Welcome to the September edition of... Here at Discovering Magazines, we really do try to provide our readers with a thoughtful balance of articles, catering to readers of all different ages, and tastes: something for everyone! This month’s edition is no different, with a cavalcade of features for you to enjoy, as the summer draws to a close. This month, there’s a little something extra for anyone who has a taste for local nostalgia, with a special feature on our beloved Delaine Buses. Find out all about the history behind the double deckers, and the faces of the business, which has been a local transport staple for many years (pages 27-30) It was fabulous to talk to the mayor on Raft Race day: find out what he has coming up in September over on page 4, and, once again, we have lots of community news to share with you. It’s wonderful to see our local charities and clubs in action, and if any of you are part of a club that we could possibly feature in the future, we’d love to hear from you!

Claire x

Well, the Raft Race definitely did not disappoint. What a fantastic day! Read all about it, in my write up on page 31, and warm thanks to Discovering Deeping reader, Roy Harrison, who gave permission for us to use some of his photos of the rafting action. It was great to learn more about the history behind these annual aquatic events in this month’s history feature, which is waiting for you on page 47; a tradition which will continue soon, with The Deeping Lions’ “World Famous Duck Race” at The Weir, Bridge Street, Deeping St James (see our events list, page 44) on 4th September. Don’t miss out! To me, as a teacher, September will always be about returning to a new school year. I’m one of those strange people who get excited about fresh, new stationary! Congratulations to all those who received their exam results recently. We are certainly lucky locally to have a wide range of classes that also cater for those not yet at school-age, and I was excited to hear about a new series of sessions for keen little learners, being offered by two local ladies (see page 6). It really was great to meet so many of you on Raft Race day, and gain some wonderful feedback for our magazine. I would love to hear from anyone who has any ideas for anything we can feature in future editions. Please don’t hesitate to email me, or get in contact via our facebook page.

Words from the Mayor Councillor Wayne Lester August has been a very busy month. I had the great pleasure of welcoming a group of young adults, (N.C.S.) to Market Deeping, who undertook some fund-raising, with cake stalls at the Town Hall and a “pop-up afternoon tea” at the Community Centre. The N.C.S. team also lent a hand in our grounds, grass collecting at the Paddock, then over to Riverside and Welland Gardens to clean and spruce up the street furniture, in readiness for the Raft Race. Over the two week period they raised an amazing £491.71. Well done to them and thank you, the Deeping public, for your generosity.

I had the chance to experience the fast pace of “20 / 20 Cricket” at the Deeping Cricket Club at the area finals, before slipping away to see all the movie-themed raft racing down our river. What a sight, and what an amazing day, with so many visitors to our town. Well done the Raft Race Committee - you did us proud! Between watching the rafts and the balloon release, walking the main street and giving out the medals, I managed to find time for a pint on the London Bus – the best I.P.A. in town!

A visit to our Lincolnshire Army cadets on camp was jam-packed and fantastic fun. My Mayor’s Cadet Consort escorted me around the camp, along with other VIPs, and I even had a go at some clay pigeon shooting. It was wonderful to see so many cadets from the Deepings and surrounding villages learning new skills and making new friendships.

Council News Regarding the new development at Towngate, please have your say on the SKDC Planning Portal. We do need to have sustained development in Deeping and the surrounding areas. Access and egress from the site, along with the number of dwellings, were amongst the issues previously raised by the Council. Can I also urge you to fill in your Neighbourhood Plan Questionnaire, which will help us shape the future of local development in our community? In early August, we had a small number of travellers on our playing fields, causing a nuisance on the field and within the town, with a number of our local businesses suffering from criminal behaviour. Thankfully, with the help of Cllr. Bob Broughton, our grounds team and our clerk, we were able to persuade them to move on. The team also undertook a swift clean-up after they had left. The Council will be looking at measures to prevent this from happening in the future. If you see any activity like this, please contact the clerk or one of your local councillors. I would also ask you to call the police, using the 101 service. Remember, you can meet your local councillors every month at the library. The next surgery is on Saturday September 3rd, 10.30am to 1.00pm. Cllr Nick Neilson will be there from MDTC and Cllr Mike Ward from DSJPC.

“BeBright” – Classes to Give Your Child a Head-Start

Two local ladies have recently established a business which is aimed at helping to create happy, confident pre-school children, ready to embrace primary school education to their full potential, through a partnership with parents. Having worked a combined total of twenty-three years in early-years and primary education roles, Laura and Stephanie found themselves placed together in their last role as early-years teachers and, from there, an ambitious partnership and friendship ensued. Here, Laura and Stephanie explain how they plan to put their dreams into action …

and acquire all the skills necessary for primary school. Individualised, structured sessions focus on foundation skills, such as fine/ gross motor skills, pre-reading and writing skills as well as numeracy all delivered through an ethos of play. We will use early years’ curriculum materials and supportive games to keep children engaged and appeal to different learning styles, as well as incorporating traditional methods. As we strongly believe that parents are our partners in educating their children, the sessions will actively involve parents, so that they can take away many skills and ideas to use at home.”

“Over the past few years, we have seen the changes with the Early Years Curriculum and the demands this places on young children. We felt that children were not being prepared enough for such big changes from pre-school/nursery to fulltime primary education - the concept of “BeBright” classes was born, and it became clear that we could put our experience into a programme that could be delivered to children, before they start school.”

Educational based pre-school sessions for 2-5 year olds run by qualified teachers on a termly basis. At each venue there are 2 x 45 minute sessions, one is literacy based one is numeracy based. You can choose to attend just one or both sessions.

“The main aim of our early-learning sessions is to ensure that children have the very best head-start

Rotary Club Support School Pond Project From left: Scott Reeve, outdoor learning co-ordinator, headteacher Andy Fawkes, and Rotarians Tom Johnson, Sue Titman, Ken Littlemore and Carl Midgley with some of the pupils at Linchfield Community Primary School’s restored pond area been restored and rejuvenated. Mr Reeve said: “We are very grateful to both the Friends of Linchfield School and the Rotary Club for their support. The pond has now been redeveloped as a great learning resource for the pupils.” A disused and forgotten pond area at a village primary school has been transformed into an inspirational outdoor learning area with the support of the Rotary Club of the Deepings. Over a number of years, the pond at the back of the playing field at Linchfield Community Primary School in Deeping St James had been out of use and fenced off for safety reasons. Luckily, the school’s

outdoor learning coordinator, Year Six teacher, Scott Reeve, was not prepared to see such a potentially valuable learning facility go to waste. He approached the Rotary Club for help, and the club willingly contributed £200 towards the project. The Friends of Linchfield School also provided generous funding, and, with the efforts of pupils and local firm “Deep In Gardens”, the pond has

The project was of particular interest to the Rotary Club, who were keen to help with the pond’s restoration having been involved when it was first introduced at the school. Rotary Club President, Ken Littlemore, said: “The Rotary Club is always pleased to support community projects such as this and delighted that the pond will be a valuable learning resource for children at the school for many years to come.”

Locals help shape the future of hospice care Having expanded services over the past year, and with ambitious plans to extend its reach even further in the future, Thorpe Hall Hospice, in Longthorpe, Peterborough, is now introducing a service user group, called Impact, to ensure the views of patients, carers and the community are heard, and feed into plans for the development of services. It is hoped that a channel of twoway communication, between

12

users of the Sue Ryder hospice, and the hospice’s management team will be improved. Hospice director Jane Petit said: “As a national charity, Sue Ryder has a board of trustees, but Impact will be a local group working specifically at Thorpe Hall. We will be looking to the group to provide us with a patient and carer perspective on our services and plans.” As well as attending regular

monthly meetings, members of Impact may also be asked to get involved in the appointment of senior staff, attendance at internal hospice meetings and ongoing training. A fact finding meeting is being held at Thorpe Hall Hospice on October 13th, at 11am, for anyone interested in finding out more about Impact. If you’re interested, please come along with no obligation, or email thorpehall@sueryder.org.

Peterborough branch of Centre for Young Musicians to open in autumn 2016 Centre for Young Musicians (CYM), a division of the Guildhall School, is delighted to announce a new branch in Peterborough, which will open in autumn 2016, as part of an ongoing national expansion of the Guildhall School’s provision for musicians under the age of eighteen. A specialist Saturday music school, Peterborough Centre for Young Musicians will enhance progression routes in music education in the area, by collaborating with Ormiston Bushfield Academy, and receiving support from the Peterborough Music Hub. It will be open to young people throughout the area and will have a bursary scheme to promote access. The weekly sessions, throughout the academic year, begin on October 8th, with a free introductory Open Day on September 24th at Ormiston Bushfield Academy. Kirsten Barr, Peterborough CYM Centre Manager, commented: “The Peterborough Centre for Young Musicians will provide a great opportunity for young musicians to learn from professional music teachers and performers. It’s really important

that they get to meet people who are doing it for real – it gives them those role models they need to keep them going.” Peterborough CYM, open to applicants aged between seven and eighteen years, will offer focused professional training and an opportunity to bring the city’s talented young musicians together, producing the perfect environment for creative excellence. It will provide a foundation for higher education training options and professional music careers in the future. The young musicians will also have the opportunity to train locally in association with one of the world’s leading conservatoires,

with Guildhall School graduates and professors providing expert workshop opportunities and masterclasses throughout the year. Stephen Dagg, Director, CYM National Strategy, commented, “Students attending the Peterborough Centre will enjoy an integrated curriculum of ensembles in a variety of styles and genres, choral training and general musicianship classes on Saturdays during school terms.” CYM is part of the Guildhall School’s Young Artists division, which also includes Junior Guildhall. The Guildhall School of Music & Drama is provided by the City of London Corporation.

Fitness is child’s play at EMPIRE GYM

“We learn more physical skills in the first five years, than at any other time in our lives, and the more children succeed in gaining movement (motor) skills, the more they’ll want to continue with sport and physical activity”. (British Heart Foundation “Early movers”) During their pre-school years, most children enjoy a natural, healthy interest in physical activity, and possess a biological drive to use their physical skills. These activities benefit a child’s growth by enhancing and promoting the development of motor skills, bones and muscles, cognitive and social skills. By school age, however, some children gravitate slowly toward more sedentary pursuits, like watching TV, or playing computer games, and, over time, become reluctant to engage in physical exercise. So, the challenge for the parents of these children, is to cultivate and maintain a mutual, healthy interest in physical activity. At Empire Gym, we offer early opportunities for your child to be introduced to the gym environment, by creating events for children, in the form of group activity parties at weekends, when the gym is closed to regular members. During these

events, children exercise in the gym, in a fun-filled entertaining way, as a group, under the supervision of a fully qualified instructor. Parents can choose to use this time to indulge in their own physical exercise in the various areas of the facility, or to simply relax, have a coffee, and watch the children’s activities from the galleried reception area. Of course, an adult’s positive attitude can help a child who is reluctant to exercise, and by being a physically active parent yourself, you can help to instil a love of physical activity, and therefore, help your child find a place for exercise in their everyday life. We firmly believe that healthy, physically active children are more likely to be academically motivated, alert and successful, and, that physical competence builds self-esteem at every age. If you require further information of the activities available for families and children at Empire Gym, please call us on the numbers below.

The Achilles Heel of Summer Footwear!

Rebecca Brett Remedial sports massage therapist

The Achilles is a large tendon at the back of the ankle that connects the largest calf muscles to the foot. It sustains huge forces produced when walking and running, and helps the calf muscles to absorb shock when the heel strikes the ground. Typically, pain in the Achilles area is caused by the repetitive movement of the foot and ankle during walking and running, and is often influenced by changes in footwear. As the weather improved over the summer and we swapped our boots for flip-flops, many of us possibly didn’t consider the likely impact of the change on our lower leg muscles and tendons. Most flip-flops do not offer sufficient arch support, heel cushioning or flexibility of sole. As a result, the calf muscles and tendons are required to overwork, often leading to altered walking patterns and pain, notably in the back of the ankle or Achilles tendon area. So what happens? During the cooler months, we wear enclosed footwear that supports, sometimes elevates, the heel and absorbs much of the shock of impact as the heel strikes the ground. Hard-soled sandals and thin-soled flip-flops, however, lower

the heel slightly and overstretch the Achilles tendon, requiring it to work harder than usual, thereby increasing the likelihood of injury. Additionally, the toes begin to scrunch repeatedly in an attempt to “grab hold” of the flip-flop when we walk. The repetitive tugging on the Achilles (and other tendons at the back of the ankle) in this unfamiliar lengthened position can cause pain due to wear and tear, often leading to pain further up the calf and into the knee joint. How can Remedial Massage help this? As I have mentioned, the two main calf muscles are attached to the Achilles, so the health of these muscles can directly influence the health of the tendon. A programme of stretching and strengthening the calf muscles through massage, can help to improve the shock absorbency of these muscles and, in turn, aid the

recovery of Achilles pain. Remedial massage can help to assess the injury and treat accordingly, using soft tissue techniques such as stretching the tissue, cold and heat treatments, encouraging circulation to aid healing and provide supportive taping if required. Additionally, specific exercises to help strengthen the tissue to guard against a reoccurrence of injury may be given to help you manage the symptoms. Of course, prevention is always better than cure. If you feel the beginnings of pain at the back of the ankle, limit the hours spent in unsupportive footwear, stretch the back of your legs and ice the area to control inflammation and therefore promote healing. So, if summer footwear has left you with a pain in the calf or ankle, it may be time to give us a call. For further information or advice, please call Rebecca or visit the Wellhead Practice.

New York - The City of Dreams… New York is the fantasy destination of millions of people worldwide who want to live there and make it big, or just spend a week or two experiencing the magic.

It’s said that everyone should visit New York at least once, and it’s easy to see why: the city is teeming with fascinating sights and attractions, from its towering skyscrapers to the humble hot dog carts on the sidewalk. Supposedly, there’s nothing you can’t find in New York. The ‘Big Apple’ is known for setting the world’s standard in food, nightlife and shopping, and is home to some of the most famous attractions on earth. “Must-see highlights” include the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, the Empire State Building, the Brooklyn Bridge and Central Park. New York is also home to world-class museums like the Guggenheim and the Metropolitan Museum of Art; famous performance venues like Madison Square Garden, Carnegie Hall and Radio City Music Hall, and of course the multitude of theatres that light up Broadway each night.

and crowded, and visitors can enjoy the tranquillity of the Adirondacks and the Catskills at resorts like Lake Placid, Lake George and Hudson Valley.

Whatever type of holiday you’re after, New York has something for everyone to enjoy. Best time to visit New York New York is truly a year-round travel destination, but the climate does vary widely from season to season; with hot, humid summers and cold winters. The best time to visit New York is in the autumn (September and October) or spring (April and May), when temperatures are moderate.

• Visit the 9/11 Memorial at Ground Zero. • See the lights of Times Square. • Walk along the promenade at the Coney Island Funfair.

What to do in New York

• Walk across the Brooklyn Bridge. • Go ice skating at Rockefeller Plaza. • Take a carriage ride around Central Park. • Get a great view of the city from the Staten Island Ferry. Whatever your budget, I can offer great value, convenience hotels to five-star luxury. I’ll find the perfect place for you to rest your head after the fun-filled days and nights exploring the “Big Apple”.

opefully, August was a month of plenty and September should also bring forth a good harvest: a reward for all of the hard work in spring and early summer. As autumn approaches, early crops such as French and runner beans, courgettes, tomatoes and sweetcorn will be coming to an end. However, now is the time to lift onions and potatoes before the arrival of cold damp days: they have completely the opposite storage conditions. Onions should be kept in the light and, if you are keen, you can string them and then hang in a cool frost-free place such as a shed - don’t hang them in the kitchen as it is too warm and humid. On the other hand, potatoes should be stored in a dark, dry, frostfree place, such as a garage or shed, to prevent them turning green or rotting: only store undamaged and healthy tubers and use those that show pest attack first. Store them in hessian or paper sacks and check from time-to-time in case any are rotten, as they will have a swift effect on the good tubers. Also, make sure to dry them out well before storing. Even though the winter months are approaching, there are a number of crops which are hardy enough to withstand the winter and will provide a steady supply of fresh leaves through to next spring. September is a good time to start sowing and planting the following crops; winter lettuces (“Valdor”, “Arctic King” or “Winter Density” are good varieties to choose), spring greens (seeds can be sown in modules for planting out in October), broad beans, spinach, lamb’s lettuce, onion sets and garlic. Last year, I planted broad beans in the autumn; they cropped well and, as they were earlier, avoided being attacked by blackfly. Crop covers keep the temperature slightly higher than the ambient temperature and protect the plants from getting battered by harsher weather conditions.

A few jobs that need doing include: • Cut down asparagus to 2.5 cms (1in) above the ground. • Turn the compost heap and water if it is dry. • Earth-up or stake Brussels. • Harvest apples and pears. • Ripen pumpkins and squashes by removing leaves to allow sunlight in.

Free courtesy cars available!

• Clear away old foliage and vegetation – leaving it to rot on the soil may spread diseases.

• Prune blackberries when picking is over – cut out all of the canes that carried this year’s fruit and leave new canes unpruned. Last autumn, I planted green manure (“Phacelia”) in one area as an experiment and then dug it in before it flowered. It seemed to keep the weeds at bay and the area which I planted has produced some very healthy looking crops –I will be planting it again this year when I have a space left, after lifting my potatoes. Happy gardening!

| Consumer Advice Winter’s on the Way! Time to Prepare for the Big Boiler Switch on SEPTEMBER – late summer or early autumn? Whatever your take on it, it’s the perfect month to get your boiler checked and serviced before winter kicks in. The days might be warm, but the nights are already turning a bit chilly. With most people hanging on until October to turn on their boilers after the summer months, it is essential that you use the next few weeks to ensure your boiler gets the professional once-over. Your boiler has been working throughout the year giving you all the hot water you require and, as we are about to enter the autumn and winter months when your boiler will also be providing your home with heat and taking on an additional workload, it’s time to get in touch with the experts. Safe Local Trades is happy to be your first port of call, with recommended gas/oil, boiler and central heating plumbers and engineers all over the PE area. So, for peace of mind and to avoid the misery of a boiler breakdown this winter, what should you do to prepare your central heating for the cold weather? Annual boiler services The weeks leading up to winter are the best times for boiler services and safety checks; months of disuse can create problems in gas appliances, and these problems can lead to central heating system failures when the appliance begins operating in winter. The best way to nip boiler faults in the bud is to arrange a boiler service. If you can do this before the winter strikes, you can identify and resolve any problems swiftly. The last thing you want is to have no central heating or hot water on a freezing winter morning! Insulate your pipes When the temperature drops below zero, standing water in your pipes can freeze, blocking up your plumbing system. As water expands when it turns into ice, frozen pipes are also particularly likely to rupture and break. Pipe insulation is a simple, cost-effective solution to this problem. Check your radiators The approach of winter is also a good time to bleed radiators. This will ensure that your central heating operates efficiently – if there is air trapped in the radiator, then it will not warm up as well as it would if it was full of water, and might not even properly warm up at all. Test it in the autumn British households typically switch their central heating on in October. You may not realise that a fault has developed in your boiler until you turn it on just before winter, and by this point, all the reputable plumbers may be extremely busy. Pensions

- Have you Heard about Auto Enrolment?

If you are employed, or are an employer, you should by now have arranged, or be looking to arrange, your new Qualifying Workplace Pension Scheme. Whether you work full time or part time, your employer will have to enrol you in a workplace pension scheme, if you: • are not already in a suitable workplace pension scheme • are at least 22 years old, but under State Pension age • earn more than £10,000 a year (tax year 2016-17) • work in the UK If you are an employer, to arrange this suitable pension scheme is no longer a choice. Under a law introduced in 2012, all employers must eventually offer a workplace pension scheme and automatically enrol eligible workers in it. This requirement has applied to larger employers since October 2012, and will apply to all employers regardless of staff numbers, by 2018. Employers have been warned not to ignore penalty notices by The Pensions Regulator. Employers who fail

to heed warning notices risk a fine which increases each day. The fine for small employers with one to four staff who fail to comply is £50 per day and for those with five to forty-nine it is £500 per day. Contribution levels: If you are an employer, you have to maintain a minimum contribution level and, as an employee, you are also encouraged to participate. The current contribution levels are as follows: The total minimum contribution is currently set at 2% of your earnings (0.8% from you, 1% from your employer, and 0.2% as tax relief). From April 2018, it will increase as follows: April 2018 to March 2019: 5% of your earnings (2.4% from you, 2% from your employer, and 0.6% as tax relief) From April 2019 onwards: 8% of your earnings (4% from you, 3% from your employer, and 1% as tax relief) If you are an employer or an employee, as always we believe that advice is essential so, should you require advice, please contact our office for a FREE initial consultation.

Delaine Buses – Continuity and Reliability

▲ The latest type of Double Deckers in the fleet are Wrightbus bodied Volvo B9TL/B5TL chassis and are predominantly found on the 101 102 Morton-BourneThe Deepings-Peterborough service. They incorporate the latest start of the art green technology and are fully wheelchair accessible. AD64 DBL is seen in Church Street en route to Peterborough. ▼ The founder of the motorbus business, Thomas Arthur Smith with his three-year-old son, Hugh, on the step of the company’s very first motor bus, the Ford Model T outside the depot on Spalding Road, Bourne with the Delaine scroll evident on the back.

New in 1953, AEC Regent III HCT 150 is seen in the summer of 1963, negotiating the roundabout which was oval-shaped in those days on its way to Stamford. ▼ The first Delaine double decker, DCT 486, new in 1948, is seen in the old Peterborough Bishop’s Road Bus Station (which closed in 1982) in the iconic livery that is still applied to vehicles today.

The smart blue and cream buses are one of the most familiar sights on our local roads and, for well over a hundred years, locals haven’t just “caught the bus” to Peterborough or Stamford, or wherever – they will have “caught The Delaine”. This true epitome of a “family firm”, (one of the very few familyowned independent bus operators left in the U.K.) continues to prosper, providing the life-line for so many people in this predominantly rural area, linking them with surrounding towns and the city of Peterborough, whether for employment, shopping, hospital, rail connections, entertainment, or just to marvel at the “Mighty Posh” (Fond memories flood back of the ’60s, with a return for 2/6, admission to the match for 2/- and a programme for 6d! - Ed.) The Delaine business has its origins in 1890, when William Smith, whilst working for his father, Bennett Smith, in the family’s general contracting business, realised as more and more people began asking for a lift, there was a market for passenger traffic on his horse and cart, which he would use to convey produce to markets in the surrounding area. William died in 1913 and his son, Thomas Arthur, took over the business, aged seventeen. In 1915, he married Miss Emma Jane Weston from Peterborough who, through family connections, brought the “Delaine” name to the business. Thomas Arthur acquired the first motor bus in 1919, a fourteen-seat Ford Model T, bought for £495. Family legend has it that, due to there being a number of blacksmith’s businesses established in the town, Emma Jane decided if they were going to make that kind of investment, the

buses would be called Delaine, and every bus since then has carried the well-known scroll name on the rear. Daily services were established to Spalding, Grantham, Stamford and Peterborough by 1923. In May 1941, the business became incorporated as Delaine Coaches Ltd, (and later to Delaine Buses Ltd in 1995), and bus services continued throughout the Second World War, with the addition of workers’ transport to airfields and munition factories in the area. Theirs was one of only four fuel pumps in the town. Post-war Britain saw increasing levels of commuting of people to their workplace, and, in response, the first Delaine double-decker bus entered service in 1948. Coach trips, especially to the seaside, were also becoming popular, although increased private car ownership from the 1960s onwards was to signal the decline of the coach-hire operation, which finally ceased in 1996. After the war, workers’ contract buses to factories in Stamford and Essendine continued, but they declined as factories

closed, and the last such operation ended in December 1988. Until 1976, the main route between Bourne and Peterborough had operated hourly at peak-time, then off-peak every two hours except on Wednesdays (Market Day in Peterborough) and Saturdays, but with the development of the city, the hourly frequency was extended to six days a week. The enormous growth of Peterborough, to include the Queensgate Centre from 1982, has had the knock-on effect of “dormitory villages” expanding along the A15. The traditional hourly service became half-hourly from The Deepings in 1985 with the introduction of The Deepings Flyer into Peterborough, which made use of the new Parkways and was to become the template for which all Delaine services in the city would follow, in order to compete with the private car. In 1990, the peak-time frequency from Bourne increased to every fifteen minutes to cater for the growing commuter market and, in 1996, the off-peak thirty minute frequency was extended to Bourne,

with an hourly extension to Morton. The latest significant development was in 2011, when the service was enhanced to three times an hour between The Deepings and Peterborough. From January 2016, the BourneStamford service, which had previously operated hourly during the morning peak then every two hours off-peak, merged with the hourly Stamford-Peterborough service and there is now a throughbus every hour on the Bourne - Stamford - Peterborough route, which also improves connections within and across the town of Stamford. A daily service also operates bi-hourly between The Deepings and Stamford with peaktime extensions from/to Bourne. With the growth of parental choice of secondary schools since 1994, a substantial number of extra and duplicate journeys were introduced on the regular routes around Bourne, The Deepings and

His legacy has been enormous, “ with the company ethos, “Continuity and Reliability” drummed into his sons from day one. Stamford, to cater for schools and college traffic, and Delaine services now serve no fewer than eleven schools and colleges in the area. With two outstanding schools, Bourne has become an envied centre of educational excellence, and no less than fourteen buses are deployed on journeys serving Bourne Grammar School and it is with military precision that they arrive to take their correct position, in or around the school grounds each afternoon. Over the years, the business has developed substantially, passing down through several generations of the Delaine-Smith family. After

the death of Thomas Arthur in 1958, the business passed to his son Hugh Delaine-Smith and daughter Beryl. Today the business is owned and managed by Hugh’s sons Ian, Kevin, Anthony and Mark. The sixth generation of the family came into the business in 2010 when Jennifer Delaine-Smith (great-granddaughter of Thomas Arthur) joined the firm, and is now company secretary. Her younger sister Victoria is now also on board. Of the thirty-four staff employed, all but four have a PSV driving licence. Today, the fleet comprises twenty-seven buses, all are of Volvo manufacture, with British-built bodies, and twenty-one are doubledeckers. Fleet replacement is an ongoing programme, and the last non-wheelchair accessible vehicle will be withdrawn from service at the end of the year and be replaced by the latest “state of the art” double decker. Hugh Delaine-Smith joined the business after leaving school in 1938 and, with the exception of serving in the RAF during the war, worked in the business until his death in 1995, and was awarded the MBE for services to public transport in the New Year Honours List that year. His legacy has been enormous, with the company ethos, “Continuity and Reliability” drummed into his sons from day one. His firm he saw as “an island

▲ St Guthlac’s Church makes a splendid backdrop as Leyland Atlantean, EKR 152L travels south along Church Street on its way to Peterborough. The 1970s saw the traditional rear entrance double deckers give way to the modern front entrance vehicles (with the engine at the rear), which did not require a conductor. ▲

New in 1959, OCT 566 was the first of only two double deck bodies built by Yeates of Loughborough, both especially for Delaine. Having just passed the roundabout, it is seen approaching the bus stop outside the old cinema. Today, the footpath is built out at this point.

of tranquillity in an ever-changing sea”, and the traditional blue livery of all his vehicles, retained from the early days, helps reinforce this strong corporate identity. “Some may now view it as old-fashioned,” opines Managing Director Anthony, “but it has stood the test of time. It’s the brand and is instantly recognised, not just locally, but by bus enthusiasts throughout the world.”

▲ The roundabout in Market Deeping is where the 101 and 102 services converge. Volvo B9TL AD59 DBL, working a 102, has just turned into the Market Place and will operate the Deeping St James loop, via Horsegate and the Health Centre, before returning to Peterborough.

With such a wealth of fascinating history to tap into, Anthony enthuses on the “Delaine Heritage Trust”, established last year, and their plans for the future. Planning permission has recently been granted for an extension to part of the company’s Spalding Road premises. A collection will be housed in an on-site museum, and the three Leyland double deckers of 1956, 1960 and 1973 vintage which currently comprise “The Heritage Fleet”, will take pride of place. Delaine archive memorabilia, documents, ledgers and a plethora of fabulous photographs will also be displayed, to provide an intriguing accompaniment to the last one hundred and twenty-six years of life in Bourne and the surrounding area.

Rafters Enjoy a Day at the Movies On one of the sunniest days of the year so far, The Deepings Annual Raft Race organizers, competitors and spectators enjoyed yet another gloriously successful event. Deeping was certainly the place to be on Sunday August 7th, as our beautiful town was flooded with its residents, as well as visitors, from all around the local area, near and far, all hoping to grab a prime riverside spot for a good view of the racing. The huge crowds along the banks of the River Welland were not to be disappointed, as the inventive, and enthusiastic, rafters paddled by. This year’s theme was “A Day at the Movies”, which provided extra entertainment for those watching, as they tried to guess which film had inspired each raft. The effort by rafters has got to be applauded, as, once again, the time and imagination put into each raft did not go unappreciated by the onlookers. There were pirates, sheep, minions, Thunderbirds, cheerleaders, masked swords fighters and even a storm trooper or two, all vying to win the coveted “Best Dressed Raft” award. There was something for everyone, from the Youth Race, the Main Race, to the Fun Race. Thankfully, if the rafters got too hot during their mad dash for the finish line, the crowd did not disappoint, and joined in, as usual, with water pistols and buckets, to make sure the participants were well and truly soaked. After all, who wants to end a raft race dry? There was fun to be had away from the riverbank, as well, with plenty to occupy kids, both young and old! The town centre was buzzing, as the smell of fish and chips filled the air, visitors paraded balloons, tried their luck on fairground games and perused produce from local businesses. They could even enjoy a cold beverage aboard an open-top double decker bus! A huge thank you, and congratulations, to the small, voluntary committee, who organise this annual highlight of the local calendar and, of course, to everyone who took part and raised funds for The Deepings Community Centre, our invaluable local resource, and MECP2 Duplication UK, a national charity which gives support, and raises awareness, for a rare genetic condition. It really was such an incredibly fun-filled day – same again, next year please!

Making a Will

– Your Questions Answered Making a will is the only way you can decide what happens to your property and possessions after your death. If you do have a will, make sure you review it from time to time, as your personal circumstances may have changed significantly since you made it. If you die without a will, your estate will be distributed according to the law, rather than according to your wishes.

Making a will is not as difficult as people sometimes think - in most instances it is a fairly straightforward and inexpensive procedure.

your will. If you die without making a will, then the rules of intestacy apply. Unfortunately, they make no provision for step-children.

Here are a few commonly asked questions, where the answers may not be as you might expect:

I have young children. If me and my husband die, will my parents be able to bring them up?

I have lived with my partner for five years - will they inherit on my death?

Not necessarily, unless you have appointed a guardian in your will, whether it be a relative or a friend. No-one will be legally entitled to take care of the children, and an application would have to be made to court.

Not unless you have made a will, naming them as a beneficiary. If you die without making a will, then the rules of intestacy apply. Unfortunately, they do not provide for co-habitees, only for those who are married or who have entered into a civil partnership. Your partner may be able to make a claim against your estate in certain circumstances. I have step-children and I have raised them as my own children since they were young - will they inherit when I die? They will not benefit, unless you provide for them in

If I do not make a will, does that mean that my spouse or civil partner will get everything? No, this will not necessarily happen. If you die without making a will, then the rules of intestacy have to be followed and this could mean that your spouse or civil partner does not inherit everything. Dealing with an estate during bereavement is always a difficult task, so having a will in place, outlining your wishes, can greatly assist your loved ones.

Will You finally get around to… Making Your Will? The chances are that you are one of the 35 million people in this country who know that they need to make a will and fully intend to get around to it. Even if you are not, then you probably made your will years ago, and know that it now needs updating. Making or updating your will is remarkably easy, and doesn’t cost the earth. Ensuring that everything runs smoothly when you die, and that your family and loved ones get the maximum inheritance, isn’t at the top of everyone’s list, but if you fall into one of these groups, it should be: • Unmarried with children, • Unmarried and co-habiting, • In a second or third marriage/ relationship, • Over 60 and concerned about future care needs, • Diagnosed with any degenerative condition. Remember, if you don’t have a will, you don’t have a say in how your assets are distributed or who looks after your children if you die, whilst they are young. Many of our clients remark on how easy we make the process of making or updating a will, and all are pleased and so relieved that they have finally done it.

So, get around to it today and call us for a free initial consultation on (01778) 382723

Get Fit, Get Walking... with a dog

There is no doubt that one of the most important things that you can do to improve your health is to go on a brisk walk for a couple of miles, on five or more days a week. This improves heart health, reduces blood pressure and blood sugar levels. It reduces cancer risk (and actually improves your ability to fight cancer if you have it); it increases your general fitness and improves your mental health. The biggest obstacle to achieving this, though, is maintaining your motivation when life gets busy, when you feel tired, when the weather is poor or when you just don’t feel like it. It’s time to bring out the secret weapon - a dog! My dogs always get excited when they see me preparing for a walk. They never get bored with walking, they don’t worry about the weather and they are never too busy. This enthusiasm is infectious, as we understand how important it is to walk our dogs. We will be driven to make sure we keep our dogs healthy, and we might even forget what is healthy for us. Dogs get much more out of a walk than we do. As well as attentively seeing and hearing everything around them, they

can “see” with their noses. They know what other animals have been past, they can seek out anything vaguely edible and they know what the neighbours have had for breakfast! Walking with your dog adds interest. They help us see things that we might otherwise miss. They do things that make us laugh (although sometimes rolling in fox poo can be less than amusing!) They make it easier for us to interact with strangers, as there is nothing easier than exchanging dog stories. On longer walks, they keep us going. Don’t forget that what is good for the goose is good for the gander. We know our dogs need a walk every day for their health … and so do we. Well, I am off now to Rutland Water - my dogs are about to take me for a walk!

| A little bit of History

by Rex Needle

Discovering . . . the annual aquatic sports

The sporting tradition along our rivers began centuries ago and has embraced fishing, wildfowling, boating, skating and swimming, although the latter is no longer popular due to the hazards created by fast flowing water and the danger of infection. In past times, there were no such considerations and during the summer months our waterways became a magnet for bathers with the River Welland through Deeping St James being the perfect place for a dip in hot weather. Such popularity spawned organised events and among them a century ago was the annual aquatic sports held on that stretch of water downstream from the High Locks to the Deeping Gate bridge which attracted swimmers from the villages and from Stamford and Peterborough, all anxious to win some of the prizes on offer including several from the Dowager Marchioness of Exeter who was then living at Deeping Manor. One of the biggest of these events took place in August 1912 and although the ladies did not compete, male swimmers of all ages, men and boys, some in the early teens, were able to demonstrate their prowess at diving and swimming although there were also a number of novelty crowd pullers such as tub and canoe races and walking the

greasy pole which had been erected over the river where contestants had to reach the end and then return to the bank although, inevitably, the majority slipped off and got a ducking. The 1912 event also included a tug-of-war for the first time with competing teams on either bank and the winners pulling the losers into the water, much to the delight of the crowd. Throughout the event, spectators were entertained by popular music of the day played by the Market Deeping Brass Band although an unscheduled occurrence also caused some amusement when a boat carrying three members of the organising committee was overturned by one of the competitors and they were pitched into the water, an incident which brought gales of laughter from the onlookers. It was all meant to be good fun although a local newspaper reported later: “No doubt precautions will be taken against such tricks in the future. Safety considerations today mean that organised swimming is no longer held along the river but community leisure activities continue with an annual raft race which has more recent origins and has now become a popular event attracting an assortment of homemade craft raising funds for the benefit of local charities. | Motoring - monthly advice from Tom Ingram

Happy Holiday Driving … but Watch Out for Pokemon Hunters! Welcome to the motoring section. I hope the summer holidays are bringing you much family fun and relaxation. Part of my holiday was spent in a sunny Cornwall, travelling around some stunning beaches in some pretty challenging driving conditions which included several single track roads. One aspect of road safety that has taken the country by surprise is the recent fad of “Pokemon Go”, where people are taking to the streets by foot, bike and car, to catch Pokemon on their smartphones. It’s certainly addictive, fun and with the bonus of getting people out and about, discovering the “Pokestops” in our towns. What could possibly be bad about all of this? There have been identified fundamental

child safety concerns by the NSPCC, and the RAC has also warned players of the road safety hazards of navigating around streets, while intently staring at the smartphone, rather than watching out for traffic! We do, of course, have our very specific areas that attract our youngsters in the summer holidays, but I think what Pokemon creates, as an additional hazard, is the prospect of youngsters travelling around in places that you would not ordinarily expect to see them. It’s a little bit like I have experienced this summer in Cornwall - you just can’t assume that the road ahead is going to remain clear and hazard-free at all times.

| Police Patrol by Bourne’s Sergeant 503 Rick Mosley

Sergeant Mosley’s Musings:

Hate crime is a violation of personal and civil rights and can have a major impact on a victim’s quality of life. It also has a negative impact on the relationships in local communities. As a result, we take reports of hate crime very seriously. Hate crimes are thankfully few and far between in our area; however they do occur. Nationally, there has been an increase in such crimes since the Brexit result was announced. A “hate crime” is a crime that the victim, or any other person, perceives to be motivated by hostility or prejudice towards any aspect of a person’s identity based on, but not limited to, one of the following: • Religion • Gender • Disability (including mental health) • Ethnicity • Sexuality A “hate incident” is any incident which may or may not be a crime that the victim or any other person perceives to be motivated by hostility or prejudice towards any aspect of a person’s identity. The perceived hostility or prejudice may be wrong or misplaced, for example the offender may think that you are gay when in fact that is not the case. Despite this, it is still classed as a hate crime or incident. It is also illegal to say anything or produce any written material that tries to persuade someone to commit

a criminal offence against another race or group of people. This means that leaflets, flyers or speeches that promote crime against people because of their identity are against the law. However, it is not against the law to disagree with, or criticise, someone because of their beliefs, which comes under the Human Rights Act, Article 10, Freedom of Expression. These crimes and incidents are treated very seriously by Lincolnshire Police and any subsequent investigation is closely monitored to ensure that all possible lines of enquiry are exhausted and any identified offender is arrested and dealt with positively. Anyone who is convicted at court for a hate crime can expect a tough sentence, as any crime with a hate element is an ‘aggravated’ crime, meaning it is considered more serious. The court has a duty to take this into account when it passes sentence, and to make it clear that it has done so.

For further information, have a look at http://www.stophateuk.org/ and https:// www.victimsupport.org.uk/crime-info/ types-crime/hate-crime for help and support, if you are the victim of a hate crime.
