Welcome to our March edition... Mother’s Day already! “Life doesn’t come with a manual. It comes with a mother” is an old saying which springs to mind at this time of the year. We all need help in finding our way through all the various ups and downs of life, and there, right from day one has been that wonderful (sometimes), smiling (often) and loving (always) lady we are proud to call “Mum”.

This month, we include several “mum-related features” and also look towards Easter, fast approaching at the end of the month. Things to make and places to go are included right here. Owners of exotic animals can read about a fantastic facility for their creatures in Thurlby.

Let me just add my little offering, amongst all this Mother’s Day malarkey. By the time a woman eventually realizes that her mother was always right, she has a daughter who thinks that she’s always wrong!

MOTHER’S DAY is the one day when we take time to express our love and gratitude for the women who have devoted their lives to making ours safe and happy. Some have been famous, most are not, but all have been, and continue to be, special. MARY, THE MOTHER OF JESUS. “The Virgin Mary” has long been depicted as a caring mother and a role model for everyone. She also plays an important role throughout Christian history in providing us with a female that’s right at the heart of events. Christianity, after all, can be a fairly male-dominated affair.

She buried five of her nine children, raised a president, (John F. Kennedy), two U.S. senators, and presided over one of the most famous families in American historyall with elegance and dignity. “I looked on child-rearing not only as a work of love and duty but as a profession that was fully as interesting and challenging as any honourable profession in the world,” Kennedy once said. When she died in 1995, at the age of 104, she had 28 grandchildren and 41 great-grandchildren.

In 1923, Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon married the second son of King George V and was the first commoner to legally marry into the royal family in several centuries. Their daughters, Elizabeth and Margaret, were born in 1926 and 1930, respectively. When Elizabeth refused to leave England during the London Blitz in World War II, even enduring the bombing of Buckingham Palace, her spirit was an inspiration to many who continued to hold her in high regard until her death at the age of 101 in March 2002.

- With her husband, Pierre, Marie Curie was the pioneer in researching radioactivity. When he died suddenly, she refused a government pension and instead, took his place as a professor at the University of Paris. She was awarded a Nobel Prize for her work, then became the first person to win a second Nobel Prize, and she is the only Nobel Prize winner who is also the mother of another Nobel Prize winner, Irène Joliot-Curie.

| Food How to make a Simnel Cake Why not treat the family to this traditional Easter delicacy - a fruit cake with a marzipan coating?

Method 1. Roll out one-third of the almond paste. Using the base of the cake tin as a guide, cut out an 18 centimetre round. 2. Grease the cake tin and line the bottom and side with greaseproof paper. 3. Combine all the cake ingredients in a bowl. Beat well until thoroughly blended. Spoon half of the cake mixture into the prepared tin and smooth the surface. Top with the round of almond paste. 4. Spoon the remaining cake mixture on top and level the surface. 5. Bake in a preheated oven at 150°C/gas mark 2 for two and a quarter hours or until golden brown and firm to the touch.

6. Cover the top of the cake with greaseproof paper if it is browning too quickly. Leave to cool for 10 minutes, then remove from the tin, and leave to cool completely.

For the cake: • 175 g soft butter or margarine, plus extra for greasing • 175 g light muscovado sugar • 3 eggs • 175 g self-raising flour • 175 g sultanas • 90 g currants • 90 g glacé cherries, quartered, rinsed, and dried

7. Warm the jam and use to brush the top of the cake. 8. To decorate the cake, roll out half of the remaining almond paste and use the tin to cut out an 18 centimetre round. Put on top of the jam and crimp the edges. Roll the remaining almond paste into 11 even-sized balls. Place around the edge of the cake, attaching them with egg white. 9. Brush the tops of the balls and the almond paste with egg white. Place under a hot grill for one to two minutes, until the balls are golden.

“Keen-wah” or “Kwin-oh-a”? Here’s Your Answer! As our country’s much-lamented linguistic prowess continues its decline, alongside our apparent lusting for ever more adventurous foreign foods, there comes a point when action will be needed. No surprise then, that the Co-operative, (Remember ”It’s all at the Co-op …now”?) has collaborated with the Oxford English Dictionary to identify the top twenty most commonly mispronounced foreign foods, and provide a definitive guide. The Co-op has launched a training guide for its staff to assist customers, alongside shelf signs and notices at the check-out to help customers with the names. There is a cautionary maxim, “If you can’t pronounce it, don’t eat it”, by which some diffident individuals seem to live their lives. Hopefully, the list taken from the Co-op guide and shown here, will encourage more people than ever before to discover the delights of, for instance, French fish stew, (Bouillabaisse), or Peruvian-style fish cured in citrus juice, (Ceviche).

Friends of Chernobyl’s Children – An Appeal 1986 saw the world’s worst nuclear accident at Chernobyl in northern Ukraine. Since then, thousands of children, both there and in neighbouring Belarus, continue to suffer, as a result of cancers and deformities, resulting from their exposure to high radiation levels. Friends of Chernobyl’s Children (Registered Charity No. 1122824) www.focc-helpston.com Children entering into the FOCC programme spend four weeks each year in the UK for some respite from their harsh daily lives. Hosted by local families, they gain tremendous advantages from their month away from Belarus. Many, who whilst at home have the day-to-day responsibility for one or more siblings, can relax, have fun and enjoy being a regular child. Caring host families provide fresh, uncontaminated food - especially milk, fruit and vegetables, which in Belarus are grown in radiated soil. There are numerous opportunities for the children to improve their English-speaking too - a real boost to their future prospects. Health checks, eye tests and visits to the dentist are made available. New and quality used clothes are collected throughout the year to ensure that each child and its siblings have warm clothes to last the coming winter. Having

arrived with nothing, the children return home with a pack of clothes, a year’s supply of vitamins, plus soap, toiletries, vegetable seeds and pre-packed food items. “Discovering Magazines” sales executive, Becky Kane, and her partner, Gareth, will be hosting a young girl, Sabina, for a month in June, as one of these incredibly generous “host families”, and are anxious to raise as much money as they possibly can. To that end, they are holding a Mini Charity Ball on March 12th 2016, (7pm – midnight) at The Copperfield Suite, The Angel Hotel, Bourne. Crafting Evolution Stamford Handmade Limited are a “not-forprofit” creative group of local artists, crafters and lovers of all things handmade. Supported by a membership of dedicated and hard-working crafters, the group has been in existence for more than six years. Starting out as the Stamford Artisans Guild, the group has grown and evolved over time, and to reflect this evolution, the membership decided to have a change of name starting in 2015. To help support the members, the group have reduced their membership fees by 50% this year, and have also reduced their stall fees. Craftspeople often put in hundreds of hours of work for which they will never get paid, so this is one way of giving them a helping hand. Supported by a hard working committee, Stamford Handmade organise regular art and craft events in the local area, at Stamford Arts Centre, Victoria Hall Oundle, Oakham Castle and the Discovery Den at Ferry Meadows, Peterborough.

Deeping St. Nicholas lady, Sally Woolner, might have just the thing you need, to make a very special event just that bit more special! Here, she takes up the story … Ceramics with Grace is a small, local pottery painting business. As a former Level 4 nursery nurse, I have always enjoyed working with children and their families. Since having my eldest daughter, Grace, in 2013 and wanting to be at home with her, setting up this business was a dream come true. I have since had another daughter and, like my family, my business seems to be growing all the time! I just love working with families, to create beautiful pieces of pottery that mean so much to the recipient, being a perfect keepsake as well as a potentially useful item. The main focus of my work is children’s hand and foot prints on to pottery items and then finishing them off, according to the specific ideas of each family. I have a range of items such as mugs, plates, vases and baubles and have made hands/feet into a variety of things such as rockets, elephants and reindeer. Have you ever wondered why Easter Sunday is celebrated on a different date each year? Easter is a time when Christians reflect on the resurrection of Christ. In the Christian world, Easter is the holiest and oldest of all Christian festivals. It is also the climax and centre of a liturgical year where all holy days point. Easter is the anniversary of Christ’s resurrection and should be commemorated on the same day every year. So why is there no constant date with Easter? The date for Easter celebration is computed by the church with the help of astrology. It is a moveable feast, meaning it is not fixed in relation to the civil calendar. It is dependent on the cycle of the moon, and the Vernal Equinox. The early church fathers wanted to keep the observance of Easter in correlation with the Jewish holiday, Passover. The Jewish holiday calendar is based on solar and lunar cycles. The First Council of Nicaea (325 AD) established the date

of Easter as specifically “The first Sunday after the first full moon after the Vernal or Spring Equinox”. The Vernal Equinox is, of course, the first day of the zodiac sign of Aries. So, the date of Easter is the first Sunday after the first full moon after the Vernal or Spring Equinox. Can’t we just pluck a fixed date out of the air and agree on it? Both governments and churches have tried to do that. Secularists have suggested that Easter should fall on the second Sunday of April each year. The World Council of Churches in 1997 suggested replacing the current equation-based system with direct astronomical observation.

Are you getting the results you expected from your fitness training? Many people undertake exercise with specific fitness targets in mind, and train without fully appreciating the physical effects of the type of exercise they choose. Our body’s metabolism provides fuel to muscles during physical activity in two distinct ways, dependent upon the type of exercise we undertake, and the visual results of each training style can be very different. Any physical activity you can maintain for a sustained period at low to moderate intensity, such as walking, jogging, cycling, etc, is considered as aerobic exercise. The term aerobic refers to the ability of your cardiovascular system (lungs, heart, and arteries) to supply adequate volumes of oxygen to your muscles to provide the fuel required to maintain the activity. True aerobic exercise consumes body fat and is, therefore, ideal training to reduce weight, improve stamina and maintain general fitness. High impact, high intensity exercise, such as lifting heavy weights or sprinting short distances at high speed, is known as anaerobic exercise and by its nature requires a more immediate fuel supply, which cannot be provided on demand via the cardiovascular system The term anaerobic refers to the ability of our muscles to release carbohydrate in the form of glucose on demand, to fuel the high impact activity. â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Advice from The Wellhead Practice This month, Rachael Baker, one of two registered chiropodists / podiatrists at the Wellhead Practice, explains some common, everyday foot conditions. Rachael brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the practice, having worked in the NHS and private practice in this field for nearly forty years. Q: Rachael, what is one of the more everyday conditions you help with? A: Simple nail cutting. Many patients really struggle to trim their own nails. This can be due to reduced flexibility, preventing patients from reaching their feet, or perhaps due to osteoarthritis of the hands, making it hard to hold nail clippers. Even inadequate eye sight can pose a problem. Here, we offer a shorter, dedicated nail cutting appointment (ÂŁ20) which is ideal if your feet are generally in good condition, and you only need a trim. Q: What else do you commonly see? A: Thick nails. Trauma to the nail bed, perhaps from dropping something onto the toe or even poorly fitting shoes, can

cause these. Treatment involves reducing the thickness, using the nail drill and offering advice on things like footwear, to help reduce recurrence. Fungal nails. These affect one or many nails with a discoloured and thickened appearance and are often crumbly in texture. Treatment is by applying a topical lacquer to the nail or via oral medication. As the fungus has to grow out of the nail, treatment can take over twelve months. Involuted nails. These curve round and press into the sides of your toe. The temptation is often to cut down the sides but this can lead to in-growing nails I advise letting the nails grow and to clear out the edge of the nail with an old tooth brush using moisturising cream along the sides. A build-up of dead skin, soap, sock fluff can put extra pressure on the nail, causing pain.

In-growing toe nails. Incorrect nail cutting, direct injury or picking at toe nails can lead to a spike of nail to grow into the flesh of the toe. Treatment ranges from cutting the nail correctly and removing the spike, to removal of the side or whole nail with surgery under local anaesthetic. Q: Is the surgery something you can do at the clinic? A: Yes, this is something we can do in-house, as there are two practitioners here. My colleague, Amy Leverton, joins me and we perform the procedure together. These are just a few of the conditions our Chiropodists can help you with. Do you own a house in France? Consider this … If you own a house in France, there is a recent change in European inheritance law that you should be aware of – particularly when it comes to making a Will. The law changed significantly last August, when an EU Succession Regulation came into force (Brussels IV). Before then, if you died whilst domiciled in England and Wales, but owned a house in France, the inheritance law of England and Wales applied to your worldwide assets - except your French house, to which French law applied. Under French law, ‘forced heirship’ rules meant that you could not always pass your French house to your surviving spouse (or other beneficiaries), because your children had an automatic entitlement to part of it. The aim of Brussels IV, however, is to put an end to different inheritance laws applying to assets in different countries, by ensuring that a person’s worldwide assets are governed by a single inheritance law. The Regulation says that if you don’t state otherwise in your Will, on your death your worldwide estate will be governed by the law of the country of your last habitual residence. If you are a UK resident, you might assume this means that your French house will pass under UK law. However, this is unlikely to be the case because the UK has opted out of Brussels IV and so it seems that French law will continue to apply. We are awaiting case law from the European Court of Justice to clarify the issue. But, in the meantime, you do now have another choice. The Regulation states that you can opt, by will, for the law of your nationality to apply instead. So, if you wish to bypass the French forced heirship rules, and the current uncertainty introduced by

the new Regulation - whether you are habitually resident in the UK, France or elsewhere - you can now include an express clause in your Will, opting for the law of your nationality to apply to the devolution of your worldwide estate. A word of caution: Seek specialist legal advice as to whether such a choice of law is appropriate for your circumstances. You should also bear in mind that Brussels IV does not affect inheritance tax, and so both French and UK inheritance tax consequences must still be considered.

2016 Year of the Hacker? (Part One) Many experts in the field of IT security are predicting that 2016 will be the worst year ever for scammers and hackers. Actually, as these activities increase year on year, you don’t really need a crystal ball to predict that. However, what is concerning is that the focus is changing and the types of attack are getting far more serious and far-reaching. Additionally, there has been a huge investment in developing skills for those intent on stealing information and undertaking computer fraud. Arguably, we also seem to be losing the battle to cyber terrorism, as the likes of organised crime and IS invest their time and finances into attacking our infrastructure. Since the start of the year, we have already witnessed successful attacks at the BBC, HSBC and Lincolnshire County Council, amongst others. The good news is that much of this activity is towards attacking servers, rather than people’s home computers. The bad news is that online servers are not only at the heart of our infrastructure, but also hold all sorts of information about us and are often where we back up and store our data, as we turn more to the ‘cloud’based solutions. Over the next two months, I will look at the steps

First and foremost is to ensure that you have multiple copies of all your data; from family photos, to household and business documents. Local Backups: Ensure that you have at least one additional set of backups for all your data. There are many programs that can be used. I personally use Iperius Backup (www.iperiusbackup.co.uk) but Windows (8 and 10) includes an excellent utility in the form of Windows File History. Offsite Backup: Make a second ‘offsite’ backup. One way to do this is to use one of the many cloud storage solutions. (e.g. Google Drive, Microsoft Onedrive, BT Cloud all of which at entry level offer free storage.) Disconnected Backup: An increasing tactic used by criminals is ransomware. This infection will ‘encrypt’ your data, making it unreadable unless you purchase a ‘decryption’ key from the hackers. Sadly, these are getting more virulent and are not only attacking files on the infected system, but some can also search out network backup drives. Combat this by carrying out a backup of your data to a device that is disconnected from your network after completion.

In the second part of this article, I will look at protection tools, and touch on some of the user ‘habits’ that we should adopt to safeguard our personal data.

The calls are targeted because in many cases, it is believed that unscrupulous firms are buying databases containing details of patients and their medical / mobility needs. know of a couple of cases where a bogus caller persuaded a patient awaiting a knee operation to buy an adjustable chair for more than eight times the retail price. In another instance, a patient with an already perfectly good, working, mobility scooter was tricked into buying another one – at more than four times the retail price. Whilst some appointments are arranged as a home visit, with the sole reason to sell something – others are made off-site, to lure the person away from the house with the intention of burgling the property whilst they are ‘out of the way’. The police in your area are aware of this latest scam, and information has also been circulated to all GP surgeries and the Clinical Commissioning Groups by the NHS. Remember: Never deal with cold callers – however persuasive they are. If you receive a call of this nature, always check with your GP surgery before agreeing to a visit.

– An Impressive Exotic Animal Facility on our Doorstep

s a nation of animal lovers, and with our apparent desire to always be on the lookout for something a little out of the ordinary, it is not surprising that our veterinary surgeons are facing an increasing number of creatures which can be labelled “exotic”, from small mammals, through reptiles such as lizards and snakes to birds. How reassuring then to know that, within our local corner of South Lincolnshire, there exists an extraordinarily wellequipped facility, where veterinary care can be administered to any exotic animal you may care to take along. Animates Veterinary Clinic has been established in Thurlby, near Bourne, since 2005, whilst the Market Deeping Clinic on Stamford Road is now into its fourth year of providing an excellent, professional service for your pets, within a most caring and friendly environment. It is at the Thurlby surgery, though, that I was recently able to see just what can be created, when dedication, enthusiasm and business acumen

are combined to produce an enviable facility, the only one of its kind within a forty mile radius, and one which attracts clients from further afield. Sarah Pellett joined owner Rebecca Kuttel’s team of veterinary surgeons in September 2012 to develop the exotic service at Animates. Within six months, there was enough exotics work for Sarah to move away from treating dogs and cats. To become a “Specialist” in any veterinary field, I was astonished to discover, takes years. To be allowed to call themselves a Specialist, vets must gain a “Certificate” and then a “Diploma” in their chosen field. To do this requires a huge commitment and takes, on average, eight years, due to the criteria they need to meet. This includes attending conferences and seminars, sitting multiple exams, being on committees,

writing articles in professional journals and lots of practical experience. Sarah is nearing the end of this process and is sitting her last exams in August 2016 and will hopefully be near to reaching her final target. She will then need to apply to be recognized by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons. At that point, Animates will be proud to be able to offer the public the services of a qualified “Specialist”. Meanwhile, another of Rebecca’s team, veterinary surgeon Craig Mackinlay, has embarked upon a similar journey, and is presently working towards his “Certificate” in exotics. The early days saw the “exotics” being treated in a small room within the main building, in Thurlby. However, with imagination and perseverance, a large building within the back garden, has been professionally transformed to become an impressive, multi-roomed facility. Twelve months after opening, the hospital-like services are now fully operational, with a waiting room, a consult room, a treatment room and five hospital wards which house a range of accommodation, including vivariums (where a variety of specific living conditions can be replicated as needed for certain creatures). There is a wonderful feeling of excellent professional care, being administered by the veterinary surgeons and several registered veterinary nurses.

| A little bit of History

Discovering . . . the MARKET PLACE

Markets have existed since ancient times, an open space in the centre of the town or village where goods were bought and sold, where people met to exchange gossip, where public proclamations were made and speakers addressed the crowds on a variety of topics. The right to hold a market was enshrined in law by royal decree and in Market Deeping such a market began in 1220 under a charter granted by Henry III to William Brewer although this was superseded by a second charter in 1300 granted by Edward I, firstly to John Wake and after he died to his widow, Joan Wake, “that she shall have for the term of her life a weekly market on Wednesday”, an agreement which was renewed in 1308 by Edward II in perpetuity to Joan, her son, Thomas, and their heirs. So it remained throughout the ages, a weekly market held on the main street and with them three annual fairs, two for cattle on the second Wednesday after May Day and on October 10th, and one “chiefly for wood” on the last Wednesday in July. The manor of Deeping passed to the crown in 1360 and retained royal status until the 19th century when it was sold. the Co-operative Food supermarket because of the danger to shoppers from increasing traffic flows. Two main roads, the A16 and A15, intersect here but much of the through traffic disappeared with the opening of a new bypass in 1998 and then in the spring of 2001, the market was moved off the streets under an urban enhancement scheme costing £500,000, funded by the local authorities and English Heritage, and although most of the historic buildings remain to provide an attractive period façade, many believed that the move had cost the town some of its period charm. The large roundabout at the crossroads on the west side was also reduced in size, the section of dual carriageway and central reservation disappeared during realignment, short stay car parking bays were installed on the north side and new cast iron lamp standards erected along the kerbside which are decorated every summer with colourful displays from floral hanging baskets to make Market Deeping as welcoming as ever. | Police Patrol by Bourne’s Sergeant 503 Rick Mosley

Sergeant Mosley’s Musings I have now started a new (temporary) chapter in my life, as a sergeant on the Neighbourhood Policing Team, to cover maternity leave for a colleague for a few months. I am really looking forward to the challenges that this new role will present, and also to add my own slant on how Lincolnshire Police engages with the community. Every neighbourhood in Lincolnshire has a dedicated Neighbourhood Policing Team. These teams are led by an inspector who may be responsible for several teams. Individual teams are led by a sergeant, with a police constable who is known as a community beat manager. The teams are also made up of police community support officers (PCSO), who play a vital role in being the main conduit between the public and the police. They face the public on a daily basis, tackling and preventing local, low-level crime, anti-social behaviour and any on-going concerns through working closely with partner agencies and community groups. The benefit of Neighbourhood Policing is that the teams can focus all of their efforts on their dedicated neighbourhoods, building relationships with local people.

Once local priorities have been identified, from whatever source, a broader ‘toolkit’ of problem-solving tactics is available to ensure crime and anti-social behaviour is tackled effectively. This response may not involve the police, but belong to one agency or a group of agencies.

| Spotlight on Schools

William Hildyard C. of E. Primary & Nursery School Our links with St. Guthlac’s Church In 1547, the Feoffes, a charity within the parish of Market Deeping, founded a church school. They set out to help children and young people with their education requirements. To this day, the school is linked with St. Guthlac’s Parish Church and continues to provide an excellent education for all who attend. Every other year, we lead a Church School Festival for pupils in Years 3 and 4 across the Deepings primary schools. Our Nursery We have a twenty-six place nursery, with thirteen children attending for either a morning or an afternoon session. During their sessions, the children have a wealth of educational experiences both inside and outside of the classroom. A Parent and Teacher Together (PATT) group meet on alternate Fridays to support the development of the children. Forest School Mrs Liz Blackler, our Forest School Leader, enthuses the children across the school with regular visits to ‘The Forest of Dreams’, appropriately named by one of our pupils. The site allows for nature study, whittling, climbing trees and activities within the mud kitchen. Activities are linked to curriculum studies within the classroom. Pupil Voice There are three Pupil Councils within the school. The School Council promotes fundraising for charities and has redesigned areas of the school, such as an impressive library area, and supported the PTFA in their ideas for outside gym equipment. The Eco Council has received their Silver Eco Schools

Award. Over time, they have built a greenhouse made from lemonade bottles, and studied energy efficiency and the importance of turning lights off! The Collective Worship Council now lead our assemblies on a regular basis and have introduced our six “Christian Values” which go across the year: values of friendship, generosity, thankfulness, forgiveness, courage and respect. Community Links We embrace our links with the local community. Our children were involved in the design of the activities on John Eve Field; our Dramatic Arts Club performed brilliantly at the Peterborough Dance Festival; and we sang and read poems to the residents at The Laurels and Holland House, just before Christmas. We are so proud of all our children, for their enthusiasm for learning and the way in which they welcome newcomers to the school. We are grateful to our parents, who show outstanding support, and to our staff and governors for their commitment to ensuring that the school is the best that it can be.

1) Where were you born, and what is your favourite memory of your childhood?

Fiona Griffiths, Executive Headteacher at William Hildyard School

I was born on the Isle of Man, during my father’s first ministry within the Methodist Church, prior to moving to Manchester, then Lincoln and finally to Cheshire. I began school at the age of two, earlier than most, as I accompanied my mother in her reception classroom. I think I was always destined for a role in the field of education. 2) Which two characters, alive or not, would you most enjoy sharing a meal with and why? I would like to dine with Mahatma Gandhi and Mother Teresa, both iconic figures, who had a deep belief in the sanctity of life and fought for those who had little or no voice. 3) How would you describe yourself in only five words? I hope that others would say that I am caring, honest, dedicated and try to see the positive in everyone and everything.

This month sees the “hot seat” being occupied by a lady, for whom education has been central to her life from the age of two! Fiona Griffiths is the Executive Headteacher of William Hildyard Church of England Primary and Nursery School in Market Deeping and is not only the daughter of a teacher of infant children but also the sister of a teacher for children with learning difficulties. She is interested in world travel and, through her Headship with the Lincoln Diocese, Fiona has worked with Church Schools in South India, and is hoping to visit Cuba this year to see the country before it changes from the old to the new.

4) If there was one thing which you could change about “The Deepings”, what would it be and why? To have a theatre in the Deepings would be wonderful, to show the talents and qualities which many of our young people hold. The confidence and excitement that performing to others would give would greatly enhance their social well-being. 5) What advice would you give to a “sixteen-year-old you”? If I could give advice to my sixteen year old self, it would be to ‘be true to yourself, always be positive, smile when you can and reach for the sky’.

Grey Squirrels, a dilemma?

Last week, a grey squirrel was brought into our Bourne surgery. He had been found, looking dazed and shocked . When he was examined he had problems holding up his head ,a wound close to his left elbow and was breathing heavily. We were suspicious from his wound that he may have been shot with an air rifle. An x-ray confirmed this, as well as damage to his anterior lung fields .We could also see an additional four pellets in his body, showing he had been shot several times before. We treated him for shock and gave him antibiotics and pain killers . We placed these pictures on our Facebook pages which were shared with over 35000 people! Most peopleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s reactions were ones of disgust that a creature should be shot and suffer in this way. However, some people view these animals as vermin, and believe that we should not treat them . Part of the problem is that, legally, they are classified as vermin and people are not allowed to keep them or release them into the wild without a licence . In areas where there are still red squirrels, there is some justification for controlling numbers in a humane manner. In areas where grey squirrels are already endemic and there are no reds, there is little justification for killing them . Indeed, in most parts, they are a recognisable part of our countryside. I trained to become a vet to treat animals, not to kill them. All animals have a right to be treated unless their injuries are untreatable or if the animal is a danger to humans. The squirrel has improved, but still has problems with his breathing . We have transferred him to Weirfield Wildlife Hospital in Lincoln (along with a good donation). They are licenced to keep and release a small number of grey squirrels each year, and we hope that our squirrel will recover and be released.

– Plan Ahead and Avoid Disasters

Welcome to the motoring section. At the time of writing, the temperature has dropped, and a strong bitterly wind is affecting us in Bourne, Deeping and the surrounding areas. Perhaps this is as good a time as any to consider good quality breakdown cover for your vehicle, especially if you have long journeys planned in your diary. Recently, members of my extended family discovered that the extent of their cover needed upgrading when a suspension failure caused a dramatic blow-out of a tyre on a motorway. The recovery service replaced the tyre, only for the new tyre to instantly puncture again, as soon as the car moved, as the damaged suspension ripped into the side of the tyre. A £100+ upgrade enabled the car to be lifted and taken to a destination of their choice. That experience, just to get off the hard shoulder of the motorway, took over four hours; the hard shoulder of a motorway is not where you want to be for any longer than is absolutely necessary, as

vehicles on hard shoulders do run the risk of getting completely wiped out. Another recent experience involved the journey back with my two boys from having watched the Posh match at West Bromwich Albion. Luckily, we had decided to take a convenience break at services on the motorway at 6pm, where a brake fault on one of the car’s wheels was discovered. This also resulted in a tow back home, and we eventually returned after 2am, the next morning! Both of those experiences involved reputable breakdown providers, AA and Green Flag. It just goes to show how important it is to consider getting cover, if you haven’t already, and think about the extent of the cover you want. As important as this, however, travel prepared – get emergency equipment in the boot, should problems occur on the journey. With the low temperatures and sometimes awful weather we have this time of year, you might be extremely relieved that you prepared properly. Wishing you safe driving.

“Only Fools and Hearses” – Dying to Get a Laugh! Catching my eye this month was the report of the unusual funeral of a former dinner lady, Ethel Westover, at the Lancaster and Morecambe Crematorium in mid-January. Thanks to the imagination of a local funeral director, Darren Abey, Ethel’s family were able to grant her dying wish of making her final journey, not in the typical black limousine, but in a yellow Reliant Regal. It was a replica of the famous car driven by Del Boy Trotter in the BBC sitcom, “Only Fools and Horses”, with a yellow trailer which contains the coffin, and was supplied by Darren’s Fleetwood firm, “Only Fools and Hearses”! The last two years have seen Darren taking this “lovely jubbly” type of send-off all around the U.K, as bereaved families seek something much lighter than usual. “The reaction from people is priceless,” he says. “It makes everyone laugh and smile. It’s always the worse thing waiting for the hearse to arrive, but when we turn up, it turns it into a celebration of life. That’s what it is all about. Life’s too short.”

Maybe, there’s an opportunity for an ambitious entrepreneur around these parts to try something similar, to out-do even Del Boy. How about “I’m a Cadaver- Get me out of Here”, or just plain “Take Me Out”? Dying to get to the match! A survey of 2,000 adults, and research among the Co-op’s 2,500 funeral directors in late 2015, showed a rise in a “destination funeral”, with services requested to be held in settings other than churches or crematoriums. These were many and varied, including by a lake or river; in the countryside; in their home, garden or street; and on the beach. Four percent even favoured a football ground! Co-operative Funeralcare found that coffins have been transported by bus, motorcycle, Cadillac, tandem bicycle, as well as the more traditional horsedrawn carriage. Sam Kershaw, operations director, said: “What we’re seeing is a culture shift in the way that we deal with loss. It’s becoming ever more common to hear people refer to funerals as a celebration of life. As arranging a funeral is the last thing we’ll do for a person, it’s incredibly important to feel able to create a truly unique and personal tribute to their life.”
