Easter has come and almost gone, and this month we’ve included a treasure hunt activity which will hopefully keep your enthusiastic little, and notso-little, ones busy in those days before school re-starts in early April. Ladies the “weight” is over! In most gyms, there is a fairly clear divide between the areas where men work out and where women work out. Women are generally nervous about heading into the free weights area but, here at Empire Gym, we positively encourage it and our gym etiquette, to which all members must adhere, ensures them a warm welcome. Lifting weights burns a huge number of calories, it improves strength and is the most effective way to change body composition. In fact, women who follow the same type of weight training programme as their male counterparts are some of the leanest women you’ll find at the gym. Building muscle is a role of testosterone, which exists in large quantities in men, and lesser quantities in women. Without this hormone, building muscle mass becomes very difficult. This means that women and men can train in exactly the same way and women will not develop in the same way or at the same rate as men. To be clear, women are physiologically incapable of this, even if they train with a body-building programme. Women typically don’t gain size from strength training but can, of course, develop muscle strength and endurance. So, women’s and men’s programmes can be completely identical. The only exception is that women may have to choose a lighter weight.

Studies have found that the average woman who strength trains will gain muscle, lose fat, lose weight and change body shape and, as lean muscle increases, so does your resting metabolism, and you will burn more calories all day long. Generally speaking, for each pound of muscle you gain, you burn thirty-five to fifty more calories each day. That can really add up. Why “grin and bear it”? Try acupuncture - advises registered acupuncturist, Tina King

We’re famously a nation that doesn’t like fuss, but new statistics from the British Acupuncture Council reveal that, when it comes to pain, nearly half of Britons just ‘grin and bear’ it. According to the report, released to mark Acupuncture Awareness Week in March, almost three in ten exercise more now than they did ten years ago, but more than half say they’ve been injured during sport in the past, and a third claim to have never recovered from their injuries.

Despite acupuncture’s widely recognized health benefits, statistics also show that one in five people say they are too scared to try it because of the needles. It is worth pointing out, that acupuncture needles are as fine as a human hair and are, more often than not, painless on insertion.

To overcome a sporting injury, almost three in five people take oral painkillers, and nearly a third turn to ice and heat packs, compared to just 11% who opt for traditional acupuncture. Many people put up with pain when they don’t need to. Often, discomfort from musculoskeletal problems can be alleviated with the correct identification and treatment -one of those options could be acupuncture. Traditional acupuncture is an evidence-based therapy, shown to help reduce pain and swelling, increase blood flow to promote recovery and help restore movement. Acupuncture is one of the oldest documented systems of

medicine, based on principles which go back nearly two thousand years. It involves placing fine, sterile needles at specific points on the body to trigger a healing response; it is believed that pain or illness can occur when integral systems are damaged or interrupted. Acupuncture aims to identify the root cause of a problem, as well as addressing the symptoms. Most people who attend for the first time are a little nervous, so Tina will take

Men United In Song

What is the Carers Sitter Service?

Men United In Song is a recruitment initiative which aims to attract new members to the Peterborough Male Voice Choir, while at the same time raising money for Prostate Cancer UK, a very worthy – and specifically male – cause. Launching in April, the project will recruit forty local men, who, over twelve weeks, will rehearse to perform with the Choir in a gala charity concert at the Broadway Theatre, in June.

It is a voluntary organisation, aiming to help the housebound, by providing a service to assist carers and their families in South Lincolnshire, across Bourne, Stamford, The Deepings, and their surrounding villages, and the PE9 villages of Rutland and East Northamptonshire. It is a registered charity which works closely with other caring organisations. The Service provides a homesitting service for the numerous people who are practically housebound, because of the 24-hour care they are providing for dependent relatives and friends. These include both frail, elderly people and people incapacitated through chronic illness. The service provides approximately 2,000 hours of sitting in the year. • The service is free to carers. We rely on donations from many different sources. • This is a sitter service, so there are no nursing or lifting duties, nor is medication given. We urgently need new volunteers to meet the demands of our service. • We provide a service for a few hours during the day or evening,

Words from the Mayor Councillor Wayne Lester

Deeping St. James has a new chain of office, in the form of Councillor Steve Gilbert, and I was delighted to be able to join him on his first function, “Clean for the Queen” on March 6th. Along with over thirty volunteers from around the Deepings, and staff from McDonalds, we succeeded in clearing many bags of rubbish from several parts of Deeping St. James. Commonwealth Day was on Monday March 14th, and it was my honour to be able to raise

the Commonwealth flag at the Town Hall on that morning at 10.00am, to join other family nations and organisations, at home in the UK, and around the world in a shared celebration – a proud moment indeed. Deeping St. James Parish Council kicked off their monthly ‘Meet your local Councillor’ surgery at the Deepings Library; next month, Market Deeping Town Council will join them in a joint surgery which will then be held each month at the library. The joint Neighbourhood Plan, for the parishes of Market Deeping and Deeping St James, is starting to gain momentum. Registration with SKDC has been sought, they have published the Notice, and we expect the approval within six weeks. The Steering Group has been formed, and will officially be known as “Deepings First”. It has Council representation with Geoff Donley, Judy Stevens and Mike Ward from DSJPC and David Shelton and Adam Brookes from MDTC, and is chaired by David Shelton. The Mayor’s Civic Dinner Dance was wellattended with 60 guests, the Gang Show team put on a performance which stole the night, and I would like to thank all of those who attended and supported the event. A total of £357 was raised – very well done! New speed signs are now installed and we are collecting the data to see where speeding is an issue within Market Deeping. And finally… “The Market Deeping Town Council has supported Councillor Wayne Lester to hold a further year of office. Wayne will continue as the Chairman through to May 2017”. – yet another proud moment!

Selecting the Right Care Home - a guide from Julie Britten, Home Manager at Rose Lodge Care Home, Market Deeping

any people arrange their own care independently, whilst some local authorities can help with this. It’s always a good idea to take your own homework though. Decide what category of care will be needed - nursing care, residential care, dementia care, nursing dementia, or a home that caters for specific conditions or disabilities. The age group of the residents in the home may also be an important factor, as not all care homes are for the elderly. C.Q.C. (Care Quality Commission) and local authority reports are a good starting point. On the C.Q.C. website, you can enter your post code and search all categories of appropriate care homes within a nominated mileage range. Inspection reports are available for care homes of all categories, and it is a good idea to ask the manager of the home further questions about their report if you have any concerns or need clarification. Things to do and to look out for: Visit the home unannounced. The staff at the care home should be happy to offer you a viewing at any time. Have a list of questions ready. • Do the staff seem friendly and engaging? • Do the residents you see look happy? • Why not ask a resident about their experience living at the home? • Is the environment suitable for the person you are helping find a care home? • Are the facilities suitable for a person having difficulties with cognition or mobility for example? It is always a good idea take the prospective resident to visit the home before a final decision is

made. This will allow you to gauge their reaction and see how others interact with them; you may be able to visualise how they might settle in. Even if the local authority is arranging the care home, and there is more than one suitable home to choose from, the person has the right to choose which one they prefer. If a person has dementia and cannot make decisions for themselves (that is, they have been assessed to lack capacity to do it themselves), there will need to be an appointed guardian, someone who has lasting power of attorney for their personal welfare. If the person has no legal guardian or carer involved, then the person has the right to an independent â&#x20AC;&#x153;mental capacity advocateâ&#x20AC;?, to make sure the choice of care home is in their best interests. Most of all, when choosing a care home, you can ask to stay for a trial period to make sure that you have made the right choice. By this stage most people do feel that they have made the right choice, but making an alternative lifestyle choice is one of the biggest decisions a person will ever make. This will take time to come to terms with, both emotionally and financially. The right care

home will make this transition as easy as possible for you, your family and friends. Going into care does not have to be seen as a final step of oneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s life, but the start of a new exciting chapter in many cases. Stamp Duty Land Tax – All Change on All Fools Day On April 1st, 2016, a higher rate of Stamp Duty Land Tax (SDLT) is being introduced, affecting those who are buying residential property as a second home or as an investment. The Government’s intention is to slow the buy-tolet and rental market, to try and ensure a supply of property for people looking to buy their own home. The new higher rates will apply to residential property being bought for over £40,000, and will be 3% higher than the existing SDLT rates. How many properties you will own on the day of completion of your purchase, and, if more than one, whether the purchase of the property is a replacement of your main residence (which is being sold), will determine whether or not you will be liable for the higher rate. If you exchanged contracts for the purchase of a second property before the announcement of higher rates was made on November 25th, 2015, but will not complete until after April 1st, 2016, you will qualify for SDLT on the lower rate. If you will only own one property, you will pay SDLT on the lower rate. If you will own more than one property, you will be

liable for SDLT on the higher rate, unless you have simultaneously replaced (by selling) your main residence While we await the full policy details which are due to be announced in this month’s Budget, it is expected that, if you buy a property as your new main residence, having sold your previous main residence in the previous eighteen months, you may be able to claim the lower rate of SDLT, even if you own other property. If you buy a new property as your main residence, but do not sell your existing property, you will have to pay SDLT on the higher rate, but may be able to apply for a refund if you sell your previous residence within eighteen months of completing your purchase. Don’t be an “April Fool” when it comes to doorstep gardeners or landscapers So, the milder spring weather is finally here, the nights are pulling out, and your outdoor space could do with a little TLC. Remember: • Don’t be talked into something on the spur of the moment. • Don’t take their word for it when they tell you urgent work or repairs need doing. • Do ask them to qualify who they are and to leave you a contact number. • Never hand over any cash as a deposit for work which they say they will return to carry out. • Feel free to ask to see their credentials and / or examples of their work. • Always ask them politely to leave if you feel uncomfortable with their approach. If you are in the market for a new driveway or patio, or are dreaming of a new lawn or garden for the summer, new fascias, whatever it may be – then always use a reputable tradesperson. The door-knocking scams of cowboy landscapers and other outdoor trades are becoming more and more common. Needless to say, it is absolutely mandatory that you never pay anyone cash at the door, especially when they haven’t even conducted any work on your premises. Most driveway scammers of this type won’t even have conducted a full inspection of your property and therefore probably have no genuine idea as to the exact costs involved or the length of time it’ll take. Discovering . . . the Indian Queen

There were many public houses around England in past centuries called the Indian Queen and several theories as to the origins of the name, one of the most popular being that the royal lady was the legendary Princess Pocahontas, daughter of a paramount chief of tribal native Americans who played a major role in the colonial settlement of Virginia, during the 17th century when she married tobacco planter John Rolfe and then travelled to London and was presented to English society. One such hostelry stood overlooking the River Welland in Bridge Street, Deeping St James, an attractive thatched property believed to be around 500 years old with a swinging sign outside and one which became popular with the crews of barges which plied their trade along the waterway between Stamford and the sea.

and so in the spring of 1880, she was mortified to find herself in court accused of permitting drunkenness in the bar of the Indian Queen. Despite her protestations of innocence, the magistrates found her guilty, convicted on the unsupported testimony of one witness, and she was fined ÂŁ3 with costs and her licence endorsed. A few hours later, Mrs Bellamy, then aged 42, was found dead in her bedroom, her body hanging by the neck from a silk handkerchief tied to the handle of a cupboard door. The inquest was told that she had been deeply troubled by the case and had declared herself totally innocent, becoming unwell and distressed after the court hearing, and so the jury returned a verdict of â&#x20AC;&#x153;temporary insanityâ&#x20AC;?. The case was subsequently raised in the House of Commons on the grounds that the sentence was unnecessarily severe because Mrs Bellamy had no previous convictions but it was decided that the magistrates had acted correctly and could not be blamed for the suicide.

This busy inn had many licensees but the most popular by far was a woman, Mrs Frances Bellamy, who served as mine host during the late 19th century when drunkenness was prevalent and riotous behaviour commonplace.

The building was badly damaged by fire in October 1897 but re-opened after repairs and the last landlord was James Rippon who retired in 1910 when it became a private house but in recent years has been replaced by a modern bungalow.

But despite her often unruly customers, Mrs Bellamy was a strict observer of the law and strove to keep an orderly house

It really must feel like we keep talking about pensions and to be fair we do! The rules around pensions have changed significantly over the last few years and will have a major impact both on how you save for retirement and access your money once you retire. You may have heard about Pension freedom? The new pension rules have given people far more choice over what they can do with their pension pots. What used to happen? For most people when you retired you could take up to 25% of your pension as tax-free cash and the rest had to be turned into a retirement income by buying an annuity. The new rules: There are several ways you can now use your pension pot. You can: • Buy a guaranteed income for life – an annuity. • Invest your pension in funds designed to provide you with a flexible retirement income – called ‘drawdown’ (the income is not guaranteed for life). • Take small cash sums from your pension when you want them. • Take all your pension as cash in one go. • Mix the above options. You will need to consider your tax position: If you take cash out of your pension then 25% of the withdrawal is likely to be tax-free (the other 75% is the taxable element).

Our Survey Says ….. Having children is now the most likely cause for people to put their affairs in order, and get their wills written, in the opinion of the research conducted by YouGov. According to the research, having children is the only reason given in the majority of cases, as to why they made a will. The second most cited was a change in health, with marriages and divorces also cited as major reasons for making a will.

2016 Year of the Hacker? (Part Two) Many experts in the field of IT security are predicting that 2016 will be the worst year ever for scammers and hackers. Since the start of the year we have already witnessed attacks on services at the BBC, HSBC Bank and Lincolnshire County Council and I am sure there are others that have been less publicly acknowledged. Last month, in part one of this article, I focused on the different types of backup that you should run to help protect you from loss of data. In part two I am changing this focus to more general advice to help you avoid becoming a successful target for these scammers and villains. Security Suite: In my opinion these are a must have. The current three top performers are Bitdefender, Kaspersky and Norton. Avast is currently the best of the ‘free antivirus’ tools but I would recommend upgrading from a free solution to a fully paid security suite. Email Care: Be careful when using your email as it is a common place for hackers to ‘hook’ you in to a website or attachment that contains malware. Most security suites have email scanners built in but these only offer limited protection. Bottom line, if you are not 100% that an email with a web-link or attachment is valid do not open it. Generally financial organisations do not send email that contains attachments. Telephone Scam Awareness: A very common tactic is for a hacker to call you and claim they are from a well-known company. They will then persuade you that there is an issue with your system and that they need to log on to correct it. At this point they may load malware onto your system. This is actually an easy one to ‘police’. NONE OF THESE CALLS ARE VALID – IGNORE THEM. Password Selection: I know many of you will hate this one but do not use the same password for different services. Also make your password complex (ie. Uppercase, lowercase, a symbol and a number). The common advice from security experts is not to write these down but if that is what you have to do to remember them then do it. The best way of recording them is to have a code that only you know, so what appears on the page is slightly different to the actual password. There are also online cloud based solutions that will store your passwords in an encrypted format so you can access them from any device as needed (e.g. www.passwordbox.com) If all this makes you concerned about the security of your system then good, you should be. However, if you follow these steps you will greatly reduce your risk of being attacked.

| Food Roast leg of lamb with thyme and lemon Enjoy the very best of British lamb with this delicous recipe, perfect for a family get together on a Sunday

Method 1. Preheat the oven to gas 7, 220°C, fan 200°C. Put 3 garlic cloves, some fresh thyme leaves, the zest of 1 lemon and 2tbsp olive oil in a pestle and mortar, season, and bash into a paste. 2. Take a 2.5kg (5Ib) leg of lamb (to serve 6) and, using a sharp knife, make little slits over the meat. Rub the herb mix all over. Slice 2 onions finely and scatter into a large roasting tin. Add a few thyme sprigs, drizzle with 1 tbsp of olive oil, season and put the lamb leg on top. 3. Roast for 20 minutes. Reduce the oven to gas 6, 200°C, fan 180°C, pour 250ml (8fl oz) white wine and a splash of water over the lamb. Roast for 15 minutes per 500g

(1.1lb) for pink lamb; for well-done lamb roast for 20 minutes per 500g. Baste the lamb with its juices a few times during cooking and add a little water to the tin about 15 minutes before the lamb is cooked. 4. Remove the meat, place on a serving plate, lightly cover with foil and leave for 20 minutes. To make gravy, remove the excess fat from the tin. Over a high heat whisk the meat juices with 2tsp flour. Add 500ml (17fl oz) hot stock and let it bubble for 3-4 minutes. Stir in 1⁄2 tsp Dijon mustard and 1 tsp redcurrant jelly. Season and serve with the lamb.

DEEPING ST NICHOLAS PRIMARY SCHOOL Deeping St Nicholas Primary School is some six miles away from the close family of Deeping schools. We are pleased to be able to contribute to Discovering Deeping as some families may not be familiar with our school until they are offered a school place here. This is a brief snapshot of what we have to offer. “Together, we can make a difference” is our school motto. We believe that working together in partnership with families and our local community makes a real difference to the learning that takes place. Visitors comment that there is a happy, family atmosphere in school which makes them feel that their children are in safe hands. Every child is different and we work hard to make sure that they all have opportunities to experience success. We have high aspirations for everyone and recognise the importance of being the best that you can be – whichever path you choose in life. We are much smaller than other local schools and have just three classes. Our biggest class has 25 children and our smallest 16. Children are taught in mixed aged classes because our year groups differ in size. We review the teaching and learning arrangements annually to make sure that we have the best arrangement to meet the needs of our children. Currently we have EYFS and KS1 taught together in our smallest class; years 3 and 4 taught as one class, leaving years 5 and 6 for the third class. In total, 60 children attend the school. Good Literacy and Numeracy skills are essential if we are to succeed in modern life but we believe that we should also develop wider 44

interests to give our lives balance. Therefore, our curriculum is broad and is supported by visits and school based workshop activities. Last term we all studied the history of music in age appropriate ways and this term we are having our own Roman Invasion. Sports funding enables us to invite top quality coaches into school to develop gymnastics and games skills. There are after school clubs from Monday to Thursday inclusive, covering sports and creative activities. We work in partnership with other small schools and this gives us the opportunity to share costs. We have enjoyed gymnastics tournaments, athletics challenges, multi – cultural workshops and art exhibitions together. We also join in the excellent organised activities at The Deepings School so that our older children make wider circles of friends for the future. One of our school aims is, “to measure success in smiles and self – confidence in addition to academic achievements.” Happy children are much more enthusiastic and ready to learn. Challenges for Modern Day Drivers What is it about driving around Deeping and beyond that can cause so much stress these days? Some of the factors that contribute to the situation are within our control as drivers, and some are not. It does help to recognise which issues each of us have the ability to affect and which ones we have little control over, because, attempting to resolve issues that are not within our capability is a sure cause for stress. It seems that separation gaps between vehicles are either being disregarded by many or perhaps just forgotten. There actually should be a four second gap, leading up to the vehicle in front, in wet conditions – any closer than that on our roads of 50 mph+, and the ability to stop in time to prevent a collision is seriously reduced. Whilst we have little control over the weather

conditions when we drive, problems can occur when we don’t acknowledge the adverse weather conditions as we can sometimes drive at the same speed, using the same separation gaps, not allowing any time to break for refreshment, relax, recharge in what are often driving conditions that require high levels of concentration. The ways in which roads have been designed can raise stress levels, with many that were simply not designed for the volume of modern day driving, for example narrow roads, parked cars both sides, poor street lighting, insufficient white paint and obstacles that restrict vision.

| Police Patrol by Bourne’s Sergeant 503 Rick Mosley Sergeant Mosley’s Musings – “Boy Racers” Beware! I recently posted a picture on the team Facebook page of a car that had been seized, under Section 59 of the Police Reform Act 2002, and this caused a bit of a debate. As a result, I decided to discuss this piece of legislation here and consider just what powers the police have. The Act was brought in to deal with vehicles being used on a road in a manner which causes alarm, distress or annoyance, or where it amounts to careless or inconsiderate driving. An example might be performing screeching ‘handbrake turns’ in a housing estate or revving the engine while parked on the roadside. It is important to explain the definition of a “road”, as it is more than you might think. A road is any highway and any other road to which the public has access and includes public highways, footpaths and bridle ways. It also includes road verges. The Act states that, if a vehicle is driven in such a manner, then a constable or a PCSO can seize the

vehicle and the driver can be reported for the offence. The driver will then be given a notice explaining how they can reclaim the vehicle. Should the vehicle not be claimed, then it is disposed of. There are recovery and storage costs to pay, before the vehicle is released. On the first occasion of such driving, the driver of the vehicle will be given a warning which remains with both the driver AND the vehicle for twelve months. That means if the driver drives another vehicle in the same manner, or another driver drives the same vehicle in a similar manner, then the offence is committed, and the vehicle can be seized. The warning is still in force for the full twelve months after being seized, and further breaches can again result in seizure.

It’s not just Flowers that rise in the Spring!

Last year, we saw a lot of ticks and the relatively mild winter this year will have done little to reduce the numbers for this spring. Ticks will start to rise out of the ground in the next two months, when we get the warmer spring weather. Now is a good time to think about tick treatment. Ticks are part of the spider family. They feed off the blood of animals, after which they drop to the ground and lay their eggs. The three main sources of ticks in this country are sheep, deer and hedgehogs. However, they will sometimes attach to dogs, cats, humans and other animals. When one of my sons was a baby, I was horrified to find a tick attached to his head after playing in grass in Scotland. Before a tick feeds, it looks like a small spider. It sits on the top of grass stalks with its front legs held up waiting for an animal to come by. Once it gets onto the animal, it crawls up the body and starts to feed . The animal does not usually feel this, as the tick injects a local anaesthetic along with anticoagulants to make the blood flow. The body of the tick now grows hugely and turns a grey colour. This is the stage that the tick becomes visible . After feeding for a day or so, the tick detaches and drops to the ground. When removing a tick, it is important not to squeeze it, as this can increase the risk of infections being passed from

the tick. The mouthparts of the tick need to be grasped close to the skin with something like tweezers and the tick removed by twisting, not pulling. There is a very useful tool called the “O’Tom Tick Twister” which makes tick removal much easier. Your veterinary surgeon will be able to provide these. The most worrying disease that can be transmitted by ticks is Lyme disease, which is caused by bacteria, and is on the increase in recent years. The most common symptoms in dogs and cats are lethargy, joint pain and fever, which can occur months after the tick bite . Other symptoms include neurological symptoms, heart disease and meningitis. Once diagnosed, the disease is easily treated in its earlier stages with a certain type of antibiotic. This same disease can also affect humans with the same symptoms. Infected people will often develop a skin rash a few days or weeks after the bite, that often looks like a target with a central circle at the bite site and an outer ring. There are several treatments on the market that kill and repel ticks. Take care as many of the modern flea preparations do not kill ticks. Talk to your veterinary surgery for more information.

The Service provides a home-sitting service for the numerous people who are practically housebound, because of the 24-hour care they are providing for dependent relatives and friends. These include both frail, elderly people and people incapacitated through chronic illness. The service provides approximately 2,000 hours of sitting in the year. • The service is free to carers.
