiamin and folic acid.

ALMONDS

Its shape gives it away! The Aztecs called the avocado ahuacuatl, or “testicle tree”, seeing the fruit hanging in pairs on the tree as resembling testicles. Avocado is rich with folic acid, vitamin B6 and potassium.

BANANAS

By its shape, the connection with sexuality is quite obvious, but bananas are loaded with potassium, magnesium and B vitamins. It also contains chelating minerals and the bromeliad enzyme, said to enhance the male libido.

BASIL

Basil has a fantastic aroma that is said to have an aphrodisiac effect; it is also very stimulating. Using sweet basil in a pasta sauce will be sure to get your heart racing!

Pure chocolate, the king of natural aphrodisiacs, contains a host of compounds including anandamide, the psyochoactive feel-good chemical, and PEA (phenylethylamine), the “love chemical,” which releases dopamine in the pleasure centres of the brain and peaks during orgasm.

Throughout the centuries, almonds were regarded as fertility symbols. The aroma of almond supposedly arouses passion in females and provides high doses of vitamin E, magnesium and even fibre.

Figs are steeped in history, being mentioned in the Bible (Adam and Eve wore fig leaves to cover their private parts), whilst the ancient Greeks held them as sacred, associating them with love and fertility.

Very strong smelling and perhaps a bit of a turn-off, but likely to provide added strength to the male, as the allicin in the garlic will increase levels of blood flow in vital regions!

Oysters may be thought an aphrodisiac because of their high zinc content, which helps produce sperm and increases libido. Raw oysters are best served with a glass of chilled Champagne for a truly romantic meal!

HONEY

Honey is a great source of boron, a trace mineral that helps the body use and metabolize oestrogen, the female sex hormone, and this mineral may also enhance testosterone levels in the blood, the hormone responsible for promoting sex drive and orgasm in both men and women.

Mustard Seed Project Market Deeping couple Geoff and Rita Fowler – who run the charity Mustard Seed Project – were among the happiest people on the planet when 2016 arrived, as they looked forward to a brighter future for the residents of the Kenyan slum community they support. Thanks to a generous donation from Allen and Nesta Ferguson Foundation, construction has begun on the next phase of the new school they are having built in Mgongeni. ‘We could not believe it when we were told the news,’ says Rita. ‘Having these extra classrooms will mean that we can take more pupils and give them the quality education that Miche Bora

It’s great to see their enthusiasm and appreciation of what their children are achieving.’ During a recent visit to Kenya, Rita and Geoff were preparing to set up a clinic within the school for the pupils and their families; attending meetings with building contractors and furniture makers; negotiating help for another charity; running teacher training sessions; interviewing teaching applicants; and catching up with the progress of the young people’s football team and boxing club.

‘We work almost non-stop while we are out there,’ says Geoff. ‘The locals need support as they lack the funding, expertise and confidence to make things happen for themselves. Thurlby Man in Marathon Challenge for MS-UK Glenn Martin tells his story: I am fortunate enough to be running the London Marathon in 2016, to raise awareness and funds for the Multiple Sclerosis Society, “MS-UK”, who have provided fantastic support to my sister, Sarah, who was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, six years ago. There are currently around 100,000 people in the UK who live with this disease, and I would love to be able to raise funds to support this charity who I feel are committed to ensuring every individual is treated with care and dignity. Photographic Exhibition The Deepings Camera Club was founded in 1985 and meets every Wednesday between September and the end of May with organised outings for members during the summer months, and is considered by many to be one of the leading camera clubs in Lincolnshire. This season, the club celebrated its thirtieth anniversary and, as in other years, has done well in local, national and international competitions with many members’ images being displayed in various national and international galleries and salons. Membership of the club is open to all ages with a current membership of over sixty. Between them, they have a wide range of photographic skills in all aspects of photography that they are willing to pass on to any new member. This is the thirteenth annual exhibition to be held by the club, entry is free and as in previous years, visiting members of the public will be able to cast their vote for their favourite images. So, if you have an interest in photography, like looking at photographs, use a camera and want to get ideas to improve your own photography, then please come along to the exhibition, where club members will be available to talk to you and answer your questions. Nursery nurse clocks up 44 years caring for special babies Nursery Nurse Sue Fisher has retired from her role in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Peterborough City Hospital after 44 years’ service.

She was bid a fond farewell by colleagues after her last 12 hour shift caring for premature or poorly babies and their anxious parents.

Sue played an integral part in the setting up of the Outreach team for NICU, which involved her visiting parents who have had a baby cared for in the unit at their home to provide ongoing support and advice. She also set up reunions for parents who have been through the same ordeal to help them support each other.

Sue (62), who lives in Deeping St James, near Peterborough, began her career at Peterborough Maternity Unit in what was then called the Special Care Baby Unit, in 1971. She completed her nursery nurse training at Leicester College & Day Nurseries. She said: “I was terrified on my first day. But I very quickly began to love working with babies and their parents. The most important thing I can do is to make parents feel that they can leave their baby in safe hands. “I have seen some fantastic developments in the care of premature and poorly newborns during my career. When I first began, babies born at 30 weeks in the womb stood little chance of surviving, whereas now, thanks to progression

Jo Bennis, Chief Nurse at Peterborough and Stamford Hospitals, said: “On behalf of the Trust board of directors, I would like to thank Sue for dedicating the past 44 years to caring for what I imagine runs into thousands of babies who have had a difficult start to life. The care and support she has given to those babies and their parents is truly remarkable and she will be greatly missed. We wish her a fantastic retirement.”

Exercise should never hurt or make you feel lousy. Stop exercising immediately and seek advice if you feel dizzy or short of breath; develop chest pain or pressure; break out in a cold sweat, or experience pain; also stop if a joint is red, swollen, or tender to touch.You may simply need to scale back or try another activity.

“Riding Along on the Crest of a … Gang Show”! This month sees the Stamford and Bourne District Scouts perform their 31st Annual District Gang Show (registered as “Deeping Gang Show”). The first ever gang show in the district was in 1986, and since then, the Scouts have presented an annual extravaganza of music, song and dance for everyone to enjoy. The event provides local young people

involved with Scouting and Guiding the opportunity to gain considerable self-confidence and participate in teamwork. This year sees a small, young cast, full of enthusiasm and talent, sing over forty spectacular songs from “rock and roll” to “The Sound of Music” with the traditional “Crest of a Wave” amongst them.

Many of us made New Years Resolutions and some will have included eating healthily and exercising regularly. Lambs of Stamford set to Close Down One of Stamford’s most established and popular firms is to cease trading early in April. The gap created by the loss of both Lambs China, Glass and Cookware on St. Mary’s Street, and Lambs Hardware on St Peter’s Street will be enormous, bringing to a sad end almost seven decades of high quality trading. The shops have been an established landmark, and retiring partners, Richard Stapling and his sister Janet Brown, would like to thank their many customers, some of whom are now second and third generation regulars; customers, who over the years, have had wedding lists placed there and then followed up with christening, birthday and anniversary gifts, purchased from Lambs.

The Windows Club and the WinFix 10 Utility The Windows Club (http://www.thewindowsclub. com/) is an excellent source of information for Microsoft Windows. They also have a library of tools including one for automatically fixing issues with Windows 10. Given the amount of work I am currently undertaking, digging people out of a large hole that Microsoft excavated for them with a very unreliable upgrade process from Windows 7 and 8 to Windows 10, this tool may well help people address issues on their systems. To download the tool go to: http://www. thewindowsclub.com/fixwin-for-windows-10 Unlike most applications this tool does not need to be installed and will run straight off your hard disk, or memory stick; just double click on the FixWin_10.exe file.

| Consumer Advice By Eileen Le Voi www.safelocaltrades.com As I write this, we have yet to have the usual frosts and snow that winter brings, but we do have the promise of a cold snap and possibly some snow. With this in mind, February may prove to be a pretty cold month but, who knows? The end of the winter months may still prove to be the warmest on record. More than any other month, you need to watch the local conditions and act accordingly. Don’t always do what the seed packet says; make a judgement, depending on the ground conditions as you don’t want all of your seeds to rot.

Stay safe and say ‘No’ to Doorstep Traders Rogue traders cause misery for thousands of people each year; most of whom are the elderly and vulnerable in our communities. These uninvited traders call at properties offering to do home maintenance work, such as roofing, tarmacing and paving, garden and tree surgery, insulation, general building work, installing burglar alarms and other services. The work or service offered can sometimes be unnecessary, overpriced, of a poor standard or not done at all. Typically, they have no formal training to carry out the work offered and some may have links with distraction burglars. It is important that people have the confidence to say NO to doorstep traders and take the time to think about the service being offered. The following is advice on how people can avoid being scammed by rogue doorstep traders: Be cautious; if a trader knocks at your door, DO NOT agree to on the spot house repairs, without taking advice.

Parsnips do not germinate easily, so a later sowing when the soil is warmer may help. To warm up the soil for planting next month, cover it with fleece or polythene and, if you haven’t already, add well-rotted manure or compost to the prepared soil. Shallots can be planted in shallow drills about seven inches apart so that the tips are just showing; water and keep weed-free. A large variety of seeds can be sown indoors such as broad beans, Brussels, leeks, onions, salad leaves, tomatoes, peas, spinach, summer cabbage –to name but a few.

Be wary of special offers or warnings that your house is unsafe. Don’t allow anyone to pressure you into agreeing to have work carried out; if you ask them to leave and they don’t, contact the police on 999. Do not make snap decisions; if you feel that any work is required on your property, take time to talk to family or neighbours before you make a decision.

All of your seed potatoes for the year should have been purchased by the end of this month and spread out in egg boxes or seed trays for “chitting” in a cool, light room. It is recommended to remove all but three of the “chits”, as it is believed that this produces larger potatoes. The compost heap might benefit from a bit of attention. Rake it through with a fork to aerate it, add water if it seems dry and then re-cover it to keep it warm. Another job that can be done is to spray fruit trees, whilst they are still dormant, with a plant-oil based winter wash to help prevent aphids and scale insects. If you know where you are planting your brassicas, check the pH and, if needs be, add some lime to bring it up to 6.5 or 7. Also add some extra manure to the potato patch. Happy gardening!

It really must feel like we keep on talking about pensions and to be fair … we do! The rules around pensions have changed significantly over the last few years and will have a major impact both on how you save for retirement and access your money once you retire.

You may have heard about “pension freedom” New pension rules introduced in April 2015 have given people far more choice over what they can do with their pension pots.

What used to happen? For most people, when you retired, you could take up to 25% of your pension as tax-free cash and the rest had to be turned into a retirement income by buying an annuity.

The new rules: ■ There are several ways you can now use your pension pot. You can: ■ Buy a guaranteed income for life – an annuity. ■ Invest your pension in funds designed to provide you with a flexible retirement income – called ‘drawdown’ (the income is not guaranteed for life).

■ Take small cash sums from your pension when you want them. ■ Take all your pension as cash in one go. ■ Mix the above options.

You will need to consider your tax position: If you take cash out of your pension, then 25% of the withdrawal is likely to be tax-free (the other 75% is the taxable element). The taxable element is added to the rest of your income for the year and you pay Income Tax on this in the usual way. If you take a large sum of cash, you could push your income into a higher tax bracket and end up paying higher-rate or even additional-rate Income Tax on the lump sum. This increase in income may also mean you are no longer eligible for certain benefits which you’re claiming. You need to be careful when selecting your retirement options and, if you have a pension, you should now be thinking about your options. Sergeant Mosley’s Musings Domestic Abuse Domestic abuse and its effect on the victim I find disgusting, in that someone can abuse another who they allegedly ‘love’, in order to gain control. From December 29th 2015, the law was changed to close the gap around patterns of coercive and controlling behaviour as domestic abuse. Police are now expected to recognise, record and investigate offences under s.76 of the Serious Crime Act 2015, namely any pattern of incidents of “coercive” and “controlling” behaviour, violence or abuse between those aged 16 or over in an intimate or family relationship. “Controlling behaviour” is a range of acts designed to make a person subordinate and/ or dependent, by isolating them from sources of support, exploiting their resources and capacities for personal gain, depriving them of the means needed for independence, resistance and escape, and regulating their everyday behaviour. “Coercive behaviour” is acts of assault, threats, humiliation and intimidation or other abuse that is used to harm, punish, or frighten their victim. This definition includes so called “honour-based violence”, female genital mutilation (FGM) and forced marriage, and is clear that victims are not confined to one gender or ethnic group. Domestic abuse can take place anywhere, not just in the home. Research has shown that it is rarely a one-off event. Abuse tends to happen more and more over time - each time getting more serious. Whatever the extent of the violence, the abuse almost always leaves those suffering it to feel frightened, isolated, humiliated or ashamed. Types of abuse can include, but are not restricted to:

• Monitoring their time (even in the toilet). • M onitoring a person via online communication tools or spyware. • C ontrolling aspects of everyday life i.e. where they go, who they see, what they wear, when they sleep. • D epriving access to support services, specialist support or medical services. • Control of finances – punitive allowances. • Threats to harm or kill. • Threats to harm another e.g. a child. • T hreats to reveal, share or publish private information. • Assaults, rape. • C riminal damage – destruction of household goods. • P reventing access to transport or from pursuing a working life. Discovering . . . the

Deeping Gate bridge

ÂŠ REX NEEDLE 2016 Bridges date back to the earliest times when even the most primitive communities created crossings over rivers and streams following their favourite paths to make hunting and gathering easier, using whatever materials there were to hand such as fallen trees. These constructions were primitive until the Romans came up with an architectural device over 2,000 years ago to carry a path over a narrow width known as the Roman arch, thus providing the fundamental principle on which all future bridges were based. The pack horse bridge is one such development, built to carry pack horses loaded with side bags or panniers across a river rather than take the long way round which could involve a diversion of many miles. Such bridges therefore have narrow masonry arches and low parapets in order not to interfere with the horseâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s load and were often built on the trade routes across Europe, a design also followed in England before the coming of the turnpike roads and canals in the 18th century, and the Deeping Gate bridge which crosses the River Welland on the B1162 is popularly known by that name. This 17th century structure built mainly of limestone has 38

three arches with half round parapets and stands on the parish boundary between Deeping Gate and Deeping St James. Refuges or alcoves were placed over each of the cut-waters or forward edges of the piers where, as the name implies, horses loaded with goods could wait to enable carts and carriages to pass. The bridge dates from 1651 and is now Grade II listed as being of historic and architectural importance although the middle arch has a brick vault and appears to have been partially rebuilt. The bridge was constructed in an age when horses for transport in all its forms ruled the highways and the structure is no longer practical for todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s continual streams of motorised traffic, the roadway over it narrowing to a mere 13 feet wide without a footpath and now carries a weight restriction of 7.5 tonnes. Despite this precaution, the stone structure has been at risk from heavy vehicles on several occasions, the last incident being in January 2015 when part of the parapet on the Deeping St James side was demolished by a lorry which left debris scattered over the road. The damage has since been repaired and safety cones placed along the carriageway as a warning to vehicles passing this way but as long as careless driving persists, further mishaps would appear to be inevitable. GET TO KNOW YOUR DOG For the last year, I have been training my chihuahua, Phoebe. At the same time, two of my sons, my daughter and my wife have been training our other dogs. Dog training has changed a lot over the last twenty years with a greater understanding of dog behaviour. The idea of dominance and forcing changes of behaviour has gone, and has been replaced by rewardbased training, producing willing co-operation.The whole idea is to build a relationship â&#x20AC;Ś and have fun. Most people do not want to compete at high level agility or obedience, but do want to be able to have some control and co-operation from their dogs. We have had such fun training our dogs. Training (or rather, attempting to train) a chihuahua was a new challenge for me. I seem to have problems controlling my feet around such a little dog! It is also amazing how many treats a little dog can eat. She particularly likes smoked mackerel which is great for training â&#x20AC;Ś but not so good smelling of fish for the rest of the day. Besides training the basics (walking on the lead, sitting on command, recall and walking off the lead) we have done trick training and fun agility. We have taught our dogs to touch things with their nose or paws and then used this to make people think they can find things on command (secretly using the scent from treats). We have taught our dogs to weave between our legs and jump through our arms .Recently, we have combined a bit of agility and trickery and have our dogs jumping over and going under each other.

the person they want to be with above all other things . It does take time and patience, but it does not have to be forever just enough to be able to set up that important relationship. No matter how much you think you know about training dogs, it is good to train with other people and other dogs. There will be classes to suit any ability. All dogs and owners should experience this basic training to make the best of their relationships. There are many good trainers in the area and you can ask your local vet for more information.

The main point of all this is building a strong relationship with your pet. At the same time, it is a lot of fun (as long as you do not take it too seriously ).When you can influence your pet with rewards and you play and have fun with them, then you become

Baston C.of E. Primary School Take a peek around the classroom door… Baston Church of England Primary School is a very special place. We are a hard-working, happy school and our children are at the heart of all we do. All the members of staff are dedicated and caring. We help our children to diminish their weaknesses, while emphasising all of the things they do so well. We work together to achieve the very best from our children, and we guide them carefully in the pursuit of their dreams. Our children are well-behaved and respectful. They have an excellent attitude to work; they realise the high expectations set for them and have high expectations of themselves and others. We all love to learn. Let us give you a flavour of what it looks like in our school. Children in Reception are solving number problems. They have been challenged to order the numbers on each crate and then add the correct number of children into each one. The ‘skipper’ in the hat has to count each crate to check there are enough children in each one… very tricky!

The Year Four classroom is empty! The children are out at Brudenell Park, “geo-caching” as part of their survival topic. They are learning to navigate from point to point using six figure grid references. Let’s hope they find the hidden treasure! Year Five is a hive of activity. The children are writing after visiting Southwell Workhouse yesterday. Their Writer’s Toolboxes are brimming with brilliant words, phrases and “Magpied Treasure” to help them write confidently - just as if they had been transported back in time. Children in Year Six are sharing their learning with their family and friends in their “Love 2 Learn” morning. The centrepiece of their work has been a fantastic dance, based around their “Conflict” topic. It was so amazing that they won a competition staged by the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden. Their prize was a trip to see “The Nutcracker” at Christmas, performed by the Royal Ballet - a real celebration of their hard work and talent!

In Year One, children are learning about the different plants and animals found in their local environment in their weekly “Forest School” session. They have built homes for the animals they have seen in our forest area. Who will move in? I wonder. As part of their maths learning, Year Two are finding out all about different shapes and are using all kinds of different materials to make their own models including marshmallows and spaghetti! When we pop around the corner into Year Three, we discover there has been a catastrophe! Mount Vesuvius has just erupted and the children are in role as reporters, exploring the recent events of the day. I hope they reach their deadline, ready for publication! 42

A Glimpse at Mexico with Big Tom Welcome to my motoring section for February, and didn’t we have some very odd weather throughout Christmas time? You have to spare a thought for the poor people “up-north” with all that flooding. Although it was mild here, my family spent our Christmas in a slightly warmer temperature of 30-35 degrees in Mexico!

As important as it is to continually strive to improve road safety (my regular readers will be only too aware of my views on that subject), it is worth acknowledging that the 2013 and 2014 road deaths comparison between nations, puts the UK second only to Sweden (Mexico being a long way down the list).

As we travelled around on the roads, it was noticeable how much police presence there was in Mexico, compared to here in the UK. Police over there regularly stop vehicles, search lorries, and have regular police checkpoints in the roads. The “307” was our local dual-carriageway running down the east coast, (if anyone reading knows it). They have regular maximum speed limit changes, make regular use of speed awareness signs as you drive along and, unlike our dual-carriageways, they come with cycle lanes.

Do take care on the roads during these winter months, make sure your tyres are well maintained and your fluid levels are kept topped up in the engine. Wishing you all safe driving. Tom from BIG TOM Driving School

But for me, by far the most dangerous feature of their dual-carriageways was the option given to do a complete U-turn in a break in the central reservation (see image for an example). We have our own problems with the breaks in the central reservation on the A1 between Peterborough and Newark with vehicles crossing the A1 – over in Mexico they use them to do a U-turn!
